View Full Version : Now Showing - What We Watched
Daniel Bishop 04-22-04, 08:10 AM The kids wanted to watch "Win a Date with Tad Hamilton"
Ok, Ok, Ok...I liked it too.
Standard Guy likes girl, girl likes another guy...and it was fun to watch.
Next for Dad - "Master and Commander"
Great movie, enjoyed the action, interaction between the Captain and the Doctor, and a gool looking movie to boot.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre ('03).
not a big slasher fan , and not a militant fan of the original, but i was still surprised that i enjoyed this. the last act is derivative chase stuff, but the build up is good and the cast sells the material well- and the disc has exceptional a/v.
Freaks & Geeks
purposefully avoided this show when it was on, even though i was hearing good things about it, because i did not want to wallow in 'cute' 80s nostalgia, but i broke down and decided to finally check the show out (i'm a sucker for the underdog nature of this thing finally getting its dvd release- and one that apparnetlyhasn't disappointed its hardcore fans) watched 5 eps so far and i have to admit i'm enjoying it very much.
glad i bought it.
Dick Van Dyke S3
enjoying these eps much more than the material from the first season (which i didn't like much at all).
a heads up for Miyazaki (Princess Mononke, Spirited Away) fans- Nausicaa is coming out soon in a 2 disc set (like Castle and Kiki)- still my favorite of his movies, and highly recommended if you've never seen it before.
kevinp8192 04-24-04, 04:09 AM Watched Darkness Falls, and after all the bad reviews here and elsewhere, I was ready to hate it. But it was one of those movies that is really stupid, but I kind of liked anyway. Maybe just because I'm such a genre movie fan I give these things extra slack.
There's a high body count, but being PG-13 with really no gore and very little blood, it's perfect slumber party fodder for kids ~13 years old. There is none of the brutality of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Jeepers Creepers, or The Ring, just plenty of gotcha-type fun house scares, and a kind of Grimm's fairy tale quality that seems to tap into kid fears (imagine Gremlins as a straight horror film, and you kind of get the idea). To make it even more kid/slumber party friendly, it flies by at 75 minutes, (well, 86 minutes if you include a full 11 minutes of filler end credits).
It has an ace DD track, with lots of bass and a shreiking monster that seems to come from just about anywhere in the room. For us adults, the shreiking loses its effect after about 20 times, but hey it sounds great anyway. I thought it was a dumb & fun horror-flick.
MyGrain 04-24-04, 10:33 AM Watched X2 last night.
Have seen it a few times already and originally at a theatre but it still didn't disappoint. I'm a big fan of the comic to movie thing.
Phreak511 04-24-04, 04:08 PM Watched Matrix Revolutions: Not much of a story in the third movie BUT
Some of the best CG I've ever seen - The Machine army / Human battle scene is unforgettable.
CptnRandy 04-25-04, 10:21 AM Double feature last night:
Whale Ridder - good movies, but my 11 year old daughter didn't like it as much as I thought she would.
Out of Time - my wife and I enjoyed this one - It was fun watching Denzel dig him self deeper and deeper into trouble.
Randy
Master and Commander
I'm glad I didn't buy the CE, but I wish I had just rented it. This is the kind of moive I ordinarily like, and I was disappointed. As was my wife. Still, it is worth watching.
How to lose a guy in 10 days
Not as bad as I thought it would be. Guys, if you take turns picking movies and your wife/GF picks this one, no worries.
Daniel Bishop 04-26-04, 08:20 AM Rerun Weekend
Kill Bill
Enjoyed it more the second-go-round
Her Alibi
My wife loves Tom Selleck and we got a kick out of this fun flick
Blast from the Past
The scenes from the 60's brought back may memories
Daniel
MyGrain 04-26-04, 11:59 AM Watched the Sharks go up 2 games on the Aves.
Watched some hoop, and watched The Italian Job {the recent one} Wife hadn't seen it yet. Fun.
darthopus 04-26-04, 02:13 PM Friday night I watched "Kill Bill V1". It was quite entertaining and has made me need to see V2 in the theaters.
Saturday night my wife and I watched "Duplex" with Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore. This was actually pretty funny if not a little predictable.
I then watched "Buffalo Soldiers". It wasn't a bad movie, but there was no real point to the plot.
later,
Don

mark dibona 04-28-04, 06:26 AM We watched Master and Commander this weekend. Both my wife and I really liked it. good story, great action.
Also saw Timeline. The wife fell asleep, but I stuck it out till the end. Would hsve made a good TV movie.
kevinp8192 04-29-04, 08:45 AM Watched with a friend and her seven year old daughter the rather alarming Return to Oz from 1985. I hadn't seen it, but saw that Disney (quietly) released a new anamorphic transfer on February 3, 2004 so picked it up on the cheap and thought it would be a good opportunity to watch it. Bad idea!
We had to explain to the terrified tyke (possible light spoilers):
1. That we thought late 19th century electro-shock therapy which Dorothy is threatened with probably would have "tickled."
2. That the witch who could literally pull her own head off and exchange it with any number of other heads in her collection wasn't really all that scary (even though I actually thought it was disconcerting myself). If you're one of those Wiccan/underground/pseudo-goth Fairuza Balk groupies, it's a must have. This is a dreary and morbid film that fits in perfectly with her image.
PQ starts out terrible for first 25 minutes with TONS of scratches & dirt, but seems to clear up as the film goes on. Still an awful transfer, even if it is anamorphic. DD 5.1 track is great though for a 20 year old film. Tons of LFE rumbling.
ckolchak 04-29-04, 03:46 PM finally got around to watching my copy of Taxi Driver.
i 've never been a great fan of Martin Scorcese or especially Bobby DeNiro, but i did really get into todays viewing.
i thought the PQ of the disc was excellant, and no complaints with the sound either.
Hermans score was spellbinding.
after that watched another title thats i bought a while back and never got around to pulling out before- 10 Things I Hate About You.
i had seen it before as a rental and was suitably impressed enough to buy it outright, but i was extremely disappointed watching it today.
i still enjoy the chemistry between Ledger and Stiles, but the rest of it felt like a cliched slog this time 'round.
as far as teen-themed material goes, Freaks & Geeks has set the bar pretty high, and stuff like 10 Things... doesn't come close anymore.
starscomeout 05-02-04, 04:07 PM We watched "Master and Commander" last night. We both enjoyed this movie a lot and it has some of the best surround sound I have heard in some time. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon14.gif http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon14.gif

CptnRandy 05-02-04, 05:18 PM Last night it was "Big Fish" - a gentle and very enjoyable movie.
brickie 05-02-04, 06:29 PM Randy , i may pick this up on your thumbs up.. Had passed not really to sure this would be any good..
Went to theater and saw Mean Girls..Yeah not at home, but was a good movie..A little strong language for the younger set but a good teen movie.

Darkshadow 05-02-04, 07:45 PM Last night was Matrix Revolutions. A great movie in Dolby.
Darkshadow 05-02-04, 07:48 PM Randy where do you work?
Matrix Reloaded. Yeah, I'm a bit behind. I liked it a lot. Great action and effects. I'm looking forward to renting Revolutions.
kevinp8192 05-03-04, 01:06 AM Started watching Season 1 of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" on Friday, and spent a good part of the weekend watching it. I'm now already in Season 2. I'm hooked. I had always meant to watch it, but never caught a single episode. Now that I started I can't believe how good it is. And so far it keeps getting better and better.
This is going to put me VERY behind on my movie watching.
Daniel Bishop 05-03-04, 08:08 AM This weekend we watched:
Big Fish
Very uplifting movie
Love Actually
The scene with Hugh Grant dancing throughout the mansion is hilarious.
Daniel
darthopus 05-03-04, 12:14 PM This weekend was Big Fish and Master and Commander.
Big Fish was very good. It had a different feel to it than other Tim Burton movies while still having his unique vision.
This was my second viewing of Master and Commander. It was just as good the second time around.
I also watched a little bit of D4 of the LOTR: Fellowship EE. I know I'm way behind, but it was very informative nonetheless.

