I thought I'd kick off a new thread and see if I can find some interesting movies.
So here's the question: What movies did you watch in your home theater this week and would you recommend them?
Here's my list:
Friday: The Life Of David Gale
Saturday (double feature night!): Mr Mom & The Bourne Identity
All are recommended. The kids had never seen Mr. Mom and we all enjoyed it. This was the free DVD that Pizza Hut was giving away and be warned, it was "Standard" or full screen. But free's hard to beat and the picture quality was fine.
The Life Of David Gale was well done. I can say little about it without blowing the story. Worth seeing.
I really liked The Bourne Identity. We saw it last year in the theaters and were pleasantly surprised. It is very high energy and a well done spy flick. Best Buy had it for $17.99 in a 2 pack with "Spy Games", which was also better than expected.
So what was showing at your theater the first weekend of August?

Excellent thread!
I agree with the Bourne ID and David Gale. Kevin Spacey is so easy to watch in almost any movie.
And Mr. Mom is a classic!
This weekend we rented 3 to give our Saturday visitors a choice. Sweet Home Alabama, Dark Blue, and Blood Work. They chose Blood Work. It's a well acted and written movie, even if the racial undertones smack you in the forehead once or twice. It has some twists and turns, but it's easy enough to figure out what's going to happen by the end of the first half hour if you're a good detective. I'd give it a 3 out of 5. Stars Clint Eastwood and Paul Rodriguez.
Last night we watched Sweet Home Alabama. Being a transplanted New Yorker living in the deep south for almost 40 years now, I could identify with the stereotypes from both sides. (The deep south parts of the film were made less than 70 miles from here) The cliches were a little over the top, but the movie overall was very well written and acted. I'd give it a 3.9 out of 5. Stars Reese Witherspoon, Candice Bergen, and many other recognizable comedy actors.
We didn't have a chance to see Dark Blue. Maybe we can fit it in tonight, or re-rent it again later. Has anyone seen it?

Well, this weekend we screened the Sam Jackson, John Travolta flick "Basic". I'm really not sure what to say about this movie... I consider myself a pretty smart guy, and quite capable of following almost any plot line.
But... after watching this I'm really not quite sure what the point was. I just think that the movie tried to be a little _too_ clever for its own good. With more twists than a bag of pretzels - this one really keeps you guessing. Unfortunately, it doesn't keep you guessing _until_ the very end... it keeps you guessing _past_ the very end. I can only give it 2.5/5 stars.
I'm sure that a second viewing would clear things up a bit, but should I really need to do that? I think not.

This weekend I witnessed a first-my wife usually does not get into movies that much but she requested a movie from netflix (divine secrets of the ya-ya sisterhood) and watched it TWICE once with the commentary. I was quite pleased that she finally got the enjoyment out of it that I always do.
The other was X-Men (which she watched also) I have heard that x-2 is supossed to be really good so I wanted her to se the first one.
According to my wife Ya-Ya is very good and x men is a well done par for the course superhero type movie that is well acted with a good soundtrack.

Well i'm just finishing my theater. So after three months of working on it every weekend my three year old wanted to come down and watch a movie with daddy. So there we were sitting on the floor with no furniture watching , you guessed it Toy story 2 and Monsters Inc. I wont review these I think they stand on their own. Cant wait to add more to this thread down the road.
P.S. The wife who has been supportive but didn't really see the attraction to home theater was very impressed .

We watched that one last weekend. I agree completely... they tried way too hard to come up with the twists, and most of them made no sense. I also hate when they do that "Here's the plan... <whisper, whisper>" stuff in a suspense movie. That stuff is fine in cartoons, but not a major motion picture trying to be full of suspense.
I also found the film to be visually so dark and gloomy that it was annoying. It was probably meant to be depressing and mysterious, but it just made it difficult to make out the action and the characters, especially since several of the main characters were black.
I'd give it a 1.75.
Az
Friday Night we watched "Catch Me if You Can" with Tom Hanks and DeCapprio... I thought it was a good movie...I had never heard the story before.
Saturday Night we watched "Dare Devil" with Jenifer Garner and Ben something ;-) ... some good action and surround effects...little long....but good flick.

This weekend was a "catch-up" comedy weekend, movies we missed on release date. Friday Night: National Lampoons: Van Wilder Saturday Night: Old School
It is ironic how similar these movies are, full of sophomoric humor. Both are worth watching if you want to laugh and veg-out, we are remodeling the office so sheer exhaustion dictates light movies for the next couple weekends. Both are probably a solid 2.5 out of 5 - rent don't buy.

Great thread Capt Randy. I'm just starting the build out of my theater and it is easy to forget why I am going through the hassle. So even though its not finished, I did manage to catch a couple of movies.
the first movie I watched was the Matrix. It was the first time I had seen it and now I understand what the fuss was about. I'm not a big Keanu Reeves fan but he did a good job in this movie.
The second movie I watched was An Affair to Remember. I like the old stuff but it was the first time I had seen this one too. A must see movie for film buffs.
both movies put me in the"theater building mode..."

David is right, Basic is good, but not great. I watched it Friday night. I am big fan of adult movies--no! not those kind of adult movies, I mean mature films for adults. I can't watch a movie that doesn't have that kind of depth. In other words, you won't find me watching Disney. So with that in mind, I thought Basic was an interesting film, in that it brought up adult issues, sometimes in a subtle way.
And seeing as how this is a forum about A/V gear, let me tell you, I was very pleased when this movie started, and the words "Dolby Digital EX" scrolled across the display of my Rotel preamp/processor. I love 6.1/7.1, and don't watch nearly enough movies with /EX or /ES soundtracks.
Sunday, Some friends brought over the extended version of Lord of the Ring. I nearly popped when I saw that the soundtrack was 6.1 discrete. This was one that I saw at the local cineplex, and my big question is: Why did they chop this one all to hell and leave Gangs of New York at over three hours? The extended LOTR is much better than the theatrical version; it is better paced, and it better sets up the next movie. It really deserved more from the theatrical release.
Thursday afternoon - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Friday afternoon - Monster's Inc.
Saturday no power :( til 3 AM
Sunday evening - Trading Spaces HD (just got Discovery HD Theater)
Carolina Preserves HD ( just got PBS HD - no loop anymore!)
X Men 1.5
Glad to have the power back on - thirteen hours is a long time - especially when you are trying to use power tools to complete your HT!

