SGRSBSKIER 06-17-10, 01:04 AM I called Suddenlink because I am getting blocking on channel 61 (SyFy). They scheduled a service call because they think it may be a signal strength problem, I just had the digital boxes installed and everything was fine then. I checked them without the boxes and it had the same problem.
On the digital converter boxes the color gets brighter of and on all my channels, deal with that later.
So I asked when the transition will take place. I live in Cross Lanes so she was looking and she listed off a few areas (Reading aloud) Charleston, South Charleston, South Hills, Dunbar, and Siant Albans. Then asked my County which is Kanawha, looked some more and told me it would be July 14, and other Kanawha County is To Be Determined. Now I don't know if she finally found Cross Lanes or that is the date for the others she was reading aloud or both, but she said they would be calling people to inform them about the change. Don't know why they didn't do that earlier. As the original date she told was suppose to be June 9.
If you have recordings Scheduled on the current HD Channels on your DVR you will have to change them when the switch happens because the Channel numbers will change, unless its under channel 99 as they are the only ones to stay the same. Hope no ones going on vacation during the time they do actually change you might miss everything you scheduled to record.
In that Daily Mail article there was one good piece of info they do plan on adding more HD Channels before the end of the year after this soon change.
SGRSBSKIER 07-08-10, 11:01 PM I called and asked them again when the digital transition would happen. The guy told me for the St. Albans area which includes Cross Lanes won't happen until November or December.
I just received a second notice about the switch in the mail. I will probably call again some time next week to see if they tell me something different as 3 weeks ago I was told 7/14.
That press release that said it wasn't going to happen in June said we will get more HD channels after the ones we get when the transition happens by the end of the year. If the transition is not going to happen until November or December I guess we will get more at once.
I was looking forward to these new HD channels mostly SyFy and USA as their summer shows had started and we would have been able to watch them all in HD if it happened on the original date, now if it takes that long they will be over. I was even looking forward to CW with it being Smallville's last year but now it looks like the whole first half of the season will be over before we get it in HD.
It shouldn't be taking this long.
Talked to a guy I know that works for Suddenlink. He said that October or November is when Suddenlinkis planning to do the transition, however he thinks it will take longer, and apparently the only reason is they have to make sure everybody has those digilinks boxes, and it didn't go to well with the area that actually got updated Elkview (i think), it was only about 5,000 customers in that area and they were getting a lot of calls about their TV's not working. I have gotten at least 2 things in the mail about it (got the first one just after I got the boxes) and Suddenlink has been running ads about it for at least a month. There is no reason that after 2 months of commercials and mail reminders that people shouldn't know about it and Suddenlink should just switch it. If people didn't do anything about it its their own fault they had been warned.
Herdfanwv 07-10-10, 01:27 PM Saw in Friday's (7/9/10) edition of the Daily Mail that Suddenlink will begin distributing Tivo Premiere as its DVR. No indication as to whether there will be an automatic swap for those of us with the Scientific Atlanta DVR. I couldn't find the article in the online edition of the Daily Mail, but did find the following release:
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/suddenlink-tivo-announce-strategic-distribution-agreement-2010-07-08?reflink=MW_news_stmp
SGRSBSKIER 07-12-10, 04:52 AM I hope they offer the 1 TB hard drive. That would provide 156 hours of HD recording, the 320 GB only has 46 hours of HD recordings and I would fill that up, the only reason I don't fill the current DVR is many of the shows I record we don't have the HD channel yet.

You don't really think Suddenlink would go for the "top of line" do you?
Herdfanwv 07-13-10, 10:29 PM My dad was at Suddenlink in the Town Center on Monday. He was told that the new HD channels would not be available until October.
loyalwvu 07-14-10, 12:50 PM My dad was at Suddenlink in the Town Center on Monday. He was told that the new HD channels would not be available until October.
It is hard to believe that the only reason for not doing this earlier is because users aren't prepared for it with equipment upgrades. Throw the switch! Users will quickly get the new equipment. As SGRSBSKIER wrote, if they haven't done it my now, they won't do it before October or November, or whenever.
SGRSBSKIER 07-17-10, 06:25 PM Just called Suddenlink about missing the 7/15 update to the Anime Free section of VOD channel 996. They can't help.
In the recording it said if you are calling from the Charleston area on July 20 they are switching to the digital line-up. The person said it would be about 5,000 customers and Cross Lanes isn't one of them and probably won't be for at least a month because they will wait to see how many of the people that had the transition weren't prepared and need boxes.
wyllie1 07-17-10, 07:03 PM When they throw the switch for my area I will be ready. I live in Kanawha City and we'll see if anything happens on the 20th.
wyllie1 07-20-10, 11:07 AM No new channels in my area today. I will just have to wait until Suddenlink decides to make the transition in Kanawha City. It will be a long wait until October or November.
SGRSBSKIER 07-20-10, 03:30 PM The guy I know at Suddenlink didn't even know about it until I told him. No new channels in Cross Lanes either. I wonder what part of Charleston was switched.
The Charleston System has 70k+ subscribers and they are now at 10k (5k in June and now 5k this month). I belive the Charleston system would include everyone that has the channels 2-79,97, and 99 and the digitals starting at 100 with the 26 available HD channels (Broadcast, Premium, Plus, and Basic), I doubt Sissonville is included as they have a different channel line-up and no HD. They did say Kanawha county would be switched first, which Teays Valley, Milton and Wayne are in Putnam but are included on the imagine.suddenlink.com website with Saint Albans, Nitro, and Cross Lanes. Dunbar, South Charleston, and Kanawha City and the already switched Elkview is the Charleston line-up. So I guess I probably have to wait for Charleston, South Charleston, and Dunbar before I have a chance to be switched.
At the rate of 5k a month it will be another year before all of them are switched. Maybe this switch will go better and they will increase the number of subscribers the next time.
Herdfanwv 07-20-10, 05:50 PM A friend of my Dad's lives in South Hills in Charleston, and received a letter from Suddenlink saying that he would get the new channels on either the 21st or 22nd. (I can't remember which day.) I'll keep you guys posted.