The freeway chase will always be a classic. The first Matrix is still the best though, I love the ending of the first.
MyGrain 05-04-04, 04:05 PM Watched "the Cooler". An ok film. William Macy is pretty good at what he does.
Peter Pan.
All in all, a good fantasy flick. Beautiful, rich visuals(I think it was shot by the guy who shot Moulin Rouge). Fine acting. Very enjoyable.
Daniel Bishop 05-06-04, 07:49 AM Visiting my mom in Atlanta this week...sure miss my home Cineplex!
Last night we watched Kill Bill!
Mom's Japanese and she didn't understand the movie...liked the fight scene with Lucy Liu though.
Last Samurai
Very Gooood! Lord Katsuomoto is the man.
Daniel
CptnRandy 05-06-04, 08:02 AM Had to do it over two evenings, but managed to sneak in a movie by myself (a rare treat). So, of course, I watched Reservoir Dogs (http://imdb.com/title/tt0105236/combined).
Randy
Bob McLaughlin 05-06-04, 11:49 AM This week...so far:
Enter the Dragon
Big Fish
Dracula (1931)
Frankenstein (1931)
We saw Rudy (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108002/) for the first time over the weekend - what a great story. It just goes to show it's amazing what you can accomplish if you go after it wholeheartedly.
We also saw Bobby Jones - Stroke of Genius (http://www.bobbyjonesthemovie.com) at the theater on Saturday. Another great story about overcoming obstacles and having character and perseverance and it’s about family. The cinematography is breathtaking and the music is by James Horner (Braveheart, Titanic). What I liked the most was the reflection of a bygone era of moral, upstanding behavior, honor, and sweet romance without the Hollywood sleeze. This movie is not being heavily promoted but I would encourage everyone here to see it. It takes you back to a simpler time and tells the story of a golf legend. Also some of the proceeds are going to a children’s mentoring program called The First Tee (http://www.firsttee.org) which was founded by Bobby Jones.
David_Larkins 05-06-04, 02:10 PM I'm anxious to see the Bobby Jones Movie. One note though - I don't think that The First Tee program was founded by Bobby Jones. It's a relatively young organization that only started in the late 90's.
You are right David - I stand corrected. I should have confirmed what I heard before posting it here. The movie producers founded The Bobby Jones Film Foundation (http://www.jonesfilmfoundation.org/default.aspx) and is working together with The First Tee. "The mission of the Foundation is to advance the philanthropic agenda of Robert Tyre "Bobby" Jones as understood by the producers and primary stakeholders of Bobby Jones Film, LLC. The focus of activities is in the areas of golf, youth, education, health services, international goodwill and character formation. As we work with over 50 charitable organizations in Prescreenings across America, and with our national charity, The First Tee®, we will enable and uplift these organizations as they celebrate the human spirit and make a difference in our world." from www.jonesfilmfoundation.org
racer21 05-06-04, 02:47 PM Master and Commander - agree that the surround sound was great.
Kill Bill Vol 1 - enjoyed it more then I thought I would. Looking forward to seeing Vol 2.
Second Hand Lions - really liked it.
Under the Tuscan Sun.
Great movie. Good story. Well acted.
CptnRandy 05-07-04, 08:06 AM OK, I'll admit it. We watched the finale of Friends, but at least we watched in HD!

It was in HD? I thought I read somewhere else it wasn't going to be. I missed it all together anyway..was busy carrying my neice around her folks property on my shuolders. Ever notice how they get heavier as they grow?
:-}
..Scott{ sore shoulders and all}
I'm going against most here.
1. Kill Bill - HATED it! Didn't like the acting or the plot and I thought it was dumb.
2. Timeline - Fun! Enjoyed it. Although the plot had a lot of holes in it and the acting was pretty poor.
3. Second Hand Lions - Great movie! Original plot and good acting.
4. Bad Boys 2 - Poor acting (especially Martin Lawrence) (the whole Cuban part was ridiculous) and the street language got old real fast. BUT, some of the best action and sound I've seen lately.
5. Under the Tuscan Sun - Good acting, good characters and the plot was definitely DIFFERENT. Overall I just didn't care for it (not sure why).
6. Matchstick Men - Good acting, lots of plot twists. Liked it allot.
CptnRandy 05-08-04, 09:36 AM Last night - Master and Commander - great movie and sure to be a portion of my future demos!

jamiecrane 05-12-04, 09:11 PM Just finished watching "A Life Less Ordinary" with Ewan Mcgregor and Cameron Diaz. Picked it up for $5.50 at Wal-mart last night. Audiois only pro-logic and the pic quality is a little dirty. But this is one of my favorite "love story comedies" Holly Hunter is wonderfully funny. If you haven't seen it give it a try.
Finally saw Master and Commander last night, watched at about 5db below reference and several times went to turn it down, and my Girlfriend each time asked me why. I said it is too loud for you, and she replied No it isn't. She is finally starting to understand!!!

David, was the HT a big selling point to the buyers and did it make a difference in your asking price?

David Guill 05-14-04, 04:14 PM Has it got a suitable space for a new theater? Good luck with the new build (make sure to start a construction thread in the Home Theater Builder Forum). Yes there is a suitable area to put a home theater but it will require extensive work. I will look into starting up a thread in the Home Theater builder Forum.
David, was the HT a big selling point to the buyers and did it make a difference in your asking price? Yes the theater was a big selling point to the buyers but in this inflated price area (Washington D.C.) it is difficult to say that it had an affect on the selling price. I built the price for the theater into the asking price for the house and got it but here in the D.C. suburbs prices seem to go up every month from $25K to $50K.
popbumper 05-14-04, 04:21 PM I'll chime in....
Last night: Chicago (again), wow, just finished up a major calibration of everything and it was outstanding!
Also watched a portion of "We were Soldiers" with a friend.
Wednesday night - Crimson Tide - good background subsonic effects.
Tuesday night - Talented Mr. Ripley - my wife's movie, really NO good surround but I wanted a movie with strong dialogue to check things out.
Monday night - probably a little bit of several things...
Funny, I guess I did not realize that there are lots of other people who also watch a show nearly every night! I have only had my HT setup for about two months now, I purchased the LAST speaker I need yesterday (so I will have a full 7.1 setup) next week sometime.
This is FUN stuff!
Oh, tonite? Hmmm....probably gonna be Jeepers' Creepers, but I haven't decided yet. Gladiators is still in the wrapper.

Watched Timeline last night. Thoroughly enjoyable. Recommended! Even watched the making of features.
Just finished watching my newly-purchased DVD of All That Jazz. I hadn't seen it since I packed up my LD player several years ago.
I enjoyed watching it again, but I had forgotten how depressing the movie was. I remember the first time I saw All That Jazz; the ending hit me in the chest like a sledgehammer. The closing of the body bag; very final and really THE END.
CptnRandy 05-16-04, 09:48 AM My wife and I had a rare Saturday night at home alone - so no "family" movies, which around here typically means a chick flick. We watched "The Last Samurai" which we both enjoyed.
brickie 05-16-04, 12:32 PM Last night, watched Rugrats Go Wild..Not bad at all.Quite an enjoyable family film, and it had some decent surround and lfe use...go figure.

jamiecrane 05-16-04, 06:15 PM Watched "The Last Samurai" last night, great flick. Sound pounded and the picture was breathtaking. Someone earlier compared it to Braveheart, and I willl agree the battle scenes kick some A$$!
Tonight I plan on watching Helter Skelter on CBS, it is in HD and the previews have actually got my interest up there. I am sure I will be disappointed, but it beats another night of Law and Order which I will be able to see this summer during the reruns!
Have a nice sunday

popbumper 05-17-04, 10:57 AM Hey starscomeout:
What is UP with Big Fish? We bought it on recommendation, watched about 35 minutes of it and pulled it from the player. Have not watched the rest since (yet). STRANGE film - can't say it has done anything for us so far....!

