I found it very creepy, my wife left room early on. DaveInBerlinNJ 01-10-05, 11:44 AM "Lost in Translation" 102 minutes of my life that I'll never get back. And I'm a huge Murray fan. The movie does have some interesting moments. At times it is very beautiful, and I really wanted to like it... I just couldn't. My feeling at the end was "so what". Disappointing. skyman00 01-10-05, 11:51 AM Dave- In complete agreement with you about "Translation"(is this going somewhere?). Was bored out of my skull!!! Racer- The japanese always come up with the creepiest/coolest movie concepts, don't they? -j Simon2150 01-10-05, 02:50 PM Manchurian Candidate--A conspiracy theorist type of movie, if you believe in conspiracy theories, this movie is for you. Much like that Mel Gibson/Julia Roberts movie, Conspiracy Theory. Troy--I had low expectations of this movie, but it was actually quite enjoyable. skyman00 01-13-05, 05:16 PM Just watched Henry and June; it came reccomended. Didn't work though... Dan Forsyth 01-13-05, 05:19 PM Bought without a paddle hilarious-recommended jamiecrane 01-13-05, 06:50 PM Gus, Sorry to hear about your situation, I have been there myself and it is always difficult to move on. Best of luck. Jamie Dan Forsyth 01-13-05, 08:24 PM Next week is Friday night lights probably getting that one anyone see it? WannaBinHD 01-14-05, 01:15 AM I saw Open Water nearly two weeks ago and I'm still thinking about it. Though relatively low budget, this movie really creeped me out. I could imagine myself in the same predicament as the two vacationers! So much for the great ocean view... Gus 01-14-05, 08:21 AM Thanks Jamie. On a lighter note: You guys can watch me in HD this Sunday as I cheer Mr. Brady and his boys on as they get rid of Manning and his cronies at Gillette Stadium. Gus Patriots fan eh, Get ready for the eagles Jasman 01-15-05, 06:34 AM One thing for you "New England" sports fans - no more bitching for at least 15 years! The self pity is gone, which, in some respects, will be hard for a few of you to handle. You can just leave that up to us "other" fans in KC, Philly, Seattle... Jasman mjmchase 01-15-05, 09:48 AM Watched "The Station Agent" last night. I enjoyed it, it is a "quiet" movie, one that is driven simply by the dialog and storyline as opposed to any action or huge conflict among characters. I guess it is really just a story about friendship. Worth watching. Workindood 01-15-05, 11:01 AM Well we watched "The Village" the other night and let our 13 year old daughter watch it last night. She would not admit that it scared her at times even though we told her that her parents (we believe we still are her parents even though at times she doesn't want to admit that either....ahhh...Meanagers) were scared at times. We were thinking of watching "The Sixth Sense" tonight. Haven't seen that one in a long time. Yes, I will admit that I didn't get the ending of that one until the very end. It surprised me and I felt stoopid for not "seeing" it. We also watched "Anchorman" also the other day. It was allot better then I expected. Steve Carell is just too funny. He will make a great Maxwell Smart. We sure miss him on the "Daily Show". EDIT: We are nixing "The Sixth Sense" tonight. Instead we are watching the Tsunami victims broadcast on Bravo. It is a fundraiser for the Red Cross International Fund. One of the few charities that we will donate too. They have integrity. vegashomes 01-15-05, 09:50 PM Tried to watch Anchorman, turned it off after 20 minutes. Art Sonneborn 01-15-05, 11:10 PM Originally posted by Gus Thanks Jamie. I'm just in awe how good this looks. The last chapter is just incredible video. Nothing but a CRT can reproduce what this has to offer. This is a 1932 film ! My son thought it was hillarious. brickie 01-16-05, 01:47 AM Last night Harry Potter 2, and a old black and white Charlie Chan movie..Great evening for all involved. Gus, sorry to hear about your bad news. brickie brickie 01-17-05, 04:31 PM Okay sunday night watched the final installment of Harry Potter.I though it was decent, not as good as the 2nd though.Which to me is the best of the 3.I do like the fact the stories are getting darker in nature as Harry grows older. Also one thing I noticed is that the picture quality of the 3rd movie is MUCH better the the first 2. brickie Gus 01-17-05, 04:54 PM Thanks for the well wishes guys. Sorry Art, I was wearing contacts (as part of my new life, I've spiked up my hair and got rid of my glasses) I'm in Deptford, NJ on work and this place is boring as hades! So I'll probably not watch anything tonight. Saturday I watched (about 2 minutes of) Resident Evil II. Had a new friend over and we didn't really concentrate on the movie. ;) Now about Peyton manning, did he ever make it to the game? I didn't see too much of him there!!:D :D :D Bring on The Steelers!!! Gus brickie 01-17-05, 04:59 PM I like him, but he's starting to remind me of Jim Kelly..Sigh.. brickie sleeks 01-17-05, 05:05 PM Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind....not you typical movie, liked it. Manchurian Candidate....Overall I liked this movie, although it was slow in parts. I need to watch the original. Simon2150 01-18-05, 02:36 PM Napolean Dynamite--if there's nothing else to watch, then go for it, otherwise, it was just a movie about nothing, no point or climax for that matter CptnRandy 01-19-05, 10:23 AM I've been on the road, but last Friday night my daughter had friend over for a double feature of "The Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable". Looks like my Friday nights in the theater are over! Randy Morris Jones 01-19-05, 03:11 PM Collateral last night for my birthday. What a view of LA at night! Mojo skyman00 01-19-05, 04:29 PM Last night we watched The Forgotten. Nicely done supernatural