Hmmmmmm.

I guess I need to talk to Armstrong. No ABC or FOX in HD?

What about the CW?

If those aren't available in HD or won't be added anytime soon - will Dish Network have all of the major networks (FOX, ABC, CBS, NBC, and CW) in HD?

I get from reading back that Direct TV doesn't offer the locals in HD so it is whatever you can get OTA, correct?

DISH has all 4 major networks in HD. I'm not sure if the CW network here is even broadcasting in HD as I can't get it OTA.

There are rumors that D* is going to get the networks, but so far, no official word.

CW has been broadcasting in HD for quite some time now (I watch smallville). I would almost bet you could pickup ABC and FOX with a small antenna (maybe even set top) from Proctorville. CW is the hardest OTA for me to get (I live in Ashland). Good luck!

Thanks for the info. But if you have trouble in Ashland, then there is no way I am getting it in Teays Valley.

i thought i read on here a while back that they (WQCW) had a tower in charleston? i know when i first setup my antenna (about 3 years ago) i had to turn it towards portsmouth, oh to get the cw. i started picking them up about a year ago pointed in the same direction i use for all the other locals (towards charleston).

WQCW has been planning for a while to move their transmitter to WOWK's tower which should make it possible for people in the center of the market to actually pick it up. They wanted to do it by February 17th but that certainly didn't happen. It looks like the move has been approved but I don't know when we can expect to see it. Probably no sooner than June 12th.

andy4theherd

that would be sweet! i have rarely had any issues picking-up wowk. i assume i would have the same luck with wqcw if/when they move. i read a couple of old articles that indicated they were not allowed to broadcast at full power from portsmouth as their signal was interfering with several other stations in oh and va.

So I talked to Armstrong and they definitely don't carry FOX, ABC, or CW in HD.

So I am going to cut the cable & try satellite for the first time ever.

I have assumed to this point I will be going Dish Network over DirectTV, but if anyone can persuade me otherwise I'd like to hear it.

(main reasons: Dish has more HD channels, Dish carries all 4 major networks in HD, and perceived advantages of NFL Sunday Ticket aren't worth trading # of HDs and locals in HD)

Looks like Dish has a cool DVR that will allow me to record up to 4 HD channels (2 sat and 2 OTA) at once. Not sure if DirecTV can equal that?

Anybody with Dish in this market can give me some pointers on getting all this set up? I am leery of just leaving everything up to Dish's people. I want to know if there are any inside secrets about getting this set up or packages to buy that are most economical or what's the best equipment set up. Any of you guys suggestions or experiences are welcome. Or any references on a authorized installer would be appreciated.

Obviously I want to have at least the one DVR that can record 4 HDs at once. How many other receivers will I need? I have 2 HD TVs and 2 SD TVs.

I am coming from cable and the DTV transition was not an issue - is that still the case with my remaining SD TVs on Dish?

What else will I need?

How much does all this cost? I read somewhere about free installation for new customers - but do I still need to buy all the receivers and dish and stuff, or is that included in "Installation"?

I don't know what is happening currently with WQCW but I can no longer pick them up and I live 15 miles from Portsmouth. I do believe they did begin broadcasting from Huntington/Charleston area some time ago because as "andy4theheard" said, I begin getting them without turning my antenna. Now I can get them but I have to turn the antenna more southerly from WSAZ, WCHS, and even WOWK. Anyone know if they are powering up in a new location but just haven't went full power? Could it be that i've began picking up the Portsmouth tower again and the new Huntington tower isn't ready? Didn't think about that until just now, LOL. So I could tell if I swing my antenna totally around to check.

i'm not sure about the towers. as of 8pm 6/1/09 here are my stations and strengths:

wsaz-100%
wchs-43%
wvah-66%
wowk-51%
wkas-100%
wqcw-39%

as previously stated, when i first setup my antenna (CM 4228) in my atic i had to turn it towards portsmouth, OH to get wqcw. now i am pulling it in pointed towards the WV towers.

I noticed WSAZ started using a full 16:9 HD crawl today to give weather warnings. This will be a huge improvement since they used to have to switch to SD whenever they had to give advisories. I remember several months ago they were preparing the studios to do HD news in the near future. I wonder if they're finally getting equipment for that.

That's good to hear, that was so annoying for WSAZ to switch to SD during a broadcast, especially during the winter months with all the weather and school closing alerts. Wonder when they will be able to broadcast Wheel and Jeopardy in HD.

