jerry birdwell 01-24-08, 06:37 PM I really need help in solving the captions problem for the LIL for WLOS and WHNS over DirecTV during primetime network originations and non-sports. Please check the captions for these two stations between 8 and 10 p.m. for garbled results, especially using either an HR20 or HR21.
I have the attention of the Denver engineering staff, but they claim that they have monitored the LIL feeds for FOX and ABC and did not find problems with captions. How they monitored the LIL spot feed into this area they could not explain.
(Reminder, WYFF and WSPA, the 1080I feeds, are ok.)
Thanks
blooker 01-27-08, 06:22 PM The PGA at Torrey Pines looked great in HD. Made spending all the money for this stuff worth it.
calvinb 01-30-08, 07:01 AM questions for our Charter users: I know Charter is phasing out the older Motorola Moxi STB with a newer Motorola unit. Does it have an active HDMI output? Are the Charter techs hooking it up via HDMI or component? Overall, how is the new unit? Also, anyone using a TiVo 3 with Charter in the upstate? I'm considering a switch away from DBS. Thanks for any feedback.
Adam Tyner 01-30-08, 09:32 AM I'm also interested in hearing more about the Motorola box. My Moxi seems like it's on the brink of keeling over, and I'm curious what my options are.
Goober96 01-30-08, 10:44 AM I have the Tivo Series 3 with Charter and love it. Tivo is far superior to anything you can get from Charter or DBS.
calvinb 01-30-08, 02:40 PM Did some research on the "new" Motorola's. Looks like Models 6208 (single tuner) and 6412 (dual tuner) are the current options. Still no HDMI. DVI only - active? Who knows? Wonder what Charter plan you'd have to sign up for to get the HD content? I'm thinking TiVo 3 and a cable card would be the way to go (no DVR fee to Charter). Goob96, you using a cablecard?
GVLSandlapper 01-30-08, 02:47 PM I have a TivoHD and also have to admit I absolutely love it. I've been a Tivo user for years but when I went HD I got a Moxi box from Charter and hated it. When Tivo finally released the much cheaper Tivo HD I jumped on it quick.
IfixitBIG 01-31-08, 08:56 AM Has anyone been watching Fox HD on Charter this week? I was wondering how it looked? Any more of those problems from a couple of weeks ago?
rrainwater 01-31-08, 10:37 AM Has anyone been watching Fox HD on Charter this week? I was wondering how it looked? Any more of those problems from a couple of weeks ago?
No problems for House or American Idol this week. However, the big test will be the Super Bowl on Sunday. There have been times where everything was great all week, but NFL games would still have issues.
Raycom is doing their first HD ACC game of the season tonight. Their press release indicated that WLOS was equipped to handle the game in HD, but it seems WLOS will be carrying the 'Lost' premiere instead and WMYA will be carrying the game. Unfortunately I'm out of town, so I'll be relying on ESPN2-HD anyway, but can someone take a look tonight and see if WMYA carries the game in HD? Starts at 9...

calvinb 01-31-08, 07:46 PM I'll keep an eye out Cruxer. I'm assuming it'll be OTA... no D* for WMYA-DT?
popweaverhdtv 01-31-08, 08:12 PM Has anyone been watching Fox HD on Charter this week? I was wondering how it looked? Any more of those problems from a couple of weeks ago?
None of the issues that I saw a couple of weeks ago have resurfaced on Fox HD via Charter.
I'll keep an eye out Cruxer. I'm assuming it'll be OTA... no D* for WMYA-DT?
Nope, just the analog channel. Thanks, calvinb.
calvinb 01-31-08, 09:26 PM Bad news for us, no HD hoops on WMYA-DT. The picture looks good but its got the sidebars. Should we assume someone at WMYA is asleep at the station and has not "flipped the switch"? Anyone getting Duke/St in HD (not ESPN2 HD)?
Oh well, technically they promised HD on WLOS, not WMYA. I guess there's always hope for the next game.
rrainwater 01-31-08, 11:11 PM Oh well, technically they promised HD on WLOS, not WMYA. I guess there's always hope for the next game.
I don't think there is any technical reason why they couldn't have carried it on WMYADT. My guess is they either weren't ready, or just weren't aware of how to carry the HD feed.

And this is based on what? Gut feeling?
My guess is they either weren't ready, or just weren't aware of how to carry the HD feed.
The bold part is correct. I clicked in here thinking I was in the North Carolina topic. The reason was a bad communication from Raycom, and if the station didn't "guess" the right symbols, they didn't get HD out. 29.27 was the right symbol.
Still getting dropped frames on ABC-HD from DirecTv HR20. Noticed it during Lost.
rrainwater 02-01-08, 01:10 PM And this is based on what? Gut feeling?
The two stations obviously share a lot of the same resources. They carry the WLOS news on WMYA everyday and they are already able to show HD content. Why would they not be able to show the HD feed if WLOS can? It isn't like they are two separate entities.

Technically they are. It takes two complete setups for two separately run stations even if they are in the same building and share resources.