thriller. For the most part, kept you guessing right up til the end. Definitely worth a rent. -j brickie 01-19-05, 04:40 PM Skyman, good to see you still around.Had not seen you post in awhile. You still going tiles? brickie skyman00 01-19-05, 04:46 PM Brickie- Yeah, still doing the HWOF tiles. Best wishes to you..my own situation is very similiar, but am keepin my head up . Workindood 01-20-05, 11:27 AM No time lately to watch movies....but we always make time to watch the "Daily Show" right after the 6:30pm news. It put things in perspective. EDIT: How could I forget...we watched Richard Jeni on HBO last sat night. Anyone else? He is my Hero...especially about driving with your wife. All I had to do was LOOK at my wife and watch her shrink into her seat. :D rdwalt 01-20-05, 02:33 PM Watched The Iron Giant last night... again. This time watched it with the 'Behind the Armor' bonus feature where you hit enter when you see the Giant's nuts. It was quite enlightening. skyman00 01-20-05, 03:38 PM That doesn't sound right... brickie 01-20-05, 03:42 PM Does kind of have a funny ring to it.. brickie Dan Forsyth 01-20-05, 07:26 PM That does sound very very weird racer21 01-21-05, 01:55 PM Caught a few over the last week: Collateral - I liked it a lot. Really enjoyed the interaction between Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise. The Village - I saw this in theater, so this was my second time. The more I think about this movie, the more I like it. The Forgotten - I felt it was average. More along the lines of a TV movie. I watched the theatrical version. Has anyone here seen both the directors cut and theatrical version(s)?? I may check out the DC. Toxarch 01-21-05, 05:34 PM Originally posted by rdwalt Watched The Iron Giant last night... again. Gus skyman00 01-22-05, 01:51 AM Speaking of animated films, just finished Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke (my wife just asked to watch it again for the 1st time after seeing it in the public theater over 5 yrs ago...!). YESSSS! Mononoke is simply wonderful! My second favorite all-time anime film (the first being "Kaze no Tane no Nausicaa"). Watch either if you get the opportunity(if anime is your thing, that is)-j vegashomes 01-22-05, 02:27 AM Just watched the Forgotten and greatly enjoyed it. CptnRandy 01-22-05, 09:12 AM Originally posted by skyman00 Speaking of animated films, just finished Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke (my wife just asked to watch it again for the 1st time after seeing it in the public theater over 5 yrs ago...!). YESSSS! Mononoke is simply wonderful! My second favorite all-time anime film (the first being "Kaze no Tane no Nausicaa"). Watch either if you get the opportunity(if anime is your thing, that is)-j We love Miyazaki as well. Even "Kiki's Delivery Service" which has all the appearance of being for very young girls, has something magical and touching about it. Last night my 16 year old daughter had her weekly movie night. Things are getting out of hand - I counted 16 pairs of shoes, not including her, and there was some coming and going so it was hard to get an accurate count. They watched "Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle", then "The Usual Suspects". Randy Gus 01-22-05, 10:12 AM Last night I had my son Gabriel over for a movie night. We watched Star Wars followed by Empire Strikes Back. He is still going as I write this, he is now watching Return Of The Jedi. His b-day is May 23 and all he's asking for is to go see the new Star Wars movie. At 8 years old, he's the biggest Star Wars fan I know! And then there was the REAL bad news: My one-month-old plasma already has terrible burn-in!!! It looks like I thought I turned it off the other day, but it was still on (with no signal coming in). The screen was black, so I thought it was off, and I went to work. Now when the screen goes black, I can clearly read "Comonent1" on the top right corner!!:( :( :( Gus skyman00 01-22-05, 10:38 AM Gus- Man, when it rains , it pours! Sorry to hear. I hope things start lookin' up for you. Randy- I'm a little bummed as I can't find my copy of "Castle in the Sky"(another Miyazaki beauty). -j CptnRandy 01-22-05, 10:50 AM Got that one at the local Media Play late last year - got luck and found it on sale (rarely under $25). My younger daughter is nuts about these films. Randy skyman00 01-22-05, 11:05 AM Cool; just found my copy of CITS. I gotta stop looking through my dvd collection when it's late at night and I've had a few.... -j Workindood 01-22-05, 10:18 PM We are starting to watch the whole 5 year series of Babylon 5. We just finished "Midnight at the Firing Line" and now we are watching "Soul Hunter". I have forgotten much of the little arcs that JMS wrote. This is fine with me. I made sure we never over watched this series knowing it would be on DVD at some point. I had taped the whole thing once, but that was mainly for others to view. This is the best Sci-Fi show ever put on television in my humble opinion. The fact that they developed most of their CGI from a network of PC based computers is just plain cool. In fact it made the Star Trek franchise take notice and beef up their CGI. CptnRandy 01-22-05, 11:17 PM Actually went out to a movie - saw "Sideways". Very funny - great movie and highly recommended (not for kids, nudity and adult situations, but damn funny). Randy brickie 01-23-05, 02:08 AM Tonite watched Godzilla Tokyo SOS..Garbage!! This is one they could have kept.Even my son was not thrilled about it.Afterwards watched another Charlie Chan flick..Me and the wife love em.. brickie mjmchase 01-23-05, 10:30 PM Watched The Great Escape last night with my 3 sons, this was one of my favorite movies growing up. Pretty funny when my 10 year old said "they copied this from