hd_axel 07-19-09, 08:56 PM Well folks, That's 4 people with very similar issues. Hello!!
My set has been sitting on my dining room table, inoperable, for 4 months now. I think it would be to our advantage to somehow get to consumer relations and express our concerns about their negligence and get our names submitted so we can have a trail of sorts, as well as hound them until we get some satisfaction.
I paid $6300 for mine about 5 years ago. The problem started at about 3.5 years old. If I can at least get the optical block, I would install it myself. They want me to get an authorized service center to do the work. There is only one in my area, they charge about $475 labor and $675 for the OB, that's right, $1150 plus 8% tax. Excuse me, but I don't think so... That's another $1250 on top of the initial $6300. I just can't justify this TV cost at $7550. Total BS sony support.
There are a couple of ma&pa TV shops in my area that would do the repair for about $700 but Sony will not sell them the OB because they're not an authorized center. Just one issue after another with sony. That's the reason I'll never buy sony again.
I'm on vacation next week, and I intend to ruffle some feathers again with their consumer relations honchos when I return. I will reference the AVS forum and see what other avenues to pursue. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in, especially if there are some legal avenues to pursue.
Remember, this is an engineering mistake/flaw. The cause and defects are due to undersized fans, airflow restrictions, melted/damaged doors, melted LCD's, stressed Optical Blocks and more importantly, it's a safety/fire hazard. We need to get their attention. If enough people contact them repeatedly it may create an exception for repairs...
Runch Machine 07-19-09, 08:59 PM I truly hope you are successful since this may happen to any of us, but keep in mind they sold thousands of these sets and people don't post on forums when their TVs work fine, as mine does. It would be nice to know how common this problem is.
hd_axel 07-19-09, 09:02 PM Wait a minute, you are mad because your 5 year old TV has a problem and they won't fix it for free? What am I missing here? Did you have a serive contract on it? How long is the Sony warranty?
There have been several E- Bulletins about this problem extending the warranty. The problem is gradual and takes time to fully expose the defect, yup, up to year or more. They are not following up regarding the Bulletin, and pretty much giving everyone the run-around. How is your 70XBR950 working? BTW, it's not that it's a 5 y.o TV with a problem, but rather a major cost to repair on a set that was a very expensive flagship model. Also, not very many people that have this TV have exposure to AVS, and a lot of these problems are not reported and obviously unknown. That's probably why an E-Bulletin was generated by sony.

As HD-Axel stated above, it has nothing to do with wanting a 5yr old TV repaired for free. Sony themselves released the bulletin about the above said issues and said they would take care of them at no charge. Now that they have realized that it is costing them too much to do the said "warranty repairs", they are forcing us to cough up several thousands of dollars and buy a new television.
And to answer HD's question, the TV works fine usually once I push on the melted lamp door several times to make the TV turn on. Sometimes it will be fine until turned off, other times it will shut itself down and I have to repeat the process. The new repair guy did something in the TV menu to make the fans run more. He said that would help but Ive not noticed any difference. He did say several wires and the inside housing were melted as well.
Thanks Sony... I foresee a new Pioneer Elite in my future :)
KC-Technerd 07-20-09, 12:20 AM Limited Extended Warranty for Certain 2003 and 2004 Televisions Exhibiting Warping of the Lamp Access Door (http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?&news_id=261&mdl=KDF70XBR950)
My KDF-70XBR950 is still working fine. No known issues.
Runch Machine 07-20-09, 01:23 AM My TV is also working fine. It's interesting, and good business, that they've extended the warranty to cover the defect described above. Previously that notice had an expriration date that was earlier this year.
My TV works great, but you never know what may happen. I changed the bulb recently even though it had not burned out. I thought the picture was a little brighter with the new bulb but, truthfully, I'm not sure. I am amazed at how long the bulb has lasted, as I do use the TV a lot. I know others who have had to replace their bulb a lot sooner than I did.
hd_axel 07-20-09, 05:45 PM My KDF-70XBR950 is still working fine. No known issues.
Well, aren't you the lucky one!!!!!!!!!!!

"Good Business"??? Wrong........ Her ya go, per sonys BS bulletin:
Additionally, through March 31, 2010, Sony will repair the lamp access door and any other components damaged as a result at no charge for any of the covered televisions. Customers who experience this issue should contact Sony at (888) 649-7669 to schedule a repair. Sony will only provide free repair to covered televisions that exhibit this specific condition.
You see, sony is not honoring anything for their customers. They couldn't care less about your problems or helping out their loyal customer base as I have stated previously.
It's just a matter of time before your "Great working TV's" begin to exhibit these symptoms... I'm sure you will be posting here once it does, but you better hope it rears its ugly head before March 31, 2010, otherwise you're SOL, wait a minute here, we already have proven we're SOL...:rolleyes:
KC-Technerd 07-20-09, 06:27 PM Well, aren't you the lucky one!!!!!!!!!!! I no longer own the TV, but I still have access to it and am aware of it's current condition. So the current owner is the lucky one, not me.
Additionally if Sony is truly failing to meet the obligation to repair your TV as covered by the warranty extension, then I believe you have a very valid basis for a law suit and that you should pursue exactly that. I appreciate your sharing your experience here, good or bad, but ranting and rolling your eyes will only go so far.
hd_axel 07-20-09, 06:45 PM I no longer own the TV, but I still have access to it and am aware of it's current condition. So the current owner is the lucky one, not me.
I just want to point out that my responses to these issues are obviously a sore subject with me. My experience with this has been very frustrating and negative with sony, and I'm obviously angry with their non-professional approach and attitude about the issue. sony fanboyism gets to me too, you know, those that try to defend their cause, especially when not knowing how heated the details in conversations become when trying to resolve the details, especially when it is a warranty issue and the $$ consumers invest in their products. Thanks for reading.:( Enough said.
DDraughn 07-20-09, 11:11 PM Sony told me last Thursday that I would hear from the next tier of Customer Support either Friday or Today.... 11:10 pm.... nothing lol.
Not to forget that Sony also told me I have to purchase a new downgraded TV at the discounted rate or if I want my current TV fixed it has to be at my own expense. Funny how it doesnt say that on their website lol
jhohler 07-22-09, 12:13 PM I bought my 70XBR in Jan 05, and to date, no real issues with it. I do have what appears to be a dead pixel on the middle right portion of the screen, but haven't experienced the dreaded "optical block" problem yet. I bought it at the Great Indoors and have had the Sears (GI owner) maint. guy over once. All he did was blow out the dust in the lamp housing. The set still gives me a great picture, despite missing all the latest and greatest technology. It amazes me how much Sony wants for the new 70 XBR9 (20K). When my 70 craps out, I will look at the 82 inch Mitsu. Sony support is no different than any other manufacturer. They all SUCK!!!!

Why do that? I went with a Pioneer Plasma. Amazing PQ!! I recommend looking into the current plasma manufacturers, they have come a long way and blow away any LCD's out there, and even more so with DLP technology. The Pioneer Elites are quickly becoming scarce, grab one if you can. The Panasonics are a decent alternative after Pioneer.
DDraughn, your suggested retail prices are way off...you can get the first TV you listed at Best Buy for $1,499.99. I agree with pretty much everything that HDaxel has said...and for anyone who is saying "my TV is working fine" and "you expect them to fix a 5 yr old TV" is not worth reading/listening to. I'm still waiting on Sony to call me back and the tech (who said my TV was not usable) came out 10 days ago. My tech said Sony outsourced the Optical Block and that is what is causing all this crap. I am down for taking it to court, I'm calling tier 2 support today, will post back with any new or useful info.

KC-Technerd 07-23-09, 03:49 PM and for anyone who is saying "my TV is working fine" and "you expect them to fix a 5 yr old TV" is not worth reading/listening to.
I must have missed the notice that this thread was now for whiners and complainers only (about others good experiences, and so called "fanboyism"). I do value you're input, but I believe it's nonsensical to have an owners thread then dismiss the experiences of those not having problems as not worth reading or listening to. I'd rather see posts about your problems with the TV, your bad experiences with Sony, and eventually how you won a law suit against Sony for failing to comply with their own warranty extension. I'm not a fan of Sony's American operation, and particularly the way they have customer support set up now. However, I've not had any problems related to this TV and neither does the current owner. Perhaps he will, but for now it's working fine.

KC, now that's out of line(In-Bold)!!
Members can post their rants and negative experiences about a product, without having to feel they'll get bashed by people like you, just like they can post their positive experiences as well... People are not whining, just expressing their frustration with a dishonest company like sony. They dropped the ball on what they otherwise were supposed to honor per their bulletin.
Good for you that you and the new owner don't have problems with your TV. When the day comes, you will see first hand how they'll handle yours/their issues... Look at all the members on this thread that have expressed their frustration with the same problems. There are several, and then there is you telling us we're winers. If the subject offends you and bothers you so much then go check out a different thread...
In an ideal situation, it would sure be nice to have sony get a hold of this thread and see what their customer base is saying about this once flagship model, and how their once loyal customers feel about the way this is being handled. Me personally, I don't stand a chance with a giant like sony regarding courts and law suits and so-on. If I did have that kind of money, I wouldn't be having this discussion about my $7000 in-operable dust collector.
KC,
I don't know about you but I found this post with Google search "Sony XBR rear projection problems" I did a good bit of singing Sony's praises when I convinced my friends/family to buy this/other Sony TVs within the first 3 years of having it. (I probably sold a dozen or so for them)....now with this crap...$5500 is a lot to pay for a TV you can only use for 4-5 years. You are lucky you sold the TV when you did...I just hope you didn't give the buyer your phone/address info or you should be hearing from them in about a year or so.
DDraughn 07-23-09, 06:34 PM DDraughn, your suggested retail prices are way off...you can get the first TV you listed at Best Buy for $1,499.99.
LOL, just another example of how bad Sony is bending us over. I just checked SonyStyle.com and it's listed there now on sale for $2100.00 originally
$2300. For their buy back program, you must purchase the TV thru them. Regardless in the cost, I feel all the televisions offered as a replacement is a downgrade :)
I finally got tired of waiting and called Sony Customer Relations today. After arguing with them for an hour about how if I wanted my TV fixed at my own expense or purchase a new TV from that Sonystyle site at the bend over rate, I read their own press release to her from their website. I told her no where in Sonys release did they mention if they felt it was too expensive too bad, buy a new one from us..... She then scheduled my appointment to have my TV repaired at Sony's expense. I'll update next week after it's been repaired :)

If you can provide Contact Names, their Phone Numbers/Extensions, Dept. etc, that would be quite helpful!;) I know I'll use the posted info.

