twelvepbrs 10-03-06, 03:46 AM I complained that the HD lineup hasn't changed in over a year and that I was considering switching to Sat becuase of it. I never threatened and then simply asked if they could do anything for me.
I've been getting a similar discount because of the twenty or so times i had to call to get them to carry the MLB Extra-Innings HD games this summer, i'll have to think of something else to complain about when my discount ends (shouldn't be too hard)
dagware 10-03-06, 03:24 PM I'm new to the whole HD technology so excuse me for asking a dumb newbie question. I live in Placentia, CA (Orange County)
Hi neighbor! I live near Tri-City park.

presant 10-03-06, 06:58 PM Oh well, I thought it was clear but by the time I went through a 100 music choice channels I thought I might have deleted it by mistake.
Thanks.
I live in West LA w/Comcast. Have the feed split before the Moto 6412, other feed goes direct into Digital cable feed to my Sharp D5U LCD. Scanned the digital going straight into the sharp and came up with channels 80.5 on up to about 117. Have the locals, pbs in HD off of this feed. Also noted that I can watch stuff that others (I guess) around me have ordered - only they have control over the ffwd, pause, rew controls. Sorta wierd to watch a movie this way but it's interesting to see how digital content is distributed over the line.
BTW, my Moto 6412 croaked last week and I'm waiting for a 6416 this week. Tried to force a reset and reformat of the 6412 from info on another post in the forum - didn't help.

Time Warner Cable Announces New Channel Line-Up, Digital Packaging and Pricing in Los Angeles
Tuesday October 3, 4:37 pm ET
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Just 60 days after the integration of Southern California's Adelphia and Comcast operations, Time Warner Cable, a subsidiary of Time Warner Inc. (NYSE: TWX - News), announces a series of product and customer service improvements to its acquired systems. Starting next month, Time Warner Cable Los Angeles Region will roll out a regionwide standardized digital channel line-up, new genre-based programming blocks, additional high-definition channels and ethnic-language networks, 100% digital picture and sound, the launch of new High-Speed Online packages, the start of email domain name changes, and the beginning of Digital Phone launches.
To assist customers during this major transition, Time Warner Cable has launched a comprehensive customer communication campaign consisting of television, radio, outdoor and print advertising. * MORE HD, Digital, and Ethnic Language Networks: The new line-up
includes 20 HD channels, a dozen new Spanish-language channels, three

Domain will change to janesmith@roadrunner.com for previous Adelphia
customers and janesmith@ca.rr.com for former Comcast customers.
* Digital Phone Launch: In mid-December, the newly acquired areas of
Time Warner Cable will begin seeing launches of its new digital phone

Time Warner Unifies L.A.
By Steve Donohue 10/3/2006 5:20:00 PM
Time Warner Cable said it is moving quickly to integrate the systems it recently acquired from Adelphia Communications and Comcast in the Los Angeles area, boasting Tuesday that it will standardize the digital-channel lineup in the region beginning in November.
The changes will involve switching to genre-based channel lineups, the introduction of Digital Phone, new HDTV channels and additional ethnic-language launches, Time Warner said.
Its Los Angeles-area systems will adopt genre-based channel lineups, grouping networks by categories such as kids, sports, movies and HD, Time Warner said, adding that the move is designed to ease channel surfing.
The MSO said its new lineup includes 20 HD channels, one-dozen new Spanish-language channels, three additional Asian-language channels and three networks that target the African-American community.
Time Warner said it is marketing the changes through a campaign involving TV, radio, outdoor and print advertising, in addition to bill inserts and e-mail messages.

If this is true, why is there a separate link to almost every city TWC now serves. If it were truly a unified lineup, there would be exactly one PDF document, instead of teh 50 or so that there actually are.
absolutic 10-04-06, 09:51 AM Well guys ang girls, my saga with waiting for TWC to come to install my cable ended in the following way: I installed all the cable myself. I also gave a few compliments to a lady at my local former Comcast office and she gave me yesterday a brand-spanking-new in the box Motorola 6416 DVR box, which I also installed myself to. I connected it through HDMI to one tv and through component cables to my tv in the bedroom (HDMI and Component are both active at the same time!) and so far I've been running it at 1080i. I will switch to 720p in couple of days to see if the picture be better. I did not see a 'pass-through' option in my 6416 box when it comes to HD, I guess you have to choose 720p or 1080i.
Coming from Dish Network where I had in excess of 20 HD channels to TWC (where I have less HD channels) I expected to see much worse HD picture with TWC. Because I've read that TWC compress even more than Dish and I expected to see some pixelation and artifacts. I was pleasently surprised. The picture to my eye is just as good as Dish HD channels. That made me happy.
I have a question and I dont know if it has been answered. First of all I don't see ESPN2 HD....I guess I have to wait until some day in October or November when they finally finish with their lineup movements. What about FSNHD? I am a huge LA Kings hockey fan and the season starts this weekend. Which channel do I find FSNHD? Someone mentioned on this or another forum that they have some "Special Events' channel where they put games sometimes when they have HD feed like FSNHD. Where is that channel?
Do any of you know if today's Dodgers game against the Mets will be broadcast in HD? I saw it listed under Channel 13 and the HD MLB Channel, so I'm presuming that it will be blacked-out on the HD Channnel.
I see the Dodgers-Mets game listed on 939 ESPND @ 1 pm following the Twins-A's starting at 10 am.
I too have a Moxi unit and boy was I disappointed when I upgraded my sd receiver to the new TWC HD DVR. It's not the Moxi interface. Although most of the functionality is in the new unit, I would describe the Moxi interface as Windows XP (or Mac OS X) and the new unit's interface as DOS. Did TWC tell you that they're going to discontinue supporting the Moxi unit? If you like your Moxi, I'm willing to wager that you won't be too thrilled with the new DVR unit. I'm looking at switching to satellite dish! But, yes, the new DVR has an HDMI output.
They didn't say whether the Moxi would be discontinued but conventional wisdom around this board seems to indicate as much. Personally, I think it is very unlikely that they will rollout any new updates to the Moxi. This means no external hard drive, no Moxi-mate or any of the other cool features that Digeo advertised. Its sad because Moxi had so much potential yet so little was realized.

It's pretty much a doomed piece of hardware. Their plans of world domination (including the commercial version) are fataly flawed. This will just become a blip on the HDTV rollout of life.
twelvepbrs 10-04-06, 02:10 PM The game should be on ESPN, there's no blackouts during the playoffs, ESPN/FOX have exclusive rights (locals get nothing)

When I called TWC last week, the rep told me that before the end of the year, they would send a "postcard" out to everyone to let them know that there Moxi needs to be exchanged out.
I've called the last 2 nights complaining that my Video on Demand has not worked on neither one of my Moxi's. In fact it has been giving us problems this past month and getting worse. I keep getting error codes. I use to just hit the reset button and it would work but not anymore. Anyway, this evening I spoke with Ceasar at the TWC call center in Ontario, he said they have been getting so many complaints /problems about the Moxi. Long story short, this Friday (crosssing my fingers) between 8-10am I'm getting the Moto 6416. He was kind a surpirsed I knew the new model #. :)
I'm in the West Valley (Woodland Hills) and I just talked to TW about the new lineup. I asked if they would have FSN HD and ESPN2 HD and she told me the information she had showed that they would be available in October. After telling her I don't see them in the mailer I just received, she realized that what she was looking at internally is different than what was mailed and what is available online. She showed all the HD channels as being in the 900's, rather than from 402 to 431 that was mailed to us.
She is supposed to research this tomorrow and give me a call tomorrow night. I will not hold my breath, however, for a return call. But I will be calling Andrea (she's a supervisor) back tomorrow night to see if she has any answers.
Just to followup on this.
The supervisor never called me back, of course, so I called again tonight. This time, they told me that the channels (ESPN 2HD & FSN HD) will not be available immediately on Oct. 18th, when they rollout the new Channel Lineup, but they will be made available sometime in the future. They don't know if it will be one month or six months. What a bunch of B$. Get it together TW!!
HiDefbg 10-04-06, 11:12 PM I'm in Marina del Rey on TWC. Recorded Law & Order and Cold Case in HDTV on Moto 64xx. Anybody know what causes this sound problem?: On playback, every so often, music and effects can be heard, but when anybody opens their mouth, nothing comes out of the speakers (naturarally, all commercials can be heard loud and clear). In other words, the dialogue is completely gone. Tried both digital optical and analog RCA connectors to my receiver -- no difference. Does this sound like a transmission problem from outside, or something internal to my hardware? thanks all! bg

Something was wrong with Law and Order on NBC that night. Sound problems for many folks as well as OTA too. Had problems here also. :(

Correct, they have SA boxes and were real TW customers.
bigshemp 10-06-06, 12:17 AM Interesting in that if you switched over from Comcast (or had cable installed prior to 9/18), you don't have the HDNet, HDNet Movies and Universal HD -- and maybe others like ESPN2 -- options. If you installed your cable afterwards, you do. What's with that? I'm in Playa del Rey and my switchover is on 12/12.
designguy23 10-06-06, 01:02 AM yeah, whats up with that? I am a former comast subscriber, and had comcast installed before 9/18. Why is it that after 9/18, people get more hd channels then others? I live in the 90048 zipcode. Thats not fair, cant we do anything about it?

Speaking of which, when I got my TWC this week, I got HBO for 5$ a month (for 6 mo) and Showtime for 5$ (for 6 mo). It looks to me like HBO on demand is free for me (at least I did not encounter any message along the way saying "warning you have to pay extra if you want to see the first 4 episodes of Entourage,"). I just had TWC HD installed for my new XBR2 and called the rep regarding no signal for ESPN2 HD. She said it won't be working until around November 14.
I have noticed a great difference in the HD picture quality (vis cable card). Discovery HD, HBO and Showtime are great. For the local stations, KABC looks good but KNBC and KCBS are of a lesser quality even though the signal is being displayed at 1080i. Is this typical?

It's normal to get the premium On Demand when you subscribe to that channel EXCEPT Starz, they charge extra, F them. Sho has much more content than Starz, I think you did fine!

No, I was originally with Comcast. I'll be at the game, so I won't know how the recording will work.
Also, I am surprised that FSN would go through the expense of broadcasting the game in HD when not all of their customers who have FSN can get FSN HD.

oh yes i've had a 5.2 ghz audo/video sender transmission system that I used before but had no use for, I simply disconnected all the audio/video wires and using it as rf extender - works like a charm.

2 out of 3 ain't bad...
One of my 6416s was not provisioned correctly. It is set up for the wrong area and many (but not all) of the channels are either missing or on the wong number. ie 45 is HSN instead of Fox News. I called and was assured it would be fixed. Not so much, called again and it was too late to fix and we'll have to wait for the morning.
Other than that so far so good. The interface ain't purty but it works and with a little hacking got 30 second skip and 15 second replay. All my recordings are reprogrammed and we'll see what new adventures happen. All 3 are connected via HDMI (MonoPrice) and the new remotes are nicer than either the Moto's it's replacing or the MOXI.

Mine has spread to a total of 3 channels, DiscHD, ESPN2-HD, and TNT-HD. I called TWC tech support and they told me to reset the box (after 15 minutes on hold waiting to someone). Reseting did nothing. I leave town tomorrow for 3 weeks, so no service calls anytime soon for me. She sad she is putting a credit on my account (I swear she said $13.90). We'll see what happens. Thank goodness the USC game is not on ESPN2 today. Coincidentally, I also can not log into my online account to view/pay my bill. I get a message stating:

I'me getting it in my 5.1 system and a stereo TV both hooked via HDMI one also with coax to a 5.1 amp. It's during the game and commercials. I haven't tested OTA yet as it's happening less frequently now. At one point it was chronic.

