View Full Version : Los Angeles, CA - TWC
Does anyone know for sure if TWC offer FSN HD in Los Angeles area, specifically in San Gabriel? I don't see it in the HDTV package on their site but some people here seem to have it.
Can't tell you if it is available in San Gabriel, but here in West Los Angeles it is available. It is channel 413 if you have a cable box and channel 100.507 over clear QAM.
Also if I subscribe to HDTV package(TNT HD, LOCAL HD, ESPN HD, etc) can I just use my QAM-capable TV to tune to these channels without a box? My TV doesn't have a cablecard slot.
Thanks.
No those channels are scrambled and are not available over clear QAM.
We will all have a unique opportunity to compare what a great negative effect subchannels have on PQ when both KNBC & KCBS will simulcast the Patriots game with the NFL network this Saturday.Look for much more pixellation on KNBC who keep insisting on carrying stupid subchannels thus ruining the quality on their HD broadcast. The massive pixellation every Sunday night has bothered me for a long time and it got even worse with the introduction of digital raw 4.4.I really wish that they would consider changing to 720p like KCET did as the pixellation is now much less nowadays.I really wish KNBC would do something before this summer with the Bejing Olympics comming up but i'm sure NBC is mandating 1080i for owned and operated stations.
I felt the same between CBS and NBC even OTA but I wound up watching the game on NFL Network on D* as I perceived their picture as even better. It could be because they originated so it was one less bounce?? or it was just me but I thought it was stunning.
carljanderson 12-30-07, 12:24 PM CBS is winning hands down here in Fountain Valley even the quality of sound is miles ahead
That is odd (or maybe I am), but I had to switch from CBS to NBC due to sound issues. On CBS, I kept getting brief audio drops.
(TWC in Huntington Beach).
AnthemAVM 12-30-07, 01:02 PM CBS blew away NBC on FIOS also.

So FSN HD is available on clear QAM? I tried a scan earlier and couldn't find it. Is there always something on that channel or only when FSN HD programming is on? I think this channel is FSN HD it's showing VALPO VS UNC NCAA Basketball right now(5:00PM PST)
Dang, really want to see the Lakers tonight on HD. Thanks for the info though.

It's an On When Something's On channel but it open in QAM.

Probably because our area, Southern Cal, is unlikely to see anything until at least 2009, if then. This of course is my opinion only.
If there was exciting news to share I'm sure it would have been. ;)
Here is a link that is good to bookmark. It points to the TWC Programming Alerts. This is where all additions and changes are announced. It looks like the channel numbers for the music stations will be changed again. And sometime by February a new channel will be added called VH1 Classic. I'm certain it is not in HD though.

VH1-C is just changing from an East coast feed to West, nothing new being added.

tomas21 01-02-08, 12:38 PM Does anyone have recommendations for getting the best deal on a renewal at TWC cable?
Currently I have Digital cable + Road Runner Basic + HD DVR for $77 a month OTD. From what I can tell the best deal is the Surf + View for $79 + dvr fees + taxes coming to $100 OTD roughly.
Input is appreciated.
slickshoes 01-02-08, 05:29 PM Hopefully we might be getting some new HD soon, engadget HD posted they added A&E HD and History HD in Omaha, and this guy posted in the comments section:
"Here in Albany, NY, TWC added some new HD channels about a week before xmas: The History Channel, National Geographic, Food Network, a few cruddy sports channels, CNN-HD, Animal Planet, and several others that I can't remember right now."
This would be fantastic!

I wouldn't get my hopes up too much. For some reason, TWC provides more cutting edge HD services to markets such as Omaha, Neb., Albany, NY, and Raleigh, NC, rather than the second biggest media market in the country.
Hi,
I just spoke with TWC to find out what is required to disconnect cable tv. He tried to tell me that when I watch the Science channel HD or NatGeo HD on a friend's Direct Satellite it not really HD! I guess is 72" Plasma really upconverts very well. <bg>
I will be calling Direct to find out the details and will probably make the change in a week or two. I have to check my my remote programming guro to syncronize the installation with his schedule to program my universal remote.
I think 6 months of empty promises are enough.

If you have any friends with D* you each can get $50 for the referral. I neglected to ask my friend about it (didn't know) and felt bad for both of us.
Thanks, I do have a friend's info. How do you like their service? My worry is that I do have two HD DVR that can both record two at a time. Does Direct have this capability?

I like it just fine so far. I got a great intro package. I got the Football (Sunday Ticket) and NASCAR and Premier packages for 4 months. Then I get to choose what I'll got long term with. I have to make my decision late Feb. Yes each DVR can tune and record 2 shows. I wound up with 2 HR20s and an H21. I wanted the ability to use the ATSC tuner (the HR21 nada) so that was my reasoning. Ir you have no need for ATSC the HR21 is the newest and coolest looking (black) version out.
Thanks. This is very helpful. Where can I find info on the HR21? Who is the vendor?
CaCHooKa Man 01-03-08, 09:52 PM I'm getting an HDTV within a week and I only have standard cable from TWC. If I were to upgrade to digital cable, would I only need to add a HD receiver for the 1 HDTV and keep using the normal cables I have connected to the rest of my TVs? We have 10 TVs in total connected to the cable and it would be very expensive to have a receiver for each of them.
Thanks. This is very helpful. Where can I find info on the HR21? Who is the vendor?
DirecTV?
We're probably too far off topic for this thread. I suggest you do further research here on AVS or http://www.dbstalk.com/ for more D* info.

This would be dictated by the type of TV you are buying. If the TV you purchase will have a QAM tuner then you'll be able to tune all of the digital channels and the free HD channels from TWC without any sort of a box or even a cable card.
The free HD channels that TWC offers at the moment are CBS, NBC, CW, ABC, KCAL, Fox, my13, KCET, KCOP and FSN West.
I suggest to you that once you decide on the make and model of the television you plan on purchasing that you search for it here on avsforum. Not only will it help you make a better choice it will also be very educational. Highly recommended.
Good Luck.

picachux 01-07-08, 01:05 AM I was watching Channel 13 UPN and saw yesterday that they were broadcasting in HD. When was this added? Anyone know the QAM channel for that?
ramkla007 01-07-08, 06:08 PM I have TWC but not happy with the minimal number of HD channels. I got a call from AT&T today that their U-verse is now available in my area. Has anyone had any experience with this? Does AT&T U-verse have good quality HD transmission? They seem to have 30+ HD channels available, although it is $10 extra per month.

