popechild 04-25-07, 01:38 AM Even after a hour or so on this thread, I still need to ask just to make sure: are there any HD channels *other* than what's available OTA that anyone's able to pick up with QAM? (ie. Discovery HD, ESPN HD, etc.?)
I use an HTPC (w/ Sage) and currently only watch OTA HD. I would gladly pay for cable and whatever HD package is necessary if I could somehow integrate some of the cable HD channels into my system, but I don't really have any desire to switch back and forth between my HTPC setup and a cable box dvr depending on what channel I want to watch. If even ESPNHD alone was available unencrypted via QAM, I could get the HDHomeRun and be content...
Also, since I've never used QAM before, do you need to have a "digital cable" package to be able to pick up QAM channels, or are they available at any point once you have a cable plan (like basic analog, etc.)?
Oh, and one more: any chance anyone out here with TW can tell me whether or not any of the boxes TW offers are capable of being used with the R5000 mod?
Thanks!

i only get one non-OTA HD channel in the clear (TNTHD), there currently isnt really a good way to get cable-HD channels (encrypted qam) into your HTPC, OEM's are starting to build cablecard equiped HTPC's that are very unstable and cost an arm and a leg, so for the next year, what you're trying to do is pretty much impossible, unless you are fortunate enough to be on a cable system that has HD channels in the clear; some places have ESPN's, etc.. in the clear, but it typically seems like a mistake on the cable co's part, and might not be worth it to justify buying hardware to receiver clear-qam since the cable co could decide to encrypt those stations at any time
94 KCET is still analog because this is a channel that provides TV guide services for some TVs with cable cards. We put it there for this reason.
Thanks for the answer to the mystery! I'd have never guessed!
Hi, I do know about zap2it, The problem is that programming depends on the TWC guide which often does not indicate repeats even when they are.
I go to http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/ it gives me the info on whether a show is new or not or whether it is in HD....just put in your zip code and you are good to go....
You write "our lineup" are you from TWC? I guess we will have to contact National Geographic and ESPN. Let's start an email campaign.
"but it records on the analog channel 66". There are not analog channels anymore in our digital lineup. Channel 128 and 66 are just two location for sci-fi digital. As for national geographic HD, it's been part of our bandwidth plan from the beginning just like ESPN2 HD. We'd had these services for a long time, but the originators are keeping us from deliver them to our customers. It find find it funny that every one lashes out at the cable company, but no one wonders why some service providers are kept waiting with services ready to be delivered, while other providers are given a head start to show them.
HI, Checkout UHD (419) here in Santa Clarita. They run repeats of Stargate Atlantis in HD. They also have Startrek Enterprise in HD. Does this mean that SCI-Fi channel is in HD, but we don't get it?
I can only imagine how Atlantis would look in HD...the theme song rocks...Stargate Atlantis is even good in analog but just imagine.....

Thanks. Yeah, I knew about the limitations, but since I haven't had cable here, I was just hoping that maybe we'd be some of the lucky ones that got some non-OTA HD channels in the clear for some reason.
I'm also still curious is anyone's figured out whether or not any of the TWC cable boxes are able to use the R5000 mod - this is the only other way to get cable/sat based HD into an HTPC at this point...

The answer to your second question is probably yes....channel 419 is part of the HDtier that I refuse to purchase...why should I spend even more money when they should be giving this to us gratis...I wonder how hard it is to televise in HD...if it is not difficult we should be getting it....and I think we will when Directtv goes all HD ....something I will need to see to believe...maybe we should ask the mayor of LA to request programming for us at a reasonable rate...he seems to have the inside scoop on this...

Not sure what area you are in. But for me in West LA the answer is no. In fact as you may have already read we don't even get all OTA HD channels. So far I get CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, KCET and recently added KCAL. No KOCE, KTLA or my13. And definitely no HD cable channels in the clear QAM.

Firewire may be an option for you if your HTPC supports it. You'll need to find out if the cable box you are going to get will have firewire output enabled. If you go with the Cable Card things get even more complex as then you'd have to have a TV with the Firewire output.
Also, since I've never used QAM before, do you need to have a "digital cable" package to be able to pick up QAM channels, or are they available at any point once you have a cable plan (like basic analog, etc.)?
In all honestly I'm not really sure what you are asking here. But here goes. With any package you purchase from TWC, starting from the Broadcast Basic which costs $12 a month, you will receive OTA HD channels for free. The ones I listed above. To see the cable HD channels you will either need a Cable Card or a Cable Box. Cable Card is cheaper but you loose some features. Like seeing Pay Per View channels, to which FSNHD is currently mapped to and I believe you also loose the Interactive TV Guide. There may be more but that's all I remember.
Greywacke 04-25-07, 06:44 PM the problem didnt get fixed for me until i contacted Patricia Rockenwagner and Kieth Vaugn (818-700-5969 that's the number he left but when i called back the person who answered was clueless), basically you need to find someone who has a clue what a channel map is, and tell them that channel 425 which should be ESPN2HD, is incorrectly mapped to the "You Need A Digital Receiver" screen
Thanks for the advice, I emailed your contact above with a description of my issue, as well as called a TWC "inside" technical supervisor whom I was referred to during my install for any future cable card issues I might have. He's going to check into the issue with my headend and get back to me, hopefully between these two folks the channel will get properly mapped and I'll get my ESPN2HD.
RandyWalters 04-26-07, 05:28 PM Any cable card users able to see ESPN2HD on channel 425? All I see via my Series 3 Tivo is a TWC screen which advertises their DVR/Digital Receiver and also says that a Digital Receiver is required to view this channel.I have TWC Torrance/El Segundo (not affiliated with the many Los Angeles divisions) and i now get ESPN2-HD on Channel 425 on my SA8300HD, but on my Tivo Series 3 (with two CableCards) i get the orange screen telling me that a Digital Receiver is required to view this channel. My Tivo S3 got KCAL-HD just fine when TWC added some weeks ago, and before that my Tivo S3 also got UNI-HD and MTV-HD when they were added but not so with ESPN2-HD. The tech who installed my CableCards a few months ago said TWC had no plans to go to SDV in my area but i wonder if this is SDV?
absolutic 04-26-07, 05:34 PM Here in LA (Beverly Center Area, formerly served by Comcast) noticed that I started getting ESPN2 recently. Nice, since I thought my area would not get that channel.
When do we get National Geographic in HD?

Thanks for the reply. After doing some more research, it looks like the best option by far (other than cost) to me is to get a box that can use the r5000 mod. Specifically, I'd like to buy the Motorola DCP501 and use it with the r5000 hack. But when I call TW to ask about provisioning that box (it has a DCT2000 tuner built-in and as far as I know is the only "cable box" available for purchase directly to a customer) they have no clue what I'm talking about.
Has anyone successfully gotten TW to provision a DCP501 (or other "customer owned" box that may be out there) and if so, how did you do it or who did you talk to?
I think my Motorola 6416 has new software on it. I could have sworn in the DVR menu it used to say "Scheduled Recording" and now it says "Future Recordings". Also the quick menu now has a description of each item as you select it, not sure that that was there before. Wonder what else.

Yes, I watched as my cable box became unavailable at 2 am today with dl displayed on hte face. Afterward, it was upgraded to Firmware version: 16.35 and Software version: 74.53-3321. Check here for more info: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/How_to_use_a_Motorola_DVR/Firmware_and_Software#DCT-64xx_Phase_III
It's not a world shattering update, but worth having so far.
Interesting the way favorites works now. First of all you can now setup multiple favorite lists. And now when you are in the guide and you press the favorites button instead of going to the next favorite channel it simply displays all of your favorite channels in the guide, eliminating non-favorites.
Software Version 74.53-3321
* Available for Models: DCT-64xx PII & PIII, DCT-34xx
* Available Date: 2006-09-20
* VOD Version: A231_VOD 23.45
* Bugfixes:
o "MUTE" bug during scheduled recordings. Comcast: "The DVR mute issue has been resolved. Pressing any key except mute and volume up or down will unmute a muted recording." Note that "MUTE" is now only displayed on-screen at the moment the audio is muted, not continually while muted. Also, canceling the mute will also cancel the automatic power off when the recording ends.
* New or updated features:
o Includes features of 73.44, plus...
o 30-second skip feature is re-enabled on Comcast.
o Fast-forward and rewind are much faster.
o Introduction of Comcast Central channel 960 (in some markets).
o "Subtitle Settings" page on the User Settings Menu.
o "Additional HDMI Settings" page on the User Settings Menu, offering a DVI or HDMI output setting, wtih Color Space and Audio Output settings for HDMI.
o Pressing the Menu button, then going to the Home icon now goes to Comcast Central instead of Main Menu (which can still be accessed directly by pressing the Menu button twice).
o If a manual recording covers multiple programs, all will display a record icon in the guide.
o Multiple Favorite lists can be created.
o When displaying the guide (full or mini), pressing FAV will only display your favorites.
o The DVR %Full number no longer includes the 3% used by the buffer.
* Lost features:
o Manual recordings that cover multiple programs no longer display divider ticks on the time bar. The individual programs no longer list their actual running time on the info screen, but list the entire recording time instead.
* New bugs:
o The graphic overlay doesn't always cover to right side of the 4:3 screen. This appears to be somewhat based on the length of the channel number and name.

Sounds like we are seeing the same thing on channel 425 on our CC-equipped Tivo S3's. Just got off the phone with a tech who thinks it might be due to old, thin (RGB-59?) that is coming into my older condo unit. Does this sound plausible?
For now, we're going to schedule a tech to come out and test a newer, fatter cable running from the cable junction box outside directly to my S3 so see if this is really the problem. I'll provide an update after that visit.
LambentMaterial 04-27-07, 07:21 PM Is anyone else getting choppy video on some HD channels? Kcal9-HD (409) and HD-Net seem to be very choppy for some reason, while others such as ABC7-HD looks normal.

Yeah, 421-427 are all very pixelated, if they come through at all. I'm in Los Feliz (90027 - Eagle Rock headend). Everything else looks fine.
EDIT: OK, rebooted the STB and all channels are up again.
If a customer only has internet service through TWC, do basic cable channels come through the line as well without additional charges?
SPDICKEY 04-28-07, 01:36 AM If a customer only has internet service through TWC, do basic cable channels come through the line as well without additional charges?
Its not supposed to, the installer should put a video trap on your drop to cut off the frequencies from channel 2-70 to prevent that. But many data only customer lines don't get that installed. If not, then you'll be able to see the analog channels and the in the clear QAM channels just like everyone else.
http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/4845447-description.html
So if I decide to cancel will someone come out to pickup my HD-DVR and possibly put on the video trap. Or can I drop the box off at a local office (if they still do that here in L.A.) to attempt to avoid having someone come out and trap me?

Previously on the 6416 (but not on my 6412-II in LA) , there was a volume control for the DVR. If you had the remote "cable" mode and pressed the VOLUME rocker, the DVR's volume output level indicator showed at the top of the screen and the audio output level of the DVR (including on HDMI, not just on analog L/R) adjusted as you pressed the button. In order to adjust your TV's volume level you first had to put the remote into "TV" mode and then use the VOLUME rocker. Very annoying, very irritating, very confusing... as some other buttons only functioned for TV or cable depending on remote mode, and some buttons always functioned solely for TV or cable regardless of remote mode.
Ok, they have "fixed" it with the new firmware. Now, the DVR's audio output level variability has been completely eliminated. Even if you are in "cable" mode and press the VOLUME rocker, there is no change at all to the audio output level from the box... which is now always constant (i.e. "line level"). Now it will be solely your TV's volume control (or the VOLUME rocker on the DVR's remote) which influences your audio volume, as it should be (and as it has always been with my 6412-II). No more two separate and offsetting volume adjusting capabilities.
Only problem is, the DVR still responds to the VOLUME rocker when in "cable" mode, so that the DVR's volume indicator and scale still show up at the top of the screen and adjust if you push the button. The button has no effect, but the indicator still moves. In other words, it's still annoying to have to have any effect whatsoever when using the VOLUME rocker if you're in "cable" mode. You still have to go to "TV" mode in order for the VOLUME rocker to affect the TV's volume.
They really should have just done away with DVR-VOLUME completely (as is the case with the original 6412-II), locking the VOLUME rocker permanently only to the TV. That way no matter what mode the DVR's remote is in, the VOLUME rocker ALWAYS controls TV volume, period. The DVR's audio outputs should ALWAYS be at line-level.
Oh well... maybe next time they'll fix this completely.
I think I've noticed the 6416 is a bit more speedy and responsive with the new software. Anyone else notice or am I dreaming?
So if I decide to cancel will someone come out to pickup my HD-DVR and possibly put on the video trap. Or can I drop the box off at a local office (if they still do that here in L.A.) to attempt to avoid having someone come out and trap me?
They'll "eventually" get to you. My friend had an installer knock on his door and ask permission to cut his cable. (He's on D*). He was nice about it so he really had no choice but to let him. That nuked his QAM TV. They were doing an area sweep.
Re: Update
I also noticed the term "Series Priority" is gone and "Series Recordings" is in its place. At least it makes sense now.
airpolgas 04-28-07, 02:11 PM Hi guys. I'm moving from downtown LA to Santa Clarita next month. I currently have Dish Network with no OTA (apartment), and now I want OTA.
antennaweb.org lists my area as 25 miles away from Mt. Wilson, and I only have a purple CBS channel available. However, channelmaster.com lists some products that has range over 50 miles.
I'm not sure who to believe, that's why I was hoping some people in the neighborhood can give me advice.
Here's the target area:
http://*******.com/2nqbgu
EDIT: I can't seem to put links yet, so that's t-i-n-y-u-r-l dot com slash ... 2nqbgu
Questions:
Can I get reception at my new house?
Can you give advice on what antenna to buy? (multi-bay or ultra-hi crossfire?)
Thank you.

there's no sure thing, but you're probably better off dropping off your STB, i have just HSI, but according to my apartment manager, all the apartments are supposed to have free basic, but i'm not sure how much I trust her, so when i got rid of my digital cable, i dropped off my cablecard, now i just keep my fingers crossed, although i'll probably sign up for digital cable again (or D*) in time for football season
airpolgas,
I don't live up there but, look at the houses in your new neighborhood, if you see antennas it should be a good indication. However there are quite a few mountain ranges in between Santa Clarita and Mt. Wilson. You can get a cheapie and test it before you buy a roof top. Good luck.