DSperber 10-07-06, 11:46 PM ...with a little hacking got 30 second skip and 15 second replay. I still find it astonishing that the numerous discussions about programming the remotes for the 64xx DVRs that have been posted not only in THIS thread but also in other threads in the "Recorders" forum simply seem to not exist to many participants, especially new owners of these DVRs who you'd think would be doing RESEARCH rather than just complaining that "it's not a MOXI".
For example, just back on page 73 of this thread, in my own post #2168 dated 9/22/06 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8488384&&#post8488384) in response to serious questions from another new owner about the 64xx vs. Moxi, where I patiently responded to each question and complaint and for which I was seriously thanked by that owner for my assistance and for the information I provided him.
In that just 3-week old post IN THIS VERY THREAD I also provided links to my previous posts regarding programming the remotes for the much needed (1) 30-second skip, (2) mute/un-mute toggle, and (3) returning any previously programmed key back to its factory-assigned default function or non-function. I had, in fact, found these "recipes" out myself several years ago... from research on AVS and uncovering others' posts providing these same recipes.
You don't need to rely on Wikipedia. Just "search" here, in AVS Forum, where all of that Wikipedia stuff originated! We've been talking about this Motorola family of DVRs, its problems and workarounds and solutions, FOR YEARS!!!
In case you didn't know it, the "page down" button on the remote (at least the sliver remote for the 6412, which is what I have) is already programmed by the factory to be a "15-second rewind" function. No hack or programming of any other button is needed (unless you don't like using the page-down key, which I find to be in a perfectly ergonomic location on my remote and I don't even need to look down to feel it and use it in the dark).
So once again, for other new owners of the Motorola 64xx family of DVRs (i.e. new TWC/Comcast/Adelphia subscribers who are losing their Moxi box and getting a 64xx replacement DVR) who might just be coming into this discussion, please do your own "search" into this thread and also the various "official" threads on the "Recorders" forum, to find out what existing owners/users of the Motorola DVRs have to say and teach you.
And yet one more time, here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6412716&&#post6412716) are the instructions for how to program the remote and also how to revert a key back to its factory purpose (follow the imbedded link to the true "recipe" post). Note that the original "recipe" is in the archive for 2005, so follow that dialog that the forum will present. Ok... I'll make your life easier. Here (http://archive2.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5327687&&#post5327687) is the direct link to the original 2005 archived "recipe".
There was some concern that the new "black" remotes might be different from the old "silver" remotes for which these programming methods were initially aimed. But apparently that concern no longer exists, and the programming method is the same even with the newer "black" versions of the remote... from what was said earlier in this thread.
I think the cable companies (e.g. Comcast in Chicago) are now even providing these same instructions for programming these commonly desired functions when they deliver DVRs to new users. The instructions are even on a printed handout they give the subscriber!
I feel like I'm in the presence of greatness. I'm so honored! and humbled!

You have one approach, taken here on AVS Forum, where you have ONE thread for each local system with EVERY question under the sun asked and answered by subscribers in that local system's area, probably duplicating what is also being asked an answered in every other local thread by those other subscribers. And you don't know it, and each thread is thousands of posts long, and the "search" mechanism on this forum is not all that friendly.
Similarly you have one "Official 6412 with i/Guide" thread in the recorders forum, to collect everything pertaining to that DVR. Again, thousands of posts, and daunting to search through... and no doubt duplicate information is present there as is present in many local system threads.
But you have relatively few threads, each of which is unfortunately infinitely long and ever-growing. Few threads, thousands of posts.
In contrast, with Wiki you have thousands and thousands of articles, each answering a very specific question with a very specific answer, and powered by a very effective "search" process. Sounds ideal when you're looking for the answer to a specific question. And it probably is.
Two enormous sources of information, providing answers to questions. Organized and searched differently, but both providing answers if you know how to use the respective tools.
Hi,
What is the difference between the 6416 and the 6412? I have two of the latter.
Thanks,
[QUOTE=WeHoMyke]I received my 2 6416's Friday morining. So far so good. IMO the UI isn't that bad. At least the buttons respond a lot faster.
Hi,
I was looking at the new TWC lineup. I did not notice any new HD Channels that I had with Comcast in Santa Clarita.
I have been lobbying both Comcast and TWC to add at least the National Geographic HD channel. So far this has been falling on deaf ears.
Has anyone noticed any new HD channels in the new lineup, any deleted?
Hi,
What is the difference between the 6416 and the 6412? I have two of the latter.
Thanks,.
I think the main thing is the hard drive is smaller on the 6412. 120gb vs 160gb

Hello guys.
I was offered a free upgrade to the Motorola 6416, how does this box compare to the MOXI?
Twice the storage, interface is not as pretty but quite a bit faster. Some features better some worse. TWICE THE STORAGE!
JoePerches 10-09-06, 02:07 PM Some features better some worse.
This is my Motorola 6416 iGuide vs Digeo 9012 Moxi comparison.
Does your comparison include other items?
Motorola 6416 w/iGuide is better:
Hardware:
o More storage (160GB vs 80)
o Quieter
o Lower power consumption (~40 watts vs ~80)
o HDMI
o SATA (future)
iGuide Software:
o Faster menu response
o Grid based Electronic Program Guide (with ads)
o Dedicated "list" button to select recording to view
o Recording list view by title/channel/date
Digeo 9012 Moxi is better:
Hardware:
o none
Moxi Software:
o 10ft UI
o Minimal learning curve - WAF - Grandma can use
o Channel icon graphics
o Record show or series
o Record series options
o Smooth scroll not page jump scroll
o No distracting UI "tearing", like double buffering
o Title Search
o Fewer bugs requiring reboot/reset

Things I might add:
Moxi has one more USB port that is NOT enabled.
Moxi interface supports HD, iGuide does not (maybe why it's faster)
6416 has 2 Firewire ports which I believe are active
Moxi has a slightly better search interface
iGuide has record show or series also not as obvious but there
iGuide can force record on this channel only
Moxi has dedicated jump and replay buttons, 6416 needs to be hacked for jump has replay
6416 remote feels better in hand, better button layout.
Moxi DVI, 6416 HDMI
More if I figure it out.
So far so good.
ZippoMan 10-09-06, 04:18 PM Does 6416 have a Grid style layout? Can anyone post a pic of the channel list on a Motorola 6416? Thanks :)
I got my Moxi replaced with a 6416 this morning. Has anyone been succesful in getting the HDMI output to work? How about using an HDMI switch?

I have them all hooked up via HDMI (Monoprice!) and working well! To get into the menu of the 6416 have the TV on the 6416 off and obviously connected and and that input selected on your TV. Press the menu button not power, the config menu appears. Use the arrow buttons to traverse the choices, right to select.
then power off the unit and turn it on normally.

my 6416 is connected via hdmi-to-dvi cable to a mechanical dvi switch (samsung hd-841 dvi dvd player is connected to the same dvi switch). Works like a charm. Couple of my friends commented on outstanding quality of hd stations. And that is despite the fact I previously had E* HD package with Dish-811 receiver. So I am extremely happy with 6416 receiver.
There are some things I find illogical and strange though. When you press DVR you can only see the programs that you've already recorded. You need to press MENU and then click on DVR on-screen icon and then they give you option to see your scheduled dvr recordings. Also, when you are in DVR mode and you erase a recording, you are immediately back in LIVE mode, even if you have no intention of leaving DVR mode. Other than that, so far so good.

I just plugged the HDMI in and it worked. I didn't have to configure it.
So far no problems with the two 6416's I have. I'm enjoying the faster response time when going through the menus. :D My roommate and I love the TV guide grid. The ad at the bottom doesn't bother me. I just ignore it, like I ignore ads on websites. So far not missing Moxi.
Oh and I like how it lets you know how much recorded space (%) you are using on the drive.

Myke,
The percentage left is another item for the list above!
Rare Hero 10-10-06, 04:51 AM I just got my Moxi replaced w/ the 6416. Love the extra space...but I wish the DVR had some better options. A lot of the shows I record re-run a bunch of times throughout the week...but are still considered "first run" by the unit. It'd be nice to just be able to choose a program's true first run air time...and just record that.
My unit was really flakey at first...it took forever to download the schedule. It had a weird problem where you'd get no picture when turning the power on..but if I played a DVR recording, then went back to live, the picture would come back. The audio would cut out sometimes. Saturday it went nuts and just totally froze up. After unplugging it and rebooting, it seems to be OK now. *shrug*
Has anyone noticed an audio pop/click when going in/out of a FF/Rewind on a DVR'd program?
SoopahMan 10-10-06, 07:24 AM Time Warner Cable Announces New Channel Line-Up, Digital
...
To assist customers during this major transition, Time Warner Cable has launched a comprehensive customer communication campaign consisting of television, radio, outdoor and print advertising. Customers also will receive direct mail, bill inserts and email messages to ensure each customer is aware of the myriad changes. What a bunch of marketing nonsense. Posts later in this thread have pointed out that even the information Time Warner did send to some customers is... incorrect! If Time-Warner were to launch anything now to help fix this mess it would be an employee communication campaign - no one knows what the hell is going on over there. I had to call the Office of the President to even get cable hooked up, where I was initially told very convincingly I couldn't get cable from Time Warner. I had to convince them I could.
And you've got to love this:
TIME WARNER CABLE IS BECOMING YOUR CABLE COMPANY.
WE’LL MAKE IT AS EASY ON YOU AS CHANGING THE CHANNEL.Which leads you to a link with a gigantic grid of mish-mashed dates, each with 2 links to 2 separate PDFs, the latter of which belongs in a book titled "How to Communicate Ineffectively: The Million Colored Dots Approach."
From best I can gather I'm basically losing Discovery HD "in the clear." Does anyone know if getting a CableCard compatible tuner resolves this? Is that what's required for every digital channel (even scrambled) to work and does TWC offer that sort of support?
USCsuperfan 10-10-06, 11:19 AM What a bunch of marketing nonsense. Posts later in this thread have pointed out that even the information Time Warner did send to some customers is... incorrect!
I am in Santa Clarita, where previously one half of the city was Comcast and the other half was Time Warner, and each are getting different channel lineups. I was formerly Comcast, but they sent me the info for the old Time Warner customers. In my situation I can understand the mistake since the mailings probably overlapped the former franchise boundaries.
After a day of use, I like the 6416 more than the Moxi. The key difference for me is that it does a much better job of displaying SD on my Samsung DLP HLN567W. This TV does not have a single input that accepts 480i/480p/720p/1080i. Instead, it has one that accepts 480i/480p and two that accept 480p/720p/1080i. This forced me to use the latter and select 720p/1080i in the Moxi video setup. I could not select 480p because my TV stretched the image and I didn't want to hit the Aspect button every time I went from HD to SD. With the 6416, I simply have 720p selected in the menu and 480i override to OFF. This shows all programs in the correct aspect ratio and SD channels look much better.
The only thing that I miss from Moxi so far is a Back button. Is there a similar functionality with the 6416 remote?

That is good to know. I was thinking of getting the Monoprice switch. Did you notice a marked improvement when using HDMI instead of component?

Back button? Which one is that, see I forgot already! ;)
The Moto has a Replay button to jump the program back 15 seconds. (You have to program the 30 second jump button)
It uses the Last button to move back in a menu to the previous menu.
One of these?

I notice it's way faster with HDMI than the Moxi was with DVI. I also notice a bug, that when I turn on the TV for the first time I usually get no sound, I need to change a channel and it returns. Nothing's perfect. This happens on my TVs with only HDMI and a set with HDMI (in DVI mode) with coaxial digital sound going to my amp.

joe221, one other question if you don't mind. How much are you paying for the extra DVR's? I called up TWC this morning and they said a second DVR would cost 16 bucks. This is more than I pay for the first one!

Using rounded numbers, I forgot the exact amount. The regular HD box was 11.50 the 6416 is $14. That's why I got all DVRs. +$2.50 ea was a no brainer.
Is anyone here a pre Adelphia TWC customer w/ Center Ice? If so are you getting any games in HD on a nightly basis?
Is the swap for the Moto box effective for all Santa Monicans?
Has anyone tried transferring the shows from the PVR to the DVHS format?
absolutic 10-11-06, 12:29 AM the only thing i can say about my moto 6416 box that every output is active all the time. That is very nice. I just verified that RF out is working as well, I previously verified that HDMI and component working at the same time. Nice. I hope TWC does not screw it up by some future firmware.
I ordered an HD-DVR 2 days ago to be installed Thursday. The rep told me I'd receive a Scientific Atlanta box (the 160GB version). From brief readings on this forum, there are drawbacks and advantages with the SA Explorer, as with everything. Does anyone around have one and care to comment on its functionality? TIA

yes you should be able to.
obviously you will need to think about your audio: you can for example use optical audio for your first tv and rca audio for your second tv. I kind of wish they had additional rca audio out so I could connect it to a vcr to record audio, like dish network receivers have, but I guess, I cannot have everything.

Actually, I am in a former Adelphia area. Maybe the customer rep had her info wrong. I'll see on Thursday.

You can always use splitters ("Y" cables) on the existing RCA output. I do that with one of my devices (can't remember which one right now) and it works fine.

So I got my hands on a Motorola 6416. Earlier in this thread someone mentioned having to click Menu then scrolling over to get to Favorites Guide. How about a Macro, can the Silver remote be programmed to do this automatically? To make the process of getting to Favorites quicker?
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/How_to_use_a_Motorola_DVR/Programming_the_Remote#Add_a_Macro_Button
I haven't tried it yet, but I don't plan on using the Silver remote. I plan on using my Harmony remote. I'm not sure if you can do Macros on the Harmony, I've never had to do one manually.
What does the "Fav" button do on the Silver Remote anyway? Seems it maybe takes you to the closest Favorite channel? I haven't had this 6416 long, still setting it all up.