The number I have been calling is (800) 488-7669. I ask for customer relations though I always had to go thru the whole story with whom ever answered the phone and then they would transfer me. I always asked for a supervisor and was always denied, though I will give them credit and admit they were always courteous.
I quoted the info in the link above provided by KC. Hope this helps

I've owned my 60" since 2004 and in the last week I've started seeing a strange probem. After turning on, everything works fine for about 2 minutes then suddenly no picture or sound for about 30 seconds then it's back on for 2 mins, off for 30 seconds...etc. It doesn't matter what input is active or even if a menu is being displayed.
The power/standby light is green the whole time. The only other interesting thing is the power light flashes 5 times when I turn the TV off.
Anyone else run into this issue?
stupdasso 07-24-09, 02:14 PM If I am corrrect this is what it means
Lamp driver error 5 times - Lamp driver is faulty. - No picture/No sound

I agree 100%. I was referring to rants, negative and sarcastic comments about other's positive experiences.
I have a KDF-60XBR950. It has the colors all washed out. Has anyone had this problem and what was the fix? I know its not the bulb or the optical block because I can get a perfect picture from the sd chip with perfect color. Also the menu is the correct color. Does anyone have a link to a service manual? I have repaired many of these sets with other problems but never one like this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Look in the color axis setting. HD 709 = 1080I & 720 P. Standard 601 = 480 I & 480 P. Try Standard setting & custom Check if above correct for settings... Color setting should be around 50 - 55 setting...

So I started messing with the set and found a leaky cap on the C2 board. The picture is very much improved but the set its not like it should be. I will need to continue my search to replace this board. After the cap replacement I have over separated audio like its on simulated surround and my digital tuner is unable to be programed. Colors are good now. Thanks, John
noki123 08-04-09, 01:29 AM Hi guys,
I also tend to own a Sony XBR 950. It has been a year and a half when i have bought this, the brightness of the set is going down day by day. One of my friend told me its the lamp problem you have to change it. I came across few sites;
Lamp price 1 (http://www.projectorlampsworld.com/bulb/Sony/KF-60XBR800.html)
and
Lamp price 2 (http://www.amatteroffax.com/itempagey_invid_1366064189_d_premier-lamp-for-sony-kdf-70xbr950.html)
Please help me out iam looking for the cheapest one. Thanks
Villanman 08-04-09, 09:31 AM I personally would get the original Sony XL2100 instead of an off brand equivalent because the original brand lamp tends to last longer. I recommended One Call to a Friend of mine a few weeks ago and he got one for $149 delivered. One Call website List it for $198, But if you call instead of ordering through the website, you will get it for much lower. Actually if you want anything from onecall, Calling and ordering will usually get you a lower price than what it's website will show.
If anyone has had an issue with Blue Spots here is my experience (thanks to the previous posts):
1. I called Sony, they said it was a bulb door/melting issue and they would schedule a tech to come out
2. The tech came out, looked at the TV and said it was not repairable, it was an optical block issue causing the blue spots
3. I called Sony after the tech sent his report to them, they offered me a 40 inch TV for free or a 52" KDL52V5100 for $500
4. I took the 52" for $500
I didn't really have to haggle with them, my advice is to be as nice as possible to the tech, they write the reports and send them to Sony...clean your house, clean your TV, especially the back of it..clean it dust free and see what happens. I am pissed that I have to go from a 65" to a 52"...the tech also said there is a company out of Illinois that would fix my 65" for $500 so I might do that at a later date.
Thanks for all your help, especially to HD Axel, good luck with everything and hit me back if you guys have any more questions or run into issues, I'll check the string on the regular. (and my next big TV will probably be a Pioneer)

JBaumgart 08-10-09, 07:56 PM Still haven't had any problems with mine yet and am on my 2nd bulb. I would, however, like to upgrade to an 1080P flat panel display sometime in the next year or two but it would have to have at least a 65" screen and be "reasonably" priced, as in less than $5,000.
Is anyone aware of any manufacturer's plans to introduce such a set in the near future?

I had this problem when the bulb was getting near replacement time. New bulb and problem solved.

I buy my lamps from Riverveiw electronics on ebay. The cheapest around and can offer the exact replacement or a good match replacement to save money. I have replaced several hunderd lamps and have had the best luck with these guys with a 180 day warranty on the bulb.
Billnut 08-12-09, 09:12 PM DDraughn, any new info on the repair or replacement of your tv. I just had the repair guy here today and he basically gave me the same speech. Everything inside is a little melted and the fans are clogged. He will call Sony and they will call me in 24 to 48 hours to let me know what they are going to do.
He mentioned that they might sell me a tv at cost or fix mine. I know they will probabally offer me the lesser lcd for there cost. He did mention that if I give them a big enough sob story about how much I love this tv (70xbr) that the might replace it with a refurbished one, somehow I doubt that.
Does anyone know if you take there offer on the lcd, will they come take your broken tv or is it up to you to get rid of it?
hd_axel 08-12-09, 10:56 PM I would be interested in your 65 if you are willing to part with it.
Would you be interested in my KDF70XBR950? I don't have any melted parts, the bulb has about 80 hours on it, and there is a slight yellow noticeable in the right corner during white scenes. Basically it needs a good cleaning and dust removal including the fans, before the optical block goes bad. That is a symptom of the optical block getting too much heat due to dust build up. PM me if interested for more details, location etc!:)
I would be interested in your 65 if you are willing to part with it.
JJB220, how much?
Does anyone know if you take there offer on the lcd, will they come take your broken tv or is it up to you to get rid of it?
Billnut: they don't take the TV, they ask you to tear off the SN sticker and send it to them before they'll process the new TV offer
Billnut 08-17-09, 09:44 PM Sony called me to make an offer for replacing my 70XBR. The offered me:
1. KDL52V5100 for $450 plus tax or
2. KDL55V5100 for $750 plus tax or
3. KDL65W5100 for $3000 plus tax.
Not sure if I want to go for the 52 or 55. Anybody have any luck getting a better deal?
Bill
starlifter 08-19-09, 08:52 PM wow, that's a long 85 pages. search didn't turn up anything so here goes. has anyone had the issue after OB replacement where everytime you turn on the tv, you have to select the language again followed by a program of channels? it's like the ram chip where all my settings are stored has fallen off and i have to program the tv every time i turn it on.
Villanman 08-23-09, 02:02 PM Got my 60" XBR950 in Dec of 03. It has now caught the blue spot problem. Sad part is the optical block is only half the TV's age because they replaced it under warranty when it developed a big yellow blob of sqwiggly lines about 3 years ago. Now it isn't under any extended warranty anymore. Awesome! :(

I just had this problem today. Sorry you had it first. It is a loose connector on the C board. I would have the person, (if it is not you) go over the plugs in the set and make sure all of them are firmly in their sockets and the boards are firmly in their seats. Unless a solder connection was disturbed, this will correct the problem.
Has anyone used these SONY tvs on video games like Wii mario kart or Guitar hero? I have a 60XBR955and I am concerned about a burn in image even though these tvs are not supposed to burn in. I have a KDF60XS955 that have images "stuck" in blue and KDE50A10 that has a seriously bad burn in red. Thanks, JJB
My XBR950 has recently started acting strange.
The first symptom was the infamous flashing green power light during power up. I figured that was the lamp door switch issue. But last night when my wife turned off the TV the lamp and fan never turned off but the power lamp was red. The TV was on all night until I found it in a sort of sleep mode (dim screen with lamp running & red power light) this morning. The TV seems okay after cycling power via the plug.
Has anyone ever experienced this issue?

6 Years of heavy gaming on the 60XBR950 from Halo to Madden, Guitar Hero to Rock band, Gamecube to Wii. Never any burn in.
Now a few weeks ago, my tv got the blue spot issue. Weird thing is the Blue spots will hold image retention. But It Goes away. I was watching a preseason football game and you could still see the score burned in the blue spot during commercials and even if you turned the channel. but it goes away. Too bad the blue didn't. So I had to replace my 5k TV after 6 years of service.

Yes. My 70XBR950 did occasionally have the failure to shutdown issue. No picture, lamp still on, fan still running. Required an unplug to correct.

KC,
Did you resolve the issue and if so what was the solution?
KC-Technerd 09-12-09, 08:56 AM KC,
Did you resolve the issue and if so what was the solution?
No definite resolution. It only happened 5-10 times while I owned the set. I was using multiple remotes to shut down a satellite receiver and audio receiver at the same time as the XBR950. I figured it was possible that the signals from the other remotes might be interfering, so I decided to try avoiding sending any other remote commands during the shutdown cycle of the XBR950. I'm not sure that was the cure, but I don't recall having the issue again after I started doing that.
For those of you do it yourselfers who have discoloring on your sets check out my post in the Sony GWIII AVS forum. It may help.

