absolutic 07-10-07, 09:31 AM Ok here is another solution to a problem where same episode records many times during a week.
If you know what time the show is every day or week, you can do the following: you can just tell your dvr to record (for example) Channel 512 every Wednesday between 10 and 11 PM. It takes longer to program it that way (I have 6416 box), but this way, you know it will only record what you need and not the same episode 5 other times the same week.
I am going to do it like that with Jay Leno right now because it keeps recording it twice, at 11:35PM and at 2 or 3 AM the same night. I've done it before with international channels that have no guide whatsoever. You are just telling dvr to record something on a channel at a certain time irrespective of what it is.
You go to Menu, then DVR, then I believe Scheduling Recording or new recording (I am not next to my dvr) and first it asks you to set up a day and a time and then it asks you which channel, and then u have an option to change it into a series recording as usual.

Too Many Secrets 07-12-07, 12:37 AM OK, I got the install today. I didn't want a DVR but they still gave me a Moxi, said that was all they had but I could exchange.
I see a lot of QAM in the clear channels. They scan for me, does anyone have a list? I saw one for WLA, but the numbers are different. Im in 90022. Any help?

That's a good way to do it despite being a little more work. I only checked out how but haven't actually setup a series recording yet. If there's a problem with it, I'll repost.

There's a built-in screensaver inside. It showed up in the last software update. Time until it kicks in is adjustable. The screensaver is only the TWC name and has a 4:3 AR. It doesn't look to be changeable.

Time Warner is no longer using these right?
Are they selling them themselves now and are they compatible with TW's system?
I seem to recall reading something about being able to buy the cable cards or somesuch in the near future.....is that what this product would be?

TWC is still using them (I've got one), but it may be limited to former Adelphia regions, not sure on that one.
gridiron_nut 07-13-07, 10:07 PM Anyone here know if ESPN Gameplan will be offered by TWC in Orange County/Southern California area? Their website makes no mention of it and the operators at TWC don't even know what ESPN Gameplan is. I'm dying to know! Especially since i'm relocating and I know Cox carries it--it impacts where I move to!

All of my HD channels are crapping out. Contant glitches with video and audio.

markt170 07-14-07, 04:49 PM I am planning to attend the Moxi event this Thursday, and I will report back here. As far as I know, Moxi's like mine still exist in the former Adelphia areas, but when things go wrong, TW replaces them with the other things. By the way, why don't the other things have some sort of catchy name? Motorola 3416 certainly isn't catchy -- which is ok if it works. I think the basic purpose of the Moxi event is to show off new devices that can be purchased directly by the consumer like Tivo. I'm sure the main question is whether it will be compatible with TW. I don't know why they'd have this event in Santa Monica in the middle of TW Land if it wasn't, but we'll see.
jordanfsl 07-15-07, 08:46 PM I was forced to change out my Moxi unit for a 3416, which I find to be annoying (what's with the ads!?!?)
Anyways, the old Moxi had the option to only display certain formats (480p, 720p, 1080i), and I checked 1080i only. Since this unit "automatically" selects the format, my TV goes dark for several seconds when switching between SD and HD programming. Any ideas??
TV is a 70" Sony XBR, receiver is a Denon 4306.
thanks!

Hiya and Thanks... I finally got ahold of someone from TWC who is supposed to e-mail once they finalize the contract. Apparently they had to renew some things and there might even be a channel devoted to HD games to be newly presented on ESPN Gameplan (the ABC regional primetime games).
I'll post the e-mail when I get it.

eddy_winds 07-15-07, 09:53 PM anyone know what HD-DVR hardware TW will likely show up with if I sign up for new service in Torrance (90502)? also can someone confirm if TW in the Torrance area provides FSN-HD, ESPN2-HD and the CW in HD?
ESPN1-HD & ESPN2-HD are there..
CW is SDTV only atm..
Haven't seen FSN-HD yet

That would be dope, i sent letters to ESPN last year about carrying HD games, since MLBEI carries several HD games a week (or they did last year, i don't have it this year, have the mlb.com package and i figured out how to play the 700k video streams through my XBMC to my tv)

Finally had to turn in my Moxi. I think TWC is disabling the Moxi's to force a switch to the 6416. Has anyone figured out if you can program a 15-minute skip, either ahead or rewind? I haven't been able to find in any forum. Have the 30-second skip, need the 15-minute. thanks.

Recording this way is fine, it ends up doing only one new show despite several airings during the week. The only problem I notice is that the show isn't named other than something like "Recording on Sunday 7/13 at 9 pm" or similar. I know which it is but would like it named as all others... wiht it's title.

twelvepbrs 07-19-07, 09:49 PM simple/silly question, do all these other boxes that TW is deploying do PIP? I know my SA8300HDDVR was actually pretty good about it (especially since you could scale and reposition the PIP), the only thing it was missing was the ability to do split-screen. How bout all the other boxes TW is handing out? jgmiller 07-20-07, 11:13 AM I'm in Anaheim and have two Moxi boxes, last night I was going to watch something on Showtime OnDemand and when I chose it I got an error message. So I tried some other free OnDemand choices and the same thing happened. I reset the box but still got the same result, then I tried my other Moxi and the same thing happened. I haven't tried any of the pay OnDemand choices yet but it did work last week.
Long story short I haven't called them yet but I have the feeling that this has to do with them replacing Moxi. Anyone else have something like this happen? I've been debating if I should voluntarily switch but I think my decision might be made for me.

markt170 07-20-07, 03:22 PM Moxi meet report (which I provide entirely devoid of techno language)
Thank you to Jody and Aden for hosting a fun and informative event last night. The purpose was to show us a new Moxi box which will soon be available for purchase directly by consumers and which will be compatible with our cable service.
1. The new Moxi will have a user interface (guide) much like the current one, but with several additional and enhanced features, some of which are already available on current cable company supplied Moxis with the latest software upgrades which we don't have in SoCal. It will be faster; it will have a dvd player (not a recorder, and not a HD-DVD or Blue Ray); it will have storage capacity greater than any other dvr on the market; it will store pictures and MP-3 music, and it will allow easy plug-in of an external hard drive to store even more programs (unsure whether the external hard drive will lose all its content when unplugged or if Moxi explodes). Most importantly (for me), it will not have the ads on the guide that TW puts on their dvr.
2. You buy the Moxi (price not yet set), take it home, call your cable company, have them take away your existing dvr, have them install a "cable card" into the new Moxi, and have them call in some sort of data to get some sort of ping to activate it. The Moxi will also need to plug into the internet either through a cable or dsl line or wirelessly. If wireless, you'll need to get some sort of $25 device to connect to the back of the Moxi.
3. You still pay the cable company for premium channels, and you rent their cable card which ranges from $3-5 per month, but you would no longer be paying the cable company for renting their dvr. In the long run, if the Moxi lasts, you might save money, but the main purpose of this product is to provide a premium device with premium service rather than to save a few bucks. Price, warranty terms and monthly fee have not yet been determined. If you have a problem, I'm not sure whether you call Moxi or cable company.
4. The main unit will not run as hot, and will be quieter. The remote will be more responsive, and it will allow a variety of skipping features which cable companies seem to be running away from.
5. You can also buy a Moxi mate which will have all of the same programming access and functionality of the main unit and will also be in high definition. You can also access the dvd from the main unit. The mate will be entirely silent. For now, each main unit will work only one mate, so if you have four tv's you'll need two mains and two mates.
6. Moxi will also come out with another box that contains an amplifier, making set up of a system even easier. Not sure if this box will work a mate.
7. One key advantage of owning the Moxi boxes and subscribing directly through Moxi is that software upgrades won't be dependent on the cable company.
8. There may be inability or some limitation on access to cable company supplied video on demand services. I rarely use this service anyway because VOD is not in HD. I find it easier to record the HD version than rely on VOD. Someone mentioned that HD-VOD is coming soon from TW. We'll see about that.
Those are the highlights from my perspective. I attended last year's session also, and I really must say how much I admire a company that is so dedicated to being in touch with its consumers. My two Moxi's are going strong, and I'm not inclined to trade them for the non-moxi dvrs from TW. I am hoping that TW in So Cal will upgrade the software automatically, but that seems very unlikely. Whether they do that or not, I will very likely make this purchase shortly have they become available sometime this fall.

I happen to be a long time Motorola 6412-II user and have grown comfortable with its interface (and limitations and quirks) after almost 3 years of using it. But I would certainly consider going to a "premium" device (bought, or rented from TWC) with a much larger (and expandable) hard drive capacity as long as the user interface still provided what I minimally require and was intuitive and not clumsy. I certainly couldn't adjust to a Moxi that I tried to use at a friend's house a few years back, but maybe it's just a matter of what you get used to.
Anyway, big question for me (and possibly others): does this new box have firewire for recording to D-VHS? If not, that's a deal breaker for me.

OK, I tested and also get an error. The very first time I got an error code 0x8. Every time after that I got an error code 0x1. I'm gonna be really annoyed if this is their way of telling us that they are taking away our Moxis!!

I am in Canoga Park/Chatsworth and get ABC, NBC, CBS, KCET, KCAL, KTTV, and until recently TNT in HD. Someone earlier in this too long thread mentioned that they stopped receiving TNTHD also. TNTHD's signal was always spotty with the occasional dropout but the other channels are rock solid.
Any news on the new DCH-6416? I plan on changing out all my DCT6416s tomorrow. Seems promising. I think that's the model, it matches the picture on the Moto site that I saw at the Santa Monica office.

The guy said I could bring in my old ones and pick up the new ones. I just went in to see if they had new printed channel guides! :D
Is anyone here using the TW HD cable card on HDTV? Is it working ok?
I got one for my mother's new TV and it works okay. When we initially got it, none of the HD plus channels worked but after a few trips to their office in Santa Monica, it got sorted out. MHD still doesn't come on but that may have something to do with the weak cable signal to her house.
Bottom line: Be prepared to deal with some headaches dealing with TW customer service. If you manage to persevere through it, it will work in the end.

I am and it's working fine on all channels. It dates back to Adelphia. Got it in late 2004.

