Yeah I went to BB and CC seemed to beat there prices. I wish Monroe had both stores. CC really had some good deals on open box tvs that appeared to be brand new and I couldnt find anything wrong with them. Just a little hesitant to spend that much money on something not brand new.

Monroe will probably get a Best Buy and Circuit City once there's more HD stations in the market.... or maybe they'll at least start looking at Monroe. I don't imagine there's many HDTVs in El Dorado....most people here think that regular digital cable is HD

Sorry all, been busy at the transmitter site.... BTW... Circut City is building next to the Toys-r-us in Monroe... I don't have an ETA on their completion. We will start a promo next week concerning HD... it will be a teaser.. "The future of Television is Comming"

Would you mind if I put a link to this thread on my little information website, or would it be more interesting if I started a local forum? Q & A situation.. You remember when you got your first HDTV... Wouldn't it have been nice to have some where to go from the start?

Anyhow.. let me know.. BTW the HDTV link is live on our website... www.nbc10news.net

Hey Joe,

I tihnk the Q & A would be a great idea.... and as far as a forum goes, both ideas are great. What do you personally think would be best?

Also, Im sorry about my email filter. I thought I had your address added in my address book, but I guess I didn't...I get all the emails sent to me, it's just the ones not in my address book go to another folder. About another month til full power!

Yeah it would have been great when I first bought an HDTV to have a site like this or a local one. I personally think both ideas are great on the forum. Great news about Circuit City in Monroe.

Same for the World Series tonight. Full screen analog. Sure looked nice last night while it was working. :)

Hopefully they will get the kinks worked out soon.

I spent the day yesterday on the phone with the KFXK chief engineer finalizing the encoder settings and coordinating splicer configuration with FOX TOC.

Everything appears to be working normally now and FOX HD should be available on KFXK from now on.

Please keep commenting on what you are seeing over the air because feedback on this forum is a valuable asset to help us improve our product.

No HD on the World Series as the telecast starts on KFXK.

There was a problem with the newest software installed on the Tandberg HD encoder at KFXK and compatibility with the FOX splicer.

They loaded the same version we have been running here in Waco this morning and are monitoring the output of the splicer today for any further issues.

If no new problems arise they will be in HD for the game tonight.

Sorry about the delay guys but we are slaves to our vendors sometimes.

Something I have noticed locally compared to D*. Local HD doesn't pixelate while D* does badly at times. I take it locals use full bandwith in their HD channels right?

Spiderman2006
10-31-06, 12:00 AM
Why doesn't my D* tuner give me an option to pick up KTVE Analog ota. I went through my antenna setup and even clicked zipcodes for ElDorado and Monroe but it will not list anything for KTVE. I would think I can pick up KTVE up better than KTAL locally with my current setup.

KeithAR2002
10-31-06, 12:09 AM
Hmmm...that's pretty odd. I have an H20 receiver, so it doesnt let me get analog channels, but you really shouldn't be having a problem. Have you tried calling D* to see what the problem is? And yeah, you will probably get KTVE, both analog and digital (once they go full power) better than KTAL. Channel 6 always has bad impulse noise, especially if you live in the fringe area. I noticed on my H20, that D* doesn't have KTVE-DT in their database... so you may want to call them and see if they even know KTVE exists!

Spiderman2006
10-31-06, 12:13 AM
Well last night I watche d the Cowboys/Carolina game and I could get it on 6-1KTVEDT. Looked good but ofcourse not as good as HD, wasn't in HD. Now I couldn't get any signal for the HD counterpart of that station, if it's even up. I think I just have the HZ10 receiver. Where do u live keith?

KeithAR2002
10-31-06, 12:18 AM
I live in El Dorado.... about half a mile from KTVE's low-powered DT transmitter. Once they go full power, they will be transmitting from their tower in Huttig, AR. Now were you getting KTVE-DT last night, or KTAL-DT? I noticed you typed 6-1 KTVE... KTAL is low power right now as well, but they are suppose to be in HD, full power on November 9th. (we'll see) Is the HZ10 an older model? Im not really familiar with D* receivers...

Spiderman2006
10-31-06, 04:55 AM
I meant H10. Yah, it's not the newer H20 receiver. Got it bout 6 months ago. Still don't have an Hd tuner on my main tv because A) I want tivo, which I currently have. B)$299 is expensive for an H20 tivo receiver C)Not enough HD channels to justify spending $299 on that receiver.
They should think about my retention because I am tempted to go Dish Network. I think they are a lil cheaper and you get some movie channels, starz I think and movie channel(not sure) and you get more HD channels, yah HD lite. Which to say doesn't look as good local ota for sure.
I was getting that 3rd ktve digital channel. It wasn't the HD version, checked the guide and noticed it wasb't in HD but the other one was. Digital local looked better still than that soft looking D* signal. So how far is that KTVE tower from me? I live in McNeil, Arkansas. Bout 6 miles north of Magnolia.

Spiderman2006
10-31-06, 04:59 AM
The channel I was getting KTALDT, non Hd channel 6 but I am not even getting enough signal for it. Neither for channel 12. I need to get a better antenna for sure and a preamp. Just havnt had the time.

