jake14mw 03-10-06, 04:03 PM Has anybody ever had any luck with the Channel Master 3016 antenna? I just picked it up at Lowes for $34.99. I have to try something, my Channel Master 4021 is not working well lately, especially for WFSB. Given the low price, the small size, and the fact that I have read that the UHF part of the antenna is not it's strong point, I guess I can't expect much.
Since DirecTV is coming out with locals over the dish soon, I don't want to spend alot of money on an antenna. Also, Lowes will take returns on antennas, so I guess it's worth a shot.
NickyCT 03-11-06, 01:37 PM This question is for Dish network owner in Connecticut.
I had just upgraded the HD package for my parents. They have to replace the dish and receiver in order for me to receive those extra channels.
Here's what the tech did. He installed another dish pointing to another satellite instead of installing Dish 1000. He told me that he has to put another dish 500 because dish 1000 angel is way too low in connecticut and cannot be installed.
For me personally I would rather have dish 1000 instead of two dish500 on top of my roof.
Was he right or he was just trying to get rid of his Dish 500 from his warehouse.

Most likely, this was the CORRECT thing to do.....The Dish 1000 "looks" at 129 degrees; that's pretty low in the sky for folks in the Northeast, like myself (NH)....The second dish points to 61.5 degrees, a virtually "clean shot" from most areas in New England....most, if not all, of the signals on 61.5 are "mirrored" on 129, for those folks located quite a bit further west and south....Hope this answers your question.... :)

Are they planning on keeping 61.5 in the orbit. I could have sworn that I read somewhere they might get rid of 61.5 once they move everything to 129.
That's was the reason of my concern.
KML0224 03-12-06, 08:05 AM Thanks for the report Pauldow. They did indicate to me that they would be experimenting with the subchannels in prep for the tourney. Obviously, it would be great if they could make everything look great, but I would expect 3-3 to have the worst PQ, and I can live with that as long as they don't screw up the HD picture. As you said, 3-3 is a bonus.
I had 33-5 ("3-5") on for a few seconds yesterday and IT LOOKED HORRIBLE! Even worse than their "CBS 3" feed did! I hope they're still tweaking it! BTW, the HD looked the same as usual on 33-3 ("3-3"). Lastly, where are 33-1 and 33-2 ("3-1" and "3-2")?
jake14mw 03-12-06, 09:23 PM Good news UConn fans, UConn is in Philadelphia for the first two games, and Philadelphia is one of the first round sites in HD, so we get all HD for UConn in the tourney with the first game on Friday.

WFSB is trying something new. We put up a couple of web polls up to see what the viewers want on the HD channels for the basketball games this year.
Please keep in mind that we are locked into UCONN from Philly but everything else is up for grabs. The poll is by session and venue so vote now so we know what we will program come Thursday.

Hope this helps.
:)
Let me know by email what games you want us to show on 3.3. Again, try to keep it by venue and session. We are working on cleaning up the resolution so the games will be alot cleaner.

While there was no specific mention of WTIC or WTXX, broadcast industry news on the web states that starting this summer, Tribune-owned stations will commence multi-casting. Tribune has signed a deal to put The Tube Music Network on a digital sub-channel. The Tube is a music video service that shows concerts and videos, and allows for the insertion of local band videos and local commercials.
WTXX and WTIC Television are owned by Tribune.

Joe,
Great idea with the poll. I think that's great that you are giving us a voice in what we want to see. I just e-mailed this to you, before I saw your post here, but it would be great if you could respond here.
RE: The Thursday afternoon HD choices of San Diego and Greensboro, they only overlap for the 2:40 games. Otherwise, Greensboro has a game at 12:20, and San Diego has a game at 5:10. So if you chose to do the San Diego games, does this mean that you would really show the 5:10 game on 3-1 in place of the news, etc.. And in that case, would there be no HD game in the 12:00 slot, or could you still do the Greensboro game at 12:20? Thanks for asking and listening to us, we appreciate it!
jake14mw 03-15-06, 09:10 AM WFSB's Thursday schedule is as follows at this time. Subject to change of course:
12:20 PM Wichita State vs. Seton Hall 3.1 HD
12:40 PM Boston College vs. Pacific 3, 3.2
12:25 PM Oklahoma vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee 3.3
2:40 PM Marquette vs. Alabama. 3, 3.2
2:45 PM Florida vs. South Alabama 3.3
2:40 PM Tennessee vs. Winthrop 3.1 HD
7:10 PM George Washington vs. UNC Winthrop 3.1 HD
7:10 PM LSU vs. Iona 3
7:20 PM Gonzaga vs. Xavier 3.2
7:25 PM Illinois vs. Air Force 3.3
9:30 PM Duke vs. Southern 3.1 HD
9:30 PM Syracuse vs. Texas A&M 3, 3.2
9:45 PM Washington vs. Utah State 3.3
Wow, I have to say that this looks fantastic! Basketball heaven! I am still worried about the picture quality though! Fitting an HD signal and three subchannels sounds like too much to ask for fast action sports like BBall. My one piece of advice to WFSB is - for channel 3.3, don't worry about the PQ so much. I don't think you can spare it, and at most times it is the least desirable game. If it proves to be not working out, ditch 3.3 altogether. I think CBS does a good job of switching the main game to another when it's interesting so Analog 3 will probably switch to that game if it's close down the strech.
One other note, they are still looking into whether they can broadcast the 5:10 game at all on somewhere on the DT channel.

joehorn 03-16-06, 07:07 AM Just an update.
We are broadcasting the 5:10 UCLA game on 3.3.
Also, word has spread and the Adelphia and Cox cable systems are going to be carrying our subchannel games on their systems. I do not know the channels yet but they confirmed they.
Please be patient with us for the 1st couple of minutes onj Thursday to see what is going on with the 3 streams on DT. We did some tweaking but it was with regular programming, not basketball. We think we will be OK but we may have to tweak here and there to make it all work.
I was hoping that the Courant would have said something about the games and our subchannels but oh well.
As always, questions and comments are always welcome

Seeth Ransom 03-16-06, 02:20 PM Hello All,
Though I am very happy I receive CT's ABC, NBC, Fox, PBS, and UPN (less us not forget I/Pax), I surrender to find more. I would be happier if I could get Channel 3 (33), and 20.
I have spent the month putting antenna's outside, in my 3rd floor, and settled for my attic for my outdoor antenna. I have to use a stupid Terk 55 in my office to get Channel 8. Well, it cannot be that stupid, as it is the only thing that will get 8. It only works in my office too.
I have tuned in many other channels, as far as NYC! Then the next day, they are gone! Since I am not savy, my best guess is Solar Flares taunt me.
Today, I have surrendered. I can only hang out windows, and my attic for so long. I have cuts, welts, abrasions, and a near death experiance. I will live with the fact that CBS is just moot. Sure, I could buy a new Channel Master system for over $100. Is this worth it to me for one channel? Nahhhhhh, I'll have to deal with a few shows on CBS I like on my SD-PVR.
Everything is set up, and will be left this way, as it works it's possible best. Now, after a month, I will enjoy watching this darn TV, instead of tweaking it. Not that it has not been fun.
I have tried to comprehend the theroy of antennas, but I just don't get it. I have been all over here, and google, I think I have seen it all. I can make a Wi-Fi Cantenna that sniffs the streets, but I am not a TV guy, I guess.
Thank you everyone for your posts. Even lurking, they made sense to my situation, in all areas of HDTV. I will continue to use this thread, and BBS often. Perhaps when I am less sore, and tired, I might want to try again.
Thanks again, I'll be around!

jake14mw 03-16-06, 04:03 PM Friday's schedule from WFSB:
12:30p Arkansas vs. Bucknell 3, 3.2
12:15p OSU vs. Davidson 3.3
12:30p Arizona vs. Wisconsin 3.1 HD
2:50p Villanova Game 3, 3.1 HD, 3.2
2:35p GTown vs. N Iowa 3.3
7:25p UCONN vs. Albany 3, 3.1 HD 3.2
7:20p Cal. Vs. NC 3.3
9:30p UNC vs. Murray State 3, 3.2
9:40p Texas vs. Penn 3.3
9:45p Kentucky vs. UAB 3.1 HD
This brings in my only beef with their schedule: I don't know why the Villanova game would be on three channels when the West Virginia vs. Southern Illinois game should be one of the best games of the opening rounds.
Well, if that's my only beef I say they have done a darn good job!
joehorn 03-16-06, 04:51 PM Unfortunately, we are bound by the CBS network to carry certain games. In the case of Villanova, we are subject to what CBS makes us take at that time period.
Hope everyone in enjoying the games. :)
The San Diego situation really screwed up the CBS schedule so we are riding the wave with CBS.
We are running UCONN press conference's live on the internet if anyone is interested.

