Roundup of my latest movies:

Son of Rambow (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0845046/) - feel good movie some kids trying to recreate the First Blood movie from Stallone. 7 out of 10

Hellboy 2 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0411477/) - I will admit I fell asleep during the first Hellboy and I saw the reviews on this one and I thought I would give it a try. This one hit the chord of humor/fantasy. I really liked how imaginative the supporting characters were written. A pure joy to watch. 8 out of 10.

Tropic THunder (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0942385/) - WOW what can I say. I have watched 2x in the last week. It was hilarious. Over the top and out of control. I will say I recommended it to of my co-workers and they hated it. Comedy is tuff. 9 out of 10.

Fail-Safe (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058083/) - 1964. First off I honestly think that older (pre-1980) movies are dated and don't stand the test of time. WOW what a shock this one was. Peter Fonda and Walter Matthau were brilliant in this. This is a movie about the Cold War stalemate. The ending is great. 9 out of 10

Posting others later.....

Fail-Safe is one I've enjoyed as well. A similar theme is in the 90s flick, By Dawn's Early Light (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099197/), you might want to pick that one up to try...

Watched... Star Trek First Contact tonight (1996)... probably for the 9 or 10th time. I can't believe this movie is that old.

Was much better after I realized 10 minutes in that it was in 2.0 stereo. After a quick trip to the DVD setup menu, it was in 5.1 surround with the shakers and sub going full bore, as it should be.

Watched "The 400 Blows" and "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold". I didn't really care so much for the former (perhaps I don't appreciate art), but I especially liked the latter. In fact, I liked it so much that I watched part of it again.:D

Smart People (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0858479/) - Dennis Quaid plays an aging, widower, professor, that's kind of an a-hole. He learns to move on with his life with the help of his daughter, Ellen Page, his step-brother Thomas Haden Church, and romantic interest, Sarah Jessica Parker. Church and Page stand out in this otherwise slightly better than average romantic comedy. 3 out of 5.

The Visitor (2007) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0857191/) - Richard Jenkins puts in a performance that has people talking about awards... big awards. He plays an aging, widower, economics professor that's coasting through the remainder of his dull existence. Through his one passion, music, he makes friends with a couple of illegal aliens and we get a look at what it might be like to be someone who wants only to live and be happy in this great country. The Visitor is very good drama. 4 out of 5.

Joyeux Noel (2005) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0424205/) - Joyeux Noel is about the truce on Christmas Eve during WWI. Based on a very compelling true story, the movie does a very good job tell it. This is a French film and it seems that the respective languages (English, German, and French) are spoken throughout. I had the English subtitles going the whole time. I learned of this movie when someone posted it in this thread last year around this time. I am in their debt. 3.5 out of 5.

Kung Fu Panda (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0441773/) - I was pretty happy with this movie even though we watched it split over several days. I think it might be a bit better if viewed whole. 3 out of 5.

I saw that earlier in this thread also, when talking about good Xmas movies - watched and enjoyed it. If you'd like a conflicted, pacificist, Christmas double-bill, "A Midnight Clear" is also a good film with a 1992 cast that they probably couldn't have afforded in 2002 (or now).

I watched this one last night. I agree that it wasn't Black's best. I typically like him but didn't his time. On the other hand, Robert Downey Jr. was EXCELLENT! I've really come around to like him as an actor. He's got great comedy chops and absolutely stole that movie in my opinion. Tom Cruise's role was certainly over-rated though.

Watched a couple family flicks on Blu....

Fred Claus - Saw this at the theater, but the wife likes Vince Vaughn so we rented it. I hated it then, I hated it even more the second time. I think they added goofy sound effects that I don't remember being in the theatrical release. (1/5)

Kit Kittredge - Watched this with my 10 year old daughter and 6 year old son. Both really liked it and I did also. Good, clean family movie...Joan Cusack of course overacts, but she does that in every movie she's in. Not only was it entertaining, but somewhat educational in that kids learn about what occured during the Great Depression. (3.5/5)

Finally getting around to posting "What we Watched" from last weekend. It's been a busy week.

Hancock (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448157/) - It seems I have to add Will Smith to my short list of actors that I give, "the benefit of the doubt." If the Fresh Prince is in a movie, Wild Wild West (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120891/) excluded, there's a very good chance I'm going to like it. I had heard mixed reviews of Hancock and my expectations were tempered. I wasn't disappointed. I purchased the Blu-Ray and I'm happy I did. This is a movie I will watch again. Good picture and great sound. 3 out of 5.