Spiderman,

The KTVE tower is located in Huttig AR, in Union County. The antenna height will be 1850' and according to our signal plot, Magnolia will be well within the grade B footprint.

KFXK is apparently back in 16X9 letterbox mode today.....however there seems to be problems with the 16X9 picture on 31.1 right now......the picture is divided into three segments.....the top features a heavily pixelated version of Judge Alex, the middle features a still picture from today's Jerry Springer airing on KLPN 31.2, and the bottom features a still picture from the end of the last segment of Judge Alex before the show went into commercial break just a few minutes ago. I sense a return to SD before 3PM.

Maybe they oughta send some people from KETK to KFXK to help fix the problem?

MrSmurf
10-31-06, 10:23 PM
Spiderman on your HR10-250 D* receiver you can only pickup Digital channels. I have the same receiver as you and it only comes with two ATSC (digital) tuners so unfortuntally you can not pickup any analog signals with it.

Spiderman, if you are talking about KTAL, I haven't heard an update about KTAL since the links that windham and simmonstwin posted about their HD status.... one can only hope they will keep their word about the new date... I'm just happy they are trying to get online! It's good to see Nexstar finally taking HD seriously. They see that the audience is *rapidly* growing, and they are losing viewers by not upgrading. When you see Nexstar getting on the ball like they are now, you know HD is quickly becoming #1 among TV viewers.. and the general public is finally realizing what HD is... it's not just crappy "digital" cable anymore :)

Since we have a few engineers here, I have a question.

Is it a major feat to broadcast in HD and have a crawl going?

The reason I ask is that virtually all HD was in SD on election night in Shreveport. I assume it is because of the crawls. It seems that superimposing the crawls should be the same on HD as it is in SD.

KBoswell

Ronald;

I think it has more to do with the stations capabilities. In our case, we can only pass-through HD from the network at this time. We can do most anything else we need to in SD. But, when we converted from analogue to digital, HD was exponentially (I'm tempted to say "hell-atiously") more expensive, and frankly, not yet truly developed. (For example, I seem to recall that the supposedly HD cameras weren't actually 1080 but something less and would *attempt* to upconvert. YET, they were several more thousands of dollars. It just wasn't a prudent use of the public's money for us to do that. --we, A.E.T.N., are a state agency. We opted to pass-through-only HD, build a full SD plant, and wait for reliable products to be built and for prices to get out of the stratosphere.)

So, I said all that to say all this. The station may be able to pass-through the network election coverage, but could not ADD their crawl locally and retain the image in HD. Hope this helps. (<grin> your mileage may vary).

Anybody else care to share their experiences???

Well it's too bad the stations can't put their election results on a subchannel, but it would probably be more trouble than it's worth. Oh well, I think I can put up with one night of no HD...lol..except of course, when the weather gets bad, then we'll have weather maps on the screen..

Well...To be able to crawl over HD programming is several tens of thousands of bucks.. Now Keith, You have a valid point about using the subchannel for elections results, but there still is a huge capital outlay to add a ticker on the subchannel... another area for us will be storm warn on the HD channel..

Hello everyone. Just found this site. I live in Texarkana, AR and get my local programming from Shreveport. I am on Dish Networks, and the HDTV is great, except they have no idea when the local channels will become available through Dish in HD. So, I'm wondering if anyone in this area has had any luck using an external large directional antenna with pre-amp? Antennaweb says it can be done...but I've yet to find anyone who has done it, or who in the area to contact.

Thanks,
Mickey

KeithAR2002

Hey Mick,

Well in my opinion, you have an excellent chance of getting the Shreveport HD signals...with the excpetion maybe being KLTS (PBS/LPB) since they are low power. Won't know 100% til you try, but KTBS, KSLA, KTAL, and KMSS are almost a certainty. I don't know about KSHV... but you may be surprised. Go to www.warrenelectronics.com and look at ordering a Channel Master 4228 and a Channel Master 7777 preamp. That antenna is the *best* for long range digital reception, and the preamp will help out your signals even more. Antennaweb shows Texarkana as being around 50-55 miles from the transmitters, which is a good thing, since you aren't so close that the signal will overload, but not too far away that the curvature of the earth interferes with reception. You aren't in the earth's "radio shadow" at 55 miles, in other words. With a 4228, and 7777 preamp, mounted on your roof (or 15 - 20 feet above ground), you should get some healthy signals. In El Dorado, I could get KMSS-DT every evening after sundown in time for FOX primetime, and I was 85 miles from the transmitter. KTBS and KPXJ made it to my antenna a little later in the evening. Hope this helps! And I'd pull the trigger on the 4228 and 7777 preamp...you won't regret it, believe me!