emdawgz1 05-17-04, 11:25 AM Sat: Secondhand Lions. Good story, Good Acting, Very nice film
Sun: Hitchcock North by northwest. Classic, good DVD Transfer. Good DVD :)
darthopus 05-18-04, 06:30 PM Not much in the way of viewing. things get hectic for teachers at this time of the year.
Anyway, my wife and I were bad parents on saturday afternoon as we put a movie on in the theater for the kids and then watched Chasing Liberty on the small 65" Mits:D Not one that I would normally choose, but my wife hasn't been able to stay up past nine lately because of her pregnancy and I wanted her to finally get to watch her movie. Of course I also wanted to get it back to Netflix as well!
Sunday I watched "The Cooler". I almost gave up on it, but stuck it out. I was glad I did as it was pretty good. Granted the ending is a bit cliche and hard to believe, but it says something about how you feel about yourself and how your life plays out.
Daniel Bishop 05-20-04, 07:53 AM Last night we watched "Paycheck" with Ben Affleck and Uma Thurman
The effects were good.
The storyline was unique...think what are the 19 items in the envelope for?
The plot was somewhat predictable and yet I enjoyed the movie, can't wait until Saturday morning to see it again.
Daniel
Daniel Bishop 05-21-04, 08:19 AM Last night I tuned up my audio system with AVIA and Radio Shock SPL meter...what an amazing difference! For years I enjoyed movies and never knew I was missing out.
Had to watch "Master & Commander" again.
It felt like a totally different movie! A new dimension was added to the experience for me.
I can't wait to watch all my favorites again.
Daniel
hankey01 05-21-04, 10:11 AM I hate to get off topic, but I have been wondering where to get a decent calibration DVD.
Do you know if home theater places might rent the DVD and a sound meter so I don't have to spend that much money buying them?
Watched Gothika last night and Swordfish, Gothika was really well done for this type of physco movie, the opeing seen in Swordfish rocked the house.
The list goes on, lately I have been into watching 80s classics.
1. The Sure Thing with John Cusack. (Embassy films)
2. Labyrinth with David Bowie (Lucas films)
3. Stand by me (Columbia pictures)
and just so I started to feel like a man again...
4. Full Metal Jacket (Warner Bros)
Daniel Bishop 05-23-04, 01:12 AM My wife wanted to watch Under the Tuscan Sun, the kids wanted Fifth Element...guess who won?
Positano and Diane Lane in a White Dress...Wow!
Need I say more?

Tom Armading 05-23-04, 03:28 PM With all the new movies, what did I watch yet again: The Fifth Element.
Watched "Big Fish" last night. Starts somewhat slowly but picks up 20 - 30 minutes in. Very enjoyable movie with some food for thought.
jamiecrane 05-23-04, 03:54 PM God forbid, I watched TORQUE. Please no bashing. It did give the audio system something to work with, but the movie was just plain horrible. My girlfriend actually picked this one.
Jamie
kevinp8192 05-24-04, 01:35 AM Watched "Love Actually", which can only be described as the "Magnolia" of romantic comedies. Tons of intertwining characters, long, and a little self-pretentious.
But I fell for it anyway, and I'm not exactly sure why. I guess maybe it's because there aren't enough movies like it or "Moulin Rouge" with grand gestures of unabashed romance. I definitely recommend it. It's sappy, but it's not just for saps.
Daniel Bishop 05-24-04, 08:51 AM Yesterday we watched Star Wars - The Phantom Menace
The Pod Race still rocks...and yes Jar Jar sucks
I especially liked the fight scene with the Sith.
Daniel
darthopus 05-24-04, 04:55 PM Saturday I watched "Miracle" w/Kurt Russell. It was interesting to relive this and really connect the event with the political climate of the time. in 1980 I was only 9 and remember this, but never really understood the big deal until now.
Sunday I watched the season finale of Alias. I was expecting this big cliffhanger like the last two seasons and feel a little bit let down. The episode itself was great, but the ending was somewhat anticlimactic.
later,

Daniel Bishop 05-28-04, 09:49 AM Yesterday took the afternoon off from work and got to play in the HT...yippeee!
Got home, no kids, no grandkids, and...no wife
Coca Cola - check
Popcorn - check
Milk Duds - check, check
First up - Runaway Jury
Loved the transfer and with the latest audio tweaking (performed last week) the movie was immensely enjoyable.
School of Rock
I'm normally not a fan of Jack Black but found the interplay between he and kids hysterical. The battle of bands was the best scene in the movie.
Daniel
CptnRandy 05-30-04, 11:10 AM Friday night - full family movie night! We watched "Independence Day" in preparation for going out to see "The Day After Tomorrow".
Saturday Night - the oldest daughter and the wife selected, so we watched "Panic Room". The youngest daughter watched the original "Cheaper By the Dozen" in another room.
Panic Room was the superbit edition, and other than the opening credits, I wasn't that impressed with the picture quality. It's a dark movie anyway, but I'm not sure it benefited much from the superbit treatment.
Randy
kevinp8192 05-31-04, 12:14 AM Saturday Night - "Dog Soldiers". Excellent and very intense werewolf film. PQ was very grainy and often looked like there was a grey film on top of it (disc has P&S, Widescreen, and some extras on one disc). But sound was excellent.
Sunday night - "The Last Samurai". Fantastic, and the first Tom Cruise film I can remember not being constantly aware that it was him on the screen. He really disappears in the role. I'm going to have to see it again, but it's now tied with "Master & Commander" as my second favorite film of last year (ROTK was first).
Daniel Bishop 06-02-04, 10:51 PM Last night the kids watched "Stuck on You" with Matt Damon & Greg Kinnear.
They really liked it...I thought it was just okay. There were some funny scenes, I especially liked the flashback when they were on the school boxing team.
Daniel
brickie 06-02-04, 11:06 PM Memorial Day was the big Return Of The King showing.Enjoyed it.

Just finished watching Master and Commander. I thought it was an excellent movie - great acting and a nice story. Some of my friends told me that it was a slow movie, but I didn't feel that at all. I was a little disappointed that the story ended where it did (if you saw the movie, you'll know what I mean), but I guess that's how war is.
Oh, and the sound was terrific too. The sound effects really gave my sub and surrounds a workout. Especially the cannons.
CptnRandy 06-04-04, 10:24 PM Tonight it was just me and the girls - we watched Chicken Run.
It's been a while since we saw it - proabaly in first run - still think it's very funny. And now I need to go watch The Great Escape!
Randy
Daniel Bishop 06-07-04, 06:39 AM Lord of the Rings Weekend!
Intense movies to say the least. Started Friday night and finished Sunday afternoon...the only way to fly.
Mom kept having to leave the room, the kids thought the Two Towers was the best of the three. I just lay back and was overwhelmed by the stunning cinematography and sound.
Daniel
sigma957 06-07-04, 04:43 PM Lord of the Rings marathon!
I've been wanting to do this for some time, but now that ROTK is available on DVD, we watched all 3 movies (theatrical versions) back to back to back. It took almost 10 hours, but it was great to see the whole thing as one big movie. We will probably do the same with the extended versions when ROTK is available. That should be closer to 12 hours.
brickie 06-07-04, 05:18 PM AWesome thought about doing this again..I did it last year for first 2 movies.
We did watch the Lakers game last night in Hi-Def glory!! Go Pistons!!!!

racer21 06-08-04, 10:30 AM Last night was "The Cooler". I didn't know much about it going in, and really enjoyed it.
Bend it like Beckham. Wow. What a pleasant surprise. I had heard it was good, but still expected a more juvenile film. But it was very well-written/acted/directed. Great story about cultural differences, sports, and pursuing dreams.
I also saw Harry Potter 3. Loved it.
darthopus 06-08-04, 06:25 PM We have been watching quite a bit of TV on DVD lately. My wife wanted to start watching The West Wing and we have gone through 4 episodes. Quite good.
I started watching Smallville and have enjoyed the first 5 episodes a lot.
Another good TV to DVD miniseries is Taken. It was produced by Spielberg and it aired on Sci-Fi as 12 two hour movies. Great story so far about UFOs and the lives of several different people.
I tried watching "Bad Taste" and stopped after about 15 minutes. I just wasn't in the mood for it I guess. I'll try again this weekend.
I need to watch Return of the King, but haven't found the time. Maybe this weekend.

