View Full Version : Panasonic DVD players made region/macrovision free without physical mods (some)

Hi,

I know this method works with some Panasonic players. There are chances that this works with other players(then the units this mehtod is intended for) as well by simply making the password window appear by the following key presses (RP91 password window appearing confirmed by Bytehoven). **This also this requires that you obtain the Panasonic Service Disc #2 as well.

1)
* Assuming Panasonic Service Disc #2 is loaded

2)
- Using the remote press "SETUP" / "ACTION"
- Go to "DISPLAY" menu
- Select "ON SCREEN MESSAGES" then press "ENTER" button
- Press ">10" found on the bottom right coner
- Press "6" button
- Press "4" button
- Press "3" button
- Press "8" button

3)
A password window should appear.

- Password is 3192 (region free) and 3193 (macrovision free).
- Press enter twice.
- ** Disc will be read.

* The disc doesn't have to be present to be able to bring the password window up to find out if your player is possible to use this disc.

** If you don't have the disc, nothing will happen and the unit resets itself because some information needs to be read off it for the modifications to work.
ADD-ON: The unit will initialize itself (shows on display) and will reset back to factory defaults, so be prepared to set up your player again. This applies if the disc is there or not.

--
The way to obtain this disc is by contacting Panasonic Australia and email saying that you have an ***RV31 which cannot play overseas DVDs and you would like to obtain the Panasonic Service Disc #2.

*** What the Panasonic service disc is manufactured for will be will be sent for the following:
DVD: DVD-RV31, DVD-RV41, DVD-RA61, DVD-RA71 SC-DV280
Systems: SC-DK10, SC-HT70, SC-DV250, SC-DM3, SC-DT100

- Since that it works for RP56 (been confirmed by several RP-56 owners including myself since I used the disc on my unit), there is a good chance it will work on other players which can get the password window to appear. I'm also going to try it on my DVD-A470EN because the window also appears on it. The unit is region modified but it's manual region switching so I'm going to use the disc on it when I get to it the comming weekend.

The catch is that they will only ship to Australian address. I know that some people on the fourm are from Australia so if they can help you guys out for getting the disc, that'll be a great.

Hope this helps.

Can a copy of this service disc be made?
BN

Sango
11-09-03, 04:55 PM
The disc cannot be copied because there is an area on the disc which cannot be dublicated even thou if you copied the disc successfully. Attempting to do so anyway will result corruption of the firmware on the dvd player after the password confirmation when the disc is being read.
---

Add on: If you guys are putting passwords in without the disc (as a test) and confirming, the unit will "initialize" itself so factory default settings so you guys need to put the user settings back in again. But if you don't want your unit to initialize itself, simply just power off the unit and turn on again when the password window pops up.

I should have a service #2 disc headed my way in a few days. I will confirm if it works with the RP91.

The service disc is in the dvd-r authoring media format, so copies need to be authored or duplicated in the dvd-r authoring media format. NOT THE dvd-r general media format.

My source for the disc has dvd-r authoring duplication and he is charging $15 for a copy of the disc shipped. I will PM his email info to folks once I confirm the disc works and does not damage the RP91.

So, if you would like contact info for a copy of the Panasonic service disc, send me a PM and I PM you my source info.

cheers

RJ
...
PS... I tried the key codes to access the password on a Panasonic XP30 and they did not work. Maybe someone could try on a RP82. Still, there is a relatively inexpensive hardware hack ($75) for the XP30 from JVB Digital. It requires some soldering to chips on the mother board, but is easy enough.

Sango

Hi Bytehoven,

I had no luck brining up the password window for both of my DVD-RP82 units. It might not even have remote hack or there is a more updated firmware version which can allow the player to use the remote hack for the service disc.

Let me know how things work out when you recieve the disc. =)

BTW, if anyone have a digital camera and have an RP91, can you take a screen shot of the password window, post it on the web and provide a link? Note: The password window looks exactly like the ratings password window but the tab highlighted in the background is the "Display" instead of "Disc" <-- (it saids this for RP-56, varies on other units but the same idea).

--
If it does work on the RP91, then other owners can remove their physical mods and use the disc! =) I guess that would be better off!

I can bring up the password window by using the method described. At the top of the window, instead of "Ratings" as in the normal password window, it says "On-ScrRatingsssages". Looks kind of weird, but that's what it says.

