Before Sunrise and it's sequel Before Sunset. I didn't really care for "Before Sunrise", but since I had both, I decided to watch "Before Sunset" anyway, and I liked it a lot better. They are both similar in the way they are made. Constant dialogue between the two main characters, so it is strange that I would like one but not the other. I just connected with the sequel better.

Chopper - Very violent. Eric Bana does a great job. If you don't mind the violence, and like "gangster" flicks, I recommend it.

The Incredibles was last night - hoped for one more too but we started late.

My Buttkickers got a BIG workout on that one. There's some very impressive LFE in that movie!

Tonight's "Ray" - looking forward to it!

Last night we watched "Shall We Dance" with Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon and Jennifer Lopez.

I went in with low expectations and was surprised I enjoyed the movie as much as I did. The dance scene with Jennifer in the dark was amazing.

I have been out of the country quite a bit the last six months and have a large backlog of movies to catch up on.

The grandkids are coming over today and I have to fire up the Bishop Cineplex:

Pioneer Big Screen: Shark Tale and The Incredibles

BG808: Chronicles of Riddick and I Robot

Sony 1251: Wimbledon, Forgotten

ECP4000: Mr. 3000 and Bourne Supremacy

Good to be home!

Dan,

3 Kids, 8 Grandkids, 5 dogs, 19 guinea pigs and they all want to watch different movies.

Wife and I buy 2-3 movies a week.

Nice to be home though...2 weeks ago I was stuck in the Amsterdam airport - 24 inches of snow in 24 hours.

Well, while the wife is in California I spent some time in the theater this weekend. Had time to watch Predator 2, since I already had the first one. Also watched the rest of Gladiator which I had started last night. Broke open FotR EE as well. It still amazes me how even movies you've seen, sometimes many times, still are a treat on the big screen at home. :-)

PS - As soon as the wife gets home we will be watching the Incredibles! and going to see Robots!

Watched the Incredibles with my daughter twice over the weekend.

I don't have those fancy-shmancy seat speaker thingies, but my daughter enjoyed an old school version of this sensarround feeling for the jet-evading-the missiles scene: I stood behind her and shook, shimmied and tilted the recliner that she was sitting in! She had a blast!:D

I watched "I Robot" the other night. Really good picture and surround sound. Even a decent plot, which is nothing I expected from a Will Smith movie!

Watched two art house flicks too: "Bubba Ho-Tep" and "Bread & Tulips". While neither blew me away with their picture or sound, they were both refreshing movies in their own ways. If you want something different from your average Hollywood movie, try them out.

I loved the "old school" surround effect of moving the chair around during the Incredibles! I will have to pick that movie up for the weekend as I missed it in the theaters.

We just got all three seasons of the original Star Trek series and watched "The Trouble with Tribbles" with our kids. It was the first time they had ever seen the show, While my 5-year old daughter complained that there was not enough fighting on the show (she is a fan of Kim Possible's martial art moves), I thought the picture was impressive for such an old TV show. In fact, the picture is almost too good because you can really see how cheesy the props and costumes are!

My Son came home from Spring Break and brought the "Borne Supremacy" DVD.
(My College Kid Son actually BUYS DVDs as opposed to BURNING them)
I put that in last night and watch it. Good story, however I guess I needed to have seen the first one. The car chase seen in the end was one of the best I have ever seen. Especially when he kept getting Broad-Sided.

Tonight it is the Michigan State University vs Duke. State isn't as strong as they have been in the past, but no matter they do have one of the best coaches in the NCAA. Hmm...so does Duke. Coach Izzo vs Coach K. I just wish they were meeting in the Final Four. We still remember the Riots in East Lansing a few years back when State lost to Duke. I just hope win or lose it is a good game with good officiating. That is all you can ask.

My wife left half-way through Sky Captain too. I stuck with it because of the concept and pretty picture but have to admit that the plot could have been a lot better. It had the potential to be a nostalgic classic like the first or third Indiana Jones movie.