WFSB2 - Channel 150
WFSB3 - Channel 151
To be honest, I notice a very small difference in picture quality with macroblocking on the HD channel but overall I am very impressed with the PQ given the number of high motion channels being pushed. Great job WFSB!
Though I am very happy I receive CT's ABC, NBC, Fox, PBS, and UPN (let us not forget I/Pax), I surrender to find more. I would be happier if I could get Channel 3 (33), and 20...
About Channel 20, that station's broadcasting antenna in Farmington is currently pointed southwest toward Waterbury because that is the city that the station was originally licensed to serve. I also have trouble pulling in this channel partly because in East Windsor I am on the "back side" of their directional antenna. It is also pointed in a different direction from you in New London.
At some point in the future the antenna will be moved off the tower's side and up to the top of the tower and then may broadcast a more omnidirectional pattern. You mentioned that you receive FOX61 now, and that station's antenna is also temporarily side-mounted on the same Farmington tower as WB20 and eventually will move up to the top. The tower that they are on is the highest broadcast tower in the area. So when Channel 20's antenna is moved to the top you might be able to receive this channel in New London.
WB20's and FOX61's antennas cannot move up to the top until the FCC assigns a new digital channel number to Hartford's CPTV, whose antenna will also locate to the top of the Farmington tower. There has already been a couple years' delay in the FCC decision and I'm not aware of anything happening in the near future that will jumpstart this project.
Seeth Ransom 03-16-06, 08:10 PM WHNB,
Thank you for writing. I understand what you said, and it makes sense to me. Sometimes my channel search looks like it might pull it in sometimes, but no go. I am not able to add channels manually on my Sanyo Direct View. The channel search is the only way to add channels, sadly.
Is 20's position at channel 12 mean it is VHF?
Joe Horn has helped me with channel 3. One thing he had me do was to put my antenna on the analog input. I never tried this before, as I thought I'd get the same results in analog. I was wrong! I got 20, and 3 analog. I also got a handful of stations from Rhode Island. My signals were weak for analog channels 18, and 24. Therefore, there is an issue on my end, or a deflection of the signal on its way to me.
I think my equipment is sound enough that if the wave is here, it would find it. I've tried bouncing off other antennas in the hood, the compass degrees, etc. Once we have some work done to our house I might try a roof mount. I'm not sure if it will be much better than the attic, as it clears other houses, and trees. Since this is a 3 story house, the attic is quite small. At it's peak, there is not that much more than building material to penetrate.
I thought that HD travels on the same type of wave as analog, but I must be wrong. It seems more directional.
I'm not too sure where to go from here. I guess I shall wait with many of you out there, until the channels get there new designations, and move up those towers. Hearing the info you gave, it seems lucky I do get what I have.
Thank you again for the info.

pauldow 03-16-06, 09:05 PM Joe,
I knew years ago that multicasting would show the true value of digital TV. Glad to see multiple games available.
Word should get to the directors though to tell the camera operators to pull back a bit. If they're going to take up so much room at the top of the screen with scores and clocks from other games, they should allow us to see the heads of the players on the far side of the court. Sometimes it's cutting off the ball at the top of the basket. They need a strip of masking tape along the top of their monitors.
Has anyone experimented with taking the 16:9 frame and putting a 4:3 video image on it and use the remaining space on the side for graphics?
jake14mw 03-17-06, 07:20 AM Joe,
Bravo to you folks so far! I did not get a chance to watch too much yesterday, but I was pleased with what I saw. 3-3 looked very blocky as we expected, and that means you guys are not stealing much bandwith from the main channels, excellent!
I took the day off today and am having about a dozen guys over, so I'll be watching every minute of it today on 3 or 4 TVs, and loving it!

Thank you again for the info.

Hey Mark,
Yes WTXX 20's DT is Ch12, The same as WPRI 12's analog from Providence wich is a strong enough signal in our neck of the woods on top of the issues WHNB had
stated.
Same problem with WTNH 8's DT Ch10 and WJAR 10's analog.
You really have to hand it to the FCC for approving that !!
I will be so happy when Feb. 2009 gets here.
If you want ABC and WB HD that bad try the Providence direction, ABC is WLNE 6/49 and WB is WLWC 28/22. Both in the UHF Band wich makes it nice if that is
what you are set up for.
I have recieved them both in the past in Montville but I am not set up for UHF
now to give you an idea how they are working.
Good Luck.
Keith
Joseph S 03-17-06, 05:56 PM Thinking of moving to somewhere within 20-30 minutes or less of Hartford. North>South as most of the family lives in and around Boston so I want to keep that commute to around 2h. Where are the prime HD OTA reception areas to receive all networks with minimal multicast and all DD passthru? OTA reception via roof/attic antenna, most likely.
Also hoping to get a better insight on the OTA HD situation so I can configure my backup OTA PVR setup in Boston to get the shows I might miss in Hartford due to reception issues, common station management screwups, or multicast. I understand from skimming this thread that some can pick a second NBC affiliate from Springfield but they don't have DD? Some other PBS affiliate in Middletown? CBS reception is spotty, but where? What about Worcester stations? What games do you primarily get on CBS affiliate, Jets or Pats? Who has rights to re-broadcast/simulcast the ESPN MNF games which might pre-empt national HD content?
Can someone point me to a complete summary or local forum? Looking for:
Channel - Affiliate - DD/no DD passthru - Multicast (Y/N and what)
Also, if I live just over the border in MA would I qualify for HD locals via DISH? I posted Comcast questions in that thread too, because I'm interested in NESNHD Red Sox/Bruins content which isn't available via either Satellite system. DirectTV's HD-Lite is pushing me away from their service even though they will have HD locals.
jake14mw 03-17-06, 07:39 PM Anyone else getting stuttering on the HD Uconn game, or is it just me?
Seeth Ransom 03-17-06, 08:48 PM NHeagle,
Thanks for the ID for 23. I have a list of channels I have tuned in to since I've had this TV. Now I can journel it. I actually like watching their Family Fued. My Friend has to translate though.
This is a strong signal to be so far away from me. I wish they were all as easy to tune in. This will come in no matter where I put the antenna.
Thanx again!

pauldow 03-17-06, 11:07 PM Anyone else getting stuttering on the HD Uconn game, or is it just me?
My video seems to be fine tonight.
I was wondering if other people have a problem with hearing the announcers when the 5.1 audio is sent? Even when I'm on 3.1 when they're showing a game in standard stereo, like during halftime, I hear the announcers fine. When watching a game in HD, I hear the ambient noise fine, but announcers are a relatively difficult to hear.
Anytime they go to one of those montages of old clips, the sound goes outta-control-loud too.
Is everyone getting this, or do I have some setting wrong in my receiver?
Thanks,
KML0224 03-18-06, 01:03 AM A roof antenna is key in greater Hartford, since the signals are coming from Avon, Hamden, Naugatuck/Prospect, Montville, Farmington and Bozrah.
Springfield has WWLP-DT (NBC) on channel 11, WGGB-DT (ABC) on channel 55 and WGBY-DT (PBS) on channel 58. They also have low-power stations on channels 65 (WDMR-LP, Telemundo) and 67 (WSHM-LP, CBS).
Reception of channels 18 and 24 from Avon Mountain are crap in New Britain's south end (at least they are for me).
Middletown doesn't have a TV station licensed to it but does get WGBY-TV (PBS) channel 57 from Springfield via Comcast cable.
We don't get either Worcester station in New Britain (Univision channel 27 and Daystar channel 48).
CBS's NFL coverage will usually lean towards the Patriots (unfortunately). The ESPN games do not air on local TV here. Only in Boston in New York (home NFL markets).

Same here too. I've noticed it throughout the four days. With Billy Packer doing the announcing, I don't mind so much :D
This also happened on ABC with Monday Night Football. The announcers were fine when the did the pre-game intro, but soon as the game began, the announcer audio was very soft. I wonder why it only seems to happen with Sports programming.

I've noticed that most of the CBS HD stuff with DD has louder rear sound than on other networks. Definitely noticeable when switching between 3.1 and 3.2, 3.3 over the weekend while surfing multiple game feeds. You turn up the sound to hear better on SD feeds and then get blasted by the rear speakers when you switch back to 3.1HD (while the announcers are relatively soft)....