I haven't been able to get TNTHD in at least a couple of months. The signal is craptastic. I would call but I'm about to move to OC and my CATV service is "free basic" through my apartment complex; the only thing I miss is L&O in HD (sort of).
Just picked up 3 DCH3416s and am hooking them up. I'll report bACK ON MY FINDINGS. i'M ENCOURAGED, AS THE csr SAID ALL THE CONNECTING PORTS ARE OPEN ON THIS ONE! i HOPE SO! Forgive the caps! Sorry.
Update 1: All boxes are up and running. I did have to call they 800# and I chose "2" to reauthorize. I waited 20 minutes before I called, then in less than 5 minutes all 3 were going. Now the menus have to D/L, wonder if that will be any faster?? I'll test the ports later after they stabilize. The menu is still the TV Guide system. :( Was hoping they would have used an HD guide in the new box. Very clean external look, only a USB port on the front. The boxes are silver not that pewter color.

He said I could just bring in my current DCT-6412-II and they'd give me a new DCH-6416 over the counter. I'll be going over to the Green Valley Circle office.
I looked at the user guide and it showed both eSata and 1394 ports. I am going to assume that the 1394 ports are 100% working (just as they are on the current DCT641x models). However I'm guessing the eSata ports are still not functional yet for hard drive expansion.
Still no addition of "native" to the HDMI/YPbPr output, unfortunately. So 720p is still upconverted to 1080i by the box. This is the only theoretical downside to Motorola boxes if I actually wanted native 720p as well as native 1080i. NBD.
Nevertheless, I think it's finally time for an upgrade (and larger internal hard drive). Just need to dump my current contents to D-VHS temporarily first, and then I'll be over there.
Well on quick analysis the USB and 1394 ports don't do anything :( when a device is connected to them (HDD or thumb drive with data). I've never successfully connected the DCT6416 via 1394 to my Media Center PC so that's next.

As far as 1394, I believe the only 5C-compliant "trusted devices" are D-VHS VCR's. This interface has been active and fully functional on all the Motorola 62xx/64xx boxes for at least four years. All recorded/live content, both protected and unprotected, can be offloaded to D-VHS any number of times from DVR to D-VHS. The D-VHS copy of unprotected content can then, itself, be copied to another D-VHS machine etc. for any number of generations. Protected content on D-VHS can never be copied to a second D-VHS generation, as one copy (first generation from DVR to D-VHS) is the limit. I'd be very surprised if the 1394 ports no longer worked on the DCH-6416.
As best I know, no PC 1394 interface is considered 5C-compliant. So while it is apparently possible to offload unprotected content from a Moto box to a PC (under WinXP anyway), this will not work for protected/premium content. In order to offload premium content (e.g. HBO-HD) from DVR you must use D-VHS.
P.S. - in a second phone call to TWC later today, I spoke to a second CSR who flatly denied that the DCH-6416 is available yet. He believes only DCT-6416 and DCT-3416 boxes are being given out. I've decided to drive over to the office and check for myself what is actually available should I bring my 6412-II in for trade.
DCH boxes have been available for about 2 weeks, if you ask for a box with separate security (M cards aka DCH boxes), you must be given one as July 1. if you are having any problems getting one, let me know, maybe I can give you a hand there. Ah, one more thing, we do not have inventory of standard definition boxes (non high definition), so do not ask. One last thing the esata ports on all motorola boxes come disabled as default setting(their policy)
I'm not surprised that the USB port is inactive.

If you're concerned. Just go to the Santa Monica office on Nebraska. They have a bunch. I don't think you need to go to the "closest" office. It's not that much further for you in the Marina.
Billiam86 07-25-07, 04:22 AM I live in Fullerton and don't get KTLA (CW) in HD
Anybody know if they're planning to bring the CW to HD anytime soon? I'd love to watch Smallville in HD
Sorry if I missed it, but what are the advantages of the new DCH model over the DCT?
Sorry if I missed it, but what are the advantages of the new DCH model over the DCT?
Right now it looks like it might be slightly prettier, but that's subjective. :(
As long as you have a 160GB you may want to stay put for a real upgrade later...
slickshoes 07-25-07, 01:05 PM Any idea when the Navigator software is coming to Torrance... I just tried swapping my SA 8300 for a new MOTO box and the lady said that the new MOTO box won't work with the old passport guide...was she BSing me or is this correct?? Thanks guys.
twelvepbrs 07-25-07, 05:11 PM None of the boxes do PIP, AFAIK.

Anyone else know of any boxes being deployed by TW that do PIP other than the SA8300 HD DVR?
Adelmoxi 07-25-07, 11:17 PM Is TWC stocking up the M-Card CableCard's as of July 1st or are they just stocking on the DCH-6416?
Well on quick analysis the USB and 1394 ports don't do anything :( when a device is connected to them (HDD or thumb drive with data). I've never successfully connected the DCT6416 via 1394 to my Media Center PC so that's next.
I think the USB port there is specifically for a keyboard or some other input device, not for any storage drive. I've read that's what it is for, but I've never seen one in use, though. The 1394s have always been labeled as future use. When that future will be, though, is anyone's guess.

jgmiller 07-26-07, 04:28 PM Just an update on the error message using OnDemand with the Moxi boxes. I had TWC out today and he said that yes it has become an issue with the Moxi boxes and their network.
Basically his story went as follows; the Moxi boxes have cable modems in them that talk over the network a lot and need bandwidth. Since I have two Moxi boxes and TWC broadband the bandwidth is pretty close to maxed out between all three devices and their network errors on the side of giving the bandwidth to the standalone cable modem. Apparently the resulting loss of bandwidth can cause issues with OnDemand retrieving the information it needs to in order to work. His fix was to reauthorize the Moxi boxes and cold boot them, one worked right away the other needed a couple of tries to come back.
He also said that if they have a defective DVR in the field they are replacing them with another Moxi (at least in Anaheim) and not one of the new boxes. He did say that the Fullerton office had the new boxes and I could take one or both Moxi's in and swap for the new one. Supposedly the new boxes don't have active cable modems or at least don't have the bandwidth problem and place nice with their network.
markt170 07-26-07, 05:04 PM I have two Moxi boxes in Encino, and the On-Demand feature works fine, although I rarely use it.
Adelmoxi 07-26-07, 05:57 PM here something interesting:
I called TWC for a problem I have with 6416. towards the end of the call she reminded me that I can view my bill on channel 1282 and pay it on 1283.
Is this a sign of something to come? what do you guys think?

I think that's not for former Adelphia folk just yet.

Yes and mine worked fine for over a year, he said it's something they've been encountering lately. Frankly while his explanation was a little convoluted it does make some sense. When TWC converted everything to RoadRunner they boosted the speeds somewhat which of course took up more bandwidth plus they've added (at least in Anaheim) two HD channels which take up more so if the Moxi boxes are somewhat of a bandwidth hog they might be running into issues.
slickshoes 07-27-07, 01:43 PM Hey guys, do the new Moto DCH 6416 boxes work with my Passport software, or do they only work with the TV Guide and Navigator software? I went to the office and the lady said the new MOTO's aren't compatible with Passport. I find that hard to believe...and does anyone know when the new Navigator is coming to the south bay?? Thanks!!
Also, is the 8300HD the newest box for my area??

Mine is running TV Guide. I'm former Adelphia.
AnthemAVM 07-28-07, 03:09 PM I am in Huntington Beach, and went into the local store to see what boxes they had for HD DVR units, it is still the SA Explorer boxes, I was surprised after two years with that box in my house they are still using that.

Also, is the 8300HD the newest box for my area??She's right - you're stuck with the SA8300HD since you're in Passport territory but be glad that you are - everybody i know with a Motorola DVR is not very happy with it. My Mom had one and as well as a few friends and i didn't like it a bit. My Passport 8300HDs are WAY better. I'm on the same TWC division as you are and i don't think they even offer a Motorola DVR do they?
As to Navigator - TWC originally planned on deploying it last spring, but held off due to too many problems reported from other divisions and in their own testing according to a technician supervisor i spoke with. Now they're not giving out any information other than "soon" but i imagine the longer they hold out, the more problems they'll be solving before ramming it down our throats.
slickshoes 07-28-07, 04:18 PM Thank you very much Randy...that cleared up a lot! The SA isn't bad, I was just hoping something was out that would be a little quicker and actually had HDMI that worked right...cuz' I'm out of components on my SXRD....
AnthemAVM 07-28-07, 04:20 PM I exchanged my box, and when it comes to HDMI it works much better for me. Lets hope it stays that way.
DSperber 07-28-07, 09:47 PM DCH boxes have been available for about 2 weeks, if you ask for a box with separate security (M cards aka DCH boxes), you must be given one as July 1. Ok, made the switch today.
Turns out that they would not do the equipment trade at the Santa Monica office, where I went first. I had to go to the Green Valley Circle office where "they had my equipment". Anyway, I had no trouble swapping my DCT-6412.
However...
(1) The desk rep at Green Valley wasn't trained properly, and didn't know what I was asking for when I requested a new DCH-6416. The desk rep next to her participated in the transfer by "guiding" my service rep into doing what was needed. She then went to the right cabinet behind them and fetched a new DVR.
(2) The new hardware is not a DCH-6416. It is a DCH-3416. When asked about this I was told "we treat it in our system as if you have a DCH-6416, but we're giving out DCH-3416 boxes". Makes no difference to me, as they're effectively identical.
(3) The M-card is essentially pre-installed in the back slot, with a metal guard screwed down over it. Again, makes no difference to me.
(4) When I got back home I discovered my two TWC phone lines were out, and the lights on my Arris modem were indicating "outage". I thought this was very coincidental that there would have suddenly been an outage in my area in the hour or so that I was out, and called tech support (who confirmed no outage in my area). We stepped through the usual modem reset/re-boot with no success, and he said "the earliest we can have someone out is Monday". I screamed and asked to speak to a supervisor for an "emergency visit" today.
When the supervisor got on the phone I told him that it was interesting that I'd just swapped DVR's and now I have an "outage". He looked at my account and immediately saw what had happened: the un-trained desk operator at Green Valley had simply deleted my old DVR and added my new DVR to my account, ending up with the DCH-3416 "at the top" of the equipment list. Apparently, this is wrong, as the proper assignment of IP address (for my Arris modem) requires that it be FIRST, at the top of the equipment list. I don't know if it would have made a difference if I had already connected my new DCH-3416 (I had not yet, having just walked in the door when I noticed my two phone lines were out) but he said not. He said the Arris modem needed to be the first equipment item shown on my account.
So he rearranged things, putting the new DCH-3416 under the modem, and presto/zingo... lights came back on the modem and my phone lines came back to life (along with my Internet access). Case closed.
I thanked him profusely and complained that it was amazing to me that the desk reps were so ill-trained in this new equipment's availability and installation requirements (given the high-profile July 1 FCC event and the rollout of these new boxes by TWC only in the past few weeks). Remarkable that they had seemingly been given no training or proper preparation (e.g. on the importance of not disturbing my modem being first in my equipment list, if I also had TWC telephone service as I did) on how to replace equipment on a customer account when an Arris modem is present.
Anyway, I now have a functional DCH-3416. I did have to call tech support to get the box activated (and had to hold my tongue when asked by the rep to "be sure I had my TV on channel 3").
Now I just have to wait 4-5 days until the 2-week Guide data fills up (this should really be embarrassing to TWC, that it still is the way things work... instead of being ready to go within 15 minutes as should be the case) and I'll be back in business.

