Thanks Peter, maybe something is wrong with my stb. I have tried everything from channel searches to rebooting.

Have you checked the orientation of your antenna lately? I don't know about your setup, but even if the antenna gets out of alignment by so much as an inch, I will totally lose stations (mostly 30.1 and 7.1).

I did notice tonight that Comcast was showing the Marlins game in HD on channel 181 on FSN. I have not noticed that before. Maybe they are looking to add that station to the HD lineup.

Quinton-

I was doing some rewiring in my HT Sunday about 4PM and was checking signals with my 921 and HR10-250. I received their signals on both but thought 4.1 and 7.1 were weak from recall of what I got before. 4.1 even had some pixelation and I'm within eyesight of the towers. I don't think it had anything to do with my setup here because the work I was doing had nothing to do with antenna, just labeling the cables and doing some pulling out of old components connected with DVHS recording. I haven't checked those channels since but will keep a closer eye on them.

I just bought a 60" Sony with the QAM tuner module and am now recieving all the HD and SD broadcasting without the cablebox, except for TNT.
Does anyone know if Comcast is still sending it on 106.2 ? or is it now scrambled?

I'm having constant trouble with the comcast motorola box here in middleburg. It pixelates and hangs when I watch shows On Demand. In addition when I FF and Rewind shows the box lags. I'll push the ff button 3 time and and it only goes to FF1 then after a about 15-20 secs it goes to FF3 and by that time i've already pushed the play button and it's FF'd through what I wanted to watch. It's such a pain in the ... I've had the signal checked coming into the house and it's strong. Is there a problem with the motorola box, DCT3412? Anyone have any solutions or is this just the way the box is?

I just came back from comcast, turning in my 6412III for a 3412 for exactly the same reasons. It's like it has a "memory leak". Unplugging cures it for a while, but that's not acceptable.

Disappointed that the 3412 isn't sure to be a cure. I've been through quite a few of the Moto boxes, and each one eventually goes bad in some way.

Good Day All,

Does anyone have ESPN HD?
Does its programming differ from ESPN or ESPN2?Programming is the same on the HD and standard versions of ESPN and ESPN2. Of course, it looks a lot better, and you can see more of the pitch (which is great for spotting off the ball runs, seeing where through balls are going, etc.). But the content is the same.

As far as where to watch it... Besides someone's house, I suppose Sneakers might be a good bet.

I doubt there will be much of a soccer crowd there. (I don't know where to find that in Jacksonville.) But the TVs are big and the cheerleader outfits the waitresses wear are nice. :)

Thanks for the info - i did the same thing, checked the forum to see if there's any talk of adding it before monday and saw the good news, don't know how i missed it in the guide earlier.

Now the question - is this permanent? I've heard the rational that the channel isn't important b/c there's not much interesting on it anyhow, but I think mlb and ncaa football and basketball are pretty interesting to have in HD!

Dunno. Do you also have a weak fuzzy signal on the analog channels?

Twice I've had to complain to Comcast about a poor signal and they have come out and replaced wet/bad filters in the boxes outside my house. In my case there are restrictive filters both on the outside of my house and also in a post on the street in my front yard. They also sold me $50 amplified splitter that helped things somewhat.

Both times it helped the problem.

- Tom

My signal had been deteriorating for a while. So when I got my cablecard in January - I asked the technician to look at everything. He found that our amplifier was burnt out - and that we had the largest fire ant's nest I have ever seen under the green cover on the lawn. The ant's nest had pretty much destroyed the connections there. The technician was surprised that anything worked at all! A lot of our cable stuff is outside - and - like all things that are outside in Florida - they are in a constant state of entropy. So it doesn't hurt to have a technician come and take a look at things every once in a while. Robyn

Now the question - is this permanent? I thought - maybe wrongly - that it took the "HD Special Events" slot, which made me wonder if it was temporary. But it may not be. I already deleted the message Comcast sent to my cable box announcing the addition, but I seem to remember thinking that they made it sound like a permanent addition.

Robert...

How far are you from the antenna (almost all digital signls are off the same antenna)? I'm about 10 miles and am running an amplified Square Shooter 2000 in tha attic...everything is coming in fine. As you'll see in this thread, NBC and ABC are broadcasting their digital signals on a VHF channel, which is the cause of your problems...attics eat them alive. I had the same issues until I changed to the SS 2000. Now everything is fine.

I have a few questions to clear up some confusion i have as to what all of my options are to receiving HD in Jax

First off, I've been using comcast digital cable with their HD DVR STB for almost 2 years now, and it's been great. However, right now I'm fighting with comcast over a dispute that I won't get into here. After it's all said and done, I'm going to be getting rid of my STB altogether and stick with basic cable. Obviously I still want to get HD channels, but I'm a little confused. From what I understand, I basically have two options:

1. get an antenna (outdoor is not a problem for me)
2. use the QAM channels

But I'm not quite sure what all I have to purchase to get either of these to work. I have a Toshiba 46H84 HD-ready TV (won't let me make a link to it). I'm also planning on making my own PVR box from a spare computer in the house. I understand this forum isn't for PVR, so I won't ask any PVR questions, but thought I should mention it.

so, to get OTA, what all do I have to purchase? obviously I'll need an antenna, but will I also need to purchase some sort of HDTV tuner? or can i just connect the antenna directly to my TV via coax? same questions for QAM... I have never heard of QAM before until reading through this massive thread today. What all do I need to get QAM channels? i plan on keeping comcast basic cable (no STB). will I have to purchase a QAM tuner since I'm pretty sure my TV doesn't have it built in?