Suddenlink threw the switch. Major changes to the channel line-up and new HD stations yesterday in the Smith Road area of Charleston. I didn't have time last night to fully explore the line-up or the changes, and the storms made most stations spudder and freeze, but some upgrade switch was thrown.
wyllie1 07-24-10, 02:44 PM A co-worker of mine said Friday that the new channels had shown up on his box but he was unable to access them. He lives on west Washington St. Perhaps this indicates a speedup in the transition. Still no sign of the new channels in Kan. City as of Saturday afternoon. Late Saturday I did receive a letter from Suddenlink concerning changes to our lineup but no date was given as to when these changes would take place.

I live in this area, but I have not received the upgrade.
sjividen 07-24-10, 09:24 PM I happened to run into A Suddenlink tech who was out in the field. I asked when the new HD channels would arrive and he said that they were being activated on a node-by-node basis. Supposedly, whenever a node hits 80% adoption of digital, they will activate the new channels.
Who knows if he actually knew what he was talking about.
loyalwvu 07-27-10, 09:15 PM How large is a "node?"
SGRSBSKIER 08-04-10, 07:44 PM Just called and asked them about the TIVO boxes if they would be available later this year, they didn't know anything about it.
They also now have a new section on the recorded phone answer specifically for the digital transition I believe you press number 9 on the phone. So I asked when Cross Lanes would be switched and they told me November 9.
I wish it was earlier thats about when the CW starts to air repeats so we only get half the season for HD, at least the shows on SyFy and USA are in HD on the On Demand Channel when its added right, they miss a show here and there, like last weeks Burn Notice isn't there.
Herdfanwv 08-04-10, 09:37 PM I just got a notice in the mail, stating that my transition date is September 28. I'm on the west side hill of Charleston.
loyalwvu 08-19-10, 08:04 PM I now have 45 HD channels on Suddenlink. They are all active and in the 200 series of channels.
Herdfanwv 08-19-10, 09:55 PM ^^^^
What part of town do you live in? Was that just activated today?
I am still waiting in Fort Hill.
netrellis 08-23-10, 03:13 PM Still nothing on Bridge Rd (Turley area)
Hopefully we hear more about this over the next couple of days and hope that the HD channel will be added with the upgrade.