Hey Joe, yeah I figured it would cost stations a pretty penny overlaying weather graphics, election results, etc., over HD. I personally can live with a little bit of SD if the weather is bad... I'd hate for someone to get killed just b/c we all don't want to miss Law and Order in HD for a couple minutes :(

I also have moved to Jackson... well actually a subburb of Jackson (wouldn't live in the city for nothing! ) My family is still in El Dorado (always will be).. so I'll be in AR on the weekends, so I'll still be able to watch KTVE-HD! It's a big change going from only having AETN and KTVE-SD digital wise, to having NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, and PBS-HD all the time! I have a 4228 just sitting on my living room floor, and can get perfect signals from all the Jackson locals... although I've noticed WLBT-DT (RF 9) gets pixelation when a car pulls into my apartment complex. Is that due to WLBT being on VHF? I noticed the same thing with KETZ in El Dorado. I also get WJTV (CBS/RF52) at 100% signal, but I experience random dropouts... do you think an attenuator would help that situation any?

In any case, I'll still be watching KTVE-HD 2 to 3 days a week... can't stay away from my hometown for very long before I get homesick...haha. If I don't talk to any of you before Thursday, have a Happy Thanksgiving! :)

Hey Keith,

Thanks for the info. I've been doing a lot of research lately on all this. Of course, Dish keeps telling me it's the Shreveport stations not ready to send their HD signals to satellite. But, after talking to Dale Cassidy, the Chief Engineer for KTBS, he said, "We are ready and waiting for the Dish network to carry our signal." So, since I'm having to watch so many football games in poor quality, except ESPN and ESPN2, I'm going to install the external antenna. From my research, I had already decided on the Channel Master 4228 and the Channel Master 7777 preamp...so, I'm glad you concur. And, Dale Cassidy said they have people receiving their signal as far north as Deirks, AR...and that's quite a ways north of here, so I should be good. Now, I've got to find someone here to install it. ;-)

Thanks,
Mickey

KTBS will be your strongest signal I'm sure... since there were a few people from around Magnolia on here a while back, and they had no problems with KTBS.

Here is the coverage map for KTBS-DT, just to give you an idea of how strong of a signal they have -

http://i10.tinypic.com/4gnkabn.gif

Now, look at KSLA-DT...

http://i15.tinypic.com/2e2mmhl.gif

You can tell by the map that KSLA clearly has a lower powered transmitter than KTBS... but Texarkana is still in KSLA's predicted coverage area, so you shouldn't have a problem with them. You never know til you try! :)

Hope so , KETK 56 failed to switch for the last entire Sunday night NFL game. What a waste considering all the work and money, KTAL would give me 2 of all the major networks in HD, redundancy for those forgetful switch operators. FOX stations use a different deal, switching eliminated I think. But 33 & 51 have different games sometimes too. I'm "deep fringe", but in 2 markets. Big antenna's worth it. I personally will never subscribe to cable.... while it's nice to have, I just think the 50.00+ a month could be used better elsewhere. And having digital and HD makes it that much better. I can handle one subchannel on a station...two is TOLBERABLE, but barely....and they have to have a top of the line encoder. Yeah I like that FOX has a splicer to control the bandwidth... I wish all the networks could do that! I also think all stations should have an automatic switchover to HD, so viewers don't have to call the station every time they mess up by not switching over! At least then, if the program is not in HD, we know that it's not suppose to be! :)

I got the following from Robert Brown, the President of the Texarkana HD Users Group:

"The December 1st switch to HD and full digital strength by the NBC affiliate for Texarkana-Shreveport, KTAL (DT-15), has been delayed.

The initial shipment of new structural steel, needed to reinforce the existing tower in order to support the new antenna properly, proved to be an inappropriate match for the existing tower. While the replacement steel has arrived, the weather needs to be good and the winds near the top of the tower need to be fairly clam for the new steel and antenna to be installed safely by the tower crew. I'm told, weather permitting, it will take about 2 weeks of actual workdays to finish the job. KTAL hopes to have everything working by Christmas.
When the upgrade takes place, KTAL will be able to "pass through" HD from NBC but will not yet be able to support HD from syndicated shows, such as Wheel of Fortune, although that upgrade has been requested of corporate management for the new budget year."

So, it looks like we'll still be waiting a while for KTAL....WHO KNOWS!! ;-)

Are there any more users on here from Texarkana? My Channel Master 4228 antenna and 7777 pre-amp should be in next week...and I'm wondering who I might get to install it, and how high I should go with the mast???

I'm thinking about attaching it to my chimney (not brick, but wood) in the back of the house (north side) on a 30' pole. The chimney goes up approx 18' from the ground. Does anyone think it will support the extra 12' or so of mast above it??? Or, do I need to think of something else?

I will need to point it south toward the Shreveport channels transmitting towers in Mooringsport, about 55 miles away. (I live at the bottom of a hill, so that's why I'm thinking a 30' mast.) The compass readings for the transmitting towers in Mooringsport are anywhere from 170 degrees to 176 degrees, as the location of my house is at 33.492003 N Latitude and 94.008103 W Longitude.

Thanks,

I knew they would manage to muck it up until AFTER football season was over...NOTHING else on KTAL is worth watching without HD, IMO. I do appreciate the effort but they waited so friggin long to get started. Maybe by the time next season rolls around it will be working. Now they need another 2 weeks of good weather? We had months and months of dry weather and they wait till winter to do the outside stuff...poor planning.

