Last night I watched "Little Big Man".

The picture quality was pretty good considering the age of the film. The sound was pretty decent, but no real LFE or surround activity.

The movie itself was as good as I remembered it. It's about a 121 yr. old caucasian man recounting his life raised by the Cheyenne and other life events. These events lead him back and forth between life with the Cheyenne and the "white man". The other events are his religious phase, his gunfighter phase, his store owner phase, his going back to the Cheyenne and having four wives, and his encounters with Custer.
There is some dry humor throughout this film so it may not be to everybody's tastes, but who knows?

Here's a stupid question: What are you watching Sunday around 6PM?:D :D

I have a nice little "Watch The Pats Skin The Cats" party I'm putting together. The Pats are going to redeem us, I know it!

In case of a mis-hap, I've got obsene amounts of alcohol at arms length. You know, just in case The Cats have teeth. Damn! if I keep having flashbacks of Little's day of infamy. If I keep thinking this way, I may have to start drinking before Sunday!

We watch "Bruce Almighty" tonight. I just don't seem to be able to laugh that much anymore, but this movie did it for me. I think Jim Carrey has come a long way since his early movies, like "Pet Detective", which to me was too over the top. I felted the same about Steve Martin's earlier movies, and now I find him to be an excellent seasoned actor.

The night before last I watched "It Came from Outer Space!" a 1953 classic sci-fi movie. I have not seen this in years and enjoyed it more now on my 92” screen, then my first viewing years ago.

I'm excited to host my first Super Bowl party this year... and I don't even like football very much!

But I'll watch anything if it is on my 12-foot diagonal screen and I can get some friends together and enjoy some food and drink.

I couldn't care less who plays and wins, but I'm gonna have a blast!

I too really enjoyed "Bruce Almighty" when we watched it for the first time the other night. It seems that Jim Carey is finally back.

I found it interesting that the phone number on his pager had been changed to "555-0123" on the DVD version. I noticed this because I remember when the film hit the theaters, for some reason they didn't use a movie industry standard "555" number and used a normal number instead. It caused a huge mess because people all over the country with that local number got tons of calls from idiot film goers that tried to call God.

Here is one news article that came out right after the film was released in theaters...

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/05/27/entertainment/main555630.shtml

I'd say they were smart to change the number on the DVD, as DVDs will be viewed forever. I bet there were some lawsuits filed over the original version.

The family got together yesterday and watched a variety of movies.

Dreamcatcher
I am a big Morgan Freeman fan and enjoyed the cool, maniacal Colonel Collins. Look out for the "Collins Line"...
This movie had everyone on the edge of their seats.
If you like suspense this is good one.

Boat Trip
I like Cuba Gooding Jr. and the movie was okay.
I laughed when I was supposed to, the movie dragged in some parts, but
Roger Moore was a riot!

Housesitter
I love Steve Martin, my wife can't stand him...but she loves Goldie Hawn...so this movie was a good compromise.

This movie was all over the place but I especially loved the scene where Newton's father was lecturing from the chalkboard!

Friday night - "Someone Like You" (what can you do with the wife and 2 daughters picking out movies?).

Saturday night - wife and oldest daughter out, so "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" (Director's Edition). A fun movie, but I wish they'd worked more on the sound. The explosion in the beginning should have knocked the berkliners over! :D

Saturday night: "Freddy vs. Jason". Even sillier than I thought it might be, although it has an interesting cast with Ginger from "Ginger Snaps", John Ritter's son, one of the members of Destiny's Child, and a gruesome cameo from Scut Farkus from "A Christmas Story".

Movie's not great, but the DVD is an absolute fantastic presentation. I'm not one to judge video, but the sound was top-shelf. Amazing. If you can stomach the movie, you'll want to at least give it a rental to hear what it's like in your theater.

After reading the last few posts, I had to launch another search party to go look for the lost Bruce Almighty DVD that I posted on a few pages back. I totally knocked the seats over and shook them. From inside the reclining mechanism of the left-most seat came the long lost Bruce!! I'm so relieved! That was driving me nuts!

And now from the viewing report:

Friday night: We went over to a friend's house and there we watched Freddy vs Jason. The only thing I want to say about this is I'm glad I didn't waste my bulb on it. Then again, I knew what to expect. I just wish I hadn't spent my precious time on it.

Saturday night: The wife and I watched Once Upon A Time In Mexico. I'm a fan of El Mariachi and Desperado. This one was no different. If you are into that sort of thing, this is GREAT. The color temp of this DVD is sky high. At first I thought I had lost my calibration. That high temp gives it a certain mood that goes well with the film. Salma is lovely as ever, wish there was more of her. I rented this one, but now I'm inclined to go to Bestbuy and pick up all three.

Today: You already know! I'll let you know how it went tomorrow.

Good luck to all on your Superbowl parties!

Hey Markito, you don't need to know much to enjoy The Superbowl. All you have to do is repeat after me: Go Pats! (repeat 10 times really loud after every play) add alcohol liberally and enjoy!

Watched "Resident Evil". Hmm, not the best movie, but the sound was good, which is really the reason I rented it in the first place.:p Also watched "Perfect Storm" again, and that movie is always a good one. We also watched "Once upon a time in Mexico" When is Antonio gonna get too old to make these movies?? Bought "Darkness Falls" Great movie, and the sound is somethings else too. Didn't know which was the "Tooth Fairy" was coming at you. Check this one out if only for the sound. Tonight we're going to see "Ice Age". Heard it's a good one....we'll see. ;)

Well GUS, your boys did it! What an incredible game! So much better than when past SB's have been blow outs. It was fun to see the scoring go back and forth.

