Seems to do OK once the picture is in place. It's as if they're spreading out the I frames too far apart and they can't manage a full frame change fast enough at times.
Play a recording. If you're already playing a recording, pick a different recording. The sound usually comes back. Stupid bug that's been around for years that TW+Motorola can't or won't fix.

Yeah, same here. Had massive pixelation during U2 Rattle & Hum concert on 414. I think they have channel specific bandwidth allocation. I woke up on the couch the other night and Entertainment Tonight was on. It looked stunning... clearest HD I've ever seen.
CaCHooKa Man 11-07-08, 05:48 AM TWCs been really hit or miss since i upgraded to digital cable a couple months ago. at times, the PQ is really gorgeous and other times the pixellation is sickening.

Same here. And the problems didn't start until they added all the new channels. They have serious bandwidth issues. It's too bad,TWC Orange County "used to" look better than D*. I am in the process of trying to switch to Verizon FIOS, but it looks like it may be a no go at my apartment complex :( A shame really, I would have gotten more HD channels, better PQ,and faster internet for a CHEAPER price!
CaCHooKa Man 11-09-08, 03:40 AM im watching national geographic right now and this is happening every minute or so

Yesterday I went to Verizon's site and looked up Fios. It's now available in my area! I made an appointment for this Tuesday to get the full channel lineup. Waaay more HD and the DVR software appears to be much more sophisticated. I'm tired of Time-Warner and their terrible software and horrible picture quality and that annoying ad banner in the guide.
jonathank 11-10-08, 06:10 AM Do we know when/if FIOS will come to Hollywood/West LA? I'm not a very satisfied TWC customer either, and I can't use a dish.

The Business of Television
MGM HD Ink’s Carriage Pact With AT&T’s U-verse
Deal Gives HD Movie Channel Another Key Distribution Partner
By Linda Moss, Multichannel News - November 10, 2008
MGM HD is marking its first anniversary by landing a carriage deal with AT&T’s U-verse service, and by picking up distribution on cable systems that have been carrying Mojo HD, which is going dark next month.
“The bandwidth became available and we went out there and basically raised our hands and said, ‘Take us,’” said Doug Lee, executive vice president of worldwide digital media for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios. “We’ve got big movies on our service. It looked like a good HD replacement.”
With its new AT&T pact, MGM HD now has affiliation deals with all the major distributors, namely DirecTV, Dish Network, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Verizon and Bright House Networks, according to Lee.
Starting Monday, U-verse TV will offer MGM HD, which launched Oct. 10 last year, as part of the service’s HD premium package, a new tier that can be added to an HD subscription for an additional $5 a month. AT&T U-verse TV HD service is available for $10 a month with any U-verse programming package.
“It’s another nationwide distributor for us,” Lee said of MGM HD’s new U-verse agreement. “It’s a nationwide deal. As they grow, we’re going to be on an HD tier with them. So it’s not their full sub base.”
The AT&T deal follows on the heels of Verizon starting its rollout last month of MGM HD, which offers a library of classic and contemporary films in HD, 1080i.
Last month, AT&T announced that it was bolstering its HD basic offering, adding 30 new HD networks, taking it to more than 75 channels.
In addition to its new AT&T affiliation deal, MGM HD is seizing the opportunity presented by the demise of Mojo HD, the male-targeted service that is being shut down in December by In Demand Networks, which is owned by Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Cox Communications.
When MGM HD heard that Mojo was going to be shut down, its affiliate sales force approached Time Warner systems about getting the soon-to-be-defunct network’s slot, according to Lee. He expects MGM HD to pick up close to 1 million of Mojo HD’s former homes.
“A lot of Time Warner systems have the bandwidth to accommodate an earlier launch for us now,” Lee said. “In a lot of systems that were probably going to launch us next year, almost all those launches moved up to fourth quarter this year.”
Lee declined to comment on how many total subscribers MGM HD has now, but he claimed that the network is at twice its original projections. He’s also hopeful that Time Warner will launch MGM HD in New York City and Los Angeles by the end of the year.
MGM HD is still talking to cable operators it doesn’t have deals with, such as Cox Communications, Charter Communications, Cablevision Systems and the National Cable Television Cooperative, according to Lee.
This year is the first CTAM conference that MGM HD is participating in, and it was set to co-host a screening of the new James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, this past Sunday in Boston.
MGM is partners with Viacom’s Paramount Pictures and Lionsgate in a new premium network set to launch next fall. MGM and the joint venture partners, Studio 3 Partners, were co-sponsoring the Bond movie sneak peak at CTAM.

barrnet 11-10-08, 02:28 PM All of sudden the music channels have disappeard from both our HD/DVR Moto boxes. When I picked up a new one the CSR said those channels are on the lowest frequency of the cable and if the connection is loose they drop out. Of course, that is not the problem or the solution, I have tried re-booting. Just wondering if anybody else has had this happen and how it was resolved.
Thanks for any help.

I'm not a very satisfied TWC customer either, and I can't use a dish.If your local telephone provider is AT&T then you'll probably never get FIOS in your area. That's what Verizon told me when i inquired a few months ago (i'm AT&T).

I see the same issues. Frequent break up at transisions. Picture is softer than it used to be. KCBS, KTLA, KNBC, KABC, KTTV, KCOP, KCET seem to be the big losers. They appear to have been robbed of bitrate the most. I guess the days of cable claiming superior HD are over. I'm thinking investing the $100 a month on a good antenna and dumping cable at this point. It will only get worse. Hopefully, AT&T will come to my area soon.
markt170 11-11-08, 02:19 PM Constant pixilation on every channel the last few days in Encino. I called TWC and got a credit for one week off my bill. They're also sending out a tech on Saturday, but of course, I know he won't be able to do anything. Everyone with this problem should call and request a credit to the bill. That may hurt TWC's bottom line enough that they may actually do something to solve the problem.

Hopefully this compression is a bandaid until they get SDV rolled out consistently across LA.
Jeffrey47 11-11-08, 06:45 PM Same thing out in Newbury Park. Pictures across the HD spectrum are getting worse every day. Fortunately, Verizon is starting to dig up our street for FiOS.

Whatever cheesy processor they are using to cut down the bitrates does a really bad job. I watch TV to relax not to be irritated and this is irritating!