The HD DVR I have will record two satellite and one OTA at the same time. That box will feed SD to a single coax that is generally strong enough to handle multiple TVs. There are two remotes--one IR and the other operable from other rooms in the house. Each can control its own output. The box will not feed two HD sets so you will need two HD receivers and I believe all Dish's HD boxes are DVR's--might want to check on this as its not something I need. In order to get locals in HD, you will need their newest dish that will get everything or a two dish set. I have the two dish set and it works very well. However, a single physical dish would be better.
The packages you order are entirely dependent on what you want/need in programming. As a first time user, you should get some good incentive deals--especially now. Don't expect the installer to be on time or even show up when scheduled. They aren't very good at this aspect of customer service. However, they have always done a good job for me in the end.
Good luck and let us know your experience.

What may seem a weird question from an out-of-market person, but by any chance is WSAZ still running some sort of nightlight on RF Ch 3 ? On May 26, via Es, I saw a DTV psa on Ch 3 with WV superimposed on it. Today, after hearing KDKA's audio on 59.740 MHz, there again was the bilingual DTV psa on 65.760 MHz. TIA from San Antonio, TX.

Yes, WSAZ is still running analogue nightlight on 3. I had expected it to only run a few weeks after they shut down regular programming on February 16, but it looks like they're going to run it all the way to the new transition date. Very interesting that you're picking it up, especially considering how problematic OTA reception is for people in the market.

What is the deal with wqcw and wpby signals. I had heard pby was lost its tower and is broadcasting at a low level and qcw was moving to the old wowk tower. I did a search on tvfool and antennaweb and they both say I should get these channels easily. What is the status of these stations?

Back around 40 years ago (late 1960's) when I was home from college during the summer that was during a peak in the sunspot cycle, I recall that most days I was getting TX stations on channels 2 and 3 (as I recall one was in Houston and the other San Antonio). The one on channel 3 frequently interfered with reception of WSAZ (perhaps 80 miles southwest of my where my parents lived) but after WSAZ's 1 am (eastern time) signoff (back in those day the Tonight Show run from 11:30 until 1am) the TX station came through fairly clear. I guess the TX to/from WV RF path works out to be very good for 'skip' reception under the right conditions.

KPRC-2 Houston; prob KBTX-3 Bryan or KIII-3 Corpus Christi. San Antonio WOAI-4 and KENS-5. The Es prop mode that you were getting really isn't too much affected by the Solar Cycles. I caught some of the nightlight stations today running DTV psa (WJBK-2, Detroit; WKYC-3 Cleveland) and some others (WBTV 3 Charlotte; WWMT 3 Kalamazoo). Our VHF 2,4,5, and 9 analogs go off at midnight - 12 did this morning (their DT there). KCWX-2 (only on since Aug 2000) becomes a DT-5 in July - 50 mi at 20-kw.

I have noticed WSAZ audio/video breakups on DirecTV as well. However if Suddenlink customers are seeing it, it may be related to the multiple lightning hits they took a couple of weeks ago. I don't think they are back to 100% yet. I noticed this morning they still don't have the temperature displayed on their graphics during the news.

Channel 13(WOWK) is now VHF(for several months now). If your antenna can pick up VHF, then do a rescan of your channels.

My antenna is the Channel Master 4228 UHF, however, it will pick up the high end VHF(WOWK)

I remember somewhere seeing that a person should delete all the local channels, and then do a rescan. Not sure about this. Otherwise, I am at a loss as to why you can't pick it up. Maybe someone else on here will contribute some knowledge. Of course, an outdoor antenna would do better, but if you had been picking it up before........???

It's $44.99 before taxes for Suddenlink's 6MB Internet service and then I think they told me it would be around $40 for the phone service. I currently have these and cable through them. So if I dropped just the cable my bill would only drop about $40 per month...and then I'd be adding DirecTV.

I have Suddenlink for internet, Dish for tv and Vonage for phone. I don't think it's a hassle at all. Also, it's actually cheaper. Suddenlink's VoIP phone service is WAY overpriced. Vonage offers the same thing, but with a few more features, for only $25 a month. They were really the first major VoIP provider so they're very reliable, and they haven't raised their rates a single time since they've been in business. My bills are set to autopay so I've never found it inconvenient that those three things are on separate bills.

Update from my previous post about getting Dish Network

I got dish installed and now have my OTA antenna installed. With the 722k receiver I can record up to 4 HD programs at once (2 OTA and 2 Dish). Thursday night primetime TV just got a lot better.

Channel quality is good, as good as Comcast in Houston was at least. Lots of HDs which is what I wanted. No E! or AMC in HD yet, but I did get some others I didn't have before.

OTA is working, probably need to tweak it some. WSAZ comes in 100%. PBS. FOX, and CBS are all there. No ABC though? :( Good thing I've got the locals on Dish as well...Anybody else have this issue or is ABC just weak in my area (Proctorville, OH)?

Also, my antenna is just inside the house, so I could possibly improve the reception by moving it to the attic. I need to study up on diplexing my signal and figure out where to hook up my coax cable that the Dish installer put in.

