Yeah, Minneapolis. It's back up and running now, after being "no data available" for the last four days.

The cable bill today came with an Xfinity branded page trumpeting the movement of the Music Choice channels from the 800s to the 400s in order "to make room for the new HD channels coming your way soon". This switch is effective October 12. That's in line with the St. Louis Park phase 1 shut off on October 19 with phase 2 on October 26, and finally the launch of the new HD channels on November 2.

So yesterday the Comcast contractor came to bury the temporary cable that was installed last week. Unfortunately, it was installed while I was not home. The installer ran it under the rocks along some landscaping, then under the deck. It is not buried in either of these places. I've had terrible issues with animals (probably rabbits and squirrels) chewing threw the cable. There were even chew marks this morning, less than 14 hours after the cable was installed! He left his number, so I'm going to call and ask him to come back, but his primary issue for choosing the route that he did was to avoid tree roots. The last cable that was buried popped above ground in 5 places to hop over tree roots!

The only real solution is a much longer run around the root structure of two trees. I get the sense the contractors are not keen on this length. Any suggestions to get a decent cable that won't be chewed up in a matter of weeks?

Not really -- but you could run the cable inside metal or PVC conduit pipe.

The cable guy was very prompt and apolegetic this morning. By this morning, even more insulation had been chewed. He said he'd could not believe it had been chewed so much within 36 hours of burying. Frankly, neither could I -- especially this time of year when there are plenty of other things for rabbits and squirrels to nibble on.

I'm now interested in finding a spray or liquid to spray/squirt along the whole route of the buried cable, including the little bit where it is uncovered for 12 inches where it enters the house. Thankfully, he did put a little sleeve of plastic over that area.

I checked the signal strength before and after his visit, and on the 4 channels and on the Cable modem, signal strength and SNR was the same, which was good.

I don't have Comcast cable at the moment, but was planning on ordering when the new HD channels arrived.

I just noticed on the Comcast website when I put in Oakdale's zip code it shows an updated listing, with all the HD channels in the 800's.

Can anyone in the Oakdale/Maplewood area confirm that the new channels are live?

Last year we lost power to the house for an afternoon when a gopher chewed into the buried electrical feed from the street and severed the neutral! We also lost several power surge power bars, and the sprinkler system controller in the garage (an almost new high-end one too, damnit, that one wasn't plugged into a power surge power bar --the replacement is tho) before we got house power shut down.

Some kind of flexible non-rusting metal mesh would be required as sheathing, I think, and its probably just too expensive for mass use.

There is a full-page Xfinity "network upgrade" ad in today's StarTribune.

This must mean dates for the Minneapolis system will be announced (letters to subscribers) in the next few days. It has very little in detail.

A coworker just came over and said that this transition to SDV will require an external USB "tuning adaptor" from Comcast in order for my TiVo with cable card to continue working. My question is, will Comcast send this adaptor out to everyone who uses a cable card or is it something I need to request prior to the transition?

I would just wait until they announce specific plans. There is no SDV coming here in the short term. Comcast hasn't even announced what they'll be doing in Philly (for Tivos) where they are first going to try real-world SDV. There WILL be a tuning adapter needed -- who supplies it and pays for it is unknown at this time.

This happened to me today. I'm in 55405. I called Comcast and the representative said that they were working on the issue and that it should be resolved for everyone in 2-3 days. I asked if everyone with TiVo's would have their accounts credited with 2-3 days of not being able to record TV and she asked me if I could hold. When she returned, she said that my account had been credited $7.72 and that she sent a reset signal to the cable card in my TiVo. She said they've done that several times today and that it usually resolves the channel listing issue. After hanging up I checked the TiVo and the channel listing was still incorrect. I pulled the power to reset the TiVo but when it came back up the channel listing was still not correct.

So, then I called Comcast back and got a different representative. He had no idea what the prior representative was talking about when I told her she sent a "reset signal" to the cable card. He said all the programming data comes directly from TiVo and that Comcast has no control over it. He put me on hold for a few minutes and when he came back he said there was an email sent out within Comcast from TiVo saying that TiVo made the mistake and that TiVo would be correcting it within the next 2-3 days.

