andydumi 09-29-08, 04:45 PM Actually I just heard on WPLN that the fiber is actually for an expanded TDOT camera infrastructure. Here is the link. (http://wpln.org/newstranscripts/?p=3255)
So is UVerse coming or not? Given its apparent quality issues does anyone really care?
FIOS, where art thou?
-John
That may be. But the cable can be multi use.
I spoke with an ATT technician who was setting up a cabinet at the entrance to our neighborhood. Thats what he told me.
nashman2 09-29-08, 07:27 PM U-verse is offering some improvements over Comcast in their DVR which can be mulit-room and on screen guide. Maybe not in HD channels as of today.
Where Comcast has competition they seem to roll out improvements faster.

There is a link on the page showing the locations of all the AT&T boxes. It's a better map than in the paper.
andydumi 10-13-08, 10:44 AM It would be a nice XMas present to get this here.
Alan Lackey 10-18-08, 12:52 PM I do the QAM with limited cable and I get all the Nashville HD locals even WUXP 30 and WNAB 58 HD, I get the weather channel and all the music choice channels as well. The HD channel's are in the 80-117 range.
what channel are you getting WUXP30 HD in on limited cable?
nashman2 10-23-08, 01:16 PM Anyone heard when U-verse might be rolling out in Nashville?
For anyone looking at changing I've come accross a few good links.
https://uverse1.att.com/un/launchAMSS.do
Once you get into the site there are short videos explaining the services and features. Start with the "Explore" option. A typical channel guide is found if you look at the U-Guide monthly magazine option. Otherwise, I found it hard to find channel listings unless you have a workable zip code.
http://utalk.att.com/utalk/
This takes you to the at&t sponsored forum where there is useful info.
Some things I found out about U-verse in looking around.
The DVR sounds like an improvement over Comcast. You can view a recorded program on any TV hooked up to the service in your house. The down side is you need a box at each TV. The DVRs look to be smaller than Comcast's and the non DVR boxes are even a little smaller. You can record up to 4 things at once.
The number of HD channels is only a little more than Comcast, but there is supposed to be a big roll out of new channels in early Nov.
The Weather Channel doesn't provide 8 on the 8s like we currently have and no dedicated channel to local weather (ch. 101). That I would miss.
Your told to allow for 5-8 hours for installation depending on what they find at your house, and the services you are getting.
I would switch today for the Total Home DVR alone. Comcast stated this week they aren't planning a new I-guide to roll out until the second half of '09.
I have expected/hoped Comcast would add HD channels to try to offset the at&t advantage, maybe they will when time gets closer.
If anyone has more info on the U-verse roll out, please post it. Likewise any info on Comcast upgrading things would be welcome. This Nashville-Comcast thread hasn't seen much activity lately.
Lastly, this topic may need to be under a separate thread, if so let me know.

I have also been doing my research on U-Verse here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=14926905
Another feature of the DVR is that you can remove channels from the lineup Tivo style. No more scrolling through hundreds of Pay per view channels in the guide to get to where you are going.
Also, the on screen guide is actually widescreen. Screenshots here of some of the stuff:
http://www.satelliteguys.us/iptv-discussion-forum/87544-review-t-u-verse.html
This is one of the most torough reviews I have seen of U-Verse:
http://www.epinions.com/content_412665810564
ALl in all, especially with the COmcast prices going up, a lack of new HD channels and the guide being delayed a year, as soon as U-verse is here I am signing up. I anticipate it will be before Xmas, as they are pushing hard to sign people up before the holidays. And remember, with U-verse there is no contract, so you can change your mind and go to something else anytime.
As to the lack of local weather on the Weather channel theres this:
On the U-verse remote there’s a fairly conspicuous little yellow, triangular key bearing the letter "A". (This key is located directly below the cursor-control keys and somewhat to the left.) Pressing either this key or the "Go Interactive" key (above and to the right of the cursor-control keys) will modestly reduce the size of the "primary display" for your currently selected TV show; thus you can continue enjoying that program. But it simultaneously loads a so-called "U-bar" displaying information to the left and beneath the TV show displayed in the primary window.
The U-bar displays some of the same newsworthy information that you can view on your computer by logging on to your AT&T/Yahoo homepage and (if necessary) "personalizing" (customizing) that page via a little mouse clicking such that the following categories of continually updated information appear:
Weather;
Stocks;
Sports;
Once you "personalize" the respective settings for the above three categories, you can behold them anytime you like—right on your TV screen—via either of the aforementioned keys on your U-verse remote.
Additionally, the on-TV-screen U-bar displays a fourth category, "Traffic", which is continually updated to report significant traffic problems or delays in your city.
You can press the adjacent "EXIT" key to exit the U-bar and return to a normal, full-screen display of your currently selected TV program.
ChrisPC 10-25-08, 01:17 AM I love how the spokesperson in the article says Comcast "doesn't use boxes". They do if the cable is buried, like in most subdivisions.
BTW, has anyone seen the digital conversion PSA on WTVF 5? It's just a Comcast ad. In it, the weatherman says you will still have TV if you have cable, never mentioning OTA or satellite.
nashman2 10-25-08, 05:19 PM Just opened my newly increased Comcast bill. Gee whiz, U-verse can't be this much for the same services.
Also not even a note from Comcast. You'd think they would be doing something to react to U-verses coming. A flyer talking about upcoming HD channels?
If U-verse even does even minimal advertising Comcast will lose customers.
Also, I live in a condo, with buried utilities, and we do have boxes just for Comcast. Plastic boxes, but boxes. I saw at&t trucks at one of their main boxes in our complex this week. I can hope this is for U-verse...our units are wired for not only cable but with Cat5 too.

All they had was a new pamphlet from Comcast with our bill for last month. It gave various COmcast news, then spent a few pages on a channel lineup, and tucked away on the back cover were "New pricing guidelines" with all the old and new prices side by side. The font was tiny.

nashman2 10-29-08, 08:51 AM Came across a tv listings site titantv.com
Put in my zip code and one of the options for provider was at&t u-verse.
It showed the tv listings, local channels included.
For those interested in what may be coming...check it out.
what channel are you getting WUXP30 HD in on limited cable?
Alan, I am getting WUXP-HD on QAM, its on 85-2 here.
nashman2 11-06-08, 08:48 AM ice1138 - you seemed, earlier in the year, to have some inside knowledge on local Comcast plans. You posted in August that we could expect 8-10 new HD channels by years end. I know we still have 8 weeks left, but are we looking at getting anymore HD? soon?
I see in another thread that Comcast Chicago is up to 62 now.
nashman2 11-14-08, 08:08 AM I guess most have seen the message that we are getting Bloomberg Business channel Dec.1 and MLB on Dec. 16 (sports tier). What's curious is that MLB Network doesn't launch until Jan. 1 2009...
Well at least we are getting something.....if no new HDs.
U-verse please hurry up and roll out!
ice1138 11-14-08, 07:44 PM With the deletion of Mojo HD, The Versus/Golf Channel HD will be splitting into two separate full time channels as well.
nashman2 11-21-08, 06:50 AM I noticed a revised i-Guide this morning. Mainly in the look of Menu and On Demand areas. Better search feature.

I noticed the narrower layout in the menus as well. Better search? And do we have the clipping option yet? I am at work.

Yeah last night I noticed one of my shows ran over 1 minute that was set to record on my DVR and the next show had "clipped" to the right of it in the DVR scheduled recordings.
D* is phasing out MPEG-2 so my HD D*Tivos will be limited to OTA only in January (they say). I could replace them with non-Tivo DVRs, but I would prefer not to. I have another HD Tivo (stand alone) with a cable card hooked up to Comcast and limited basic ($12.15 per month) and use it to record the locals in HD. I also have a cable modem ($42.95 a month, I think).
I am looking for ESPN in HD and some of the other HD channels like Discovery, AMC, etc - no premiums. It looks like NFL in HD would require at least the $5 sports pack + the HD pack + some digital pack?
It looks like HD is $6.95 extra and includes an HD cable box and the price is the same without the box (I guess). The fine print says "Basic service subscription is required to receive HDTV" - so that could mean what I have now, but I don't think so - unless they sell that as an option to folks that just want the locals in HD and need a box.
So it looks like "digital starter" for $55.75 per month or $29.99 per month on a promo for 6 months PLUS the HDTV fee in order to get the channels in the digital package in HD?
Or maybe they would let me do the digital double play: cable modem and digital cable (I assume starter level?) for $66/mo for 12 months + the $6.95 HD fee.
I have called and get different answers each time I call  .
Hopefully someone here has been through this and knows the real scoop.
Thanks,
Dennis

at this point - why not look into their triple-play package?
outbackvandy 11-22-08, 03:18 PM I live in Nashville (Nipper's corner area). The HD channels for limited basic cable service I get are:
ABC 1-2
NBC 1-4
CBS 1-5
FOX 1-6
PBS(NPT) 115-8
MYTV 85-14
CW 85-18
A few HD channels were in the 90s, and moved to channel 1 a while ago. Fox was on 1-1 before and moved to 1-6.
Are there other HD channels available for limited basic service?
When will ATT u-Verse come to Nashville?
at this point - why not look into their triple-play package?
I already have VoIP at a much cheaper rate and more features. I am just trying to figure out how to get more HD channels for the cheapest from Comcast :) .
Dennis

Your list looks right. There are more SD digital channels you can get and some analog channels, but that should be it for HD. We used to get INHD1 and INHD2 for "free" then they dropped 2 and renamed 1 to MOJO. A few months ago they started scrambling MOJO along with the OnDemand stuff your neighbors were watching.
I don't know when ATT might roll out where you live, but feel sure they will not offer more channels for $12 than what you get right now :D .
Dennis
NashGuy 11-22-08, 04:38 PM I had been looking forward to AT&T U-verse arriving but, after checking it out, it's not really much cheaper than Comcast. Until a couple months ago, I had just been getting basic cable from Comcast and using a clear QAM tuner to pull in the local HDs plus a few extras (MOJO, WGN, Weather, C-SPAN). Now I'm with Dish Network's "Turbo HD" package. I get a decent selection of about 25 channels, all in HD, for $25 a month, and add locals for another $5, DVR for $5 more. If you're looking for HD channels and don't care about getting a large selection of SD channels, and you want something that's not as expensive as Comcast or AT&T, it's a good option. (Plus you can get a year of the Cinemax HD channels for 1 cent if you do auto-pay.)
Ooutback,
when you say you have limited basic whick package are you refering too. I plan on getting a HD tv at the end of the week and currently have limited basic. (pretty much local channels 12.00 dollars a month. Are you saying i will be able to get locals in HD under this current cheepo package.