You mean, the one that's been removed?
Has anyone used these SONY tvs on video games like Wii mario kart or Guitar hero? I have a 60XBR955and I am concerned about a burn in image even though these tvs are not supposed to burn in. I have a KDF60XS955 that have images "stuck" in blue and KDE50A10 that has a seriously bad burn in red. Thanks, JJB
You'd plug an SD 480p Wii into an HDTV? :p
Seriously though, yes. XBOX 360 and PS3 here. Works great. If I ever saw burn in I would probably freak.
Yes. My 70XBR950 did occasionally have the failure to shutdown issue. No picture, lamp still on, fan still running. Required an unplug to correct.
Yep. For me it only happened when I was using the digital/DVI input. There was no other explanation except to figure the Unix OS had crashed. It might have gotten better when I switched to a Logitech Harmony remote, which seems to have more pauses between commands but it's still something I have to watch for on occasion. I had hopes early on that Sony would release a software update, but at this point that isn't going to happen.

I just bought an 70XBR950 from someone locally off of craigslist. I would love to "talk shop" about what you have done to hook up HD sources to your set. I live in NKC, just down the road a bit from Liberty.

I owned my 60" version for 6 years until I sold it a few weeks ago because of the blue spot issue.., but I connected all my HD video sources to a Monoprice HDMI Switcher for a while with the Video going direct to TV via DVI/HDMI cable while all the audio went straight to my old receiver via optical cable. Later I upgraded my receiver and it did all the HDMI switching with all sources going to it HDMI then DVI/HDMI to the TV.
bluehazer 10-16-09, 09:08 PM Sony extended the warranty coverage for the melted door associated optical block problem on my KDF60XBR950 until March 2010.
I called Sony and they set up and paid for a tech to come to my home the following day. The tech took some pictures inside and out and told me the TV was not as bad as he has seen. He told me Sony would contact me after he sent in his report.
Sony called the following day and presented me an offer to either repair the TV or get a "discount" on one the TV's listed on sonystyle. They offered a 52bravia V5100 for $650. I told him that I might just go ahead and get my TV repaired. The Sony rep then told me to look at the Sunday flyers and check the prices and features of the TV's from the major retailers and call back in order to determine what else Sony will offer.
The 52" V5100 is $1999 on sonystyle and they offered it to me for $650. Therefore I am assuming they will give me $1350 off a TV listed on sonystyle after price matching other retailers.
BB had the 55" W5100 for $1999. It would be nice to get this for $650. After measuring the diagnal on my xbr60 it does not seem to be that much smaller.
I would like to get my bluehaze repaired. But how long will it take to return?
Anyone else had an optical block replaced? Give me some input please.

A few years ago! Is your TV still working fine? No optical block problems? I would go with the repair option to get another few years.

No.. it went bad again a couple of months ago, this time out of warranty. I had it for 6 years.

Thanks. I did read the previous 85 pages and your pointer as well as many other pages on other forums. I have spent more time looking at forums regarding this issue in the last week than I care to tell.
I just can't make up my mind on a replacement or a repair. I would do the repair if I could get another 5 years out of the set.
I only came across one post about the replaced OB lasting 19 months and another about having the OB replaced 3 times in 5 years. Neither were specific to my model.
Most are in agreement the problem will return but how long will it take is my main concern?

First one went bad after 2 years, second one right at 4. Also.. the issues that the bad block caused were different both times. First time it was yellow etch a sketch lines all over the screen, the second time it was blue spots.
I am looking for these sets to repair. If anyone is getting rid of their Grand Wega, XBR or SXRD, please consider offering it to me before you dump it. I have had tons of luck repairing them and really enjoy working on them. I am in Connecticut and can travel for pickup. Thanks, John

When you say "dump it", are you saying you want them for free, or to purchase? I'm looking to get rid of my Grand Wega, but not to give away for free... I am looking for a good value. Free is best but I am not against a good deal. I am realy looking for sets that need work. Im not looking to furnish my home and buy working sets. I am looking to hobby repair these sets or help other people with theirs at a discounted price. Of course if I buy the parts I cant give them away but the cost will be just to cover whats involved. I can repair the blue blob, blue haze, stuck pixels, fingerprint, dark picture, color jail bars and rebuild optical blocks and set convergence. I know there are a few of us who have taken these apart and ruined the alignment of the colors. I was one when I first started. I figured if I get a few here and there for parts I can help people get their sets back together and have some fun doing it.
bluehazer 10-27-09, 11:13 PM I have looked over a week at 5 retailers. Going back and forth between several BB, Frys, and a local A&B TV shop.
What makes me mad is there is no comparison with today’s TV's and mine except for the possibly of the Kuro at A&B which was highly calibrated according to the store manager. Come on after 5 years they come up with something better.
My 5 year old KDF60xbr950 picture looks better than all the other crap out there except for the blue haze and the 5 minute burn in scores of the baseball and football games. And oh yea the melted lamp door cover.
Considering the 60" + range. Is there plasma out there that doesn't have the fuzzy artifacts around the people and animals? Is there an LCD out there without the fake looking colors and screen door look? I did look at the faded out looking picture of the Mitsubishi 73 and 82 inches from C9 to 837's but was not impressed.
I challenge anyone out there to find me a 60" + TV that has a better picture than my dying KDF60XBR950. I am depressed my TV is fading to blue without a permanent repair.
sob :(
orlasttoy 10-27-09, 11:22 PM funny...I was just thinking about "upgrading" my 5 year old KDF70XBR950 to the newer technology, but I agree...there is nothing out there close to the size & PQ of this set. (well, I just got a 50" Panny plasma for my bedroom...it looks fantastic, but it aont no 70"!!!)
I DID have the blue haze/warped door, but luckily I had purchased the extended warranty from Circuit City when I bought it, so I'm covered till next year.
CAN anyone suggest something thats as large, but flat & doesnt cost as much as a car? :)
I'd consider upgrading then...got the damn itch again :D

I'll challenge ya... I went from a 70XBR950 to a Pioneer Kuro PRO151FD. It by far "BLOWS AWAY" :D the Sony.
If you can find a KURO 60 inch out there anywhere I would jump on it in a Heartbeat! They are no longer manufactured, and the technology is about 5 years ahead of its time by today's standards. Furthermore, the ability of current manufacturers to provide an equivalent PQ, let alone a better one than the Kuro is indeed limited, they just can't make it happen...
Hands down, test after test there is Nothing, I mean Nothing that compares to the 9th Generation Pioneer Elite Kuros, not even the 2010 models coming out by Panasonic, LG, Samsung, and especially Sony, etc. I will never own another LCD after owning this Plasma for the past 8 months, the PQ is simply breathtaking, and I have not even had it calibrated yet.;)
If your finances allow you to afford a Kuro, I recommend you "Go For It", I was considering buying another one myself, but they are difficult to find right now... :) Good luck with your choices.

The Pioneer Kuro's largest panel is 60 inches. I went from a 70 " to a Kuro 60", and it took me about 30 minutes to adjust to the 60". The PQ is night and day difference, and the cost was about $2K less than my 70XBR950. As mentioned previously, the PQ on the 60" Kuro Plasma is much much better than the sony ever was. I don't miss that glow of the LCD panel one bit during dark scenes, actually I don't even know how I tolerated and put up with it... I can comfortably say the PQ on my XBR950 was crap compared to the Elite panels...
JBaumgart 10-28-09, 11:27 PM Why did Pioneer stop making the Kuro? Have to assume they had a hard time selling enough of them at a price that make them profitable?

I was able to see three 60" Elites today. I stared at them for a very long time. The PQ was better than anything else I've seen in the stores lately. I did experience TV fever and it was hard to keep my hand off my wallet. I am going to think about it tonight. The only thing now holding me back is possibly kicking myself next year when an affordable 70" set comes along with equal PQ from another manufacturer.
stevienice 10-29-09, 10:34 AM Just tossing my name in here as a dissatisfied buyer of a 60xbr950. Bought in Jan. of 2004 at CC. Just found my receipt, purchased some ExW from them which I paid $570 for.
The crap shut off on me a couple Saturday nights ago, blinking a series of 3 red lights 15 times. I played with the slightly warped lamp door several times and couldn't get the picture back. After flinging the instruction manual around the apt. a few times to the point of it ripping in half, I disconnected the DVR cable box I had and moved into bedroom with my laptop and bottle of wine and smoke and set up shop there. I have a Hitachi plasma in here which I quite like and have been watching for 2 weeks now.
Last night, on a whim, I undid the lamp door and refastened it and to my surprise, the tv went on. Of course, without the cable box and the volume turned up to a decent level I got snow and the accompanying white noise which I hope didn't wake anyone at 3 this morning. On one of the video channels I noticed for the first time a nice little solar system on most of the right side of the tv, at least a few hundred broken pixels worth.
This is in addition to the two other problems I had with the picture, lots of little quarter sized smudges that look pink but somehow appear darker during light images on the screen, and the two right hand corners having slight blue splotches in them. I think the little smudges first started appearing about 2+ years ago, and the blue corners maybe more than 6 months now, can't remember specifically when they became an issue.
I think when all these little aggravations started popping up, I was out of the warranty and just assumed I couldn't do anything because CC had closed. So I sat there and suffered through it, mainly because I could not justify having to shell out another $5K for a new tv after buying one only a few years earlier. I won't even get into the lamp bulb replacement thing; I had not even thought I would have to spend $200 or so a year on a new bulb when I originally bought the set. I had a few of them covered by the warranty, and they were easy to install, so I let the aggravation of having to hang out in my bedroom for a week waiting for the new lamp to come slide.
And another thing, maybe it was just my set, and I have read a lot the last few weeks about the whole Grand Wega series over the 5 years they were manufactured, but I have to say, I was never really overly blown away by the picture. It was never stunningly bright, and I had it set on vivid, and was sometimes almost impossible to watch during the daytime with sunlight in the apartment. It didn't matter how new the bulb was.
It's made me reconsider spending a lot of money on a new set. The day after the tv died, I was contemplating the Samsung 8500 and saw it on the BB website for $4500 dollars but started to think about whether I wanted to shell that out again for another tv. I'm looking now at the Hitachi UltraVision 55 inch which is only $1800 as a more likely solution now.
Ah well, live and learn I suppose. Thanks for letting me vent.