Tropic Thunder (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0942385/) - I don't go to the theater very often. I have several reasons but mainly it's because in my mind very few movies warrant the effort and expense. This tends to put added pressure on the movie to live up to my expectations. When I saw Tropic Thunder at the movies I loved it. During the first act I was crying with laughter. The movie does tend to go downhill a little but I left the theater very satisfied. That said, when I watched it on Blu-Ray at home it wasn't nearly as funny. I still like this movie and I'm sure I'll watch this disc again but it lost something along the way. 3.5 out of 5.

Pear Harbor (2001) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0213149/) - Pearl Harbor certainly has its flaws, but I like it. I've seen it several times and it holds up to repeated viewing time and time again. The attack scene in HD and on a decent sound system is nothing short of spectacular. The Blu-Ray is a triple dip for me and I'll probably get the directors cut when it comes out. 3 out 5.

Friday night we watched The Dark Knight (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468569/) on Blu-Ray. When I watched it in the theater, I was little underwhelmed. I'm not sure if it was the hype or if I was in a bad mood or something. Upon further review I find this movie to be exceptional. The audio and video on the Blu-Ray disc are nothing short of the finest presentation you can get in your home. Great movie... 4 out of 5 stars.

Busy weekend in the HT.....all these were on BR from Netflix

Watched Prince Caspian last night with my kids. I actually liked it better than the first one. Pretty entertaining movie and we all enjoyed it.

I watched Wanted with....well... myself because my wife wasn't interested. I didn't know you could have that much fun watching a lame a$$ movie like that, but I did. Very enjoyable mindless, ridiculous, action.

Watched Hancock with the Mrs as well. I went in with so-so expectations due to the mixed reviews. Not one worth buying, but a fun rental. I thought Jason Bateman would have been funnier, but he was pretty straight.

My subwoofer needs a rest after those three. We'll be watching Dark Night on Thursday.

Watched Kung-Fu Panda in the HT last night with the wife. The movie was good and the animation was excellent. The story line reminded me of the 3rd Matrix.

The true reason to watch this movie is the soundtrack. IMHO it was really well encoded giving us a great sense of depth in the soundfield. That, and it rocked the sub/butt kickers!

This past weekend I saw:

Madagascar 2 (with my son and neice) - @ the theater - It was okay and pretty funny in spots...some really adult humor too that went right over the kids' heads.

X Files 2 - on DVD - This was surprisingly good. If you're a fan of the show, especially the one-off episodes that didn't deal with the overall grand conspiriacy...you should check this out.

Hitman - on DVD - Pretty good action flick with some nice visuals of recent Bond girl Olga Kuryenko. ;)

I just completed my theater just before Thanksgiving holiday weekend and have watched a movie every night since.

I'm playing catchup as I have not really watched a movie in the past 1.5 years, b/c I've been working on my basement/theater since.

Here are some movies that I can think of off the top of my head:

Vantage Point, very exciting and keeps you on the edge and guessing the whole time.

The Prestige, quality acting and pretty intriguing story.

Prince Caspian. I really liked the first Narnia, and I think this one may be better.

Tropic Thunder was decent. Downey was freakin' hilarious in this movie. I heard the hype on Tom Cruise and I thought it was over-rated.

Indiana Jones (the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls) was pretty decent, I kept hearing bad things about it, but I liked it.

Dark Knight was good. Kinda dragged it out a little, but I thought it was an excellent movie.

Hancock: First half was great, last half blew it.

Transformers: Excellent movie.

10000 BC: Acting was kinda lame, and story wasn't so great. Good effects though.

Wanted: Average movie at best.

3:10 to Yuma: Great movie, very entertaining.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall: it was ok, had some laugh out loud moments; slightly above average movie.

Step Brothers: Same as above...

Blood Diamond: I really liked this movie. I thought Leonardo DeCaprio should've gotten an oscar for this role. He did a fine job.

That's all I can think of for now...

On Christmas day the family was gathered in my HT. We ate dessert and played around with the "elf yourself" website. You basically upload people's photos and the website puts their head on an elf's body with a funny hat on. Then hit "play". Got to see my Mom dance around as an elf to a disco beat. Everyone was crackin' UP! That was a crowd pleaser.