As mentioned, entering a password (3193 in this case) and pressing enter does nothing and resets my player to default settings. I just change the defaults to my settings and the player is fine. If the disc was present, how would I know if the mod was successful?? Does it tell you after it completes?? Guess we'll find out after you try it. Let us know...

Without service disc, I have tried the above methods on Panny A310(1998 model) and XP30. Unfortunately, I failed to bring up the password screen. I will try the RP82 later tonight since my father is using the TV right now.

My RP82 should have the newest firmware available; it was updated with a service disk two months ago at the Panasonic service center.

H Yawny,

I guess the display tab varies on a different models but I would say the concept is the same the screen is not the typical "ratings" screen. When typing the code and confirming without the disc, the unit actaully attempts to read the disc, which it finds none and then initializes itself. If the disc is there, indication of completion is determined after the player stops reading the disc followed by initialization.

To test if it is successful (for 3193 - macrovision free). Before even modifying it. Hook your DVD player intentionally up to a VCR and play a movie which you know has macrovision and play it to make sure the disc you have has protection. Then, modify it. After the modification and set it up again play the same movie, and the macrovision should be gone.

For testing the regions, you need to have a disc other than a R1 on hand for that. I do have an R3 and played it on my RP-56 which didn't play before I modified it which it then played after.

I would say when modifying it, perform code 3192 first, then 3193 second.

Hope this helps

Hi Omikron,

Oh you're my neighbor!! I actaully am from Richmond (a Richmond-ee!) too. It sounds like the Richmond Panasonic Service Center must of did it for you. Funny thing is where my units are located. My Region 1 DVD-RP82 and Region 3 DVD-A470EN (modified region manual switching) is in Richmond. Also my Region 3(region free) DVD-RP-82 and (R1) DVD-RP-56(all free!) is in Bellevue, Washington where I am now.

Can you let me know which firmware you have on your 82? Hold pause+open on player, press 7 on remote. Last 3 numbers is your version.

My unit saids R1 - ver. 272, R3 - ver.299

Thanks

Sango:

Hi neighbor! Good to hear from you! I got my XP50 sitting in Seattle as well gathering dust. Where did you get your R3 RP-82? Hong Kong or Taiwan?

Yes, the Richmond Panasonic service did the update for me when I complained about coloration banding from the component outputs on certain DVDs. As it turned out, it was the problem of my particular model of Sony XBR250, which someone from this forum had posted a link to the fix. Three months when the coloration was persisting, I took the RP-82 to Panny service center for them to look at. On their TV, it seemed fine. The service guy told me RP-91 had a similar banding problem and was fixed with new firmware, so he just upgraded the RP-82 for me. I have to wait until my parents leave the living room before I can go and check on RP82. So please wait for about an hour.

Aren't you glad that our Canadian Panasonic warranty for DVD player is one-year, instead of 90 days like south of the border?

Sango
11-11-03, 02:24 AM
Hi Omikron,

My R3 DVD-RP82 unit I bought is from US (imported overseas, nots sure which place it came from). Panasonic US warrenty is 1 year parts /90 day labor. I think Panasonic Canada covers both parts and labor for a year as I recall?

p.s. Can I have your DVD-XP50 in Seattle? =) j/k!!!

Sango & Omikron,

I am also a fellow Richmond-ee. I own both an RP56 and RP91 and I'm very interested in making both region/macro free. How can I get in touch with you guys to get a copy or use the service disk???

Sango
11-11-03, 03:07 AM
FlyingDutchmen,

Well technically I'm out of reach on right now since I'm in the states studying at the University of Washington. I will be back Friday until Saturday night, so my timing is a bit tight. The real Panasonic Service Disc #2 is with me right now and I'll definately bring it along back to Richmond as I will modify the DVD-470EN which I also have to free the player from it's limitations.

BTW, what is your firmware version number for the DVD-RP56 and 91?

My RP-56 is the ver.056 - upgraded from 045 after repairs were made due to optical pickup and spindle motor going back which were replaced.

The contact, quite yet where to meet and stuff.

Sorry, I don't have a service disk. My RP-82 firmware was updated at Panasonic service center located in Richmond.