Running two TiVo Series 3 boxes here in Eagle Rock area, and neither one has had the (900's) music channels for more than a month. I finally called them today, and they re-authorized the cable cards, but no go. They wanted to send out a tech, but I told them that it took so long to get the cable cards authorized and working, I didn't want to start messing with things now.
But it's damned annoying. And it sounds almost like they've turned them off for DVRs, like there's some royalty or copyright issue or something.
Would sure like to hear from anyone who does not have a DVR whether the 900's music channels are working for them.

Here in Los Feliz (Eagle Rock), they've been in and out. Didn't have them for a while, checked a couple of days ago and they were back, just checked now and they're out, with the "Just a moment...this channel should be available shortly" message.
No DVR, just a Moto 6200 STB.
No idea when they came live, but I have Food HD, CNN HD, History HD, Discovery HD, and NGC HD, HGTV HD, TLC HD, ABC Family HD, and A&E HD here in Fullerton (near CSUF).
CaCHooKa Man 11-12-08, 11:21 PM the music channels work fine for me. i dunno if theyve been working the past few days since i only stick to the HD channels though. im in the eagle rock coverage area btw.
jsyoung 11-13-08, 01:51 PM Good God, things are sucking in the East San Fernando Valley.
Looks like Time-Warner is having issues with the OTA rebroadcasts.
The OTA HD rebroadcast signals appear to have lost anywhere from 5 to 15 signal points while the analog rebroadcasts of 2-13 look like crap.
It's not a signal strength issue because the cable only channels come in fine. The digital channels have 100% signal strength.
humdinger70 11-13-08, 07:22 PM Has anyone in your area with a legacy SA8300HD DVR been upgraded to the newest version of Navigator MDN (2.4.4-14)?

RandyWalters 11-14-08, 11:45 PM It does not matter if all of El Segundo is wired with Fiber Optic because this is a city wide problem and the compression appears at many different head ends and TWC would not have resources to NOT do recompression for one small city. That would be a huge technological undertaking for TWC.
If you have the ability to record OTA & cable on a computer or on a DVR where you can see the filesizes(Like the LG 3410A),just make a 1hr recording of the same channel OTA & from TW cable and you will see that the cable file size is much smaller thus proving the presence of recompression.OK i recently made a few simultaneous recordings of a few news broadcasts via OTA and Cable and checked the filesizes on my Tivo's Now Playing List over my networked PC. The programs started and stopped at the exact same times. The ABC broadcast had a larger file size OTA but CBS had a larger file size over cable. I also sat and watched these broadcasts while they were recording and kept switching between OTA on the TV's built-in tuner, and also OTA and Cable on my Tivo's two tuners. All three sources were virtually indistinguishable from one another and looked great. The file sizes are so close and the image so identical that the cable versions can't possibly be compressed the way you say they're being compressed. I'm going to record more 30 minute broadcasts on FOX and NBC next as well as some prime time sitcoms but this is what i found so far....
11/12/08: ABC World News on Ch 7.1 is 3.20GB, and on cable 407 it's 3.14GB.
11/14/08: CBS World News on Ch 2.1 is 3.39GB, and on cable 402 it's 3.44GB.
11/14/08: FOX News 30 min Ch 11.1 is 3.52GB, and on cable 411 it's 3.34GB.

Consider yourself lucky. TWC Orange County PQ is very mediocre. I just had a TV delivered for my brother today(52XBR6), I hooked it up at my place and messed with it for an hour on TWC, I then delivered it to his house with my truck and connected it to his D*. The D* looked MUCH better.

Well,it seems that El Segundo is a truly unique oasis in the otherwise dry desert known as the greater Los Angeles area.As you can clearly see from numerous other members and their posted screencaps on the last couple of pages in this thread the problem exist everywhere else from Ventura to Los Angeles and all the way down to Orange county. So as hobbs47 said, consider yourself extremely lucky.

You're lucky at your location. In the Santa Moncia area the quality has taken a nose dive. I compared my HD off air antenna to the cable today and the difference is large. Watching the college games on ABC and I was able to compare the 2 pictures. The cable version lags the off air by a few seconds, so it was easy to watch live and then see the Time Warner cable version. It was enlightening. Off of cable things went in and out of focus, frames sometimes pixelized, the grass had no definition. Don't blame the camera guy for those out of focus shots anymore.
My guess is they will get to the El Segundo system. It's a matter of time.
How do you see the used bit rates on your Tivo. Haven't found that on mine.
Do you see ABC in 720p or 1080i in your area?
kenwebb 11-16-08, 02:36 AM Fullerton finally got all the new HD channels I have to say after watching them for few days I'm very disappointed in picture quality as well as fact that 90% are still showing 4:3 format what good is 1080i if all programs on HD channels are in 4:3
CaCHooKa Man 11-16-08, 10:43 PM i just recorded a couple minutes of SNF from OTA and through firewire with TWC and the file sizes arent that different. but you can definitely tell the difference in the picture quality. OTA is sharper and the colors are a little more vibrant.

aleywwu 11-17-08, 02:15 PM so, i'm in South Pasadena and have been with TWC for about 3 months now (ever since relocating down here from Seattle). I have to say i'm pretty disappointed with their HD channel selection, especially for the price. I haven't experienced any of the horrible PQ issues some of you have, but I did notice that South Pas/Pasadena aren't included in the list of cities expected to get new HD channels in the future.
So, is there any reason I shouldn't switch to AT&T U-verse? On their U200 plan, with HBO added, I'm only looking at about $10 more per month for about 30 more HD channels, plus $200 cash back right now. The U300 plan isn't much more expensive, and adds a few more HD channels, including Showtime. Has anybody had any experiences with AT&T that I should know about before switching over? Any information or advice that anybody can offer would be appreciated.
slickshoes 11-17-08, 02:48 PM The biggest drawback for Uverse is that you only get two HD streams per house, period. So if you are recording two HD items on the DVR, you can't even watch something else in HD on the other TV.
And with TWC, you get two HD streams per TV.