I had about 25 people over for the SB party and the big game in High Definition on the 12-foot screen was a very big hit. People couldn't stop commenting on how this is how the game is supposed to be watched.

It was a fun night.

Picked up 3 to watch with my Hollywood video .99 coupons on Friday, first was Punch Drunk Love, although alittle strange I enjoyed it. Then watched Once apon a Time in Mexico, I really enjoyed the extras showing Robert Rodriguez home studio where he works on his films. My son watched Underworld with me, I always have enjoyed Vampire flicks and thought this one, while not perfect, was pretty good.
After the Super Bowl watched the first two episode of Band of Brothers. I saw Band of Brothers on HBO when it came out but missed some episodes and have never seen it in sequence, nor on a big screen. I need to buy this as it is the kind of stuff you can watch over and over again.
What was with the Janet Jackson breast exposure at half time?? Not that I am complaining. I did a double take and checked with my wife and she confirmed, yes there was full exposure! Some pretty lame excuses in the paper this morning, my favorite was Justin Timberlakes " costume malfunction" line.

Was a busy weekend for movie viewing.

Friday night:

Memento-The plot of this movie wouldn't work in a normal linear movie telling fashion. However, the way its told in this movie works perfectly. excellent flick!

Played some Unreal Tournament 2003. too bad the games I enjoy playing the most on the computer/PJ require the dexterity of a squirrel on speed. That remark was in no way an attempt to insult any drug addicted forest creatures that may be reading this!

saturday- Watched el Mariachi and Desperado. Both very good films. Obviously there was a big jump in PQ/SQ between the two films, but the story in both was very good. I even tried watching el Mariachi without the subtitles and I could almost understand what was being said. I can't wait until Once upon a time in Mexico comes in the mail.

Sunday- Movie night for me and my wife. We watched SWAT. All I can say is that it sounded really good. Should have saved Memento for our movie night.

There was also this football game that was on. It seemed to be a big deal.:D

Unfortunately I don't have high def yet so I watched it in standard def. on the small 65" I know a PJ and a 65" Mits but no high def. Hopefully for my birthday!

We'll be back next year!
Go Carolina Panthers!

If The Panthers have another season like they just had, I must agree, they deserve to win it all! I'll make a deal with you. You root for the Sox and I'll root for the Cats!

Ok, done argueing about un-spilled milk.

My football party was a complete success. We all ate and drank like rabid dogs. Tom and Adam drove me to drink profusely before they made the exclamation that "they are not the pesky, teasing Red Sox" and they would indeed redeem us before the world. ( I feel like I may not need psycho-therapy after all:) ).

There were 10 guys. The girls, who had initially said they wanted to watch, decided to have their own little bash upstairs. This was great, because in their absence, we could be as loud and obnoxious as we wanted to be. We got to swill alcohol till we got our collective fill without getting that little nodge with the elbow.

Aside from the annoying volume changes when the commercials came on, the presentation was flawless. I got a bunch of compliments from two or three guys that hadn't been here before.

One guy, my brother's neighbor, expected that what my brother meant was a 60" TV when he told him we were going to see it on a "big screen". He was in hog heaven.

The only dissapointment was that I chose a very bad time to hit the bathroom. I went during the imfamous "Costume Malfuction"!!!

We watched "Rear Window" last night. The last time I saw this movie was a few years ago on LD. When it comes to suspense, Alfred Hitchcock is the King! http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon14.gif http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon14.gif

A few nights back we watched "Jurassic Park". I enjoyed it better this time around on my 92" screen then when I saw it some years back on a RPTV http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon14.gif. We also watched "The Lost World: Jurassic Park". This was the first time we seen this one and was somewhat disappointed in the story line http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon2.gif . I don’t know if this script was written by the same person or not, but the story sure seemed not to have the same style as the first movie. We have not seen the 3rd one yet, so I am hoping that it is not even worst then the second one, which is the case with a lot of sequels (they just keep getting worse).

In the past couple of days we watched Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Frighteners, and Punch Drunk Love.

We love Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; the new DVD transfer's not bad. It's just a fun story that takes you back to the old days of lighthearted movies (Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, My Fair Lady, etc.).

We saw The Frighteners in the theater when it was first released; we liked it then, but it doesn't have the same appeal to us today. Strange.

Punch Drunk Love was purchased by my wife because it has the word "love" in the title :D Surprisingly, it was a better movie that I thought it would be.

The kids came over last night and couldn't decide what to watch (as usual)!

So...

The girls watched "Le Divorce" with Kate Hudson.
They seemed to like it, I guess I will have to check it out later.

The grandkids watched "Daddy Day Care" with Eddie Murphy.
There was a lot of giggling and screaming and not only from the movie.
This is another to add to my ever-growing list of movies to check out.

The boys checked out "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" with Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall, Ron and another guy.
If you can enjoy this type of humour, it was a riot!

Good old dad slipped away and watched "Lost in Translation" with Bill Murray. I like Bill Murray and I really enjoyed the movie.

Out Of Time - With Danzel Washington. Very suspenseful. The PQ was nothing to write home about, but the plot made up for it. It was sonewhat predictable, but still very good.

Afterward, we watched The Lion King in HD on ABC. My two-year-old-to-be (2-10-04) was mesmerized by the picture. Were it not for the commercials, this would have been the high point of this theatre (except for Superbowl 38 minus the halftime show)

Broke out Band of Brothers this weekend and watched the first 8 episodes on the new DLP projector. Looks even more stunning than I first remembered. Great piece of work and a must add for everyones DVD collection.