Best is to teach the "silver" remote the macro and then teach the harmony that command. BTW when I set up the Harmony for the 6416 it already knew 30 second skip.
Whoops, I misunderstood. The Harmony doesn't do true macros. I thought it was about a quick key that's not on the remote.
Sorry.
SoopahMan 10-12-06, 06:52 PM You can always use splitters ("Y" cables) on the existing RCA output.
This is what I'm doing with my Moto HD box. There are 2 Component outs but only one is enabled. The S-Video is enabled but it needs to use the audio from the one working Component out. So, I Y-split (2M-1M) the audio from the 1 Component out and plugged it in along side the Component in and the S-Video in - letting me watch widescreen, standard, or if I was crazy I guess, both. Both on the same channel though of course.
I think I found the splitters at Target - Best Buy was overpriced as usual and only had one available anyway (ya need 2).

COOL :) :) I never knew the "Advance" command was my Harmony 880 Remote. I see it now. It was hiding on screen page two.
Thanks Joe221 & Fareal . God I love this forum. :D
Anyway, tomorrow will be my first full week with the 6416's . No problems so far. The only function I miss that Moxi and Tivo have is when you fast forward through a show and then hit play button, the Moxi/Tivo would back up a couple of seconds (maybe 5 sec). The 6416 doesn't seem to do that. But it is not a big deal.

An oddity I've discovered (it may be in the Wiki or here, didn't see it) is I tell it to record on "NBD-HD" and it records on the SD channel. :(
I now always set it to Record On This Channel ONLY in the extra settings.
BTW substitute any channel that has both HD and SD.

I'm doing the same thing, i.e'. splitting the audio with Y cables (bought at RadioShack years ago), but it occured to me that an HDMI cable to the TV in combo with component or S-Vid/audio cables may be an option for the open plugs. The top set of plugs aren't for component cables.
Before I buy an HDMI->HDMI cable, does anyone know if that will work?
BTW, TWC delivered a Moto 6416 Phase III to me today, not the SA Explorer a tech rep mentioned when I ordered [and if TWC is listening, the installers need more training especially if you're going to charge $30 to drive over a STB and check the signal strength].

BTW, TWC delivered a Moto 6416 Phase III to me today, not the SA Explorer a tech rep mentioned when I ordered [and if TWC is listening, the installers need more training especially if you're going to charge $30 to drive over a STB and check the signal strength].
TWC doesn't charge for home service, "is that a V12, V13??"
DSperber 10-13-06, 07:49 AM COOL :) The only function I miss that Moxi and Tivo have is when you fast forward through a show and then hit play button, the Moxi/Tivo would back up a couple of seconds (maybe 5 sec). The 6416 doesn't seem to do that. But it is not a big deal. The Moto DVR DOES do this as well!
There are TWO ways to stop the FF function and return to normal play: (1) push the PLAY button (up near the top of the silver remote, just under the "ON DEMAND" button, and (2) push the UP-ARROW navigation button in the cluster of navigation arrow keys in the circular arrangement around OK/SELECT.
If you are in fast-forward mode and you press the PLAY button to return to normal viewing, you will simply continue from where you were when you pressed that button, except in normal speed. And as you suggest, because of human response time you've probably lost 1-3 seconds of content (and then have to back up a bit).
However if you use the UP-ARROW navigation button, you will cause the DVR to backup 1-3 seconds from the instant you push the remote before displaying the program in normal speed. This is what you're looking for, as the DVR's compensation for human response time. And this is what you thought you had lost from MOXI/Tivo. Just use this UP-ARROW key instead of PLAY and you've got what you're looking for.
And this UP-ARROW key is ergonomically located on the remote right near the RIGHT-ARROW which you pushed (perhaps repeatedly) with your thumb to enter the FAST FORWARD mode. Just move your thumb slightly left and up, and push the UP-ARROW, and you're revert to normal playback speed with a 1-3 second automatic backup.
Also, in case you weren't aware of it, the PAGE DOWN button on the silver remote is a built-in instant 15-second rewind function (either for live viewing or during playback of DVR recordings).
DSperber 10-13-06, 07:59 AM So I got my hands on a Motorola 6416. Earlier in this thread someone mentioned having to click Menu then scrolling over to get to Favorites Guide. How about a Macro, can the Silver remote be programmed to do this automatically? To make the process of getting to Favorites quicker? While the silver remote CAN be programmed for macros (actually nothing more than remembering a series of button pushes, and playing them back exactly as recorded), unfortunately there's no guarantee that any specific sequence of button pushes can get to the FAVORITES item on the main menu of the DVR... since your last selection on that main menu is where you will be returned to when you push MENU twice on the remote to enter the main menu.
And if that last selection was not FAVORITES, you will have to insert some extra ad hoc keystrokes (not previously recorded in in your macro, which assumed FAVORITES was where you'd be) in order to get to FAVORITES and then press OK/SELECT.
So while the remote can definitely be programmed for macros, it is the DVR and iGuide design which is at fault here. Obviously, they should have had a direct access "go to my FAVORITES Guide/Grid" function... namely the FAV button on the remote! But they don't.
As you no doubt know, the FAV button is not a request for a Favorites Guide/Grid, but rather a sequential-up tune to your next channel designated as "favorite" from wherever you currently are. And unless you've memorized the list of favorites, you probably won't know what that next channel will be until you see it...and you probably won't even want it! To make matters worse, there's no corresponsing sequential-down tune to the previous channel designated as "favorite", if for some reason that function might have been wanted.
In other words, in my opinion the FAV button is really wasted on the remote. It really should have brought up a FAVORITES Guide but doesn't. That function still must be gotten to only by the multi-click pushing of MENU twice to enter the main menu, then navigate to FAVORITES (if you are not already there), and then press OK/Select.
P.S. - all of these questions and answers for new local LA TWC owners of the Moto 64xx family of DVR (6412 or 6416) who are converting from Adelphia/TWC SA8300 or MOXI boxes, there is a complete dedicated thread for this DVR over in the Recorders Forum: Official 6412/w iGuide thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=464986).
Yes, it's got nearly 9000 posts (because it is several years old) but it has all of the information now being repeated here in this local LA TWC thread. You'll find tips, techniques, insights, and explanations, from long-time owners and users of the 64xx DVR family... from Comcast origins.
DSperber 10-13-06, 08:21 AM An oddity I've discovered (it may be in the Wiki or here, didn't see it) is I tell it to record on "NBD-HD" and it records on the SD channel. :(
I now always set it to Record On This Channel ONLY in the extra settings.
BTW substitute any channel that has both HD and SD."THIS CHANNEL ONLY" is the default setting when you set up a series recording, entered from the red dot icon dialog, entered from the Guide/Grid when pushing OK/Select on some future program. You could not have gotten to record the non-HD NBC (SD channel 4) version of a show that is on both NBC and NBC-HD unless you set up that series recording using the "Search/Title" method using a not-quite-correct procedure, or by pushing OK/Select from the Guide/Grid while looking at the channel 4 row in the channel list instead of 185.
In other words, if you are browsing in the Guide/Grid over the next 2 weeks for some future show on NBC-HD (moving horizontally through time columns, while the NBC-HD channel row is highlighted) and you decide you want to record it as a "series", you just need to put the cursor in that cell and push OK/Select, and navigate to the red dot icon and push OK/Select, and navigate to "create a series recording", and navigate to "record series with these options" and push OK/Select, and then OK/Select to confirm (assuming there are no unresolvable scheduling conflicts). By default you will get a series recording established for THAT CHANNEL ONLY, for that show title.
The only way you can get the wrong channel selected is if you instead decide to program a series recording through the Search/Title method (off of the main menu, entered by pushing MENU twice and navigating to SEARCH, and then naivgating to A-Z Title Search). Now if you then spell your desired show title, and use OK/Select to pick it from the displayed list, and then just simply go over to the red dot icon to start the programming dialog (and then create a series from there), you are doomed if your show on both an SD and HD channel, because the version on the lower numbered channel is actually presented first internally and will thus be selected internally when you push OK/Select to set up your series recording! But this is not the fault of the DVR... it's your fault. You shouldn't have just entered the recording dialog yet, because you want the HD version and not the SD version.
Instead, when you know that your show is on both NBC-SD and NBC-HD, you should navigate not to the red icon but over to the clock icon (show upcoming times) and press OK/Select. You will now see the occurrences on both NBC-SD and NBC-HD. You should then navigate down to the NBC-HD version and push OK/Select (effectively selecting that channel). Now navigate back over to the red dot icon and push OK/Select to create your series recording... and you will be working with NBC-HD as you want, and not NBC-SD as you unwittingly got by default because you neglected to "view upcoming show times" first (which is always necessary when a show is on multiple channels and you want to record the proper one or set up a series recording properly).
In my opinion, except when you don't know when a show is on and thus the Search method is helpful, I always use the Guide/Grid "browse" method to set one-shot or series recordings. That way I am never on a non-HD channel. Plus, it's the same 2 weeks of data, viewed either through the Guide/Grid or searched via SEARCH.
But again, unless you go out of your way to change the default recording option of "this channel only" to "all channels", the only way you can possibly have gotten the NBC-SD version of a show instead of the NBC-HD version is if you set up your recording programming incorrectly... namely from SEARCH and without looking through the list of upcoming show times. Or, if for some reason you were browsing the non-HD NBC in Guide/Grid and set the recording from there.
If you use the HDTV item on the main menu to restrict your Guide/Grid to show only HD channels, and set your one-shot/series recordings from OK/Select on cells in that Guide/Grid which is showing HD channels only, the default of "this channel only" is what you will get... and it will be NBC-HD that you have programmed for.
Having delt with the Moxi, I am VERY cautious about making sure which channel I record on. So, I'm 99% sure I chose 904 or 902 etc. The HD channels. Could I have errored, sure, it's new to me. So now I have gone over each scheduled recording and made sure the Moto is recording on a 900 channel. (at least until November when it'll be a 400 channel. :D So I'll see if it does this again or I screwed up, a distinct possibility. ;) It's a computer and it only does what it's to do, right  ?
"THIS CHANNEL ONLY" is the default setting when you set up a series recording, entered from the red dot icon dialog, entered from the Guide/Grid when pushing OK/Select on some future program. By default you will get a series recording established for THAT CHANNEL ONLY, for that show title.

Why is TWC sending moto 6416 boxes to former adelphia customers and scientific atlanta to others? Which box is better?
DSperber 10-13-06, 03:34 PM Having delt with the Moxi, I am VERY cautious about making sure which channel I record on. So, I'm 99% sure I chose 904 or 902 etc. The HD channels.I'm a former Comcast subscriber, and our channel lineup is clearly different. The HD channels for us are 172-199. So to be honest, I cannot speak firsthand about how a 64xx box may work differently or not in your area, with your different channel numbering system.
But assuming the software in your 6416 is the same iGuide software as is in my 6412 (though at a newer level, to support HDMI instead of DVI, the larger hard drive, etc.) and that the Guide data is provided by TV Guide, there is no way that the software can possibly realize that channel 4 (SD, NBC) is an exact alternative to 185 (HD, NBC) or 90x (in your system area). They are just channel numbers, and if you program channel 185/90x in your recording it cannot just decide to record 4.
At least I don't see how that can be. Certainly can't happen with my 6412, in my Comcast area, with my DVR software and channel lineup. So if you're setting recordings using the Guide/Grid cell method (i.e. pushing OK/Select while navigated to a specific channel/time cell in the grid containing the show/series you want to record, rather than using the Search/Title method and unwittingly choosing the wrong channel implicitly by default from the two alternatives rather than explicitly of the wrong, or right, one) I can't see how such a channel mixup can occur in your programming.
And, just in passing, I (as a Comcast subscriber) STILL still have not received a single piece of mail/literature advising me about any change in service or channel lineup come November 7 (only 3 weeks away) , when according to the TWC web site is when the channel lineup changes are to come for my area. I can see from their web site WHAT I am supposed to be receiving after that date, but only the web site is my source for the new 40x channel numbers for HD.

Well I did get a mailing from TWC about two weeks ago, but according to their website they sent me the wrong information. I guess we'll see this weekend.
FWIW, TW told me today that EVERYONE will be getting the new SA boxes - even those of us who have already (and very recently) switched to the 6416! The customer service reps are not too swift, though, and no one seems to have the same info. I lost a couple of channels switching to TW's pricing plan from my old Adelphia. My bill went down by $10/month, but I lost one channel that I really like and won't get it back until Nov. 8. Bizzare.
WeHoMyke 10-13-06, 07:36 PM The Moto DVR DOES do this as well!