Be sure to get a new HDTV with a QAM tuner and you should be set. You get the locals in HD, some SD digital channels, the analog limited basic channels, and some music channels all for the limited basic price of $12.xx per month plus taxes and fees. You may have to do / re-do some house wiring and replace older cables, splitters, or amps to get all the HD channels to your new set. It all just depends on the signal level entering your house and what is between your set and the entry point.
Dennis
Not really a technical problem, but why does WSMV insist on "time-delaying" The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, when channel 5 WTVF is showing it live they bump it back a half-an-hour, really annoying,IMHO.
nashman2 12-02-08, 06:46 PM Per Comcast's announcement, Bloomberg channel 104 started Monday. Unable to get a constant picture, I called and was told Bloomberg wouldn't be fully ready until Dec. 14. No great loss, but why put it on if it's not ready?
Also with MOJO 206 gone it will likely be Dec 8th before Verses/Golf HD will split into 2 seperate channels. Verses HD will be 206, according to other Comcast posts.
ice1138 12-04-08, 10:34 AM Bloomberg is fully running. If you are having problems with it, you will need a troublecall to resolve the issue. It is probably an ingress issue that a technician will need to address.

andydumi 12-07-08, 09:28 AM Here is a job posting for here in Nashville, or at least the important part.
Come join one of the fastest growing marketing companies in business today. XXXXXX, an authorized representative for the new AT&T, we have opened a BRAND NEW office that needs to be fully staffed! We have several positions available including:
· SALES REPRESENTATIVES FOR AT&T’S UVERSE
....
They say they need to fill it up within 1 week so they can start work.
I was hoping to get Uverse before Xmas, but it looks like it may be here right after the new year or so.
In any case, the time has come.
nashman2 12-08-08, 07:29 PM Well now we're back to 40 HD channels. (after MOJO's departure) I'd had some hope Comcast might throw us at least 2 or 3 more HD channels as a Christmas present....
Well I'm glad U-verse is hiring, they will need them to handle the HDTV owners tired of Comcast's 40 HD channels, and looking toward the 75+ (85 as of 12/11/08) HD channels U-verse offers.
Be sure to get a new HDTV with a QAM tuner and you should be set. I have Full Basic Cable now with Comcast. We are getting a new 52" 1080P Sharp LCD HDTV for Christmas with all 3 tuners. Do I have to go get an HD set-top box in order to see the HD channels on Comcast? They just told me I have to upgrade to digital which is the same price, and then pay $6.95 each month for the HD box. Each additional box is $6.95. That could really add up! Fortunately we are just getting one HDTV. I guess you have to get the Comcast HD box and use an HDMI cable to get high definition?

Does your new TV have a cable card slot or just a QAM tuner? Without a cable card slot you will only be able to tune in the locals in HD - the other HD channels are all scrambled. Those of us on limited basic ($12.xx per month) get these as well, but that is all we get even with a cable box. You get a lot more channels with full basic and a lot of them are in HD, so you either have to have a cable card (if your set has a slot), an HD cable box, or preferably a cable DVR in order to get these channels in HD (some of the SD channels may not come in clear QAM either).
You can use component out from the cable box / DVR or HDMI - either should be fine, but the image from HDMI has the potential to look better. Buy your cable(s) online at some place like monoprice and get the cables cheap - don't pay $50-100 for one cable at the local big box stores.
The Comcast DVR is no Tivo, but if I were having to pay $6.95 for an HD box I think I would go ahead and pay the extra $9 a month and get the HD DVR. The freedom of NOT having to be in front of the TV to watch something in HD is well worth the money to me.

Wow, what a fast and thorough reply! Thanks so very much!
No I don't have a cable card. I got a real good buy on our tv from Circuit City so I'm not complaining. I just need to change over to digital with Comcast and pick up a set-top box, and yes you might be right about DVR. I can skip the commercials I think. And when my son is playing xbox, maybe it will record a movie or program for me to watch when he goes to bed. I bought two HDMI cables at Costco but plan to return them. They are on sale right now for $40 a pair, but they are way too long for me, 20 ft each. I read on here to order from Monoprice so I plan to do that. Also got a good price on a Panasonic blue ray player at Costco and it comes with it's own hdmi cable. My son has his xbox-360 hooked up now with component cable so I'm wondering if I should order an HDMI cable for it? Is there anything else I should order from Monoprice when I order the HDMI cable for the tv? If the set-top box is above the 52" tv, then I'm thinking about a 6' ft cable. Maybe I should open up this huge box first or find a picture of the back of a LC-52SB55U.
You have to check to see if the xbox takes a standard HDMI or needs a special cable (custom connector on one in). Also, some sets can't do higher rez (1080p) via component while others can - some can accept it but the picture is noticeably inferior to the HDMI connection. If the xbox just uses an normal HDMI cable then buy an extra for that, get one for the BD player (are you sure it comes with one) and one for the Comcat DVR / HD box. With a quality cable you can go quite long with the cable length without problems and I have yet to find a cable stretcher that works properly - so get your cables long enough to start.
You could also TRY to get Comcast to let you do one of the "digital starter" or other promo deals. They are supposed to be for new customers only, but perhaps asking them would net the promo for you. You could say something like "Dish network has this TurboHD for $25 per month and I am thinking of switching to them. I think I would prefer to stay with Comcast, but having to pay you $xx per month plus DVR fee is a lot higher. I notice you have ads for these starter deals for the first 6 months or 12 months - can I get in on one of those deals so I don't have to switch to Dish to get a bargain?". You can look at the promo plans online at Comcast.com and notice the "for new customers" price is LOT cheaper than what you will have to pay - and some of them are good for a full 12 months. You want to get them to let you in on that deal. Seriously, if you dropped Comcast and came back in a couple of months they would let you have the cheap deal - so why not let you have it now to keep you as customer?

ice1138 12-15-08, 08:20 PM I'm looking for a little feedback on the TVGuide On Screen (TVGOS). Can I get some confirmation from anyone with a TV or DVR that utilizes TVGOS that it is in fact pulling data? If you could please post a confirmation (or if its not working) along with the area of town that you live in. Thanks.

nashman2 12-15-08, 08:44 PM Bellevue here - I have the HD DVR and the guide is working fine. I looked out until 12/25 and there was info. including descriptions.
ice1138 12-16-08, 12:58 AM Thanks for the quick reply, nashman. I probably should have been a little clearer on what I was looking for. I'm looking for information regarding non-comcast equipment. (ie Tvs with built in guide, non Comcast and non-Tivo DVRs, etc). The data from TVGOS is currently being fed on channel 8 (PBS). I know we have a few people out there that use TVGOS tvs.
nashman2 12-16-08, 08:42 AM My TV has that guide also, though I never use it. It had no information when I checked this morning. Since I rarely look at it, I don't know if that's my issue (my settings) or Comcast's. FYI - My TV has 2 feeds, one directly from the wall and one thru the Comcast dvr.
nashman2 12-16-08, 09:04 AM Boston's Comcast HD line up as of today per another thread... well over 80 HD channels.
I bet we pay a similar amount for our HD package. It's like going into McDonalds in Boston and getting a Quarter Pounder and going in McDonalds here and getting 1/2 a hamburger for the same price and being told to be happy about it.

I see that MLB Network has started up on ch. 279.
Dwynne, I did what you said mentioning Dish Network for $25 when I called Comcast, and she signed me up for the bundle for internet and digital cable with HD for $66 for six months and a free DVR for 12 months. So thanks!
By the way, if you buy an HDTV from Circuit City and you are a new digital/hdtv customer, they can order you an hdtv upgrade which does nothing but give you some pieces of paper and a "provider confirmation #". Then when you call the number for Comcast on the instructions, she types in the number which validates that you did the upgrade. After I mail in the rebate form and receipts, I'm suppose to get $100 back. If you are already a digital customer, but upgrade to hdtv you are suppose to get $50 back. You can find this info on myrebates.com

Good deal, just watch the price after the promo is over and drop/change to get rid of anything you don't need or want.