Yea. I am completely burnt out on multithousand dollar TV's. I expected my XBR to last until I decided to get rid of it. I will NEVER buy anything SONY again. I don't mind a little maintance. But having a fatal flaw in the design making the problem repeat over and over again with repair SUCKS. With that said. You can still get a little help from Sony with your model. They extended the warp door and associated destroyed parts warranty until March 2010. Call 1-888-649-7669. You can see the memo at sonyesupport then do a search for kdf60xbr950. You will have to hassel with them a bit which I am still doing but they specifically say they will cover all cost associated with the warped door and damaged areas.
BrettStah 11-18-09, 10:48 AM OK, I'm a 70" XBR owner... bought the TV I guess about 4-5 years ago. We've been dealing with the "blue blob" problem, and the blue stuck pixels problem. During black scenes on TV, it's like we have our very own Milky Way galaxy (all blue stars, however). :)
So what is the resale value of these sets these days? I do not want to go smaller than 70", and it looks like my options are to go with a front projector, or one of the Mitsubishi models - that 82" one looks potentially very nice! I know that DLP is likely fading away, but as long as I can get new bulbs for it, I would hope/expect that it would last me longer than my Sony has. I will peruse the Mitsubishi threads to see if there are tons of folks complaining about them.
Has any 70" Sony owners upgraded to the new 73" or 82" Mitsubishi DLPs? How do they compare?

I haven't yet had any of the problems (yet, with my 70") that you and others have encountered, so I am waiting for manufacturers to release a flat panel 1080P LCD or plasma option, at least 65" at a reasonably price, before upgrading. I personally would not invest in a DLP display right now...if I HAD to replace I would go for a 55" LCD, but would not be real happy with the smaller screen size. Last year I bought a 40" LCD Samsung for the bedroom which I'm very happy with, but for my main system I would like something much larger. For now I'm trying to be patient...
BrettStah 12-29-09, 02:06 PM OK, I have a KDF-70XBR950 that I am replacing soon. I live in New Orleans... anyone interested in buying it? It has the blue blob thing in the upper left corner, and a bunch of always on blue pixels. When it's on a dark scene, the blue is definitely noticeable. When there's a lot of action and colors while watching something, the extra blue isn't nearly as noticeable unless I'm looking for it. Other than that, I think the current bulb is about 6 months old. I don't track the hours, but typically we get 2-2.5 years per bulb.
Make me an offer via PM if you're interested - I'd rather not deal with shipping it, so a buyer who can come pick it up would definitely be preferred, but if there are none I'll ship it via whatever shipping company can handle it.
I have no clue how much it's worth, to be honest, considering the stuck pixels. If it doesn't sell I may just give it to my cheap brother-in-law. :)
dark_cobra 12-29-09, 03:20 PM Well.. It's been a fun fight with Sony for the 3rd time and I won with a free repair thanks to the research I did here on AVS!!
I took it to the top level over there at Sony several times using the phone numbers posted here and I refused NO for an answer even when they refused to replace the OB and put me on hold for over an hour just to eventually hear them say they were mistaken and were paying for an OB and all was paid for by them ???(and they even made it sound like they were not WRONG on the phone after saying no to me twice:confused:)..
I told them over and over again it was their own engineering issues and since they were NOT investing in it anymore obviously with revisions, why should I not be serviced for this problem over for thier lack of engineering support. I also stated that my ballast board wires were a near fire hazard according to the tech who evaluated it on site for them due to the excessive heat inside the unit causing cracked shielding on the wires.
This time they completely gutted it and rebuilt OB, ballast board and much more.. They even put in the new bracket for the thermal switch, but I doubt it will work any better since it now sits under the lamp area.
Now the 60" XBR that has been the family centerpiece for almost 7 years is officially on Nintendo 64 duty in the basement for the kids... LOL it will run down there nice and be running cool for years to come and with much less use on it now I bet it will go for 10 years . :D
The best news is I just took delivery today on the Samsung B8500 LED LCD with full backlit LED !!! YEAH ! ! ! .. It's almost a Kuro killer as CNET descibes it. But damn, at about 1.5" thick I just freed up a crapload of space on my stand and need to get a wall mount soon.
Thanks guys for all the info I could get here to win this fight.

BrettStah 12-29-09, 10:43 PM Well.. It's been a fun fight with Sony for the 3rd time and I won with a free repair thanks to the research I did here on AVS!!
So just to be clear, you got Sony to replace for free the part(s) that cause these stupid stuck blue pixels that I have on my TV?? Can you tell me what number you called? I'd love to get mine fixed, even though I've ordered a replacement TV already!
OK, I have a KDF-70XBR950 that I am replacing soon.
:)If you give it to him, let him know I can rebuild the optical block. Best and cheapest around. Unless SONY does it for free. :) JJB

I started with the 1-800-282-2848 cust service number and eventually got transferred to the customer relations dept after being told NO alot of times by customer service. I ended up talking to a someone in that relatons department who said NO as well, but I kept telling him yes until he finally put me on hold and then they changed thier story. Of course this all happen after I let them come to me for a full inspection of the set and evaluation. There were things on my set considered a fire hazard by the field tech. Also my original discussion with Sony involved mentioning the Class Action Suit in NY, the Lamp Door replacement service document on thier site (which clearly shows the problem of heat dissipiation was still in the set) and whatever else I found in this thread by reading it for 2 nights straight.. "including the number I was nice to give you for your fight.. SO go at it with them if you feel up for it, and READ this thread all the way through or at least the last 3 years of problems..
Enjoy

So what is the resale value of these sets these days?
i'm also curious to know what these sets have been going for. i've got a 60" that i've never had any problems with, but i'm going to be moving soon to a place where it's not going to fit, so i'm looking to move to something i'm able to hang.
anyone have any input?

anyone have any input? I have seen them go for $300 - $600 with more for ones with a matchig stand. People asking more for them are not selling quickly if at all. 70" is a different story. I see them sell for over $800. I watch Craigslist and ebay to see what they are going for and to find them broken. They do sell better than DLPs but not by much. I buy them broken if something happens to it and you are getting rid of it cheap. Good luck.
TECHNO-IDIOT 01-06-10, 05:43 PM My lamp cover warped and I was too smart to just buy a replacement cover, so I rigged the metal piece the cover pushes on to get my tv to work. Well, after 3 years that way, the piece I used bent up and trying to adjust it, I broke off the metal piece to the sensor. Can anyone direct me to a place where I ca get a cover? Most importantly, the sensor or metal piece, what is that referrred to and can I get that replaced, and at what cost. Thanks.

I think this is the part # but you may want to double check. I like the idea of not having a door on to allow heat egress. Not sure where you will find one. I would try Sony. I forget if its easy or not on a XBR 950 if thats what you have
TECHNO-IDIOT 01-06-10, 08:48 PM Thanks so much for the information. I placed a cut up lollipop stick to activate the switch. The big plate was still on though.

The Tech who came in to service it 3 weeks ago let me know that if I wanted to short out the micro switch this time he could do that. Let's just say that door switch will now no longer be a future issue since the next repair means I dump the set finally anyways.. Figure out how to short it and take the lamp door off completely as suggested. YOU NEED LOTS OF AIRFLOW INSIDE !

It is there for safty reasons but if you know your not going to pull the lamp while the set is running and then stick a coat hanger into the lamp connectors, I think it will be OK.

What about dust concerns?
UV rays can also be dangerous. The lamp output is not filtered for UV.
That happens inside the block.
If you see light from the lamp you are looking at UV waves that can damage your eyes