Yes, I am sure they aren't using the same hardware. My point is it appears WMYADT is fully capable of handling HD content and they have been carrying Raycom sports content for a while now.
popweaverhdtv 02-03-08, 05:46 PM Just noticed that GAC (Great American Country) has recently been added to Charter's Digital Tier in AVL (channel 141). This is in addition to the recent changes of GSN going from analog to digital (ch. 76) and Telemundo's move from ch. 61 (analog) to ch. 228 (digital). No new HD channel additions to report except for when I signed up yesterday for HBO/Cinemax and Showtime/TMC to make my monthly cable bill cheaper (go figure).

Question to you or Goober96
It was my understanding that for the TiVo that even with a Charter cable card it does not allow ESPN or ESPN2 & thus you must go with a UHF antenna and get those stations OTA.
Is this correct? What are the limitations of the cable card over the Moxi? I am happy enough with the Moxi (though not as complete as my Replay Tvs or Tivos I guess), but I want to prepare for the day when the Moxi dies & can't be replaced.
Thanks

As stated you can't get ESPN OTA, but I'm happy to report they come in just fine using a cablecard in a Tivo. You can get every channel you get currently get on your Moxi using a cablecard, but you can't get features such as PPV or OnDemand.
As for the advantages, its really a personal thing. I personally like the Tivo software a lot better than say the Moxi, therefore I choose to use a Tivo.
popweaverhdtv 02-04-08, 03:39 PM Just a "heads up"....There's currently an issue with Charter Customers in the Western NC/Upstate SC Systems with accessing the Premium Channels (HBO/Cinemax, Showtime/TMC) On Demand (ch. 999). This is according to the Service Tech who tried to resolve this issue with my cable box this afternoon. This affects Charter Customers in the area who subscribe to these services. For me, the issue had been happening since Saturday (at least). There was no time frame for when the issue would be resolved. However, they're at least recently been made aware of the issue. Hope this helps some of you...
BTW, I scored a new HD box with HDMI output for my trouble since that was initially thought to have been the issue.

Looks like tonight's Duke (let's go DEVILS)/UNC game has been relegated to WMYA-DT tonight. Let's keep our fingers crossed that they manage to pass the HD feed from Raycom.
-c
I sent this to the ACC the other day. I also contacted WLOS and Charter but I did not hear anything from them.
There is a little basketball game on
2/9/08. Duke vs UNC. It seems that it
is to be on WMYA Wednesday night. Even
if they manage to show Raycom's HD
feed, which they did not do on their
first HD game of the season, will it
be seen in HD in Asheville? No. WMYA
is not available OTA (WLOS's
subchannel does not count) Charter, Dish
Network & DirecTV do not carry WMYA-HD.
It is quite unfortunate that the WNC area
will not get to see this game in HD.
In the past the first day of the ACC
tournament has been carried on WMYA.
If that stays the same, WNC will miss
that also. In the future, please see
if your television contracts can
ensure HD coverage in the ACC
footprint. As it is now, WNC does not
get any HD coverage from Raycom even
though we are in the
Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville
market.
The ACC responded with:
You may wish to contact your local cable company and local affiliates
directly to express your concern over their choice of affiliates for the
game (WLOS vs. WMYA).
I have copied your feedback to the Raycom Sports Staff.
Thank you for your support of the Atlantic Coast Conference and its 12
member institutions.
tommyp007 02-06-08, 10:15 AM So the UNC/Duke game will be a blackout on ESPNHD tonight?
Yep. Raycom broadcast takes precedence in our area. ESPN will have the Texas Tech/Baylor game, probably in SD since it's really an ESPNU broadcast.

rrainwater 02-06-08, 04:33 PM I sent this to the ACC the other day. I also contacted WLOS and Charter but I did not hear anything from them.
It seems the only issue you have is with Charter. WMYA can't make their station work for you OTA because of where you live. The only solution for you is if Charter carried the WMYADT channel on their lineup. Right now they do not carry that station on any of their systems.
Btw, it is all for nothing if WMYA isn't going to show the Raycom HD events in HD anyways. I will be recording the WMYADT OTA broadcast tonight in hopes it is in HD, but I have my doubts.
popweaverhdtv 02-06-08, 04:53 PM Here's the post that I submitted in May '07 which has the response from Charter when I asked them about adding WMYA-DT shortly after they added WLOS-DT:

True.
I did not hear from Charter either, but I do understand them leaving WMYA out of the HD lineup. E* & D* seem to agree with Charter. Other than ACC sports, I do not think that I watch anything else on that station. I asked others that I know and not one of them ever watch anything else on them either.
So, I will blame WLOS for showing Supernanny & Cashmere Mafia instead of a little basketball game.;)
GVLSandlapper 02-06-08, 09:09 PM Ugh! I came here to complain about the game not being on ESPN when I see that the issue has already been brought up. :(
GVLSandlapper 02-06-08, 09:10 PM Just a heads up, my Tivo alerted me that Charter 798 is now FoxSportsSouthHD. I tuned to the channel earlier and it was still the test pattern, but hopefully it will switch over soon.

The channel only shows a few things in HD so other than that, there is not any 24 hour programming. Hopefully, this does mean they will start getting the guide data for the few things they do show.
rrainwater 02-06-08, 09:17 PM The game on WMYADT was not in HD tonight. It is a shame they can't make it work.
So, did WMYA do the HD basketball thing? Without announcers ;)
I see from above that I am not missing anything.
You know this is just ridiculous that Wlos/Wmya keeps taking this basketball games away from ESPN HD making us watch in non-HD. They must be getting many calls because I just called and they lady answering the phone basically hung up on me!