I don't know about Huntington Beach, but my buddy in Simi Valley got a Motorola 3412 when he upgraded to digital cable. He only wanted the HD cable box without DVR service but the cable guy came with the 3412 and said thats all we have for now.
airpolgas 04-30-07, 04:18 AM Thanks for the reply, SirJW. I've seen about three antennas when I drove around, so I'll ask them before I put any money into it.

I'll provide an update after that visit. That's definitely not the problem in my case. Last year TWC ran all brand new RG6 from the Fiber Optic junction box on the pole behind my house directly to my A/V equipment. I was having problems with my old SA8000HD DVR when they pushed the newest Passport software and they stupidly said it must be a problem with the cable. My two SA8300HDs worked flawlessly with the new software upgrade, but my old 8000HD (which has a junky processor) choked on it. The old stuff was RG6 as well and was in perfect shape, and the new cable didn't fix the problem just like i told them it wouldn't. I thought about running Guided Setup again but i've never had to do this before when they added other HD channels, so i think it might be SDV. I tried to call TWC this weekend but was on hold for so long that i had to hang up and get on with my life.
I still cannot access ch 425 through my S3, but i did record the IRL race on my 8300HD both on SD channel 253 and HD channel 425 and the picture was much better on the 425 broadcast. Then Drag Racing came on after that and it was in full-on HD and looked incredible! But in the guide it did not indicate that it would be in HD. I rarely watch drag racing but this is the first time i'd ever seen it in HD so i watched it for a while. Engine explosions look spectacular !
I also cannot get the digital network subchannels on the S3 (ch 225 through maybe 231 if i remember correctly) - i get the same "must use digital receiver to view these channels" message. I can tune them on my 8300HD however, just not on the S3. These may be SDV as well.
DSperber 04-30-07, 10:42 PM Interesting the way favorites works now. First of all you can now setup multiple favorite lists. (1) Software Version 74.53-3321
* Available for Models: DCT-64xx PII & PIII, DCT-34xx
* Available Date: 2006-09-20
Not 100% correct. Here in LA, where I have a DCT-6412-II, I'm now back home and observe that my DVR is still running the same old software I've been running forever: 71.44-1203, firmware 09.19.
(2) On my sister's 6416 in Chicago (Comcast), I had programmed the FAV button on the remote for her to be a 30-second skip (because of its perfect ergonomic location and the fact that it previously was unused, or at least had near-zero usefulness for what it did).
Unfortunately, this now conflicts with the new "active" FAV button (when viewing the GUIDE). If you do press it while viewing the GUIDE, the GUIDE disappears and the bar at the bottom showing current channel/info being viewed appears.
I gave her a choice... retain the FAV button as 30-second skip (which she's gotten used to in its location on the remote), or return FAV to its default function (which presumably would give her the new "favorites" functionality) and assign some other unused button (down in the PIP area) to be 30-second skip.
She hasn't decided yet (as she's long accustomed to the old way of getting GUIDE "favorites" to appear, by pushing MENU, and with cursor already positioned on the "heart" icon then pressing OK/Select). Same two button pushes required before as with the new software: GUIDE, then FAV. So she doesn't really care. Now if in the new software they'd done what they should have done and made FAV an instant GUIDE->favorites combo-button (i.e. single-click to get "favorites" GUIDE onscreen) that would have be a different story.
Anyway my 6412-II does not have any upgraded software.
Time Warner Cable Trips in Rush for Adelphia, Comcast Clients
By Cecile Daurat
May 1 (Bloomberg) -- Josh Harman, a disgruntled Time Warner Cable Inc. customer in Los Angeles, was so fed up with his service that he spent $700 trimming trees in his yard to make room for a satellite dish.
``I went out of my way, expense-wise, to get out of Time Warner Cable TV service,'' said Harman, a 46-year-old TV production editor. He was among customers who defected in cities such as Dallas and Los Angeles since Time Warner Cable acquired some Adelphia Communications Inc. and Comcast Corp. systems last August. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. analyst Anthony Noto puts the total defections at more than 90,000.
Time Warner Cable, the second-largest U.S. cable-TV provider, says it botched the customer transfer, overloading cable lines and disrupting TV, Internet and e-mail service. The snags contributed to a narrowing of profit margins in the first quarter to 33.4 percent from 34.4 percent, based on estimates by Credit Suisse analyst Bryan Kraft. The company probably will say tomorrow that first-quarter profit rose 40 percent to $1.3 billion.
``It looks like the Iraq of cable acquisitions,'' says Larry Haverty, an associate portfolio manager at Gamco Investors Inc. in Rye, New York. Gamco owns 12.2 million shares of Time Warner Inc., Time Warner Cable's parent. ``They didn't send in enough troops or the right people.''
The loss of customers and increased spending helped drive an 11 percent decline in the share price of the Stamford, Connecticut-based cable company since Time Warner took it public in January.
`Too Quickly'
Time Warner Cable acquired the extra cable lines, and 4 million customers, as part of its $16.7 billion joint purchase of Adelphia with Comcast. Time Warner Cable attempted to upgrade Los Angeles customers to digital service at the same time, causing the system overload. In Dallas, the systems were so old that they couldn't cope with the switch to Time Warner Cable.
Too few customer service staff members were in place to cope with complaints, leading to unanswered calls and long hold times, the company said in an April 13 letter to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, whose office had questioned the outages.
``We just moved too quickly -- it's a very competitive environment so of course you want to get as fast you can,'' Time Warner Cable Chief Operating Officer Landel Hobbs said in an interview.
The head of the company's Southern California unit resigned in March.
``In plant upgrades, we are making tremendous progress,'' Hobbs said. Dallas was complicated because the systems were ``not in good shape'' Hobbs said he was ``somewhat'' surprised by the shape of the assets. ``My focus now is how to fix it,'' he said.
Jewel in Crown
The integration of the systems will be completed by the end of the year, and customer losses will slow in the second half, Hobbs said. About 52,000 customers defected between August and the end of December, 80 percent of whom live in Los Angeles and Dallas, Time Warner Cable said. The company hasn't released the number for the first quarter.
Time Warner Cable has been the jewel in Time Warner's crown in the past five years, generating 43 percent of the company's profit in 2006 and growing faster than any of the other four units for 13 straight quarters.
Time Warner, the world's largest media company, owns 84 percent of the cable company. The rest was given to Adelphia bondholders and is now publicly traded. Time Warner Chief Executive Officer Richard Parsons, 59, said in January that he may reduce the stake over time.
Time Warner, which also reports first-quarter results tomorrow, may say profit fell to 21 cents a share, based on the average estimate of 17 analysts compiled by Bloomberg. Profit was reduced by lower earnings at the film unit and the publishing division, owner of Fortune and People magazines. New York-based Time Warner also owns the AOL Internet service and CNN.
Customer Service
To field the calls, Time Warner Cable added 400 call center workers in Los Angeles this year, for a total of 2,000. In Dallas, it is adding an average of 15 new service employees each week to reduce waiting time.
The City Council of Moorpark, a community of 35,000 north of Los Angeles County, decided in March to fine Time Warner Cable $25,000. The council meets next month for a final decision on the sanction.
``Complaints are still at an unacceptable level,'' Councilman Keith Millhouse said in an interview. ``Several times I've waited over an hour on the phone with them, only to finally get someone and then get the wrong information.''
`Flip Side'
A proposed class-action lawsuit, filed in California state court in Los Angeles, probably will be extended to Dallas, said Alexander Rufus-Isaacs, a partner at the Beverly Hills law firm Glassman, Browning, Saltsman & Jacobs Inc.
Because of the customer defections, Los Angeles may have the greatest potential to boost earnings, said Craig Moffett, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein in New York. Moffett, ranked the top cable analyst by Institutional Investor magazine, rates the shares ``outperform.''
``There's flip side of every coin,'' Moffett said. ``As problematic the integration turns out to be, it makes it a larger opportunity for growth. It's a market starving for better experience.''

Greywacke 05-01-07, 12:36 PM That's definitely not the problem in my case.
Well, I had a clueless tech come out who maintained that it couldn't be cable-type issue b/c if so, I wouldn't be getting all the other HD channels. He called the person back at the office for additional cable card hits to see if that would solve the problem, but it didn't work. The woman back at the office then contended that ESPN2HD wasn't available in my area (Huntington Beach). I protested a bit, saying I had read numerous reports here on AVS that LA TWC subscriberes were now getting it, including someone in Westminster. Perhaps her documentation was out of date, given that it was added relatively recently.
I hope it isn't an SDV issue - eriv16 has maintained that TWC LA won't be moving to SDV for a while. Please post if you are able to talk to someone at TWC and get ESPN2HD via your S3 or confirm the problem.

Via channel 425? That would confirm that it's a cable card issue, hopefully they're just mapping it wrong from the head end. Of course, trying to find the proper person report and fix such a techical issue is a nightmare.