The PIP is trapped in the 4:3 screen. It will not go outside into the 16:9 'extended' area. This is unchangable until the boxes can support it. Your guide and station ID, etc. are also limited. Yes, we all want both in the full width but I think I read the current version on boxes cannot support these things outside the 4:3 box and we will need to wait for the next revision of cable boxes (not just software change) /Dan

tracerit 11-18-08, 12:20 AM Just ran into a problem. I'm recording Heroes and the Clippers game right now but when I turned the TV on to watch the Clippers game, it won't let me. It says I have to cancel one or don't change the channels. Well I thought I could record Heroes and Clippers, and watch the Clippers at the same time...
Then I started watching Heroes, and it says that my TV does not support HDCP, which it does. Suggests that I use the YPrPb type connections which I don't have. It's connected yb HDMI right now and has been for the last two weeks with no problem. Now I can't change channels or view Guide or anything at all. It's stuck on channel 402...
Ok, it's working now but all my channels are "jumping" it's twitching up and down on all channels, to see if it was my TV or cable, I outputed my PC desktop and it's perfectly fine, looks like it's with the cable... so many problems tonight!

chuckie59 11-18-08, 01:40 PM No idea when they came live, but I have Food HD, CNN HD, History HD, Discovery HD, and NGC HD, HGTV HD, TLC HD, ABC Family HD, and A&E HD here in Fullerton (near CSUF).
WooHoo!! Upland as well...:D
danki6x 11-18-08, 05:25 PM On my SA8300 boxes I can move the PIP...I am running Passport...on the right hand side of the PIP on the remote control is a button that says move...it moves my PIP to all four corners...maybe it is different on Navigator...Correct, but not moved into the extended 16:9 area of the screen. The original question was that they would like to put the PIP at the edge of the screen when in 16:9 (not stretched) mode such as an HD channel. The PIP though ends up in the 4:3 area a distance from the edges and blocks some main viewing area. Will be nice when machines are available that let PIP and guide use the whole screen area. Sidenote: I would like to be able to switch sound only between PIP/main without having to swap someday. /Dan
llabine1 11-18-08, 05:50 PM Just ran into a problem.
Ok, it's working now but all my channels are "jumping" it's twitching up and down on all channels, to see if it was my TV or cable, I outputed my PC desktop and it's perfectly fine, looks like it's with the cable... so many problems tonight!
you can record two things and watch a third if it is a recording...you can also watch a third thing if you have an input set to OTA...that is a cable coax going directly into an antenna input frome the wall that you scan channels into....you will have all the main channels NBC..ABC...CBS...Fox...etc on this setting in HD...
You got the error message about YPrPb because you interrupted the handshake between your HDMI connection on your cable box and the tv...the simple solution to this is to turn everything off then turn on the cable box first then the tv...it resets the HDMI ....if you want to watch a 3rd thing after that you just go to the Input...Antenna (or whatever you have named your OTA connection)...then use the tv remote to put in your station that you want to watch...make sure you have scanned them in...once should do it...good luck....you did not break anything :)

Time Warner Cable sent a message this morning reminding me that it, too, offers call forwarding to victims of the latest Orange County fires (See Verizon and AT&T’s similar service). The feature, which forwards calls to the home phone to a cell phone or another number, is already included with the Time Warner phone service.
If a customer never set this up, Time Warner will do it for you. Affected customers can call 888-TWCable to have a cable representative set up the service.
Time Warner will also put billing on hold for fire victims. Fred Stefany, president of O.C.’s Time Warner operation, said that this is typical procedure during a disaster since the cable bill is the last thing a customer whose house burned down wants to think about.
Stefany also asked me for a list of houses that were affected, which we publish HERE. To prevent post-fire frustration, Time Warner is also proactively wiping out the data on the cable boxes in those homes. The average customer has two cable boxes — or about $500 worth of equipment. If Time Warner didn’t erase the data, the customer would be charged for the unreturned box.
“So we want to do this up front so we don’t harass them in six months when the fires are not as fresh in our mind,” Stefany said.
“We, of course, would like to get insurance re-imbursement if possible as we have to be fiscally responsible, but where we see the home is a total loss, we try to be understanding,” he added.
For those wondering, the fires have not affected customers in Cox Communications territory.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, Vs/Golf HD, currently carried on channel 423 in some areas, will cease operations on December 8, 2008. To ensure no interruption to our customers, Versus HD and Golf HD will be launched on channel 469 and 423 respectively, on or before December 8, 2008.

its becoming two separate channels
alaindelon 11-19-08, 03:04 AM No new HD channels in Hollywood Hills so far.
DSperber 11-19-08, 03:17 PM I've been advised that the 24 new HD channels are arriving in my area (MDR, former Comcast) by tomorrow morning (Thursday 11/20).
danki6x 11-19-08, 05:17 PM huh? so the channel is getting canceled, or just moving? im confused, sorry. As someone said they are actually becoming two separate channels. For the most part, during the day it was Golf Channel HD and evening Versus HD. They are owned by the same people and combine to one channel in many places to save space. Now we will get 24 hours of each, instead of part time of each. /Dan
CaCHooKa Man 11-19-08, 10:50 PM PQ has been surprisingly good the past couple days compared to how it usually is

By Linda Haugsted -- Multichannel News, 11/19/2008 9:49:00 AM

DSperber 11-20-08, 06:22 PM Just in passing...
The new HD channels did arrive late last night.
However missing from the announced group was NBATV HD (470), Tennis Channel HD (473), and Hallmark Movie Channel HD (476). Don't know why they're not delivered yet.
Also, for some reason Lifetime Movie Channel HD (475) is coming to me although I thought this was going to be part of Variety Tier (which I don't subscribe to). The other new Variety Tier HD channels are showing up as "not authorized" when I try to tune to them, as they should (since I don't get Variety Tier... hence why I don't get Science Channel HD, the only channel in the entire group I really cared about).
Other than the East Coast feeds of HBOHD and SHOHD which I am entitled to, the only non-free new HD channel I now actually receive is BIO HD (on Choice Tier, which I recently subscribed to so that I could get NGC HD). I never watched BIO SD on D* (which I also have), so I don't really care much. However I did check it out, and it's apparently another "stretch-o-vision" version of HD like TNTHD and TBSHD, etc.,... for the mindless who apparently can't tell that they're not actually looking at HD when they see a 16x9 screen filled! NOTE: not the fault of TWC, but depressing nevertheless.
CaCHooKa Man 11-20-08, 06:26 PM im guessing that since eagle rock isnt listed that it means theyll be added sometime next year. knowing TWC then thatd mean maybe by 2010. :(
i guess ill have to be happy with the channels that will be available in all areas. the only channel i really wanted from the other list was ESPNU anyway.