Also, it appears that ABC and NBC HD are a problem for both antenna's and QAM in Jacksonville. Anyone here been able to get these 2 channels w/o Comcast's STB?

from what I can tell your TV does not have a built in HD tunner, so you will need a HDTV tuner, it also appears it doesn't have the cablecard reader either, so you are SOL (unless the HDTV tuner you buy has a cable card slot and I am not sure they exist, but probably do - someone else will have to answer that for me) for receiving QAM -- can someone else confirm.

I have 2 of the Myhd130 cards in 2 different pc's(this card will not work with multiple Myhd cards in the same pc.)

I currently get all of the local channels from Comcast Qam using this card, as well as much of the digital simulcast channels. I can not get Discovery HD, TNTHD, or ESPNHD becuase of encryption. I can record any of the channels I receive at any time as well. On the second card I have a Home Depot Antenna in the attic, and I get all of the locals over the air as well. This includes the multiple channels of the local religous station. The benefit is the ability to record to hard drive, and burn hd content to dvd to play back on my equiptment. However, the drawback is that I have to use the Myhd software, which is pretty good, but not quite as easy as using the dvr that comcast rents me. So I pretty much watch my stuff on computer, and my wife uses the dvr. Hope this helps. Troy.

A year or so ago I returned my Comcast DVR and dropped back to limited basic after they phoned me and insisted I'd have to upgrade to their Digital Silver package in order to keep the DVR service.

Now I just use 2 PCHD cards, a MyHD and a Fusion F3Q, both in the same PC. I get mostly the same channels listed in the previous post. And I can still record 2 things at the same time if needed. I still sort of miss the convenience of the HD DVR after years of happy analog Tivo use but Comcast just made me too angry with their demand (and subsequent discovery of a teaser rate) to be willing to put up with it.

In some Comcast areas (don't know about Jax) you can subscribe to basic digital cable and rent the Moto DCT-6200 STB for I think about $17/mo. Or maybe Tom's experience means that local Comcast won't allow that even for non-DVR users.

If they do allow it, it's simple to record to a PC using a firewire cable.

BTW, there's nothing wrong with discussing HTPC issues here wrt local conditions.

Thanks for yalls input... I went out and moved the antenna some more and I am now getting all but the 17.1, 17.2. My tv did not pick up the channel 7's before when i did the auto set up but did this last time. It is my understanding that all the antennas are in the avenues mall area, not sure about 17.1? It may be at a diff heading? The pix quality is really good, when are we going to get the other 250 channels in OTA? I would love discovery OTA or maybe Bob Ross in HD, I wish they had the tech when he was still painting.

Actually, the antenna farm is located in the Hogan Road area. You can find some good information here at antenna web:

http://www.antennaweb.org

Just fill in your street address and you will get the exact aiming directions for your antenna. I should point out, as many of us have discovered, that sometimes moving the orientation of an antenna even an inch or less can cause some stations to come in or be lost.

The only HD stations you will be able to receive over the air are the local ones. All the others such as Discovery HD, Universal HD and the like can only be had either through Comcast digital cable, or DirecTV or Dish.

anyone having trouble with 47.1? I get 2 channels of 30.1-1 for cbs and 1 for fox, very strange. I am also having to do auto scan about 1/2 times a week to get my lost channels back? Do the stations signals go away or ....? I thought once I dialed in my ant thats it, similiar to sat......set it and forget it?

I have a CM outdoor ant that works great, set it up and recvd channels but now channels go out then do auto scan... I call the stations and they say all is well?

Peter- I'm assuming you are resp to me? If so Thanks. Crazy thing is I have a brand new panny 60u HD plasma? I would not think it is the tv but...? I am having a hard time with the notion that the signals may be going in and out but the stations say they are 100%?

Don Landis
07-13-06, 11:05 AM
A possibility- While stations will often only examine their RF output and report all is well, with digital there is much more to it than just RF. PISP is an important issue with proper signal reception and is dependent on accurate PSIP generator operation as well as a receiver that uses PSIP also be properly configured, both in it's behind the scenes software as well as how you have it configured.

In the case of 47-1 I recall Jerry mentioning that his system required specific channel assignments for HDTV which in some TV receivers would not translate properly. (Hope I remebered this correctly as it was quite awhile ago) These conditions may have changed but the other day I saw I was getting WTEV as rf19 and not WTEV 47-1. I thought this strange but as soon as I saw it, it went away the next day. What this tells me is that maybe at that time Jerry and engineers at WTEV may have been making changes to their PSIP generators. At any rate, I really don't know but its gone now and all is normal.