Why dosen't TWC make the switch to Passport and Passport ECHO for DCT? I heard it is faster than iGuide

West LA, you're probably in former Adelphia so you'd get the Motorola boxes. You may want to check pricing on the HD receiver as the HD DVR is less than $3 more.

I'm actually in former comcast area....would that make any difference? I remember the old Motorola boxes they gave for sd cable were slow and buggy a few years back. HD DVR box is $5 more...not sure if its worth it with VOD available.

are you sure it's just $5 more? I've been in a couple of TWC areas where they charge $5 for the box (they charge the $5 for any of the boxes) but then they also charge $10 for "DVR Service"

Yeah you live around my friends house where they do that 10 more for dvr and any box is 5 bucks. In my area they charge 13.95 for a HD DVR box including DVR service, and 8.95 for a regular HD box and 5.50 for just a regular box plus 2.50 on the 2nd box for programming.
Not sure why they charge different rates for equipment in different areas!

unless you're special there's no HD VOD. It mostly sux anyway. A DVR is PRICELESS.
I believe you'll be getting a Scientific Atlanta box, but others can confirm.

Thanks for that insight! VOD is great with premiums...w/o HD VOD I agree it does kind of suck watching on an HDTV.
I read they will start coming out with HD VOD or more HD channels once they role out switched digital cable (SDV) which they plan on doing by the end of the year. Comcast has HD VOD in select markets.

MrJamela 08-01-07, 02:26 PM So I just signed up for the "All the Best" package from Time Warner.....
Not surprisingly, that's a claim they really can't back.
The internet is blazing fast although the old modem they gave me seems to be having problems.
Instead of their newest HD DVR receivers, they brought me a couple of old beat-up Moxi boxes.
And the phone? They didn't bother to install that at all. I have to wait another two weeks before I have a phone.
I'm going to miss my DirecTV.
The big issue I'm trying to decide about is the Moxi boxes. I like the interface, but I want to hook my box up to my new plasma with HDMI and it only has a DVI input on the back?
What cable/adapter do I need to get this to work right? And is it worth the effort? I have heard there are issues with the DVI output on these things.
Should I just drag it in and switch it for the new Motorola box?

First, check the modem they gave you, most of them have phone jacks on the back of them, so if you have a portable phone you should be able to set it up right next to the modem and plug it in without having to wait for them to "install" it. As for DVI->HDMI such a cable exists and you can pick one up at Fry's or through Monoprice, Newegg, etc...i've never actually had the moxi or motorola so i can't give you any specific thoughts on how well the DVI output works, but i've had HDMI->DVI working for my SA8300HDDVR to a large LCD computer monitor before, and HDMI->HDMI for the 8300 to my TV (works fine except for the occasional "Your TV does not support HDCP" message)

Head here to get all your answers: Moxi ( Motorola BMC90xx ) Q&A and Discussion Thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=412846)
A couple of quick responses. There's simple adapters to convert to/from HDMI/DVI. You have to decide how to hook up the audio, since DVI doesn't do audio. HOWEVER, most people with the Moxi recommend not bothering with the DVI output because it looks about the same, and doesn't work as well as you might expect.
Go over to that discussion thread to get full, detailed answers. Be prepared to be overwhelmed (but probably not in a good way).

That's "All The Best" TWC can muster so you know what to do. Remember there is no contract!
They really are pathetic in so many ways it's hard to count. They contradict their own commercials. ie They harp on cancellation fees, but when I called to drop HBO they were going to slam a fee on me to cancel it. I was not polite on that one, but did not curse! They say the first tier is included for free but I see a $5 fee on my only tier. I'm in a group rate in my condo and that's not the same to them. So I said, you mean since I'm paying less I get less, right? They argued that I'm paying less but am the same. No I'm not there's this $5 fee I shouldn't be paying! That went on in circles for too long! FiOS is coming!!! :D :D :D
I can't wait!
Bring on the contract! I'll sign it just to ditch TWC!
MrJamela 08-01-07, 03:46 PM I'm a reluctant TWC subscriber at best. I just moved away from my DirecTV to a condo that doesn't allow dishes.
And I'm not in a Verizon area so no FIOS for me either.
The modem they gave me is one of their old ones without the phone hookups.
The Moxi interface seems pretty decent (if slow). How much worse is the new Motorola interface?
I'm not worried about audio since I can go through my digital optical port in my receiver, but I would like to get the best picture possible to my new Panny Plasma. Which of these boxes can be made to look the best?

A condo can't legally keep you from putting up a dish, depending on where and how you attach it to the structure, so unless you're entire unit faces to the north you might want to look into D* again (if you want it back)
MrJamela 08-01-07, 04:19 PM Yeah, I know the laws are in my favor, but I don't want to rock the boat yet (and the TWC deal is pretty good if the quality ends up being satisfactory).

I was just about to post the same thing. The SHVA (http://www.fcc.gov/mb/policy/shvera.html) (Satellite Home Viewer Act) makes it illegal for them to stop you from putting up an antenna or dish on property that is for your exclusive use (non common area).

I you can I would suggest you just get a DVI to HDMI cable and not add another cable or converter to the mix. Extra connections just mean extra chances of signal loss and failure. If you need to leave the existing cable or just want to then get a FEMALE HDMI to MALE DVI adapter and plug it into the back of the Moxi.

Me three. I'm VP in our condo and we just ask that the owner use a competent installer and they are responsible if any damage happens. That's it. Go do it! I've had Moxi and now the Moto DCH 3416. Even with the kinda crappy TV Guide interface and other issues, I'll take the Moto over the Moxi. HDMI out too! Get the new Moto, your district should have them! It's after July 1.
MrJamela 08-02-07, 12:43 PM Yeah, I figured out the converter thing, but I think I'm going to call them to switch the boxes.

Just how buggy are these things?

See if you can get the DCH3416
The DCT 3416 is also good as is the DCT 6416. They all essentially run the same and are HDMI.

They can be buggy but I think one of the biggest problems now is that any Moxi boxes TWC is giving out are used ones they've taken back from customers. So basically you've got a 2 year old PC that has been running its hard drive and heating up 24/7 for that long and they are starting to fail.
I used to live in Cox territory and had a DCT6412 with the Passport interface and loved it, then when I moved last year and got the Moxi I wasn't too sure about it but I quickly warmed up to it. The only real drawbacks I've found with it are it's sometimes slow nature, its heat and the small hard drive. I'm very close to changing one of the two I have out for the new Moto box but I find myself really hating to go to IGuide.

I'm very close to changing one of the two I have out for the new Moto box but I find myself really hating to go to IGuide.
The two boxes they gave me were clearly old and beat up. And I was shocked at the heat.
Are there any TIVO boxes that accept the cablecard that I can use instead? I like my TIVO....

Yes, the Series 3 and the new Series 3 "junior".

Time Warner Cable’s Mixed 2Q: Revenue, Cash Flow Up; Basic Subscribers Down
COO Hobbs: Bulk of Losses in Ex-Adelphia Systems; Cable Operator to Offer Low-Cost Triple-Play Tiers
By Mike Farrell -- Multichannel News, 8/1/2007 1:27:00 PM
Time Warner Cable reported mixed second-quarter results Wednesday, with revenue and cash flow growth at about 9% -- in line with analysts’ estimates -- but basic-subscriber losses greater than most analysts’ expectations.
The MSO lost 57,000 basic-video customers during the period, mostly in the former Adelphia Communications systems it acquired last July. Many analysts had predicted second-quarter basic losses of 9,000-11,000 customers.
Chief operating officer Landel Hobbs vowed to win many of those customers back, adding that the second-largest cable operator in the country would focus on offering a variety of low-cost tiers of voice, video and high-speed-data service to address price-conscious consumers.
Time Warner Cable said on a conference call with analysts that the bulk of the basic-subscriber losses -- about 80% -- were in the former Adelphia systems, particularly in Los Angeles and Dallas.
On the call, Hobbs said the operator is implementing four different tiers of high-speed-data service in all of its divisions -- a “lite” tier at 768 kilobits per second, a basic tier at 1.5 megabits per second, a standard tier at 7 mbps-10 mbps and a turbo tier at 10 mbps and above.
On the voice side, Hobbs said Time Warner Cable introduced in about two-thirds of its divisions an unlimited in-state phone service, targeting the estimated 30% of consumers who spend $25-$44 per month on landline telephony, as well as a second-line service.
The cable operator also created a local-only tier, which addresses the 15% of phone users who never make long-distance calls and generally spend $15-$25 per month on phone service. That tier already launched in four divisions in the past 30 days, Hobbs said.
Time Warner Cable also plans to launch an international calling plan in the third quarter.
“We’re never happy with losing basic subscribers,” Hobbs said on the conference call. “We know that satellite will typically zero in on these low-value customers, but I want to keep these customers, so I’m going to use the bundling concept. By mixing and matching parts of the bundle, we’ll develop a bundle that is attractive to these low-end customers -- even these basic-only video customers -- to retain them and upsell them into higher-priced packages. That’s how we will attack the basic-video issues you saw this quarter.”
But investors didn’t seem to buy it, driving down Time Warner Cable stock by nearly 5% ($1.87 per share) to $36.35 in early trading Wednesday.
Revenue for the period was up 9% to $4 billion, marking the first quarter in which the company has hit the $4 billion milestone. Operating income before depreciation and amortization (OIBDA, a measure of cash flow) was up 9% to $1.4 billion.
Time Warner Cable also added about 184,000 digital subscribers, 188,000 high-speed-data customers and 241,000 voice customers during the period.
Chief financial officer John Martin also revealed that the cable operator is part of the bidding for Insight Communications, which has about 650,000 customers in the Midwest, many near existing Time Warner Cable systems.
“We’re participating in the process and we’re emphasizing our usual disciplined approach to evaluating strategic opportunities of this sort,” Martin said. “Beyond that, it would be inappropriate to make any further comment.”
Also on the call, the MSO revealed that Sprint Nextel decided to exit the SpectrumCo partnership, the consortium of cable operators that participated in the federal advanced-wireless-spectrum auctions last year. Sprint owned a 5% interest in the partnership and had the right to exit after giving the other partners 60 days’ notice.
Time Warner Cable said in its 10-Q quarterly report that its contribution to the Sprint buyout will be about $30 million. Sprint is still participating in the separate cable/wireless consortium, dubbed Pivot.
On the conference call, CEO Glenn Britt said Sprint’s departure from SpectrumCo will have little impact.
“They decided they had a better use for that capital,” he added. “It’s a relatively small amount of money, but not a big deal or of big significance one way or the other.”
Britt declined to give any detail about the consortium’s plans for the AWS spectrum, but he added that one reason for any delays is that the new owners of the frequencies have to wait for exit users to roll off before they can use it.
“There are other users on it,” Britt said. “There’s a whole process called clearing that is well-known in the wireless industry. That is going on, and it takes a while to get the existing users off. It’s not like we’re just sitting here.”