True, regarding the effects but I was impressed with some of the matte work for example. There were people walking on the streets below when Deckerd is hanging from the building that couldn't have been more than a few pixels in size. That probably didn't have to do this at the time but chose to.

The constant rain almost the entire film in the streets at night, the vastness of the city,so many things ,just enjoyable all around.

Last night I watched Ray for the first time. I enjoyed it very much and I'm glad Foxx got the prize. I also rented Sky Captain. I got the popcorn, dimmed the lights, got my coffee and opened the DVD case, oly to find that some nit-wit at blockbuster had inserted a copy of The Rock where my Sky Captain should have been. Of course I live in another town now, so I couldn't just go back and return it. I wound up watching boxing on HBO.

After the boxing, I still wanted to watch something, so I threw in "Y Tu Mama Tambien". It's amazing how the same language can sound so different in different cultures. I speak fluent spanish, and I still had to use the english subtitles to understand the dialogue because of the heavy Mexican dialect.

That's a movie that just gets better with age for me. I remember seeing it many years back when they re-released new Ridley cut of it to theaters. Great flic that holds up well over time.

Yesterday, watched Napoleon Dynamite again. My brother and cousin hadn't seen it. That movie just crackes me up so much. My brother didn't like it, my cousin loved it. After that, all the family came in and we watched The Incredibles. Good action, but maybe it wasn't funny after watching Napoleon Dynamite right before it. My uncle asked why we weren't laughing.

On the second disk, we watched the baby sitter short film. That was much funnier than the movie. Also watched the cartoon anime extra. It was kinda amusing if you expect it to be stupid. But then we rewatched it with the commentary. THEN it was funny. They had Mr Incredible and Frozone doing commentary on the bad anime of them.

We finally watched "the Incredibles" over the weekend. The animation was, well, incredible. And the plot was good too. But, with the exception of the "Jack Jack" short, it was just not as funny as we expected (and what was the point of that Sheep short?). Maybe we just waited too long to see the movie and got our expectations too high based on all the utterly rave reviews we had heard. Ah well, that's the risk of waiting to see something until it is out on DVD.

We also watched "Finding Neverland." Good movie with very good acting (though it won't put your HT system through its paces like "The Incredibles" will).

I just came back from returning Ray and the Sky Captain that actually contained The rock inside the DVD case. The boys that were there found the Rock case with the Sky Captain disk in it. They gave me two free rentals for my inconvenience. I gladly took a verified copy of Sky Captain and I also took Troy.

I have my brand new girlfriend Sheila coming over this rainy night to "watch" movies, so will you guys volunteer to tell me how any of these actually end?:D ;) (just kidding, of course!)

Watched the live action Peter Pan last night to see if it would be okay for our kids to watch--it was supposedly darker and more violent than prior versions. While it was darker and more violent, it had great effects and is the best interpretatin of the Peter Pan story we have seen. It should be fine for kids aged 6 and above (or for younger kids if they are already used to darker movies).

Just finished "Mystic River". Wow...what a good movie. It was a nice test of my dual tuner DVR. I can not tell any difference in PQ from this recording in HD to watching it "live". The 5.1 surround is awesome as well. I am glad I waited until now to get a recording device for my TV. Having a dual tuner and it can record in HD is worth the wait. This changes everything for me now that I can record shows, movies, etc. The HD part is the Icing on the Cake.

I know this is OLD news for most of you good people here but I have been waiting patiently for years until the right moment to get something like this. Mrs Dood even is impressed. She loves fast forwarding through commercials. Now I can get some sleep during the week and watch at my leisure.

Vanity Fair....Dumb. Bad acting and terrible story line. Too long as well.
Sense and Sensibility...much better period film. Great acting and excellent actors. Rented it just to get the bad taste of Vanity Fair out of my mouth.