The Zero Effect --- Great flick IMO relitively unknown by most give it a shot if you're in the mood for "something different".
simonsez
08-04-03, 04:56 PM
I agree...Zero Effect is a great movie.
I actually bought two copies, my first copy was loaned to a "friend" who moved away. It was easier to buy a new copy rather that try to get him to mail it to me.
I wanted to hear my sound system go for it, so I threw in Apollo 13 yesterday. I wasn't disappointed.
On Thursday night we watched DareDevil and I thought that was great also. The wife liked it very much as well.
We saw Basic a couple of weeks ago and I think it sucked out loud. The only thing I enjoyed was the big tidal wave clip at the intro.
Gus
PS: Awesome thread Captain!

Thanks - it is a great thread.
I'm already making my list of movies to watch - I hadn't heard of Zero Point in years - I'll have to track down a copy. Apollo 13 it a great flick - we had 11 people view it recently - nice rumble launching a Saturn V rocket!

Wow, I can't believe so many of you didn't like Basic. It was very similar to The Generals Daughter. I thought the movie was creative how it led you down the road of just another who done it flick, to posssibly think that she did it. Then out of left field it was all planned to bring her into the fold. Ooops did I spoil it for some of you, Sorry  . Anyway, John Travolta is a great actor and is probably the only one who could pull it off. I liked it and was pleasantly surprised with the ending.
Now Star Trek Nemisis was ho-hum. I am a star trek fan and I like this particular cast but the film was not to exciting and somewhat tedious.

I broke in my new HT this weekend with "DareDevil"....good surround effects. Not a gad movie...3.5/5. Had my wifes sister come over to watch and she was blown away by the sound....you can never hear enough " It's just like at the movies". Then we put in T2...just awesome.
I agree with TripleE....need more movies with the EX or ES channel.

Nice thread..
Monday - Ice Age
Tuesday - Drumline
Wednesday - The Big Hit & Equilibrium
Thursday - Who knows yet =)
Ice age started a tad lame, but ended up being pretty good. If you like monsters inc, toy story etc.. You would like it.
Drumline was Looooong. But was decent. rent not buy.
The big hit just rocks. Very bassy music, tons of gun play/explosions/chases. A very underrated film. I think it's Mark Walbergs best. Also stars Lou Diamond Phillips as a g-dog hehe. Great flick for the big screen. 16x9 also.
Equilibrium - The movie is a tad slow, but the action scenes are better then the Matrix. There just isnt enough of them. The main guy in this film is incredible. He is trained to take on large groups of people with an interesting fighting technique. Every time an action scene came on, gunplay, swordplay, or melee, I noticed everyone sitting up straight and in total AWE.
I recommend this film highly, a hugely under marketed film. Watch it for the action.
Tonight might be Zero Effect, or a chick flick like how to lose a guy in 10 days. (Very good chick flick I might add)

Saturday night - Jaws (4.5/5 movie; 4.5/5 presentation)
Sunday day - Bourne Identity (3.5/5; 4/5)
Sunday night - Punch Drunk Love (4.5/5; 4/5)
Tuesday night - Dangerous Liasions (3/5; 2/5)
Wednesday night - Adaptation (3.5/5; 4/5)
Jaws on the big screen was fantastic. Parents who took me to see it when I was 5 were forced to shiver through it (gotcha back). Bourne Identity is a pretty good action flick with some great scenes but a sketchy plot (nowhere near as engrossing as the book). Punch Drunk Love - a joy. Dangerous Liasions is my wife's fav movie so we watched it on DVD for the first time and boy was it a labor. Great acting and great story that got old after 1.5 hours. The transfer quality was shite. Adaptation was a movie I expected to LOVE so I was a bit disappointed. Better than most Hollywood drivel but nowhere near the experience of Being John Malkovich.

So far in August:
Aug 1st : Starship Troopers ... A Masterpiece
Aug 3rd : Pee-Wee's Big Adventure ... Hilarious for kids & adults. An all-time favorite
Aug 3rd : Narc ... Gritty undercover police drama. Not bad.
Aug 5th : Super Mario Brothers ... Absolutely Horrible. Worse than Master of Disguise(!)
Aug 5th : Chris Rock-Bigger & Blacker ... Funny HBO special from '99
Aug 6th : Spider ... Great acting. Bizarre movie.

Last Night's feature was "The Life of David Gale". Kevin Spacey is a wonderful actor. The female lead in the film was also quite good. The movie had a good plot as well. The video and audio quality were good also.
Planned for this weekend:
Friday Night: RAMS 1st Pre-Season Game !!!! :)
Saturday Night: Das Boot
Sunday Afternoon: Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
Sunday: Waiting for Guffman (hadn't seen it yet and I liked it. Netflix rental but I accidentally mailed them back a cdr in the envelope so I still have the movie).
Monday: Shadow of the Vampire (marvelous as usual).
From Tuesdays DVD release bounty:
Tuesday: The Sure Thing (always good when you need a Cusack fix).
Last night: Valley Girl (it's like, totally one of my all time favorites).
Tonight: either Soylent Green or Omega Man (haven't decided yet). Who knows.. maybe I'll go *really* crazy and throw in Casablanca.