When are we going to get G4TV HD? or ToonHD?
nashman2 12-19-08, 06:03 PM G4 is more likely before Toon HD because somehow Comcast seems to have an business interest in it.
I really hoped, as I stated in previous posts, that Comcast would add even a few new channels before years end. It doesn't look like it.
Since Comcast has been adding between 3-30+ in some markets, I would guess we are maxed out until they shift more analogues into the digital tier.
I want to urge anyone wanting more HD to email Comcast to ask/beg/plead for more. I do so every other month or so. My last response said one reason they aren't adding more is -
"-the relatively low number of subscribers (currently only a small
minority of customers have high definition compatible television sets)"
I don't totally agree with that statement, but I don't work for Comcast. If you don't make your voice heard they have no reason to add anything.
I want to add that I have nothing against Comcast employees, I have always had great customers service experiences, one on one. I can't move to Direct/Dish because of my location. I don't like ragging on Comcast :( But i do believe in stirring the pot.
With U-verse coming in the first quarter of next year (I hope) I had thought Comcast might try to compete, but I'm guessing they aren't too concerned, with the lack of HD additions.
I know a local Comcast employee or two reads this thread. Any comments? Please prove me uninformed.
tommyc_295 12-20-08, 10:20 AM Hey guys, I did a quick search but wanted more answers. I live in Nashville, TN area and currently have Comcast but U-verse just became available for us here. I did a little reading about U-verse and like what I read so far. Is there anyone that has switched from Comcast to U-verse? Are you happy with your choice? What are your likes and dislikes compared to what you had with Comcast? I really considering getting it after the holidays are over. I watch mostly HD material and it is mostly network TV and sports (college, NFL, and MLB). I would love to have my DirecTv back but where I live, I can't put a dish up.
Thanks,
Tommy

I considered signing up for U-Verse when I was in Frisco, TX. The main thing that stopped we was the limit on HD streams. At that time you could have 1 HD stream, and 4 SD. I have 7 TV is the house, and 4 of them are connected to HD service.
Current limits in most markets are 2HD and 2SD streams.
Pros - price is very good; Multi-room DVR.
Cons - Bandwidth limit; PQ is slightly softer by many accuounts - this may vary by market, and is not a deal breaker for most viewers.
Some have reported success with asking Comcast to meet comp.
I had TWC in Texas, and I have Comcast now. It's not the cheapest, but I think that the balance of HDTV/HSI/Phone is a good value. Just don't be afraid to negotiate price. Also - if the Comcast quality is not up to snuff in your market, make them fix it, or switch. I am in a new area with excellent infrastructure. YMMV

Is Verizon planning to expand Fios beyond areas of the USA that they offer landlines in? As far as I know, we will never get Fios here.

This is true. They wont come anytime soon from what I understand. And by that i mean a couple of good years.
ATT will do in the meantime. And if ATT deploys their new technology ( I dont know the tech details, its int he Uverse thread) like they are supposed to in 09, the number of streams is supposed to go up to about 6-10HD plus a dozen or more SD at once. Thats more than I will ever need in the immediate future.

You probably mean the bonded VDSL2 tech. Unfortunately they seem to still be having issues with that, so I wouldn't expect it to be widely deployed until 2010 at the earliest:

Trek7300 12-21-08, 09:52 PM Ooutback,
when you say you have limited basic whick package are you refering too. I plan on getting a HD tv at the end of the week and currently have limited basic. (pretty much local channels 12.00 dollars a month. Are you saying i will be able to get locals in HD under this current cheepo package.
I think that the law states that for any of the local over-the-air channels in your area that broadcast in HD - the cable company has to pass that HD channel un-encrypted. In other words, with a QAM tuner, you should be able to get it without having the cable company's box.

Thanks for the link to that article. Interesting . . .
Stange thing though, I see that they have Smyrna, Lavergne, Franklin, etc. listed in the list of cities -- but no Murfreesboro. This has to be a mistake. They do list Rutherford county, however.
I'm going to try out U-verse at the first of the year. If anyone else does before then, please post your thoughts.

It might be worth your while to try them in any case. If things don't work out stay long enough to be a "new" customer at Comcast at take advantage of the 6 or 12 month promos on digital cable. How that works depends on what level of service you have - cable modem, digital cable, etc. As we mentioned earlier, you may be able to get the discounted "new customer" deals by just calling Comcast and asking for them (and mentioning you are thinking of moving to U-verse). If they don't give you a deal, the go try U-verse. If they do, enjoy the savings and go try U-verse once the savings period runs out.

Anyone else here having trouble getting TVGOS data through Comcast? My parents live in nashville and have a Pioneer DVD/HD recorder and their guide shows "no listing" for every channel and none of their devices can auto-set the time. Did PBS or Comcast maybe kill the TVGOS signal due to the the digital transition coming up?
If its now being broadcast on CBS as I've heard it is or will be, is there anything that can be done to get guide data back? Would using the G-link cable and a CECB like the DTVPal with an OTA antenna help? I know the Pal cant tune cable signals but perhaps it could be used solely to get the guide data via the G-link while the RF-in still is connected to the signal from Comcast?
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.
ice1138 12-23-08, 09:54 AM The TVGOS data is back up and running.
It still isnt back up for me. I did a hard reset of the Pioneer last night, waited til today, and the guide still says "no listing" for all the channels. I called Comcast today and they had no clue what I was talking about and said everything shoulod be working fine...so no help there.
I called PBS and got their engineer's voicemail, left a message but he hasnt called me back. Keeping my fingers crossed.

What area of town do you live in? I believe the Fairview/Dickson area is having a problem at the moment.
The TVGOS data has recently been moved to a new digital carrier (input) and then added to the channel 8 (PBS) stream. I am currently testing to verify that the signal is up and working. Any information you can provide is valuable to the testing process. Thanks.

My mom and dad are in the south nashville/antioch area. Like I said we did a hard reset of the Pioneer (I think its a 510 or 530 HS) and it cleared everything out, then we waited overnight, and when it came back up it had all the channels but "no listing" for each channel.
The guide is back up! If anyone here had anything to do with it, thank you.
outbackvandy 12-30-08, 09:27 PM I have PBS/WNPT HD signal switched between 1-8 and 115-8 constantly.
Do you guys have the problem?
I have limited basic cable and PBS was on 1-8 reliably for a long time. It's not working as well any more...
I have always tuned it on 115 - that is where it was back when I scanned for channels. Last time I looked, it was still there.
Dennis
outbackvandy 12-30-08, 10:19 PM yeah, my PBS stays on 115-8 most of time. but it occasionally will show no signal, then I manually enter 1-8 it will show a few seconds normal HD signal and then disappears, then I go to 115-8, it shows up again...
I live in brentwood area and my friend also have this problem.

Not sure about this one. Will look into it. I believe in the near future that the ATSC channels will be moved next to their SD counterparts. (ie HD channel 2 will be at 2.1, and HD channel 4 will be at 4.1, etc) This will ensure that the HD version is Adjacent to its SD version. This should not affect people who tune to 115.8 (QAM Tuner) only people who use the ATSC tuner.
well darn...the guide is down again, and if it's PBS/NPT related, it wont get fixed until at least Monday. I get "no listing" for all the channels. It was working for about two days and then Tuesday it cut out.
Jer2006 01-03-09, 09:26 PM Has channel 241 been down for anyone else? Tuned in on my non HD tv and get a blank screen. On my HDTV the screen freezes as it tries to switch to the channel. I guess it has to do w/the problems posted earlier about ch 8.
[QUOTE=Jer2006;15451688]Has channel 241 been down for anyone else? /QUOTE]
241 = WNPT 2 (digital, not HDTV)
On clear QAM tuners I get the black screen but usually audio. Sometimes just the black screen, then if I tuner off and back on the channel I can get audio. I usually don't get 8-2 OTA because the signal is too weak - I am waiting for them to move back to 8 at full power next month.

now an update on this issue.
before 1/4/09: PBS on 115.8, occasionally on 1.8 for a few seconds before switching back.
1/4/09: PBS on 115.8 CBS on 1.5
1/5/09: PBS on 1.8 CBS disappaeared
1/6/09: PBS on 1.8 CBS on 1.5 reappeared
Now the lineup is perfect, hope COMCAST don't change it any more...
BTW, you guys talks about TV guide thingy, how do u receive it? I have HDTV from Panasonic, never saw that thing on my tv.

The Major and Minor channels will change on Tuesday (1/13/2009). The major channel will move so that it is adjacent to its SD counterpart. CBS HD will be 5.1, ABC will be 2.1, etc...