Suddenlink to Offer NFL Network, NFL RedZone
Suddenlink will offer NFL Network and NFL RedZone as part of the agreement that NFL Network reached with the National Cable Television Cooperative, of which Suddenlink is a member.
Suddenlink has already started to launch these channels in certain areas and expects substantially all of the launches to be completed by or well before the first Sunday of the NFL regular season, Sept. 12.
SGRSBSKIER 08-24-10, 03:28 PM It would have been nice if they offered it durring the preseason.
Suddenlink has a new website, doesn't work. Can't find my channel linup there are no channels on the list.
Now you need an actual street adress to get your channel linup, can't just put in a zip code anymore, so can't find out any other areas line-ups unless you know an actual adress.
enzytebob 08-30-10, 02:42 PM For anybody interested, WSYX is coming in loud and clear on UHF Channel 48 as of about noon today. VHF 13.2 is carrying a blank message telling people to re-scan.
The geek in me wonders if fringe reception of WOWK will improve once WSYX VHF 13 goes dark.
loyalwvu 08-30-10, 08:51 PM ^^^^
What part of town do you live in? Was that just activated today?
No. The Suddenlink HD channels have been on for at least 10 days before I made the post on August 20th. I just got around to counting the stations. I live just off Smith Rd in Charleston, at Hunter's Ridge.
hdfanwvu 08-31-10, 08:20 PM I live just off of Smith Road and still no new channels. The updates are very sporadic.
SGRSBSKIER 09-01-10, 02:34 AM Suddenlink has changed their VOD set up. There are now many stations that do the same as the couple.
Instead of 996 having all channels A-Z there are separate channels (in the 1000's) for A-C etc. and they don't even have all of them you have to go to another to find the IFC Free Movies, IFC Free is in the I section but not their Free Movies. I don't mind them being separated on different channels as long as they still kept a channel that had all of them available in A-Z format instead of it sending you to another channel, it now takes much longer.
They have basically cut the Anime Free section it only gives you the first episode of the series that appear on the Subscription channel, so its pointless. They changed the Anime subscription line-up from other shows and episodes gradually to what was being offered in the free section after like 3 years with no warning so I got through half of some shows and missed like the final 4 episodes of some.
If they were going to stop it they should have kept adding the shows that had already started until they finished their run. The Anime Subscription channel now has the stuff that's free on some other Cable companies systems like Time Warner.
SyFy and USA HD on Demand isn't always updated the 3 Scripted shows on SyFy (Warehouse 13, Eureka, and Haven) recently one of them usually doesn't get the episode for the week, its suppose to be up before the next days prime time and sometimes its been more than 3 days, its the same with USA's 5 Scripted shows (White Collar, Covert Affairs, Psych, Burn Notice, and Royal Pains) one is usually missed and one added really late, and its never the same show 2 weeks in a row.
If they are going to take so long to add those HD channels to my area (November when everyone was suppose to be in June). They could at least make sure the HD on Demand is Updated and in its timely manner.
They did finally get the channel line up on the new website.
NFL network was added today to the Charleston area. Channel 320. I was told that both the HD channel of NFL Network and NFL RedZone will be after the digital conversion happens in your area.
The digital conversion hasn't happened in my neighborhood yet and CSR said the computer was reading To Be Determined. So I am still "Patiently" waiting. ;-)
wyllie1 09-10-10, 03:23 PM Received a robo-call and a flyer from Suddenlink. Looks like October 5th is the day for the digital upgrade in my area ( Kanawha City ) and other areas as well. The wait will have been worth it since more channels are being added than first announced. Depending on the tiers you subscribe to, in addition to the 22 channels Suddenlink had already promised, the following will be available:
WLPX-DT Ion HD
Golf Channel HD
Speed Channel HD
Outdoor Channel HD
HLN HD
truTV HD
Lifetime Movie Network HD
E! HD
TCM HD
ESPNews HD
ESPNU HD
NFL Network HD
NFL Redzone HD
HBO Family HD
Encore HD
A total of 63 HD channels, including broadcast, will be available on the Charleston system. This is about 3 times what most of us have now. I sure hope this happens on schedule.