Personally I've read just as many horror stories about DirectTV so I'm not a huge fan of theirs. As for the cable vs. DSL I don't think there is any comparison. Every DSL line my company has had from AT&T/SBC has had major problems and we have locations all over Southern California. Every cable internet connection however has been amazing in both speed and stability. For phone service unless there is a major monetary incentive I think AT&T is just fine, it's really hard to screw up old fashioned phone service.
DSperber 08-03-07, 09:18 PM They offer an unlimited national plan as well -- I signed up for it.
Although I don't actually have a phone yet so.....I've now been on TWC for all three (cable TV, internet, and 2-lines phone) for about 6 weeks, phone being the latest addition activated as of June 19. My primary phone line is full-featured, including unlimited long distance for US and Canada. My secondary phone line only has California-unlimited long distance (although it's really just for incoming fax, and possible secondary local calling when needed).
I've had several non-trivial outages during that time, but not caused by anything specifically phone-related. However it MUST be pointed out that if you have an outage when you're committed to TWC (or any one provider and "delivery pipe", for that matter) you will very likely lose all three of your services. Even if cable TV is unaffected by the outage, phone and internet (driven by the same Arris modem) are definitely both going to be out.
In the old days when I had Verizon telephone for both my lines, if there was an internet/TV outage I could use my dial-up backup ISP service (and external modem, connected to my secondary analog phone line) and thus could still do essential internet work/activity until Comcast/TWC fixed the cable problem. I might also have lost cable TV, but certainly did not lose phone.
Obviously my current total dependence on TWC cable, with 100% total exposure if the cable goes out... losing internet and phone for sure, with zero dial-up backup capability (unless I pay for an additional basic Verizon phone line, which makes little sense) presents a new risk that you should consider before making any service change decision. Just be sure you think about that.
I'm actually totally happy with TWC phone service, including pricing and savings (and other promotional discounts). But I've been VERY angry during the several days when we had many hours of total outage in my area, taking down all three of my services for the duration. Thankfully, I have a cell phone too.
MrJamela 08-04-07, 09:47 PM Wow. Went to my local TWC office in Van Nuys to switch out the Moxi box for a more current one.
Not a pretty scene.
There were two open windows and a line wrapped around a tiny room and practically out the door.
I immediately turned and bailed.
I'll either try again this week in the morning before work or just ask them to bring new boxes with them when they install my phone service.
markt170 08-06-07, 02:29 AM What is the latest information on on-demand movies in high definition -- in Encino, which is former adelphia-land? Someone told me they get HD movies on-demand, but I don't see that offered. Is there a particular channel?
I returned all my equipment to the Nebraska office and effectively ended my relationship with TWC today. I had been an Adelphia/TWC subscriber for over ten years.
The employee that helped me did not ask why or try to offer an incentive to stay. It was fairly typical of the apathy that cable has shown me over the years. I was not altogether dissatisfied with them. My main gripes were the length of time it took them to increase the HD lineup in my area and the poor software that runs the DCT 6416. But the thing that really motivated me was that I developed some special programming needs that cable was not going to fill any time soon.
Anyway, this is a goodbye of sorts as I have been following this thread for a number of years. If anyone is curious, I am going with E* for my entertainment needs from now on.
MoxiGuy 08-06-07, 03:45 PM With all due respect to MoxiGuy,,,VERY! Your respect is duly noted and mine is offered to you in return.
DougDingle 08-06-07, 04:46 PM Any rumors of TW adding new HD channels to combat DTV's "150 channels of HD coming soon" FUD campaign?
If DTV's 150 new HD channels are of the same quality as their current HD offering, it will be hilarious. TW's HD is wildly better. I was a DTV subscriber for almost 10 years before finally dropping them about a month ago, and the quality of their signal got a little worse every year for all the time I subscribed. Just painful compression artifacting.
I've been with TW since January, and with the acquisition of a pair of HD TiVos about a month ago, am finally quite happy with TW's signal. The four cablecards in the two boxes were a bit difficult to get going initially, but since then it's been smooth sailing. And I have to say, the quality of the MPEG decoders in the TiVos is very, very good. I see very little pixelation as a rule, and I'm watching on a 70" set. Before the TiVos, I had a single cablecard plugged directly into my set, and the set's MPEG decoder was not nearly as good.
I also must say a few words about TW's customer service. I have had nothing but good luck with them. The people get on the phone in 5 minutes or less. They are unfailingly polite and helpful. The techs show up on time, or even a bit early. I requested they bring extra cablecards for the twin TiVo install because of problems I'd read about, and the guy showed up with seven cards for the four required, which was a good thing because two of them didn't work. All in all, a very pleasant surprise. I'm in the Eagle Rock subdivision, formerly serviced by the Robber Barons at Adelphia.
...... FiOS is coming!!! :D :D :D
I can't wait!
Bring on the contract! I'll sign it just to ditch TWC!
Is this to all of West LA or just around the Federal Ave in your neck of the woods? How did you find out that it was going to be available soon? Any links or more info?
Just curious.
Another thing I'm curious about is how the PQ and the channel availability is going to be with FiOS. There is no thread for it, at least in the LA area so hard to know how the service is going to be. Imagine if it makes you long for the good old TWC days.

DSperber 08-06-07, 06:01 PM Is this to all of West LA or just around the Federal Ave in your neck of the woods? How did you find out that it was going to be available soon? Any links or more info? Just curious.Just remember... this is VERIZON!
I was curious to know if FIOS was available yet here in the Marina, so i went to "web promotion" (http://www.fiberpromotion.com/) page. It was designed to appear that you can enter your home phone number, but in reality you can't... at least not on that page. But if you click anywhere in the general area of where you think you can enter your phone number, you are then sent to either THIS "internet special" page (http://www22.verizon.com/content/ConsumerFios?promotion_code=JUNCT/W04&AID=10416647&PID=1792082) or THIS OTHER page (http://www22.verizon.com/content/ConsumerFios?promotion_code=JUNCT/W04&AID=10416647&PID=1792082), both of which are similar but different (you may actually get the same page from both links, based on random chance).
Then, if you fill in your phone number (or, in my case, street address since I currently no longer have a Verizon phone number, having converted over to TWC phone back in June) on this secondary page for "non-Verizon customers" you will trigger a search, to see if service is available in your area or at your particular street/unit address. You might expect a simple "yes" or "no" answer with supporting explanation.
Well, NO. Instead, I got a "system unavailable" (https://www22.verizon.com/FiOSForHome/channels/FiOS/ErrPageHSI.aspx?Err=ED140&Desc=Street%20not%20found) response, suggesting "server down" or something. The URL implies "street address unknown" but I had just come through a dialog where I actually CHECKED my exact street/unit address off of a list of every unit in my building!
Nevertheless... "system is currently unavailable, we're sorry online ordering is currently unavailable. We are unable to check FiOS availability and process orders due to a system issue. Please try again later. If this problem continues, please call 888-933-3331 to speak with a Verizon Online representative. We apologize for the inconvenience."
Again... remember, this is VERIZON. They can't seem to send back a properly built web response that says "service is not yet available in your area", and you want to trust them with Internet, TV, and phone? They want to extort you into paying around $7/month for "inside line insurance" as an alternative to terrorizing you about what they will otherwise charge you if they ever ever have to come out to work on some problem that might be in your home. They have a "basic" telephone cost of $17/month, and a $37/month actual bill... not counting long distance.
Personally, I'm happy at the moment, having switched to TWC for all three services. I was never happy with Verizon as a phone company (who bought out GTE in my area, as part of "globalization" and the "new way forward"). I'm currently happy with the TWC pricing, the 6MB/s internet speed which comes with that, and HD picture quality. I'm quite satisfied with the Motorola DVR boxes (originally a 6412-II, and now a DCH-3416) for my own needs, which include reliable offloading content to D-VHS if I want (and which is now a "deal-breaker" for any alternative service that doesn't offer it). And I'm perfectly satisfied with not having to have separately priced long distance service (from Sprint, in my case) for both of my lines. All in all, I like the TWC package.
I'm sure FIOS has some advantages (e.g. different HD channel offerings), but I personally would not enjoy going back to deal with "the phone company", now that I can finally have an option to NOT.
YMMV.
twelvepbrs 08-06-07, 07:06 PM Well,
I think I'll be ditching TW's cable service for a while, D*'s NFLST promo is too good to pass-up, plus my fiends have elected me as the chump who gets D* so we can take it with us tailgating this fall, I'm going to keep my HSI with TW, so i'll see if they put a trap on my line to block all the TV services, hopefully I'll still be able to get the locals unencrypted through my cable, that way I can rock the HD-PIP all season long

:) I feel you DSperber. I'm actually not one of the unhappy ones as far as TWC goes. That's why I was just curious. :)
I've been to the pages you linked to, many many times over the past year and a half and I also called Verizon FiOS department. But each and every time I got the same answer. No it is not available and no we don't know when it will be. One of the ladies explained to me, when I called, that they have to get permission from each city individually before they can lay the fiber down and offer the service. She also told me to look for Verizon marked vans and work crews digging up the pavement around where I live. :)
This is why Joe's post surprised me, although we are in different parts of West LA, but still same city.
Incidentally my phone company, Sunrocket, just went belly up. So I'm in the process of deciding to whom I'll be overpaying for the privilege of having a phone line.
Thanks for the comments and links.

joekewl 08-07-07, 03:21 AM Well, TWC here in Anaheim has been out 3 times to install & try and get my cable to work correctly via a CableCard directly plugged into my TV (Brand New Mitsu 65732).
9 CableCard's later I still do not get HDNet(420) at all, and the audio on KCETHD (412) drops out quite a bit. TWC blamed my TV software version, which I laughed at, but got a single version newer from Mitsu anyways. After installing the new software on the TV today, I still have the exact same problems, not that I expected anything to actually work.
The last Jr tech they had out here said they only have Moxi HD DVR's now, does this sound correct for my area (former Adelphia zone in Anaheim) ?
It also seems like these CableCard's they are giving me seem to be the 1.0 CC's, and not the newer 2.0 or M-Card, does this also sound right for my area?

