I am not sure if I have the tool so if someone has a download link (and I apologize if it's already been provided) could you please post it?

This should work :

http://www.videohelp.com/download/mpeg2repair1015.zip

Or Scroll down to "Mpeg2repair" section at following link ..

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/digitaltv-dvb-hdtv

Just noticed that TSPE(also available at above link) has been updated from the version I have(.301) to .740 and has changed from freeware to Trialware ...... It is handy to see what all streams in the TS contain the errors (Mpeg2repair will only report on the errors for the video/audio streams you're keeping and not stripping out), but if only a couple of us could check it with TSPE and see if we get the same results that'd be enough I'd think and M2R(which provides better info for the erros and timestamps involved regarding the video/audio streams, specifically) would suffice otherwise ...

Ok, Ran the cap involved through MPEG2repair with verbose logging turned on, to compare to the examples bluestraw provided from his log, for the errors that seem to correspond between our two logs :

For the error Around 5:59 PM :

Bluestraw's log :

Sequence Frame 107583(2-I) / Time 1:01:46 : AROUND 5.59.15
VideoWarning: Discontinuity of (11+) packet(s). First packet ending at offset 8985534459

My log (now verbose) :

--------------------

For The error around 6:32:30 :

Bluestraw's Log:

--------------------------

They're indeed EXACTLY the same error extremely likely happening at the exact same time (timestamps and file offsets being different since we started our caps at different times) .... No way IMO it's a coincidence or "Indepedant" glitches on our end due to reception issues, and keep in mind, there were only 5 errors logged total for the 5.1 streams in my log between 5:36 and 7:36pm ....

I would like feedback on if I get an OTA HD Receiver if it will improve the signal pickup over hooking it up to built in Tv tuner or Dish Receiver.I live out in Amelia and get both Cincy and Dayton channels in the 70's but get quite a bit of dropout. I have used both a DB2 and C2 antenna with about the same results. Is my problem more of a receiver or antenna problem.Antenna is outside and up about 6ft from the bottom of the roof. Thanks Karl

Got this from WXIX Chief Engineer.

The audio is low because we were attempting to deal with a problem we were having with Fox HD audio levels during dramatic programming. Example – “House”. Since normally when we splice the Fox HD transport stream into our encoder we have no handle on audio levels (or video levels) since their transport stream is spliced directly into our digital encoder which is the last piece of equipment in line before the transmitter. We were trying to compensate for the extreme difference in audio levels when we would cut to our local interstitials from Fox HD (which would knock you off your chair). We tried experimenting with lowering our overall level to more closely match Fox to avoid the huge difference in levels. However, it seems that recently Fox has taken note of our many complaints regarding low audio levels on their dramatic programming as just recently their levels have come up closer to normal. The reason the audio level is lower when we run the ticker is because we are now decoding the Fox HD signal so we can run it through our ticker. And when it runs through our ticker it also is processed through our audio path which has been lowered due to the reasons I just explained above. We will raise our overall levels back to normal, probably by Monday.

Now for further explanation, as you may be wondering why we are now able to decode Fox HD and run the ticker over Fox in HD when in the past we had to resort to an up-converted SD Fox signal in 4x3 with the dreaded black “wings” to get the ticker on. We have installed a transport stream decoder for Fox HD so that we can now run a ticker and weather alerts over Fox in HD. Which do you think derogates the HD signal more, going to up-converted SD in 4x3 with the black wings or decoding the transport stream and staying in 16x9 HD? We may possibly be the only Fox affiliate in the country that is running a ticker and alerts over Fox in HD.

Hope this clarifies to anyone experiencing the issue.

Wow. They wasted a bunch of money.

From what I've read, Fox will be replacing the network gear at their expense to allow for crawls. Needless to say, there's a very good reason why they're the only station doing it.

The equipment that was purchased was not waste, it is needed aside from the FOX splicer equipment. This how I figured they were doing without the needed upgrade from FOX. Is there any date to when FOX is providing "Splicer 2.0"? I think having a decoder in the forthcoming digital broadcast age would be a benefit if not a requirement for some stations. Beside the point, I think FOX19 is doing a pretty good job considering where they came from. Do they still have some issues, yes, will the upcoming splicer upgrade replace the current form of placing warnings on the screen, yes, but in the time of here in now, good decision on their part. I mean this was supposed to be their main signal in a couple of days:).

How is a "transport stream decoder for Fox HD" needed for anything besides the Fox splicer?

I've been told "before the fall season."

And they could save themselves money that could instead go into, say, HD syndication if they're not already providing it. Other Fox stations are waiting on the new splicer to provide crawls for them.

I don't really want to comment further until maybe someone who knows something for certain chimes in on just what piece of gear it is Raycom's acquired for WXIX and how recyclable it is.

Depends on how good (probably most importantly at handling multipath) the DTV/HD receiver in the TV and Dish Network receiver are.

If they are more recent models, you might not have much luck improving things with a OTA HD STB, but every situation can be different.

Best thing to do in most circumstances though, is to improve the antenna setup. That might just involve finding a better spot to mount the antenna, or optimizing the aiming, or making sure you have good connections(and issues such as making sure your outdoor connections are waterproof/you aren't getting any water in the coax). If you post your TVfool results, so we can see if issues involving signifincant terrain obstructions might be an issue, or whether or not it's likely a preamp might help (or hurt) we might be able to help more.

Concerning WXIX, as I believe was mentioned/discussed here at the time, I believe they were Keying in local graphics and crawls with the FOX HD feed up as early as election night. (Nov 4, 08)

I do not know the details, but I wonder if the new equipment from Fox would allow them to insert *any* local graphics they might want(which seems to pretty much be the case, now), in any way they want, or if there are limitiations involved.

Do also keep in mind WXIX has been doing their Local News in HD for some time now, hopefully HD syndication isn't far behind -- I haven't seen anything HD there other than local news or Fox programming .... But, I did notice Last night that WKEF Dayton now has "Seinfeld" HD, it was of course still 4x3 SD upconvert from WXIX .... On that note, Exceptions being WCPO and "Dr Phil" on WLWT, The Dayton stations, nowadays, except WBDT are all doing Syndicated HD -- There's quite a bit of it available from Dayton stations that isn't available from Cincinnati staitons --- While quite a bit of that is in the late night hours on weekends from WHIO, WKEF or WRGT, There is also "seinfeld" now from WKEF and "ET" from WHIO, and possibly something else I'm not thinking of ..

Anyway, I know equipment for broadcast use can be quite expensive, and I don't know what might raise that expense regarding a TS decoder and the splicer (for one thing it probably involves a ASI feed via Fiber, and I know how Fox controls the splicer in a "affiliate specific way" is unique, and I wonder if that might be a issue involved) -- But, otherwise I can't imagine why a Transport Stream Decoder *should* be all that expensive ... My understanding is, the HD feed via the splicer is just a ATSC compliant MPEG-2 Transport stream -- You wouldn't want to use anything like this for "broadcast use", but of course most of us with PC's have or can get what is necessary to process and decode a MPEG-TS (it doesn't even have to be "ATSC compliant" necessarily) for free.

In any case, Personally, regardless of what equipment they're using, regarding keying in the local graphics/crawls, I simply won't watch it if it distorts the video (And I do seem to recall there was a lot of that going on from WXIX on Nov 4) ... I don't care if it's HD or SD, It looks bad, and I'd watch "non-distorted" SD over HD with "funhouse" distortions to the Aspect ratio any day ... Which of course means, except for Local news from stations like WKRC(they don't have the funhouse video during local news, if you notice -- OTOH, WHIO does) I don't watch much TV from the commercial stations around here when there are "school closings" and similar going on -- except from WCPO, that is .... I did also notice during the last bit of snow/ice/school closings WDTN is correctly "pulling in the sides" now to preserve AR (including during HD) when they insert crawls (and I find their weather warning bugs fairly unobtrusive as well) -- But unfortunetly they aren't doing that when they key in the school closings ...

Oh, I do appreciate though that WXIX has apparently made the choice to switch back to the splicer w/o the extra decode/reencode process when they aren't keying in local crawls/graphics/etc ....

Do agree with JYDogg that they've "come a long way" since their Fox "weirdscreen" days ;) ... Even then, though -- When someone remembered to run "down the hall" and get the settings right on their AR converter, they were "ahead" of many Fox affiliates, as they've had 1080i HD capability right from the start (around 2000 when they came on air), and their upconversion of the "anamorphic"(or call it 16x9 NTSC video, take your pick) 480i 16x9 "widescreen" feed from fox to 1080i actually looked pretty good ... when they didn't "squeeze in" pillarbars and make it funhouse 4x3 (Fox weirdscreen we called it) that is ...... First time I remember seeing it was for 2002 superbowl, and I caught h*** for it here(not on this thread, we didn't have a "local area" at that time) for saying something like I thought it looked "pretty good" LOL ....

Bluestraw,

First, Given that it looks like you started your cap around 4:57~4:58 PM -- I take it you didn't get a bunch of errors between 4:57~5:03pm ( about 0 to 5 or 6 minutes for your time stamps) I had in my 4:30~5:30pm cap between about 4:54pm~5:03PM (24:10~32:58 in my 4:30 log file). ?

I'm pretty sure those were "specifically" on my end, and therefore not useful involving trying to figure out what's going on with WLWT, ---- but "just in case", it would be helpful for me to know "for sure" that someone else did or did not get those as well ....

Thanks !No, I didn't get any errors before that one. I guess those ones were all yours!

I capped Heroes last night, and here's my log. The cap started around 8.58. Let's see if these ones also match...

If you ask me, it should be the other way around... Cable and satellite companies are the ones that should be watching out for themselves. People who are strapped for cash should be cutting the TV bill and making use of the local TV stations' free broadcasts.

I don't think it's a who cares, but it seems to me the death of TV as an advertising delivery system has to happen eventually. I'm disgusted with all but one of my affiliates down here in Lexington and I'm OTA only so it matters. If the networks went to cable, cable rates would increase to the point people would finally stop putting up with them.

