I'm glad to see anything HD added...but I am really frustrated that we don't have FOX yet.

Just an observation, but KFRE WB 59's over the air digital signal has been much stronger lately, while their analog signal has been much weaker.

I sent an email to KMPH asking when they would be HD on Comcast. Here is the response I received on July 10.

"This will change very soon. We will be on Comcast HD in the next 30 days or so, possibly sooner. Thanks for writing."

I just joined the HDTV world and was excited to find that I get just about all the channels with an indoor antenna and nothing else. However, I can't pick up 30.1 at all. My 46E2000 has a diagnostic that shows the signal strength at 41, but I can't get any more out of it. Does anyone have a suggestion? I live near Fresno High (Palm and Clinton) and am about the same distance from all transmitters. Also, if a rooftop is my only hope can some suggest a place to go or who installs them in town? I got a rooftop at CC and they also installed it for a pretty reasonable price. I too could not get 30.1 to save my life, until now. They have a few different Terk models.

Its been my experience that channel 30 shows up very weak from here. Mostly blocking and and audio silence.

I picked up a Channel Master 3016 from Lowe's this afternoon and set it up on the roof, but before I actually attached it to the chimney or roof I checked the reception. It was no better for 30.1 and 53.1 than my little indoor antenna. What the heck is with using VHF if it seems to suck so bad? I pick up all the UHF signals I want, but none of the VHF. This is very frustrating.

What is the rated distance range of your TV antennae? Porterville is further away than Visalia. Perhaps being closer to the foothills may hamper the line of sight from the transmitter towers that is also located on the same mountain range.

I'm happy for you snatch, just stating an opinion, nothing personal :rolleyes: , Head Shot i'm using the DB8 antenna from www.antennasdirect.com thats rated at 70+ miles with a Channel Master rotator on the roof, every great once in a while i'll pickup 30HD on ch 9.3 but as you stated earlier the foothills are in the way, I can get all the other channels from Fresno to Bakersfield no problem, if I want to watch anything on ABC in HD i'll watch the B'field station.

No, in fact I can pick up Channel 30 on the UHF, but the signal is severely degraded. At times I can have pixel free clear broadcast fur usually for few hours at the most. Now much more of blackouts.

Wow, the Channel Master 3016 looks pretty much indentical to my RS model. Rather than changing antennas, I would double-check the antenna cable connections. Are you running a splitter or preamp? Are there any splices? (coax cable does not splice well at all). Have you tried testing the setup with a different cable?

I'm not exactly sure. I just started everything from scratch. I rewired the antenna, ran new RG6 cable and used new connectors. I pointed it toward Prather/Shaver and it worked.

You weren't "dreaming", I saw it too. I did notice though TNT-HD has shown up on the ON-Demand with 3 or 4 shows.

Has there been any update on the MPEG4 update for DirecTV in the Fresno area? I haven't kept tabs on that - been busy working on the new home theater.

Now that I am nearly done with that, I need to update my info on local HD and Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD.

By the way, anybody planning on coming over on the Saturday, August 26th?

Was it just me or did the Hall of Fame game seem blurry or out of focus at times during the game, seemed like at the start of any play it would be out of focus and then clear up, watched the game on OTA HD, :confused:

Currently I'm getting just the local HD channels through Comcast, paying the $5 extra for the box each month.

Is anyone using an HD TV Tuner Card or USB device in a PC that supports unencrypted QAM? If so, can you use that instead of using the comcast box to get local HD stations?

I'm making an HTPC and sooner or later would like to add an tuner card to make it an HD PVR, but need to know whether I can do it without the cable box for the local HD stations.

I'd go OTA, but the space for the antenna I have is in a built-in cabinet with a glass front (that we have to keep closed) above the TV and I don't know whether I'll get good reception or not.

If anyone has experience with QAM tuners please let me know!

Apparently all "analog" channels (2-99) are going to be available shortly (?) in true digital and located in the now-unused 300's channel section. We shall see. Some other California markets already have been upgraded to "all-digital" according to Comcast.

One piece of good news concerns Comcast and KMPH FOX 26. On Friday 8/4/06, I spoke to Charlie Pfaff, the GM @ KMPH. I had e-mailed the station a few days prior with questions/concerns over the lack of KMPH HD on Comcast. Mr. Pfaff resonded w/ his phone # and asked for me to call him asap.

According to Mr. Pfaff himself, KMPH/Pappas and Comcast have now reached an agreement and we can expect to see KMPH added to Comcast's Fresno/Visalia HD tier (Ch. 906, I'm assuming) within the next 30-45 days. It's about time!!!

Yes with a QAM you can pick up the unencrypted channels via Comcast, which basically includes the OTA networks (- Fox), and a couple others like the PPV ads.

From what I gather, the "all-digital" Chs. 2-99 will be located in the 300's area. The "analog" 2-99 will still be there for the time being.

Anyone else got more info on this?

In my continuing quest to watch CBS digital broadcast on my centralized MediaCenter system, I made contact with the new engineering staff at KGPE 47. They informed me that their new Logic Innovations MUX was just received last week. They plan to burn it in this weekend, and hope to have me test their stream this Wednesday. If all goes well, I should be watching CBS HD over a XBOX360 that evening! :) This new MUX should also allow KGPE to broadcast 47.2 again (stable this time).

Thanks for the update Toad! 47.1's signal for has been quite weak in the Hanford area during the past few weeks. I hope the new equipment will help out this problem as well. I know they are capable of transmitting a nice strong signal, but it keeps dropping out lately.

Just letting you know that CBS- KGPE 47.1 is back for MCE2005 users. I'm getting very good signal from where I live (Merced, Ca.) Thanks ToadMazter for continuing effort to make this happen. Now I can finally record some CBS-HD programs...yah...........

47.1 and 47.2 are back up at full strength in Hanford as well. No more dropouts, or at least not as many. When they do occur, I get a momentary freeze rather than a blank screen for several seconds like I did before.

Sorry all, I meant to update this post on Thursday... but I was in too much shock about seeing 47.1 again in its full glory on MCE. I guess the new MUX did the trick. Thank you KGPE engineering! Bring on the new fall lineups.