Thats good I wish my area was in October mine will be a month later. I actually watch the CW and when we finnally get it their shows will start going to reruns. They need to start rolling out bigger DVR's as well.
So we will have all of the Disney owned stations in HD except Disney XD, I wonder why?
(ESPN Classic doesn't have HD niether does Soap Net which will be Disney Junior next year)
I wonder if we have all of some other companies stations in HD.
We will now have all of our lacal channels in HD except MyZ which with it being broadcast with our NBC (WSAZ) station it may never happen.
Herdfanwv 09-11-10, 10:47 AM My flyer said September 28, but didn't list those additional channels. Haven't gotten any robocalls, so I am wondering if it will be pushed back.
sjividen 09-16-10, 07:30 AM Any word about the date for Suddenlink adding the extra HD channels in the Teays Valley area?
This was in today's paper. Not sure where Teays Valley area fits in.
http://dailymail.com/Business/201009151429
Suddenlink, the largest cable company in West Virginia, has restarted a $36.5 million upgrade to an all-digital format that will require some customers to get new equipment.
The company began the upgrade in June but put the brakes on when it realized customers needed more time to have digital links installed in their home.
Michael Kelemen, Suddenlink's director of government relations, said, "We also found many instances where the customer's wiring in the home was not adequate and needed to be replaced. So, many factors contributed to moving to all digital at a later date. But we still believe we'll be completed within Kanawha County by Nov. 2."
Kelemen said some customers in Kanawha County will be transitioned to the all-digital format on Oct. 5 and others on Nov. 2.
"We're currently working in the Logan and Williamson areas," he said. "Those areas will move to all-digital on Sept. 21." The transition will occur in Beckley in early November and in Parkersburg in mid-February.
SGRSBSKIER 09-16-10, 01:56 PM After I saw the article I called again today since I live in Kanawha County (Cross Lanes) hoping I would be in that October group, I was told a month and a half ago it would be November 9. They now told me December 7. I would really like to know because anything I have scheduled to record on an HD channel will have to be changed as thaey switch from the 700's to the 100's and 200's, I don't want to be out of town and miss days of recordings because they told me a week in advance, its not like you can set up a recording early when the channels don't exist yet.
I better not have to wait until December. I was ready in June when it was suppose to happen and since they delayed it I missed seeing all the Summer series from SyFy and USA in HD and if its December I will miss about half the CW season being in HD and about Half or All the SyFy season (some shows are only 10 episodes before a 6 month wait).
When I talked to suddenlink (a while ago) they said Kanawha County would be finished before they moved on. (Logan is in Logan County and Williamson is in Mingo County). For Teays Valley you could call and ask, the choice for the digital transition equipment an questions (#9) is the on that told me December 7 for Cross Lanes, the main technical support told me they didn't have the information.
I had a guy come out today as well. Since Saturday every once in a while my HD channels would freeze, pixelate, drop sound for a second sometimes it would happen again right away others it could be over an hour. Saturday was really bad. It wasn't a problem on my end.
He talked about the article and said his boss wasn't told any dates.
Has anyone noticed that now all of our analog channels have digital equivalents (1-27,29-39,41-78,97,99)? My TV lists where the Digital channel came from like:
34-1 (107)
51-1 (28)
60-1 (107)
61-1 (106)
here is the full list where the channels come from:
28 ---- 9 (29,30,32,43,45,47,48,51,54)
40 ---- 7 (39,69-71,74,76,77)
98 ---- 12 (1-9,22,97,99)
104 --- 8 (23,24,31,33,35-38)
105 --- 10 (41,42,44,46,49,52,53,57-59)
106 --- 10 (61-68,75,78)
107 --- 10 (25-27,34,50,55,56,60,72,73)
115 --- 12 (10-21)
Now when I turn to 106-1 or anything like 106-98 it always goes to 61-1. I don't know why they grouped those channels together, or why they made all channels digital even the ones below Channel 23 if they didn't plan to eliminate them soon, as they took 2 complete channels away. Now the ones that have less than 12 channels may have more but they would be the ones that require a box and are scrambled. It looks like they can fit 10 digital channels in to one, the ones with 12 have channels they could probably compress more as some have little information on it like channel 8 I don't think they show anything but a screen with words.
The digital channel of 97 (TV Guide) is better than the one I get through my DVR which has squiggly lines in it which have always been there and they said since it was analog being that high a number they could never fix it.
The HD Channels are in:
87 --- PBS (87-5)
89 --- ABC (89-1) CBS (89-3)
90 --- FOX (90-1) NBC (90-3)
I don't know where CW and ION will be (are). Interesting that they put a 1080i channel and a 720p channel together instead of the two 720p channels together, which are even owned by the same company.
wyllie1 09-26-10, 12:41 PM Received a card from Suddenlink on Saturday announcing a give-away of digital converters at Quaker State and Lube on October 2. Included in the message was a statement that the digital conversion would take place on Nov. 2. It seems I'll have to wait another month for the expanded HD lineup. These delays are getting ridiculous, Suddenlink needs to pick a date, advertize it, and stick to it. I am sure the management at WQCW and WLPX aren't happy with the situation either.
Herdfanwv 09-26-10, 02:53 PM I received a notice that my conversion is going to be on October 5.
wyllie1 09-28-10, 12:21 PM I am still hoping for October 5 as well, tired of the delay. We'll know next week.
I called today and was told that the conversion would happen for my neighborhood on Nov 2. I am in Fort Hill. I was hoping for the October date. Maybe it will actually happen now.
SGRSBSKIER 09-29-10, 05:08 PM I just called again to find out my date (Cross Lanes) and they told me its scheduled for December 7. I guess that article about all of Kanawha county being switched by Nov. 2 was a lie. If they have it scheduled for Dec. 7 that means they are not even trying to get it done by Nov. 2 and it could still get pushed back again.
Herdfanwv 10-05-10, 07:15 PM Got the new Suddenlink HD channels today...they look great.

SGRSBSKIER 10-08-10, 11:36 PM I had to replace my remote and the Teays Valley office said the Dunbar and Institute were on October 5, and she thinks my area should be in the next round as Institute is basically 2 miles away and on the other side of the interstate.
wyllie1 11-03-10, 12:37 PM New HD channels are now up in Kanawha City and look great. Thanks Suddenlink!

herdfan 11-03-10, 01:45 PM Still nothing in Teays Valley
Have they not removed the analog channels yet? I've heard bitching about people having to get a box for every TV.
scarletjim 11-03-10, 02:46 PM I had Suddenlink tech at my home to move cable line for some construction. Asked him when switchover was going to happen in Cross Lanes area. He said final switchover will occur on Dec. 6th. when they will kill the analog signals. Having noted that this date has been moved several time, I asked him how firm this date was, and he said very firm. The extended tier (SD) digital signals are already in the cable feed along with the analog ones.
Strange issue - I'm getting some but not all the new HDTV channels. The news block of HD CNN/CNBC etc is "Not Authorized call...".
This is occurring on multiple boxes.
I called Suddenlink and they "have" to send a tech to the home.
Anyone else have an issue like this?
SGRSBSKIER 11-07-10, 08:00 PM They were having problems last night. I tried watching on demand stuff and because it wouldn't work it caused my box to reset and it wouldn't come back on because it couldn't get a signal until they fixed the problem, some areas were having problems with channels over 100, I didn't have this problem all of my channels were working, yet because my box reset I coulnd't used it.
Now thats a problem I had mupltiple stuff in the DVR that I could have watched but because it reset I couldn't use it or record anything even though my channels were working. If that is going to happen they need to have a code that allows you to have access to your DVR recordings and the channels that your paying for and if they aren't working there just black at least you get the ones that are and your recordings. You shouldn't be locked out if things are available especially your recordings.
laker44 11-08-10, 09:17 AM SGRSBSKIER, Did you unplug it for a little while, then trying using it? Do not have the HD box, but doing it way that would reset the regular box.
SGRSBSKIER 11-08-10, 11:54 PM SGRSBSKIER, Did you unplug it for a little while, then trying using it? Do not have the HD box, but doing it way that would reset the regular box.
Yeah I did, and that would usually work, but the boxes will not turn back on if there isn't a signal from the cable company telling it what you have. I tried everything. I even called them and was on hold for 15 minutes they sent the signal to restart it but because of the problem it wasn't able to get to my box.
That is why they should give you a code to input to allow access to what you have paid for especially for a DVR. Your recordings should be accessible at all times.
sjividen 11-09-10, 05:14 PM Just got a robocall that the launch date for the new HD channels has been moved for Teays Valley: the new date is January 25th.
This has gotten ridiculous, so I'm pretty sure that I'll be giving DirecTV a call tomorrow. Wasn't June the original announced date for the switch? It's beyond me how Cross Lanes and Dunbar--just a few miles away--will have had the new channels for 4+ months.