Sango:

I tried the RP-82 and no, it didn't work. The password menu didn't appear.

My RP-82 was originally made in June 2002
Updated RP-82 firmware # L02665D300
So I guess it's version is 300

Hi!

Wow!, 300, I definately want that one or even a higher one(if it's out there)! When you updated the firmware, did they do it for free? I'm wondering if I can actaully obtain the firmware disc.

Firmware update was done for free - still under warrenty. If I remember correctly, it was done in mid-August, on the same day I went to Seattle.

You have the Motorola digital cable box, right? Did you purchase it or rent it from Shaw? If you are renting it from Shaw, you can exchange for a newer model DCT2000, which is faster and smaller than yours.

Hey Omikron,

With the new box, we can get HDTV channels right (unless Shaw didn't give us ability yet? Also I believe this one has component out?

Thanks

Note: about my R3 unit RP-82, the full model of it is the DVD-RP82GCSS. Sort of differnet than th R1, DVD-RP82S.

Sango:

No, the new digital cable box DCT2000 is only the upgrade of older one DCT1000 or DCT1500. There is no HD capability. It has faster TV schedule menu and conversion of analog TV signal to digital (now channel 59 and lower have digital sound). The CPU is faster with more cache memory.

The HD cable box you are thinking is DCT5100 HD, which is $698.88.

The R3 RP-82 doesn't have black level control, right?

Sango
11-12-03, 01:30 PM
Hi Omikron,

Yes my R3 DVD-RP82 doesn't have the black level option but apparently it is ouputting at 0 IRE which is fine with me. I also have the R1 DVD-RP82 black level set to darker which is also 0 IRE.

If you look in your RP-82 manual, you will notice a bit of differences in the meny options and capabilities (ie. the footnotes which say for Canada/US/Asia). I'm not sure if my unit can play WMA but not like I would use it anyway. Also my unit has 110-240 Volts 50-60hz Auto Switching.

BTW: How much does the DCT2000 cost? Also I'm curious about the analog to digital conversion for the channels below 60 because technically that would decrease the sound quality (analog(Shaw) -> digital(box) -> analog (box) unless you ment that Shaw sends the sound digitally now to the box box which decodes them to analog like channels 60 and above. Hmm would that also mean channels below 60 are digital on the video feed as well?

I thought there were some hardware differences between the R1 & R3 RP82s. I remember reading this about a year ago here. Does the R3 version have DCDi?

Sango
11-12-03, 03:05 PM
Hi mrwilson,

Good question - yes it does. I actaully opened up my R3 unit because the people who modified it when I obtained the unit didn't tighten the screws properly so there was like a bit of a gap which can allow the cover to move. I decided to check out the inside of an RP82 unit for the first time by opening the R3 unit since I didn't want to open my R1.

I checked out the video board and once I took it out, I clearly see the Sage/Faroudja video chip located on the underside of the board. I guess I didn't need to take the board out because when I hooked it up first, the video was just stunning and I knew this has to be Faroudja. After that just put everything back together and no gap this time.

DCT2000:
$198.88 purchase price minus programming credit of $159.88. Programming credit includes a monthly credit of $10.00 off the regular price of the Shaw Total Entertainment Bundle (TEB) or Shaw Total Home Bundle (THB) and 12 Pay Per View or Shaw On Demand credits of up to $4.99 each (maximum total of 12 credits is $59.88). Credits will be applied to first 12 orders placed up to a maximum value of $4.99 each. Customer must not disconnect from TEB or THB for 10 months to realize the total $100.00 credit. This offer cannot be combined with any other Digital offer from Shaw. This offer is only valid to first time subscribers to TEB or THB. Only one credit is to be applied to each Shaw account. Unused Pay Per View/Shaw On Demand Credits will expire 1 year after the Digital Terminal is initially activated. Other conditions may apply.

In the nutshell, it is $39 after programming credit, provided you are a first time subscriber to Shaw Digital. One way around it is to terminate your Shaw digital service (not the basic cable) for 2~3 months and reconnect again as new subscriber.

Regarding the audio analog to digital conversion for non-digital channels (ie. < 60), the older model will only output analog audio in those channels: my receiver won't output any sound unless it is manually switched to analog input. The new model will output audio from all channels via coaxial digital output, as well as analog output. However I do notice the sound volume level is decreased somewhat. The PQ is about the same. Personally, I do see on the newer model, there are more pixelations.