I'm not sure if its worth it? I live in a 2nd floor condo and although am allowed to put antennas outside, it has to be in the rear of the building, which faces north (thus the reason for no DirectTV). So considering I have limited options for outdoor antennas, I am not sure if a indoor antenna will pick up the channels I am missing. Please take a look at the information from antennaweb and make a recommendation. If needed my zip code is 06708.
Thanks!
Chris112 03-21-06, 01:01 PM Also do the different color markings represent different size antennas? and if so is one particular color to big for indoors?
deconvolver 03-22-06, 11:51 AM Also do the different color markings represent different size antennas? and if so is one particular color to big for indoors?
The size of an antenna depends on the band it is designed for (UHF-> Channels 14-69; VHF-high-> channels 7-13, or VHF-low-> channels 2-6) as well as its gain. The color code very roughly corresponds to gain. For the same gain a VHF-low antenna is three times as big as a VHF high antenna and nine times as big as a UHF antenna. Many old outdoor antennas are designed for all three bands so they are very large for a given color code. Good small indoor UHF-only antennas exist (ex. Zenith silver sensor style or Radioshack double bow-tie style) that have decent gain. In your case the only two digital stations on your antennaweb list are WTNH-DT which is VHF-high and WCTX-DT which is UHF. Since these are both yellow color code stations you could probably get them using a cheapo VHF dipole rabbit ears with UHF loop type antenna which shouldn't cost more than about ten bucks. You should first try putting it near a South facing window for getting the New Haven stations. You would adjust and aim the antenna while viewing the analog stations (8 and 59) then do a scan for the digital ones (8.1 and 59.1 which are really broadcast on 10 and 39).

jake14mw 03-23-06, 10:41 AM Does anyone know what games will be shown on the WFSB HD channel tonight? From the Courant, it lists that for Channel 3, they will show the Duke game early, and the Gonzaga game late. I'd like to see the WV vs. Texas game on 3.1 late.

Not totally awesome. I'd much rather see the Villinova-BC game in HD for the early slot. Why would anyone in the northeast want to watch WS vs GM. Yeah, I know their in the Conn. bracket, but I'm more interested in the virtual Big East matchup of Villinova-BC.
aldujaparov 03-24-06, 08:15 PM anyone else upset we're not seeing BC/'nova in HD? Why do they have it on in std def?
jake14mw 03-24-06, 08:25 PM Yeah, this was a tough call, I think they are just trying to give us variety in being able to see multiple games. Since it seems like the GM/Wichita game is getting out of hand, hopefully they can switch to the BC/Nova game in the second half.
raoul5788 03-25-06, 12:43 PM Anyone having problems with 30-1? My D* H-20 started rebooting every time I tune to WVITDT. I called the station and talked to John in engineering. I have heard some reports of similiar problems with other stations around the country. Apparently it is a problem with the PSIP data stream. I gave him that info. He said that he would look into it.
Okay, now it is getting weirder! The H-20 finished the reset, going back to 30-1. I quickly changed the channel and it did not reset. That is the good news. :) When I change the channels going down, 30-1 is fine, but when I go up, it resets at 30-1! Not such good news!! :(

There is no pbs digital in this area yet. WEDN in Norwich and WEDW in Bridgeport are broadcasting digitally, but not WEDH. It will likely be a while before they are on. You might be able to pick up WGBY from Springfield.

Chris0381 03-26-06, 08:56 PM 57.1 thru 57.4 in springfield are good strong signals with good PTV programming. CPTV has such a strong analog signal its just as good as digital to me but not HDTV.

BillN96 04-01-06, 10:46 PM It really bothers me that that no one at WFSB thought to "flip the HD switch" for the NCAA tournament games until 10:45pm when I called them. (I had a late meeting and was watching them recorded.) It is not like this is a new thing and the NCAA Final Four is a pretty big event. Why can't the engineering departments of these television stations get their act together?

What did they say when you called?
We don't have a thread for Charter so I'll ask this here. Charter in Newtown has added a few HD channels recently and I was wondering if they upgraded there system for more bandwith or are compresssing more. Added YesHD today. Any way to find out what the bandwith of their system is?

stumacdo 04-10-06, 10:17 AM Don't know if those of you who have the D* HR10-250 have noticed this, but all of a sudden this weekend, I've started receiving both the NY Local Channels (2,4,5 & 7) along with the East Coast National Feeds (380's). I immediately placed a call to D* HD Support to question why I can receive the East Coast National SD Feeds but not the East Coast National HD Feeds. Got the usual run-around, but had them submit a new set of waivers to see if anything's changed.
As an aside, the HD Rep stated that HD Locals were coming to CT in June which is also their scheduled release date of their HD DVR.

You're right - only 2,4 & 5. Some reason, I thought I was getting 7 as well, but no go. Weird that they would give us NY CBS, Fox & NBC but not NY ABC.

Yes, it is weird. Those are the "significantly viewed channels" in New Haven county.
I just don't get it about the HD Feeds in Connecticut. Why would D* not enable those?
stumacdo 04-11-06, 08:53 AM Hard to tell. As I've said, it's pretty baffling that they would enable us to get the NY National SD feeds, but not the HD feeds. I got the old CSR dance when I called D*, they had no answer other than the standard "you have to submit waivers, blah, blah, blah"

Channels 10 and 12 from Providence are not in the 380's, but 2, 4 and 5 are. You are not eligible to get 2, 4 or 5, just what is considered "significantly viewed" in your area.

New to off air and having fun. Anyway tuned CH 61 just before 8 PM for AM Idol and found black and no sound. Plenty of signal. At 8 PM Idol started. Is this normal for 61? Don't they do digital when there's no HDTV? Just wondering.

Ross,
Just as an FYI, not only are we getting the NY Locals (2,4,5) but also the East Coast National Feeds (380+). It's kinda weird as now when I look to Tivo a show, I've got 4 sources (NY local, CT local, East Coast National & Off-air antenna).

Check ACE's website and you can get them delvered to the store.
I got 3016 and I get 3, 8, 20, 30, 59, 61 with decent results in my attic in Southington.
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has noticed that channels 3 and 61 have been dropping in strength at night . Seems to me that they were in the high 80's to 90 then drop to around 74-75 at night with lots of drop outs. Do they lower their power sometimes. Wonder why such fluctuation on calm nights. I live in the Enfield area and get the following
channel 3 76%_ 92%
8 65%-68%
20 65%-67%
30 90%
22 90%
61 75%-90%
also get channel 24 and 59 analog not in digital HMM!
I am wondering if when the trees get on the trees will my signal drop dramatically, i am using a Antenna that was on my cape for years back to the day of the rotor good antenna but rotor is frozen I run a 300 ohms from antenna into basement then switch to 75 ohms for run to entertainment center a 942 dish with OTA tuner also split from 300 hms to stereos in house for better fm signal
Love this site thankyou for any imput

Lowes and HomeDepot have some of the bigger (huge) antennas RCA and CM.
There is the Signal Electronics in West Hartford, but sales are final and if it does not work for you, you are stuck with it.
So, I've installed a HDTV card in my computer. And I've been experimenting with rabbit ears. Using a program on the computer (dtvscan (it's a linux program)) I've gotten a signal strength of about 70-75% on WTNH (CH10)(surprisingly absent the last 2 days) and WVIT (35). I have picked up weaker signals on WFSB(33), WTIC(31) and a couple of others.
Now I'm looking to buy a better antenna. I live in an apartment (on the 12th floor, in downtown Meriden), but think I could put an outdoor antenna on my balcony. I hoping someone can recommend a reputable dealer that I can get good advice from before I buy. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jon - Meriden CT

The last thing I heard was from Jerry Franklin, the CPTV general manager. They are still fighting with WABC for the use of digital channel 45. WABC already has it and doesn't want CPTV to use it, claiming that it would interfere with their signal. The FCC hasn't yet decided if CPTV will get to use 45 or have to go with another channel. Until then, the antenna can't be set up.

I just checked and 61 must be back to its messed up PSIP again. I can get it on my accurian receiver by manually tuning 31.1 and on my Sony a10 by tuning 31.3 but neither one gets it on 61.1 where it should be.

I hope WABC wins this battle as we don't need two channels from towns that close together. I can't get WPIX because it uses Channel 33 same as WFSB. Don't know what the reasoning behind the FCC decision was for this. They wouldn't do it to the analog channels os why do it to the digital ones.

