trabbic 09-06-07, 08:01 AM What is "switched digital video" ? Why don't they poll their demographic and get rid of the unwatched channels? I know it's not that easy.. but it sounds that the increased bandwidth is going to be a problem already.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switched_digital_video
Your right, it's not as simple as polling and removing channels, they already know what people watch, but you can't just cancel a channel even if only 10% of your subscribers watch it. But with SDV you can still offer that channel, but only when it is requested, the rest of the time you have lots of room for other stuff, like VOD or Cable Modems.
Most channels will be on most of the time, according to the article, only channels that are rarely used will be switched, say History International. If I wanted to watch a show on that channel then when I select it, my box would send a signal to the head end and the head end would make that channel available to my whole node. This works well, because most homes watch the same channels at the same time. For example, prime time shows on network TV, or MTV around 3pm.
It's expensive for the cable company to implement this, but it allows for future things that are discussed in the rest of the article, like 100MBps Cable modems, HD VOD, and hundreds of HD channels.
Bandwidth should not be a concern. When Buckeye upgraded their system, I saw them bring Fiber to a node about 50 feet from my parent's house, and there is a small fiber run right up to my apartment (for 6 units). They are just preparing for the future.
RU FASTR 09-06-07, 09:23 AM Good to hear that bandwidth for HD should not be such an issue for Buckeye. Hopefully SDV will allow plenty of room for MORE HD channels. We just replaced our Hi-def CRT RPTV over the weekend with a new Sony 60" XBR2 and I've turned into a real couch potato. I'm really turning into an HD snob, I'll watch things I don't even care about just because it's in HD.
As a side note, I found that my old set looked better running out of the Moto 3416 using component. I haven't tried HDMI with the new set yet, waiting on a cable from BJC. I've been wondering if other Buckeye subscribers have found differences between component and HDMI using the 3416.
jdcsi99 09-06-07, 08:26 PM I've heard that digital switching will not work will TV's without set top boxes. If thats true they basically cannot "switch" the lower 125 channels a normal tv pulls in, can they? Would this then only be restricted to the higher level channels? thanks.

That is correct.
Those channels with be digital soon anyway, but I imagine that most of the boxes used to help analog TV's tune those will not be capable of switching. Remember also that really there are only about 70 channels on those lower 125. Even though those channels will have to be sent all the time, that is not a concern to Buckeye, because most of those channels are watched more often then the ones they want to switch.
The other 200+ channels that come over all the time but can only be used with a set top box are still eligible for switching, all of the premium channels (several of which are HD), will be GREAT candidates for switching and all the channels between 100 and 300 will also be perfect for switching. Those channels are only used by a small portion of the subscriber base, and even then only at small times. Not like a network channel or CNN that people watch all day...
jubjub75 09-07-07, 10:41 AM Is there anywhere that I can print a list of OTA channels that are (or should be) available? My in-laws live in Swanton, and we hooked up an OTA to their new HD TV last night. It picked up 60 channels (combination of analog and digital), but I wanted to print off a list of what's what, as the whole concept of digital subchannels threw my father in law for a loop.
Thanks!
Charlie Kocis 09-08-07, 03:14 AM Got two questions about Buckeye:
1] Are the broadcast basic & extended basic channels simulcasted in analog and digital? I've yet to check out what they look like in analog, but through the HD-DVR they are the best looking SD channels I've ever seen.
2] Is it common to be charged a $2.00 "franchise fee" when ordering PPV? I just got my most recent bill and I was charged an extra 2 bucks for the already $40 SummerSlam PPV a few weeks back. I never had that with 5+ years of ordering WWE PPVs with Time Warner in Genoa.
rocketknight73 09-11-07, 03:47 PM I seem to be not getting a HD feed for NFL Network. Is anyone else having this issue. Actually it hasn't been going on for at least two days. I still have the SD channel at ch.193 and all it's programming but NFL NET HD doesn't have any programming.(Channel still shows up on guide as well as it's scheduled programming but it's not being displayed for me; black screen only.
BTW ... I just picked up what looks to be a brand new, never been used Motorola DCH3416 HD DVR from Buckeye. Does anybody have any info on these? Pretty nice unit.

TimmyToo 09-13-07, 04:19 PM Is there any reason Buckeye doesn't offer the analog channels (2-79) as qam for someone with a TV that does qam but has no cable card slot?
My Vizio can get the HD locals over cable using qam and I'd like to see the basic tier work the same way.
I've been watching more BCSN and over analog I get wavey bands. That may be due to interference from channel 13. I'm not sure since my other channels look great. I used to have poor quality on 2-13 (CNN, ESPN, etc) but a new coax, amp, and splitter fixed that.
I'd like to not bother with a cable box when Buckeye turns off the analog signal. My guess is that Buckeye won't be cutting off analog cable in Feb'09 but they will at some point.
Marky_Mark896 09-13-07, 10:41 PM Well, I'm pleased to announce that Waterville's TWC HD offerings has been expanded to include Discovery HD Theater, TNT-HD, and Universal HD. We are finally up to 17 HD stations. That makes my decision of whether to move to Directv or stay with TWC more difficult. I suppose I'll wait until next week to see how the MPEG-4 broadcasts from D*'s new satellite are reviewed by members on AVS. I definitely don't want to switch to D* for more HD channels with lower PQ.
Apollo 13 09-16-07, 12:10 PM 645 and 643 says "Not Authrized for ordering information, press info" I have the basic HD and HD plus. Is there something else I need to have?

Hello,
I am new here and am located in Ada Ohio. I have recently bought a Phillips DVDR-3573H HD ATSC/NTSC Recorder. I currently have my antenna pointed towards the Toledo/bowling green area and have been getting all of the stations quoted above.
My question is: Recently over the past few days the 24, 30, and 36 related digital stations seem to not be coming in at all or are displaying artifacts on the screen.
I am assuming this is due to the weather? Does anybody having similar experiences? Is this due to there low power output currently for digital stations?
I have checked the related analog stations and they do come in but have some fuzziness but are watchable so, I know it is not that the stations are off the air.
If I am posting this in the wrong area, please lead me to the correct one.
Thanks

Yea -- I totally agree, I like sports too, but a good number of the last group of HD stations added were all sports! I want some more of the normal channels I watch like History HD, TLC HD, Discovery HD (not just theater), etc... I sent an email to buckeye requesting these channels and they passed on to their marketing dept, I encourage you to do the same to get counted.
Charlie Kocis 09-17-07, 09:36 AM The two new HD channels for 9/17 are up: FSN Ohio HD and National Geographic HD. Of course neither of them are showing any true HD material, but at least it's working, right?