That is the deal with the ACC and Raycom. You can't blame WLOS as they aren't taking the game away themselves. ESPN is required to black the game out in ACC markets. It's just a shame WLOS/WMYA can't show the game in HD. Now, I am always hoping they aren't showing a game so I have a better chance of seeing it in HD.

Earlier you blamed them for taking games away from ESPN. That isn't the case. The ACC does that when they schedule these games on Raycom. Whether it was on WLOS/WMYA or another station, ESPN would still have to black the game out due to the agreement in place. This is the first year they have done HD on Raycom/ACC except for one test game last year. Not all affiliates even support rebroadcasting the games in HD. So until we know why WMYA doesn't, there is no need getting this upset.

If Charter said, "hey, we'll give you everything we have for $40/month", I would laugh at them.

IfixitBIG 02-11-08, 09:27 PM Networks like ABC give stations a couple of preemptions through a season. It used to be two. That means you can preempt two nights of network programing for local shows.
Some stations used to take that time and run what was called "Make good theater". You give clients make-goods in prime time. Programming doesn't matter... you are getting a spot in prime-time!
It is a tough call on the ACC tournament... Thursday night is a big network night. With ABC showing new episodes of "Lost" while CSI is in repeats on Thursday nights, I bet WLOS will not be able to preempt that. That is just a guess... the broadcasting world has changed alot since I left 5 years ago.

calvinb 02-13-08, 09:58 AM I must say, our friend Jack Connors at WLOS has good customer service on his mind. I e-mailed him this morning about the ACC hoops HD issue and he responded, in LESS than 90 minutes. Here's his reply:
Dear Mr. X,
As you are probably aware, WLOS and WMYA have been broadcasting ABC and
MyNetwork network programs in high definition for years. There has been
very little syndicated programming---shows that we contract for and
purchase from individual program suppliers and studios---produced in HD
up to this time. The technology to capture and playback any show in
high definition is very different from what is called "pass through"
HD. "Pass through" high definition is fed to stations around the
country, and we simply receive it in a dish and insert it in real time
into our program stream and ship it to our transmitters.
We have installation specialists working six days a week right now to
completely re-wire virtually our entire studio and control rooms to
allow us to record and play-back HD from sources outside of ABC and
MyNetwork. Because so many stations around the country are doing this
same thing at the same time, and because there are very few contractors
who can handle this kind of enormous task, every station has to wait in
line for our "turn." (It's not unlike what you and I have to do in our
house if we're trying to get a plumber or electrician to show up.) The
contractors were late in getting to Asheville because, as is so often
the case with any complex project, some market in front of us had some
problems that nobody expected. Once we get this installation completed
we will be able to receive and play back HD feeds from sources outside
of our networks.
Our objective when we purchased the studio HD equipment last year has
always been to get some or all of the ACC tournament on in high
definition. The March 13-16 tournament dates remain target number one.
Sincerely,

GVLSandlapper 02-13-08, 10:25 AM Definitely an A+ to Mr. Connors.
I'm assuming once that equipment is in place we'll be getting Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy in HD too! :D
calvinb 02-13-08, 01:10 PM here's another e-mail from Mr. Connors after I descibed myself as "a lonely consumer / HD enthusiast". This guy gets it; and wow what a difference from the old Sinclair days when many of us struggled to get the WLOS-DT signal. Anybody else remember the old Samsung STB 720p glitch?
quote:
"Mr. X,
We don't have any /"lonely consumers / HD enthusiasts." / We have only
important customers who look to us for programming that makes their
considerable investment in high definition equipment as enjoyable and
satisfying as possible.
Our commitment to viewers in the Upstate and WNC for ACC coverage this
year is the largest we've ever had. We used to carry between 20-22 games
a season. This year we're carrying 39, plus whatever additional ACC
games we can air as part of ABC's extensive weekend commitment to
college basketball.
I wish I could wave a magic wand and have over a million dollars worth
of digital/HD gear march into line, but this is pretty close to starting
from square one to build a new technical plant for two television
stations. Our vendor-installers are on the case about 9-10 hours a day,
and they know that if at all possible, the ACC tournament is the
objective to hit. "

thesquidman2 02-13-08, 02:48 PM I agree. I e-mailed him about WLOS and WYMA HD on Northland cable. He replied very promptly to my e-mail was explained everything. Apparently, Northland agreed on a contract agreement in November. Mr. Connors said that Northland should be able to have WLOS-HD on our lineup at any time. This really upsets me because I have contacted northland many times about this. I plan on contacting them soon. This is a bunch of bs from a monopoly cable company out here.
Kudos to Mr. Connors for giving us an answer. It's just good to get an update as to where we are! Hopefully they'll be able to hit the target. I guess the next question would be what are Raycom's plans for football in the fall!

