I thought I read somewhere that the Batman Begins Deluxe Edition DVD has a different version of the film, where they took all the extras off the main disc, put them onto a second disc and therefore upped the bitrate on the film itself, making it a better picture than the normal DVD release.

Batman Begins was Friday night. I was disappointed that the audio wasn't DTS or DD.
Saturday night we watched The Jerk. It'd been years since I'd watched it straight through, and my wife had never seen it. I love that movie!
Last night was Kicking and Screaming. I know a lot of people loathe Will Farrell, but he cracks me up. But this movie was a dud...
Cancelled my Blockbuster moviepass this weekend and signed up for Netflix. Blockbuster's in-store selection has really gone into the toilet lately. (or at least the one by me)

Watched Monsters, Inc. as the first movie in my new HT. Looked great... great movie. It was my wife's first time seeing the movie and she enjoyed it a lot.
I watched Sin City last night for the first time and was disappointed. I had high hopes for this film and despite the great visuals, the storyline (or lack thereof) let me down. I would rather have stuck with one set of characters thoughtout the film than 3 practically independent storylines.

Don't worry, it is Dolby Digital 5.1.
Just not DTS like it has at the end of the credits (don't understand why they drop the DTS since they used it in the theaters ??)

Hey, late in the evening at my meet a group of us( all guys by then, some of us with a few in us )watched just from "Her name was Goldie "through Marv's electricution. We laughed so hard ..... I could have watched that part again right then and gotten great fun out of it. It is so over the top that laughing was all I could do. :o

My second time around for this, it's good. Keira Knightly could bend me like Beckham. ;)
Arrested Develpment, Season 2
I was late on watching this, but I love this show. Widescreen is awesome, too. If only all TV on DVD were 16:9 (and this funny!), I'd own many more.
Shaun of the Dead (HBO HD)
One of the best comedies I've seen in a long time, very funny.
Anchorman (Unrated DVD)
Another great comedy, this is one of my top 10 of all time.

Last night we watched Meg Ryan's "In The Cut". Neither of us cared much for it - I'm normally one for thrillers like this, but the story was weak. There wasn't much of an explained connection between the bad guy and the victims, the the implied bad guys were just SO intentional that it was obvious early on as to who the REAL bad guy was.
It was a decent movie, but far from notable. Now I realize why the only real hype behind it was people who wrote the paper saying it was "trash" and that they walked out after the first 20 minutes because they thought it was going to turn into p0rn. Funny thing is that they probably wouldn't have complained if you were seeing a woman during the scene-in-question instead of a guy.
Strange - my NAD T773 wasn't picking up the DD5.1 track... :o
Yeah that's weird. At the very beginning with the bats and the Batman logo, the sound is awesome!

We caught Kingdom of Heaven last night and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Friday night.
KOH: Kingdom was OK. While there was lots of movie there just did not seem to be lots of story. I guess it felt like there were to many subplots.
HGG: Hitchhikers the movie is not as good as the book of course but was an interesting attempt. Considering the rather bizarre nature of the book it would indeed be difficult to produce that on film. My wife thought they captured the whale perfectly!

I watched Rambo First Blood part 2 with my son. Good action movie.... I didn't realize it but *James Cameron* was listed as a co-writer w/ Stallone. Jerry Goldsmith also did the music. Jerry Goldsmith (http://imdb.com/name/nm0000025/)
I also saw "Equilibrium" /w Christian Bale. Had some action scenes that were very comparable to the Matrix. Bale was very good in it. Plot was a little iffy.