LOL, I deleted my message because TNT came back right after I posted (sort of, there's still a lot of breakup). FSN-HD also is back, but I'm seeing more and more problems with certain stations lately (ESPN-HD for one). Don't know if it just me or something in my area.
Thanks for getting back to the phantom message. :D
EDIT: Turn out it was just a loose cable to my STB. So glad I checked before calling TWC for a service call and going through that BS.
sidebar, kinda
i am on the regular cable internet speed...just started playing around with streaming netflix hd content through my xbox 360....and my standard speed gives me 1 signal bar, which is the worst signal possible. this right? anyone else do any testing?

petey1287 11-22-08, 02:51 PM TWC updated the HD section on the So Cal website. You can check to see when the new HD channels (Travel Channel HD, FX HD, Animal Planet HD, etc.) will be ready in your area.

Looks like I will be getting the 2 groups of new HD channels next month (probably in 2-3 weeks). Actually it will be 13 HD channels I will be receiving out of 24 HD channels, Im not subscribed to those other tiers and premiums.
CaCHooKa Man 11-22-08, 06:35 PM looks like i wont be getting the second group of channels anytime soon since i dont think eagle rock has SDV
I'm in 90064 and the second group of channels started showing up on my HD Tivo today. They are simply listed as "HD-XX" and there is no programming listing but they are there.
I know you can't please all of the people all of the time but I sure wish they would add CNBCHD.
He's been in Burbank on Dish HD and bought a home in Sunland they're in process of moving into. Just found out he has no option for phone line hi speed internet so his only options are pay like $76 a month for hook up through dish instead of in the $40s or go to Time Warner Cable.
He asked me if I had heard anything about TW's service and I've never looked. But I have Charter HD with large revealing displays and am very happy with it. Is Time Warner in the same ballpark with HD and overall picture quality and service as Charter? Would really appreciate a couple quick observations from anyone familiar with both in L.A. area.
Thanks much
When, if ever, is Navigator software going to replace what is currently used on TWC's STBs? I read when SDV is turned on, but I'm happy with what is already there (Moto 6416 Phase III). Navigator has a bad reputation, but that can be due to a learning curve.
OK, so they have Tujunga/Valencia on the December list. Does that mean we're getting SDV? If they add SDV does that mean they will return to using full quality HD streams while they're at it? They need to do something, the quality is really really bad.
Is Time Warner in the same ballpark with HD and overall picture quality and service as Charter? Would really appreciate a couple quick observations from anyone familiar with both in L.A. area.I'm pretty sure Burbank is in the same boat with Valencia and Tujunga - you're former Comcast/ATTBB/MediaOne with full analog cable. In our area, the HD PQ was pristine until TW added the 11 new HD channels. If you go back a few pages you can see some screenshots.
Instead of implementing SDV, it looks like they reduced the quality of each channel to fit more in. SDV is definitely NOT in effect here - our CableCard TiVo still picks up all the channels. The result is catastrophic to the picture. It may be different in other areas where they have SDV, or some of the other former Comcast areas where expanded basic cable is all digital. I'm hoping they plan to implement a more scalable solution for the Decmeber channel additions.

What is SDV?
RandyWalters 11-23-08, 01:12 PM What is SDV?Switched Digital Video. Search AVS and TCF and you'll find tons of discussion about it.

Thanks for that information. I saw the pictures and it's not pretty. Will pass that on to my son and tell him go get someone at TW on the phone who sounds like they know what they're talking about....and press them about this reported issue and see what they say.
Do they have the bandwidth or (whatever the issue is) capability NOW to get back to the less compressed hi quality signals with all the new and planned HD channels added, if they chose to......like from public pressure? Or does this crappier quality seem like it's going to be the case for quite awhile going forward due to what it would take money wise to fix it with more satellites or ??
Mad Mac 11-24-08, 06:53 PM Basic summary is:
1) TW is under pressure to match the HD lineups of their competitors (Satellite/FIOS/uVerse).
2) While they may trumpet their "fiber optic delivery", fact is that it's still an RF coaxial cable that delivers the signal to the home.
3) Any "pipe" is only as good as its narrowest point (see 2 above).
4) A significant amount of bandwidth is consumed by delivery of analogue service ("Basic Cable"), removal of which at this time could cause significant uproar/potential customer defections.
5) TW has endeavoured to address the situation by compressing HD service to make room for an expanded lineup.
6) SDV (Switched Digital Video) allows cable companies to make larger numbers of channels available by only sending them as and when requested rather than sending everything all the time, and should allow for less compressed feeds, thus improved picture quality.
7) Problem with 6 is that "cablecards" don't work with SDV. however, relatively few customers use that technology, and TW will issue free "translator" boxes to those affected.
hdtvfan2005 11-24-08, 07:01 PM Only Tivo Series3, HD, and HD XL boxes can use the Tuning resolver. It doesn't work with any Cable Card enabled set.

TWC was working with a company to port navigator to Moto boxes but that project is delayed indefinitely for now. Maybe in the next year or two they will consider. TWC is also looking at deploying a new Samsung HD-DVR with MoCA, Multi Room, and MPEG-4 capabilities. This Samsung DVR works with both Cisco and Moto networks due to it being an OCAP/tru2way device.
hdtvfan2005 11-24-08, 07:13 PM TWC may have signed another deal with OpenTV. OpenTV was going to offer a middleware solution that would allow Navigator to be run on Motorola boxes without cablecards. DCH boxes could run ODN aka OCAP Digital Navigator. OpenTV solution could allow a DCT box to run MDN aka Mystro Digital Navigator. OCAP is also known as tru2way. It all depends on how long they are going to keep iGuide. So it might happen eventually. The original deal was signed 2 years ago but it seemed to vanish. Like I said, it might actually happen.
Valuepac 11-25-08, 01:42 AM Im in downtown LA and we just got all the HD channels..
Few questions:
1. how can i tell if they have updated my headin to SDV
2. Any way to find out if the network (i think it use to be comcast) is 750 mhz, 860 mhz or 1 ghz
I noticed though i use to get National geographic, but now it seems to have been taken away.. because i dont have the tier

KCOP is 720p. All MNTV stations are 720p just like Fox.
CaCHooKa Man 11-26-08, 04:38 AM all my channels seem to have gone out. could this be because it started raining? i was watching conan through an OTA antenna then when i switched back to my cable box none of the channels were working.

