View Full Version : DD DTS Signs Done

Jawhn

I just finished some DIY DD and DTS signs for my theater. Printed the pics on glossy photo paper and used $10.00 certificate frames from Wal-Mart.

I am VERY pleased!:D

BTW: The graphics and letters are very sharp and clear (crappy digital camera).

Stickman .. that particular Comcast link is dead. :(

The one Jahwan posted works fine .. but could change. Suggest those who want these grab them now. THX is fussy about non-authorized use of its logo.

I downloaded them all at work. Will try to put them on a yahoo or picture sharing pages when I get a chance!
I used the comcast logo's for my entrance logos. See link below.

I didn't even know my little signs made it over here! The link shouldn't change now that I have it on my personal web space. And I doubt THX is going to tell people they can't print a sign and put it in their own home. Its not like anyone is making money on free printouts.

Yea, but I'm sure its copyrighted, and in this day and age companies will sue even the little guy over a stupid little copyright dispute if they find out you are infringing.

Fair use is starting to not exist. Of course, here, you are redistributing their copyrighted material, and that is the entire reason copyright exists...

[edit] I was composing this message at the same time spearce was sending his. Sorry for being redundant.

*no flames please*

Having worked with THX on the logo issues in the past, I think the bigger issue is posting unauthorized logos for the public to download. I guess it's kinda like the whole music sharing thing... but with logos. Most companies are very picky about accurate representation of their logos and frown upon deviations from logo designs as specified in their Corporate Standards Manuals (these are books that corporations pay big bucks for which dictate any and every usage of the Corporate Identity).

Please don't read me wrong here, I'm not trying to be a "bad guy". I am all about DIY and I encourage everyone to be creative in the process of creating and decorating your theater room. As far as I know, THX has never gone after anyone for this (not that they would even know if someone was doing this for their own personal theater room), but I personally would never publish a logo for public assess without permission from the copyright holder.

Hello.

Just wanted to say thanks for the links to the images. I was looking for something to spice up the entrance/staies to my theater room...and framing these images certainly did the trick. 3 frames @ the Dollar Store=$3. Best bang for the bang accessory I've purchased.
Thanks again.

One more thing... (again, I'm writing this message discourage, but to advise). This is a hard topic to write about and not come off as being a jerk.

While I was looking at your page, I noticed your text at the bottom which reads something like,

"All images and text are the property of Tim Krug. (c) 2003 Tim Krug."

Ouch! This is what could really get you in trouble. I'm sure you spent allot of time creating the artwork, but it's really owned by someone else. My suggestion (humble as it is), is to replace that message with something like,

"All logos are property of the respective copyright holder."

This is not to say that you would be 100% immune from litigation, but it would surely beat the consequences of claiming to own that artwork.

I am not a lawyer (and I don't play one on TV), but I spent many years in the Advertising/Graphic Design/Public Relations Firm industries and I know that these issues can get very ugly.

I'm not trying to cause problems, I'm trying to prevent them for you. I hope you (and everyone else) understand that I'm not trying to attack you here.

the copyright stuff is just remnants from some old pages I used. I don't even know why its still there...and now its gone. As for the logos, I'm not keeping them up forever...I don't have the space. So they will be gone soon anyway.

Did you snag my idea from the similar tread and my gallery? COOL!

Jay Wilson
12-04-03, 07:13 AM
Yep Bob...Sure did. Sorry, but I thought they were cool enough to do on the wall entering my theatre. I did two of them, with one each of the signs for Dolby, THX, and DTS. Then I did a screen captire from my intor disc that says "The WIlson Private Cinema" and stuck it in the very 1st space.

Ok... I printed them out on my inkjet printer on photo paper, and was not too pleased with the result. I tried to trim off the white borders that is left on the paper... didn't look so hot. Trying to cut the ink-jet printed pictures resulted in smudging, etc.

So.... I took the images, dumped them down onto a CD, and took them to Wal-Mart's photo center. I had them developed by their photo lab in an 8 x 10 size. The results are absolutely beautiful. I then walked over to Wal-Mart's frame section, and picked up a couple of 8x10 picture frames to mount them in - as was suggested earlier. I am attaching a photo of how they look.

Also - this is a GREAT Christmas idea. I made one of each for my friend that has an HT. The total cost (depending on how nice of a frame you choose) is less than $4.50 per sign, including frame!

XRay
12-14-03, 08:39 PM
Excellent! An HT accessory that didn't require me to break out the Visa!

I just printed them out in 8x10 using XP's photo printing wizard and mounted them in some $2 Wal Mart frames that I already had (Sorry, Grandma, I'll get you a new frame, I promise).