Raycom is only showing 4 ACC games in HD during the regular season. The rest of the Raycom ACC games are all in SD. And if you read the previous page you will see that WLOS/WMYA is working to get HD working for Raycom sports in time for the ACC tournament.
jerry birdwell 02-15-08, 07:16 PM Ten months ago I pointed out to DirecTV, WLOS and WHNS that their captions were bad on the primetime LIL HD feed into this market. The response was basically indifference on the part of WLOS, bewilderment on the part of WHNS and denial on the part of DirecTV. After numerous phone calls, there seems to be progress. This week the DirecTV field engineer for this area has been in Greenville to upgrade the software on the encoders and the Sencore Receivers for the local feed to DirecTV.
It appears that this has corrected the captions problems for these two stations' rebroadcast into the market. The other stations (both 1080I) never had the problem!
However, I once jumped the gun and reported the problem was corrected by observing live Network sports events, which never had bad captions. So, I cautiously report that after two nights of watching, the captions have, for the most part, been good. Only network national commercials have some garbled captions during my monitoring.
popweaverhdtv 02-16-08, 11:32 PM Anyone notice on WSPA-DT that the screen flickers about every 10-15 seconds? This occurs in both HD and SD programs and was very noticable tonight during Jericho and the 11 p.m. newscast (what I was watching on there tonight).

UVa Wahoo in WNC 02-17-08, 08:10 PM Thank you to all on this board that mentioned channel 798 possibly being used for Fox Sports Network in HD.
I was watching tonight's game in SD & remembered to check 798 and sure enough HD!!!!!
The Moxi still calls it BRVHD, but I don't care what it is called as long as they are showing FSNHD, even if only on Sunday Nights for ACC Basketball.
I can't believe I am saying this, but thanks Charter.

I'm happy for any D* or E* customers who may have more choices, but frankly all that matters to me is what I get ;)
calvinb 02-24-08, 02:30 PM Interesting move by WSPA-dt today. We are getting the HD feed of Syr/ND on 7-1. SD Bama-Auburn on D* channel 7. Wonder why?
arwalke 02-24-08, 05:52 PM WSPA may have forgotten to change the feeds...I've seen this happen several times on WLOS when a regional game was only available in SD, the SD channel had the game, while the digital channel was carrying a national HD game (this happened during the Clemson-Maryland game last year). They would normally correct it within a few minutes.
It may be the same thing at WSPA?
popweaverhdtv 02-24-08, 06:00 PM FSN-HD on Charter 798 has the ACC Games on.....finally.....no more black screen! Maybe the HD fairies at Charter will grant us a full time FSN HD channel and other HD.
Re:WSPA SD vs. HD game coverage, this has been a practice on CBS' part, not WSPA. This was very evident during last year's NCAA Tournament when the game aired on the SD channel wasn't necessarily the same as the one aired on the HD feed. Even during WSPA's local commericals on the SD, the HD feed would be airing a tournament game in progress.

For total clarity, the network is responsibile for net regional switching and the local folks follow the clock. Only when a high interest events are missed that result in loud local voices do calls go out to the net that a mistake has been made.

boggaf05 02-28-08, 11:49 AM Yeah, that is what they do at home when the 4:3 content is being shown. Which is fine. I do agree though that it just looks awful when stretched
I think  that they may go all HD when they switch their local newscasts, including HD for their live remotes. The only reason I think this may be the case is a few months ago while looking through their job listings they were looking for someone with experience with Sony XD Cams, which are portable full HD Cams, which are desingned for ENG applications because of their quick in camera editing capabilities, but the capability to do live remotes in HD is much more costly than editing then playing back recorded material in HD. Maybe one of the WYFF engineers will give us some insight.
douglasd5 02-28-08, 12:15 PM Sony XDCams are not necessarily HD. WYFF uses XDCams in the field but they are standard definition. Sony does have an HD XDCam, but without more information you can't conclude the XDCam is HD. The SD XDCam is 16x9 capable.
boggaf05 02-28-08, 01:22 PM O, I guess I was thinking about the newer XDCAMs, but it is wishful thinking, I really didn't loook for SD XDCAMs since all I was shopping for at the time was HD cameras, which we utimately decided to go with HDV due to costs ($35,000 and up for XDCAMs ) Any word on when the newscasts will go to HD?

stoner99 02-29-08, 09:39 AM I called wyff4 today and spoke with mr. welsh ( i think that was his name) in the engineering department. he said the wyff4 is owned by a parent company in new york and they also own other local news channels in chicago, cincinatti, new york, and a few more larger viewing areas. of course stations will be getting the hd capabilities before we do because of the larger markets. he said it will not be this year but probably the begining of 2009 before they go hd. so with that being siad he did say that they will be fullly hd supported and there will be no streching! so at least we have something to look foward to, i guess.

Requieme 02-29-08, 03:30 PM Hi everybody,
There's a very good chance that I'll be moving to Asheville this summer and just curious if anyone could give me a really quick idea of what OTA HD I might be able to pull in there? I've tried searching this thread, but it is so big that it is hard to find that info. Antennaweb result weren't too promising. Also, will I absolutely need a rooftop antenna or will I be able to get anything with my trusty Silver Sensor? (I know it depends on the topography of our location, etc. ) Just curious...
Thanks for your responses!