Internet has just come back for me (in MDR). Telephone is still out. Cable TV was/is on throughout.
I was on hold (via cell phone) waiting for tech support (for telephone) for 30 minutes and never got a CSR. Finally gave up. I'm sure they're aware of the problem.
CaCHooKa Man 11-26-08, 05:34 AM channels are back now. channels 460-465 are missing from my guide now. maybe theyre adding the new channels for me soon?

jsyoung 11-26-08, 05:26 PM KCOP is 720p. All MNTV stations are 720p just like Fox.
Well, I had to be sure.
Especially since Time-Warner still insists on broadcasting KTTV in 1080i.
(KCET too for that matter)
hdtvfan2005 11-26-08, 11:10 PM I do know that Motorola HD boxes only have 1 HD resolution set at a time. Either 1080i or 720p. Can't have both at the same time.
jsyoung 11-27-08, 02:25 AM Except I'm talking about the raw QAM feed.
DSperber 11-27-08, 03:13 AM Midnight. Still no phone service. Internet and TV are fine.
Call my number from my cell phone and I get "due to network difficulties, your call cannot be completed at this time."
Remarkable. Can this really be affecting all TWC phone subscribers in the LA area? For nearly 24 hours, no phone service?
Unbelievable. It rained. Aren't their phone servers (at the other end of the same coax that provides Internet, presumably) indoors???
How long could it possibly take to fix something this major? Don't they have the staff? Competence? What in the world could take out some phone servers this deeply?
DSperber 11-27-08, 03:37 AM Ok. Finally decided to try a modem reset (for the fourth time today).
This time it worked. I now have my dial-tone back and all seems right once again. I suspect if I'd tried this a bit earlier it would have worked as well, as they've clearly fixed whatever the problem was.
Still no explanation for why "due to network difficulties..." was received when I called my number, suggesting a system-wide problem rather than an issue with my particular modem not being pingable. Regular phone service normally has either a rapid-busy, or it rings forever, or something like that, if there's line trouble with your number.
Also, the fact that I had working Internet service from the same modem is strange. Yes, the Internet lights were on and the phone lights were off, but that was even more reason for me to believe the problem was at the TWC end... not with my modem needing a reset.
Oh well. Case closed.
CaCHooKa Man 11-27-08, 04:11 AM i just got a 46" TV and it makes TWCs compression even more noticeable than on my 32"
bruce73 11-27-08, 07:36 AM I do know that Motorola HD boxes only have 1 HD resolution set at a time. Either 1080i or 720p. Can't have both at the same time.
Actually there is a way you can. My Moto6200 STB has live firewire ports which output each station's particular resolution (I have a firewire connection to my JVC D-VHS unit). Only trouble is, the guide or any other OSD isn't available. I rarely watch anything this way, but it good for comparisons, and there is less overscan.
CaCHooKa Man 11-27-08, 07:40 AM ^yea i use the firewire port on my motorola box to record to my PC. capdvhs shows you the native resolution that the channel is outputting and TWC constantly switches between 720p and 1080i on ABC, fox, fsn hd and espn.
DougDingle 11-27-08, 11:25 AM I have some episodes of ER saved from earlier this year on my TiVo S3, and a one hour episode up until May 2008 used between 6.9 and 7.2 gig of space on the hard drive.
With the new season starting in September, one hour episodes are now using between 4.7 and 5.0 gigs of space.
So the amount of compression has increased roughly 30%, and it shows.
But it's also the methodology. When they were just passing on the transport stream, whatever came in went out. But now that they're decompressing and recompressing the feeds, the hardware doing the work has to be top notch to minimize artifacting, and has to be set up properly by competent engineers. From the images I'm seeing, that is not happening. I suggest that currently TW is interested in quantity and not quality.
If things don't improve by the time I have a TiVo-based alternative, I'm gone.
sakaike 11-27-08, 12:43 PM FYI - A couple of days ago, several new HD stations showed up in the EPG on my Tivo HD running an m-card. I don't have the whole list with me, but they included TLC, Discovery, and NGC. All the new channels showed black, so I called TWC who just informed me that they're just populating the EPG, but the channels themselves won't be available until sometime after the new year - at least for me.
On a separate but related note, I'm in North Redondo Beach, and just received a door hanger last week announcing Fios TV is finally available in my neighborhood. I'll be making the switch ASAP, so I guess I'll never find out if and when those new stations show up.
hdtvfan2005 11-27-08, 03:02 PM TWC San Diego airs KSWB in 720p. KSWB is the San Diego Fox Affiliate. Our MNTV affiliate XHDTV has yet to brodacast in HD. They are in the process of becoming HD ready. It doesn't help that it's licensed in Tecate, BCN, MX.
CaCHooKa Man 11-27-08, 06:29 PM i sent an email to TWC asking if eagle rock would be getting the second group of new HD channels (planet green, the weather channel, bio, etc) and they said wed be getting them december 22nd. i think they were talking about the first group of new ones that include fox news since eagle rock is on the list to get those in december anyway.
The new HD channels will be available in your area starting 12/22/08. Some areas will get these new channels sooner than others because; some areas already have the capacity and technology to launch these new services. Our team is working hard to enhance your system so that we can launch all these new channels in your area.

Little known fact...if this happens again make sure to unplug your cable box then reset the modem...everything has to be turned on in a certain order with the phone turned on before the cable box....I had a similar thing happen when I switched out cable boxes....its weird but it happens...I am happy you now are back up and running....
DSperber 11-29-08, 08:23 AM Little known fact...if this happens again make sure to unplug your cable box then reset the modem...everything has to be turned on in a certain order with the phone turned on before the cable box....I had a similar thing happen when I switched out cable boxes....its weird but it happens...I am happy you now are back up and running....I have the cable into the house split. One side goes to the DVR, and the other side goes to the Arris modem (and then to my router+computers via RJ45 on the modem, and the nearest wall phone jack via telco on the modem to support all the phones in the house).
The DVR is thus totally independent of the Arris modem supporting Internet and phone.
I believe they simply hadn't yet gotten the telephone server up earlier the previous night and later in the day, as I had gone through the modem reset three times previously, all of which only succeeded in getting my modem's Internet lights lit up but no telephone lights.
It was only that fourth midnight reset (identical in procedure to all the earlier ones) which finally succeeded in restoring phone service. I'm sure the answer had to be on the TWC side.
dagware 11-29-08, 12:40 PM Anyone know if we're getting Sci-Fi HD? I'm surprised we didn't get it, considering some of the channels we actually did get in HD. I mean, seriously, do I really need CNN HD instead of Sci-Fi HD?
Dan
PS: I searched this thread but didn't find much mention of Sci-Fi HD. If I missed something, feel free to point me to it. Thanks.
DougDingle 11-29-08, 01:41 PM Anyone know if we're getting Sci-Fi HD?
I would just be happy if it existed on the digital tier instead of the analog one. Why are Sci-Fi and AMC the only two available in analog only?
Although an HD version would be nice, instead of some of that REALLY useless crap that's being foisted off on us to get the "WE HAVE 8000 HD CHANNELS!!!" to be sort of true.
hdtvfan2005 11-29-08, 01:46 PM TWC has made a deal with NBCUniversal for that channel. It's probably going to be offered in SoCal next year.