So, it looks like we'll still be waiting a while for KTAL....WHO KNOWS!! ;-)

Hey Mick,

Well Im not sure if there are any other people on here from Texarkana, but an install is pretty easy. I've never done a chimney mount.... all I have done is a tripod....which is pretty easy. You might want to look into doing that, instead... just a suggestion :)

Oh and also, regarding living on the bottom of a hill... at my house in El Dorado, it is at a bottom of a hill (very bottom) and got pretty good results for not even being in a predicted coverage area for any DT stations.... and you're well within the service area for the SHV digitals, so you could probably be underground and still get the main ones from Shreveport..

Hey Keith,

Thanks for the info. I received my Channel Master 4228 and 7777 pre-amp from Warren Electronics yesterday. And, today I actually finally found someone in Texarkana to set this up for me. In case anyone else in the Texarkana area is looking for someone, it is Audio Video Concepts...Cody Pettigrew. They will be out Tuesday to hook me up. I'll report back then on what it looks like. Cody me told today that he actually installed one in an attic for someone in my area (Sugar Hill) and that this guy was picking up all the Shreveport stations with the same antenna and pre-amp I've got, through his attic. And, he said I'd probably be able to get by with a 15-20' mast with no problem. So, I feel alot better about it now. At least I'll get hooked up just in time for the college bowl season...and to watch the Cowboys and Saints in HD next weekend!!!!! ;-) Sure glad the Cowboys aren't on KTAL!!!!!!!

Hate to burst your bubble Mick but NBC used the new "flex" schedule crap and will have the Cowboys vs the Aints, so NO HD(thanks KTAL!). I am pretty mad about it also, but I kind of knew they would not get even one game on the air in HD this season. I hate the flex junk, just has to cause a LOT of problems for fans with tickets trying to plan a trip to the game, just to make a cpl extra ratings points for the networks.

Hey Ken, DANG I forgot about them moving it to a night game...which is NBC, instead of their normal Fox schedule!! I'm sitting here watching the 'Boys and Giants right now, and was saying this was my last game to have to watch without HD!! LOL!!! It's hard to imagine all the problems KTAL has had, when the other stations didn't!! And, I agree with your earlier post...why in the world didn't they plan on doing this in the summer when the weather was pefect for working on a tower???????

NBC KETK-DT 22(56.1) from Tyler has a killer signal, but their transmitter is in Mt. Selman, between Tyler and Jacksonville. That's more or less 100 miles from your location in Bossier. KETK also has a nasty habit of "forgetting" to switch to HD, especially during the Sunday night games (weekend crew?).

After looking at the college bowl schedule last night, I found not one bowl game on NBC...THANK GOODNESS!!!! And, hopefully NBC's flex schedule won't select the Cowboys anymore after the Saints game. So, in all reality, we won't have to worry about having to watch much football on NBC after this weekend!! And, they sure don't have anything else to watch!!

They have an LMA with the owners of KTAL, and they were due to launch Nov. 24. Of course, the date was missed, so now the new one is around mid-December.

Here is their predicted coverage area once they go full power.. since the tower is east of El Dorado, that signal will have a pretty difficult time making it in to Bossier Parish :(

Still nothing to report on my HD quality from Texarkana...since I didn't get my antenna installed today. After suggesting Audio Video Concepts to everyone, I take it back. I would advise everyone to stay away from Audio Video Concepts for their antenna installations. They stood me up on my install today. I had a 2:00pm appointment...the installer finally called at 3:30 saying they were running late and would be here soon. I called the installer back at 4:45 saying it was getting dark and asked if they were still coming...he said yes. I called back at 5:30...and they said they were on their way. I called the office at 6:30, when I could no longer get in touch with the installer's cell phone. The office said that he'd just called and reported he was on his way to my house...but, that she'd call him and call me right back to let me know...still no word at 7:15. So, I give up...after taking the afternoon off from work to have this done. I will begin looking for someone else tomorrow. Needless to say, I am very upset with these people.

All,

Yesterday I blasted Audio Video Concepts in Texarkana for standing me up on my antenna install. However, they showed up last night about the time I got off work and installed my antenna. They did an excellent job, and my reception is perfect. They were also about $55 cheaper than another quote I got for the installation...which kind of alleviated my being upset with them from the night before. ;-) Anyway, Bradie Brackman did the install...the Channel Master 4228 antenna is on a 20' pole, with a Channel Master 7775 UHF-only pre-amp. I am getting a signal strength of between 88-93 on the Shreveport stations...except KTAL of course. And, I live in the Sugar Hill area of Texarkana, at the bottom of a hill!! The picture quality and digital sound are even better than through my HD programming with Dish Networks. The only problems I see are associated with the local programming, as most commercials, and even the news is still an analog broadcast. But, even though they're very busy, I would recommend Audio Video Concepts to install your antenna, if you're in the Texarkana area. The other places are busy as well, and cost more. I did explain to them that I thought it was unprofessional to not even call me the night before. However, they said they were having cell phone problems, and were tied up on another job...which I understand.