Noticed the other day on Comcast's on-screen guide that ch. 925's (HDSE) info bar stated that the HD feed from NFL Network was "coming soon". And this morning, said channel was running Universal HD, but no mention of NFL Network. Hmm....

Hey, your channel line-up is exactly like what I get from Hanford. Except that I was picking up digital 17.1 KGET from Bakersfield last week for a day or so.

What's the deal with digital channel 34? I get a very weak signal on that channel, but never any picture. Is there a station there or not? I think I used to get something there (HSN?) a long time ago but not any more.

47.1 is fading in and out for me again today (Sunday of Labor Day weekend). Had to switch to 47 analog to watch the US Open tennis match without it breaking up every 30 seconds.

While they've finally flipped the HD switch, and I seem to be getting a strong signal (23-27db on my OnAirGT), the picture is breaking up constantly. My Samsung T165 is showing a strong signal, but again same problem with video.

Posted my response from KMPH's GM Charlie Pfaff a few weeks back. At the time, Mr. Pfaff had stated to me over the phone (asked me to call him in an e-mail response) that KMPH and Comcast had finally reached an agreement and that KMPH would be part of the Comcast HD tier in "30-45 days". Not sure when this time frame actually started. Difficult to get any info from Comcast. My own best guess is that it COULD be happening around Sept 20. This is the same time that Comcast will finally add TNTHD (and dump INHD2).

All we can do now is wait and hope....and maybe bug KMPH via e-mail some more.

....or not. OTA has never worked well for me. I live in an area surrounded with very large trees and when I've used OTA antennas (indoor and 3 different outdoor), reception was marginal at best. Plus, Comcast HD/DVR subscribers get a dual tuner HD-DVR as their primary cable box for 10 bucks a month (DVR+HD fee combined). Recording some FOX programming is a must in this house!

And regarding Comcast and their broadcasting of Universal HD during the US Open---according to Comcast, there are no plans to make Universal HD a permanent part of their HD tier at this time. Bummer. Expect several HD NFL Network broadcasts on ch. 925 during the current NFL season, however.

Anybody here in Fresno successfully running a mythTV box with HD content?

I was going to go OTA (I even bought the pcHDTV 5500 capture card) but decided against it because of some people's stories with bad reception. Besides I think it's costing me $5 a month for the box (maybe 10) with comcast for the additional box.

I am trying to go with firewire on Comcast's Motorola DCT6200 to get recording and hopefully the non encrypted HD, but every time I come across a breakthrough in the mythTV area, I am met with another hardship. :)

SOOO, I say again. Anybody successfully running a MythTV box with HD content here in Fresno? If you are what setup are you running :p and would you be willing to give any help? possibly for a pcHDTV 5500?

Anyone else notice rolling bars on the digital CBS channel? The tend to only be noticeable on solid colored screens with text, like during commercials, but it is still somewhat annoying. Interestingly, the rolling bars are only there during SD broadcasts, but always go away during HD feeds. So are these rolling bars coming from the station? I see the exact same bars on both their analog and digital counterparts for SD. I don't see the rolling bars on other digital channels and it is definitely not my TV.

Let me just say that this is really a nice surprise! *FINALLY* we get KMPH in HD! I didn't even notice it until I was flipping through the channels just a little bit ago and did a doubletake. :)

Same for me, as well. In fact the ONLY local on Comcast's HD tier that reads on my receiver as "true" 5.1 is KFSN (ABC). It displays 5.1 all the time, although only the HD programming (LOST, GREY'S ANATOMY, ect.) plays back in 5.1. All SD programming comes thru the L/R/SUB only-no center or surrounds. All the other locals read as Dolby Digital at all times. My receiver decodes their signals to Pro Logic II, so I still get suround/center channel signals, but not "true" 5.1 (which is advertised as being in 5.1 on CBS shows like CSI).

Strange that KMPH is coming thru in 5.1 OTA but not Comcast. Guessing this is an issue w/ Comcast. Lifted96Chevy, do your other locals read as 5.1 via Comcast?

Whether or not this is truly the case is up in the air, but I was told that the fact that the HD locals that don't show up as being in 5.1 (KMPH being the one in question-being 5.1 OTA, not via cable) has to do with how the station's signal is sent to Comcast thru the cable. So apparently lack of 5.1 is an issue to be taken up with the local stations, not Comcast.

I do remember when I first was receiving KFSN HD (ABC) via Comcast, that my receiver always displayed that a 5.1 signal was coming thru, but the audio-even on HD programming-only came thru L/R only....not even the subwoofer. Made LOST sound kinda tinny. Situation did get resolved and has worked just fine for quite some time now. So perhaps the KMPH 5.1 issue could get resolved at some point in the future. What about our CBS and NBC affiliates? Do they broadcast 5.1 OTA?

Yeah, I haven't recieved a 5.1 signal through the Comcast box ever for those stations....

Strange that KMPH is coming thru in 5.1 OTA but not Comcast. Guessing this is an issue w/ Comcast. Lifted96Chevy, do your other locals read as 5.1 via Comcast?


Actually, tonight Celebrity Duets came through in 5.1 via Comcast.....maybe someone is reading our threads!!! :D:D As for other stations I've gotten KFSN 903 in 5.1, but until tonight, no other local channels in 5.1....well besides 908, but that programming isn't the same as the regular channel 8 is it??

Anybody here in Fresno successfully running a mythTV box with HD content?

I was going to go OTA (I even bought the pcHDTV 5500 capture card) but decided against it because of some people's stories with bad reception. Besides I think it's costing me $5 a month for the box (maybe 10) with comcast for the additional box.

I am trying to go with firewire on Comcast's Motorola DCT6200 to get recording and hopefully the non encrypted HD, but every time I come across a breakthrough in the mythTV area, I am met with another hardship. :)

SOOO, I say again. Anybody successfully running a MythTV box with HD content here in Fresno? If you are what setup are you running :p and would you be willing to give any help? possibly for a pcHDTV 5500?

Also anybody know the "channel frequency table" for Fresno comcast?