Not Cross Lanes we haven't gotten the channels yet. Last time I called it won't happen until December 7. I still haven't gotten any calls or stuff in the mail about it.
That article in the paper about a month said all of Kanawha county would be done by Nov. 2 and that didn't happen, it didn't mention Teays Valley but said Parkersburg would be February. They said they wanted to finish Kanawha county before going elsewhere.
scarletjim 11-09-10, 06:12 PM Just got the Robocall as well. I live in Cross Lanes. New date is late January. Of course, based on their record, I pretty sure this date will move again. Maybe, it will happen in 2011 but I wouldn't count on it.
clueless 12-02-10, 12:31 PM For you DirecTV customers I just noticed a few days ago the CW-30 is in HD now.
SGRSBSKIER 12-10-10, 08:17 PM I just called Suddenlink since VOD isn't updating since Monday. (Eureka and Warehouse 13 on Syfy. Psych and Burn Notice on USA. Sing-Off on NBC. They all usually update the day after new episodes air. Tower Prep on Cartoon Network (Which usually updates the previous weeks episode after the new episode Tuesday nights.)
I also asked when Cross Lanes would go through the Digital Transition and they couldn't find it. They said there is an update on 12/20 somewhere.
I have had everything ready since the original date of 6/16. Then they said 7/14, then I was told 11/9, then Michael Kelemen, Suddenlink's director of government relations, said all of Kanawha County should be done by 11/2, well then that day I called and was told it wouldn't be until 12/7. Now nothing.
Now it has come to a point were they are just lying.
wyllie1 12-16-10, 01:08 PM Suddenlink has added Hallmark and BET to its HD lineup. I would like to see the Weather Channel and VS next.
HorizontalHold 12-17-10, 12:14 PM Here's a working channels.conf file for the Charleston area -- useful if you use computery tuner-y kinds of things...

Suddenlink has added Hallmark and BET to its HD lineup. I would like to see the Weather Channel and VS next.
I would like to see VS and FoxSports Pittsburgh in HD soon
SGRSBSKIER 12-31-10, 01:26 AM Once agian Suddenlink isn't working on Thursday night. Last week it was out (everything phone internet and cable) from 12:39 AM until ? it was after 3:30 AM. This week at least only the cable isn't working once again sometime after 12:01 AM and before 12:30 AM and its still out. Their VIP Perks number is Busy and I have been on hold for over 25 minutes.
They haven't Updated VOD on USA or SyFy since I don't have them in HD yet I watch all of there shows that way but the season finales of Burn Notice and Psych were never added to USA and the season finale of Sancuary was never added to SyFy and neither were the Christmas episodes of Warehouse 13 or Eureka.
I haven't ever really had a problem with Suddenlink and actually thought they were pretty good until October when the cable would cut out for a second or less (a freeze of the picture or loss of sound) it doesn't even make it through a half hour show with out it doing it and sometimes its worse than others. I have had multiple people come out to look at it and they don't have any idea why and could tell me unless the are monitoring it when it drops out. We were suppose to have the digital transition no later than November then it was pushed back until December now it who knows. Now outages the past 2 Thursdays and not updating VOD, I am not happy at all with Suddenlink.

