First up me and the family watched Wild Hogs .Hard to see these stars getting older. It was passable and funny in a corny way. When the theater breaks out in laughter it helps me laugh. My wife and family love corny humor .
Then I watched a family movie "The Ultimate Gift" this was a real treat ! It was recommended by netflix for me and I had never heard of it.A very touching sweet movie !For a made for TV like movie it was really good !
Lastly to fill out the triple header I watched Dawn of the dead again.I rented the HD DVD version this time.Same movie ha ha just a slightly better image. Johnathan

I have been spending more time than usual in my theater room since I will no longer have it at the end of the month. We are moving to Nashville for a job transfer and the new place will not allow me to run a projector.....sigh...
Anyways, this weekend I checked out some older flicks... Heat, Con-Air and The Rock..
The Rock looked fantastic and it might have to do with it being the Crit. edition....
Con-Air - good transfer and a corny classic in my mind! "I said put the bunny back"...
Heat - I bought the original DVD release many years ago and this was the first time I had sat down and watched it since I saw it in on VHS down in my parents basement on a 27" TV! The picture quality was pretty bad and the sound was just okay. The bank robbery scene sounded the best!

Sorry to hear you are having to give up your theater ! You never know what the future holds . It may be the best thing that could happen for you. Having just finished my theater a few months ago I would hate to leave it. Good luck to you.
By the way I like Con Air and Heat ! Johnathan

That's what I was saying before and during my recent move. If there's a will there's a way. Even with limited space theres a way. For example: a lightweight portable projector like the Optoma H70, Elite pull-up screen, and a Yamaha sound projector paired with a small sub.

Took a break from movies and fired up a Netflix rental, "League of Gentlemen." This is a comedy from the BBC that revolves around the goings-on in a fictitious small community in England. All the main characters are played by the same three guys, and it is truly a bizarre series. Kind of one of those shows where you don't know if you should continue, but can't seem to turn it off.
In other words, I think I really like it. May have to rent season 2.
I saw that show when it originally aired on BBC America. Very dark, very crude but riotously funny if you are into absolutly sick humor. I loved it!

Over the past week or so I've been watchng the season 1 of Deadwood. VERY strong laguage which should not be heard by the little ones. Western theme drama as it is. Otherwise a pretty good stoyline with excellent characters. first few episodes were better then say 5 and 6 and they have already killed off a couple of major characters. Any how I like it (3.5 / 5) and am going to rent season 2 and 3

dunno if it's been discussed here before, but 'Into The Blue' is a great little throwaway film. Stars Jessica Alba and Paul Walker. They basically spend the entire time in their swimsuits and Jessica Alba is OMFG hot in this movie. Lots of fun, some decent action, and the photography is out of this world, esp. if you like underwater photography. This is one to really push your plasma, the blues and the yellows just POP off the screen- colors are hyper-intense...

Last night we watched "The Constant Gardner". We've had this a while and I've passed over it several times - mainly because I had read the book when it was first published and found it excellent and completely depressing.
The movie is very well done - expertly told. And yes, depressing, but not so much as the book.
Recommended.

Grindhouse presents Deathproof and 300 a few nights ago. I liked Deathproof. There were a handful of really great suprises and good fun the whole time. Kurt Russel was just great. I wasn't as impressed with 300. It looked great and had a very unique style but not as much substance as I hoped for.
Deathproof - 4 out of 5
300 - 2.5 out of 5

300 was a hit because it appealed directly to those kids who love to play video games. it looks like one. i agree, it was very unique visually but pretty empty otherwise.

Watched Severance (2006) (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000SM6FM2)
I remember the commercials a few months back, where the implication was that the company decided that rather than pay severance to some of its less than stellar employees, that it would instead send them on a 'retreat' in the woods where they would be hunted and 'most-dangerous-game' killed.
Maybe there's another movie, because that's not this one, but it's similar.
This company does send a bunch of employees off on a work-weekend to a lodge in the middle of the forest, but the actual carnage is unanticipated.
As a horror/slasher film, there are some humor moments at least one of which is an eye opener, and the guy who more or less says "I know half of us have been slaughtered and in the past couple of hours all of us have narrowly avoided death and that there's an unknown super bad guy out there stalking us as we speak and contrary to SunTzu's 'with a loss of mobility comes the loss of the war' we've baracaded ourselves up here, but if you'll excuse me I'm going to go down this long dark twisty corridor all by myself to the washroom with the ground level window" comes back alive. (actually all he says is "I'll be back", and all I was thinking was "you idiot, no you won't")
The characters are mostly played to maximize the office stereotypes, a little overly so, but not so far as to be annoying.
Overall, an interesting way to spend 90 minutes, unlike some films I've seen lately.

I agree about "300". It was visually stylish but overall a bit vapid. I repeatedly found myself wishing that they had made a more factually accurate movie. It's not as if the original story needed the addition of dozens of circus freaks and hundreds of ninjas to make it exciting.