Chicken Run" After straightening him out they really enjoyed the movie. They like war movies with lots of action and bloodshed but I think they really got this movie. After it was over my 10 year old said he thought it was really good but also kind of sad. I guess a great movie is always a great movie, no matter how old... skyman00 01-24-05, 01:28 AM nice... -j rdwalt 01-24-05, 09:52 AM Good Gravy! Nuts and Bolts - not THOSE nuts! Simon2150 01-24-05, 03:23 PM I had the WORST movie weekend ever: The Village: I didn't care for this one @ all! The whole surprise ending is getting old, having said that, Why did I rent this one? Anchorman: If there's anyone you ever hate coming over to watch a movie, pop this flick in the dvd player. It's guaranteed to make you DUMBER by watching it! The previews of this movie @ least looked funny, but it wasn't. Workindood 01-24-05, 05:40 PM We are still watching more of "Babylon 5" 1st season. I am amazed how much I forgot of this season. Commander Sinclair doesn't seem as wooden to me this time around. This season really sets up the rest of the series quite well. I have noticed that wide-screen stretchiness in some of the CGI shots. But figuring this is a TV show and it is over 10 years old I am glad it is still in wide-screen. The surrounds are not that dynamic at this point. I am curious to hear the later seasons...To hear if they have better sound. But all in all...it is a decent transfer like I said it is over 10 years old and a TV show. How many other TV shows that old are in wide-screen of any kind? Or even attempted surround sound? Morris Jones 01-24-05, 07:02 PM We had my wife's sister visiting on Sunday, and without time for a full movie, I put Winged Migration on for just a taste. It's the sort of movie that a taste just makes you want more. They had to leave, but they took the disk with them. This one was even a replacement for the one that my wife's parents wanted to keep. :) Meanwhile we've caught up on 24, and we're three episodes away from finishing season 2 of Alias. Season 4 will be waiting patiently on the TiVo. And of course there was football ... Mojo Gus 01-24-05, 08:27 PM Ysterday I was snowed in. My car was burried to the windows. I called my brother to come pick me up in his big Ford Expedition. About 15 of us got together at his place to watch The Patriots continue their march toward The Super Bowl. Oh and what a great time it was! We did a tequila shot with every interception Benny threw and every nifty pass Tommy threw. Needless to say we were all drunk as skunks by the time the game came to it's inevitable conclusion! Right now I'm debating whether to have a Superbowl party my self. My place is deffinitely too small for large gatherings, but I'm so used to hosting! Gus APorter 01-26-05, 02:07 PM Watched Friday Night Lights. Okay movie but doesn't come close to Remember the Titans. Tnilsson 01-26-05, 08:16 PM Watched "Master and Commander" again, but this time after I had finally hooked up my optical audio connection. I was amazed at the difference: it sounded like canonballs were crashing through our HT. I am surprised the kids did not wake up at the other end of the house. Before that we watched "A Knight's Tale" that a friend brought over. I thought it would be really stupid, but it was a rousing and very fun movie. Who would have guessed? Toxarch 01-27-05, 03:46 AM Last night, we watched Friday Night Lights. It's pretty much how Texas highschool football is, only more parties and the good coaches get a lot under the table. Our highschool football coach (when I was there) made over $60K per year, got a free car, free house, free insurance, and plenty more. And he hardly won very many games. After a couple of years, he was pretty much run out of town and went to a rival school. Anyone noticed that they changed Boobie's football number? I noticed it while watching the DVD extras. I was wondering why. Maybe Permian retired the number and did not want them to use it or something. His number was #35 and in the movie it was #45. I think all the other players had their correct numbers. I think Remember the Titans was still better, but this is also a really good flick. Tonight, we watched Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Good retro comic book style movie with a fast pace after the beginning. Much better than I thought it would be from the previews. Lots of bass in this movie. The shakers and sub were moving quite a bit. Definitely an LFE workout for any theater. Workindood 01-27-05, 04:56 PM Well I am off to watch more of Babylon 5. We are on to season 2. Anyone interested in the details of this fine TV production you can go to this site. http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/lurker.html It is the Lurker's guide to Babylon 5. Quite interesting. Morris Jones 01-27-05, 06:43 PM Welcome to the station, Workindood. It just keeps getting better. <*> We had a guest over last night and watched 13 Going On 30 for a little light entertainment. Mojo starscomeout 01-27-05, 08:12 PM We watched "The Village" and "The Forgotten". Both movies were nothing great, but enjoyable. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon14.gif http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon14.gif Don starscomeout 01-27-05, 08:31 PM Since I finally got around to installing MyHD card, we have been watching a lot of programs in HD. These are programs that I would have normally never considered, but now with HD I have found a lot of good TV programs to watch, such as: "CSI: Miami" "CSI: NY "Medium" "Without a Trace" "Numbers" "Medical Investigation" "Lost" However I still don't like the movies that have been broadcasted ota in HD. The sq of these broadcast seem so dead that the DVD versions I own always wins hands down! Don Workindood 01-28-05, 07:24 AM Thanks Mojo, I have been a fan since 1994. I taped every episode...on the highest quality too. Was waiting for the day it came out on DVD. I can now freeze a frame an actually read the info on it were as before with tape it would jump around. And there is allot of funny stuff hidden in newspapers, computer consoles, etc. This is one of the best TV shows ever written. I have gotten more people hooked on this show that normally do not like Sci-Fi at all. Because it is more than a Sci-Fi show, it is not just a Sci-Fi show it is so much more. Also to have the Lurker's Guide to go to is a wonderful resource. To have the writer/creator put in his input in that guide is just plain cool. I just say to people that haven't seen this show or have just seen parts of it....to rent it and watch the first season, you will be surprised how fast you get into it and will be looking for more. starscomeout 01-30-05, 12:41 AM Wife and I watched "Open Water" last night. We gave this http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon14.gif http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon14.gif, however this is not a rewatch type of movie. I think for a low budget movie they made an excellent flix and its makes for a movie well worth seeing once. Don CptnRandy 01-30-05, 02:00 AM Last night, watched "Orange County" - cute, with a few laughts. Tonight, the theater became the "losers' lounge". Had a poker game and the losers made a beeline for the theater after dropping out. They watched "Master and Commander". While we finished the first game and started a second. Randy pgervais 01-30-05, 03:13 AM Last Night, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, not bad. DVD looked real good. Tonite, Alien director's cut, damn that dvd looks great for a 25 year old film! starscomeout 01-30-05, 04:33 AM My wife and I just finished watching "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow". We usually agree rather we like a movie or dislike it and both feel the same about this one. I did not care for the story line of this movie and did not care much for the sepia-tone like look they gave it. Sorry, but we are giving it http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon13.gif http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon13.gif. I think at another time and in a different mood, and then I may have given it a marginal thumb’s up. I think this is one of those movies that may have been better at the theater (on a much bigger screen) then in the HT. I am glad now I only rent movies through Netflix rather then buying them. I have ended up purchasing far to many disappointments in the past and this movie would have been one of them. Don longshot21771 01-30-05, 09:29 AM Saturday night - Napoleon Dynamite (4/5 funny movie) Friday Night Lights (2/5 too much camera movin around) Without a paddle (3/5 worth rental kinda funny) Art Sonneborn 01-30-05, 09:55 AM Thursday night we Watched Sky Captain. This is a well done film in the tradition of the serials of the 1930s and 1940s. This was a great experience if you are a fan of the period in anyway. The surround effects ,as well as the LFE, were at or near the top of anything I've experienced. Art Workindood 01-30-05, 10:26 AM Well we watched more of season 2 of Babylon 5. We watched one episode where Capt. Sheridan was being taught by the Vorlon Kosh. He showed Sheridan a "Moment of Perfect Beauty". It was a very touching scene. I also have a question about Dolby 2.0. What is it exactly? Is it 4.1? Is it where the rears are the same channel? Babylon 5 is in Dolby 2.0. There is NO thump of any kind coming out of the sub. It is weak. Also what should I set my Amp to? Dolby I or Dolby II? MileHighJC 01-30-05, 02:28 PM Last night : Open Water. A very disturbing movie, not your typical hollywood fare. Clearly low budget, but farily well put together. The core premise is interesting, and the shark stuff puts an edge on it, even if its a bit overblown. For anyone who has ever had a marital argument, its just a little uncomfortable (ok, so thats anyone thats married...). Not a flick I want to see again, but not a bad use of an evening. jc Dan Forsyth 01-30-05, 02:59 PM Watched the grudge weird movie pretty scary wasn't that good though:) longshot21771 01-31-05, 10:19 PM Sunday night Aliens vs Predator I liked it thought was pretty good maybe not worth going to the movies to see ( especially at Carmike Cinemas ) the sound was awesome!!! really gave the sub and 6.1 surround a good workout. I would like to thank Carmike Cinemas for having such a poor theater to make me want to build my own, so I wouldnt have to go there too watch movies anymore!!! Good movie. Simon2150 02-01-05, 03:12 PM The Forgotten--was an okay movie, kinda weird. Wouldn't watch it again. What were those "people?" Open Water--low budget movie. The punisher was alot better than I thought it would be, great action movie. starscomeout 02-02-05, 04:17 AM Tonight we watched "The Grudge" http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon14.gif http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/images/icons/icon14.gif. The older I get the less I find movies scary, and the last time I remember being scared was when seeing "The Exorcist" during it's original release. However there were a couple times in the Grudge that made me jump pretty good and kept my wife uneasy during the whole movie. I know my wife would give it thumbs up and I am also going to give it thumbs up simply for the reason it caught me off guard and gave me a couple good jolts from my seat! I have to agree with longshot, "Van Helsing" was about as bad as they come. I watched the whole thing, but it was all I could do to hold out to the end before turning off the projector. Don CptnRandy 02-02-05, 10:07 