So, I then called TiVo technical support. They immediately knew what I was talking about and admitted it was a problem on their end. Their suggestion was as you posted, switch to zip code 55439. I mentioned that Comcast said the issue would be resolved in 2-3 days and he said that was incorrect. The channel listings for 55405 will not switch back to reflect the current channel lineup. On October 18th I'll need to switch back to 55405 when it'll finally reflect reality (but 55439 at that time would likely change to the new listings as well).

So, three different representatives kind of agreeing on some things and not on other things... Bottom line is, switching to 55439 got the correct channel listings back. I'll just have to remember to switch back to 55405 on October 18th.

Is there any word if St. Paul/Anoka is getting HDNet this week or anytime soon? Seeing that quite a few markets are getting the channel its a bit unfair that we are still left out.

Difficult to say. In Blaine I didn't start seeing the scrolling messages until AFTER receiving a letter advising me of my analog shut-off date.

I have a feeling Comcast is holding off announcing dates for the Minneapolis system until the St. Paul system is completed (all subscribers have the new HD channels).

Office packed with people getting new boxes. I picked up 2 new hd boxes for my house. It is criminal what they charge people for a HD box each month for poor outdated technology. They need to deploy whole house gateways!

Thanks for the update, very good news indeed.

But, I can't help wondering why they are bothering to move the Music Choice channels. HD is already 400-446, they could just as easily fill out the rest of the 400's with the HD additions......

Oh well, it will be nice to get the HD channels back after losing them when I moved up here from Burnsville (lets just hope the Tivo gets updated promptly!)

You can tun offf receiving messages on your STB. I like that with the new guide multiple messages are now possible.

One thing -- with the AnyRoom DVR service you get a primary DVR with a larger hard-drive.

No I think the woman I got last week has an attitude problem period. ;)

I just installed my DTAs today. It took over an hour of chatting with a rep to get one of the DTAs working. The other one still doesn't work (even though the rep said it would once it finished downloading service info). I then had to struggle to get the DTA and TiVo (series 2) to happily work together.

Once all that is done, I find that I can't get some "basic" digital channels (Military, BBCA, Science, FUSE, FSN, etc). Of course, I didn't get them before either but I figured it would be nice to get some benefit from being forced to digital. :mad:

Finally got my letter in Eden Prairie last night. Official cutoff date of the analog channels is November 8th.

Our apartment complex includes Basic 2 as part of our rent and what I found interesting was that Comcast reps are actually going to be onsite for a total of 8 hours for residents who need additional equipment as part of the switchover.

I'd imagine the new HD channels will be live a few weeks after that.

Thought I'd report that the Cisco HD boxes DO NOT PLAY NICE with Vizio TVs. The box reports an HDCP violation and gives the purple message "please use component cables to watch TV". TV is from 2008 and clearly says it supports HDCP in the manual. I can get it to work by having a blu-ray player handshake the port, and then plugging the box in. I've been doing that every morning and then leaving the TV on all day, but threw up my hands and ordered a component cable. It's a 21" secondary TV so I doubt I'll see the quality difference. The other Cisco HD box works perfectly with my main setup, an Epson 6500UB projector. I've seen other reports on the net of these boxes refusing to work with Vizio TVs over HDMI also. Comcast offered to do a truck roll but I declined, figuring they'd blame my TV and then charge for the call.

Make that November 4 for St. Louis Park. The November 2 date was either a typo on my part or incorrect, but I've called to ask about the new HD channels a few times since my last post out of a desire to get the same answer each time and thus some confirmation. The answer each time has been November 4, so I'd say that's a pretty safe date at this stage.

FSC standard def is finally back to 4x3 "full screen" and no longer stuck in letterbox mode. Now just gotta get FSC HD.

The beefed up version with those important functions and some others will be rolled out in the first half of 2011. Apparently an even more advanced version of the guide with 16:9 resolution, channel logos, and other features is being beta tested by Comcast employees and will be available to SA/Cisco customers with the most sophisticated boxes in 2011. We'll see what happens there.

There is no connection between the new guide and features and World Of More. So SA/Cisco customers will get the new HD channels independently from and long before any new guides.