D* just added my-13 and KCAL in HD (about three weeks ago) for the LA locals, maybe TW is trying to keep up; although 13 doesn't really show anything in HD AFAIK (hopefully they'll do Angels' games in HD for the '08 season)
I can check what channel it is using my HDHR when I get home, but it might be different for you (i'm in westminster)

WackyPacks 01-09-08, 12:02 AM Anybody see the TWC flyer in the mail about free HD Channels? The ad says the freebies are KCBS, KNBC, KTLA, KABC, KCAL, KTTV, KCET, HD Theater, ESPN-HD, ESPN2-HD, FSN-HD, HDPPV, MusicHD, TBS-HD, and TNT-HD. Guess they mean those are free if you subscribe to a digital tier, because all those channels are not broadcasting in the clear if one is just using a QAM tuner. Yes, I know PPV channels require a box, but the ad makes it seem like all TWC subscribers get them free.

TWC over hypes EVERYTHING. Just look at their "fiber optic" commercial to compete with Verizon, The say that they have been using fiber optics for years, but in all fairness all cable company's have.

Doesn't look like there'll be much left after this massacre. Remember The NFL Network, TWC loves to cut and run, content. Now, does your bill go down for the lesser content?

The original message said Ch 13 had a notice about being broadcast in HD. That is not the same as TW having it on the cable line. There are a lot of shows that say they are broadcast in HD we do not get on the cable (e.g., History Ch, A&E, Food, etc.) Over-the-air you could get Ch 13 in HD though.

I'm "former Comcast", not Adelphia. I don't know why that should make a difference.
Do you have the HD Tier? I do.
Still have legacy pricing from your former carrier? A few months back I decided to ditch my old Comcast legacy pricing I was on and go full-on with TWC. I also have DirectTV for SD so I only need the least I'm required to have from TWC, just for HD. I pay extra only for HD Tier (and HBO + SHO premiums), and added phone. Pricewise, I'm saving money with this minimal TWC tier pricing.
Perhaps some of this is relevant.
DSperber 01-12-08, 07:37 AM there is no HD on demand menu item at allNor on my 3416 menu.
It's OnDemand -> Movies -> HD Movies
There is no "HD on Demand" labeled that.
I checked and there is no HD movies on demand here in Thousand Oaks, just regular movies at $3.99 each. Also I don't have "HD Showcase" which they keep advertising
I'm "former Comcast", not Adelphia. I don't know why that should make a difference.
It might make a difference if we're talking about what services are available. I'm "former Adelphia," and before that former Century, former...Spectacor?..., former Group W...all without having ever changed location in Santa Monica. (I think I've left one or two out.) Even under Adelphia, I had different lineups and options from people just across the line in W. LA. I don't know whether it had to do with grandfathering in old packages or accommodating the hardware that already in place or simply something in the contracts when this area would change hands every few years, but these old affiliations still seem to affect what we can or can't get.
What's weird is that the Santa Monica "jigsaw puzzle piece" contains so many fancy big-bucks show-biz people -- I'm not one, sad to say -- yet we seem to always be among the last to get the latest services.
I asked before I left TWC. Former Adelphia shouldn't expect VOD-HD until March 08 or so.
Former Comcast "should" have it now...YMMV it's TWC.

Yeah it's a 3416 HD DVR.
I have the HD Tier and I signed up for cable after TWC took over my area. TI believe Adelphia was the former carrier in my area, which might me the reason I don't have the HD On Demand service.

Im with you on this too. I read the thread "More News about HD on TWC" and looks like L.A. is not ready for SDV yet. I would like to know when is SDV will be ready in L.A so we can get more HD channels. I feel like switching to D* but I'm staying with TWC since I have internet and soon, a digital phone service.
BTW Im in Carson.

Yup considering the market here in LA you would think HD with TWC would be a priority. I really hope they get the message and start pushing out more HD. Seeing those D*V commercials pushing 85 channels is starting to rattle my nerves. I want my Dirty Jobs in HD dang it!
I'm in Torrance.

Well it has been discussed earlier and quite a lot. :)
But putting that aside, you should be able to answer your own question from the posts right on this page. To calculate a possible date you need to add up the following things.
1. When will TWC decide to roll out SDV in LA (or at least your area)
2. Once the decision is made how long will it actually take TWC to do the roll out. Be sure to include possible infrastructure upgrades as well as back end and consumer end equipment upgrades etc.
3. After all of this is done you'll need to add the amount of time it will take TWC to negotiate about 70 more contracts, to show HD content. Since currently they have at a maximum about 30 and to get to 100 as will D* 70 more are needed. To complicate things further, just because TWC signs a contract to carry the channel does not mean your regional office will actually let you see it. Current examples are the National Geographic Channel, the Food Network and several others. Some TWC subscribers on the east coast have been able to see those channels in HD for almost a year now, while we here in LA have not. For the most part I'm guessing this happens due to bandwidth limitation, or at least so I hope, but you never know.
While coming up with the estimation you need to keep in mind the size of TWC as a company, as that tends to have an enormous influence on how quickly decisions get made.
Just to give you a rough idea, the head of D* had stated in an interview that they started planning for their current HD offerings 3 years ago. Again keep in mind the size of D* and TWC.
Good Luck. :)

When TWC or any cableco switches to Switched Digital Video, does traditional analog and QAM digital go away or can they coexist?