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Just FYI, Time Warner gave me (formerly Adelphia) the black remote. In fact on the black remote there is are "REW" button that backs up 15 sec. But as far as the automatic backup goes, after FF it still only backs up 1 sec, not 3 sec like tivo or moxi did. But like I said, it's not a major deal breaker. In fact my Harmony remote which I use mainlly has a "SKIP" button on it that goes forward 30 sec. Now that is my favorite button. :D
Oh by the way, Mom who is formerly Comcast just had her 6412 traded (died)with a 6416 and they gave her a brand new silver remote. Are former comcast people getting the silver remote and former adelphia people getting the black remote? Just curious.
Thanks again.
Michael
DSperber 10-13-06, 08:15 PM Thanks for taking the time to respond. Just FYI, Time Warner gave me (formerly Adelphia) the black remote. In fact on the black remote there is are "REW" button that backs up 15 sec. Yes, there's also a REW button on the silver remote (counter-clockwise loop/arrow, just to the left of MY DVR button) that backs up 15 seconds as well. However the location of that button is not "ergonomically comfortable" as you hold the silver remote handshake-style. It has to be pushed with your left hand, or lift your right hand/fingers to push it with some right finger.
In contrast, the PAGE DOWN button is on the right side of the silver remote, exactly where your thumb sits when you're holding the remote. So you can just instantly push that button with your thumb in the dark, without having to move anything or even look at it... which is something that would be impossible to actually push the other "official" REW button.
My remote is the 1067A on the left of these remotes (http://www.urcsupport.com/index.php).
Are you saying that the UP-ARROW navigation key does not accomplish what you want, namely (1) return to normal playback speed, and (2) also backup a few seconds from when I pushed the button?
With the black remote, can you use two alternative methods for stopping the FF function and reverting to normal playback speed as I described? (1) PLAY button to just get back to normal speed, but from exactly where it was when you pushed the button, and (2) UP-ARROW button which also backs up a few seconds.
Are you saying that there are NOT these two choices with the black remote?
Oh by the way, Mom who is formerly Comcast just had her 6412 traded (died)with a 6416 and they gave her a brand new silver remote. Are former comcast people getting the silver remote and former adelphia people getting the black remote? Just curious. No idea.
I suspect whatever they have in stock they will give out. There are apparently several black remotes as well as several silver remotes that are all compatible with the Motorola 64xx boxes. I suspect TWC doesn't really care about the remote as much as you might. The Motorola 6416 web site shows yet another black remote (quite different from your Atlas remote).
I would suggest trying to talk them into a trade of remotes, if you can get a silver one and you want it. Offer to go to their office.
They had older silver remotes (pre-6412) from the days of the 6200/6208 non-DVRs that also were usable on the DVRs. I'm sure they might be around as well.
Oh by the way, Mom who is formerly Comcast just had her 6412 traded (died)with a 6416 and they gave her a brand new silver remote. Are former comcast people getting the silver remote and former adelphia people getting the black remote? Just curious.
I'm in a former Adelphia area and got a silver remote yesterday with the 6416.
DSperber 10-13-06, 08:32 PM FWIW, TW told me today that EVERYONE will be getting the new SA boxes - even those of us who have already (and very recently) switched to the 6416! I would say that this is NOT correct.
I just spoke with a very high-up engineering type in TWC management here in LA (whose job is actually to make sure these DVRs work, and who is not responsible for marketing/sales). I've had numerous contacts with him since the TWC/Comcast changeover.
Anyway he said that because of head-end incompatibilities in this older generation of boxes currently installed (pre-OCAP equipment down the road, which will allow great flexibility in the hardware deployed at the user end), that if you're currently in a Scientific Atlanta head-end area (previous TWC) you will stay that way. If you're currently in a Motorola head-end area (previous Adelphia which was MOXI and previous Comcast which was 64xx) you will stay that way. MOXI is a Motorola hardware product built on Motorola infrastructure, which is why they're phasing out MOXI boxes and replacing them with 6416 boxes... but it's still running on a Motorola head-end system.
But you will never see SA boxes replaced with 64xx boxes nor vice versa, because of head-end incompatibilities, at least not for another year at best, until OCAP devices become available which universalizes all of this head-end and user-end connectivity and infrastructure.
DSperber 10-13-06, 09:06 PM Looking at the West LA upcoming list, it appears there are two versions: one for former Comcast subscribers and one for former Adelphia subscribers. The Adelphia HD list is the same as the MDR group shown below. For the Comcast subscribers, there is a different HD lineup which I'm showing below separately.
NOTE: it appears that MDR and WLA Adelphia->TWC subscribers will NOT be getting KTLA-HD (CW). The story is reversed for WLA Comcast->TWC subscribers. Sorry. (Fortunately, I get KTLA-HD OTA so I'm not seriously affected. Also, the only show I watch on KTLA, ANTM, is not in HD so it's again not serious for me.) Just got some confirmation back from my "inside man" at TWC. Turns out they made a mistake on the web site. Turns out the majority of Marina Del Rey is former Adelphia, with only a smaller portion being Comcast. They didn't realize that, and only designated "Marina Del Rey" when there should have been two divisions as they did with "West LA".
So what they currently show as "Marina Del Rey" is actually "Marina Del Rey (former Adelphia)". And what I am really part of as "Marina Del Rey (former Comcast)" is actually shown in the "Playa Del Rey" and "Westchester" areas which were both all Comcast.
And... MUCH TO MY DISAPPOINTMENT... there are no "pink" HD channels in what is coming for me after December 12 (not November 7 as it will be for "Marina Del Rey (former Adelphia)", which is why I haven't received any mailer yet). There will be NO "HD Plus Tier" offered, at least not in this first go-round (unless there is yet another mistake and they really WILL offer "HD Plus Tier" to us former Comcast subscribers).
So in fact, there is NO CHANGE to my HD channel lineup post December 12!!! I will still have KTLA-DT (as will other Comcast users, but no Adelpha and no TWC users), and I will still NOT have HDNet, UHD, etc. (as will no other Comcast users, but which are being offered to TWC and Adelphia users). Comcast users remain with a Comcast channel lineup, and Adelphia/TWC users remain with what they can get today.
In other words... COMCAST SUBSCRIBERS GET NO NEW HD. They only get channel number changes, for the same HD channels they already have. Only "red" on their HD lineup. No "red/pink" expanded HD lineup.
This is VERY disappointing to me, and a bit embarrassing and surprising to my "inside man" at TWC. He is going to get back to me with more details, either as to whether this result was consciously decided, or accidently induced, and if/when we will actually get the new "pink" HD Plus Tier channels.
He had really thought they were trying to produce uniformity throughout all of the regions of LA no matter what cable system you came from, but now sees (since I pointed it out to him) that there appears to be an ongoing segregation of the Comcast subscriber base with them NOT being brought into the "TWC footprint" of channel offerings. Just re-numbering the Comcast area channels does not accomplish what he thought was one of the goals, and he's both disturbed and surprised by what we've now realized.
He will get back to me with more clarification.
DSperber 10-13-06, 10:22 PM He will get back to me with more clarification.Ok... he got back to me with clarification.
And once again, they made what might be considered yet another mistake on the web site. Actually, well maybe it was more of just a wording problem rather than a mistake.
Anyway, the button to put you into the "BEFORE SEPT 18" channel lineups are for the "do nothing" result. If you don't call TWC to make any change to your service, here's what you will get. You'll basically get your existing channels at your existing pricing. For me, Comcast HD channels, Comcast "Digital Platinum" pricing.
In contrast, the "AFTER SEPT 18" is really for truly brand new subscribers to TWC, or for anybody (in any of the TWC, Adelphia, or Comcast subscriber base areas) who would like to scrap their old "legacy" packages and go with new TWC tiers and pricings. And, more importantly for us HD viewers, this path provides access to the newly available HD channel offerings... TO EVERYBODY, no matter where you lived.
So if instead of clicking on the "BEFORE SEPT 18" button (since after all, that's me... I've been a subscriber since before Sept 18, and why would I not choose that button) I instead click on the "AFTER SEPT 18" button (which, of course, makes no sense for my situation)... I would be shown that in the "Marina Del Rey (former Comcast)" area, as with all the other Comcast areas, I in fact WILL be able to CHANGE my service to get the HD Plus Tier channel lineup! In addition, I WILL still have KTLA-DT available as well, because Comcast had a contract with KTLA! Unfortunately, the former Adelphia and TWC users will still NOT get KTLA-DT even if choosing the post-Sept 18 lineups, because TWC did not have a contract with KTLA and never offered KTLA-DT.
This KTLA-DT difference does appear to be the one and only true difference between the "offerings" in the "AFTER SEPT 18" listings for the three subscriber bases. But for the rest of it, the options presented by the TWC tiers and pricings are essentially universal throughout LA and super-attractive (to me, anyway), and also allow me to get the new HD channels I've been looking forward to. Also, if you don't want a "tier" you can opt out of that channel group (mostly meaningful in the SD family of channels).
There is no longer a "Digital Platinum" with TWC, so I'll have to give back StarzHD and MaxHD (no great losses, if you ask me) to save money. But I'll still be able to get HBO+HD and SHO+HD, the Variety, Choice, Sports, and Movie tiers, as well as the new HD Plus Tier (all optional and selectable, at $5/tier), along with my 6412 DVR (with HD locals and HD Basic), for almost exactly what I'm paying today for "Digital Platinum" plus 6412 DVR from Comcast.
So... push the AFTER SEPT 18 button and then the "post lineup" link to see what you will actually be able to get from TWC if you just call them on the phone and reconfigure your monthly service.
ZippoMan 10-14-06, 01:56 PM Just got my Motorola 6416. How can I make the guide full screen (widescreen)? I see bars on the left and right.
Also, I'm using the digital coax but the only audio choices are Mono, Stereo, and Advanced. Am I getting the true 5.1?
So far I'm regretting going from Moxi to the 6416, but I'm sure I"ll get used to it...