04-02-05, 09:52 PM
Randy,

I am sure the book was better but the story and the many subplots were all over the map - completely disjointed. Neither my wife nor I could keep up. On top of that, we just didn't feel or care for any of the characters. There was little humor in this version as well but I imagine there were plenty of opportunities for such. I imagine the humor would have been sharp yet delivered with a velvet hammer. Too bad....it was more of sad tale than anything else. Reese Witherspoon had glimmers of greatness but it never came through. The transcription from the book to the big screen was obviously lacking. It was also about an hour too long.
The soundtrack was also flat and dialog was recorded on the low side. Add that to the European dialects and dialog wasn't the easiest to follow.

Sense and Sensibility, on the other hand, was a breath of fresh air. A similar film but funny, touching and well acted. The characters are well fleshed out and though a tad long, it wraps up as neatly as a john Hughes film. I would recommend this film (technically the dialog, though always intelligible seemed all over the place in terms of levels (varying from normal to high - speaking to closely to the microphone).

Yesterday afternoon the boys, Angela and I watched Sky Captain again but this time in HD on PPV. When I see such a visual experience this clear I sit there and say how lucky I am to live in this day !:)

Last night I watched the Bogart film Dead Reckoning for the first time. He played his usual street smart ,deeply honorable character. I wish he had gotten his break earlier since he was getting a little too old( or old looking) to play these parts by then. An entertaining film, I never lost interest. Most of you are too young to remember the TV show The Millionaire but as a child I remember how each week this guy would go to someones door and give away one million dollars in the name of a benefactor. The guy at the door was the psychopathic thug in this film and I'd never seen him any other place.

Finding Neverland

A beautiful, imaginative film. Well acted and moving. The film really touched my wife and I. The boy, Peter, was just such a natural. I found it a very good effort. The last few movies I have rented have been terrible. I can't say enough about this one...a rewarding experience..

As for the sound. As mainly a dialog driven film, the dialog was almost perfect. Every syllable intelligible. I watched at -2 from reference. There were a few scenes with prominent surround and bass, but they were the exception. The score is beautiful, but its recording a flat.
The picture was grainy....even to the point of some dirt. Close ups were very sharp but the colors lacked some vibrance and a bit muted. EE was prominent in many scenes. The overall video was certainly passable but the sad story and the period of the film made the slight grain somewhat fitting for this melancholy tale - sort of like a stylized look......(but serendipitously added ).

** Oddly, the transfer showed a barely noticeable horizontal, faint black line through the entire DVD (it was the entire length of the screen). It was about 1" up from the bottom on my 10 ft wide screen. It was there start to finish. The film is 2.35 aspect. I can't imagine it was a faulty DVD. Odd......

We just watched Saw this week. Very good surround sound action with this movie and the WAF factor was great. Subs got some work out also. At first she(we) thought it would have too much blood and gore, but was really not bad. Done tastefully if you pardon the pun. I would recomend this one, even for the faint of heart. Wife actually said it was pretty good movie when over.

We followed this one a day later with "Garage Days". Very entertaining but deserved its R rating. Had good music to test out the speakers for their music quality.

We also watched just a couple of minutes of two IMAX movies that we recently got: "Blue Planet" and "Africa: The Serengeti". On our 100" 4x3 screen, they looked amazingly close to what I recall seeing in an actual IMAX theater. If you have a 4x3 screen and PJ, the IMAX titles seem well worth trying out as they are serious eye-candy.

Just got my replacement copy of Jurassic Park in DTS and watched it again yesterday to hear the fixed LFE. What a great film!

Stunning PQ on the widescreen TV (1.85:1 AR, yes!) and the sound was house-shaking!

For those who don't already know, if you have an early edition of the DTS version of Jurassic Park (D1R1), Universal will replace it for free with the fixed version (D1R2) which improves the LFE portions of the film.

How do you go about getting the replacement? Is it as simple as mailing it back in to Universal? Whats the procedure?

We watched Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow from HD PPV on Saturday. Really enjoyed the visuals, but was constantly distracted by the odd "lighting."

I watched Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy on Sunday, which had a few moments but was basically a waste.

The last round of the Masters was certainly fun to watch, even if it was only marginally HDTV. Lots of bad upconversion.