Dave516 01-11-09, 07:34 PM Hello all,
Just got the limited basic cable installed today (I live in Brentwood, TN), my HDTV has the QAM tuner, but so far the only HD channels I've been able to get are 92.5: CBS HD, and 93.4: NBC HD. Does anyone know if this HD channel list is still current?
85.6: The CW HD (channel 58)
85.14: My Network TV HD (channel 30)
86.11: Nashville Weather Channel (WKRN's 2nd digital channel... all weather all the time)
86.14: NPT2 (WNPT's 2nd digital channel... all documentaries all the time)
87.1: INHD (HD demo channel)
92.2: ABC HD (channel 2)
92.5: CBS HD (channel 5)
93.4: NBC HD (channel 4)
93.6: Fox HD (channel 7)
95.2: ABC again(?)
95.5: CBS HD again(?)
115.8: PBS HD (channel 8)
116.5-116.50: Music Choice audio-only channels
Besides CBS and NBC, the other HD channels come in as SD for me. Anyone else in Nashville having this problem? Thanks in advance!
Hello all,

The channel assignments could be different for Brentwood than they are here. You are on Comcast, right?
The last time I scanned most of the locals in HD now appear down at 1.?? and no longer at 92.? and 93.? . There are several SD digital channels you can get as well, including copies of the locals. I will have to look to see what the QAM channel is on these, but it is 82.?? IIRC .
Many of the HD channels are on the cable at really high frequencies and many of us found that when we got QAM tuners that we had splitters and/or coax that could not pass these frequencies properly. Make sure all your coax is RG-6 or RG-6QS and that your splitters are rated to 2ghz. If you need an amp, I highly recommend this Motorola "signal booster". http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-484095-001-00-Signal-Booster/dp/B000066E6Y
If you think it is a signal level problem, what I always recommend is getting a roll of coax and bypassing everything else. Get a double female coupler and run the new (RG-6) coax from the entry point straight to the set. If the channels now all come in, then you have splitters and/or cable that is dropping the signal. You can try the booster and that entry point to see if that fixes it, but you may end up needing to replace some stuff to get the channels in properly.
Dennis
Dave516 01-12-09, 10:25 AM Thanks for the quick reply!
Yes, I am on Comcast. I have the cable going right from the wall directly to my TV - no splitters or anything, and the coax is the one the Comcast installer put in.
I actually did eventually get all the HD channels in the 90's range last night, but this morning it's only NBC. Could it be that only certain show broadcast in HD? That's the only thing I can think of.
I tried the 1.?? channels, but didn't get a signal. I read an earlier post by a guy saying that starting tomorrow, all HD comcast channels would be at 2.1, 4.1, 5.1, etc like it would be if you used an antenna. Is this true?
Holy Crown Victoria! While watching Rush Hour 3 on MAXHD the 3808 lit up the 'surround back' speaker! I've never seen any broadcast send anything greater/higher than 5.1! I have a 7.1 set up and the BD for Rush Hour 3 is 7.1DTS-MA. I'm psyched to see broadcast movies in something 'higher' than 5.1 (I just wonder why it didn't get through as 7.1).

It could be all the stuff IN the walls. From where the signal enters the house / apartment to the wall plate.
The locals do not broadcast everything in HD, but the channels should remain the same no matter if they are showing SD or HD programming. If you have a black screen or freezes or pixelization on the channels that are the right ones, then you probably have a weak signal.
Are you saying during prime time you got all the locals in HD, but this morning you only got NBC in HD or only got NBC and the other channels had black screens? The former is "normal" and varies through out the day, the latter is a signal problem.
The QAM channel number has no relationship to the frequency on the cable, or it may not. So you can't tune up 1.2 or something you have to scan for it. When it finds a signal it also gets the channel "number" which may be 1.2 or 92.2 or whatever. Some folks in the thread report that on their sets it moves around from 1.? to something else. On my Sony 32" in the bedroom the locals still come in on the same QAM channels as always (the ones you listed) but I never re-scan for channels. On a newer set, a scan showed most of the locals on 1.?? . Same house and I am sure same frequencies, just different number when doing the scan. Analog cable channel 2 is the same frequency everywhere. QAM 1.2 is not.
Once your set learns the frequency to tune the locals, then like my Sony it should not need to re-scan to find them again. If the channel works, then does not, then works you probably have a weak signal.
Dennis
Dave516 01-13-09, 10:39 AM The locals do not broadcast everything in HD, but the channels should remain the same no matter if they are showing SD or HD programming.
Gotcha, this is what I was wondering. Some shows are in SD (with black bars on either side of the screen), and some shows are in HD. I mistakenly thought the SD programming meant the channel itself was SD. I never had an issue with black screens on any of the channels. The channels that I picked up on my first scan are the same that I get now, so it's not a signal issue. Just a misunderstanding on my part.
Thanks for the info!
CaboWabo 01-14-09, 12:14 AM Does anyone know if Comcast has plans to move CW HD to 18-1 rather than 85-18 and My30 to 14-1 rather than 85-14. That would make more sense like all the other local HD channel locations now.
Are broadcast going to be 16:9 after the transition?
and does anyone here have Comcast? are you satisfied with the IQ
does anyone here have a Vizio 37" 1080P?

I have a question, how come Comcast only has the three east feeds and none of the subchannels/west feeds for the premium movie channels in HD?
CaboWabo 01-14-09, 05:10 PM does anyone here have a Vizio 37" 1080P?
I have a 32" Vizio full 1080p that I just got at Costco for about $549. Model number VO32LF. Its pretty much the same at the 37" version that they also sell. I really like it and the price was the best I could find for a 32" full 1080p.

I noticed that over the past few days History HD (I think) has had appalling amounts of pixelation and noise. It is sort of in that same range of channels -- related issue?

yeah, i called them last night since it was still not working. they couldnt fix it on the phone. so they scheduled for a tech to come saturday. i told the lady tha ti am getting tired of calling them. i have had to call them 4 times in 11 days of having service. and i said the next time i call, it will be to cancel. anyway, about 2 hours later....... the channells were working. so who knows?!
Fingolfin269 01-22-09, 01:01 PM Please forgive my ignorance but I need to ask some simple questions. And who better to ask than other Comcast users in the Nashville area?
I currently have the full blown HD package but have come to the conclusion that it is overkill since all I really want in HD are the locals and ESPN/ESPN2. However, I am no longer willing to pay such a ridiculous amount for 2 channels.
What is the lowest package I can shoot for while also receiving the QAM HD channels you guys are referring to? Also, if I have an older HD set (w/ tuner built in) that does not have a QAM tuner can I purchase a tuner separately? No big deal if not as it's about time for a new one anyway.
Any advice would be appreciated here.
(BTW, I'm in Murfreesboro if that makes a difference)

I currently have the full blown HD package but have come to the conclusion that it is overkill since all I really want in HD are the locals and ESPN/ESPN2. However, I am no longer willing to pay such a ridiculous amount for 2 channels.
What is the lowest package I can shoot for while also receiving the QAM HD channels you guys are referring to? Also, if I have an older HD set (w/ tuner built in) that does not have a QAM tuner can I purchase a tuner separately? No big deal if not as it's about time for a new one anyway.
(BTW, I'm in Murfreesboro if that makes a difference)
If you're looking to see ESPNHD on a QAM that won't happen - the only way is through their HD box.

Yeah sorry man I really screwed up explaining what I want. What's the cheapest I can pay and get full benefit of only the QAM channels? If something is on ESPN or ESPN2 and it is a must see I'll just head to a bar or a friends place. The incremental cost required to get just those two channels is no longer worth it to me. OTA is tough in the Boro so QAM is really my best bet for local HD.

Ah - then all you need is just 'basic' cable. string the line to your TV/QAM and you'll be good to go.

Yep. The 12 bucks a month basic locals is enough.
Anyone else noticing the sound dropping out on NBC HD lately? I'm getting clicks, momentary dropouts, then total silence until I pause and then play, or change channels then come back. This is with a 3416 STB connected by HDMI. It only happens on WSMV HD. All others seem fine.
MikeKlim 01-24-09, 09:43 AM Funny you should mention this. I don't have Comcast (I have D*), but I've noticed lately a lot of "pops" on NBC's HD channel recently. I hear them consistently about every 20 seconds or so. No dropouts or total silence, just snap, crackle, and pop every few 20 seconds or so.
I posted about this in the OTA thread to see if anyone was noticing via that reception. So while I'm not experiencing exactly what you describe, I too am experiencing sound issues. So something must be going on.
Trek7300 01-24-09, 12:37 PM Here is a job posting for here in Nashville, or at least the important part.
They say they need to fill it up within 1 week so they can start work.
I was hoping to get Uverse before Xmas, but it looks like it may be here right after the new year or so.
In any case, the time has come.
Hello everyone: I live in Murfreesboro in the Cason Lane / Riverrock Area. (Just west of I-24, south of Highway 96-Franklin Road, north of Highway 99-Salem Road)
Yesterday in the mail I got a flyer from AT&T advertising Uverse service. So, I just went to their website and put in my address. It says that the service is available! I does say that the voice service is not yet available, but since I'm using Vonage, that wouldn't be a problem. I may give it a try, but I don't want to be the first guinea pig. BTW, I currently have Comcast for Internet and Extended Cable. I don't have any HD packages or any premium channels.
Robert
andydumi 01-24-09, 12:44 PM Cool.
check uverseusers.com for other Nashville impressinons.
It seems Merfreesboro area is their first Nashville push.
ColonelCash 01-25-09, 06:18 PM I've got Limited Basic + HD and I just realized that Ch. 247 is some type of Sports & Entertainment channel. Also, I see Ch. 251 as CNN-HD that is listed as 'available shortly'. Anyone know if that might be added to the Limited Basic package? There is also a Sci-Fi channel that is maybe 252? Anything added to Limited Basic HD is a plus in my book.