Greetings, An e-mail reply from John Mason at Fox 61.
We're on the air and have been except for a couple of hours for maintenance
during the last two weeks. However, from viewer e-mails, it appears that
some folks are having a reacquisition issue. That problem may have been
triggered by some of the equipment we replaced.
I don't blame you for being unhappy. But what I've been told is the
equipment change is apparently forcing some folks to go through the
reacquire procedure, not that it prevents them from ever getting us again.
Essentially they can receive us, but their tuner doesn't recognize us. If
you've tried the reacquire procedure on your tuner and that didn't help, the
best advice I can give you is to check with the tuner manufacturer.
I've heard from about a half dozen viewers with the problem. But if the
reacquire doesn't work for you, you'll be the first to report that. Again
this is not a problem for all receivers.
Thanks for watching, John

My H20 will not pick up WTICDT either, but the digital tuner in my Mits 55511 does. Go figure.
It was officially announced today that New Haven's WCTX, Channel 59, will be a "My Network TV" affiliate starting September 5th. It is currently Connecticut's UPN station. UPN will cease to exist by the end of the summer.
It seems to me that WTIC 's, CH 61, answer is just BS. Too many different brands of tuners are effected. Why is it they are the only station I have a problem with? They have to learn along with the rest of us. Dig deeper like CH 30 did during the Olympics.

I'm in Old Lyme, and I've have decent luck with a CM 4221, attic mounted. For the relatively few $$$ spent, I can't complain. I'm pulling in 6-8 stations fairly regularly, pointing towards the Avon Mt area (Fox, PAX, NBC, UPN, Several Spanish networks). With Adelphia, i get a good selection of HD on cable, so this rounds things out nicely. With a Wally World Silver sensor, I can also get ABC from New Haven. No rotator yet, so I can't change things quickly, but LI and RI are definitely possible.

What is wrong with 32? That was the original allocation. Why go after 45? Makes no sense to me.
CPTV going after 45 instead of 32 has to do with them being on the same tower as WFSB which is 33. I guess there is some form of "bleed over" and it's best if the channel frequencies are separated a bit. Whatever the reason, I sure wish they would get something up and broadcasting OTA. Too me it seems like they are dragging their feet as the majority of viewers get the signal via cable and quite a few of the cable companies already have CPTV digitally.

Too me it seems like they are dragging their feet as the majority of viewers get the signal via cable and quite a few of the cable companies already have CPTV digitally.
They weren't going to be on tower with WFSB. They are supposed to be on tower with WTIC and WTXX. There must be a channel available that isn't close to anything around us.
Anybody else have any issues with WTNH over the past week. I watch everything time shifted with our HD DirecTivo so I'm just catching this now. We watched Lost and Invasion tonight and it had a few audio dropouts and at times the video seemed to change speeds. My wife mentioned it did the same thing for her on Sunday with Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy.
JosephR 05-05-06, 01:55 AM Yep comcast or wtnh has been sucking badly, the worst out of all of those was What About Brian, it lost audio a few times in the first half of show then lost video and only had audio for like 20 minutes of the end. I am really ticked about this crap with them over and over. Whenever I call they say oh its our feed from WTNH but I have DirecTV as well and have no problems with there local feeds ever. I dunno whats going on here =/.
It's WTNH not Comcast, same thing happening with my over the air HD signal. My standard def WTNH is fine (DirecTV). They better get this fixed asap, season finales are coming up for most of my shows. Anyone have a WTNH contact?
CHDinCT 05-05-06, 10:28 AM It's WTNH not Comcast, same thing happening with my over the air HD signal.
Ditto - saw the same drop outs OTA on Lost.
Also, I lost WFSB Digital OTA signal about 5:00 last night - couldn't watch CSI in HD - damn. Anybody else loose FSB? I'm pretty far out from their antenna - Killingworth - so it doesn't take much signal loss for me to loose it. In fact, I've got my fingers crossed that when the leaves come in, I'll still pick it up.

I noticed some audio drop-outs too while watching "LOST". Thought it was my HD-TiVo.
brewer4 05-05-06, 12:27 PM Same here (Marlborough) OTA HD on Windows Media Center.

Its all one big stall tactic. CPTV spent millions on new studio so maybe they are trying to delay tower stuff as long as they can.
I went to wtnh.com and forwarded an email to the programming deptartment (they don't list engineering in their menu). I suggest others do so. We are fast approaching the season finales of many our favorite shows and I don't want to miss anything... or even worse, have to watch them in standard def!!!!
JosephR 05-05-06, 01:40 PM I just called WTNH and got them to put me through to Engineering. The guy I talked to said ABC Switched digitally by satellite rather than analog and they where not ready yet here to receive it because a firmware change needed to be made so they have been trying to get it all working this past week and that's why they where having so many problems but it should be fixed as of now. He sounded like he knew what he was talking about and said they where well aware of the problem so lets just hope it really is fixed. I won't find out until Sunday when I watch Desperate Houswives and Grey's Anatomy. If anyone else watches anything between now and then and has any problems you can call 203-784-8888 and ask for engineering. I have watched everything this week except lost. Was lost really bad? I heard from all my friends (none have HD so they had no problems) but they both told me OMG you will crap when you watch this episode. So I guess it's a really good one, I just hope it isn't anywhere as bad as What about Brian was, I was about to break something watching the end of that show.

The audio dropouts were annoying in Lost but not nearly as bad as Invasion. Excellent episode of Lost though... enjoy!
Wife said she was missing audio for a good chunk of Desperate Housewives? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
DonDougan 05-08-06, 02:26 PM Wife said she was missing audio for a good chunk of Desperate Housewives? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
Not really missing audio completely but no center channel audio. It used to happen alot with WFSB. I don't know exactly what the cause is but it seems like it's someone at WTNH that's supposed to hit a switch to change from PCM to DD5.1 that isn't doing their job. The non-DD commercials were OK but even the Sony HD commercial had no center channel. Surround audio was there.
No audio on desperate housewife but background music I tried closed caption for the 1st half of show and it worked so at least you can read what they are saying
JosephR 05-08-06, 05:00 PM Arggg!! I'll just have to watch everything this week in crappy definition from DirecTV. I called them back today and the first 2 times they connected me I heard someone pick up the phone and hang up. I guess they don't want to talk to me again. The third time I was like they keep hanging up so they sent me to a voice mail and I left a message about it. It's pretty crappy I only have Comcast to get the high deff channels and like to watch the shows in high deff because they look so much better than the DirecTV locals and I live in Old Saybrook so I can't get OTA down here or at least not without an expensive super sized antenna setup.
-Joe
schmitter 05-09-06, 08:40 AM The same thing was happening on the first couple of weeks of Monday Night Football this past season. No center channel audio.
Rdy4aHDTV 05-09-06, 10:25 PM Hey,
I just pulled the trigger on my first HDTV the new Sammy 5687 and I am looking for a good starting point for the OTA antenna's. Is it possible to receive most channels with one antenna? Or would that involve rotors?
Thanks

From Wallyworld you might not need a rotor. I have a Channel Master 4228 in Cheshire and get all of the locals without having to move it. I point it at Rattlesnake Mtn and can still get WTNH and WCTX to the rear with no problem. Good luck!

The program was broadcasted in DD 5.1 and it appeared the center channel was missing! I had it TiVoed so I didn't discover the problem until it was too late to report or watch in SD

Great! Does the channel master pick up both uhf and vhf? Or do you really need a dual band antenna?

WTXX is digital 12, and WTNH is digital 10. I get them both with no dropouts. That's with the antenna pointed at WTXX and away from WTNH, which is a very strong signal.
Rdy4aHDTV 05-11-06, 10:13 PM How about WFSB? Sorry for all the questions. Just trying to make one purchase rather than multiple ones.

Hey, no problem! WFSB comes in rock solid. I'm using a Directv H20, which has the best digital tuner available in it, so that helps. Is your Sammy the HL-S5687W? How is the tuner in it? I hear the picture is spectacular! 1080P and a full 1920x1080!

Yes its the HL-S5687W! And I get my Dish HD installed next friday. The PQ in SD so far is impressive, so I expect the HD will blow me away. I would like to get some sort of OTA set up by next weekend as well so I can really take advantage of this set. Not to mention when the PS3 come out!
Is there a certain height the antenna should be mounted at?

Generally speaking, the higher the better, but not always. Check the installation instructions to see how to properly install it. You can probably use a 6 ft mast.