Yeah, getting WCHS (ABC) from Proctorville with just a small indoor antenna will be difficult. Their tower is in the same location as WVAH (FOX) though. So aim your antenna to get the strongest FOX signal you can get and that will be your best shot at picking up ABC.

Does anyone know if the CW has powered up their Charleston antenna?

Doesn't look like it. They had planned on doing it as soon as possible after the analogue shutoff, but I haven't seen any sign that they're actually moving forward with construction.

And on another unfortunate note: WSAZ has decided NOT to go through with their plans to increase signal strength. They claim it would be too expensive to modify the current tower to handle the new transmitter. So what we're getting now is what we're going to stuck with.

I was reading about this on line this morning. The newer 722k receivers like the one I got didn't come with a built in OTA tuner, I had to buy one and the Dish installer installed it for me (it was $40 IIRC).

This new OTA module has 2 tuners in it as opposed to the older 722 receiver that only had the one built in OTA tuner. So if you have the 722k with the optional OTA module installed like mine, you can record up to 4 HDs at once (2 Sat and 2 OTA), with the older 722 you can record 3 HDs at once (2 sat and 1 OTA). I don't think I'll run into too many nights where I'll use all 4, maybe Thursdays when primetime shows are on all the networks and theres a good College football game (fall) or basketball (spring) on ESPN or something.

I need to rescan tonight to see if I can get ABC - I get fox just fine....

Yeah, getting WCHS (ABC) from Proctorville with just a small indoor antenna will be difficult. Their tower is in the same location as WVAH (FOX) though.

Actually it is the same tower. But for some reason that defies logic, WVAH DT-19, which is a lower frequency is at the top of the tower and WCHS which is at DT-41 is lower on the tower. As a result, WCHS does not have the range that WVAH does.

To answer my own question, I got the following email explanation from Jack Wells at WV Pub Broadcasting:

We have been and continue to broadcast digital on ch 34. It has an ID of
33-1,33-2,33-3 due to the FCC mandating that we id the digital with our old analog number. We are currently at reduced coverage do to a problem with our Broadcast antenna at Barkers ridge. In the interim, while we effect repairs to our antenna, we are broadcasting from WOWK's tower at reduced coverage. If you point your antenna towards WOWK's tower you might be able to receive 34. If not we should be back to normal in a few months.

it depends on your LOS (line of site) and equipment. i live in ashland and get wsaz (nbc), wowk (cbs), wvah (fox), wchs (abc), wkas (ky pbs), and wqcw (CW). i have a CM 4228 in my attic with an amp. there is a hill directly by my house that has trees that i am pointing to so my signals range from 50 to 80 for cbs, fox, abc, and cw. if you are up high (elevation) you should be able to pull them in.

For us DirecTV subscribers....

I believe I have read that our local stations' carriage, except WOWK, are covered under corporate contracts with DirecTV.

I wonder what the odds of us getting WOWK and a PBS stations are come September?

Didn't PBS sign some kind of national contract with DirecTV or did I dream that?

Probably not unless they either a) increase power to get their OTA signal to Teays Valley (I can see the LRF tower from my neighborhood, so if I can't get signal, neither can they and right now I can't get signal) or b) be willing to pay for a fiber feed to the LRF.

I am looking for someone to apply the epoxy floor and install cabinets and other items to organize my garage. It will be interesting to see which locals they bring up in HD on Sept. 9th. In most markets they now offer the 4 major commercial broadcast networks NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox. In some, but certainly not all, markets they also offer CW and in a very few markets also PBS or a local independent station. My guess is just the 4 majors for the Charleston/Huntington DMA.

Hi Guys,

I just moved from from California and now attending University of Charleston. I picked up a KWorld SA290-Q DVI edition to attach to my Samsung 22" LCD. Plugging everything in, I pick up CBS, NBC, FOX, PBS, and a couple other scraggling channels. However, plugging in an old Daewoo television set to see if it gets more channels, but it gets a multitude of other channels including CNN, USA, ESPN, Discovery, History, etc. Now I'm utterly stumped. I've tried contacting the manufacturer to no avail (based in Taiwan) and am thinking of returning the product to Newegg.

I've fiddled around with the autotune settings (STD/IRC/HRC) and noticed they all find the same channels, but still none of the fun channels (ESPN, Discovery, USA, etc.)

So the question is, I know that my room gets those channels, but is my ATSC tuner broken as these are only QAM channels?

Any help will be great, thanks!

hjhoang
08-23-09, 12:23 PM
Actually, now I have suspicion that the cable company is broadcasting ESPN, Discovery, and all those channels via the old NTSC since it was only NTSC OTA that was mandated to cease, and not cable companies.

Can anyone confirm this before I return the SA290 for a doubled priced AVerMedia TVBox 11 w/ ATSC/QAM/NTSC Tuner?