Also got to see Cabin Fever and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Cabin Fever is your typical adolescent B-rated horror flick, complete with two gratuituous sex scenes. One great line when one of the last girls realizes she is going to die and she turns to the guy and comes up with a great analogy about dying in an airplane and all you want to do is F__k the lights out of the guy you are with. Then she does. The only other aspect of this forgetable film is Rider Storm of Boy Meets World has his "coming" out as the boy the girl F__ks the lights out of.

Once Upon a Time in Mexico was interesting, stupid but cool nonetheless. I never quite got the Mariachi or Desperado but I guess you aren't supposed to. This movie fits that vein. One thing I would have liked to have had more Spanish guitar playing. I don't think it was Antonio playing it but if it was then lets have more in the next one. Its a good meaningless adolescent action film.

Last night I watched 3 movies after a full day of sledding with the kids, shopping, then more sledding on the way home. We all watched one of our favorite movies together, The Great Outdoors, with John Candy. It is a great family film. I then watched Die Another Day, which, while not up to par with my old Bond favorites, was still pretty good. I finished off the night with Notting Hill, I can watch that movie if for no other reason than to look at Julia Roberts. She is just stunning in that movie. Beyond that I really enjoy the humor, especially any scene with Hugh Grants roommate Spike. I know many would probably consider this a chick flick, but it is a movie I can watch over and over again, if only to fall in love with Julia over and over.

Also, while shopping today I walked into a Bose store out of curiosity. They had a scene from Drumline running on a loop on a Phillips HDTV that was just unbelieveable. I asked what type of DVD player was being used and it was their DVD/CD player through Svideo, not even progressive scan! I would have sworn it was a HD feed! I think I will be heading to Hollywood Video to try to pick up a used copy tonite, that scene alone is a great way to show off a system.

We watched "About Schmidt" last night. We found this to be a very sad movie. While I don't find this movie ever to be worth a second viewing, I did like seeing Jack Nicholson expanding his acting ability beyond any type of role that he has ever done before. Saturday - Open Range with Costner, Duvall, and Benning. Plot was so so, but characters, dialog, and some great cinematography made it an enjoyable movie.

I know what I'll be watching on September 21st!!

My son is (forcibly) requesting Lion King 1.5. Tomorrow will be one of those rare week-day movie nights to accomodate his demand, er.. request. If I can save time by getting to Bestbuy during lunch, I may have time to watch Intolarable Cruelty.

David, I too enjoyed Open Range. A welcome departure from the current crop of "video game/ extended MTV-video fare. Awesome cinematography!

I just bought "Lion King 1 1/2" today at Best Buy for my boys. We got the snacks out and really enjoyed it. It was very creative how they "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead"ed the old familiar "Lion King" story. It was very funny and had my young boys screaming with laughter from start to finish.

I was also pleasantly surprised that they got the original voice cast back together for it. Young kids will love it and us older kids at heart will enjoy pointing out the scenes that we remember from L.K.1.

I also bought today: "Under The Tuscan Sun" (Beautiful Italy & Diane Lane, need I say more?!?), "Seabiscuit" (I still haven't seen it yet) and "Bruce Almighty", which I thought was well done.

Markito,

Is Lion King 1 1/2 similar in PQ to the original? Is it 16X9 anamorphic?

Watched "The Producers" (1968) last night. I never saw this movie until now. I told my wife that Gene Wilder was in it, but he was not coming up on the beginning screen credits so I was beginning to wonder if I was wrong. At the end of the credits his named appeared as co-starring. I looked it up on the Internet Database and this was only Wilder's third movie, third one right after "Bonnie and Clyde", which I did not even know he was in.
The movie was anamorphic (1.85) with an excellent transfer. While I am not a big fan of Mel Brooks movies, I did find it entertaining enough to justify the $5.50 I paid for the movie at Walmart.

Gus, L.K. 1.5 is anamorphic (1.85) so it fills the whole 16:9 screen. Yay!!!!!!The PQ and surround sound doesn't seem quite as good as the recent DVD release of the original, but still quite good.

We watched Second Hand Lions the past weekend. I knew nothing about this movie. I stumbled upon it at Blockbuster, they had several of them on the shelf. Kind of looked like I was the only one renting this flick. I was really surprised how good this movie was. It's a great family movie, very enjoyable and funny.

If you like the slasher flicks like this, this one was ok. Not the best but certainly not the worst.

What I found most amazing was the FULL 7.1 surround. Friggin outstanding. had me on the edge of my Lovesac!

Lost in Translation - What a wonderful movie. Bill Murray doesn't deserve best actor - he deserves MVP. I don't know if the movie works without him. Is there another actor who could pull off that role?

Open Range - This was one of the first movies we watched with the new sub (HSU STF-2). Wow. There are some serious subwoofer moments in this film. My wife finally understood why we needed the big ugly box.

Under the Tuscan Sun - Beautiful scenery and very strong acting by Diane Lane couldn't save this movie for me. Way too formulaic.

I wasn't expecting much but the story line is OK and I was amazed by the PQ. Maybe it is just the new XP30 compared to my old Apex, but I was very impressed. Sarah Jessica Parker is also in this film and she looks great, it was made before her Sex in the City gauntness and while still thin is much more attractive than I think she currently is.

Tuesday - New DVD Releases

Runaway Jury
"Set in New Orleans, this is the story of a mysterious man, Nick Easter (Cusack) who gets himself on the jury of a landmark case against a gun manufacturer in an attempt to influence the other jury members to vote a certain way. Meanwhile, Easter's girlfriend, Marlee (Weisz), tries to swindle the attorneys (Hackman, Hoffman) to pay millions of dollars to have the jury return a verdict friendly to their clients. The case involves the widow of a man killed in an office shooting suing the gun manufacturer of the weapon that was used, under the claim that they knew the store that sold it was not obeying the laws about firearm sales."