Last night I watched "V for Vendetta". On a 1 to 5 star rating I give this movie 5 stars. I rarely, and I mean rarely have ever given a move 5 stars, but this movie provides so much, in not only entertainment, but it also provides a political statement that seems to fit so will with our current administration.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone who has yet to see it!
Best Regards,
Don

I could shoot myself sometimes, but I'm not brave enough to pull the trigger.
But, I pulled the trigger on "Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer".
geeze. . .there went 16 bucks.
What a lame movie. It was instantaneously forgettable from the get go. Though it clocks in at about 90 minutes, it felt like 2 hours. Predictable, shallow, and about as bland as a rice cake.
It's shallow moving making at its best.
crap. . .just crap.
I watched Fantastic 4 last night too... I got what I expected out of it... which was nothing, but at least I only dropped $5 on the rental :)
Watched Driving Lessons (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0446687/) on the weekend, quite enjoyed it... no english subtitles mind you, which drives me nuts in a dialog heavy movie like this one.
Picked up 1408 for tonight, looking forward to it!

2.75 out of 5
not a lot of action and some weird endings??
Not a lot of action?? The car chase scene in Supremacy is among the best ever! I know people that didn't like them that much but they do have action.
I'm sure I'm about to get slammed for this, but....
I *bought* and *watched* and....*enjoyed* F4: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
Now, it's not a great movie, it's barely even a good movie, but it is fun and I have hopes that Fox eventually sh*t-cans Tim Story and gets a good director to handle any future F4 flicks, and really liked the Surfer character.
So, put me into the minority here, but I give it a 2 out of 4 for nothing more than just being mindless fun for a non-fanboy.

I got tired of waiting for Netflix to ship the HD DVD version of "Knocked Up" from my queue, so I rented it last night in SD DVD from our local Safeway DVD Play Kiosk. It was only $1.50 to rent ( 99 cents with a promo code), so it was tough to pass up. Anyhow, I was pretty disappointed and I think I laughed twice during the whole movie. I guess I just didn't get the humor, although most think this movie was hilarious. I am glad I didn't wait any longer to see it and took it off my queue.
OT: I would use the kiosk again, since it was cheap, within walking distance, and easy to use. I am considering changing my Netflix plan back to 1 out instead of the 3 I have now. I am very disappointed in the length of time it is taking me to get HD DVD rentals. When the finally do ship, it is from a state across the country which takes another 3 days to get here! The last one they shipped was from WI. They either need to buy more copies or I will simply watch new release SD rentals from the kiosk and buy the few "must have" HD DVD's. <eor>

I watched Hot Fuzz on HD-DVD the other night. I was really anxious to see this as most HD nuts say this is one of the best HD-DVDs out. It did look great and the sound was good for a comedy, but the movie wasn't quite as funny as I had hoped. It was funny, especially towards the end where it bordered on ridiculous but in a fun way. I guess all the hype sort of got my expectations to high. I was entertained however which is good. All in all an enjoyable movie and one I will probably watch again since some movies like this are actually funnier the more times you watch it. So for now I'll give it 2.75 out of 5.

Watched Next on HD-DVD last night. Not too bad. Well paced and a pleasant 90 minutes which is rare these days. Not sure what it is about Nick Cage, but I like his stuff. If you've sene this movie and remember the scenes at the Grand Canyon Havasu Pi reservation, that place is breath taking!! My wife and I took a 4 day hike down there several years ago. It's the most beautiful place I have ever scene. What made me laugh is in the movie they parked their car up top and walked for 5 minutes and they were there. No Way!!! It is a grueling all day hike of about 10 miles or you can do what the rich people do and take a heliocopter. Anyhow...it was fun to see that place in a movie.

Watched: "Surfs Up".
What can I say. Another chatty, long CGI pop culture dipstick from Dreamworks pictures.
I found it to be rather boring and long (even though it was just above an hour). I don't see the appeal of this film, even for little kids. There was so much dialogue, flying past the viewer at about 90mph, that I was surprised any kid could even keep up. Shia had some good moments with improv, but besides that, RENT ONLY.
Pixar is about the only ones to get this CGI thing right, the pop culture nuances of Dreamworks get old, stale and age a picture almost instantaneously. That's the last one I pick up from them.

Watched a weird little movie called "Fido" (http://imdb.com/title/tt0457572/) on DVD. it's a comedy about a boy and his pet zombie. Think "Lassie" meets "Dawn of the Dead". It's not perfect but is amusing enough to rent it's got a few good laughs.