With that mix skip Casablanca and run the original Planet of the Apes!
Randy
Hmmm... a Heston triple feature might just be the thing, but then I'll have to watch the rest of the POTA movies after that, and then the TV show, and I'll probably have to call in sick tomorrow :).
Tonight: Redsox vs Anaheim (Redsox currently spanking Angels 7:2)
Friday: Mulholland Drive (Have to take advantage, 7 y-o is on vacation in Florida with his aunty)
Saturday: Life Of David Gale
Sunday: Soylent Green??
I didn't know Soylent green was out on DVD. I've never seen it, but sounds like my cup of tea. Is the PQ any good?

Man, I've rented some sucky movies lately. I only liked 1 out of the last 4.
War wagon - John Wayne and Kirk Douglas. GOOD
Darkness Falls - Best part is the name of the film.
Frighteners - Was that the same Peter Jackson as in LOTR? 'cause that movie was just plain lame.
Dog Soldiers - I think they got the werewolf costumes at K-mart.

This week so far:
Super Troopers (funny, intoxicants suggested while viewing)
Read my Lips (interesting premise & camera work, decent film)
Legend of Drunken Master (classic Jackie Chan)
Better off Dead (The best 80s coming of age movie - fast cars, french women, skiing, claymation, good one liners)

It came out on Tuesday but it took some my husband and I some hunting to find a copy (CC didn't have it an Best Buy has a release date of 8/26 in their computers), but a local chain had it.
I didn't see it last night (we ended up being in the mood for a comedy so we watched "Bedazzled" (remake) instead. The PQ for Soylent Green is *supposed* to be pretty true to the source from what I've read (it has an intentional desaturated and kind of smoggy look) but I'll know more when I watch it. I really like it (but I'm a fan of 60's-70's era social science fiction), and I've been waiting for this to come out on DVD as my VHS copy was getting pretty shot.
Thanks Deean. So you recommend it then? I'll try to get my hands on it this week-end.
Gus
I once won a diorama contest by re-creating one of the key scenes with marshmallow peeps (don't click the link until after you've seen the movie if you don't like spoilers, even though it is a bit hard to make out what's going on in the pic), which means either it's a very powerful movie that sticks with you, or I'm a total geek. But regardless of which it is, I'd have to say, yep, I fully recommend it.

Friday Night: Spartacus (up to the intermission - watching with the kids).
Saturday Night: the exciting conclusion of Spartacus (BTW - if you haven't watched this movie, it's a great one for the big screen - especially the march of the Roman legions against the slave army - cast of thousands!)
Also, when I was heading to bed, my wife turned on the TV and "North by Northwest" was just starting - ended up staying up and watching it, too - although I suppose it doesn't count since it wasn't in the theater!
Randy
Friday: TV (Dead Like Me, Free for All and Mr. Hell) so no movies.
Saturday: The first movie was Saving Private Ryan. I think I was one of the few people left who hadn't seen it yet. I thought it was pretty good, but don't know if I'll be seeing it again anytime soon. I liked it more than my husband who thought it was too long and really isn't into much of the new(er) Spielberg movies anyway.
After that I settled in with a nice bowl of ramen (had no desire for any food with the color red in it, go figure) and we watched Soylent Green. It took a little bit to get into it as my brain was throughly scrambled from the prior movie (both content and the shaky cam) but after a while I caught up with the change of pace and was with it.
Gus, if you haven't seen it yet before you read this, PQ was just about as expected from what I'd read about it. Very good for the age of the film. I think some of the outdoor scenes could have used a *slight* bit of DNR with a light touch 'cause there was a lot of MPEG wiggle in the (intentional) grain, and it has some scratches and a couple of torn frames, but overall I was very pleased with the transfer and it looked better than I'd ever seen it. And it was nice to see it in OAR. I forgot to mention before that it's a slower paced story (kind of like the non-action parts of the original Rollerball) and has a very similar somewhat misogynistic bent to it (in case that bothers either you or your SO), just so you know ahead of time.
Sunday (tonight): Don't know yet. Maybe Casablanca, Advertising Rules or Brotherhood of the Wolf.
Jw_Wood, I'm with ya on Darkness Falls. I think I would have had more fun taking the disk out to the backyard and playing AOL diskball with it than watching it.
Cryo, yes, now you know the unfortunate truth behind the secret of Soylent Green. It is a shock to the sensibilities, but professional counseling may help.

The Thing (from another world)...just released.
THEM!
20 Million Miles to Earth.
The Day the Earth stood still..
Godzilla
Even though they were B and W and in Mono Stereo....the memories came flooding back.
Glad to see that they are coming out with these oldies, but goodies. There are still a few I need to pick up.
The Blob (Steve Mcqueen)
Body Snatchers..
This Island Earth...the list goes on and on...
enjoy....

This past weekend we watched Casablanca and Solaris. I have seen Casa before, but it was the first, but not last, time for Solaris. I knew Solaris was about a space station, but knew of nothing else about the movie.

Neat! That sounds like it was a lot of fun!
Sunday night was Casablanca SE. It looked really, really good. The commentary by Roger Ebert was interesting but within half an hour or so I was asleep (no knock on Ebert, commentaries just do that to me). I haven't looked at disk 2 yet.
Last night was Brotherhood of the Wolf. I *think* I liked it, it seemed a little uneven story-wise but mostly good. The sets and scenery were pretty lush, but some of the action sequences looked kinda CG'd up.
I'm not telling my husband it's "Shark Week" as we probably won't be seeing many movies in the next few days if he knows about it :).