Dickie Roberts, Former Child Star
"Dickie Roberts is a 35-year old former child star. Now an out-of-work actor turned parking valet, Dickie is desperate to audition for a great role that could revitalize his career, but the part requires him to play a "normal" guy. Problem is, Dickie is anything but normal. He decides to hire a family to adopt him so he can relive his childhood and, in essence, grow up from scratch."

Masked and Anonymous
"Set somewhere, sometime in an unnamed country, torn by civil war with unclear battle lines, impresario Uncle Sweetheart is scheming to find a headliner for a benefit concert. The purpose of the concert is unclear and the charity that the profits go to is its promoter's pockets. Nina Veronica is the veteran TV producer whose job it is to make sure that the concert is an international spectacle--yet her task is impossible to achieve. And when Uncle Sweetheart manages to get the iconic cult star Jack Fate released from prison to perform, the stage is set for tumult."

If you thought Mississippi Burning was good you should check out a movie called Rosewood. All I can say is that it was totally captivating. Even my kids were on the edge of their seats on this one. Like Mississippi Burning, it too was based on a factual historical event. Probably many of us never knew occurred. The movie stars Ving Rhames (he is excellent) and Jon Voight. Check it out, it is definitely worthy.

I went to the theater this weekend and saw an animated feature that seems to have recently broken out of the Art Theater circuit: "The Triplets of Bellville". I highly recommend it. Lots of quirky characters. Lots of fun.

Sick all weekend so Valentine's Day sucked. We just stayed home all weekend and watched movies.

So much talk on the forum recently about Jurassic Park, we decided to watch all three. JP 1 & 2 Friday night, 3 Saturday with a box of chocolates. Really enjoyed it. We were particularly surprised by the sound design on JP2, and how creative the surrounds were used. Doesn't change though that it's a terrible movie.

Sunday afternoon we watched "Gerry." What can I say? Much of it was excruciatingly boring, but we both were still somehow moved at the end. Was worth it. And we love the music by Arvo Pärt, which came out a few years ago. It complimented the scenery well. It would be a great movie to put on with a timer at bed time to help lull you to sleep.

Sunday night was "Lost in Translation." Just about perfect, we thought.

Well, we finally got around to watching "Armageddon" last night. I have had it in my library for about two years now, but since we have so many other movies and are so busy with other things we are always playing catch-up with what everyone else has already seen. The movie was very entertaining and a fun ride. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon14.gif

We also watched "Jurassic Park" a couple weeks back. This was the second time we saw it, but the first time in our theater room on the large screen. I wanted to wait until the bass shakers were connected to the seats before seeing it, which they did help in making a big difference when watching this movie! http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon14.gif

Last Tuesday: Lion King 1/12. Kids loved it. Wife enjoyed it. I fell asleep. Not because of the movie, just that last tues was a loong work day for me. I was DOG tired when I got home. I forgot to get the movie and my son took me to task. I had to make a u-turn and drive 10 miles to Bestbuy. I actually tryed to get it at Ballbusters..er.. Blockbuster first which is a block away. I should have known better. Their price was $29.99, can you believe it?!! I almost payed it. I would have paid it had I been alone. But I couldn't let my son see them defeat me like that, so I sucked it up and got back in my car.

Friday: Re-watched Attack Of The Clones with my son.

Saturday: Had our friends come over (The one that needs an explosion every 30 seconds to keep his interest, so a good movie was out of the question) So we watched Scary Movie II.

Today: In The Cut with Meg Ryan. All I can say is wow. How did they get innocent, sweet little Meg to take this role?? Not that I'm complaining:D
I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Also today: Intolerable Cruelty. I liked it too, but I guess after watching In The Cut, it was kind of a let-down.

Jim - I wouldn't put it in best picture category - I thought it was interesting, very funny in a few places, and very good on mood.

I'm rooting for LOTR: Return of the King for best picture - not because of itself, but because of the the entire project, which I look at as one movie. If I were to pick on merits alone, I would select "Mystic River".

Watched "Gosford Park" last night. It was a little slow getting started, but it turned out just ok.

Did anyone else notice down in the lower right corner of the screen, in the black border area, there was some kind of logo embedded in this movie? I could not make out what the logo was, but I was very disappointed, to say the least, that this could be the beginning of a trend of placing logos on our DVD movies. This was something that I feared we could start seeing in the near future. I just hope that it never takes off like what they did with TV broadcasting logos. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon8.gif

Note: I just check this movie out on my bedroom DVD player and TV, and i did not see the logo there. However, I think that that was due to some overscan. The logo was very near the bottom right border on my HT screen, so if my bedroom TV had any overscan at all, then the logo would not show.

Starscomeout, I really got into Gosford Park on the 2nd viewing. I've watched it a couple of times since, and it's now one of my favorites. Emily Watson made it a pleasant experience as well.

Watched Masked and Anonymous Wednesday and again Thursday. This is a love-it-or-hate-it movie, and I loved it, but then I'm a big Dylan fan. The movie, like his best songs, is better appreciated with repeated viewing/listening. For anyone who can appreciate movies that are out of the mainstream and a bit unusual, this indie's a gem. Watch it for Dylan, watch it for the songs, watch it for the ton of big-name stars, etc., but watch it. It bears a Carnivale-esque touch, though this was made well before Carnivale. Watching John Goodman, Big Dan Teague in O Brother, Where Art Thou? came to mind, as if he'd stepped out of O Brother into this film, picking up some new wiles on the way. Penelope Cruz made me think of Bruce Willis' girlfriend in Pulp Fiction. Val Kilmer was excellent as always, and I've never been a Mickey Rourke fan until now. There's quite a bit of philosophy and words of wisdom if you let yourself pick up on it/them, and a few comic moments as well (watch Goodman's few seconds in the trailer with the hand-held fan). There's some excellent acting and directing that shouldn't be missed, and the director's commentary is a must for fans of the movie. Not as avant-garde or disjointed as I was led to believe, this somewhat ensemble film is a must for Dylan fans. A small portion of the rest of you will also discover a new-found favorite.

maxman,
This does seem like the type of movie that would require more then one viewing to pickup on things that that was missed on the first viewing. There seems to be to many things going on and to many different people to have taken it in the first time. It seemed as if the movie was going nowhere for about the first hour, and then you find yourself more drawn into it.