Is this just your home or also your neighbors? I have no problems at all on the west side of Charleston.
scarletjim 12-31-10, 06:46 PM I also experienced a partial loss of service in the Cross Lanes area as well after midnight. I was watching the Nebraska-Washington game on ESPN HD 773 when the signal broke-up and froze. I checked other stations and some were gone and some were not. All the feed from 760 to 777 were gone. The local HDs were still on 780-784. Some of the SD stations were on and some were not. I switched SD ESPN (26), but there was no signal. There was no signals around it either. I reset the box but nothing changed. I gave up and went to bed. I didn't check the internet so I don't know whether it was on or not. This morning the signals were back.
By the way, Suddenlink just upped their rates for January. My bill went up about $5. Suddenlink said it was a general increase for cable TV service due the cost of doing business. When I checked with the Suddenlink sales contact, they could give me no indication at to when the HD conversion would occur. The last "promise date" was January 27th. If they miss it, I'm switching to a dish for TV.
SGRSBSKIER 01-03-11, 05:34 PM Is this just your home or also your neighbors? I have no problems at all on the west side of Charleston.
They said it was a wide area and finally answered after I finished writing and said it was up or would be in the next hour. I think it came up a little after I got off the phone.
Now the freezing of the picture may only be my house as they haven't said anyone else has the problem. They have no idea of how to fix it or what's causing it. I have the wire protection plan so if it was my house it wouldn't cost me anything extra. I will probably call them next month if it is still happening after the digital switch happens (if it does).
SGRSBSKIER 01-20-11, 05:44 PM Does anyone use an external hard drive on Suddenlink on the Explorer 8300HDC? I want to increase my recording space. 20 hours of HD is not enough. How would I connect it, USB or eSATA port? What would be the best drive to use?
I have heard other people on other cable companies use the eSATA port but the last time I talked to Suddenlink they said the eSATA port was disabled but the USB port will work. Currently I only have a couple year old Iomega 500 GB USB 2.0 drive. I haven't tried it yet don't want to screw anything up on my current recordings.
SGRSBSKIER 01-22-11, 08:00 PM Just got a thing in the mail, today, saying January 25 is when my area's (Cross Lanes) digital switch is happening.
wyllie1 01-24-11, 12:03 PM I hope it happens since you have had to wait so long. Short notice only 2 days?

You will want to use the eSATA port. I did this last year, and it worked great, but since then the SATA hard drive has died. I haven't gone to the trouble to replace the HD yet.

Maybe since I have called so much and I have had those boxes since June I was checked off their notification list or many people could wake up tomorrow and wonder where their channels went. It's starting right now, was watching Dana Carvey on Leno and at 12:02 it went dark lost Phone and Internet and it took me a bit too long to unhook the cable and try with out the box to see the end of his appearance but we still have the analog 2-22. It was back up sometime before 1:40 with the new channel lineup.

That's really interesting since I spoke with 3 different people at Suddenlink today and all insisted that the eSATA port was most definitely NOT enabled. I wanted to check before I bought an extra drive and each one insisted that they requested that the port was not enabled at Suddenlink's request.
Has anybody else had success adding a drive via the eSATA port?
sjividen 01-27-11, 12:16 PM As it turns out, I guess my complaining got somebody's attention. I had a message yesterday from a Suddenlink employee stating that YES the eSATA port will work...though he was very clear that they don't support it.
So I guess I'm going to give it a whirl.

That is what they told me a while ago, but he said the USB port works (which I was told didn't do anything before) and that could be used, but I have never heard anyone use the USB port for a external hard drive.
I read the manual for the Explorer 8300 HDC and it said to contact your cable provider for supported hard drives so I did, I sent the email out Tuesday at 8:00 pm and still haven't heard back.
I have read that the box comes with the eSATA port enabled but the cable company can disable it. So they should be able to enable it if they disabled it. I don't know if they would have to come out and do it or send a signal to it like when I first got the box, a message would always come up saying the box would turn off if you didn't press anything it happened at about 1:00 am every night.

One of the people I spoke with yesterday implied that the eSATA port is enabled or disabled by the manufacturer at the cable company's request. While I'm sure that's true, she was apparently making things up when she told me that the eSATA is DEFINITELY not enabled on Suddenlink boxes.
Buy.com has a 2TB Fantom eSATA drive for $90 right now, but I've read that the 8300 doesn't like it very well. So I think I might try this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003MVZ60S/
SGRSBSKIER 01-31-11, 07:59 AM Well all those new HD channels we got less than a week ago none of them work and haven't since just a bit after 12:01 am. All of our previous HD channels work and all the digital stations still work just not those.
They weren't much help when I called them and said they will have to send someone out and they can't be here until Wednesday at 1:00-5:00. First that's rediculous that they can't get here for 2 days and second how could this be my problem if all channels and VOD work except for the new HD channels we got?
I called back about 2 hours later and told them again and then told them that a friend in Teays Valley had the same problem. They said this was the first time they have heard about it. It evidently got fixed sometime during the day.
sjividen 01-31-11, 09:08 AM I can confirm that the Western Digital DVR Expander does work with Suddenlink's 8300HDC. I just plugged it in, reset the box, and the 8300 recognized the drive and formatted it. Couldn't have been easier.

Have you tested it out completely yet?
The problems that most expanders have, if they have problems, from what I have read is when you record 2 programs while watching another program that's been recorded (I do that all the time). The ones that can't do it get blocking, skipping, or audio dropouts. I guess it the ones that don't work can't handle transferring the amount of data required for saving 2 HD programs and playing a 3rd one. They would all have to be new recordings as the old recordings would still be on the DVR.
We haven't been able to get local channels in HD since Sunday. Dish reports that they are relocating the local HD channels to another satellite. Just to confirm their report,is anyone else with Dish Network not getting locals in HD?
This is an issue for Dish Network from Pittsburgh down to Charleston, WV. Can you imagine the uproar if they don't get it fixed by Sunday?? Pittsburgh Steelers fans will be throwing their dishes in the trash!
Lucky for us, we get everything but channel 13 with an antenna.
herdfan 02-01-11, 06:39 PM Looks like a satellite failure:

Thanks for the link herdfan! Guess I wasn't told bull but also didn't get the full story. Not surprising.
Time to wait it out I guess. Hopefully they get things fixed soon. We have a lot of recording scheduled that isn't happening in HD. Checking daily to reprogram to antenna or SD. It could be worse since only missing locals in HD.
Thanks again.