Time Warner Cable faulted
Despite customer complaints about service and equipment, revenue was up for the first quarter.
By JAN NORMAN, The Orange County Register
Thursday, May 3, 2007
Since Time Warner Cable Inc. acquired Adelphia Communications Corp. last year, Anaheim customer Roger Rivet has had a poor television picture that blinks off as many as 30 times an hour and Internet service so slow that it takes Outlook Express two minutes to open.
He had a long hold time when he called for service, and technicians needed three visits to correct problems. His monthly bill for the three services went from $101 to $118.
Time Warner and Comcast Corp. paid $17.6 billion for bankrupt Adelphia in April 2006 and then swapped cable systems in some regions to give each company a stronger presence in their respective markets. On Aug. 1, Time Warner went from 360,000 customers to 1.9 million in Southern California including most of northern and central Orange County.
Chief Executive Glenn Britt told analysts Wednesday that the company "initially stumbled in Los Angeles by trying to change too much too fast."
The transition has been plagued with problems because Time Warner Cable did not anticipate the level of complaints and the poor condition of the infrastructure and equipment inherited from Adelphia. Time Warner compounded its problems by creating changes customers did not want.
As a result, the head of the Southern California office resigned in March. Time Warner Cable's share price dropped 10.3 percent since the company went public at $41.25 in January, although the price rose 76 cents to $36.99 on Wednesday. Chief Financial Officer John Martin said Wednesday that the company lost 17,000 subscribers in Los Angeles and Dallas in the first quarter on top of 40,000 in the fourth quarter.
Still, Time Warner Cable reported $579 million in first quarter operating income Wednesday, up 28 percent. Revenue was $3.9 billion, up 61 percent. Britt said Los Angeles and Dallas did not contribute to that growth.
Rivet's experience with Time Warner Cable has been common, judging from more than 100 responses to the Orange County Register's request for readers' tales about the cable transition.
Ninety percent of the readers reported problems, the most common of which were:
* Waits of 30 minutes or more on hold when calling customer service.
* Other customer service problems included getting no response to e-mail questions and service technicians who were unqualified to do repairs.
* Frequent and lengthy service outages for television, phone and Internet service.
* Equipment that didn't work or was promised but not available.
* Poor television picture quality.
* Favorite cable channels, such as Animal Planet, Travel Channel and Turner Classic Movies, moved to higher-priced packages.
Time Warner Cable's integration of three different systems was a massive undertaking, said spokeswoman Patti Rockenwagner. "They were all on different billing systems, different video-on-demand hardware and software, different phone switching equipment. We moved at too rapid a clip. If we could do it over, we would …make the changes over a year instead of two months."
Time Warner changed the channel numbers for all customers in August. It also required customers to sign up for digital service, which is usually more expensive, to get certain channels such as Animal Planet. Time Warner Cable expected more calls from those changes, but still thought it had enough customer service employees and repair technicians until it started having problems with Adelphia's aging infrastructure and equipment that was incompatible with Time Warner systems, she said.
To compound the equipment problem, a distributor ran out of digital video recorder and high-definition boxes. "It was right around the holidays and (NFL) Super Bowl…When there is high demand, (equipment is) are hard to get," Rockenwagner said. "Most of those inventory issues have been resolved."
Technical service also has been problematic, customers said. Costa Mesa resident Marilyn Carne-Smith said that technicians came to her home three times and didn't know how to get her high-definition TV and Internet service to work properly. Her husband finally told the technician how to fix the problem.
Cypress resident Angelica Bohmann said she was on hold more than 45 minutes when she had television picture distortions and slow Internet speed. Fullerton resident D.D. Wiley waited 42 minutes to report a five-day outage of Internet service.
The company has hired 400 more customer service representatives to supplement the 1,600 on staff, but training takes six to eight weeks, Rockenwagner said. It also increased the number of field technicians and staff in retail stores by 10 percent.
Those people are now at work and the wait times are shorter, she said. Time Warner Cable also changed its phone system, giving callers more self-help options, and added help tools at the five local call centers.
Many cable customers have switched to satellite television service, and others said they are just waiting for AT&T or Verizon to bring their telephone-Internet-television bundled services to their neighborhood. Still, Time Warner Cable could recover from this acquisition blunder, according to Susan Cadwallader, a marketing associate professor at Cal State Fullerton, who specializes in customer service.
"It's called the recovery paradox," she said. "Research indicates that even if your customer service fails, you can not only recover, but make the customer more loyal than if the problem had not happened.
"However, you can get your customers so riled up against you that they become activists against you."
Time Warner Cable is working to achieve the former scenario, Chief Operating Officer Landel Hobbs said. Now that the company has finished changing channel lineups and building digital telephone infrastructure "I think we are well on the way to stemming the tide of (subscriber) losses."
Orange County customer Cheryl Alvarado is waiting to see improvement. "The bottom line was that they had too much business and too few people to do a good job of servicing anybody. I guess only time will tell how they will do in the future."
Acquisition time line
Key dates in Time Warner's acquisition of Adelphia Communications Corp. and customer swap with Comcast Corp.
* April 21, 2005 Time Warner and Comcast announce purchase of Adelphia assets.
* July 31, 2006 Acquisition of Adelphia assets and Time Warner-Comcast swap of cable system franchises to achieve geographic dominance completed.
* Oct. 17, 2006 Time Warner changes channel numbers for all 1.9 million Southern California subscribers and encourages change from analog to digital as part of its integration of three different systems.
* Feb. 13, 2007 Time Warner spins off Time Warner Cable as separate company.
* March 14, 2007 Time Warner Cable Southern California President Roger Keating resigns under pressure because of customer complaints.
* May 2, 2007 Time Warner Cable acknowledges loss of 57,000 subscribers in Los Angeles and Dallas over previous six months in announcing first quarter profit of $276 million (up 16 percent from a year earlier) on revenues of $3.85 billion (up 61 percent).
Readers share their Time Warner tales
Register readers were invited to tell their experiences with Time Warner Cable. The comments were 10 to 1 negative. Here is a sampling:
"Installation was quick and handled professionally. During (two months) have called for help twice. On both occasions the service was provided quickly and efficiently." – Patricia Edwards, Brea
"Our Internet started going on and off for short periods. Tried to phone TW tech and was unable to get them for long periods. Several times. Then Internet went off and was off five days. Tried to phone again and this time wait them out. Timed it at 42 minutes." – D.D. Wiley, Fullerton
"Despite the horrible receptionand Internet connection, I was paying double what I had previously been paying. Last month I discontinued my Time Warner services and moved to DirecTV." – Angelica Bohmann, Cypress
"I called Time Warner to have a HD DVR box installed…There was a two-week lead time due to no boxes in stock. I waited two weeks. I left y job early for my scheduled appointment. I called and the customer service person tells me they have no HD DVR boxes. I became angry no one calls me to cancel my service." – Debbie Harris, Fountain Valley
"The technician was an hour late and had a bad attitude. He kept asking me if I wanted to have him upgrade my system. He stormed out…Then for some reason my current reception stopped for at least eight hours." – Wayne Simpson, Anaheim
"They levied a backdoor (price) increase. Less channels at the same price. In order to recoup the channels lost, I had to subscribe to an upgraded package." – Andre Beck, Anaheim
"The poor service became more than just an irritation. My cable was out about half the time. When it was working, the picture was distorted and several channels had an audio/video sync issue. I am very satisfied with my new DirecTV service." – Steve Mitchell, no city listed
"The phone service has been terrible … In mid-February I asked to have the voice mail service discontinued. The first of March I called again…The very next week Time Warner voice mail service was capturing all of my calls. My phone did not even ring." – Bruce Gustafson, no city listed
"Time Warner is more expensive and I get fewer channels." – Robert Stone, Long Beach
"For the third time in a month our cable box stuck on channel 1 'on demand.' As usual, when we called Time Warner we had to hold for 45 minutes while we listened to their ads." – Ron Martin, Placentia
"If you can ever get through (when calling customer service) the wait time is more than 20 minutes and then sometimes they disconnect you. The people are rude and will not give straight answers and will not let you speak with a supervisor." – Annette Gilbert, Yorba Linda

Time Warner Cable ekes out gains
Despite botched efforts to integrate acquired systems, its quarterly profit rises 16.5%.
By James S. Granelli, Times Staff Writer
May 3, 2007
Time Warner Cable Inc. continued to lose pay-TV customers in Los Angeles and Dallas during the first quarter as it struggled to recover from botched efforts to integrate other cable systems it acquired last summer.
But sales gains in so-called triple-play packages which include TV, Internet and phone service, helped the nation's second-largest cable TV company post double-digit increases in revenue and profit.
Time Warner lost 20,000 basic TV customers, 17,000 of which were in the two major markets. But that was more than offset by 66,000 new subscribers elsewhere.
The losses in Los Angeles and Dallas also slowed considerably from the nearly 42,000 who quit in the final three months of last year. That's when Time Warner began combining TV and Internet operations it acquired from Comcast Corp. and Adelphia Communications Corp.
"We stumbled initially in Los Angeles by trying to change too much too fast," Chief Executive Glenn A. Britt said. "But once we realized this, we moved very quickly to remedy the situation."
The company, which went public in the first quarter, reported that net income rose 16.5% to $276 million, or 28 cents a share, from $237 million, or 23 cents, in last year's first quarter. Revenue rose 62.5% to $3.9 billion from $2.4 billion.
The numbers were boosted by the last summer's acquisition of Comcast and Adelphia properties. In the deal, Time Warner and Comcast acquired bankrupt Adelphia, then swapped properties to give each other dominant positions in major metropolitan areas. Stamford, Conn.-based Time Warner ended up with 1.9 million customers throughout Southern California, making it the area's major cable firm.
Sanford Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett said Time Warner's growth was spectacular despite weak advertising revenue. He said expectations weren't high because of the company's problems in Los Angeles.
Customers complained about losing e-mail, Internet and TV service and said customer service agents kept them on hold for hours. The fiasco cost Roger Keating his job as head of Time Warner's Greater Los Angeles operation.
"Today's results should also put those integration concerns into better perspective," Moffett said in a note to investors. "Even continued subscriber losses in acquired systems weren't enough to restrain overall growth, which beat expectations on all important metrics."
During the first quarter, Time Warner also launched its wireless service with Sprint Nextel Corp. in five cities. The mobile-phone venture, which includes Comcast and two other cable firms, is being marketed jointly under the brand name Pivot.
Time Warner Cable shares rose 73 cents to $36.95.

I was hung up on by a recording while holding on the line for TW...apparently if they make you wait a certain amount of time they clear the lines...I live in Orange County and read that article in the Register this morning...my bill is now $239 ...I have the all-in-one service which according to the ads on tv means I can hardly see my bill because it is so small....Hah!!....
So it really irks me to hear about how profitable TW is despite the service...channels in the 402-430 where HD reside blip on and off...usually during important parts of a show...that happened during Lost last night....
On the up side I love HD...my tv kicks ass and my Roadrunner gives me acceptable speed...however.....if programming does not change...if service becomes unbearable I will be leaving...Verizon just installed all the stuff on my street for their service...very tempting....I can be bought...LOL....

Hello All,
I may be moving to Silver Lake in a few months and had a question about Time Warner in that area of Los Angeles. What's their bandwidth like there? For example, are they an 850Mhz system? How many of their channels are analog and do they do ADS? Also, when looking at their SoCal "Channel Lineup" page (at http://www.timewarnerla.com/channellineups/dsp_chOutput.cfm?luType=B ), Silver Lake isn't one of the areas to choose from. Which city should I pick to see what's available in Silver Lake (90039)?
Thanks all in advance - none of my searches seemed to give me any obvious answers to those questions, at least not for Silver Lake, but I admit that I'm ignorant as to how consistent this information is across LA :(

Terrible service ever since TW took over. Adelphia was infinitely better. My digital/HDTV channels suffer from audio dropouts and pixelation. Signal strength is good, has been checked out twice already. TW simply sucks. If FIOS was available in my area I'd switch in a heartbeat.
If Fios was available in my area...I would be gone in a heartbeat.

So funny! I've caught myself saying the exact same thing. There was a big change in A* when the crooks were put in jail. The people in charge at that time knew what to do and got it done! Then came TWC.   :(
Can't wait for FiOS.
Last year as we looked ahead there were dreams about our future cable operator sweeping in and finally setting the course right. Dare I say now looking back the Adelphia era may go down as the golden age of Los Angeles cable-TV.
Subscribers are an afterthought. TW couldn't wait to spin off the cable unit. Then after the reality of what they had actually purchased here and Dallas came to light management still did not own up to their lack of due diligence. Wouldn't want the inflated purchase price to be adjusted to reflect the true value.
DougDingle 05-06-07, 10:49 AM Though not exactly on topic, would like to hear from people using TW's internet service in the Eagle Rock area. They're offering 6 mb speed for $30 a month, and I'm tempted, but not if the service is unreliable or doesn't deliver the speed they claim. I currently have their digital package plus HD tier, and have had very few problems.
I'm with AT&T DSL now (previously known as SBC, and before that PacBell), and have been from the first week the service was available seven or eight years ago, and in all that time they've had around 2 or 3 outages a year, and the longest one was less than 4 hours. So reliability is VERY important to me.
I'm currently paying $20 month-to-month and get 1.2 mb down, 384 up. I'm too far from the CO to get their higher speed offering, otherwise I'd just move up to that.
Comments?

I'm paying $43/month for 6MB speed (originally from Comcast here in MDR), and that price is only because I also have cable. I think the standard price is $55. That price has been constant for me, starting from when Comcast provided 1.5MB, then doubled it to 3MB for free, then doubled it again to 6MB for free.
Check what the long-term price will be for you if that's a factor.
When Time Warner absorbed Adelphia, they experienced numerous problems in transitioning the systems including the meltdown in LA (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/83085), but they say they’re getting better as the transition continues.

The brochure I was mailed offered 1.5 mb for $20, 6 mb for $30, plus a $20 "installation fee".
Offer seems to be for 12 months, and is dependent on already having the digital cable package. New residential customers only. After 12 months, "standard monthly fees apply" with no mention of how much that is.
After reading a lot of posts all over the net, my impression is that those who have always been with TW are VERY satisfied with their internet access, while those who came over from Adelphia and Comcast are less so, with lots of spotty access and othe issues.

Oppo_Man 05-08-07, 06:28 PM Hey guys,
I am brand new to the world of HD TV and my only regret is not getting it sooner! The funniest thing is that I am not a sports fan at all, however, I found myself watching golf, and a basketball game (to my wife's dismay) this past weekend because the picture was amazing. I bought a Samsung DTBH260F over-the-air tuner and a Philips Silver Sensor Indoor HDTV Antenna. Both work fantastic with my Sony KV-HS310 34" monitor. For the price range of the equipment, I am very happy.
I was able to get everything hooked up correctly and let the tuner do the automatic channel programming. I am able to receive channels 2, 4, 5, 7, 9 (in addition to a lot of public access channels ie. KCET, KOCE, etc.) however, I cannot get FOX KTTV 11 or KCOP 13. I am in La Crescenta right below Foothill Blvd. Anyone else in this area able to receive these stations? Any suggestions? Thanks!

If you are talking about receiving these stations via antenna, you are better off in the LA OTA (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=191672) thread instead. This thread is about receiving HD from TWC cable.
Oppo_Man 05-08-07, 11:16 PM Oh, sorry about that. I'll post my question over there. Thanks for the info.
Lurker251 05-09-07, 12:46 PM Hi SoCal'ers
I new to HDTV, as green as they come. Please be kind to my 'newbie' questions.
I've spent the better part of the last couple days searching/reading the AVS forums (awesome resource, but just so much info to absorb), and have not yet nailed down the answers I have been looking for. So here goes a few ?s...
Got my first HDTV delivered this past Saturday, Sony KDL-40XBR2 :D ( it was a long 4 year wait but was worth it :), and price was good ). Upgraded from a 24" CRT Sony :o
HDTV PQ is great (tweaked settings as per CNET,other users and personal preferences and moving up from a 24" to 40", kinda a given)
I'm in the 30 day returnable period, so I wanted to know if the set I have is living up to it's HDTV potential and to weed out any potential shortcomings.
I have digital cable TWC. In the Studio City /Toluca Lake area.
For current owners of TWC HDTV, would you get the TWC HDTV upgrade again or stick w/ digital cable? (given the limited HDTV selection and issues I have read in this forum with occasional pixelations and outages).
Should I go the HDTV receiver route, what model should I try to get? (Just got off the phone w/ CS, nice lady could only tell me it would be a Motorola, she was not sure of Model #).
Does the TWC HDTV receives come w/ HDMI connections?
I was quoted approx. $8.xx for the HDTV receiver upgrade. Is it worth going the extra $5 for the additional HDTV tiers? (We, wife and I, hardly have much time channel surfing, we usually end up watching prime time TV on the major networks).
Sorry for the long-windedness, thanks in advance for any help offered.