CptnRandy 06-09-04, 08:15 AM Last night I had a theater full for the world premiere of "Westerville South High School Jazz Orchestra Live At Lincoln Center". Not something you'd find at blockbuster!
I spent the last three weeks putting this hour movie from over 10 hours of video shot about my daughter's jazz band (she's the bass player) making a trip to Lincoln Center in NYC to participate in Wynton Marsalis's "Essentially Ellington" competition - one of 15 top jazz bands in the country.
The DVD I made was styled on Ken Burn's "Jazz" and is filled with interviews of the band , the director, and live footage of the event. It also has a "Special Features" section with a slide show, music credits, and their submission CD tracks. The movie, nearly an hour, also has full scene selection.
Hell of a lot of work, but it was a big hit.
Randy
darthopus 06-09-04, 12:08 PM Randy,
Isn't DVD authroring fun? I spent about the first week of my Christmas break intent on putting all of our Cam footage on DVD. What did you use for the authoring? I used Encore.
It took most of the week just to figure out how to get the analog cam footage onto the computer. I didn't like the quality that the capture card driver produced and had to resort to virtualdub.
I ended up just doing our wedding video. It had the wedding and the reception. The extra feature was a picture slideshow of us throughout our dating history accompanied by our song. Did I commit a copyright violation? She loved it despite being irritated that I was on the computer so much.
summer vacation starts next week and I think I'll finish the rest.

CptnRandy 06-09-04, 01:28 PM Don - I'm a mac user, so I used iMovie and iDVD - great tools, but still a huge task!
I have 15 years of VHS videos I dread translating to digital, but it must be done.
As to copyright violations, you are within your fair use to use a song you own on a personal video. You're not distributing or selling.
Thanks,
Randy
Wow Randy, I'm impressed.
By your daughter's jazz band getting into that competition. What a great honor.
As for you: since you're on a mac, you may want to invest in Final Cut Pro and After Effects, if you want to do a lot of editing. Granted they cost a couple of bucks. Here's some stuff we just did at work a few weeks ago with FCP and a box of No. 2 pencils - www.melvinmovies.com
CptnRandy 06-10-04, 09:02 AM Very nice, jimnc!
Yes, the pro tools, including Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro are amazing, but I don't think I can convince the wife to spend the $1,500 for the software, then another 3K or so for upgraded hardware (need a new liquid cooled dual G5). I asked, but she said no. :D
Actually, it's pretty amazing what you can do with the $50 tools - free with a new iMac.
And yes, I'm very proud of her.
Randy
mjmchase 06-10-04, 03:36 PM I just bought a new emac about a month ago and then a digital camcorder. Made my first DVD with some of the footage I shot at the boys Little League games using iMovie and iDVD. I am planning on making a DVD for the girls on the high school cross country team I coach at the end of our fall season, with meet footage, athlete interviews, and camp and summer training footage all set to their favorite music. I am having lots of fun now that I am back using a Mac!
CptnRandy 06-12-04, 07:42 PM Last night my wife, oldest daughter, and I watched The Triplets of Belleville (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286244/)
I really enjoyed it, but I'm sure it's not for everyone.
Ian Fleet 06-12-04, 08:27 PM That latest bug film, Starship Trooper II. It came off to me as an "Alien" remake only where was Sigorney Weaver?
I rented "The Return Of The King" again, can't wait to buy the extended version.
I rented tonight the Phantom Menace. Can't wait to see the Pod race on the big screen.
Bruce Almighty. A nice, feel-good film.
T3. Awesome action. Not too suspenseful, but fun and exciting.
Art Sonneborn 06-12-04, 11:57 PM This afternoon we watched Titan AE. My son had a birthday party with five of his classmates ( six and seven year olds). Angela, my stepdaughter Salina and I were in attendance. This is a great looking and sounding DVD and is a fun hour and a half.
Art
brickie 06-13-04, 10:34 AM Art, I'm sure EVERYTHING is great looking and sounding in that theater of yours!!!!

Watched Lethal Weapon 2 last night (part of the Director's Cut 3-pack we just bought).
Enjoyable movie. Not as good as the first (we all know about Riggs now), but fun to watch the banter between Murtaugh and Riggs. Leo (Joe Pesci) was a riot. The bad guys were despicable. The "house on stilts" goes tumblin' down. Millions of dollars just floats away.
What more could you ask for in an action movie :)
Daniel Bishop 06-13-04, 09:12 PM Last night we watched Mystic River
I thought it was a very "dark" movie, disturbing...
The acting was first rate and the plotl had some interesting twists.
Daniel
Sam1Cohen 06-13-04, 10:39 PM Just finished wathcing Love Actually again. I love that movie plus it was the first movie my now GF and I saw after we were officially dating so it holds a very special place.
Daniel Bishop 06-14-04, 05:52 PM Last night I watched Along Came Polly.
I normally don't like Ben Stiller movies but you can't go wrong with Jennifer Anniston and Hank Azaria. The movie had some classic moments!

brickie,
Normally I wouldn't act like this but so far you're right. So far though, my biggest disappointment has been ROTK which had way too much edge enhancement and had no detail due to this and perhaps low bitrate. On Sunday evening I watched The Fifth Element in HD !  I just sat there with a stupid grin.:D

darthopus 06-15-04, 12:34 PM We watched "Along Came Polly" last night and though it was hilarious as well. Certainly much better then "Scream 3", which was viewed the night before.

Daniel Bishop 06-16-04, 01:37 PM Well last night the kids and I watched "50 First Dates". The kids saw it when it was in the movie theaters.
I thought it was cute and the wife and I are both suckers for a love story.
Daniel
Daniel Bishop 06-22-04, 08:11 AM Saturday we watched Equilibrium in HD (Showtime)
This movie was better the second time around!
I loved the details HD.
Sunday we watched Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines in HD
Again, HD is the only way to go!
Daniel
Redskin 06-22-04, 01:15 PM This weekend my wife and I watched Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions back to back for the first time. From all of the previous reviews and threads, I went in with VERY low expectations. Unlike most people, I was thoroughly entertained for 4 hours. They weren't as good as the original, but who say they had to be to be enjoyable.

brickie 06-22-04, 04:43 PM Fathers Day watched the garbage they call Bad Boys 2. This movie is complete junk!!!!!!!!
brickie
David_Larkins 06-22-04, 04:48 PM Uh, Brickie maybe you forgot to turn the shakers on! Stuff blows up in that movie! :D
brickie 06-22-04, 04:53 PM The shakers were rocking!!!!!!I really expected more considering it had been recommended..All it is is dead people, murder, shooting, guns, and CURSING!!!!!!! Hey, I'm no prude, but damn, where was the plot?????? Liked the first one, so this was a major letdown!!!
I would say the sound and picture were first rate though!!
brickie
kevinp8192 06-23-04, 12:58 AM Brickie, I'm with you on "Bad Boys 2." I (prematurely) thought that I would not see a movie released in 2003 that was worse than "Dreamcatcher." Then I saw Bad Boys 2 around February, and was stunned to find I was wrong. BB2 sucked major. Without the pleasure.
On the other hand, tonight I watched "Pitch Black", the new release of the director's cut, which apparently is the same as the last unrated release. GREAT disc. And yes, it has the DTS track from the previous release (I listened to it--I don't know why all these people in the PB thread were complaining it wasn't there in this new release). It was amazing, maybe even audio demo material with appropriately ample and incredible surround usage. If you're on the fence, and don't have the previous unrated version, I can easily recommend this disc for a great movie and truly an awesome DTS track (I'm sure the DD track delivers as well, I just haven't listened to it yet).
brickie 06-23-04, 10:38 PM Levin. I wil look for this one..