Later in the evening my wife opened up her new DVD of "Nightmare Before Christmas - Tim Burton". The soundtrack has much dynamic range so you have to crank up the sound to catch all the subtle dialog. We watched that with our couch bass shakers (K-Woon VWS-100's) turned on. It was a very immersive movie - so much moreso here at home with the large screen size, the surround sound, and the vibrations! Loved it!

Watched "Wall-E" this week. I thought it was an excellent movie. The environmental / human behavior symbolism in that movie is tremendous.

Also watched "Son Of Rambow" last night. This was a british style comedy with a good story line to it (about two kids making a movie for a film competition). Worth the rental IMHO.

Going to watch this week: "Wanted" and "National Treasure 2".

This weekend I blew through the latest Netflix allocation...

Prince Caspian was decent. Some parts I liked better than TLWW but others I didn't. Peter came off as an ass, for example.

Tropic Thunder was OK. Tom Cruise was freakin' awesome though. I especially like where he starts "the speech" from Jerry Meguire and then goes all nasty with it. :)

Tonight was Baby Mama. I got this because I generally love Tina Fey and Amy Pohler together on SNL. This movie...not so much.

Now that was the Netflix allocation - I also picked up some stuff from Amazon. NYE I'm watching The Dark Knight. I still haven't seen this. :) Also picked up Top Gun - that wasn't too bad. A good purchase. I also picked up Dark City. *I*'ve seen it but my best friend hasn't - can't wait to show him...

The Family Man (2000) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0218967/) - "Where's my Ferrari?!?!?" I love this movie. I'm not usually a Nick Cage fan but he does pretty well in this movie and Tea Leoni is simply beautiful. Don Cheadle and Jeremy Piven, two actors that have come into their own of late, play a couple of small parts. All in all not a bad It's a Wonderful Life (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038650/) rip off. 3 out of 5.

Punch Drunk Love (2002) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0272338/) - The professional critics seem to love this movie. Friends of mine that have seen it, not so much. It's way different than your average movie staring Adam Sandler and he does a pretty damn good job playing a guy that is a little unstable, to say the least. To be honest I didn't think Sandler had the chops to pull something like this off but he does very well. Seeing this I'm not sure why we wastes his time with stuff like You Don't Mess with the Zohan (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0960144/), but whatever.

I don't quite understand the attraction Emily Watson's character has for Sandler's. I would think most girls would run as fast as possible away from a guy that weird. Never-the-less this is a very good movie. I give it a 3.5 out of 5.

Dr. No (1962) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055928/) - My wife gave me this for Christmas on Blu-Ray and it looks great. It's a damn good example of what a 46 year old movie should look like on Blu-Ray. Arguably, this is one of the best Bond movies ever. It's not too over the top and Bond is dashing, cunning, and ruthless. Sean Connery IS James Bond in my book. Daniel Craig is a close second. 3.5 out of 5.

Burn After Reading (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0887883/) - As has been my experience with a few of the Coen brother's movies, Burn After Reading left me spinning a little when it was over. Wow, what a crazy movie. I like several other Coen brothers movies better but this is still a fine movie. And, by-the-way, Tilda Swinton scares me. 3.5 out of 5.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0859163/) - This is not a good movie. It's not completely terrible like the 0 -16 Detroit Lions but it has very little going for it. The special effects look great and there is a ton of action but that's about it. After this and Journey to the Center of the Earth (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0373051/) I'm starting to loose faith in Brendan Fraser. 2.5 out of 5.

Downfall (2004) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363163/) - Downfall is a spectacularly good film with only one major flaw, the subject matter. This is not a happy movie, it's very depressing. If you can get past watching a fanatical cult commit suicide with their leader, you'll be treated to a movie that meets or exceeds all the standards by which a great film can be measured. 4 out of 5.

Though the idea of "Breakfast, FoTR, lunch, TT, dinner, RoTK." sounds interesting. Just not sure I could do it.:o

Tonight, something less involving. Probably a Concert DVD followed by a Comedy and then watch the "Ball" drop.

Have a great one all! And thanks for all the references of good DVDs over the past year. I have used many of them.:D

Watched "Transformers" for the first time last night. I was very pleasantly surprised. It was a lot of fun.

One of my favorites and don't really know why. Have seen this about 20 to 30 times. Got it on dvd and is recorded on my dvr in cinemax HD. I guess its like seeing your toys come to life.