That can't be soon enough for me. I wanted a 2nd DVR so I went to the minnetonka store. All they had there were old refurbished SA boxes. Some of them are in really bad shape. I asked if they had any new ones and she claimed they only had refurbished at the moment. She gave me what looked like the least beat up one, but the last renter must have been a heavy smoker because it reeks of cigarette. I'm normally not a complainer, but really I've paid their high prices for a few years between tv/internet and requesting a new box doesn't seem to be asking too much. I would have preferred a RNG200 box which is my box #1 and works perfectly.

So, hopefully Anyroom DVR will resolve the renting of 2 DVR problem and generate new equipment. If anyone has any ideas on how to obtain a non refurbished dvr in the meantime, let's hear it. I was told I just have to keep checking...and that means driving to the store since they don't have a phone number....

Tell them it is a box you just picked up and say you don't want a replacement unless a new model is available -- because you don't want to go through the problems you are (making up that are...) happening on this crappy old box you were given again. I'm not in Eagan (I'm in Blaine) but your HD channel line-up should be very close the list below. For me, the picture quality and reliability of the TV service since receiving the network upgrade has been rock-solid.

I talked to Comcast for a little bit today. It sounds like within the next month or two the St. Paul/Anoka system will be getting more HD channels. No idea on what channels at this point but I suspect at least HDNet will be one of them.

At this time no. The woman I talked to said that she got a memo saying that our area is due to get a second round of HD channels within the next month or two but nothing beyond that. I'm speculating HDNet will be one of them based on Comcast wanting to unify the lineups between the Minneapolis and St. Paul system. Either that or Comcast will drop HDNet entirely from Minneapolis which makes no sense given Comcast had recently added the channel in other markets.

I don't know about Maplewood, but NW Suburbs and Golden Valley switched at the same time as Brooklyn Center.

First round of analogs went off July 20, second round 3 weeks later (Aug 10), and the new HD's a week after that (Aug 17).

You need to get DTAs for any of your TVs that are "cable-ready" and are currently getting only analog channels if you want to receive any channels above channel 22.

Yes, this means you will be getting new HD channels soon -- more than likely by the end of year (but the date on your letter from Xfinity will give us a better idea of when it will likely happen).

I haven't checked to know for sure that they're gone, but the analog channels were supposed to go away in two phases on October 19 and 26. The new HD channels are supposed to start on November 4.

I live in downtown Minneapolis and just got the letter earlier this week. It says the network enhancements will happen on November 30th. It's been a loooooong time coming.

Oh, and the letter mentions nothing about new HD channels.

Just noticed the Ovation channel back after many years on ch 181 in the Plymouth area. Are they just sneaking in channels every once in a while? Wonder if Boomerang or Smithsonian are coming--Comcast has shows on demand for those channels.

This whole switch is driving me nuts. In Bloomington, I currently have 2 HD Boxes, for the big TV's and 5 other TV's that were all quite happy to have the cable plugged into their little backs so the kids could watch Comedy Central and Cartoon Network:)
So now I have to have these little DTA boxes on the other 5 TV's so Comcast can get an extra $1.99 times 3 ( 2 were free).
With the DTA's I lose the local HD, 4.1 etc.. that the QAM tuner would pull in so I ether forgo those or put up a roof antennae.
End result is a $6.00 increase in the monthly bill for less TV options.

Judging by the St. Louis Park schedule, you should get new HD channels about December 15th.

Use a splitter in the rooms with a DTA. We have a 40" Mitsubishi in our bedroom with a DTA that we use a splitter with, and we still get HD locals in the clear with QAM.

I live in Richfield and the switchover is supposed to be happening EOW. I called Comcast yesterday and they told me that they will be doing some channel work today and that the additional HD channels would be up and running tomorrow. I'm assuming the channel work would be changing the lineup, but I don't know for sure. When I get home from work I'll check the TV to see if anything is different.

I'm really looking forward to the new HD. It's been a long wait.

We've had the many of those already for a few weeks. I know we've had HDNET (420) for at least 2 weeks. I don't see any change yet from last weekend.

Meanwhile no word on HDNet being added to St. Paul/Anoka. Got a woman who sounded pretty new and was reading from a script tonight.

