Watched a couple of movies last night:

Lord of War - Better than I expected. PQ was pretty bad for this recent of a DVD release though. The transfer did not look great IMO. The movie was great I thought and the DTS ES sounded nice although this isn't a big surround movie. Very interesting look into the gun running business and I thought Cage was excellent in this roll. There were some great lines only he could pull off in his quirky style of delivery. My favorite line as he was being detained at the airport as the ATF agents were taking him into custody:

ATF Agent - "I'm from the bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. Will you come with me"

Cage - "I have a feeling this isn't about the alcohol or the tobacco"
Classic!!!!

The other was Kingdom of Heaven. This movie never really appealed to me for some reason. Lets just say the Crusades weren't a great time in history so maybe that is why. I enjoyed the movie though. Great action and battle scenes and I thought the story telling was also very good and they didn't take sides as to who was right and who was wrong. Both sides were equally wrong.

On another note...I received my Animusic II DVD in the mail yesterday. For those of you who have never heard of Animusic or don't own this DVD. Get it!!! Or at least check out their website, although the videos won't do the DVD justice. This will easily be my demo material for showing off the HT. Picture is excellent and the 5.1 audio mix really fills the room with sound. The music is great as well.

I saw a clip from Animusic recently. Their DVDs seem a touch expensive for what you get, and the computer synth rock gets old fast, but their "Pipe Dream" piece is simply amazing. You can see a low res clip of it at: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5503582578132361295

Watched "Night Watch" the other day. I can't really recommend it. It is subject to more hype than it deserves given its gaps and inconsistencies.

At $19.99 it's a bargain IMO. I'd gladly pay more now that I have it. To each their own I guess. I wouldn't listen to the audio on it's own in my car per say, it's the illusion of the animation seemingly creating the music that is amazing. Plus the music is great. Sort of Alan Parsons'ish. I couldn't turn it off plus my kids will love it.

Yes folks, I actually watched Pee-Wee's Big Adventure last night, on DTS/EX and a 10 foot screen. It is the soul reason I even build my HT room.

NOT! :D Absolutely kidding. . .

I havn't watched that movie in 15 years, so I watched it with my kids. It actually still holds up today, though some of the stop motion animation is pretty crude. . well. . .very crude. But my kids got a kick out of it, and its a surprisingly good transfer and movie to watch on the big screen. If you havn't seen it in a while, you should slap it in again. . . no, it won't be the best demo DVD, that is for sure, but there are some good laughs still in this 20 year old film. :)

Weekly wrap up...

Pitch Black (HD-DVD): I haven't seen this movie is a while and I forgot how much I liked it. Picture quality is awesome. 3 out of 5 stars.

Chronicles of Riddick (HD-DVD): I remember being suprised at how much I liked this movie the first time I watched it. This time not so much. At times I found I was laughing at the movie not with it. Picture is one of the best I've seen. While Pitch Black is a better movie, I still think Riddick is better than average. 3 out of 5 stars.

Running Scared (DVD): My expectations for this movie were low. To say I was surprised by this movie is an understatement. It's pretty good. I found myself enthralled in the story. There is only one moment that I can remember thinking "Come on, that's just ridicules." Without spoiling anything it has to do with hockey pucks. Transfer was good. Picture and sound were on par with current DVD releases. 3 out of 5 stars. Extremely violent. Lots of bad language.

Tristan and Isolde (DVD): I had low expectations for this flick as well. Watched this with the wife and daughter Sunday night. It's another decent transfer. Not a lot of surround activity. For me the movie bogged down a little at about 3/4 of the way through. At 2 hrs I found it a little long. Would have been better at 1.5 hrs. Still, better then average. 3 out of 5 stars.

Enter the Dragon (HD-DVD): It's been posted on this site that this title suffers from the 1080i bobbed master issue that a few Warner titles are afflicted with. I had to admit if I didn't read it here, I would never have known. It looks fantastic. It's also a fantastic movie. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

It has been scorching here so we had another family over for an afternoon showing of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". It brought back a lot of memories and the special effects hold up surprisingly well.

Also watched the live-action "Madeline". I had never seen it but it was very well done. Very true to the books but with changes that were logical and helped the plot. Well received by all.

Last night the wife and I finally got around to watching "A.I. Artificial Intelligence". I have had it in my library, it seems like, was shortly after it came out. I heard that a lot of people did not care for this movie, but I found it one of those movies that provide a strong message, and from what I got from this one was what the possibilities could be from man playing God.

On 1 to 5 star rating, I give this one a 4.

BTW, it was also damm hot here in the Phoenix area. It has been ranging in the past week from 110 to 117.

I watched Rob Roy the other day. I love this movie and I've seen it several times. On the other hand, this is one of the worst transfers I've seen. The picture quality when compared to other DVDs is absolutely dismal. This is one movie that deserves a new transfer or the HD treatment. PQ 1 out of 5. Movie 3.5 out of 5.

Watched "Loggerheads" last night.