It will/should be a balancing act. AFAIK, very popular channels won't be pushed to SDV (HD locals for example). If TWC would just replace a couple more analogs with SD-digital equivalents, they'd have plenty of room to add some of the new HD channels for which they have agreements. An analog channel takes up about six times as much bandwidth as a SD-digital channel and about two to three times as much bandwidth as an HD channel. This means that for each channel they switch from analog to SD-digital, they can add almost (about) two HD channels. The ideal change (numbers-wise IMHO), is to change three analogs to SD-digital; this would free up enough bandwidth to add FIVE HD channels!!!

Please correct me if I'm wrong. With SDV, is it true that TWC can (will) change the channels any time they want, since their STB will map to the correct numbers? so those of us w/o the STB (basic analog) will have to rescan to get the correct clear QAMs? I imagine that will render your favorite settings obsolete everytime they reshufle.

I agree with you in principal. However, my suggestion of removing the SD-Digital channels that have an analog and HD equivalent is much less controversial and does not require distribution of any hardware to all TWC subscribers. I understand that removing SD-digital does not free up as much bandwidth as removing an analog channel but it is much safer PR and customer service wise and should have already been done a long time ago.

It is exceedingly unlikely that the SDV channels will be in the clear to begin with. ;) :) So we'll have little to worry about. :)
If anyone knows anyone in North Carolina where SDV has the biggest footprint they'll be able to ask them this specifically. There are a few other places back east that have SDV as well as parts of Hawaii, I believe.

Here are a couple of interesting articles on SDV that John Mason posted in another thread on nationwide TWC programming. A very interesting read, I thought.

I think you and I may be out of luck though. The article talks about cable companies sending a signal for a single channel over multiple QAM channels to ensure proper bandwidth. So that right there all but eliminates the possibility of seeing the channels that have been placed into the SDV group over clear QAM.
And that's only one reason. There is also channel pooling coming along for SDV channels etc.

Rudy,
Thanks for pointing that out. Sounds like free QAM channels are here today gone tomorrow. I noticed what could be SDV initial deployment. In my area, the 113 to 115 are premium/on-demand/PPV channels. And I saw a lot of premium channels (eg. HBO) changed every time I flipping through those (I rescan once in awhile to see if they have channel 13 KCOP in HD yet). I'm wondering if that's SDV in action, or just on-demand broadcast?
Mad Mac 01-16-08, 04:30 PM Anyone else "lost" the clear QAM feed of KTLA HD? I'm not seeing it on my PC, TV or DVD recorder. Comes in OK on the TW PVR.
Well, I did a rescan on my HD card last night, and KTLA HD didn't come in. A check on the diagnostics of the cable box showed it as 765 MHz. Now to find where that fits in.......

No I don't think those are SDV, at least not yet. The HBO shows that you see on the channels in that range are simply On Demand shows that someone in your grid is replaying. I believe you will also see films that anyone in your grid has ordered in that same channel range.
Although the "behavior" of those channels is similar to the way SDV will behave, at least in part. Whenever SDV does get here to us in LA. Now if you read those articles you'll notice that not all the channels will be SDVed only the least watched ones in a particular area/grid. So there will still be stuff in clear QAM. Additionally the local channels cannot be SDVed either.
Speaking of articles, here is another one that some of you might find interesting. I haven't heard OpenCable discussed in a while here so here is an update on the technology from CES:

brewsbro 01-17-08, 12:23 PM I just bought a Toshiba 32" HDTV, and I am hooked directly to the basic cable line, no box. I receive 7 HD channels without any package in the Ontario, CA. area.
Over here in Upland, I have 8 HD channels on my Toshiba. Basic cable line, no box.
10-3 KTLA HD
93-1 CBS HD
93-2 NBC HD
94-1 ABC HD
94-2 FOX HD
94-3 PBS HD
104-1 KCAL HD
104-3 MHD
By Mid February E* will allow us to subscribe to all of their HD channels for $30 a month. No SD channels, just HD. As some of you may know already E* has been planning on launching a few more satellites right around this time, so that they can compete with D* in the number of their HD offerings, so their current HD offering will continue to increase. The only loss I have is 409...I turned it on at 8:30am and nothing a black screen....it came on at 10am and has been on till now (3pm)....this is a constant problem that has yet to be resolved...as for the QAM....at one time channels were all over the place....then for a brief time the listings were smart cbs 2 was 2 and 2-1...nbc 4 and 4-1...and so on...then for some unexplicable reason that all changed last week.....now starting with kcal there is no longer 9 and 9-1 now 9 is 116-6....11 is 104-84....7 is 104-85....try surfing every channel and see if you can find your QAM channels hiding...they may be there just in disguise...

Is that the sound of, finding out FiOS is available in more areas of Santa Monica??
I've been seeing mysterious road diggings up around Santa Monica but the trucks did not have a verizon logo on them necessarily. For example a couple of months ago they were digging up over by the Second street, from Santa Monica to maybe Colorado. Last month I saw a trench dug up over on Centinella south of Olympic.
Hard to say what's going on as Verizon is a secretive about their plans as TWC, and here we are bashing TWC all the time. The thing is. Even if Verizon service becomes available tomorrow, they will still have about the same number of HD channels available as TWC. Would you switch from D* to FiOS?
Of course, even if they have the approval to lay fiber, it will still take at least a couple of years to actually do it and then make the service available. In a couple of years we may start seeing SDV from TWC. Who knows.
I miss eriv's posts. He hasn't posted in a while. I wish he would clue us in, as we are hopelessly lost on what's happening as far as TWC.

P.S. Also all the digging up I have seen was in Santa Monica. You and I are in West L.A. Different city that requires a completely different and separate permit. And probably has a completely different timeline from Santa Monica. Who knows?!

I'm into D* for the long term. But Internet at 15 down and 2 up would be NICE! BTW my friend in SM who couldn't get FiOS was talking to me when I told him, I heard it was getting into SM. He checked his number and got the green light! He's near Penmar. So check the website and see if you're golden!

Yeah clearly SM will have it before us in WLA. I tried the online check and it said no. At this point I don't even know if they have an agreement to offer this service in WLA. When I have a free hour, I'll have to call Verizon FiOS and see if I can get an answer.