I watched Drumline this past weekend. for those that haven't seen it, it is a fairly enjoyable movie with a moral message: You may be selfish and care about nothing but yourself, but if you have enough talent, then you can get away with it. Oh yeah, and if you are in charge of this person, and you try to hold them to the rules like everyone else, you could find yourself out of a job. (Larry Brown- are you listening? Allen Iverson - you have nothing to worry about). :D

My wife and I were out of town all weekend, but got back last night. The kids wanted to watch a TV movie called "Red Water" - a fun cap to Shark Week.
Pretty funny, but I don't think it was supposed to be a comedy . . .
Monday:The Big Sleep (1946 version)
Hadn't seen it yet. I liked the story but PQ was kind of iffy in places (or else I've been too spoiled by the Casablanca SE release).
Tuesday: National Lampoons Van Wilder
Dumb, but funny. Created a new phobia of pastries.
Wednesday:The Recruit
Entertaining, not bad, not super great.
Thursday: news coverage of the blackout.
Friday: TV night.
Saturday (afternoon): Advertising Rules! (aka Victor Vogel: Advertising Man)
I liked it.
(evening) The Omega Man
I'd forgotten how cool Rosalind Cash was in this movie. Somehow though I can't watch this anymore without thinking of Ned Flanders as Mathias.
Sunday: Barton Fink
Hadn't seen it since it first came out. For the best experience watch it on a warm evening with the AC off or down.

Sunday; The Hunted. Tommy Lee Jones, Benicio Del Toro.
It wasn't bad, but the story was pretty shallow. If you've seen the trailer, you've seen the whole story.
The rest was just pure action. The cinematography was good, the location was exhilirating, the sound was dynamic, and most of the acting was pretty good too.

Friday: House of 1000 Corpses.
Good if you are into the "chain saw massacre" thing. Very gruesome. I have to admit, I thought it was well made and kind of funny, though not my style. PQ and SQ were very good.
Saturday: HBO Boxing. A snore-fest.
Sunday: Nefertiti, Resurrected on Discovery. I fell asleep, but not because of the show. I had a rough saturday night. Had about 12 billion margaritas while watching boxing. Wife loved it.

The weekend movie fest was a success!
Best friends and children stayed for a weekend of swimming, grilling and movie thrilling!
- Kids loved "Monsters Inc., Ice Age, and Toy Story"
- Big Kids (dads)loved "Tears of the Sun"
- Wives overruled dads and watched "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days"
All in all a good time was had by all...
Showing this weekend:
Starship Troopers - corny but a lot of action!
Resident Evil - love the scene in the corridor
Payback - watch out for your toes Mel!
Of course the wives will overrule us and we will probably end up with "Somewhere in Time".

Concerts are great on the big screen. Especially when they're shot on film and have a good surround track.
Az
Stop Making Sense is sooooo good.
Monday: pretty dry with no new Netflix dics (and we'd gone through last Tuesdays purchases) so we almost rewatched Ghost World (even put it in the player), but at the last minute changed our minds and rewatched Six-String Samurai. For those who haven't seen it yet it's a low budget indie post-apocalyptic road movie (picture "The Road Warrior" as a comedy and the Mel Gibson role being played by someone like Elvis Costello or Buddy Holly).
Yesterday: Bowling for Columbine.
Last weekend did the classic Young Frankenstein and Spiderman.
Nothing this weekend. Daughter is going to college and need to spend the weekend there getting her all moved in and connected.
For a treat, don't forget that Animal House is being released again on DVD :D It is called the Double Secret Probation Edition.
Monday: Paradise Hotel (wife like that kind of Fox fare)
Tues: Bowling for Columbine followed by a disastrous Red Sox loss to Oackland. I won't comment on BFCfor fear of attracting thread-deleting moderators .
Today (Wed) We are fixing to watch Chicago. As soon as Jackie feeds the baby.

Cool thread, but it could get very large. Maybe it will set the record of the largest longest lasting thread.
I saw the Life of David Gale. I didn't like it much, first because it was predictable and second because I didn't agree with the message it tried to convey.
Also saw Seven, again predictable and some of the worst acting I have seen from Brad Pitt (and I like Brad pitt movies). I have come to realize that I don't like Kevin Spacey movies very much. Maybe it is just him. I can't say that I like the roles he has played. I also saw him in American Beauty and I thought his role was a bone head and it was kind of good to see him killed. But anyway thats just me. I am not a Kevin Spacey fan.
I rewatched Private Ryan after I upgraded to a 7.1 system. The sense of realism increase substantially with this improved processor (B&K) and the addition of the two rear channels. I also acoustically treated the room so the finer details really came out.
I think I may rewatch Bram Stokers Dracula. As I remember the surround effects were real creepy and should also be enhanced with the changes to my room.
Also saw part of House of a 1000 corpses. I had to just put it away, it was that bac. My son had rented it and even he said it was pure trash. Bad things should happen to everyone in that movie. It was terrible. I guess I was expecting to see something like the Rocky Horro picture show. Rocky Horror this is not.
Also saw Destination 2. I saw the first one and the second one is very similar. Cool idea for a horror flick and maybe a 3rd will come out but this second was OK. Some likeable characters, some surprises but a real hokey ending. But you expect that from a movie like this. Maybe death will take a holiday in the next one.
Thats it for now.

It might!
I've been considering starting up a "Now Showing II" thread if this keeps up and let this one retire to the archives. Good/bad idea? Any reason just to let it grow?

I'd vote for keeping this one going to keep it all together. If we have a couple (or more) threads going on it and the old ones are bumped up and responded to it could get a little confusing.

Dropped the Son off at college, he's the first and is a freshman so in honor of him we (myself and the remaining two girls) watched the movies the son enjoyed in his younger days. Ernest scared stupid, Ernest goes to camp and Ernest goes to jail. These are classics and still just as silly and stupid to watch as when the kids were 8. Just a little reminiscing as the oldest has flown the coupe. Another goes in two years. Good thing I have the theater installed already because I wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise, college costs are just outrageous.

Saturday I watched Disney's Hercules with my 4 year old daughter. I don't think this movie received the good reviews it deserves. Maybe watching it with a 4 year old helps. There are a lot of great one-liners and James Woods is perfect as "Lord of the Underworld". The DVD transfer is excellent along with great surround sound.