As of Sept. 9th (if Direct TV comes through on its promise) there will be no reason whatsoever to keep Suddenlink. That is the day I pull the plug on Suddenlink. I have suffered for years with this crappie service and company. The only thing they had they with any value were the locals in HD. I could never satisfactorily get the locals OTA. As I type this, the lower channels are fuzzy and the sound is tinny. So goodbye Suddenlink and good riddence. :)

Suddenlink Help when will more HD channels be added to the Charleston system and will Discovery HD be among them?

They have not added anything here in 19 months and I am getting frustrated with them.

We no longer have anything on channel 40, G4 was moved to the digital family tier, they switched WE to the digital family tier with Lifetime Movie Channel, and last month we did get a new channel Fox Business Channel it is in the digital family tier. With channel 40 open I donn't know why they didn't just move The Weather Channel there and put the Fox Business Channel on 39 next to Fox News.

After the last addition in Feb. 2008 other areas got 4 more HD channels June through August then 3 more around November and then around June 2 more were added.

That first group was:
USA, SciFi (now SYFY), FX, and Travel (Chiller non HD was added)

The second group was:
Discovery, TLC, and Animal Planet

The third group was:
Bravo, and CNBC

Other areas have Universal HD as well.

We do not have our CW in HD either, I would like to finally see Smallville in HD since they moved it to Friday its probably the last season.

I probably would have been happy if they had just given us the first group as I watch USA a lot and SyFy probably the most.

Nothing being added in 19 months is rediculous. I would switch but a dish is really possible where I live. I have family in DC and they have Verizon, outside of regional sports and locals they have 69 non premium HD channels and 43 premium. I wish we had them here I would switch in a minute.

I have called multiple times over the past year and I always get the same answer well there isn't enough space and were are working to make more room. Thats a fine answer for 6 months to a year but 19 months that doesn't seam like your doing anything. They seem to advertise enough about how great suddenlink is, but in those past 19 months they have added 1 channel moved 1 channel to a digital tier from expanded basic and switched a channel on expanded basic with one from the digital tier.

My cable bill with the same services has gone from 82.56 to 93.45 in that time, $1.49 is the broadcast station surcharge which we still don't have CW in HD and the rest has gone up $9.40.

So for $10.89 (13.2% increase) more the only thing more that I am getting is The Fox Business Channel.

At the rate of about 4 or 5 new HD channels during each of the past two years, seems to me it would take Suddenlink about 25 more years to catch up with Dish or DirecTV. At my age, I don't think I can wait that long. As I said a few days ago on this forum, on Sept 9th my Suddenlink service will be disconnected--two locations--Charleston and Beckley. This Suddenlink scam of increasing rates, and trickling out "new" HD channels one at a time is what happens when a company is given an exclusive franchise and monopoly without strong regulatory oversight. Seems to me that the party is about over. How much money has Suddenlink sunk into phone service to the neglect of their basic core business? Give me break!

Division 1? You mean 1-AA, which of course is not the same high calibar college teams that we see today in the BCS. 2 Finalists? Wow, in my statement I said winners. Not 2nd and 3rd. Almost doesn't count, a Win is a Win and a Loss is a Loss, it doesn't go in on the records as almost winning. And should have gone and gone are two different things.

And by the way, the movie is about a tragic plane crash that took the lives of student athletes, not about how "Great" Marshall was at football. If that was the case, you wouldn't see Marshall making a movie any time soon.

This hurts so bad, and during football season nonetheless. First we get a Buckeye who thinks he's on a ESPN forum and now we get a 15 day push back from DirecTV. I suppose I will believe it when I see it. Another 15 days with Suddenlink--how painful! But hey, we have waited this long, I can and will wait another 15 days.

Well lets see, if you go back to my original post, you will see it was all about the HD local channels, I am not the one who brought it up about bashing each others school, someone started it, I finished it. If you are going to have a pissing match about sports, do know what your talking about.

I will be interested in hearing details about those who switch from Suddenlink to DirectTV when the HD locals are added. I'm on Suddenlink for HD cable and internet, and not ready to consider pulling the trigger for D*, so want to hear everyone's experience, costs, and service quality.

Bad News!

Looks like we got bumped to the 23rd. :(

http://www.dbstalk.com/showpost.php?p=2202442&postcount=32

Satelliteracer is as credible as they get.

I exchanged messages with Satellitracer and he pointed out that the D* web site has only indicated Sept. 09 (meaning 2009), but some web sites (two of which I had seen) had incorrectly reported this as Sept. 9th. He indicated that Sept. 23th is not really a delay from the original plan.

Yesterday, I said that I was going to leave this forum while that Buckeye dude remained here bashing our state. I slept on that and realized that's silly. This is a great forum with some great folks posting.

Sorry to hear about the DirecTV not providing Locals until the 23rd. But, we've been thinking they were coming for about 3 years now, so what's another 20 days?