I've compared my over-the-air HD broadcasts with TWC and I see no difference. ESPN does not seem compressed, they have the best picture. Most of my musicHD shows look pretty good, so I can't complain. Shows with poor quality seem more of a problem with the source than the carrier (FSN for example). OF course, IMHO.

That airline has long since gone away. What are you talking about?:rolleyes:
Too Many Secrets 02-11-08, 03:07 PM Most Mso's (cable companies) have their USB ports and firewire ports disabled. The only Cable Company coming close to doing that is Charter, and maybe some regional cable companies.(thats ONLY with the legacy MOXI boxses (BMC 9022/9012. If You are looks for hard drive expansion possibility try a Cable Card DVR (i.e. latest generation Tivo's).
FCC requires a firewire enabled box be supplied upon request. Here (http://www.fcc.gov/Bureaus/Cable/Orders/1998/fcc98116.pdf) I'm just looking for my options.

Correct Dan, those shots are from the internal QAM tuners on my TV and DVD recorder. Point being that TWC are now somehow making a lot of the broadcast channels match the OTA numbers, which is what Joe asked about.
bruce73 02-11-08, 08:55 PM Looking for a STB or DVR with firewire enabled. I've searched this thread and see that the Motorola 3416 has been met with success for firewire. I have a Moxi currently and it looks like the firewire is disabled. I'm in 90022.
Any information is appreciated. TIA
My Moto 6200 STB has two firewire ports, both enabled and in use. I'm in Los Feliz (90027), Eagle Rock office.

Exactly and thank you. That means there is hope for me yet. As I believe I said earlier, Harmony remotes can only store and send 6 digits for a "Favorite" TWC using the type of tuning it does force my Samsung and Mitsubishi to get 7 digit channels. Interestingly my HP (Sharp) doesn't.

you knbow, I came home today and my DCH 3416's remote was not responding to any commands (STB functions only) I ended up unpluging the surge protector I have my entertainment stuff pluged into and it awoke. When it awoke it took a good five minutes for the STB to change to the correct time (maybe they may having problems with the DAC server).

What do people recommend if I switch out my Moxi box? I've heard that TWC has "new" cable box out but have not found any definitive info about it. I'm guessing their "new" cable boxes are the "old" 8300 and Motorolas.
I've been holding off on buying a TiVoHD because of the nightmare install issues I've read about the CableCards, plus the cost of the TiVo box + monthly TiVo fees + cost of 2 s-cards (or 1 m-card) vs. the cable company's monthly PVR fee. Plus, I know I'll lose "on-demand" abilities and switched video channels are not viewable on the TiVo.
I think the cable box I had in San Diego (Cox Cable) was an 8300. That's the SARA interface, correct? Does the Motorola offer the same craptastic interface?
One last question... I have an HDTV but do not think it has a built-in tuner. I'm not sure. It's a 2-3 year old 26" Olevia LCD. What would I need to do in order to get over the air HD channels?
- Dalsik
Cost $20 more a month, $15 of which is for leasing three boxes(when I had TW I only had the hdvr the other tvs just got the first 80 channels). Lots of HD content and select XM channels. DVR works well and has 50 hour hd capacity. HD picture quality was a shade better on TW, but they were too slow to add content and I wanted to see NHL games on Versus and the NHL network in HD. I have a year commitment, after that if TW has added more content as is planned, I probably will switch back.
GizmoDVD 02-16-08, 02:18 PM I just got the new 3416 box from my local Time Warner store (in Simi Valley, I live in Moorpark). Looks and works great so far. Now I just need to re-program the 30 second skip hack back into the new, backlit remote.
The unit is much cleaner looking.

after the 5 billionth time of me unplugging/plugging the dvr, the twc service guy finally came to save me. he went to my condo complex signal box. our 6 units were hooked up to the input by a splitter. the dude just cut my output cable and hooked it up to the input directly. and then chained the other 5 units along with another splitter.
well, it worked. my dvr service now works, and i get my missing channels back. his explanation was "now you have a stronger signal." does this make sense? why would my signal have changed all of a sudden after it worked well for 9 months? he mentioned something about the weather?
hopefully this doesn't mess with my other neighbors... fortunately, i don't think any of them do cable.

I think I had a similar problem here in Costa Mesa on the same evening that you had this problem. It happened when I was accessing the OnDemand stuff, which I hadn't looked at in a couple of months, and it locked up on me. I did the unplug/re-plug thing, and normally the TV Guide would start updating again within the hour. It didn't update at all for the next 24 hours, and I lost all channels 2 thru 125.
That's when I called TWC, and they did a reboot for me on their end. Everything came back, like OnDemand and the TV Guide stuff.
I thought it was just me, because my neighbor had everything working on his cable box.

Last week the total number of digital channels TWC was carrying over their wires was 452. I did a channel scan on the weekend and saw that number drop to 432. Yup 20 channels axed. Doing a rescan today shows 8 more digital channels gone, for a total of 424. Something is up, however, the Programming Alerts page here (http://www.timewarnercable.com/socal/programming/alerts.html) is of no assistance.
Could this really be caused by music channel reshuffling. Or are our dreams about to come true and they are cutting useless 480i channels to make room for HD channels. Hey, stop laughing. It's a valid dream. :)
Boy, how great would it be if 480i channels would get replaced by their HD equivalents.