Yes we do. :) Anyway I tried to do some research on FiOS and went to read the topics for cities that have FiOS on this very forum. Turns out DSL Reports has coverage maps for FiOS future and current availability. Interesting how they have more info on this than Verizon. Anyway here is the Link (http://www.dslreports.com/gmaps/fios?typ=s)
Joe as for us in West LA there is only one marker placed. It is on the corner of 20th street and Arizona (between Wilshire and Santa Monica). The person placed that marker on April 4th and here is the quote from the marker:
FiOS in orange paint on asphalt at this corner before street resurfacing.
And that's pretty much it.
Rudy
P.S. For anyone planning on looking up their area, do note that when you see the entire map of US not all the markers may be visible so you need to zoom into your specific area. Good Luck.

how many LA KINGS games are they going to show in HD on FOXSPORTS in 2007?
Probably the same as last year, one game per month. :( FOXSPORTS announced last year that from January of this year they will double the amount of their HD broadcasting, and then continued showing one Kings game in HD per month. :(

Hard to tell yet about taxes and fees, since my first bill included pro-rata for the month of June, plus July. I've seen HD on demand movies that you can buy at a friends house. However for a mass rollout of hd on demand and hd channels you have to wait until TW rolls out SDV (Switched Digital Video) which it plans to deploy by the end of the year in half it markets. And claims it will have "unlimited hd capacity" once that's done.

It also seems like these CableCard's they are giving me seem to be the 1.0 CC's, and not the newer 2.0 or M-Card, does this also sound right for my area?
Anyone know about any issues like this in Anaheim?
jasonvr 08-10-07, 01:14 AM Anyone know about any issues like this in Anaheim?
The only thing I can speak to is the Moxi box. I have one (had it since before the TWC take over). No problems other than the usual slowness with the 3.2 software and the small hard drive. I can only pray that we eventually get 4.1. Then they can pry my Moxi from my cold, dead hands.
One suggestion (although I don't know if my theories are sound since I dont use a CC): Have them bring you a box with separable security. These boxes essentially have a CC permanently screwed into the back. If they can't get that to work, then they need to fix your line. If they can, then maybe it truly is your TV (although I doubt it).
MrJamela 08-10-07, 02:11 PM I'm not even 2 weeks into this TWC service and it just keeps getting worse and worse.
First they didn't set up my phone and gave me two old beat up Moxi boxes that seem prone to crashing.
Now I get home yesterday and I've got no service at all. No TV, no Internet and 2 weeks later, still no phone.
And the best they can swing me is an all day appointment tomorrow. The guy will be there to install my phone and fix my service between 9am and 7pm. Are you kidding me??
I told them they have the time it takes DirecTV to get my service installed to get me back up and running.....
The phone customer service is actually quite good. Which is why the quality of the actual service is that much more disappointing.
Very unhappy so far.

Ron_Mexico81 08-11-07, 07:36 PM Hi Guys.....I'm new.
I live here in Chatsworth, and have the SA Explorer 8300HD Box. I just bought a new TV, and I'm not able to connect through HDMI.....it says not supported. I have to connect through component and the colors are a bit off. I use HDMI for my PS3 and the colors are awesome.
Does anybody know when HDMI will be supported and when they are coming out with a new HD DVR?
Thanks!

What specific message do you get?
I've had an 8300HD in the chatsworth area, and it worked fine through HDMI (except for the occasional "Your tv does not support HDCP" error message), if this is the message you are getting double check that your TV supports HDCP, maybe try hard resetting the box, or just leaving it unplugged for a while, or try swapping it for another one at the TW customer center
I exchanged my MOXI box last week for a Moto DCH 3416. So far so good, it's faster, no freezing and about 25 more hours of HD. Does anyone know if you can get it to make sounds when using the clicker and if there is a 15 minute jump function? Is there any place to find the cheats?

I've tried unplugging power from all devices and then plugging them back in, but to no avail. The 8300 still complains of "HDCP copy protection" problem and shuts down the HDMI output. In fact, if the HDMI cable is inserted it even shuts down the YbPr component video output (and displays a similar error message on that output). Only by removing the HDMI cable does component video output come back to life so that HD can be fed to the Aquos at least through that path.
So for the moment, that's how she's running. Component video. But that's not how she wants it... she wants her HDMI connection back (can't blame her).
What is this "hard reset" of the 8300 that you speak of? What are the steps to bring that about? Is this different from simply unplugging and resting? What else must be done? This doesn't format the hard drive, does it? That is UNWANTED... since there are many many hours of unwatched recordings that MUST NOT BE LOST.
Is there some particular recipe for having cables in or not in, and which device to plug into AC power first after all are unplugged and "resting" for a few minutes, in order to bring about re-"trust" of the HDMI connection and eliminate the HDCP error message?
Again, this had been working perfectly for 18 months... until yesterday.
HELP anyone? (note: I have a DCH3416, so the 8300 is a foreign animal to me, aside from the user manual and limited hands-on experience with the 8300 that several friends have around the country on other cable systems)
Ron_Mexico81 08-12-07, 04:35 AM I think I was getting "Your tv does not support HDCP" message. I'm not sure. I tried to use HDMI again, and now I just get a blank screen. I've unplugged the cable box for a few minutes, and nothing happens......I don't even get the passport start up screen anymore. I took my box to TW, and they said they were all out of HD DVRs.
My new TV is the Sharp Aquos LC-52D62U
Thanks DSperber I guess I'll have to give them a call once I get back into town to see what the prices are going to be.
Thanks for your feedback.
Rudy
Well I'm back in town today and have promptly given them a call about adding a phone service to my current list of services, and was told that phone service was not available in my area.
So it's Verizon or Vonage for me. :( I hope Vonage stays afloat for at least a little while. :(
She was very nice though and gave me the prices I would have paid had I been able to subscribe to that service. It's $44.95 for the Unlimited Plan and $34.95 for California Unlimited plus taxes and fees.

HI,
I am quite frustrated with the programming setup in TWC. There are several shows on cable that repeat the original new episodes 2 or 3 time a week. When I set up the series, these duplicates often conflict with other series.
I know that I can set up the manual programming by time and specific day. Is it only me frustrated because I cannot just program a series by the program name?
I have reported this several times via phone but the operators have no clue about what I am trying to say.

I think the Dodger games were being broadcast on KCAL 9 in HD, as most of their road games are. When that happens, FSN-Prime doesn't do a HD telecast.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't on KCAL, did you actually see it on KCAL? There doesn't seem to be much correlation between which games are on KCAL vs FSN-PT and whether the game is home or on the road (Dodger's Schedule with TV coverage (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/lad/schedule?v=cal&m=08&y=2007))

I ran into the same situations and received the follwoing replay from an AVSFroum member:
"Ok here is another solution to a problem where same episode records many times during a week.
You go to Menu, then DVR, then I believe Scheduling Recording or new recording (I am not next to my dvr) and first it asks you to set up a day and a time and then it asks you which channel, and then u have an option to change it into a series recording as usual."
Now, this does work, ie records the show on the specific time and day I want and never the repeated weekly airings, but with one caveat: the recorded show has no name in the DVR's My Recordings.
markt170 08-15-07, 04:44 PM After three years, my first Moxi box died. I woke up and saw that the clock had gone dark. The power was still on because I could hear the normal loud sound of the box. I took it to the TW office in Van Nuys, and they handed me what they said was a new Moto 3416 box. I already miss the Moxi guide and don't like the grid guide, the ads on the guide, the need to hit guide and fav, and that fav always starts at the first channel instead of where you are, the skipping functions seem choppy, and they don't have that 2 second skip back. I'm probably going to get the new direct-to-consumer Moxis when they come out this fall, but only if Digeo backs them with a good warranty and way to replace them that's as convenient as what I just did. Also, I need a new remote with macros for this dvr. Any suggestions?
Ron_Mexico81 08-15-07, 06:52 PM ...Well I got a new 8300HD box and the HDMI works fine. Just wondering if any new model HD DVRs are going to be available for Time Warner in Chatsworth.

Thanks!

I suspect the lady at TW was talking out of the wrong end of her torso, not that I'm that much of a hater, I just find it hard to believe that a completely new box could get this close to release without any buzz here