If you see light from the lamp you are looking at UV waves that can damage your eyes From what I read on the post, he was not concerned. I offered the part # to properly fix it and the doors are easily obtainable. The way it sounds it will work but is the quality and saftey considered? maybe not. For me to judge, no. Dust will most likley enter from the back of the set. My XBR950 has no dust filtering on the vents in the rear. The access door is an integral part of the cabinet but on an XBR950, (I assumed that is the model) there are 2 lamp doors. There is the actual door and a sealed access panel unlike the WE/WF/XS/A20 models, which have a gap in the plastic. Now that I realize this, he actualy will not get more airflow if the access door is in place. I dont think he will have a problem. I checked my XBR950 and it is good without the door installed. Not a bit of light exits from the front. Because the access door is sealed up so well, it may be the reason this model is the worst when it comes to door melting because there is no air movement at all when the second door is in place.
I know what your thinking, you have an XBR950 too? Yes. I have one of every model LCD RPTV SONY made from 2003 till 2008 and also some other brands. I fix them so I should have a few. Yes my wife is annoyed but she doesnt complain when she is watching the 60 inch KDF-60XS955 in our living room or the 60 inch KDS-R60A2020 in the bedroom. Oh yeah, the exersize room has a KDF-60 XBR950 and the game room a 62 inch WD-62825 Mitsubishi. I have the rest in my shop and several of the same models. KDS-R50XBR1 KF-60WE610 KDF-E50A10>>>(I dont like those) KDF-60XBR850. I wont list all of the sizes, there are to many. So if anyone is ever in need of parts for their SONY, Im sure I can help.
Optical Block Replacement
The optical block I had replaced on my 70" XBR950 in June 07 is already showing an area of blue across the bottom of the screen, which is also how the first block began to fail. Now I have to decide on weather to repair the set for a second time or replace it.
Has anyone tried replacing the optical block themselves? The optical block can be purchased for under $600, assuming the defective block is returned. Having it replaced by a professional will cost around $1,200.
A new 70" TV including stand and extended warranty cost quite a bit ($4K+) more than repairing this set and the XBR950 has a very good picture when operating correctly.
I was considering a new Mitsubishi 73” or 82” but even these sets are having optical block issues.
I don't know of one large screen TV out there that is dependable for duration of 5+ years. Purchasing an extended warranty for these sets is really not an option but a necessity and they only cover the TV for a maximum of 5-years at somewhere between $500 and $900.
TV manufactures have it made. They can legally sell us something that is almost sure to fail after the very short manufacture warranty expires. Because of this we must spend additional money for an extended warranty or risk paying 1/3 of what the TV originally cost to purchase for repairs. And even if we do this the extended warranty only last for a few years.
The only way to win this game is to not play.
search around a bit on this site and others. You are not alone with this issue with sony.
There are others options available.
Look for Steve Linke posts in regard to this issue.
He succesfully won a small claims lawsuit against sony and recovered well over 2k bucks for a 2004 model.
Removale and replacement of the OB is also covered in his posts if you choose that option.
check the GWIII threads among others.
Good luck

tdma,
Thanks for the information. Steve has done a great job discussing this issue.
I spoke with Sony. They are only willing to provide me with a $250 service discount. Whoopee, service will now only cost $1,000 instead of $1,250.
take the bastards to court.
Worst case you are where you are now.
If you win you keep the tv anyway

The only way to win this game is to not play. The Mitsubishi is questionable as far as reliablity. I have a bunch of the 2008 and later models for repair and there are more on the way. The Sony electronics component wise is a very good set. If it werent for the optical block, it might have lasted forever
Many people have replaced the optical block themselves and I rebuild them for the model you have. People have had lots of luck doing this themselvs saving a ton of money and I offer technical assistance if you get into trouble. Good luck.

jjb220,
My first OB lasted 3-years and the second 2.5 years. Is this the typical life span or does mileage vary?
I run the set on torch (Vivid) mode. I calibrated the set using Pro mode but prefer the screen pop of vivid mode.
JBaumgart 01-20-10, 10:41 PM What do people do after these huge sets fail to work, short of having to do expensive repairs? When a new bulb fails to work, I plan to replace it.
Just hoping that a new set of comparable size (70") that's reasonably affordable is available when the time comes. So far I've not have any issues that would cause me to get rid of it and get something else.

Well Sony offers in Canada a LCD 70" which is only cdn $19,999.

I believe this has been available in the U.S. for at least a year, at the same USD price. I can wait until something else comes along that's way more reasonable, and probably better quality as well.

I measure them in hours and your set should see 15,000 hours on an optical block. There is nothing wrong with using the set on the brightest possible setting. The brighter the better for this model

I would be happy with 15,000 hours but we are only getting around 5,500 hours.
I also own a Qualia 006. The optical block in that set only lasted about 2,000 hours. The repair on the Qualia was free but they installed three OB's before getting one that wasn't defective.
My Sony experience has not been rewarding to say the least.

Curious that you would say that. A few months after purchase I had my set professionally calibrated by someone very well regarded in the field, and there is no way he came close to using the brightest possible setting, and also didn't use Vivid mode. I also understand that using "torch settings" will definitely shorten the life of your bulbs, and I would guess the optical block as well?

sony60inch 01-29-10, 01:34 PM I am looking for a good value.
JJB220....you sound like an excellent individuale !!

I am just wondering if can answer this post for me. I saw it on the forum, and I did the same exact thing. My microswitch is now broken, and I don't know what to do. Is there a way to fix it, or to get the tv to work by surging the microswitch? If it has to be done by a repairman, around how much will it cost to replace the switch?
splinke 02-01-10, 04:23 PM If you have a warped lamp door, Sony is supposed to fix this for free under their Limited Extended Warranty for Certain 2003 and 2004 Televisions Exhibiting Warping of the Lamp Access Door (http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?&news_id=261&mdl=KF60WE610). Unfortunately, I have heard recent stories where they are refusing to do it, because they are out of parts, and insisting on giving people discounts off different TVs. That sounds questionable to me both ethically and legally. You might want to contact them, though.
See my web site (link in my signature below) for more information, including an eBay listing for John Breton (jjb220).

In the XBR950 the lamp does not dim or brighten to increase the picture brightness. The LCD controls all of it. Since the LCD blocks or allows the light to pass to create the picture, a brighter picture means less light to be blocked or "resisted" so less heat. The UV light being resisted causes heat on the LCD chip. 100% light = no resistance.

sony60inch 02-02-10, 03:32 PM Does anyone know how many fans are in/or attached to the kdf 60xbr 950 optical block itself ??
I had taken my optical block out and sent it off for repair, due to typical blue blob that degenarated over time and stuck pixels in star patterns. I had only noticed one 'wheel type' fan on top of the block. However I did not take the optical block completely apart.
Someone had posted somewhere that this "optical block" had two fans. Again I only noticed one.
Can anybody say for sure? If there are two fans on the "optical block itself" where is the second fan?
Thanks in advance.
sony60inch 02-02-10, 03:56 PM Concerining my KDF 60 XBR950
Today I reinstalled an optical that I had sent out for repair due to typical blue blobs that degenrated into tons of stuck pixels over time, the repaired issues are now gone. No more blue blobs or stuck pixels.
What I am noticing now, after reinstalling is a green tinge or hue on a little over a third of the picture. If you were to slice the picture into three diagonals kind of like this "///" the diagonal third on the right is the section that exhibits this green hue.
Don't get me wrong the tv is completely watchable and I am able to somewhat compensate for this hue with the tv's color controls, but not completely. It is more noticable on a toataly black picture or totaly white picture.
I seem to remember that someone had posted somewhere that the green hue issues related to this optical block could be a result of dust or dirty optical filters or lcd's ??? Can someone coment on this.
Thanks in advance

Sorry to advise, but its the OB thats causing the green hue.

Yes, while it's obvious that it's something in the optical block, I am certain a few people posted that by cleaning either one of the filters or LCD or both, that either their greens spot issue or slight green blob cured their optical issue. This is as opposed to their blue blob issue.
I may be mistaken about what I read but I'll try to search this some more. In any event I am not going to try to clean it because my repaired unit carries a 6 month warranty. By opening the seal on the block I will void this warranty.
Thank gigantically for chiming in.
Anyone else had this also.

No problem. Good luck with your OB which I've had replaced by Sony 3 times already for a yellow/green hue. The tech didn't drop by to clean it, he replaced the whole unit.

You're correct. What I'm thinking of is called "Cinema Black" on the XBR950s. As I recall it reduces the output of the lamp slightly.

Works good to make Black level better without the black crush... Lamp should last longer.

If you have an XBR950, it is considered a 2003 model, even if it was manufactured and/or you purchased it in 2004. If you do have an XBR950, then the extended warranty for lamp door warping expires in just ONE MORE MONTH (March 31st, 2010). I recommend that all owners take a look at your lamp door (go through the procedure you would do to replace the lamp without actually unplugging it). If there is any sign of warping, melting, cracking, etc. on the lamp door itself or any surrounding parts, you should report it to Sony before that deadline expires.
splinke 02-25-10, 04:25 PM ATTENTION all owners of models KF-42WE610, KF-50WE610, KF-60WE610, KDF-60XBR950, KDF-70XBR950, KF-42WE620, KF-50WE620, KDF-42WE655, and KDF-50WE655:
This is a reminder that your TV has a known failure related to lamp overheating, causing warping, melting, scorching, cracking, etc. of the lamp door and other adjacent parts in the TV. This can eventually render your TV inoperable, and it could be a safety issue.
Sony USA has an extended warranty alert for the problem:
Limited Extended Warranty for Certain 2003 and 2004 Televisions Exhibiting Warping of the Lamp Access Door (http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?&news_id=261&mdl=KF60WE610)
And Sony Canada has an offer alert for the problem:
Notice for 2003 and 2004 Model Year Grand WEGA™ Televisions (http://www.sony.ca/view/515.htm)
On March 25, 2010, Sony extended this warranty a second time (for an additional year). It is now set to expire on March 31st, 2011. I recommend that all owners periodically take a look at their lamp doors (go through the procedure you would do to replace the lamp without actually unplugging it). If there is any sign of warping, melting, scorching, cracking, etc. on the lamp door itself or any surrounding parts, you should report it to Sony before the deadline expires. It may already have happened, but you are unaware of it.
If you find evidence of the problem, and you are concerned that there is a potential safety issue, please file an Incident Report with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (https://www.cpsc.gov/cgibin/incident.aspx).
In the US, I recommend insisting that Sony replaces your TV with one of EQUIVALENT SIZE and FEATURES WITHOUT CHARGE. Cite the following information (I am not an attorney, so this is legal information--not legal advice...consult an attorney for the latter):
The federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (Title 15 of the United States Code, Sections 2301-2312) (http://www.thelemonlawyers.com/magnuson-moss-warranty.html) states the following.
Section 2304(a)(1): "{S}uch warrantor must as a minimum remedy such consumer product within a reasonable time and without charge, in the case of a defect, malfunction, or failure to conform with such written warranty..."
Section 2301(11): "The term 'replacement' means furnishing a new consumer product which is identical or reasonably equivalent to the warranted consumer product."