Oh, one more thing- This rf19 was seen on the HDTIVO HR10-250 which will see channels without PSIP while my Dish Netwrok receivers, require PSIP properly implemented to work. While the TIVO saw the channel as rf19, the Dish Network receivers didn't see the channel at all, like they were off the air. Back when PSIP was first being implemented, Dish Network jumped the gun with their PSIP requirement about a month early in the PVR-921 software update. That was when WTLV and WJXX both implemented PSIP late to their signals. The 921 lost all WTLV and WJXX until they began to send PSIP. Some of you may recall me in communication with Bill Schneider at the station back then working with him in getting PSIP going. I'm no PSIP expert but I do know some engineers who are and after getting them together, Bill got the tables correct and his signal popped on the 921 like a light switch!

Anyway, not saying this was the cause of your problems, just that there is more to proper reception than just the stations RF.

Daddy Freddy
07-13-06, 12:37 PM
Don- thank you for your thoughts. If I am understanding you right- I do not have any problems; it is station issues OR do I need to reconfigure something? I am recving local prog via a CM outside ant. My ant runs directly to the tv. I don't know if that matters or not.

John

Don Landis
07-13-06, 03:53 PM
If you continue to have problems while other don't, then you need to examine what you are doing more closely. But, based on the history of local broadcast through these development years, Station problems besides RF signal have been the root cause as well.

Daddy Freddy
07-14-06, 01:50 PM
Thanks Don. I have no idea who the people you mention are or about psp whatever? I am no tv expert or care to be. I do own a HDTV, hooked up outside ant, pointed to the antenna park on hogan road, connected it to my tv and do not get 47.1. Just trying to find out if this is operator error and figured this was the place to ask. Not really sure what there is to look at more closely?

you're not alone in not getting 47-1. I really hadn't paid attention as to WHEN it failed on me, but when I tried to playback Big Bother All stars for the SO, I had nothing but gray screen. Direct TV/Tivo HR10-250. All the other HD OTA were in fine shape, just nothing for 47-1. Naturally it was on the 47 DTV channel just fine (beamed from the sat, and it's not in HD anyway, so no problem there). I checked it out this AM before work and still nothing. I did a restart on the system and will check it when I get home, but something is definitely smelly in Northern Europe.......

Don Landis
07-14-06, 09:26 PM
Guys- I can pretty much confirm that WTEV 47-1 (RF 19.2) is having PSIP problems. I took a look at it just now and they have some errors that is causing any receiver that is PSIP dependent like your Dish Network receivers to see the RF signal but cannot translate the signal to a program image. The HD TIVO HR 10-250 does not work that way and ignores the PSIP information altogether and uses the subscription sevices downloaded to each TIVO via DirecTV for it's channel information.

I'd report it to Jerry, but unfortunately I misplaced my contact info for him. Gator99- you reading this? I believe you have it, don't you? Give Jerry a call (cell phone) and if he needs help with a one check point with two receivers PSIP dependent and one not PSIP dependent I can give him feedback. I'm seeing the WTEV- 47-1 just fine on the HR 10-250 but both my Dish Network receivers can't and they have excellent RF signals inbound on 19.2 Just a black screen.

I'd be curious to know what they did since I recall WTEV was PSIP compliant fine not too long ago. I have some PVR recordings on my spare hard drive for the 921 that I could reinstall and see when the PSIP was still good.

Daddy- Freddy- PSIP is Program system information Protocol and was required of digital stations in two stages. Forst one was the Station call sign channel and clock. Then I recasll about a half year later they began to require guide program information. The first part is used by some newer design receivers while the second part is not generally recognized by any exceprt the latest receiver / tuners on the market. The first requirement is necessary to create the RF to market call sign and channel number remapping. If the PSIP tables are incorrectly set up you will get the indications I'm seeing with the result being good signal but no channel visible. IF this is like what happened to BIll at TV 12 then Jerry will hacve a tough time detecting the problem until someone report the problem and he may need assistance with viewer reports as his equipment may report good signal like those of us with HR10-250's see. As whith what happened at 12, awhile back, station engineers aren't knowing which receivers require it and which don't I made a special effort to learn that about my equipment so I could monitor the problem.

Don Landis
07-14-06, 09:40 PM
OK, I just tried a rescan of the channels and WTEV 47-1 got remapped! Not sure when it was fixed but maybe those of you having trouble try to rescan for it again. I now have WTEV proper PSIP on both DishNetwork receivers!

Daddy Freddy
07-15-06, 07:10 AM
Don- confirmed, did a new scan and 47.1 showed up. I do feel much better now that it does confirm a station issue vs my new tv. Bottom line is HD OTA is nice.

Thanks for the feedback

Don Landis
07-15-06, 11:13 AM
Glad your results matched mine. Yes, I have no idea why their PSIP got messed up but it appears WTEV tech staff were on it and with a rescan it is fixed at our end. If it hadn't been for my experience with WTLV 2 years ago I wouldn't have recognized the indicators.

Yeah, ditto here.. when I got home, 47.1 was up and running as always--in my case perhaps the restart did the trick. Anyway, all is all set and going. very odd, but I guess it happens from time to time. Did kinda wonder if the HR10-250 was going out to lunch tho--I've had very good luck with it (compared to some reports). My only major complaint is either the networks are screwing with the start times or the HR10-250 time syncher is just a tich behind. Often times I get a recording and miss the first seconds (up to about 30-Minute) of a show. Yeah, I know it's supposed to synch to the satellite and all that, but my HDVR20s don't ahve that issue. Same season pass, same everything, just different recording hardware--HDVR20 is good to go, Hr10-250 misses some of the front end.