MacMan1999 02-10-11, 03:52 PM I was online with suddenlink customer service last week and the tech said that the eSATA port was disabled, I then asked them what they were going to do to address the limited 20 hrs of HD recording and was told that they were looking into new boxes but couldn't give me any speciffics.

Suddenlink mentioned they signed a deal with TiVo late last year for the TiVo premiere and they were supposed to start rolling them out in some areas at the end of last year and will be rolled out over this year.
Yes I was told that the eSATA port was typically disabled, but some people have used it and I plan to get a 1 terabyte DVR expander in the next couple of weeks.
Their support is not always that helpful. I sent them an email last week, I went back and proof read it before I sent it and it was right, asked about Disney XD in HD since we have all other Disney owned channels in HD, but in their response anytime I mentioned Disney XD the X was missing, anytime I mentioned ESPN the N was gone ESPNews was Spews and all HD was changed to HUD. Even in their response email things were wrong don't was don'T. They said they forwarded my request but with everything spelled wrong it won't help.
SGRSBSKIER 02-24-11, 01:26 PM I just got the 1 TB Western Digital DVR Expander (WDBABT0010HBK-NESN). I hooked everything up and went from 62% to 9%, I have the 8300 HDC. I started to record 2 things and 2 minutes later the box rebooted but worked fine later.
I did the test where you record 2 programs and then play one of those from the beginning. The picture froze (pixelated) once but only on one of the recordings so I don't know if it was the recording or the channel. Tonight I will be recording 2 things again for 2 hours, 3 hour long shows and 2 half hour shows, and will probably watch a previously recorded show that is still on the DVR hard drive (the recordings go to which ever has more space so until I get to about 100 hours of HD recordings everything will be on the Expander hard drive). I am liking all the extra space, I don't have to worry about what I record anymore or how fast I have to watch them.
wyllie1 03-04-11, 03:27 PM Suddenlink has added two channels to its 100 series tier, a country video channel (125) and a rock video channel (128), however neither is in HD. Suddenlink shouldn't put SD channels on an HD tier.
Looks like they have added FoxSports Pittsburgh HD (channel 229).
SGRSBSKIER 03-20-11, 01:24 PM Has anyone actually seen fox sports Pittsburg in HD. Every time I have turned to 229 it's always been 480p.

I thought the first night I saw it up it looked good. But it has been 480p everytime I have checked since then. I called and told them about it. They were going to have the local dispatch look into it.
So we will see.
wyllie1 04-08-11, 03:29 PM Root Sports Pittsburg now showing as 720p, now can see Pirates games in HD.
IF Channel 8 and Channel 11 is on the Same Tower why can't I get Channel 8 ?
I can pull in Ch 3 almost Full Signal. Ch 13 the Same. Ch 11 smidgen less. BUT Ch. 8 NOTHING is the Signal of 8 not as strong and cover out as far as Ch. 3, 11 and 13 I am on the Edge of the Viewing area. Close to the Mason County Line in Ky. ( Not WVa. ) in Tollesboro in other words. Seems kind of odd same Tower get one but not the other. One almost perfect and the other nothing...Nada...Zilch...not a Bleep? I figure it has to be the Signal pattern not reaching out this far. Also I know Ch. 3 and 13 are Closer to me and Ch. 8 and 11 are further away. Why one but not the other?

You are correct. Channel 11 is on UHF 19 and Channel 8 is on UHF 41. The higher UHF channels do not carry as far as lower UHF channels. When frequencies were first assigned, Channel 13 was on UHF 47 and at their low power you had trouble picking them up if you were across the street from the tower. They moved to VHF 13 when the Columbus OH station decided to not use VHF 13.
What kind of antenna are you using? A deep fringe model like a 4228 or DB8 or possibly a directional yagi might allow you to pull it in. Are you getting Channel 33?