Didn't realize that it centered around a gay character, and thought we were going to have "Brokeback Turtle" for a minute. However.........

This ended up being a very tastefully done movie that really tugged at my emotions. The real heart of the plot was of a mother's instinctual love to be near her child.

The pace is slow, but necessary, to give the feel of the small southern towns that it takes place in.

Highly recommended. 4 of 5.

16 Blocks was a disappointment. I like Mos Def. He has played good parts in Italian Job and a few others but the accent he had was like nails on a chalkboard. Just brutal. Pains me to watch Bruce Willis get so VERY old. Cop out plotlines ran throughout.

Underworld Evolution was not nearly as bad as everyone mad eit out to be. I generally like vampire movies and was pleasantly surprised. Kate Beckinsale is always worth the watch but you might even want to have the volume on. Only issue is that it comes STRAIGHT off the 1st one and if you haven't seen it the first 30 min wouldn't make any sense.

My wife and I watched "V for Vendetta" last night. We both agreed that it was decent. However, I have a pet peeve that the movie hit upon....

When Evey is being held prisoner, the interrogator is obviously Creedy (the actor playing that character). Then later, she/you discover that it was V in control the whole time. Are we meant to believe that it was V disguised? Voice too? Cheesy way to throw a curve IMO.

"The Grapes of Wrath"---> I can see why this had such acclaim back in 1940. It was an emotional story, and for its time, well acted.

Everytime I watch an older (1940's) movie, it sets the benchmark for just how far movie making has come. The style in the 40's seemed to be that of a theatrical play that is being filmed. The dialogue is delivered that way, and the sets are no more extravagent than you'll find in your local small theater house. We have come so far, in fact, that these items are almost overwhelmingly distracting, IMHO.

One area that I don't think we've advanced in, is the movie introduction and buildup. I really enjoyed the prologue and long title sequence. It sets the movie up as an "event", whereas todays movies seem to jump right into the action so fast.

Last night we watched "A Love Song for Bobby Long", John Travolta and Scarlett Johanson.

Being born and raised in New Orleans, I really enjoyed the setting. They did a great job of capturing the attitude of New Orleans. I knew a dozen guys that were all like Bobby Long. We were watching it with a couple from across the street that moved here from out west. They commented, "what do these people do to support themselves?" hahahaha. In that respect, the movie is pretty accurate, as it is the one place I've lived where people aren't defined by there careers. You could know somone for years and never know what they do for a living. It is truly the "Big Easy".

As usual, Hollywood never gets the accents right. They insist on making all "southerners" sound like they stepped out of "Gone with the Wind". Otherwise, a good movie with rich character development.

OK, last night my wife and I watched Just Friends with Ryan Reynolds and Amy Smart (hottie!!!!) . Yeah it was corny and predictable, but we laughed a lot during this movie. Reynolds for some reason just cracks me up. The gist is that Reynolds and Smart were "best friends" in high school and he was secretly in love with her. He was a shy fat kid but 10 yrs later he's a good looking successful hollywood record executive. He goes back to Jersey and tries to win her back and hilarity ensues. Most guys I think can relate to the "just friends" curse at some point in their life so it makes it hit home. At least I eventually married my "just friend" so there is hope :D

Sahara (HD-DVD): Great picture, not so great movie. 2.5 out of 5 stars.
Firewall (HD-DVD): Somewhat silly and predictable. 2.5 out of 5 stars.
Taxi Driver (HD .TS File): Great movie. Robert De Niro, Cybill Shepherd, Jodie Foster, and Harvey Keitel look so incredibly young. Especially Keitel and Foster. 4 out of 5 stars.
Payback (HD .TS File): I like this movie. It's violent and gritty like no other Mel Gibson movie. Lucy Liu, Maria Bello, Deborah Kara Unger do a pretty good job as eye candy. 3 out of 5 stars.
Lost in Translation (HD .TS File): I skipped this movie do to a unflattering review from a friend. I watched it the other night and really liked it. Bill Murray is a joy to watch in this movie. The interaction between the characters played by Murray and Johansson is fantastic. For me there is a very fine line between art and entertainment. Too much either way and quality begins to suffer. This movie walks that line very well. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Star Wars was a success. It was the first time I had people over to watch an entire movie. Episode IV really isn't the greatest movie to show off a system. People are just shocked at the screen. One guy actually had never seen Star Wars at the theater and he kept commenting on details he had never seen before when watching on a regular tv. He was ready for an all nighter to watch all the other movies! His wife wasn't. :)

Next Saturday we are having a 2pm matinee of The Empire Strikes Back. We'll move onto Episode 1 and 2 during the following weeks. I hope to have the final showing be a double feature of Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi sometime in September. Sith will start at 10am and will be featured in HiDef! We'll then have a lunch cook out around 12:30 and start Jedi around 2pm. Should be a great way to wrap up the series.

Unfortunately I'm running out of seats (I have 8) and if everyone shows up I won't be able to watch the movies! It may be time to open another theater! :)

Last night I watched "A Simple Plan" (1998) starring Bill Paxton and Billy Bob Thornton.