I never had outage on the HR10-250 but it may have if they went down and I just wasn't watching at the time. Ususally my Dish stuff will go out and stay out until I do a scan or reboot as you stated. Looks like crises is over for now. They may have just had a PSIP glitch and were on it ASAP.
The funny thing about digital station ops is that these are very new and sometimes when things break, they have to get a part shipped in. the analog station ops will often have spares in stock at the station for a much faster turn around time. That plus the fact that with digital there is just so much more hardware in the system that can break down vs. the analog station.

Pretty intersting stuff -- www.jacksonville.com (Florida Times Union website) has produced an HD video of the Kingfish tournament (I am downloading as I type) -- they also indicate they will produce more, but not all of their stories will be in HD for download.

check it out. - not sure if it is true HD material - but after viewing it does look pretty decent. For those that want a direct link (see below) but you might need to register.

Looks like ABC forgot to flip the switch for the 16x9 feed of the British open....quite "normal" for WJXX weekend sports coverage. At this rate I predict it will be at least 5 years before all of the locals pass 5.1 and probably 10 years before we see any syndicated HD......so much for optimism in Jax.

Peter - thanks, but I just got off the phone, D* is sending me a new (refurbished unit) free (no shipping and NO extension to my 2 year commitment)

Thanks

Monster is also sending me a new 35000 MKII to replace the unit that was hit (my existing unit and all my other equipement still works though, just the D* reciever was fried)

Yeah - I am currently not a big fan of D* (subscriber since 1995) and I have never been a fan of Monster's products, but I bought the 3500 MKII for $130 (shipped) a few months ago from parts express and thought at that price Monster can earn my $$s

I've got a list of my QAM channels I use in Jacksonville and I know that at my house ABC HD and NBC HD are 104-1 and 104-2 respectively. I just set up a new Panasonic TH-42PD60U for my dad and had it do a scan for all the QAM channels and these two channels are not showing up. This on the Orange Park Comcast QAM system. Are these channels mapped differently on the Orange Park system? I wouldn't think so, since all the other channels, PBS HD, CBS HD, etc. are all tuning in fine. Unfortunately, there isn't any way to manually tune in QAM channels so I'm just trying to figure out how to get him NBC and ABC HD. Thanks for any help....

Hi all, new member so if this information is in a "sticky" or something please let me know. I tried looking through this thread, but with 78 pages.....

Is there a list somewhere of the Comcast digital channels available to a digital tuner with a basic cable connection? Specifically, I have a digital tuner on my TV and when I hooked it up and did the set-up channel search it found a lot of digital and HD channels (just have basic cable). The channels seem to change now and then, and if I do a new search it may pick up new/different ones, but it also loads up my TV with hundreds of channels that don't have any signal.

For example:
103-1 INHD
103-2 INHD2
104-1 ABC HD
104-2 NBC HD

I was going to subscribde to the HD service, but I didn't want to have to get a cable box, and once I saw that I was getting most of the HD channels I was happy with that ;)

If I had a list in one place, it would make it faster to delete the blank channels without having to wait to see if there is anything on them.

From what I read on here, I *think* what I'm looking for is a list of "QAM" channels ?

I've got the same problem in Ponte Vedra. For some reason, my Vizio's QAM tuner doesn't tune in either ABC or NBC HD (104-1 and 104-2). However, I have a FusionHDTV card that does, as well as an LG HDTV receiver. It's weird because all 3 QAM tuners pick up channels that another tuner doesn't. My guess is there's something non-standard about the way channels 104-1 and 104-2 are being sent, and you won't be able to tune those in with your Panny.

Well, that's no good. I too have a Sony DHG-HDD500 and an LG HDTV box as well and they pick up those channels fine. My buddy has a Sony DLP and it works fine too.

If anyone out there has a Panasonic with a built-in tuner, please chime in if you can somehow tune these two channels. If you enter in 104-1 or 104-2 manually, I just get the 'Signal Not Found' message, which leads me to believe it can't and won't pick up those channels, but hopefully there is a way somehow...

I have a Panasonic plasma with built in digital tuner. I can get 104-1 and 104-2. It picks them up on the auto scan.

When I do a channel search, it tunes in heaps of channels

I saw the list on the first page, but that was pretty old and I think it changes periodically. Also, it would be nice to know if new channels get added (such as ESPN HD which I haven't been able to find.

Is there a list somewhere that is periodically updated?

Also: when the TiVo come out with digital tuners, would I be able to TiVo all these channels?????

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8206892&&#post8206892

..and noticed that others have seen the same thing. Some had contacted their station engineer after the first week of seeing the issues and their station engineer changed some settings on the Harris Encoder which made the blurs disappear:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8210665&&#post8210665

Has anyone else noticed the blurs during SNF?

Can someone give me the station engineer contact at WTLV so that I can pass this info on to him?

Kudos to the Stormtrack/HD team. I just finished watching it and thought the HD PQ was very good. It may seem hard to get very enthused about just a weather program but there is something nifty about local origination HD features of any sort, showing highdef pictures of things and places familiar to me.