Yeah, it's starting to look promising. I heard they were still operating with their old 1500 watt transmitter almost 200 feet from the top of their Vivian tower. So, maybe we're on our way to getting KTAL in HD. Maybe in time for the Saints vs Cowboys???? Yeah, sure!!! Since I'll be at the game, I think I'll setup my DVR to record it on analog and HD, just in case. ;-)

I live in Texarkana, Texas and receive the Shreveport HD channels through CableOne. Except for KTAL of course, even though they do have a channel number for the eventual HD broadcast already assigned. I've been very upset that all the SNF games have not been in HD, and was really upset when I heard they moved the Cowboys/Saints game to this Sunday night.

BUT, last night I tuned into channel 6 on a standard TV and noticed the image was stretched. I thought to myself, "Hey, I think they're attempting to broadcast HD!". So I tuned into Jay Leno with our HD tuner and low and behold, it was in full, glorious HD. I couldn't believe it! It's funny that they're sending the HD broadcast through the standard broadcast as well, stretching the 4:3 content (news, commercials) to fill the 16:9 frame, and on the standard broadcast you could actually see the right side of the letter D of the HD logo on the left side of the screen. There must be some pressure to get it working for the game Sunday night. I was wondering why they couldn't just send the HD broadcast through cable even if they didn't have the tower at full power, but obviously they are doing it now.

We usually have some friends over to watch primetime Cowboys games on our 120" front projection HD screen, but I sure would hate to invite people over and KTAL screw up between now and then and it not be in HD. Standard 4:3 broadcasts look absolutely horrible on a big projection screen. By the way, the Cowboys do have another game on NBC this year, on Christmas day against the Eagles.

I saw in the guide last night that KTAL 6 and KTAL 6-1 had different guide info(6 was showing the names but 6-1 was showing Event 24 or something similar) and i thought maybe...but i didn't bother to check, after all it is KTAL.....LOL
If they can get it working GREAT, and THANK YOU KTAL. Just have to hope that whatever they have rigged up doesn't quit till Monday.:-)

Mick61
12-08-06, 02:17 PM
Hey Scorpiq, glad to see another Texarkana person on here. Standard 4:3 broadcasts look absolutely horrible on a 50" plasma too!! That's why I put up a UHF antenna, to get the local channels in HD. I didn't want to go back to cable, because I get about 30 HD channels with Dish...but not the locals, and right now they have no timeline on when they'll offer the Shreveport locals in HD.

I actually talked to Jay Butler at a party the other night and asked him why they didn't upgrade their HD cable box to one that will accept HDMI connections. With Dish, I can go component or HDMI...and there's no comparison between the two. The digital HD of an HDMI connection is definitely superior for video, but I think the biggest difference is in the audio, with a surround sound system. Anyway, Jay didn't know what I was talking about...so looks like Cable One may continue using yesterday's technology for a while. I was actually thinking about going back to cable, just to get the locals in HD...until I researched their box. And, after installing an antenna to pull the locals, I'm definitely glad I didn't go back to cable now.

Hey, maybe KTAL will have it completed before the game Sunday night...or at least before the game on Christmas day.

12-08-06, 03:52 PM
I've actually been following this thread since it started 3 years ago when I first learned that you could receive broadcast HDTV over the air. There haven't been many people from Texarkana that have posted here, so I had no idea if you could even receive them here or not. I didn't own an HDTV and I didn't want to invest time and money until I KNEW I would have some HD content to watch. (I just bought an HD-DVD player so now there's plenty of content.)

Well, about two years ago, I just happened to be looking at CableOne's website and it had a section for HDTV. I was very excited to know I could now receive HD channels through cable without having to set up an antenna. So I bought the projector and screen, signed up for the HD/digital package and was good to go. I think at that time there were only a couple of local channels in HD, ABC and CBS. I was so glad FOX started broadcasting HD before this football season, I had to watch most 'Boys games last year in standard def.

That first cable receiver was horrible, though. It would not record programs we had set, it would lock up and it had to be rebooted frequently, fast-forward and rewind did not work hardly at all, etc. Well, earlier this year I learned they had a dual tuner HD receiver. So we exchanged our old one for this new one. It is a MUCH better receiver, we've had virtually no problems with it, and the dual tuner is awesome. It does have an optical out so we are able to get 5.1 surround sound as well.

Holy shitski. I am watching Wheel of Fortune in HD on KTAL!!!! Although it is kind of a soft picture. Some tweaking is needed. Let's hope it holds for the game.

Go Saints!!!!

Damn, now I need a new antenna. I currently have a long range channel master w/rotator and amp compliments of VOOM!

I have always had to rotate to get KTAL but I lose Fox, ABC, CBS, and PBS when I do that.

What are guys in S'port/Bossier using that doesn't require re-aiming to be able to pick up all 5 stations?

Kudos KTAL!!! Well conditional kudos providing it is up and working Sunday! :p Hopefully the weekend crew will get the switching right. :p On edit, there hasn't been any switching. They are zooming the 4:3 to make 16:9 as opposed to stretching or switching to 4:3. Great idea in the testing phase.

Thanks for the bowtie suggestion. I have heard good things about them. Just wish I could find it locally in case a return is needed.