Does anyone know if I can connect it to a second HDTV in another room via the HDMI connection and have it output to both TV's at the same time? I can handle the remote issue with an IR remote extender.

I am not sure with component and HDMI, but I can tell you I do this with my Slingbox with S-Video and Component, and it works fine. So it is worth trying. The thing to remember is that if you change the channel it will obviously change both outputs...

The thing to remember is that if you change the channel it will obviously change both outputs...Thanks for the reply Trabbic. Which Slingbox unit are you using? The research I did on the Slingbox appears that it is a device for accessing your TV programming via the Internet. Can you use it for the purpose I asked in my original question? In other words, could I run the output from Buckeye's box into the Slingbox then feed more than one TV with various cables? I called Buckeye and asked if the Motorola box would feed the signal to more than one TV at a time. Their answer was no - but I've received incorrect info from them in the past. The second TV I want to connect is a 26" LCD HDTV. It's for a bedroom so I can't go any larger than 26". If I could find one that accepts a CableCard, this would be a moot point. But I haven't seen any HDTV's that small that accept CableCard. I know there are several options to achieve what I want but I prefer to use only a coax or HDMI cable to the 26" TV. I REALLY need to keep the cables down to one. WAF you know.
RU FASTR 09-19-07, 07:18 PM The Moto 3416 outputs both HDMI and component at the same time. I believe the 6412 does as well.

fullwave2 09-26-07, 04:34 PM It's been a while since I posted here. Glad to see the forum is still fairly active. A couple quesitons. A friend says he picked up a new remote for his Moto DVR and it won't allow him to program the 30 second skip. Anyone experience this?
Also, back in February or so Buckeye was testing the Pace DVR which included the external SATA dirve hook up. Anything come of that? My wife is forever running ours to full capacity and an external HD would be great.
Thanks.

RU FASTR 10-01-07, 09:50 AM A question for those with Buckeye HD......
Why on earth does Buckeye place their XXX networks at 560, 561 & 562? Every time you go to 611 in the guide you also get to see that "Big Sausage Pizza 09" is on "Fresh" at the moment. Luckily I don't have any kids, otherwise I'd be more irritated by this.
John Cage 10-01-07, 11:32 AM I actually had one person who called and asked the same thing when I worked at Buckeye. Nobody I could find knew why they were listed there.
At least Big Sausage Pizza is vague enough for a kid to not realize its adult, but some of the titles aren't so ambiguous.

It always bothered me also, I found in the STB Setup menu under Locks, there is an Adult lock you can turn on. Basically it just replaces the title with "adult program". I am doing this from memory so if its not in the Locks menu look around a bit its there.
videditor 10-02-07, 09:31 PM The listings is supplied by TV Guide, BCS has nothing really to do with it-at least that I know of. No one probably ever thought of the guide lists when contracting out the channel assignments.

rocketknight73 10-04-07, 06:03 AM TBS HD looks really nice. It better be here to stay. That would be a huge tease.
Does anybody know of any more HD channels to be added soon? I like that Buckeye isn't sitting on their thumbs about adding new channels.:)

Yeah I saw them too... Kindva forgot about them quickly since I only saw them the once... I am guessing a tease into some Halloween special of some sort. No pun here but I thought I also saw a silouette of a fox's face. The mystery continues......
Kudos to Buckeye for managing the bitrate with the new HD channels. I am hardcore and real picky about PQ. TBSHD is absolutely fantastic in the PQ department.

According to Buckeye they stopped carrying this due to an issue with the firmware that causes the box to reboot itself at the same time every day. He mentioned that the one they do have in the office reboots at 11:00PM every day. Is this happening with yours?
He did say they do carry a new model Moto that has and eSATA port. The model number of that box is DCH3416. You can see it here:http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/02/motorolas-dch3416-m-card-enabled-hd-dvr/

I have the regular Motorola HD box(not DVR). While watching an HD channel(Fox yesterday) the screen will randomly change to static. I can still hear the audio through my surround receiver but the screen is all static. Changing to another HD channel also shows this static. If I change to a regular station(11, 3, etc.) I will get the picture back and then switching back to Fox(or other HD channel) will bring the picture back. This happened about 5 times yesteday. It has happened on multiple channels but it does appear to happen more on the local channels. It may only happen on local channels but I can't say for sure. Are any of you having this problem? Any idea on what the problem is? Is it the box, the Buckeye signal? Any info. would be greatly appreciated.
Were you watching Toledo or Detroit Fox? Fox is 720P. What happens when you view ABC? (they are 720P too) I assume NBC and CBS (1080I) don't do this correct?

one more thing... I have a friend using buckeye HD. Anytime FOX went to local spots, they lost signal!
UMBrowns 10-23-07, 11:16 AM I know it happened during the football game so it wasn't just when they did a local spot. It was Toledo FOX but like I said I'm not completely positive as to what channels it is happening on. It appears to be only locals but I haven't paid enough attention to know if it is only certain locals. Once it happens again I will mark down what channel and what was on(commercial, broadcast, etc.).
You mentioned 720p and 1080i, how would this affect it? Does the progressive scan cause problems like this?
John Cage 10-25-07, 01:02 AM I'm fairly certain the Motorola HD boxes only output the HD channels in whatever resolution is set. So if its set to 1080i, Fox and ABC will be scaled up by the box to 1080i. So the original resolution of the resolution of the network shouldn't be having that kind of effect.

I haven't tried that yet, though I'll give it a shot. I wanted to keep everything in one resolution though because when you go from 1080i to 480p
the TV stutters for a second to switch resolutions. Also, with 1080i/p I can activate a "zero" overscan mode, which is not possible with anything less. But maybe I'll just have to deal with it.