Disappointing Saturday night.

28 days later. Not what I was expecting. It wasn't a bad movie, I was just not in the mood for it I guess. then I watched The Medallion. I am usually a fan of Jackie Chan movies, but this one was bad. The humor was really forced and not funny at all.

After that I finally gave in and watched the Season 2 finale of Alias. I have been putting this off until I Season 3 comes out on DVD, but I just found out one of my friends TIVO'd every show this season and backed them up to DVD so I will be getting caught up very quick. A short battle ensues, where Arthur, relatively unencumbered by armor, easily dodges the slow and heavy strikes by the black knight. Finally, Arthur dodges a strike, steps aside, and cuts the black knight's left arm off with his sword. Blood spurts from the knight's open shoulder.

Arthur: Now stand aside, worthy adversary.

Black Knight: 'Tis but a scratch.

Arthur: A SCRATCH? Your arm's off!

Black Knight: No it isn't!

Arthur: Well what's that then? (pointing to the arm lying on the ground)

Black Knight: I've had worse.

Arthur: You LIAR!

Black Knight: Come on, you pansy!

Randy,
We watched "Bend It Like Beckham" for the first time that same night.
I have wanted to see it for a long time, and finally got around to it.
All I can say is, what a great movie!
My wife doesn't even like soccer and we both loved it.
What a great example of being pulled between two cultures.

Once Upon a Time in America.

PQ 4/5 Very good, excellent colors, very nice!

Sound: 3.5/5 Very good effects. Bass hit or miss. Sometimes powerful and sometimes weak. Dialog a bit forward and spitty. Some parts unintelligible. Good surround effects.

Movie. Same old shoot 'em up. Lots of gun fire....

Friday night........After going to every video store in town searching for The Missing and Matchstick Men, we finally "settled" on Radio! What an amazing movie. We had always planned on seeing this one in the theaters, but always thought of something we thought we would like better. Now we both agree that we have to have it for the collection.

Saturday Night.......still searching for The Missing and Matchstick Men, we were at the last video store in town, and had Under the Tuscan Sun and House of the Dead. As we were checking out, the guy behind the counter strongly advised us against The House of the Dead. Now, being extremely disappointed and frustrated because we can't find the two movies we REALLY WANT, then being told that one of the choices we made we shouldn't waste our money on, we just wanted to get in the car, get up to highway speed, then push each other out. I went back to the shelves, in search of SOMETHING good to watch, when my g/f decided that me asking if either one of those movies had been turned in wasn't enough. She had to ASK AGAIN.......and boy am I glad that she did! Between the time that we came in and that moment, someone had turned in Matchstick Men!! This was a good movie, we both enjoyed it, but I think the frustration and determination of finding it has us all worked up, so even if it had been the best movie ever, we still would have had some sort of let down.

Girlfriends note......Johnny fell asleep within 20 minutes of us watching Under the Tuscan Sun, but I thought it was a good movie. One part of the movie that I didn't quite get, and maybe I am trying to make more out of it than was meant to be, but what is with the water spigot coming out of the middle of the wall? All I have to say is, if we don't find The Missing REAL soon, I'm just gonna go buy it so the agony will be over.....although now it is like a challenge, so buying it would be like cheating or giving up, and that's no fun!

Friday night was Once Upon a Time in Mexico. I thought it was a pretty decent movie. Nothing spectacular. Lots of guns and explosions to keep it interesting.

Saturday I watched The Patriot. I haven't seen this movie in a while and wanted to see it on the PJ. Great movie all around aside from it being somewhat formulaic.

I'm still waiting for Netflix to send me Open Range and the Missing. It's starting to get irritating actually.

My kids watched Lion King 1 1/2 again! It's amazing how many times they can watch the same thing....wait, how many times have I seen Star Wars?:D

Tonight Cheryl and I watched "School of Rock". A little slow in the beginning... but things pick up and the movie is a fun ride and a rockin' good time. What truly makes the movie enjoyable, aside from Jack Black's zanny rendition of AC/DC's classic "Long way to the top" is that all these kids are truly talented musicians. No lipsync'ing and air guitar acting here, these kids are the real deal. Great for kids and adults alike... the film scores a PG13 rating for "drug references and some adult language"...but I have seen and heard far worse on prime time television.

I give it a Thumbs up... or better yet... a rock and roll fist!

I give it a Thumbs up... or better yet... a rock and roll fist! I agree. We went with the family while on vacation together in the fall and we all loved it. Really infectious, and it's a movie that really knows and loves r&r.

Tonight we watched the superbit version of Vertical Limit. Holy CANOLLI!!! I believe the picture quality was the finest I've seen in my home from a live-action standard DVD film. I've noticed the 3-D effect on many CG animated titles before, but this is the first time I've seen a convincing 3-d effect on a live-action movie--there were shots that gave me vertigo. I was also stunned by the incredible textures and skin detail. Not just on a couple of close-ups, but throughout. In just about every scene, regardless of how far the camera is pulled back, you can make out great facial-detail. Absolutely beautiful. The movie itself was also better than I expected, probably because I've heard so many bad things about it.