I'm in Killingworth and use a CM 4228 with a CM 7777 pre amp. My antenna is aimed at Hartford/New Britain and I get WFSB almost 100% of the time. WTNH comes in at 90% signal strength with the antenna pointed away from New Haven.
In Wallingford, you might need a pre amp to pick up WFSB. If you do, you're risk is that the pre amp might overload WTNH which is close by, or because WTNH will be 180% behind the antenna, it may not come in. If you check back on this thread for posts by Stumacdo or Stumaco (something like that), you will see lots of info on his trials and tribulations. He is in Wallingford and attempted what you're about to do.

This is an email response I received from Jerry Franklin who is the President and CEO of CPTV and WNPR-Connecticut. It seems to be in-line with what Arnold Chase says. Mr. Chase owns the Rattlesnake Mt. Antenna Complex where the CPTV antenna will reside. It will not be with WFSB's antenna.
Yes, we are still fighting with the FCC. Our original fight was with Channel 3 - WSFB regarding a perceived interference, but that has been resolved. Hartford/New Haven is one of a handful of markets across the Country where the FCC has yet to rule on the digital allocations. Our Fairfield County and Norwich HDTV channels are up and running but not our “flagship” frequency that serves Hartford/New Haven. (The HD channel, however, is available in the Hartford/New
Haven market on Comcast Digital tier 240).
We are pushing as forcefully as we can to get the FCC to unlock the Hartford logjam. Our expensive attorneys in Washington continue to tell us it is imminent. All I can tell you is that we are hopeful for activation some time in 2006. I wish I could be more definitive.
stumacdo 05-15-06, 10:25 AM Ray - I've sent you a PM with some additional info. Chris - you're right, trials & tribulations would be an understatement....... ;)

stumacdo 05-15-06, 10:45 AM Just wanted to fill you all in on my latest effort at getting HD East Coast Waivers from D*. About 1 1/2 months ago, I (along with many of you) started getting the NY locals along with the East Coast National feeds. This spurred me to (yet again) attempt to request the East Coast HD feeds from D*. My reasoning was that if D* was allowing us to receive the East Coast National feeds in SD, there was no reason they couldn't provide it to us in HD.
Drum roll please..........
Save the dime and don't even bother trying. To no suprise, over the weekend I received my HD Waiver denial from D*. Still don't understand how they can give us the East Coast National SD feeds, but not the HD feeds. Oh well, worth a try....

deconvolver 05-17-06, 09:39 PM While Katherine McPhee was singing an Aretha Franklin song on American Idol tonight at 9:30 PM my Sony TV stopped displaying a picture on WTIC-DT Fox 61.1 with the typical symptoms of PSIP problems. Changing to 31.3 allows my set to get Fox with the PSIP messed up but some receivers refuse to work at all. Is there a WTIC engineer that can check what happened at 9:30 to trigger this recurring problem so they can fix this problem for good?
putterboy 05-18-06, 04:14 PM Same problem here with fox 61, still not back on. This is the same problem we went thru several weeks ago, lost it for several days. Using a Directv h20, never a problem except with 61ota. The reply from them last time was a runaround, wish someone there would step up and take charge.
CHDinCT 05-19-06, 11:35 AM
Ditto on 61-1. Tried a forced reboot of my Direct TV H-20 this morning and still no signal. Really disappointing that WTIC can't keep it's signal up and doesn't provide any alerts or notices of what's going on. I've been told by them that the chief engineer monitors this site - so why no information on what's going on?
Anyone notice if WTIC FOX signal level decreased? I can't seem to get anything over 40% anymore and it was just 70-80% about 1 week ago. I don' think it's the trees leafing out as I got a stable signal all last summer. None of the other stations are affected. It would be nice if FOX went high power and PBS-DT finally got on the air.
putterboy 05-19-06, 01:21 PM I'm in West. MA, no problem with signal strength on h20, mid 90's. As with the previous problem with 61 ota, good signal strength, header appears, but no audio or video. Re-set was of no help. E-mailed them last time , posted reply from guy named Mason. Blamed it on some new equipment. Was hoping to watch Yankee/ Met game on fox saturday game of the week. If something doesn't happen, looks like it will be SD.

If you can't get 61.1 try 31.3 (which works for my Sony TV) and 31.1 (which works for my Accurian receiver in the basement). John Mason replied to my e-mail to the Fox-61 web page contact link, here is what he sent:
Actually the PSIP is probably more of a symptom (more serious on some
receivers than others) rather than the cause. The underlining problem
is a marginal satellite dish installation in Fox's digital distribution
system.
We have the new dishes on hand and at last report were awaiting a city
permit for the (rather large) crane to install them.
In any case our Engineers are well aware of the problem and are working
toget it fixed as quickly as possible. In addition to monitoring the
stationson-air they also monitor the HiDef chat rooms. In addition, as Linda
pointed out, we forward mail to them on a regular basis.
CHDinCT 05-19-06, 09:08 PM If you can't get 61.1 try 31.3 (which works for my Sony TV) and 31.1 (which works for my Accurian receiver in the basement.
Tried both of these and they don't bring any signal on my H-20. But never mind as the signal is back up here in Killingworth.
raoul5788 05-20-06, 01:53 PM It sure doesn't look like the Yankee/Mets game is in HD. Looks like "ED" to me. Anyone else? Also, I am getting alot of dropouts. I guess WTIC is still having problems. BTW, I am using an H20 for ota.
putterboy 05-21-06, 07:00 AM Fox61 back on for me on friday evening. Have to agree with Raoul5788 on PQ for saturday baseball game, not really as crisp as one would hope. Don't know if it's 61 or the network feed. Oh well, at least it's back on. For how long, it's wait and see. Greetings to all.
adamo0926 05-21-06, 06:56 PM Ok all...this is pretty strange. Since Cox does not yet carry ABC-HD so I bought an indoor antenna to see if I could pick up one of the ABC-HD channels over the air. Well it worked....but check this out. When watching the HD broadcast in 16x9 aspect, it's like the broadcast is not centered from top to bottom. On the bottom is a small black strip running across the bottom of the screen...and if ABC scrolls scores across the top, the top part of the scroll is cut off. It's like the whole picture needs to be pushed down from the top a 1/4 of an inch or so to make it fill the entire screen. If I go to Zoom or 4x3 Expand then I can fill the entire screen ?
Now I know this is not because of my display, because when I watch all my other HD channels from my cable box this does not occur. I also don't think it happens with any other HD that comes in over the air, only with ABC-HD over the air.
Anybody have any ideas about this bizarre display behavior ?

Saturday Fox baseball games are not in HD. They are 480i widescreen upconverted to 720p by network.
destrada 05-21-06, 07:44 PM Maybe an overscan issue with your display...not for sure though.
adamo0926 05-21-06, 08:44 PM What's an overscan ?
destrada 05-22-06, 03:25 PM Don't know the correct definition but basically, there's a little more picture than is actually shown on your screen. May need calibration. Do a search on your display and look for overscan. Normally there's anywhere from 3-8% overscan right out of the box.

I bet you're watching Springfield's ABC affiliate, WGGB-DT (analog Channel 40/digital 55). I've been getting the same black band on the bottom of the screen and people's heads nearly cut off at the top of the screen. This has been going on ever since Channel 40 began broadcasting in high definition.
I also receive New Haven's ABC affiliate WTNH, (analog Channel 8/digital 10). I compare the two channels when ABC has a HD feed. There is no black band on Channel 8; it's only on Channel 40.
In addition to this Hartford OTA HD forum, there is also a Springfield, Mass. AVS forum. I have written a post about this problem in the past on that forum, and at least one other Connecticut viewer has noticed the black band and has posted that the picture needs to be lowered a little. The Springfield forum is periodically read by the Sinclair engineer based in St. Louis who is supervising Channel 40's HD conversion. He hasn't commented on this problem, but his last post mentioned that he will be working on 5.1 surround sound on his next trip to Mass.
What puzzles me is that many of the Springfield posters don't seem to notice the black band that you and I see when Channel 40 shows high definition. Many of those posters get the channel via cable, and I don't know if their cable company is somehow compensating for this problem at the headend.
When Channel 40 switches to standard definition commercials during a HD program, the commercials don't reach the bottom of the screen either. But when the channel is showing a program in standard digital, both the commercials and the program extend all the way to the bottom of the screen.
schmitter 05-23-06, 08:34 AM It can't be worse than the zoom that WTIC does when they are not showing HD. It cuts off the phone numbers on the bottom of comercials and hides the bottom two choices on Who Wants to be a millionare and in general the picture looks horrible.
CHDinCT 05-24-06, 11:54 AM Well, I guess a kudo is in order for WTIC DT. PQ and sound was solid all Monday and Tuesday for 24 and American Idol. Only saw a very occassional blip. Thought I should commend them since I do like to point out when the signal is out.
ctvince 05-26-06, 10:14 AM Does anyone know if there is a selling forum here for equipment? I recently made the switch from my OTA HDTV to Cablevision and need to unload my CM 4228 antenna. I do have to say that I miss the OTA signal. It was much better than the compressed image I'm getting from cable. (plus $10 cheaper per month) AARRGh.....
pauldow 05-26-06, 01:35 PM I didn't see this posted in the past few pages, so...It looks like WUVN Channel 18 has added a second Univision network called Telefutura on 18-2.
Too bad they don't close caption to English as some English programming has Spanish captions or SAP.