We have digital basic and HD.
247 is sports events and it only airs when they have content from what I noticed, like a particular game or something along those lines. Nothing on right now.
251 is indeed CNN HD and it works already.
252 is Fox News HD and it works already.
253 is Sci Fi HD and it works already.
I just checked just now. None of them are new to us.

anyone notice that House on HD wasn't broadcast in HD?
papercy 01-26-09, 05:31 PM I live in Franklin and noticed that the electric company finally installed an electric meter in the VRAD that was installed about a month and a half ago. Hopefully, Uverse will be coming here shortly. Interested to see what they offer.
Meanwhile, has anyone else been getting The Weather Channel on station 903? I first noticed it about a week before CNNHD et al were addded. I thought at first that it was coming in HD as welll but since then I have not noticed the channel being in HD. The weird thing is that it is coming in on one box, but not the other.
Anyone have a 7.1 surround set up and notice that when watching a station in dolby digital i have my receiver set to Dolby + PLII Cinema but some stations (ESPNHD for example) produce a low (barely audible) squeal on the side surrounds while producing sounds to the back surrounds while other stations (HBOHD) sends sound to all 7 speakers?

I got my question answered by Comcast:
"You are 100% correct. Programming is sent video and audio wise differently from each provider, including HD. This can also vary from program to program as well as Channel to Channel. Everything is moving so fast that programmers currently have very little consistency in the audio versions that they are sending out. "
CaboWabo 02-03-09, 09:06 PM FYI
If anyone didnt know you can watch the Nashville Predators game right now in HD on Comcast with a direct connection without a cablebox on Channel 115-2. Of course your tv has to have a QAM tuner. If you have the cablebox its the same on ch 247. Sure beats watching the hockey games only in standard def on Ch 28.
Avatar28 02-03-09, 11:14 PM Does anybody know if Comcast is still recompressing hd channels into lower bandwidth?
andydumi 02-04-09, 09:25 PM What do you mean still, they never will stop. If anything it may get worse. Since they stopped transmitting networks untouched and they moved to a 3 in 2 for their QAMs, they quality is in the toilet.
Trek7300 02-06-09, 08:51 PM I have Comcast - regular - not digital. For the last 2 days the audio on most channels has been horrible. It sounds like little birds chirping - a wierd sounding interference. Also, my wife said that during the day today, many of the channels were all messed up and blocky looking.
Anyone else notice this?
Robert
PS - I live in Murfreesboro
wineman 02-07-09, 12:20 AM My speculation is that many areas in Nashville are about to go live with DOCSIS 3.0 with the extended HD channel selection. I noticed that I was picking up 300 channels via QAM recently when I autoprogrammed a TV.
My OnDemand had been dropping out which is a sure sign we will be switching to the new UDB database with lots of other cool features.
Whatever is going on, I hope it happens soon as all these outages have me dialing for Uverse every day.
nashman2 02-13-09, 12:58 PM It's been nearly 6 months since we got any new HD channels. Nashville seemed then in the upper tier as far as gettting new channels. Now I read where many Comcast markets are at 45 -55 HD channels if not many more.
Ice1138 - you seem to have inside info on Comcast - do you know if we can expect more HD anytime soon?
Also - the U-verse roll out seems very slowwwww. Does anyone reading this thread have it yet? Where? Does anyone even know someone local (Nashville) who has it?
Thanks
andydumi 02-14-09, 08:07 AM Theres several people that have it, mostly around Anrioch and Murfreesboro. The quality seems to be pretty good, on par with Comcast.
I got all this from the uverse forums, which I also read.
Trek7300 02-19-09, 09:08 PM I have gotten 3 offers in the mail in about the last 3 weeks advertising UVERSE. When I got the 1st one, I went to their website, and sure enough, it said it was available to me. I live in Murfreesboro just West of I-24, just South of Highway 96 (Franklin Road). Cason Lane / Riverrock area, near Old Time Pottery.
I have not seen any kind of utility work going on in the neighborhood. How does AT&T deliver UVERSE? Is it fiber to a box in the neighborhood and then copper to the home? Or is it fiber directly to the home?
Robert
andydumi 02-19-09, 09:15 PM It is fiber to the box in the neighborhood, then via copper to your house. If its a newer neighborhood, they may have already laid out fiber to the house.
I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I don't really know where else to do so, but, does anyone know what the channel is on Comcast that airs Emergency Alert System Warnings? I know sometimes they override the whole system for tornado warnings, but I thought that all cable systems had a specific channel that airs all EAS warnings for the area.
Does anyone know how long Comcast will be providing analog channels? For instance, the local Fox affiliate has supposedly made the DTV transition, but I still get the analog version of the channel (channel 6). I'm mostly concerned about the non OTA channels such as ESPN, Disney, etc.
nashman2 02-26-09, 01:09 PM I would think within the next year to 18 months Nashville would go all digital. There will be plenty of publicity when it happens though. Comcast has to make sure every customer has the needed equipment and doesn't loose service. Everyone would get mailers about it, several I would bet.
Comcast could then add more HD :)
As for the Emergency Alert System Warnings - I thought they had to over ride all channels when they are broadcast. Otherwise how would people get warned. There is no specific channel that I'm aware of.

The FCC ruled a couple of year back that cable companies had to provide analog LOCAL channels to their customers through February 2012.
http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-276576A1.pdf
Note that the cable company CAN switch to all digital as long as EVERY subscriber has the equipment to receive the digital signal. So they would have to make sure everyone had a set with a clear QAM tuner or give them a digital set to box. Neither of those things will happen, so the locals in analog should be available until 2012 - unless the FCC changes its mind.
The other channels can be moved at the discretion of the cable company, so no guarantee you could still get those in the future. Of course, the cable company is all about making money - and if they drop every analog channel except the locals and demand everyone rents a box for each set in order to get those channels - they will likely lose a lot of business. So they would either have to provide free boxes or risk that a lot of folks would drop them (or cut back to the $13 limited basic package).
I can say for sure that even with some compression artifacts the digital versions blow away the analog in terms of picture quality - even the SD digital channels. HD channels are even better. So it would be worth it to me to upgrade to "digital" even without HDTV - or switch to Dish or DirecTV. Better still, go with HDTV and don't look back :D .
Dennis
Thanks for the responses! Don't worry, I took the HDTV plunge years ago. What I'm doing now is trying to migrate to a Vista Media Center set up. It has some issues with clear QAM and I want to make sure I'll be able to keep Disney and Nick so that my 2 year old doesn't kill me.
Will they most likely make the current analog channels clear QAM when they switch?
Some of them are in clear QAM now, but most are scrambled QAM. They use a trap to filter out the channels cheapskates (like me) are not supposed to see for our $13 a month payment for limited basic. If they put the new channels in QAM on the vacated analog frequencies that they trap out now, then I guess that could work. Most likely would be you would need a set top box, either a DVT or just a digital tuner - or a set with a cable card slot.
Dennis

Sometimes techs checking the lines mistakenly reconnect cables.
Then you get to see the crappy analog feeds you don't have to pay for. Now if they DO use the trap to block clear QAM stations then losing the filter (either by accident or by upgrading the account) becomes something worthwhile :D .

HTMAN21 03-02-09, 10:32 AM Yesterday as I watched the NASCAR race I noticed much better surround sound. Later as my wife watched her Sunday night soaps she commented that the commercials had lower volume than the program. I also noticed much better sound as well. This A.M. the picture is noticably better.
Has anyone else noticed this?
papercy 03-07-09, 11:47 PM Well, I went on-line tonight and checked to see if U-Verse was available for my home (I live in Franklin) and it was. I've decided to give it a shot because of the number of HD channels available and because of price. We'll see what happens.
thirdday2002 03-09-09, 11:14 PM I got a flyer in the mail today from att saying that uverse is available at my house. I called comcast to cancel my service, and they offered to upgrade me from digital starter to the next digital tier up and throw in the sports package. They also offered to charge me only $5 a month for my HD DVR. Long story short, I'd be paying about $15 less a month than what I was paying before and getting twice as many channels.
For now I took the offer, especially since I don't have a day off for two weeks and wouldn't be able to have att install uverse until then.
I'm still very impressed with the amount of HD channels att offers compared with comcast, (comcast STILL doesn't offer sportssouth!!! uverse does - and it's in HD!!!) and I think I'm going to mull over my options for a couple of days and I may still switch to UVerse.
thirdday2002 03-10-09, 12:03 PM I called att this morning and signed up for uverse. I live in Goodlettsville. They are coming to install it on March 23. (They could have come much sooner, that's just the first day that I had free.) They said that the installation will take 4-6 hours.
I ordered the U200 package and they threw in free HD for a year. They have nearly double the amount of HD channels that comcast currently offers. I will post a review of uverse as soon as I can. If I don't like the service, I have 30 days to cancel. I'm really excited!
papercy 03-11-09, 09:59 PM I started a new thread for Uverse in Nashville to move the Uverse discussion off this thread. I assume the moderator will approve it so if you have Uverse you can join us in the Nashville Uverse thread.
I had UVerse installed on Tuesday and so far its been great.
I was beginning to think this thread was no longer 'comcast'!!
nashman2 03-12-09, 12:55 PM There'd be more about Comcast in this thread if they were doing anything....
One questions though - I've got on ongoing problem with losing channels in the 130 -150 range. 10 +/- are out (mainly Nick channels and MTV, VH1 channels). It started on one set (w/DVR) then went to two more sets one digital another w/DVR. Comcast can't correct this over the phone so a visit is scheduled. Anyone else with this issue?
I only ask because, I was with friends, living in different parts of town, brought this issue up and 4 said they had the same problem. These aren't favorite channels for any of us so only one had tried to get it fixed.
I agree - like WHEN are we getting Comedy Central in HD!?!?!?!?!