Didn't cost me a dime and only took about 15-20 minutes of my time. Very cool suggestion!

Yes, there was a difference. The blacks look so much darker, and the photos from WalMart did NOT smudge or smear at all.

Definitely worth $2.48 per pic!

p.s. I appreciate the copywrite warnings but they could be paying for the free advertising of their product instead of threatening a lawsuit. Especially since every DVD I buy has one if not all three on the case. I already paid for the picture.

Requis -

It doesn't sound odd at all, but you might want to post a new thread asking that question in the title.

This thread has been going on for a month or two, and so the only people that will probably read it are people that subscribe to it - a handful at best. I know that I don't often re-visit threads that I have read before unless I have a great intrest in that particular topic.

Your best bet is to start another thread that will be read by everyone - so you are not limiting your audience on this new question.

Good luck!

Where were you a week ago!! Thanks so much for responding. I used other drawings that I pulled off of google. As I had to get them in to the glass guys to etch them in the door. I just found out I get my Door next week. And that they were able to not only etch the glass, but also were able to put in colors.

I'll post pics when its done!

Thanks again!

Sorry I was to late Requis. I'm looking forward to seeing your glass door.

HTJunkie1, It looks like the ones on simonduz's site are 792 x 612 pixels. I could scale them up to around that size. I acutally found these somewhere on the web, with a collection of some very nice eps files. Can't remember where, but I'm sure I found the link at AVS.

The other files include lots of other good stuff. Movie studio logos, Anamorphic widescreen logos, Closed caption, more dolby digital, dts, THX, movie ratings (r, pg, etc.) about 170 all told. Perhaps simonduz would just like to post the zip file containing them? If you have a program that can open EPS files you can use them. In Photoshop for example, you can scale them to any size without loss of clarity.

Lawdawg,So all we have to do is download them and print them like the other DD and DTS signs?

lawdawg
01-30-04, 11:09 AM
Well, It's not quite that simple. But you can create logos that look like the ones on simonduz site within less than a minute, with photoshop.

Tell you what I'll do. I'll create jpgs of all of these files, I prefer other formats (png, psd) but by having them in jpgs everyone should be able to use them. I'll do jpg over bitmap, because the file size will be much smaller, but the quality will not suffer (we are talking basic two and three color images here.)

I'd also create them at a larger size than the 792x612 that the other DD ones are at. Probably 1500x1200, so those who wish to resize, use them on screen, etc. can have a better quality resize. Then I'll zip them all up, create an image with thumbnail previews of them all, and see if simonduz will host it. Much like the DTS/DD images that simonduz is hosting, I will create about 4 basic color schemes (red, blue, yellow, white) where appropriate.

Wow that sounds like allot of work ;) Might take me a little while, but if there is interest, I'll do it.

Let me know what you guys think.

Here is a picture of the plaques I made. The pic does not do it justice, the actual photo print outs are of a very high quality. I used Photoshop to make mine. Page layout was set to 8x10" and a resolution of 300. The high resolution guaranteed me a high quality print out. I printed them out at Wal-mart and bought the frames at Target. I'm going to redo the DTS logo b/c I made the red a little dark then the original logo. I'm going to change it back to the slightly lighter red and make the words "extended surround" thicker. Other then that I am very excited about the results, especially with the DLP logo. This was definitely easier to do then searching the web for somewhere to buy them.

Just use the "text tool" and creat your own text and paste it over the old text. You could start from scratch with just the logos and add anything you want too. Just go to the website mention a few post up (post #54). That is where I got all the logos that I used and then I created the rest of the sign, all in Photoshop.

I wonder how they would look if they were mounted using this process:

http://store.yahoo.com/hollywoodgallery/plakmounting1.html

It looks like it would cost about $11.50 per sign (11X14) to have them done. Not much more than a frame.

I really love this idea !!! the logos look great :) thanks to whomever posted the files !!

I've done something similar, and made some mini movie posters by download movie wallpaper files from various free sites, and I gotta say they look stunning !

I download the file with the best resolution I can get usually 1024 x 768 or
1080 x 1024 and print them on good quality photo paper 8 1/2 x 11 with my inkjet ....sorry I don't have any photo's to post, but give it a try I'm sure you'll like them.

The higher the resolution the better. 72 dpi images are optimized for the internet, 300 dpi images and vector art files are used for printing. Pull the vector art (eps files) from brandsoftheworld.com and print them at a minimum of 300 dpi.

Vector art is based in mathematics, so you can adjust the dimensions and resolution yet still keep the original integrity of the graphic. Something like a gif or jpg can't be made bigger with out pixelation which degrades the image.

I had the same problem the first time I went to Wal-Mart to have these images printed. I just ended up going to another Wal-Mart and had no problem.