UMBrowns 11-09-07, 09:24 AM Well I thought I would give those of you trying to help me with my HD static problem an update. It's been around 2 weeks and I have only had the HD channel changing to static a few times. The odd thing is that it has not happened exclusively on local channels as some of you figured was the case. I wasn't positive so I gave it some time so I could monitor it more closely. 2 Sunday's ago it happened on FOX while watching a football game but it happened this week on ESPN HD and NFL Network HD. Any thoughts?
For a refresher this is what happens: I am watching an HD station(doesn't seem to matter which one at this point), randomly the screen will change to static but my audio is still coming through like normal. Changing to another HD channel shows the same static. If I turn to a standard analog station(3, 7, 8, etc.) I will get my picture back. Then changing back to the HD channel will bring back the HD feed.
I will probably contact Buckeye about this and see what they say and hopefully talk to someone that can provide some kind of help(I've never had any luck with this in the past). It's not a constant thing so I'm not that worried about it but I still would like it to be fixed.

I am sorry if you answered these questions before, but what cable-box are you using? How are you connected to your display (HDMI or Component)? What display do you have? And does this happen for HD recordings as well (assuming you have a DVR)?
jdcsi99 11-11-07, 12:11 PM Has anyone heard of anything... With DirectTV and such releasing so many HD channels in the last month or so, I was wondering if anyone had any scoop on Buckeye adding some new HD's. The last ones were ok, but all sports -- I want some regular stations added too (Discovery/History, etc...).

Look for CNN HD - by years end.
nboyd_monroe 11-12-07, 12:05 PM This is a reception/recording problem. I looked, but could not find other information on other threads about this issue, and because I thought it might be a buckeye specific question, so I've posted here.
I've run into an interesting situation when exporting HDTV signals from the buckeye favorite Motorola 6412. I have been using the firewire port on the back of the box to export live and recorded events to my PC for backup purposes. Recorded HD content eats up a lot of space on the box, so I export my recordings and sometimes live events to my computer to future use. However, I have just noticed this weekend that WTOL-DT (611) and NFLN-HD (627) do not allow for exportation through the firewire port. I have and continue to be able to export ABC (613) FOX (636), and NBC (624), and the all of the standard definition channels as well.
The interesting thing is that it doesn't matter whether I attempt to export live feeds on these two channels are if I attempt to export recorded feed I get the same non-results. Is it possible that buckeye is blocking such content from exportation?
Anyone have any thoughts?
rocketknight73 11-12-07, 10:17 PM What other channels should we be looking for? I'm gettin' bored of the non sports HD channels.

Anyone have any thoughts?Could be 5C from the local stations/networks.
nboyd_monroe 11-14-07, 09:26 AM I just learned about the 5c encryption and I checked the diagnostics screen on these two channels to see if they were in fact encrypted, but they are not. Now I am even more confused than I was before. I was expecting to find that these two channels were in fact encrypted, but it appears that they are not.
I guess it is going to take some more experimenting before I figure this one out.

611 is only recordable using a DVHS machine. It has RC and CCI flags set to prevent a noncompliant device from recording it. This is not a Buckeye issue but a WTOl issue. I hae emailed their eng with no luck. It is not 5C encrpt but another seperate flag issue. The RC flag for 611 is 0x01. It should be 0X00 like it was until about 3 months ago. 624, 613, 636 are 0x00.
Nothing you can do except get a DVHS machine if you want to archive HD.
jdcsi99 11-20-07, 03:25 PM In my monthly mail to buckeye requesting new/more HD channels, I got this response of some HD changes coming in December.
We will be moving ESPN HD, Sportstime Ohio HD, NFL HD and NBA HD to our HD Basic Package in December. Currently, some of those channels are included in our HD Plus Package and you pay extra for them.
They of course went on to say they are working diligently to get more HD channels, but no details on anything upcoming.
Personally, I think I will give it till February or so and if nothing new in the pipeline, I am going to consider DirectTV or Dish... I like buckeye, but I can't stand watching SD channels anymore and really want more HD options.

Have you actually seen the HD PQ on DirecTV or Dish? I am not affiliated with Buckeye in any way, shape or form....but the HD broadcast quality of Buckeye is possibly the best I have ever seen anywhere. DirectTV HD is just plain nasty.
Go to a local Best Buy and take a gander at the HD channels on DirectTV. On ESPNHD you get to watch artifacts dance around the screen...all over the ESPN logo and the ticker. The grass is swimming with Mpeg artifacts due to comression applied by DirecTV. Nasty...just plain nasty.
If you have a small screen and don't care all that much about picture quality then a SAT service may be for you.

If not, you are missing a substantial amount of HD programming. There is truly something for everyone every day and night in that group of channels. Combine that with the major network HD channels and you've got quite a bit of HD programming to choose from.
As one who has been there, done that, with both of the satellite services, I'll take Buckeye thank you. But, everyone is different. That's why Baskin Robbins has so many flavors of ice cream to select from.
jdcsi99 11-22-07, 08:06 AM Yea, I currently have the "premium" package, and I agree I think the PQ of buckeye is great, yet I find myself missing some old shows I used to watch on standard def (granted I could still watch them there... hahaha). I know buckeye is working hard to bring more content, I just hope to hear some more news in the next few months - every month when I pay my bill I am reminded how much I want more content. It would be really cool if I could just have HD channels and only a few SD channels for half my current bill since most of the channels I get in the "regular" packages never even get looked at.

I know what you mean - there are so many junk channels included - but, last I knew, it was no different with the satellite guys.

"Go to a local Best Buy"... thats where you went wrong. Any retail chain will not take the time to adjust the displays to get the best picture. They leave them at factory settings, and that means 100% sharpness and 100% brightness/contrast. Not to mention any picture enhancement technology the TV has included is usually set to on by default. Compression is hardly the case. This is what makes all those artifacts jump around.
My father in law has DirectTV-HD and every channel looks great on his plasma. A friend of mine has the Buckeye HD pack and this also looks great on his DLP. I guess my point is, it does not matter who your provider is, your going to get a great picture as long as you have the TV and have it set up the way it looks best to you. I myself am sticking it out with the most basic package from Buckeye and watching the local HD through the QAM tuner on my TV or with the OTA antenna.
jdcsi99 11-27-07, 07:06 PM I just noticed 619 - HD weather channel and 620 CNNHD are now active. I knew about CNN coming but I don't remember 619 being around. Hopefully more are coming soon too! Keep'em coming Buckeye!