Amen! Why would anyone want to pay more money to receive an inferior product? Comcast needs to get on the ball, or they are going to lose alot of customers. They need to add more HD yesterday.

I recently did have this problem. I live in southeast Murfreesboro (between Manchester HWY and Bradyvill Pike) and experienced the same thing several times. I have the DVR and a separate digital (basically a Motorola box that is a housed cable card). What the tech did to correct the issue was to check signal strength and re-do (freshen up) the connections I had coming in from the street/pole and replace the splitters. Apparently he told me that those channels are on the highest band in their spectrum and a 2-3 dB drop in signal would cause that. He did a very good job and I have not had an issue since.
The tech also told me that they are rolling out a new DVR that has more room for HD and can have an external hard drive linked tto it for additional storage. He said that he did a few installs; but most seemed to have firmware issues in the first generation. Does anyone here know about this or have an other spec's?
He also said that since the economy is bad that they are delaying going to an all-digital format and that Comcast is looking into low profile digital boxes (receive 2-99) as no-cost upgrades when they do.

If you're referring to Uverse as the inferior product so far I would have to disagree strongly. Of course every situation is different but I'm paying less and getting more. Picture quality is on par with Comcast and no pixelation which was a major problem with my Comcast reception and which was never totally corrected by Comcast (not intentionally, just a function of distance and a weak signal that not even an amplifier could boost satisfactorily).
Only gripe so far with Uverse is the 2 HD stream limitation which only comes up when I'm recording a show in HD. Again, so far I am extremely pleased.

CaboWabo 03-16-09, 04:06 PM I noticed that I can pick up the channel "ION Life" over the air with my HD tv and an antenna. However when I use the same tv with a direct connection to comcast digital cable and QAM tuner I cant find that channel anywhere in the lineup. By the way Im not talking about ION which is sometimes on Ch 17. ION Life is a whole different channel. Any reason for this?

I am hoping someone can provide some insight on a similar issue I am having all of a sudden. I am using one of the newer Motorola boxes(having recently replaced an older box which suddenly died), and am having an issue that to me resembles a rolling blackout of certain channels. There are times when channel #209 -Palladia- is "currently unavailable", and these times seem to coincide with program slots. For instance, the channel is fine during the afternoon but is unavailable during the evening for two hours, and then pops back up again. It feels as though the channel is blocked while a specific program is on, but then unblocked after that program ends.
Then, today, I was waiting to watch a program on UHD - #208 - and when I turn over to watch that program, I am told the channel must be ordered. Is this an issue in the signal, or is Comcast playing games with programming? Does anyone else have this issue?

This is due to the frequency that these channels reside. They are currently on channel 95 which is in the same frequency range as the FM broadcasts. In the event that there are any loose connections (causing ingress) then the FM signals interfere with the digital channel. If you're having issues, you should call Comcast and schedule a trouble call to have this resolved.

Hi Guys, great thread... lots of good info.
I was wondering, is there a separate thread for OTA in Nashville? I'm looking for info on good antennas, channel lineup, quality of the feed vs Comcast, etc.
I'm in Bellevue and currently use the Winegard SS-3000, which is ok, but I'm hoping to find something to help improve my reception.
Thanks, as always!
Yep.

Two new channels launched on 4/1. Telefutura and Daystar (religious channel). Comcast is set to launch three new HDs in May.

nashman2 04-05-09, 04:53 PM 3???....3 new HD channels?? While I'm grateful for one new HD, that will put us at 43 HDs? Nothing close to U-verse, Direct. (which I can't get)
There is an interview with Steve Burke (president of Comcast Cable) in the Tennessean today, not amazingly lacking in much more than generalities. More HD ..yes..in the next 6-9 months.... He mainly talked about better/faster internet. I have no complaints with my internet, plenty fast now.
What I'd like is more HD.:)

I'm in Hendersonville, and I've had the same issue with Palladia, only it hasn't worked at all in about a month. I get a "this channel should be available shortly" message. Oddly enough, I got the same message on TLC HD a while back and Palladia worked (was still MHD at the time). so now, TLC HD works and Palladia doesn't. Seems fishy to me..

nashman2 04-16-09, 08:31 AM I guess everyone is reading today that come May 1 Comcast adds E!HD, Cartoon Network HD, Travel Channel HD to the lineup.
None of them high on my list, but I'll take them.
Damn it janet! I want Comedy Central in HD!!!
Sevenfeet 04-30-09, 04:38 PM My Tivo just updated the lineup with the new channels as follows:
181 FITV
216 EHD
254 TRAVHD
255 TOONHD
621 CINL
622 GOLTVE
628 SUR
None of the new channels are active yet...I guess they start tomorrow. So we get an SD fitness channel, 3 HD channels (nice to finally have Cartoon Network HD) and three new Spanish language block channels. Anything else on the horizon?
Zakk Wyldcat 05-01-09, 10:39 AM Rather poor HD channel additions in my opinion. Although I was pleasantly surprised to wake up this morning and still have NFL Network.

Those channels were announced over a month ago - when the hell are we gonna get Comedy Central and G4 in HD? Regarding the NFL Network peep this:

nashman2 05-01-09, 12:01 PM I agree that the additions are poor choices for new HD. It would be interesting to know why these were added and not ESPN News HD, Bravo HD or Weather Channel HD. Or at least total content HD channels like SmithsonianHD or MGM HD.
Still, I'll take them......
Well Comcast now says they plan to kill off 40 to 50 more analog channels to make way for a lot more HD and internet capacity. I (and my Tivo) do like that they are avoiding the SDV route.
Seems there is a 50% chance of this happening in the Nashville market this year. Anyone know for sure when we are scheduled for this upgrade?

The News 2 weather channel that was at 86.11 is missing from my clear QAM lineup as of last night. Still missing this morning. It is broadcast OTA on 2-2 without a problem when I checked it last night. I get all the channels around 86.11 so I don't think it is a problem with signal or wiring at my house (and I have changed nothing lately).
Does anyone know if this was removed from the Comcast clear QAM lineup or was it just moved to a new channel and if so, what channel ?
Thanks
Dennis (weather junkie)

I should have reported back that the news 2 weather returned to its normal channel the next night.

If anyone cares, you can now shop online for U-Verse in certain Nashville zip codes which I don't think was available before. Looks like availability by address is coming soon.

I'm in 37221, the workers finished putting up that square box in our condo area, but our address doesn't show up (still) online. I haven't received any fliers or anything either, I guess it's coming soon.

The DCX3400 is available in the Nashville area but it still has a few bugs in the firmware. (ie HDMI Handshake issues with certain TV brand, and green screen when going from SD to HD on certain brands of TV). On a positive note, it has a 250 GB hard drive inside for additional DVR storage.
On a side note, we should have an announcement regarding additional HD channels launching soon.

andydumi 06-16-09, 09:35 PM Its probably the COmedy central group. With cartoon network and those other 2 or 3. All other providers have them now.

I picked up a DVR yesterday and asked about the new box (had to tell her it was the all black one) she said they aren't available yet and it won't have an active ethernet port. That is what I really want, that and access to TV Japan. Comcast just keeps giving me reasons to go to U-verse.
off topic, but any word on when DOCSIS 3.0 internet will be available here?
there was an article in the paper a while back saying June

Nashville's Docsis 3 configuration is well under way and should be ready to go shortly. Once again I can't give any exact dates until an official announcement is made but you should hear some news in the next few weeks. Some areas of town will be ready before others but that's natural due to extensive amount of configuration that's required and the size of the Comcast coverage area.

nashman2 06-19-09, 09:11 AM I'll plead ignorance here, so what does Nashville's "Docsis 3 configuration" mean?
Speedier internet? Much more room for HD channels?
I'll plead ignorance here, so what does Nashville's "Docsis 3 configuration" mean? Speedier internet?
Yes. Multiple channels to one cable modem = faster speeds. I am sure Comcast will charge extra for the extra speeds for those that will want them. New DOCSIS 3.0 modem will be required.
On a related note, ice1138 how can I get port 25 unblocked on my cable modem /IP?
During one of the recent storms my power was off and the UPS holding up the cable modem ran down. After powering it back up later I found port 25 is blocked on all my PCs. I e-mailed support and they keep answering that I have to switch to the alternate port. I don't have any spam spewing PCs at home - I am thinking I got a new IP on power up that one already had port 25 blocked. If I can't get Comcast to fix it, I will start trying to force a new IP until I (hopefully) find one that will work.
EDIT: When Comcast blocks port 25 they block it completely. Other ISPs (BellSouth) block it to any other mail server except theirs. Comcast will not even let you send mail through thier server or any other server. What is next? Blocking VoIP traffic if you don't sub to their brand of it? P2P networks? HTTP? FTP?
Thanks,
Dennis

All port blocking is done at the national NOC, and not done at all on the local level. You would would need to contact the Comcast Abuse dept to get yourself removed from the block.

Docsis 3 (D3) will result in faster speeds for everyone. Most Comcast systems, that have launched D3, have doubled speeds on all packages with no additional charge to the end user. In order to get the extreme speed tier (50 Mbps) you will need to purchase a new D3 modem.
Sorry, D3 does nothing to increase HD bandwidth.

Or I just can get another IP and the block should go away, right?

There's also a new 22mbit down tier that also requires a new modem I think. Since it only costs $10 more than my current 6mbit down speed I think I'm going to upgrade to it. Can't wait!
I hear they are dropping the cost on the 50mbit tier to $99 in some areas of the country, but that's still a bit too rich.
Yes we sure do
I'd love to get Nick in HD and Comedy Central since they are already in other markets PLEASE!!