Hi Ben,
The best channels for HD in the Asheville area are WLOS (ABC), WHNS (FOX) and WUNF (PBS). Most of the stations' towers are South and West of Asheville. Even then, you're going to encounter serious issues with singal bouncing, topography, etc. Your best bet is going to be getting D* or Cable Service (i.e. Charter or Mediacom). Unfortunately, topography isn't our friend when it comes to OTA HD. Others might be able to give a more positive response from their respective locations around Asheville. Hope this helps!

figgynewton 03-01-08, 08:48 PM Has anyone noticed any changes with WHNS' OTA HD feed? I use my computer as a DVR and as of the beginning of the week I've been unable to tune that channel on the computer (works fine on my TVs with built in OTA/HD tuners). I've done a bit of research and it looks like the reason this happens is that the channel (WHNS) is not broadcasting in a "compliant" fashion.
Anyone see anything different with WHNS compared to a week ago?
Thanks.

Requieme 03-03-08, 01:13 AM Hey pop,
That helps a lot. Thanks! Sounds like I will have to see what I can get with QAM on Mediacom or Charter. Mediacom in Iowa still has the networks in the clear, hopefully that is the same everywhere. Thanks again!
Ben
FYI, to convert a studio to HD is not a cheap proposition but a several million dollar project. You have to install the HD infrastructure before you can send the first HD picture. Most stations are replacing older equipment with HD compatable equipment when it is time so to keep the cost manageable. When WRAL in Raleigh went completely HD news in 2001, it was pegged as a 10 million dollar change out and that was after the HD infrastructure was in place.
Luckily the price of a lot of this equipment has come down, but it still isn't cheap. Most stations are looking at at least 3 to 5 million dollars to do HD news.
jerry birdwell 03-05-08, 01:16 PM The southside of many mountain areas here in Asheville can provide awsome off-air HD. For the past six years I have been able to receive each station in the market as it started the HD transmission, and they range from 15 to 85 miles away. I do not receive usable VHF analog signals from several of the stations! My elevation is 3300'. All are very reliable. All are UHF (for now) except for the Greenville SC PBS station operating on Ch 9. The start of this forum's thread details the stations in the market. So, the bottom line is you must be selective in looking for a location that provides reliable DT reception. I use a 4-bay CM antenna, with a home made CH9 yagi to insert the Greenville PBS signal; both on the same mast.
Good luck.
popweaverhdtv 03-09-08, 03:40 PM If anyone's checked the TV Listings, it looks like the Thursday/Friday Afternoon First Round and Quarterfinal Games of the ACC Tournament will be aired on WLOS while the Evening games of these rounds will be aired on WMYA. The Semifinal and Championship games are listed to air on WLOS on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. I wonder how this will affect airing the games in HD on the two stations (if they're aired in HD at all) as I doubt Charter would have a change of heart and add WMYA's HD to their lineup just for this purpose.

RE:WHNS OTA feed not working in Vista Media Center after EPG update 3-1-2008
I wanted to tell you that I had the same problem. I fixed it by removing the WHNS line in my ATSCchannels.xml file. Then, I added the DT channel for WHNS-DT 1 in Media Center and it came back. You see, VMC gets it's info for a digital station not from the signal, but from the EPG. Basically, you'll find that the EPG told VMC that WHNS was now on channel 21 (not until '09) instead of 57. When you add the digital channel, use 21 -1 for your first entry and choose 57 in the second. That worked for me. If you still have problems, let me know.

Good luck, but I wouldn't hold my breath at all about them carrying WLOS...probably better off headed somewhere else to watch the game.

Yeah, thanks. It is just rediculous that I have called numerous times in the past 2 months trying to ask them about TNT-HD and WLOS-HD. It is absurd that I can't even talk to someone at the corporate office. I have called there many times as well. And someone was supposed to call me back, but it never happened. WLOS has been testing their syndicated feed (a.k.a the ACC HD Stream) on their HD (13.1) this afternoon (during Maury). While watching Maury, the boards for UNC and Duke were displayed in HD with accompanying background music (maybe thinking that's going to be the Championship Game on Sunday)? Looked great from this end. Anyone else notice the testing?

See http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=13345087&postcount=4864 re:WMYA ACC HD Games. WLOS/WMYA GM Jack Connors also said the following re:WMYA's HD when I e-mailed him on Tuesday (3/10) about the ACC HD:
"We will not be able to carry the tournament games this year in HD on WMYA, but that high definition capability hopefully will be up and on line before the end of March.
On the question of Charter and HD carriage of WMYA----they (a.k.a. Charter) won't be able to carry non-network signals in high def until we are able to broadcast it. Once that happens, I trust that they will re-transmit WMYA in HD for everything that we carry in HD."
(Note: I added the 'a.k.a. Charter' to make it clear who he meant by 'they'.)
Ditto on previous comments on ACC HD. Too bad it isn't in DD5.1 like someone previously pointed out (not even coming through the L/R Rear Speakers). Also, I haven't seen an HD commercial during the Tourney, yet (only widescreen with black bars on top and bottom). Anyone else see any HD Commercials?

SNF Mixer who does the audio said there were too many audio issues trying to do DD 5.1 in the few games they did this year in HD. I think he wants to keep his job or something :) Apparently, they will try to work it out for next year though. Obviously, this has nothing to do with WLOS.