Yea, I've known many people happy with Direct-TV... as long as I know Buckeye is actively bringing in channels, I will stick around.
DirectTV PQ is horrid. On a 50" it may be tolerable...but the compression artifacts are so nasty as to ruin the picture on any screen of significant size.
I understand some folks think its fine...they ignore the artifacting. I have sat in people's houses and watched as the grass on a football field pulsed with DirectTV artifacting while the owner proclaimed it a wonderful picture. Please....

I have a question guys. Does anyone else notice when watching TNT HD or TBS HD that there are flashes of video noise or sparkling colors? I don't notice this on any other channels. I even thought I saw it on ESPN HD when they show the NBA highlights from TNT HD . It's very annoying when trying to watch sports(NBA).
Does anyone else notice this or is it me?
For the record I don't notice this at all on any other channels , Xbox 360(HDMI) or my HD A2(HDMI). Thanks.

Are there any other TV stations in Toledo that haven't gone digital yet? They would be candidates, but there are only 7 OTA networks nationally that do HD, so if more digital stations show up in Toledo, they would be SD only.
You might be able to pick up the Detroit stations, which would add the two Toledo doesn't have; The CW & MNTV. Also, the Ann Arbor Ion station will probably offer HD next year, that would make 8 OTA networks doing HD.

With some slight inside knowledge, I am thinking Buckeye is just trying to get new HD channels on the air as soon as the contracts are signed. Making sure things are up & running before putting the word out. The just started some newspaper ads for CNN & TWC HD.
But yes... the forum keeps us HD nuts well informed.
Hey ended up working my first HD remote...think the pictures look good OTA, you should see them in the truck! -Should probably clarify this... I also do freelance sports field productions... I have used my remote for the tv before-haha

HDNLUVINIT 12-09-07, 06:49 AM For some time now, I've had an intermittent problem with HD channels dropping out or doing the "digital pixellation" dance so badly that they drop out. The channels affected are 649 and higher. I have a Panasonic plasma HDTV with a CableCard from Buckeye. Buckeye's solution is to send a "re-boot" signal to the CableCard. Beyond that, they want to schedule a service call. Well, I have little faith in the service call producing any results. A year ago, when the Buckeye tech came out to install the CableCard (for a $100 fee thank you), he had never done it before and had no idea what he was doing. He left with it not working. After he left, I got on the phone with a level two tech and together we got it up and running. Anyway, does anyone have a clue what might be going on here? It sounds to me like some kind of line interference because it doesn't happen all the time but does happen with increasing frequency. I have three other HDTV's in the house receiving their signal from Buckeye set top boxes and none of them experience this problem.

Hmmmm...I think I have started to notice the same issue.
This sounds very similar an an issue that existed a few years back. Pixel bursts and drop outs on the higher HD channels. The problem was an amp some where in the system and Buckeye had to replace it.
I had the same response from the customer service folks...they sent a tech out....and he then explained that they knew what the problem was...the customer service reps were simply not informed and that they would fix it soon. It was fixed within 24 hours.
Perhaps this is the same thing. Log complaints with Buckeye and perhaps they can track it down.

The tech proclaimed everything in perfect working order, blamed it on the TV and left. Set still in warranty (barely) by Panasonic. They sent out Household Centralized Service who said it would be a simple software update. It wasn't. They received and installed a new tuner board from Panasonic along with even more software updates. Problem continues. Panasonic (and Household Centralized Service) claim this is all they can do - problem lies with cablesystem. Cablsystem claims problem lies with Panasonic.
I tend to believe Panasonic and Household. Lucky for me, I purchased Best Buy service plan. Panasonic warranty ended 12-19-07. Now in the hands of Best Buy. New tech - Premier Electronics out of Mansfield has been assigned to case under Best Buy service plan. Stay tuned!

Jim,
This is not a Buckeye issue. I have never seen this message on any HD programming over the last few years and I watched every second of the Patriots game Sat night (NFL Network).

ben arnold 12-30-07, 09:15 PM Hi all
Hoping for some help. I live in Adrian Michigan and have directv. I expect DTV to offer HD Toledo locals in the next year or so but, would like to get them in the meantime. This means an antenna. Currently I'm using a small indoor antenna and when rigged just right I can get the digital HD channel's 11,13,24,30 and 36. These are the only channels I want. The problem with my set-up now is #1 I have to have the antenna in a place that isn't great...middle of floor. #2 My signal strength isn't fabulous 40-50%.
I'm hoping someone in my area (I'm 35 mi from the towers in Toledo) might be able to recommend a new indoor antenna that may work better for me. I do not want to mess with an expensive outdoor antenna for the sake of 12-18 months. Anyone have a suggestion that may help me? Many thanks in advance.

Does DISH offer the locals via satellite? The fact that DirecTV didn't offer Toledo locals a few years back was the reason I dumped them and went with DISH. Of course, I've sinced dumped them as well and went back to good old cable after an eleven year hiatus.
ben arnold 12-31-07, 10:19 AM Thank-you kindly for your reply. I don't want to turn this into a debate as there is a TV provider for everyone however, my cable provider is Comcast who I have no interest in doing business with. I was with Dish but switched to DTV because I'm a sports lover and Dish gave up the MLB Xtra Innings package which I enjoy and DTV carries it. It is a shame that DTV doesn't have HD locals yet but with a second new satellite going up early this year they will have the means to eventually add them. I guess what I'm saying is DTV is the best choice for me right now despite the HD locals situation. While I wait for them to be added I'm just looking to see if anyone can suggest a indoor antenna solution that may work better then my current set-up described in my previous post. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
Anybody know what buckeye is doing with the HD channel changes. I can't believe they would move all of the sports HD stations to the basic package and leave only those few on the basic plus. After they did i dropped the plus part as for 10.95 per month was not worth it to me. Wondering if they are going to add another tier or add more channels to make it more enticing. Any ideas as to channels or what they may be adding.
Looks like ESPN to 640, ESPN2 to 641, STO to 646, NFL to 647, NBA to 648 (BASIC HD moves anyway)
Thanks, and Happy New Year!
Additions made.

Try a Zenith Silver Sensor. Mount it as high as possible, in an attic perhaps.

Do you feel the Zenith is preferable to the amplified version offered by Terk? They otherwise appear similar. Thanks.
RU FASTR 01-05-08, 11:48 AM I can't speak to the effectiveness of the Terk. The SS worked well for me with no amplification, however I was quite a bit closer to the towers than you. I have not had a lot of luck with powered antennas over the years, they never appeared to make that much difference. Remember, with the Terk you'll need to have an power outlet close by.
I'm sure there are others here who have some first hand knowledge of the Terk. They may give you some firsthand info.