Absolutely subscribe to every possible HD service available in your area from your local cable operator and test drive each feature. I suggest you keep a viewing log and enter every program and it's source that you watch or record (Channel, VOD, or DVR). Keep track of which programs came from a premium channel like HBO or Showtime or a tier such as the HD tier. If you did watch video on demand was it available in HD, widescreen or SD.
I also mostly watch prime time. Have you ever noticed often there'll be two programs you'd like to watch at the same time? With a DVR you don't have to worry about that. You can watch one and record the other.
After your initial trial. Add up the hours with each service and channel. Then ask yourself is it worth the fee they charge you for each item?
It really is about choice. What is a good value for you may not work for somebody else. You're not entering a long-term contract but they may want to charge you a "change of service fee "if you downgrade. Ask for a moneyback guarantee for the first month or a fee waiver.
If you want HDMI ask customer service to write that on your service order.
Hope that helps and please keep us informed with your experience.
Lurker251 05-09-07, 08:09 PM Thanks for the response and great advice bgooch :) I'll be sure to ask for a possible fee waiver in the event I downgrade and that HDMI on the service order :D
I've been using a S2 Tivo for quite some time (that 80 hrs runs out pretty quick).
Adelmoxi 05-09-07, 09:24 PM Hi SoCal'ers
I new to HDTV, as green as they come. Please be kind to my 'newbie' questions.
I've spent the better part of the last couple days searching/reading the AVS forums (awesome resource, but just so much info to absorb), and have not yet nailed down the answers I have been looking for. So here goes a few ?s...
Got my first HDTV delivered this past Saturday, Sony KDL-40XBR2 :D ( it was a long 4 year wait but was worth it :), and price was good ). Upgraded from a 24" CRT Sony :o

Hey their,
Just got my fist HDTV also (Sony KDF-50E2000) back in Feb with an HDMI cable. As you may now, TWC digital cable's packaging and pricing starts out at $32.95 and $5 a month for an additional tier. But no the 6416 or MOXI BMC(depends on which one you may get) don't come with cables. Personally, may be disconnecting my cable and switching back to Dish Network(has more HD than TWC, only compressed) because pricing is outrages, ($13.95 for 1 HD DVR, Verity tier, 1 analog outlet & $5/mo for the HD tier, all in all $57.44). Hope this helps.
Saw this article on Yahoo news today and it peaked my interest.
Comcast Corp. (CMCSA) Chief Executive Brian Roberts dazzled a cable industry audience Tuesday, showing off for the first time in public new technology that enabled a data download speed of 150 megabits per second, or roughly 25 times faster than today's standard cable modems. The technology, called DOCSIS 3.0, was developed by the cable industry's research arm, Cable Television Laboratories.

Lurker251 05-10-07, 12:01 AM Hi Adelmonxi!
Thanks for the post. I'm OK for cables (just placed an order w/ Monoprice today :) ). I agree w/ your assessment on pricing, that's why I'm currently weighting my options.
pio!pio! 05-10-07, 12:39 AM I have Time Warner in Downey and ever since they took over Comcast, I got more hd channels
1) Universal HD
2) Music HD
3) FSN HD - always blank?
4) HDnet
5) HDnet movies (i think)
and now
6) Mojo HD
7) ESPN2 HD
so i'm pretty happy with it...
----------------
QUESTION THOUGH
In the Downey region, they turn 5C encryption on over the firewire port for non local channels..they did it when it was still Comcast about 1.5 years ago..
I'm moving to Fullerton..can any TWC customers in the Fullerton area (formerly Adelphia) comment on 5C encryption over firewire?
Thanks
pio!pio! 05-10-07, 12:48 AM Another Q:
I setup Battlestar Galactica to a series record on my DVR on Universal HD...but it never records, instead recording the SD versions on SciFi..what gives?
Hi all,
Does anybody here record the Tonight Show on a regular basis? I am having weird trouble. I tried erasing and reprogramming the event, no help. I have it set to record only new on channel 404, 11:35PM and keep two. It has decided to keep them all and fill the hard disk. This is a recent change. I have the 6416 ///. Can someone verify this weirdness?? Thanks!
Truckondo 05-11-07, 12:11 AM Channel 407 in Huntington Beach is acting crazy tonight. My GF was watching Ugly Betty and it had some ugly picture dropouts every 5 min. Anyone else having issues?
Lurker251 05-11-07, 12:38 AM Just a quick update.
Decided to do the upgrade to test out my new KDL40XBR2 (still in the 30 day returnable period). Picked up a TWC HDTV DVR (Series 3400) this afternoon, decided to get the HDTV tier too for variety in testing period. Monoprice cables arrived in the mail today as well (great timing).
Plugged in everything. WOW! Lightbulb moment. :D I now know what HDTV really means.
(OT: got the Philips DVP 5982 yesterday, plugged in via component cables last night. PQ was ok, nothing to shout 'bout. Will be trying out the Monoprice HDMI cable this weekend.)
Happy HDTV'ing
markt170 05-11-07, 01:02 AM TNT -- Utah v. Golden State:
Weird problem. TNT-HD has been working fine, except the first two games of this series, which I recorded on the Moxi, I got no sound during the game, half-time and post-game shows, but I did get sound during most of the commercials. This is the only time this has happened. Can anyone explain what happened. Is there something I could have done or was it the broadcast or the cable. (My sound from Moxi comes via digital optical connection in my receiver.)
Adelmoxi 05-11-07, 08:30 PM hey peoples,
well ... this might be my last post, I just singed up for Dish Network(1 ViP 622 HD-DVR and 1 sd receiver with AT 100+HD) hopefully this will be better than TWC, as I was paying $55.77 (Moto 6416 DVR and Verity and HD tiers) NO premiums NO HSI ONLY cable outlet in the house) and the install is Sunday morning. I'll keep you guys posted on how it goes, and hop fully TWC will STOP THE PRICE HIKES!!!!!!!!!!!(but in all fairness, the FCC has a role to play in it also).
I cancelled TWC TV a few days ago. I went with a TiVo S3 and OTA (free) programming only since that is about 90% of what I watch anyway. That along with a Blockbuster Online subscription that I've had for a while should be sufficient, we will see.
I did keep TWC for my internet.
DSperber 05-12-07, 01:46 AM I just bit the bullet and added TWC digital telephone to my service. Now I'm a triple-service customer.
TWC's telephone package for 2-lines (and all commonly provided calling features, plus unlimited long distance in US and Canada) will cost me about $71/month in "steady state" (i.e. after promotional discounts cease). I was paying about $92/month for two lines from Verizon plus unlimited long distance in US only from Sprint.
Because I'm now a triple-customer, they threw in about $225 worth of discounts and free months over the next 12 months (on cable TV and Internet and $29.95/month for my main phone line instead of the regular $39.95, second "basic" line being $24.95 always).
So that's a savings of about $20/month on phone costs plus $225 more over the next 12 months in promotional discounts and freebies.
Add to that my savings of about $15/month on the cable TV side by recently giving up my Comcast Digital Platinum legacy pricing and converting to TWC tiered pricing, choosing only the HD tier and HBO/SHO over the basic service (giving up all other optional non-HD channel packages which I never watch via cable but instead watch on D*, though I used to pay for it with Digital Platinum).
I honestly have not had any horror stories about the TWC conversion. And it's costing me less, for more.
Next upgrade... I will trade in my 6412-II for a 6416-III. I need the little extra capacity.
Choochok 05-12-07, 08:17 PM Does anyone in Northridge area get ESPN2 with cablecard? It said a cable box is required on mine.
Adelmoxi 05-13-07, 01:02 AM Hey all, just to let you guys know, their has been a $5.00 increase (my monthly dues went from $57.44 to $62.90).

Please keep us (me) posted. I'd really like to know what your thoughts are on your new services.
I only recently signed up with TWC (coupla months ago, I resisted getting cable for years) and most recently TWC HDTV (this week).
I am thoroughly enjoying my new TV w/ the new HDTV service, yet cost and quality of service plus channel selections are always present on my mind.
I'm looking at +$60 w/ my current TWC setup.
Question?
Does TWC have a standard policy of what HDTV DVR they hand out to ppl? I notice a lot of ppl mentioning the Motorola 6412(?) but not much about the Motorola 3400 series.
Is it geographical i.e. depending where one stays? Or depending on what stocks they have?
Thanks in advance
xSm0ker 05-14-07, 05:32 PM Anyone here have freeze ups.... during "24" last night?
Yes. Must have been a Ventura Co. thing.

To respond to your question of the geographical area for the HD-DVRS, yes it is. TWC has all digital headends (as I understand it) using 3400's and the analog and digital headends use 6400 HD-DVRS.
Yes. Must have been a Ventura Co. thing
Hopefully tonight it will be uneventful.....the freeze ups that is...

I'm assuming you mean ESPN2-HD? you will have to fight it out with TWC, i had a cablecard when they added KCAL-HD (early FEB) and it showed me the same screen, it took an awful lot of complaining and threatening to go to the FCC and Franchise board to get them to fix it, they will give you the run around for a while and say it's your/your tv's fault, but the problem is with the channel map on their end, mapping 425 to the wrong channel (the "you need a box" channel) for cablecard customers, at one point one of the techs even told me that cablecard customers weren't supposed to receive KCAL-HD, at which point i almost chased him out of my house with a knife
I am located in the San Fernando Valley (specifically I'm located in Van Nuys), and for the first time, I'm going to get cable or satellite, and I was wondering if you could offer your advice on good cable or satellite companies/services.
Which cable or satellite company has the most channels (both standard and HD channels)?
Which one has the best video/audio quality?
And which company offers the best value? Thanks guys.

There aren't too many choices. Verizon FiOS if it's available in your phone zone, Dish, DirectTV, or the local cable company (TimeWarner, Charter, whatever is in Van Nuys). The all have good points and drawbacks in terms of price and programming quality. They all have innumerable options for however much you want to receive including everything but a vacuum cleaner. The cable and phone company choices also include internet provision and telephone . Spend a little time and compare.

That's right. I got the same problem when they just added KCAL-HD, the tech told me the same thing. He even said TWC don't want people to use cablecard. I guess you have a cable box now. Oh well, look like nobody with cablecard get ESPN2-HD in this area.

The best research is first hand experience.
before signing a long term contract with a satellite service I would try out cable. Quality of service can vary one city block to the next. Heck even your next door neighbor may or may not have service issues with the local cable company while your experience is completely different.
Whatever you go with just remember once the promotional pricing ends it will be up to you if you decide you don't want to keep it. If you don't contact the company your bill will automatically reflect the price increase to the regular rate. So when doing your comparison shopping make sure it is comparing apples to apples.

Actually i don't have anything right now, but i did have a cablecard up until the end of march, they did get KCAL-HD (409) to work with the cablecard after about two weeks but it took a lot of arguing and screaming at people from TW, one of the things that was really frustrating was that KCAL-HD was coming through in the clear (116-4) the whole time, but wouldn't work with the cablecard, at one point they told me if i didn't want to get a box instead of a cablecard, i could always get an antenna to receive KCAL-HD; needless to say this drew lots of verbal abuse from me, i mean WTF, why am i paying for cable in the first place?
if i go back i'll probably get a BOX, or maybe a box AND a cablecard, i had a SA 8300HDDVR which did have a couple of nice features, like the HD-PIP with the ability to move/resize the PIP, unfortunately my TV's PIP can't put a program that uses the digital tuner in the PIP, so i can still put HD stuff in the PIP it just has to come in via component or HDMI
It appears that TWC is finally get their act together in Bradbury (near Glendora). Our signal levels are back to normal, no more frequent pixelation and audio drop-outs. My only beef at this point in time is the horrific performance of the HD-STB's. We have one HD-DVR and one regular HD-STB.
The HD-STB, silver Motorola one, will frequently stop responding to the remote and buffer all commands and then execute them all at once. Also for some strange reason instead of auto-tuning to channels in the Guide sometimes it brings up the additional information screen instead. Weird issues like this.
The HD-STB, 3416, simply has a crappy interface compared to the Moxi we used to have. It's garbage plain and simple. Things like scheduling a series to record should not be so damn complicated. It's definitely frustrating because the speed is better than the Moxi but the interface is far worse.

have you noticed something setteling about the price? I order Dish Network last week (because I was paying $57.44) but I canceled on the last minute( having faith in TW, but I later saw a my monthly price hike up to $62.90). Was this a bad move on my part?