We watched Layer Cake on a 19" LCD Saturday night in my camper in the woods. Movie was ok. Maybe 2.5 out of 5. Spent half the movie critiquing the display (it's new) and the other half trying to see the James Bond in Daniel Craig (supposedly the new Bond).
BTW: I NEED surround in the camper.
Me and the wifee watched HOUSE OF WAX a few minutes ago. I thought it was pretty good kind of predictable at times but I love movies so I went with it. My wife fell asleep as she said it got slow at times.
I am a fan of joel silver and robert zemeckis films and the combined efforts in thier company Dark Castle

Some "B" type horror movies I can think of off the top my head are:
"It Came From Outer Space" (1953)
"Eight Legged Freaks" (2002)
"Bats" (1999)
"Them!" (1954)
"The Blob" the original one, with Steve McQueen
"The Thing" The original and remake are both good choices
"Poltergeist" (1982) not a b movie, but always a good watch
"Jeepers Creepers" (2001)

Sunday night we watched Kevin Spacey as Bobby Darrin in "Beyond The Sea". I really enjoy these types of movies where we get a glimpse into the lives of people like this. I think that sums up the movie (Napoleon Dynomite). It shouldn't be funny, but to certain people (like me), it is downright histerical. I lost it during the "skit" scene, but it is genuinely funny throughout, if you look at it from a certain point of view. And really, isn't there a little "Napoleon" in all of us?

Just received "Last Days" this evening and I thought I would pop it in the DVD player. WOW ....I can sit through some pretty bad movies but this has to be one of the worst. I fast forwarded through the first 20 minutes. It was a movie loosely based on Kurt Cobain. Gus Van Sant (the director) must have been on something. Finished watching the Star Wars Bonus Disc that you get when you buy Star Wars - Episode III from Walmart or Sam's Club. It is about one hour long and recaps the five previous movies, as told by C3PO and R2D2. And it was in 4:3! I was spellbound watching Downfall (Der Untertag). Bruno Ganz is outstanding in the main role of Adolph Hitler. I have seen many actors attempt this portrayal but Ganz's acting is incredible. This film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film, Downfall takes you into Hitler's bunker during the brutal and harrowing last days of the the Battle of Berlin. Seen through the eyes of Hitler's infamous secretary Traudi Junge, optimism crumbles into grim realization and terror as it becomes clear that Germany's defeat is inevitable. As the Russian army circles the city, the dimly lit halls of the underground refuge become an execution chamber for the Fuhrer and his closest advisors. This film also has incredible bass effects. My HT room became the bunker. Best watched in German with English titles.

Picked this one up yesterday just to complete the set, but even my kids weren't all that pleased with it.
I agree with you that the premise of his "fall" seems a bit weak. Something about going from "well.. I don't know.." to killing the Jedi kids just didn't seem all that plausible. And how does he become the ruthless, calculating villain in just a few years after that?
Oh... and what we watched last night? "End of Days." It's one of the wife's favorites. Not that it doesn't have plot holes of its own. :D

Interesting.. other than Ep V, Ep III is my favorite of the six. You can't fit an entire character development turn-around in a single movie (which is expected to be a bit over two hours), especially when there is so much to cover in the transition from II to IV. His turn to the dark side with anger, etc, was evident in the second movie as well. I also saw Ep III's timeline as longer than most of the other movies, which allows for more transition, etc.
I agree it's a stretch, but I think it did a pretty good job of making that transition in a limited amount of screen time to work with. Ideal would have been a bunch of 3 hour movies..

I finished up Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - the movie, the director's commentary track, and most of the extra material - that was a lot of watching!
As for Anakin's fall, all the elements were in Episode II (pride, anger, love, jealousy), and even Episode I (misses his mom, etc.). Of course, you could always pick up the animated Clone Wars Discs that fill in the gap between Ep II and III and further shows Anakin's descent. Disc 1 is out, but no Disc 2 so far... c'mon Lucas!

Frustrating isn't it? Sure, the baby sleeps just fine, and my wife stays awake just fine, when we're watching some chick flic. But the moment we try to watch a Batman type flic it's crying baby and sleepy wife. She actually wanted to watch Batman, and was pissed when the baby woke up. Hey maybe to better illustrate how evil Anakin had become , rather than killing a room full of Jedi children, George coulda had Anakin strangle a litter of kitttens...
and holy cow, what about Padme? Once a great ruler of a planet reduced to a whimpering apartment hermit. And she dies because she lost the will to live? First you have to buy into the fact that losing Anakin as a boyfriend would actually be a bad thing, then you have to believe he's more important than the 2 children she just gave birth to....er maybe she really died of post partum depression, much more beleivable.
You really have to suspend any sort of critical viewing at all, to enjoy this movie.
On the plus side, the light sabre fighting was probably the best of the Star Wars series..and seeing Anakin burned up and in little bits was kinda fun...oh yeah and the cgi wasn't as atrocious as it was with Attack of the Clones