"Tropic of Thunder" last night with my parents over. AWFUL! It had a few good moments, but my Dad said it best, "it's like one joke that lasts two hours". I think that's the final straw for me with Ben Stiller. The cameos were the only thing that gave it interest at all.

Tonight will be "Hellboy II". I'm hoping for better things.

I watched "Fat Girl" got it from the Library as it is one of the Criterion Collection movies I didn't own.....

Thought it was good, and very odd, and disturbing!

I also watched "Happiness" on DVD... my wife wasn't a fan because it was too disturbing!

I Watched "L.A. Confidential" on DVD a few days ago, and it honestly wasn't as good as I remembered it being..... sometimes I wonder why I bought all of these movies :(

The Dark Knight on Blu-ray has arrived, so I hope to watch it in the next week or so, and finally see what the hype is about.

One of my friends gave me the Hellboy II BD disc for Christmas. He came over last night to watch it. Neither of us liked it as much as the first one. At least I finally got to see all the lights come on the front of my receiver for 7.1 HD-MA surround.

The only bad part was that this was the first BD that my friend had purchased and so he didn't realize the Border's was not the best place to buy them.

I've had 3 straight movie nights!

First was Tuesday night. Watched '300'. Great movie. Wish I had seen it sooner. The strategy employed by the Spartans was amazing. Those guys could fight!

Wednesday night my wife and I watched 'PS I Love You'. Another great movie. It was a little slow at the end, but the story plays out well.

Thursday night I watched 'Batman Begins'. I watched this because there wasn't much on TV last night, but also to prep me for 'Dark Knight' which should be arriving next week along with my new Blu-Ray player! I actually prefer 'Batman Begins' to some of the other Batman movies. It isn't so "comic book", if you know what I mean.

Last night my wife and I watched Youngblood (1986) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092272/) on Comcast OnDemand HD. I grew up watching movies like this when "Cable" was big in the 80's and movies like this were featured on Showtime or HBO, etc...

This movie may not be Oscar worthy, but it had it all:
action
blood
drama
comedy
sex (with nudity)
all making a rating of R (pretty rare now adays)
and a decent story to boot.

Okay, some of the acting was not THE best, but this included actors who are still mainstream today that were just getting started back then (which is what makes watching these older movies all the better). It had Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Cynthia Gibb and Ed Lauter.

Wife and kids were gone the last couple days, and I'm on a winter break, so lots of guys action movies for me:

Eagle Eye-loved the action, it was a lot better than I expected
Casino Royale-Very entertaining
Lord of War-I like the story, but not the presentation. For some reason, it
didn't hold me.
Hulk-Again, way better than I thought it would be. Really fun to watch with
the lights down and surround cranked.
Dark Knight-Got it for Christmas, and am glad I did. This is one I'll be
watching over and over
Then, a bunch of football.

I know that this is typically for posting what you watched in your home theater, but the way I look at it, I'm gonna be buying the DVD in March so I may as well let you guys know about this one if you don't already....

Went to the theater on New Years to see the movie Let The Right One In (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/lat_den_ratte_komma_in/), a Swedish made vampire movie about two 12-year old kids; he's a loner who's always picked on and obsessed with reading about murders in the newspaper, and she's a 200-year old vampire in a 12-year old body who moves in next door. Great flick! Doesn't rely on cheap scare tactics, instead on building suspense. Some effects are cheap though (the cat scene in particular), but all-in-all a great story.

Only problem is they are making an American remake of this for 2010 that I'm sure won't compare to the original.

We didn't watch as many movies as I thought we would. Lots of football and Xbox 360 got in the way.

From Russia With Love (1963) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057076/) - It's been a while since I've seen these old Bond films. This and Dr. No are quite well done, especially when compared to much of the other crap that has been passed off as Bond movies along the way. My wife got me this Blu-Ray for Christmas and I'm very happy with this disc. 3.5 out of 5.

The Godfather (1972) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068646/) - My wife gave me this Blu-Ray as well and it's another exceptional disc. The movie is of course a classic. 4 out of 5.

I've been recording the CBS show "The Unit (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/the_unit/)" since about the middle of last season. I've heard that it was very good from a few sources and was intrigued enough to record it but not enough to watch it. We watched a couple episodes over the last few days and I'm hooked.

Tonight my family and I watched Wall-E. We saw this in the theater and I decided to view this again on Blu-ray in our "theatre". I have to say, i really enjoy watching movies at home now....hmmmmm, I wonder why.