Since the HD channels haven't turned up in Saint Louis Park yet, I called to ask what's up. The CSR said the channels are being added to homes bit by bit and should be in place for everyone by tomorrow and if nothing has turned up by about 9:00 PM or so, to call them so they can get on the case.

I guessed I must have missed an announcement of some sort, but when and why did Comcast cable adopt the name "Xfinity"? Was there a change in ownership or was this just for "branding" purposes?

It's all branding. The ownership/management is the same.

Officially they wanted to make a splash now that they have HD channel offerings that are comparable to the satellite and, where available, fiber optic carriers along with digital voice, faster internet speeds, some new features like online and mobile device remote DVR programming (Motorola areas only right now), and their online library of programming which includes both unique content and content hosted by Hulu. The Comcast name has been phased down in favor of Xfinity in every market where the World Of More has been implemented.

Unofficially the Comcast name has taken such a brutal and largely deserved beating due to consumer anger over poor customer service that they're going with the Xfinity name in the hopes of a fresh start since, in tandem with the new products and services, there seems to be a legitimate effort at treating customers better. Those efforts haven't always led to results, but at least they're acknowledging how badly things were in the past and are making some strides towards fixing things.

I just received a message from TiVo announcing a major channel lineup update...yep, the HD channels are being added now in Richfield. The old spots for the network channels are still there but all of the new channels are there in the 800s as well. I'm updating my TiVo boxes now and I'll see how it all shakes out.

The new HD channels are on in St. Louis Park as of this morning. They haven't duplicated the long standing HD channels in the 400s yet in the 800s, as is standard practice everywhere, but that will probably happen in short order. It's done at last.

I'm really happy about this. I first heard about the World Of More and the expanded HD offerings back in 2008 and looked on jealously at the channel lineup enjoyed by relatives in California during a visit last year. It was quite upsetting that the Twin Cities seemed to be left towards the rear of the line.

Then they started the switch over, but left the SA areas on the shelf for months while favoring the Motorola areas (which have also received a new on screen guide while SA areas plod along with the dated SARA guide). It's great that they finally got it done here. Hopefully Minneapolis and the other towns will be taken care of in short order.

Do you have a Tivo, or are you using a Comcast STB? Just curious, because I have a Tivo and noticed my lineup was updated on Friday, but sometimes they are early. If it's updated on the STB's, that would be a good sign.

I am running STB's in EP. The channels showed up in my guide and I was able to cycle thru them but with no picture( except showtime 920) on Fri and Sat. Then Sun and this morning, they were not there!!!!! Argh!!!! I feel like I am dating the ultimate tease.....

I thought the Twin Cities were the last big market to go, but have to take it back. Judging from posts on the Houston thread, that even larger market hasn't been upgraded for World Of More yet at all. Houston is another Time Warner legacy market and is a hodge podge of Motorola and SA boxes as well.

But Houston even before the upgrade had more bandwidth available and had a lot more HD channels than we had prior to WoM. Also, they were a mixed Moto/Cisco system -- but have switched to now be ALL Cisco.

Well, the letter I received said something about that I must have digital equipment on my current "cable-ready" TVs if I wanted to continue receiving channels 23-99. I had to do this by the time the "network enhancement goes live" and a date for the "network enhancement" was given. That is the date the analogs will be gone by (give or take a day or two).

Half the channels in Eden Prairie are now gone, replaced by a loop explaining that you now need a digital adapter to see this channel. This happened sometime yesterday, and I believe this phase lasts for a week. Then the rest of the channels go next week, and then the HD channels are added within a few days.

Bring it on, I'm ready to get Comedy Central and FX back in HD!

Anyway, we at least have some of the new 800s channels in Edina. It appears any channel we already had in HD (ie ESPN or locals) has stayed in the 400s and all the new ones are in the 800s. Happy with that.

Well, I spent some time on the phone last night with both Comcast and TiVo trying to get to the bottom of the new channel situation.

I have three TiVos (yes, I know, insane) and I'm in Richfield. I currently have access to all of the new HD channels in the 800s but no programming guide. There are some duplicate channels from the current band of HD channels in the 400s.