I'm also interested in building a mythTV box, but with an AirStar HD5000AV-PCI card that supports QAM. Supposedly MythTV works with this out of the box.

Just spoke to a Comcast Support rep online. She didn't have any info as to when this was happening other than the usual "sometime this year" but that subscribers would get a msg on their box (or in their bill) stating which channels would be affected. Had been told some time back by Comcast that ch.s 2-99 (or at least the ones not already repeated digitally-HBO, etc) would be simulcast in the 300's channel block.

My experience w/ Comcast has been that at least when they announce something, it really does EVENTUALLY happen. Having been a VOOM subscriber in the past-where all the promises they made never happened-I've tended to be skeptical. But Comcast has come thru so far w/ their programming promises--they just take their sweet time going about things. ;)

Apparently the digital/analog simulcast has happened already in other Comcast markets. I may be wrong but I believe Northern CA (Sacto/Stockton) may have this. They did have ON DEMAND months before we did here, so that may be the case.

KFRE-DT was indeed broadcasting 1080i last night for the CW launch. Too bad the network didn't send the ET special in HD.

What's the deal with KFRE (Ch. 905)today? Yesterday everything was normal. The picture was 4:3 with black bars on the sides with SD material. Today, all SD shows are stretched to fill the screen(16:9). Very annoying.

Also, if you check your guide to view programming for one or two days ahead of time, almost everything says "to be announced". I wonder if something is going to happen soon. I could always check the guide for programming two to three weeks in advance, but not now. :confused:

Welcome to the world of "Stretch-o-vision"! Don't know that they still do this, but TNTHD used to do the same for all it's SD programming back in the days when I was a VOOM subscriber. Guess we Comcast people will know the answer after 9/20.

I have my TV set up so that all SD channels are viewed w/ the set's gray bars on either side (in the hopes to avoid burn-in). Switches to full screen automatically when tuned to HD channels. Ch 903 actually displayed with the gray bars at first, then switched over to the full-screen mode-black bars. Tuned in today to find the "stretch" going on. Kind of annoying, isn't it? We shall see if this gets rectified soon.

I get KAIL even though I live right near the Stanislaus/Merced County Line, I get KAIL and KMAX in Newman. But yeah, I was bummed they didn't have Star Trek on KAIL in HD, just the standard SD format. Same goes with KMAX-TV in Sacramento.

Last night KFRE was broadcasting in HD, but what is up with that large CW logo ,not in the very corner but closer to the center of the screen. I never have seen this position of a logo before .I hope they change this soon. Does anyone know if KAIL has any plans to go HD?

Ok, watched Reba and Tyra Banks(only a couple minutes worth...honestly! :eek: ), and something doesn't look right. Can't put my finger on it. The black bars are still there, but it does not appear to be 4:3 mode. Sort of in between 4:3 and full widescreen (16x9) Images appear slightly distorted and chunky.

TNT HD's repeat programs such as Without a Trace and Law and Order look really good. Some grain is visible. But am pleased with how it looks so far. :cool:

Just spoke to a Comcast online rep. Looks like INHD2 ch. 920 is now permanently deleted from their HD lineup. Ch 920 is currently only broadcasting color bars. Ch 925 (HDSE) is broadcasting the same programming as INHD ch 919. Online rep had no info at this time as to what may be put in INHD2's place, but that the loss of INHD2 coincided with the addition of TNTHD.

It has helped that KFSN is an ABC O&O. KGPE and KSEE still don't pass through the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, which I've enjoyed for years now from KFSN.

KMPH passes 5.1 when the network sends it. It remains to be seen how KFRE will handle DD5.1.

Did any of you guys check out Kill Bill Vol. 1 on TNT HD tonight? What a freaking joke. lol :D Stretch-o-vision is here! :p I couldn't watch more than a few minutes before turning the channel.

It was heavily edited(of course) to the point of renaming the P**** Wagon :eek: to Party Wagon. I laughed out loud when I saw the name on the back of the truck. Too funny.

It was working the other night now all my HDTV's and my computer give me absolutely no TV signal for OTA. It use to be working but now its not. All day it has been out.

KFRE digtal was off for me too, yesterday. It is now back on.

I don't own a digital box, but I was always able to receive NBC and CBS on subchannels on 80. But for the past two days, it says 'Channel Not Found'. Did Comcast move these stations? FOX is on 100 and ABC is still on 109.

When you're tuned to KGPE, try changing the subchannel. KSEE-DT is 80.1, and KGPE-DT is 80.2.

1-2 is actually 80.2. Something weird going on with remapping there. Is this your TV tuner, or a PC card?

Try the subchannel when tuned to 1-2.

David Ortiz - I'm using the internal tuner in my Panny Plasma. It seems like they are moving a few channels around... I occasionally channel surf in the digital range from 76-116 and throughout the day, there will be a few more or less channels... The channels that hiwind listed have been constant (except for the recent addition of 1-2).

I'm using a MyHD PC card. I get KGPE on 1-2 if I use auto scan in virtual channel mode. But I can enter in 80-1 and 80-2 directly and I get both KSEE and KGPE that way. I just checked all of the channels tonight.

I looked for FSN-Bay Area, but it must be encrypted by now.

Back in the early times of Comcast HD INHD's were not encrypted and could be found on 102-1 and 102-2. Last night I could get 102-1 during the A's game however no sound, have seen this before from time to time. Now when the games aren't on its blank.

I have a new TV in the bedroom and its the one that does this the living room set says channel encrypted. The bedroom set also says encrypted but will show the picture.

I have two sets a Toshiba 57hx93 with QAM (three years old) and a new Toshiba 30" direct view with QAM. With the first set I couldn't get NBC and would get CBS as 1-2. Then about 6 months ago I started to get them as 80-1 and 80-2. However when I checked last night it reverted back to the way it was only getting CBS on 1-2. When you manually enter 80-1 or 80-2 it will remap to 1-2.

Now on the new Toshiba it works just fine. Must just be something with older tuners and whatever Comcast is doing.