I actually found a sweet spot tonight. But it is backasswards with the arrowhead pointing 180 degrees away from the tower. But as I recall I found this a long time ago and it only works at night.

Either way I emailed kudos to KTAL.

I'm still not sure what KTAL is doing. The analog signal seems to be simulating a 16:9 picture somewhat....but even with a partial zoom setting on my 50" plasma, it still doesn't fill the screen. I can't even stretch it or zoom it to fill the screen. And, last night while watching Jay Leno, it had the NBC HD icon on the screen, but was definitely not in HD. I can't see what you guys are talking about on the KTAL HD channel, 06-01, as I'm still only getting about 50-56 signal strength from Texarkana.

I can't see them getting this fixed before game-time tomorrow night, so I sure am glad I'll be there...as KTAL is worse than ever now!!!!

Mick61
12-09-06, 05:08 PM
The following is from an email I recieved from Robert Brown, of the Texarkana HD Users Group:

"KTAL-DT-15 is now broadcasting in 1080i and, when available from NBC, in HD.

However, there are some issues:

1. They are still using the "temporary digital channel antenna" they've been using for some time, awaiting the topping off of the new antenna and, with the new antenna, full power.

2. Some of us cannot receive the digital programming OverTheAir any longer because, since KTAL cut their system to 1080i yesterday, we've lost that capability, which was working well before their cutover.

In the past, with other local stations (KETG-DT-13-Arkadelphia and KSLA-DT-17-Shreveport), this symptom has always been the result of a setting at the station which, while within the "correct settings" choices, did not permit certain digital TV tuners to receive the signal successfully. KTAL does not yet recognize this as their problem. I suppose we will have to wait until they do. Both KETG and KSLA fingerpointed on this and loudly claimed it was a consumer problem until their corporate management sent someone out to fix it, which solved the problem. In both instances, CableOne was experiencing the same problem (no sound when in HD on KETG and no picture at all on KSLA) so it added a little clout to the protest.

3. Now remember, the digital signal is ALWAYS 1080i, whether or not the transmitted picture is 16x9 or 4x3. Also, it is my understanding that the analog (6) and digital (15) channels are both derived from the same data stream from the station and from NBC. Furthermore, many of the local cable companies are using the KTAL digital signal as their "master" source for both the KTAL analog and KTAL digital cable channels they send to customers over their cable network. For instance, up here in Texarkana, CableOne uses KTAL-DT-15 as the source for both their analog 6 and digital 465 channels provided to subscribers. Therefore, as of this writing, some viewers are not receiving the correct 16x9 screen on their HD sets or the full 4x3 screen on their 4x3 analog sets. This is because KTAL has chosen to use a non-standard aspect ratio, 14x9, which is a "compromise" recommended by their corporate engineers, which they hope will tone down complaints form 4x3 viewers who don't want gray bars on the sides of the screen. All other local stations which have earlier adopted a similar policy have changed back to the standard 16x9. No consumer who knows what's going on wants a distorted "zoomed" picture. I think if they figure out how to provide the 4x3 aspect ratio (cropped) picture to the analog broadcast without fiddling with the 16x9 aspect ratio for the digital broadcast (whether the program is 16x9 or 4x3 on the digital broadcast), most people would be happy, as they are on other channels."

I am curious as I switch to the new world of HDTV. I live in North Bossier City. I have Direct TV and I pay for Suddenlink (use their internet and did not want all the direct tv boxes at all of my sets). How has direct tv and Suddenlink been with Shreveport locals in HD. Which one would you choose? How compressed are the locals on suddenlink and direct tv. I stopped at Ivan Smith furniture on Pines Road and they were using a off air antenna, which was great to see. I assume since I am am 14 miles from (KTBS,KSLA,etc) and 28 miles from KTAL that I could mount a small antenna in my attic and get a great picture
thanks for everyone's help and views !!!! Steve

I use DirecTV. You can get locals from satellite, but not HDTV or Digital channels. For those, you must use an antenna. I'm in north bossier and I use a 4-bay bow tie from channel master. I get most everything well without having to rotate the antenna - ever. When KMSS-Fox was broadcasting from their studio, I needed a second antenna pointed at Independence Stadium. Now I just point toward Vivian and it's all good.

Shreveport will probably get HD locals via satellite when the last bird is launched in a year or two.

You have to go into the menu of the TV where you set up HD channels and add frequency assignment 15.

Or just do a re-scan and let it pick up everything it can get.

AND your HD TV has to have a built in tuner to do that.

Yeah, it has a built in tuner. I was able to manually tune in 3.1 and a few others but I didn't know what I was suppose to do for ktal. I tried 6.1 earlier but got no signal. I might have to pull out the manual.

I dont think KTAL will be full power til the first of the year, currently they are doing HD, but they are still operating at a miserly power level. Their tower is in Vivian, close to the AR state line... you should be able to get them with a good antenna, what kind do you have?

In Monroe, KNOE, KLTM (PBS) and KARD (SD) is all you will get reliably... there were a couple people on here that had success with KTBS (SHV), KALB (NBC Alexandria) and couple of the Jackson digitals, but that was in the evening. KTVE is suppose to go full power in the next couple weeks, you may want to go to their website www.region10.com, they have an HD forum up for the Ark-La-Miss, and they have a alot of people on there from Monroe. The chief engineer also posts frequent updates on the status of KTVE-HD.