Wall-E on Blu-ray is eye candy with an ok story. Very watchable, but very forgettable.

Oh, and I saw some of Heart - Alive in Seattle on Blu-ray...simply amazing PQ and AQ and the band was in top form. I rented this one but will probably purchase this for my collection.

The past few days I along with varying members of my family have had the opportunity to watch some of the movies I received or purchased over the holidays.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull-I have enjoyed the Indiana Jones franchise however I did not like this one as well as I liked Raiders and Crusade. I did like it better than Temple which is my least favorite. I actually liked the Jones series when there wasn't so much emphasis on the special effects and more on the plot and character development. Call me old school I guess.

Mummy Tomb of the Dragon Emperor-I really enjoyed the first two, not so much the Scorpion King (really did not think it was part of the Mummy series anyway) and I was really disappointed in this latest installment. Again I think there was too much focus on special FX and the story line suffered as a result.

Tropic Thunder-Can't sugar coat this one. Basically the movie is crap. Sorry to those who I may offend but this movie is a real stinker. Glad it was a freebie (borrowed from a friend) or I would have been greatly disappointed.

Eagle Eye-Pleasantly surprised with this movie. My wife and I watched this and really enjoyed the movie. Lots of action, suspense, and for the wife a developing love story, (sigh). Her only complaint at the end was they didn't kiss. Sheesh! Sorry ladies if I ruined the end of the movie for you.

List of movies I can watch endlessly and still enjoy each time (in no particular order).

The Matrix Trilogy
Star Wars (all)
Cars
Transformers
The Fifth Element
The Blues Brothers
Mummy and Mummy Returns

There are others but I don't want to bore you.

Last couple of weeks with the holidays have been mostly family movies here: Kung Fu Panda (the skidoosh scene made me feel like this guy (http://joecarr.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/memorex-chair-man.jpg)), Wall-E, Shaolin Soccer (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286112/) (wholly underrated IMO), Mama Mia, Prince Caspian, Scrooged.

Finally got around to pulling the trigger on a lot of old favorites and buying them on DVD, rather than suffering through edited cable versions. These just arrived today:

Army of Darkness
Big Trouble in Little China
Scanners
The Shining

The Green Mile
Planet Terror (ok..not an old fav...haven't seen it...but I did like Death Proof)

Eagle eye was a great movie. Sure it was a break from reality, but isn't that the point of large blockbuster type films?

I mean, did you like terminator? Its not like robots can melt and be blown up and come back to life. But, that doesn't change the feeling you got when the guy melted through the bars of the cell, but his gun got stuck...

Movies are not suppost to be "real", just real fun and a break from reality.

I guess i've seen to many over the top westerns as of late, so this was a fresh movie to me. I'd give it a 4 1/2 out of 5, not as good as my all time favorite Tombstone but definitely a fine western.

Speaking of over the top westerns, I also saw Sukiyaki Western Django last week. Its a strange one to say the least. I guess any movies with Quintin Tarentino are expected to be weird and this one is no exception.

Also watched Legend of the Black Scorpion last week too. I really enjoyed this movie. I thought Ziyi Zhang was great in it. The visuals are top notch and really looked great on a projector. Its kind of a Asian remake of Hamlet. I will say its a love it or hate it movie, reviews seem to be split to both sides.

I saw two ridiculous movies the other night. I hope I don’t offend anyone.

The Mummy 3. Extremely cheesy, bad script, bad acting, just could not stay interested in the movie. I do like Jet Li too.
2 good things are the visuals and 2.35 wide for those that have it. I wanted to turn it off midway, but hung on till the end. I should’ve stopped.

Max Payne. I really like Mark Whalberg, (sp?), but he picked a sorry movie here. The script was so bad, I couldn’t stay interested. Another movie I wanted to turn off halfway, but hung on till the end. After it was over, I was like, “I want those 2 hours of my life back!”
2 good things. Visuals and 2.35 wide for those that have it.

Also saw Pineapple Express.
Now I thought this movie was pretty hilarious. Pretty cheesy at times, but it is very funny and you don’t have to be a pot head to enjoy it either. Although I’m sure that would help…;)
this movie had a pretty good plot and good casting of characters.

Watched Burn after Reading tonight. Not as funny as some wold make it out to be but entertaining all the same. Brad Pitt as a stereotype dope that works in a gym was pretty funny to watch. All in all a good movie about stupid people doing stupid things. There is a subtle aspact to the stupid people. They act like you would think someone would act who watches too many movies and thinks if they act like the people they see in the movies that they can handle anything. 3.5 out of 5.