RadioManTodd 11-30-08, 09:06 PM OK this isn't HD... but on my non HD box upstairs, the software was recently updated, and all the menus are different. But whats happened now is that the channels aren't in order.
Example... HBOs:
It goes 503, 504 then skips to 508. And once you get to like 511, it rolls back over to 2. You can't see the other channels. Until you turn into them... and then they're sandwiched between some 1500 level channel.
Anyone got some insight?

calidude 12-03-08, 11:05 PM Ok, I'll change it to 720. I think it was defaulted to 1080i. Has anybody noticed a line of green pixels on the bottom left hand corner when viewing HD channels? For some reason it only shows up when watching HD. SD and DVD's don't have it. I wonder if it has to do with the 1080i setting?

THREE SHEETS WITH ZANE LAMPREY TRAVELS TO GREAT BRITAIN FOR THE SECOND ANNUAL THREE SHEETS NEW YEAR’S EVE PUB CRAWL FROM LONDON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 31 EXCLUSIVELY ONLINE AT WWW.MOJOHD.COM
Lamprey Leads Viewers on a Tour of International Pubs in Merry Old England for this year's special
*Zane to Host a Special Los Angeles Screening and “Zane Years Eve” at the Knitting Factory
New York, December 1 - Comedian Zane Lamprey has traveled the world in pursuit of the best bars, pubs and hangouts in over 45 countries on six continents for his fan-favorite series Three Sheets. He even traversed the mean streets of Manhattan for last year’s Three Sheets New Year’s Eve Pub Crawl. To ring in 2009, Zane’s travels across the pond for The Second Annual Three Sheets New Year’s Eve Pub Crawl from London which will begin streaming online exclusively on www.mojohd.com beginning New Year’s Eve (at the stroke of midnight, ET January 1, 2009). He scours the city to find various ethnically-inspired bars, pubs and restaurants. Thus, Lamprey creates a mini-“world tour” for Three Sheets fans to inspire their own festivities. This special will be available online for one month.
In this 45 minute special, Britain takes center stage, starting with Zane dropping in at the bar at Duke’s Hotel renowned for being Ian Fleming’s (author of the James Bond series) favorite spot. Zane learns how to make a “true” martini (gin not vodka) and finds out where Beefeater Gin got its name. Traveling to the East End, Zane visits the Mexican themed “Green and Red” with over 200 premium tequilas and samples Extra Añejo at $100.00 a shot. Hookahs and actual fishbowl drinks with lime, sugar, crushed ice, light and dark rum, absinthe and cranberry are the makings of a “bunny with a gun” drink at the next stop, “Casa Blue.”
Zane visits “The Nordic” bar in the Noho district and invites back Lars, a previous Three Sheets guest who pushed Zane into an ice cold Danish fjord as a hangover cure. Zane plans some good-natured revenge via a game of “drinking roulette” where Lars winds up drinking very hot chili drinks and practically melts his good humor. At the next location, “Utobeer” promises to match a patron’s personality to one of the hundreds of international beers they serve--including a bitter and twisted beer that suits the TV crew well. At Suffolk’s “The George Inn,” one of the oldest pubs in London, Zane meets up with old friend Steve McKenna, dresses in Shakespearian togs and shares beer. The pair winds up in the Soho district’s “Crobar,” sampling bourbons and Steve gets a major makeover.
While visiting www.mojohd.com to watch The Second Annual Three Sheets New Year’s Eve Pub Crawl from London, viewers can order DVD’s from the first three seasons of Three Sheets as well as the collectable Three Sheets t-shirts including: “The Good Burp,” “I’m Three Sheets,” “Steve McKenna’d” and “Pleepleus.”
Three Sheets is produced by Screaming Flea Productions. Executive Producers are Matt Chan and Mike Kelly. Field Producers are Christina Kindwall and Bert Klasey. For MOJOHD.com, Executive Producer is Emilio Nunez.
MOJOHD.com is owned and managed by iN DEMAND Networks.
Andrew LB 12-04-08, 05:35 AM I'm canceling my TWC service here in Seal Beach, CA and switching to FIOS. TWC has been promising us 50 additional HD channels since 2007 and since then, every single TWC customer in the US has received them except the city of Seal Beach and Santa Ana, CA.

I'm sure that this has been discussed before, but has anybody noticed that the quality of HD has gone down with TWC? I've noticed it the past 4-5 weeks. NBC has been the worst, it always seems kind of blurry. 24:redemption on FOX last week was OK most of the time and then many times it would be blurry or pixelated. I'm in Gardena with a SA8300HD box and Passport.
Does 7dbmv power signal seem too high? This is on the channel 199 diagnostic page. This has been creeping higher since I first got cable 3 years ago. It used to be -6 in the beginning before they "improved" the area and changed out splitters.
Anybody know when the new channels will be coming to Gardena/Torrance.
Thanks.

It sounds like you need to do a channel scan on your TV. TWC has been doing QAM channel reorganization lately, and it may have just hit your city.