I called Comcast first to ask them if the transition was done in my area. According to this guy, he said it was complete. But I don't know if I trust him ...he also told me to get programming information on my TiVo for these new channels, I'd need a cable card. Which I already have. Which allows me to view the current HD channels. His best bit of advice was suggesting I call TiVo.

So I get a TiVo rep on the phone and he's very helpful, first trying to switch my lineup to a different area in hopes that will get me programming info. But because the Richfield channel lineup is distinctly different (maybe because they aren't really done transitioning) the best he could do was send in a request to the TiVo scheduling people to create a new lineup for my zipcode and then they would kick out an update to all people impacted. Frankly, I'm surprised I'm the first to call on this issue. Well, maybe I'm not...but he made it sound like I was.

Hopefully, I'll see the updated channel info within five business days as he promised. That being said, I still feel like there's more information to get from Comcast on the matter. I may call again to see if I can talk to someone that isn't quite so clueless.

It should be about two weeks after all of the analogs are removed (except channels 2-23 or whatever it is) that you start seeing the new HD channels. Hopefully Thanksgiving doesn't get in the way and your additions don't get pushed until after the holiday.

Yep, I had the same problem. An updated program guide prematurely hit early in the fall in Richfield and totally messed things up. I switched the zipcode in my TiVo setup and that fixed it. I actually just switched it back to my proper zip last week in anticipation for the Xfinity switch.

From what the TiVO guy told me, sometimes these program guide mess-ups happen and slip through the cracks. Personally, I think there's more to it than that (coming from Comcast's side of things) and we'll see how it plays out in the next couple of days.

More than likely -- I am basing it on previous roll-outs. You may want to try calling -- if you're lucky you may get a CSR that will give you a date.

MyDVR won't be avaialbe for the Cisco/SA boxes until the upgraded guide is deployed in the first half of 2011.

I know this is a little off the current topic but...does anyone else ocassionally experience very short (a fraction of a second - just enough to catch your attention) audio dropouts in the current (before digital conversion) high-def channels? I haven't really paid a lot of attention as to which channel(s) I am experiencing this on, but the last time was on KSTP during the Country Music Association Awards show the other night (music seems to draw it more to my attention...it was just kind of in the background while I was working on the computer). I really don't feel like tearing stuff apart trying to figure out if the issue is in the signal, the Electroline drop amp (the last Comcast technician that was out gave his blessing to use of this), the RNG200, the Denon AV receiver (just a few months old), or some ghost in a connection somewhere. I don't even want to call Comcast and ask because they will want to come into the house and replace all of my cable ends. The problem seems to go away when I change to a different channel, so that makes me suspect the signal quality rather than the hardware. The dropouts happen maybe once every few minutes (or longer) and only one at a time (no rapid repeating of the dropout).

I'm in Minnetonka/E.P. are and the past couple of months have been having audio/visual issues for just a second. I don't know if it is pixelation or macroblocking with audio getting chopped. It happens on recorded programs with me especially HD channels like ESPN HD

Looks to me that you are getting bad (probably weak) signal. I would call Comcast and have them come check it out.

Are you using a signal amplier? If so, try removing it, you could also be getting too strong a signal.

Also, I was seeing PQ like that at one time a few years ago and it ended up being that one of the tuners in the DVR was slowly faling. The other one was fine. That made it take a while to figure out what was going on.

The wife watches Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters, again both on ABC. Will see if audio drops occur on the other TV with a Scientific Atlanta 3250HD box. I will be watching IRT Deadliest Roads on the History channel using the RNG200.

I've been getting audio drop-outs on several channels, and even some minor macro-blocking ( blotching pixels ) from time to time, and I think some cable boxes are going to need to be flashed and or updated to the speed transfer, seems to me that after the digital switch, this has been happening more and more, bottom of the line, comcast states on their commercials that they are 100 percent ( LOL ) about customer service, so if your not satisfied, call them until you are, and hold them to it, I'm noticing it on locals too, which tells me it's their broadcast speed and or hand-shake issues, where the only way is the boxes will need to be updated, and or newer boxes with faster transfer rates..... Oh my HD box is a Motorola, and it was used when I got it, and I've had it 3 years this month.