mahidarkhak 06-04-06, 03:44 PM Hi
I have two questions, I am guessing here is the right forum, if not please direct me to appropriate ones:
1- I bought a Sony 27" SDTV (KD-27FS170).
I was considering either buying this or go with Toshiba 27" DF46.
My sony has NTSC/ATSC (two separate connections) and the Toshiba one claimed was ATSC/NTSC/QAM (but all in one connection). Despite Toshiba being 30$ cheaper , based on my experience that Sony is better brand and what i heard that Toshiba new tubes made by Orion In thailand are not reliable, i went by Sony.
1- What are the avaiable OTA ATSC channels? I live in windsorlocks, CT.
2 - How is QAM crucial?
I live in CT and wanna know what digital channels are broadcasted Over the air or what digital channels i could get via QAM without needing a STB from cable comapny (currently i use Cox).
Is there a way I can buy a QAM tuner separtately?
BTW: On another Topic
My Sony TV : When it is showing Analog channels or DVD on video 3 and the signal is 16:9,
sometimes on the top of the 16:9 picture 2" fropm 2" to the right it seems the the picture is very little bent. Is this normal? has any1 noticed that? is this because of flat tube technology?
schmitter 06-05-06, 09:55 AM For channels you can(might) get OTA, go to http://antennaweb.org.
QAM is the modulation that cable companies use for the digital channels. You can get a set top box that will decode QAM signals. The "in the clear" or unscrambled channels are the locals, on Cox, currently WFSB-DT, WVIT-DT, WEDH-DT(Which is not available OTA), WTXX-DT, and WTIC-DT.
KML0224 06-05-06, 11:20 AM I recently bought a Sanyo 26" LCD HDTV with one of those QAM tuners. When I've got the cable line hooked directly to the "Digital Antenna In" 75 ohm CATV input, Here's what I get for local HD:
Local access on 74-1, 74-2 and 74-3 (Public, Gov't and ARTS), NECN, TBS, HSN, QVC, C-Span 1 and 2, the local analogs including WRDM-LP (TEL) channel 50 Hartford, CN 8, Shop At Home, CT-N (kinda like the local C-Span?), EWTN, BET, NBC Weather Plus, Fuse and an NBA League Pass Info Channel. Besides that, I also got WTXX-DT (WB), WEDH-DT (PBS) [which is cable only], WVIT-DT (NBC), WFSB-DT (CBS) and WTIC-DT (FOX). No HD came in for I/PAX or UPN. As for the locals I did get in HD, it was only the primary channel for each (3-1 CBS, 8-1 ABC, etc.). NBC Weather Plus is technically 30-2 but Comcast already carries that separately anyway. What was strange was that I seemed to be getting an On Demand movie or two as the feed went to nothing the second the movie was over and it didn't match any listiings at tvguide.com or the channel guide on my converter in the other room. Strange!
madpoet 06-05-06, 12:56 PM KML, you should specify that this is on Comcast :). Cox has a more limited QAM selection. Additionally...
1) THere are two times of QAM... QAM64 and QAM256. 64 is used for digital SD channels and the music channels, 256 for the HD channels.
2) Some boxes will only tune 256, and not 64.
3) In addition to set top boxes there are also PC cards that can tune QAM. See the HTPC forum.
schmitter 06-06-06, 08:34 AM Actually Cox has no 64QAM channels anymore. 64QAM holds fewer channels, but is less sensitive to RF problems than 256QAM. KLM, it looks like your cable company is doing a little digital simucasting testing. They encode the analogs into digital and put them out both ways, in analog and in digital, that is why the tv guide data doesn't work, because it isn't officially launched as a product yet.
CT Raider 06-06-06, 09:34 AM I just got off the phone with D*$ecTV and they said that LOCAL HD Networks will be available 29th of June for those considered to be in the Hartford/New Haven county.
They won't have a receiver with DVR until almost the end of the year.
KML0224 06-06-06, 09:51 AM KML, you should specify that this is on Comcast :).
The TV has the QAM tuner built in. It's not with any type of card that I have to insert. Also, maybe it's my hookup, who knows? Last night, I do a digital cable scan and I only came up with "8-1" and "20-1" with nothing else (as in WTNH-DT and WTXX-DT). Presently, I've got the cable hooked directly to the TV with the "VHF/UHF/CATV" jack, while I've got a $12 RCA indoor rabbit ear antenna attached to the "Digital Antenna In" jack.
As for Comcast, their cable converters which pass the HD picture through cost an extra $1 a month to rent.
madpoet 06-06-06, 10:15 AM Right... your TV has a built in QAM tuner. I was answering mah's questions about QAM. The Digital Antenna In jack is the only one that can tune QAM OR ATSC. The reason you only got 2 channels is because those are the two broadcast channels that your antenna picked up. If you switched the cable line over to the digital in, you would be able to tune your QAM stations again. No idea what Comcast converters cost $1. The HD receiver is something like $9 and the HD DVR is $14. If you want to continue this discussion we should do so on the CT- Comcast thread.
schmitter, Comcast is indeed doing digital simulcasting (at least in Vernon). The 3412 they gave me has NO analog tuner, only digital :). And I have to say, their digital converts look really nice. As good or better than the D* equivalant side by side.

Which translates to me not upgrading until next spring. Not about to get on the roof during a NE winter. If I can score a new dish for the cheap on line, I can do the prep work. I wonder when that slimline becomes available.

You could upgrade to the new dish now, and the mpeg4 dvr later. The slimline is supposed to be available soon.

You can request it, I got the H20 free after the rebate, and the dish was also free, although it was done at a different time.
brewer4 06-06-06, 04:53 PM I bought the H20 at Best Buy, used the rebate and got the dish installed separate no charge. Better way to go if you have to wait for an installation date. Whatever way you work it, if you are a good D* customer, you shouldnt have to pay for the H20 and AT9 dish.

It's a new version of the 5 lnb dish, not out yet, but should be sometime soon. It's a little smaller than the current one, and the lnb's are all in one head.

Once I get word on that slimline being available I might start hounding them for a freebie upgrade. No intention of going MPEG4 until I have a dvr replacement. However, if winter is a correct approximation, I'd rather be prepared. I have a feeling, just a gut feeling, that we may start to see mpeg4 specific HD channels before long (not nationals, but possibly RSN's spot beamed to local markets.

Your welcome. BTW, if you call D* and get a csr that wants to charge you for the new dish, call back. They were going to charge me $49+ for an AT9. I couldn't stay on the line at the time. When I called back, the new csr gave me the dish for free without me having to ask. Good luck!

You don't need five wires, only one. I think the AT9 has a four outlet multi-switch in it, so I ASSUME the Slimline does, too.
putterboy 06-18-06, 04:06 PM HAPPY FATHERS DAY TO ALL !!! Am considering recruiting a team of demolition experts to blow up Fox61 in Hartford. Station has been out AGAIN for several days now, genuine pain in the ass. Don't know what goes on there, the only OTA station I ever have problems with. Thank goodness Fox isn't the network carrying the U.S. Open !!
I don't have an OTA antenna, but I'm curious if anyone else has tried tuning into the WTXX sub-channel "The Tube". Its supposed to be a 24/7 music network.

Not sure how much bandwith they are giving to the subchannel but the picture and sound isn't bad.