PM Since we're hooked on Lost, I got my wife Season One of Alias. We watched the pilot episode tonight. Great stuff! Randy Markito 02-03-05, 01:49 AM The pilot of Alias is magical! Saeson one is SOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOD! I wish I could see it for the first time all over again. Enjoy Randy! Toxarch 02-03-05, 03:50 AM We watch Lost and Alias every week. The first season of Alias was the best. They kinda dropped off later. I like how they are trying to get back to what they had the first season. This season seems more like the first season. Watched The Village tonight. Good movie. I had already seen it in the theater. Can M. Night Shyamalan really surprise an audience anymore? He writes some good movies with interesting twists, but everyone expects it now when they watch his movies. He could write and direct a great movie without any twists, but people might think it's horrible cause they keep waiting for the twist and it never comes. Maybe he should direct his next twist movie under an alias. I saw Alien vs. Predator in the theater and I bought it yesterday. I was going to watch it, but then I thought that I may return it before I open it. The movie wasn't as good as Alien or Predator. I remember not liking the movie that much, it did have some good action, but a bad ending. I think I may return it and buy it when it's cheaper just to go along with the other movies in the set. Markito 02-03-05, 10:03 AM Originally posted by Toxarch I like how they (Alias) are trying to get back to what they had the first season. This season seems more like the first season. I totally agree! I thought that too. I'm glad that they are doing that. I think "24" is doing the same thing. Season one of 24 was fantastic and then each following season got worse. This year it seems much better and has the same good writing as the first year. Art Sonneborn 02-03-05, 10:35 AM I love Bogart films also, I think The Big Sleep is my favorite. All the Babylon 5 episodes we have been watching just don't use the sub like a newer movie. And my Gawd....wow. The house is rockin'. CptnRandy 02-07-05, 08:02 AM Unfortunately, the evil *#%!@ at Sinclair Broadcasting (who own the local Fox AND ABC stations) won't allow the HD signal to be carried on local cable or satellite. So while we really enjoyed watching the Superbowl last year in HD (on CBS), this year was a major disappointment for the entire Columbus market - and everywhere else Sinclair rules. Randy Art Sonneborn 02-07-05, 01:00 PM Last night, after the Superbowl I watched The Matrix Revolutions in HD recorded from HBO HD by myself. Loved the Paul McCartney halftime - I was getting sick of those cheesy choreographically laden productions they have had in the past (and this is coming from the mouth of a choreographer!). Randy, I feel for you and Sinclair - They own our ABC affiliate, and it stinks. jamiecrane 02-07-05, 09:29 PM Randy, So you are unable to recieve FOX OTA? I was just wondering since I read an article about this very thing saying that a very large portion (30%) would not be able to view. They (Sinclair) do transmit HD OTA but they just do not let it on calbe, is this correct? Jamie CptnRandy 02-07-05, 09:39 PM Yes - that is correct. I refuse to purchase an HD tuner and an antenna just to watch those stations - all of the other local broadcasters, NBC, CBS, PBS, and UPN all provide their HD signals via cable. I did discuss it with my AV guy and he said the signal would be dicey - no guarantees even with the equipment. In my opinion, Sinclair is unreasonable in their demand to be paid for something that they provide free over the air - they certainly don't have any support from the rest of the broadcast community - or other Fox or ABC affiliates around the country. Star Wars, ESB - Awesome to finally be able to watch this Incredibles *cough* - Excellent movie with excellent sound and video, and will be buying this in March SAW - REALLY good surround sound, not a bad movie (IMHO) maybe a better ending, but I guess it leaves it open for SAW II ( Harry Potter 3 - Fun film that my wife got me into. Yesterday: Grease - an "OK" DVD - had too much of an echo in 5.1 mode - this was the first time my 10 year old daughter saw it though, so I sat through it again (boy, did ONJ look good back then!)... Workindood 02-16-05, 06:21 PM Just finished season 4 of Babylon 5. Wow was that ever good. Now we have season 5 to watch. Not my favorite of the series. BUT it does have the lovely Tracy Scoggins in the cast. She is Drop Dead Gorgeous in my opinion. But not who I would have cast for that role. Season 5 was under the gun in my opinion as well. Since the series was waiting to be picked up for season 5. Claudia Christian (Commander Susan Ivanova) quit the series unexpectedly at the last minute. I feel if JMS had been told earlier that the series would continue then he could have done a better job on the last season. Recently : Memphis Belle : Still like this movie - havnt seen it in a long time, and the first time I saw it BIG. The Village : Interesting flick, not nearly as good as Sixth Sense, but in the same Genre. The "Aha!" at the end was not nearly as cool as in Sixth Sense. Ray : I thought this was an awesome movie... I watched it with high expectations, and it delivered (rare). Foxx really brought home the goods with this perforamance, and Im betting he will bring home hardware soon. Watched the theatrical version, will watch again soon with the extended version. With the kids : Shark Tale - funny movie, fairly clever linkages to pop culture. Not as good as some of the recent computer animation flicks such as.... Monsters Inc. : I forgot how much I enjoyed this the first time. Kids of course still love it too. I noted the other day that since Christmas break, largely