HDNLUVINIT 01-07-08, 06:54 PM FYI in case anyone is looking to obtain an HD set top box from Buckeye - they are out of all except for the HD boxes with the built in DVR I was told by the staff at the Southwyck office that they don't expect stock to be replenished until late this month or early next.

Interesting. What DVR boxes are they handing out now? I am old school and still using the Moto originals (6412).
HDNLUVINIT 01-08-08, 11:11 AM Interesting. What DVR boxes are they handing out now? I am old school and still using the Moto originals (6412).I don't know as I did not take one. I already have one of their HD DVR boxes (never use the DVR function) and did not want another one that will cost me $5.00/month more than their "regular" HD box. Buckeye already gets quite enough from me each month!
jdcsi99 01-08-08, 05:15 PM I got a DVR Motorola box DCH-3416 back in September -- I think thats there newest boxes.
RU FASTR 01-08-08, 05:32 PM I had the 3416 and all the software bugs to go with it.....then I found out they had the Pace TDC775D that can be used with an eSATA drive, so I picked one up. It had some software issues as well so I went back again and traded it for the newer Pace TDC778X.
The 778X supports eSATA drives, I have a 320gb Seagate drive connected at the moment. It also seems to operate much smoother than any of the other DVR's I've had. The 3416 would lock up frequently and drive me batty! It also gives you the option to upconvert 480i to 480p, 1080i or pass it through to the TV. The Pace seems to do a better job scaling 480i than my TV so I let it do the work. You can also choose to scale 720p but I think that's best left as is.

Yea, my box occasionally will hang (i.e. press a button and 10 seconds later it will finally do them all), but not too often. Recently its started fast forwarding like on its own while watching recorded content -- you have to hit pause then play again. It's only done it a few times now, but it seems to be starting more often. If it continues I will be looking to swap the box out, maybe I'll request the new pace box. Other than that the box has been pretty good.
RU FASTR 01-10-08, 09:08 PM Hooked up an antenna this evening and did some comparisons of OTA vs Buckeye. I watched a bit of CSI NY and Ugly Betty. Both programs did look better via antenna. I noticed some macroblocking in the shadows on cable but none OTA. I know it's been posted that Buckeye passes the HD through untouched but there is a noticeable difference, not huge but it's there.

That's not too surprising. There has to be some amount of compression applied to fit all those channels in the bandwidth allotted. What I want to continue to see is bit management that is superior to Satellite. When Buckeye's HD PQ declines to the level of DirectTV or Dish Network it will be a very sad day!
This is clearly becoming more and more of a challenge with the addition of more channels.

When I first subscribed to Buckeye HD a few years ago I compared the two and found PQ to be nearly identical, but they had far fewer channels back then. Now I regret hooking up the antenna last night.
As my wife watched Grey's Anatomy my eyes just locked on to shadows and backgrounds that were macroblocked. Once you notice something like that it you begin to look for it even when you don't want to.
I fear the future is more channels and lower quality. Another factor is screen size vs. viewing distance. Your average consumer buying 46"-50" sets and sitting 12'-15' away may not even notice a problem. The only complaints Buckeye will get are from guys like me who sit 11' away from a 60" set.

I have a few questions about your test... Did you run the cable through a cable box, DVR, or are you using the direct feed and the same OTA tuner? If it is a cable box, what box is it? Also what tuner are you using? Are you feeding your display with HDMI or component? if HDMI, what cable are you using?
A DVR/cable box can easily introduce those artifacts. For example I can see the difference between a moto 3416 and my pace box. The moto introduces noticeably more artifacts. (The pace is not perfect, but when it is running right I can see no difference between the straight feed and via the cable box.)
I do not doubt what you see, but I have it on VERY good information that Buckeye does no bit rate compression or shaping to their OTA channels. Now, they do shape the bit rate on some bundled channels...
BTW, I have a 60 inch 1080p screen and was sitting 10 feet away (normal viewing distance is 13'), and saw no macroblocking on Grey's last night recorded on my DVR...

The cable feed is through the Pace TDC778X via HDMI (BJC Series 1 (http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/hdmi-cables/index.htm)). This was live TV, not time shifted through the DVR.
The OTA was direct from the antenna to the TV (Sony KDS-R60XBR2, 1080P:)). I matched all the video controls on the antenna input to those already set for HDMI.
I also have a direct cable line to the TV (a home-run, not RF bypass from the box) but I didn't look at that last night.
RU FASTR 01-11-08, 01:02 PM trabbic -
Could you look at the diagnostic menu on the Pace and tell me what you have for SNR, AGC and bitrate for an OTA channel? Since you noticed no macroblocking I'm beginning to wonder if I have a signal issue.
A DVR/cable box can easily introduce those artifacts.....Very true. The STB alone could be the difference.