This is one EXCELLENT movie, however it provides a strong message to a scary part that dwells within us all and how we perceive our friends, love ones and ourselves, but only to find out that we all have a darker side that surfaces from a deep part of us that only shows it’s self during times of overwhelming greed. It then takes control over who we were and then destroys our lives leaving to whom we were lost forever and never truly knowing and trusting ourselves or love ones again. We can never again look the same at our friends, family, and ourselves, without seeing the dark side of evil that lurks within us all.

This movie provides a scary message, but is a necessary message to show us all that our ship will not arrive on a silver platter, but needs to be built with effort and support by family and friends. By understanding this, only then can we keep evil at bay and under control, because as sure as there is good within us all, there is also evil lurking as a sign of glistening gold that will only kick us in the balls as soon as we reach out and grab onto it.

This movie is about a found duffel bag of money, and 4 good souls, and what it does to them. I have always considered myself as one of the most honest people I know. I will go out of my way to point out an error that would have left me with extra money, but then again would I have been tempted to keep a large bag of found money, money that I could have convinced myself was nothing more then dirty drug money that no one would ever miss, maybe, but not after watching this movie!

On a 1 to 5 star rating I gave this movie 4 stars and 5 stars for the excellent way it provides that scary message.

BTW, Billy Bob Thornton is at his best in this movie and really does prove what an excellent actor he is.

My son wanted to have a Star Wars movie night last weekend, so we invited some of his friends and their dads over for Ep. IV. Though it was a successful event, people are right that Ep. IV is not the best movie to show off your HT.

And be careful of showing the episodes in the order Lucas now prefers: I-VI. We showed Eps. III and IV back to back when Ep. III came out on DVD to see how they transitioned and boy, was that a mistake. Ep. III has good lightsaber and blaster effects, active fights, and well trained stormtroopers. Ep. IV has bad lightsaber and blaster effects, very sedate fights with none of the flips, etc. in Eps. I-III, and keystone cops stormtroopers who don't even know enough to look before entering a room or to duck now and then in the middle of a battle (and that does not even count the many script inconsistencies or the fact that, in my opinion, only Eps. IV-VI are okay for little kids). So, be careful of what order you show then in if you are holding some Star Wars marathon of your own.

As to other recent movies, saw Stalingrad and Shaolin Soccer. Stalingrad has a good script and acting but lacks the surround sound of more recent WWII movies and, while still good, would have been much better with more immersive sound. Shaolin Soccer was fun, but not as fun as Kung Fu Hustle. The movie has both an American Theatrical version and an Original Chinese Version. We watched the Original Version so I don't know how the American Version compares, but the English subtitles were awful and often read like the instruction books that come with some products from the Far East. The apparently funny outtakes at the end of the movie don't have any subtitles at all.

For the last few nights my wife and I had been trying to power through the Firefly series on DVD. We both really like it so far which is saying something because my wife HATES SciFi including Star Wars and I'm not a big SciFi fan either. She says she can't relate to talking robots and aliens. Fortunately Firefly has neither. Great characters and it's quirky which she likes. We'll finish up with Serenity of course which is actually what got me into the series. I would recommend this to anyone.

Walk the Line. Enjoyed it more than expected (not a Johnny Cash or country music fan). Really were great performances by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. Actually piqued my interest in Cash's music. Will definitely remind one of Ray.

If you try Cash's music, try some of the newer versions with Rick Rubin as a producer. Johnny does U2 and others (and the U2 song Johnny does is much, much better in my opinion than the original U2 song).

I haven't posted here in awhile, well a long while at that, but last weekend we watched Inside Man and V for Vendetta. Both movies were very good and definitely worth watching. I was particulary intrigued with Inside Man b/c of how the story unfolds. V for Vendetta was enjoyable and for the longest time I was trying to figure out who's voice was V then it hit me like a ton of bricks, Hugo Weaving of Matrix and LOTR movies (I didn't recognize it at first).

We had friends over for "Saw" last night. We don't often do horror, but it is fun when you have a big group.

I was expecting a shallow slasher movie, ala "Friday the 13th", etc. Instead, this was a thought provoking plot with a few nice twists. I'm not saying it was award winning, just better than expected.

As far as the slasher aspect, it was no worse than "Silence of the Lambs".

Enjoyed it.

Eight Below (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F4PDFI)
Good film. I can see this being enjoyed by a wide audience. If you liked march of the penguins you should love this film. Some will say the dogs are better actors than the humans. This is intended to be an emotionally heart-wrenching saga that has left true dog lovers wiping their eyes. The movie is clean and is recommended for children, but parents should be prepared for some emotional episodes with children who may have difficulty dealing the harsh realities of this movie.

One thing I was hoping for in the special features that I didn't see was from back when the movie first came to theatres there was a commercial or making-of or something with the eight dogs sitting in lounge chairs on their backs drinking pina coladas and laughing and chatting about their experiences making the film (yes, the dogs).