It's been chaos lately, I'm lucky if I get more than 4 hours of sleep a night, so haven't watched a lot of movies lately... but...
Me and one of my roommates will only watch movies with an actor from the previous movie. Kinda nerdy, but a lot of fun. We do occasionally break the rule for HD-DVD since I don't have much control over what/when Blockbuster sends me.
Lets see how far back I can remember (we've been doing this for months). We took Star Wars to Willow (Wicket is Willow), then hit Val Kilmer for a second or third time, hit Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Blind Horizon, Top Gun, which took us to Tom Cruise. Waiting on A Few Good Men, to Vanilla Sky, to Dune (I bought that on HD DVD) via the little girl is apparently the chick in Vanilla Sky I guess.
We broke the chain a few nights ago for the best HD DVD ever of course, Forbidden Planet.

I watched Grindhouse's Planet Terror a few nights ago. It was a riot. WAY over the top gore, cheesy dialog, and ridiculous situations poking fun at all the zombie B movies from years ago. I can't wait for their next one.
During the brief sex scene where they say "Missing film reel" or something like that and suddenly more people are now at the restaurant (especially the crazy twin babysitters)...that was absolute gold!

Funny to hear someone say that "Zodiac" felt like the full 2-1/2 hours, because I thought I missed an hour of it after it was over. A great movie, great acting, and really made you think that they found the guy but just couldn't pin it on him. 5 out of 5 for me.

Transformers was definitely meant to be shown in a HT. They were showing it on the flight I was on last week and I thought "Why bother?", but put that same movie on a 120" screen with good surround...well than that's another story. Definitely this movie falls under the "good crap" category, and I mean that in the nicest way.

Definetely one to add to your "show off the LFE" theater demo DVD.....
Pretty good story IMHO, very realistic in many ways I suppose. Pretty good acting-Love or hate Owen Wilson he does play a good pilot.

Brick is one of my favorite movies. I saw something negative posted earlier and had to jump in and defend it. Joseph Gordon Levitt is turning into a GREAT actor. He carried The Lookout (another small but outstanding movie).
I just rented No End In Sight, Ratatouille, Surf's Up and Sicko. I'll update when I get the chance to watch them. I made a concerted effort not to see as many movies in the theater so I could enjoy them coming through my theater.

Flags of Our Fathers on BD
Interesting and not so interesting movie about the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. I only wished they could have told the story in a straight line instead of jumping forwards and back. I think they did this to keep people interested because the flash forwards were not that interesting.
Movie itself gets 2.5 out of 5.0
Video Quality 3.0 out of 5 for the naval scenes
Audio Quality 3.0 out of 5 for the ok panning of sound during battle not enough lfe for my taste

This was a very moving story and very well done. Carice van Houten, a Dutch actress, should really make a name for herself with this movie.
The only disappointment was having to read the subtitles...

Spiderman 3 - Is it just me or is there something lacking in this movie. Wasn't impressed at all.
Expectations are always hard to live up to.. I enjoyed Spidey 3 ok.. but I know what you mean.. wanted it to be everything...
Kids and I have watched transformers a couple times and have jumped into the good scenes several times.
Have just made it to the last few episodes of Smallville's 6th season in HDDVD after watching all of the previous seasons as well. Did all the episodes while running on the treadmill.... 40 lbs less later here I am... Only way I enjoy running, watching movies.... Dunno why but I enjoyed the entire series of smallville plots and characters. You can get the first four seasons in regular DVD for only $15 a season on sale at best buy.. or at least it was that last week.

Saw it again for the second time last night.
Ratatoullie is the latest in the Pixar movies-it has a super 2:35 format and just looks great on the big screen, even in standard def. I don't have HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.....Yet!!! The Oppo 981 does a FB job though.
One thing;I actually saw it three times-realized I was watching it in 2.1 format halfway thru the second time, so I HAD to change it and see it again from the beginning in 5.1--Very cool indeed! Lots of good LFE, I was impressed!
4 out of 5 stars, and maybe even higher.

Didn't think I'd like it but was surprised.
Not a fan of rap myself (too old) but I thought Emenem or is it M&M or... did a very good job.

Catching up - my daughter was home from school over the holiday, so outvoted by 3 females and we watched "The Holiday" Wed. night before Thanksgiving. Eh.
After the Thanksgiving meal, we settled in to watch "Ratatouille" Marvelous. Excellent film.

For anyone that's raised sheep and liked Shawn Of The Dead, this is a must see comedy B horror. Once.
It was better than I expected, and certainly there are sheep doing things I've never seen sheep do before.

I caught a little of the Hitchcock marathon on HD-Net's movie channel over the weekend. We watched "Psycho" one night, and "Rear Window" last night.
I had never seen "Rear Window" before, and I really loved it. I think they are replaying some of the other movies next weekend, so I am going to try and catch those.
We also watched "Transformers" over the weekend. My wife asked me before it started, "Is this movie supposed to be any good?". I just said, "It is just supposed to be entertaining." With that in mind, we sat back and enjoyed the hell out of it.