Just fyi, EVERYTHING through the DVR is time shifted, even if you just pressed the "live" button, or changed the channel. It is still sent to the hard drive first, then out. Also from what I read from a previous post, it looks like you have the box doing some scaling, which can introduce artifacts. This is the case with abc, the conversion from 720P to 1080i in the box, then your TV deinterlaces the 1080i content to 1080p. (I may be incorrect here as to what resolutions you are sending directly to your tv).
After some back and fourth I decided to send my TV everything straight through. The pace does have a nice scaler, but this way a progressive signal (720p) does not have to go through scaling the deinterlacing and then interlacing again. It is just scaled by my TV.
Run your test again with the tuner using the cable line directly, and your internal OTA. I am interested to see if there is a difference.
One last thought, this could also be because of some less than perfect connection inside your home (ie. an old splitter). I am not saying that buckeye is not to blame here, but it is possible...
EDIT: Sorry, I thought i posted this on Friday, but when I came in today it is sitting right here... Looks like we may have came to the same conclusion...
RU FASTR 01-14-08, 04:38 PM Thanks for the insight trabbic!
I only scale 480i.... 720p and 1080i are passed through. That was something I looked at as soon as I noticed there was a difference.
The house is new, so no old splitters and cable to worry about.
I'll look at this again and compare OTA and the direct cable line. That will eliminate the Pace as the culprit. Should be interesting.
TimmyToo 01-17-08, 09:48 PM I'll look at this again and compare OTA and the direct cable line.
I'm on the East Side and withing 3-7 miles from the four OTA towers out in Oregon. I was using an antenna for OTA before finding out Buckeye is passing those over the cable line. Hooked up to my Vizio 32" I initially thought the OTA was a better picture, but further testing showed the cable qam signal looked identical to my eyes. Now 32" isn't big and Vizio sets have their detractors, but I'm happy.
I did have a 6412 for a few years (Oct 04) hooked up to my 50" Toshiba projection set. That set was bought in 2001 so it wasn't as sharp as a plasma or LCD, so I can't say how much the 6412 would effect the signal.
I dumped my DVR about a year ago after switching to a HD Homerun and SageTV. I like to do what I want with my local recordings and the 6412 I had (well 3 of them over time) gave me too much trouble with firewire to my PC.
HDNLUVINIT 01-18-08, 02:13 PM UPDATE: Buckeye was out last Saturday, checked ALL cabling inside and out with their portable signal meter or whatever the box was.
Stay tuned!Update #2: Pioneer Electronics out of Mansfield never bothered to show. Best Buy re-assigned case back to Household Centralized Service. They were out today and again replaced the DT card. Problem remains. Actually, after they replaced the DT card last time, a new problem cropped up - in order to turn on the TV, you have to press the power button on the remote, then go behind the set, unplug the power cable then plug it back in - real handy huh? When I spoke with Best Buy's service plan department on 1-11, they promised me a decision regarding replacing the set by today. After the Household Tech left this morning, I called BB service plan folks again to advise that the latest fix did not solve the problem. They again assured me I'd hear back from them by close of business today. I'm not holding my breath. Frankly, I don't know where the problem lies - in the set itself or with Buckeye (as Household insists) but I do know I'm gosh darn tired of the whole situation and fully expect BB to replace the set. Both Buckeye and Household have been out three different times each. Both claim the problem is not theirs - which leaves yours truly stuck in the middle. Both do agree on one thing: CableCard enabled digital TV's are nothing but trouble. I would agree. For those who enjoy continuing sagas, I'll let you know the outcome.

Seems it's hit or miss as to whether or not they have the Pace in stock at Buckeye. I picked up another 775 this weekend from the Southwyck location and had to immediately exchange it for another as the first they gave me was defective (stabilization issue) and they told me they only had a couple 775's in stock and no 778's. They said if I was interested in the 778 I should keep calling to inquire as to whether or not they got any in. They weren't aware of any planned receipts.

Looking at Pace's website, they obviously look a little different. Both seem to have dual hd tuners, I think they both have 160gb hdd, and the 775 has both optical in and out the 778 has optical out only, but what other differences are there?? They seem almost identical.

I agree completely with the wrestling (and would love to watch BSG on SciFi HD as it airs as opposed to 4 months later on Universal HD), but would add SpikeTV HD to the list. Watching the UFC in HD would be intense. They show the WEC in HD on Vs, and it's absolutely beautiful.

The 778 has a cable card secured in the back. A new FCC-mandated system requires cable operators to provide new TV subscribers with set-top boxes that have CableCards as of July 1st, 2007. So how were the customers affected? The truth is there is very little benefit to this switch for consumers. Most people won't even notice if a CableCard has been inserted into their set-top box, because the card itself provides no additional features or functions. What's more, the rule applies only to new set-top boxes.

For me the biggest difference and a downside is the 778X doesn't have component video "pass through". I have the 775 as well and with the 775 I can feed my DVD source through the 775 via the component video cables and run one set of component video cables to the TV. Not sure why they took this away but I'm sorry they did.
Also, I've have two 775's in addition to the 778 and never had any issues with the 775's. I've run into a few critical issues with the 778 such as spontaneously losing my primium channel authorizations more than once plus a couple freezes and spontaneous reboots that's making me wonder if it's an issue with the 778 or did I just get a dud and have to swap it for another. Of course, your mileage may vary. ;)

They were downright nasty about it. So, I wheeled my non-functioning set back out to my van and drove to the Magnolia Home Theater up in Taylor, Michigan. I'm happy to report that not only did they not hassle me but they couldn't have been more professional and courteous. I realize this is not a subject that is of interest to most here but I did promise to let you know the outcome.

Compression usually means reduced quality. Most of the extra stuff they've been giving us, I don't even watch. I'd rather have the higher quality.

Excellent news! I hope they get the contract ironed out before BSG S4 in April.
It may sound assinine, but I have been seriously considering switching to DirecTV mainly to get SciFi HD before BSG starts again.

Found out today that BCS is planning on adding 18 HD channels in 2008. :)Hopefully they will be full-time channels, unlike WGN-HD-have yet to see anything in HD on that channel.

jubjub75 03-06-08, 11:15 AM Has anyone added an eSata drive to their Pace box yet? Any recommendations or things to stay away from?
I went to Buckeye last night to get a new cable modem (mine was about 6 years old and was finally giving up the ghost) and asked about the Pace boxes. The CSR (she might have been the best/most helpful CSR I've ever had) told me that they had the new Pace boxes, and mentioned to me that if you got one without an internal hard drive, it was $5 a month cheaper and I could still add an eSata drive to use with the DVR function, so I went that route. Now I just need to get an eSata drive and watch all the stuff on the old Motorola box before turning it in. I'm excited about having a bigger hard drive and also (hopefully) getting rid of all the problems/annoyances I've had with the Moto box.

I am using a Vanstar enclosure that seems to work for most people in the pace forums. I have no problems.
That said, I am not sure that the CSR was correct, the DVR feature is enabled at Buckeye, so unless they allow you to have that feature, it will not work.
Let us know what you find out...