HBO has the best model, my fantasy is subscription networks. Mostly I'm curious if people would pay to see the drivel networks now put on or if they'd insist on some quality. Realistically I'm starting to see BD as an alternative to TV - I've only viewed Mad Men and Band of Brothers so far, but the idea of watching a TV show on BD that you've never seen is pretty cool beans. So let'em put 40 minute shows on in an hour slot, I'll catch up later.

If they start charging for what I get now I would just stop watching. I have other things to do in my life and will not waste money on TV shows.

MNTV will be dropping most of its programming. Any chance of WSTR changing to the CW? I would think they could keep the WWE wrestling and WKRC could keep their 10pm news too. Just being hopeful to get HD CW back.

Thanks much for the info. I haven't figured out what happened or might have happened there.

In case it happened again, I thought I'd let you post your log first this time, as there was one spot in my log where it LOOKED like I might have had a glitch on my end during "heroes" last night .... But now I'm not sure whether it was or not, it actually doesn't seem likely after seeing your log (more on that in a bit) ...

I did leave TSreader running on WLWT for several hours Yesterday, and averaged about 4 errors every hour(which is about what we're getting "from them" I think) ... I also left TSreader running on WXIX for several hours and had no errors ....

I capped Heroes last night, and here's my log. The cap started around 8.58. Let's see if these ones also match...

Started my cap at 9:03pm, ran it until 10:03pm -- I've included ALL the errors in my log(for the "channel" 5-1 streams) over that hour below, except the "invalid huffman code" error I allways get with my cap software due to it "cutting off" the TS at the very end of the cap, which is of no consequence or interest.

Note the difference in the M2R timestamps between our logs is exactly about 5 minutes, 57.5 seconds in EACH case :

If it's not just a coincidence, and I had a "glitch" on my end at the exact same time as WLWT had an "error" --- Why the "difference" when everything else in our logs "matches up"? Of course, even if they DO match, the next challenge is escalating this to the right place within WLWT. Any ideas?

Afraid I can't help much there. Except for involving a few folks at certian stations, I've pretty much "retired" from that sort of thing as for one thing, in some cases it can be about as much fun as pulling your teeth out.. But certianly feel free to use/pass along any of the info from my posts or logs if any of it helps ..

I have talked to WLWT engineers in the past regarding certian issues, (one of them even PM'd me here once, although I don't think he ever posted anything), but It's been years, and I don't think any of those guys are there anymore ....

Oh, BTW -- If/when I get the time, I'm not sure if it will be apparent for any given frame what some of these errors "look like" as "glitches on screen" during decoding with any particular decoder(I'm thinking different decoders may handle some of this differently) --- I think I'll try runing one of the caps (such as Heros) through dgindex and Vdub (probably using dgdecode as a decoder via a avisynth script) and if it turns out "well enough"(and it's non-combed, as I'm not sure if I de-interlace it if it will result in a good representation of what it might look like on most folks TV's), in one of the spots where we both get the same errors and see if I can post a screenshot ... (I'll have to resample/resize it though to attach it here) ...

According to the blog:

MNTV will be dropping most of its programming. Any chance of WSTR changing to the CW? I would think they could keep the WWE wrestling and WKRC could keep their 10pm news too. Just being hopeful to get HD CW back.

Won't miss it at all...

Ok, just did that ... screenshot attached to this post is what the video error at this spot in our M2R logs from "heroes" last night "looks like" looking at it frame by frame and as decoded using dgdecode as MPEG2 video decoder. Had to resize it from 1920x1080 to 1024x576 to attach it here due to forum limitations on resolution/size for attachments.

This is the error as seen before running the cap through Mpeg2repair. Different equipment/decoders might handle this error differently.

As seen in real time rather than looking at it "frame by frame", I suppose it could result in anything from what might look like a "dropout", or might look like a "freeze", or the bottom 1/2 of the last frame "freezing" for a short time "over" the next new frame, likely several of them ... In any case, I didn't describe that very well, but those are the sorts of occasional "glitches" I've seen when watching WLWT Live lately .... I should note I also noticed numerous audio "pops" and one short loss of audio(lasting in the lower 10's of ms I'd guess) at the end of the coverage of the Presidental press conference last night, just before "Heroes" begain ....

Note: The exact timecode for my cap for this frame is 44:33.204 .... Frame # 80116. - This is Honoring TFF/RFF flags in Dgindex - had to do that to find the right spot in Vdub via using the timecode info from M2R log.

I also looked at the error around 9:18 in this fashion -- It is similar, But much less visably noticable - Barely noticable really when looking at it on a frame by frame basis. Interestingly, perhaps however, in this case the effected area of the frame is more visable when I looked at it using the file I had from after running it through MPEG2repair ... It's the only way I spotted it, in fact ...

Here is my verbose log from mpeg2repair, of my capture of Heroes from Monday night. I think it is becoming obvious that these errors are coming from WLWT and not from our own individual setups.

When playing back my raw transport stream file in Media Player Classic, I see the exact same image you attached. I see the horizontal "line" through Sylar's head and the "lighter" square towards the right/center of that line. I saw a simliar effect when looking at the "9:18" error. Both were visable in real time in playing back the transport stream, but were pretty quick so easy to miss. I tried to capture my screen showing the same as yours but can't seem to get it to work right now.

All,

I'd appreciate some help tonight by capping WLWT from 8 to 10pm. I'm helping their engineering team to pinpoint the places where 'their' errors happen during that session tonight, and I'd like to eliminate any of my own reception issues before I report back to them tomorrow.

So, the good news is they're aware and working on it, so thanks to everyone who helped gather the data thus far to help some of us out with our communications with WLWT.

Jeff,

Looking back to Monday's Heroes, I had a similar thought to you about that error which happens for both of us, but in a different way. I never get 'TEI errors' on my caps with BeyondTV, due to the way the 'StreamStrip' process runs after each cap. So that can explain why it looks so different - maybe my original unprocessed stream would be identical.

On a similarly 'odd' note, I sometimes cap via a MyHD card, though I get MORE errors in this one than with my other tuner. I never used to have problems, and the other stations still come in fine (it's the same antenna), so I can only guess that there's something in the stream that that tuner is not handling as well as the other. I don't understand much about .ts structures, but I do know there is some error correction built in and perhaps there are even more 'errors' than we know about that typically the error correction can solve, providing the tuner is 'good' at error correction...

hey guys - I hope you can help... I did a search on the forum but couldn't find my answer. I am on TWC and I bought a new tv last week for a bedroom upstairs. Just plugging it into cable (without a set-top box), I get digital channels in several of the rooms I take the TV into (5.001, 5.002, etc.), but in the room I want the tv in, the digital stations say the signal is too weak. If I put an amp on in that line in the basement, they come in fine in the room. These digital stations were found during the initial set-up of the TV - select if you have cable or antenna (selected cable) and then did a channel autosearch.

Figuring I needed a boost, I had TWC come out over the weekend. Even though I showed them that I can simply plug in the TV that I get the local digital stations, they tell me that TWC isn't passing the local digital stations through analog cable without a set-top box and that I need to have the cable re-wired in the house because they claim the cable is acting like an antenna and is picking up the OTA stations. However, I know several people with TWC that get local HD stations on their new TVs without a TWC set-top box - and several live in an area with terrain such that they couldn't pick up OTA analog without a snowy picture and OTA HD is out of the question. I find it hard to believe that they spent several hundred dollars on antenna's and amps, etc, but the dinky coax cable can pick them up - TWC must be passing the local HD stations?

So the question is - are any of you able to get the local digital HD stations on TWC without a TWC set-top box?

I happened to have WLWT 5 analog up just before 8pm, and I do believe they went off air for a few seconds .... The same MIGHT have occcured on the digital station, such as if they lost power momentarily, and/or had to switch to back up power ....

I'd appreciate some help tonight by capping WLWT from 8 to 10pm.

Afraid mine are a bit of a mess, due to issue on my end I think I may have made some progress on figuring out what may be going on(but not fixing yet). so I'm not sure how much use they'd be, other than errors which occur at same time as are in others logs -

So, I'll wait until other's post before I post matching errors/times from my logs

I never get 'TEI errors' on my caps with BeyondTV, due to the way the 'StreamStrip' process runs after each cap.

Yeah, same thing happens if I were to run a cap through "other software" such as H2M.

I've found capping the entire TS useful in these sorts of situations for checking to see what all streams in the TS are effected by errors - It's usually pretty easy to spot a reception, or poor receiver performance related dropout as all streams are effected since nothing useful can be decoded when the SNR is below 15dB SNR. or to say it another way, FEC can't keep up with all the "errors".

And of course MPEG2repair strips everything you don't need except what is needed for the streams for the program(subchannel) you want to keep, as well as renumbering the PID's.

Looking back to Monday's Heroes, I had a similar thought to you about that error which happens for both of us, but in a different way. Hard to say ... Would be interesting to know, and I know this doesn't seem to make much sense, but I'm guessing they might have been "different" --- while I don't think it was a "coincidence", given they happened at same time, nevertheless, I also think only at that "spot" those errors in my cap and the difference to yours might still also involve problem on my end ...

I also ran "heroes" through TSPE, and at that point (the only incidence of error from "Heros" for which that was the case, the earlier errors were logged succesfully), TSPE locked up, but before it did, in additon to logging TEI errors in several streams actually present in WLWT's TS, It logged a 2MB .txt file of "junk" data, logging TEI and continuity errors for PID's that don't even exist in WLWT's stream ...

Oh, The file actually decodes OK, except for about 4 seconds at that point, before running through MPEG2repair, the players I tried it with just pause at that error, and "skip" about 4 seconds ...AFter running through MPEG2repair, at that point, the video "freezes" for a few seconds, audio continues fine, then after a few seconds everything is fine .....

... but I do know there is some error correction built in and perhaps there are even more 'errors' than we know about that typically the error correction can solve, providing the tuner is 'good' at error correction...