due to travel and other activities, I hadn't watched a movie up to this last weekend. But my wife and I typically watch 1 hour (closer to 40 minutes without commercials) of recorded HD programming almost every night - sometimes we can squeeze in two. So right now, even best case, I watch 1 or 2 movies per week (rarely 2 - so 2-4 hours per week), but we watch 5-7 hours or TV. Is that typical for your viewing? In the spirit of this thread, here's what we watch. We usually run a backlog of 1-2 weeks on most shows. The backlog carries us through reruns. "Jack Flack to Lady Ace, come in Lady Ace, this is Jack Flack" MileHighJC 02-21-05, 06:20 PM Over the weekend... Reservoir Dogs - saw this a long time ago, its a bit more startling on the big screen, this is gratuitous violence at its extreme. The "ear" bit was a bit much even for me... Daytona 500 - As I commented before, my theater was hijacked for this by friends. While Im not much of a NASCAR fan, have to admit that I enjoyed it, especially the last 30 mins. To CptnRandy's question, Ive been very surprised how much I wind up using the theater for HD material. With NCAA basketball revving up, the Super Bowl, Daytona, etc etc, its got a lot of use for that. I also watch a fair amount of Discovery, but not much primetime TV. Mr. 3000 - kinda disappointing, had read some good things on this one. In the end, this movie had a LOT of potential, but didnt bring it all home. Still entertaining, just wasnt all that it could be. Bonus feature talked about how they originally were going to cast Denzel Washington. Interesting. jc Dan Forsyth 02-21-05, 09:24 PM Just watched shark tale great movie and excellent animation:) starscomeout 02-21-05, 10:13 PM Come Sunday ABC will be broadcasting the Academy Awards in HD. The UK versions. I am drawing my wife into this series as well. I never cared much for the original. This one is well written and the effects are pretty good along with the sound track. How you get to watch the UK version? and is it any diffrent? Also I am little confused missed some of the beggining and don't remember the old ones too well now ( I am 34 so I was young when it aired ) Why is there 2 of the same people and do they fell each other's emotions and such? I take it one is a cylon and one somehow takes over their being. Workindood 02-24-05, 10:05 PM As far as I can tell. They are Cylons...period. Either they are cloned humans...or machines....I do not know as of yet. The UK versions have been out way ahead of the US ones. Figure it out. Toxarch 02-25-05, 02:36 AM I downloaded the torrent files for the UK version. It's the same thing as the US version, only they ran the first season last year. Some Cylons look like humans. They bleed, sweat, eat, feel pain and all that stuff, but they are Cylons. There are currently 4 human models that they have shown. The one that is the hot Korean chick thinks she is human and fears she might be a cylon on the Galactica ship. And the blond that keeps appearing and disappearing around Baltar is also a cylon, but she planted some chip in Baltar's head so only he can see her in a kind-of daydream. Some of the characters have changed. Boomer was a black guy and is now a Korean girl. Colonel Ty was a black guy and now is a bald white guy. And Starbuck is now a blond girl. This new version is pretty cool and is a lot darker than the original version. But I think they use the shakey camera effect a little too much. PamW 02-25-05, 08:05 AM Wednesday night - Mulan. Forgot what a cool movie that was. Plus we watched it for the first time in surround sound. A dedicated theater beats the heck out of stereo speakers and a 32" TV any day! Art Sonneborn 02-25-05, 08:05 AM Last night I watched a few of the Fleischer Superman shorts. I was interested in revisiting these for their influence on Sky Captain. Art kevinp8192 02-26-05, 01:24 AM Chick Flick alert! We watched "The English Patient." I remember seeing it when it came out, and being quite bored--and the movie seems to take a beating every time something is posted about it. But seeing it again tonight was completely different--we both thought it was spectacular. Moving story and script, beautifully shot and scored, and well-acted. Didn't seem too long at all, and I'm glad I gave it another chance. The DTS audio on the newest 2-disc edition was outstanding, but there are some problems in video, noticeable even on my small 42" plasma. Edge halos and compression artifacts could be seen. Another Miramax letdown. Otherwise, if you like this type of movie but didn't like THIS particular one, you should give it another chance. Workindood 02-26-05, 09:36 AM When that first came out in Theaters we went to see it. IT was being shown at The Odian . It was a little theater in Lansing,Mi. that was struggling to survive. It only showed obscure, art, indie type movies. AND you could NOT take your drink to your seat. Something I found out AFTER I bought one. The seats in the theater were the most uncomfortable seats I have ever sat in. My buttocks was numb after sitting though "The English Patient". So I never appreciated this film until we got it on DVD and could sit in our own seating at home. CptnRandy 02-26-05, 12:30 PM Last night had another poker game with a total of 8 adults. Randy Workindood 02-26-05, 12:32 PM Randy, That sounds like fun. Except I would be in the "losers lounge" all to often. CptnRandy 02-26-05, 12:41 PM You're not that far away, dood. Come join us some evening! Perhaps we should have a "Home Theater get-together and poker tournament" sometime soon. Randy Workindood 02-26-05, 07:26 PM Well thank you Randy. But I like to now and again play as long as I don't have to bring my "Deed" to my house. :D My Father was a great poker player and he used to laugh at my card