fsume93 01-09-07, 02:31 PM Funny, around here I feel like I'm a bottom dwelling cheap-o, but my wife and friends can't believe that I needed to spend $1500 on speakers. Is no one else as sane as me?
Axiom Epic Grand Master setup.

I have a similar setup but with the VP150 and QS4's. Your mistake was in letting your wife know how much you spent. My wife knows i spent 2k on a hdtv but assumes speakers are just a couple of hundred dollars. Lucky me. Oh but I hear it about the cost of the TV.

tbonetommygun 04-02-07, 06:58 PM well this is embarrassing...
I own: Logitech z-5500 surround system with Bose 2.2(don't know if that's actually the model, they just say 2.2 on the back) right and lefts. Dad gave the bose to me, they sound much better than the stock speakers. just need a center now...
It's not bad for a starting system. But after visiting BB a few times my sub now sounds extremely muddy and underpowered, and my center and rear speakers sound harsh, muddy in the midrange, and badly crossed over. the bose aren't too bad but could use some better midrange and bass, they have pretty good highs.
Velodyne CHT front row speakers(5 peice)
Sub: Bic H-100

MinkyMomo 04-14-07, 03:02 PM I have a pair of Canton Ergo 70's in 2-channel mode, and three Canton CD 360 F's still sitting in their boxes. Someday, I might get the time to wall-mount them under my plasma...

Nothing to be ashamed of thats quite a good starter system, and probably has plenty of oomph to boot. Best of all it offers good bang for buck(with the exeption of the bose but that was free). Think of how far sound on pc's has come in the last 10 years. It wasn't to long ago people were perfectly happy with those battery powered white plastic boxes that sounded worse than most laptop speakers from today.

Of course, I've only had this setup for oh, 3 months, but I'm already looking to move two of the CHTs to back surrounds and beginning the search for new mains...and then probably a matching center eventually. *Sigh*

A Zenith Professional Home VCR which a I got from the Salvation army for 3 dollars
A durabrand suboofer and satalites
A Emerson AS260 stereo with soundesign speakers which I am retiring for a while (it needs a rest) When i move it i can hear a loose metal preice rolling around inside. (tapedeck pinch rollers are also damaged by roaches. ) single disc cd player is fussy. ( I like old stereo's so i'm keeping it as a bedside system.
tomorrow I'm getting a BNIB 10 watt durabrand stereo with 6 cd changer (not using the bookshelf speakers that come with it . that's why I'm buying such a cheap stereo.
a GPX DVD player which kicks every APEX DVD player ever made to the curb.
anothother zenith VCR (lowly basic VCR)
A DELL PC.
A Cyber acoustics sub (I broke the satalite speakers)
4 Lenoxx sound Portable CD players one was free!
A muffled sounding Newer sony discman (i like lenoxx sound players better because they dont sound so muffled and restricted)
A vintage TEAC Raidio cassette walkman , A white westinghouse walkman a A Panasonic brain shaker walkman
Two JVC tapedecks one is a double tape deck
a Technics graphic EQ and a Realistic Graphic EQ with stereo expander.
An RCA Wireless Microphone receiver
A GPX KARAOKE machine with damaged tapedeck (eats tapes)
A pair of 2 way RCA bookshelf speakers
A pair of 3 foot tall single-speaker soundesign speakers which sound great on led zepplin and thumping techno.
Do I have a good set up? I like my stuff!!
about 300 DVD's and climbing!
tommyboy1587 05-29-07, 01:46 PM I thought it would be nice to see how wide of a variety of speakers we have here on AVS :D. Might also help others who are shopping for speakers to see that somebody here has the same ones and maybe they can PM them to ask questions. Let's see them all, Vandy's, Def Tech, monitor audio, paradigm, the "R" word ;), B&W or whatever it is you call your own.
Onix Reference 2 Towers
Onix Reference 100 center
Onix Reference 1 for surounds.
I own all Yamaha speakers. NS 325F, 325C, and 325M (5.1 setup) I used to own a Klipsch synergy setup before this one.
QueueCumber 05-29-07, 02:14 PM I sold the B&W 802Ds and bought the Wilson Watt Puppy 8 speakers. Below is my original post from 5/28/06.
Weird huh? Today is 5/29/07, exactly a year later!!!
B&W 802Ds
I don't have a surround setup currently, but am considering either buying 3 more 802Ds, 2 802Ds and the HTM1D, or selling the 802Ds and buying Wilson Watt Puppy 8s (and small Wilsons for surround gear) if I am completely blown away by them when I can get a chance to demo them in a few months. If I get the 802Ds I would probably get the ASW 855 or ASW 875 for a sub.
I thought this was an interesting coincidence (in my quote above)... So I thought I would share it, as well as update my current speakers with those who are staying on top of this thread.