Daniel Bishop 06-27-04, 07:32 PM After slaving away in the garden all weekend...I got a chance to watch PeaceMaker with George Clooney and Nicole Kidman (Wal-Mart $5.50 special).

Daniel
JSK2003 06-27-04, 11:49 PM Watched a few movies the past week :
Gigli (Starz HD) - Anticipated the worst based on bad reviews. Actually found it not so bad. Not one I'd buy to add to my collection though.
Terminator 3 (HBO HD) - Really enjoyed this movie. On my list to add to my collection.
Equilibrium (SHO HD) - Caught me by surprise. Fight scenes were well done IMO. Would watch this again.
Bad Santa (DVD) - Unrated version. I laughed enough to make my chest hurt. Laughing now just thinking about some of the scenes.
50 First Dates (DVD) - Saw this in the theater and had to own it when it came out. One of the few movies my wife and I have enjoyed together.
How to Deal (Starz HD) - Was an OK movie IMO. My wife really enjoyed it. This was more of her kind of movie.

CptnRandy 07-03-04, 02:28 PM Last night it was just the wife and I. We watched "The Others".

Last night -
Independence Day Special Edition (the long version)
It's becoming a 4th of July event here - we now talk back to the actors (remember Rocky Horror?) giggle at the stupidity, and marvel at the effects. We begin at 6 PM, then when it's over we have plenty of time to get in the car and drive to the local fireworks display(which got cancelled due to thunderstorms :( )
CptnRandy 07-05-04, 11:01 AM For our fireworks we choose "Volcano" - a fun disaster movie.

Art Sonneborn 07-05-04, 01:46 PM With a glass of wine and the room to myself I watched the 1932 film 42nd Street. This looks incredible. There is some grain at splices but otherwise wow ! I spoke in another thread about chapter 26 in particular. One of the main characters is featured initially tap dancing with black pants, black shoes a tie and a white short jacket on a giant black lacquer floor. He just looks like he is standing off the screen surface on my new system . This disc is worth buying just for the entertainment value of Chapters 26 and 27. I just sat there with this stupid grin on my face.( even more stupid than usual :D ).
Art
starscomeout 07-05-04, 10:34 PM We spent the day relaxing in the pool and bbqing chicken and ribs in the smoker. We then sat back by the pool and watched fireworks to the south of us from which we had an excellent view of from our back yard. We then finally got around to watching, for the first time, "The Patriot", which was the perfect movie to watch for the 4th of July.

David Guill 07-08-04, 11:47 AM Randy,
I'm not much of a Nicole Kidman fan either. Not that she's a bad actress, she's average, but mostly the hype Hollywood gives her. Did you see where she was "lamenting" how difficult it is to find a date, much less a husband with kids in Hollywood. OH PLEASE.
By the way who will make the 1000 reply in this thread. You're getting close.
Dave
CptnRandy 07-08-04, 01:24 PM Yeah, I really feel for her.
Strangely enough, I have people coming over tonight and it looks like we'll screen "Cold Mountain."
Since you mention it, I'll offer a free copy of "Gigli" to the 1000th poster. In full screen, of course! The person that wins also has to agree to watch it and post an in-depth review here, as well.
Randy
David Guill 07-08-04, 02:04 PM Randy,
Watching Gigli may be classified as cruel and unusual punishment. Come to think of it, isn't that what the Abu Ghraib prisoners were forced to watch :).
Anyway, I heard that Renee Zellweger was superb in Cold Mountain (I haven't seen it yet) and stole the show from Nicole Kidman who got top billing. Which is kind of funny because the last two musicals that came out, Chicago and Moulin Rouge, those two actresses were in them. I must say that I enjoyed Chicago much more than Moulin Rouge. Part of the reason was that Renee Zellweger was superb and Nicole Kidman was alright but nothing tremendous. But, in Cold Mountain they go head to head. However, I am told that Renee Zellweger steals the show from Nicole Kidman. Let us know what you think.
Dave
David_Larkins 07-08-04, 02:27 PM Watched The Butterfly Effect last night. I really enjoyed it. Makes you wonder how your life (and the lives of those around you) might have turned out if you'd just done 1 thing differently.
I found the movie to be pretty suspenseful. It was fun - I'd recommend it. I'm planning on watching the director's cut next.

David,
Wow what a coincidence, I watched it last night for the first time too.
Though it was very deep, dark (psychologically) and disturbing I really liked it. Yes, it makes you think.
In case you haven't heard, the Director's Cut has a dramatically different ending! We watched that version last night and now I want to see the theatrical release.
I love it when I watch a film that I have absolutely no clue about when I push play and then am very pleasently surprised.
Glad you liked it too.
penticton102 07-08-04, 07:08 PM tried cold mountain with nicole kidman and jude law and was not overly impressed, tried the butterfly effect and was pleasantly surprised with it , suspenseful, wall to wall action, and makes you really think, i also thought that "kelso" pulled off the transition from comedy to a serious role pretty good................
kevinp8192 07-09-04, 01:59 AM Watched (finally) the Ron Howard film "The Missing," and gosh but it was a bad movie. A shame, because I was looking forward to it as something that was maybe passed over during the holiday rush, but still a good film that was just missed. WRONG! I'm stunned that Ron Howard directed it. The whole premise is ludicrous, and many scenes are laughable. And even though it starts out promising, it has one of the clumsiest endings in recent memory.
There are some good points: the acting was excellent all around, and it was beautifully shot. The DVD is average for recent releases in PQ, and the sound a little above average with lots of nice gun shots and ambience. The rest is very, very bad. A real disappointment.
CptnRandy 07-09-04, 07:57 AM We enjoyed Cold Mountain last night (invited the boss and his wife - they had a great time). I actually thought the movie worked better than the novel in some respects.
And David, if you can manage the feet of getting your 1000th post to equal the 1000th post of this thread, I'll increase the prize package to include a VHS version of "Ishtar"!
Randy
Markito 07-09-04, 08:35 AM Randy, forget the VHS version, how about giving him the Beta tape version.
CptnRandy 07-09-04, 08:37 AM Can't find the Beta version, but I could do a PAL VHS!
Randy
David Guill 07-09-04, 11:21 AM I do have a PAL Player --- but I think it is broken :(
Maybe I should be happy, Ishtar is the totally boring Warren Beatty movie.
Now that would help me sleep at night.
CptnRandy 07-10-04, 11:09 PM Tonight - Anger Management.
Not a great flick, but a couple of pretty funny things (parked on the highway, singing "I'm So Pretty" and the comments from angry motorists.).
Randy
Ian Fleet 07-11-04, 02:16 AM I found a DVD of Rainbow Bridge. It's a early 70's film with Jimi Hendrix.
I remember listening as a kid to the Rainbow Bridge Album thinking how can he do that?
Most of the film was not very good except Hendrix gave his thoughts in a couple of scenes and he played a concert in Hawaii with Mitch Mitchel and Billy Cox.
It still amazes how he played. There's this voice that blends with the guitar. It's hard to think of it as separate from the other.
starscomeout 07-11-04, 10:22 AM Last night we watched "Starship Troopers" Superbit. The pq was awesome, but the movie it's self sucked, a lot of bad acting.

Art Sonneborn 07-11-04, 10:43 AM Yesterday afternoon I watched The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra. This is a recent spoof of 1950s Horror/sci fi. In the trailer it looked like it would be a riot but unfortunately it is just OK.
http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/thelostskeletonofcadavra/index.html
Last night till way too late I watched the new release of The Great Escape, this is still one of the greatest films ever made IMO. The DVD looks better than the previous nonanamorphic release but not by a great margin. The film still looks like it needs a major restoration.

penticton102 07-11-04, 11:50 AM double header last night , first out of the box" they call me trinity" followed by" my names is nobody" family favorites around here anyway, sometimes you just have to dust off the old favorites and give them another look.................