Seeth Ransom 06-19-06, 03:13 PM Hi All,
If you can find Channel 11 (sadly, it can conflict with 3), they also show the Tube. Great station!
Seeth Ransom 06-23-06, 08:56 AM At Last!!!
My Tuner Caught 61, and it works!!! Before now, it would only be picked up on 31.
I think my tuner is different than many of you. I don't get to add channels manually. I have to do a scan, and whatever gets picked up I get. The Analog side lets me add whatever I want. Strange.
I ended up getting 20, and channel 3, but only once. I now use 12 from RI, or 2 from NYC. For WB, I can only find 11 in NYC.
For some reason, NYC,NJ, and PA will overwhelm my attic often. The result was that many local channels were squelched out. To help this, I put annother antenna behind the chimney (that is fun to squeeze the gap). In the north attic, this second antenna only will lose 61. I also have the third for RI. I use an A-B-C switch, that is on cleaence for $3.50 at Walmart.
That reminds me! Radio Shack is Closing in Waterford. They are have mad, crazy deals! I might pick up their Rotor. Once I have a Rotor, I can get the Channel Master I want.

Channel 20, and 3 are very hard for me to get. I get everything else from CT though.
Since I can't get 3, I use freq. 33 for 11 out of NYC. My CBS Comes from NY, or RI.
I think 3 is not at full power yet, and 20's broadcasts are on the back of the tower. I get them analog, but no dice for dig.
Thank you for the info though.

stumacdo 06-27-06, 01:32 PM Hi all,
Just a note that there's a Radio Shack in Meriden (in the Ocean State Job Lot plaza) that's also going out-of-business. Everything's 50-70% off and they seem to be also receiving stock from other RS stores closing down as there's always different things in there daily. They still have a good amount of stuff left (over-priced Monster cables now reasonable, etc, etc). Worth checking out if you're local to it.
I'm not sure what's more frustrating. The WTIC-DT problems or the fact that there is still no resolution on the WEDH-DT issues.

Checked with a regional DirecTV guy, he said that they don't have agreements to carry WTNH-DT or WTIC-DT yet. So now we must wait.
Like already mentioned, useless without the DVR. However, I do hope they can get agreements in place AND a HD DVR out by September. Up north, I struggle with WTNH until the leaves fall.
But no matter how you slice it, it's good news for D* subscribers. Hopefully the RSN rumor proves true. If so, by opening day next year we should be in for a treat and staring at a lot of HD Channels... just a little light at the end of the tunnel

Is this on 24/7? I tried last night and didn't find it on 20-2. Now, it could be because the leaves on the trees are blocking my reception....
Does anyone have an agreement with either WTIC or WTNH? I was looking on Comcast's website, and they do not list those as available in our area... along with The WB, which is also Tribune owned. New Britain is a Comcast area.

anuskicker 06-29-06, 08:35 PM I live in norwich and I was wondering if any one in the area gets FOX in HD from OTA? And what hardware are they using?
KML0224 07-04-06, 11:06 AM This morning, I attached an oridnary pair of VHF telscoping rods to the back of my Sanyo 26" LCD HDTV in New Britain (the kind that are supposed to pop into a little slot on the back of a small TV). Here's what I got:
[D 33] WFSB-DT (CBS) Hartford 3-1, 3-2 ("CBS 3"), 3-3 (blank)
[D 10] WTNH-DT (ABC) New Haven 8-1, 8-2 (Storm Team 8 Doppler)
[D 46] WUVN-DT (UNI) Hartford 18-1, 18-2 (Telefutura)
[D 12] WTXX-DT (WB) Waterbury 20-1, 20-2 (The Tube)
[D 34] WHPX-DT (I) New London 26-1, 26-2 (PAX), 26-3 (Worship), 26-4 (Faith TV)
[D 35] WVIT-DT (NBC) New Britain 30-1, 30-2 (NBC Weather Plus)
[D 45] WEDN-DT (PBS) Norwich 53-1, 53-2, 53-3, 53-4, 53-5 (no audio), 53-6
[D 39] WCTX-DT (UPN) New Haven 59-1
[D 31] WTIC-DT (FOX) Hartford 61-1
Here's what's worth noting: My house is partially blocked with Avon Mountain due to Walnut Hill and its park being in the exact same direction. WFSB-DT is so-so while I'm getting almost nothing of WUVN-DT. I probably only get WTXX-DT because it transmits from Rattlesnake Mountain. Today was the first time I ever got any signal from WEDN-DT and it's still weak. With this same antenna in a different position early this morning, I also got a choppy signal of WPXQ-DT (I) channel 17 ("69-1", etc.) from Block Island/Providence, RI. That's likely due to their transmitter being in Exeter, RI, which is closer than Providence is to New Britain.
Now, on an unrelated note, my TV on some scans would show a duplication of sorts. It would show both "8-1/8-2" and "10-1/10-2" with WTNH-DT on some scans. I think it did this once with the weak signal of WPXQ-DT from RI. It would show "17-1" and "69-1". My TV is only two months old and it rarely does this. Normally, it channel maps and shows "8-1", etc for WTNH-DT. Hmmm!

Torrington will be difficult to get a good signal, although being up high is good. I checked antennaweb.org and it doesn't look too good for you. Is it possible to borrow a digital receiver from someone? That is the best way to tell what you can get. A rooftop antenna with a rotor would be a must. From where I am, I can get all the CT locals in analog and HD (this includes all 3 PBS channels). On certain nights I can receive Boston analog decently, and on the even more rare occasion, I can get all Boston HD stations except WFXT. But I stress, that does not happen often. I usually have zero signal on those. I get no NY analog or HD feeds from here. Providence: I get their useless PAX channel 17 all the time, but much like Boston, some nights I can get all their HD channels. Providence analog comes in really snowy all the time.

I can occasionally get channel 21, analog only, no 22, but Cheshire isn't the best place for reception.

And better yet to see!
By the by, I noticed the improved PQ on WTIC for the All Star game Tuesday night. Then I read some technical jargon in the HD Programming forum about FOX increasing the bandwidth on their splicing system. I hope it continues for fall baseball playoffs, prime time premiers, and NFL football.
docbone 07-14-06, 04:09 AM One reason you may have noticed an improvement in picture quality on Ch 61 for the All Star Game is that Fox did the game in HD, whereas their regular Saturday baseball telecasts are in widescreen but only standard definition. The baseball post-season and NFL football should all be in true HD.
KML0224 07-14-06, 10:52 AM I'm still hearing about the widescreen that FOX used during football a few years ago and how it looked compared to CBS-HD. By the way, will WFSB-DT channel 33 carry all NFL games this fall in HD? Even the games which don't involve the Patriots or Jets? Also, I'm hoping that their "CBS 3" subchannel can carry an occasional separate game from "regular" channel 3. That only happened one time last season that I know of. (In that given week, "CBS 3" wound up showing a Miami Dolphins game :).)
KML0224 07-14-06, 10:34 PM Did anybody else notice the audio for the last several hours on WTXX-DT channel 12-1, a.k.a. "20-1"? The sound keeps cutting in and out with rapid speed. It happened with local origination this afternoon and with WB network in HD this evening. The sound on 12-2, a.k.a. "20-2" (The Tube) has been fine the whole time. :(

CBS is still only doing 3 of their games in HD each week this year. WFSB will still only show the one game that they choose each week. If CBS does it in HD, they will show it in HD. I have never heard of any station showing a different game on a subchannel for the NFL. I think the NFL may have rules against it.
KML0224 07-17-06, 07:27 PM I believe so. However, this is indeed fact. Remember, although "CBS 3" is sent out by WFSB-DT in Hartford, it's available over-the-air in Springfield on channel 67 and is intended as CBS for their market.

It happened with local origination this afternoon and with WB network in HD this evening. The sound on 12-2, a.k.a. "20-2" (The Tube) has been fine the whole time. :(
I see that Channel 55-3 (Springfield) is now carrying The Tube.....
KML0224 07-24-06, 12:27 AM Besides 12-2, a.k.a. "20-2", The Tube is now appearing on my TV's QAM tuner as 82-3. It's not WTXX-DT since there's no hourly ID.

Interesting - what cable provider do you have? I get WTXX-DT on 82-2 on Comcast.
Seeth Ransom 08-08-06, 03:03 PM It's 2006!! What's going on with Fox and WB here  and who should I lodge my complaints with? This is ridiculous to be happening at this point in the transition.
Fox 61 (31-1) has stopped streching! I can't tell ya about 20, as I still cannot get that channel. Everything from Boston to NY, except 20, and 3. I wish my tuner was more user friendly.