playing. I am curious to see and hear "Deadwood" this coming week. I watched it last year in HD/5.1 and I do not remember it sounding as full as "Carnivale". Maybe it is my new sub. I warned them before hand that it was an old movie but they wanted to use the theater. About twenty minutes in my five year old asked me " dad do you ever wish you could go back in time?" I said, "yes that is why we are here watching this movie, we watch and pretend we are going back to that time". This was interesting, since Turner is my most physical child but the least cerebral in that he rarely considers things like that. His older brother would ask questions like that when he was three. This a pretty good film and starred James Cagney and Pat O'Brien. It was one of the films in the gangsters box set I bought. Bogart was also in it but it was prior to his taking off. It's interesting since really he didn't get big parts until he was nearly too old to play them anymore. The rest is history and obviously audiences didn't think that at the time. Not surprising at all... The high ticket and food prices at the theater (and having a decent HTS) has made it so we really have to ask our self if a movie is "theater worthy" before taking the whole family to see it. Movies have to be on the level of LOTR, Star Wars, and Harry Potter to be theater worthy for us. Its far easier to pay a $3 rental than $50+ theater night for the family to see something like the Spongebob Movie. Art Sonneborn 03-06-05, 05:42 PM Plus one only has to go to the theater to see who goes there. I think we have come to a point where many many adults just wait for the DVD. Art Gus 03-06-05, 07:48 PM Hey guys! I haven't watched any movies lately (burgeoning single-man social life) But I did see something very interesting last Tuesday. I was staring at this little red light, and a few minutes later, I could see perfectly without glasses!! Hurray for Lasik surgery! I've been staring at this computer screen for most of the day (work) and I can't believe my eyes aren't dry or sore! I keep reaching for my glasses only to find they aren't there!! Sometime during the week I plan to bring my son in to see Shark Tale on my plasma. Gus rday1960 03-06-05, 08:52 PM iv been considering that lasex surgery myself Gus. a friend had cloudy vision for a few days after having it done i used to live a minute walk from the lawrence cinema.moved a few months ago to a new home. with the cinema in the house i dont miss going to the theater . last night was asome. i watched spiderman 2 superbit . the tranfer was excellent. then i watched most of the extra stuff from the star wars trilogy follwed by the extra material from the remastered planet of the apes. at 2 in the am i popped in the movie just wanting to watch 5 mins. ofcourse i got half way into the picture before i shut things down and got to bed. this is one of my all time favorites and it really has to be seen on a big screen to truly enjoy it. the dialogue made it feel not dated at all and i think the costumes stand up as well, much better than the remake in my opinion. highly rcommended Art Sonneborn 03-07-05, 12:25 AM Tonight I watched The Roaring Twenties. This is another in the Warner's Gangsters box set. An entertaining film. Acting by Cagney much better than his Angels With Dirty Faces work. Again tough to see Bogart second fiddle( not even top billing ). The video on this was essentially flawless, just an awesome transfer for any film let alone one almost seven decades old. Art rday1960 03-07-05, 09:42 AM art, i have a box set with yankee doodle dandy, treasure of the siera madre, and robin hood along with a bonus dvd. i think you would like that one if your a fan of classics. the robin hood with errol flyn is wonderful. loved it as a kid but first time i have been able to view it on a big screen. what a whole new perspective Cyklopz 03-07-05, 10:02 AM Howdy Folks, I started reading this thread and compiled quite a list of DVDs to consider buying. Just starting to build up a HT in our new house. Nothing high end but the little pb6100 projector is doing a fine job so far. I bought it for my wife for Valentine's day. I borrowed our NEC from work and got her hooked. :-) Anywho, I have not watched anything not listed here recently but I did re-watch Sky Captain and enjoyed it on our little big screen. I"ve been going back through our small DVD collection (about 60 or so) to see them through the projector. Really makes a difference even if you have seen a film many times. Keep up this great thread, and hopefully I will be able to contribute now and then. Cy Art Sonneborn 03-07-05, 10:06 AM rday1960, Thanks. Art Workindood 03-07-05, 11:33 AM Art, You will love Yankee Doodle Dandy. I first saw that years and years ago. I never knew that Cagney was a "Song & Dance Man". He was a damn good dancer. Tnilsson 03-10-05, 12:12 PM I can't recommend "Yankee Doodle Dandy" enough. It blew me away when I saw it for the first time. Cagney is amazing in it and the DVD is very nice. Speaking of great classics, my wife and I just watched the special edition of "Sunset Boulevard" which we have owned for some time but never got around to watching. What an amazingly fresh movie even after all these years. The last movie that surprised us so much with how fresh it was was the refurbished silent "Metropolis" which I also can't recommend highly enough. It is worth checking out even if you generally don't like silent movies. Dan Forsyth 03-10-05, 09:29 PM Rdwalt:Yeah the spongebob movie was funnier then the show I liked it a lot. peter*grimes 03-11-05, 04:53 AM Watched the new Bambi last night. Pretty darn good restore job. The background art is flat out staggering. I saw this as a re-release when I was a kid and still enjoy it today. Really quite a fun