Out of cable for 24 hours. Now back on. For once I think the customer service was good. They had a call back once resolved. Also a call so I did not have to sit on the phone waiting for support.

If you're not getting satisfaction from calling in, I've had a lot of success escalating to We_Can_Help@cable.comcast.com or via their ComcastCares Twitter account. Extremely competent customer service people are engaged when you contact via those methods.

As part of the network enhancement, Comcast removes many signal amplifiers and reconfigures others. (Fewer amplifiers are needed when reducing the analogs like they are.) If you are getting a poor quality picture you should definitely call it in.

In 2 plus hours of watching ABC on the SA box, the wife heard no audio drop outs. I heard exactly one (longer than usual) in two hours of History Channel and local Fox.

If one of the tuners in the RNG200 is going bad, is there anyway to figure out which one? If you have it set to record a program and then watch live another channel, will the DVR always default to a specific tuner?

Sorry, I do not know how to with a Cisco box. My experience is with the Motorola boxes. There are excellent Wikibooks articles on the Motorola boxes. You could try searching there or here in the "HDTV Recorders" forum.

Finally got my DTA's activated in Minneapolis on the third try. Our main TVs have regular boxes, so I wasn't in a huge hurry. My wife was getting tired of the scroll on one of the auxiliary TV's.

For a process they did with thousands and thousands of customers, I found it to be quite cumbersome. It took 2 phone calls and an internet chat to activate them. The first call yielded nothing but boxes that wouldn't work. The second call yielded the same with a warning that they'd probably have to come out and look at my house and if it was wiring in my house, I'd be charged for a truck roll. Decided to try the online chat for activation and they activated immediately. Incompetence of the call center reps? Who knows.

Comcast has delivered consistently good product to me over the years but their service has been horribly inconsistent, and this process was no exception.

Looking forward to the new HD channels in a few weeks.

Anyone else in the St. Louis Park or surrounding areas receiving periodic pixalation? Cable was out briefly in the area on Saturday (27th) and when it was "fixed" I still had pixalation on HD WCCO and KARE11. Called and they sent a signal out to box - The RNG200( The SA and the RNG150 box and TVs were both fine) This process fixed it but it was back yesterday on the same channels?

What really causes this? Is it basically the result of the switchover. If so, I'm wondering if it will improve when it's complete. The rep didn't seem to have any info of why or completion date. Seemed to be reading from their basic script.

I called and was told any information related to new channels will be communicated via the normal process of emails or flyer inserts. Amazingly unhelpful.

The price increase will come regardless of service level change. Sure, they may promote the increase with "Over the last year we have added 70 HD channels" or whatever, but the fact is, if the price is going up in January, it's going to go up regardless.

Now, if they add an HD charge, you might be on to something, but they certainly won't raise EVERYONE's rates because a select number has more HD channels (remember, not everyone has HD hardware yet, shocker I know).

Also, as others have pointed out, they have been adding HD channels to cities in this market since March, with no price increase. And, IIRC, they still have a few cities left, including Minneapolis.

I'm going to guess that they won't be, until the channel realignment happens here sometime (next year?). That realignment will put all the HD channels in the 1000's (exactly 1000 above the SD version, so 4 HD would be 1004 in the new lineup).

It's not like they are taking up any bandwidth, as they can map the same chunk of bandwidth to as many channel numbers as they want to.

I am glad that they are duplicating them in the 800s, because now on my Tivo, I can remove all the 400's, and keep all but the locals organized in the 800's.

The entire TC area will be moved to Comcast's new national channel line-up sometime after the WoM upgrade is complete.

Eden Prairie must share some sort of technical head end with Bloomington, because all of the HD channels are also live in EP as of today, although there did appear to be a few that I couldn't receive, not sure if that's a local problem or not though.

The doubles are still in place in the Blaine area. Its not like as if the doubles are taking extra bandwidth anyways since they all go to the same frequency. I just wish the local channels would get mapped to the 800s so I can quit needing to remember they are in the 230 area.