No, definitely not. Here is what my XBR shows me as it scans.
1. It scans for analog channels. Those have not changed in a while and are at 76.
2. It scans for a total number of digital channels. Everything carried over the wire. This is the number that has gone from 452 to 424 within the last week.
3. Lastly it scans for the number of visible channels. This number often changes from somewhere around 160 to as high as 188 if NBA channels and NHL channels offer a free preview. Or when people order PPV/VOD.
Keep in mind that all cable channels are sent via QAM using MPEG2 compression. So any QAM tuner will be able to "see" them all, but only allow one to watch the ones that are unscrambled and appropriately flagged.
If you remember a few months back I reported seeing that the total number of digital channels increased by 2. And we had the Fox News Channel and some other channel show up shortly afterwards.
I want to believe that they are replacing the 480i channels with their analog counterparts to make room for their HD counterparts, which would make absolutely perfect sense. But am afraid to dream out loud like this. Something with this much common sense and ingenuity couldn't be done at a corporate level. So perhaps somewhere some poor engineer is sticking his neck out to do something great. Anyway, made me think of eriv.
At the end of the day these are just guesses, so before too long I may look quite foolish when it becomes clear why this was done.:)

What kind of throughput are you getting with your RoadRunner connection? Just in case you are curious the pricing option from RoadRunner, that I'm aware of, are:
1. $19.99 - 768K
2. $29.99 - 1.5M
3. What you have now.
Not sure if this is much help, but yeah that is quite a chunk of change.

jonathank 02-20-08, 03:16 PM I was getting that this morning, too. It came back online at approximately 12:05pm.
Anyone notice new channels or anything new? Do you need to reboot or unplug a box to get it to recognize new channels? I just moved here from the east coast (a much smaller city) and now have fewer HD channels. TWC really needs to step up to the plate. I miss my CNNHD. SciFi and Food Network in HD would be nice, too...
jonathank 02-20-08, 03:18 PM By the way, the Motorola box they dropped off (dual tuner HD DVR) is a piece of junk. I'm getting constant menu freezes and general sluggishness, something I didn't have to put up with on my Scientific Atlanta 8300.
I went into the diagnostic mode and it said the signal to noise ratio was just "fair." Could this cause menu freezes or unresponsiveness to using DVR functions like pause? I didn't think so, but this is the place to ask.

I'm seriously considering doing the same as you. If you go to internet only, they should come out and put a trap on your line to only let those frequencies through. They do offer a "Broadcast Basic" tier which runs around $15, it's essentially anything you could get with an antenna, all the channels come in both analog and digital and include HD in clear QAM (if they carry the HD feed of that broadcast channel). "Basic Cable" is $42, gives you everything analog.

Slickshoes: I'm near the corner of La Brea and Santa Monica Blvd. I'm not sure if this used to be Adelphia or not.
As for the SA8300, I asked the installer about it when I initiated service, but he said "that's what they have." I would have been happy to have another SA8300. This Motorola box is junk. It doesn't seem to play nice with my receiver (I have audio problems on occasion).
I'm fairly sure this is *not* passport software. That's what I had on my old SA box. I guess it's the other?

jonathank 02-21-08, 04:11 PM Having just moved here, I'm not familiar with TWC's practice of adding channels. Have customers received notice (or has this board leaked) channels before they were added, or did they just pop up one day?
Since TWC has FIOS competing against it in some parts of Los Angeles, I'd imagine we're in for some channel and internet bandwidth upgrades.

Looking at the "Programming Alerts" page you mentioned, most of what it shows is moving a "broadcast" channel to below 37 and a "cable" channel to above 36. What I believe will happen somewhere down the road is that they will drop "Basic Cable" (analog channels from 37 - 99). This would free up a lot of bandwidth, and their argument will be along the lines of "the vast majority of subscribers who currently receive these channels already do so via a digital converter" or words to that effect, possibly offering a reduced rate box rental for a limited time and/or free installation for those who would want/need them as a PR exercise. They will still continue to offer "Broadcast Basic" - I believe this is an FCC requirement?

It was not too long ago that "Digital Basic" was cheaper than "Basic Cable" ($39 vs $44). I figured then it was to wean people off Basic onto digital. I figured it a no-brainer decision for me at the time. Now I want the HD content, so lets clean up the channels :) I still think it is unfair that the FCC requires cable to supply analog channels for old TVs after the changeover, but does not require other sources. This seems like a burden on the cable companies. It should be up to them on whether it is a business decision to do. Me and my supply and demand attitude.... Dan
jonathank 02-21-08, 05:25 PM I just read somewhere that TWC in NYC is going all digital. They've recently sent letters out to their remaining analog customers that their service is ending.
Forgive my ignorance, but does this mean they're implementing SDV? Could TWC here in LA be preparing to do the same thing? From what I understand, that would clear up a lot of bandwidth for new HDs.

Taking your points in order....
1) I don't remember "Digital Basic" being cheaper than "Basic Cable" , but it would actually be more expensive if you take box/remote rental into account.
2) Agreed in principle on the FCC thing, this should be a commercial decision. However, if I'm making that decision, I weigh the benefit of more available HD channels to compete with satellite against consumer backlash/bad publicity. See my posting above regarding what I believe is behind TW's channel realignments in some markets. As a businessman, I see that as a reasonable compromise. A few years down the road, I then completely close down analog on the basis that the plant is becoming increasingly expensive to maintain, spare parts in short supply etc.

ben8jam 02-24-08, 12:58 PM hi there - i've been trying to search this for a while and am confused....
i recently purchased a new bravia tv - i plugged it into our cable line (via coax) and amazingly all the channels were there (time warner area) - i did a digital channel scan and it found 100 channels - duplicates of the standard cable channels - but they are weird ones like 103.661 and such...
after searching i found that i get all the local HD channels, (and for a few days had ESPNHD and MOJOHD - but those two disappeared..) - however, it's confusing since they are all over the place and odd numbered
can anyone tell me what it is i'm looking at? and how to figure out what channels are what? does anyone have like a channel guide that says what odd channel (99.15) equates to? i'm guessing that the lower channels (2-90) and the analog signal, and the weird ones (99.441, etc) are the digital signal? i can't really tell much difference between the two, think the analog actually looks better...
does this make any sense? thanks for any help..