COMCAST ROLLS OUT EXTREME 50 MBPS HIGH-SPEED INTERNET SERVICE
ACROSS MIDDLE TENNESSEE
13 Communities Now Have Access to New, Faster Speed Tier Options;
Will Double Speeds for Most Existing Customers For No Additional Cost
NASHVILLE, TN (June 30, 2009) – Comcast, Tennessee’s leading provider of entertainment, information and communications products and services, today announced it is beginning to make the leap from broadband to wideband with the launch of next-generation DOCSIS 3.0 for residential homes across Middle Tennessee. Communities served by the new upgraded services include Murfreesboro, La Vergne, Smyrna, Rutherford County, Dickson, Dickson County, Tennessee City, Kingston Springs, White Bluff, Burns, Charlotte, Pegram and Waverly. Comcast will continue the rollout in its Middle Tennessee market throughout 2009.
With wideband, Comcast will introduce a new echelon of Internet speed tiers, which will redefine the customer experience online and create a platform for Internet innovation in the years ahead. Comcast will offer among the fastest speeds available today, including the Extreme 50 tier with download speeds of up to 50 Mbps. Wideband will also enable Comcast to double speeds for the majority of existing high-speed Internet customers at no additional cost.
“Comcast has the largest fiber optic network in the nation, and with wideband we will utilize our existing fiber optic network that is already in the ground in neighborhoods across our footprint. With this next generation of service, our customers’ online experience will be dramatically enhanced. Best of all, this service will continue to be launched in Middle Tennessee throughout 2009 making it available to all of our customers throughout the service area,” said John Gauder, market vice president for Comcast in Middle Tennessee. “And this is just the beginning, wideband, combined with our fiber optic network, will give us the capability of meeting the needs of our customers for many years to come by offering even faster speeds in the future.”
As part of the wideband deployment, Comcast will launch two new premium speed tiers to its residential customers. Both new services are ideal for households simultaneously using several computers or Internet-connected devices. They also will appeal to those who simply want some of the fastest speeds available today:
New Residential Tiers
• Extreme 50, offering up to 50 Mbps of downstream speed and up to 10 Mbps of upstream speed at $99.95/month.*
• Ultra, offering up to 22 Mbps of downstream speed and up to 5 Mbps of upstream speed at $62.95/month.*
With Extreme 50, Comcast customers will be able to download a high-def movie (6 GB) in about 16 minutes, a standard-def movie (2 GB) in about 5 minutes and a standard-def TV show (300 MB) in a matter of seconds. Customers with Extreme 50 also will be able to download digital photos, songs and games faster than ever.
In addition to the new speed tiers, Comcast also is increasing speeds for most of its existing customers at no additional charge.
• Performance tier customers will benefit from doubled downstream and upstream speeds, offering up to 12 Mbps and 2 Mbps, respectively.
• Performance Plus customers will be upgraded to Comcast’s Blast! tier, which will double their download speeds to up to 16 Mbps and provide up to 2 Mbps of upload speed.
Plus, with PowerBoost® technology, customers are able to enjoy even faster speeds to download and upload files such as videos, games, music and photos.
To find out when wideband will be available customers can visit www.comcast.com/fastestfast or call (615) 244-5900. Comcast customers will also receive notification as DOCSIS 3.0 becomes available in their area.
*Pricing for residential customers and requires subscription to Comcast Cable and/or Comcast Digital Voice service (does not include modem/EMTA or router).

Thanks as always for the info. I did try calling 244-5900 and asking about the new moto cable box that you had talked about last week I think it was but was told by the rep he did not think it would be available here until September. Does this sound right or did the rep just not know. Again thanks for the info and am hoping the Mt Juliet area gets the upgrade soon as well as some new HD.

tetsuwanatom 07-07-09, 06:37 AM That is what I am hoping too.
hmm, I dunno guys. I noticed Comcast is offering a good deal on the Triple Play but you have to sign on for two years. I think they're trying to hold on to as many subscribers as possible before you escape to U-Verse by getting you locked into a contract. So their strategy appears to be delay rather than advance on the HD front.
nashman2 07-07-09, 08:01 PM tetsuwanatom - unfortunately for us, you're likely right. Comcast shows no intention of adding more HD (here) except in groups of 3 HDs at a time. That has been their pattern for the past 2 years.
Also unfortunately, U-verse is rolling out very slowly.
Comcast is rolling out 10-20-30 new HDs in some markets. I wish Nashville was as valued a market.
Ice1138 said Comcast was going to announce, soon, more HDs, but that was 3 weeks ago and still no announcement. :(
tone363 07-08-09, 10:31 AM Ok so last night I called Comcast as my current promotion expired and I talked to a guy in customer retention about my bill and getting it changed. Now I am just going off what he said so take it for what its worth, but I got my bill squared away and asked him about upcoming HD.
I asked him if he could give me any specifics and he told me he could not remember all the channels we were getting but they just got a memo about them last Thursday and that we are getting more in August and to be watching the website for it. Also NFL network everyone will get in August. Like I said his words not mine so take it for what its worth but it goes along with what ice1138 had mentioned.
nashman2 07-08-09, 11:54 AM The first of August would match what Comcast did last year, when they added 3 new channels.
I think we heard what they were a couple of weeks in advance.
I believe Comcast will add more, but I hope this year it's more like 20 instead of 3....:)

They called last night with this offer. I asked what the penalty is for leaving before 2 years, he said $199. Considering his offer would only save me about 100 per year, I skipped his offer.
I want to try U-verse when it comes.

There's 13 HDs launching in roughly a month. The original date was delayed by two weeks which is why we haven't had the official announcement yet. Should be in a few days.
nashman2 07-11-09, 04:57 PM First, I'm grateful for any HD additions and 13 is a lot better than 3.:)
I wonder why 13 though? 13 is generally considered an unlucky number. 12 -"a dozen new HD channels!", 16 - "It's a sweet 16 new HD's!!!". Since I must over analyze Comcast's every move. I wonder if 13 is the max they can currently sqeeze onto the system.
It still hurts to read, in the HDTV Programming thread that parts of California are getting 51 new HD channels...
Another point to consider, although my math may be off, we have at most 19 empty channels between 194 and 261 (Sports Tier start). We will eventually get more HD. Unless Comcast splits HD locations, they have to move something to make room. Just something useless to ponder...
Lastly thanks again Comcast for the additions, and I look forward to learning the complete list.
ice1138 07-11-09, 07:30 PM I wonder why 13 though? 13 is generally considered an unlucky number.
It's 13 because its four sets of three channels plus MLB HD.
-ice1138
Ou8thisSN 07-12-09, 03:37 AM When comcast transitions to docsis 3.0, is there ANY chance that they would consider or even go back to 2 HD channels per 1 analog channel, instead of the bit-starved 3 channel squeeze? I wouldnt even care if Fios was offered in our are but it isn't. But is that even a possiblity? at this point, with the degrading picture quality, I'm not even that excited about the new HD additions...

What is magical about sets of 3? Then why not 5 sets of 3? If Comcast can add MLB HD as a single HD then why sets of 3?
I wouldn't get your hopes up for unmolested HD.
The plan seems to be to eventually migrate to MPEG-4 compression:
http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Cable-Begins-To-Embrace-MPEG4-103439
and probably in the very very long term they may switch to some form of IPTV as they are forced to compete with other video providers over the internet.
ice1138 07-13-09, 02:46 PM What is magical about sets of 3? Then why not 5 sets of 3? If Comcast can add MLB HD as a single HD then why sets of 3?
The reason for the groups of three, is that most of the HD channels from Comcast are fed from a national media center that does the encoding of the channels. They use a much higher quality encoder than can economically be purchased at the local level. This saves money for the company and ensures that the HD fed from the national center (Comcast Media Center) is identical across the nation. 3 channels is the most that feasibly be run on a single 256 QAM digital carrier (38.3 Mbps). Most of these national feeds have customized encoders that have been set up for the type of content they contain, and greater care is given to encoding algorithms than would normally be found at the local levels.
I wouldn't get your hopes up for unmolested HD
In this case MLB HD will not be rate shaped (reencoded to a lower bandwidth) because it will be encoded locally. As with all local HD encodes (ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, WNAB, ESPN, ESPN 2, NFL, Showtime, Palladium), this will go out on a 2:1 feed (2 HDs per QAM carrier). You can read more on this subject in some of the other system threads where they get into more detail regarding encoding options for typical Comcast systems.

The DVR recording problem is an issue with TVguide (Macrovision) not correctly flagging content and should be resolved shortly. I'll write back tomorrow with an official ETA.

When I re-upped my triple play deal the rep I had also said that the NHL and NBA channels were going over to the digital standard tier on Aug 1st too. Any chance we see HD versions of either of those in the near future?
Also, is there any reason that on Channel 247 (Sports and Events Channel)that we do not see a program listing that lets us know that something is on there? Otherwise there is something there or a test pattern on it when I flip over to it. It'd be nice to know that there is a game on there when flipping through the guide...

No time frame on NHL or NBA HD at this moment. If I had to guess, I would say early next year.