I thought the movie was building up Anakin's turn to the darkside pretty well, but then the actual turn was pretty anti-clamatic.
Some of the stuff that's on the DVD is stuff I would have like to have seen in the theaters like the start of the rebellion and Yoda arriving on Dagobah.
Also, a question I have at the end is "Do Yoda and Obi-wan know Vader is still alive?". Basically Obi-wan left him for dead.
I thought a more interesting end would go like this. We see Obi-wan watching Luke from a distance, Leia growing up at her adoptive father's side as he confronts the emperor in the senate, etc. Then we see Obi-wan meditating, and then hear from Yoda "It is time". We see him rise as the older Obi-wan and go off to rescue Luke. Now THAT would have been a cool ending.

I'm glad everyone seems to have loved Shaun of the Dead. At one point, in a fit of histrionics I called it one of the greatest movies ever made. This quote has since been used against me entirely too many times. Obviously, I enjoyed it a lot. I actually like most of the Brittish stuff that has come out in recent years. Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels (actually saw this in London years ago) started it all out for me. I would HIGHLY recommend Layer Cake. Last night the wife and I watched "The Polar Express". Starring Tom Hanks, which I think is one of the greatest actors of our time. This movie is worth seeing for the animation on it's own, but it was also a very enjoyable movie. I can image in the very near future not being able to tell the difference from real actors and those that are computer animated.

Funny coincidence! I watched the Polar Express & March of the Penguins last night. It's an excellent family double-header feature. It was chilly in Arizona :)

I just have Comcast HD. What does HDNet come on? A guy at work got sat HD(not sure with who) and he gets that UHD. But he does not get INHD channels. It'd be nice if someone offered all the HD choices.

Got a chance to see War of the Worlds with my young nephew and one of his lil buddies. I read all about the things that people were saying about turning down their subs. I ran only one of mine, and it sounded good. Didn't have to turn anything down, and was able to listen to it at reference level. The sound was just right for me, but the kids kept saying that it was "making our ears hurt" :D Not to mention the number of times that they jumped! Anybody see Stealth yet?

I didn't notice deleted scenes (we would have watched them I had noticed them), but I think there was a directors commentary. The theatrical trailer was on there too.
There's a DVD-ROM based portion of the disc - a (lame) "beat Lumberg to work" game, sound bites you can save off to your HDD, wallpapers, a screen saver, and a couple of other things.

Last night we watched "Mr and Mrs Smith". Entertaining to watch (Angelina usually is) with great audio, a nice picture, but a predictable story.
'Black Hawk Down' - I didn't think it was a compelling story, I guess it just never hit me that way, but I do own it. My favorite is 'We were soldiers'. I think it hits all of the marks that it needs to, but there are some parts where it tries to enter a laugh which I think is unnecessary. I remember both movies coming out at the same time and there was going to be a screening by the President for either one and they chose 'BlackHawk Down'.
Wife & I saw 'Polar Express' over the weekend. I never read the story on which it's based, but I guess you have to be a kid to enjoy it, b/c it's driving me nuts. I can usually get into these sorts of kids stories, but this one is just weird. The visuals & sound effects are great to watch however the little girl has a funny look to her which is distracting.

I felt Madagascar was pretty forced. What seems to come natural to PIxar seems forced and commercialized from Dreamworks IMHO (except Shrek 1&2). On that note WHEN will Hollywood and Mike Myers for that matter know when enough is enough and let a good thing stay that way instead of miking it to death for money?! I guess I answered my question, but I heard there wil be a Shrek 3..which is very likely going the cheapen the whole thing. Quit while you are ahead!!!