I won't advice to get a newer model since you have already paid in full for the older model, especially you are only at home during the weekend. You will only get faster TV guide surfing, all digital channels, faster remote response. If you have a HD TV, you might want to try their HD digital terminal by renting it. I don't know how much it cost; if it is only $10 a month then it worth a try.

Bummer, I was gonna buy another RP91 to do this too.

Is it an original Panasonic disc or a copy? If a copy it has to be on an 'authoring' dvd-r and not a 'general' dvd-r. Big difference.

Sango
02-17-04, 07:11 PM
The official copy Panasonic Service disc is made using the typical stamping process.

In this case, disc must be copied using an authorized burner and media because it's region information which cannot be copied using general purpose(it doesn't pick it up).

Attemping to do so using general purpose and attemping the unlock procedures to your unit, will make your player end up in the Panasonic Service Center for repair because your firmware essentially gets corrupted.

Imp66

The disc I used came directly from Panasonic Australia. I have a friend in Australia, so I emailed Panasonic and gave them his address. He then mailed it to me.

I'd like to hear from him/her about how they got it to work.

I mean, if there is something else to do except run the disk, I'd like to know. There are no new options in the menu or anything. Inserting a Region 2 disc gives me the same message as always.

Hi Imp66

The Service Disc should work with 2.59 firmware. Maybe you didn't preform it correctly, but there is instructions inside the cover since you have the official disc so you may want to check again. Also I heard firmware 2.59 isn't that good and one of the versions is better preferred - I don't recall but it's 2.50 or something like that, please correct me.

Hope this helps

SANGO:

Have you actually tried this? After entering the password, both my units go to a black screen, flash the screen a couple of times, then say "READ" on the player for a second, then it goes to the typical DVD screen and says STOP.

Is there anything else that should be happening?

Sango
02-17-04, 11:19 PM
Hi Imp66

Yes, I have done this before because I've done it to my RP-56 (I've mentioned in the starting post of the thread). The flashing black screen is normal. After it saids "STOP", the modifcation is complete.

Make sure you did the modification in the right order: 3192 then 3193.
If done incorrectly, you have to do it again in the right order because the macrovision will be on again because of the region modification being last.

alv
02-18-04, 07:41 AM
I just followed instructions - too less than one minute. As soon as I finished I tested for the wavy lines and they were gone. I don't have any non region 1 disks so I didn't try to see if that took but I assume it did. I have software version 250. I don't play MP3's so I didn't upgrade to 259.

Sango
02-18-04, 12:40 PM
Yeah it's 250 which I think is preferred by members so Imp66, you could reflash to that version and attempt the service disc and see how that goes.

alv - The region should be free now so there is no need to worry since I have R3 dvd and I tested it on my RP-56 to double check when I did my modification using the official disc. Glad to hear you already obtained the disc and modified it =).

Sango, since i have a denon 1600 i entered into the setup menu, and all i can see is: 'menu perference" with 4 options, "english, french, spanish and other" choosing "other" requires the user to enter a 4 digit password, i didn't have to enter the sequence of number you listed. I believe this to be the avenue to load the disc. So there is no way to make a copy of the disc without the dvd burner you describe, Have you tried using dvd decryptor to rip the files to the hard drive then burn to disc. I am sorry if i am missing something about copying the disc.

Vtb2:

Nope, that way is not the way to get the hidden password window. Only the way I listed on the starting thread will determine it.

The disc cannot be copied since it contains region information. It can only be copied using an authorized burner and media. Using a regular burner will copy fine but once you use it on your player, you'll find out you will need to bring it to repair because your firmware gets corrupted.

Furious, that cannot be done. There isn't a part number either and my screen shots prove it. You can contact the Panasonic rep but they most likely won't say anything about it or say there is no such thing.

Hey Sango, finally heard back from your contact, and i can confirm that your sequence of key pushes does indeed bring up the password window for the DENON DVD-1600, so that is great i will be getting the disc from him.

Hi Vtb2:

Wow what a suprize. Well there maybe a chance that it will work, but have your fingers crossed if it doesn't. Strange, that it doesn't work on the RP82 because most likely the software is different.