DSperber 08-15-07, 11:51 PM HI,
I am quite frustrated with the programming setup in TWC. There are several shows on cable that repeat the original new episodes 2 or 3 time a week. When I set up the series, these duplicates often conflict with other series.
I know that I can set up the manual programming by time and specific day. Is it only me frustrated because I cannot just program a series by the program name? This has been discussed many times, and the problem starts with the TV Guide information itself. If the INFO shows "(new)" or something like that, it will be picked up and recorded by the Moto iGuide software as satisfying your "new episodes only" criteria. Since TV Guide's info (perhaps at the request of the content provider) shows "(new)" for multiple showings throughout that first week of the episode's run (e.g. on HBO, SHO, etc.), there's simply nothing that can be done to prevent this from occurring. I've heard Tivo has some patented software to prevent this from happening within a 28-day period of the first showing of a true first-run episode, but that software is not in the Moto boxes.
Only if TV Guide removes "(new)" after the very first showing, leaving that area simply non-annotated, will anything change. Definitely, "(repeat)" prevents recording, as will something other than "(new)" including nothing. But "(new)"... you're going to have trouble.
As do I, for the same reason.
So, what are the possible solutions?
Well first, you can manually go through your upcoming recording schedule and for each extraneous unwanted duplicate that appears following the first showing (limited, of course, by the fact that the Guide only goes out two weeks into the future) and specifically mark "DO NOT RECORD THIS PROGRAM" for each such occurrence. This is annoying and bothersome, and actually sometimes doesn't work when you have multiple such series set up that all seem to do this. Often, you can "DO NOT RECORD" one program and then do it again on a second program and the first program magically gets un-checked... now showing that it will be recorded again! And you just can't get BOTH of them to not record! Very frustrating (and obviously a bug that should be fixed). This approach will work, mostly, but it still takes time and is manual you have to remember to do it.
Or, you can manually program a recording (just like with an old VCR) for a specific station on a specific date at a specific time and for a specific duration. As has been pointed out, this has the major drawback of not showing the program information in the MyDVR list of recordings. The listing is simply by date/time. Also, this has the second drawback of not following any schedule changes that might occur (special start time on some day because of preemption by another program or sporting event, especially long duration for a special double-episode, etc.). It doesn't skip repeats, and it doesn't not record even if the show is not on at all that night for some reason. All in all, I don't recommend this approach for these reasons.
Instead, I recommend simply "grinning and bearing it", and just DO NOT PROGRAM A SERIES RECORDING FOR THESE PROBLEM SERIES ON PROBLEM CHANNELS! Forget the obviously holy grail of having this work perfectly: it's not going to!
Instead, just look through the Guide grid every week or two as time moves on, and set your upcoming recordings for the next week or two with single-click record on the Guide cell for the program you want to record on the one night and one time you want it recorded. Period. Treat that first showing of the week as the one-and-only recording, and use the Guide to show you when it's on, and then just single-click Select/OK and confirm that you want it recorded. Done.
You'll end up with the red single-show icon in the Guide grid cell for your upcoming recording, rather than the red series icon. And you'll never have unwanted duplicates again. Yes, this is still a manual process rather than a "set it and forget it" series event, but it is very easy and intuitive. Just browse the Guide every so often, check your upcoming recordings every so often, and be sure that your desired shows are going to be recorded on the one night/time/channel you want. If you don't see them, check the Guide.
You have two weeks of Guide info so you'll have to do this at least every two weeks. I can live with it. Plus, the recordings acquired by this method end up in the MyDVR list with the program name, as you'd want.
Remember... this really only happens on premium channels like HBO and SHO where they do this. You're not going to have this problem with primetime network broadcasts (e.g. "Lost", "Boston Legal", "So You Think You Can Dance", etc.) which are only shown as "(new)" on the one night of the week when the new show is shown.
On an added note. I've run into an anomoly of iGude recording. I set it to record The Tonight Show and keep 2 episodes. I also set it to record Late Night and keep one episode. For Letterman, it does just fine, for Leno it keeps ALL the episodes! It used to get confused by the middle of the night repeat, but that was replaced by poker and now I just get every episode!
jjigglers 08-16-07, 07:13 AM I dont see any talk in the latest pages in this thread about using normal "rabbit ears" to catch HD signals. I'm new to HD; is this still possible? I live near the 405/2 intersection (near Westwood)
DSperber 08-16-07, 07:33 AM I dont see any talk in the latest pages in this thread about using normal "rabbit ears" to catch HD signals. I'm new to HD; is this still possible? I live near the 405/2 intersection (near Westwood)I recently purchased a small indoor amplified antenna... RCA AND525, cost me about $33 at Fry's. I needed an amplified indoor HDTV antenna for the ATI TV Wonder 650 PCI card I put into my PC and this one provides up to 45db of gain (based on a dial).
Fantastic! I get EVERY digital channel in the LA area (I live in the Marina) on my PC, including channels I don't get on my Sony XBR960's ATSC tuner or JVC DT100U's ATSC tuner, both of which are fed from my building's roof antenna. For example I get KCOP-DT (13.1) on my PC from this little indoor RCA AND525, but don't get it OTA from the roof antenna.
But the answer to your question is YES. The modern equivalent of "rabbit ears" is perfectly suitable to HDTV requirements, and it works great (at least if you're not in a problem reception area and I don't believe you are).
I dont see any talk in the latest pages in this thread about using normal "rabbit ears" to catch HD signals. I'm new to HD; is this still possible? I live near the 405/2 intersection (near Westwood)
I live nearby to you. I face East on the 3rd floor and have a clear view out my windows. I use an unamplified "Silver Sensor" antenna and get all the LA channels too, most in the 90's for signal strength. Great pictures. My friend lives a little North of us in Brentwood and has a new building blockink his Easterly access and gets crappy signal, even with an amplified antenna. Bottom line buy an antenna (NOT a Terk IMHO) where you can return it. Give it a try. Most antennas are now labeled if they are HD ready, the truth is they're just UHF antennas. If you have an old loop antenna that'll work! Rabbit ears, not so much, those are VHF.
I started seeing HD On Demand notices on the promo videos on the VOD channel. So I looked and couldn't find them  . I called up and the bottom line is "former Adelphia" folk have to wait until March 2008. :(
Adelmoxi 08-16-07, 01:02 PM hey guys,
I just wanted to know what you guys are paying monthly for your digital cable? I am paying $51.04 (just 1 6416 w/th HD & and Choices tiers) with 1 analog outlet. I am still within my 12 month "promo" period when I switched from Adelphia pricing to TWC's. I have 3 more billing cycles left at that price, after that it will go up $15.00 to $66.04.
I live in Fullerton and don't get KTLA (CW) in HD
Anybody know if they're planning to bring the CW to HD anytime soon? I'd love to watch Smallville in HD
I'm in the same boat, out here in the Colton/San Bernardino area. Does anyone know why it's unavailable and if anything is being done to get it added to the HD line-up by 09/27/07.
Isn't it amazing that a Warner network (CW) can't get carriage on a Warner cable system (TWC). It doesn't get any weirder than that, then again it must!

I guess UPN took the lions share of control when they merged with the WB
It's also amazing that when local communities get assurances that ALL local channels will be carried by the winning cable bidder, somehow this DOES NOT include the HD eqivalent channel?!? I might understand the exclusion of the secondary "dot" channels but NOT the primary HD channel! something is VERY wrong here. This should not even be an issue!
so does anyone know what the exact issue is and what they are doing to fix it? this can't be a bandwidth issue, can it?

Fixing it would require admitting that something is "broken." Given how TW's CSR's and Techs behave I don't think they are capable of ever admitting any part of their system is "broken." Sure, they occasionally have "outages" but NOTHING is ever "broken."

I'm having a ton of problems with my HD channels. I'm on Vineland & Whipple. Mainly at night, and every night, for a lack of a better term my HD channels crap out. Major tiling, sound drops out. Makes it unwatchable at times. It's especially frustrating when it happens with something I had recorded.
I had a tech here yesterday morning. He tested the signal, installed a new splitter and cables, but said that he'd need to be here when the problem occurs, and of course it's not going to happen when they're here to check it out. Things don't work out that way. And then a few hours after he left, the problem started again, and began tonight again during Entourage.
Has anyone else had these problems and if so, were they remedied? I have the 3416.

Wow you really are in the know. Thanks for the reply, although I'm sad to hear that NGC is not going to be available in HD anytime soon, they have a lot of HD programming and it is actually somewhat worth watching, unlike all the other poop that is on TV these days.
Do you happen to know if Fox Sports HD channels will get their own channel or will they continue to be broadcast on the OnDemand channel as before?
Thanks and great to have you here on this forum.

brewsbro 08-22-07, 03:28 PM upland/ontario/rancho outage? anyone losing their cable in these areas? This is the second day we have lost our cable signal around noon time. Yesterday the cable came back sometime late. TWC CSR's say nothing is going on in my area? Just wondering.

markt170 08-22-07, 04:06 PM There's a bug in my DVR!
No not a technological flaw -- an actual insect. My Moxi died last week, and took it to the TWC office in Van Nuys, and they handed me a Motorola 3516. I took it home, and noticed a weird bug on the back of the unit. I killed it, and thought nothing more of it. When I plugged in the DVR, I realized it was used because it had someone else's programs recorded on it and several series recordings -- mostly Nickalodean, so it was either a 12 year old kid, or an adult with very strange taste. Last night, I saw another of the same kind of bug, but this time it was on the face of the clock BEHIND the glass. So evidently there is a colony of these bugs living inside the dvr. It's that or else I'm getting National Geograhic or that HD Net show "Bugging with the Rudd" in EXTREME HD, where actual bugs come out at you. Anyway, I took the DVR in this morning and they replaced it with a brand new unit -- one which actually looks like a newer model with a large black panel on the front.
Garvacious 08-22-07, 05:23 PM OK, I am new to the whole DTV thing so bear with me please...
My new TV has a QAM tuner built in, and I thought "great, no need to rent TWC's special HD set top box". Well, I was right about that but for some reason their digital channel lineup does not match what my tuner displays for channel info.
My digital channels come in as numbers like "111.83". I don't know what TWC does on their set top boxes to convert this to a regular channel number, but it looks like my tuner does not have this ability. In addition, it does not seem as though TWC broadcasts any channel info with the signal, so the only way I know that a certain channel is, say, TNT, is if I watch it long enough and find out. I have heard that the digital channel notation normally matches the analog simulcast (like, if ABC is 2, then the digital version would be "2.1", HD version would be "2.2" etc.) but this doesn't even seem to be true. The analog, digital, and HD versions are totally different, random numbers.
Is there anyway I can make sense of all this or does TWC do this crap on purpose to force me to rent their box?

I have heard that the digital channel notation normally matches the analog simulcast (like, if ABC is 2, then the digital version would be "2.1", HD version would be "2.2" etc.) but this doesn't even seem to be true. The analog, digital, and HD versions are totally different, random numbers.
Is there anyway I can make sense of all this or does TWC do this crap on purpose to force me to rent their box?
Welcome to QAM. Yes you need a box if you want CNN on 206 not 85.23.
One other idea is the Harmony 880 which can "favoritize" 16 channels per activity, so you press one button and the remote sends out 85.23.
The good news is QAM is free and you'll find "some" premium non scrambled ie no HBO channels.
Garvacious 08-22-07, 07:36 PM Thanks. I've also heard an ugly rumor that some cable companies frequently change where a certain channel is found, i.e. today CNN is at 85.23 but tomorrow it will be at 97.84, or something like that. Is this true?

I haven't seen that on a chronic scale, but channels can and do move. Sometimes there are new ones! Just scan and search every so often. Sometimes there are channels you don't get with the box. i.e. We don't officially get WGN Chicago, but it's there.
Garvacious 08-22-07, 08:24 PM Thanks for all the info. One more thing- do you understand why on my set the QAM numbers dont match up with the analog numbers (i.e. ABC -7 is not 7.1 for digital and 7.2 for the HD version)? I thought this was the way it was supposed to work but maybe I'm wrong.