In fact, I would suggest that you watch Serenity then go back and watch Firefly. Otherwise a lot of the movie would be a little redundant.
On a COMPLETELY different note I just watched Primer. VERY GOOD. Just make sure you can give it your full attention or you might miss out on what is going on.

Definitely not the ending to the Firefly verse....Joss says that the DVD sales are totally the determining factor if Unverisal will pick them up for a sequel...he's said, in the perfect world, he'd do two more movies and then go back to the series....but who knows...I love the Firefly verse...definitely some of hte most interesting Sci-Fi I've seen in a very long time

Just had a Full Screen incident last week. I was in a hurry to do some last second shopping and got a digital camera for my brother. Had a 15% off coupon or something and liked one of the entry level cameras there. Well I also wanted to pick up 40 year-old Virgin as it was only 13.99. Obviously, they were quite busy. I finally got everything rung up and right as I was giving him my credit card I saw the dreaded words FULL SCREEN (they should have flashing neon on these cases for proper notification). I told him I HAD to go get a widescreen version. He was fine with it. I come back 10 seconds later and he had voided out the transaction. Starts going through everything again only now he cannot find the coupon. It flat out disappeared. Takes him 10 minutes and he just gives up trying to find it. I am 20 minutes late to meet my family at my house, who are sitting outside my front door in the cold by this time. He was kind of looking at me like "is it ok without the 15% off the 200 camera?" Obviously thats a big fat no. So he goes looking for a manager to override it and give me the coupon. Finally I get out of there, probably 20 minutes from when I started checking out. I got some dirty stares when I got back but atleast I didn't have a FULL SCREEN movie in my collection.
No offense to CC, I will still shop there over BB EVERYTIME.

It has been awhile since I have added anything to this thread, but it is a new year so what the heck...
I watched the newest creation from the direct to video Steven Seagal collection, Black Dawn. My wife doesn't care for his movies and she was upstairs downloading the 300 plus pictures we took at a New Year's Eve party last night. The movie was one of his better direct to video releases. There were no voice overs and only a few obviously placed body doubles for Seagal. The move had a very dark theme to it. The whole thing practically took place at night and in poorly lit rooms.
We also watched Four Brothers since we have to return it tomorrow. My wife and I both thought the movie was pretty good. It had some pretty intense scenes and a terrific ending. Well worth the rental.

Dark City is a fantastic movie. A title that I added to my collection the moment it was released on DVD.
I'm laid up in bed now and not able to catch up on anything! Got a massive herniated disc New Years Day and have been unable to get up and walk and make it to the basement.
Did get to watch the Sugar Bowl though! :)

I agree that was a cool movie.
Here's some others from the 80's I would recommend:
Creator (Peter O'Toole)
The Last Starfighter (great ending!)

We braved the trip to the local Multi-plex with our 8 year old son today to see The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.
We decided to show up VERY close to the start time since we figured a movie that had been out 4 weeks would not be that crowded and we could avoid the commercials. WRONG! It was a FULL theater, which they had actually over-sold.
We wound up sitting all the way in the back, but it was a good view with no one to kick my seat :).
The movie is awesome, and the quality of the animation is fantastic. Aslan (The Lion) looked super. Can't wait for this to hit a HD format for home.

Thanks. It's the most painful thing I've ever experienced, and it made watching the Sugar trickey, not being unable to jump up and down.
It has allowed me though to catch up on some TV shows, but it's no fun when that's being done on a 27" CRT set in the bedroom. Though, it may help me convince the Mrs. that a 42" plasma nice look nice hanging off the wall. :)

I saw "The Island" last night which I thought had a great look and a good plot but it needed better editing. It was too long and the special effects at the end were just thrown in. Don't get me wrong they did look good though.
I watched "Midnight Cowboy" on HDNet tonight that I had TiVoed. What a bore. This film was highly rated??? Hoffman's performance was good but that was it. It is hard to believe that it won Best Picture in 1970. Among other awards. A different time I guess???