Boy, no kidding. It sure has gotten worse over the last 18-24 months.
While everyone seems jazzed about the addition of more HD channels, the downside is, of course, that the giant COMPRESSION wheel will be turned up another few notches. We'll have lots more HD channels, and lots more compression blocky artifacts on everything but talking heads.
For the seven years I was with them, DirecTV had the same incremental quality drop by adding channels and increasing compression to compensate. I stayed with them because of their wonderful DirecTiVo boxes. When it finally got to be too much quality drop, and they went with their own crap DVR for HD, I left them, just like I'm going to leave TW eventually.
If I had OTA reception where I live, I'd leave TW now.
If the press release about DirecTV and TiVo prove to be true:
and there will be a new TiVo powered DirecTV DVR some time next year, and TW PQ has not significantly improved, I am so out of here.
hdtvfan2005 12-04-08, 08:34 PM I guess the SoCal areas that are getting Navigator are probably the SA areas. Motorola boxes aren't likely going to get it. They will be stuck with i-Guide. San Diego has had it since February.
CaCHooKa Man 12-04-08, 08:53 PM i finally have VOD working again. ive been getting a Host Reports: 1 Way RF only error when i tried watching anything ondemand and when i first sent them an email about it they said theyd send out a technician to fix it. it was scheduled for a friday and a tech never came. so i just let it be since i dont watch too much VOD anyway. the past couple of days ive been reading about this issue online and i found out that i most likely just need TWC to send me a CCV hit to fix it so i emailed them again and requested that. a few minutes after i got their response, VOD was working again.
If I had OTA reception where I live, I'd leave TW now.
I can get OTA but without cable or satellite there's no HBO, Showtime or ESPN or a few of the other channels I watch.

looks like i canceled my service just in time. $115/month for 17 blocky HD channels, a DVR and inconsistent internet speeds isn't worth it.
i'm going back to OTA tv and DSL internet. AT&T is offering $100 cash back and a free wireless router for new accounts. life without a DVR may be difficult, but it's better than paying for sub-par picture quality.

Hey Dylan. When I got up this morning at 5, I had an internet connection, but was having trouble connecting to random websites (Roadrunner webmail, for one). Since this happened once before a few weeks ago, I attributed it to my router blocking sites in a certain IP block, since a direct connect from my pc to the modem eliminated the problem. It disappeared in a couple of days.
But this time, by 6:30 am, my modem wouldn't sync at all. When I called TWC, I got the recording that they were aware of the problem, so it must have been region-wide. I'm still at work, but just tried calling TWC again, and there's no longer a message. Hopefully that means the problem is solved.

The Optical out works fine on my 8300HDC. You need to enable Dolby Digital and Audio to Wide. Also make sure your reciever is set to DD and the right input. Also set the Audio output to fixed. That is also important. It does work on HD programming.

Hey! I'm in ER too! Small world..
Bruin711 12-10-08, 01:51 AM This new guide on my DVR is driving me crazy. A lot of features were seemingly lost from the old guide. Why would they take away the ability to move things on your dvr list up or down so that you could put the stuff you care about less closer to the bottom to time out sooner?
Now it tells me the % that it is full but before it would have hourglasses next to the stuff that was about to time out and estimate how long I had before it would.
Also I cant slow motion with the DVR and when I am fast forwarding and rewinding it doesn't where I stop it like it used to. There are some other annoying things about this new guide that I am forgetting right now, but anyone have any answers for how to fix the others?

I'm subscribed to both packages and both the HD channels that have games on them have now been cut off. TWC says they cut off those channels to ALL customers, and you can no longer see package games in HD. Sounds a bit fishy to me......do these channels still come in for anyone?
For me, its channels 732 and 733 though it might differ for some of you.

I do not subscribe but they are still listed on my guide ...when I go to them they say that I need to subscribe which leads me to believe they are still up and running at least here in the O.C....

Thats the thing. They still show up in my guide as well but when you go to either of the channels, they say that I need to subscribe. I'm already subscribed......So, I'm wondering if anyone who is subscribed is able to actually access these channels.
Is anyone else having audio dropouts on the HD channels? I've been getting them for a few days now. I've got a DCT6200 box and the audio is via coax.
SPDICKEY 12-13-08, 01:55 AM they just connected my turbo cable internet update for 10.00 extra month i guess its 15Mbit/sec down and about 1Mbit/sec up but i seen some bursts of 29Mbit/sec down
I've had Turbo for a few months now. Speeds are generally like this, except when they're not.

bruce73 12-13-08, 08:07 AM bruce73
the turbo update is not called turbo its highest of 3 speed levels they sell in fullerton ca i went to TWC office to update my account and they asked if wanted it for 10.00 more a month, and i said sure.
When I called TWC to ask, the guy told me that the update was only available in certain areas, and that I had the fastest speed I could get where I am (10 Mb).
However, when I do a test with speakeasy.net, I get this ridiculous result of 25.5 Mb (confirmed with a 22.7 Mb result from speedtest.net). I do heavy downloading of media files and I've never seen any sustained speed higher than ~9.4 Mb. Occasionally it will shoot up to ~15Mb, but just until the cache fills. I don't understand this wide discrepancy.
DSperber 12-13-08, 11:54 AM I've had Turbo for a few months now. Speeds are generally like this, except when they're not.Still puzzled.
Speed for each user in an area is obviously determined by and "throttled" by a terminal server gateway. I had 6Mb "standard" download speed until I upgraded to Turbo. Almost instantaneously, while I was on the phone, they had me at 10Mb. I wonder if maybe there is already a much higher upper-limit available, well over 10Mb, for those who are paying for "commercial speeds", and some Turbo subscribers are lucky enough to have been "mis-handled" into this extreme service tier even though they were only supposed to get 10Mb for Turbo.
Try DSL Reports version of speed test (http://www.dslreports.com/stest/0) and see if the results are similar.
I spoke with TWC yesterday, including getting routed to 3rd-level support in RoadRunner national, and they told me that it depended on area as to current availability. But they did have a plan in motion to upgrade speeds nationwide. But no details on whether it would be the same $10 Turbo option (just with higher speeds).
Anyway, apparently in my area I'm currently stuck with what I have, which is 10Mb downloads for $10 Turbo option.

Also, $800.
mziegler 12-14-08, 11:53 AM I've been with TWC for quite a while. I am thinking about moving to Verizon Fios. Good idea? I would probably use them for internet, cable and phone.
Here's what I hate about TWC:
1. the 830HDC. I have had a number of boxes go out on me, and it is a crap shoot if the HDMI will work.
2. Reception is not great.
3. ?Fewer HD channels??
4. More expensive?
I do think the DVDR with TWC is easier to use than Verizon.
The TWC office if fairly close, so exchanges are easy. They are great about replacing items such as remotes and boxes--I just drop by and the replace with no questions.
Should I make the move? Opinions?

The question is not whether you should run, but rather how fast. With FiOS you get higher quality for a lower price. What on earth would be a reason not to switch?