Daniel Bishop 07-12-04, 06:38 AM Last night we watched Second Hand Lions (Robert Duvall, Michael Caine)
I love those gruff old guys!
The Replacements (Keanu Reeves)

Hunt for Red October (Sean Connery)
You gotta love a movie when a Russian Submarine Captain speaks with a Scottish or is it a ... Welsh Accent?
Daniel
kevinp8192 07-12-04, 01:03 PM Brian De Palma's "Dressed to Kill" on Saturday night. DVD has some interesting extras, including a split screen comparison of the unrated and R-Rated versions, and they even show the cuts for network version.
Angie Dickinson was hot as the naked near-50 year old. And the rug definitely matched the drapes.
starscomeout 07-12-04, 07:00 PM Last night I watched "Hard Target" DTS on laser disc. The movie was nothing great, but it always amazes me just how much better the sound is on laser disc, especially the DTS ones.

I watched the theatrical version over the week end, and the directors cut last night. They are dramatically different. I preferred the directors cut. I had read poor reviews of this film, but I really liked it.
Markito 07-14-04, 04:37 PM I agree, I was kind of disappointed in the Theatrical Cut's ending.

Poor reviews rarely keep me from seeing a movie. Also as far as reading entire reviews, I usually don't do that until I have already seen the film. They just give away too much of the movie in their review. Often it seems more like a summary, then a critique.
Usually I just hear the general "buzz" about the film before I see it.
kevinp8192 07-16-04, 02:12 AM Secret Window. Big thumbs up!
One of the very few Stephen King adaptations that not only is good, but actually FEELS like a SK story. And another great Johnny Depp performance to boot. Somewhat predictable, but it doesn't matter a bit because it's so much fun watching it play out.

Art Sonneborn 07-19-04, 12:39 AM Well I will only add fuel to a great fire here but tonight I watched Road to Perdition in HD in my new theater. The look, the feel all came together in this one. I agree ,Hanks is one of the greatest actors of all time. The face, the delivery, the presence. You know I don't know if this has been said before( I'm sure it has some place) but man all you think of when he performs is that character not Hanks.......this is how it's done.
PS Oh my God did it look awesome !

CptnRandy 07-19-04, 07:52 AM Saturday night I won out over the girls and we watched "Reign of Fire".
David_Larkins 07-19-04, 09:39 AM This weekend I watched Monster - wonderful acting in this one.
Also watched Big Fish. It held my interest, and was enjoyable enough, but I didn't love it.
darthopus 07-19-04, 05:09 PM Last night we watched Badder Santa. I enjoyed it despite it not being what I thought it would be. From all the hype I was expecting it to push a lot of boundaries in the good taste dept. I've seen worse on South Park!
After my wife went to bed I tired to convince myself that I could make it through the special edition of the Great Escape. I started at 9:30 and had to stop at 11:15. Man teaching in the summer sucks.
I used to catch this movie all the time on cable and watched it every single time.
This was my first time with it's OAR. I think I may have seen this more times than Star Wars. I love it that much. Will be finishing it tonight.

I haven't had alot of time to watch movies all summer. I've been busy ladscaping after I made a careless remark after a few drinks. I said "Of course I can build a retaining wall and build a patio and a fence, no sweat!!" Big mistake! It was supposed to take two weeks, tree weeks, tops. Two and a half months later, I'm about 60% done and the end of summer is fast approaching.
I did get to watch "Along came Polly" the other night. I thought it was "ok". I've also been reading more lately. Dan Brown anyone? Which brings me to my question: Are there good movies out there with plot similarities to "The Davinci Code" or "Angels and Demons"?
Gus
David_Larkins 07-21-04, 07:19 AM Don't know of any Gus, but I wish there were... I'd love a good complicated, multi-part mystery, where a number of different puzzles would have to be solved in sequence to get to the final shocker!
Anybody know of any?
CptnRandy 07-21-04, 07:56 AM Gus - try "The Name Of The Rose" - new edition out, too!
Randy
Thanks Captn. I'll look it up. My new replacement lamp just arrived, I think the HT will get some use this week-end after all.

CptnRandy 07-21-04, 01:09 PM We've been watching "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (Amazon link) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000060MVK/qid=1090429676/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl74/002-9114341-7028015?v=glance&s=dvd&n=507846)
Jeremy Brett is by far my favorite Holmes and these are marvelous. I watched these when they were originally broadcast on the 80s on PBS's Mystery!. I can't recommend them enough.
Daniel Bishop 07-22-04, 01:21 PM Based on comments found here...last night we watched Butterfly Effect.
The kid from "That 70's Show" certainly played a different role.
I especially liked anticipating the different changes to everyone's lives with each "episode".
Daniel
CptnRandy 07-22-04, 01:26 PM Last night my daughter and a couple of her friends watched a late night showing of "The Blues Brothers".
Our bedroom is right over the theater, and other than a rather impressive rumble right when we were going to bed, I fell right to sleep. Not entirely soundproof, but not bad!
Randy
Last night I watched The Redsox in HD. Now I have to deal with the hangover because Francona drove me to drink again. Just before that, I caught the last 2 innings of the Cubs game on ESPN-HD. The picture quality on these live sports events with a fresh lamp is outrageous!
Friday night we plan on watching The Last Samurai and Saturday, possibly Return Of The King (for the first time, believe it or not)
Gus
Art Sonneborn 07-22-04, 08:49 PM Gus,
You are wasting time young man, shouldn't you be doing yard work ?;) :D
Art
CptnRandy 07-23-04, 08:14 AM We were talking about Redsox yesterday at the office. We decided they should add this new motto to their jerseys: "Maybe next year." :D
Last night the wife and I watched "The Bourne Identity" and will probably go out and see the sequel this weekend. Identity is a great spy and adventure flick!
Randy
Thats not funny......... But so true.

Didn't Francona drive you to drink last night when he let Schilling face 13 batters over 32 minutes without getting an out? What was he waiting for, October?
And then, I switched to Scotch when he let Foulke pitch to A-Rod in the nineth with first base open.
Thank heaven it wasn't shown in HD here in Mass. Those vivid pictures would be imprinted in my head for ever...or at least until this afternoon when they screw up another game against Steinies goons.
Gus
We watched The Last Samurai last night. We were quite pleased. This is the type of movie that got me interested in HT. Before that we watched The Sox literally kick the Yankees butt and then follow up by figuratively kicking their butt. It was ugly, but a W is a W, at least now The Yanks can't sweep! (God, that's pathetic)
Gus
Hey, guys, I think today is the start of SHARK WEEK!!
Gus
Art Sonneborn 07-25-04, 12:51 PM I watched two of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films and then after Tim Martins post about blacks I watched U571 again in HD. These Holmes films are fun but also interesting in that they are only about 70 minutes long each.
Art
U-571 (and everything else for that matter) must be quite a sight on that system of yours Art!! Twin G-90's!!
This may have been discussed before, while I was knee deep in lumber, but did you get the screen size you were searching for, Art?
Gus
Art Sonneborn 07-25-04, 02:36 PM Gus,
Thanks for asking. It really has turned out to be all that I wanted . My goal was a screen between 11' and 12' wide. The screen is 11' wide and realistically is the largest 16x 9 screen that would fit in my house. Larger would compromise site lines too much ( too tall for the room). Someday, when we have true scope aspect software and PJs I could still go up to about 13' wide but at this point I see no reason. The picture is the best I've ever seen anywhere.