Hey Tony, glad you're staying on board. I put my mother on Dish when the locals first came to Dish and again when they added local HD sometime ago. Picture is great. I just couldn't make myself switch from Directv to Dish--mainly because of the sport packages. Like Herdfan, I have Directv and Suddenlink and I want to drop Suddenlink soooooo badly. The explanation about 09 getting confused with Sep 23 makes sense and Satellitracer is always correct. We will wait it out and then drop the cable.

On another note, go WVU and Marshall!!! I will root for the Buckeyes over Michigan, but that's it. PS--why are folks from Ohio on this Charleston, WV HDTV Forum anyway? Don't they have TV stations in Ohio? I'm just saying...

...why someone from Ohio like me would be on this thread:

1. I try to pay attention to all markets serving any part of Ohio, and Huntington/Charleston certainly does that!

2. I have relatives who live in Charleston, as well as a wife who's a native Mountaineer!

Good or bad, strong or weak -- those ARE the reasons. And yeah, we've got a couple or three TV stations in Ohio...:D (But you weren't talking about me, I know -- it's the other Ohio State fan who went off on a sports tangent here!)

This does work, and I have the WSAZ and WCHS digital feeds saved in my quicklist. Thing is though...while WCHS seems to be passing HD through this test feed, WSAZ is, from what I can tell, only passing an SD digital feed. I would assume this would change at the official launch, but it doesn't bode well for seeing the game in HD tonight.

That is what I thought as well as it had letterboxed sides, but flipping to 3-1 it had the same picture. I just wonder if something else is wrong over there.

We should be able to get CBS and FOX Saturday morning. CBS off the tennis and FOX off the baseball GOW.

I know most of you may not be interested, but this weekend, the pitiful little Oak Hill station, WOAK was added to the HD stations on Suddenlink in the Beckley area. Since a lot of the college football games are on ABC, not having any HD in the Beckley area for Saturdays was a real drag. WOAK always preempted the WCHS feed on Suddenlink for football and other sports. All the other networks had been HD in Beckley for a long time, but not ABC. I was able to watch both the Virginia Tech / Nebraska game and the WVU / Auburn game in HD this weekend. Since D* is suppose to add local HD for Beckley at the same time it adds Charleston/Huntington, I think this is a good sign. WOAY is getting with the program, and hopefully will be picked up by D* in HD when the locals are activated.

No. WOWK has never broadcast 5.1. WSAZ always used to until the beginning of the summer when they got the new equipment that lets them do HD graphics. They haven't broadcast anything in 5.1 since. I always thought they'd get it working again eventually but it's been almost 4 months now. It's probably worth bugging them about it.

As for WOWK, I suspect they're either too cheap to update their equipment or they just don't care.

Because the sports programming genuises there are too cheap to move the lame MU-WVU hour long coal commercial pregame show to the 11o'clock slot to allow the dual Heisman candidate/Nat'l Championship implications game to be aired. (Their program directors stink!) I guess they did not want to lose any infomercial money to slip the pregame show to 11AM. I wish they'd broadcast OTA 8.2 again to show what the official ABC Sports Map shows they are suppposed to broadcast gamewise. They pulled the same crap last year but showed a stinking couple distant unranked Big East teams game of the 'weak' matchup instead.

Also, You'd think the Governor could get the MU-WVU game broadcast in HD! Maybe they could use stimulus money and present it in "Robert C. Byrd High Definition" ;-)

Now we need to get Suddenlink to expand its HD lineup to include channels it has in other areas such as Discovery, USA and Universal.

We currently only have 16 of the 39 national HD Channels Suddenlink offers.

We are suppose to get New HD channels in mid February, it was in the Daily Mail a couple of weeks ago in an article about faster internet, Suddenlink spokesman Michael Kelemen said Suddenlink also will add new high-definition television channels to the Suddenlink HD lineup in mid-February, including Discovery HD, Disney HD, TLC HD and FX HD..

After 2 years they better add more than those 4, like USA and SyFy and CW I would finally like to see Smallville in HD before its cancelled. I want Universal but I doubt we will get it, we used to have every HD Channel Suddenlink offered except Universal and they didn't add the previous additions.

We have:
PBS
ABC
CBS
FOX
NBC

A&E
ESPN
ESPN2
FOOD
HGTV
History
HDNet
HDNet Movies
HD Theater
Nat Geo
Paladia
TBS
TNT

Cinemax
HBO
Showtime
Starz

We will get at least these:

Discovery
Disney
FX
TLC

Suddenlink Offers in other areas but we don't have:

CW
MY Network TV (MYZ for us)

A Regional Sports Network (varies by location)

ABC Family
Animal Planet
Bravo
Cartoon Network
CMT
CNBC
CNN
Comedy Central
Lifetime
MGM HD
MTV

Thanks for the info SGRSBSKIER. Have been wanting Discovery HD as long as it has existed. HD Theater used to be a wonderful channel until it went to mainly showing motor sports. Would love to hav USA and Universal for the Olympics and Syfy as well. Neither Dish or Direct TV is an option for me as a mountain blocks their signal so must use Suddenlink for HD service.