I too watched Lord of the Rings : Two Towers. An excellent picture and good (not great) sound. Anyone who saw the first film will be quite pleased. On Sat. I made my girlfriend watch American Pie for the first time (she is easily offended) but she laughed throughout the whole movie. On Sunday I watched Buckaroo Banzai, a cult classic, fans of cheesier 80's movies will like it with it good special effects and silly story (I enjoyed it).

We had a rainy weekend here so went to the local video store and rented a stack of DVDs. This is what I've watched so far:
Sat - Two weeks notice - not bad for a chick flick, some funny moments, I enjoyed it.
Sun - The Bourne Identity - I liked this one, this was the second time I have seen it and still enjoyed it.
- S1m0ne - found this boring and predictable, although my wife enjoyed it, I left the room part way through.
Mon - Swim Fan - Pretty enjoyable, worth seeing, but not one I would buy.
Tonight - LOTR: The Two Towers - I can't wait for my son to go to bed so I can get this started...I have watched some of the special features and now I am hanging out for TTT:EE and ROTK....

Monday night: Amelie (a beaufiful film with a perfect transfer and excellent sound). I picked it up in FEB. and have probably watched it 15 times. Just a warning, it is in french w/subtitles and is very cute (my girlfriend loves it too!). Has anyone here seen the DVD version of the 1984 punk movie SUBURBIA? I was wondering if its quality was any good? I want to order it but its like $25 and I hate paying more than $3 at record exchange for a bad transfer on a good movie.
Cinneadthe2nd, the Suburbia transfer looks true to the film and is very watchable (looks about as good as it did in the theater). I think there might have been mpeg picture noise from the source grain, but I'm not home so I can't check. Sometimes you can get a deal on it (I got it for about $12.00 as Digitalaleyes.net, but they're sold out right now). There are some Amazon sellers who have used copies also. (Going a little OT, but related to Suburbia). T.S.O.L. just played in Sacramento a few months ago in a little midtown club. It was really good (and they didn't play any of the icky crossover stuff that they were doing for a few years). It sold out and Jack G. snuck in some of the people hanging out on the sidewalk through an open window (but later they got kicked out). At the end of the show I was beat (and feeling kind of old :D ), but seeing the "kids" who were to young to go the first time round get to experience a bit of what a real show is like (not that Blink 182 pop-punk radio friendly junk) was pretty neat.

Saturday: Cradle 2 the Grave. Ugghh... I like Jet Li, but this was kind of a mess.
Monday: What to do in Case of Fire? (original title "Was tun, wenn's brennt?", German, 2001)
Comedy/Drama about a group of former anarchists that reunite year later due to a forgotten bomb set to go of in the '80's in Berlin. That's about all I'll go into with the plot. I liked it.

Saturday was Daredevil (loved the visual and audio effects) and Bringing Down The House. I'm a sucker for Steve Martin movies - throw in Eugene Levy and I'm sore. :)
Sunday picked up Chicago, and Tuesday was the mandatory LOTR: Two Towers. Haven't watched either yet - probably tomorrow night for at least one of them.
Monday night I was blown away by Tears Of The Sun. I'm a war movie kind of guy anyways, but seeing the (in)human side of the rebel fighting and ethnic cleansing in Africa made it a powerful movie. Wifey was out and about - don't think she could have handled that one, so it was a good night for a "guy flick".
Last night was The Life Of David Gale. My wife picked that one out - I wasn't too into it when she grabbed it from the shelf, but it's quite the story. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how "Bitsey" figured out the ending. I saw it coming earlier on, but thought it to be too far fetched to be the case.
I'm bacheloring it again tonight - I think I'll pull the made-for-HBO "When Trumpet's Fade" from the shelf. I used to work directly with the guy that wrote that movie, and I read his original draft of the script back in '93 - so it's always interesting to watch that one.
Can you tell we have no kids and I've got a short hobby list besides HT? :)

Wednesday: Romper Stomper w/Russell Crowe. A very gripping and twisted portrayal of neo-nazi's in austrailia in the 1990's. Seems very realistic it was sick at times but movies can be. I have seen it before, and enjoy it w/good acting and excellent ambiance. Suggested purchase (or rental) but not for the easily offended.

Watched a few at sea, on the sonly plasma, but they are 8mm (the navy has yet to switch to dvd, at least in the sub force) but anything beats the boredom.

Thursday: About Schmidt- A sad, yet witty portrayal of an old man (Jack Nicholson) reaching his prime. Tonight, The Impostors (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0120823/)
Some really funny stuff, and one of the best over the credits closes.
We all watched it and it would make a great family film, but some stray language (too much, really) and some adult situations the film would have been better off without.
But if you liked "Big Night", you'll see lots of familiar faces. A great tribute to Laurel and Hardy and the Marx Brothers.

Monday (Labor Day), Jennifer, our youngest daughter, had a friend over to watch Spider-Man (http://imdb.com/title/tt0145487/combined)
And Diane and I finally got around to start watching Band of Brothers (http://imdb.com/title/tt0185906/combined) - absolutely amazing. And 9 more episodes to go!
I've never been much of a fan of HBO to watch movies - never anything on I want to watch and now that I've got the dedicated theater, I don't want to watch movies on TV (although I haven't tried HD yet). But HBO's original programming is amazing. Last night it was "The Terminator" special edition. I was all jazzed that it had a DTS track, but then I was totally disappointed by the sound. No LFE at all... The audio was poorly done, and it's a distraction from the movie. Unlike T2, this 'special edition' wasn't very special. :(

Wednesday: Animal House (DSP Ed)- a classic.
Thursday: Phone Booth-Yeah! I really liked this.

Sunday: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days- it was cute and better than I thought it would be.