Oh, there are .... If I understand what you are saying correctly, the way I understand it/think of it --- the sorts of errors involving what the receiver's 8VSB demod/equalizer/etc, "is good at", really occur "outside" of the TS/ payload we're working with, and would involve the Trellis coding and R-S FEC ...

I think this document describes how it works fairly well :

http://www.broadcast.net/~sbe1/8vsb/8vsb.htm

Although you might want to also check out the ATSC A/53 docs on ATSC website, particuarly Part 2 : Transmission System Characteristics, and Part 3 Service Multiplex and Transport Subsystem Characteristics, those docs are available for download(free) here :

http://www.atsc.org/standards/a53.php

The A/54 "guide" doc is also available for download from that page, and although older, also still useful .... Actually, you might want to start with that one ...

Here's a general description from it regarding "RF transmission" - the "digital bit stream" BEFORE the channel coding and modulation is the 19.39Mb/s TS ("Payload") we're working with(after demodulation/repacketization/equalization by the receiver), the "additional information" is R-S FEC and Trellis coding -- For OTA, only 8-VSB is used, 16-VSB uses less error correction, and thus offers a greater payload rate in a 6MHZ channel -- roughly the same as QAM256 (~38Mb/s about twice the payload rate with 8-VSB OTA, becuase of the additional error correction needed for OTA) :

4.1.3 RF Transmission
“RF Transmission” refers to channel coding and modulation. The channel coder takes the digital bit stream and adds additional information that can be used by the receiver to reconstruct the data from the received signal which, due to transmission impairments, may not accurately represent the transmitted signal. The modulation (or physical layer) uses the digital bit stream information to modulate a carrier for the transmitted signal. The modulation subsystem offers two modes: an 8-VSB mode and a 16-VSB mode.

So the question is - are any of you able to get the local digital HD stations on TWC without a TWC set-top box?

Yes...TWC does indeed send the LOCAL digital stations ONLY in the clear or unscrambled...The tech was just trying to make a sale...Had you agreed to get the more expensive service you would have seen just how quickly your wiring would have been fine...

Yes, it seems the WLWT engineering team is "on it" regarding this issue. I captured Life and Law and Order tonight and am starting the mpeg2repair log generation now and will report back tomorrow morning after I get some sleep!

THE FCC HAS SPOKEN: In part ...

In contrast to the stations remaining on the air and those that have previously terminated analog service or complied with the Third DTV Periodic Report and Order procedures to terminate analog service before February 17th, we have identified 123 stations of the 491 intending to terminate analog service on February 17th whose early termination poses a significant risk of substantial public harm.
. . .
Accordingly, we hereby reconsider the partial waiver granted by the February 5th Public Notice to those stations listed on the Appendix attached to this Public Notice. These stations are, therefore, not permitted to terminate their analog service on February 17th, unless they comply with the conditions and procedures described below.
. . .
Stations listed in the Appendix to this Public Notice may obtain reinstatement of the waiver necessary for them to terminate analog service on February 17, 2009 by certifying to the Commission, not later than the close of business (6:00 pm EST) on Friday, February 13th, that they will individually undertake the measures specified herein as a means of ameliorating the public interest harms that the termination of their analog service would engender. We also encourage stations in the markets listed in the Appendix to cooperate and undertake the actions on a joint basis. Each station should certify in response to this Public Notice its compliance with the following eight measures. These certifications will reflect that the station is undertaking the action individually or that they have confirmed that another station will do so.

Here is my report from Life. I have the newer version of BeyondTV which "StreamSnips" on the fly as it writes the stream to disk. (For those that don't know what StreamSnip is, it is BeyondTV's way of stripping out the irrelevant data from the stream. For example, if I am recording a show on 5-1, I don't need the data from 5-2 so it will cut that out to save disk space). I can still do captures that include the entire 19+ Mbps stream by setting an option, or by doing a manual capture with other software, but I think the error report is showing the data we need at this point so I have not bothered.

Anyway, I do see several matches with BlueStraw's logs.

Ok, last night my caps were pretty messy.

Afraid mine are useless, because of issue on my end ... (still working on it)

I've attached them, below but I probably wouldn't pay any attention to them/try to make any sense out of it ...

Stopped one after 11 minutes, began the next a couple of minutes later and ran it until 10 ... Start times (per PC Clock) are included in filenames ....

I'm sure Bluestraw has heard but WLWT engineers are sending the capture they did last night (which hopefully includes the same errors that our captures showed at 9:06pm and 9:34pm) off to the encoder vendor for analysis. Hopefully they will be able to figure it out from there.

There is a confusing new filing to FCC from WPTO concerning analog shut off ...

To make a long story short, I think it currently looks like it's likely WPTO 14 won't be shutting down on Feb 17 ..

Here's what ThinkTV's DTV info on their website HERE (http://www.thinktv.org/digitaltv.html) currently says about it :

On February 4, 2009 Congress voted to postpone the digital television transition to June 12, 2009.

ThinkTV16/WPTD has requested and been granted permission to transition its analog over-the-air channel to digital February 17, 2009.

Plans are underway to transition ThinkTV14/WPTO’s over-the-air analog channel in the near future.

So, At this point, WSTR seems to be the only Cincinnati DMA station that is likely to shut down analog Feb 17 ...

I suppose we should probably talk about the Dayton stations in Dayton thread ...

WPTO new date to turn off is the June date. WPTO is in the Cincinnati DMA so I think it's ok to talk about it this thread.

You can Start a quote with
....

I can't show how to start and end a quote in the same post(see a recent post of mine in dayton thread on how to end a quote), as the code will, well, actually "make" a quote ;)

And right, that's why I posted about WPTO here ....

Just saying, there's a LOT going on right now involving the Dayton stations, and analog shut off, and I know there are folks who only read this thread. And, we sometimes end up talking about the Dayton stations here, which makes sense in some cases such as regarding someone's reception of Dayton stations who is in Cincinnati area, or involving what the Dayton stations are doing vs. Cincinnati stations (such as HD syndication) ...

But in this case, I was just saying I thought (for the most part) we should probably discuss this particular issue involving the Dayton stations in the Dayton thread ....

And actually, the reason I said that was because I was about to post info about the Dayton stations in my last post as well, given there was already info on WPTD on ThinkTV website info, but thought it better to compose a post for dayton thread instead .. Hence my comment .... :)
to end and
to start. So reverse the tags and then put the text between the two tags. So it is possible to include both. ;)

You would laugh if you knew how much time I spent once, many moons ago trying to do what you just did ..... I didn't even think about trying 'backwards", though ... LOL ....

Yup, just received a similar email from WLWT. Who knows how long it will take, but at least the process has started!

Well, can't say for sure yet, but think I've fixed the issue causing the glitches on my end ....

Wish I had known I had an issue and had time to fix it before we started comparing logs, LOL!!!!

So, FWIW, In case it's of any use --- here are what I'm pretty sure are "clean" logs for my end for My Cap from WLWT-DT during 'ER' tonight ... Well, except for the last error, which again I think is due to the TS being "ended" by the cap software .... Started this at 9:59:00, stopped it at 11:01:00 (more or less) ....

Now, follows is the TSPE Log --- Note: TSPE (ver .301 - what I am using) doesn't check for video/audio encoding errors(or for corrupted AC3 frames, or timestamp gaps) like M2R does -- Only TEI or Continuity errors in the TS .....

The 4 errors found are the same 4 "discontinuity" errors found by M2R in 5.1 (2 of them) and 5.2(2 of them) video streams ... Stream at PID 0x0051 is 5.1's HD video stream, Stream at PID 0x0061 is 5.2's SD video stream ....

Oh, the streams Identified in the "PID list" shown in the log as "PES"(packetized elementary streams) aren't as fully identified as they are by TSreader, but, in this case, they are used by PSIP tables or EIT/ETT streams ... Oh, also Note the Null packet stream isn't included in the list (PID at 0x1fff) ..

What's interesting about the TSPE log(what it can tell you of interest that M2R can't) I think is the absense of "discontinuties" in other streams besides the Video streams, as In any case I've seen, I'd get errors in ALL the streams due to "reception issue", because of the time it takes for receiver to drop below threshold(15db SNR), then go back "above" threshold, and re-require a lock and start decoding again ...

And TSPE would defintely show them if there were any in any of the streams listed in the "PID list" ..... Not to say that their aren't necessarily more streams "effected" by these errors involving WLWT at any given time, as one of my earlier caps showed an error in stream at 0x11Fb(used by several PSIP tables) that also (about same time) effected video streams, and another in 5.1's PMT which also effected video streams ... But, it is possible those could have been "effected" by issue on "my end", although in those cases, still other streams(such as audio or EIT/ETT streams) weren't effected by the errors ...

I'm thinking it's possible we Just may be seeing them MUCH more often (at a rate of 4 per hour) in the Video streams because of course, they use a lot more of the bandwidth, and Have the most Packets .....

Ok, enough said ... sounds like WLWT is on it, Thanks to Bluestraw and jimp2244 for contacting them ...

While we'rere on the subject of "glitches" ....

WPTO-DT

I've been seeing a lot of glitches with WPTO-DT for some time now(not WPTD-DT I don't think although I can't say for sure as I haven't watched them or tested all that much), with all my receivers ... I don't watch them much, but I think it's been going on for at least several weeks, if not more.

I've just been doing some testing, and it does not appear to be an issue on my end. Unlike is the case with "reception" related dropouts(when SNR drops below 15DB, BER gets too high) the Signal quality/SNR remains high when the errors(Continuity and TEI errors - a lot of them) occur.

Anyone else seeing that?

Thanks,

------------------------------------

WCET-DT :

Also, this has been the case for a long time now -- Still getting continuity errors in WCET's EIT/ETT streams, but none of the other streams in their TS ... Probably averaging about one every few minutes or so -- Doesn't seem to really be a problem though, including involving decoding the EPG info in the EITs ...

WCET-DT Additional audio stream at PID 42 (0x002a) :

Not a "glitch" -- But in case anyone was wondering what that stream is -- I found a way to demux-* a stream they have using PID #42 at 0x002a (192Kb/s), which is identified as "unknown usage" by Tsreader ... turns out, it is an AC3 audio stream, not associated with 48.1 or 48.2, and I don't think DTV receivers(or most of them, anyway) will find it ....