Just watched Lord of War and I am totally shocked. I pegged it as a action-comedy from the trailer but I couldn't be further from the truth. Another casuality of a absolutely horrible marketing campaign filled with misinformation and misdirection, Lord of War more closely resembles Syriana than Black Hawk Down. The movie is interesting to watch and really has some a good running political commentary throughout it. Nicholas Cage, while funny at times, really only uses humor to hide what is character actually is, evil. An evil character which while, as much as we want to hate him, we can't help but feel sorry for his situation.
Anyways, it comes out next Tuesday on DVD and I highly suggest it. Probalby not a good movie for the kids, but a deep and provocative movie which will definitely have you thinking as the credits roll.

It's probably an Einsteinian Relativity thing given what I watched first, but I remember wondering if Sphere was the best sci fi ever done, assuming one is capable of ignoring the memorable [sic] anticlimatic ending that I hated so much in the theatre that I was now cumfy with on the DVD; it's certainly a movie up there in the top 1000 or so. Good quote from the Sphere I ended up saying to myself several times during Transporter 2, "It's not impossible. It's just ridiculous." which desperatly belongs in so many courtroom movies where the defense attorney insists on an answer to "But is it possible Doctor?" :)

Watched an old B&W Jerry Lewis flick - I forget the name offhand, but it was the one where he was an idiot sent in undercover to find out why a movie studio (Parimutual) was losing money. Not his best work, but it had it's moments, and the PQ was actually okay...

I just wrapped up a double feature...
1. Lord of War with Nicholas Cage. This was not what I expected it to be. It was slow and I kept wanting it to end. Not recommended at all. I really could use a good Cage action movie...
2. Transporter 2 - Now this was one fun movie to watch, especially if you like those over the top and unrealistic action sequences. The plot was pretty weak, but the fight scenes made up for it.

Since my wife has been working nonstop on her scrapbooks, I have had several opportunities to watch movies she wouldn't enjoy watching. Last night I watched the first hour of Tombstone. Started watching American Pie: Band Camp. Dumped it after about 15 minutes. NOT funny.
We then moved on to Saved with Mandy Moore. It was OK, reminded me of Mean Girls not only in content, but also how there were so many more directions they could've gone to take the movie to a higher level. Not enough risks. Interesting that Micheal Stipe was one of the producers.

My wife and I signed up for one month of Blockbuster's all you can watch for $30 deal and have been trying to watch 2 DVDs every night in order to catch up some of the movies and TV shows we've always wanted to see but never seem to get around to. While it seemed like a good idea when we signed up, it turns out that it is really gruelling trying to watch 2 DVDs every night, even when you ignore all the extra features. I don't know if we'll make it for the full month.
The movie that has impressed us the most so far is probably "Donnie Darko, the Director's Cut". I have no idea if the original cut is better or worse than the director's cut, but either one is probably well worth a rental.
The TV show that has frankly astonished us is season 1 of "Lost". We had ignored it when it was on TV, assuming that it was some stupid "Survivor" rip off/soap opera, and I suppose it is, but wow, what a good show! It is the most compelling TV show I have ever seen!
The movie that has disappointed us the most so far, especially given the positive buzz, was "The Aristocrats". It was entertaining but much too long. And though I thought it would show a bunch of comics telling the same joke, they mostly just talk about how they first heard the joke and what they think of it. Much different than we expected.

Friday night - family movie night: The Goonies. This is one of those movies that many people remember fondly, but frankly is not that good of a movie. Strangely, not made better by drinking heavily, either.
Saturday night - first feature, my youngest daughter had friends over to watch "Nauscia". They reported enjoying it. My wife and I then watched "Fever Pitch", which I was surprised with - actually a pretty decent flick.
Sunday afternoon I had a rare chance for a movie on my own and watched "Constantine" which was also surprisingly good.

Wow, I can't believe this thread is still going. Its been awhile since I've added to it.

Goonies is a great movie to watch with the kids. My 18 year old daughter absolutely loved this movie as a young child so much that she brought it to college with her and showed her friends at school. Now there is a new cult following of it. All the college kids loved it. Its a dumb movie but boy does it bring back childhood memories no matter what age you are. Its just a fun movie meant to be enjoyed.
I highly recommend sitting with your young ones and watching it. Years later you'll be glad you did.