CptnRandy 07-25-04, 04:29 PM Yesterday the wife and I went out to see "The Bourne Supremecy" (entertaining, but not nearly as good as the first), then came home to see "Best In Show" - a real winner (I especially like one of the deleted scenes - the beach ball collection.
Randy
Markito 07-25-04, 05:15 PM Randy,
Last night my wife and I saw "Anchorman" to which we howled with laughter throughout and then we immediately saw "The Bourne Supremecy", which I renamed, "The Bored Supremecy".
I decided to sleep through half of it, as it was far worse than the first "Bourne Identity".
penticton102 07-25-04, 06:19 PM i thought the bourne supremacy was quite good better than the first, wall to wall action, the movie was clipping along at a pretty good pace, don,t understand how boredom could set IMHO.............
dwightrahl 07-25-04, 07:43 PM My family and I watched "Secondhand Lions" last night. I just love a "feel good" movie... and I gotta believe that Robert Duval is one of the best actors ever born.
This afternoon, the kids picked "Lilo and Stitch". Family-friendly fare for sure.
Tonight, my wife and I plan to watch "Matrix - Revolutions". We may follow it up with "Chasing Amy". I'm a big Kevin Smith fan, but my wife doesn't usually want to watch a movie more than once. I guess I have a high tolerance for (and some fascination with) repetition. I figure, if a movie was good once, it's usually good twice (or three times, or more...).
Dwight
valhalla 07-26-04, 08:30 PM Well my wife has a strange knack for picking up obscure movies from Blockbuster. Nine times out of ten they are really horrible but everyonce in a while she picks a good one. Here are two of the good ones that we just watched this past weekend.
"The Dish": Based on a true story, The Dish recounts the emotions, drama and humor behind the four-day Apollo XI mission in July 1969 and the extraordinary role that Australia played in televising the historical lunar landing to the world. I thought this was a really good movie
The Next was "The Human Stain" Starring Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman. It was good, It took a while for it to get going but it all kind of came together in the end. The most notible thing I kept thinking throughout the whole movie was just how good looking the DVD was. The picture quality was exceptional I thought.
Last but not least, I picked this one out. It is a movie that I can directly relate to. "Slammed: Pain is Universal" This movie focus on what injuries and slams todays action sports athletes go through to get to the level that they are at today. This is not for the weak of heart, but if you have ever been involved in the sports of skateboarding, BMX, snowboarding, or surfing you will definetly be able to relate.
Jay
Watched an awesome movie on the weekend. The Snow Walker, starring Barry Pepper. Its based on a book by Farley Mowat called Walk Well my Brother. Its about a pilot in the 1950's, up in the Canadian north. Both me and my wife liked this one. Rent it you will like it :)
CptnRandy 07-29-04, 01:48 PM Last night the wife and I watched "Girl with a Pearl Earring".
Not a great movie, but some terrific visuals. They weren't kidding when they said it was a movie about a painting. Most of the movie was a series of tableaus.
Daniel Bishop 08-01-04, 09:09 AM Last night we watched:
The HellBoy
Dark Scenes...as many others posted the ending was lacking.
Ron Perlman plays many of these types of characters...
I remember my sister being hooked on a Tv show with he and Linda Blair. H was the hero who rode on top of subway cars to get around the city.
Daniel
CptnRandy 08-01-04, 10:11 AM Yesteday my wife and I took advantage of the kids being gone and went out to see "The Manchurian Candidate." (the new one with Denzel).
So naturally, we came home and watche the original!
I was surprised to find that although there are a couple of really good things in the original, we really liked the remake and may be one of those rare finds where the remake is superior to the original.
Randy
brickie 08-01-04, 10:26 AM Last night was family night, so we watched Brother Bear.Typical Disney movie(orphan story), but was enjoyable nonetheless. For an animated movie, not as much eye candy as I thought it may be.Sound was nice though.

starscomeout 08-01-04, 03:05 PM Last night the wife and I finally got around to watching "Once Upon a Time in the West". We had been putting off watching this movie due to the length of it (165 min), just did not have the time to watch a longer running movie.
The pq was as good as what so many others here has said it was, just as if the movie was recently made.
Don
This afternoon we watched The Return Of The King for the first time. We liked it very much. I was surprised that it wasn't the eye candy I had hoped it would be. Some EE and a little soft at times .The movie was great though.

Yes, my sentiments, it was soft and ,although not laden with , had a fair amount of edge enhancement. This would be one that just screams for an HD show.
Art
penticton102 08-01-04, 07:38 PM another vote for "once upon a time in the west" picked up my copy and was pleasently suprised at the quality of the picture for an older movie it sure was shot clean with a great transfer..................

Yeah, it was pretty good, but way too "new-agey" for the young children it was aimed at.
But the best parts were with the two moose. Their voices were done by the "Bob & Doug McKensey" guys. What a wonderful reunion.

We're about to watch Hellboy, just as soon as I'm done grilling us some dinner. I'm tempted to just watch the game, but with Lowe on the moundthe movie sounds like a safer bet.
Gus
CptnRandy 08-06-04, 11:28 PM My older daughter and I watched "The Life of Brian". She was pretty tired and snoozed, but now and then, even with her eyes closed, I could hear her giggle. Sign of a very funny movie.

starscomeout 08-07-04, 12:18 AM Last night I watched "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea". This is a Disney classic with a pretty good transfer. I always enjoy watching the family type Disney movies.
The night before I watched "Training Day", this was an excellent movie and Denzel Washington can always be counted on for doing an excellent performance.
The night before that I watched "The Magnificent Seven". I grew-up during the hey-days of westerns and was surprised that I never did see this one. The transfer was nothing to write home about, but the movie was excellent.
Don
Hellboy was a great movie to eat popcorn to. We both enjoyed it very much. There is another thead praising it for it's lack of curse words. I too, thought that was a refreshing departure.
Gus
penticton102 08-07-04, 03:44 PM exactly you don,t have to be swearing like a jilted streetwalker to make a really entertaining show i just wish that it wasn,t so wide spread in the movies............
Tonight's doublefeature: Big Fish followed by Hidalgo.
The couple that is joining us is bringing their two y.o twins, plus our Ally who is also two, so we don't really expect to enjoy the movies much.

They are showing "Life Of Brian" at The Carolina Theatre here in Greensboro. The Carolina is an old 1920's vaudeville-style theatre. Kinda cool the they are doing this!