I won a sales contest with my company last spring, and the award was a 42" Plasma TV. Although I already have two HD sets, the TV in the kid's playroom was still an old SD CRT so I was pretty excited. When reading the specs, I saw that the model (LG 42PC3DC) included a QAM tuner, so I was anxious to see if I could get PBS Sprout, ToonDisney, and DiscoveryKids. Those three channels are the only reason I still rent a cable box.

Well... the TV arrived yesterday (6 months after notification of award, but who am I to complain about a free TV?) So last night I huffed the old Panasonic 32" CRT (ouch!) out of the playroom, and then connected the new LG. I did a digital cable channel scan and found a few stations that were viewable, but didn't find the three I was looking for. Anybody know how those Fresno Comcast channels map? Are they encrypted?

Here's the rest of the story... I failed to measure the space in the playroom when I read the TV specs (I guess only looked at the tuner/brightness/inputs/etc... but not the dimensions, :o ), so when I set it on the shelf it blocked the drawers on either side. Definitely failed the WAF!!! (She CAN complain about the free TV :rolleyes: ) So... anybody want a like new LG 42PC3DC? It was only turned on for 20 minutes, out of the box less than 90 minutes. I'll sell it at a bargain, just want enough to cover a decent 37" LCD from a local shop. PM me if interested!

I did a rescan. CBS is still on 1-2, but I think it always was, even when 80-2 was readable. But my QAM tuner still can't receive 80-1 and 80-2. It was working perfectly for me for months ever since I purchased the TV in May, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

i caught 82-7 today which was csi miami, but hey football was on the real cbs!, i think i got someones VOD - how come noone rents pr0n in my neighborhood lol

Saw the Comcast msg today regarding programming changes. On/around 10/26 Comcast will add both MTVHD and Universal HD to it's HD tier.

Also losing several SD digital premium channels. Looks like some (but not all) of the east coast feeds from HBO, Showtime, Encore, Starz will be removed on the same date. Perhaps Comcast is freeing up some bandwith space for their continuing project of going "all-digital"?

I think I know the answer to your question, but since everyone ignores my questions, I'm not going to tell you. Just kidding : )

KFSN is VHF, so you need an antenna that is designed to pick up VHF signals. I have a UHF roof antenna that picks up everything perfectly except channel 30. So I ended up having to get a new antenna just for that one station.

It's probably worth it though, since KFSN is the most reliable OTA station, plus you get other programming on 30.2 and 30.3.

Not all CBS network programming is 1080i, the "reality shows" survivor, big brother, amazing race, etc.. are upconverted and some of the sports, BUT all the drama shows are 1080i and KGPE passes them thru.

We currently do not pass 5.1 surround sound and we are not passing the descriptive audio for the blind.

The day time shows that CBS does not own, (Judge Judy, Geraldo, etc) are also not available on HD, so they are upconverted.

If network makes HD available, we are passing it on 47.1

I just wanted to clarify a point. KGPE-DT isn't sending out 1080i. They are broadcasting a 720x480i signal flagged as 16:9. That's why your STB shows it as widescreen.

The MyHD card will stretch it back to 4:3 if you play with res and aspect ratio. I couldn't stand to watch it stretched off my HD100.

Additionally, the engineering department is trying to get HD ready for the Superbowl. I'm not sure if that's OTA only or Comcast carriage as well.

I'm pretty sure that Big Papi understands that KGPE-DT is passing a 1080i signal when CBS sends it.

At least one things for sure, when I left the Bay area in late May/June 2002, I had many stations which included then NBC now MyTV affiliate KRON-TV, The then newly NBC (evil traitor) affiliate KNTV (where CRAIG HERERRA! left KFSN-TV in June, 2005 and KRIS SANCHEZ! left KGPE-TV Feburary, 2004) , and KGO (Where Erik Rosales left KGPE-TV in September, 2004). But now it has a much decent team and hopefully it stays that way.

What's is up with CBS not broadcasting NFL games in HD lately? For the last couple of weeks, the Raiders' games has been in SD. I'm a Niners' fan, so it doesn't bother me that much since Fox always show their games in HD, but it was very disappointing to not see their beating of the Raiders in HD!

From what I've gathered, CBS only broadcasts the most "desirable" games in HD. But, yes FOX does do ALL their games in HD.

Being a lowly (and sad) Raiders fan, the only HD game on tap for Oakliand is the NBC Sunday night game next week.

KGPE's SD signal should have the 5.1 audio and a new subchannel for most Clear Channel stations such as KGPE, KCOY, KION, KGET, etc. But the actual sign said "Coming soon 47.2 and then KGPE 47.2 Fresno/Visalia/Merced"

I think you might be stuck. I tried nearly everything to get that darn channel without an outdoor antenna and nothing did it. I finally was able to get all the channels in the area with an outdoor antenna though. Cheap, easy to install and works like a charm. If apartments must allow satellites, why wouldn't they be required to allow antennas?

CBS is lagging. FOX is stomping them in the HD sports content. I just think it's unacceptable that the games aren't in HD. If the NFL is going to dictate what games we are FORCED to watch then the least it can do is make them in HD.

So, it's pretty funny that the "chief" engineer gets on and responds to an old thread in a defensive manner, yet his station doesn't pass on the 5.1 sound and won't show Sunday football games in HD.

It seems to be a broadcast issue, so Comcast customers are not affected. KGPE is still coming in at full strength for me in Hanford.

So to any KGPE engineers out there, whatever you are doing, keep doing it. I'd rather get full-power SD, rather than HD that drops out every 20 seconds.

Well, I guess they are back in HD, as of 10/20/06, at around 80% signal strength. 47.2 is also on the air, with a "Coming Soon" announcement. So I hope they have finally sorted things out over there. I had been having dropout problems with them for at least the last 6 months, and had completely given up on tuning them in.

If you are using Comcast HD boxes, expect to see some new firmware loaded to them around 3:30 tomorrow am.

MTV HD and Universal HD will also be available on channels 928 and 927 next Tuesday AM.

Like the new Comcast updates. Looks about the same, but a bit more user-friendly. More program info jammed onto the screen. Seems that the FF/REW DVR functions are much faster than before. And noticed the On Demand functions (FF/REW/Pause/Play/Stop) are now more like those of the DVR. Just wish you could do the "10-seconds back" function, too.