Hey, I watched "Pulp Fiction" last night for like the 50th time. Never realized how intense the ending was when Jules has the gun on "Ringo" and says, "...And Mr. 9mm here, he's the shepherd protecting my righteous ass in the valley of darkness. Or it could be you're the righteous man and I'm the shepherd and it's the world that's evil and selfish. I'd like that. But that **** ain't the truth. The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm tryin', Ringo. I'm tryin' real hard to be a shepherd." Awesome lines from that film

It's been a while since I've been in here. But I've seen lots of good movies lately - if only I could remember them all...
Last night we watched Elizabethtown - I expected a typical chick-flick, but I was surprised by the son/father element and how it personally hit me.
Over the past weeks I've also really enjoyed School of Life, My Date with Drew and Undiscovered. School of Life stars Ryan Reynolds (Van Wilder) but it's NOT a funny movie.
My Date With Drew is just plain different - it's an indy documentary about a guy who is a long-time fan of Drew Barrymore and wins $1100 on a gameshow where she's the winning answer. So he buys a video camera from Circuit City with the planned intent to return it at the end of the 30 day return period - then he uses the gameshow $$$ and the "6 degrees of separation" theory to try to get a date with Drew Barrymore WITHIN that 30 day period before he has to return the video camera back to Circuit City. This may not be for everyone, but I really enjoy documentaries and true-life video journals like this so I really liked it.

Watched "Doom". In the tradition of if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all, I'd have to say this is a film. It seems to run about 30 frames per second, and they hired actors, and most of it is in focus. I had a nice nap about 3/4 of the way through it, but woke up in time for the end so I felt I'd achieved the best of both worlds.
Watched IMAX Fighter Pilot - Operation Red Flag (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A2XB9K). The package came with DVD and a second disk with Microsoft Windows Media Video High Definition format. Even though my theater is only 90% finished, did the "unthinkable" and fired up the projector to watch "Hero". Watch it once or twice a year and the uniqueness of the movie never grows old for me. Really appreciate the balance the story, action and color that the cinematography brings.
Pretty good soundtrack as well which didn't hurt...

Home sick today, but good enough for a movie. I watched "Dark City". Very good - also got about half way through the Ebert commentary.

Another rare opportunity for a mid-week movie. I watched Gattaca. I wanted to like it, but frankly, couldn't recommend it.

Ohhh.. Randy I loved the freshness of the plot of this movie. I must admit it has been a while since I have seen it but I really admired it at the time.

I just felt that the entire film was on sedatives.
Then again, I was on sedatives myself . . . (damn kidney stones!).
Yesterday I watched "American Spender". Brilliant. Simply brilliant.
Tonight: Wallace and Grommit: Curse of the Wererabbit!

I saw "Redeye" tonight which I thought was a complete bore.
"40 year old Virgin" had some good chuckles albeit a little over the top.

Randy, I felt your pain last week as I too was stuck in Hartford... Fortunately, my hotel had pay per view movies...
Well, my wife and I are both battling a flu bug so we cancelled our out of town plans. That left us with some serious movie watching this weekend.
Friday we watched "Truth about Love" with Jennifer Love Hewett. My wife picked this one out because she thought I would tolerate it due to JLH being in it. It was obvious why this was not released in the theaters. The voice over work for Hewett was so bad that I had to convince myself it was her playing the role... I do NOT recommend it.
Saturday we watched "Must Love Dogs" and "The Amityville Horror". It was decent but I expected much more from the Diane Lane and John Cusack. I didn't like how the movie ended.
We enjoyed the Amityville Horror. It was nice to see that Ryan Reynolds can act in something besides a comedy. The movie had plenty of suspense. I have never seen the original, so I don't know how this one compares to it.
Then tonight we picked up "Hustle and Flow". I can see why Terrence Howard got such good reviews for this movie. The acting was good and the plot seemed believable. It was on the line of 8 Mile, but IMO, a better movie. I highly recommend it.