Hi Sango,

I got my service disk. Had no luck with my RP62 ver 073. And RP91 ver 302.
I will try to down grade the players firmware. Do you know where I can get the PR62 other firmware from???? or and older firmware version! I found the RV91.

I also tried it on my RV30 and it worked like a charm.(FYI) And a RV31 too!
RV30 firmware is 453 and RV31 is 45C373!

Thanks a lot! and Keep it the good work! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Still a no go on the RP62 and RP91 players.

Maybe there is another sequence or service disk for these players?

Has anyone from Aus. tried to get the disk from Panasonic for the RP82 or another newer player??? Maybe the XP30 or XP50??

Could someone try?

Any thought's or help would be great.

Later!

jtakeman, no go how? Are you not getting the password window? If not then you'll need to upgrade the firmware. I did an RP91 recently and have an Xp30 coming to try it on.

By the sounds of it, it doesn't seem like he's doing the key sequence correctly.

Te disc doesn't work on like RP82 and the others. Just performing the key sequence will determine if the unit is capable of doing it or not.

Here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=3678736#post3678736) is proof that the RP91 does work with the lastest 262 firmware.

However, I do know the RP62 is also applicable to the SVC Disc #2 as well.

Well I got it to work on my RV30 and RV 31 players! And I upgraded the player(RP91 to ver 262 frimware). and it worked!

But it still a no go on the RP62 player. Must be like the RP82 player.

However, I do know the RP62 is also applicable to the SVC Disc #2 as well.

What is the firmware version on the RP62?????????????????????? Mine is 073! and I have no response to the key sequence!

Let me know how you make out with the XP player!

Well off to JVB to buy the chip mod for the RP62 player!

Thanks and see ya later!

Hi Jay:

I guess it's my mistake. I was told that it works on the 62 since it was similar to that of the RP56 but I guess it wasn't true as you mentioned different software. Hmm I wonder if it works with the CP changers too!

The mod is also a good alternative. Technically it can be better than the SVC Disc 2 if you want the PAL capability as well. When you get the mod, JVB will send the patched version of the firmware (which will be a number up) for firmware to talk to the mod kit. When they do send you the firmware, it's only for that one unit only as the file size is really small.

Hope this helps

Sango thanks for the info on JVB.

I was hoping the service disk did the trick but hay. Can't win them all.

I will also get the bonus of DVD recorder friendly with the JVB kit! I will be able to back up to my Mini DV recorder. I have a portable Sony recorder\player in the car for the kids. Has a monitor ta boot!

I just did the JVB firmware upgrade on my RP91 and can confirm that the unit is now showing firmware version 263. The RP91 came from JVB with version 260. JVB is no longer shipping the newest firmware disc with their players. If you get a mod kit I would first make certain that JVB is providing the newest firmware.

Thanks for the tip! I asked JVB for the latest firmware and they did have it. Player is upgraded and play's awesome! The DVD backup's are real nice. As close to the store bought I ever saw!
I gotta get this kit for the RP91.

A friend tried the sequence on his RV22u and it's like the RP62-RP82 players! I tried this with a RV32 at my Uncle's and got nothin with the sequence there either. Seems to only work with the RV?1, RV?6, RP?1, and RP?6 players.

I have used the service disk on the RV30. It went through the sequence but did not work. The RV31 is region 0 and Vcr friendly! My RP91 is also region 0 and VCR friendly! I will try a RV26 when I get to New Hampshire this summer(at the cottage.)!

I want to thank SANGO and others for all the great info.

Hi Jay:

Well the SVC Disc #2 only supposed to work on the players listed on the start thread. RP91 and RP56 are discoveries. I guess you can try other players as well and see what happends thou =)

I did try my Panasonic A470-EN a while back and even thou it shows the password window, the unit does nothing when it reads the disc. Luckily my unit is already modified so I do not have to worry too much about it.

Hi Vtb2:

I have a copy of the Nero Image file (.nrg) for this disc that can be used to burn to a DVD with a DVD burner that has bitsetting capabilities (most newer burners do). This makes any DVD+R or DVD-R a DVD-ROM disc. I have successfully used this file to burn the DVD and use it in a player of mine. I also have the front and back covers of the dvd case in .jpg image form. The instructions are on the back cover telling you how to use it.