Also watched Poseidon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GTLQXU). OK film. One slightly modernized theme, but the rest seemed to me as if you wrote down 10 points that you can remember from the original movie, well they did those ten. The 1972 original (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EHSVNW) was better.

My mother in law raved about this movie. She and my father in law were big into RV's for a long time. That may have something to do with it. Robin Williams was pretty good. now that Im using my Panny AE900 BB card for 40 free rentals I've been recklessly renting.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - A detective sleuth comedy that for me was very funny and worth watching again.

Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick - Both pretty good; liked Riddick better for the cinematography and sound.

The Matador - watchable but ultimately not that good.

Pride and Prejudice - actually pretty good for a movie focused on the pursuit of love. Penty of banter between man and distresed damsel

Iron Giant - well done, great drawings and good sound.

RV - as stated earlier a good family movie with little offensive content.

wow.

Just watched Short Circuit the other day, and boy did that bring me back. The DVD in itself is pretty horrible. poor transfer, lackluster menus and absolutely NO special features. but my sons, have now officially seen a fairly iconic character of the late 80's.

even though so much is CGI, looking at the animatronics for Number 5, I was still really impressed. Plus, he was designed by Syd Mead, so even 20 years later, the robot design still looks great.

I have to put in another good word for Elling. I saw it recently and, if I had to compare it to anything, I'd say The Odd Couple is a good choice (though Elling is darker and probably a fairly realistic look at what it is like to transition to the real world from an institution). Comparing it to Dumb and Dumber is an insult (though I assume it was a joke).

In the special features the director comments that the movie was essentially based on real time. Knowing that gives an entierly new perspective on the events, how they played out, how long it takes to understand a situation and how long it takes to react to a situation.

Speaking of good sci-fi, I had been away from it for a while (unless you count Lost on ABC), but I recently got hooked on the new Battlestar Galactica. People had told me for a while that it was really good, but I couldn't shake the campy 70s version of it out of my head. Well, the mini-series rocked. I have actually been trying to satisfy my BSG cravings by watching some season 2 reruns on Universal HD, so unfortunately I have some spoilers, but watching it in HD is pretty awesome...

Occasionally I've been watching Deadwood (http://www.hbo.com/deadwood/) because there are a couple of things that are good about it, but I just can't get past the foul language to actually enjoy it. I certainly don't care if I miss an episode or 10.
My grade 9 french teacher taught us that colourful words were used to punctuate extreme emotion, and could and should be used like that. But Deadwood takes unreasonable liberties with George Carlin's "seven words you can never say on television" IMO.
"When comedian George Carlin made a record discussing, among other things, "The seven words you can never say on television," WBAI radio (New York) played the record, and received a fine so heavy that, although the incident occurred in 1973, WBAI, recently announced (1990) that they have not yet paid all their " (http://www.deepleafproductions.com/wilsonlibrary/texts/raw-carlin.html)

Anyway, what I've been enjoying instead is The Persuaders!, Set 1 (1971) (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000DC14E).
Between heroic spells as the Saint and James Bond, Roger Moore was teamed with Tony Curtis in The Persuaders, a derivative but fun series about a couple of millionaire dilettante adventurers who swan around the world competing for the attention of beautiful women and getting involved in perplexing mysteries. Moore is Lord Brett Sinclair, an upper crust Brit of impeccable breeding, while Curtis is Danny Wilde, an up-from-the-streets self-made millionare. With witty dialogue, fast paced scripts directed by Roy Ward Baker, the series was fun from beginning to end. They are somewhat hammy but this series has a charm. They have on location adventures in some of the most fascinating places in 1960's Europe.
Lots of action, mostly fisticuffs. The occasional pistol fight is marked with a lot of missing (hitting walls) and occasionally someone being shot in an arm. No foul language at all. Everyone's civil, even when kidnapped or kidnapper.
Interesting 60's sexism. When women end up in group fights, a lot of the time a man picks her up and puts her in a box (laundry hamper, closet, whatever) to be safe until the men's fight is over. No man to woman violence, it just isn't done you know. On the other hand, there's fanny tapping, and a scene where a man needs an extra $20 to pay for a cab so he reaches into the bra of a receptionist who never stops doing her nails and certainly doesn't complain.
Plenty of action and entertainment, that leaves you feeling good, and none of the "JackBower24" terrorism.

Firefly on Universal HD starting September 24 at 6:00pm and 10:00pm. They will play through the whole season (including the missing episodes) in the correct order every Sunday night.

Set your Tivos and DVRs and tell your friends that have not discovered this great show!

ooh that it a good question that I would like to hear answered as well. My wife HATES SciFi. She never had anything to do with Star Wars or basically anything containing robots that talk or aliens. That bing said, she LOVED Firefly. So much she was very bummed after we finished the 14 episodes on the DVD. I would like to hear more on the WAF.

it will be tough...I can't get a lot of my non-SciFi friends to watch it simply because of the name....i explained that the story and characters are what make it so great, not that it takes place in Space...I dunno, some people just have an immediate adversion to things they consider "geeky" and "nerdy"....I was under the same impression until I watched the mini-series and fell in love with the show....its absolutely amazing what they do...