I can understand that they are trained to keep an eye out for copy protected material to prevent any law suits against Wal-Mart and to protect their own job, but it is not like I was asking them to mass produce these images for me. I just wanted one copy of each.

I used Wal-Mart's online service. I just uploaded the images to them (after converting to an acceptable pixel count), then picked up the prints at the store a few days later. Cost for three 5x7 prints: $1.83. Cost for 3 frames: $3.18. (The cheap frames actually looked better than the more expensive frames.) Unfortunately, I went over my budget of $5.

I don't think anyone at the store ever looked at the prints.

Does anyone know where to pick up those older Dolby Digital posters (i.e. the ones with the water ripple effects, the one with isometric view of the front of the DD theater circa 1996, and one other I can't remember)??? I've been looking for them online new, but have only been able to find a few used ones in "good" condition...

If anyone has any leads to finding professionally-made DD, DTS, THX posters/signs that are at least14x11, I'd really appreciate some info. Thanks.

They are photo print, made with an epson R800( : otherwise I used an Epson R240) with special card silver or mirrored.

The size is from an A4size to various more little dimensions...

The star wars saga is wider than 1m  (sorry but living in Italy, I use the metric system of measurements :o )

I have two .bmp logos from the .zip file that is available on page 2 that I would like to print at Wal-mart in 8x10 size. How should I go about doing this? These are .bmp files, not vector images. Will these work?

rlu929s
04-17-06, 10:14 AM
They should work. I'm probably going to attempt this at walmart of some where soon. Many have said they had issues with photo printing places not printing them because they are copyrighted images. You just have to keep hunting till you find someone that will or print them on photo paper yourself.

victor-eyd
04-17-06, 12:48 PM
These are my frames. I used the actual plaques and posters from Dolby and dts and had the picture framing company I work at give them a bit more heft to them. I desgined the dolby to have an insert to place a fullsize dvd case and you probably don't notice it, the golf dts plaque is "floating" within the frame. Way too expensive to make in the end, unfortunately.

I'm going to attempt to get some of the logo's printed today if possible. What's the best place to go that will give me the least hassle about printing?

Or should I just use an inkjet and do it on glossy photopaper?

UPDATE: I went ahead and tried using walmart online to upload the pics and it worked fine. I went there and the girl at the counter said you must have a home theater and said she though they were really neat.

They all came out great. The Fox Type Logo Reaper does came out ok. It was a little grainy. Wasn't sure why since it was much larger than the others.

If you use the online they only accept jpg and tiff files. You can use paint to save them as jpg files though.

They came out great.

All I did was use a few of the .bmp files that are in the wall logo.zip file. All silver for the three logo's.

All I did was open the .bmp files in Paint and then saved them as JPG files. I then uploaded them to walmart.com and told it to print them out. For 4 8x10 pics it was about 12.00. It'd be a lot cheaper if you didn't do 1 hour but I wanted them quick and 12 isn't much.

They came out great. Crisp and Shiny:)

They do look at them though becuase the girl commented on how cool they looked so depending on what walmart and who you get, you might have to argue them. I had no troubles though.

I've got a 3 picture frame with the DLP, DD-EX, and DTS-ES logos hanging in my theater entrance. Got the images here...thanks BTW. They all have the black backgrounds. I was curious if anyone had the same-type quality images of Dolby True HD and DTS-HD yet? I know its pretty early, but I'd like them in the same type setup with black background. I'm not sure what the 3rd pic would be in that frame though...maybe just HDTV logo or HD-DVD logo...any thoughts? Not THX b/c I don't have any "certified" products except some DVDs...I think that would be cheating a little...:) And definitely not BD...but don't want to bring that up here anyway.

Theres plenty of places that will print large pictures. Personally I use www.winkflash.com and have had great sucess with them. I got some of my wedding pictures done in poster sizer for around $8 plus shipping ($2 i think). You will need a high quality image to get a large end product.

That is actually a dts 27x40 poster, trimmed down to make my frame. Looking at the dts website, their newest poster is this:

It could also work, just trim down appropriately.

Yeah I figured an original would be harder (much) to get a hold of. I have quite a few high res dts/dolby images that I figured I could just get printed instead of trying to track down an original in good condition.

Are there any of the graphics floating around that have some of the newer technologies?

Currently I have about four of these "This theater features....XXXXX" they are simple, cheap and look nice.

But I was hoping to add a couple more signs with "This theater features":

Blu-Ray
HD
DLP

That type. Any high resolution images floating around? I know some of the Dolby and THX ones you could modify in Paint which was also very cool and I change the "this theater" to the name of my theater.