When I checked it out, it was audio of some fellow reading local Obituaries for Northern KY ... I Just capped about 5 minutes and checked it out again, and it is a fellow talking about stocks/investing -- It's not from WGUC, as they are running Music .... So, I'm not sure what it is/what they are using it for ...

* - TSreMux finds it as an audio stream, I use TSreMux to keep only that stream (PID 42) and remux the TS(strip everything else out of the TS), then MPEG2StreamClip will either play the audio(Not having a video stream in the TS seems to confuse some players), or demux it to AC3 Elementary stream and play with just about anything (MP/etc) ...

It looks like MY64 will be the only station in the Cincinnati and Dayton area to go fully digital come Tuesday unless ThinkTV (Channel16) gets a waiver from the FCC to keep analog on.

So I have been following all the chat about WLWT and when did this problem become evident? I read that WLWT had shut down their transmitter, but does anyone know the extent of the work they did? Did they mess with the transmitter only or go back in the stream to the encoder? Honestly, I only watch the Office on NBC, and these errors seem to be quite short, so are they visible to the naked eye? Also, is this for OTA only? Good to hear WLWT is on it, but I would think they could retrace their steps to see if they changed anything. Sorry if I repeat any questions, just trying to wrap my head around it.

PID42 Re:

I've seen that PID at 0x002a in WOSU-DT's stream as well, assume it might be for that also, although last time I pulled them in and looked at it in TSreader, at the time the bandwidth usage was 0 .... Probably PID #42 there as well, but Tsreader doesn't tell you the PID # for streams without MPEG2 Identifers it recognizes, in which case which it identifies those streams as "unknown usage" ....

------------------------------

WLWT Glitches Re:

As Bluestraw said, I also think it would be great if someone could have done a cap of WLWT's Streams via TW Cable and run it through mpeg2repair to compare with our OTA caps, if the errors didn't show up there, that might tell us something ....

If they aren't happening via cable --- assuming they are still feeding TW a feed via fiber ---- I don't know how WLWT's equipment is setup, but, since it does not appear to be a RF/Transmission issue, and since not all the streams in the TS have errors at any given incidence of error --- such as no errors in the audio streams when there is error in the video stream(s) ... Just a wild guess, but my best guess might be maybe a problem with the Mux/TS which is sent OTA vs what is done for cable, again if it is the case there is something "different" about the Mux/TS before the exiciter OTA vs. the Mux/TS that gets sent to TW via fiber ....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WXIX "timestamp gaps" and other "glitches" I've noticed in stations transport streams I'd forgotten about, and Some other general thoughts on "glitches" in TS and encoding errors :

Another "glitch" I had forgotten about, until I capped Terminator:SCC tonight from WXIX and ran it through MPEG2repair (log attached) .... Note : If you've never seen a log like this from Fox, the reason for the MPEG2 sequences involves that Fox has their encoding set up like this (we get exactly what Fox encodes at network level via the Splicer at the affilate which effectively "bypasses" the local encoder during the Fox Programming/national commercials) ..... The begin/end of the sequences typically involve commercial breaks ...

There are only two errors in the log. Both are Audio Timestamp gaps occuring right together. I don't recall if on previous occasions capping from WXIX if they have all been audio Timestamp gaps like the one that occured tonight around 8:19 PM(see errors at 18:59 timestamps in Attached Log - Cap started at 8pm), or if there were any videoTimestamp gaps as well ...

I've only capped from them during Fox Network programming that I can recall, and the timestamp gap errors allways seems to happen during a commercial break at start of a local spot ... I don't recall whether or not I've ever seen that from WRGT, but I've allways wondered if it might involve a "splicer related" issue. They do seem to occur about once or twice per hour, on average. Oftentimes in the past, the timestamp gaps occured at the same time they cut to a "update" from the Fox19 newsdesk, or a Fox19 promo graphic of some sort ... Tonight though, it was right at the beginning of a local commercial ...

For a time, I recall I was also getting quite frequent timestamp gaps from WKEF-DT (average every 7 to 10 minutes or so), and I haven't capped anything from them for a long time, but I think I recall those "going away" at some point ...

The timestamp gaps don't generally seem to be a problem, and I'm not sure WHICH timecode info M2R is reporting on (PTS I think) --- Except I have ran into a problem with them and some software I had used for demuxing, and involving keeping things in sync after demuxing to Elementary streams for editing with certian software, or for remuxing, such as after reencoding video/audio with different codecs, or resizing/reencoding to DVD video ... But, if I use other software for various pre-processing tasks(such as before reencoding) -- such as using VRD+ for editing and demux to Es's --- There doesn't seem to be a problem with the timestamp gaps, Including later on after reencoding/muxing .... And, I've never noticed an issue at all with the timestamp gaps regarding decoding the TS for Playback, or if they were there, If I had capped to a MPEG2 Program container(such as *.DVR-MS or *.MPG) rather than TS ...

Other "glitches" In stations streams(confirmed they weren't issues on "my end")I can recall seeing(including recently) mostly involve occasional apparent video encoding errors from those stations in the area using Flexicoders -- Errors with(usually) no "discontinuity" errors associated with them ....

In other words, I could be wrong, but I don't think "in general" that some of the video encoding errors we are seeing that are NOT associated with discontinuities in the TS from WLWT are all that uncommon, Nor do I think they are 'generally' a problem -- Continuity or TEI Errors in the TS (not due to issues on user end) though I think are more of a concern, especially if they are occuring in the Video or audio streams ....

So the question is - are any of you able to get the local digital HD stations on TWC without a TWC set-top box?

I saw this post above amidst all the capping stuff... Splicer gave you a quick answer, but to follow-up... what you are getting is called "Clear QAM".

QAM 101 (which I am sure some here will add to) :
Most (if not all) new digital TVs now have a QAM tuner. It's unencrypted digital stations that are sent through cable, typically just your "locals" and often things like community access channels. And (although I couldn't point you to a document), from all I have read, it is legally required to be sent (at least the "locals"). Note that some places actually have "typically cable only" channels that are unencrypted as well... and if a premium channel like Showtime or HBO or whatever has a "free preview weekend", often they send those programs out unencrypted, so you might get those channels through QAM for a weekend.

The issue you had at first, is because QAM typically takes a decent amount of signal strength to work. Unlike standard analog cable, where you can sometimes split it a bunch of times with no noticeable signal loss (YMMV), you need a pretty strong signal for QAM. So that explains why it worked for you when you added that amp.

As Splicer said above, the cable guys were probably trying to make a sale... although I would not be surprised if there are actually some who simply don't know that QAM exists (without diverging into a separate rant about the knowledge and qualifications of today's workers, in any field, blah blah blah, remember when people who worked at a store actually knew something about the product they sold, blah blah blah... :p ). And I can almost promise you that a customer service rep at the cable company (if you tried to call and ask) would have no clue (and if they did, wouldn't admit it).

Anyway, with proper amplification and signal strength, any TV set with a Clear QAM tuner can get local channels in digital (HD if available) without a box. It's just that, well, it's not really in the cable company's best financial interests to tell you about that, is it? :D

Another thing to keep in mind if you decide to stick with basic cable and the QAM: sometimes (again, YMMV), cable companies move around the QAM channel locations. I see comments about this on other boards that I read, although I don't know if local Cincinnati cable companies do it much or not. I have to figure it is their way of making QAM a "pain in the rear" and trying to coerce users into paying for digital cable... they legally have to send the signal, but there's probably no law saying they can't move the channels around and make it a hassle... anyway, if you someday stop getting QAM, try doing a channel search and it's likely they just moved.

Although I have never heard about how reliable this is, you can try searching here for a listing of what channels you should get... enter your ZIP, then scroll down until you see "qam256" in the left column:

I noticed that WCVN-DT (KET1) has no (PSIP) guide data today. The other KET stations do have it.

After making over half a dozen calls to the KET folks in Lexington about the problem with a "postage sized picture" (bars on the top, bottom and both sides) I noticed that they have finally figured out how to give us a full screen. Over the last few weeks I went round and round with them about the problem. They INSISTED that PBS was the problem. This week, when the same program was playing on WCVN and WCET, I called them and FINALLY convinced someone that it was their problem (I even sent them a screen capture of their picture and WCET's). At least they got the problem fixed. Now they just have those stupid black bars (top and bottom only) when they are doing some of their promos.

Is anyone else in Cincinnati having major issues with Time Warner's On-Demand and switched cable channels (like CNN Int and some of the new HD channels that are switched)? December and early January were horrible for these services. After the last of the new HD channels (SciFi HD) were added things became really stable until last week. Now the On-Demand service is only functional for a few hours a day. Their tech support is totally useless on these issues and denied that Switched Cable even exists. Ugh.

Well, since you brought it up, see my post in the TWC HDTV thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=15555430#post15555430). I generally don't post about TWC here since certain "prolific posters" seem to think this thread should be for OTA HD only.

I don't use on demand but have noticed that the new HD channels on SDV I have attempted to watch suffer from frequent and severe macroblocking with occasional dropouts of both video and audio. As noted in the linked post and confirmed by you, TWC "support" is useless.

I have tried roughly 7 different interfaces and I can't seem to get any of them to tune all the local HD stations. For instance, WinTV6 gets zero, Wintv7 gets all the locals EXCEPT WKRCDT, Vista media center gets all but WCETDT, etc.

My best encounter was BeyondTV which only received all Local HD feeds via QAM after I adjusted an ini setting to make it try to tune each station for a longer period of time. I had to ditch it because it took forever to convert to a burnable DVD file. I'm not quite ready to hook a computer directly to the TV as a Media center but when I do I will revisit BTV.