DSperber 10-14-06, 04:01 PM Just got my Motorola 6416. How can I make the guide full screen (widescreen)? I see bars on the left and right. The Guide is 4:3 format (unless your TV is "zoom'ed, which makes the 4:3 artificially 16:9). That's just the format.
Also, I'm using the digital coax but the only audio choices are Mono, Stereo, and Advanced. Am I getting the true 5.1? :confused:The audio choices are for analog audio output only. And what you should set there, if you're using the L/R stereo analog audio outputs (e.g. for recording to VCR), is Advanced/Heavy compression/stereo output matrix. This produces an analog audio output level that pretty much matches the digital audio output level.
But the optical/coax digital audio output is totally independent of the analog audio output and these setup options. Digital audio output is always pure, pristine, and unaltered, from the source. Whatever the source, that's what you get on your digital audio output. Levels, DD2.0 or DD5.1, DPL-II, whatever is broadcast in the channel you're watching is exactly what goes out your digital audio outputs. Note that not every channel nor every program is DD5.1, but if it's there... then that's what the box is putting out.
DSperber 10-14-06, 04:08 PM Just got my new 6416....Not bad. Is there a way to remove channels from showing up in my listing? I don't really care whats playing on all 20 of the spanish channels. If you search this thread, back on 9/21 you will find this detailed instructions and description post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8483822&&#post8483822) on how to set up "Favorites".
If you simply press GUIDE you will get the complete channel lineup. But if you set up your desired FAVORITES, then you go into the main menu (press MENU twice), navigate to FAVORITES item, and press OK/Select. You will now be seeing just your FAVORITES. Since the main menu last selected appears already selected the next time you get back into the main menu, the "navigate to FAVORITES item" step is normally unnecessary once you've navigated there once. Then you'll only have to press MENU twice, and then just immediately press OK/Select (assuming FAVORITES is the main menu item pre-selected).
Note that the unknown state of the main menu when you enter it (although it does show the last-selected item still selected when you re-enter) is what prevents a "macro" from being programmed on the remote that is 100% reliable to accomplish the multi-clicks described above.
Sorry for the multi-click inconvenience. That's just the silly way Motorola/iGuide decided to build the interface. I know, it is ridiculous and clearly the FAV button would have been an appropriate single-click equivalent... but it's not.
Just got my Motorola 6416. How can I make the guide full screen (widescreen)? I see bars on the left and right.
So far I'm regretting going from Moxi to the 6416, but I'm sure I"ll get used to it...
On my Mitsubishi DLP I use the "Stretch Plus" setting so SD TV is stretched both wide and tall. In my opinion it's better than the regular wide stretch which makes the picture look silly
I'm not regretting the Moxi to 6416 switch. It is definitely not as pretty, but I'm loving the responsiveness compared to the Moxi and I'm sure I'll love the increased storage once I get to filling it up a bit. As someone else mentioned, it did take close to 48 hours it seems to get all the guide data, that was a bit annoying that I couldn't setup my Series Recordings right away.
DSperber 10-14-06, 04:16 PM Do you know when would we be able to call and change: Nov 7 or Dec 12...?The reason we haven't gotten our mailer yet in MDR is because they screwed up the channel lineups for us, not realizing that MDR is really divided into two parts... former Adelphia and former Comcast (much like several other areas are). So what currently appears (until they fix the web page) as plain and simple MDR is actually "MDR (former Adelphia)", and that will be changing over on Nov 7.
However where you and I live, in what really is "MDR (former Comcast)" is actually the same as the Playa Del Rey, Westchester, and Hollywood listings... and they will be changing over on Dec 12.
The first batch of mailers (for the Nov 7 changeover) went out to the former Adelphia users, not you and I. We former Comcast users will get ours probably in early November no doubt, in time to alert us before our Dec 12 changeover.
I wouldn't think we former Comcast people can call for changes until they actually occur, on Dec 12. I don't believe the sales people even have proper new rate information yet (although we can certainly conjecture, and the billing rep I spoke with last night gave me the "unofficial" numbers for what I will be changing to).
DSperber 10-14-06, 04:25 PM As someone else mentioned, it did take close to 48 hours it seems to get all the guide data, that was a bit annoying that I couldn't setup my Series Recordings right away. This is perhaps the single most frustrating aspect of the 64xx family of boxes. There is absolutely no reason why the data required to populate all time cells for all channels for the next 2 weeks should take more than 10 minutes (or less!).
It is absolutely insane that after a power/re-boot it first takes a long time to get the software re-loaded (so that most functions other than just tuning/watching channels are essentially unavailable for at least 5-10 minutes), followed by a good 2+ days for the Guide data to fill in everything so that you don't see "TO BE ANNOUNCED" scattered throughout the 2 week span (and not just in the final days of the 2 week period as one might expect).
This is truly outrageous, and ridiculous... but we've been living with it for several years now. However as long as you don't have to power/re-boot or experience a power outage or unexpected machine-triggered re-boot, once the 2-week Guide data populates you won't have anything to complain about going forward in "steady state".
And series recording programming "survives" a power/re-boot, so once you get your series recordings programmed you won't have to be concerned ever after. Even if you check within the 2+ days needed for a Guide re-fill and see "TO BE ANNOUNCED", you can be sure that your series recording will be made.
ZippoMan 10-14-06, 08:59 PM What's up with the A-Z Search function? It can't even find any of the main shows I watch - Lost, The Office, etc. My box has been turned on about 8 hours, the guy said it takes 36 hours to "download everything". Is it possible that it is still updating? I have about 15 shows I want to setup for series recordings, I don't even know when 3/4 of them are on to manually find them and set the recordings that way. Help!! :)
ZippoMan 10-14-06, 09:06 PM I just read the post a few above mine, looks like it's probably still getting all the guide data...I'll try in a day or so.
DSperber 10-14-06, 10:32 PM I just read the post a few above mine, looks like it's probably still getting all the guide data...I'll try in a day or so.Just be patient. It'll fill up eventually.
And while you're waiting, here's some suggested reading for newcomers to the 64xx DVR's:
(1) Read this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8483822&&#post8483822) for lots of good information about SEARCH, setting up FAVORITES and limiting your Guide/Grid to just those favorites, programming series recordings, etc.
(2) Read this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8647234&&#post8647234) for further explanation on unforseen consequences when you use the SEARCH method to program a series recording, if you're not careful to ensure that you pick the proper channel (e.g. the HD version) for your series when the show is available on multiple different channels, not all of them HD.
The Guide/Grid programming method is failsafe (since you're looking at the specific channel's row at that moment) and therefore recommended, but the SEARCH method can get you the non-HD version if you don't follow procedures as outlined.
(3) Just because you don't know exactly when a show is on doesn't mean you can't look in the newspaper, or online at TitanTV or Yahoo, or use the Guide/Grid (either for your FAVORITES or limited to HDTV) and browse around each night of the week in the prime time hours where your shows are very likely located. Once you've found an occurrence of your show you can just OK/Select on that cell and enter the programming dialog directly... either for one-shot or series. Failsafe and easy. Note that the "B" button on the remote pages back horizontally, a complete 24-hour period (i.e. one day) and the "C" button pages forward horizontally, a complete 24-hour period (i.e. one day). Very convenient.
(4) Read this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6412716&&#post6412716) to learn how to program your remote for the 30-second skip and the MUTE/UN-MUTE functions. The original "recipe" referenced in that post is from 2005 and is located here (http://archive2.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5327687&&#post5327687).
(5) Read this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8647117&&#post8647117) to learn about the two different methods for returning to normal playback speed after fast-forwarding, and the consequences of using each method.
(6) There are two buttons on the remote that cause a 15-second rewind (both for live and recorded content)... (a) the actual "rewind" button with the counter-clockwise loop and point at the end, just to the left of the MyDVR button on the silver remote, and (b) the PAGE DOWN button which is actually located more conveniently on the silver remote.

ZippoMan 10-16-06, 02:16 AM It's been 36 hours since I turned on my 6416 and I'm still having a heck of a time searching for TV shows to setup my series recordings. Almost none of them show up in the A-Z search. If I advance a day or two to find them that way, the majority of time slots still say To Be Announced. Is this normal?
Annoying that I still can't setup my series recordings.
Mine took closer to 48 hours.
ZippoMan 10-16-06, 02:25 AM Mine took closer to 48 hours.
Ok thanks. If I power down the box with the power button, will it have to reinitialize for ~48 hours or will it remember everything?
DSperber 10-16-06, 04:40 AM Ok thanks. If I power down the box with the power button, will it have to reinitialize for ~48 hours or will it remember everything?Turning it off with the power button (on the remote at least, which is how I turn mine off) simply puts it in standby mode and stops any 30-minute buffering of the channels tuned to by the two tuners to the hard drive. Otherwise, the CPU and other Guide/download functions continue to operate. You won't lose any of the already-retrieved Guide data, or your full two weeks if you get past the "process complete" point. And even when powered off, new data continues to arrive and get stored (for 2 weeks out) as time marches on.
You'll find that as you get closer to that 48-hour breakthrough point the "TO BE ANNOUNCED" cells fill up at what seems like a very rapid rate... for no obvious reason. Why the days are not populated from left to right is not clear, but for some reason all of a sudden "TO BE ANNOUNCED" cells in the very near future suddenly appear filled in with proper program information, though you'd think they would have been among the first to get filled in.
It's really a mystery... both why it takes 48 hours and the manner and technique of how the cells get filled.
Just be patient. Soon you'll be there.
P.S. - did you pick up on the need for programming a MUTE/UN-MUTE for the DVR?
When the DVR is powered off (i.e. "sleeping") and a timer event causes it to power itself on in order to do your recording, it will wake up in MUTE mode (i.e. there is no audio sent out over the analog L/R stereo audio outputs nor over the optical/coax digital audio outputs). This is another "feature" that defies rational explanation and has been discussed for years. Nevertheless, that's how it works.
So if you walk up and turn your TV on, expecting to watch something (either on the other tuner, if available, or perhaps from your MyDVR recording list) you will have no sound.
That's why you need to have a MUTE/UN-MUTE toggle button for the DVR programmed. As delivered from the factory, the MUTE button on the remote is for your TV... not for the DVR.
My recommendation is to program a second unused button dedicated for MUTE/UN-MUTE for the DVR, leaving the real MUTE button dedicated for the TV. That way you can use either of the two buttons with a single-click, to accomplish what you want. Theoretically, you can also program the real MUTE button to be for either DVR or TV, but that requires a two-click sequence (you'll have to push either the TV or CABLE button at the top of the remote first, before pushing the MUTE button, in order to indicate which device you want to MUTE/UN-MUTE). Also, if you push the TV button at the top for the MUTE function, you then are disabling some of the other buttons on the remote which only work when in CABLE mode, so you'll have to push CABLE again in order to reactivate those other buttons. Too confusing and complex.
Just allocate some other unused button for dedicated use as the DVR MUTE/UN-MUTE and leave the remote in CABLE mode all the time.
Finally, if you are using the TV for your audio (fed either via L/R stereo analog or from the HDMI cable) as opposed to an external receiver and speaker system fed from optical/coax digital audio, you should adjust the AUDIO SETUP to have Advanced, heavy compression, and matrix.
Also, if your 6416 DVR has a variable volume adjustment (my 6412-II does not, but I know the 6412-III does so I assume the 6416 does as well) I recommend that you set the DVR's audio level to maximum (using VOLUME on the remote when in CABLE mode) and leave it there. You can then adjust the true volume using your TV remote's volume control, or press TV on the 6416's remote and use its VOLUME control. But remember that if you put the 6416 into TV mode some of the other buttons which are CABLE-only become disabled, and you then need to push CABLE on the remote to get them back.
I know... in my opinion it was ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS for Motorola to add variable audio output to the 6412-III and newer, and not also have a "fixed output level only" setup option to disable it (for those of us who want fixed line-level analog output audio levels). This new arrangement, with VOLUME always tied to TV or CABLE, but other CABLE-mode buttons deactivated when you're in TV mode, makes it very very confusing and aggravating... if you use the VOLUME control on the remote. But that's just my opinion.
P.S. - did you pick up on the need for programming a MUTE/UN-MUTE for the DVR?
Yes, I ran into that on the first or second day. And I also ran into the fact that if you turn on your system (from when the DVR is in off/standby mode) in the middle of a scheduled recording.. when the scheduled recording is complete, the DVR will go back into off/standby mode.
For those two reasons I decided to not use the Power off feature of the 6416. Too much explanation necessary for the rest of the family.
I think I've been running into an issue where no audio comes out of the box at times. Haven't tried to figure it out though since changing the channel usually corrects the issue. This is not the Mute issue though because like I said I'm not using the Power button anymore.
I get the "mysterious loss of sound" problem too. I leave the 6416 on all the time too. Sometimes it happens just while watching, which is annoying. There's always something!
xSm0ker 10-16-06, 02:05 PM This is my Motorola 6416 iGuide vs Digeo 9012 Moxi comparison.
Motorola 6416:
Slow motion
Things I might add:
6416 remote feels better in hand
I disagree. The guide buttons and play/pause buttons are too far away from each other. (EDIT:Black remote)
Overall, after almost two years of using the MOXI, I am much happier with the 6416. Main reasons are guide, additional storage and faster menus.
Is there a way to slow forward with the 6416? I could have sworn my two year old got a hold of the remote and somehow got it to do this, but I can't figure it out. Maybe a DVD was playing at the time.

Pause then FF. Or you could press pause repeatedly to go frame by frame.
yarrumc 10-16-06, 08:47 PM Being a Moxi user, what is the deal with the 6416's? I have been trying to go back in the threads to see how people are receiving them. Is this a model that TW is replacing only from service calls (broken Moxi's) or can we request this new model in exchange for the Moxi?
Thanks.
ZippoMan 10-16-06, 09:06 PM DSperber,
Thanks for all the good info. I figured it wouldnt lose any data since I assumed powering down with the power button made it go into standby mode like you said.
It's been about 60 hours and my unit is still updating but stuff is finally starting to show up. I don't understand why it takes so long to update.
I still don't totally understand the need for UN-MUTE - I never power down my box so will I be okay without an UN-MUTE? I ended up re-programmed my MUTE button so that SHIFT + MUTE performs the DVR UN-MUTE.
I'm using an external receiver so I won't worry about the audio stuff you mentioned.
Thanks again for all the information.

I told TW that my Moxi kept rebooting itself, they replaced it with a 6416.
ZippoMan 10-16-06, 09:10 PM Has anyone compared the Component output to HDMI? I'm currently using Component on my 6416 and the quality looks terrible compared to my Moxi's DVI. My HDMI cable from Monoprice arrives tomorrow, I'm hoping to see an improvement.