I have "Vertigo" queued up to be recorded and am really looking forward to watching it. Stewart's acting was great in "Rear Window" and Grace was absolutely spectacular! Just hearing her voice made me tingle.
So last night we fired up the first "Underworld" on BD. I've seen the SD version a couple of times, and really enjoyed it. My wife couldn't remember it, and I am wanting to watch the sequel soon, so it was time to watch it again. YA, I loved DH4. You just need to realize it follows that late 80's still crazy action flick formula where the good guy has a one in million shot at something and does it about 30 times in the movie :)
aka see all DH's... Or Arnold moves, Lethal Wep's, etc...

I have no problem with suspension of disbelief...in fact, I like movies where I have to do that. After all, we go to the movies/watch movies in our HT for that very reason. HOWEVER, that said, this movie wanted us to suspend disbelief for a VERY LONG TIME.
I loved the plot of this movie (the "fire sale"), but the way they went about it with the over-the-top chases, including but not limited to: a helicopter/car mid-air collision, a jet vs. semi ending with McLane on the tail of the jet and sliding safely off it?! That's a bit too much suspension...about about 30 minutes too long.
Now, that notwithstanding, how funny would it have been instead of Kevin Smith playing "Warlock" that they were going to see the guy who plays PC? I was reeeeeeally hoping they'd throw him in somewhere...anywhere!

It's funny you mention him because I was thinking about Julian Sands the other day (the movie Warlock, in fact). Always thought he was a cool guy, an okay actor, but good at playing menacing characters.
Just checked him out on IMDB, and I wasn't aware he played in Ocean's 13. I'll have to Netflix that.

I don't have much of a problem with the physical stunts that need so much suspension as that's pretty much expected. The ones that drive me crazy are the WAY OUT THERE ridiculous technology feats. Like:
Let's re-route all the natural gas in the area to the factory so that it explodes.
Or....
During the chase scene involving the jet and semi, "Can you get me through to the pilot? Sure. [clackity clackity click click clack on a laptop] You're on!"

Kevin Smith is pretty funny. Funny story from DH4 in an interview with Kevin Smith...Kevin Smith re-wrote some of his lines to make them a little more "true to his character" and ran them by Bruce Willis who really liked what he did. He ran it by the writers and the conversation went something like this:
Bruce: "I like what Kevin did with his character here and we want to go ahead and use what he proposed"
Writers: "Well, we don't want to go that route and feel that his lines should stay as we wrote them"
Bruce: "That's cool...I understand....that's fine....So who's your second choice to play John McClain?"
Problem solved. Kevin went on to say that was the most "pimp" thing he had ever seen. Classic!

I rented it only because I had heard it was really funny. My wife and I are both regretting that we watched it.
The same thing went for 'Hot Rod'. If I had known this was an SNL production I wouldn't have rented it. I had also heard this one was funny, but 5 minutes into it my wife & I debated about stopping it but we didn't have anything else so we tortured through it.
I usually like stupid movies, but these are just plain horrible. I think I laughed only once during both of them.
'Hot Fuzz' - Saw a little while ago, but wanted to comment. My wife & I loved this movie. We were laughing all of the way through it. I only rented it because it was the only thing we hadn't seen and I expected it to be dumb. I was terribly mistaken and I thought it was well done. When I mention it to friends I'm surprised when I hear that they haven't seen it, let alone known about it.

Saw it last night with some friends.
They LOVED the special tickets we printed out..... :)
The movie itself is filmed in that "personal view" that insures lots of camera motion, and wierd, quick shots that confuse and befuddle at times. I thought I might have to retire to the back row, but it was really not too bad at all. Some of those "first person shots" with lots of camera motion in some films make me a bit sick.
Great special effects, fight scenes look real, and sound is as expected, totally cool. My guests actually insisted on staying in the theater until the credits rolled-and I mean rolled...ALL of 'em, until the very end.... They wouldn't go home!!:)
This the last Bourne flick really ties some things together, answers some questions, but does leave some room for yet another sequel....
All and all, overall I'd give it a strong 4 stars out of 5!

How long is this film? I don't know. It went by pretty quick whatever it was.
Good film, adults only.
Takes a moment to be sure that no one else can see anything when Kevin Costner talks to William Hurt.
Mr. Brooks has some depth and range, he is desperately trying so hard to be the best that he can be; daddy has to take care of it, he drives a volvo. Everyone is fighting their demons.
It is a film that was made outside of the system, because they were concerned that if they made it inside the system, the system would try to make it nice.

Just watched this today, too (Standard DVD as my Blockbuster takes 4-5 weeks to get new releases on BD and $30 was too much of a gamble). The film was right at 2 hours. It did seem to go buy very quick and kept you interested. Some action, but not a lot. It did have a nice pace to it.
There were some "holes" in the film and some characters didn't act as a normal person would, but overall I enjoyed the film. Although Demi Moore passing for a 37 year old was a stretch ;)

Watched Bourne Ultimatum Last night on HD-DVD. Wow what a great flick and great disk. True HD soundtrack was incredible and video quality was excellent. This may be the best of the Bourne series yet. Non stop action and suspense to say the least. Watched Hostel - Part II [Blu-ray] (2007) (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UJ48OU) I think I enjoyed it more than the last one. My goodness do you have to watch the special features though -- it's not that it's a whole other movie when it's explained, but there's a lot of interesting bits that were not obvious, some are movie-insider bits (who the actors are) and some are real-world bits. Speaking of obvious, there's an abundance of plot twists, all of which were predicted. One thing I was waiting for, never happened (blonde).