Sorry Bubster...I am not at all familiar with the PC tuner cards...But it sounds as if there is an incompatability issue between the cards you are using and TW QAM signal...If you get one channel then in theory you should get them all...I can't see an amp helping much if at all unless the channels you are receiving are weak...

gerhard911
02-16-09, 08:18 PM
I am going to have disagree with Splicer on "if you get one channel then in theory you should get them all". The signal strength and quality varies quite widely between TWC QAM channels. I noticed this with the QAM tuner in my Hannspree LCD and confirmed it using the HD-Homerun Configuration utility that shows both signal strength and quality.

In fact, adding an amplifier will most likely solve your problem. It did mine and also a friend's. I would recommend an Electroline drop amplifier (http://www.electroline.com/en/products/drop_amplifiers/eda/index.html) or similar unit that provides the return path for two way cable communications.

If you are currently employing any splitters, replacing them with a multiple port drop amp would be ideal, otherwise just use a single port amp. You can generally find these on ebay for attractive $ or Google for a number of online retailers.

Thats fine if you want to disagree with me...As I stated I am not familiar with PC tuners...:)

But just what are you disagreeing with...I did say "in theory" and actually that is true...Now whether or not that is an actuality is another story...;)

Now the Amelia Headend QAM I receive the signals are all consistently in the same range of each other...But you do have a good point about using a drop amp that supports the reverse path...Though drop amps without that feature are few and far between it certainly is not out of the realm of possibility that the first amp he used did not have reverse capabilities...

I don't even know where to begin and I don't have time to address all of the inaccuracies and spin present in this article.

After hours of trial and error, Joe Gorman of Finneytown says reception improves if he elevates his leg, toward the antenna, while sitting in his favorite chair."You have to do all these contortions, like it's 1955," says Gorman, 54. "This is ridiculous."
Do you see people with satellite dishes sitting on their coffee tables? No, because it wouldn't work well, right? Put up a proper antenna and stop complaining. If you don't know how, call TNT Picture Co and have them do it for about $150 including the antenna itself.

"It's a mess for some people who get their TV over the air," says Elvin Stepp, a University of Cincinnati electrical and computer engineering technology professor.Really... is it? Is it because of flaws in digital technology or because of lack of education and proper set up of the end-user?

Kerry Gray, 49, of Hamilton receives the best DTV picture with his rabbit ears on the living-room floor. But he doesn't consistently get digital Channels 12 and 19.Hmm... bad reception with rabbit ears on a living room floor... who would have thought that?

Analog TV pictures can have "ghosts" caused by reflected signals. Digital viewers get a perfect digital picture or nothing, because the multiple digital signals "cancel each other out," explains Joe Martinelli, WCPO-TV (Channel 9) engineering director.I hope that Kiesewetter misquoted Martinelli, because if not it would be quite scary knowing someone who said that the digital signals "cancel each other out" is a chief engineer at a local station...

The North Carolina test six months ago also showed that digital signals do not travel as far as analog, Klein says.
Engineers say digital TV is more difficult to receive than analog because digital doesn't tolerate reflections from metal or moisture.
Not true.

The Feist family in Burlington tried three indoor antennae:confused: Antennas.

Stepp predicts many people will get fed up "fiddling with their antenna and get cable TV." But not everyone can afford to pay for TV, says Sue Scott, 55, of Fort Mitchell.
"I'm all for progress, but in these tough economic times, it's a shame some people with a perfectly good analog TV will be forced to pay a cable company to watch TV without all these issues," Scott says.
And that uninformed and poor decision will be quite a shame.

The really sad thing is that someone, somewhere, gave these people the idea that rabbit ears sitting on the floor should be all they need, and if that doesn't work, then b!tch to the local media.

And all the media does is report the issues (as if they are all assumed "legit") rather than printing explanations for "why", and ways to fix it. If the Enquirer and local news websites would print an FAQ on how to get good reception (some basic antenna "theory"), rather than just stories of misery, maybe everyone would be better off.

hey guys - I hope you can help...

====================================================

I am in the Maineville area, with TWC, formerly Adelphi.

We receive about 25 or so HDTV (QAM) channels, without actually counting.

Our house had about seven daisy chained drops off the cable that were added over the years with various grades of coax..

My wife's office area had the worst (Qam) channel reception. New VIsio HDTV in her office for Christmas and it only found about five (qam) channels.

So, I ran new coax from several drops and homed them all back to the distribution point in the basement and eliminated a few Cable splitters and All the rooms now get all the ( Qam) channels on TWC cable, without the set top box.

I have an rf amp on the longest run that goes to the kitchen.

Why not just say what the call letters are then, rather than keep us guessing?

It's apparently broadcast on a sideband of one of the local public radio stations. I also just checked WGUC and WVXU HD radio streams, didn't hear it there.

Another way you can listen to it is to use the "record PID" function of TSreader, select the PID at address 0x002a, choose "record to a single file" ... (you may need to rename extension to *.ac3 ) ..... Close TSreader or Click on "record PID" again to stop the recording .... Then you can open it in MPC (using it's internal AC3 decoder at least, and Other players may or not work) and listen to it ... Although, you might want to listen to just right channel only, as I just got test tone out of Left channel using that method ....

I haven't listened long enough to hear a ID from a local radio station, but All I've heard from it so far is :

"You're Listening to Radio Reading Services Of Greater Cincinnati a Division of the Cincinnati Association for The Blind And Visually impaired"

Here is their website :

http://www.cincyblind.org/radioreading.htm

In one spot it says :

Audio access to local and selected national newspapers and magazines which are heard on WRRS, our radio station, or by telephone.

Note : WRRS is *NOT* a licensed AM or FM radio station in this area. There is a WRRS-LP (FM) in Pittsfield, MA, licensee is "TALKING INFORMATION CENTER, INC."

It also says this on their website :

The broadcast is carried on a side band of a Cincinnati public radio station and can be heard within a 50-mile radius of downtown Cincinnati. Broadcasts are also carried on cable TV and on closed circuit TV systems in hospitals and senior facilities.

Buckeyes fan, it sounds like you got a tech who wasn't quite educated on the TWC QAM signal. At least here in Fairfield, there are quite a few local feeds broadcast in HD that you don't need a set top box for. It's only when you get into the cable channels like HGTV, Discover, and National Geographic that you need the boxes for HD content.

It could be longer, but March 3 would be the earliest I'd think .....

On their "Notification of Termination of Analog Service by February 17,2009" form (filed Feb 9 with FCC), they checked "yes" for the following question :

Will you provide nightlight programming for a minimum of two weeks following analog termination?

We need a scorecard to keep track of the changes due to the extension. "Nightlight Service" date... "Analog Transmitter Shutdown" date...

Has anyone heard about the status of the low-power and translator changes that were supposed to happen? W36DG was supposed to flash cut tonight (it's still broadcasting analog). And is WOTH was going to go ahead and turn off analog 25?

Nitewatchman
02-18-09, 12:29 AM
W36DG's Digital Flash Cut CP (If they use it) doesn't expire until 10/19/2009 ...

If WOTH 25 analog is currently on air, It's news to me as I haven't seen them for a while (a couple of weeks or so), and they were operating with STA (lower antenna height/lower power) and were weaker since the digital came up until they disappared here a couple of weeks ago or so ago ...

Keep in mind, the digital transition for Full service stations doesn't apply to LP's ... While LP's *can* go digital, they don't have to/don't have to shut off analog signal, like Full service stations do by June 12 (or whenever, LOL ...) ....

By the way, Dayton LP and ION affiliate WRCX-LP 40 was just granted a CP to improve their signal a bit (significant change in antenna height/bit of a power increase) ... They've Also been off air the past few days, I don't know why ....

Nightlight means keeping the analog transmitter on and broadcasting a message telling the viewer to get digital tuner. The shutdown date would be when that service would terminate, and the analog tuner is actually turned off for real.

From John Kiesewetter's blog (http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?category=PluckPersona&U=5c49394b12564ab6832411d82ad3a991&plckController=PersonaBlog&plckScript=personaScript&plckElementId=personaDest&plckPersonaPage=BlogViewPost&plckPostId=Blog%3a5c49394b12564ab6832411d82ad3a991Post%3aba3 a1a3d-7bb6-41c3-aef7-7adf3e963021&sid=sitelife.cincinnati.com"):

"The National Association of Broadcasters says some markets which dropped analog today have only received 150 or 200 calls. So either they're under-reporting the [sic] sitatuion, or Cincinnati had many more people not prepared."

"...this proves that some elderly viewers are perplexed by the technology change, and it's a real issue here. And it may be a bigger concern here than elsewhere, if Ch 64 is getting maybe 1,000 calls (by now?), and other cities are only getting a couple hundred calls?"

Remember back in December or January when the Ohio Association of Broadcasters ran the statewide test and there were more calls in the Cincinnati market than Cleveland and Columbus combined? We're seeing this same pattern again.

I figured that once WSTR stopped regular programming on their analog channel, it would boost the number of people who haven't gotten their sets ready. (An unprepared OTA viewer loses one analog channel and it's not the end of the world, but it's a definite sign that action must be taken soon.) But I'm surprised at the number of people asking for help so far!

So what's Cincinnati's problem? The hills? More elderly folks per capita that get their TV over the air? Stubbornness and procrastination? (I was practically begging a friend to go ahead and set up her converter box. She had it for a few months and still hadn't hooked it up yet!)

jimp2244
02-19-09, 08:01 AM
It seemed that there were very few calls from people saying "what the hell is going on?" and that most of the calls were from people trying to hook up their converter boxes and asking for assistance. So at least it seems most people were at least "aware" that they needed to do something. But now the brunt of the "customer service" required to help people that call in is going to WSTR. When the other stations turn off analog there will most likely be far fewer calls to those stations.

With the lineup that WSTR has I'm really surprised that they got the number of calls that they reported. Either the numbers were "enhanced" (my guess) or there are a lot more people that like "junk TV" than I thought. I looked at their lineup from 9 AM to Midnight and there is not even one program that I would consider watching. I just think this proves that "one person's junk is another person's entertainment".

For the Cincinnati and Dayton markets:

64 stopped their analog programming and went to the "nightlight service" late night on February 17. We don't know when its analog transmitter will be shut down for good, but we're guessing sometime in March.