Charlie Kocis 03-07-08, 10:33 AM hey everybody. just called buckeye [03/07 @ 10:15am] to ask about any upcoming hd additions. the lady had a memo saying the following channels would be added by "the end of march":
history, a&e, ion, ion life, q-ba, fox fx
thats how she read them from her memo. i'm assuming history, a&e and fx are the hd channels. wiki shows that ion, ion life and qubo are wastelands full of infomercials and reruns with very little to no original programming and most certainly not HD. oh, well. fxHD should be nice for dirt and nip/tuck.
that sucks about the new pace only having one tuner. definently a deal breaker.

jubjub75 03-10-08, 03:18 PM The Pace DVR is dual-tuner, and in my experience superior to the Moto box.
I'll concur with that experience. I got the Pace DVR on Saturday (I think it's the 787 model, but don't quote me on that) and it doesn't seem to have nearly as many weird pauses between a remote command and the unit executing as the Moto box did. Another thing I noticed is that the IR receiver on the box has a much wider range than the Moto box does. My AV cabinet sits so that all the gear is at about a 45 degree angle from where I sit with the remote. I had to sit the Moto box at an angle in the rack or else it wouldn't receive the remote signal. With the Pace, I have it straight in the rack and it still picks up signals fine. So far I'm 100% satisfied.
I do have one question, though: how can you tell if the esata drive you hooked up is working properly? I hooked one up (following the DVR's instructions) and the DVR appeared to load software to the external drive (took about 1 1/2 hours) and then booted as normal. Everything appears to be working, but when I record something, it still takes up about the same % of available DVR space as before (ie: a 1 hr HD show takes 6-7% of available space, per the DVR list). Since I added a 500GB drive to the 160GB internal, shouldn't the % used drop significantly?
HDNLUVINIT 03-10-08, 03:31 PM While that is possibly true... It does show a lot of repeats. There is a bulletin in HDTV Magazine (online) today announcing the Food Network and Food Network HD simulcast - same goes for HGTV and HGTV-HD. Both effective 3-31-08.
RU FASTR 03-10-08, 10:02 PM jubjub -
You need to go into the diagnostic menu and see if the external drive is recognized.
With the TV on hit "Power" then "Select" on the front panel. Look at HDD Status, that should tell you if both drives are recognized. There are threads on the Pace DVR's with more information should you be interested.

I have Buckeye and my American Idol was unwatchable from Tuesday.
We just tried to watch it last night, and it was breaking up every 30 seconds or so with drops in audio. Usually I would attribute this to my DVR, but we started to watch Wednesday's show and that was perfect. Along with your reports of poor quality, I am not so sure.

Marky_Mark896 03-28-08, 03:04 PM I swear... Time Warner Waterville sucks! I am getting nothing on some of my HD channels, pixelation on others. A total of about 1/2 of my HD channels are screwed up, and I am getting no help from TWC. They give us a run around everytime we call. Reset the box (there are 2 boxes in our house, I doubt both went bad at the same time). My neighbors are all having the same problems on their HD. My wife also "makes" me watch Idol with her. ;) The sound seems well balanced to me this year, although I do have my center channel up one or two db's over reference out of respect for my neighbors (and my sub -3db's :(). I did notice tonight the center channel more even with the surround efxs on the Gives Back Show. Though the guest musical portions were taped on Sunday Night. On the Moto cable box, correct me if I am off here, but Buckeye's "audio setup" with the "audio output" selections has NO effect on the output when using the boxes Optical Output. You can tell a change when the RCA's are connected. Maybe for tomorrow's show I'll make that change for the fun of it.

Oh man do i LOVE the 30 second skip. Hopefully sometime this decade I can use it to skip through commercials on USA-HD or SciFi-HD if Buckeye ever adds them. Seriously, almost everday I read on engadget about another cableco adding them to their lineups. And I wonder if Buckeye is doing anything to moving closer to eliminating analog cable. It seems like that is the only real option left to increase bandwidth for HD and internet speeds. They'll just have to eat the cost of providing cheap, bare-bones digital STBs for everyones garages, kitchens and kids rooms.

I've had Buckeye for about 10 months and have been very happy. I guess the only thing that would make me leave is if Buckeye doesn't keep up with the HD additions. Yeah, they're adding the three of them in a few days, but that still puts them behind many other cableco's. They need to add a couple of channels at least once a month.

It's whatever key you assign it to while programming (for instance if memory serves they had the blue B button i think). I put mine on the A button for simplicity. It will also affect your fast forward when you get up to 3 or 4 ff speed.

HD Basic
A&E HD
History Channel HD
HD Plus Pack
MGM HD
hmmm, I have a moto box, I added the codes but what is the skip button? is it the FFW button? If it is then it's not doing a 30 sec skip.[QUOTE=maxdefcon;13601424]Everyone knows about the 30 second skip, right?
You have to follow the directions precisely. You have to assign a button to be the "30 second skip".
maxdefcon 04-16-08, 02:49 PM Oh man do i LOVE the 30 second skip.
This is the route Buckeye is going...

stewart123 04-16-08, 03:03 PM Who here would leave Buckeye CableSystem if there was choice? Do you like the local service?
I totally would....I pay 115 bucks a month between cable and internet...This to me seems way over priced. The quality of the product is good, but the price is what would make me jump. Buckeye has made it so that we don't have a choice...call it a monopoly or what you will.

Totally disagree with you here on the "Buckeye has made it so..." Anyone can come into Toledo (like AT&T is) and offer cable services. Problem is... it's expensive to do. No monopoly, just they got here first. Not to mention the fact that video services are tough to do stand-alone. Programming is so expensive you must have other services to float the TV side. Ask yourself how many tech companies have re-invested over 200 million dollars to keep Toledo on the leading edge of technology?
I work in the TV world and have friends @ Buckeye... kool stuff is coming and the extra bandwidth they put in a few years back is really going to pay off soon.
It's similar to the old A/B system BCS had... the "B" side was put in as a possible return path. What was that "cube" box??? Something to do with video return, interactive something... anyway... it's thinking outside the box just like the extra fiber bandwidth they put in. Ever wonder why no other company has ever come in to Toledo...could it possibly be BCS is a good supplier, thus tough competition? I just dislike the whole monopoly line. Sorry for the lengthly post...Any utility is expensive these days, that is for sure.