Watched "The Contract" with Morgan Freeman and John Cusack. It was close to being good, but not quite there.

Hollywood keeps thinking we will buy into cheesy romances thrown into action movies when romance would have to be the last thing on these characters minds. Do the stories seem more "full" with that "kiss out of nowhere" at the end of an otherwise decent film. arrrgghhhh.

I have "The Mummy 3" waiting for tomorrow night, but Old has tainted my enthusiasm.

I watched the unrated version of Max Payne (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0467197/) on Blu-Ray Friday night. Unfortunately, it turned out to be exactly what I expected, a very mediocre movie about a video game. On the other hand it does have some good points. Most notably are the wonderfully beautiful Olga Kurylenko and Mila Kunis. The soundtrack is also quite dynamic with plenty of bass and rumble. However, the few good things don't make up for the dumb cookie cutter story line. I bought this Blu-Ray blindly on Wahlberg's prior track record and I'm sorry I did. I may watch it again if I need to remember that I'm too old, poor, and married to date young Hollywood actresses or if I'm searching for a way to justify keeping it on the shelf. Max Payne isn't horrible but it isn't good either. 2.5 out of 5

I watched Wall-E on Blu-ray... thought it was really good.

I watched Vantage Point a couple of evenings ago. I'm not really sure how I feel about this film. I actually was really hoping I would like the film, but maybe because of the late hour I just couldn't stay focused. Usually I like films that tell the story in a different way (as this one surely does) but my mind just kept wandering. I think I'll give the movie another shot.

I have no probelm with the film ending on a down note, which it didn't for the world at large. I have a problem with the father and what he did. It's not plausibale given what we know about the characters and what they went through.

I don't think it is THAT type of adult film!

I like the 1971 version better, however the newer version is quite good. Both versions of the film are quite enjoyable. O.K.

Finished up "The Express"

I rented it from Blockbuster online and had to take it out to clean it twice to keep it from freezing.

I watched it on blu-ray and the audio and video were both nice..... better audio than video, that's for sure.

The movie itself was much in the "narration" style of "We Are Marshall" but was more serious (not that the subject matter of "We are marshall" didn't warrant seriousness) in tone, and done a LOT better.....

I avoided reading about the movie because I wanted to know as little as possible about the background story going in, but as a Life-long Cleveland Browns' fan, there were some things I knew, but found the overall story very captivating.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Nearly everyone knows this movie. I hadn't watched it for a number of years. This release of the movie is very good and the added 2nd disk with a number of featurettes on the movie and Scorsese make for a nice package.

Seeing how young not only DeNiro and Jodi Foster but Harvey Keitel and Peter Boyle and the gorgeous Cybill Shepherd are, shocked me into realizing how old this film is. No offense to the above! Times Square also shows what it used to be like before the likes of Disney and MTV moved into the neighborhood.

It is a serious movie, somewhat in the vein of Children of Men (at least I got that vibe from it), and it's not easy to watch (warning: there is a sexual assault scene that is difficult, and although shot without graphic nudity - the implication alone is plenty).

The movie isn't about the blindness, it is about the people, and I think it's a very interesting subject.... what would happen to society if everyone suddenly lost their site?

Miracle at St. Anna (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1046997/) - This is the first Blu-Ray of a newly released movie I've actually received from Netflix. I have many still in my queue that have been out for weeks but the status still reads "long wait" or "very long wait." That little victory was one of the few highlights of watching this movie.

War movies are my favorite genre and I was very excited about seeing this movie. I had at one time pre-ordered this movie from Amazon but I'm trying to cut some costs lately and I've been, trying to, rent more movies. When the disc arrived from Netflix I couldn't wait to pop it in the old PS/3 and enjoy. I couldn't be more disappointed. Unfortunately, I don't think it was a case of overblown expectations.

Miracle at St. Anna is a mess. It's too long and I found it hard to get through. I wouldn't go as far as saying it is bad enough to gong and turn off completely but I found myself thinking that there are other things I'd rather be doing. It took me three sittings to finally finish it. The characters are overly simplistic and ridiculously stereotypical. The acting is uneven and sometimes quite bad. The dialog is laughable and I think it contributes to the bad acting. It's hard to believe that this is a Spike Lee movie. I've seen a few of his other films and they were all well made.