Overall, just a great surprise. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if it's the transfer quality, an increased bit-rate, or what. But it's a hell of a great looking DVD. It has convinced me that I need to pick up the SB version of "Starship Troopers."

Saturday afternoon - Watched "The Core" for some kill some brain cells fun. It was better than I expected but 100% unbelievable.

Saturday night - We watched "School Of Rock". Pretty decent, not quite as good as I think Jack Black can be. Good soundtrack and pretty funny.

Last weekend - "The Missing" - Good flick, had no idea it was Ron Howard until I saw his brother playing the sheriff and then sure enough the credits had Ron directing.

last couple of days:

a few episodes from Starsky & Hutch.
never had much nostalgia for this show, so just on its own merits, its pretty thin stuff.
good chemistry from the leads, but i won't be keeping this one long.

Dawn of The Dead
new AB disc is superb and film is still a whole lot of fun.
been waiting a long time for this and it was worth the wait.

Shadow Of A Doubt
not a big fan of Hitchcock, but i do like some of his early American B&Ws, and i LOVE SOAD.
one of my favorite films of all time, probably.
i bought this disc the moment it streeted about 3 yrs ago, and this is the first i've gotten around to watching it.

Watched Dante's Peak last night. We hadn't seen this movie in a couple of years, and were surprised at how good the sound was; nice bass effects. The surrounds weren't used as much as some other movies, but they added a nice presence to the soundstage. And the movie itself was enjoyable; much better (IMO) that the other volcano movie that came out the same time - Tommy Lee Jones's Volcano.

Hadn't been able to relax and watch anything in the theater for a while but finally got to watch something. I chose "The Missing" since many of you seemed to like it. Maybe I expected too much but I was somewhat dissappointed. Very predictable movie and kindof cliche in exploring a forgotten father/daugther relationship. After seeing that it was a Ron Howard movie I was especially dissappointed since I expected more from him. Oh well, this movie is not what you might be expecting.

Saturday we had some friends over. I moved all my gear into the living room as our dedicated room is just too small. (Won't be doing that again anytime soon!)

We watched School of Rock and Matchstick Men.

School of Rock was pretty decent. Being a teacher I really had to suspend my disbelief as this guy would have been found out before first recess. And the whole stuffy teacher conversations in the staff room were very unauthentic. I thought the soundtrack was excellent, but my subwoofer didn't get much of a work out.

Matchstick Men: We all seemed to like it despite figuring it out pretty early-on. My subwoofer really liked this movie!

Just as good as the first few times I've seen it. Plus, one of my buds has never seen the theater before so it was cool to see him enjoy it so much.

Last night I sat down to watch "The Italian Job". Ehhh... take it or leave it. I was hoping for more character development/motivation aside from the standard arrive-for-the-meeting-introductions.

Cheers!

Just finished watching "Daredevil", which was a pretty enjoyable movie http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon14.gif. It looked like at the end, as they do with most superhero movies, that they left it open for the possibility of a sequel. I for one would enjoy seeing a sequel done. I am not a big Ben Affleck fan, but I thought he pulled this part off real well. However with him being one of the most sought after actors today, I wonder if he would even be willing to do a sequel, or if they would have to get someone else, which may or may not be as good in the part as what Affleck was.

BTW, The movie had a great transfer and some excellent surround sound.

Apparently, over the weekend my significant other saw parts of "Meet Joe Black" on TV, and she wanted to see the whole thing. God help me, but I own the Ultimate edition because it has "Death Takes a Holiday" (an infinitely better film) on the second disc. So Sunday night we spent a punishing three hours "meeting" Joe Black. She loved it. I hated it. And unfortunately it's not the first time I've seen it. We both were crying at the end; I don't know why she was crying, but I was because I couldn't believe I've actually spent six hours of my life watching "Meet Joe Black." Imagine--one quarter of a full day.

If you haven't seen it, avoid it at all costs. I'm not kidding you. It makes "The English Patient" seem action-PACKED.

However, with march madness starting soon, I will leverage the experience to watch much basketball. I figure that three hours enduring "Meet Joe Black" is worth about 20 hours of college basketball viewing. And that's a conservative estimate.

After unpacking my new pb6100 this last week. So far, I've watched:

Finding Nemo
LOTR: FOTR
Star Wars: AOTC
Braveheart (VHS)
The Apprentice (NBC)
Die Hard (TNT)
Nick @ Night

The DVDs (first three) were spectacular! and Braveheart was watchable. But there were noticeable rainbows on Die Hard and the VHS. I saw absolutely none on the DVD's. I am assuming that the better the quality of the media DVD vs VHS vs TV, the more likely you are to see rainbows. That is my experience so far.

Movies I'm looking forward to watching in the near future:
Kiss of the Dragon
The Professional
The Matrix
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

I watched The Musketeer last night. Very forgettable performances by everyone except for Tim Roth as Febre the Man in Black. I sometimes felt that the production company ran out of money after they built the very nice sets and hired Tim Roth, so they settled for whatever inexpensive actors they could find. That, and the "Musketeer meets Jackie Chan" fight scenes doomed the movie for me.

Since I got The Musketeer along with The Mummy Returns (which I really wanted) as a 2-for in Costco, I don't feel gypped but rather disappointed, for I think The Musketeer could have been a really good movie.

One word: thrilling.