Order of the Phoenix on HD-DVD as well as The Sorcerers Stone and Chamber of Secrets in HD. Haven't seen the other 2 in Hd since I bought the HDDVD collectors box last week. Never thought I'd be a harry potter nut after the first movie.... didn't like it at the time but after reading the books I enjoy it even more. Kids like em all too.... gives me an excuse.... ya know the kids wanna watch it so I have to :)

Watched Halloween - Unrated Director's Cut (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition) (2007) (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VKL6Z2)
Not bad. Watched it over 3 sittings. Very Halloween-ish slasher stuff, although I've not seen Carpenter's Halloween in years.
Hated the beginning 'family' scenes -- that's not a family. Hated the menu song -- wrong pitch.
A lot of nudity, not a lot of suspense/horror -- once it gets rolling it's more assembly line violence for the last while.

I FINALLY broke down and watched the movie.
All I can say is that first scene when the train comes---wow!!!
We forgot about the Buttkickers and when the train comes, we really experienced the darn thing in our theater. Incredible!!
I had some of my athletes over last night (They wanted to watch Ratatouille) but I just HAD to prime them by using that opening "Train" sequence.
Needless to say, we pretty much had their attention after THAT scene.
In summary, I'd say about 3 out of 5 stars. Not a GREAT movie, but as many movies now a days seem to be, great special effects...
Someone should really put this scene in one of those "experience my Home Theater" Demo DVD's.....
Last night I watched the latest in the Harry Potter line, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix." This is my favorite one so far; the story was great and it's so cool watching them grow up over the years on film.
HOWEVER, what crappy picture quality. Absolutely horrible when compared to the others in this series and to most films of the past 10 years. My son has some Wiggles videos on VHS that look better than this movie does 80% of the time. What a shame.

That's a correct assumption. Upconverted to 1080. However, I'm not the only one complaining about the pq. There's a thread on this forum dedicated to the poor picture quality.
I'm beginning to believe those conspiracy theorists who say that the studios are purposely making dvds look bad to get people to buy the HD versions.

Watched Stardust [HD DVD] (2007) (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000WTLDPU). Really good fantasy adventure.
Anyone who's seen Oceans Twelve knows that stars don't make a movie, so with Peter O'Toole and Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro and a flying galleon[Time Bandits (1981)] from the commercials, I was worried. But I was pleasantly surprised with Stardust. I don't remember it starting with "Once Upon A Time" but I think it ends with "And they lived ..."

Watched 'Transformers' tonight in HD-DVD. I can see someone who is pre-twenties-something enjoying this movie, but I found it very corny and hard to sit through the entire movie. And please don't anyone tell me it is one of those movies you just need to park your brain at the door and enjoy it for what it is, because I am able to just veg-out on a lot of movies, but still enjoy them. This movie was made for those who spend the money at the box offices, which are people in their mid-twenties and younger. It is a movie that has no acting per-say, but just a lot of special effects. Whatever happened to a movie that was carried on the actors acting and not solely on special effects?
BTW, this movie probably looked just as good in SD, since it sure was not one of the better HD transfers.
On a 1 to 5 star rating, I only give it 2.5 stars.

Yuch.
there's plenty of violence with no suspense, lots of stunt work but no excitement, and a cast of characters so poorly developed that it's easier to care about the background scenery. To add insult to injury, the movie is filmed in a way that makes it seem like the camera has epilepsy and the color desaturation renders everything murky. from: http://www.reelviews.net/movies/p/pathfinder.html

The wife and I fired up that delightful holiday classic that just fills the heart with Christmas cheer....yes, I'm talking about "Bad Santa." Forgot to mention, this also has John Ritter's final performance before his untimely death. He is, at times, laugh out loud funny. Never really been a big fan of his stuff, but he really was great in this flick.

The wife & I watched 'The Last Sin Eater' last night. This is a film with a Christian message but has a wider appeal than Christian viewers. The "Sin Eater" is an old pagan custom where the sins of the dead are taken away during a ritual. The 'Sin Eater', because he has taken on all the sins of the dead is feared and unapproachable. The storyline is about a 10 year old girl who is seeking to relieve the pain caused by her sins. This film is heart-wrenching, yet heart-warming at the same time.

I heard of 'The Order' a while back but thought it was more classed as a horror film and never watched it. I never got into horror films. 'The Sin Eater', although fiction story, could be considered historical based. Welsh immigrants, who formed many Appalachian communities, were known to practice the ritual. I'd class this one more of a drama and/or faith drama.