Seeth Ransom 08-08-06, 03:31 PM Hello All,
I've been checking in, but have had nothing worth posting. Today I have some news, and questions.
You might know that I live in New London, in a 3 story house. Since the 3rd story is just two rooms, there is only a small crawl space for an attic. This is where I have my 3 antennas.
I must have everything put almost where it needs to go. I am now getting Boston on about 3-4 nights a week. This is with my U75-R from the Shack. It is about 50-60 degrees off north. I am able to get RI too, but not as many nights. I think it is the Trees. If I rotate that antenna more east, there is a break in the trees. My Problem is that it seems to hit a Big Ol' unused antenna on my neihbor's house. On some nights, it takes me to VA! Of course, this squelches all Boston, and RI.
I have 2 of those Stelth Plane looking antennea, one I just got for $3.00 as RS was closing in my town (I walked with $100's of stuff for $30). One is SW, and loves New York! I get NY channels 2,5, and 9 almost 24/7. The third is towards Rattlesnake Moutain. With this I can get 8,30,59, and 61. I have had brief moments of 20, and 3. This antenna seems to get overwhelmed by NY sometimes, I will lose 8, and 61. This brings me to my question...
How do I shield my local channels from these strong, but distant stations? I have an attinuator, but this does not help.
Does anyone else in my area get this problem/blessing? How do you deal? The channels I get can even go to Philly, and Jersey! is this just luck? I feel fortunate to have great reception, but if 8 is dead while watching Lost, because NY wants in, I'll go nuts. How do I get NY? Am I skipping on the Sound water? How do I fine tune my antenna for terrain?
I do know there are some conflicts that make some channels not work.
NY7=45
CPTV=45
They alternate during the day
CT3=33
NY11=33
3 is a rare treat for me, 11 comes in almost everyday. At times it is my only WB
NY5=44
WGBX=44
I would rather have NY5, but MA5=20. I would like to get CT20 one day. If I can block 44 from being picked up by my tuner, than all would work.
There are many other conflicts that clear up as soon as I hit the ABC switch.
Thank you all for your continued wisdom, and advice.

antarutin 08-10-06, 06:56 PM Does anyone know how much will my signal will gain if i was to move my antenna from attic to rooftop? Currently im getting local stations at about 80% , is 100% a lot better in picture quality? Thank you.

As long as your picture is stable, 80% is no better than 100%, which you will likely not get anyway. 80% is usually enough to maintain the picture with no breakups. Being in an attic does attenuate the signal, sometimes quite alot.
RTracey 08-10-06, 07:34 PM agree Chip, just makes me wonder why he wants to go from 80% to 100%
antarutin - are you experiencing some type of picture problem or issue?
Ross
antarutin 08-10-06, 07:44 PM Not really just wondering if 100% or so is a better picture especially whe watching hd content. I gues since I have never seen a 100% tend to compare it to 80% power in a car which would make it a lot different.
RTracey 08-10-06, 07:55 PM nah, Chip's right - don't worry about it.
Ross

Apples and oranges. 25% more power in a car is alot, but once you get to around 60 to 70% signal strength, you have enough signal to maintain the picture.
Seeth Ransom 08-10-06, 10:29 PM Hi
50% on my meter is enough for a great picture. Anything less is broken up. 95% does not seem to make too much difference.
Does your attic have Siding around it?
Mark
brewer4 08-10-06, 10:37 PM I find receivers have different thresholds for solid pictures even between VHF and UHF channels. No matter what though, anything over 70% solid will have great results.
stumacdo 08-11-06, 09:59 AM Has anyone noticed a recent change with Fox 61 ? I could swear that it used to be channel 31-1 with my OTA set-up. Now it seems to be 61-1. Not a big deal, but I wonder why there was a switch ?

Maybe it has something to do with them not stretching their sd picture anymore.
Quick background:
Live in a condo facing north-received permission to put D* dish on roof.
Roof is being worked on-the dish must be remove briefly and then reattached. The word I have received is that no way will the reattached dish be aligned. The roofers will not realign dish.
I set up an appointment with D* for tomorrow for them to realign the dish.
I was thinking of adding the D* antenna to my service call for tomorrow.
I currently have an indoor ota set-up. works like crap.
I have a Zenith ZHDTV1 Silver Sensor and a Channel Master CM7778. I have no attic.
The condo complex was very cooperative with the dish so I certainly did not want to push with a large ota antenna on the roof. There are around 160 units and there are zero roof antennas.
Now my question-has anyone seen or have opinions on the D* clip-on antenna?
From D*'s website.
Quote:
Omni/semidirectional, UHF/VHF antenna. This antenna is ideal for consumers who live between two or more television transmitting stations because of its ability to pick up signals from different directions. Its compact size allows the antenna to be conveniently disguised behind a satellite dish.
Do you think it will work and is it unobtrusive? Since i am at work, there are very few sites I can access and almost all images are the red x in a box.
Here is my local info.

stumacdo 08-11-06, 03:23 PM Congrats on getting the condo approval - I know you were struggling with it for a while. Being here in Wallingford as well, I know of 2 people who had the D* antenna installed and both said it was an absolute piece of junk. You could always go ahead and have them install and see what you get, but I'd be surprised if you picked up more than ABC and maybe NBC. I'm currently using the CM4228. It's rated as UHF only, but I pick up ABC and WB (both VHF) with solid signals on it as well. The only downside is that it's a butt-ugly antenna. But, if your goal is to truly get all the HD OTA that you possibly can, I don't think you'll have any other choice. Good luck.
PS, I understand all about the intricacies of living in a condo unit, but I'm about 99% convinced that legally, a condo complex cannot prevent you from putting a dish or antenna on your roof. Aesthetically, you may get grief from your other residents, but screw 'em !!!!!! Don't let them come between you and HD !!!!

Well I don't need a piece of junk. I get ABC, have the waiver for NBC (still working for now), on a great day I can get CBS, but can't trust it enough to record off it. Fox-nothing. I thought if the D* ota was decent, I could get all of them and get the Silver Sensor out of the room.
Which brings up your point regarding grief from the other residents, it is not them I am concerned about, it is the boss. :) She would never go for a big ugly antenna. :( :D
Clip-On Antenna
I was just in the Enfield, CT Ocean State Job Lot store today, and they have the clip-on antenna, under the RCA brand, currently selling for $20. Dish Network charged me $80 for one in 2002. Also selling for $20 at Ocean State is the RCA plastic antenna that you mount horizontally on your siding, balcony, etc.
stumacdo 08-11-06, 04:02 PM Thanks stumacdo

I hear that !! I convinced my boss to allow me with the understanding that when we could start getting locals in HD via D* that I would take the antenna down. Luckily, she's a Tivo fan, so until D* releases their own HD-DVR AND they get an agreement with all the CT locals to transmit HD - I'm safe.
You've got nothing to lose by having D* install it (especially if it's not going to cost you anything). There's one on the roof in a development near mine, and I think it's pretty unobtrusive. I'm sure that's my opinion only, and probably wouldn't be shared with my (or your) spouse .......
PaulieORF 08-11-06, 08:42 PM I just caught this. This is awesome, and I can only hope that this type of thing will happen every time in the future that the Sox and Yanks both play at the same time on Fox. I am very surprised that they were able to work this out.

Seeth Ransom 08-12-06, 11:47 AM WHNB,
I have bought the Samsung Antenna from the Job Lot. This is the best indoor antenna I've found. That was at the Joblot for $35. If you are closer to the tower than me, it is a good investment.
I also bought the Terk TV 55 from the Job Lot for $20.00. This sells at the Shack for $99.00. This antenna is great if you have enough height. I can pull in 8,30,59, 61, and a handful of smaller I,or PBS channels. If on a budget, this could be useful.
From what I've read, the CM4228 cannot be beat. Especially when you live kinda far from the towers.
Quick Question, is channel 27 new? I have never received it until yesterday. I didn't move anything, but I now receive it. It is a univision.

Seeth Ransom 08-12-06, 11:54 AM Just a quick word on Dishes. Why does everyone think their ugly? I think they are quite small, and almost a status symbol today. It says, "I'm not going to let cable companies rob me anymore".
Back in the 80's they were ten feet wide, or more. I could understand the condo companies objections to that.
Times are changing, the people making these rules should change with them. I'm sure once one goes up, the others will soon follow with their own dish. It is only ugly if the other guy has it...

The dishes are not ugly, but the 1970's style rooftop antenna are a different story.