That is certainly one man's opinion but I attended the same show and saw and heard LOTS about HD. Cable has nothing to be shy about when it comes to HD. If its really more HD (valuable...) that you want, then rant at the content providers. Cable providers are clamoring for more valuable HD channels to offer to put even further distance between themselves and the satellite guys.
http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/05/16/cable-providers-shun-hdtv-at-2007-cable-show/
The constant struggle for cable companies to crank out more HD channels with an increasingly limited amount of bandwidth rolled right on through the 2007 Cable Show conference in Las Vegas, as a keen attendee noticed a stark absence of HDTV boasting at an expo that would seemingly showcase the format. Mark Kersey noticed that cable providers at the show set up "absolutely zero breakout sessions devoted to cable HD," and moreover, "virtually none of the high-powered panelists in the general sessions even uttered the word HDTV." His perception was that providers seemed "ashamed" of their offerings in comparison to FiOS and satellite, but considering all the flack the dishes have taken for crippling their HD feeds and making grandiose promises that we've yet to see realized, it's not like the other guys are really showing anyone up. Of course, cable has also been scolded a time or two about subpar HD quality, but the reality is that breakthroughs such as OCAP and channel bonding were able to steal the show due to the newsworthy nature of, say, hitting 150Mbps over copper. That said, we're certainly looking forward to the day when cable (or any other medium, actually) goes out of its way to put hordes of HD offerings up on a pedestal.
AT&T, Comcast: How Much Bandwidth is Enough?
Posted on May 14th, 2007
Mark Milliman submits: Ah, the glory days when we proclaimed at AT&T (T) that 56 Kbit/s was all the bandwidth a business would ever need. A few years later we updated that cap to a T1 or 1.544 Mbit/s. Lately, The New AT&T proclaims that 35 Mbit/s is enough bandwidth for your TV, phone, and Internet access. Is it?
Comcast (CMCSA) does not think so. Earlier this week, Brian Roberts, CEO of Comcast, demonstrated Internet access speeds of 150 Mbit/s at The Cable Show in Las Vegas. The demonstration utilized the DOCSIS 3.0 standard to bond together the equivalent of 4 analog TV channels to obtain the desired bandwidth for the demonstration. They plan on reclaiming bandwidth on the plant to offer 100 Mbit/s Internet access to homes by moving to an all digital plant, utilizing switched digital video, reclaiming bandwidth from legacy applications, and implementing MPEG-4 compression according to Tony Werner, Comcast's CTO. Comcast is not resting on its laurels in the triple-play arms race.
Additionally, Comcast will have to incorporate node splits to ensure enough bandwidth to each home. Splitting a node costs between $3.35 to $26 per home passed depending on they way that they actually split a node. About 65% of those splits are of the "logical" type that cost $3.35. A small cost compared with some of the telcos upgrade plans.
Let's compare these figures to the cost of AT&T's Project Lightspeed. Also this week, AT&T announced that the capital expenditure of Project Lightspeed would increase from $4.6B to $6.5B and the number of homes passed to 18 million; down a million homes. That announcement increased price per home passed to $361 which is now about half the cost per home passed of Verizon's FiOS project that is delivering 50 Mbit/s Internet access alone. To reduce capital expenditures, AT&T relies on a fiber to the curb approach and existing copper cable for the last thousand feet which limits bandwidth to the home.
In addition to the cost, AT&T depends on a completely switched digital video network to squeeze the most out of the limited bandwidth over their aging copper plant. The Microsoft (MSFT) software that powers their IP-TV network has proven to be less than reliable to date. Add this up: a totally new switched digital video network, the limitations of a copper infrastructure, and a multi-billion dollar build-out for a network that is barely sufficient to meet today's triple-play needs.
Contrast this risky strategy with Comcast's low cost, high bandwidth network and you would think that the market would be going crazy for Comcast stock. The opposite is true. AT&T's stock keeps rising while Comcast's is holding steady after a setback in January. The market is fixated on short-term numbers instead of the long-term picture.
In the triple-play arms race, Comcast is better suited to capture a greater market share with faster Internet access, a greater selection of HDTV programming, more responsive VOD, cheaper voice services, and an integrated suite of packages ala Zimbra. Despite what Om Malik says, Comcast is delivering the innovation to make it a triple-play market leader.

My 6416 will do this at times as well. Not so often that it is overly annoying but it is frustrating at times.
Last night something strange happened, all of a sudden I lost picture (still getting sound) and it wouldn't respond to commands. Then, it shut itself off and rebooted. Luckily, there does not seem to be any residual issues at this point. Of course, I lost all programming info and this needs to fill up again. Also, I lost a couple of minutes of Lost. (Luckily, basically nothing happened on Lost last night!)
Has anything like this happened to anyone else?
Choochok 05-18-07, 10:53 AM i had the same problem when they added KCALHD, i could pick it up fine through clear-qam, but it wouldn't come in using the cable card, which is extra retarded considering that it's unencrypted, you'll probably need to make a huge stink about it in addition to just calling TW's tech support, the problem didnt get fixed for me until i contacted Patricia Rockenwagner patricia.rockenwagner@twcable.com and Kieth Vaugn (818-700-5969 that's the number he left but when i called back the person who answered was clueless), basically you need to find someone who has a clue what a channel map is, and tell them that channel 425 which should be ESPN2HD, is incorrectly mapped to the "You Need A Digital Receiver" screen, the problem is that most of the peons you will talk to over the phone or they will send to your house have no idea what that means, the most frustrating part is they will continue to say the problem is on your end, and insist on sending a tech, if you're lucky the tech will recognize the problem and hopefully call someone in TW's engineering dept, the tech they sent for my KCAL problem actually told me, while on the phone with someone else at TW, that i wasn't supposed to get KCALHD and/or they didn't want cablecard users to get it as a way to convince people to get STB's, i almost had to find a place to hide his body after he told me this, but i guess anything can pass for service these days
twelvepbrs - Thanks for the info. I'll try that e-mail address, at least... to exercise my right. Knowing real well that TWC doesn't care, they want to get rid of cablecard.
I have another hurdle with the cablecard as well. I have a JVC 56FN97 TV that does not keep the display setting (brightness, picture..etc.) if the TV is unplugged. TWC cablecard needs to be rebooted by unplugging the tv very often. I have to reset my tv every times for every input after rebooted. That is a pain in the neck, very annoying. TWC will probably win over me pretty soon.

Hey bruce, I was just about to post this. I was recording both the Cavs/Nets and Suns/Spurs. I do this as I can watch both games in less than 3 hours. I would estimate that it switched over to espn2 at about 4:35 and hasn't changed back since. I haven't bothered to call TWC. I'm assuming it's an ESPN issue. If you hear otherwise, let us know. The game's available in sd on 39 and 252 - looks a lot worse in sd however.
alaskaman1666 05-18-07, 10:20 PM My 6416 will do this at times as well.
Yes; happened to me too.
I thought that the power had been interrupted.
I have TW in Pomona, California.
I have also noted the "won't respond to commands then pow they all execute".
I also seem to have audio problems (motorboating?) through HDMI to tv.

(Motorola 6416 HDDVR)
dylan24 05-18-07, 10:21 PM The game's back on 424. Of course. now, I have to watch all the commercials and lost all the Cavs/Nets (seems like that game was pretty uneventful anyways.)
bruce73 05-18-07, 10:22 PM Hi, Dylan. Yeah, I'm watching on 252. Not the best, but better than nothing.
EDIT: Thank God it's back. The HD deprivation was killing me. :D I missed the Cavs game. Have to catch the highlights later. Thanks for the heads up.
PictureCutter 05-18-07, 10:57 PM I've been having a problem the past few days that I can't figure out how to Fix. I'm in Woodland Hills and I have an SA-8300HD and the Baseball Package. On the MLB HD Channel 732, I'm only getting a grey picture, but the sound is good. I've tried resetting the box and that didn't work. This is the only channel where this happens.... does anyone else have this problem?

No audio problems for me.
DSperber 05-19-07, 02:06 AM This problem started a while ago, and I finally reported it to TWC yesterday. The supervisor said she's having the same problem at her house on one of her two DVR's. The second one is unaffected.
I go into OnDemand, navigate to "PREMIUM" and select. And in the Premium sub-menu there are NO PREMIUM CHANNELS! The only thing displayed is "Here! On Demand".
I don't see HBO, SHO, Stern, etc... all of which I should have.
This has been escalated, but so far two days since the ticket was opened I still have no OnDemand Premium choices.

dsperber, I can help you with this, just sent me a private message with you phone number and i'll try to get this fixed for you.
dogbliss 05-19-07, 11:19 PM  :( I could use some guidance and moral support, if you don't mind. My Moxi went dead after a power outage that we had out here in
Channel Islands Harbor- Oxnard on Monday night.
So anyway, TWC came out today and switched out the MOXI box with a 3416 I Motorola DVR
I pay for all the channels and everyone one of them but the HD ones look awful. They are grainy or mirror like with graininess , or have artifacts. Some channels look glassy and grainy at the same time. Also the people on all my channels (HD excluded) were short wide and squatty.
My TV is the Mitsubishi WS=65313. (65in wide screen) It looks like I fixed the squatty wide people because I pulled out the cords on the back of my TV that were in the composite holes and put the cord in the DVI holes. That helped.
But what is up with the picture on all standard channels? Is anyone else having this problem? And can you help me or direct me to some help? I am sick about this. Why am I paying for all these channels if they are going to look like this? The DVR was just switched out today and I am already disillusioned. This can not be normal. I can not believe that everyone has been watching their tv's like this and putting up with it. If I had the cash I would buy the HD TiVo, in a sec. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do? I would so appreciate any help or feedback you may have.
Thanks in advance

Sounds like a mismatch between how you hooked up the DVR and the TV's capabilities. What is the cable(s) that is going from the DVR to the TV? Also didn't the cable guy hook this up and confirm you picture was perfect???
Next what is the capability of the Mits? 720p 1080i or what? Is it a DLP or CRT based projector?
Last is what the box is outputting. To get to the menu...
The TV should be on the box off. Press the menu button on the box. That brings up the service menu and you can use the directionals to configure the box to match the TV.

Channel Islands Harbor- Oxnard on Monday night.
So anyway, TWC came out today and switched out the MOXI box with a 3416 I Motorola DVRLet's go slowly... a bit of basic information first.
As far as digital connections that support optimal video and HD, the 3416 only has HDMI output and your TV only has DVI. So I assume you have an HDMI-to-DVI cable or adapter. Yes? You should use this connection method as it will provide the best possible results.
Also, when you said you pulled out the "composite" video cables, is that really how you had the DVR connected to the TV before trying the DVI/HDMI approach? Red/white/yellow (where yellow is the "composite" video cable)? Or just the yellow cable from DVR to TV, with audio going perhaps from the DVR to an external receiver for surround sound?
Or do you really mean "component" video cables... i.e red, blue, green from DVR to TV?
Also, did you set up your DVR to specify that you have a 16:9 set? With the TV on and the DVI/HDMI connection in place, power off the DVR and then immediately push the MENU button on the front of the DVR (not the remote). You will get a SETUP screen on your TV. Be sure that the first setting shows 16:9.
Then, I believe the 65313 supports 1080i. So set the 3416 to put out 1080i in the "HDMI/YPbPr" setting.
Then, be sure the 4:3 override option is set to "480i" and not "STRETCH".
This should get the 3416 set properly for putting out 16:9 HD (and 4:3 SD in 4:3 non-stretched presentation, with black bars on left and right). Output of everything through HDMI/DVI should look acceptable, including SD channels.
dogbliss 05-20-07, 07:01 PM Thanks so much. I will go out today and by the HDMI to DVI adapter because my Mitsu does not have HDMI. Everything else has been programmed as you said except I have the 4:3 override off instead of on 430i. I had it on 430i originally but it was making me crazy having to keep changing the screen formats on the standard channels. With the 4:30 override set to off I do not have that problem. Will buying the HDMI cable adapter make a difference if I go back and have the 4:30 overide set to 430i?
Your info was so helpful, D Sperber. Thanks! :)
DSperber 05-21-07, 02:26 AM Thanks so much. I will go out today and by the HDMI to DVI adapter because my Mitsu does not have HDMI. Will buying the HDMI cable adapter make a difference if I go back and have the 4:30 overide set to 430i?Well actually, I think maybe OFF is the better option given what you're now describing happened when you tried 480i. But it may be because of what your TV is doing, more than what the DVR is doing. Obviously, I'm sympathetic to your annoyance if the 4:3 SD picture is stretched or otherwise unacceptable. My taste is to have the pillar bars on left and right and leave the 4:3 picture always un-stretched and displayed as it should be... 4:3. That would be my goal, and it sounds like it's yours too. If OFF gave you that then by all means set it that way. I'm not familiar with your TV and how you've got it set up, nor how it would interact with the DVR settings.
Anyway, it looks like there might be an additional setup option in your DVR for "HDMI Mode". Looks like you select DVI if you're going to use the HDMI-to-DVI adapter approach, to connect the HDMI DVR to the DVI TV.
Apparently, if you're only now going out to get a HDMI-to-DVI adapter, then you clearly have never used that method of connection from DVR to your TV before... since you would not have been able to connect the two devices without it. I suspect once you go to that connection your picture and results will be quite different from what you've experienced up until now. But please report what happens.
twelvepbrs 05-21-07, 05:45 PM is there a massive internet (HSI) outage right now?
it was out at my inlaws in rancho cucamonga all day yesterday
and when i got home to canoga park last night around 8:00 PM it was also out at my apartment, and is still out, it was also out at the diner down the street (almost in chatsworth) that has free wireless
if anyone else's HSI is out please raise your hand and include your location and the time you noticed it was out
(obviously this is a little bit of a strange request since if your HSI is out, how the hell are you going to read/post, but for those of you who check AVS at work/other places)
mine was out intermittently for most of the evening. Moorpark, Ca.
twelvepbrs 05-22-07, 06:52 PM mine was out intermittently for most of the evening. Moorpark, Ca.
that jackasses at TW told me it was due to an outage, but it was actually that the crappy cable-modem they were renting me had died, which i pretty much had to figure out on my own
for the most part ( lucky me ) my cable modem has been without issue as well as the rr service. I know all too well the headaches when calling those baboons. I spoke with a woman up in Valencia once, she was the exception to the rule, curtious and knew what she was talking about. She told me they were expanding so quickly and the new employees were really awful.. If you ever get in a bind...call the office in Santa Clarita, CA. The office in Newbury Park is useless.

jasonvr 05-23-07, 05:01 PM What is the difference between the Motorola 6416 and the 3416 dvr?
3416 is for All Digital head-ends and therefore has no analog tuner. 6416 if for head-ends that are both analog and digital.
Adelmoxi 05-23-07, 08:42 PM I just bit the bullet and added TWC digital telephone to my service.
How is their digital phone service now that you have had it for a couple of weeks? I am considering doing the same (almost only with 1 line). Verizon has had recent price hikes, so I may add RR and digital phone, hopefully it comes out cheaper. This what I was quoted over the phone:
- My current digital cable setup at $57.44( 1 6416 p3 HD-DVR+ Verity and HD digital ties).
- Road Runner @ $29.95 for 12 months
- Digital Phone Unlimited @ $29.95 for 12 months
Does nthis pricing structure sound right?