54 (and 52) and the remaining stations (and translators?) in the KET network will stop on April 15.

7 will stop on May 3.

The remaining stations will stop on June 12, though there is speculation that the remaining stations will shut off on or after May 20 when the network sweeps finish up.

OK, so you have an antenna that can pull in signals from about 45 miles on VHF and 30 miles on UHF. If it's in your attic, you're losing a lot of your signal already. And your "cheap" amp may be doing more harm than good if it's attempting to amplify VHF signals that may be showing characteristics of multipath since your antenna is in your attic.

Is it a preamp where one part (the actual amplifier) is mounted at the antenna and the other part (the part that provides power to the amp) is plugged in closer to your set? Or is it a single piece? How do things look if you take it completely out of your setup?

P.S. We find sites like tvfool.com (http://www.tvfool.com/) more useful than antennaweb. Give it a try. I think you'll like it. :D

You may have answered your own question with that statement right there. If Columbus is that strong from your location, perhaps analog 10 is interfering.

And if analog 10 from Columbus is interfering, there may not much you can do to stop it. You could try a more directional high-VHF-only antenna and aim it towards Cincinnati. However, if you notice your TV Fool plot, almost all of the channels outside of your primary market (Dayton) could exhibit co-channel or adjacent-channel interference under the right circumstances. After all of the full-power analog transmitters are shut off, there will be fewer channels that could interfere with each other, especially those on high-VHF.

I'll answer for him. I don't think he ever said he was able to pull in columbus stations. He was just stating his happiness with the tivo tuner. As for me, I can pick up station from CMH and I'm in wilmington. I can get 6.1 ABC and 10.1 CBS, and perhaps some others... And I'm pointed toward Cincy. Not bad!

I believe the "postage stamp" issue occuring during some programming on some PBS stations currently is due to PBS recently discontinuing its SD feeds for the primary PBS program service (not create, world/etc). That program material is now sent by PBS via an HD feed, which of course is 16x9, and therefore, 4x3 programming will have pillarbars in addition to letterboxing if a 4x3 broadcast format is being utilized.

Implementation of AFD in the "right places" may be one way they might be able to solve this issue.

I can't stand the "postage sized" picture either.

I called KET on their "customer" line (800 432-0951). After a lot of transfers and "run around" from their programming department I got to talk to someone in engineering. He said (as Nightwatchman posted) that the "problem" is related to a change that PBS made. It caught a lot of affiliates "off guard" and some don't have the proper equipment to make the picture full screen. He said that KET1 should have the problem fixed in March.

Until they do I'll watch WCET for most of the PBS programs. A lot of the time they show the same program at the same time or a little latter than KET does.

PBS is now feeding 5 HD feeds for the NPS service. They are also upconverting the SD material to HD, compounding the problem. Since the receivers do not yet support AFD and not all content is center protected, its a real mess. The SD receivers can downconvert from HD on the fly but you have to pick how its formatted. Some stations are using up to three receivers per feed to minimize the impact (1 HD, 1 SD letterbox, 1 SD center cut) on air.

We're still upgrading the plant and believe me we don't like it either but we are trying to figure out the best way to handle it.

So does this mean the PBS shows that were airing "first run" in SD (and the HD version like two weeks later) are now going to get the HD version up first?

Hurray - Finally! :D :D :D

BTW, speaking of PBS programming... anyone watch "Live from the Artists' Den"? Anyone else noticed that they keep showing the Jacob Dylan episode and labeling it "Ingrid Michaelson" in the EPG? I've seen the Dylan show (which was excellent), labeled correctly, but our SageTV keeps recording the "Ingrid" show and it's always Dylan.

I am hoping this is something at PBS and not a Zap2It issue...

Thanks for the information.

I don't understand what KET needs to figure out (or do you mean technically?). Viewers want a full sized picture on SD channels (like KET1) all the time. It seems WCET has figured it out. I haven't seen a postage sized picture on any their PBS programs. Whatever they are doing KET need to do. Maybe KET need to talk to WCET.

It SEEMS like the problem is really PBS. If ALL the PBS stations are seeing the same problem why can't the local PBS stations convince them that THEY need to fix it? PBS (and especially KET) needs to understand that we have over 100 choices of channels to watch and many of us aren't going to watch a postage sized picture NO MATTER what the program content is.

Trip in VA

PBS moved over to a fully-HD distribution system, so the stations have to capture that, and any widescreen content has to be widescreen (since PBS didn't require content to maintain 4:3 safe areas). They end up capturing it as a postage stamp if it's 4:3 content in the HD window.

I mean, unless you don't want any PBS-HD...

We are commissioning a new digital plant here including 4 master control systems. We use one operator per shift for all MC duties and he also ingests material into the servers for playback. What we have to figure out is how to automate the process so that the format converters and scalers shift with each show. CET is a whole lot simpler than KET...

I'm sorry you feel that we are not moving fast enough but I can assure you we are working toward a solution.

William,

Thanks again for the information and sorry to hear about the loss of funds and staff. From the technical problems at KET it appears that they kept too many "paper pushers" and not enough technical people.

I have heard a lot of complaints and I'm sure KET has as well. Hopefully, KET (and WPTO) will get their problems resolved soon.

Just talked to the CE at CW26 (WBDT) in Dayton.

1.) Moving to DT26 from current DT18 on or before June 14th. Firm date to be "announced" on both analog and digital station (CW 26)

2.) Will immediatley increase power to 50kw from current 35kw which should help a little in northern Cincinnati suburbs. Note: They have already "tested" this switch earlier this month. Moving from digital 18 to 28 takes care of the Lexington, KY. / Lima, OH. analog "overalap" issues.

3.) Still waiting for FCC approval (application) to increase power on DT26 from 50kw to 770kw. At that point they will be in the "big league" with Dayton's other powerful digital stations - channels 7 & 2 and cover most of the Cincinnati DMA with a decent signal. My thoughts are that this will be approved since the FCC is keen on people getting good digital signals, in particular due to all of the negative "press" regarding DTV reception issues.

Good news is that we may finally be able to watch CW programming in HD.:)

Stay tuned!

Thanks for passing along the info Ncincy - Was hoping we would already be watching their digital on 26 by now, although doesn't really matter for me, as I get them just fine on 18, here ;) -- Update: Oh, you can of course edit your post and fix the typos if you want .... Generally, FWIW, though, personally, I've found it best to thank folks for corrections and let anything else just "roll off"(unless it's just plain wrong info/etc), so to speak ... There's no need to get personal about this stuff, it usually doesn't turn out well ....

Anyway, I wonder if the same CE is there now that I enjoyed talking to a couple of times about 4~5 years or so ago --- Back then, and for a while, They did "The Daily Buzz" (which is syndicated on many stations, I think all the ACME stations have it, WBQC ran it, or at least did) In Dayton, I think at their Studios In Miamisburg .... I watched that show a few times when they were In Dayton, and rather enjoyed it ....

Anyway, WBDT-DT's directional antenna(according to what it says on FCC site, anyway) results in about 1.5~2KW ERP being squirted towards Cincinnati Currently, and yet there are folks in Fairfield(Plughplover reported he receives them with a INDOOR antenna from Fairfield area) and Sharonville area which hae reported receiving them just fine ....

Think I've posted on this before(probably in Dayton thread though), but the 50KW ERP post-transition CP (and the app they sent for it) doesn't seem to indicate a change in the antenna pattern. Unless it is inaccurate info on FCC, which is possible, perhaps even likely if they will be using a different transmit antenna on 26, such as the one currently used by the analog station.

But there would be a BIG change/increase in power For cincy (by 20dB+ instead of around 1dB increase with the 50kW if the DA stays the same) with the 770KW ERP operation if it is granted, which should help a lot of folks get them who can't get them now, or those who won't/can't put up a decent outdoor antenna --- which is usually a very good idea in most cases, given for example our system for OTA, analog or digital was designed and intended for use with outdoor directional receive antenna ...

Also, While analog CCI from a 1st adjacent channel analog station theoretcially shouldn't be much of an issue, in the "Real world" and regarding some receivers at least, and involving some locations(particularly near WXIX tower or in N KY where you have to aim through it for WBDT), I'd guess not having a blow torch analog right next door on 19 should help for some folks as well ....

Just a FYI, WLEX 18 Lexington's digital is on 39 and will remain there post transition. I'm not sure what the situation is for the Lima LP on 18 ...

Oh, I'd think probably the biggest potential concern regarding whether or not The power increase/maximization to 770KW will or won't be granted by FCC I'd think might probably involve WLKY (CBS) Lexington, their DT is on 26 currently, and will remain there post transition ... There's a pretty good null in the pattern shown in the CP app towards them, though, hopefully it will be enough for FCC ... If not, seems like they are defintely interested in improving their signal, in which case I'd think it's likely they'd be able to work something out which wouldn't be too much different than what They've asked for ....

The following article describes the next set of dates for the DTV conversion. However, it looks very confusing. So if I got something wrong, please don't shoot the messenger. ;)

From http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/179704-FCC_Unveils_Plans_For_Second_Wave_Of_DTV_Transitions.php:

March 17 - the date by which all broadcasters must inform the FCC of when they do plan to pull the plug on analog if it is before June 12.
April 16 - the deadline for filing updated DTV Transition Status Reports that outline those transition plans (to stop their analog broadcasts before June 12).
April 17 - the date where analog transmitters that have been running the nightlight service can shut down.
June 12 - analog programming ceases, except for those running nightlight.
July 12 - the remaining analog transmitters are shut down.

Nitewatchman
03-02-09, 07:13 PM
Yes, There are also some issues addressed in recent NPRM regarding some issues, including regarding the filings by March 17 with a comment period which ends 3/4, and FCC saying it'll have the rules/etc. involved in place(probably an R&O) by no later than March 13 ... Meaning, we won't see any filings/analog shut off notifications(or updated Form 387's) until after FCC adopts the necessary rules involved ....