Only certain units can bring up the password window. However, it is also true that at least one or more units which brings up the password window sucessfully, doesn't guarentee that SVC Disc #2 works.

I haven't looked at this thread lately, so I was interested in Atca's post.

There are two possibilities:

1) This is a standard remote, and it has been programmed with a macro that sends an IR signal to make your player region free. I f this is the case, you should be able to "teach" it to another learning remote. Some of the higher end remotes will let you see the IR code in several different formats (a popular format is the Philips Pronto "hex code").

2) This is a modified remote that sends an RF or "different" IR frequency. In that case, without hardward mods to a standard remote, a standard remote would not work.

Sango, do you have any idea what type of remote this is, or what the codes it is sending are?

Joe

DrJoe
03-03-06, 04:14 PM
It looks like these codes DO exist. Here are a couple of threads from one of my two favorite remote control forums, regarding a Sony model

http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mboard/rc-discrete/thread.cgi?keywords=560
http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mboard/rc-pronto/thread.cgi?keywords=25693

This is a thread on a Pioneer:

http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mboard/rc-discrete/thread.cgi?keywords=1838

I'm going to check out the second remote site I use (www.hifi-remote.com, which is big on the JP1 stuff referred to in the first thread) and see if there is any more info. Additionally, I have corresponded with several of the "experts" in the above threads -- I'll ask them if they know anything.

Joe

DrJoe

OK, this is what I've found so far:

http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3026

Discusses the "chipped remote" vis-a-vis a Panasonic DMR-E55 DVD recorder.

It seems that there is either a "Service" remote or at one time was a "Development" remote, that was used to set up these models of Panasonic DVD. Some of the links at Videohelp.com suggest that these remotes are still used at Panasonic service centers. The "hacks" comments for other Panasonic players also seem to agree that this only works for European (region 2) players.

I traded some PM's with the Robman -- one of the "grandest daddies" of them all with respect to remote control hacking. He's the owner of Hifi-Remote.com, and has been active there, on the other remote forums, and even over here. He's a member of the team which "decoded" the JP1 interface on UEI "One-for-All"/Radioshack remotes.

What he said is that holding the "shift" button down causes "setup" to send a different signal. There are a limited number of "free" IR commands. (I believe that it is 256 codes / 8 bits). These are listed for the codeset which controls the DMR-E55 on the thread I linked to above. It is likely that this is the same device which controls the other panny DVD player (if it isn't determine which it is, and I will see if I can get the unused codes list from Rob).

With a UEI "One-for-All"/Radioshack remote, you can manually send each of these "unused codes" and see if the macro worked.

The idea is that you would:

1) Send the unused code. On the UEI remote this is done by pressing "setup" then the 3 digit code
2) Send "enter enter" (this can be a macro)

if the menu pops up, you are good to go.

He points out, that if you have a JP1 cable (the interface between the remotes and the PC, you could "upgrade" a device that has the whole code string, and then only have to press one button instead of 5 or six.

Unfortunately, while I have a JP1 remote/cable, I don't have one of these players. The UEI remotes can be purchased for under $20 from almost any electronics store. You can also purchase them in Europe (http://www.oneforall-int.com/index.html).

If anyone manages to determine the "missing remote code" -- let me know, we will want to "publish" the information in the various remote control forums.

Joe

Are we talking about a 'Service Remote'? If you can find the part number I'd search Ebay. I have a running search on a Pioneer service remote and see them pop up at least once a uarter.

DrJoe
03-04-06, 12:27 PM
It might be.... I don't have a part number -- but a search on "panasonic service remote" on google brought up a couple of hits at http://www.donberg.ie/warehs/grouprp.htm

SERVICE REMOTE CONTROL PANASONIC
SERVICE REMOTE PANASONIC EURO 1 CHASSIS

There are lots of hits.... I also found this quote from the AVS forum (another Sango thread) http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6648181&&#post6648181

And to contribute something I haven't seen online yet, I have been poking around and have found out some things about this unit. I walked the remote codes and found two that aren't documented anywhere else.

OFA EFC Real CODE RESULT
145 241 Reset to defaults "All Set" on screen for a second.
143 242 Enter Service mode

Without a service manual I didn't linger long but here is what found. The display says "FT 0?", chapter forward and back change the number represented by ?. All normal displays like "reading" "play" etc are moved way down the screen, perhaps to make room for service mode status displays? Pressing cancel on the remote exits.