If there were many shows following this lead I think it could bring the "local" back into OTA TV.

I put up a deep fringe antenna with amplifier about a month ago. Suddenly about a week ago, all I can receive are 4-1, 30-1. I am wondering if my amplifier has fried or maybe a bad connection somewhere in the coax. Any ideas? Signals were coming in great.

Replying to my own post for anyone else's info... I climbed the roof and had a bad connection at the 7777 amp. Signals good now, I am getting intermitent drops on some channels though, I may go back and redo all the connections.

Well, that just sucks!

Anybody watch the game last night using a cable DVR and notice some stuttering during fast pans? I also recorded this OTA and it didn't do the same. Couldn't be a low bit rate since it was SD, right?

Boselli was much better this week. But how low class was that big BlueCross ad ch47 displayed the whole game. Too bad CBS has the AFC rights and we are stuck with WTEV.

Although it's hard to complain about adding another HD channel, I certainly would have preferred UHD or NGCHD at this point in time. In the long run, NFLHD will be a nice addition as more games are added to their schedule. It just shows that sports still rule the HD landscape.

Lincoln's Wax
08-20-06, 11:53 PM
Well, I can complain about it. We've got FSN which is 98% off-air bandwidth wasting with that stupid logo screen they run, we've got ESPN2 which brings us exciting tee-ball games in HD for about an hour a day. Instead of a channel with some real programming, we get NFLHD. The only decent new stuff in HD on right now are the Mojo block of programs on inHD and they seem to want to expand that into a whole channel at some point, which I could get behind but if comcast doesn't start to offer some new non-sports channels by the end of the year, I'm pretty sure I'm going to dump them and just move to OTA.

Hey to all who may remember me.... Gator, Don, Jerry, Peter, Tom, and others who came to that forum breakfast WAY long ago-- not to mention everyone else who found this thread since I've been able to participate.

Overall things that I have seen have been good. I've only got D* and OTA, and I have to say that I was highly p***ed that I missed the local-produced HD Stormtrack that first night was broadcast, but as I read a few minutes ago, the ?repeat? that I did watch was actually the first HD broadcast.

Actually, it was quite an education. My wife even came! I used to be a DJ here on FM88 several years ago so I knew what a radio station control room was like, but that was my first time seeing the workings of the backbone of a TV station.

They run both CBS and FOX out of the same place. Before automation, there was literally someone who had to "throw the switch" to toggle between the local signal and network HD feed.

HD in Jacksonville has come a LONG way since then. That's why I was so excited to see the first locally produced HD program several days ago.

When you view the info guide on NFLHD on Ch. 184, it says to watch standard definition games, tune to ch. 180. I assumed that meant the NFL Network on ch. 412 would be moving to 180, but maybe they will keep NFL Network on 412, and just show the actual games on 180? In other words, another part-time sports channel just for showing NFL games in SD, not the full programming of NFL Network.

In any event, I sure hope we get UHD and NGCHD soon. As a tennis fan, it is painful to watch the U.S. Open in SD on USA.

I saw that rumor also, although it did come from a fairly reliable source (as much as you can rely on any rumor posted on an internet board). However, our Comcast system always seems to be a little slower to add channels than other parts of the country. If the rumor is true that Comcast will finally be getting HDNET, I'm not holding my breath that we will see it before the end of the year.

Thats true in some cases, but not in others. They were quick to add TNT-HD and ESPNHD2, which is great if you like little league. (sarcasm).

Good...but why wait until AFTER the broadcast of one of the channel's biggest events (MTV Awards)? So I guess we'll get UHD AFTER the US Open. This town desperately needs Verizon FIOS or AT&T Lightspeed to compete against Comcast. Hopefully it will soon come from BellSouth (soon to be AT&T), I know they have the infrastructure set up in the central offices.

I'm sorry if this has already been discussed in this thread, but I'm wondering If anyone else has noticed audio sync problems with WCWJ (WB)? I don't normally watch this channel, but once it changes over to the CW I'll be tuning in for Veronica Mars. My sister was watching it the other day, and the audio was noticably out of sync. I seem to recall noticing this a few months ago, but that could just be a made up memory.

My questions are: Is this a problem with this channel, and If so will the problem continue once it changes over to the CW?

cbs always has problems w/ their HD. they are the worst network at HD programming if you ask me. there is no reason why all NFL games shouldn't be in HD every Sunday. they only select 2 1:00 games per week to show in HD. rediculous. not to mention all the problems you mentioned like sync and skipping. it's very disappointing especially since they show more sports than any of the other local networks.

FishhyRen11

A couple things about Comcast that does dissapoint me...
One, the ads now showing on the DVR boxes at night (If it's Ad-driven I shouldn't have to pay for the box).
Second some of the local channels are encrypted, so if I want to view ABC and TLV12 in HD I have to pay another $10 a month for a box for my other TV! I think at least the OTA channels they are rebroadcasting should be in-the-clear so I don't have to pay for ANOTHER box!! $20 a month for boxes is stupid when I'm already paying so dang much for the service.

(Besides, I thought it was an FCC regulation for them to show the OTA channels in the clear!?)