Video quality of the current tuned program in the top left corner when accessing guide/menu seems to be lessened (kinda choppy), but that doesn't bother me--just noticed it, that's all.

Now if I could just get the occasional "locking up" of the box (remote button pushes sometimes don't respond immediately--multiple commands are sometimes delayed then catch up all at once) to stop. Not a firmware issue, I realize, but apparently a "remote buffer" (?) issue w/ the Motorola units. Anyone know if swapping HD-DVRs would be a fix? Intend to swap my current Moto 6412 that I've had for about 18 months (DVI out only) for one w/ HDMI out.

Just got the KVPT signal on channel 40-1 and 40-2. Although it looks like their signals drop every now and again. Is there any way to solve that problem?

Try re-aiming your antenna. From Hanford, most of the Fresno transmitters are basically due north. However, KVPT and KMPH are about 30-40 degrees further east. If you rotate further east, you may also pick up the Catholic channel 49 (can't remember their call letters).

Us Comcast types actually have a pretty decent HD selection these days. 6 HD locals-covering all the networks, 9 "cable" and /or sports and events channels, premium HD (if you're payin' for it--HBO for me) and HD stuff On Demand. :D

Yeah, but at least KVPT-DT works too. I also get some of the Bakersfield channels as well such as KGET-DT 25 as well as the secondary CW channel on KGET. Cahnnel 49 is KNXT which was previously the call letters for the now KCBS-TV. Finally KBAK-DT, KERO-DT and KUVI-DT works well too but at least with KVPT, it works fine now. KGPE-DT works good too although I'm wondering what will air on their DT-2 channel?

are any of you guys having issues with 30.1? i can get vid, but the audio is jacked..nothign but bass. 24.1 26.1 and 47.1 come in fine, and its only this station...any ideas?

If so, it would seem that using an outdoor antenna is pretty much a requirement for KFSN.

I'm using an outdoor antenna in Hanford and KFSN is probably the only station that NEVER breaks up, despite broadcasting three different frequencies (30.1, 30.2, and 30.3).

On a side note, KNXT 49 seems to be down this weekend, at least for me.

im using an indoor....i just moved last weekend and before that in my old place i was able to get all of the digital chans with my indoor antenna, but since i moved i cant get chan 30.1, but my signal on all the others is much stronger. dunno why...i only moved 1.6 miles SE of where i was before.

welp i got 30.1 workin correctly off my indoor antenna...all i did was move it from one side of my entertainment center to the other, and i moved the ears a lil bit and ta-da i get em all. sound is fine

KFSN was a huge OTA problem for me a couple of yrs ago w/ both rooftop and indoor antennas. Actually all OTA wasn't great unless the weather was pristine(my house is surrounded by really big trees in all directions). Cable was a lifesaver! However, I've noticed that KFSNHD via Comcast is still the most "glitchy" at times. It's rare that I see an episode of LOST w/o at least one momentary audio dropout/pixel blocking hiccup. Is the problem on KFSN's end or w/ Comcast? And do any other Comcast subscribers have this problem?

Best info that I could get from Comcast recently was that the analog-to-digital conversion was "underway" in most markets and should be expected to be 100% complete by 1st quarter 2007. "Analog" premium channels (HBO,SHOWTIME, ect.) were deleted from the 2-99 tier a month or so ago. Tuning to those channels now gives you a looped message redirecting viewers to the "new" locations in the 500 channel block.

The existing 2-99 programming will eventually make it's way over to the now-unused 200 or 300 tiers. The analog 2-99 will apparently be simulcast along w/ the digital versions until the FCC-mandated death of analog TV in '08 or '09. This may make a difference in PQ for these channels, although even some digital SD can look crappy on a big HDTV. Let's hope they don't compress the crap out of these digital simulcast signals.

edit: Just spoke to an online Comcast rep. Told me that the last CA area to complete the ADS (analog/digital simulcast) was Davis. My area (Fresno/Visalia) was still listed as "To Be Determined", but that by mid-'07, Comcast expected all of their ADS projects to be complete.

I came across this forum when I recently ditched Comcast because of their, in my opinion, unethical billing practices such as doubling their monthly cost after they give you a 6-12 month deal. After the monthly deal ends, they intentionally sneak an outrageous monthly price that they expect you to pay from then on. I had been getting their 6-12 month special deals for around 3 years until here recently when they wouldn't budge on their pricing.

I feel ya when it comes to the cost of Comcast. But after my own research into cable vs. satellite vs. OTA for HD, Comcast still came out ahead. Both DirecTV and Dish want a non-refundable deposit (around $200) to LEASE an HD-DVR box. And buying one (satellite or stand-alone OTA) is even more costly. Comcast, on the other hand, supplies you w/ a dual tuner HD-DVR as your primary cable box. Satellite (at the time, don't know the situation at this time) also required an OTA antenna to get some if not all the HD locals in the Fresno area. This was an issue for me since I live in an older neighborhood w/ lots of big, old trees on all sides. Both indoor and outdoor antennas gave me intermitent at best signal quality when the weather was nice. Wind and rain reduced most local signals to pixels. Since Comcast finally picked up KMPH HD (and KRFE as well), my HD locals are now pretty much rock solid signals that are run thru the DVR. Add that to the fact that Comcast actually has a pretty nice list of HD programming (and the highly addictive OnDemand, as well) and it seems that what they charge isn't too bad. I pay around $95/month for digital cable that includes HBO, Encore, HD and a HD-DVR. The charge for HD and DVR equals 9 bucks per month---less than either satellite providers charge just for their HD packages. Add more per month for the DVR fee.

Switching to satellite, for me, would not save me any more than a couple of bucks a month. And I'd still have to cough up the dough to lease a HD-DVR and would lack the OnDemand features. All this coupled with having to potentially use an OTA antenna for some local HD/digital stuff just shows me that Comcast is--for now, at least---the way to go HD. And the argument that satellite often offers up---"We are ALL DIGITAL, unlike digital cable"---is just lame. First off, most SD programming-analog or digital-is going to potentially look kinda crappy on a big HD set. And Comcast is in the process of implementing their ADS (analog/digital simulcast) right now. Fresno area should expect to see analog ch. 2-99 simulcast in all-digital sometime in early '07.