The reason for no guide data on ch 247 is that the content usually comes from several different channels. (CSS HD and FSS HD)

Not trying to shoot the messenger and very appreciative of your input; but that sounds more like someone's excuse than a reason IMO for no guide on Channel 247. I remember the VS/Golf channel HD having a guide that gave listings when that channel was shared. Seems like it could be CSS/FSN HD listing instead; but guess that there is a plan to make a CSS and a FSN HD channel eventually... I mean it's not like the regions games that are in HD aren't scheduled months in advance since FSN-South only has limted HD event broadcast capabilities at this point. Even a text 'Message Alert' might be nice to let us know something is on that night. OK sorry for the rant... it's just one of those things that I've missed since coming over from DirecTV on a Triple Play deal is having a listing on the Regional Sports Net Alternate channels.

This is getting really annoying. I've had trouble-free extended basic service from Comcast for about 12 years, but in July I took advantage of a promo to upgrade to their Digital Preferred service w/On Demand and an HD-DVR (Moto DCX 3400).
When it comes to receiving any of the regular HD channels, I'm not having any problems, but the HD programming on On Demand almost never works during prime evening and night time hours. During those hours, anytime I select an HD program I get the e5218 error ("Error retrieving data..." along with a phone number to call). It seems to work great between the hours of about 2AM-10AM. In the afternoons it's about a 50-50 chance, but we generally watch TV in the evenings and that's when it never works at all.
Seems to me it is a bandwidth issue on Comcast's side. I've called the number shown with the error message and they sent out a cable tech. He was here about two hours and he tested and replaced every connection from the pole to the HD-DVR, and managed to boost our signal to well within the proper tolerance range, but it didn't solve the problem at all. He got to see for himself how it changes also, because he arrived at about 10AM and was only seeing the error about 1 in 10 tries, but by the time he left it was 50-50.
So it's still unresolved, and anytime I call them for an update Comcast just wants to send out another tech, but it seems clear that the first guy eliminated the chances that the problem is caused by anything on our end.
It's bad enough that, as far as we are concerned, the On Demand options are not that great to begin with, but the few things we can find that we want to watch just don't work during prime viewing hours.
Anyone out there familiar with the Comcast On Demand error message ....
Ahh yes - we just LOVE it when the few and far between times we want to watch something OD and in HD it frequently 'fails' and we get an error with a number to call. It also happens during the prime-time night hours as you've experienced. They shoot a signal - offer to come out etc etc - bottom-line is it's gotta be bandwith issues on their end.
ice1138 07-29-09, 10:10 PM I can confirm DOCSIS 3.0 is finally lit in West Meade. The new speed boost is cool. You don't have to wait for the starter kit. You can buy the Moto SB6120 on your own cheaper anyway.
You are on DOCSIS 3.0 when the receive light goes blue meaning bonded channels.
Docsis 3 won't be in Bellevue, West Meade & West End for another couple of weeks. The only time that you will need the D3 modem is if you subscribe to the 50 Mbps package, otherwise a Docsis 2 compliant modem will be able to handle the new speed tiers.

I have given up on Comcast On Demand mainly because there is very little choice and is also expensive. With a Netflix account for $8.99 a month and a $99 Roku box I can stream up to 12,000 movies and also get new movies in the mail. The Roku box also connects to Amazon streaming and I can get a just released full HD movie rental for $1 less than Comcast.
I am also ticked at Comcast because when I complain about outages they send me a coupon for a movie rental. However the coupon is not for the HD version which is the only thing I would want to watch.
vandypred 07-30-09, 01:44 PM I noticed last night that HBO OnDemand is now in HD!!

Are we still heading toward new HDs on Aug. 14?
Zakk Wyldcat 07-31-09, 11:01 AM I'm seeing ESPNU on channel 272, but I'm getting 'channel not available'. Is this going to be part of the Sports Package or another tier/package?

ESPNU won't be turned on until 12:30 AM tonight, along with MLB HD (Ch 199) & This TV on ch 249 (new local WTVF channel). Unless you live in Smithville or Winchester where they were test-launched 2 days ago. MLB and ESPNU will be in the Sports Tier and standard digital cable.

bryrock 07-31-09, 02:43 PM ...bottom-line is it's gotta be bandwith issues on their end.
Indeed. I squeaky-wheeled this issue until I got a hold of a corporate service rep. Turns out I'm on a node that is at full capacity. They say it will be upgraded tonight, sometime after midnight, and I should begin seeing improvements on Saturday night. We'll see.
ChrisPC 07-31-09, 07:26 PM FYI, Newschannel 5+ is back on OTA, and it will be moved next to WTVF-DT on the Comcast lineup (250, IIRC), according to a crawl on the channel.

I asked in a previous posting I asked if wireless speeds would improve with this upgrade.
As a Bellevue resident I can now see a noticable speed increase on my laptop.
This is a great improvement!!:)

Yes the HD launches on Aug 14 are still on. Just a quick note that Ch 249 This TV was also launched last night.

No ch.201, ch.199 or ch. 272 here in Antioch so far =(. We did get ch.249 and ch. 250 several hours ago, however. ( I am subscribed to digital starter with HD)
The Franklin D3 work was completed last night and new speeds for Williamson County will take effect on Friday.

Hate to bug you for some tech support but my modem just doesn't seem to be picking up the new speeds after power cycling it a couple times last night and today. I did get the ad in the mail saying the new speeds were here effective July 30.
The modem is a rented Terayon TJ715x. When I go to its web server and look at the configuration it is still capped at 6/1:
Modem IP 73.26.xxx.xxx
Software Version 6.24
DOCSIS Version 2.0
Configuration file name d11_m_ecm715_silvertb25_c01.cm
Maximum Downstream Bandwidth 6600000
Maximum Upstream Bandwidth 1100000
Any idea how to get it to 12/2 ? Thanks

I'm pretty sure that the new channels are part of the digital preferred and not digital starter. Digital starter is just the basic analog channels plus about 10 other digital channels. I'll look into it to verify and post back.

MLBHD and ESPNU are still giving the 'Channel Available Shortly' messages here in M'boro... called Comcast and Customer Support reported no other calls on this.
brookspw 08-02-09, 09:22 AM Ice, I have a tech coming this afternoon. Been getting the E1003 error when trying to access OnDemand (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't -- they cancelled the call TWICE without telling me). They say it is the box -- I think it is signal strength.
Anyway, I've had the same 6412 for 3 years with no problem. If they insist it is the box, do I want another 6412 or the new 3412 or 3416? What is better (or not better) about the 34xx?

A 1003 error is due to no return path (the box is not talking back to the system) and you will most likely need a service call to address the issue. If you want a new DVR, we now have the DCX3400 which is still a little buggy with certain TV types but adds a fair amount of storage space over your existing box (250 GB vs 120 GB hard drive). Do you have internet through Comcast? If so, you're return should be solid, but you will need a technician on site to measure it from the box. Also if you are getting a "Should be available shortly" message on ESPNU and MLB then you have a signal problem.
The signal for return and Digital channel 7 (where ESPNU and MLB HD reside) are not that far off, and certainly warrant a service call if you are experiencing issues.

ronobvious 08-03-09, 12:10 PM Just an update, Bellevue and parts of West Meade got their new D3 speeds last night.
Are you sure? I live in Bellevue and I'm still running at 6/1 and today is 8-3-09. I made a slight error in a new modem purchase and bought a SB5101 on Saturday. Not a D3 modem but I don't have anything higher than the Performance tier. In fact I didn't even need to replace my SB3100 since it supports speeds up to 38mbps. I don't care about the HD TV that much, I only want a internet speed increase to my Roku box so I can get the best video quality to my TV.
Where do we get the official word from Comcast on what speeds we should be at and if our section of town has been upgraded?
How can I query the modem on how it is provisioned? I have a Belkin N Wireless router between my desktop and SB5101.
Thanks!
craiger88 08-03-09, 12:29 PM Hey guys, I am moving to Mufreesboro from Memphis in a week and I was reading about the new DCX 3400. Are they available in Murfreesboro, and if so, can I just ask for one and they will give it to me instead of an older box?
Also, my roommates are already there and they have an older box in the living room. Can we call Comcast and get them to switch the old box for a new DCX 3400?
Thanks for your help. I love these boards!

I went to the Comcast office off of New Salem Hwy and picked one up Saturday morning. I found that it's easiest to just go and get you one!! Works great so far and seems to be much faster to respond to the remote.
wineman 08-03-09, 10:10 PM You will not see the new speed on a DOCSIS 2.0 compliant cable modem. You will be on a new subnet as well once you switch. I'm hitting 16/7 on speakeasy speedtest.
wineman 08-03-09, 10:15 PM There is a rather exhaustive forum on another site that can answer ALL of your DOCSIS 3.0 questions.

tetsuwanatom 08-04-09, 03:15 AM They called last night with this offer. I asked what the penalty is for leaving before 2 years, he said $199. Considering his offer would only save me about 100 per year, I skipped his offer.
I want to try U-verse when it comes.
When I logged in to pay the phone/cell phone bill I got a notice that I'm now U-Verse eligible (Bellevue area). I'm giving it a hard look.
I'm not noticing any speed increase over Internet but I do see MLB and NFL in HD.

Comcast increased all speed tiers in areas where they launched D3. The only time that you will need a D3 modem is when you subscribe to the 50 Mbps package. This service level can not be reached with a D2 modem because is does not support channel bonding.
ronobvious, have you reset your modem since the new speeds were launched? If so and its still not working, then PM me with your modem mac addresses.