i recently purchased a new bravia tv - i plugged it into our cable line (via coax) and amazingly all the channels were there (time warner area) - i did a digital channel scan and it found 100 channels - duplicates of the standard cable channels - but they are weird ones like 103.661 and such...
after searching i found that i get all the local HD channels, (and for a few days had ESPNHD and MOJOHD - but those two disappeared..) - however, it's confusing since they are all over the place and odd numbered
can anyone tell me what it is i'm looking at? and how to figure out what channels are what? does anyone have like a channel guide that says what odd channel (99.15) equates to? i'm guessing that the lower channels (2-90) and the analog signal, and the weird ones (99.441, etc) are the digital signal? i can't really tell much difference between the two, think the analog actually looks better...
does this make any sense? thanks for any help..
It sounds like you have basic analog (or extended basic) cable. The high numbers that you got are QAM channels. They are just digitial version of the same analog channels that you got with extended basic. These are considered "free" digital channels that TWC did not bother to block, along with the local HD channels that are always there. There is no "official guide" for QAM channels (TWC would not provide it if you'd ask), and the mapping tend to be different from one area to another. The only way is, after you've scanned, try surfing one channel to the next and make a list, and perhaps store them to your remote favorite channels. Or ask others in this forum if anyone happens to be the same area as yours and they might have already figured out the mapping.
Is anyone in SoCal getting any HD channels other than the locals, MHD, HDT, TBS, TNT, MoJo, Universal, HDNet, HDNet Movies, ESPN, ESPN2, FoxSports, HBO, Cinemax, Starz, Showtime?
I'm starting to get jealous of the offerings on satellite and want to know if there's any hope for more HD channels.
edwarto 02-26-08, 11:02 AM I just got a letter from Time warner telling me that my area is going to be upgraded to fibre optics. It said there would be some outages but they said they would try to do them at 1 am and they could last for a few minutes or a few hours?
whats does this mean ? I know fountain Valley has a few areas of Fios are they competing?
e_e_emarpea 02-26-08, 12:12 PM does anyone have the newer motorola box in the old adelphia areas?

I had the "new" Moto box before I went D*. It was fine, exactly like the previouse one was, just all silvery and black.

D*= DirecTV
OK I did another scan tonight, that is Wednesday night and the total went from 424 to 419. So another 5 digital channels have been dropped. Plus people reporting their STBs are getting out of synch.
Something is definitely up. I wonder what it is.
Rudy
OK I thought I'd post the last installment of this, at least for now. :) Last week the total number of digital channels bottomed out at 417 and has been rising back up, about 1 channel at a time. Yesterday we were at 419.

Interesting and confusing. Huntington Beach and Orange went fiber (most part, not to the house) 7-8 years ago. I thought parts of Garden Grove were last about 3 or so years ago. I thought Cable Internet would start in areas once they went fiber (been years now). Keep us posted if you get any more info. Dan

I've had 4 6416 IIIs for a little over a year now and have had only 1 problem that I solved myself by reformatting. I've used the firewire output on all 4 to archive stuff on my computer. All in all, I'm happy with the box. I'm just not happy with TWC not offering more HD channels in my area. :(

Adelmoxi 03-03-08, 12:43 AM TO ALL MOTOROLA STB HOLDERS:I have read (specifcaally on DSL reports) that TWC is starting to use a system overlay (meaning we may use Scientific Atlanta boxes). How many of you will be willing to try one?

I'm quite satisfied with the 3416, and the way it works (elegant or not, Tivo or not, wishlist for features or not). I've been a Moto user ever since Nov 2004 when I got one of the first 6412-II DVRs in the LA area, and have been used to the Moto interface (and its "quirks") for years. No complaints that cannot be circumvented, worked around, or simply "lived with".
But the real reason I'd never leave for SA boxes is that I MUST have a working firewire port for archiving to D-VHS. The absence of such functionality is a complete deal-breaker for me when considering any other alternative hardware or content provider (including D* and E*) for HD. To the best of my knowledge, no SA DVR has a working firewire port.
kmattoo 03-04-08, 05:33 PM I'm getting pretty close to moving to D*. They reduced their price on the HD DVR and have a better selection of HD, plus Sunday Ticket.
I'll probably keep the cable modem, but need to figure out if a diplexer would work through a splitter....

I spent a few days at my friend's house helping him setup his new home theater, and his new DirecTV DVR gets an amazing amount of HD channels. I really, really want CNN HD, Fox Business HD, and Discovery HD, and if it weren't for how awful the DirecTV box is (I use a TiVo Series 3), I would be leaving TWC for them.
Adelmoxi 03-07-08, 12:56 PM lets all move into Cox territory and stop waiting for Time Warner's HD deployment.
jsessler 03-07-08, 10:52 PM I've been speaking with Fred Stefany, Time Warner President of Orange, San
Bernardino, Riverside counties here in California. He let me know that they recently completed upgrades in Fontana/Ontario hub, and he anticipates they'll be adding about 20 more HD channels in the May time frame including Discovery, National Geographic,
Travel, Food, CNN, etc.
I specifically asked about SDV (I own TiVos), and he responded saying that the HD channels are not likely to be switched.
Sounds promising. Also, there is work going on in the city of Upland too, so they may also get the new HD in May.

jgmiller 03-10-08, 12:16 AM I've really resisted going with DTV because frankly I can't stand their business practices and that horrible 2 year contract they make you sign. I classify them in the same league as wireless carriers. However I just checked and for the same equipment quantities I currently have I'd save about $50 a month with them over TWC. Of course that's offset by the upfront equipment costs but after about 10 months I'd be at a break even point. They're making it very tempting to leave and they obviously have a lot more HD programming.
If I were to keep just Road Runner would TWC make me also have basic cable or could I just have the HSI?
CaCHooKa Man 03-10-08, 03:56 AM i dont seem to get my13 with my clear QAM tuner. every other local HD channel is fine though. maybe when i upgrade my 32" vizio to a 32" sharp aquos in a week ill get the channel.
jonathank 03-10-08, 08:04 AM You can get Roadrunner without ordering cable TV service. For them to do otherwise would probably be illegal tying under the antitrust laws.

AFAIK, TW don't have an internet-only "penalty" (at least, it's not on their published list of "a la carte" prices). I'm going round there today to hand in my equipment (I'm going internet-only plus Broadcast - went over to DirecTV), I'll see what the situation is.