Sundance type quirky-chick-flick. The men in this movie don't get shown in particularly positive lights. Can't say I hated it, can't say I'd recomend it. Plays like a quirky but trash novel with decent performances (interesting cast, Keri Russell, Nathon Fillion, Andy Griffith).

Watched 'The Station Agent'. I rented this movie from Netflix quit some time back and ripped it to my media server until I could get around to watching it. It was one of those movies I kept avoiding due to being afraid it was going to waste my time by being something I would not enjoy. However, after a very late evening of not being able to sleep, I decided to give it a chance and I am glad I did.
This turned out to be one of those little gems that you are glad you finally got around to seeing. There are no action, explosions, special effects, nor is it a big budget production. Instead it is just plane raw acting that centers around three people's lives that are brought together by events that seem to send us all in specific directions for unknown, but needed reasons.
4.5 out of 5 stars
Here is the movie's overview:
"Winner of 2003 Sundance Film Festival awards, 'The Station Agent' stars Emmy Award winner Patricia Clarkson (TV's 'Six Feet Under', 'Far From Heaven'), Peter Dinklage ('Elf') and Bobby Cannavale (TV's '24', 'Third Watch') in a comedy about friendship that will have you smiling long after the final credits. Fin McBride (Dinklage), a loner with a passion for trains, inherits an abandoned train station in the middle of nowhere - a place that suits him just fine because all he wants is to be alone. But that is not to be. Soon after moving in, he discovers his isolated depot is more like Grand Central Station. There's Olivia (Clarkson), a distracted and troubled artist, and Joe (Cannavale), a friendly Cuban with an insatiable hunger for conversation. With absolutely nothing in common, they find their isolated lives coming together in a friendship none of them could foresee."

Watched a few minutes of Timecop on a heavily compressed cable station called SuperStation, and glanced over at my purchased-but-not-yet-watched-dvd-pile and there was Timecop [HD DVD] (1994) (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000X1BYN8). I'd have to say the HDDVD version was much clearer!
I've been watching selected episodes from Star Trek The Original Series - The Complete First Season [HD DVD] (1966) (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VDDDY6). Supposidly they've frame-by-frame remastered this, but in Shore Leave there's still digital effects around Spock when he "beams down from the bridge". Certainly it's the sharpest Star Trek Original I've ever seen, with excelent views of the Shatner 2000, and some have said that the plywood sets are obvious but I haven't noticed it yet. the main difference of course is that CBS has replaced all the entraprise shots with new CGI shots. I think they could have done better CGI than they did, but it's worth a look. I don't know if it's worth $130 though. The reason I bought the set was because everyone's talking about The Doomsday Machine CGI, including one of the amazon comments about this set -- but it turns out that The Doomsday Machine is in Season 2.
Another comment was that in Arena, we get to see the Gorn ship. Well, that's sort of true, it's tiny and way off in the distance. On my 24" tall set (50" diagonal), it's probably about an inch and a half tall. In Balance Of Terror they've changed the 'proximity phasors' to explode at a distance and look a little less like photon torpedoes by making them blue (watch The Enemy Below 1957 (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0001NBMH6) first, since rumor has it that Rodenberry watched this movie immediately before writing Balance Of Terror).
I don't think I liked the CGI I.S.S. Fesarius in The Corbomite Maneuver -- in the original it was a bunch of little spheres, but in the new one it's a big grey sphere with a bunch of glowing little spheres around it.
There's some special features, mostly about today's people making the CGI effects, but a bit about the original shots done by the recent people who edited the HDDVDs.
CBS remastered these so they could run them on their HD stations -- but many of the CBS affiliates refuse to run Star Trek in any time slot (including my cable's CBS HD). There's a bunch of extracts on YouTube, all fuzzy.
Watched Eastern Promises [HDDVD] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000YENUIQ). A David Cronenberg film. It's the first HDDVD I've watched in a while that had to be taken out and cleaned to avoid skips. Certainly a good film, but not the fantastic I'd been lead to believe from the reviews. Equally certainly Viggo Mortensen does some good work here.
Watched Underdog [BluRay] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000WCBVQS). This sort of thing -- talking dogs -- used to be State-Of-The-Art-Disney in the 1970's. I had to watch it because a friend of mine was involved a bit. In the special features there's a couple of Underdog cartoons so you can compare the old to the new if you've forgotten. If you're going to show it to kids, show them Lady And The Tramp immediately before (meatball scene).