This is up to the channel map that's sent out over QAM, which is completely different from how OTA channels map (like you describe)
"Time Warner Cable is adding five channels to its basic digital package. Beginning August 31, subscribers with the basic digital package will be able to catch ESPN News, ESPN Classic and ESPNU, as well as Fox Soccer and Fox Reality."
So this means you don't need to have the sports tier to view these channels!
So why is it they can add all these other non-broadcast channels, but can't get the HD feed of a basic broadcast channel like CW(KTLA)?

money
money
So true, which is why I do everything I can to lower my bill to them. I went through all the tiers and dropped them all except HD as none offered more than one channel of true interest. I normally add and delete HBO in quarterly cycles to see Bill Maher or Curb. After they tried to add a change "fee" last time for cancelling it, I'm not adding it any more. There are alternatives. The ultimate will be when FiOS is available and I can truly lower my bill to TWC, even if it's more to VeriZon. I even got to return my cable card as my new TV doesn't use one!
But how can it be a money issue when the CW is owned by the same company that owns TWC
DougDingle 08-23-07, 05:52 PM But how can it be a money issue when the CW is owned by the same company that owns TWC
It's a money issue, but perhaps not in the way you would think.
Some content vendors charge for their content to be carried, some pay to be carried, and the carrier (TW) is forced by law to carry local stations for free (at the moment).
So faced with somewhat limited bandwidth, if the choice is to carry the CW in HD for nothing, or carry a different and paying originator's HD feed (or six paying SD feeds), the decision is pretty simple from a business standpoint.
There are other variables, of course, such as keeping up with competition from Verizon fiber and DTV and Dish, which also factor in apart from the money.
But how can it be a money issue when the CW is owned by the same company that owns TWC
The "C" in CW is CBS
The "W" in CW is Warner
KTLA is owned by Tribune who may own the most CW affiliates including Chicago and New York.
The WB television network was a joint venture between the Warner Bros. film studio and Tribune Company and shut down a year ago.

Jeffrey47 08-24-07, 02:23 PM I continue to get the runaround from tech support at TW. Both the tech manual, marketing lit, and remote guide say that PIP is enabled in the box. One would assume that PIP would then work on any set, not just a PIP capable set. I have two 3416 boxes and PIP doesn't work on either of them. I get the standard runaround from tech and the CSR's - some point me to the instructions on how to use the remote (I'm really not that stupid) and some say that you need to have a PIP enabled set but can't explain then why the box has PIP functionality. (I actually had to explain to one CSR what PIP is). Any thoughts on this?
Thanks.

Ther's no PiP. It's all been a bad dream. WAKE UP! We're still in Adelphia or Comcast land. It's all just a bad dream!

Jeffrey47 08-24-07, 02:45 PM Absolutely amazing. The installers, tech, and CSR's are sooooo clueless. Should be some truth in advertising thing on this but it is TWC. Can't wait for FiOS but Verizon is no walk in the park either.
twelvepbrs 08-24-07, 04:19 PM PIP works on the SA-8300HD boxes, I used to have one with TW up in Chatsworth, and also had one briefly with TW in Westminster, and it has absolutely nothing to do with your tv, the box handles all of the video processing to overlay one video on top of another with the ability to move it around and resize it, it was actually pretty cool

I'm on the "waiting for FiOS" bandwagon too. I just keep thinking, be careful for what you wish, you may get it!
HD_crazy 08-24-07, 11:52 PM I really dont like TWC because its so expensive!! I was wondering how much you guys are paying a month?? Im paying $101.28 and its starting to kill me, plus I dont think theres any promos going on right now too..... I remember when it was Adelphia and it was only $71.....
Heres my bill.........
Broadcast Cable @ $12, standard cable and HDTV tier............$44.95
Additional digital tiers....................................................... $10
Premium Channels.................................................... ........$27
Digital video recorder.................................................... ....$8.95
Digital video recorder service.............................................$4.95
Franchise Fee......................................................... ........$5.34
FCC regulartory fee......................................................... ..$.07
Total....................................................... ......................$101.28
onastov 08-25-07, 06:11 AM Do you really need 100s of channels???
I pay $13.15 a month:
Broadcast cable $12
Fr. Fee $1.08
FCC Reg. Fee $.07
and this includes 5 HD channels: cbs, nbc, abc, pbs, and fox. The 4 shows that I regularly watch (Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, American Idol, Grey's Anatomy) are in HD and on these networks. For other shows (e.g. on HBO), you can just wait for DVDs. For movies, I got Netflix at $9 a month (one at a time, so roughly about 4 movies each month).
No need to pay the ridiculous fees for the cable box/DVR - I got an HTPC with a QAM card that records whatever I want.
IMHO, 4-5 hours of TV per week is more than enough. Get out of the house and go work out, hike, bike, go to the beach, read a book, socialize ...

To each his/her own, I guess. I on the other hand watch several hours of tv a day a little more reasonable. That's not to say I don't work out, read, socialize, go to the beach, etc. I just enjoy watching movies, sports, and television a lot. I guess I am of the generation which is addicted to the digital age.

jasonvr 08-26-07, 12:52 AM anyone else have audio problems for the SD/AZ NFL-Preseason game? sounds like the audio is clipping
Not hearing any clipping, but the audio is horribly out of sync.
twelvepbrs 08-26-07, 01:57 AM even at 9:52 PM? they seemed to have fixed the clipping for me by before 9:00 PM (i think), didn't notice any sync problems. I was watching through D* and OTA, just checking if anyone else noticed the problem. The clipping went away during commercials, so i think it's a tech problem with the production at the game.
jasonvr 08-26-07, 02:14 AM I noticed the horrible sync on TWC when they brought on someone for an interview. I tried switching over to OTA but couldn't get a shot where they had someone talking while their head was actually on the screen.

Moxi® available again in TW/LA territory
Forgive the spam...you are being sent this update because you signed up on moxi.com to receive more information about our product.
Some of you in the LA region have reported that your Moxi unit was replaced with a different DVR.
We have just received word from TimeWarner that they are releasing a number of units back into circulation.
If you are interested in getting Moxi for the first time or getting it back, all you need to do is call and ask for one.
Good luck - please do not hesitate to let us know if you have trouble getting one- and we will see what we can do to help from our end.

markt170 08-27-07, 08:04 PM I got the same email. Note that the email does not say anything about whether these newly available Moxis (I doubt they are new; they're just returns like the two I just returned) have the latest software upgrade. I now have two DCH 3416's instead of two Moxi's. While I prefer the Moxi guide, overall the benefits of the 3416s prevail: quieter; everything responds faster; holds more; the IR receiver is extremely sensitive, so you can point virtually anywhere in the room. The biggest negative of the 3416 is that you can't de-select the dozens of useless channels; instead, you have to hit guide, and then hit favorites on the remote, and when you do that, the channel starts at the lowest channel instead of the channel you were watching. I solved the two step process by programming a macro key on my URC-200 Automator remote to do both steps. That's a big improvement. As nice as these 3416s are, I'll still consider the Moxi when it goes on sale directly to consumers - assuming decent price for unit and mate, lower monthly cable bill, and an excellent warranty and replacement program. It's hard to beat the convenience of just taking my broken dvr to the local cable office and getting replaced instantly.
LambentMaterial 08-28-07, 02:32 AM Hello everyone.
I have a question about canceling my TWC service. I am moving next week to an area where Verizon FiOS is available, so I will not need my TWC service anymore.
Anyway, I usually pay my bill through the LA PayXpress website. They bill me at the 30th of every month...and the statement says I am paying for service from the 5th day of the following month to the 5th of the day after. For example, they will bill me on August 30th for Sep. 5 - Oct. 5.
Do I need to cancel my service before the 30th to avoid any problems, or am I fine as long as I cancel before the 5th?
Thanks.
can I inquire what part of LA are you moving to where FIOS is available?
LambentMaterial 08-28-07, 03:07 AM Well, I am moving from Whittier to Chino.
Canceling Service
Service may be terminated upon 5 days advance notice and with the return of all equipment to Time Warner. No charges will be assessed to an account for failure of Time Warner to complete the disconnect, unless reasonable access to the premises for the work to be completed was not provided. A forwarding address may be needed in case a refund check or balance is due.

SPDICKEY 08-28-07, 05:44 PM My recordings on my Motorola 3416 are all seeming to start about :30 seconds to one minute late on all channels for the past few weeks.
I'm old Adelphia on the West LA line-up. Is the clock wrong? Anyone else seeing this?
I just went through all my settings and started the important ones 2 minutes early to make sure i get the first of the show, but that interferes with recordings that end at the top of the hour. Any suggestions?

I've caught the TW clock being wrong before. As recently as last week. It sometimes only lasts a few minutes. I've called on the issue and told the CSR to report the clock being off. I have enough "atomic" clocs to see what the time shuld be so If they're in sync with each other and the DVR is off, the DVR is wrong.

You're not the only one - I'm in Calabasas and have been having the same problem consistently for the last couple of weeks and getting worse. My only experience complaining to customer service was, shall we say, less than satisfactory. I was assured that their servers are synchronized and working correctly, as are all the cable boxes on the network, so if my shows are being recorded late then "the networks must be starting their shows earlier than the scheduled start time" according to the CSR I talked to.
I expect nothing more from the company who thinks that giving me standard cable modem speeds for the "extreme" price is supposed to make me thrilled, when paying for standard cable modem speed gets me half the advertised speed.
stuckinla 08-29-07, 05:40 PM I just added the sports tier in anticipation of college football (FCS channels!)
and I had a few questions:
1. A post earlier indicated that ESPN News and Classic were moving to basic digital, has anyone had any confirmation that this was true? The CS rep did not hear of this.
2. ESPNU is starting up today or as late as 8/31, the CS Rep said that this would be on the Variety Tier. Why are so many sports channels on the Variety Tier (other than to make us pay more); isnt it ridiculous that ESPN News, Classic, ESPNU and Versus are not carried in the sports tier!
okay the end.
limacharliewhisk 08-29-07, 07:00 PM Do I need to cancel my service before the 30th to avoid any problems, or am I fine as long as I cancel before the 5th?
TWC will prorate the bill for the number of days that you do have service, so you really don't need to return it on a specific date to get your full month's worth of service. You will get a refund for the partial days of the month if you don't use a full month of service in your final month.
I noticed this when I switched from a regular digital STB to the HD STB, giving me credit on my service for the remaining days of the month for the regular STB, and then starting a new billing period for the HD STB.

