View Full Version : What speakers do YOU own?
blkwrxwgn 06-24-03, 11:06 AM I thought it would be nice to see how wide of a variety of speakers we have here on AVS :D. Might also help others who are shopping for speakers to see that somebody here has the same ones and maybe they can PM them to ask questions. Let's see them all, Vandy's, Def Tech, monitor audio, paradigm, the "R" word ;), B&W or whatever it is you call your own.

6.1 setup consisting of:

1 Dahlquist QX60-C center
1 SVS 25-31Pci tuned to 22Hz
JamesCB 06-24-03, 03:55 PM Mr.Poindexter is the only one so far with a Phase Technology set up.
I have Phase Tech:
Front: PC 9.1's & PC 3.1
Rear: DST surrounds
Don't need a sub yet. Those SVS's seem pretty tempting though.
Mr.Poindexter 06-24-03, 04:07 PM JamesCB,
The HSU sounds pretty good with the Phase Technology system. What do you mean, don't need a sub yet? You either need it or you don't. While I have not played around with the PC series, the Teatros need a sub. My old Infinities do not. Unless you are moving to a larger room where you need more bass output, if you need one in the future, you need it now. Perhaps you are meaning to say that you are not looking to buy a sub yet, but will be.
While I don't have pictures of my new theater up in my gallery, I do have my old system in the living room in my gallery.
If Glade is the devil, who does that make me?

I agree w/Sushi (not to prolong this OT issue). I find the above one of my favorite quotes over the past couple weeks! Takes our HT aspirations to a Higher Plane. I know I'm doing MY part to advance the Human Race with Dual Ultras and 1KW into them. Still makes me chuckle. :) Love it!

Yes I know....should say "or". Plan to listen to some Paradigms and a few others, then order a set of Axioms or Rockets and return the ones I don't like. I like a clear open sound...so I lean toward the Axioms but have been told my reciever is a bit bright. I have a $1000 max budget for the 5 speaks.
TV : 20" Sony * Trinitron KV-20S10 * (This has been with me since college, naturally I aspire to one day own a very large DLP or plasma 16:9 HD set with built in HD tuner.)
VCR : Sony * SLV 740 HF (Another one thats been with me since college, no plans for an upgrade.)
DVD PLAYER : Sony * DVP-S330 * (I purchased this unit shortly after I was done with school, a true workhorse. I will upgrade if I ever get my dream set in the future, considering that I won't be able to afford said set anytime soon; chances are high that my next unit will be an HD player/recorder.)
RECEIVER : Onkyo * TX-DS777 * (Another one I purchased after I was done with school, if I'm not mistaken this was the very first THX certified reciever on the market. Onkyo's flagship at the time, and rightfully so, this is a wonderful piece of machinery, and built like a tank. I have no plans to upgrade anytime soon, it does all I need and want, my system is in a room 18x18 and thus even if the receiver were capable of EX or ES decoding I would not want to add an additional one or two surround speakers in this size room. 5.1 is quite satisfactory at the moment and I'll some how try to find a way to sleep at night without Dolby Prologic II. If I had the money I would upgrade to Onkyo's TX-DS989, not only would it provide me with power and additional surround channels if I needed it in a larger room one day, but it also has the ability to have it's processor upgraded to whatever the latest and greatest audio decoding software may be, via it's RS232 port. No wonder they call it a "time machine".

Charles Scott 07-08-03, 12:31 AM Just replaced my old speaker system which consisted of the following:
Fronts - Paradigm Monitor 11v2's
Center - Paradigm cc-370
Sub - Energy Exl - 10
Rears - Energy RVSS
My new system is as follows:
Fronts - Meadowlark Audio Kestrel Hotrods
Center - Meadowlark Audio Petrel (Hotrodded)
Sub - RBH TS-10AP
Rears - Kept the Energy RVSS
My old system was fairly good and I was very happy with it. The problem was when I listened to 2 channel audio. The Paradigm 11v2's just didn't do anything for me with music and the Energy sub was loose sounding. My new system sounds awesome with HT and is so much better for 2 channel audio. The Meadowlarks are so much more accurate, smooth and open compared to the Paradigms that it's unfair to even compare them. The RBH sub us very fast so it tightened up the loose boomy sound of the Energy. I opted to keep the Energy RVSS rears because they sound so good I was afraid to get rid of them. The Meadowlark Petrel center is awsome too compared to the Paradigm. I feel this system is definately a few steps up from what I replaced.