Does this pricing structure sound right?Well the price you show for digital cable seems low. Is this a promotional rate? Are they throwing in some discount over your regular cost for some number of months? Otherwise, the other promotional rates sound right... what is the speed they're providing in that Road Runner offer?
Anyway, I still don't have it installed yet. The earliest they could give me was June 5, so I've been waiting since back when I first ordered it to actually try it.
I forgot to ask them if a FAX machine would still work just as it always did. My friend has digital phone from Charter and her analog answering machine still works fine, so I'm thinking all analog devices in the house simply don't know the difference under the covers, through the magic of this Arris modem they use.
So... nothing to report just yet. I've still got my fingers crossed that they won't call me with two days to go and say "oh, we're sorry... we just discovered that your building hasn't been facilitated as we'd thought. Forget it."

talking out of my arse here, but i would expect a fax machine to have issues with VoIP, since i believe a fax machine uses more bandwidth on an analog POTS line, than i believe is available on a VoIP line

Vonage claims that a fax machine works with their service (link (http://vonage.com/help.php?article=134&category=27&nav=2) ). Come to think of it, I think I have hooked up my fax machine (HP All in one device) to my Vonage line on occasion to send a fax and it worked fine.
Paladin677 05-24-07, 04:17 PM Yeah, fax should work ok. I send/receive faxes using my Vonage service. In fact Vonage offers a dedicated fax line you can bundle with your service at a discount.

It is simply a magic box, which plugs into one phone jack in your house and all of your other analog phones and phone devices (including FAX, I'm hoping and guessing) also continue to plug into their own other phone jacks and magically get picked up by the modem and put out over the cable.
In other words, there is supposed to be ZERO impact on your current phones... specifically because it is NOT VOIP.

well what the heck is it? i'm pretty darn sure it's NOT analog, i'm sure it's digital, and therefore i'm pretty sure there's some kind of compression involved, i guess it's not technically VoIP though
Paladin677 05-24-07, 10:35 PM I believe the distinction they are making is that the voice data never touches the internet but remains in their data network before reaching the PSTN. It's still VOIP but not Voice over the internet.

I don't know what this means. I'm in Encino, and I have cable. Thinking about changing out my Moxi for the non-moxi dvr, and I see there are two that they provide. Does it matter which one they provide?

Ouch, sounds like a center channel issue. If you're listening to the digital audio, hook up to the red/white and see if the analog track survived. At least you can finish the show. :(

Same here, got the rear and L+R but no center, using the red and whites I heard it all. I noticed that NBC-HD went into SD mode to fix the audio for a few minutes before going back to HD. This used to happen a lot during Las Vegas as well last season.

Hello all, I'm new here on the recommendation of someone at tivocommunity. I had the same problem Rob, and it happened once before a week or two ago during "Criminal Minds".
I've got a very simple setup with an HD Tivo connected directly to my sony lcd rear proj via HDMI. No receiver or other components. Below is my recap I posted up at tivocommunity:
Lately my S3 has developed this very unusual audio problem. So far it's only happened twice, both programs were HD and being viewed as recordings not live. In short, the dialog track drops out for a period of several minutes. I don't lose sound entirely, as I can still hear the background (ambience, music, sound effects). Just as randomly as it disappears, it comes back.
This happened first during an episode of "Criminal Minds" a couple weeks ago. The section affected was the opening scene before the title roll. Once the title ran the commercials aired with normal audio and when the program resumed everything was back to normal.
Tonight it just happened again while I was watching last nights episode of "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip". Unlike the first time, this time the audio dropped in the middle of a scene that had started off fine. It persisted until a commercial break, the commercials were again normal, and then when the program resumed it dropped out again. A few minutes later the program audio finally returned to normal.
These are on two different networks, on different nights.
In a vaguely similar situation, I lost *all* audio while watching another HD show the other evening, but jumping back in the buffer a few times caused it to return. However, in both these cases that wouldn't fix the dropout nor would exiting and restarting the program.
In both cases the audio would consistently drop out and return at the same points.
My setup is very simple: S3 connected to the TV by HDMI. No recievers or other components.
Has anyone had similar problems, or heard of anything that would cause this? A faulty cable is the only thing that makes sense to me, but considering that I'm not losing *all* audio, and that it's only happening in specific programs at specific times leads me to believe it's something else.
Any ideas how to fix it? As a workaround, I've been lucky that the programs had CC data, so I turned that on until the dialog returned.
I agree that it sounds like a center channel issue, guess I'm just unlucky that affects me because of the HDMI connection even though I'm not using any components that actually utilize the seperate channels.
What's weird to me is that this has just recently started, making me think it was a problem with the Tivo. I've been using the Tivo to watch HD since last fall and just these last few weeks have these audio problems appeared for the first time.
hope my post helps others who were as confused as me ;)

the audio drop out was not a TWC issue. I was watching Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip ota from KNBC and noticed right away when dialog disappeared and was left listening to sfx.
AVS_MVP 05-26-07, 02:30 PM Anybody experiencing macro blocking on FSN HD channel 413? Anytime the camera moves the picture starts to break up. I'm in Simi Valley with a Motorola 3416.
If a customer only has internet service through TWC, do basic cable channels come through the line as well without additional charges?
Its not supposed to, the installer should put a video trap on your drop to cut off the frequencies from channel 2-70 to prevent that. But many data only customer lines don't get that installed. If not, then you'll be able to see the analog channels and the in the clear QAM channels just like everyone else.
http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/4845447-description.html
Looks like they did put a video trap. If it is removed can they detect it? Even though the thought has crossed my mind, I'm not planning on doing it, just curious.
I do wish TWC would offer a basic analog (2-99) cable package at around $14.99 per month for my area. Currently they said basic analog service, no cable box would cost me the same as digital cable if not more for the basic monthly service, makes no sense.

NBC is hands-down the worst at production hiccup's/quality IMHO
Did anyone watching the Indy 500 on ABC HD hear Jim Nabors sing "Back Home Again..."??? I didn't realize it wasn't just an intro until the announcer said Jim sounded great!   Daughtry's mike was off too for the first few seconds! But, the whole song! Yieeee!
I was watching via cable card, no 5.1 system, just TV speakers!
xSm0ker 05-27-07, 05:19 PM I recently noticed the DVR option is missing from my Quick Menu and Menu. I have no way of getting to my series priorities or manual recording. I called TWC and they will send someone out to replace it. Any one else missing this option? I don't think anything is wrong with the box.
Well what do you know. After all the F* ups by Time Warner Cable, you'd think they might try to get things right. Well, you'd be wrong.
Tonight I called to drop HBO (Bill Maher finished his season) and the Variety tier. I was informed there is a $1.99 fee to drop a channel(s).
Are they kidding?!? Has anyone run into this before? I reminded the lovely young lady on the phone that FiOS is coming to my neighborhood soon, and she "waved" the fee. I'm sure, for this time only. I asked if there was a fee to add a channel, of course not!
another FEE!!! I'm on the phone with TWC trying to remove services and they tell me now there is $1.99 "assistance fee"....are you f-ing me?
I missed your post! Are they kidding!

Lurker251 05-29-07, 04:28 AM Update on post #3831 on 5/10/2007
Well it has been almost 3 week since I upgraded to a TWC HD-DVR, DCT 3416. Generally I'm pleased w/ the PQ of the HD channels, however I have noticed a 'picture shudder' on the Discovery HD channel lately (a horizontal strip across the picture seems to 'shudder' intermitenently). But that's a separate issue.
My only frustration stemming from the pathetic Motorola DCT 3416 interface  , coming from a S2, the DCT 3416 paled in comparison. Hence it brings me to my current quest...S3
The current S3 promo is very attractive.
What are the pros vs cons in getting a S3 for my current TWC cable? Any advice would be appreciated.
I don't use PPV nor OnDemand. So going the CableCARD route shouldn't be a problem.
I've read posts where ppl had issues with getting KCAL-HD, and given the run around by TWC techies. (Apparently a channel 425 mapping issue?!).
I'm concerned about compatiblilty of the TWC CableCARDS w/ the S3. I've read posts where installation was a breeze in some cases and problematical in others.
I just finishing reading a few threads in the TC S3 forum but still wanted to get AVS members take.
From a cost point of view: returning the DCT 3416 that's less $13.XX a month but add the cost of 2 x CableCARDS $5.xx approx.
Add S3 monthlys (which imho is worth it for a superior, user-friendly interface).
(Price of S3 not taken into consideration as it's something I OWN as opposed to leasing a receiver from TWC).
Thanks in advance :)
ronaldk988 05-29-07, 01:17 PM Thanks so much for this. I actually called TWC today to see if they had such a list and of coure they say they don't. OF COURSE THEY HAVE THIS LIST. Otherwise how would they know how to MAP their cable boxes!!!!!
Thanks
Ron
SPDICKEY 05-30-07, 12:13 AM Looks like they did put a video trap. If it is removed can they detect it? Even though the thought has crossed my mind, I'm not planning on doing it, just curious.
The removal of the equipment would be found after a physical audit of their plant near your home. How often someone goes out and counts every single drop is unknown by me, but could happen once every few years or so.
I do wish TWC would offer a basic analog (2-99) cable package at around $14.99 per month for my area. Currently they said basic analog service, no cable box would cost me the same as digital cable if not more for the basic monthly service, makes no sense.
They do offer an life line service near the cost you suggested. You get channels 2-36 or so. Its secured by traps very similar to the one used to trap out all the video. This is all old-fashioned cable tech.
Adelmoxi 05-30-07, 02:27 PM For any of you peoples with a MOXI, I've read(in the MOXI forum) that TWC is in testing with 4.1. Do you think it will go through?

I'd head over to the tivo community forums (don't remember the URL off hand, but it's a simple Google search away). I've gone there several times recently while trying to decide if I wanted to buy the S3. There's plenty of knowledgable people over there.

What is MOXI?
jasonvr 05-30-07, 11:51 PM What is MOXI?
Moxi is a HD DVR that is available from TWC. I believe it is mostly (if not entirely) former Adelphia customers in what are now TWC markets. It is also used by other systems, such as Comcast. Take a look at this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=412846)

I at least have minor hope now. Based on the trials an tribulations that the Comcast folks have gone thru and the fact that Adelphia was dead last to get the 3.2 update, I'm not holding my breath. If my Moxi survives long enough to receive the update, I'll be ecstatic. Of course, just to spite me, the very next day it will either die or TWC will tell me they are taking it back
What is MOXI?
You have to have a lot of it to ask! ;)

Adelmoxi 06-01-07, 11:48 PM How many of you guys will get a Cable Card MOXI, when they come out later this sumer? I am EXCITED but know TWC wil make it difficult for us, like not suppling the next gen Cable Cards (M-card). Now I feel what some of you may have felt anticipating the release of the S3 Tivo's.
Moxi has a nice looking interface but lacks many of the features I require from a DVR.

Still circling. More as news develops.

SPDICKEY 06-05-07, 12:51 PM Time Warner Boasts of ‘Virtually Unlimited’ HDTV Capacity
Cable Operator to Launched Switched-Digital-Video Technology in One-Half of Systems By Year-End
By Steve Donohue -- Multichannel News, 6/4/2007 10:41:00 PM
Boasting that it will be able to boost channel capacity to carry more HD networks, Time Warner Cable plans to deploy switched-digital-video technology on one-half of its systems nationwide by the end of 2007, chief operating officer Landel Hobbs said Tuesday.
Hobbs acknowledged that Time Warner’s direct-broadcast satellite rivals such as DirecTV have done an effective job of marketing HDTV offerings. “Shame on us because we haven’t really done a good job of marketing [HDTV],” Hobbs said at a Deutche Bank Securities conference in New York Monday.
But he added that SDV technology -- which allows Time Warner and other cable providers to deliver channels to subscribers based on demand, rather than broadcasting hundreds of channels simultaneously -- will give Time Warner “virtually unlimited” HD capacity.

I was going to ask the same question, but about AT&T's new U-verse system. they went around my neighborhood last week door-to-door asking people to sign up. My neighbor did , but he doesn't have a HDTV.
He did say it took 3 hours and 9 service trucks to get it installed right.
I searched around and saw posts stating that HD was worse than TWC's Moxi, and SD was better. However, I'd like to know the difference in service is between what AT&T is offering versus the TWC 6412 dvr (besides having a larger hard drive than the 6412).