The pricing doesn't bother me one bit. I pay $142 for TV/internet/phone and feel it's a fair deal. The service is excellent compared to anything else out there. The only reason I would switch is if a provider offered more bandwidth allowing a greater selection of, high quality, HD content.
HDNLUVINIT 04-17-08, 08:49 AM Who here would leave Buckeye CableSystem if there was choice? Do you like the local service? All things considered, I am pleased with my Buckeye service. I do pay a considerable sum each month - $172 - for their VIP service. I have all of the cable channels offered - except for the premium stuff like HBO, Showtime, etc, all of the HD offered, the "premium" phone service, high speed Internet service and two STB's one of which is also an HD DVR. IMHO, Buckeye's service is second to none when you have a problem. Sometimes it takes some extra effort to get your problem routed beyond a front line tech but once you do, the issues are generally resolved promptly. My only gripe would be the monthly fee for the STB's - a bit high I believe. But, what other company can you call 24 X 7 X 365 when you have a problem? Very few in my experience.
myboat245x 04-19-08, 08:44 AM Anybody know what the TVGOS host channel is on Buckeye?
Thanks

Ghoulardi 04-20-08, 04:19 PM Thanks for the replies jdcsi99 & maxdefcon. I got the 30 sec skip to work. On the last step, I had to hold the blue B button down til it blinked twice, which it didn't specify in the directions.
On another subject, "Sports Time Ohio" channel 646 here, hasn't been working since Friday. I called and Buckeye Cable just says there having problems.
I'm missing all the Indians games in HD. I'm pretty pissed because that's one of the main reasons I got HD this year!

Yeah, that sucks. I can hardly watch the low-def broadcast, it's pretty pathetic.

Glad you got the 30 second skip to work. That's strange, I had a few other people (family) try the instructions from my site and it worked without holding the button chosen.

No offense taken - It is very difficult for other providers to come in here. Similar to AT&T they own the lines in Toledo which makes it a monopoly until they are forced to lease the lines out - much like what happened with AT&T. What you must understand is, me as a customer, has absolutely no choice in provider. I must go with Buckeye for internet or tv. Rumor is Verizon is going to put Fiber in our area soon enough.
What makes me more mad with Buckeye than anything is the fact that they charge me an extra 10 bucks a month if I don't have at least 2 of their services. 40 bucks a month for 1.5 mb down and 125k up is extremely expensive to what other areas have. If I want high speed, I cannot go with dish tv because it would be more expensive after the price reduction.
My girlfriends folks from Cleveland have 1.5mb down and 512k up and they pay 19.99 a month. They do not have to get cable tv through that company to get any type of break. Why is it that we must pay almost double? Buckeye has definitely improved their performance.
I definitely appreciate customer service at Buckeye. They are a good company for user support. Remember, Buckeye is owned by the Block family who also owns the blade (another monopoly in Toledo).
What kind of cool stuff is coming?

What are you comparing the service to? Dial-up? Satellite? Sure cable is always going to be the better service...but at what price? When someone controls they market, they can charge whatever they want.

For our $142 we get 188 channels (33 are HD) , a DVR, 7mbs internet as well as telephone service. I work with someone who has DSL, they pay almost $70 for phone service and a slower internet connection.
I have no problem paying MORE for BETTER service. However, Buckeye can only charge what the market will bear. If they jumped the price for what I have to $250, I'd cancel. It's not worth that much to me.
arrabyla30 04-21-08, 04:21 PM What DVR box is Buckeye currently distributing? I am a new subscriber (3 weeks) and they gave me a Moto 6412 that is slow, freezes up, reboots, drops audio/video and pixelates video on a regular basis. A friend of mine has a newer looking box and I've been reading about some new Pace box that has been distributed. Just curious if I got the shaft with some old piece.
Thanks,
Adam

Bingo!
Sorry for the tease... BEX speeds going up-no additional charge...SPEED HD in talks. And even more BEX speed coming, but really super duper.
Josh00Si 04-22-08, 10:30 AM I have heard rumors of BEX going to synchronous speeds vs. the current industry standard of asynchronous. This would definitely be a big step forward for a local company to offer synchronous service. I think its all dependent upon the new DOCSIS 3.0 standard and how quickly it is adopted.
Are one know if there is anything in the works to add USA HD? I really want to watch the new season of Burn Notice in HD when it returns in either June or July.

I assume the move to DOCSIS 3.0 will require a new cable modem. Does this effect the bandwidth available for TV at all?
And most importantly........when do we get it :D
stewart123 04-24-08, 02:18 PM The biggest question is going to be price?

My guess is if 100 Mbps or even 200 Mbps can be an assumed connection speed for internet I don't see how it would really affect HD. I think the minimum standard for 720p is around 12 - 15 Mbps and 1080i is around 25 - 30 Mbps. This is at mpeg2, mpeg4 the requirements drop just a bit. Not to mention, the switch to all digital will give them even more bandwidth.
Buckeye did a lot of work a few years back with their HFC network and I just saw them in my neighborhood last week putting in more cable so I would hope they are prepared. Maybe they will decide to do a little FTTH, wouldn't that be nice.
I still want to see a little HD VOD as well.
HDNLUVINIT 04-24-08, 09:21 PM Not to mention, the switch to all digital will give them even more bandwidth.
Um.......I believe they are going to carry analog and digital - even after 2-17-09.
RU FASTR 04-25-08, 09:18 AM A question for those with internet expertise.... How much faster will web browsing really be with these increased speeds? At some point doesn't the speed of the website server determine how fast pages load? Even if you had say, a 1Gbs connection, is it going to be noticeably faster than 100Mbs?

It may be a year or so (after 2/09) before BCS drops analog and makes every TV in your home require a STB. Especially with the new deliverly system. Most homes have one STB and non converter signals in bedrooms, etc. The general public will be mad when each tv will have to have a STB. Guess you could use the argument that a satellite service needs one for each tv.

Videditor,
Fox News fires up an HD version of their news channel on Thursday. Seems this would be a natural for Buckeye since they have Fox Buisness HD. Any word of Fox News HD?
Also..I do enjoy the new channels, particularly History HD. I was suprized to find that MGMHD is only pushing 12 mbits. I wonder if this low bitrate is how MGMHD feeds it or if Buckeye is applying extra compression to this particular channel?

I think your web surfing would remain the same. I think the faster speeds will make way for newer services. IPTV, Netflix "Watch it Now" feature looks great with the faster speeds. Personally, I have an AppleTV and having the faster speeds loads HD Podcast/Movies/Trailers in no time. There's definitely pros for these faster speeds and will be used outside of your normal web surfing/email.
Charlie Kocis 05-05-08, 01:47 AM Has anyone noticed that Buckeye's internet speeds have gotten faster? For the last few weeks speed tests have shown up to 8mbps down/600kbps up. Is Buckeye giving everybody a little bit more speed on purpose or is it a goof? Oh and WHERE ARE USA AND SCI-FI HD CHANNELS!!!! Seriously, your breakin my balls here!!!