I think herdfan is on the right track. Channel 13 (RF 13), channel 11 (RF 19), and channel 3 (RF 23) are all lower channels. Channel 8 (RF 41) is at a considerably higher frequency. I don't know what any of their radiation patterns are, but maybe your antenna doesn't do as well with upper UHF.
OTOH, I receive WCHS channel 8 fine from more than 60 miles away, so I think they're using plenty of power. FWIW, I'm using a Channel Master 4228 antenna and a C.M. 7777 preamp. I do have trouble receiving channel 13.
[edit] Oops! I just checked tvfool.com, and you're about 1.5 times as far from WCHS as I am. You probably will need a good UHF antenna and a good preamp, and you may have to get them well up into the air, especially if you don't have good line-of-sight. My antenna is currently sitting on a chair aimed out an upstairs bedroom window, and I'm hoping to get channel 13 well if I ever get it up on the tower. Good luck.
Winguard 8200 U and the Booster AP- 8275 ( Channel Master ? ) Just a Question on 8 and 11 Really do not care because I turn it towards Cincinnati and Lexington most of the time anyways. Always Puzzled me FCC and Neilson a long time ago had us in the Cincinnati Viewing Area DMA. Then decided to switch us into Charleston and Huntington's Viewing area. Across the River Adams County Ohio is in Cincinnatis DMA and Adams County border goes past Vanceburg probably 3 to 5 Miles as far as going eastward Funny how they decide on County Coverage VS. Partial County etc. I can see Vanceburg or Eastward Pulling in Huntington....maybe even Lexington or the SW Corner of the County....BUT Pulling in Cincinnati might be tougher for them. IF Satellite let me have Cincinnati VS. Huntington- Charleston. I would chose Cincinnati because they are closer. To me VS Huntington - Charleston BUT who cares I can get all 3 so why worry. The only thing I hate is WSAZ's Split Studio One News Anchor in Huntington One News Anchor in Charleston plus the Bigger trump card ( BUT I have not watched it for a while tho.) Does Tim Irr or however you spell it to me always looks scared all of the time..... BIG Eyed.... like his eyes are going to pop out?

My wife thinks he is just waiting until they do a live action version of Toy Story as she thinks he looks like Woody.
No.....No Ch.33
Yea reminds me of Woody.....Maybe if they make a New Masters of the Universe movie he can be Mantenna if those eyes pop out.
WSAZ news quietly went HD today. I don't think they said one word about it. Looks great! They had a few hiccups here and there, but they actually had 100% of field footage in HD on day one.

I like the additions, The Hub and BBC America I still want. I don't get the sports or any movie tier so I personally don't care about any above channel 499.
If there was any space issues with adding anything I would question HSN and GSN and for our area HBO Latino.
wyllie1 09-09-11, 08:11 PM Glad to see the new additions. 24 new HD channels spread over several tiers with everyone getting at least 6 more channels. I also picked up the HBOs and will now seriously consider getting the tier having the Science Channel. Most glad to see VS and Disney XD in the Expanded Basic tier.
just saw the additions and I am very happy. I doubted that I ever was going to see vs and fsc in HD.
laker44 11-26-11, 12:42 PM Don't know if they will also be adding them in the Charleston area.
I got a card in the mail today saying that Suddenlink will be adding the following channels to the Parkersburg, WV lineup on December 15th.
QVC HD

wyllie1 01-07-12, 03:43 PM Does anyone have the Suddenlink Tivo? How does it compare to the SA 8300HDC and is it worth the switch? Is there a monthly fee to Tivo?
sjividen 01-25-12, 11:06 AM I called Suddenlink last night to ask about the TiVo service...and now they're coming out Friday to install.
It would've cost me approximately $20 more per month to replace the Suddenlink HD-DVR with the TiVo. But by just adding the TiVo in keeping the HD-DVR, I was guaranteed that it would somehow only increase my bill by $5.50. Plus, they waived the $30 processing fee and knocked the install fee from $30 to $10.
Has anybody else already gotten one. How are they compared to the piece-of-junk Scientific Atlanta?
wyllie1 01-30-12, 02:03 PM I also have the Tivo and find the interface to be much better than the SA 8300 DVR. The Tivo also has more than twice the recording space for HD ( about 45 hours) rhan the SA. I am glad to have switched.
Suddenlink Tivo installed this week.
I have a 1 Premier DVR 2 Preview receiver configuration.
I did have the SA HDDVR and a single SA HD receiver.
I called and made arrangements on Monday and the install was completed on Tuesday evening. Very happy with quick turnaround. Install crew prompt and quick.
The bad news - The wifi setup for streaming from the Premier to the Preview hardware is a disaster.
I have a g router with multiple APs.
Signal strength is 80+% on the receivers.
Playback of HD content is not watchable. Start/stop choppy behavior.
I like the Tivo interface. I haven't had time to use any of the internet content including audio.
Suddnelink needs to better educate their CS reps and install folks.
I was not informed on the phone that the multi room system used wifi or that the hardware would not allow recording.
A member of the install crew told me that the receivers had hdd.
The same person explained that recorded content should be "transferred" from receiver to receiver due to the poor performance of the streaming.
Needless to say I was very confused about what hardware I had, how it was configured, and how it was expected to perform.
It took a few hours of hunting on the internet to find the product literature for the preview hardware and how it fits into Tivo's product line.
Suddenlink does not have any mention of the Preview receiver or the fact that it cannot record content, that I can find, on their site.
In the end I have gained a HD receiver and lowered my bill by $1 according to the CS rep. I did have to provide a CC number for security against the hardware.
I see the potential for some serious customer complaints due to ill informed customer service and install resources.
SGRSBSKIER 04-13-12, 01:50 PM Has anyone noticed any problems with WCHS HD channel?
It's like the picture's contrast increases slightly then goes back to normal. It does it a lot so it is like a slow strobe light (not as bright) and is much more noticeable when dark scenes are playing. It is very annoying. This is on Suddenlink (don't know if that matters) and it's the only channel that does it as far as I know.
WVUFloydFan 04-18-12, 06:41 PM I've notice the same thing. Been happening about 3 -4 weeks now.