Let me/us know if you notice a difference. I am also using component from the 6416 to my 52" Mitsubishi DLP.
And which did you order the 28AWG or 24AWG?
DSperber 10-16-06, 10:05 PM Has anyone compared the Component output to HDMI? I'm currently using Component on my 6416 and the quality looks terrible compared to my Moxi's DVI. My HDMI cable from Monoprice arrives tomorrow, I'm hoping to see an improvement. You need to give details on your HDTV. CRT? LCD? Plasma? DLP? SXRD? D-Ila?
There is zero difference in DVI vs. HDMI from any box, as these are both pure digital video paths. If you were using DVI from MOXI before and were happy then you should use the HDMI connection from the 6416, and you will see identical results. Obviously your HDTV is a fixed-pixel device, and there's no doubt a digital connection to the 6412 is what you want to use, just as it was with the Moxi.
If using the component video path from the 6416 gives you "terrible" results, I submit that the problem is with your HDTV... not with the 6416. The D/A converter in the 64xx boxes is excellent. Apparently the A/D converter in your HDTV is not so great.
I can attest to the fact that with my Sony 34XBR960 (CRT) and my 6412-II there is absolutely zero difference in the video quality displayed from either the component video or DVI connection choices. But that's because the value of digital video connections to a CRT is essentially zero, and the component video output of the 64xx is excellent. In contrast, digital video connections to a fixed-pixel display device in general provide a much superior visual result.
DSperber 10-16-06, 10:15 PM It's been about 60 hours and my unit is still updating but stuff is finally starting to show up. I don't understand why it takes so long to update.I, too cannot imagine what is going on that causes it to retrieve 2 weeks of Guide data so slowly. Is it some unbelievably slow bitrate used for this text information (seems impossible)? Is there some built-in "governor"?
You'd think the Q/A people would have noticed this as well, and complained just like we all have. Oh well.
I still don't totally understand the need for UN-MUTEIt's only needed if you do power your box off when not in use (to prevent over-heating, or wear+tear on the hard drive since when it's powered on both tuners are always continually writing 30 minutes worth of data to the drive).
For no acceptably reasonable reason, the box powers itself on in MUTE mode when a timer recording must be done and it is powered off. And that's why you need UN-MUTE... in case you want to watch something while it's auto-started itself to do a timer recording. To have sound, you need to UN-MUTE.
I never power down my box so will I be okay without an UN-MUTE?Yes, as long as you never turn the box off you will never see MUTE mode on the box.
I ended up re-programmed my MUTE button so that SHIFT + MUTE performs the DVR UN-MUTE.This is a good double-click alternative to a second dedicated single-click button, because it does not involve using the TV or CABLE buttons (which changes the mode of the remote) plus MUTE.
I'm using an external receiver so I won't worry about the audio stuff you mentioned.Correct. The digital audio output is totally unaffected by the Audio Setup values, which are specifically for analog audio output.
ZippoMan 10-16-06, 10:31 PM You need to give details on your HDTV. CRT? LCD? Plasma? DLP? SXRD? D-Ila?
Well I take that back, the quality isn't terrible, the HD channels just don't seem as sharp. If DVI through my MOXI is 100%, I'd give the 6461 through Component an 85%. It's a Westinghouse 42" 1080p LCD, the chipset is supposed to be excellent.
ZippoMan 10-16-06, 10:32 PM And which did you order the 28AWG or 24AWG?
I only needed a 6-foot cable, and since a digital signal is a digital signal, I went with the cheaper/thinner 28AWG HDMI cable.
Time Warner Crunches the Numbers
The cable firm aligns its channels as it begins the challenge of integrating Comcast and Adelphia.
By James S. Granelli, Times Staff Writer
http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-cable17oct17,0,826723,full.story?coll=la-home-business
October 17, 2006
Sharon Levy saw a cooking show about pizza recently and figured her mother would like to watch too. So she picked up the phone and told her mom to tune in to the Food Network.
But the two missed the segment because they spent so much time figuring out which channel on Levy's cable system in Sherman Oaks corresponded to her mother's in Hancock Park.
"She would say, 'Where's the Food channel?' And I'd say 55," Levy said. "But Channel 55 on her system is the History Channel. So we'd go through all the numbers until we found it."
That sort of cable confusion is about to end across much of Southern California as Time Warner Cable today starts integrating systems formerly operated by Comcast Corp. and Adelphia Communications Corp.
Tops on the list: a consistent channel lineup. After the six-week rollout is complete, Animal Planet, for instance, will be on Channel 216 for Time Warner's 1.9 million customers spread from Ventura to Newport Beach to Hemet.
The channel alignment and other major changes come as Time Warner becomes the first company to control such a large swath in Southern California — the last major metropolitan area to have its fragmented cable market consolidated.
It began last summer, when Time Warner and Comcast bought out Adelphia and then swapped local franchise systems to give each other a bigger presence in their markets. Comcast pulled out of Southern California, and Time Warner left Northern California.
Locally, Time Warner wants to cut deep into satellite television's biggest market and capture new customers before phone giants AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. roll out their own competing pay TV products.
"Verizon is going to spend a lot of money; there's heavy marketing from Dish and DirecTV," said Jerilyn Kessel, a Los Angeles strategic marketing consultant. "Time Warner needs to satisfy customers in what will be an increasingly competitive environment."
Time Warner has been working to improve its customer service, which industry analysts say has been getting better. But satellite still leads all cable companies in TV customer satisfaction, according to surveys by J.D. Power & Associates.
Time Warner has deployed 1,200 new agents in five Southland call centers to handle complaints, service changes and other local customer issues. The channel changes alone will test those agents as people get disoriented and frustrated over the new lineup.
"We have to do this in stages because it's going to generate a lot of customer calls," said Jeffrey A. Hirsch, Time Warner's Southern California president.
Time Warner does not expect that customers will lose any service as the company consolidates TV, Internet and phone operations of the three companies onto one platform, spokeswoman Patti Rockenwagner said.
"There's nothing that we're doing that we know would cause a temporary loss of any service," she said.
An outage Monday prevented former Adelphia customers nationwide from getting e-mail on their Adelphia.net accounts for more than six hours, though they could otherwise surf the Internet and use other e-mail accounts, Rockenwagner said.
The outage was caused by an equipment failure in a former Adelphia office in Pennsylvania, she said. No former Comcast customers were affected.
Consolidating three systems is difficult, experts said.
"How long it takes Time Warner depends on the size of the market and the technologies involved," said Bob Scherman, editor and publisher of Satellite Business News, a trade publication. "Can Time Warner continue to take advantage of the big territory while it's trying to consolidate operations? That's the question."
Time Warner also is working to bring out uniform pricing, uniform high-speed Internet plans and uniform telephone service, as well as such free add-ons as caller ID on the TV screen and its proprietary "start over" service, which enables customers to restart any show they tune into late.
"We're tailoring many of our products from what our customers tell us they want, not from what our competitors do," Hirsch said. But he acknowledged that "competition forces us to innovate."
Kessel, for one, is a skeptical customer.
"When I called four weeks ago, I still got the same Adelphia people in an Arizona call center," she said.
"And my video on demand still doesn't work."
The stakes are high as satellite companies lure cable customers with promises of better pictures and lower prices. That migration has slowed somewhat in Los Angeles over the last year, according to statistics provided by research firm CentrisBridge.
"Geographic consolidation is providing benefits, but all the benefits are going to the operator, not the consumer," Kessel said. Time Warner is saving money in combining networks and creating efficiencies, but prices aren't falling, she said.
"We're able to deliver what Time Warner can't: all digital programming, all NFL games, more high-definition channels, a superior digital video recorder and the top company in customer service," said Brad Bentley, DirecTV's marketing director.
Even the much touted triple play of voice, video and high-speed Internet access doesn't faze Bentley. Dish and DirecTV have agreements with the nation's major phone companies to provide voice and Internet in a bundle — at least until the phone companies can deliver pay TV themselves.
"This isn't the first time we've been in a market when it was hit with one big cable provider," Bentley said.
Verizon offers TV programming over newly installed fiber-optic lines in eight Southern California cities, including Ontario, Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach. AT&T has yet to launch its TV service outside of San Antonio, where it is based, and Houston.
"Even where cable is taking away phone customers, we've been able to — and will be able to — win them back with our triple-play package," Verizon spokesman Jonathan Davies said. "People really do recognize the difference between fiber and cable."
More important, Kessel said, is to get more customers on digital TV service. It is the digital system that is needed to provide video on demand, high-definition TV, digital video recorders and the start-over service. Plus, digital services give cable companies the flexibility to counter offers from satellite.
"Cable has to hold on to the customers it has," she said. "It's much harder to get a lost customer back than to keep a customer. They need to close the floodgates, then get each customer to spend just a little bit more."

DirecTV, NFL Network Going Deep
By Mike Reynolds 10/16/2006 12:04:00 AM
DirecTV and NFL Network are planning a major marketing blitz for Time Warner Cable subscribers.
The direct-broadcast satellite service will team up with the 41 million-subscriber network to run a multimedia, multimillion-dollar ad campaign in four Time Warner and Comcast markets not carrying the National Football League’s cable service.
The NFL Network ad blitz is part of an eight-market DirecTV acquisition campaign launched this past August targeted at siphoning subscribers in systems recently consolidated by Time Warner and Comcast.
DirecTV’s cable-consolidation campaign -- which offers $150 rebates to subscribers ditching cable -- has already yielded double-digit subscriber-increase percentages, according to vice president of acquisition marketing Brad Bentley.
Beginning Thursday, DirecTV and NFL Network will run radio ads and place ad inserts in major newspapers within the Buffalo, N.Y.; Dallas; Cleveland; and Los Angeles markets touting the satellite company’s carriage of the channel, which includes the network’s eight-game Thursday and Saturday package.
Time Warner has yet to reach a carriage deal for NFL Network, saying that it wants to carry the service on a sports tier. NFL Network officials are demanding carriage on highly penetrated analog-basic tiers.
“We’re just letting customers know that they do have a choice and we do carry the NFL Network,” Bentley said. “They’re not at the mercy of the cable company.”
NFL Network’s message will be combined with DirecTV’s overall acquisition campaign that has been running in those markets since August. That campaign also includes the Washington, D.C.; West Palm Beach, Fla.; Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Minneapolis markets.
“We’ve seen a lot of movement and, now, they have added reason to switch because they’re losing channels like NFL Network,” Bentley said. “Historically, these transitions have not gone smoothly and work to our advantage, so we hope to continue to see good growth momentum.”
Bentley would not speculate on whether operators will secure deals for NFL Network’s Thursday/Saturday package before the first game Thanksgiving night.
NFL Network spokesman Seth Palansky said the network expects to get good traction from the campaigns. “Ultimately, we prefer to have deals with cable operators, but our obligation is to our fans,” he added.

Any idea why this happens? It seems totally ridiculous that it loses all its program information just because of a power loss. It *does* have a hard drive, right?

Yeah sounds crazy. But at least it continues to record the scheduled items according to DSperber's previous post.
I'm in San Dimas and my evening reception has gone to hell in the last 3 days. My Panasonic 8UK is not near even 200 hours yet and I'm getting splotches that flash on and off all over the screen on about about 35-40 channels I flipped through last night. I'm the only one with access to the remote that tweaks the TV, and I've changed nothing. Hell, I had to turn it off and just pray that it was the end of a bad day. It's never happened before.
Is Anyone else experiencing this during this Adelphia/Time Warner transition? Thanks beforehand.

xSm0ker 10-18-06, 02:57 PM My lineup was switched over to the new and improved lineup yesterday. Seemed to go very smoothly. I got home and all of my 9XX channels were recording on 4XX. My 3 new HD channels showed up fine. No surprise, but the MOXI had downloaded all program data for the new channels before I got home. The 6416 didn't finish until this morning. Anyway the new HD channels are Universal HD, Starz HD and some HD Special Events that shows Off the air. I now have 19 HD channels.

Tivo series 3 will not work with any channels that are running Switched Digital Video. It is believed TWC is implementing SDV as part of the upcoming conversions.

TIVO needs to support Multi-Stream Bidrectional CableCARD (M-CARD) to be compatible with TWC in the future.

I was under the impression that they were going to use that for VOD and PPV only. I really thought I read that they understand they have to support non-SDV devices for quite some time to come. Did i get this wrong?

USCsuperfan 10-18-06, 07:00 PM Ok... he got back to me with clarification.
This is good information. My situation with HD changes alot. ESPN HD is not automatically included with digital cable in the new setup, but the HD Tier that includes ESPN HD also includes another 5 HD channels that I do not currently get (Universal HD, INHD 1 & 2, HDNET and HDNET Movies). Also, I thought the mailer that TWC sent me was wrong because I had checked the website when the link was first posted in this thread. It turns out that it has been updated on their site since then and my channel lineup as a former Comcast sub will now resemble the channel lineups that original TW subs had (and will continue to have) in Santa Clarita. This change is now pushed back by 2 weeks too. I consider this good news.
Marc Alexander 10-18-06, 07:21 PM I was under the impression that they were going to use that for VOD and PPV only. I really thought I read that they understand they have to support non-SDV devices for quite some time to come. Did i get this wrong?

SDV mimicks the system used for VOD, but can apply it to all the digital stations and PPV on which frees up substantial bandwidth.

ZippoMan 10-18-06, 08:40 PM I'm trying to schedule series recordings for LOST and Biggest Loser, they are both on tonight at 9PM. I added the LOST series recording fine, but when I try to add Biggest Loser it's telling me that it will not record Biggest Loser because I also have LOST schedueled. WTF? This thing can record two channels at once right? What's the problem?
EDIT: I think it may be because I have Southpark starting at 10PM and it's trying to run the recording until 10:01...i'm going to fool around with it
So I can't make Southpark start at 10:02, and I can't get LOST or Biggest Loser to end at 10:00 exactly, anyone know a work around? I changed the DVR Priority so that Southpark is BELOW Biggest Loser and LOST but now it says South Park won't record - will it not record the entire show or just miss the first minute?

This is one feature I like better about MOXI. The 6416 will not allow you to stop recording early or begin recording late to solve problems like this.

I thought the 6416 did allow this? I am pretty sure I noticed it in Series Recording options.. all options, advanced, more, whatever its called. Assumed it would be in the settings for the individual show as well.