thebland 08-08-04, 11:38 AM Mullholland Drive......whoooh...what a trip?
Jeff, was that your first viewing of MD? I watched it twice to make a little sense out of it, but I enjoyed it very much.
Yesterday afternoon I had the house to myself. I watched Big Fish and liked it. Later on, company arrived and we were going to watch Hidalgo, but the children were in rare form so we decided to just watch The Sox. Pedro was his old self lagain ast night. He is great to watch when he's got his game going.
After the game, the wife and our friends still wanted to watch a movie, but they wanted to watch upstairs on the 60" RPTV so the kids could run amock withought giving me a massive coronary. So I suggested we watch Starsky and Hutch instead of Hidalgo. That way the kids could burn the house down and I wouldn't care. It was a good choice. The kids tried to ruin it, but there was nothing to ruin in the first place.:)
I'm going to watch Hidalgo with the wife in about an hour.
Gus
Daniel Bishop 08-08-04, 07:09 PM Last night we watched:
Hidalgo - the desert was a visual feast for the eyes
13 Going on 30...if you can suspend disbelief for a couple of hours, a thoroughly enjoyable movie.
School of Rock- still love the battle of the bands
Notting Hill - ranks right at the top as a feel good love story
Daniel
Well, I got lucky twice in the same week-end. The wife and daughter went out on girl-related errands (the wife was doing her nails) so once again, I had the house all to my self.
I watched Hidalgo. Great movie, except for an excessive amount of EE. Usually, even though I can see it, I'm rarely bothered by Edge Enhancement, but this was ridiculous! The colors were great and the scenery awesome.
Gus
P.s. Big Fish had lots of EE too, what is it with these people?
Gus
CptnRandy 08-08-04, 08:38 PM I also got lucky - the wife decided to take the youngest daughter to see "A Cinderella Story" and I managed to beg off. So I stayed at home and finally watched "Matrix Revolutions".
I dunno. Maybe it was the extra tall vodka martini, but I thought it was pretty good.
R
ckolchak 08-08-04, 08:58 PM Sorry, Wrong Number- a good classic thriller and first time i ever saw it.
and then follwed that up with
Mill Of The Stone Women.
surprised how beautiful the latter movie looked as it was a Euro horror movie from 1960.
the technicolor was gorgeous though, and the disc (transfer and encoding) by a small outfit named Mondo Macabro was first rate.
movie was in the vein of House Of Wax- not bad.
We watched 'Paycheck' this weekend and I was a little disappointed. It just got really ridiculous at times. It was entertaining but one of those DVD's that will now just sit on my shelf.
Gus,
I must agree, Pedro has been lights out the past 2 starts. Back to Back 11K games. Thats what I like to see!!
We watched "Touching The Void" last night. It is a docudrama about two british mountain climbers scailing a dangerous peak in Peru. One of them breaks his leg, the other tries to help him down and I'll stop there as to not give away the rest of the story. Whats great about the movie is that the actual two climbers are used to tell the story (documentary part) but actors are used to recreate the scenes. It really feels as if you are watching everything as a documentary. The PQ is very good. The sound is very good at creating the ambience on the mountain. I highly reccomend it.
Greg
vegashomes 08-11-04, 02:11 AM Really enjoyed Under the Tuscan Sun.
I'm going to head home now and try to catch Kill Bill Vol2 before the Sox game!
Gus
I'm watching the Sox KILL the Devilrays. Ok,ok, so it's only the Drays, but hey, a W is a W. Espcially since Oakland lost and NY is taking care of Texas for us ( So the Yanks are good for something after all!)
Just before I started to watch the game, I watched Kill Bill Vol 2.
1. I liked it.
2. Like the first one better.
3. Can't understand the good reviewes about PQ and SQ. There were some good, sharp scenes mixed in with EE-riddled poor detail scenes, nothing to write home about. Same with SQ, nothing special.
Gus
jamiecrane 08-11-04, 09:49 PM I just finished a "double" helping myself, the Cardinals beating the Marlins and Kill Bill 2.
I really enjoyed 2 better and thought the soundtrack was intense. Nothing earth shattering or ground breaking but a good solid flick.

Hi Gus,
Let me know if "Butterfly Effect" is worth watching or not, sounds good, but that us know!
Don
vegashomes 08-14-04, 11:32 PM Butterfly was one of the weirdest movie I've ever seen. Very unsettling.
Markito 08-15-04, 12:05 AM Very true, but I liked it.
jamiecrane 08-15-04, 08:14 AM Watched Bad Santa and Hell Boy last night. GF wanted to see Hell Boy and to be honest I wasn't all that cracked up about watching, but I was entirely suprised. I was entertained and enjoyed the story line. A very good rental that I may buy.
As far as Bad Santa, I laughed my A$$ off! I know it is crude humor, but it really hit the spot last night for. Of course I would never watch this with my MOM but I will watch this again come XMAS time....
I can see it now, the BAD SANTA/A Christamas Story marathon!
Jamie
Well, yesterday was a bust. We didn't get to watch anything in the HT. We had company over and their children were like wild mustangs, so we decided against watching movies. Instead, I watched the Sox game and let the kids run wild (It wasn't too painful, as long as they don't enter the HT!)
Right now, we have company again, but everybody is upstairs. I snuck down and watched Bad Santa. My wife rented it this morning and they gave her a bad disc. I had to FF through about 1/3 of the movie. Pretty funny adult humor.
Gus
P.S. There is still a small chance we will catch The Butterfly Effect later on if it isn't too late.

Daniel Bishop 08-15-04, 09:23 PM Last night we checked out the Olympics on High Definition - truly something to behold.

Ok, we finally saw The Butterfly Effect. Unfortunately, it came at the expense of The Sox game, but it was worth it. I didn't get to watch the alternate ending. Can someone tell me what the alternate ending was? Please remember to use spoiler tags:)
This was a pretty good illustration of all the fabled problems that are practically guaranteed if you mess with the space-time contuniun if such a thing were possible. Poor picture quality, soft and low-res-looking, great sound (DTS 6.1 Discrete)

Alternate ending Butterfly Effect: Directors Cut
Ashtons character is in the doctors office running from the medical staff. Same scnene as the movie opened up with. All of his writings are gone, but he has gotten his mother to bring in a home movie of when She was pregnant with him. This triggers another episode and you cut to seeing him in the womb. As you watch the baby in the womb he begins to take the umbilical cord and wraps it around his neck strangling himself. He is doing this as he realizes that for everyone in his life to be happy, he has to never be born. It then cuts to his mom with doctors around her, she is screaming as she realizes that she is going to loose another baby.
vegashomes 08-17-04, 01:57 AM I thought that was the regular ending.
Markito 08-17-04, 03:59 AM Nope, that was the "Director's Cut" version.
The "Theatrical" version (a.k.a. regular ending) is different. It is less dramatic and not as good.
Oh, ok. I went with The Director's Cut. So that's the ending I saw. Can you guys tell the regular ending? I won't have time to watch this again soon, besides, it was a rental and I just returned it. And please warn of the spoiler for those who will be watching it. Thanks.

CptnRandy 08-17-04, 08:52 AM Sure - built into the forum. I quote from the Digital Software Discussions and Reviews forum:
If you are going to post a spoiler and especially if it is a big spoiler, you can use the "spoiler tag" to hide your comments in white. For example:
[ spoiler ] Here are the spoilers. [ / spoiler ]
Your comments would then look like this:
Here are the spoilers.
Remember to not have ANY spaces between the "[" "]" symbols or the "/" symbol. Again, inside the brackets "[", there are NO spaces.
valhalla 08-17-04, 09:00 AM Thanks CptnRandy. I got it fixed. That is pretty slick, never seen that before. :)
After the Sox beat the crap out of the Blue Jays, We watched Tears of the Sun. This is one of those movies That I've owned for a year or so and have never watched. I thought it was decent but my girlfriend was a little disturbed by it. It can be a little depressing.
So did anyone see the regular ending? I'm very curious, but not curious enough to run back down to BB.
Red Sox Indeed! Pedro tonight!!
Gus
racer21 08-18-04, 10:40 AM The theatrical version:
The scene with the fortune teller has been deleted, so there is no mention that Ashtons character should not have existed.
When he is in the doctors office and goes back the last time, he jumps back to a birthday party where he first meets Kayley. He tell her he hates her, and something about killing her family if she comes around him again. She runs away crying, so when her parents split up, she doesn't have any reason to stay with her Dad, so she goes off to live with her brother and Mom.
There is then pretty much the same group of clips of the characters "new" lives. It ends with Ashton living in a big city and passing Kayley on a busy sidewalk. She doesn't recognize him, but he does her. She does give him a second glance. So I guess it is somewhat an open ending.
kevinp8192 08-18-04, 11:56 AM Last night I re-watched the original "Terminator", because I plan on watching T2 and T3, both (believe it or not) which I've not yet seen.
I hadn't seen the original in a while, and I was surprised how much it plays like a horror/slasher film. I also had forgotten Paul Winfield was the police chief. It's kind of dated, but still a good, effective thriller. Looking forward to T2 and T3 tonight and maybe tomorrow night.
dwightrahl 08-18-04, 12:21 PM I like the Terminator films - to me, they are the kind of film that you know what to expect, and they deliver...
I watched Matrix: Revolutions last night. I must say I was underwhelmed. Visually, I thought the movie was pretty good, but the storyline left me more than a little cold.
Sorry if I upset any die-hard fans of the Matrix trilogy - I thought the first film was most outstanding, but parts 2 and 3 (to me, anyway) got progressively less good.
Dwight
Thanks Racer21. In that case I'm glad I watched the director's cut. Depends on the mood I guess.:)