I saw the ads on the guide for a few days several weeks ago, but not recently. I know Comcast got a load of complaints when they first appeared. I'm surprised they've been pulled already, and am just waiting for them to reappear. They are annoying because they reduce the size of the guide, and require an extra click to scroll past them.

FishhyRen11

The way I look at it as far as the ads go (Yes they are fairly anoying). If they can put the costs of getting all these new HD channels and other enhancements on the advertisers and keep our rates down and or lower our rates I am fine with them.

I do think we should see some benefit from them forcing ads in front of our faces.

But with corporate greed the way it is I wont hold my breath. Its a good thought although.

FishhyRen11
09-15-06, 09:54 AM
My point is that if you're paying $15 a month for EACH DVRHD box then you shouldn't be paying for ads. Now if you bought the service and the box(es) was/were included in the price it would be okay by me.

Just seems like they're double dipping their hands in my pocket. Especially since right now you HAVE to buy the box to view the channels but it's still an extra cost per month per TV.

I had what could be called "micro stuttering" in both the Auburn and UF games saturday. But comments in the programming threads heaped praise on the quality. So I guess it's a local problem with WTEV. Again.

Nationally, CBS seems to be the gold standard of HD football broadcasts. I sure wish it were true locally. WTEV always seems to have problems with macroblocking or pixelization during fast motion, and I also noticed the same stuttering problems during the UF game. I turned to the SD channel to compare and it was virtually unwatchable with so much stuttering.

I watch via Comcast, were these same problems apparent OTA?

After all this time as the worst HD station in JAX, it's got to be that management just doesn't care. I guess they'll start caring when Neilson starts measuring the HD audience in the future.

First of all let me say I love this forum, I have learned a ton here as I am Brand New to HD technology, I work on electronics in the navy so I understand the technology, just never read up on it.

After Autoprogam on my unit... channel 47.1 (My local CBS Network in HD) is auto installed for HD Over the Air. I tune to channel 47.1 and all works fine. I then tune to another channel... for instance 4.1 (My local ABC I think....) and that channel works fine. This is where my problem starts, when I then attempt to go to channel 47.1 again it is out of the programmed channels... and manually entering 47.1 does not allow me to access the channel either, it sends me to the analog channel 47. In order to access channel 47.1 again, I must run autoprogram again.

UPDATE!!!
After reading several hundred posts here and elsewhere, i believe the problem is more likely to be the OTA boradcast from WTEV-CBS in Jacksonville than my set. I have done the following...

Manually enter 19.3 as the selected station... sometimes WTEV will display, other times not.... Then enter 47.1 more often than not... WTEV CBS Jacksonville will display. Also, 47.1 sometimes will remain in the TV's Memory... other times, not... I do not have a way to get a numerical representation of the signal level, but the signal level bar is 5 out of 6. I do not believe the problem to be signal level either, but perhaps something to do with the PSIP signals or soemthing... still reading on that... Like I said, I am brand new to th HD world.

By the way, Phillips receommended that I return the entire unit to the stroe, they said it was liekley the Tuner Assembly that was bad. Sounds unlikely to me as ALL other channels work 100%.

Anyone have any ideas???

Well, one option that will cost you a little money is to do what I did: subscribe to Comcast's local only HD package ($9.95 a month which includes the rental of the HD receiver). The only hitch is that you have to subscribe to at least the basic analog cable tier (another $10).

Of course, you could always invest in a bigger antenna, possibly with an amplifier and maybe a higher mast.

I use D* for everything else. Last time I checked, I believe Jacksonville will not be getting the HD locals from D* until "sometime" next year.

We seem to be about middle-of-the-road compared to other Comcast systems. A few systems may have one or two other networks like UHD, but some others don't have the capacity to carry even half of what Jax has.

I'm a huge tennis fan so not having Wimbledon in HD is a big disappointment but there's always hope for next year. It was broadcast in HD in Great Britain, just not in the U.S.

What you are describing sounds more like an aiming problem with your antenna. Digital OTA can be very tricky. I have found that merely moving the antenna an inch or two to the left or right, or up or down makes the difference between receiving or not receiving a station.

A couple things:

This could be the issue with Fox and CBS (since they are co-owned by the same group) having some sort of issue with one of their critical pieces of equipment -- I will say though I have not seen this issue (yet) I am in O.P. viewing OTA.

or

Antenna issues - either aiming (minor adjustments like Peter said do have a varied effect) as well as maybe you guys might be getting too strong of a signal (for the life of me a can't remember the terminology for this -- someone chime in please) -- Twidget/Daddy Freddy - how close are you to the towers?

I'm sorry, but I'm not familar with the antenna you mentioned. Here are some random thoughts however:

With digital OTA, it isn't always about a high signal strength so much as a clean one. If the antenna you are using isn't directional, but rather omnidirectional, you might actually be experiencing a multipath problem. That would account for some erratic behavior in reception.

Also, some tuners are better at keeping a lock than others. At present, I have a Mistsubishi CRT RPTV that is getting its signal from a DirecTV 10-250 DVR, and the DVR gets its input from an antenna mounted in the attic. I get all stations fine with that arrangement, except Fox 30.1. For that, I have to resort to switching to a pair of rabbit ears in the garage. Believe me, I tried re-aiming, re-orienting, changing the pitch and yaw of the attic antenna to try and get all the stations at once, but it doesn't work. Now, to be fair, part of the problem is I don't want a roof mount, so I am sacrificing about 50% of the capability of the antenna by having it in the attic.