Correct, but WLOS is transmitting the DD5.1 flag (at least on my receiver) when the audio is actually DD2.0. This prevents our receivers from processing the surround signal into faux 5.1 and results in hearing the announcers in the front L/R speakers.
All-in-all, though, that's a very small gripe compared to my very large satisfaction in getting the HD picture.

All stations transmit the 5.1 flag whether they transmit 5.1 or 2.0. That is part of the protocol.

It seems, then, that my receiver is misinterpreting the signal. Typically it will show 2.0 for a Dolby Surround signal and 5.1 EX for a DD5.1 signal. Now with WLOS, it shows 5.1 EX all the time. It seems to work fine for the other local networks. Any ideas on how I could fix this? Is anyone else experiencing the same thing?

Stations transmit 5.1 all the time. You can have Surround that is transported within the 5.1 and it works the same way as Surround in the analog world. If you have a decoder that shows if Surround is being received along with 5.1, it will display those flags if the station is transmitting in that mode (most encoders will allow that if set to it). If a station doesn't have a 5.1 encoder to create the 6 channels and is not operating in Surround mode, then left will show up on left and right will show up on right with no center, no rears and no bass and only the 5.1 flag will show.
I have my station set to use Surround in local mode since we do not have a 5.1 encoder and since FOX provides us with a true 5.1, when we splice into the network, the Surround flag is replaced with the 5.1 and true 5.1.
That is how it works.
dashaund 03-14-08, 06:00 PM Anybody have any idea when the Greenville PBS station will move to UHF instead of Channel 9 on VHF? I know the analog cutoff date is next year, and from what I understand they will eventually sell the VHF spectrum.
The only reason I could think of is the PBS unused spectrum is what the state is looking at for the wireless broadband across the state.

WNTV is staying on channel 9 as their permanent DTV channel. The VHF spectrum is not for sale. The spectrum for sale is channels 52 and higher. WSPA will go back to 7 for digital and WLOS will go back to 13 for the permanent DTV channel. WHNS will go back to 21 and WYFF will be going to channel 36. Those staying on their current DTV channel are WMYA 14, WASV 45. Oh, and WGGS will return to 16 for digital after the transition.
cpalmer2k 03-15-08, 01:33 PM apparently WLOS has fell asleep at the switch today, no ACC in HD here :-(
Back and forth in HD for me. SD when they do the weather crawl. Via D*.
popweaverhdtv 03-15-08, 05:05 PM ACC on WLOS is in HD via Charter...Like Apps1 said, they probably temporarily switched to SD for the weather crawls (live updates, as well). I believe the weather crawl was in HD, but in stretch-o-vision (actual ACC Feed remaining in HD).
popweaverhdtv 03-15-08, 05:22 PM Here's a Charter HD Survey that was listed on the 'St. Louis, MO - Charter' Forum:

Granted, it appears to be catered towards the St. Louis area. Nevertheless, it gives a sense of where they're heading in terms of more HD.

I can't speak about WNTV, but the VHF WILL NOT be sold off. Channels 52-69 are being sold off as we speak. On Feb 18, 2009 TV will go from channel 2-51.

Eventually, they were showing the weather crawl in HD so it seems they figured that out in the second game (it covered the screen instead of moving the picture so it did cover the game graphics, but that might be their only option). The only time it was switching to SD in the second game was when they were getting ready to go to the studio for a weather update and it would stay SD until the update was over.
cpalmer2k 03-16-08, 11:12 AM yes at least they're getting better at that.. now if they remember how to put the station ID on in HD instead of flipping to do that we might really have progress
I was lucky to be given a ticket for Saturday ... beats HD! On the backboard supports, there was MUCH electronics. It appeared there was a cluster of either devices about a foot behind the glass as well as other things clamped to the support over pretty well the entire length.
My son and I were guessing at still camera flash receivers, microphones, and repeaters. We nerds are curious ... any ideas here?

Following along this same note, I just noticed on the SEC Championship on CBS via ESPN2HD is in DD5.1. At the same time, you go and check the Big Ten Championship on WSPA and it isn't DD5.1. Interesting...I wonder if this is of WSPA's choosing or at CBS' level.
Added at 7 p.m.: The NCAA Final Four Selection Show was in DD5.1.

Yeah, I've noticed this on occasion during Syndicated Programming on WHNS-DT. Could it possibly be some digital encoding that comes with some of these particular shows when its received via satellite by the station? I don't notice this all of the time; it only occurs during certain Syndie Progs.
Last night I noticed that when I tune my D* HR10-250 to OTA channel 21-1 there is no picture -also, no message about "no signal". The signal meter is solid in the high 90's. The guide data is there and current for that channel. No problems with other local OTAs on this receiver. Also, no problems with SD or HD channel 21 on my D* HR20. I've tried several reboots and resets of local OTA scans.
Any thoughts?

G4 is broadcast on digital 81 for me. They removed it from analog several months ago.
I got this answer to my question above from the TIVO forums from WHNS via another user with same problem:
Equipment malfunction with the PSIP generator caused your
problem. The signal was on channel 57 last night as always. The PSIP
generator is a computer that instructs your HDTV turner to look for our
signal on channel 21.
If you desire more information on other functions of a PSIP
generator, Google PSIP on the internet and there are numerous web sites.
Our signal should be okay now.

popweaverhdtv 03-20-08, 09:46 PM Well, either ABC or WLOS really had a big goof with the audio being lost halfway through LOST. At least the closed captioning is working and WLOS placed a crawl along the bottom of the screen alerting viewers of the technical difficulty.
Update at 9:51 p.m.:
Apparently, it's only affecting the SD side of things. The HD audio resumed when the crawl was taken away and the video switched back to HD.
Update at 9:55 p.m.:
It is not an issue with ABC as WLOS claims in the crawl...the NEWS 13's Station ID (in SD) didn't have audio, either.