Last few days I threw in the old Indiana Jones DVD set to introduce my 7 year old to it. I figured he would be watching the 4th one coming out soon. Looked pretty good up scaled on my Toshiba A30. One problems were the menus, they refused to work on the Toshiba. For Xmas, wife bought me 4 Bond movies that I didn’t have (I think I have them all now, have to verify). Just threw in Live and let Die and it also looked pretty good. Sound was great on it. Menus worked on my Toshiba A30. Holiday Recap...
Ratatouille (Blu-Ray): A pretty good flick. My wife, daughter, and I really enjoyed this one. One of the best of 2007 for sure. 3.5 out of 5 stars.
Knocked Up (HD DVD): Didn't seem like the sharpest disc I've ever seen but not terrible and certainly better than DVD. The movie is ok. I liked it very much but I cant say there was anything that stood out. It's a solid movie with lots of giggles and chuckles. 3 out of 5 stars.
Superbad (Blu-Ray): Great movie. Another one of 2007's best. 3.5 out of 5 stars.
The Kingdom (HD DVD): Decent action movie. Far better than most junk from the so called big name action stars. Peter Berg seems to be getting better and better with each movie he makes. My disc has a bad spot at one point that causes the player to stutter. The disc is clean and flawless and I'm at a loss as to why this happens. I'm going to exchange the disc today and see if that helps. I'm not prone to these kind of problems and I was bummed out when I discovered it. 3 out of 5 stars.
Love Actually (DVD): Watched this for the first time over the holidays and I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not a big romantic comedy fan but this one's pretty good. 3 out of 5 stars.
Blade Runner - The Ultimate Cut (HD DVD): I didn't find the "Ultimate Cut" all that different from the "Director's Cut." Great disc of a classic film. This movie is in my top 10 of all time 4 out of 5 stars.
"Close Encounters of the Third Kind - Director's Cut"
I started watching it late and figured I'd check out 30 minutes of it, go to bed, and finish the rest the next day. Nope, when it ended at 2 in the morning I was just thinking to myself what an awesome movie that was and that it really hasn't aged at all. A true classic and the director's cut looked beautiful with a deep, booming DTS track.

Blade Runner Final Cut, upconverted on DVD (havn't made a jump yet)
Beautifully shot, but in all, pretty anticlimactic in the end. I remember seeing this as a kid and scratching my head at what the heck was going on, seeing it as an adult lead to new and different conclusions as to what was really happening. Its just thick with themes and metaphors it requires multiple viewings to really "see" everything. I still found it to be a little slow, but the cinematography as beautiful as it was twenty years ago.

I watched Woman in the Moon (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00064AEWO) which I'm reasonably sure is the same film. I'd never heard of it, so I was curious. Since it was a silent film, it didn't loose anything watching it at 2x speed. "Apparently Lang's film got so much right about space travel that the Germans seized the models used in the film as state secrets when they started their own rocket-building program. This film runs 169 minutes and is quite slow in places. It has some very interesting and thrilling scenes."
Instead of editing in Saturn/Apollo ones, I paused and channel flipped to a Kelly Monaco retrospective done in 1998.

None
There has yet to be a perfect movie. So I can't give any movie a perfect score of 5 stars. It doesn't leave any room for improvement. Conversely, there are no perfectly awful movies and I don't have any movies that I would give a half star (0 implies no rating, .5 is the lowest). The 5 star scale I use is clipped a little.
A little perspective... There are only three 4.5 star movies that I own. Band of Brothers, Casablanca, and The Maltese Falcon.

It has, however, graphic violence. But as my wife pointed out, it was fitting for the story and nothing was gratuitous.

We watched "Eastern Promises" last night also. I agree with you... very good movie. The wife liked it also but had to hide her eyes a few places (then she would ask what was happening).

Another thumbs up for Eastern Promises. Very good movie (although violent in parts). I could have also gone without seeing Viggo's junk  Very good performances in this one. Tonight is Stardust. I've heard good things about this one and for once my wife will watch a fantasy movie with me.

jandawil: I watched Stardust back on Dec 20th - very good.
Watched Sunshine [Blu-ray] (2007) (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000Y7U98W). Beautiful. Good Sci-Fi too. Some have suggested reading up on Q-Balls (http://www.citebase.org/fulltext?format=application%2Fpdf&identifier=oai%3AarXiv.org%3Acond-mat%2F0304355) first.
Watched Feast (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000GLL1U6). Amusing little horror film. The little pop up captions are great.
Watched Tremors [HD DVD] (1990) (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VJAICK). Amazingly clear transfer.

Watched Stardust last night and enjoyed it quite a bit. I'll probably have to buy this one. De Niro was great!!! Very unique flick to say the least. Highly recommend this one.

I officially de-virginized my new theater 2 nights ago when my friend and I watched Live Free or Die Hard. Expectations were somewhat low, as I am not a fan of either of the DH sequels. Man, I was impressed. I liked it! ...Not quite as much as the original, but it's definitely the second best flick of the series. I should state I am one of those people who can suspend disbelief while watching a movie, so that definitely helps with this movie. I was scratching my head often, though.
One noteworthy observation. The bass thump when a certain character gets shot near the end of the film was amazing. I felt it in my chest as if I was getting shot. And I have a pithy little sub. I would love to experience that in a theater with better equipment.