Contrast this to a Sony KDF-50E2000 I have in the bedroom, also being fed a signal from an attic antenna. The tuner in that pulls in all of the stations, Fox included, without a problem.

So, not to drive you crazy, but the problems you are experiencing could be part antenna and part tuner related. I say this only because I am not experiencing here in Fruit Cove the same issues you have.

I'm not much of a sports fan and haven't much even been following the football discussion here. But just for grins I recorded a half hour each of OTA and Comcast CBS NFL football this afternoon starting at 5:00. Comparing the file sizes shows they (single stream recordings) are less than 1% difference. This means Comcast is probably not doing any extra rate shaping to hurt the picture.

And both the OTA and Comcast recordings looked identical, both pretty good pictures. Brightness was maybe oversaturated on both, but it was that kind of a day and the crowd was brighter than the field (all wearing white?). And the camera work sometimes would zoom and pan on a player walking with the highly detailed crowd in the background. Waving a zoomed video camera around like this should be avoided and it does create blocky hard to compress material. But, all in all, I thought it was a pretty good picure from both sources, generally one I'd be satisfied with for a sporting event.

Not sure what the reported problems are.

I'm not sure what Comcast could be doing to the broadcast then, because CBS is consistently poor for every NFL and college footfall game I've seen.

The PQ is fine for static images but just about any motion at all, and the picture breaks up into many blocks like a bad YouTube video. The Jags/Skins game was no different. I'm watching on a 65" 1080p dlp and a 50" plasma, both of which exhibit the same problem. This blocking/pixelation only happens on WTEV/CBS football broadcasts, not on any other local station.

I don't have an antenna so I can't compare to OTA, but everything I've heard and read tells me that Comcast passes the signal unaltered.

Alabama/Florida game I saw pixelation, but for the Jags/Redskins game I did not see much if any.

As far as football is concerned in HD in Jax - I would say that NBC and CBS college games are even par (both pixelate) as far as ABC - they look better, but less detailed (probably because they are 720p (and my display is native 1080i, so it has to convert as well)

CBS to me is no worse than any other channel (1080i channel), it just happens to carry the sports programming that we all watch and will be more scrutinized.

And as far as you not believing, so be it.

I haven't had any other PQ problems with CBS/WTEV other than football games. But then, i don't recall watching anything else that had a lot of camera motion.

So you have pixelation on NBC and ABC? How about ESPN or Fox? I don't have any on any of those channels. Never have. ABC, ESPN and Fox are softer but that's probably an issue with 720p.

I watch as much football on the other channels as CBS so it's not a case of being more scrutinized.

You have minor pixelation on CBS? I have significant problems. Always have.

What else could cause it. The tuner in the comcast box? I've had 5 different STB's over the years since I've had HDTV. Also, if it was the tuner, why wouldn't it affect the other channels?

btw, any pixelation is unnacceptable, it just shouldn't happen. If you get pixelation on NBC or ABC or ESPN, then you shouldn't be happy about it either.

I'm having the same pixelization problems with WTEV football broadcasts as scolumbo described above. This problem does NOT occur with ABC, FOX, NBC, or ESPN. I have one 1080i RP LCD TV and one 720p LCD TV. The problem occurs on both TVs with and without the STB (I can pull in digital and unencrypted HD signals with the QAM tuner). I know the problem is not with my TVs because we watched the second half of the FL-AL game at a friend's home. The same pixelization problems were exhibited on their Panasonic plasma with a Comcast signal.

Today I rec'd some feedback from the WTEV engineer:

"Knowing you are on Comcast Cable is of great importance, this eliminates many possibilities of reception difficulties. As you may know our television station is directly connected to Comcast Cable via a fiber-optic cable. When we are offering CBS network on our digital channel in Standard or High Definition, we are connecting our CBS network satellite receivers directly to our digital transmitter and Comcast, and only switch out during local commercials.

Our station prides itself in providing the best possible transmission to our viewers and reviews daily any irregularities. We carefully review all viewers complaints and concerns regarding reception and quality issues. We have teams of experts that research and resolves these issues and finds ways to prevent them from ever happening again.

We appreciate our viewers taking the time and informing us when there is a reception or technical problem. I hope that I have reassured you that we are continuously reviewing and improving our product. Please feel free to call or e-mail me when you have a question or technical issue"

scolumbo - I only have pixelation on NBC and CBS as I stated above, no pixelation on the 720p channels (just a softer image), I do get pixelation (I agree it should not occur, but where is the problem occuring locally, at the main satelite feed, or at the game - a lot of variables)

I know by reading the HD programming threads it seems to be all over the board (some pixelate, others don't -- which probably means it is local - probably old equipment - just a guess) - I definately don't think it is our equipment (maybe once in a blue moon, but rather a problem with the provider (either locally, national or at the broadcast site) another issue for NBC would be the multicasting - It doesn't help, but CBS doesn't multicast (does it?) so who knows what the problem is?

It might just be 1080i vs 720p (old debate and I don't want to get involved.