How do you go about getting the replacement? Is it as simple as mailing it back in to Universal? Whats the procedure? Originally, about a year ago, I sent my request to Universal via email and they asked for my home address and said they would send a pre-paid envelope to me. I was to place my old version of Jurassic Park in the envelope (JUST the DVD, not the case) and return it to them. Once they got it, they said they would send me a replacement. I waited about 8 months for the envelope to show up, but it never did. So I sent another request to Universal and this time they just asked for my address and said a replacement disk would be sent ASAP. They didn't ask for the original disk this time. I waited another 3 months before emailing them AGAIN and told them I still hadn't received anything. About 20 minutes after I sent that email I got a reply from somone at Universal who appologized and told me my replacement disk had been mailed that day. About a week later I received it.

My advice to you is to email them, tell them you have the defective version and just ask if a replacement disk can be sent to you. The email address I used was exclusively for Canadian residents (UniversalCanadaHomeVideo@nbcuni.com) so you might need to check the Universal homepage to see which address to write to.

Go to the Universal Studios homepage, click on Universal Studios DVD at the top of the page, then click Contact Us at the top of that page, click I Accept, click DVD & VHS under Entertainment section, click on the resulting Contact Us link to send them a message regarding your DVD.

Hope that helps. Hopefully it won't take a year for you to get your replacement.

I've been watching the first season of "Futurama." I had heard so many good things about it, the first few episodes were a bit of a letdown. Then at the halfway point (about the 6th episode), it's like somebody flipped a light switch and they just became HILARIOUS. Every episode after that was just so funny. I can't wait to pick up season 2 now. Very good show.

Watched both Alien and Aliens last night for about the billionth time. The fun part was that I watched them with a friend who had NEVER seen either of them before. He's 25 years old and had never seen them. I just couldn't believe it.

It was like reliving the original terror, watching him. He was totally spooked. It was so much fun to just watch his face out of the corner of my eye during the really terrifying moments. Such fun...

We finished around 1:00am and he said he was going to go home and watch a Disney movie before going to bed, just to calm his nerves. I laughed so hard...

LOL

I had a similar experience when I watched Wizard of Oz & The Ten Commandments with my daughter not too long ago - she's only 10 yrs, so this was the first viewing of either movie for her.

For Wiz there were certain parts where my daughter had been lying down, but all of a sudden sat upright - you could see how engrossed she was in the movie!

For Moses & Co., she would exclaim "Cool!" for the special effects, despite how outdated the technology of said effects were...she had the "heebee-jeebees" and moved next to me for the Death Angel fog creeping through the town scene - heehee heee!

No way she'd be that engrossed in a movie if it was on our old 27" TV!

Saturday night was A Knight's Tale - love the integration of modern music in that movie. It was the first time I'd seen it in the HT (have watched it on my RPTV) and was blown away by the colors and image quality.

We watched Ray over the weekend, and it's a great movie.

One warning though, the "Extended Edition" option has a flaw. If you select this option, the disk automatically switches the deleted scenes into the flow of the movie. That's fine, EXCEPT ...

The deleted scenes are letterboxed 4:3, and the rest of the movie is anamorphic widescreen. So every time the "musical notes" cue appeared on the screen, I had to change my projection format. Really annoying and distracting!

Last night we watched "Blade Trinity". I'm a fan of the Blade series (yes... I'm easily entertained), and after watching "Blade 2" in the HT on Sunday (and loving the audio from it), I was excited to see/hear the 3rd one in the HT.

I was disappointed in the fact that the 6.1 soundtrack gave me nothing at all (maybe a setting is off on my 7.1 receiver - an NAD T773), and the 5.1 soundtrack just sounded plain lousy. It was almost like the center channel did nothing and all the dialog was split to the fronts. It was odd - it just sounded... flat.