ScottyL 03-23-10, 10:43 AM ATTENTION all owners of models KF-42WE610, KF-50WE610, KF-60WE610, KDF-60XBR950, KDF-70XBR950, KF-42WE620, KF-50WE620, KDF-42WE655, and KDF-50WE655:
However, these alerts expire on March 31st, 2010. So, I recommend that all owners take a look at their lamp doors (go through the procedure you would do to replace the lamp without actually unplugging it).
Section 2304(d): "Remedy without charge. For purposes of this section and of section 2302(c) of this title, the term 'without charge' means that the warrantor may not assess the consumer for any costs the warrantor or his representatives incur in connection with the required remedy of a warranted consumer product..."

Good stuff! Thank you!
I called yesterday...the tech came out today. He said he wasn't 100% sure but he thought the melted parts he needed were not available anymore. He said Sony may call me an offer me a discount on a new TV. I will take a projector thank you (My XBR sits in a media room)!
A while back I read this thread when my the door door post stopped making contact wtih the micro sensor. I ended up balling up some tin foil to make it work. My door is melted and the inside shows melting too when you take the lamp out.
Other than that my unit still works (no optical block either) but I called just in case because I didn't know if there were parts on the inside damaged and why not take advantage of Sony offering up the repairs when the set it way out of warranty!
I will keep everyone posted as to what Sony says but I also want to say thanks to everyone who has shared. I have learned a lot on AVS and this thread is no exception.
ScottyL 03-23-10, 12:13 PM The tech just called me back....He called Sony and they said they "would not be repairing my TV" but would be calling within the next 24-48 hours to provide some options.
I am sure they are going to offer me a discount on a new model. The KDL-60NX800 looks nice but I wonder how much I will have to shell out to get it (assuming it's even offered).
I will keep everyone posted.
Again, my TV still works but if you are in the same situation why not get it checked out. I asked the tech. what they would do with the my old TV if they provided me a new discounted one and he said they would probably let you keep it but peel off the serial number so there would be no warranty. It's out of warranty anyway!!
splinke 03-23-10, 01:47 PM Press for a free replacement of comparable size and features. That is what they should be obligated to provide under warranty law. For example, I would not consider a free 42" or 46" TV for your 60" TV consistent with the "reasonably equivalent" clause, nor would I consider a discount offer consistent with the "free of charge" clause.
ScottyL 03-23-10, 02:08 PM Trust me...I will! Again thanks for the info!
hd_axel 03-23-10, 06:24 PM Press for a free replacement of comparable size and features. That is what they should be obligated to provide under warranty law. Good luck with that one... A free 42" or 46"? Sorry but that was downright funny, LMAO. C'mon this is SONY we're talking about.
Not only would they not honor my request for repairs on my 70", they told me to cough up $1.5K to fix my set, or go through Sony Style to pick out a discounted 46" LCD and pay the discounted price for the panel at $1700. They go by full retail price point for the exchange...
They don't give a rats-ass about the consumer. Their greed and shotty engineering is sinking their consumer TV business. Their reputation is not what it used to be, and I say that as a result of discussions I've had via. comments and feedback from professionals in the industry. I have boycotted Sony since my negative experience with them.
I paid $6000 for my KDF70XBR950, used it for 2.5 years before I began noticing yellow blotches in 2 of the corners on my panel.(Optical Block failure), and a known major engineering flaw/problem internally at SONY!
I've owned my set for 4 years(It's been sitting dormant, collecting dust for 1.5 years). So, it cost me $1500 per year for ownership on this POS, that's $125 per month to have this set in my house over the past 4 years. SONY should have worked with me to resolve this instead of losing my loyalty to their products.
I could have saved a lot of money if I went through Rent-A-Center instead of purchasing! NEVER AGAIN SONY! C-YA.
ScottyL 03-24-10, 11:15 PM They won't repair it but they offered me the following....
Sony Model Price does not included local sales taxes
KDL52EX701 $1250+TAX
KDL55EX501 $1050+TAX
KDL46NX700 $ 860+TAX
KDL52V5100 Refurbished at No Cost with 90 DAY WARRANTY
They called first and sent me an email confirmation right after....
In doing some homework I see the XBR1 owners are getting much better deals for theirs. However they all seem to have optical block issues. My understanding is that is a possiblity with this TV as well but as of now I am only dealing with a melted door and a piece of tin foil to keep the micro sensor pressed in.
No issues with PQ as of now. However I am scared that it's coming and for that reason and the fact that they didn't even offer me a deal on a same size TV I am going to push back.
Worst thing i can do is get a free TV out of the deal or a decent deal on something better.
i am going to try and leverage the fact that this is one of four XBR TV's I own among a ton of other Sony gear. Hey....it's worth a try!:D
ScottyL 03-25-10, 07:19 PM So I called the exchange and customer relations. Both won't budge on those offers (surprise surprise).
Anyone have luck by other means?

bstan21 03-29-10, 10:55 PM Add me to the list of xbr950 owners waiting to hear from Sony. I have a third party warranty who is in the process of communicating to Sony what the tech found. I have the warped door and basic burnt plastic smell from the innards of the unit. No failures yet but I imagine its coming. We'll keep you posted of the offers I get, although they will come from the warranty I would imagine.
Any tips? Should I expect a total payout from warranty company, or is that wishful thinking?

I ended up just taking the free 52....I argued on the phone with the exchange department and the customer relations department. I simply don't have the time to give anymore....
In the end my TV still works fine and I took that into consideration. I also didn't want to shell out any cash for what they were offering because when this one does eventually go I want to replace it with a projector. It may be tough to buy a Sony considering everything even though I consider myself a Sony loyalist.
While I realize it's not an on par with my 60" I will take it especially when I get to keep it and my old TV....
I know someone else with a 70" and they didn't even offer him that.
I just wish they would keep the offers consistent.
JBaumgart 03-31-10, 10:41 PM Looks like a reasonable deal for an electronics product that's so far out of warranty. A little disappointing however, that the warranty on the 52" is just 90 days...kind of says they don't put a lot of faith into their refurbishing abilities.
bstan21 04-04-10, 10:54 PM I called to check in with my tech and he said they had four parts on order. So, it appears I am getting the fan kit. Perhaps they decided to start fixing these again?
Teach2332 05-10-10, 10:31 PM Hi, I have a KDF-60XBR950 that I bought back in Jan '04. It looked like I had the Thermal Fuse and PB blown (That's what the service guy said 2 weeks ago) he came today with the parts and said well it's more than that, several items upline were fried as well, now they want another $800 on top of the $200 down I already paid. I said Thanks but no thanks. I had in my mind that $1000 to fix was my line, first thought it was going to be Approx $400 now this.
Any thoughts on what to do with it, I have the Sony stand as well, are there any places/people who might want it for parts etc? $5400 for 6 yrs, not too thrilled Sony.
Hello Panasonic/Samsung/LG
Any one want to buy a stand? Western NY
This thread has been wonderful over the years, time to move to another world!

With the optical block problems on those models to boot, your TV is probably only worth about $50-$100 for its parts, and the shipping costs would pretty much erase even that. That's Sony quality for you.
You could try asking Sony for a discount offer on a new TV, if you don't mind giving Sony more money and having another Sony TV. See the Facebook I Have A Defective Sony TV (http://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Have-a-Defective-Sony-TV/182875766612?ref=nf) page for discussion. If you post your problem there, someone from Sony will likely contact you. Whether their offer is sufficient is up to you.

Not sure about the hours but my second bulb seems to have lasted a very long time. I purchased the TV when it first came out and I'm still on No. 2.
I too purchased the TV early April 2004. This the first time I replaced the lamp.
To see the hours go into the menu options and press the 5 key five times. The hours will be displayed on the right side of the screen.

Thanks, but I'm not seeing how you get to the menu options where pressing the five key 5 times would have any effect. I've been using a Harmony remote since Day 1 so I'm not that familiar with the options on the original!

There is no guarantee that they will work, and be very careful when in the menu...accidental changes can have very bad effects.

Thanks, but at the risk of screwing things up, I'll just wait until my bulb burns out and replace it!
From the SONY remote...
How to check lamp hours:
If the set is off, press DISPLAY, 5, VOL+, POWER.
If the set is on, then QUICKLY press POWER, DISPLAY, 5, VOL+, POWER.
Once the data screen appears press the 5 key seven times. The LAMP hours should be on the left side of the screen.
To reset the counter press 3 Mute.
To exit the menu press power
then wait for a count of one and press power again. (Or just leave the set off for 30 mins)
To "extend" the lamp life never turn the set on and off for less than 30 minutes at a time. If you turn it on, leave it on for at least 30 min. If you turn it off and the screen goes dark, leave it off for at least 30 minutes before turning it back on.
For another poster's question... there are three fans in the set. One above the tuner stack. One on the back of the set by the optical block, and a squirrel cage type on top of the optical block. You should remove the bottom rear of the set at least once a year to clean out all the fans. If you live in a dusty area, clean the set every quarter.
Moving a KDE50XBR-950 and the existng interface cable is 35 feet long snaked through the attic. I Need the original 3 meter "siamese style" cable which has a DVI connector and a proprietary connector on each end!!
Sony VMCP10 Display Interface Cable

My only other option is to cut 5 feet off the end of each existing cable and try to splice the cables-- how many wires in there?? ANyone know??
THANKS!!
Runch Machine 08-21-10, 06:03 PM The Sony cable is not proprietary at all. It is a cable with DVI connectors on each end. They are widely available on line. Even better, you can get cables with HDMI on one end and DVI on the other. Nearly all HD set top boxes have HDMI outputs now.
There's no reason to cut 5 feet off the existing cable. Can't you use it as it is? I believe there are 18 leads in the HDMI/DVI cable and splicing them would be very difficult. Five extra feet of cable will not affect performance at all.
If you still want to have a shorter cable you can go on line and order a cable with an HDMI connector on one end and a DVI cable on the other end.