For those who don't know, any universal remote that uses the One For All product codes can send any IR code, Google for details. Would be really interesting if the same code knocked the secret "Service Mode" knock on all Panasonic DVD players.

Saw many references on Google searching to a Panasonic "Service Remote" but it seems nobody bothered to go looking for the way around that. Wondering if there is anything I can do with service mode that would be worth finding a service manual?

These just happen to be two of the "unused codes" that Robman listed.

Could be the "missing codes"!

Copied from the HIFI-Remote.com thread:

Turn On player with no disc inserted

My DVD-RP91 reacts to the 143 code by bringing up "FT 02" on the front display. It doesn't let me do anything else except when I press "Cancel", it initiallizes to default. The 145 code seems to work in a similar fashion.

As far as the instructions go, it seems the enter/enter may bring up something like the "action" button on my RP91. There is an "others" tab but it just lets you go into and out of the "demo" mode.

I'm afraid this is really going to have to be verified on a European DVD player.

Sorry, I've been busy that I dont' really go on now. I looked at the remote listed as well, it's only for TV's.

Nope unfornately, I do not know of the IR codes used to make the mocifications.

Well, I can scroll through FT 02 to FT 03 to FT 01 using the |<< and >>| "skip" buttons. When I play a disk with it set to FT 01, it says "FT NG SKIP" -- it ignores the menu and FBI screeen.

Unfortunately, I don't have any region 2 NTSC disks (just PAL) so I can't verify that it is region free. It seems to revert when I hit "cancel", but sticks if I turn the power off.

With FT 02 and FT 03, it plays the menus, FBI screen, etc. No FT NG SKIP" message

If there is no disk, and it is FT 01, code 212 or 214 brings uo the message "FT NG LOAD"

After it gets into the FT 01 mode, and it is sticking until I "cancel" it -- even if I power down. The player acts weird -- some of the buttons no longer function while others do (fast forward and rewind work, but play does not )

I've asked a coworker to bur a couple of region test disks for me, and I'm going to try to obtain some Region 2 NTSC DVD's to see what I've managed to do.

Okay, this is a toughie. I have a RP91 that is region free, courtesy of the service disc. All my U.S. region 1 and Japanese Region 2 DVDs play fine, so I am sure it is region free.

Now, I have obtained a bunch of Chinese (PRC not Taiwan) DVDs that WILL NOT PLAY on the Panasonic due to region restrictions. They play fine in my computer.

What has been suggested is that the Chinese DVDs are verifying if the player checks the region, and because the RP91 doesn't check the region anymore, the DVD won't play. At least that is the only explanation I can find, so far.

Barring any other explanation and fix for why these DVDs don't play in the "region-free" RP91, I would like to use the service disc to set my player to the Chinese region, region 6 (I think).

How can I accomplish this?

TIA

I don't believe there is a way to do that, TIA.

Are you sure the Chinese discs are NTSC? PAL discs won't play on the RP91 even after the macrovision/region free mods are made by the service disc.

You can see from my earlier posts that there is supposedly a remote control way to make region 1 discs play on region 2 Panny DVD players, but I was unable to duplicate this with my Region 1 player (and a Region 2 disc).

I see I should update this.

Sango was nice enough to send me a region 2 NTSC disc.

Using the remote hack I was unable to get my region 1 DVD player to play region 2 discs. It may be that this only really works for region 2 players and region 1 discs, or it could be I'm still missing something.

Mainland China dvds are PAL. Only Hong Kong is NTSC. If you want to play PAL dvds on the RP91 you'll need a hardware mod like JVB does. I have this and it works great. It will NOT convert PAL to NTSC, just output PAL.

DrJoe

And because there are many cheap Chinese players out there that are both region free and will convert PAL to NTSC, I have a second player to do just that. The hardware mods are expensive, and worthless if you don't have a PAL monitor.

I agree, get a second player. I have 14 including 2 RP91s and 2 XP50s.

The hardware mods are expensive, and worthless if you don't have a PAL monitor.

Not true, I use it to feed my video processor with upcoverts it to HD. I get a much better image with that than a pal converting player. Too each his own.