There are some redeeming qualities to Miracle at St. Anna. The story is interesting and compelling. It really could have been a great film. The cinematography is wonderful. This movie is beautifully filmed and looks good on Blu-Ray. I wanted to like this movie but it fought me all the way. I'm very happy I didn't purchase this BD. 2 out of 5.

RockNRolla (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1032755/) - Guy Richie is back. I'm not sure where he went with the jumbled, overly complicated, mess that was his last film, Revolver (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365686/) but he's back.

RockNRolla is not quite as good as Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120735/) and Snatch (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0208092/) but it has some of the same qualities that make those movies great. It's funny, violent, uses flashbacks and narration well, and is very well paced. If you liked Richie's other movies, I'm pretty sure you'll like this one. 3.5 out 5.

The past few days have been a wild ride movie wise with a wide variety of flicks. Started out Thursday with Monty Python's Life of Brian. Classic Monty for sure. A must watch for those who enjoy Monty's unique brand of humor.

Friday the wife and I watched our 5 yr old nephew and watched Wall-E and Madagascar 2. Wall-E was actually quite a let down after Cars and The Incredibles. I have felt that the last two films from Pixar studios have not lived up to some of their other releases. Madagascar 2 was quite enjoyable and I think I actually liked it better than the first.

Sunday was Ironman and finished out the evening with The Matrix. Both of those are fantastic and I have watched both many times with the Matrix too many times to actually count.

As I type here the family is watching the third Mummy but as I had already watched it and found it lackluster I decided to visit here instead.

1. Hard Target
2. Sudden Death.. 2nd Van Damme movie in a row.
3. Back to the Future 2
4. SuperBad
5. ET

The first three I caught "ON DEMAND" and the second two were on HBO and Starz..

Forgot how much I enjoyed the 90's action flicks..

Interesting! I thought Wall-E was fabulous. My daughter watches it over and over and I still get a good laugh each time. Maybe it has something to do with being similar to the movie Short Circuit, which I loved as a kid. I liked it better than Cars, but haven't seen the Incredibles yet.

- Two for the Money. Decent flick with Matthew McConaughey, Al Paccino, and Rene Russo. Based on real-life evenst of sports handicapper Brandon Lang, who os on local DC radio here occasionally...

-Failure to Launch. Also Matthew McConaughey, and Sarah Jessica Parker. Only OK, and rather chck-flickish. I don't really care for Parker.

- Inner Space. Classic Spielberg movie with Martin Short, Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan. I thought it was pretty funny still, but kids only thought it was OK.

The main plot of Failure To Launch, with Matthew McConaughey, was awful.

But the sub plot with Zooey Deschanel, particularly the gun shop and bird scene, I thought was a riot (good). I've shown these two scenes to many people. No point in boring them with the rest of the movie though.

Stars Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti, Monica Bellucci.

Real over the top ultra-violence. Giamatti played a great bad guy. I just watched his portrayal of John Adams in the HBO series so this was quite a change of roles to see him in.

We watched Body of Lies (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0758774/) this weekend on Blu-Ray. I remember being somewhat underwhelmed when I saw it in the theater. I was hoping for much more, but I liked it a bit better the second time around. In fact, I think it falls just short of being a great movie.

Body of Lies is a perfect example of not being able to tell how the Chili is going to taste until it's done. You can start with stellar ingredients, a great cook, and ample funding but in the end the Chili, or in this case the movie, ends up a little flat. On the other hand, the acting is great, the production values are high, and this is a great looking film. Pacing and the screenplay seem to be where the "flavor" goes awry. Body of Lies is not DiCaprio's, Crowe's, or Scott's best movie but it's far cry from shabby. I put Body of Lies on the low end of 3.5 out of 5.

My daughter and I watched Chocolate (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1183252/) last night. It's another Thai martial arts movie from the makers of Ong-Bak (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0368909/) and The Protector (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427954/). Chocolate is about an autistic teenage girl who can learn incredible martial arts skills just from watching people train or on TV. The story can be predictable and often silly but it's not terrible and that might not be the best reason to watch this film. The Jackie Chan/Bruce Lee/Thai Boxing style of action is great and the stunts performed buy the actors are, at times, just crazy. Measured against its peers, Chocolate is not quite as good as Ong-Bak, which is really pretty good. It is, however, way better then many, much higher budget, American action films. 3 out of 5.