I'm sorry but you are mistaken. It is a propietary cable that runs from the panel to the media receiver unit. You must be thinking of the wrong unit.
The cable has 2 connectors at each end-- one is a standard DVi the other is a proprietary cable
I need that cable folks-- Haven't been able to find it online yet . ..
Runch Machine 08-22-10, 01:56 AM OK, the TV most people discuss in this particular forum doesn't have a media receiver unit. You may want to see if there is a forum that is specifically for your TV.

you are in the wrong forum: you should repost in the plasma flat panel forum
but I can add some info:
--Do not attempt to cut the cable unless you are experienced: if you must, cut the DVI end as it would be easier to reconnect: do not attempt to splice the cable: re-solder leads to the DVI terminals themselves. again It is not recommended
a seach for the display cable shows there are 2 part numbers, one is VMC-P10, Sony partnumber 9-382-731-1: and here is a link for a similar issue (European model) :

there used to be several sites selling these cables but this one may not be available anymore: here is an old one:

jaybone909 10-20-10, 03:28 PM My 70" died a few weeks ago. I read about the warranty extension thanks to this site. We bought the TV back in 2004 I believe and we replaced a total of 3 lamp bulbs to date. Not to bad.
Sony has already fixed the warped\melted door for free a year before. Now the lamp door burned again, bulb popped, lamp driver fried, and case assembly is warped. Oh and the fans are very dirty and was recommended that they get replaced.
The tech said he can replace everything but the case assembly, as they don't make it anymore. He also said that he may be able to re-use it and get the TV working.
Sony said if they ordered the parts and the tech could not get it to work then we would be SOL. They did make us a few offers on new and refurbished TV's. The biggest one was a new KDL55EX701 for roughly $600.
But we argued that we cannot go from a 70" to a 55" and that we have been loyal Sony customers for decades and demanded something bigger. Sony said they would get back to us. A few days went by and we called back the guy we talked to before but he was out sick (cough BS cough). The new rep offered us a new KDL60EX701 for roughly $1200 and that's what we jumped on.
Is Sony really responsible for providing us with an equal or greater TV for free as a result of this defect? We have already complained about the price but they said that is the offer and wouldn't budge. Maybe we should be grateful that we got them to offer a 60" since that isn't part of the replacement policy?
We're going to miss our 70" and now we have to get rid of it! Does anybody know anyone near central NJ who would want it? I'll probably post an ad on craigslist.

I am also experiencing problems, although not to the same extent - yet. I replaced a bulb about 2 weeks ago, the third I believe in the 6 1/2 years we've owned the TV. Then starting yesterday the set would not turn on, as I began to get the "3 blinking red light/then a pause" sequence, indicating the lamp door was not triggering the switch. Called Sony, and much to my surprise they gave me an event number and a couple of local repair places I could call. Got a hold of one of them this morning and the tech was out late this afternoon. He confirmed the lamp door was warped and said they would order a replacement kit. In the meantime he jury-rigged the switch with some tape as a temporary fix until the door kit arrives. So far so good.
But after the TV fired up he also noticed that I have dust inside and could really use a new optical block. It's the blue blotch on the upper middle of the screen. I've seen evidence of this previously on occasion, but now the problem has definitely gotten worse. I called Sony and the person who I spoke with says they are not supporting this part on this TV. Tomorrow I plan to call their customer relations number and see if I can get some consideration. If anyone has any other ideas I'd love to hear from you!
Sonyxbr 10-20-10, 08:07 PM I also had the optical block problem with my 60" and Sony offered me the deal of purchasing a new set for a deep discount. I wanted at least at 60" replacement. The biggest set they offered was 55" and they would not budge. I went ahead and bought the 55" for around $800. I then went to Fry's Electronics and told them the whole story. They took the TV and gave me store credit for the retail value of $2500. Sony told me over the phone that the optical block issue was a known problem. They also told me that a couple of years ago they had an offer to repair the TV at no charge but that the offer had lapsed. That's when they offered the new TV at the discounted price.

Hmmm...the Sony rep that I spoke with today claimed that their offer of a free repair of the optical block never applied to the KDF-__XBR950 models. Perhaps he was misinformed.

I used to own a KDF-60XBR950 and it used a 3 panel LCD rear projection technology. This technology did not have the "green blob" problem that the later LCOS technology has. Those are the sets that had replacement offers. LCOS is Liquid Crystal On Silicon.
The KDF___XBR950 sets did have problems with the fans (4 of them) inside plugging up with dust which led to over heating problems and warped doors. When I called to order a new door a couple of years ago, Sony told me about a repair program where they replaced all the fans, the warped door, and cleaned the insides of the TV. Took the experienced tech almost 3 hours. My chassis was not warped however. Doubt that could be fixed.

Well I definitely have a "blue blob" issue that the tech today said is being caused by dust and an optical block that needs to be replaced. I hope Sony will stand behind their product and pay a good portion of the repair bill. Call me crazy but I think a TV that cost over $6,000 should last more than 6 years.
splinke 10-21-10, 02:03 PM The early SXRD (LCoS)-based models had contaminated optical blocks that caused "green blobs" to appear within a few months. While the 3LCD-based XBR950 optical blocks do not have the same problem, they are also latently defective and tend to develop blue and/or yellow discolorations over time due to premature degradation of parts in the blue light path. The SXRD models have additional similar defects that cause degradation and discolorations over time. For details, see the web site linked in my signature below.
splinke 10-21-10, 02:13 PM The lamp overheating/melting issue is another latent defect in the "XBR950" and "WE" models. Any Sony employee or agent who tells you that you are out-of-luck if you have the issue, or who forces you to spend additional money on a replacement TV is either ignorant or unethical. I have heard this story many times now, so I think it is clear that this unethical behavior is heavily ingrained in Sony's corporate culture.
Here are the facts:
There is a class action lawsuit (http://sites.google.com/site/sonylcdrptvproblems/sony-class-action-lawsuits#TOC-2003-2004-3LCD-Lamp-Overheating-Iss) for the overheating issue.
While that lawsuit is pending, Sony has issued a warranty extension (http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?&news_id=261&mdl=KF60WE610) for the problem (perhaps to reduce the likelihood of success of the lawsuit).
The warranty extension currently runs through March of 2011.
Based on the warranty extension, Sony is required to "...repair the lamp access door and any other components damaged as a result at no charge for any of the covered televisions." That includes all of the surrounding parts, including the main case, which they do not replace.
Federal warranty law ensures that, if a company is unwilling or unable to perform a warranty repair, they are obligated to replace your TV free of charge with a "reasonably equivalent" TV.
See my Lamp Overheating Issue (http://sites.google.com/site/sonylcdrptvproblems/lamp-overheating-issue) page for details.
zengel442 10-31-10, 05:33 PM Howdy.. been reading posts here and thought I'd add my troubles too. Have a KDF-60XBR950... Had several bulbs replaced but now the screen is scrolling, black out for a second or two, blinking.. In between, I have a good picture but it's really annoying.. any ideas? doesn't sound like the over heating that a lot of you guys have.. :)

Update: Parts were ordered on Thursday and the technician should be over to repair my set towards the end of this week. The repair estimate was just under $1,000 and Sony ended up agreeing to pay 75%, so my bill will be around $250. I feel this is acceptable for a 6 1/2 year old TV.

Even if you don't think your problem is arising from the overheating issue, it is probably in your best interest to check for it anyway.

2nd Update: repairs were completed on Wednesday, exactly per the estimate. The picture looks great again and I am hoping that this set will last several more years before it needs to be replaced. Kudos to Sony for standing behind their product.
Just celebrated my 7th Anniversary with my beloved KDF70XBR950. After 2 replaced bulbs, a replaced warped lamp door 3 years ago, the screen glare and no HDMI the 70" picture is still something held in awe by friends especially during sporting events. With that being said I know the end is near having noticed a 2nd discolored lamp door and the approaching 3/31/2011 date.
Any thoughts on what to move onto? (can't really see going smaller after 7 years unless somebody can convince me that going to 60" isn't that big of a deal)
and/or
How to approach Sony about a final fix or compensation?