This is an incredible filmed stage musical - I've seen countless productions of this show from high school to college productions. And I've seen shows on Broadway and in London. Haven't had time to watch too many movies but I watched Cold Creek Manor the other night and boy was I dissappointed. I was looking forward to a thriller and got some poorly written horribly acted movie. Has the writing and directing of movies gotten worse or what. It was comical to see the rooftop scene where the villain is "held" down by a rope. Look at how much slack is in the rope and how high up the villains head is. A quadriplegic could have slipped under that rope. So many rough ends in the plot that it didn't transition well from scene to scene at all. Then at the "devils tomb" the villain sends Sharon Stone down the well and doesn't wait around for Dennis Quaid even after he slashes the tires to their vehicle and hears the screams for help from Sharon Stone. Presumably he goes back to the house to wait for him. Why??????

Well I may have spoiled the movie for whoever reads this but you will thank me because you should not watch this movie. It is horrid and doesn't even rate in Hollywoods B rated movies.:(

The Missing looked good but was a little slow in some parts. The shaman was a pretty scary character.

The last 30 minutes made the movie.

Darthopus,
I teach 6th grade math. Had been teaching 7th grade for the last 6 years, boy, what a difference a year makes!
Once we are done with season 2 ( my wife is also now hooked ) we will have to wait for season 3 to come out on DVD so we can see it in order. What season is the program currently in?? If this year is season 3 maybe we can catch the reruns this summer.

The last movie I watched was school of rock. I thought it was pretty good, it reminded me of myself back in elementary school (I was a big time over-achiever). It had a lot of those "feel good moments".

Alias is currently halfway though Season 3. It is quite good, but not as good as the first two seasons in my opinion. But I still enjoy it.
I'm planning on buying the Season One DVD set to relive the good old days.

Friday night I spent some time getting my new Radeon working and then tried to watch/finish Lost in Translation. I kept waiting for it to become "good". In reality it was just slow.

saturday night my wife and I watched "Thirteen" and we kind of wished we hadn't. It's not that it wasn't good, because it was very good. It just made us really fear our kid's teenage years.

We then tried to watch Dickie Roberts and got 39 minutes and 17 seconds into. This was the first time I have ever regretted wasting a Netflix rental on a movie.

I then watched "Radio". This was a pretty good movie, but nothing spectacular.

mjmchase I would agree with Markito that this season is not as good as the first two of alias, but it is still better then most of what else is on TV. I would suggest waiting until it comes out on DVD as each episode still builds upon previous ones.

I am looking forward to ana anamorphic version of Titanic some day.

Cat in the Hat was horrific!!! (except for Paris Hilton's sexy little cameo)

David Gale was good but a bit disturbing.... Yep Jeff, I thought David Gale was an abomination. Just blatantly stupid Hollywood Crap. The characters and just the whole essence of the movie was all wrong. I hated the concept.

Now Seabiscuit was a good movie. Nice concept and well done. I thought it was going to be some sappy contrived hollywood junk but it actually was a captivating movie.

Recently watched:

21 Grams, I thought this was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.

Quicksand, I thought that this was one of the worst moives I have seen in a while.

Runaway Jury, I thought was ok, but not great. We had tried to go see this in the theaters and left early, but it was the late showing and we were both very tired. Decided to give it another chance, so I rented it, but wasn't all that impressed.

Dumb and Dumberer, all I can say is the first ones are always better than the sequels.

Watched Underworld last night... It was OK - just OK. The last scene pretty much went against the premise of the entire movie I thought. Maybe they'll explain that in the sequel - or maybe I just missed something.

Last weekend we watched Cabin Fever. We were hoping for a good scary movie, instead we were treated to the most incoherent, disjointed, no plot, piece of crap we've seen in quite some time.

Last night we watched "House of Sand & Fog".
I had wanted to see it since it first hit the theaters, but never got around to it.

I was blown away! What an amazing display of acting. Ben Kingsley is soooo talented. Jennifer Connolly is incredibly beautiful: white trash hitting rock bottom never looked so good.

The story was deep and meaningful and it gets you a little mad.

We were really moved.

Brickie, Secondhand Lions is an excellent family movie movie that could easily be a Disney movie. A "must see" for the whole family with excellent acting. I can fully appreciate "wondering if it is any good". I think it is a "great" family movie and I would list it as one of the more enjoyable movies I have seen in the last six months.

We also recently saw, Somethings Gotta Give. The Oscar hype is well earned. Another movie I give a "must see" rating to.

While the wife and eldest daughter are away for a trip in Europe my littlest daughter (12yrs old) and I sat down to "The School of Rock". Cool and entertaining. Maybe not a must see but fun and entertaining. The in-laws stopped by and brought "out of Time". Gotta Love Denzel Washington. I never get tired of watching his movies. He has got to be one of the greatest actors without being over the top like Nicholson or Depp. There is something about him that makes all his movies enjoyable to watch. Even as a bad guy in Training Days you have to admire his acting. Oh, the movie. It was a good thriller all the way to the end where it got a little cliche. But I won't give away the ending because you should watch this movie.

Friday night I watched 28 grams. This was an excellent movie and I felt that Benicio delToro(sp?) did a phenomenal job.

Saturday night was "The Rundown" What can I say? I think "The Rock" is a pretty good actor and the movie was very enjoyable if a bit cliched. I could have done without the Arnold cameo though. Don't get me wrong as I love the movies Arnold has done. It just seemed a little forced.

I then wathced "Resident Evil" I didn't expect much and got just a bit more than that. Nothing great, but entertaining regardless.

Last night my wife and I watched "Intolerable Cruelty". This was just "Ok".

Last week:
The Gods Must be Crazy. All around good movie, and a 9ft diagonel screen really brings it alive.

Sunday night, watched RunDown. Entertaining movie, but I was disappointed with the audio commentary tracks; DD audio track was good, the commentary tracks were scratchy and not understandable. I rented it, and maybe the disc was just scratched.