Not much time for watching anything this weekend, but I found some Imax movies on DVD at a local bookstore in the cutout bin. $10 apiece!
I picked up Everest, Titanica, and Dream Alive. Dream Alive is about the space program, Everest was meant to be a doc about climbing but they were filming during the disasterous 1996 climb detailed in the book "Into Thin Air". Since I'm sort of an armchair climber I read the book several years ago and was very interested in seeing this movie! I only had a chance to watch about half of Everest and some of Dream Alive. (I had to test out the launch... beautiful!)
Content was excellent, as most Imax movies are, sound quality was above average, but the dadgum things are 4:3?! What's up with that?

Tuesday: I decided on a 80's night while watching by myself. First - BIG w/Tom Hanks, I always loved this very funny movie about a boy who wakes up as a 30 year old man. Second - GOONIES, an excellent flick produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Richard Donner. These are two of my favorite films and I hadnt seen them since I was a kid living w/parents on a old vhs w/a bad recording. Seeing them in surround sound on a good dvd player & TV combo reminded me of seeing them in the theater again. Maybe I too will pick up the high school reunion box set too!

I am so pissed off that the "High School Reunion" collection doesn't have much to offer. How hard is it to do a simple director's commentary audio track? John Hughes did one for "Ferris", why didn't they have him do them for this new release of "Sixteen Candles", "Breakfast Club", etc. These movies were already available on DVD before. It's all marketing and hype. I would have loved them with commentary.:(
Friday: Escape to Witch Mountain- I'd been waiting a long time for this to come out and it was great!
Saturday: Adaptation- I'm not sure yet if I liked it. Everyone in it was good and the story itself was interesting, but something about it just didn't "click" with me, I guess.
Sunday: Enemy at the Gates- undecided on this also. It had some issues I couldn't get past and the characters weren't always believable (to me, especially Ed Harris's) but the story itself (based on a true story) was interesting.

We had the same problem with Adaptation. I think it may have been the way it kept jumping around. It made it difficult to stay focused. It's hard to get drawn completely in.
But you're right, the acting was good and the story was interesting.

Thursday- T-2 (Extreme version) An excellent movie that while enjoyable to watch had me very frustrated. You see over a year ago (1yr warranty) I purchased a $849.00 DENON dvd-2800, its picture was near flawless and sound so crisp it just drew you in. BUT NOW ITS BROKEN. Only about 10% of brand new dvd's will play. Anyways T-2 played about half way and looked and sounded gorgeous, but then it stopped. So I put it in my Onkyo prog. scan 6 disc changer, and the difference in quality just was driving me nuts! Sorry for the rant. Anyone know any good (reputable) sites I could get it fixed and modded for a good price?
Wednesday - Atame! or (Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down) an Almodovar mess.
Thursday - The January Man - very quirky psuedo suspense thriller that also tries to be a comedy. It was written by the same guy who did Moonstruck. It was interesting but with Kevin Kline, Rod Steiger, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Susan Sarandon, Alan Rickman and Harvey Keitel - I thought it could have been much better.

Friday Night - The Transporter
Great car chase scenes
Movie was very predictable but enjoyable.
Saturday Night - Star Trek First Contact
I loved the 1st Warp Drive Spaceship Launch scenes especially the rock-n-roll. The Borg Queen made the movie for me...

Saturday - This is Spinal Tap - I finally watched my Criterion version of this movie and I was very disapointed. The quality is very poor and the frame kept moving to the left and right - very strange. Of course the film itself is the best comedy ever made.

Sat afternoon: Redsox vs CWS at Fenway
Sat night: DelaHoya vs Mosley II (what a load of crap, I want my $50 back)
Sun: Redsox vs CWS ( we are getting our asses handed to us by the white sox)

As for movies:
Wed: The Core. Good popcorn flick. Don't bring your brain into this or you will not be happy. There are 3 scenes in there that are worth the $16 for the DVD:
The shuttle crash scene is top notch. There is a scene where all the pidgeons in London go nuts and start to crash into everything. Just awesome. The also blow up Rome and the audio and video is pretty good, but it looked too much like a copy of the Empire State building scene from Independence Day.

The sound is 5.1 and does a great job of recreating the live experience.
Only downside: not widescreen.

Last week we watched our new Special Edition DVD, Sleeping Beauty. It's amazing to see how they cleaned up the original copy for this release (like they did with Snow White). Picture and sound is awesome. It's hard to believe this movie came out 43 years ago! There are two really good bonus shorts. The first is one called '4 artists paint one tree'. It's a short documentary about four of the artists that worked on this move who go out and paint the same tree. It's very interesting to hear their individual perspectives on how they view this tree. The other one is another short documentary about Peter Tchaikovsky that begins when he was a little boy. It's very informative and fasinating.

I thought Phone booth was good except for one irritating thing. The sniper would keep cycling his action on the rifle without taking a shot. He did this several times. It's Hollywood's way of showing the bad guy being"really pissed-off now!" cycle the action. They do it all the time.

I too was initially dissapointed with "This is Spinal Tap" quality. However, being that ranks over the Star Wars original trilogy as my all time favorite movie I gave it some leeway. Once you get wrapped up into the story you forget about the video noise. Remember, "There's a fine line between sexy and stupid"
Last night I watched "Best in Show" directed by Christopher guest, Nigel from Spinal Tap. This movie is about a dog show shot in the same mockumentary style as "Spinal Tap" Very funny and worth the rental. I have two more of his films on the way from Netflix and will report once viewed.
Tuesday night my wife and I watched "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days". It was actually not that bad and had some pretty funny moments.

I mean who would have thought that a relatively inexpensive system could look and sound this good.