I liked the movie, but it was odd seeing "Van Wilder" trying to be a badass vampire hunter. The humor cracked me up, but seemed out of place for a Blade movie. I also thought it was pretty interesting that the first and second Blades were more or less profanity-free - while this one was a constant flow of F-bombs. (not that that bothers me, but it was an observation that our guests and I had)

Watched Blade Trinity friday night. It was pretty good but it didn't really go with the other two. It was a little better than the last movie and the comedy thrown in kept it kinda interesting but there wasn't as much action. Seems like they picked up a bunch of supporting actors from lower quality movies and threw them in. The movie went by fairly quick. The end was a bit confusing. I finally rehung my projector after 6 months of HT Construction, so we've been catching up on a backlog of DVDs. I also joined blockbuster.com, so we'll be seeing several that we otherwise wouldn't rent.

"The Incredibles" was officially the first movie (the original HT completion target date was for the DVD release... I missed that one by a bit  )... it looked and sounded incredible. We'd seen it in the theaters and I enjoyed it even more at home.

I haven't seen "Kill Bill" in a while and for some reason it caught my eye on my DVD shelf... I like KB1&2, but I'd never noticed how good the sound was. It was midnight and I had it cranked up pretty loud, enjoying the extensive effort I put into my HT's sound containment and sound treatments. The final scenes with the Bride and O-Ren Ishii... great stuff. Anyways, I really enjoyed it but it seemed odd to be grinning (about sound and PQ) all the way through some grusome scenes.

My kids had friends over and watched "National Treasure" (good) and "Lemony Snickets" (not so good but my kids like it because the read all the books).

"Ray"... really good.

Last night, my wife and I watched "Stepford Wives". I'll watch anything with Nicole Kidman. But UGH. Worst movie we've seen in years. I tried to get into the bizarre groove (Twilight Zone, Beetlejuice), but couldn't do it.

Interesting. I'd pretty much discounted National Treasure, but it sounds like it might be worth a rental.

Being in a silly mood, I watched Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle on HD pay-per-view. It was indeed silly, and fun in its extreme non-PC way.

Last night we watched City of God, which requires a little effort, being a subtitled movie (in portugese). The effort is worthwhile -- it's a very well-made movie and a fascinating story.

The text description was great in that link but the magnitude of the blocking in Chronicles was several orders of magnitude more severe and ,due to all of the motion I'm sure, extremely frequent.

Hotel Rwanda - how this movie DIDN'T win any Oscars is a mystery to me. But it moves Don Cheadle up several notches in my pantheon of actors.

Well worth renting if you're in the mood for something other than the latest popcorn flick. The filmmakers did a good job of conveying the violence taking place, without painting the screen with gore.

Jst found this thread. I'm always looking for new stuff to watch. Now I have a list of things to look for.

This past week I watched.

Cabin boy. most people think its one of the worst movies they have ever seen. I love it. I saw it when it first came out and have alway gotten the humor. The quality is great the colors are very bright and vivid. Worth watching just for that.

Lemony Snicket with the kids. Its a very much like a tim burton film. It was just begging for a danny elfman soundtrack. I kind of liked it. There is a part with great sound when a house gets blown down by a storm.

Underworld. I love vampire movies. Its not quite the lost boys or interview but its pretty good. Has anyone seen the extended version? Is it worth buying?

I watched "Soldier" w/ Kurt Russell on Show-HD yesterday afternoon. From what I read at IMDB.com about 50% liked it and 50% hated it.

I thought it was a decent flick. I admire Kurt Russell for the risks he takes on movie roles. Also Connie Nielsen looked just down right beautiful.

"The Italian Job" on Friday. Funny - I drove my family to the local mall for dinner later on, I thought I was driving normally, but after dinner my wife rushed to the driver's door, and soon thereafter stated that she doesn't like my driving, I was going too fast! I guess minivans don't corner as well as those mini coopers, huh? :D (Incidentally, we went to Wendy's, now that the unofficial mass hysteria ban has been lifted - got free Frostees for everyone!)

"House of Flying Daggers" on Saturday. Good fight scenes and some interesting plot twists, but I think some of the interaction scenes were a mite slow - for me they didn't "click", and later on in the movie I had to FF through some of those scenes. Another "EHH" rating...