Just to let you know the present deal on Direct TV as I was on the phone with a Customer Service Rep (CSR) yesterday trying to iron out "ALL" of the fees that were included with their service. It was like an act of congress to get any info out of this CSR as I had to be very specific with my questions which was driving me nuts with her. She was being very hesitant on her responses when I asked her about the $100 rebate that they have. And when I asked her about the Programming Fees, she was again hesitant with her answer. She was making me feel like no one ever asked her these questions before. Since I don't like CSRs who hold back information, I tried to think of as many questions to ask her, just because I could. ;)

Heck, there were some questions that I asked again from earlier in our discussion.
Now that I think of it, I think I'll call back again right now and ask the questions all over again just to see if anything has changed. I can't think of a better way to spend your time while on vacation! (HaHa)

Totally! Phone reps for either satellite or cable usually strike me as a step below trained monkeys. Often never have their info straight. Just there to sign you up for service.

Comcast does have online CSRs that I've had better luck with. They seem to have access to specific info as opposed to just being a telemarketing operator.

Believe me, if I could get everything I'm getting from Comcast thru satellite I would switch. Esp. if there was a "newbie" price deal. Used to have both Dish and, for a short time, VOOM. And liked them both. But it seems that as of late, satellite has been asleep at the wheel while cable surpasses them with their various services. Don't get me wrong, there are still negatives w/ Comcast. I do know that their HD signals, for example, are sometime a bit more compressed than those over satellite/OTA. But a slight decrease in PQ (and I do mean SLIGHT) vs. all the positives makes cable an easy choice for me.

I think it also means that depending on your zip code wise if you have a zip code such as 932--934--, territorial wise, the best chance your regional sports network you will get is from FSN West or Prime FSN ticket. If you live in a zip code like 95--- or 937-- then you live somewhere between FSN Bay area or Basketballwise you will get coverage from Sacramento Kings instead of the Warriors.

That sucks so much. I can still catch the games on 37 but on 920 it is blacked out. Love the Warriors more than the Kings. FSN HD (920) broadcasts San Jose Sharks games and USC and other college football games too. Seen them broadcast a few times. Is there any way I can demand they broadcast Warriors games? Give them an ear full until they make it happen.

Is 18.2 OTA the same as the regular SD broadcast KVPT? "Analog" KVPT (Ch.8) on Comcast is generally awful, sound-wise.

And what's up w/ KFSNHD? Fairly constant audio drop-outs. Do those who get it OTA have this, or is this just a Comcast issue?

18.2 is PBS-HD. They usually play the same thing that's on regular channel 18 during prime time, except it's in HD. During the rest of the day, they play alot of repeats, but one good thing is that there's almost no kids programming.

I had not noticed any unusual audio dropouts on KFSN, but I think all the HD stations do a sort of "reset" several times an hour where the screen goes blank for a split second and the audio sort of cuts out for half a syllable or so. At least on my WalMart OTA box, that's what seems to happen 2-3 times per hour. I'm pretty used to it and hardly even notice it any more.

KFSN 30 has poor signal transmission for me to enjoy OTA> I don't even bother to check once in a while. I now just use the HD DVD for 99.9% of the time.

I would think you would have no problem picking up KFSN from Visalia with a decent outdoor antenna that is VHF-capable. Plus the Bakersfield DT stations if you use a rotor.

Did KFSN switch their channel to VHF? I have UHF outdoor on top of 2nd story.

KFSN-DT broadcasts over channel 9. I can't pick them up at all with one of those rectangular UHF antennas in Hanford. So I had to get a UHF/VHF model at Radio Shack ($60) just for KFSN. Now KFSN is probably my most reliable signal.

I don't know if you would be willing to upgrade your antenna just to pick up 30.1,30.2, and 30.3, but that's what you'll probably have to do.

KAIL-DT broadcasts over channel 7, do you pick them up at all? I think KAIL and KFSN are the only two VHF stations in the Fresno area, there may be others in Bakersfield.

So your Channelmaster Quantum is a VHF compatible antenna, I take it. Never messed with any pre-amps (I'm too cheap) although I could probably use one on certain windy days when certain channels start break up.

Does anyone know what the deal is with channel 43 (KGMC-DT)? I seem to remember getting a weak signal there a long time ago. I believe it was a home shopping channel. Now I get up to a 40% signal (which fades in and out) but never any picture. So is there a station there or not?

Do any of you people is Fresno/Clovis pick up channel 43 KGMC-DT? Or at least a signal with no picture like I do?

KUVI My45 in Bakersfield picks up 80-90% of the time so I don't have a problem with them at a ll. Most other Bakersfield stations 17,23,29,45 and 58 are pulling in well too and is used as backup if a Fresno station has technical difficulties or blacks ot a program.

Well, 47.2 KGPE is finally broadcasting some programming. Looks like some pretty lame stuff. I saw a program last night about RV caravans driving to Dead Horse, Alaska. Was this an info-mercial? It sure looked and sounded like one, but I'm not sure. And then they have commercials during the suspected info-mercial. I want my 30 minutes back.

I don't think I'll be watching this channel too much, unless they can come up with something a little more interesting than what I saw.

I'm new to this post and I'm looking for some input on DBS (Directv/Dish Network) HD options for the Fresno and Shaver Lake area.

I currently have Directv here in Fresno and I'm curious to hear feedback about the MPEG4 HD locals for the Fresno area and if anyone has had any problems with these channels. I'm looking to upgrade to HD programming for my system and get the new HR20 HD-DVR.

As well, my parents live in Shaver Lake and have Dish Network. I'm helping them upgrade to an HD system, but because they cannot get any OTA signals it would appear that Directv is their only option for local HD channels (does anyone know if Dish Network will add HD locals for Fresno anytime soon?).

Therefore, if anyone can share their experiences with the Direct HD locals, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your assistance!