Gus,
The Red Sox are in, and so are the Cubs. Could this be the Red Sox vs. Cubs. According to Joe Torres, his Yankees do not want to play the Red Sox again this year. To much hitting for his tired pitching staff. That may be a psychological advantage to the Red Sox. I'm looking forward to that match up for the AL, if it comes.
As for watching this past week. I thought the phone booth was very interesting. I am not a fan of Colin Farrel but that was a role made just for him. Now only if that could happen to him in real life. I thought Keifer Southerland was the true star in this movie. He has tremendous "animation" in his voice. I like the movie.
I changed the location of my BP 2000 L and R speakers to point the powered subwoofers to the inside instead of outside and put my Hsu Research TN-1220HO with 500 watt amplifier behind the couch. I wanted to get more punch and less boom. This change tightened up the bass without losing output, as I feared. It was great so I put in Das Boot and I almost drowned with all those depth charges. If you have tight bass with high output Das Boot is worth a relook. Even without it, it is a great movie for portraying submarine life during WWII.

On Friday I was able to get a small sneak peek at a movie that is being filmed in Atlanta. This movie will not be out in theaters until March 17, 2004. The movie is called "Stroke of Genius" and is about the legendary golfer Bobby Jones - the only golfer to with the Grand Slam back in the 1930's. The movie stars Jim Caviezel ("High Crimes," "The Count of Monte Cristo," and "Angel Eyes") and Claire Forlani (Mystery Men, Meet Joe Black, The Rock, Mallrats) and the Director is Rowdy Harrington (Road House). How did I get this peek you ask? My daughter was chosen to play Bobby's young daughter! She filmed 3 short sceens on Friday and it was so much fun. Even though it is a movie about a golfer it should appeal to a wide audience. Tom Crow, consulting producer for Stroke of Genius, promises that "audiences will cheer, laugh, cry, and applaud when they see this film. We are determined to create a film that balances old- fashioned storytelling with state-of-the-art filmography. The quality of this effort will be appropriate to the stature of the man whose story we will tell."

Randy, October Sky is one of my very favorite films. Don't know why, but I really connect with it. it's one of the few films (along with Field of Dreams and My Dog Skip) that leaves me in tears EVERY time I watch it. Call me sentimental. I think it's the music.
Tonight I watched "The Rookie" with Dennis Quaid. I was hoping it would be the same type of experience as watching October Sky or Field of Dreams. But not even close. An o.k. movie. Just not what I'd hoped and kind of flat. I'm glad I only borrowed it. I'm not sure why it got such a great reception. A disappointment since it could have been GREAT.
I cannot comment on the A/VQ. Saw it on my parents' low-res 27" t.v. using their Bose 3-2-1 system. Yikes. Actually, the Bose system doesn't really sound bad, per se. It just doesn't sound as good as it should for what it costs. It's a decent $400 system that costs $1000. I'm glad it's not mine. (BTW, my parents LOVE it--don't try telling them it's not great. Go figure.).

Friday night I watched "Bulletproof Monk". I was really disappointed. Not a whole lot of action, the humor was not there, and no really good fight sequences.
Saturday morning the whole family watched "Sleeping Beauty" again. I can't wait for for "The Lion King" and "Finding Nemo" so we have something new. Toddlers love watching the same thing over, and over, and over again.
Saturday night we watched "A Mighty Wind" by Christopher Guest. Again I was slightly disappointed. Compared to "Best in Show" and "This is Spinal Tap", the latter he didn't direct, it just didn't have the same dry humor. the funniest moments were with the "The Folksmen", brilliantly portrayed by the "Spinal Tap Guys".
After that we watched "2 Fast 2 Furious". My expectations were low so I wasn't expecting much. It was better then I thought and there was a lot of action.

Since the "Alias - Season One" DVD set was released just a couple weeks ago, my wife and I thought it was finally time to finally check out that TV show.
Well, as we expected, we are sooooooooo hooked on it. Every night after the kids are asleep, we slip down to the HT and watch more episodes well into the night. We have been very tired at work ever since.
I LOVE that though they were made for TV, they have 5.1 surround AND fill the ENTIRE 16:9 screen.
We did the same with "24" and "The Shield" (our favorite TV show).
We are now almost done with Alias' 1st season. It will be a long and painful wait until "Season Two" is released on DVD on December 2nd.
And don't even get me started about how HOT that Jennifer Garner is in every single scene!

You see, my wife is a devout Yankee fan ( She grew up in uptown Manhattan, just acrosss the river from Yankee Stadium.) I maintain that Little took a dive. No one is THAT DUMB. If you polled all 6 billion human beings on earth, you would find exactly TWO that would have let Pedro start the 8th (never mind try to finish it): George Steinbrenner and Grady Little. Only those two dispiccable persons would dare inflict such devastation on the entire eastern seaboard.

Tonight was chick flick compromise night, as I've been watching baseball almost every night for the past 3 weeks (but that all ended Thursday night. With the Marlins and Yanks on tap, I refuse to watch a single pitch of the WS). So anyway tonight we watched "Anna and the King" with Jodie Foster and Chow Yun Fat, which we found in the $9 bargain rack at Circuit City. I don't know if I should be embarassed to admit it, but I kind of (o.k...really) liked it, even if I thought it was a little overlong. And it was a very high quality disc (anamorphic, commentary, extras, extremely good video and audio). Maybe I liked it because I've never seen any version of "The King and I". But still, I'm glad we picked it up.
Gus-as a die hard and heartbroken Cubs fan who was also rooting for the Sox, I feel your pain. Starting Pedro in the 8th was bad management. Leaving him in after the two hits was absolutely criminal. Again, my tv will NOT be tuned to the WS.

My family flew in from California and Georgia for the week. We had a regular moviefest...
My favorite pick this week was the Italian Job. The scenes with the BMW Mini's were outrageous!
Mom loved the Tuxedo with Jackie Chan, she just kept chuckling to herself.
My brother loved Starship Troopers, he just couldn't get enough of those "bugs".
Nephew was enthralled with Monsters Inc, "even the fur moved".