KeithAR2002
12-12-06, 09:00 PM
The Silver Sensor is well regarded, but I've had better luck with a good quality RCA rabbit ears w/UHF loop, in Jackson at least. An also the Silver Sensor doesn't do well at all on VHF... WLBT (NBC) is on VHF 9 here, and I could *barely* get a lock on them with it, and I was on the third floor! You can always try it since it's really only 25 bucks and if it doesn't work you could return it, or get both the silver sensor and a RCA rabbit ears like the ones at Wal-mart.. whatever you do, don't get electrified rabbit ears... the coax cable will probably work better than those. You should also get KARD with either type of those antennas. Good luck!

http://www.bybb.com/product_info.php?products_id=22996

This model worked very well for me, I tried looking for another at Walmart about a month ago, but all they had were those crappy electrified ones, and some Phillips ones...I ended up getting a Phillips, but it's really not the best performer... I use that one for the bedroom tv, and I'm lucky that I get everything but FOX. Since that RCA ANT145 is on bybb.com, maybe you can go to Basic/Best Buy in Monroe and pick one up... the only thing I don't like are the tuning knobs, but it's difficult to find an indoor antenna without those things...you just have to mess with it til it's tuned on the right knob... Hope it works out for you!

Hey no problem gstylez..good luck with them...you might need a small outdoor antenna for KTVE when they go full power, since their tower is about 37 miles from Monroe, but you won't know til that happens. If you need something a little stronger, an outdoor antenna indoors near a window will probably do the trick... I have a Channel Master 4228 on my living room floor for my main tv, and it works very well picking up all the channels in Jackson, and occasionally even one from Meridian! It's a UHF antenna, but it does very well pricking up high VHF, and the 4228 is only 45 bucks at www.warrenelectronics.com. You migh want to look in to that, as well.

BTW...I'm getting oustanding reception from all the Shreveport stations, except KTAL of course, with my OTA antenna. I just hope KTAL is full power by Christmas, or I'm watching the 'Boys in analog again!! Sounds like the guys in the Shreveport/Bossier area are getting good HD reception from the low wattage temporary HD antenna KTAL is using. But, can't reach it this far north. And, as of last night, they're analog channel 6 is still broadcasting in 14:9 format. They said this was a compromise recommended by their corporate engineers to keep the 4:3 folks happy. Oh well...someday!!!!

mobetta,

How strong of a signal are you getting from KTBS? You're a few miles outside theie coverage area, so you're doing very good locking 3.1 in! KSLA only reaches just a little north of Texarkana, so that will be more of a problem. KMSS, KTBS, and KPXJ are your most likely targets from northern Hempstead county. You might have some luck getting KTHV-DT (CBS in Little Rock) as their signal reaches pretty close to you. Since they are on CH 12 digitally, you may have some interference from KSLA analog. But when you get your 4228 installed, try aiming it toward LR, because you're close enough that you may be surprised..especially when the 4228 comes in to play.

Hey Mobetta,

Yes, I get FOX in HD!! I get about a 92-93 signal with the 4228 and 7775 pre-amp on a 20' mast. And, you're absolutely right, FOX with Dish was by-far the worst station we had. I used to get so frustrated trying to watch the Cowboys on FOX. But, at least that was all I ever watched on FOX. Now, FOX and CBS are my best channels. ABC is close, but not quite as good...and I still don't even want to talk about NBC (KSLA)!!! LOL!!!

Ronald_Jeremy, check out warrenelectronics.com for the 4228. About $46 and I got it about 4 days after I ordered it.

Keith, I kinda figured you didn't have a wife. LOL!!!! You should've heard my wife when I told her you had your 4228 in your living room...and then said I think I'll bring ours into the den so I can turn it when I need to with no problems!!!!

You know, since you are having good luck with 3.1, you might want to try for KPXJ (CH 21), especially when you get the 4228 and the preamp. From El Dorado, KMSS-DT was actually the strongest signal I got from SHV... and I really didn't have much luck with anything until I installed the 4228. I had mine at around 25 feet, but my house was in a low spot. That's the bad thing about OTA reception, it's either very pleasing or very disappointing :(

Well I tried to actually hang it on the living room wall...I needed some wall decor...lol.. but my signals are a lot better with it on the floor which was a surprise. KTAL making HD progress!! I'm 70 miles from the xmitter, and can actually get the 15kw signal at night 30% of the time, in 60's. They go to 1mw and I should be 100% at any antenna orientation. Too bad KSLA only went for 166kw, when I aim WNW for KETK, KFXK, KYTX, I still pull KTBS, KPXJ, KMSS but KSLA often requires NNE pointing.

Hey Mobetta, glad to hear you're bringing 'em in on that 4228. I wish I'd put mine up a long time ago. I actually believe the quality of OTA HD on FOX for football is better than the quality of ESPN and NFL Network on Dish's network.

Great reception on everything. And by far they had the best price when factoring shipping into the total cost.