I forgot about the olympics. I would have said if we were to get more than those 4 channels, Bravo, CNBC, Universal HD, USA would have the best chance to be added, but I would have thought it would have been mentioned in the article as it would have made for a good announcement and could have persuaded more people to upgrade to their HD service.

Even though Bravo and CNBC have olympic coverage I would prefer something else as I wouldn't watch them pass the olympics.

I finally got fed up with the lack of additional HD channels from Suddenlink. I will be ordering DirectTV soon. Can someone provide me with instructions on how to go about getting the best prices from DirectTV?

I have 4 HD TVs and I want 2 of the boxes to be DVRs. Anyone know roughly how much this will cost me a month?

Thanks for any input!!

In mid-February, Suddenlink is planning to add several HD channels to its current HD lineup in your area. The new HD channels should include Discovery HD, Disney HD, TLC HD and FX HD. More are expected later this year and/or next.

Across the company's largest cable systems -- which includes your area -- Suddenlink is deploying technology that will soon give it the capability for approx. 200 HD channels, part of a larger, in-progress investment plan of more than $300M.

And yes, I'm with Suddenlink (http://www.suddenlink.com/about/executives/abel/).

Is WOWK HD not transmitting Network HD Programs any longer ?
I am not a regular Major Network Programming Viewer, so don't know how long that this may have been occurring, but tonight 2-24-10 the David Letterman and Craig Fergerson Shows are not in Wide Screen, Crystal Clear HD, which I have gotten spoiled watching HD for a few years from several sources. Off-Air and DirecTV are each seeing this same issue exclusive to WOWK, as other Local Stations are still providing the nice HD programming, and WSAZ HD Winter Olympics Looks amazing! So has anybody seen this WOWK issue? Sad enough that WOWK has never, and maybe just will not ever provide 5.1 Audio, but now not even provide Network HD Programming on their Digital Transmission either?:(

Thanks for any feedback.

I didn't watch late nite shows but CSI NY earlier in the evening was in HD. When WOWK runs their crawler messages they turn-off the HD transmission and sometimes forget to turn it back on after the crawler finishes. I've had to call the station and wake them up to turn HD back on. They are absolutely the worst station for HD in the valley and it is too bad that they have many of the top network shows because they are affiliated with CBS. Bill Galloway is the station engineer if you need a name.

Anyone else having problems (audio, USA particularly) with Suddenlink's HD on Demand?

Since we don't have USA or SyFy in HD I have been watching their original shows on Demand, so far SyFy has no problems, but since the shows added from 2 weeks ago the USA HD on Demand causes my Speakers to pop everytime I start it or when it ends and anytime I pause fast forward or rewind. Its so loud I think it might break the speakers it actually caused my reciever to turn itself off. The popping is very loud at low volumes to. The sound wasn't right either it was much lower than it used to be.

This was a problem (may still be) on the Discovery Channal section on 996 as well but I just Stopped using that, but I only think it did it when using a reciever the TV speakers were fine.

From what I can tell, this is the forum closest to my Greenup County KY area. I just got my first HDTV (late to the party, I know) so 'yay', but it seems to be causing me some problems so 'boo'.
I am 26 miles from WSAZ, 26½ miles from WOWK, and 43 miles from WVAH (no WCHS?).
I am at an elevation of 700 feet.
I have an indoor TERK antennae which only gets me WSAZ and WKAS.
Is there a recommended OTA HD antennae that will do better by me?

I do have DirecTv on my SD sets (which are all Tivo'd), but it's sitting at $150 a month now and I can't bring myself to go any higher. I have considered getting rid of my premium channels to pay for the HD, and doing Amazon on Demand for movies, or calling cable and seeing what they can do for me on a bundle. But Armstrong Cable limits you to three TV's? Yikes.
It's all very confusing, especially since I am trying to cut costs as well as get at least local channel HD.

Just wondering what other folks in this region are doing. I do not really want a large antennae on top of my house, but if it could be on the back (which thankfully faces ESE) I would do it.
Thanks for any thoughts.

First thing is to go to tvfool.com. Use the "start maps" option to eventually drop the receive point marker over your location (you can zoom in and drag the pointer on the map.) Adjust the antenna height to what you think you will use, then click on the "make radar plot" button to get the results. Post the URL it says to use here and we can check out your situation in detail.

I can guarantee that you will need at least an attic installation if not an outdoor antenna.