Fortunately I'm in a former-Comcast area which is a Motorola infrastructure so that I have always had Moto STB/DVR boxes which all had active firewire ports (archive -> DVHS).
That's why I'm not on Dish or DirectTV and would not go to FIOS or u-Verse (even after evaluating the various pros and cons). No firewire -> deal breaker.
But that's just me.

The new HD channels have finally been added in the East San Fernando Valley. Also USA HD, SCI-FI HD and FX HD appear to be the east coast feed. No sign of Cartoon Network HD though. :(

TWC said it wasnt supposed to be in the clear and they "fixed" that after the olympics
TheKing75 12-17-08, 07:34 AM Here in Orange, CA, they just added these new HD Channels:
401 - KVEA HD (Telemundo 52)
441 - USA HD
442 - Bravo HD
443 - Sci-Fi Channel HD
444 - CNBC HD+
451 - Animal Planet HD
452 - The Travel Channel HD
456 - FX HD
460 - The Science Channel HD
465 - Fox News Channel HD
466 - Fox Business Channel HD
471 - NHL Network HD
So we got the first wave here, but we're not even listed on the second wave of channels coming soon page (Cartoon Network, ESPNU, etc.)
It'd be nice to have that wave, but getting USA and Sci-Fi is what I've been waiting for. Now if they would only get Spike HD, I'd be all set.
CaCHooKa Man 12-17-08, 07:43 AM nice.. they added them in eagle rock too. a rep told me they werent supposed to be added until the 22nd so this is a good early christmas present. :D
maybe they really didnt switch things up when i asked them about the second group of HD channels coming to my area. they said those would be coming on the 22nd and i thought that they just messed up and meant the channels we got today since eagle rock isnt on the list for the other group.

JohninLA 12-17-08, 11:52 AM Hi everyone, question.
I have 4 old Comcast cable boxes that have been around for years now. I have one Motorola 6412 PVR, one HD Motorola 2200 I believe it is. The other two are standard definition Motorola 2524 boxes.
Seeing how technology changes so quickly, my question is, should I exchange these boxes for whatever Time Warner is using? Are the boxes they are currently using any better than what I have now? Is there something I should specifically ask them for, or is something new on the horizon that I should just hang on and wait for?
Thanks for any advice!

They probably hadn't turned on this "filtering" late last night when they first rolled out the new channels. It's obviously now active.

bump on this question. Neither of these channels are showing up (even though they are listed on the guide) and TWC is insisting no one is getting them....
markt170 12-18-08, 10:03 AM As for the new channels that appeared in Encino yesterday, very little of it is actually in HD. The Fox News HD channel is disappointing because it's just added blather on the side of the screen. No studio shots or field shots are in HD. Also, most of the new channels have had massive pixilation the last two days.
Where are HBO and Showtime East Coast feed HD channels? And THe Movie Channel HD? And wasn't there also supposed to be another ESPN HD channel, like ESPN-U? And was there a BIO HD channel?
Is the NHL channel included or is there some separate fee for that? I'm getting the "not authorized" message on it.
If TWC can provide all of these channels without pixilation, then that would seem to be pretty much every HD channel that exists. Is there any other HD channel out there that we don't have?
markt170 12-18-08, 10:14 AM Ah, well now I see from the Twc website that the HBO etc. Eastcoast HD feed, BIO and ESPN-U are not coming until sometime in the future. My question still stands: Once we get those, is there any other HD channel in existence that we won't have?
SCI-FI HD still hasn't returned on my line-up.

I'm getting the same message and I subscribe to the sports tier and receive the channel on 275. I've called twice, first is described somewhere above, the second call resulted in the rep wanting to send someone out to check on it. I don't see how a service call is going to remedy a problem that apparently isn't just related to me.
Anyone notice a decrease in PQ after the new channels are added?
Yes. I'm getting occasional picture breakup and sound drops - mostly on ABC. Sometimes it just flickers but drops the sound for 4-5 seconds. All started yesterday with the channel additions. Could be weather related, but I noticed it again tonight during World News.

The problem most of us are experiencing are due to TWC compressing the HD signal by approximately 15-35% wich causes pixellation. This is a problem with the source and no amount of pristine wiring will ever correct a poorly recoded HD stream.Having said that i am noticing at least a slight improvement in PQ since TWC turned on the last batch of HD offerings.
CaCHooKa Man 12-19-08, 04:06 AM in the past few weeks ive noticed the size of my heroes recordings has been getting smaller. at the beginning of the season episodes without commercials were around 3.7 GB and the one this week was down to around 2.9. TNT, FSN, ESPN and locals have gotten noticeably worse too. channels like HD theater, discovery and national geographic still look alright though.

Same here (Eagle Rock).
The night they added FX HD, they were feeding us the East coast feed. Later that morning it was switched to the West coast feed and I guess they forgot to fix the guide. The same thing happened when Adelphia switched us over to the West coast feed of Sci-Fi.

In this thread two solutions have worked for a problem you describe.
1. Power cycle your cable box.
2. Have TWC send a signal to your box, that will reauthorize the channel(s)
If these solutions are not available or do not work then you just have to wait a little while until things get resolved.
Good Luck.

RandyWalters 12-23-08, 01:11 PM TWC just added some more HD channels here in El Segundo - they're in the guide on my SA8300HD but they're not showing up in my Tivo S3's guide yet (sometimes it takes a few days before Tivo catches up). Torrance and Gardena and Hawthorne are on our small network and my provider still says they have enough bandwidth for all the new channels and that they're not going to need to use SDV. The file sizes on the local HD channels are still virtually the same as the OTA channels and the picture quality is still perfect so they're still not compressing the signal here.
The newest channels are:
441 USA HD
442 Bravo HD
443 SciFi HD
444 CNBC HD
451 Animal Planet HD
452 Travel HD
456 FX HD
460 Science HD
465 FNCHD
466 FBNHD
469 VSHD
471 NHLHD (subscription required)
And this was the lineup for the past few months before the above channels were added:
402 KCBSD

The thing is, the only HD channel i'm really waiting for is SPEED-HD but they don't know when it will be added :D
CaCHooKa Man 12-23-08, 06:43 PM TWC told me that the second group of channels would be available in my area (eagle rock) 5 days from now. when i asked a few weeks ago they said theyd be available on the 22nd but now they said it would take 5 days after launch for them to appear.