Well thanks to KGPE-TV having their programming on I think the same goes with KGET-TV because they have such identical programming aside from the fact they have the CW programming on the digital subchannel. But at least it looks very good. Thank god KFSN-TV has very good weather channels. The 30-3 WeatherNow and 24-2 Weather Plus looks fantastic! But anyway, It's the best!

I am wanting to get Bakersfield and Modesto channels, Looking for a powerful outdoor antenna. I have electric power where I plan to mount to antenna.

I take back my earlier comments about the "lame" programs on 47.2 KGPE. Last night they had some pretty good old movies. And right now they are playing an old episode of Bonanza. Pretty imaginative stuff, compared with what KSEE and KFSN are doing with their multicast sister stations. I guess the dilemma stations have is to provide decent programming on their secondary stations, but not so good that people stop watching the prime time network shows.

How 'bout some public access programming, KGPE? That might be interesting, and civic-minded too. Plus it would not cause substantial numbers of viewers to stop watching regular programming on the primary station.

I guess I'm the only one posting here, so I will shut up for a while.


47.2 was set up as a local access channel for anybody who can create some good programming in the area. KGPE is already in contact with Fresno State and the school districts to see if they can produce anything for air.

As for KGPE trying to generate anything, our production equipment is very limited and is mostly dedicated to the local news.

If somebody has anything out there that is of broadcast quality, the channel is available.

I wish I could say sometime soon, but with Clear Channel selling all it's TV stations, I truthfully do not know.

Wow, in a bit of irony, the KMPH news just announced that tomorrow Dish Network subscribers will no longer recieve KMPH 26 and KFRE 59 via the dish. The report said that while Dish charges subscribers $6 a month for local channels, they didn't want to pay Pappas Telecasting $.20 per subscriber a month to carry the broadcasts. The ironic part was they recommended Dish subscribers who wish to watch 26 and 59, view via the OTA antenna, or switch to Comcast!! :D:D

shawndang, i'm using the DB8 antenna from www.antennasdirect.com with a ChannelMaster rotator and i'm picking up all the channels between Fresno and Bakersfield with good results,allows me to pickup the ABC HD feed out of B'field since I can't get Fresnos ABC HD feed. :D

Fresno ABC broadcasts in the VHF range, I believe at # 10 or lower, should pick ou if using STB tuner and sweep for channels.

I am not by my tv but I think I get channel number 9. This radio shack antenna pulls VHF also.

Either the cable has a break or bad connection, you are not pointing in the right direction (check antennaweb.org for the exact direction of the local transmitters), or there is some HUGE obstruction blocking your reception. If it is an obstruction, I don't think a fancier antenna would help. Rather, you might need a taller mast or a different spot on the roof.

BTW, I believe the VHF channels are 2-13 and 14-83 are UHF.

I think I'll try the CM. Every great once in a while I would pickup ABC30 in HD on Ch.9.3 or 9.2 but I use Ch.10.3 for the ABC HD feed out of B'field, I was told earlier that I probably couldn't pick it up because of the mountain ranges between Porterville and the X-mitter :(

I had a coaxial cable for years that had been badly spliced together. My reception was TERRIBLE, but I just assumed it was the trees blocking me. Replaced the cable for for like 15 bucks and the reception improved unbelievably. With the bad cable, reception was almost as bad as with no antenna at all.

I think I may have it backwards then, I have the widest part of antenna away from the transmitter. I think I need to do a 180. Also I installed my Antenna on my second story deck. Basically my antenna's view to the north is some what blocked by my house. I get about 10 channels so not too bad.

I wanted to do a simple install, cause I'll be moving to Brighton Crest across from Table Mountain Casino in about 2 months. That moves me up about another 10 miles closer to the transmitters.

Had the TV Re-Scan and 24-1 and 24-2 are coming in now. I just have to fine tune my Antenna tommorow for 18-1, 18-2, and 44-1. These three come in but there are large rectangles on the screen and the sound is choppy. Hopefully I'll fix these tommorow.

If you go to Antennaweb.org, they show you which direction the various transmitters are. If I remember correctly, 44.1 is a fairly weak station that transmits from the valley floor to the west somewhere toward Madera. I can't get that station to come in very good either. With the leaves falling off the trees, I have gone from a weak signal with no picture to a weak signal with a choppy picture.

18, 24 and 26 have transmitters which are in the mountains but a bit further south than the rest of the stations. So if you have problems with those stations turn your antenna to the right a few degrees. You also might pick up 49.1 KNXT (UHF channel 50) if they ever get their transmitter fixed.

If possible, go with an outdoor rooftop antenna that is VHF and UHF compatible. I can virtually guarantee that the $60 Radio Shack model linked above will work, provided you have no major obstructions (like a multi-story building next door) in your reception path.

Are you living in house, townhome or apartment?

If in house , place a shorter( also cheaper )range UHF/VHF antennae that you can get at RadioShack and buy the cable at length that you have previously estimated. If you want to DIY the cable just get RG-6 terminals that you can crimp with good 'ol bull nose pliers. Since you're in Fresno just get the 30-40 miles version antennae, in-line signal booster may not be needed here. Perch this inside your attic space, hanging this is not essential.

This way IS cheaper than those $ 100 Terk's models.

Wow, I would check my setup. And you're in Fresno? I get KSFN fine in Hanford. Someone else had their antenna facing the wrong way, I would check that. Also, make sure you are pointing toward the KSFN transmitters (use Antennaweb.org and a compass).

The only other thing I could think of is a bad coaxial cable or a bad splice. I always try to use a brand new store bought cable with the original connectors on each end. Even if you have the crimping tool for putting on a threaded connector, the original factory ones are always better than ones I try to attach, even if the cable is a little longer than you need.

I have 3 or 4 short lengths (3-6 feet) of coaxial cable that I tested on my antenna signal coming out of a splitter. Some of the cables I made myself with short pieces of coaxial cable I had laying around, to which I attached coaxial cable connectors from Radio Shack using a special crimper tool. I also tested various factory-made coaxial cable that came with VCR's and other devices.

It was amazing how much difference which cable I used made with really weak stations. I got much better results with the cables with factory-attached ends than the ones I made myself. But some of the factory ones were not too good either. So, bottom line is, if you are trying to pull in a borderline signal, the cable can make all the difference in the world.