experience. However I felt the documentary was awful. I really wish they would have spent more time with the people who actually worked on the film. They were there but only in short clips. Hearing more from the creators would have made a far more interesting affair. They spent way too much time letting the people who currently work for Disney flap on. In my opinion at least 2 of them looked like complete boobs! In fact the SF on this release is more fluff than content. Typical Disney though. I got a hunch I will never visit disk 2 again. I think Snow White had the best features for a Disney Cartoon release. Although I haven't seen the Alice in wonderland release. Cyklopz 03-13-05, 11:03 AM Yesterday my wife and I watched KY squeak out a victory in the SEC tournament and we saw Mr. 3000 and Apollo 13. Ray is outstanding... (IMHO). Foxx hit one out of the park. I made an ATTEMPT to take in Little Black Book with the wife and daughters last night. My girlfriend wanted to spend some quality time at (her) home, so I rented Saw and got some popcorn. Unfortunately, I also stopped in at The NH State Liquor Store on the way home. I had about 5 shots of Remy Martin and may have had a sip of peppermint schnapps while I was at it. The movie was great. I don't normally like this type of movie, but had I not been totally impaired, I would highly recommend it! I got the odd feeling that there may have been some thought put into this one! Watched The Transporter and Blackhawk Down. Blackhawk Down was killer with the volume cranked up. Tnilsson 03-15-05, 11:16 AM I had a dads' movie night yesterday and a bunch of us watched the old classic "The Man Who Would Be King". Most of us had grown up with this movie and it was neat to watch it on the big screen. While the movie is great, the need to flip the disk over in the middle is annoying (though it gives you an excuse for a beer break). My wife and I watched "Princess Mononoke" the other night. It was our first venture into anime. While the character animation did not strike us as anything special, the backgrounds were amazing. And it was nice to watch an animated movie that did not have a dumbed-down plot aimed at the kids. In fact, given the bloodshed and monsters in the movie, our kids will have to wait a few years before they get to see it. I am definitely up for trying more anime, I just have to figure out which one to watch next. We also recently watched "Ray." Though the acting was dead-on, the movie as a whole seemed more like a made for TV movie than a big-budget studio release. We later watched "De-Lovely" and I have to admit that I thought it was the more entertaining of the two films (though both took liberties with their subjects). MileHighJC 03-15-05, 06:05 PM At the request of my two youngest, we watched Monsters Inc last night.. I had forgotten what a fun movie that is. "Saw" was a messed up ride while sober - I can't imagine watching it while drunk. :D For anyone who hasn't seen it but likes "Seven"-esque styled thrillers, check this one out. It's a surprisingly clever story-plot, even though it has more holes than a block of swiss cheese. Jamiecrane is right - you won't be disappointed. (unless you're a stickler for complete detail in the plot) I found it to be a gory equal of a Napoleon Dynamite type movie - after I was done with Napoleon I was thoroughly entertained, yet thought "what the hell did I just watch?" I don't get the obvious use (misuse) of old style technology that just doesn't fit. Communicating between decks by use of corded telephones like an old war battleship? A war board where they push models around like WWII; what happened to computerized displays? You would also think they would have additional defenses besides just sending out fighter pilots to get killed off. Even the medicine seems out of place; the way the chemotherapy was administered to the President - very 20th century. Even if this isn't Star Trek, you would think they would make some more technological leaps from this century if they could accomplish interstellar flight. Dan Forsyth 03-17-05, 08:05 PM The incredibles are getting a lot of praise. SR1355 03-17-05, 09:11 PM Just getting ready to go in and watch Blade with my wife. Looking forward to a much better experience that the last time we watched it on our 61" DLP Sammy. Upgraded to dedicated 96" HT, Panny 700, 7.2 Triad Speaker system. Should be awesome. MileHighJC 03-17-05, 10:00 PM Incredibles last night... very good, as much fun in the HT as it was in the Cinema. The new short "Jack Jack Attack" was cute too... my two youngest daughters were howling with laughter. Not suprising I guess since they thought Jack Jack was the best part of the movie itself. jc Brown Radagast 03-18-05, 10:56 AM My daughter recently finished reading Kipling's "Rikki Tikki Tavi" for school (she liked it so much, she read it 3 times!), so I thought I'd surprise her and treat her to the Chuck Jones cartoon version that played a lot during the 70's. So, the DVD came in the mail yesterday, and we watched it over dinner. For the most part the cartoon remained true to the short story, and my daughter enjoyed it. Not much up to snuff compared to animation nowadays, but it was interesting to watch my daughter's reaction to the cartoon and to see how the written word and one's imagination matches up to another's conception of the same material using animation as a medium. (I can't believe I just typed that - I gotta relax, it is Friday, after all!) :D Tonight, Mulan II at the Radagast Family Theater (still under construction, but open for business). i70x7 03-18-05, 11:58 AM Inredibles Tuesday & Thursday Night. Very much a recommended movie. I agree that Jack Jack Attack was great... my friends and I watched it 4 times in a row, and it still doesn't get old :D |