As far as I've heard it's just a firmware update as most existing digital boxes already have the hardware for upstream signaling.
hookbill 06-07-07, 09:03 AM Hi Guys.
First this has nothing to do with HD so I apologize for going off topic. I'm a displaced Dodger fan and I watch the team on MLB Extra Innings. Since I live in Northeast Ohio the games start about the time I go to bed so I record them and watch the next day.
When I went to put the game on this morning there was no game there. I have a TiVo S3 so I am able to see what problems may have occurred. According to my S3 it wasn't recorded because "No signal was available."
So I read the Times on line and I know they lost. :( I'm just curious to see if anyone out there watched the game on FOX Prime Ticket. This is the first time I've seen this happen, probably someone at InDemand forgot to throw a switch.
I think the game was on KCAL9 last night.

If you can order VOD then you have all you need. The system is a lot like the VOD streams, except they are live streams rather than held on a server. Only the node you are on will receive the digi-stream and your box will be authorized to receive it. That way the entire system is not "lit-up" with a channel that only a few people are watching, enabling bandwidth sharing across all the nodes.
However it takes a two-way box (non CableCard) to signal the headend that you want the channel sent to you. That has the S3 owners up in arms since they are one-way boxes. That's why I rent, as the cable cos. change things we get new boxes!

Time Warner Cable Mentor Program Aids Local Growth
By Mark R. Madler - 6/11/2007
San Fernando Valley Business Journal Staff
Time Warner Cable’s workplace diversity program is set-up to make those from different backgrounds feel included.
A mentoring component pairs up senior management with lower-level employees.
“We will be working with them to understand what they need, so they can continue to learn and to grow,” said Deborah Picciolo, president of the North Los Angeles division that includes the San Fernando Valley and one of the executives who will take part as a mentor.
In December 2006, Time Warner Cable started a 9-member diversity council to manage its inclusion efforts and set out priorities for employees and customers, Picciolo said.
The council has begun efforts to develop a management diversity training program that 75 percent of company leaders will complete by the end of 2007; an employee mentoring program; community outreach through events and volunteer activities; a supplier-diversity program to provide more opportunities to small, minority and women-owned businesses; and employee outreach that will include a new diversity and inclusion section to the new hire orientation class.
The makeup of the council reflects the different types of jobs Time Warner Cable has available, including upper management such as Picciolo, but also technical supervisors and marketing managers, said Patricia Rockenwagner, the regional vice president of communications.
The company also has a reputation for its community outreach programs.
According to M.C. Townsend, executive director of the Regional Black Chamber of Commerce of the San Fernando Valley, “Time Warner is an exemplary example of corporate responsibility in the community.” She went on to say that since the chamber’s inception more than seven years ago, they have financially supported chamber events, underwritten projects and have come through with volunteer help or materials the chamber needs.
Being a communications company, overcoming language barriers is also an important goal of the company.
When recruiting new employees, Time Warner goes into the Korean and Hispanic communities to insure that bilingual speakers are available when necessary, Picciolo said.
Language differences are also addressed in the company’s programming.
A package is available for shows broadcast in both English and Spanish. Asian-language
and Russian-language programming is also available in areas of the city with large populations speaking those languages.
“We’ve adjusted our programming to meet the needs of those communities,” Rockenwagner said.

Any opinions on whether this implies dynamic assigning of the QAM channels, a la the on-demand channels, which means channel content will be moving around randomly? If true, this would totally mess up my MythTV DVR, as I had to manually ID each QAM channel to get the listings right.
BTW, thanks, HowardV, for the grunt work in cataloging the QAM channels. Unfortunately I saw the post only a couple days after I did a partial survey myself. I'm on Van Nuys TWC and everything pretty much matches up; it basically confirms that I'm not missing any hidden gems. I notice, though, that I'm also getting KYET, which is ABC channel 3 from Santa Barbara (!). I'm not even sure that regular digital cable with the STB even carries that.
Thanks.
Pye in LA 06-10-07, 11:59 PM Any idea why I'm not seeing the Tony Awards (CBS) in HD? It's pillared SD.
West Hollywood.

Fred C. Dobbs 06-11-07, 06:02 PM I'm thinking of ditching TW's Motorola box for a Tivo with cable cards.
Any horror (or success) stories about transition?
thanks.
WeHoMyke 06-11-07, 09:46 PM There is a long thread about Cable Cards and Time Warner in the tivocommunity.com (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=316313) fourm.
There is also a thread (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=354498&page=1&pp=30) about how Time Warner to deploy Switched Digital to 50% of their markets in 2007 and how it effects TIVO.
Hope that helps.

I haven't heard anything beyond "testing" (except of course the cheers of joy coming from the Charter people over in the Moxi thread.)
delrmx01 06-12-07, 05:59 PM Must be nice. Is TWC in fact no longer supplying the MOXIs to new customers? And eventually phase out the MOXI from their line up? At least this is what the reps are telling me from TWC.

My motto is "Never, ever, ever believe what the reps tell you". That doesn't mean that they aren't phasing them out (which I don't know), but the motto still holds true.
Thanks to Howard for the QAM channel list. It pretty much matches with my channels out here in La Habra but i'm missing a big chunk of the channels in the 80-'s (81-*, 82-*, etc.). Does this just mean my local TW office is more stingy on what channels they let out in the clear?
Also, thru the QAM, I get the HDPPV channel which currently shows a blank screen with HD PPV in big letters across it (no previews or anything). Would I be able to get HD PPV thru the QAM? I plan on ordering the upcoming UFC fight using a standard digital cable box (currently it's not connected to my TV since I'm using the QAM), but would prefer seeing it in HD. Would this be possible with the QAM and a standard digital box? Thanks.

As far as I remember, TW was phasing out Moxi's back in April but I never had mine replaced. And I highly doubt they will update our firmwares to the latest one simply because they don't plan on supporting it.
I'm tempted to exchagne my Moxi with the newer DVR's that have bigger hard drives. Recording the USOPEN on HD takes up a lot of hard drive space that I don't have on the Moxi.
Anyone have any thoughts on the Moxi vs. whatever DVR they will replace it with?

Now they (TWC) is mostly using the Motorola 3416. It has a 160GB drive. It's OK. MOXI will putting out a cable card unit later this year, but like TiVo you have to rent 2 cable cards and pay Digeo a rental too. The DVR will be the cheaper so;ution but the interface sux.
Chase265 06-14-07, 04:27 PM I just got TWC installed and they did give me the Motorola 3416, its ok...missing some features that I liked that Moxi had..but so far so good, the bigger drive is a bonus in my book.
PictureCutter 06-14-07, 05:47 PM I'm not sure if others have asked the same thing, but I can't find this information anywhere.....
I know that DirecTV is compressing HD with MPEG4 now, right? Does this mean that its quality is reduced when compared with what TWC is doing? Is the switching technology TWC will adopt going to make it so that the signal is compressed less in the future? I would love to hear if anyone thinks that DirecTV has better quality HD than Cable. Is DirecTV changing their compression technology for future improvement?
Any resources or comments would be appreciated.

I've been tempted also, as my Dad and a friend both have the 3416 that Joe mentioned, and I set up their systems. I much prefer the Moxi interface. And wife has learned how to use it. I hate the ads on the 3416 system. On the other hand, the unit is much more responsive and faster, whereas often on the Moxi, I have to hit the same key a couple times. Obviously, it holds more, but I've rarely had to delete things from the Moxi so I don't really need more storage. There's some question about whether the 3416 can skip 15 seconds like the Moxi -- I think there's a way to program that yourself. The best feature is that it shuts off, as opposed to the Moxi which is kind of noisy and bothersome in the bedroom. However, the 3416 reportedly has its share of quirks, and my Dad was told by TWC that the solution to one of those quirks (I forget which one) was to leave the unit on constantly. But even when it's on, it's still quieter than the Moxi. My understanding is that when I do want to make the switch, I just take my Moxies down to the cable office on Oxnard in Van Nuys and exchange them for the 3416s and then hook them up myself and call TWC to send the ping. Let us know if you switch and how the transition goes.

After calling TWC, I asked them whether or not they had any DVRs in stock at the office near my home... the lady said they did, but I was hesitant to believe her since last time I called and asked, they said they did but when I went there with my current DVR to exchange for a new one, they sent me home with my old DVR and an appointment for someone to come out the following week to install the new DVR. So I drove to the local office w/o my current DVR, and just asked whether or not they had them in stock. To my surprise, they do. They told me to bring in my current DVR tomorrow morning and they will exchange it with the newer model one.
I told them that I had the MOXI and they said "We are no longer supporting the Moxi, we aren't actively forcing people to replace them, but anyone with problems with their Moxis get the new DVR in exchange. " So I doubt you will be seeing any new firmware updates any time soon, if ever.
Although I do like Moxi's GUI, I still ultimately miss the standard Tivo/TV guide format. And in regards to the Moxi's remote, I had the same problem that you are describing. Is your Moxi sitting near a plasma or LCD TV? If it is, then an easy way to fix the unresponsiveness from the remote is to find a sheet of paper... and tape it over the clock area where the remote sensor is. Any piece of paper will work. Try it and let me know if that solves your problem.
So tomorrow I am going to replace my Moxi... and I will update on how its going.

I have 2 SA8300's one for the living room and one for the bedroom...when you turn off the power as suggested they make noise all night...if I keep it on the display fills the room with light...you only can turn it off if you shut the darn thing off ...it is noisier off then on....I have returned 2 boxes and both had that problem....one once cycled off quietly but when I added the other one for the bedroom and had it activated it started making noise....I love these boxes and I will unplug them if necessary....I have two LCD HD sets and after knowing what the DVR's do I am now hooked....anyone have a suggestion....I have tried rebooting and that worked on one....I know the hard drive is the reason for the noise but I am wondering do the non-HD boxes make noise too?
rdsport323 06-16-07, 12:26 AM Well, I finally traded in my Moxi today for the Motorola 3416. It was quick and easy... just handed them the old box, and they gave me the new one. After I got home, installation was quick, but a phone call to TWC was needed to activate the box. Once that was done, everything was peachy.
A few notes about the differences for me between the Moxi and 3416.
- Although I miss Moxi's GUI a LOT, the 3416's I-guide was a bit bland in comparison but since it has been so commonplace, learning how to navigate around it was simple.
-160gb of hard drive space vs. Moxi's which I believe had only 40gb(i might be wrong, 40 or 80)?...
-HDMI output on the 3416! Plus all the ports in the back, firewire, dvi, usb, ethernet were all enabled. Although you can't transfer/save shows you recorded onto a usb hard drive.
-I also liked the size of the 3416, which is about half the size of a Moxi.
-With the 3416, you can also program your remote to have 30 second fast forwarding, which I found to be quite nice
-the 3416 also comes with dual tuners, so you can record two shows at the same time and all that.. same with the Moxi.
-Heat from both boxes are roughly the same, I can't really tell since they both get fairly hot. The option of turning off the 3416 is nice also.
So overall, I'm pleased with the new DVR... only thing I really miss about the Moxi is just the GUI, and the clicking sounds =)
Quick question, anyone know how to force or make the box download a new program guide? My box was filling in the information but some channels are still showing up as "To Be Announced". I think a new d/l of the program guide would fix the problem. Any ideas?
DSperber 06-16-07, 01:21 AM Quick question, anyone know how to force or make the box download a new program guide? My box was filling in the information but some channels are still showing up as "To Be Announced". I think a new d/l of the program guide would fix the problem. Any ideas? It will be downloading the 2-weeks worth of Guide data for the next 3-5 days, before all of the "to be announced" cells finally get filled. There's no way to force it to happen (other than pulling the plug from the wall, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in... triggering a re-boot). It simply takes an unnecessarily long long long long long time to get all of the data. First few hours and first day of the Guide download pretty quickly. But the rest of the two weeks takes forever.
And even then, you might still have occasional TBA caused by the network itself (e.g. HBO), which simply hasn't provided TV Guide with the scheduled program yet.
I think this is the right forum... when setting up a series recording (Motorola 6416 III DVR) I found the right time slot and channel for the program (through the Search function) and selected New Only, This Channel Only, 3 episodes, and that's basically it - no other changes from the defaults. It so happens that some series air new episodes more than once/week in the same time slot (Tudors, Bill from Cincinnati, etc.) and all the new episodes, i.e Wed, Thurs, Sun, and saved to disk. This is not right, aka wrong, and I don't like it :p Am I missing how to setup the series recording or is the software lacking?