Actually, Battlestar is VERY wife friendly. I have several friends who's wifes "hate scifi" but love it. Just tell the wife, "yes, it's set in space, but it's about sex, religion, politics and family."

The kids and I just finished watching Hoodwinked. They like it a lot. I LOVED it. Very clever and funny and I liked the voice talent in this one. Patrick Warburton is always funny in whatever he does. The grown-ups who watch this will laugh at completely different things than the kids will. This is definitely one to add to the DVD collection whether or not you have kids.

Well, I enjoyed Firefly, but that show relied more on humor and a contrived situation that continually had the show winking at you "hey, we're cowboys in SPACE!".

Battlestar plays as deadly serious drama. And man, do they pack story in each episode.

Last night the wife and I watched "The Wedding Crashers" - I had avoided it because I really don't care for most "bad taste comedies", but I heard a terrific interview with the writers and decided to give it a chance. It was pretty funny and although long for a comedy, worthwhile.

LOVE that movie!! I've gotten to the point that if Vince Vaughn is in it, I'm in. That guy is just pure funny. You should also check out Dodgeball if you haven't already. Not quite the "bad taste comedy". Quite a bit sillier, but also very funny.

I watched Poseidon last night. I liked it. Lets just say that there are movies that I wouldn't even consider on my old 26" TV setup that I will watch in my new theater. Somehow on a 118" screen with 7.1 surround and a kick a$$ sub certain movies become tolerable. This was one of them. Great workout for the surrounds with lots of neat creaking and moaning of the capsized ship as it takes on more water. The special effects were fun to watch as well and the scene where the wave hits was well done. Violence was a little over the top however in some scenes.

Watched 'Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World' with Albert Brooks last night. I must say, a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Absolutely funny.

Albert Brooks actually plays himself in this movie. Because of his background in comedy, he's asked by the U.S. government to head up a month long project to study what makes Muslims laugh in order to better understand them. Most of the movie takes place in India and makes use of some nice outdoor shots. Several comments are made of his voice acting in 'Finding Nemo'.

My only complaint is that the ending felt kinda contrived.

Really recommend this one to watch.

Only bonuses are a couple of deleted scenes (including one with a New Yorker driving a cab in India since all the cab jobs in New York are taken over by Indians.)

Watched The Final Cut with Robin Williams. I honestly thought it would be more of a Cloak and Dagger--espionage type movie dealing with some sort of crime, but it wasn't. I was a little disappointed, but it wasn't the worse movie I've seen (that distinction would have to go to Miss Congeniality 2 which I never finished watching with the wife--movie made me dumber, seriously).

Finally got Season 1 of BSG (after watching the miniseries) and fired up Episode 1 ("33") last night. My wife was trying to take care of something in the other room, and had a view of the screen--eventually said, "Forget it, I have to sit down and watch this." She loved it (as did I). Steve - Sci-fi is running a marthon of season 2 of BSG today, and some more on 10/6. The PQ is iffy, but you may want to spark the DVR up if you want to skip buying the season 2.0 + 2.5 dvd's.

We really warmed up to the show towards the end of season one, and in the episodes we've seen so far of the S2 reruns (almost caught up).

Been sick since saturday. So, with a heavy dose of football I did a few movies as well.

Lucky Number Slevin (DVD) - Good story. With the possible exception of some scenes with Ben Kingsly, it's well acted all the way around and Lucy Liu is adorable. Sound and picture are good considering the source. Except for one utterly preposterous part concerning a baseball, the movie, for the most part, made me overlook the small stuff and allowed me to simply enjoy. I'd recommend it to anyone that likes the crime genre, dark comedy, film noir, violence, etc. This is good stuff. When it's available on HD-DVD I'll buy it for sure. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Broken Trail (DVD) - I only watched part 1 as I didn't know it was a two disc set and didn't order the second disc from Blockbuster Online. Suffice it to say, part 2 is on the way. I liked what I've seen so far and hunger for more. Robert Duvall is one of my favorite actors and he is wonderful in this movie. The other dude (Thomas Haden Church) is pretty good too. Fans of the Western and/or Duvall might want to check out this AMC original production. Picture in less then stellar. Ringing and mosquito noise plague this transfer. Sound is adequate but nothing to write home about. No rating. Viewing incomplete.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (DVD) - What a strange and delightful movie. It's written by Charlie Kaufman who also wrote the very strange but very good movies Adaptation and Being John Malkovich. There isn't too much to say other than it's well acted, well written, and well made. 3.5 stars out of 5.

Watched: Hard Candy.
A suspenseful, psychological thriller with an intense and suffocating atmosphere.
The acting is simply, superb! Ellen Page is outstanding!
The camera work was cleverly claustrophobic and the use of colour, beautiful.