Anybody having sounds issues on wlos digital sub channels 13-2 and 13-3?
A few weeks ago my son and I were watching a movie on 13-2 went to a commercial and when the movie resumed the sound was/still is very spotty; sound for a split second then nothing for a few seconds. 13-1 is not having this issue.
Of all the channels I receive sub channels 13-2 and 13-3 are the only ones having sound issues.
Would love to send Jack Conners, General Manager of wlos an email.

popweaverhdtv 03-23-08, 02:01 PM When inquiring about the ACC Tourney on WLOS a week or so ago, I was thinking about how our local stations were going to roll out more HD syndicated and local news content. That gave me the urge to send e-mails to each of the area stations (WYFF, WSPA/WYCW, WLOS/WMYA and WHNS) inquiring about such plans. Here's the result of my e-mail hunt presented in order of channel position:

{Response on 3/13/2008 from Michael Hayes (President/GM-WYFF)}:
Thank you for your email.
I don't have an exact date for HD news, but it is my hope it would be sooner rather than later. As for syndication, that would vary by program and by producer. I would think some may go as early as next season.
Although nothing has been announced.
Thanks.

{Response on 3/10/2008 from Jack Connors-WLOS/WMYA}:
We are working now on going to full studio HD for our local news. This is extraordinarily complex because all of our studio cameras as well as our entire news set have to be replaced at the same time. We will be making this transition but it will be early this summer before all of the work is done.
{Response on 3/13/2008 from Jack Connors-WLOS/WMYA}:
We will be able to carry Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy in HD later this spring, perhaps as soon as the end of April. To broadcast pre-recorded programs like Wheel and Jeopardy requires switching equipment that is ordered but that has not yet been shipped to our studio.
***************************
{Response on 3/13/2008 from Susan Hodgins-WHNS}:
Most syndicated product is not even available to us in HD at this point. To my knowledge, the only daily syndicated programs that are distributed in HD are Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Much of that will change this fall, but we have not had word from our distributors as of yet.
We are in the process of rebuilding our control room and internal capabilities, and will be 100% digital before February of 2009, but have not determined the exact date yet.
Of course, all Fox programming in HD is passed through as such. They even announced last week that all MLB games this year will be in HD, which begin on April 5th. It will be a bit longer for our non-network programming, but we are moving in that direction!
Thanks for your interest.

Well I have a similar situation. I lost 21-1 a week or two ago and immediately tried to find it on 57-1. But that didn't work either. Perhaps it is how my TV handles problems like this. I eventually rescanned the channels and it found 21-1 again, but then it lost it again after just aday or two. It still does not tune to 21-1 or 57-1 (or any sub channels). I guess I need to rescan it again.
It is probably my TV, because my SageTV set up has no problem tuning to 21-1 (which is why I haven't been to concerned about rescanning my TV channels yet).
The TV is a Sharp LC-47D64U LCD TV in case anyone is curious.

Only if we had that choice here in these Mountains...it would be nice to have a choice of affiliate for each of the broadcasting networks, but FCC overrules (unfortunately).
I'm glad others noticed the low sound on WSPA, I thought it was on my end, or perhaps DirecTv. It happened on big bang theory, old christine, 2.5 men, and whatever other show fits in there before the local news. The background music and laugh tracks were fine, just the dialogue was REALLY low.

We air the first two hours (7-9) of Today in HD which is live in the East. We do not carry the third hour of the Today Show East live feed (9am Regis & Kelly) and the hour we air at 10am is from the Central timezone feed which is in SD since NBC is not able to switch our HD receiver for the HD Central time zone feed.

Thank you Doug for your quickly and timely response. I did not realize that you show regis & Kelly for an hour. Adam Tyner 03-28-08, 10:18 PM That's odd -- it looks like Charter dumped all of their free HD VOD content. Yep, this looks to be the case all throughout Charter-land. Even the March Madness highlights are gone (in HD at least). I wonder if they're realizing that "HD Options" aren't what their customers want (we want more 24/7 HD Channels). That's wishful thinking, of course...

Similar situation on Saturday. The live show starts a 7am but we have local news at 7 so we air the central timezone feed on Saturday morning. NBC is upgrading their HD distribution this year so this limitation will be resolved when that occurs.

Not sure about that one...up here, we don't have CSS in HD; We only have FSN South HD and they're not even part-time.
Updated at 10:02 p.m.: I guess CSS only has a deal to air the game within a 3 hour window. After that goes by, CSS reverts back to their scheduled programming at 10 p.m. Bummer...