There's another significance to the April 16 date as well in addition to the updated DTR's --- in that it would be the earliest date early analog shut off's which haven't already happened would be allowed to occur, per the following quote from R&O (document includes the NPRM as well) adopted by FCC Feb 20, 2009 :

32. Accordingly, only notifications filed prior to March 17, 2009, and in compliance with the procedures adopted in this docket will be accepted. Stations should not file 30-day advance notifications of intent to terminate analog service, and will not be authorized to terminate analog service prior to June 12, 2009 based upon the filing of any notification submitted before we finalize and release the analog service termination procedures. In the companion NPRM, we tentatively conclude that stations may terminate no earlier than April 16, 2009, to provide at least 30 days from the notification date for all parties to prepare and educate consumers. As required by the DTV Delay Act, we will establish final analog service termination procedures no later than Friday, March 13, 2009 (which date is 30 days after enactment of the DTV Delay Act).

They did a great job. (Most of it was in HD, for starters :D ) Most of John's reports were recycled, but there was a good amount of information (for example, pointing out problems with signals in Terrace Park and around Harrison). They emphasized using the right antenna. The segment that involved upgrading that outdoor antenna in Deer Park certainly made an impact in my mind that in lots of cases, a more traditional outdoor antenna setup may be the only way to receive consistent DTV signals.

Also, the scroll on the bottom indicated that they may switch in early June before the June 12 deadline (so they can upgrade their transmitting antenna).

As a whole though I am impressed that at least one local station is trying to educate the viewing public...The majority of what they were saying was correct...Matarese saying that "if" the coupon program were to be re-funded then more coupons would be issued...

"Fear mongering" is quite correct. I have NEVER seen a market that over hypes the weather the way the Cincinnati stations do. Coverage of severe weather is one thing but it is clear that the local stations don't use a lot of common sense with their coverage.

There is not a whole lot that we can do other than call the stations' GM and complain about missing the network programs. I don't think that it will do a lot of good but maybe, just maybe, the GM will call some of the weather people on the carpet and tell them to use better judgment will their "break ins" which, quite often, turns into long, VERY annoying, network interruptions.

"Fear mongering" is quite correct. I have NEVER seen a market that over hypes the weather the way the Cincinnati stations do.
Actually, it is common these days. I lived in Birmingham, AL for a while, and it was even worse there. In Birmingham, every storm that came to the area would pass through Tuscaloosa first (about 45 minutes west/southwest). So as soon as there was a bad weather warning in Tuscaloosa, all the Birmingham stations would jump to all-weather, all-the-time, until the last cell passed from the far eastern edge of the B'ham viewing area. And since Tuscaloosa was a good 45-min drive (and storms don't move at 60-70 mph), this often meant 2-3 hours straight of full weather coverage. Lemme tell you, I know all I ever want to know about "hook echoes".

The worst part was that, probably 75% of the time, the storms would pass through Tuscaloosa and then go either north or south of Birmingham, not even affecting the majority of the "greater B'ham" area. AND of course, the only other programming that you could pick up in Birmingham was...from Tuscaloosa... so they were on "all weather" too.

Yup, the sky is falling.... Why do the stations feel like they need to repeat the same weather crap over and over? Is our society so pitiful we need this babysitting?
If one station didn't cover the storm, and something bad happened, all the other stations would jump all over the "when xxxx happened, WE WERE THERE and WE WERE ON TOP OF IT and THEY WEREN'T", and no station wants to risk losing those precious viewers who might change channels to watch the station with the "better" weather coverage. Especially these days, when local channels are fighting just to exist.

What I would love to see is some station NOT switch to weather, and then when nothing big happened, run an advertisement saying "WE DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME". :D Yeah, it will never happen, but wouldn't it be great if it did?

Again not quite... SAP (which is an analog subcarrier) will die with analog. In DTV you can run multiple audio services, but if the crawl tells you where to tune.. it still won't work for the visually impaired. Likewise and audio message doesn't work for the deaf...

If a station did not cover weather alerts at all they could be in trouble for not serving the public interest plus the legal issues if someone was watching their station and was not warned of a deadly situation such as an impending tornado.

I was 10 years old in April 1974 when the twisters struck.. one wiped out a barn 5 less than 50 ft from my house.

Some things are more important than television programming..

You people seem to gather what a joke the weather break-ins are in this city. I have been preaching this for years only to have people on this board....aka "nighwatchman" feed me some BS about "the public deserves to know!"

Give me a break. I missed the entire second half of Duke vs North Carolina to watch the weather guy circle the same little storm system over and over. I also got to see a nice graphic of the size of all potential hail that could be headed my way and hail that did fall in SE Indiana back in 1947.

This isnt the normal break in.......Weather dude is on the screen for the entire second half! Im thinking this better be serious this time because I have seen this crap all too many times in the past. So I wait and I wait and I wait for this death storm to approach.

I look outside and what do I see? Dogs running, kids playing, neighborhood barbecues and rainbows .......for the duration of the night

Somebody really needs to clue these stations in because this is absolutely and utterly ridiculous.

Didn't realize that SAP will die with analog...Interesting...However a tone would work for the blind by telling them to go to another channel...Likewise a crawl would tell the deaf to tune to that channel also...Don't need SAP for an audio tone and a crawler isn't dependant on analog so yeah...It 'could' work and rather well...This would cover legal and moral issues for all involved...

I remember April 3, 1974 vividly as if it were yesterday...I also was 10 years old and that day left quite the impact on me and not just because we had softball sized hail...Glad you weren't injured...Did you see the barn being destroyed or just the aftermath??? That would have been damn impresive...but scary as hell...

Since cable/sat companies may not carry that weather specific service channel, its still a liability issue. Same way for Directed Channel Change in DTV, you can tell the receiver to change to a specific sub channel BUT there is no way to change it back to the original service. It would work if you ran two subs but not three.

Its considered part of the public interest obligation that allows stations to have a license. The FCC takes a very stern line when it comes to public safety especially if the station chooses to ignore a deadly situation.

First post did not show up for some odd reason??? So I am recalling form Memory of what I asked
First Question will VHF Low Disappear after Analog shuts off reason I am asking is because should I buy a Winegard HD 7698P 7-69 or a HD8200U 2-69?

Weight will be less on the 7698P Vs the 8200U and 54" Wide VS 110" Wide
Since I cannot get Any Cincinnati Channels now ( Hopefully it will change after Analog Shutoff ) or maybe it is my Antenna Setup. I have a Philips SDV9011K/17 or a SDV7700K/17 whichever is the Biggest of the 2.

Had a Great Radio Shack VU190 until the Icestorm a few years ago. Then a CM3671 alot of people likes a CM3671 but it was so so not as great as the Radio Shack one.

With the Wind being up and Chilly Weather now for probably a few more weeks I am not going to do any Antenna maintence.

Second Question since I can Watch WCPO Newscasts Via Internet/Computer Tell me what pieces I need to get from Radio Shack 26-1264 will be first a VGA Splitter at the Tower or before the Monitor. I do not want to drill big holes on the Floors, Walls etc due to the BIG Head on the VGA Cable any way to adapt it down from a VGA to Something slimmer like a USB, HDMI or Coax etc. to run it 30 or so feet to the TV so I can watch it on a 42" TV and go back to a VGA Connector at the TV. I only have 1 HDMI connection. And do not want to Tie Up Coax, RCA Cables. And the VGA Connection has no use nothing hooked up to it. OR go Wireless from the Split at the Computer Tower in my Bedroom to the 42" TV in the Living Room. What Components ( Model #'s ) do I need to ask for?

An FCC fine vs. being found liable for someone's injury or death or two entirely different things. Can you imagine the lawsuits if someone could claim that a broadcasters failure to warn them of a weather situation caused his or her weather related injury? Its simply not the law.

Emergency Alert System weather alerts (formerly emergency broadcast system) are optional for a station to air. However, it is strongly encouraged that this weather information is passed along, and stations have discretion in the manner they pass on this information. See http://www.sbe.org/eas/Procedures.pdf

It is certainly not required for a station to have a continuous break in programming for extended coverage. Simply passing the information along, by crawl or otherwise, is going to be sufficient.

But the FCC can pull a station's license if they're shown to not be "serving the public interest."

National alerts (e.g., from President Obama) are different than weather alerts.

Again, show me a single case where a station was fined or lost its license for failure to continually interrupt regular programming for weather information.

First Question will VHF Low Disappear after Analog shuts off

Only a handful of stations (fifty-something?) will remain or transition to low-VHF in the next few months. None of the stations in the immediate Cincinnati market will be broadcasting on low-VHF after analog shutoff. So a high-VHF/UHF combination antenna (or one high-VHF antenna combined with one UHF antenna) will suffice.

Since I cannot get Any Cincinnati Channels now ( Hopefully it will change after Analog Shutoff ) or maybe it is my Antenna Setup.

What does the signal locator on tvfool.com (http://www.tvfool.com/) say about your location? Perhaps you're in a bad signal area and need a more powerful antenna and setup to get the Cincinnati stations.

^It was probably just a temporary decoding issue on Rob's end. I can't remember off the top of my head but I know several stations have their channels say on 35-3 and 35-4 and they get remapped to 5-1 and 5-2. I can't remember if WLWT is this way or not... If it is, he could have just been seeing the raw channel number before his TV "fixed" it by reading the PSIP re-map info.

Speaking of WLWT I have not heard anything on the datastream error issue in a while.

Speaking of WLWT I have not heard anything on the datastream error issue in a while. They still have the issue - seems the resolution is moving very slowly. According to their engineer, it's related to an interaction of 2 pieces of equipment in the broadcast chain, but they're working with the manufacturer to figure it out and isolate which of those is the real root cause. Fortunately although there are errors, they are pretty small and sometimes not even noticeable (like a few pixel breakup in the corner), so it's not so bad...

Well, from East Africa I am surprised you get anything from TWC at all :D

They should be sending all of the local digital stations (5 / 9 / 12 / 16 / 19 / 48 / 54 / 64) in clear QAM. This should include all subchannels except 9.2. That is what I receive.