I agree with MP(or BlueJeansCables) links to both at the top of your page, but in a pinch Menards isn't too bad. Currently they have pretty decent Philips 6' HDMI cables for $5.99. I think the normal price is something like $7.99.
Back in the twincitieshdtv.com days people used to report driving to somewhere in Eden Prairie for sub $5 HDMI cables. Not sure if that company is still around or even the name, maybe someone else does.

We don't have anything cheap in Eden Prairie. We don't even (currently) have a Menards. I have been happy with any of the Philips cables I have purchased over time (have not tried their HDMI though).

I believe it was a internet company with headquarters in EP. They would sell product at their warehouse, I just can't remember the name and I personally never purchased from them.

So why am I getting Speed HD on channel 878? I have so far refused to fork over another few bucks per month for this crappy package of stick and ball channels just to get Speed. Is this just a promotional thing they do to get people hooked in hopes they sign up for it when they eventually yank it?

I didn't really mean to offend anyone as sports is just not my thing, but I am a gear head. My elderly mother in a one-horse town in southern Minnesota was getting Speed at no additional charge from Frontier for crying out loud.

Good luck with your TV. We have a 60" and a 65" from the 2009 models. I wrote the FAQ here (with help from the owners thread, of course) on those.

Look out for geometry issues on those initially, as that's the biggie that is typically wrong with the Mits DLPs OOB. Also, consider a cheap 3rd-party warranty. At that price for the TV, I think you can get a 5 year (1st year manufacturer plus 4 year extended) for around $135. That's much cheaper than what UE or Mits would try to sell you a warranty for. You can also wait a few months before you purchase one.

I bought the adapter separately and two pair of xpand dlp-link glasses for about $300, but then at the time the 3D-kit was going for $399.

Didn't go down for me. Long ago, I switched my DNS provider from Comcast to opendns.com. It's completely free, makes my internet faster and safer, and their website makes it easy for even the technically challenged to change it.

Since the issue was a DNS one, I was able to read all the stories on the local websites about the outage, during the outage.

So that's what it was. Restarted system, modem, router, iPhone to wireless network all to no avail. Sure enough the local comcast service number had a busy signal. Figured there was an area problem. Didn't bother trying the 800 number.

I was pissed. I reported the first signs of the issue yestrday morning around 9:00 am. They denied there was a system problem and said it must be at my end so they scheduled a truck roll. They called me back around 4:00 pm and said they resolved a system "noise" issue. I could acccess sites again more reliably so I had them cancel the truck roll. Then everything went down compeltely around 6:30 PM or so.

I was just thinking the other day that Comcast's internet service has gotten more reliable (which it has) than it used to be...hopefully we won't see a repeat of last night for a long time.

Having alternate DNS services set up on your devices or router is never a bad thing. Comcast's DNS has had issues for me before, and I'm sure it will again.

I highly recommend this tool (http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm) if you're interested in figuring out which alternate DNS servers would give you the best performance.

If you set up alternates, next time Comcast's DNS server goes down, you won't even notice.

This DNS stuff is something new to me. I feel old. Maybe I will go back to reading books.

Not me.

Glad that wasn't just me. It was frustrating as hell. AND...it appears that when I left for work at 8:30am, it still wasn't fully fixed. My service cut in and out.

I added Google's public DNS as a secondary so hopefully I'll keep on working next time.

The Xfinity app is now out for Android phones. Just got to wait for the MyDVR stuff to sync up with my DVR here so I can start using it. :D

Apparently we need the new updated guide before that is available to us in SLP. They couldn't give me an ETA other than early 2011.

That was the date I saw quoted on the TiVo Forums from someone that asked Comcast.

Anybody know if Xfinity (online) has more content than ondemand through my cable box? Looks like it does, have tried searching and I'm coming up dry.

Also --- assuming that's true --- it doesn't look like xfinity is available through the PS3, has anybody hacked it and gotten it to work?

Xfinity/Fancast seems to have a lot more available than On Demand, yes. Even the premium channels have a ton of movies that are streaming only. I have used it some, but I don't like that I have to use Firefox instead of Safari for it (the Move player plugin that they use only runs on 32 bit browsers for the Mac).

There is a national rollout on a a city-by-city, system-by-system basis. It is called Intellistar 2, I believe.