I wonder how many people have switched to WSPA-DT news in HD instead of WYFF-DT in SD, I know that I have since day 1, Connie LeGrand looks very grand in HD , as far as the babe factor goes WSPA beats WYFF by a mile. IMHO

I'm a regular LOS'er (no pun intended), but if I want a change of news scenery, I do catch myself watching SPA more than YFF. Althought, the things about SPA HD that I've tried to overlook are the Stretch-o-vision of their SD video and SD live shots and the issues with their motion graphics (i.e. choppy-like or hiccupping graphic news intro). Maybe YFF and LOS can learn from SPA's issues and ensure they don't have the same issues when they launch their HD News (whenever that may be).

Tonight it wasn't on either. The Tribune guide data even lists the Bobcats game but no luck. So much for this deal actually helping the TV situation.

There's a press release on the Bobcats' website that only states that Charter's Hickory Market is airing it (out of all of Charterland). Otherwise, it's either on Dish, D* or TWC.

It is strange that the guide data is listing it. I find it hard to believe they lost millions of dollars getting out of a TV deal that is now no better than it was before. Unfortunately it isn't clear who to contact to get the right information.
Goober96 04-10-08, 04:04 PM Does anyone know when, if ever, IPTV such as Verizon FiOS will be available in Anderson? Any word out there?
dashaund 04-11-08, 04:51 PM Well, for starters, as of right now, Charter and AT&T (Bellsouth) pretty much owns everything in the Upstate. The only place Verizon has any kind of foothold is in Simpsonville, where they have DSL service, and even that is a very small portion. I'm hoping that we can get some competition in this area, and let consumers choose. But, for now, doesn't look very good. If you're tired of Charter, DirecTV would be my recommendation. I've had them for going on 13 years, and haven't considered switching back to cable since I've had it. More for you money, and the customer service department is a no brainer. Charter customer service is a joke. I have them for internet (only because I don't have another option, DSL doesn't run out here). Talk about a nightmare...
I live in rural Spartanburg county and have PRTC out of Laurens and they offer 6 MB DSL and Digital SD TV over the phone line, they do the channel switching at the main office. They are planning on fiber for the whole system. Co-ops do have the advantage of being local people who have to use the same services, unlike the "big boys", I get CSR's who speak English with a "local" accent, not with an outsourced one.

I don't think we'll ever see Verizon FiOS around here because AT&T owns this market. I do believe they're doing something similar to FiOS in other areas so we can only hope they bring it here.

Same here in WNC. Verizon does have Weaverville within its local phone market. However, we don't have their DSL Servce. I'm unsure whether it would be a big enough market from them to introduce FiOS this way.

GVLSandlapper 04-13-08, 12:43 PM TWC would fit in nicely here because of our close proximity to their other cable systems. I have several friends who use them in the lower part of the state.

I have been told that the switching equipment Verizon uses in the Simpsonville area is very old and will not accommodate fiber. This means they would have to replace a lot of infrastructure which would be very expensive for an area this size.

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure Verizon doesn't actually have their own equipment in Simpsonville or anywhere else in the Upstate for that matter. I think they just resell DSL service in that area using AT&T's existing infrastructure, just like Netzero, Earthlink, AOL, etc. does.

Has any one heard anymore from the broadband service Duke Power was experimenting with? This would be great if we could get that in the Upstate. You are right we need some more competition to get better service at lower prices. I saw where last year Duke was testing in very limited markets.
blooker 04-18-08, 08:03 PM To date, the broadband services offered via power lines has resulted in massive interference to shortwave radio communications in violation of FCC regulations. It's doubtful this technology will be implemented for the time being.
blooker 04-18-08, 08:04 PM FWIW, DishNetwork added the SciFi channel and USA Network to the HD lineup today.
I thought it was working very well in Japan and Europe?
IP over power lines is the worse thing. It doesn't work as advertised, it has never worked as advertised and many different sources have documented how the FCC has turned a blind eye on all of the interference issues just to get SOMETHING to work and it is still a technology that doesn't work, but power companies want it to make more money.
Raleigh was one of the test markets and it was such a dismal failure they gave up on it after 18 months. It interfered with pretty much everything.
blooker 04-18-08, 09:49 PM In the U.S., it is common for a small transformer hung from a utility pole to service a single house or a small number of houses. In Europe, it is more common for a somewhat larger transformer to service 10 or 100 houses. For delivering power to customers, this difference in design makes little difference for power distribution. But for delivering BPL over the power grid in a typical U.S. city requires an order of magnitude more repeaters (aka noise generators) than in a comparable European city.

It aired on 798. I really hope they can figure out what they are going to do with 798. Is it a Braves channel or is it a Fox Sports HD channel? The guide says its a Fox Sports channel but there is never anything on it. None of the Braves games appear in the guide even if they do show on the channel. Its seems like a waste if they are going to add another dedicated channel to the Braves that will never have other content. Of all the things Charter could do to improve their HD service, this seems like such a waste unless they are going to actually make 772 the Braves HD channel and make 798 a real Fox sports HD channel.

Didn't air on 798 here last night since it was a Peachtree TV Game (was on CSS in SD). It would be nice if they'd make the channel something and stick with it...add SportSouth into the mix of names that 798 has been in the last couple of weeks. Unfortunately, neither FSN South HD nor SportSouth HD are full-time HD channels, so it's the channels' ownership that's making the choice of airing test patterns when no HD programming is airing.
Supposedly, Charter is going to add more HD within the next few months.