Thanks Randy. I see you are a Buckeye. We had a party in the theater last night (about 15 people) to watch the game. We had a good time, of course except for that minor detail that OSU got crushed... again... :(

Made $100 on that game. Betting against the Buckeyes was like stealing; I actually feel guilty.

Watched Glory last night. I'm sure everyone here has already seen this movie but if you haven't it's a great show.

We watched Evan Almighty (HD DVD) Tuesday night. This is not a great movie, but I wouldn't say that it's terrible either. Having pretty low expectations may have tainted my opinion. I'd bet if you go into this movie thinking that you're going to get an average movie with high production value, decent acting, and Steve Carell, you wont be too disappointed. 2.5 out of 5 stars.

We watched Transformers last night. What's all the hype about? Mediocre at best. 2 out of 4 stars.

Watched Epic Movie (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000O76ZOO). Bluch.
Except for the scene with Carmen Electra as Mystique (that blue shape shifter from X-Men) in high school doing her Pussy Cat Dolls wiggle routine -- I must have watched that part ten times.
Watched Last Sin Eater (2007) (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000NVI0DU), a FoxFaith movie (Christian) based on Road Captain's (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=12576220&highlight=Last+Sin+Eater#post12576220) recommendation earlier in this thread.
Found it more of a MadeForTV kind of thing. I agree with most of the amazon.com comments. Good film (in both uses of the word 'good'), parents should watch it before showing it to kids to pre-explain several things.
I had been talking with a bible study person I know about 'sin eaters' (in history/faith, not the movies) a week before watching this, so I'm not sure why I was expecting the little girl to become a sin eater -- what actually happens is pretty much what the bible study person said

Watched Cars in SD, no upscaling, using temporary 2.35 anamorphic lens setup. Not ideal but fun nonetheless.
I really need to finish the HT.

I second that
I watched it the other day on Blu and was totally amazed

Screened 3:10 to Yuma this past Wed...
Wife gave it 9 out of 10, I gave it 8 out of 10.
I did love the fact it was a true blue, straight up, shoot em up Western, no gimmicks and very well done. A better sound track as in choice of music, and it would of probably gotten a better score from me. :)

Watched Shoot Em Up [Blu-ray] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000XA5K4I). This film constantly reminded me of other films.
If you thought MI5 trained their agents well, you haven't seen a fully trained British Secret Nanny (played by Clive Owen, aka Carrot Killer!). Monty Python had a skit "How to defend yourself against a man armed with a Banana." The goons in this film didn't go to that school. The film is impossible, unrealistic, way over the top, way larger than life, mindless -- one long action scene with occasional short exposition, mostly in your face gun violence, overall it is fun nonetheless. Monica Bellucci has been a lot better. If you thought "Last Man Standing (1996, Bruce Willis)" was insufficiently violent or insufficiently one sided, then this is easily the film for you.
In "Bully for Bugs," Bugs Bunny, once again making that "wrong turn at Albuquerque," finds himself a spectator inside a bullring, where a magnificent bull is making short work of an overmatched toreador. Bugs is minding his own business -admittedly in the wrong place at the wrong time - "What's up, Doc?" - when the not amused bull bucks Bugs out of the arena and into the stratosphere. As Bugs, tail jacked up, is propelled toward the heavens, he turns to the camera and declares with an annoyed smirk, "Of course you know, this means war!" There ensues an outlandish, over the top, war of wits between Bugs and the bull fought with such implements as an anvil, a slingshot, a rifle, elephant bullets, axle grease, and a crude Rube Goldberg device that employs TNT.
The plot of "Shoot `Em Up" is almost as cartoonish as the action. There is so much ammunition dispersed in this movie, with the guns and gunplay erotized to a level nothing human approach in this movie, it is almost laughable that a gun control initiative is at the heart of its overblown action. Like watching a porn movie about abstinence.
Watched Con Air [Blu-ray] (1997) (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000X418UO)About the same as a decade ago.

Watched Oceans 13 on Blu-Ray last night with the Mrs. We both enjoyed it. It was much better than Oceans 12, just could not hold up to 11 though. All in all a fun watch. I did however think the picture quality for Blu-Ray was very poor. I'm sure a lot of it was how the picture was shot just the style of the movie.

Watched 3:10 to Yuma great acting by all !
Shoot Em Up after watching the extras on the disk I had a lot more respect for the director ! He had worked on many others movies and that is why the action scenes seemed so familiar.
Death Sentence with Kevin Bacon and John Goodman. I enjoyed it for what it was another revenge movie with a lot of ultra violence and gun fire.
Sunshine very enjoyable although the filter used on the film took a little getting used to.It was entertaining ! Johnathan

We had the in-laws over last night and watched the movie "Next" in HD via TW's On Demand. Nicolas Cage's character can see a few minutes into the future. Great movie, we all liked it. 3 out of 4 stars. I don't know what to say about the ending except that some of us liked it and others weren't so sure. See for yourself.