You can start recordings early and end recordings late, but you cant start recording late or end recordings early.
So does anyone know if it will completely cancel the Southpark recording or will it just not record the first minute?
billiam 10-18-06, 10:52 PM I'm in Playa Vista and recently got a Fusion USB tuner. I hooked it up to cable and did a scan, and got NO channels at all. I can tune to the HD locals on my Comcast provided box, its not HD, but I can HEAR the audio. Am I missing something? I figure I at least get the HD locals. Luckily, I can pull in all the major networks OTA, but still. Anyone else in the area have similar or different experience?
DSperber 10-19-06, 12:29 AM So does anyone know if it will completely cancel the Southpark recording or will it just not record the first minute? You can't set up timer recordings that require THREE tuners. Any such situation (because of those ridiculous and very irritating one-minute start early/late tricks used by ABC mostly, seemingly to confound DVR's and force people to prioritize the ABC shows) results in an "unresolvable conflict" that the 64xx box does not allow you to resolve in any way "on the fly", i.e. while still within the recording programming dialog. It will simply not allow you to complete that third programming activity. And if the three programs were successfully pre-secheduled because they were not in conflict when you first programmed them, but then were conflicting "dynamically" one week because of irregular scheduling that week, my guess is that the lowest priority series gets shafted totally, at least that week. That's the resolution.
During programming there's no way to resolve this three-tuner conflict, even if you're outside of the dialog that's underway. If you need three tuners you can't do it. And if that's caused by network scheduling craziness, well them's the breaks... at least with the 64xx.
If your third program is on HBO or SHO where you have numerous later options throughout the week, well that's your resolution. But if it's three network one-time-only shows all on at the same time on the same night, well you're doomed... unless you have an OTA alternative or two DVR's.
And, I might add... South Park is on numerous times throughout the week. You don't have to get it on Wednesday night only. Why not program it for some other one-time recording (as opposed to a series) on any of the other nights during the week when it replays?
jeffs471 10-19-06, 12:39 AM I'm trying to figure out what my bill might be.
Base service (44.95) + DVR service (15) + HD Plus (Is this included or extra) + additional DVR ($$$ how much) + Road Runner Standard (44.95) - 5 discount for two services = ?????
I see in very fine print on the website something about "DVR service fee ranges from 4.96 to ?.95 per month" where does this apply?
Basically I just want
2 HD recievers
HD Plus tier
Road Runner standard

dylan24 10-19-06, 04:42 PM I just upgraded on TW's new channel line-ups. But if the talked about Digital Navigator product is OCAP-based (i.e. deployable on all hardware/infrastructure platforms, sort of like a Java app), and Diana says it will be deployed by end-of-2007, then that is consistent with what my source said. We're probably all talking about the same software, and it's 12-18 months away. Not next month for anyone.
Anything (if anything) upgraded before then will no doubt continue to be platform-specific.
But I will check in next week and maybe get a more definitive perspective from west coast TWC, in our Moto area.

This same thing happened to me when Comcast took over. I could keep my old lineup, and pricing, but I wouldn't be able to upgrade to any of the new channels. Once I upgraded to "Comcast" pricing, more money, fewer channels, and I got the new HD channels. I am sure it will be the same thing here. I currently have the Comcast Platinum package, which TW doesn't offer. I may have to give in, again. and give it up, fewer channels, more money, if I want any of the newer channels. I also change over to TW on the 24th, I'll give them a call after that and see what they say. Same old games. What's TW's slogan, "The Power of You." Yeah right.
I'm in Arcadia which supposedly is to be turned to the new TWC structure on 12/19. I wanted a DVR and called support who was happy to send over a unit and change whatever options were leftover from Adelphia. TWC's packages are confusing to me, Adelphia's were straightforward, so I'll be calling them back soon to modify things again.

I wonder if this explains what I'm now seeing when I download program/guide info into my MCE05 media PC, i.e. a lot of stations are now listed as "shared." The 902-971 block, for example, shows many of the old HD network stations being "shared" with digital music stations.
I live in Los Feliz (Eagle Rock office), but had always had to select, with Adelphia, West LA as my area, since Eagle Rock was not listed. This same situation remains with TW. Our transition isn't until next week, but I thought the sharing was some sort of transitional stage. Maybe not. At any rate, it's definitely confusing MCE. :(

When you check the channel line up when you click on installed before September 18,, 2006, you don't get certain HD channels like HD Universal and HDNet.
I've had Comcast for a few years, so does this mean that since I am not a new customer, I will be stuck with a channel lineup that does not have these? If I want that, I have to resubscribe? I'm confused.
I would appreciate it if someone could let me know.

I've had no problems to speak of in a week's time. I'm impressed by the speed of menus and channel changing, too. Compared to the Moto6200, the 6416 III is lightning fast. For the most part, I'm quite happy with the STB.
Pye in LA 10-21-06, 03:40 PM I'm a former Adelphia customer driving a Samsung-HLR with a MOXI box. My TV input is fed by digital cable and tuned by the Sammy. This set-up provided me with data for the onscreen TV Guide feature of the Sammy display.
Since the TW takeover, though, I can't get any TV Guide data to load. I've re-initiated set-up a couple different ways , each time giving it days to populate the grid...nothing.
Gotta be TW/TV Guide business issue, right?
Marc Alexander 10-21-06, 05:45 PM TV guide OSD gets it data from analog stations (PBS and CBS carry the data I believe). I opted for cable card over set top box based on a recommendation from someone on the XBR2 owner's forum. Has anyone noticed any difference in picture quality - particularly HD - between cable card and the TW set top box?
I'd like to add the TW DVR but don't want any decrease in signal quality.
Is there any way to keep the cable card and then have TW put in the DVR and run it through a separate input?
The 5.1 channel sound (cable card to TV/digital optical out to receiver) is also excellent. Is there a digital optical out from the set top box/DVR that will provide the same sound quality?

DSperber 10-23-06, 05:59 PM I received the new lineup without having to call TW and change my package.I'm not sure what you're saying. Who was your previous provider... Adelphia? Comcast? TWC? Is your pricing exactly the same as it was, or somewhat different? Do you have exactly the same channels, or did you lose or gain channels? What??? We'd like some more details from you, as to what happened to you without a call to TWC.
Yes, there will be SOME lineup for all three of us types of customers after the changeover date, which may or may not be slightly different from what it was before, and which may or may not be priced equivalently or similarly. I don't know personally because my Comcast-area changeover isn't scheduled until mid-December and we have not been sent any mailers and details yet.
But based on the web site, there are definitely TWO different sets of lineups available to me... one providing a "legacy-type" service with almost (or exactly) identical channels and pricing as what I had before, and a second providing a "scrap what you had before and go with new TWC tiers and pricing". I'm sure it's the same for all of us.
For example, there is no longer a "Digital Platinum" from TWC as there was from Comcast, but TWC is essentially grandfathering in the channel lineup and pricing if I want (at least I expect that will be the package they offer me). However I will not have access to the new HD channels which are available in the new HD Plus Tier... unless I reconfigure to the new TWC package/price offer.
yarrumc 10-23-06, 08:21 PM Not sure if this is the right place for it-- but any help or direction is greatly appreciated. I tried doing a search but couldn't fine anyting compatible. I just purchased a Harmony 880--will Iinccur any problems being compatible with my MOXI? Any tips that may be useful when set up time comes (should be here by Friday)?
As always, thank you. You guys have been great in helping in the past !
I have had a couple harmony remotes (currently 720) and Moxi works fine with them. I did add the 'Next' option to the Activity menu, since there doesn't seem to be any default button mapping for it.

I thought that if you were interested and had missed this humble invitation, it may be worth your while on a Saturday afternoon.

I'm not sure what "fix" you're talking about -- if there is one, I'd love to hear about it! The Moxi menus definitely act more sluggishly with the 880. But not so much that I'm willing to go back to more than one remote. But whenever I use the true Moxi remote, I'm reminded again of the difference.

It's the Moxi that's slow. You can tweak the 880 to tune it quicker, but nothing short of new software in the Moxi will make it any faster. It's on the way... :p

I think you misread the above offer. It is actually not me doing this. It is Thomas.
He should receive all the kudos from people for the time, effort, etc.
For those that are all interested and want a better handle on the exact location, think a tad east of San Dimas (if I still remember my geography). :)
dylan24 10-24-06, 11:58 AM My channel line up changed today but I'm not getting all the channels I signed up for. Some channels either show the "Not Available" message, or "Subscription Required" message. I didn't check them all but they were some of the new HD channels, NBA TV, Starz, and also the Golf Channel which is odd because this is supposed to be on basic cable now. Anyone else having the same issues?
JohninLA 10-24-06, 12:25 PM I am also scheduled for channel updates today. I have questions regarding TWC packaging, and called them for help, but keep getting the "Sorry, we are too busy right now, call back another time" message from their sales office. hmmm, "The Power of You" at work I guess.
So, if anyone here knows and can help, I'd appreciate it. I wrote above of my experiences with Comcast, and having to switch out of their "grandfathered" packages to get the newer channels. I currently have the Platinum package from Comcast. I'm interested in getting the HDNet channels, but they don't show on my channel lineups. They do show up under TWC's Digital Tiers in the brochure they sent me. If I give up my Platinum package, can I pick the different "tiers" listed, and will they then be available in my area?
I tried all the "Pre Sept 18" and "Post Sept 18" lineups on their website, but they are both the same. HDNET doesn't show up on either. Before I give up my current package and find out those channels are still not going to be available, does anyone know if all the Digital Tier channels will be available, in ALL areas if you switch over to TWC's Packages? Or are there still differences in packaging depending on areas?
Also, when the channel line up does occur, when do they do it? I expected it to be during the night last night, but it didn't happen.
Thanks for any help!
Well I called this morning to make sure the line up I want rolls in on Nov. 7th. What a CROCK! My bill is going UP $8 actually more like $20 given constand deals from A* and I am LOSING Showtime and a bunch of channels in the Movie Tier I'm not taking but currently have many of those channels.
THE POWER OF YOU? Feh. I Think D* or E* are now competitive to TWC which was NEVER the deal with A*.
Time to shop!

Same here (Los Feliz - Eagle Rock office). HBO-HD, SHO-HD, ESPN-HD, ESPN2-HD all show the "Will be available shortly" screen. Other HD stations (HDNet, Disc-HD, INHD) are coming in fine. If it doesn't sort itself out by the time I get home from work, I will call.
Another problem is that when I try to update my media PC's guide, as usual, Eagle Rock is not listed (never has been). I was using West LA as the source, but, since the channel changeover doesn't happen there until supposedly next month, I had to hunt around various SoCal locales to find a source that has already changed. Finally found that Boyle Heights (listed as East LA) works. :(