While I tend to agree that something is up with TWC it is possible the networks are messing around before the season starts. Networks hate DVR's and they might be experimenting with an assault on those of us with them this season. NBC did that a little bit last year with Heroes; for a number of episodes the show ended 2-3 minutes later than in the guide. This happened to me with my Moxi and a friend with a Moto unit on Cox The theory goes that if they mess with your recording you'll go back to watching live and not miss the opportunity to see the same commercial 10 times in one hour.
Adelmoxi 08-31-07, 12:30 PM I am just curious, did Comcast sub-contract? From what I remember Adelpia didn't. So why is TWC doing it now? Is it because their teritory has grown?

Adelphia did sub to my knowlege. There were trucks out there with magnatic stickers on them. I think one guy came to me for a service and showed an ID because he didn't have an Adelphia uniform. That was awhile ago, so who remembers...

I posted a message on the Moxi thread in HDTV recorders alluding that TWC wants to get rid of Moxi. For example, TWC has not upgraded their boxes to 4.0 yet.
Moxiguy claimed this is not the case. I am skeptical. If they upgraded to 4.0 they might have credibility.
Your post leaves me doubtful.

mikeinto 09-01-07, 07:29 PM Nothing here in T.O yet. Then again if a Time Warner CSR told you it was available now starting looking for it sometime in 2008. Also does anyone know when TWC is making the transition to switched digital video in SoCal?
lucki4u 09-01-07, 08:02 PM TWC has stated that it will transition half of its markets to SDV by the end of the year. They never stated which markets though.

I'm not even seeing the game in HD right now, just trying to check if anyone else is getting it
jasonvr 09-02-07, 12:15 AM SC Game is definitely coming thru in HD here as well. Other games were on as well earlier today. The OU vs North Texas was on and they ended the coverage early to get over to the SC game (it was out of hand anyways). There was another game earlier today as well, but I don't remember which one. I am also seeing visual artifacts, but I'm not sure if it's the FSN broadcast or TWC. The whole screen will go blurry, including the score graphics at the top, and then everything comes back into focus.

bruce73 09-03-07, 02:18 PM System seems to be down in the Echo Park region, specifically around the Los Feliz Oaks. Anyone else?
Yeah, breakup on all channels here in Los Feliz by Marshall High (out of Eagle Rock headend). Don't know when it started; all was fine the last time I checked at 6pm last night, but a recording I made at 11pm last night is totally messed up.
Definitely a drag, but considering there have been no power outages in my neck of the woods this weekend, I'll count my blessings. :)
EDIT: Later that same day...decided to call TWC and see if they could confirm a problem in the area. They show nothing, but then, it's Labor Day, so who knows how quickly some CR god knows where -- probably Colorado -- would be made aware of it. Don't think it's my STB (altho' with this heat it's extremely hot to the touch), as my bedroom TV (which has just a straight-from-the-wall cable hookup) is showing poor reception as well. Bottom line, if anyone else in 90027 or vicinity is having problems, give a call to TWC so they can get some sort of handle on it.
EDIT: Still later that same day...problem seems to have been solved. All channels look good.
kelliot 09-03-07, 10:21 PM My guess is that they will use SDV for On-demand HD. In my area, PPV is essentially SDV and not scrambled-QAM. If I go to a certain range of channels, PPV movies show up. Occasionally they FF or FREW.
Have any of you had DirecTV in the past? I'm seriously considering getting it for what I understand is supposed to be a significant increase in HD programming, plus it has the NFL Package available.
Is DirecTV any good? Or, will I just begin reading about the same type of complaints about the satellite TV company?
Thanks!

I did have D* for about 2 years and canceled when I've got my HD TV. At that time, their offering in HD was non-existing.
I can't speak about their current HD and the quality of the image as compared to cable HD, but one feature I always liked was the possibility to switch your premium channels online [in your account, on the Internet] in almost real-time. For ex. I used to have HBO, and sometimes there was something interesting on SHO... just logged into my account, a few clicks, and in 2min. I was watching SHO.
Other than that, never had issues with service, image quality on analog TV was better than cable, service was cheaper [I guess now they are same with cable?], the menu was far better and more user friendly than the current TW "guide" [you could setup favorite channels and watch only those, up to 5 separate lists].
If the current HD quality they offer is similar to cable, I would switch back in no time.
DougDingle 09-07-07, 11:07 AM Have any of you had DirecTV in the past? I'm seriously considering getting it for what I understand is supposed to be a significant increase in HD programming, plus it has the NFL Package available.
Is DirecTV any good? Or, will I just begin reading about the same type of complaints about the satellite TV company?
Thanks!
I was with them for about 7 years, switching to TW this January. I had three of the DirecTivo boxes (sat receiver+TiVo).
The good news is that over seven years, the only service interruption I ever had was the few times we had severe rainstorms in L.A.
The bad news: Their prices kept increasing. Their image quality kept decreasing with more and more compression applied to accommodate additional channels. And while they do carry all the NFL games for a price (and that price has jumped radically over the years), the quality of the images the last time I saw NFL Prime Ticket (about 2 years ago) was truly awful.
When it came time to get an HD program source, I found their offering to be inferior technically - highly compressed and manipulated, "HD-lite" as some call it. Their HD DVR, an in-house engineering effort, was no longer TiVo enabled, was having HUGE problems with constant software updates, and many, many bugs. And they insisted that any change in service required a new two year commitment, as if they were a cellular provider.
So I got TW to check out their quality, and found the worst of it to be at least as good a DTV, and the HD quality to be much better. Plus, I was able to buy TiVos for HD use. I've been very pleased so far.
Incidentally, now that Murdoch is going to relinquish control of DTV, there are rumors they may offer TiVo-based DVRs again in the future. This may not be important to you, but it was very important to me.
And lastly, let me point out that I work in TV and movie production as an HD engineer and video control person, and so work with pristine uncompressed images viewed on $25K monitors every day, so I'm more critical than most about image quality. What I see as imperfections in the DTV HD transmission may not bother you at all. Try to have a look on a decent non-plasma monitor and judge for yourself.
DiveFan 09-08-07, 03:16 AM I've searched this thread and TWC's web site (hah) without getting enough details so here's my question:
I'm considering getting a PC digital tuner card with QAM capability. I'm in the TWC South Bay region (never Comcast or Adelphia). I already have digital cable service and an SA 2100 box.
Which channels are unencrypted in this area?
TIA!
alaindelon 09-08-07, 10:29 PM The Texas game contains the same horrible pulsing artifacts as last weeks USC game.I'm quite amazed that it doesn't seem to bother very many forum members. Is this the best TWC can do with channel 413?

Agreed, it looks horrible again. Does anyone have an acquaintance that receives FSN-HD via some other provider (Charter or D* or something) so that we can confirm if it is a source material problem or a TWC problem?

Whichever channels show up in basic digital, plus the HD locals. None of the $5 tiers or premium services you may be paying for are in the clear, I believe, although you can sometimes poke around and see someone else's PPV's.

Here is the link to a post in this thread that lists the QAM channels individually:

When they get their new channels up and running I may consider it again. I've had their service on hold for most of the last 2 years.
Ditto to virtually all the comments above.
RadioManTodd 09-10-07, 02:45 AM I'm hoping someone can help me. I'd greatly appreciate any advice.
My wife and I purchased our first home and closed escrow last week. We were aware of the closing date, and our acutal move is planned for Wednesday the 13th.
Originally I called about a week before closing and requested service to be transferred (I'm currently a TWC customer in Santa Clarita, moving about a mile away) and was told that I would have to come to an office with my escrow documents once we closed, because there was an active account, and the sellers had not yet called to cancel their account.
So I called my realtor, and they contacted the seller's agent, and we were eventually told "they called to cancel service so it should be OK."
Great. So we closed last Friday (the 31st) and I called Time Warner on Tuesday the 4th figuring that I would have no further problems, and would have plenty of opportunity for them to do whatever they need to do for me to take my exisisting equipment and move it over. (which should require them doing very little, right?) I couldn't be more wrong.
Apparently, the sellers' official "move out" appointment with TWC is not until the 10th. So the TWC representative tells me that they cannot even generate an order for me to start service until that order on the 10th is closed.
Huh?
I asked "can you guarantee me that someone will be available to come on the 13th whem we're moving in?"
"No. I can tell you it won't be likely we'll be able to get anyone there for 2-3 weeks."
So through no fault of my own, Time Warner is making me wait and be without their service for as much as 3 weeks? How does this make any sense?
I'm planning on getting into the local office to see if some face to face conversation doesn't get this resolved. But I find this "policy" completely unacceptable. Basically a.) they're losing revenue by me being down effective the 13th at my current location and not on for 2-3 weeks at my new location. Further, they're going to lose MORE revenue because I'm about 30 seconds from headed back to DirecTV (the only reason I'm gone is because my current ground floor apartment faces north and theres no place for me to put a dish... I'd been a DirecTV customer for 6 years prior to moving to Santa Clarita).
If anyone has some insight, I'd certainly appreciate it.

Did D* ever treat you like TW* is treating you now? Is THAT your answer?

Nope. Not at all. Eventually I'll be going back to D* but for now I want to do all the inside wiring before they come out and tell me the best way to install is drilling wire through my exterior walls (like they've done on my neighbors).
And I can't go without football!!!!

Do you have a crawl space beneath the house? That's how my friend got the wire from D* in and up through the floor or into a wall and out a wall jack depending on room access.

Well I guess I would look at this from a different perspective. TWC is basically offering you free cable service until they come out and move the service onto your name. So move into the house and enjoy the free service. Granted you may have a channel line up of previous owners, but hey it's free. And you have done everything in your power to remedy the situation.
What do you think about this?

If the house is wired for cable, the D* installer can diplex the D* signal through the existing cable without interfering with the cable service; this is what they did in my house. I still get HSI and locals through TW, and D* all on the same cable. In my house it works out great, because the cable comes into the house at the southeastern corner of the roof, which is right where the dish needed to be.
OR
You can just have the D* installer disconnect your cable where it comes into the house

TWCs picture isn't as bad as DTV with blurriness and pixelation. Plus my internet is blazing fast :D But DTV is launching a new satellite and switching to MPEG4, so that may remedy the problem. If you need football that bad then go for it. Most people on here have the cash anyway :(
alaindelon 09-11-07, 12:45 AM I remember getting something in the mail from TWC in June stating that they would transmit ESPN HD in the clear after some date.I didn't think about it until tonight because MNF interferes with my HD Net programming(i have one cablecard enabled dvr and pay for the HD tier). So i poked around and found a picture only feed of ESPN HD on channel 103-518 on my other receiver.Does anyone know what Qam channel has ESPN HD with sound?