Jerry (from CBS/Fox - locally) still reads these threads - a little less harsh critizicism (sp?) and more productive rants (with detailed specifics - time/channel/equipement/OTA vs cable vs??) would probably help. -- And by no means am I saying don't criticize, lets just be a little more constructive.

Today I rec'd some feedback from the WTEV engineer:

We have teams of experts that research and resolves these issues and finds ways to prevent them from ever happening again.

Is this a joke? With all the times this station didn't switch on the HD signal, I don't believe a word of the above.

Sorry if my rants sound harsh. I'm actually not disagreeing with you as much as just frustrated that we can't get the type of PQ that we should be experiencing based on observations from the HDTV community at large.

CBS's football HD broadcasts have been referred to as pristine, reference quality, and various other glowing terms in other places by people whose opinion I respect. Obviously, there is a lot of variability depending on a number of local factors, but I just know what we are getting is not the best it can be. Since WTEV doesn't multicast, I don't know what else they could be doing to the signal. An encoding problem?

I'll specify again that I experience these problems via Comcast using their 3412 STB/DVR (currently) on both a 65" HP 1080p dlp, and a 50" Fujitsu 768p plasma. I would note that others have reported similar problems via OTA. It would be useless to list specific games snce it happens on virtually every one broadcast by CBS, although admittedly some are worse than others. The UF/Alabama game stands out as particularly bad.

New here and I'm glad to have found this thread. These two stations have been driving me nuts. I have also been in contact Mr Crall for both stations as they are both owned by Clear Channel. The only thing I have been advised from them was to have a specialist come out inspect my equipment. Is there anything I can do?

Personally, I do believe that they care. As long as there is not full automation of the switching equipment, there is bound to be some "human error" once in a while.

Sometimes, however, the lack of HD may be due to the fact that a network feed has been time shifted due to some unforseen event. In those cases, I don't believe any of the local stations currently have HD recording capability, so their only choice is to broadcast the SD version.

The last time we checked, the reason for the lack of HD recording and no 5.1 sound equipment was due to budget issues. Unless things have changed, the digital stations are not a significant source of income or viewership (naturally, this will change in February, 2009 when the analog signals are shut down).

scolumbo - its not that they are harsh, but to help WTEV/WAWS and other stations that monitor our problems we should try to give them specific info not general info.

As far as your comment regarding the Fl vs Ala game being particulary bad - I would disagree -- Florida Won :) :) :) -- put the picture quailty was below average.

Sikki - welcome to the Jax thread -- give us some addional info (location - west/east - or more specific details on your location) are you surrounded by alot of trees? Is your antenna outside or in your attic?

I'm in west Orange Park, right by Doctors lake. The antenna is out side of the house about a little higher than the peek of the roof with no trees higher than the antenna in my yard or in the 4 houses in the direction the antenna is pointing. Sometime it comes in just fine and if I'm home I can move the antenna a little to the left or right and get it dialed in. The next day I'm getting drops again. So I can't trust taping things if I'm not home.

I am 250 yards off Doctors Lake (northside off f Doctor lake drive)

fromwhat you said it sounds like you need to find the "sweet spot" and make sure your antenna does not move

Just for the record, I also get horrible pixelation on CBS HD footbal games, in particular, the shots coming from the low angle field cameras. I'm also confused on why everyone raves about CBS HD Football.....

FYI: The Southpoint customer center is now issuing 3416 HD DVR's.

Do you think maybe it's because they don't get the horrible pixelation we do?

Great, thanks. As soon as I can get all the shows off both my 3412's, I'll be down there trading in again.

I took the opportunity to watch parts of 3 HD football games shown simultaneously on ABC, NBC, and CBS to compare PQ. I spent a considerable amount of time switching between stations and watched on both a 65" 1080p DLP and a 50" 768p plasma.

WTLV/NBC - Notre Dame/Stanford
PQ overall was the sharpest, however some swimming grass. Some very minor pixelation on fast-moving low camera angles.

WJXX/ABC - Oklahoma/Texas
Picture was soft, especially on high camera angles. No swimming grass. No pixelation.

WTEV/CBS - Florida/LSU
Picture was sharp on stationary high camera angles. No swimming grass. Major pixelation on low camera angles, even when camera was barely moving. Some blurriness or out-of-focus camera on faster-moving high camera angles.

Overall, this is similar to what I've seen previously. WTEV/CBS just cannot handle any camera movement from the low field cameras.

some swimming grass.

I've never heard the term "swimming grass" in relation to TV picture quality. What does that mean?

It was very irritating AGAIN to watch the Gator game with the extensive pixelization. If WTEV/CBS could correct this issue, their PQ would be right at the top. Not sure if today's Jag game will be in HD, but if it is, I guess we'll have to put up with more of the same PQ.

Sometimes it's called shimmering or sparkling grass. It appears the grass is moving or waving, especially on "long" shots. It's especially prevalent on ESPN.

Yes, you'll get to experience the Jags game in all it's pixelated glory! At least it beats the alternative of watching in SD. I'll be watching from the SW corner of Alltel stadium.

In contrast to WTEV/CBS HD, there was no pixelization during today's Giants/Redskins game on WAWS/Fox HD.