This movie WILL work on your emotions. I wasn’t sure if this guy was the real pedophile monster or if this girl was just a psycho little bitch. The movie leaves many questions unanswered.....and people feeling very uneasy.....as it was intended to. It was meant to promote a re-evaluation of your own morals, and just get you thinking.
Great stuff, an emotional rollercoaster. Loved it. -j

"Napoleon Dynamite" Sat in the back of the room and watched when my kid had some friends over (aged 12+/-). Now I know where "vote for Pedro" came from. Possibly the dumbest movie I have ever watched. Not sure why I watched it all the way through. The kids seemed to think it was great and were always laughing.

Is this movie the "Monty Python and the Holly Grail" of this generation?

I watched two movies in the last couple of days I picked up on the weekend at HMV 2 for $20.

Apollo 13 Anniversary Edition - Boy did I forget how great of a movie this was. I hadn't seen it since the theatre, so it was really fresh. The casting was fantastic, Bill Paxton and Tom Hanks are two of my favs, and adding in Bacon, Sinise and Burns really made it special. Definitely glad I bought this one!

The Ring - Doesn't matter how many times I've seen this (probably about 5) I love it each time. Just gets the chills going, and when she finally comes out of the tv, I lose my breath. I'm a huge horror fan, and this one will always stand out for me. I just love the hues, angles, and the music!

Friday night: The wife picked "Flight Plan" both depressing AND implausible. Meh.

Saturday night: "Match Point" Wow. This is a terrific film and the less I say about it, the better. If I hadn't seen that Woody Allen wast the director I would have never guessed. This film has it's own pacing, but if you give it time it pays off.

Fantastic 4 on HBOHD. Kinda stunk. I didn't really hate the bad guy nor feel very drawn to the good guys. Nothing special about the soundtrack or CGI either. Other comic book movies blow it away IMO (e.g. Xmen, Spiderman, etc). Only 'good' about the movie was Jessica Alba as eye candy.

I am the same way. I think 95% of SciFi is lame and never once watched the SciFi channel with the exception of a cheesy 80s horror flic. I also have an issue with anyone spending more than 3 seconds debating whether or not Cptn. Picard is truly superior to Cptn. Kirk. I watched the first episode of "Heroes" last week on TIVO. Got to admit, ended it with an "eh" crossing my lips. Gonna give it one more episode before I make my final decision.

This weekend, with the wife and kids away visiting her sister, I sat down to watch "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut" and "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls." Best Buy had SP on sale last week and I'd bought AV:WNC as part of the two-pack that was released a couple weeks ago. I needed a good laugh, and both provided plenty.

Tonight I'm watching "Thank You For Smoking." Heard nothing but good reviews for it.

We just watched "Inside Man" last week. I'll have to offer a variation on the above comment. Yes, it was good, but not very good.

As great as Denzel is, I'm getting tired of the typecast that he chooses. How many times has he been the tough guy in law enforcement? It's so predictable.

Ghosts was a bit wierd and unbelievable but entertaining. Kind of glad it was short. I thought wedding crashers was very funny and enjoyed it very much, especially with a group. Add in beer and pizza and it didn't really matter what we watched but was a lot of fun.

Just finished the Firefly series. Really wish there were more episodes. Very enjoyable. The extras at the end were worth watching. Many times listening to a cast talk is a letdown, frequently the self satisfaction and self importance felt by the actors really comes through. This cast presents as a group of actors not over impressed with what they each did but what the project was. Refreshing, comes through in the performance.

All in all not a bad movie. They did a good job on the remake and it had a few good shocks the original didn't have. It more or less followed the original scene for scene and the performances were really good.

The wife and I watched Click last night. I was surprised that there is more depth to Click than I expected. Generally, I had the movie pegged before seeing it but I expected it to be much more shallow and it gets a lot darker than I anticipated.

The movie is essentially a Harry Chapin song with a remote control as the MacGuffin. It's a pretty well done film and Kate Beckinsale in a Supfriends t-shirt and jammies at least 1/2 the time is always a winner. Click is certainly an above average movie. 3 out of 5 stars.

I have to agree about CLICK, I had no idea that is was going to be that deep, I thought it would be straight comedy..I really enjoyed that.

I love I mean I LOVE - MONSTER HOUSE...bought it yesterday and am watching it at the moment, hopefully tomorrow, I will get my not only my Mits 3000U but also my screen to set it up again and watch it AGAIN..my kids loved it too - of course though 11 and 13 - will do it for them...

Yeah Monster House was great! Watched it over the weekend.

What surprised me was how good it sounded. Lotsa low end rumbling and explosions. The creeky old house sounds in the surrounds were cool.

As mentioned in my previous post, I was working on the Band of Brothers miniseries. Finished watching the final two episodes last night. Man, I can not recommend this box set enough. If you can still rent it, do so. You won't regret it.

Just finished watching Mission Impossible III. Very good movie. Filmed with kind of a gritty texture.

Now I'll have to go back and watch the rest of the movies in the three pack.

IMHYO I think you will be disappointed. MI3 was by far the best of the trilogy.