So even if you were able to get the Hulu stuff to stream on your PS3 (I tried on my first gen Apple TV and was only marginally successful) the the non-Hulu content probably wouldn't.

The 24/7 music channel (sadly in standard def) Cool TV has been added on channel 248 on the St. Paul/Anoka system. No idea for the Minneapolis folks.

The new HD channels are on in Shakopee in the 800's range.

I know I really shouldn't complain to much now that Comcast has delivered, but I really wish they added Nat Geo Wild and BBC America to the line-up.

Just wondering which of the HD Set top boxes (non DVR) that Comcast has available is the best - or are they all comparable?

I'm on the St. Paul system (northwest suburbs).

So what is Comcast doing with all the duplicate HD channels? The old HD tier is still active. As much as I love sports I guess I don't really need three ESPN's or 3 NFL Networks. Or, hell two Discovery Channels.

I don't think Comcrap even knows what it is doing with their channel lineup. I went to their web site, put in my address, and up comes a lineup that states it was last updated 12/22/2010. It doesn't show the HD networks in the 400's and it shows nothing at all in the 800's. WTF Comcast? The location does show correctly as Southwest Suburbs, MN. The wife was wondering if OWN is going to be in Digital Starter (it looks as if it will be in Digital Preferred...if what they show can be believed). I was wondering why I am getting Speed HD as I thought it was part of an extra cost package. Same old crappy service...at least some things don't change. I wonder how many years it will take them to run the Xfinity name into the toilet and then have to rebrand themselves yet again.

I think it's channel 7 or 8 analog but I'm not at work now(Burnsville). I'll have to double check tomorrow and post back. I just noticed it last week and thought it was funny since basically nothing(other than Bravo:confused: and locals) are analog anymore, nothing I really care to watch and can't get OTA.

Use another site such as Zap2it. That tends to be more accurate then Comcast's site anyways.

On that note I did get word today of (finally) more HD channels being added to the St. Paul/Anoka system by the end of the month. Nothing 100% official at this point but it sounds like at least HDNet will finally find its way here.

I happened to be in a Motel in Burnsville Saturday, and gave it a glance. Looks like they have some sort of either MDTA or something else (they have HBO on Channel 6, as an example). The local lineup of what used to be available on analog cable matches with what is on this system.

A month after the switch, they were only getting locals up to 23, all the rest were static, so there must have been some delay in the new equipment. TVGN is NOT available on this system, although I suppose for Hotel systems that ARE making it available, having Basic 2 listed on the channel is very helpful (since theoretically they still recieve basic 2 via an MDTA).

And any other hints about which new HD channels we might get this year?

There's the one HD channel that's shared with NBA League Pass and MLS Direct Kick. I'd imagine until SDV is running in this area that we won't see the full fledge league passes in HD.

(Honestly I wouldn't mind NBA League Pass online if it wasn't for the annoying interface and the fact that you can't have a true "full screen" experience)

The Showtime free preview is not active on my TiVo with cable cards. The free preview was to start 6:00 AM this Friday morning.

Anybody with cable cards able to tune in the Showtime channels?

I called Comcast. They said the Showtime preview should be available to those with cable cards. They sent a signal to my cable cards and told me to wait 15 minutes. Still unable to get the Showtime channels after 1 1/2 hours. It doesn't pay to call Comcast because you need someone on the head end to active the channels for cable cards, not some CSR who sends a worthless signal to active the cards.

I called Comcast a second time. The CSR thought the Showtime preview wasn't going to start untill noon and would only be the On Demand channels.

Website says Showtime HD channel should be available. Still don't trust what a CSR says!

Well, we can get some Showtime programs on demand, but the channels are still scrambled. Seems like a bit of a cheat--it's not as easy to sample the channels, and not everything is available on demand. Guess that's comcast for you--not quite good enough.

I am thinking of switching back to Comcast from DirecTV, but I have been told that the picture quality is better with DirecTV than with Comast. Can anyone comment if one service provides a better picture quality than the other? I have not been able to find a thread on this topic lately.

Ouch. Still some work to do there. A lot of nights I'm getting something close to the full NHL schedule in HD on D*, sometimes with both teams feeds in HD.