Last night we enjoyed the first baseball-free night in a couple of weeks. We had some friends over and I popped in Matrix - Reloaded. It turned out to be a disaster. I was the only one interested in the movie. The kids were running around ( my 20-month-old and their pair of 21-month-old twins, a real tripple tornado). Markito,
Been into Alias since the beginning, so picking up Season 1 was a "guilty pleasure" that my wife snickered at, but I know she will be watching it soon.
I am not a TV series DVD purchaser, but this one with a combination of an excellent show, 5.1 sound and movie quality picture, I had to get it!
So far I have been checking out the extra materials - the parts on the pilot are great...

Perhaps I am just confused or something, but in case I just wasn't clear...
I wasn't saying that I wanted the "Fullscreen" version, I just meant that I wish its aspect ratio were 1.78:1, rather than 2.35:1, so that it would fill my 16:9 screen, but still show the whole frame...

Last night, in commemoration of my 37th birthday, my wife had the whole clan over for dinner. After dinner, the men retired to the HT while the women stayed upstairs playing bingo or something. We were watching Josh Beckett make history by thoroughly spanking The Yankees in their own house:D . As the exitement grew over the final innings, the ladies made their way downstairs. We wound up having an evenly divided house with 50% cheering for The Fish while the other half (mostly girls who day-dream about Derek Jeeter naked) cheered for The Yanks. Needless to say, Beckett avanged our death well by vanquishing The Yankees.
After The Game.
There were a few among the guests who had never seen a 10 foot wide screen in a house before. Among oohs, and aahs, we decided to play some action scenes.
As my guests cheered on, We watched:
1. The chase through downtown Chicago from Driven.
2. The firey crash scene from Driven
3. The Omaha Beach landing from SPR
4. Some attack scenes from Pearl Harbor
5. The first battle scene from Gladiator
6. Some HD from cable (College football, Texas wilderness scenes)
7. For the grand finali (sp) we watched Josh Beckett, er,I mean Kevin Costner spank The Yankees in a brilliant display of pitching excellence - For Love Of The Game.
It turned out to be a hell of a night. I still have quite the headache.

What is it about the Wal-Mart bargain bin that makes us spend $5-6 for a movie to own that we wouldn't even pay $2.50 to rent to watch once? Clunkers we've personally ended up with include the AWFUL "Bedazzled" and "In Love and War."
Friday - Matrix: Reloaded. Better than in the theatre, but all the self-important talking in circles and mumbo-jumbo still annoy me.
Saturday - Yanks lose (although I wish there was some way for them both to lose); Lion King with the new inexplicably controversial HT sound remix. I thought it sounded great, but I thought the video was slightly weaker than all the great reviews I've read.
Sunday - Stir of Echoes. A favorite of mine.

Wife insisted we watch "French Kiss" (with Meg Ryan & Kevin Kline), her favorite movie. Cute flick, lotsa laughs, anything to get her to watch movies in the home theater.

I'll be traveling to Europe(work) next week and have been mandated by The Wife to spends a few quality hours with the kids during this week. I was thinking maybe The Hulk and then some Looney Tunes. What do you think?

Alas, :( I have crawled out from under after the Yankees embarassment.
Gus, try some classics with the kids (depending on how old they are). I first showed Key Largo to my kids when they were about 10 and 12. Even in black and white they were captivated by the characters and the dialogue, and the suspense.
Keeping in that classics vane I showed the my kids (who are older now, 18 and 16 and 12) the Barefoot Contessa with Ava Gardener and Humphrey Bogart. Also watched Dark Victory with Bette Davis, a young Humphrey Bogart and Ronald Reagan. The kids got a kick out of the ex-president playing a drunken socialite. This halloween we are doing more classics with the thing from outerspace (the 50's original) Abbot and Costello meet the mummy and Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein. Now there's some good stuff with a lot of laughs.
David, The boy is 7 years old and the girl is 18 months, I don't think they'd be too much into classics ( I, on the other hand, would love to kick back with some of those). We just finished watching The Hulk. This will be one of my demo discs from now on! Just awesome. Too bad about the un-skippable commercials at the beginning though!
Gus
P.S.
I sympathize with you about The Yanks, I still haven't pulled the dagger that Grady Little planted firmly in my heart when he handed Game 7 to the Yanks, leaving my Redsox to languish in missery for the entire winter ( and possibly a couple dozen more winters).

My wife and I always wait for Halloween evening after all the trick or treaters are done and then enjoy a movie. However we decided to start a week earlier this year so we could watch all the Halloween movies we wanted. Last night was "Bram Stoker's Dracula" superbit version. I have not seen this movie since it was released (1992 I believe) and I enjoyed it much more this time around. Besides it being a horror movie, this movie was as much a love story. I found the acting to be excellent with a very good cast of actors.

Good friend lent me "Bend it Like Beckham".
Cute movie for the kids to enjoy. I liked hearing the English accent and their humour.

Don,
Good Movie, Bram Stokers Dracula. I liked the way they used the surround channels while you are in Draculas Castle. It was really eary hearing all the little sounds in the background and the mice running around. Everytime I watch this DVD I see and hear something different. The acting was tremendous but the acting by Gary Oldman as Dracula was absolutely superb. For me this put Gary Oldman as one of those unheralded actors who are superior to all others. I look for movies that he is in, he is so diverse. Watch him in The Professional, he was stunningly neurotic.

The kids wanted to watch "The Hulk".
I went in with no expectations and enjoyed the movie.
I liked the digital animation and am a fan of Jennifer Connelly.
The kids (and the big kid) thoroughly enjoyed the combat scenes!

I am a big Ashley Judd fan (yes I am collecting all of her movies) and watched Double Jeopardy yesterday. Forgot Tommy Lee Jones (another of my favorites) was in the movie.
Enjoyed the plot, heroine, action and suspense.