"Shaun of the Dead" (link (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365748/))... my wife saw this in the theater with her cousin and thought I'd like it... definitely unique and quirky. It's not a gory horror flick... more like a British "Fargo". Keep those kids out of listening range though... constant profanity.

"David Gilmour" Live... this shines like a crazy diamond in several spots, but overall, I'd have to give my preference to Roger Water's DVD.

"Rush Live in Rio"... good stuff... lots of songs.

Band of Brothers, episodes 1 & 2 - downloaded via HBO/Comcast - SD quality, but full 5.1 audio! I had to keep turning down the volume for the firefights, and noticed that my dog was jumpy during those scenes! I had previously watched some of the other episodes - and was waiting for the DVD set to go down a little (< $40 - wishful thinking?) - but am happy that for a limited time I can download and view all of the episodes!

My CRT was tweaked on Saturday by MP and it has never looked better. During Manchurian Candidate, I kept saying to my wife, "wow, look at the detail in that picture"... she agreed, but at the end she said, "great picture, but what did you think about the movie?" Oh yeah, the movie, I guess it was pretty good.

And I'm still in love with the sound treatments in my HT. The sound in FNL was great... the crowd noise, the clashing tackle impacts, the rocking soundtrack. Good stuff. Plus, I grew up in the South where high school football on Friday nights was King. Billy Bob Thornton did a good job... I wonder if they'll keep his character's language under control in Bad News Bears, too.

Not trying to get political, long story short. My Fiance is Bosnian, went throught the war, blah blah blah. She says the portrayal of the UN or "Smurfs" as they called them was pretty dead on in this film. I suppose it's a matter of perspective.

Dzejms, I did not have any problem with the depiction of the UN in "No Man's Land" as ineffectual and bogged down by red tape and politics. But the movie went over the top and depicted them as one-sided cartoon characters, even giving the UN commander a slutty secretary in a pin-striped suit with a mini skirt who wanted to have sex with him on his desk when he was supposed to be working! I just think the movie would have been much stronger if it had portrayed the UN characters with the same respect it portrayed the other characters.

Ah, that I agree with. From what I hear it was the UN soldiers, not the commanders, who were galavanting with the local village and city women. Tanovic's portrayal is likely based on his personal experiences with a few bad apples. Great movie otherwise. :)

Also watched Tokyo Story because of all the press it has lately received as being the best, or at the very least one of the 10 best, movies ever made. The story is simple and the film is quiet, but very good. Even though it gives the story away, I wish I had read the essay about the movie on Criterion's website before I watched it as it says a lot about the unique nature of the movie that would have been nice to have known before watching it, things like the fact that the director set his camera 3' above the ground and just left it there (so you'd have a view like the people who sit on the mats in a Japanese theater), etc. Roger Ebert also has a good review of the movie in his "great movies" section on his website. All in all, a very worthwhile rental and I can see why it is so acclaimed.

"A Dirty Shame" was a bit tamer than most John Waters movies, and in that regard it was almost more enjoyable. There's some great one-liners that can be dissected from this movie.

My parents were in town to visit the grandkids.

This was the first time they've seen the finished HT.

I turned on the projector, I had "Alison Krauss and Union Station" in HD on the DVR, I only meant to let it play while I found a DVD to watch. They were hooked.

The next night we watched "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" (http://imdb.com/title/tt0346156/). My Dad like it. I wasn't as impressed...

Possible spoilers below...

So who was this Sky Captain... did he just fly around waiting for a customized distress signal like Batman? It seemed like a rip off from every movie in history... a touch of Wizard of Oz (which was showing in the theater at the beginning of the movie, but the dead island villian reminded me of the Great Oz), Raiders of the Lost Ark, Iron Giant. Jude Law never bothered me before, but now I'm tired of him. Frankie just happened to be in the area as gas ran out? And I still don't get the Adam and Eve test tubes. And if this villian was so smart, why did he need to build robots to steal generators, why not just build the generators?

The robots marching through the city streets at the beginning had some big LFE.

Different. Stylish. But weak.