To my knowledge, they don't carry it anywhere in this area. When/if they add it, I'd presume they would do it on a region-wide basis like they did with 5, 9 and KOCE in the recent past.
jvadnais 03-11-08, 09:35 PM I sort of feel like after reading all of this and comparing my current TWC offering to DirecTV, it might be time for me to switch. I have made a bit of a pro/con list. I'm hoping you all might be able to tell me if I'm missing anything that might make me regret switching.
PROs of switching to D*:
- cheaper overall cost
- MANY more HD channels
- online DVR programing!
- better STB interface
CONs of switching to D*:
- have to get a phone line
- satellite on rooftop (already approved with landlord)
- yearly contract
- no more bundled service (I think my internet stays the same with TWC)
To me, the pros are outweighing the cons, especially in the land of HD. I can't stand how slowly TWC is rolling out HD... even D*'s website it nicer.
Is there something I'm missing? I might get the phone line and bite the bullet later this week.
Thanks,
Jordan

Hey Jordan welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have pros and cons pretty well covered. One thing I seem to remember is that both D* and E* used to offer a small ($5 a month) discount for bundling them with a DSL service. To compete with cable's bundle pricing.
So when you call you may want to ask about that, and research DSL pricing in your area.
Good Luck.

I've just made the jump so let me try to answer your questions:
PROs of switching to D*:
- cheaper overall cost Correct - there is a AAA discount also available to new customers, but you have to call a special number for it.
- MANY more HD channels Definitely.
- online DVR programing! Haven't tried it yet, but seems to work well from what I read.
- better STB interface Very impressed so far. TW's interface was very slow/erratic.
CONs of switching to D*:
- have to get a phone line It's NOT a requirement. If you don't have one, you can't order PPVs via the handset.
- satellite on rooftop (already approved with landlord)
- yearly contract Initial is two years.
- no more bundled service (I think my internet stays the same with TWC) I kept my internet with TW, there is no penalty for "unbundling". I believe Comcast have a $15 surcharge for internet-only customers.
jvadnais 03-12-08, 11:06 AM Thank you Rudy and Mad Mac for the great feedback. I think I've made up my mind.
I will need to get a phone line because I really want the MLB Extra Innings package. I can't believe that they don't offer some sort of wifi option (like TiVo) in lieu of the phone line.
Now my only concern is the headache of scheduling an appointment and getting my landlord to cooperate with getting them onto the roof to install the dish. Does anyone here know if they perform installs on Saturday or Sunday?
Thanks again,
Jordan

When you say that you'll need to order a phone line, does that mean you don't have one now? You rely on your cell phone exclusively? Just wanted to make sure.
I'm not sure about MLB Extra Innings, but I remember ordering ESPN GamePlan over the phone, so when you call D* maybe you can ask them about that.

The installer will work with you, don't worry. When I had satellite service at my current apartment the installer had setup the dish on a tripod right on the patio in front of my apartment. So there wasn't even a need to climb onto the roof. Just something else to consider.

And +$0.50 for rent of box+remote AND +$1 for an HD receiver (always has been same price as non-HD). Great! More $ for very little (no added HD recently or planned, no larger hard drive in DVRs). Time to get the poison pen out again after a couple years....
Dan
Mad Mac 03-13-08, 11:48 PM A little more on the D* phone issue, summarised from their T&Cs with my comments in RED:
If they "detect" that a receiver is not regularly connected to a landline, they *may* investigate to determine that the receiver is located where you say it is (i.e. not in another region). Doubt if this would actually ever happen unless someone reported blacked-out games being shown or something like that.
PPVs - They may charge up to $1.50 for automated ordering over the phone or up to $5 via a live person. You can order online for free.
dylan24 03-14-08, 12:20 PM A bit OT, but was anyone else having problems with internet access all day and night yesterday? It seems to be ok now this morning. I'm in Los Feliz; Eagle Rock head end.
danki6x 03-14-08, 04:45 PM Taking your points in order....
1) I don't remember "Digital Basic" being cheaper than "Basic Cable" , but it would actually be more expensive if you take box/remote rental into account.
I see in the new pricing that Digital w/1 tier will be $47.95 while Basic Cable will be $54.00. I think they are going to pressure those that haven't to change. Hopefully will lead to more HD space soon in this area.

If I am not mistaken, do you have Directv and TW Roadrunner Cable Internet at the same time?
I currently have Dishnetwork TV and AT&T DSL Internet service. My problem is I live in
an area where Upgrade to faster DSL is not available. I tried to get Roadrunner Internet
service, but was not possible.
According to Roadrunner installation guy, Dishnetwork is occupying cable to feed TV,and
Roadrunner or TW Cable uses same cableline to feed their cable and internet service.
Only other way to do it is by installing a new cableline from outside and possibly drill holes on the wall to bring it in.
I am satisfied with Dishnetwork, especially due to much better HD channel lineup than
TW. My question to Dishnetwork and Dirctv users: Is it possible to have Satellite TV
and Cable Internet from Roadrunner at the same time?

Certainly is, that's exactly what I (and at least one other regular poster on here) have right now. It sounds like when you had Dish installed, they used the existing cabling into your home. Without knowing your particular layout, I can't speculate further on why it's a problem for TW to get another line into your home. Are you in an apartment or condo?

I really want faster internet and still keep my Dishnetwork. I really hope there is some

Mad Mac,
I think you are correct regarding Dishnetwork used existing cabling to feed TV. It seems
like TW wants to use the existing cabling for internet connection and have Dishnetwork
do a separate line for TV?
I wish there was an easier solution rather than having to have both Dishnetwork and
TW guys come out just to upgrade for internet connection. Also, I am not sure if Dishnetwork will do a new line installation without charging me.

I had cable coming in, then going to the attic and distributed to most of the house from there. When D* came, I got them to bring the cables from the dish in to where my main cable tv distribution point was. Simple matter of swapping some wires.