Watched MI3 last night and enjoyed it very much. This was the best of the Mission Impossible series and made the other 2 seem a little boring. I like how this one (to me) was non-stop action and it told the story great.

OK...I know I'm a little behind the times on this one, but Saturday night my wife finally convinced me to watch Love Actually with her. For some reason I have avoided it up til now. She fell asleep in the middle so I ended up watching it by myself and you know what....I'd watch it again. It was very funny and heart warming at the same time. Great date movie for sure. See this one if you haven't already.

We watched "Saints & Soldiers" Tuesday night. I'd give it 3.5/5 stars. It had a pretty good story that was based on true events however it felt slow on occasion. IMO, it needed an extra "mini-mission" before completion of the main objective. I'd watch it again but not for a year or so...

Since my wife doesn't care for anime, I watched "Final Fantasy: Advent Children" by myself. The story kinda sucked. I've played the video game that the movie is based on however it's been a few years. For anyone unfamiliar with the material, this movie doesn't do a good job of filling you in. I found myself just watching the movie for the visual spectacle. The computer animation is top notch. Skin textures were very soft in this film and appeared much better in the first Final Fantasy movie, however scenery and environmental textures were much improved. There were several fight scenes that would be perfect to demo your HT for guests. Pixar's "Cars" should arive today from Netflix... the whole family is looking forward to it.

Watched Da Vinci Code (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005JOC9/). Some good spots. A lot of silly plot twists. 3 out of 5.

Watched An Inconvenient Truth (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ICL3KG/), with vice-president Al Gore talking about global warming. This was really entertaining. 5 out of 5. It comes in an environmentally friendly case too. Yes it's got a hugely strong bias. No mention that Mars is getting warmer too for example (for the other hand, have a look at point 13 here (http://www.realclimate.org/index.php?p=192)). Nevertheless I rather enjoyed the film. The movie was done in 2005, the special feature followup was done in 2006.
BTW, I liked the way his 45 foot wide 2.35:1 screen got taller when at one end when something interesting happened there.

Last night after the OSU vs. Michigan game (GO BUCKS!), the wife and I watched "Bad Santa" - actually "Badder Santa."

I don't know who told me this was a terrific comedy, but whoever it was owes me the cost of this DVD. Man, this movie sucked. I should have known better after watching "The Ice Harvest" that any holiday black comedy with Billy Bob Thorton would be painful.

Do yourself a favor. Skip this one.

I had never really paid any attention to it til last night when I watched - the time when DeNiro is standing next to the secret service guy, and tells this guy his name..."henry krinkle". Funny aS HELL!!

Agent: Look, uh, if you're really interested, if you give me your name and address, we'll send you all the information on how to apply. How's that?
Travis: You will?
Agent: Sure. (The agent takes out a notepad.)
Travis: OK. Why not? My name is Henry Krinkle. K-R-I-N-K-L-E. 154 Hopper Avenue.
Agent: Hopper?
Travis: Yeah. You know like a rabbit, hip, hop. Ha, ha. Fair Lawn, New Jersey.
Agent: Is there a zip code to that Henry?
Travis: Yeah, 610452. OK?
Agent: That's, uh, six digits.
Travis: Oh, well 61045.
Agent: OK.
Travis: I was thinking of my telephone number.

Watched An Evening With Kevin Smith 2 - Evening Harder (2006) (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000I0QLOQ/). Overall, not worth the time.
The first one was a riot (good) (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00007149S), but the remake, not so much.

Here's a brief education in the movie business: Theatrical release of any movie doens't really ******* matter. Essentially, now, in the days of DVD, and you know revenue streams that continue going along after the theatrical life of a film, the theatrical is one big commercial for your DVD release. Because theatrical box office the studio doesn't even take a 100 percent of it. They only take like 45 percent because the exhibitors get the rest. And sometimes they have to split up the back end of a feature as well with you know some stars who were involved or whatever. So theatrical life it doesn't matter. I mean the more you make at the box office great. It just means that there's more interest on DVD. But ultimately the real money is in DVD.

Watched Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005JP0F) A few scenes are a bit nasty for kids, which is a shame. Worth the purchase price, at least to me.

It's that same musical score you remember from The Rock and Gladiator.

BTW, there's a little extra plot after the credits.

Space channel ran a list of top ten special effects, and I've been watching them from ten to six thus far:
1) 2001: A Space Odyssey
2) Star Wars IV A New Hope
3) Jurasic Park
4) King Kong 1933
5) Lord of the Rings the Two Towers
6) Jason and the Argonauts
7) Terminator 2
8) Forbidden Planet
9) Last Starfighter
10) Matrix

Lots of movies so far this weekend:

Wednesday night: King Kong (HD): Looked glorious, movie was awful-- Jackson should have trimmed at least an hour out of it.

Thursday matinee: Cars (SD): A great movie. Looked fantastic for an SD disk. Great sound and story. Clearly the Pixar guys have true affection for motor sports.

Friday night: Batman Begins (HD): Also a great movie. Dark scenes really showed off the contrast on my Ruby. Can't wait for the sequel.