You are quibbling.

You DO have something that will accept a PAL signal (be it a monitor or a video processor). If all you have is an NTSC television, the mods to the RP91 are expensive and useless.

It is MUCH cheaper to buy a sub-$50 DVD player than to get the mods for the RP91 and a PAL television or video processor.

True, but if you have a regular 'ol NTSC tv then why have an RP91?

DrJoe

True, but if you have a regular 'ol NTSC tv then why have an RP91?

My TV (an RCA D56W20) is "NTSC", HD Ready. In my case, it means that it can tune NTSC OTA, and that it has component video and DVI inputs. It can tune 480i, 480p, and 1080i via component and DVI. Most television sets in the US, even those with internal ATSC tuners, cannot "tune" PAL video signals. Please correct me if I'm wrong -- is the PAL output from the modded RP91's viewable on a US television set in 480p mode? I'm not aware that it is.

For what it is worth, I purchased the RP91 because of its ability to manually scale video. My set (like many HD Ready sets) can only manually scale video at 480i. For 480p it is aspect-locked. That means when using the progressive output of the DVD player, incorrectly flagged letterboxed DVD's like "9-1/2 Weeks", and "bonus material" that is in the letterbox format on anamorphic DVD's are "frozen" in a 4:3 aspect ratio. I don't like the zoom modes on my TV, so rather than watching them in 480i and zooming them with the set, I use the RP91 to zoom them in progressive mode.

Thanks,

Joe

Yes, it's perfect for HD capable (480p and up) display. But a regular 'ol ntsc interlaced set it is not.

The RP91 with the mod will only output 576i PAL. There never was a formal 575p format as they couldn't get macrovision to work with it. However, there are players that do ouput 575p, mostly Chinese made.

FYI, I'm willing to sell my RP91 service disc if anyone needs one.

I have copy of the PANA-DVD service disc (on a Verbatim DVD-R For Authouring) that I used to upgrade my RV31 (UK model) The disc is labelled DVD-TS20 is it any use to anyone ??? As I Don't need it anymore.

mamera_hfmd

The disc cannot be copied because there is an area on the disc which cannot be dublicated even thou if you copied the disc successfully. Attempting to do so anyway will result corruption of the firmware on the dvd player after the password confirmation when the disc is being read.
---

Add on: If you guys are putting passwords in without the disc (as a test) and confirming, the unit will "initialize" itself so factory default settings so you guys need to put the user settings back in again. But if you don't want your unit to initialize itself, simply just power off the unit and turn on again when the password window pops up.

I join " panasonic service disk " my dvd, initially(originally) I work, but then, spend(pass) something, like to restart and now the leds gleam and in the display it(he,she) goes out "change", since I recover the unit of dvd..

thanks.

Hugo,

My guess is that your native language is not English. That's OK -- but I don't have a clue what you meant to say. Would you try to be a little clearer? By "join" do you mean you loaded the "Panasonic Service Disc 2" DVD into your DVD player? what does "spend(pass) something, like to restart and now the leds gleam and in the display it(he,she) goes out "change", since I recover the unit of dvd" mean?

The image requires both an authorizing burner (which is basically for commerical use) and media. You'll be looking at spending 4K+ to get this kind of stuff..

So does anyone in the UK have the Panasonic DVD Service Disk 2, please?

As mentioned elsewhere, dvdchips in the uk will rent them for (now) £22, but I'd rather borrow someone else's!!

Hi

Does anyone in western Canada, or Canada, or even North america have the Panasonic DVD Service Disk 2? I would pay for shipping both ways, or even buy it from you.

Hi there,

I'm in the UK and have a european Panasonic RV-41 dvd player. I'm not sure if its any different to the US version. I was wondering if anyone knows whether the US firmware update will work on the european player?

Thanks, Matt:)

Hey Guys,

This thread looks like it was originally about the Panasonic Service Disk (2) I was just wondering if anyone has one, or has been able to copy one?

I would be happy to pay shipping and/or buy it, but at the moment I am in Japan. Which is why I need it actually I managed to pick up a "Panasonic Q" (gamecube DVD player hybrid) for only like $60 and was hoping to bring it home cause its so damn pretty. Well now that I have Gone way off topic I will stop

But please let me know if you can help me through a PM or just on the thread.