A couple of thoughts for your particular situation:
1. What do you think about Dish Network HD only tier for $29.99?
2. Have you called DirecTV and told them that you are active duty to see if there is a special provision or exception for folks like you? There really ought to be in MHO.

SmartMuffin 03-16-08, 04:52 PM As if I wasn't already irritated enough with TWC... now I'm having choppiness issues with many HD channels. Here's the thread in detail.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1008280
Has anyone else been experiencing this?
What HD channels there are on TW are real HD. They do not re encode the off the air signals as does D*. Do a little research on what the differences in quality are. If it is quantity you are looking for, D* is proably the way to go. If you want the best quality, then stick with cable.
Today (3/20) thru Sunday is supposed to be a free preview of HBO and Cinemax on TWC (at least in my area of Orange County). The problem is, HBOHD is still blocked, while all the other channels are up, even CinemaxHD. I called TWC, and they offered to send a tech out to see if there was a problem with my cable box, which makes no sense since the problem is on their end.
Is anyone else having a problem with this?
petey1287 03-21-08, 06:17 AM Same here Kebis, HBOHD is blocked. I dont pay for any premium channels though.
Adelmoxi 03-21-08, 04:27 PM I am thinking about leaving TWC for Dish Network and Verizon (home phone & DSL: 768kbps.). Will I face any penalties getting out couple day before my billing cycle ends (27 of this month?
slickshoes 03-21-08, 04:28 PM Nope, there are no contracts with Cable..

Which is one reason why I haven't switched to D* yet. The quantity isn't all that important to me. After all I have hundreds of channels on cable and my guess is that even if all of them were HD I still wouldn't watch them. I'd rather have high quality on the ones I do watch. I also hate D*'s whole business model of locking in customers for years, that's just sleazy.
The one thing that has got me thinking about moving to D* is the price. With TWC latest increase they will now be about $60 a month more for the same equipment than D* would be. That's not an insignificant amount.
annonemoose 03-22-08, 04:45 PM Hi;
Is everyone else getting HD On Demand? I've been seeing the advertising non-stop for almost a year now and we don't get it. We are subscribed to everything, (except sports), and have Digital and get the 26 HD Chanels that are offered. Like HBO HD, SHO HD etc.....
But we were first told that November 19th, 2007 we'd have HD On Demand and then told to wait until March 19th 2008. Which didn't materialize.
We can't seem to get a straight answer out of Time Warner and no one seems to know. They've sent a tech out and we've reset our box almost daily. So is anyone out here getting HD On Demand movies?
Thanks,
Jo

Are you talking about channel 431 HDPPV or are you talking about the HD OnDemand Movies found under Channel 1, OnDemand, Movies, "HD Movies & Events"?
I don't really care about 431 since it only shows events priced from $50 and up. But on channel 1 there are lot's of HD OnDemand movies. prices at $4.99. The only complaint I have is that they cut letterbox movies down to 16:9.
annonemoose 03-22-08, 08:52 PM .....snip......

Nope not 431 I don't care about that either. It's the on demand. I have NO, none, zero movies in HD on Demand and all Time Warner does it stall... First they try to troubleshoot then they come up with an oh you were an adelphia customer you don't have it yet. But I was NEVER an Adelphia Customer!
Thanks..... you told me what I wondered,
Jo
I don't have any HD on Demand yet. However, it appears they are at least testing it out because a couple times I've seen HD material pop up only to disappear the next time I checked On Demand.

TWC, Comcast cry foul on Verizon
By Paul Davidson, USA TODAY
The battle between phone and cable companies is getting uglier.
Three cable giants are accusing Verizon (VZ) of illegally using proprietary information it obtains as a wholesale telecom provider to retain customers who had planned to switch to the cable providers for their phone service.
Since last June, Verizon has deployed the tactic to hold on to "thousands" of subscribers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, as well as parts of the Midwest, South, Texas and California, allege Comcast (CMCSA), Time Warner (TWX) and Bright House. In a recent Federal Communications Commission filing, the companies asked the agency to crack down on the practice.
Verizon says that it's doing nothing illegal and that its marketing is good for consumers.
Phone and cable companies are battling to serve customers with bundles of voice, TV and broadband services. Cable companies have signed up about 14 million phone customers, luring most with Voice over Internet Protocol services, research firm In-Stat says. Verizon lost 1.6 million phone lines in the second half of 2007. Meanwhile, Verizon has signed up about 1 million subscribers for its FiOS video service.
The dispute stems from Verizon's control of the phone network. A cable company that wrests a phone customer from Verizon must contact the telecom company to transfer the customer's phone number. Most customers want to keep their phone numbers when they switch carriers.
Such number transfers can take several days. During that period, Verizon has illegally used information about the transfer to entice subscribers to stay by offering service discounts and gift cards of $50 to $200, the cable companies say.
The companies cite a federal law that prohibits a phone carrier that gets "proprietary information" from another carrier in order to provide phone service from using it "for its own marketing efforts." That information "is confidential between companies," says Comcast's Sena Fitzmaurice.
The cable companies argue Verizon can make its pitch only if the customer calls to cancel service. Otherwise, it must wait until after the service is switched over.
But Verizon says constraints on the use of proprietary information were not meant to apply to phone-number transfers. In those cases, it says, the cable company is acting on the customer's behalf — that's how Verizon is notified to cancel the service. If it can't respond and try to retain the customer, cable would have an unfair advantage, Verizon says. Why? A cable customer who switches to Verizon for TV must call to cancel cable service, giving the cable company a chance to try to keep its customer.
Verizon's David Fish says the cable companies are trying to "block consumer choice."
The cable giants say Verizon has the unfair edge because they don't get a chance to outdo the carrier's pitch with a better offer until after a customer has nixed its new service.

I've been getting HD Movies OnDemand for quite a while. I think its $4.99 per movie. And I'll say about 30 or more HD movies available. Also theres free HD content OnDemand like "HD Showcase" featuring Music Choice HD and Sundance Channel HD.