We will do one more tonight, not sure what it will be yet.

Hey all AVS home builders! There is a theater that is being rebuilt into a dinner theater here in Lexington, KY. They are throwing away all the remaining seats (couple three hundred maybe). They are medium purple still many good sets but some broken. They are trashing whats left on Monday! If you can make it here tomorrow you can have your pick!

Used to be the Movies 8 off of Richmond Rd. here in Lexington. Its near the Krogers.

I've already got some for my little project (I needed 6 good seats to squeeze into my room).

I hate to see so many of these go into the trash, good luck.

PS - My wife and I finally got some Berkline 090's (4) for the back row and now we can have some theater seats for the front row for free. Even got some brand new parts and all new fabric for them.

PPS - I would have posted this sooner but we just saw them sitting in the lot today, sorry about the late notice.

Last night King Kong on HDDVD with my three little boys. Just an incredible presentation . I've seen it in the commercial theater, at a friends house on DVD on his three chip DLP and now in my theater. This disc really is a must have despite the fact that they could have shortened the film a little I think.

There are some scenes in this movie that are simply as visually engaging as anything I've ever seen anywhere......... ever !

What are your impressions on how the PS3 does on Blu-Ray playback? What type of projector/TV do you have?

I have an "older" Pioneer Elite Pro 710HD - component only AND 1080i. I had to use this -
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Monster-Component-Digital-A-V-Kit-for-PlayStation-3/sem/rpsm/oid/166290/catOid/-16762/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do
to get component to HDMI to work. I have OTA HD as well as cable HD (OTA is SO way better!) and IMHO the Blu-Ray PS3 was equally as clear as OTA HD. My Elite was also recently cleaned and calibrated.

I can only imagine how incredible 1080p + HDMI would be for this!

I did too. I was wondering how they'd manage the pacing for the first half of the movie, considering how the book goes. The only thing I felt was rushed was the opening sequence when they're in the louvre.

Now I'm REALLY curious how they'll pull off Angels and Demons.

What did you think of the PQ of Superman? I had to tweak every setting on my projector to get the image to look semi-decent.

You found "Layer Cake" disappointing?! Oh man, I love that movie. And Craig is awesome in it.

I'm now rewatching the "Kill Bill" movies. Not a huge Uma fan (just don't see what some guys think is so great about her, she's kinda gangly), but love those two flicks.

The PQ for Superman Returns was good - but remember, Singer was paying tribute Donner's original vision for Superman in 1979. It is an intentionally soft pic.

As to Layer Cake, I like Craig and after watching the new Bond was interested in seeing more, but I thought the sound quality and mix was one of the worst I've heard in years (not the accents, I can deal with that, but the sound balance). That, and the film was populated with almost universally repugnant characters in a world of capricious events. Not my cup of tea.

I'm with you on Uma, but Quentin is pretty much obsessed with her (and her feet) and she does really well in the film admittedly.

It's funny you posted this though because I was watching Jackie Brown last night and was wondering how well Bridget Fonda would've done in Kill Bill instead of Uma. Bridget's definitely hotter (to me at least) and she's done action before (the US version of La Femme Nikita).

Watched "Joyeux Noël" last week. A good Christmas season movie about the spontaneous truce that occured during the first Chritmas of World War I. The movie involved surprisingly little violence and virtually no bloodshed. And while it had some minor flaws, it is an interesting movie and worth watching. It is certainly more up-beat than "A Midnight Clear".

I've been going through a lot of "new to me" HD DVD movies lately....

Most recently:

Firewall - not horrible but some absolutely ridiculous technical leaps...C+
Lakehouse - Some clever elements. Sandra can surely act circles around Keanu...C.
Assault on Precinct 13 - Decent. C
Four Brothers - Not bad. Corny ending though...C
Terminator 3 - My God, what a stinker. D-

Superman Returns and Miami Vice are next on the list. I have high hopes for them....

The wife and I watched Miami Vice Friday night on HD DVD. Maybe I had low expectations due to the less than stellar reviews, but I liked it. It's not a great movie but it certainly doesn't suck. The movie has a sometimes very grainy look to it. HD DVD seems to recreate the picture faithfully and the DD+ soundtrack sounds pretty good. 3 out of 5 stars.

Almost forgot... I watched "To Have and Have Not" late last night on DVD. I'm not sure I can say anything about this movie that hasn't already been said ...seems like you're watching Bogart and Bacall fall in love for real, Hawks takes Hemingway's worst and make a great movie, etc.

Bacall is mezmorizing even by today's standards. She's a physically attractive woman (really just a kid in this movie) but what's so striking is the way she acts. Few woman can achieve the sex apeal Bacall exudes in this movie. She plays this part to perfection. The play between her and Bogart is magic.

Borgat himself is fantasic as the hero who doesn't want to get involved but dives in head deep when he's needed. He's cool under fire from the Nazi's and from beautiful women.

This is a GREAT movie. 4.5 out of 5 stars.