Last night watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Unfortunately, I have the copy that is letterboxed, so the image wasn't as large as it could have been. Still, good looking movie.

I have to agree that the first Matrix is still the best, but I do think that "Revolutions" is actually quite a good movie.

Without giving away the ending I think the brothers did a great job with the "Neo" character and his role in the ending. I think a lot of people were expecting a typical Hollywood type ending and that's why many did not like it.

I enjoyed watching it this week in my theater and wish I had watched it at the theaters.

I started watching "The Missing" and really enjoyed the first hour. The time change is messing with me and I had to postpone finishing it until tonight. I thought that both Kate Blanchett and Tommy Lee Jones were excellent in this.

Watched "Rundown" with the Rock. When I first saw the movie I thought no way I want to see this crap. I was wrong! The Rock can act and he has Charisma on the screen. I thouroughly enjoyed the movie and the way he acts. I don't think he is the next Arnold rather I think he is in a league all his own and will create a different kind of action Genre. Surprisingly I really like him. I also saw, well saw again the Ghost and the Darkness. Fantastic acting and a great storyline which was well put together. Val Kilmer is another of those great unsung actors who surprise me with the roles he plays. He was superb in this one and so is Michael Douglas and John Kani who plays Samuel was excellent. Great cast good story worth watching.

We were really moved. I watched it last weekend as well. Absolutely amazing. How was this movie not more popular when it was released in theaters? I watched it with what I would consider casual movie watchers who have little tolerance for what they consider "art films," and everyone loved it. Maybe the basic premise of a dispute over home ownership doesn't sound very interesting. But it's more tense and thrilling than most "thrillers", and as Markito said very moving. I can recommend it highly to anyone.

If you have read the book, then I think you'll enjoy the movie - although as always with an adaptation, there are some glaring decrepancies. I moves fast, and it's entertaining. What a great weekend here in the Windy City! Weather in the 70's to 80's, went to a Cubs game, sat on the porch and ate ice cream, and watched a few flicks in the evening.

Friday was Spy Kids 3-D, which I actually liked based on pure spectacle. The 3-D effects worked VERY well on my plasma (and I wasn't about to touch the picture controls, since it's ISF calibrated).

Saturday night Matrix Revolutions which I thought was infinitely better than Reloaded. Lots of fun, although I'm still not completely sure I understood exactly why everything was happening because of the kludge that was Reloaded.

Tonight (Sunday): The new 2-disc version of A Room with a View. I love the movie. I think it's quite funny and one of the best period films ever mde, although no doubt most on the forum probably hate it. The video is a little soft, but for a near 20 year old film, it looks superb, and the new 5.1 DD track makes the dialogue very clear. Highly recommended for fans of the film.

Have a great week!

Last night we watched "Kill Bill"

The "look" of the picture is great. If you are a Tarantino fan then you will love this movie.

The scenes were very dramatic, edgy, just the right mix of tension and rawness you would expect from one of Tarantino's movies.

My favorite scene was the Yakuza council meeting with Lucy Liu. You have to see it to believe it!

Sit back and enjoy the wild ride!

Luckily we watched "Timeline" before "Kill Bill".

Finally broke a 2-week dry spell (OK, I was on vacation for a week, but still, no movies!).

Friday afternoon I left work early and took a couple of guys with me. We watched Kill Bill V. 1 - great fun. I have no idea when I'll get to the theater to see V2.

Then my youngest daughter had a friend over and wanted a movie, so I watch with them: Princess Mononoke - very good (Spirited Away is still my favorite from this director).

Then Saturday night, after a day of yard work (back still hurts), same daughter wanted to watch another movie and selected "Akira" - I warned her and we got only 15 minutes into it before she lost interest. We switched to "Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn" - always a favorite.

I had forgotten that I'd let her sit with me when we watched "Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country" - so naturally when Spock died (seriously, that's not a spoiler, is it?) she asked "how can he be dead? He was in the other movie!"

Friday night I started watching "Once Upon a Time in the West". I didn't get to finish as my reinstallation of Windows finished about 45 minutes into the movie. It was nice to have my computer working again and I just couldn't wait to get the HTPC part of it working. I will try to finish it this weekend.

Saturday I watched Pulp Fiction. This was the first time I had seen this movie on DVD, desipite buying it over a year ago. It wasn't as bloddy as I remember it. A great film and I can't wait to get Kill Bill V1 this week.

Randy, I loved Spirited Away, but Princess Mononoke is my favorite of his films. I tried watching Castle in the Sky, but I wasn't in the mood at the time I guess. You just gave me a reminder that I need to give it another shot this weekend.

I went crazy this weekend and watched 6 movies! (couch-bound recovering from some minor surgery)

Matrix Revolutions
Kill Bill v.1
The House of Sand and Fog
21 Grams
Matchstick Men
Gothika

I didn't find any of these to be unwatchable - but 21 grams was a close call. I think it would have been just as compelling and 'artsy' if it was sequenced in a bit more conventional way. If it were not for the fantastic acting job of Sean Penn, this movie would have probably lost me before I got drawn in enough to see how it ended. I almost turned it off anyway, but I stuck with it, and in the end I'm glad I did, but I still don't know if I'd really recommend it unless someone said they were looking for a movie with great acting and they didn't care about anything else.

Watched House of S and F on the recommendation of the folks here. It did not disappoint. Wonderful acting. The only thing that I disagree about is feeling sympathy for J. Connelly's (sp) character. She brought this entire mess on herself, and brought down a hard-working family struggling to make it while doing the right thing. A great movie though.

The rest of the movies I saw were pretty good too - not enough time to comment on them all...