I guess its also possible you could be in a bad spot where a big mountain or building is blocking you, but I really doubt it. If the obstruction were close by, it would be pretty obvious. And far-away obstructions are usually not a factor because the signals seem to find their way around them.

I would like to ask you guys something. When the 2/17/2009 date comes and all analog stations turn off for good, will all stations be forced to change their stations on the dial?

Does anyone else here get blurry pictures from ABC college Football?

I sure do, and I read somewhere else here on AVS that it is an encoder problem from our local ABC station(something about it being set to automatic). I e-mailed the engineer this info - never received a response back.

It being a local issue makes since to me since ESPN doesn't have the problem and they share the same productions.

Yeah, but I think that KFSN-DT signal can have some problems from time to time but most of the times, it works out just fine.

Those with Comcast probably already were aware of this, but for any CSI fans the way to watch is OnDemand. The only HD CBS show available OnDemand right now is the original CSI, but you do get it in HD, with only 2 short single-sponser commercials, and--important to Fresno area KGPE HD viewers---it's audio is Dolby Digital 5.1 (unlike our local CBS-HD signal). Kinda cool, too, is that the episodes (which come available the day after 1st airing) stay available for a few weeks. Can watch 2-3 in a row that way.

Wish ABC would do that w/ LOST. Or FOX w/ 24. You can watch 'em on your computer, but that's just not the same.

I heard from a source close to Channel 18 that they are looking to use one of their digital subchannels for spanish broadcasts of PBS and other public broadcasting shows in the near future. I'm not sure if that is what 18.3 is for right now, but you should look for that soon.

I've noticed more pixelation overall on CBS via Comcast, too. Same with me as with you on FOX from them--great picture and 5.1 (unlike KGPE!).

Just got a chance to see KFSN-TV's HD broadcasts of J! and WoF last night in HD. I noticed that some of the episodes of Wheel and Jeopardy! are Widescreen on the analog channels on some episodes. Are they doing this because of the fact that they are now in HD or are they doing this for other purposes?

CBS's HD NFL is rather poor. Only a small handful of HD games (most not aired here) and really pixelatted when they are, either via OTA or Comcast.

Too bad that FOX is NFC (unless you're a Niners fan, of course). NBC SNF and ESPN's MNF are both good as always. Just wish KSEE and KGPE would start passing their network's 5.1 audio. KFSN and KMPH manage to do so.

I am using a radio shack antenna of OTA hd. I just got a Panny 50" plasma can I split the antenna signal to feed both tvs? Is it simply a matter of getting a coax splitter 1 in 2 out? Would I need any pre amps etc?

The signal may be reduced to the point that some of the weaker stations won't come or will break up. Go ahead and try a splitter and see if it works OK for you. When I tried splitting the signal from the roof antenna, I lost a couple of weak stations.

I have never used a preamp, so I can't comment there. I did try a cheap $20 signal amplifier from Radio Shack, but it was worse than using nothing at all.

One possible solution if the splitter weakens the signal too much is to run a second wire from the antenna to the second TV.

Some people on this site poo-poo-ed the idea, saying that it would not work any better than a splitter, but I have had excellent results doing this.

Anyone using an OTA antenna having problems with KMPH at 10 PM everynight with the news not kicking in until a few minutes into the broadcast??? Happens on 906 on Comcast but regular analog 6 works....kind of frustrating as I miss the top stories sometimes....

I think KFSN has the ability to run HD in-house (they broadcast some local documentary in HD recently). Would think that "Your Local News in High Def" would be seen as a ratings/buzz grabber for a local station.

For those using Comcast digital cable service, how reliable is your On Demand service? Our On Demand service never work. Every time we try it, we always get "communication error" or "Meta-6" error.

I've called customer service four times and each time they said they were going to send updates to our cable boxes and reset them, but each time it never work. After that, I finally just said #$^& it because personally I don't care for On Demand stuffs and didn't want to schedule a tech to come out and look at it because that has always been a pain in the ass.

However, the family has been hounding me to get this fix because they want to use the service. What normally is the problem with On Demand not working? Is it the boxes (2 HD and 1 SD - don't know the models offhand since I'm at work) or the lines?

Used to do just what you describe about 1 out of 6-7 times. Far less recently. Usually around midnight, if ever. My guess any current holdups for me have to do with Comcast sending some signal out to the box (guide updates, msgs, etc). Have also noticed some programming start then say "Not Available".

Comcast still has some bugs. Don't even get me started on the Motorola HD DVR! :rolleyes:

Most of the on-location news footage I see looks pretty bad, I guess due to poor lighting and the general lack of control over the shooting environment. I'm not sure if HD cameras would make too much difference. Plus, it's probably expensive to replace all the existing SD equipment. Like the microwave transmitters on the news trucks. I bet they would have to be upgraded, as well as the cameras.

Maybe they will start out just having the studio shots in HD, but the news stories in SD.

I think there will be lots of switching between 16:9 HD footage and 4:3 SD footage. You see that quite a bit on Good Morning America, where the studio shots are in all HD, but most (or all) of the news story footage is in 4:3 SD.

I guess the switchover will happen eventually, but it's gonna take awhile.

I've noticed the previous posts about Channel 47's pixellation problems on CBS HDTV programs. I'm watching the Patriots/Jets game right now and is horrible. I have a Directv HR20 HD-DVR with mpeg4 HD locals and OTA capability. I began watching the game on 47.1 OTA (about 90-100% signal strength on my indoor antenna) and I noticed all of the pixellation problems. I thought maybe it was the OTA reception so I switched to Directv's mpeg4 HD feed of 47.1 and the same pixellation problems were there.

Are you Comcast and other OTA folks experiencing the same pixellation issues? Is this just a Channel 47 local problem or a CBS problem in general? I just got hooked up with HDTV and this is rather disappointing. I know CBS has the Super Bowl this year as well. Is this poor quality what we have to expect for the Big Game?

OTOH, the game on Fox looked great. They usually do a fine job with their football broadcasting.