I don't know if this counts but this is what I listen to:
At Home:
Left: Girlfriend - "Are you going to help me with anything around this house?"
Center: Girlfriend - "Turn off the TV and pay attention to me!"
Right: Girlfriend - "Why do I have to always fix dinner?"
Surround: Girlfriend - General Nagging
At Work:
Left: Boss - "Yeeah I need those TPS reports on my desk by 3. Make sure you use the new coversheet."
Center: Boss - "We need you to come in on Saturday and Sunday"
Right: Boss - "Going home at 5? Must be a half day."
Surrounds: Coworkers - Gossiping how I'm on the internet at AVS all day.
I find the sound on both systems to be generally annoying from time to time with clarity varying depending on how tired/hungover I am. I feel this all detracts from my Axiom setup. :)
My advise:
UP GRADE the Home Speakers, better to a solid nice sounding STEREO configuration.
DOWN GRADE the work Speakers, so it sounds not that terribly clear, the more the noises the better !

broadwayron 09-05-07, 09:07 AM I ditched the surround sound game a while ago, which may be blasphemous around here (actually, my HK + Polk LSi system wasn't bad, for digital).
Now, I have Tyler Acoustics Taylo Reference Monitors (and a 10" Tyler Sub... actually, 2 of the subs, but I just moved to a 400 sq ft apt, and only need one now).
I think shopping for speakers was one of the most time-consuming research/trial & error events of my life... what a hassle. Luckily, I'm happy with the Tylers.

altpensacola 12-27-07, 12:30 PM Sweet! Which is best? The RF-7 or the vintage (cone!) JBL?
that is a tough question actually, I get a HUGE clear sound from the RF7's
but even after over 28 years (!) the JBL's sound smooth and loud.
You really can't compare the two, even though they both make the sound of a grand piano --- sound like a grand piano.....
the RF7's just make it sound like a concert hall grand.
with the JBL's it sounds like the insturment is closer to the speakers if you know what I mean.

I think the Polks are around 1980s or early 90s, rest are at least 7 years old.

FallOutBoy 07-03-08, 07:57 PM pretty old school setup I've peaced together thru deals i've found over the years
Fronts:
Optimus LX10 (OLD stock from a Radioshack I used to work in, found them doing inventory one night when I was in college, wasn't even on the books for the store, manager let me have them)
Center and Rears PRO-CS550 (kinda weird using Centers as rears but tbh they work great and I got all 3 for 60 bucks. NIB on closeout so I was like what the hell)
last 2 I added today after a nice score from BB to finally finish swapping out all the parts from my orginal RCA HTIB I got from when I worked at the Ratshack in college
Sub: JBL SUB160 (from a 6.1 speaker set BB clearenced out for 59.99, only really needed the sub so I gave the speakers to my bro and kept the sub)
Receiver: HTR-5560 (scored from the same closeout at BB for 69.99)
all in all have a bit under 200 bucks invested in my setup, if I added up the MSRP of all this **** it gets kinda silly.... and tbh its less than I payed for the orginal HTIB

Charles944 05-25-09, 03:53 AM I have been blessed with finding some good deals on second-hand Mirage speakers that are still performing beautifully this day and are in great shape:
Mirage 1090i for Mains
Mirage MCC for center
Mirage 595i for surrounds
Pioneer Elite TZ-MCO9 for rear center
Mirage Omni S8 subwoofer
I really the enjoy the large soundstage and disappearing qualities of the Mirage bipolar design and the very handsome design features.
Powering all of them is a Yamaha RX-V1500 7.1 THX receiver. It is a tad older but is no slouch with 120w x 7.
I am currently looking for a MC-3, MC-si, or OM-C3 center to supply a better timbre match for the 1090i's. I finally found a MC-si center but the seller will not ship.