And what would you say a whole lot less is? There's only one Wilson dealer here in Atlanta and since they specialize in VERY high-end theaters, my experience with them a few years ago when looking at the 6s was that they don't discount much. Of course, times change and it never hurts to ask but it's also helpful to know what the going rate is in other areas.

What is ridiculous about that set-up? Perhaps you and I define ridiculous differently, but I would say any of the following would be ridiculous:
Mains with dual 15" woofers and a sub with a single 8" woofer.
BOSE speakers on a Mark Levinson front end.
Full range surrounds and satellite mains.
7.1 speaker set-up being driven in 7-way mono by a VCR. (I saw this once!)
Home Theater PC being used with S-Video output to display device.
Small sats and a big sub isn't ridiculous - it is just a slightly to moderately unbalanced system.

Ditto, Ditto, Ditto
Atrax, I agree 100% with shokunin. I you're happy with the sound of your setup, don't let any of us audiophile purist try to make it less pleasant for you. If anyone says "Wait - did you hear that..." interrupt them nicely at that point, offer them a drink, or show them to the door.
Their opinions are no more valuable than yours. And if you listen to them (unless you're specifically requesting help when looking for a new system) then you're making a big mistake.
Their perfect sound is not yours. It never will be. Ignore them.

maxcooper 08-10-03, 06:43 AM * B&W DM603 (series 1) mains
* B&W CC6 (series 1) center
* B&W DM302 (series 1, don't know if there are more series of these) surrounds
* No sub. I live in an apartment and often watch movies at night (dynamic range compression is my, no wait -- my neighbors, friend). I'd like to get a HSU VTF-2 or something as my first sub experience (well, the first one I have owned), but I haven't pulled the trigger yet.
I bought these speakers 4 years ago after listening to a bunch of offerings in the same price range. They are far from perfect, but I liked these the best of the ones I heard at the time (Energy, Polk, Klipsch, Infinity, Paradigm, PSB, some others).
I once heard a woman singing in another room at a friend's house when I was 16 and was surprised to find out that it was actually a recording. It was a CD playing on a Meridian transport+DAC with a Luxman amp (I think, may have been Sumo) and Infinity Kappa 9 speakers. I don't remember what the recording was -- it wasn't anything I was familiar with. Granted it was from another room, but I was totally surprised when I walked in and there wasn't a woman standing there singing. The system was good enough to fool me completely from another room and it still sounded wonderful once I knew what was really going on. I haven't had the resources to build a really nice system myself, but the memory of this experience keeps it on my mind. A thread with these kinds of experiences (what got you into this stuff?) would be an interesting one to read. That was a pivotal experience for me.
* Sony STR-DA333ES receiver (sounds much better than my old, cheap Kenwood 120W integrated amp with the 603s, and (un?)fortunately has enough digital inputs to keep me from needing to upgrade yet)
* Sony DVP-C600D 5-disc DVD (now used for audio only)
* Samsung HLN-437W DLP rear projection HDTV (new and loving it)
* V Inc. Bravo D1 DVD player (connected to TV via DVI - wonderful picture!)
* Scientific Atlanta 3100HD cable box with HD component out (from Time Warner cable)
* Old Sharp VC-H958 VCR that still looks and works like new, surprisingly
* Home Theater Master MX500 universal remote (new and works great)
I got the HT bug a little bit recently and got the TV, Bravo DVD, and universal remote after reading people's impressions on this and other forums. I'd like to get a sub, some other new speakers, and replace my receiver with an amp & pre/pro but I think I'll hold off until I have a better place (house) to put it all.

In music system: The original Quad ESLs circa 1957 powered by Craftsmen tube (6L6) monoblocks circa 1952. But my musical tastes are very modern and we were listening to experimental guitarist Derek Bailey last night. What can I say? The midrange by which all others are to be measured.

In HT system: Magnaplanar MG 1s, unfused and modified, circa 1977, in stereo. I know I'm missing surround info, but the ambient detail from the Maggies is so good, it's like being immersed. All custom here. All prototype, unique, one of a kind. etc. new designs, construction techniques, new acoustical-mechanical design techniques, new approaches, etc. All new, all different... Skanning, Scan-speak, Morel, Dynaudio, and etc, drivers. Stereo only, no surround. Can't be bothered. We just re-designed the very idea of driver mounting to a much higher level of mechanical integrety, and all our drivers have to be re-designed. Very expensive. ouch. But it works, which is more than I can say for standard driver mounting systems.