However, I know of multiple cases where signal levels as provided by TWC are too weak for many of these to be tuned by some QAM tuners without additional amplification.

Yikes, I guess it matters what part of town you are in for the QAM lineup? TSReader shows 19.2 on 85.103 here in Fairfield. I wonder how much my location has to do with my Hauppage 2250 tuner woes. I can get all QAM channels fine on 2 televisions but on my Computer it's a completely different story. Any apps I've tried all seem to not tune one station or the other with the notable exception of TSReader.

Bubster,

As originally posted there were (at least) two typos in the chart :o

My This-TV entry should have been labeled 85.103 (I had it shown on the same 85.2 as WXIX 19.1) and it is 19.2, not 19.1.

I edited the post to make these corrections.

Ch 12 and Dayton's Ch 7 will air the same lineup. All four of these games will be in HDTV on Chs 12 & 7 Thursday:

12:20 p.m.: Butler-LSU

2:30 p.m. Northern Iowa-Purdue

7:10 p.m.: Michigan-Clemson

9:45 p.m.: Western KY-Illinois.

CW/Local 12.2 (Time Warner Ch 20, Insight Ch 25) will air these two afternoon games in standard definition:

12:30 p.m.: Texas A&M-BYU

2:45 p.m.: Maryland-California

correct syntaxDoes anyone publish, either on-line or in print, a "TV Guide" for digital programming that shows all the sub-channels?

At this point, I have to go to each stations website and then look at each individual sub-channel to get program listings. Even then, one only gets to look at programming one small chunk at a time.

It would be nice to have something like the Enquirer publishes for analog and cable.

Is this a niche that some enterprising person might fill?

This is good news that the next tier of stations (by viewership) is converting in the next six weeks. I guess we can assume that these stations will start nightlight programming at midnight (or 12:01 AM) on these dates and stop their analog signals a few weeks later. (I wonder if the W36DG translator will remain on analog or flash cut on April 16... and if they remain on analog and WKOI shows nightlight programming on RF 43, will W36DG show nightlight programming?)

Here are lists of the 158 stations shutting down before June 12 (http://www.fcc.gov/DA-09-589A2.pdf) and the 927 stations shutting down on June 12 (http://www.fcc.gov/DA-09-589A3.pdf). I believe the PBS station's will not due the nightlight programming. WPTD is changing for r-f channel 58 back to channel 16. The PBS channels are turning off at 1:am not 12:59 pm.

That reminds me of a "scolding" that we got at church a few weeks ago. It seems that contributions are way down and we were "advised" to drop our satellite and cable packages so that we could contribute more to the church.

While Jim isn't telling us to give to his church (or anything else) and we all COULD live without them I think that everyone needs to make their own decisions on what to subscribe to.

jd...NO...those channels are not in the clear...I don't believe he was asking if the channels were "sent in the clear." I am pretty sure he already knew that and he was responding to my signature, and rhetorically asking to make a point. I could be wrong though.

1) Easy, you are probably outnumbered on this board by people who are OTA-only, or at least very pro-OTA. Know your audience.
2) Who's being a "jag" now?

P.S. I never watched PBS before dropping cable/sat. I have discovered that between the many PBS subchannels available in Cincinnati and Dayton, you can find something to replace almost all of your tastes in television. Don't knock it until you try it. ;)

P.P.S. The money I have saved in one year of being OTA-only is about to buy me another new HDTV.

I would subscribe to cable TV too if CableCard on Vista wasn't such a fascist experience.

In other news I bought the Motorola signal booster, but it didn't help much at all with the dropouts on Time Warner (I'm subscribed to Roadrunner but not TV, but I still get the clear QAMs). However, it does seem to be making my OTA reception more stable.

OTA is awesome!

Every sporting event that I can't get OTA is available on www.channelsurfing.net, except the Reds. I live with Marty, Thom, and JB on the radio for that.

(the site might not look like much today because they only update for the current day's games and not much is going on... but they have pretty much anything you want to watch online streaming, and, somehow, legal - check it on a Saturday in the Fall and you'll find about 25-30 college football games, including everything on Fox Sports Regional, CSTV, and all the ESPNs)

Great... I get to see a pixelated mess when I expand it bigger (I have a 110" projected screen, by the way).

Also, it is not legal. Without the express written consent of the networks, the teams involved, and their respective leagues, you cannot rebroadcast it. They get away with it because they don't produce the streams and most likely are not based in this country.

I want to watch sports in HD, in my house... OTA doesn't carry much during the week, doesn't carry as much college football and basketball as I want, and covers no baseball.

Edit: By the way, I do use that site from time to time, but when I use it I am away from home.

I have to wonder about the legality - I can not imagine that they don't have some sort of deal worked out. They are out in the open, easy to find, and have been operating for years. Surely they could have been shut down by now if they were doing something illegal. Also, they have cameras at many arenas throughout the country (college hoops, for example), which are exclusive to them, or else show some sort of feed that no one else gets.

Off-topic ramble, why I think there is more to it:
For example, for my alma mater's games (a small school down south that would NEVER be shown in Cincinnati otherwise, yet I see most of their football and basketball games here), the football games are a direct feed from the stadium scoreboard video (which shows live action plays during each play and replays after each play), and the audio is an overlay of the radio broadcast. During time outs and quarter breaks, the audio reverts to the stadium P.A., so you hear the audio of the commercials showing on the scoreboard (which you are seeing). So there is obviously something "planned" being done there by the people running the website, not just someone bootlegging a network-produced feed. And I can't believe they are slipping some under-the-table money to the stadium scoreboard people to get the feed illegally - our stadium is a large, municipal venue that we don't own, and has way more at stake than to risk something like that. Plus, many different schools have football feeds set up this same way - they couldn't do it everywhere if it were illegal, the NCAA would be all over it.

Similarly, with basketball, the games are a single camera from the midcourt camera platform (same spot a real network would use), but they never zoom, they just pan back and forth from end to end. However, a separate camera shot, which is a continuous, unmoving shot of the scoreboard, is inset in the top-center of the screen. The audio is again our radio broadcast, but during breaks, stays with the radio guys so you can hear them chatting "off mic".

Now, admittedly, a lot of their feeds are direct feeds of CSTV, Fox, or ESPN broadcasts - but quite a lot of them aren't, and are what I just described. That's why I think this is much more than some illegal, overseas, bootlegging action.

pj,

According to the "legal" section of its web site, channelsurfing.net is based out of Italy. Its not legit.

The feeds you are describing are feeds that are made available on a pay-per-view online basis. Good example -- CSTV has a number of games available on its CSTV.com web site. Its feeds produced by the colleges involved combined with the radio feeds. Someone out there streams the game to channelsurfing.net. channelsurfing.net then uses peer 2 peer file sharing to share the streams to everyone else.

As to how its still operating, some countries are more leniant than others on copyright violations. My guess is that channelsurfing.net is simply going to argue that it is providing the links and that the people sharing are the real culprits. This argument might fly in Italy, but it certainly doesn't in the US.

They annoy the heck out of me, too.
If they just were to have a popup every 15-30min for 15seconds, then remove it, I wouldn't grumble so much.

Being from SoCal, I'm not used to the weather pop-ups. Back there, we had games interrupted for the latest car chase.

Well well well...And you guys tld me there were no issues with WLWT...I have been beating my head against a brick wall trying to find the reason for my audio dropouts that happen without rhyme nor reason at completely random intervals...I was beginning to think it was an issue with my LST-3510a...Apparently the continuity errors manifests on the LG as audio dropouts where as on another more recent machine it may manifest itself differently...

The audio dropouts HAVE occured with less frequency of late but does still occur...So I don't think the problem is completely fixed yet...At least not as of a day or 2 ago...

However, based on what you just said I'm guessing that you missed a few pages of discussion on this. Several of us have done coordinated captures of the data stream and run it through analysis. We identified specific times that the problem occured (generally it seemed to happen about twice an hour I believe), and found the errors in the stream. We brought it to the WLWT engineers and they have addressed it with concern from the moment we informed them. They worked with their vendor and believe they have implemented a fix. If you continue to experience the audio drop outs and we don't see the errors in our captures tonight, then we might conclude that they are unrelated... So, I guess if possible, could you watch Life tonight and (without spoiling the episode for me!) let us know if you have the drop outs?

Also sorry if you have mentioned before, but how long do the "drop outs" last? Are they simply blips or do they last more than a second or two?

The audio dropouts HAVE occured with less frequency of late but does still occur...So I don't think the problem is completely fixed yet...At least not as of a day or 2 ago...They told me they "put the final tweaks" on the fix yesterday.

Let me ask you this Jim...How did the continuity errors manifest on your machine??? In other words...what exactly was wrong that made you even bother to do the looking into???On my Samsung DLP it is just a very quick blip in audio and video, but it's so quick that honestly I never noticed it and wouldn't have done anything about it if others hadn't had issues. My BeyondTV DVR recordings were the same way... hardly noticeable if at all.

Running the recorded transport stream throught the mpeg2repair utility for analysis, as suggested by BlueStraw, made it quite clear that we were all seeing the same errors, just experiencing them in different ways.

As everyone here knows...my issue was with audio dropouts when the video remained rock solid...I love my LG again!!! I also love not having to watch WDTN-DT for NBC shows anymore...Never an issue with WDTN-DT...Yes so far it does appear the issue has been resolved, and that's certainly good , especially for you (and I'm sure others) who had worse symptoms.

End of Log Definitely looks 'fixed' to me! That error at the end is something m2r will ALWAYS show, on every cap from every station, so nothing to worry about there. Finally the station with the best local PQ is back to the right quality!

I watch most of my stuff via a PC, and the small 'glitches' typically showed up to me as small picture break-ups. Not enough to be really annoying, but always about 4 per 60 min show and after 2 months I had had enough of them!

Credit to WLWT's engineers here - this was a pretty complex problem due to the interaction between several pieces of equipment in the broadcast chain, and probably not that many viewers complained about such small 'glitches', but they stuck with it, kept those of us who asked 'in the loop', and most importantly fixed it in the end.