Since WOWK is transmitting on ch. 13, you need a high-VHF/UHF antenna. Two models that should work are a Winegard HD7695P or an AntennaCraft HBU-33. Aim it at 91 degrees mounted at least 10 feet above ground (that's what you ran on your report - higher would be better). If you have problems with dropouts, then get a preamp to overcome cable loss. Good luck!

BTW, WCHS transmits from the same location as WVAH.

Received a flyer from Suddenlink saying they will be adding 26 new HD channels in June. This includes the four they added in february. They also say that to receive channels above 22 customers will need a digital adapter if their sets do not have a QAM tuner. This will free up a lot of bandwidth since 8 SD or 2 HD channels can occupy the same space as 1 analog channel without compression. This seems to be the same approach that Comcast is taking, hopefully the picture quality will not suffer. The newe additions will satisfy a wide audience and include the following:
WQCW HD
Lifetime HD
CNN HD
CNBC HD
MSNBC HD
Fox News Channel HD
Travel Channel HD
USA HD
Cartoon Network HD
Nickelodeon HD
Animal Planet HD
CMT HD
VH1 HD

I am glad we finally got CW in HD but all the new episodes are over in about a month so I won't be watching it until the fall season but I finally get to watch new episodes of Smallville in HD.

I wish Disney XD was one of the channels though.

But getting converter boxes for the other TVs, 2 in bedrooms and 4 in other rooms and bedrooms that are rarely used. Thats going to cost a lot unless Suddenlink offers them for free. If not there better be boxes that we can buy. I dont want to spend $5 a month per tv (6 TV's for 1 year = $360 a year)

In Kingwood TX they are doing about the same thing: here is in excerpt: Customers who determine they need DigitaLinks can obtain them in one of several ways: by visiting imagine.suddenlink.com and entering a zip code and account number; by calling toll-free ; or by visiting the company’s local store during normal office hours.

The company will provide DigitaLink devices for all customer TV sets that require them. There is no up-front fee or monthly charge, and customers who do not wish to install these devices on their own can schedule professional installation through Suddenlink. Importantly, Suddenlink will instruct all Kingwood customers to not install these devices until April 27. http://www.kingwoodnow.com/kingwood_business/1156.html

Then there will be 3 phases for that area week after week neighborhood by neighborhood.

I wonder if it will be the same for us but its good to know that they will provide converters for free.

Found this:

The boxes will be free and they are doing it by areas so some will get it before others. In Cross Lanes I haven't recieved that flyer yet about the new HD channels and digital transition, and they say they will notify us multiple times before the transition happens.

Here is what our new channel lineup will look like:
https://imagine.suddenlink.com/Channel%20Lineups/Charleston%20Channel%20Lineup.jpg

They move most things around, but it looks like every channel that was under 100, there HD channel is now in the 200's with the same 2 digits (ESPN HD channel 226) but the locals are in the 100's (WSAZ NBC HD channel 104), The HD plus tier takes up the 200's where the locals would have gone (currently span channels 201-206).

Here's a quick break down:

1: VOD
2-22,97,99: Basic
23-78: Epanded Basic now requires digital tuner or free DigitaLink converter box from Suddenlink
100's: HD Broadcast
200's: All HD channels except Broadcast and Premium Movie
300's: Digital Family & Info Tier
400's: Only has DVR playback on 499
500's: Digital Sports Tier
600's: Digital Movie Tier, and HBO and Cinemax Premium with thier HD
700"s: Showtime Premium and Starz Premium with their HD (Encore is in 600's also part of movie teir)
800's: Par Per View
900's: Digital Music, TV caller ID

After this update we will have 48 HD Channels (6 are Local). They offer 55 national HD channels and we will have 42 of them.

With what wyllie1 said that each analog channel has the space for 8 SD channels or 2 HD channels we got rid of 54 analog and will have used 7 analog for the 54 SD channels (with enough for 2 more on those 7 channels, Chiller is available in some areas but still won't be on ours) and 11 analog for the 22 new HD channels. We still have the space of 36 analog channels. Up to 72 HD channels.

For National Channels:
There are 3 channels in Basic that have HD (WGN America, QVC, HSN).
There are 20 Expanded Basic channels that have HD. 6 of them don't have HD yet (SoapNet, INSP, GSN, MTV2, Oxygen, and TV Land).

So there are 62 channels we have that have HD Feeds that we don't get.
44 Non Premium, 1 Regional (FSN Pittsburgh) and 17 Premium.
There are 24 HD channels in our Basic and Expanded Basic packages.
There are 21 channels in the Digital Family and Info Tier, Sports Tier, and Movie Tier.
There are 17 channels that are Premium Movie channels that have HD.

There are 2 locals that could be HD: WLPX-ION (Apparentley Time Warner will have it around May 11 in Ashland and Ironton) and MyZ (probably will never happen as it is currently broadcasted by WSAZ on the same channel channel as NBC, 3)

(Side note: why doesn't Suddenlink carry the ION sub channels?)