If it shows "new" it will be considered as satisfying "new only". Unfortunately, the entire week of showings of this episode is considered "new", as opposed to "repeat" which are for shows from past weeks or years.
Ideally, only the true first-run (e.g. Sunday night's 9PM showing) would have "new" in the Guide info. Later showings of that same episode in the first-run week would NOT have the word "new" in the info. Guide info for true repeats from some time in the past season(s) would have the word "repeat". This would allow the DVR to pick up a show on one-night only in a given week that has multiple encores of that first-run episode, and yet would also allow you the viewer to distinguish between an encore of a first-run episode and a re-play of some past repeat episode. Three kinds of info blurbs.
Anyway, the fault is with the TV Guide data, not with the 6416. And you have no solution... other than to manually check your upcoming DVR recordings every so often and if you see a mid-week series recording you don't want just go into that cell and push "don't record". You'll simply be inhibiting that particular recording, not the series recording instructions. Or, you can let it record and then just delete it.
Or, as I do, I just manually set recordings for those HBO/SHO series by browsing the Guide every week or so and clicking on the cell for Sunday night's showing (assuming it's not a repeat) to set "record" for that one single episode only. I don't have "series" recordings for those problem situations, as any circumvention or workaround is more annoying to me than simply setting the recordings directly through the Guide for the Sunday night showing... only. I can also always watch or record an encore later that week if I need to or want to.
Sorry. Can't give any other advice, until TV Guide comes up with a consistent 3-way info. Incidentally, same kind of thing happens on CW with "America's Next Top Model", where both the Wednesday first-run and Sunday encore are called "new". In this case I find it acceptable to live with a "series" recording so I don't miss a special 2-hour show or something, and manually un-record the Sunday showing, or just delete the Sunday recording if I overlooked un-recording it.
It's only a small annoyance, as you said. I have been letting each repeat yet new airing record so that I am sure not to miss anything. There is an advanced option on ReplayTVs, of which I own 3, that sets up series recording and allows me to select the particular day[s] of the week to record that time slot. The RTVs spoiled me.
DSperber 06-17-07, 10:08 AM It's only a small annoyance, as you said. I have been letting each repeat yet new airing record so that I am sure not to miss anything. There is an advanced option on ReplayTVs, of which I own 3, that sets up series recording and allows me to select the particular day[s] of the week to record that time slot. The RTVs spoiled me.On the other hand, giving the 6416 "free rein" (which works perfectly for normal non-repeated network-type series) and dealing with the occasional duplicates which occur mostly on premium channels (and sometimes on CW, as I mentioned with "ANTM") is a good thing, rather than trying to tie the hands of the DVR to limit it to one day of the week or a particular time slot.
While this might be an appropriate course of action for HBO-type series which only have one day/time for first run every week, some network shows (e.g. "Survivor") often are moved to another night (e.g. Wednesday) during March Madness or some other planned preemption. Given "free rein" the DVR will pick up that special oddball Wednesday presentation without your having to think about it. Limiting it to Thursday would have caused the missing of the Wednesday showing.
I realize this doesn't apply to the HBO story, but it's just yet one more consideration and motivation for just setting the "series" recording specifying "first run only" and forgetting about it. If you get an occasional duplicate, well so be it. Actually, because of many complaints to cable providers about just this subject I think the TV Guide data actually has improved... and may well look like my recommended "3-state info blurb" in many cases, greatly reducing or eliminating the number of unwanted duplicate recordings during that first-run week.
Anyway, I'm fully in agreement with you. This is an annoyance that seems like it could easily be solved... like the totally unreasonable 3-5 days needed to download 2-weeks worth of Guide data after a re-boot. Even with 1000 characters of info blurb per show (which is not reality), and the number of cells for 2-weeks and 1000 channels, at cable speeds it shouldn't take but maybe 15 minutes tops to retrieve all 2-weeks of that data... if it were sent at cable speeds, to an intelligent receiver from an intelligent sender. Reality actually has far less than 1000 characters per info blurb per show, and there are far less than 1000 channels... so it should be even faster. Clearly 3-5 days is simply ridiculous and can only be explained by poor design and/or programming. It can't possibly be a hardware limitation.
SoCal-Phenom 06-18-07, 12:20 AM Guys, I'm currently here in SoCal with Time Warner Cable HD on a sony XBR970. Yes, im impressed. But, I've never thought of switching to any other provider like directv, dish etc. Do certain providers have MORE HD channels? How about the resolution in general. For example, can the Direct HD channels look better than say Dish's HD channels?
What do you guys suggest is the best HDTV provider out there?
Thanks

OK, I know - channels are few in number and are falling, but it's hard to beat the full bandwidth original feeds for HBO-HD, Starz! HD, Showtime HD, and of course, Discovery HD Theater.
I'm not sure which of the consumer delivery methods compresses least; that may well be FIOS, I don't know.

kenglish 06-18-07, 07:10 AM Video Control....the video engineer has all the cameras, and the best monitor, too!
Seriously, though, it's hard to define "best" without saying "best at (what)"?
OTA will give you best quality on locals, since that's the source that Cable and Satellite get it from. Cable TV rates high for convenience, and has some of your locals, but not all. Satellite likes to claim they have "the most channels", but they use more compression, which may affect quality.
Neither Cable, Satellite, or fiber will carry everything your locals supply. Satellite can't carry every regional and niche network. Cable hasn't got enough BW to please everybody...especially when it has to provide a basic analog service, too.
So, in short, YMMV....check out the services you have available (DBS, CATV, OTA, etc), look at their channel lineup, and scan these forums for user comments.

FYI, Moxi DVR scheduling software has a duplicate episode check, so that if the same episode is listed multiple times in the schedule, it will only record one instance of it. For series that have no episode descriptions (Daily Show with Jon Stewart frequently falls into this category), 4.1 software ads a "timeslot" option, so that you can designate one particular time of day to record it, but as DSperber says, that can sometimes prevent the DVR from recording a program--say, if it's moved or been pre-empted.

What should I do and is their a way for them to fix this.
Choochok 06-19-07, 12:35 PM Is there any unencrypted QAM HD channel from TWC in Northridge - North Hills area? I'm thinking about buying a HDHomerun tuner. Will I be able to tune in any QAM channel to my PC?
Anybody out there have success in this area!!! Thanks.
DSperber 06-19-07, 03:53 PM They called yesterday to say that the takeover of my telephone number from Verizon had still not completed. So they've had to delay the installation two weeks, until June 19th.Well it's June 19th, and about an hour since I had my TWC digital telephone service installed. Yes, they showed up at around 11AM, just as promised (between 9AM and noon) and didn't take long to do their thing.
I had them simply replace my existing Motorola SB4100 modem with their Arris TM502G telephony modem, because I didn't want them to cut my existing cable run for a splitter as they were planning to do (ending up with two modems, with the new Arris modem dedicated strictly for telephony). I have a phone jack on the wall near the computer area so there was no problem to do what they had to do. So now the solitary Arris modem supports both my Internet access as well as my 2-line telephone service.
All of my other analog telephony devices around the house (two dial-up modems and a FAX machine) as well as all of existing 2-line my analog phones all appear to work perfectly. Very impressive.
Not only that, but the sound is EXCELLENT! No digitalization effect, no robotic A/D-A/D symptoms... just excellent analog sound. Remarkable. If anything, it is superior (clearer and a bit louder, and with no "noise floor" at all) to my previous Verizon sound.
All in all, an excellent adventure. And I still have my previous two phone numbers. I'll call both Verizon and Sprint (for Long Distance) in another hour or two to ensure that all services and accounts have been terminated.
Highly recommended, especially if you feel you're paying too much to your local phone company and Long Distance provider.
So far, so good.
markt170 06-20-07, 01:46 AM What do new channel logos on moxi mean? Many of my channels have new logos on the moxi menu. (Note: I'm not talking about the Logo channel, which I've deleted -- though I'm curious if they have a new logo.) Could this mean that TWC has provided me -- the seeming lone moxi holdout -- with a firmware upgrade?? Remind me how I check the firmware?
I thought of another reason to keep the Moxi. Most 3416 or 6416 users note that when they unplug the unit, it takes a long time for the program guide to come back. On weekends, I move a 32" LCD and one of my two Moxi's to my patio, and then move it back on Sunday night. That's a lot of unplugging, and I don't want to wait a full day for the program info to come back up.

I asked a similar question over on the Moxi thread. It seems that the change in logos is nationwide and thus is not at all related to any firmware updates (I know that I did not receive a firmware update when I received the new logos). :(
BTW, remember, you'll be lucky if the programming on the 3416/6416 comes back in a day. Most people report it is several days before it all comes back.

During the week I have 2-3 shows that tends to create duplicate recordings. I just leave the recording after I view it, instead of deleting. The machine will not record if the show is already there. When the next episode is recorded I delete the old one.

During the week I have 2-3 shows that tends to create duplicate recordings. I just leave the recording after I view it, instead of deleting. The machine will not record if the show is already there. When the next episode is recorded I delete the old one.
That would work. If it hadn't been for the 160GB [small] drive, and the 6416 III's refusla to offload via firewire, I would have thought of it, too
:p

MoxiGuy 06-21-07, 12:55 AM What do new channel logos on moxi mean? The logos were redesigned to bring them closer to the actual logo designs of the networks. (Many of those have evolved since the Moxi logos were first developed.)
markt170 06-22-07, 04:30 PM Re Moxi v. 3416
One more plus for Moxi: deleting the channels you never watch. Apparently on the 3416, you can't delete channels. Instead, you put the channels you watch on the list of favorites. But that adds one or two steps EVERY time you want to channel surf. For example, you go to guide, then hit favorites. If you just start scrolling, then you hit favorites. Has anyone programmed a remote control macro to avoid these multiple steps?

Same thing happens to me with The Tonight Show. I have it set for New and keep 2. It records all episodes and keeps them all! After being away for the week, I have a lot of Jay to watch! I've tried deleting and resetting the event, it just likes Jay A LOT!

Nice to see you're still out there, MG. How's life after Moxi? I keep on eye on your blog. (http://mickeleh.blogspot.com/) Good job! :)
Video Control....the video engineer has all the cameras, and the best monitor, too!
Not really! I work for one of the "Big 3" Network O&O stations in L.A., and no two monitors look the same. They are all bad. I told my supervisor that I would have a better chance at shading with monochromatic monitors. Why bother with Hi-def if you can't even get the colors right to begin.
Anyway just had to laugh and respond to your comment above!
Adelmoxi 06-25-07, 06:05 PM does anybody know if the eSATA port on the 6416 are functional to allow more storage capacity?
Blast Tyrant 06-25-07, 06:18 PM Hello, I hope I'm in the right forum for this.
I recently switched out my Moxi box for the newer Motorola box and I'm having a problem accessing On Demand programming.
Basically, when I try to access a free On Demand feature I'll get the opening shot and then the picture freezes. I can't play, FF, etc. For HBO On Demand, which I'm a subscriber for, I'll get the pop-up telling me to call TW to authorize my subscription.
I've called TW and they can't detect any problems. I've also exchanged the box just in case it was an equipment problem. I have a tech coming out on 7/1 to check it out, but I was just wondering if anyone else is having this problem. I'm in the NoHO/Studio City area.
Thanks.

I've run into this problem several times. TWC sent out a tech who did some rewiring and that did the trick BUT for another reason. OnDemand went out again a couple days later so I did the unfathomable... unplugged the A STB's power cord for a minute or two which made me lose the populated guide data but reset OnDemand. If you care as much as I about not losing the guide data, then call TWC and ask them to send a reauthorization signal to the box. It may turn the trick, but I'm pretty sure disconnection the power has the same effect.

I've already done all of the above but to no avail.
When I was at TW office exchanging the box someone commented on why they would have bulletproof glass at the cable co. :)
twelvepbrs 07-02-07, 03:43 AM The Big Lebowski is on KCAL in HD!!! :D
unfortunately it's in 4:3, but still looks pretty good, unfortunately i think they may have edited out a few things :(
Update:
It's definitely edited; apparently you can't say "johnson" on TV; as in "We'll cut off your johnson!" Sounds a lot cooler than "We'll cut off your toes!"

because i can't find my DVD copy, and it seems like they only cut one or two scenes, and the dubbing to cover up the F-word is actually pretty hilarious...
"This is what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps and feed him some scrambled eggs!!!"

The Big Lebowsky without the F word? What's the point? That's like watching a musical without the singing!

moeronn 07-03-07, 12:52 AM Well, I finally traded in my Moxi today for the Motorola 3416.
Any ideas?I was recently "forced" to swap out my Moxi for the 3416. TW must have canceled the activation of the Moxi, as I just had the message "There is a problem with the status of your account. Contact customer service..."blah blah. After several calls to CS where not one person knew what was going on I was told to bring in the unit to a local office. So I took it in to one that was open late afternoon on Saturday. This was an original TW office and they wouldn't even touch the Moxi. After another call to CS, we found we needed to swap for the 3416.
Long story not getting a little longer... I miss the Moxi interface and IR, 30 sec skip (which I need to look into how to do with 3416) and the 16x FF. The 3416 is more responsive and the guide is a little better. The extra HD space will be welcomed, but I haven't setup any recordings, yet. My 3416 doesn't have a DVI port, which I did have on the Moxi. I'm going to try and swap it for one with a DVI port.

Don't swap it! If your TV is DVI just get an HDMI-DVI cable from MonoPrice (above) you'll be better off, long run.

As for the HDMI->DVI adapter, I didn't even check to see if there was an HDMI port in the 3416. I'll have to look tonight.

The 3416 is HDMI.
Too Many Secrets 07-07-07, 07:50 PM Is there any unencrypted QAM HD channel from TWC in Northridge - North Hills area? I'm thinking about buying a HDHomerun tuner. Will I be able to tune in any QAM channel to my PC?
Anybody out there have success in this area!!! Thanks.
I'd like to know this too. I'm in 90022, any QAM? TIA
twelvepbrs 07-10-07, 12:48 AM anyone know what HD-DVR hardware TW will likely show up with if I sign up for new service in Torrance (90502)? also can someone confirm if TW in the Torrance area provides FSN-HD, ESPN2-HD and the CW in HD?