I'm in the same area bruce, so it seems like a system problem, and not problems with each individuals' accounts. Is it too much to ask to have the change-over without any glitches? It's not like they haven't had months to prepare for this. And, of course, as noted above, they don't seem to answering the phone right now, either. What a joke.
bruce73 10-24-06, 07:51 PM Hey, Dylan, just got home and everything's up and running. You good?
markt170 10-25-06, 12:37 AM TW's call center has an outgoing message that says they're aware of the problem with the channels not matching, and they "hope" to have it fixed by 6 am. In the meantime, my scheduled program tonight (The Unit) did not record.
dylan24 10-25-06, 02:13 AM Hey, Dylan, just got home and everything's up and running. You good?
Still missing some channels like Universal HD, Starz HD, Golf Channel, NBA TV and others. TW says they should be up by tomorrow, but, at this point, who knows.
It seems they've killed off all the local HD qam feeds. Everything is encrypted now.
I've called in twice now, but so far the CSRs/front liners have no idea what I'm talking about. I'll try again in the morning, hopefully I can find someone there who's at least heard of QAM.
If I have to start shopping for rabbit ears, I'm gonna be really annoyed. I'm paying for service I can't use, and my DVR is sucking air.
Marc Alexander 10-25-06, 03:58 AM Unencrypted local HD QAM feeds are still active here in Garden Grove. We switched to the new lineup Monday. Our transition went without a hitch (but we are legacy TWC).
I am in the west valley coverage area. It's been working fine for the last 18 months at least, until monday.
Well, got them on the phone this morning, eventually. Lines were overloaded.
The rep thought qam was a tv receiver manufacturer. Said to "call QAM and ask if they can unencrypt it for you."
I gave her a brief primer on QAM256, and sent her off to find someone who had heard of it. Eventually I find out it was done on purpose, allegedly to stop people from "stealing the signal". errg,ok.
Fallback position, 1394. I asked if they were setting 5c on the broadcast channels over the firewire port. She had heard of firewire, and once she made the connection between 5c and encryption realized she couldn't tell me if it was flagged or not. I made it as far as confirming the port is active on my box, but it would be a lot of work for me to find out if the channels are in the clear.
I am annoyed, to put it mildly.
markt170 10-25-06, 04:23 PM Channel line up on the Moxi was fixed this morning as promised.
twelvepbrs 10-25-06, 06:56 PM has anyone here had any luck getting ESPN2 HD who didn't previously have it? it's not listed in my new channel lineup even though i have been assured that it was coming, i look forward to calling and complaining my way every month until they carry it (should get me the rest of the HD tier for free)
dylan24 10-25-06, 07:51 PM Back home from work and still don't have all my channels. Bruce73 and/or others in the Los Feliz/Eagle Rock area, can you check if you're getting Golf Channel, NBA TV, Universal HD, Starz HD, Encore Drama.
Check channels - 78, 262, 285, 419, 429. There are some other channels missing as well but I won't list them all.
bruce73 10-25-06, 11:09 PM Dylan, I'm getting 78 (Golf), but none of the others. But, AFAIK, the others are all subscription services that I'm not signed up for anyway.
sakaike 10-26-06, 10:09 PM I lucked into a pricing promotion earlier today and thought I would pass this along. First, some background - I've been an Adelphia customer for about 5 years. I've been a relatively high dollar customer: bundled Internet and Gold AdvantagePak - total monthly bill around $134 a month. About 4 months ago, I followed the advice of another poster, and called Adelphia threatening to quit unless they offered some sort of "retention offer." They offered to upgrade my cable TV to include every channel they offer, plus the Internet for a total of about $110 for three months. I said fine. That offer recently expired, so I called TWC today to drop some premium channels to bring my monthly bill down. During that conversation with a very patient CSR, I got an education in the new versus old pricing plans, and a new promotional pricing plan.
Although I'm a longtime customer, for the purposes of obtaining my promotional pricing, they classified me as a "new" TWC customer. As a result, I'm going to get the same full boat of channels I have now plus Internet for about $122 a month for the next six months. After that, it will go up to the new TWC pricing of about $160 a month. Of course, at that time, I'll be giving them a call back to see what they can do for me.
There's two points to make here. First, if you're lucky like me, there is an opporturtunity to get a TWC promotional rate. Second, for high dollar customers, the pricing plans from TWC are a bit higher compared to the current Adelphia plans. As it was explained to me, the prices for baseline (analog, digital basic, one or two boxes, etc.) services will be the same under the TWC plans (compared to Adelphia). Prices for "moderate" packages around $70-$90 per month may see a few dollars cheaper under the TWC plans. But when you start getting into the upper dollar ranges, TWC plans will be much more expensive.
If you're one of these people, you may be better off keeping your Adelphia pricing for as long as possible. However, as soon as you change your subscription in any way, you will automatically be transitioned into the TWC pricing plans. Since I plan to add ESPN-HD on November 14, when it becomes available in my area for the first time, I decided to move to the TWC pricing now, since I was offered that new customer promotion.
I know this post reads like mush, so if anyone has a specific question related to the transition and you don't want to wait an hour on hold to get to a CSR, I'll try to do the best I can (and not give out misinformation). I literally spent about 45 minutes on the phone with this very helpful CSR, and only posted a fraction of what was discussed in that conversation.

I'm in Echo Park (Eagle Rock service area) Same here, called a CSR before I saw this post, and they pinged my S3 TiVo but it did nothing. CSR set up a service call, which I will now cancel and just wait patiently with everyone else. tick. tock. tick. tock.
jgeorges 10-26-06, 11:47 PM FWIW: As a former Adelphia customer, I received a mailing today from TW announcing their new packages. When I called TW for details, I was advised to keep my Moxi for the time being. Yes, their replacement DVR would have twice the recording capacity, but they're having software problems that are keeping their tech support people hopping. I gather that those problems include some having to do with scheduling recordings.
They also suggested waiting until mid-November to make the transition to a new package. They are having problems in my area (LA County South Bay) delivering some of the HD channels and would prefer not to make a change that would cost me the use of those channels for a week or two.
dylan24 10-28-06, 08:33 PM For those in the Eagle Rock service area (Los Feliz/Echo Park et al.), here's an update. TW service came out. Apparently some of the channels we are not getting may be disappearing completely - these include channels 133-136, 183, and 270. There's still no adequate explanation as to why no Golf (78), Encore Drama (285), Universal HD (419), and Starz HD (429).
The sense I get is that TW is still in flux as to what channels they will eventually be carrying. Of course, you would think they would figure this out before mailing out new channel line-ups and then making the switch over on Oct. 24.
On a positive note, NBA TV did 'appear' a couple of days ago.
bruce73 10-28-06, 09:43 PM Dylan, is UniversalHD a separate subscription, or does it come bundled with other channels? Starz is bundled with CinemaxHD, I believe, as I canceled those to save a few bucks.
What about the repeated stations I'm seeing? I can understand the repeating of some SD channels and their digital counterparts, but I'm curious to know why there are repeated stations in the 100 and 200 blocks (e.g. Sundance, TCM), as well as double HBO-HDs and SHO-HDs.
What about Golf (265)? Are you receiving that?
jeffs471 10-28-06, 11:14 PM wow so much value with TWC, not.
Everything went up in price. Am I understanding it right that I have to pay a fee for dvr rental 8.95 + dvr service fee 9.95? Thats 20 bucks.
I just got the mailer where they show old and new prices and I'm not understanding how they consider this to be cheaper for any level customer.

Bruce, Universal HD is available with the HD tier, so you should be getting this. Starz is a premium subscription so you will not be getting this.
The repeated stations is TW's system to get all similar programming close to each other on channel blocks. That's why Golf is on 78 and also on 265 (near the other sports channels). And, no, I'm not getting Golf on either 78 or 265.

I can only speak in generalities since each person's current pricing depends on where you live and who provided you service before the changeover. In addition, with the re-segmenting of channels into various tiers, an apples to apples comparison is virtually impossible.
The way it was explained to me is that if you are a baseline customer who only orders Basic Cable, your bill should be essentially the same, as the channel line-up and pricing isn't changing much in this tier (although the channel numbers are changing quite a bit).
As you add a few options, the net price should be a few dollars cheaper than the old equivalent Adelphia pricing plan. But this only works if the channels you want to watch just happen to coincidentally all belong within the same tier. For me, this doesn't work, because I happen to watch a couple of stations heavily in each tier, and thus need/want to have virtually all tiers. Consequently, I'm driven to sign up (and pay) for several tiers to get half a dozen channels I want, and dozens of channels I care nothing about. For people like me, the net price of switching over results in a much higher monthly bill, which is why I was happy to get the promotional package that I did. I might be one of those people that would benefit from "a la carte" pricing, but since that'll never happen, the point is really moot.
I'm hoping that by the time my six month promotion period is over, Verizon FIOS will have made its way to my section of North Redondo Beach.
I don't have a TWC DVR, so I can't tell you if those two fees are for real, but it certainly doesn't sound right.

By HD tier, I'm assuming the HDNet, InHD, ESPN tier. And I'm not getting UHD. Hmmm... Am I missing anything? Or is it mostly filler, like I see with InHD?

That's right. You should be getting it. As far as the programming, I'm not sure - they seem to show a lot of movies.
dogbliss 10-29-06, 09:20 PM Could someone be kind enough to tell me how the TWC channel change will effect me. I live out in Oxnard and at the moment I get every channel, all the standard HD channels, (although not Cinemax HD because of some stupid lame reason for us Oxnard people) I pay for ESPN HD and I have the high speed internet.
I have not called TWC to make any changes yet.
My question is:
When the change happens on Nov 16, will I be getting all the new channels, the HD channels I get now and all the new HD Channels?
And, since I am paying for ESPN HD now, will I get that along with the other HD channels that will come in the sports package? (or any other special HD channels I do not get now)
Lastly, if I don't do anything, and wait to see what happens on Nov 16, will I be getting NBA TV, and have the option to get NBA league Pass?
I am debating on calling TWC before the change in hope that I will automatically get all the new stuff because I already pay $151.00 a month for my combined cableservice and internet.
Should I wait and see what happens or call TWC now and try to get a promotional thing like Sakaike did?
Any thoughts or insights you have on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Believe it or not, your current non-discounted rate is cheaper than mine. Without promotions, my monthly bill would have been $155, and that's without the extra $5 for ESPN-HD, since it is not available in my area until after the switchover, which is scheduled for November 14 here. I also don't have a Moxi.
If you currently are paying for and receiving everything they have to offer, then you "should" get everything after the switchover as well, including the additional HD channels on the HD-Plus tier, since you are paying for it now with your ESPN-HD "surcharge". This assumes that you're like most people on this board (but not all, I don't think) that currently pay an additional $5 a month for ESPN-HD.
If you don't do anything, your channel line-up will change, you will receive everything available, and your monthly bill will remain the same.
However, beginning December 1, according to my most recent TWC mailer, the new TWC pricing plan will go into effect, but only for those people that specifically request it, or make changes to their service. For people that choose to do nothing, your old pricing plan (with new channels - yes, I know it's confusing) will remain in place.
There is no harm in calling TWC now to inquire what your new price would be for the same level of service under the new pricing plan. You can get the number from them, and depending on what it is, you can choose to take it, or do nothing. However, based on my conversation with TWC, my guess is that your bill with the new TWC pricing scheme will actually be higher than what it is now. If that is the case, you will either want to do nothing (and keep your current pricing), and/or inquire about receiving a promotional discount similar to mine. Keep in mind though, that after the promotional period ends, you would revert to the presumably higher TWC pricing plan. You can't go back to your current rate if you take advantage of the discount. I decided to go for it because I'm betting on the come that by the end of my promotional period, other more desirable options will be available at that time; something that is not by any means assured.
One last piece of advice: While I feel confident that everything I've said is factual and accurate, I still highly recommend that you call TWC at your earliest convenience to confirm what I've described here. And please post your results, since I've got to believe that many other readers are struggling with exactly the same dilemna.

In west san fernando valley, I have an SA 8300 HD-DVR, my latest bill had 10.00 for DVR service and 4.85 to rent the box, and of course 15 cents to rent the remote, the remote is where they make their "real" money ;)
so it's basically 15/month

You get billed for DVR service? Unless that is new, I wasn't aware of any service/subscription cost like Tivo, just a rental cost.
UltraDagger 10-30-06, 09:52 PM So I finally got a cable subscription for my TiVo Series 3 in Santa Monica.
They had to come out twice to set up the cable cards. The first guy didn't follow the directions.
Everything is fine but I am not getting TNT-HD or Discovery HD Theater. It's not a big deal right now, so I'll worry about that later. I am getting HDNet, HDNet Movies, ESPNHD, ESPN2HD, INHD and INHD2 before our Nov 7 Lineup change, so that's kinda cool.
I'm paying . . .
Broadcast Basic - 12.00
HD Package - 5.00
Showtime - 5.00
CableCard1 - 1.75
CableCard2 - 4.15
I also upgraded my Internet to RoadRunner Extreme so I'm getting some sort of package discount.
monkeyboy1010 10-30-06, 10:54 PM Me too, I was wondering about the Series 3 TIVO and the Cable Card. How much each per month and how much for the install. Last but not least what is your impression of your new TIVO?
New TiVo 3 here, works as advertised. I am replacing a HR10-250 (DirecTV HD TiVo) and I am very pleased. I would place myself as an advanced TiVo user, I hacked my 10-250 so that I could use network and transfer shows, so your experience may vary.
TWC was able to install the cable cards without much extra effort. The installer followed the included instruction sheet from TiVo for the install and all went well.
The recent lineup change was a bump on the road, but not a show stopper. I had to rerun the channel setup, and all worked fine. I, like other subscribers in my area (Eagle Rock service area) have still not gotten Universal HD or Stars HD but that is not the fault of the TiVo.
The cards are just a few dollars a month.

The 10 bux is listed as "DVR Service" on my statement i guess you could consider it 10 bux for the "service" or an extra 10 bux towards renting the DVR box versus just a regular set-top box; as much as i hate cable co's i dont think its not that bad a deal, it's got two tuners and 160 GB, slightly more expensive per month than tivo-3 (depending on contract) but you also don't have to shell out the 800 bones up front...if i can get an external eSATA harddrive hooked up and working well it'll be a blast, will try a 250-300 GB soon (depending on how my birthday goes) should get me up to maybe 60 hours of HD
Anyone with the Motorola 6416 (from Moxi) notice that the guide has "To Be Announced" items only a few days out? In other words, I can't even set a Series Recording for Kidnapped this Saturday because the guide shows it as to be announced. I noticed this this past Sunday, I figured it (kidnapped) would be available now, but it still isn't. When the Moto 6416 was first installed it downloaded a couple weeks of data within a few days, now it doesn't seem to be doing that. I have not powered it off since the original install. Haven't had any power issues, would have noticed because of another device I have plugged into the same power outlet.

I'm tempted to go back to cable since Moxie is now history and that 6416 is the box that you'd get.
Can you verify the hard drive expansion possibility (how?) and if the firewire is working for direct live DVHS recording and delayed DVR-to-DVHS archiving?

I thought hard drive expansion was IMPOSSIBLE as of now due to, among other things, software on Moto 6412/6416.