There are 38 channels we don't get that have HD feeds 8 of them are premium.
There are also 7 Subscription Sports Packages in HD.

Making the Basic Package digital would free up 23 analog channels.

Suddenlink says their digital rollout will be complete by 2012 for their subscribers nationwide and cover 97% subscribers (missing about 37,000) and HD Capacity will average 90 HD Channels.

So after this update we will only get about 42 more by 2012. I hope they then leave off channels like QVC and HSN.

I was watching the PGA golf match on WOWK (CBS) HD on Sunday on Suddenlink channel 782. As more often than not, WOWK runs a crawler message this time about the flooding rains in KY and Ohio. This switch to crawler message action changes the transmission from HD to SD. After the crawler finishes, WOWK didn't switch the transmission back to HD (not unusual for them to leave in SD for an extended period of time), and then I see an SD picture with three white blobs on the left edge of the picture frame going from the bottom left to about the middle of the left edge. These white blobs remain stationary while the SD picture plays. I was concerned about burning my plasma screen with these three stationary white blobs, so I turned off the broadcast and emailed WOWK about my concern.

I am wondering if this phenomenon is only seen on Suddenlink, or do OTA and dish subscribers experience the same problem?

Does anyone know the technology that's being implemented in the DigitalLink converter boxes for channels 23 to 98? If it's unencrypted QAM then that would be great because I can still use my own tuners. If it's encrypted then that will eliminate the only reason I'm still subscribing to Suddenstink's service. The tuners in my DVR can tune unencrypted QAM signals but if I have to hook up the IR blaster to control external tuner boxes then those boxes are going to be hooked to a Dish. Why encrypt the digital signals, anyway? The NTSC signals they're using on those channels currently aren't encrypted.

Given that you already have satellite, why not look at DirecTV? Just yesterday they rolled out their Multi-room DVR. Watch something recorded in the living room in the bedroom.

Personally, I am very happy with Suddenlink....so I think it is a good option. I couldn't live without my DVR.

Suddenlinks DVR is kinda small, you can only record 20 hours of HD or 90 hours SD (160 GB), which for me is barely enough right now. I was gone for 8 days had the DVR empty and I had to record things in non HD about 4 hours because it wouldn't fit. It won't be enough space when we get all those new HD channels.

We have Explorer boxes from Scientific Atlanta (now Cisco). We currently have the 8300 series. Cisco now offers an 8600 series. The 8642HDC has the 160 GB Hard Drive with options of a 320 GB or 500 GB.

It would be nice if it was 750 GB as everything is moving to HD, it would give 93 hours of HD, I don't think I ever used the 90 hours of SD.

But with the current DVR only having space for 20 hours of HD, how can I ever record something like a marathon of a show on USA or SyFy in HD.

You would be surprised. 750G on DirecTV gives you about 160 hours of HD. I have 2 1.5G and 1 1.0G drive and they all stay on the full side of 50%. My 750 stayed at 90% until I copied it over to a 1.5G and it stays at about 60%.

Different compression schemes. DirecTV has gone to all MPEG-4 for HD. If you remove the reserved portion of the drive reserved by DirecTV of 140G, you end up using around 3.6G per hour.

Unless I'm reading the above article wrong (couldn't actually post the link as a new user), it looks like we won't be getting updates tomorrow and probably not until after July. I found it curious that I never received any fliers or calls about the transition. Now they say they can't make the transition because enough people don't know about it...probably because they didn't inform them to begin with. Instead of calling me at least once a month to try and get me to sign up for phone service, despite being told every time I only have a cell and will never get their phone service, they could have used that time and manpower to inform people of this transition so it could happen on time.

I love how they turn them not making the transition and adding our new channels as scheduled into PR about how much money they are spending to make things better. Things will be better when we get a decent HD selection!

I called Suddenlink yesterday evening and was told that the [converter for old TVs] rollout for Charleston would be December, which contradicted the info in this morning's paper.

I'm so tired of this ~ Directv & Dish trump Suddenlink badly ~ why should we pay SO MUCH for SO LITTLE.

I don't understand why so many of you who seem to care about HD stay with Suddenlink. I get that for a while they had HD Locals and Sat didn't.

Oh trust me I'm done! For the longest time I couldn't do SAT, but now I can! :-)

Suddenlink should pick a date for the transition, advertise it heavily and stick to it. To let old ladies who can't find their teeth in the morning and a school board who could not decide how to get out of a wet paper bag hold up the transition is absurd. Those of us who were ready are being denied by those who wallow in mediocrity! I doubt we will see any additional HD channels until September or October.

Too little too late, again. I refer to my post of several months ago. Glad I dropped Suddenlink. By the way, the Suddenlink truck is sitting on my street--reportedly, the internet is out. Glad I have DSL. Glad I don't have the Suddenlink phone service either.