If you have any warping, cracking, or melting of parts other than the lamp door itself before the 3/31/2011 deadline, Sony is required to provide a free replacement that is comparable to your current TV. However, the largest one they have is 60". Insist that you get the free replacement, though.
Unfortunately, 70" models are very hard to come by and very expensive, unless they are DLP rear-projection, which is questionable technology.
brie_guy 12-08-10, 02:19 AM I missed the deadline for getting an optical block repair or replacement? Wasn't Sony obligated to notify all known set owners of the extended coverage? ... they didn't notify me. How did they disseminate that information?
Are there any solutions other than replacing the OB? ... internal cleaning?
How much can one expect to pay for an OB replacement (DIY or Service Tech)?
BTW, FWIW, I was hoping to use my American Express one-year Extended Warranty. I just found out that it only applies if "the combined length of the manufacturer's warranty and any purchased service contract does not exceed five years." I extended my original one-year warranty with a five-year service contract, for a total of six years ... so Amex denied my claim!
Corvette6769 03-25-11, 05:25 PM This thread sure went dead. My Sony KDF-70XBR950 developed the Optical Block symptoms. On the phone with Sony now. So far they have offered to exchange a 46" (Yugo) for my 70" (Cadillac).

vando45 03-28-11, 10:41 AM Check out "I Have A Defective Sony TV" on Facebook. You need to contact Sony Listens. Check out your lamp door for melting/warping, there is an extended warranty for that.
Just an FYI... The AppleTV Second Generation is NOT compatible with this HDTV. I've been told an older firmware did work but I cannot confirm that. I have verified that 4.2, 4.2.1, and 4.2.2 do not work. For whatever reason it doesn't understand the EDID information the HDTV gives out and goes into a 480p 4:3 mode where there are black bars on the sides and everything looks tall and skinny. I spent several hours on the phone with tech support and eventually returned the device for a refund. Some people claim that Apple doesn't support using an HDMI to DVI cable to connect an AppleTV however, that isn't true and they even sell such a cable for just that purpose. I just wanted to let people know it is not compatible with this TV and if they solve the problem in the future I will post an update.
keithggg 05-31-11, 11:14 AM I was getting intermittent 6 blinks so I ordered up a G1 board.
I want to install this board without electrocuting myself. I've played around in PC for years but TVs always give me pause due to the high voltage/amps.
I've taken the back off the set and can see the board, I can see two capacitors just waiting to discharge and knock me on my ass. Is there a method to discharge these caps besides waiting or hitting the power switch without being plugged in?
I pretty much plan to unplug everything on the board, keeping track of how to plug it all back in. (unplug the grounds last?) Unscrew the board, lift it out, put the new one in and plug everything back in.
Is there anything else I should be concerned about?
Anybody interested in buying the old board? Supposedly, it's just one IC that's faulty. :)

Don't worry about it, as long as the tv has been unplugged for a few hours there won't be any charge left. G1 changeout is pretty straightforward.
Take the opportunity to vacuum out the lamp fan as best you can, a trouble spot on these models. They can get so caked with dust that they can't blow any air at all.
keithggg 06-03-11, 04:58 PM G1 board replacement seemed to go fine. Keeping the wires off the heat sinks is a pain. TV came on. Then it went off. Then I got mad and pressed the power button by hand and the tv came on. Turned tv off and unplugged.
Couldn't find link to clear BOVP, lamp, and lamp door codes.
Planning next move.
Next move won't be replacing QBox on a 7 year old TV.

Resetting diag screen from SM:
- The results display is not automatically cleared. In case of repairs, check the self-diagnosis screen and be sure to return the results display to "0".
- If the results display is not returned to "0" it will not be possible to judge a new malfunction after completing repairs.
Method of Clearing Results Display
1. Power off (Set to the standby mode)
2. "Display" -> "Channel 5" -> "Vol Down" - "Power"
3. "Channel 8" -> "Enter"
To properly exit self-diag screen, you have to power down now.
END
Are you still getting the same number of flashes?
keithggg 06-06-11, 11:12 AM My assumption is that not consistently clearing the code isn't the issue. I put in the the new board and the TV stays on for a few minutes and goes off. I've cleared the codes at least twice. Same BOVP error every time, no new codes that I can recall. I looked over the schematics and come to the conclusion that the IC reading the 17 V DET from the G1 board must be the problem.
I suppose I can try again now that the set has been off for two days.
It is pretty much a goner though. Bought a samsung 8000 over the weekend.

What a dilemma..
I remember in 2004 buying what I thought was my last TV. A beautiful 70” Sony Grand WEGA. What a product! New technology that was advertised as superior to anything available at the time and would last a lifetime. Of course I struggled with the $7,000 I paid for it but figured over the long years it would be in service (like all the other Sony products I’ve owned) it would be well worth it.
In less than a year overheating problems and lamp failures occurred. No big deal I thought. The service people replaced some major components and all seemed well for a few years.
It is the centerpiece of my family room and now I cringe and am embarrassed every time I walk by it. The big blue discolored blob in the center of the screen makes watching anything unpalatable.
So what to do, reading the posts here I understand the exchange options but I want the 70” that I paid for. I’d appreciate any advice on how this dilemma might be resolved.

If it were me I would contact Kevin in the post above and see what Sony would be willing to do for you. I had mine repaired recently and was pleased when Sony stepped up and paid three-fourths of the $1,000 it cost to have the blue blob go away. I also have grown accustomed to the 70" screen size and am hoping to keep the TV for at least several more years, to get more of my money's worth if nothing else.

Corvette6769 06-23-11, 03:05 PM UPDATE; After several hours run-around on March 24 when I called Sony support, I was insulted and offended by the "solution" offered by the last Sony employee I was transferred to.
Since then, at the advice of Steve Linke, JBaumgart, and others I have been communicating with SonyListens via mail (my repeated requests for a phone call have gone unanswered).
So far I am no better off than I was when I called Sony Customer support 90 days ago.
First, I was instructed to call 888-993-7669, at which point, after several transfers, I was disappointed to be given similar insulting offers as before.
To offer me a KDL60EX720 (retails online for $2495 including shipping (http://cameras.abesofmaine.com/search#w=KDL60EX720&asug=)) as a replacement for my $7000.00 Sony KDF70XBR950 is an absolute outrage. But then to demand that I pay $950.00 + local sales tax on top of it all is ludicrous.
Then by email, yesterday, SonyListens offered KDL60NX720 (retails online for $2,670.04 including shipping (http://www.macmall.com/s?rch&q=KDL60NX720)) as a replacement for my $7,000.00 Sony KDF70XBR950 is just as bad, especially if I am expected to pay $1254.00 + tax out of pocket that I do not have.
As you can see from my postings here back in 2004, I was one of Sony's best advocates. I can be just the opposite if if Sony chooses to mistreat me.
Steve Linke and I share more than just first names.
Believe me, as a matter of principal, I will not go away quietly on this matter.
Heyeddie 06-24-11, 09:12 AM Hi,
I need to show the blob effect on my 70" xbr 950 and I'm wondering if there is a menu page that will give a white background in order to better show the developing yellow blob on my tv. Any and all comments are appreciated.:D
It seems that they are varying widely on their replacement offers. I was just offered a KDL-55ex500 for $200+taxes, or a KDL-60EX720 for $1075 + taxes.
I asked specifically for the NX720 and was told that they aren't offering that TV. Why wouldn't I be able to get a top-of-the-line TV now when that's what I paid for back when I got my original TV!
My TV is a KDF-60XBR950, and is failing with the optical block issue.
I haven't decided what I'll do... I guess it's this or small claims court.
frottage 09-03-11, 07:01 PM I've had the 60xbr950 since sometime in late 2003 or early 2004 iirc and a couple of days ago I started to notice a purplish/bluish blob forming near the bottom of the screen. Based on the forums posts it appears I too am suffering from a bad optical block :( It's been a great set and was wondering what those people having blob issues have done. Have "most" gotten sony to replace the optical block or some sort of replacement offer? After the holiday weekend in the US, I'll try to contact sony tech support to see if anything can be done, but I'm not hopeful based on all the information I've seen so far.

That's one of the sets that Tristate can rebuild light engines for. As I understand it, if they are out of stock it means that you send in the old one and wait a couple weeks for the work to be done on it.

Just posting to let everyone know that I recently had my optical block repaired by Tristate Module due to blue blobs on the screen. The cost was $299 and it took ~2 weeks. I removed and installed the part which took about 2 hours, a screw driver and some patience. The picture is now back to its former glory. I also e-mailed sony listens and was able to get a 55EX700 for $250 as compensation for my issue with the optical block.

Nuke and ChuckF...thanks for that info....use the blob as a reason to get a new 1980x1080 set or ~$350 (well plus my time) to rebuild the 950 gives me options...or maybe even both :D I just hate to get rid of the 950...when it works well, the picture is still fantastic.

KDL60EX720 for $1825.00 + local sales tax
Seems a tad bit on the high side. The rep said I could call back in a week or more and it may change.

I actually asked for a smaller 40" set since I wanted to buy the 65hx929 to replace the 60xbr950 but even the offer I was given for the 40ex720 was nothing better than I can do online so it makes no sense for me to jump on any of them and limit my legal options in future.
On one hand I applaud sony for trying to make things right, but on the other, their special replacement offers which aren't that special at all make no sense. : smh :

I maintain the informational web site (https://sites.google.com/site/sonylcdrptvproblems/) on Sony optical block and related problems with their 2002-2007 rear projection liquid crystal TVs. Sony had been running an "optical block program" for about 1-1/2 years in which owners of these failed TVs received discounts off newer direct-view LCD TVs in exchange for a legal release. This program was abruptly terminated today, and the "I Have A Defective Sony TV" Facebook page, with tens of thousands of customer posts, was turned off.
If you have a pending settlement with Sony for a failed optical block, you should probably try to resolve it quickly, as it is unknown whether Sony will be offering any future program. There is an alternative Facebook page called "I Still Have a Defective Sony TV (https://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Still-Have-a-Defective-Sony-TV/200792536623139)" that can be used for general discussion/complaints.
splinke 10-27-11, 09:09 PM Please note that the lamp overheating issue is still under an extended Sony warranty through March 31, 2012. Everybody with WE or XBR950 models should periodically check for evidence of heat-induced melting or cracking around the lamp area. See my Lamp Overheating Issue (https://sites.google.com/site/sonylcdrptvproblems/lamp-overheating-issue) page for details.

With the 4.4.4 update (and possibly one of the others between 4.2.2 and 4.4.4) the second generation Apple TV or ATV2 works great with the XBR950 series. You have to manually select the 720p@60HZ resolution in the Audio/Video menu (it auto selects an SD 4:3 resolution) but after that it works great! Glad Apple was able to solve the problem via software.