Shipping $16.75 to anywhere in Continental US

Other places were equal or higher on the antenna and 2 to 3 times as high on shipping.

Mick61

Mobetta,

No, I never have any problems with FOX. However, my signal strength will sometimes go down from 92-93 to 82-83...which is what it is doing right now. And, since you're a little farther away in Blevins, and only getting a signal strength in the 70's, I would assume when mine goes down into the 80's, you may not have enough signal strength to pull it in.

Anybody else noticed FOX's signal strength fluctuating???

I live 5 miles south of Marion LA towards Farmerville. I have purchased a Channel master 4228 and its on the way. I held back on purchasing the 7777 pre-amp and rotor to see what I could pull in without pre-amp. My question is this; In the old analog days you had to have a "descent" picture before the amp would do any good.
Is this true with digital? Should I at least get a weak digital signal for a pre-amp to be helpful? I realize digital is not snowy; Its either there or its not but before I purchased a pre-amp and rotor I was trying to make sure I could receive "something" before I spent another 140 dollars. Channel 10 will not be a problem but I worry about Channel 8 digital signal out of Monroe. It is VHF and weak from what I understand. Should I go ahead and purchase the pre-amp or is what I am doing feasible? My antenna will be approx. 20-25 feet up. Do yall think Shreveport is feasible from here? I live approx 100 miles by highway from Shreveport.
I have a dishnetworK 622 HD DVR. I love HD but I want the OTA channels.

More HD problems in Shreveport - Bossier:

PBS stopped coming in on 24.5. I was pissed. I tried playing with my antenna (not THAT antenna...the one in the attic!) Then I re-scanned and it has been re-mapped to 25.3 (all of the PBS digitals re-mapped to 25.x.) I guess I need to call their engineer one of these days.

Well I feel ignored or maybe no one is interested or maybe its just the holidays! I have purchased a channel master spartan 3 model 3041 DSB from lowes for 30 bucks. I am still waiting on my 4228 but I took a yagi off the end of a old combo antenna mounted on a 20' telescopic pole and I am picking up digital Monroe and El Dorado Arkansas with no problem. Yesterday I picked up 3 shreveport channels with 60+ signal but today they are not coming in. This yagi is about 4 foot long and I have the 3041 pre amp on it. Will the 4228 channel master have a lot more gain than this old 10 year old yagi? Do you think shreveport is possible or was that just "skip" yesterday? Shreveport actually tries to come in at times times . Monroe is 30 miles away, Eldorado is 15 miles away in opposite directions but I pick up both easily without moving antenna. Shreveport is probably 70 miles max. Thoughts or suggestions are welcomed and needed fron you pros!!!!!!!!!! My zip code is 71260. Smack,

Sounds like YOU are the pro! Go to:

http://antennaweb.org

Click on find an antenna, enter your address (leave off name, phone, email - not needed.) That will give you compass headings, distances, frequencies, a street-level map and you can select digital only or both.

I use a 4-bay bow tie in my attic and I get most of Shreveport channels okay but that's it.

YMMV.

The 4228 range is 60 miles. I don't get a huge boost with my amp. Perhaps 10%.

For the directions of where to aim go to www.antennaweb.org for your DMA.

As for South of Marion, LA to Mooringsport (where most Shreveport towers are) looks to be about 265 degrees on your compass.

I am sure there will be more gain on the 4228. You are about 100 miles from the Shreveport towers. That is going to be tough to get a consistent reliable signal with anything you use. You might get bounce occasionally depending on weather, but I wouldn't rely on the Shreveport stations.

On a side note, KTAL is still not back to HD. They have 4 hours to fix it to watch the ball drop.

The antenna website does not show shreveport as possibility from Marion so it does not give the compass coordinates. It also does not show me to pickup digital channel 7 out of monroe at my address but it booms in at 80+ with this yagi. Here is whats weird; I realize that the monroe digital station is VHF but when i point this yagi northwest instead of southeast towards monroe I get a stronger signal off the back side of this uhf yagi! What goes here? The signal difference is 82 compared to 74 on my dish 622 HD receiver. The only stations I pickup right now is digital PBS out of el dorado (tower in huttig 15 miles away max) and digital 8 out of Monroe. Both of them are fine. I will get NBC easily when they go live. I still hope to pickup shreveport with 4228; just hoping. I got shreveport strong the first time I hooked up my OTA; must have been tropo. day. How accurate is that tropo site because it shows wednesday as a marginal day. This is Sugar bowl day and I would love to get 33 out of Shreveport in HDTV. Oh well, my 4228 will be up by then so we will see.

The antenna website does not show shreveport as possibility from Marion so it does not give the compass coordinates.

On the address entry page, under options, enter 100 feet for your antenna height. This actually gives a more accurate representation of what you can receive. If you still don't see any Shreveport stations, try 1000 feet.

It's possible that the reflector elements of the yagi are acting as radiating elements at VHF frequencies. This is not uncommon, especially with 8-bay antennas like the 4228. The 4228 will receive VHF-high very well out the back side, as the screen radiates at VHF frequencies. Both sides of the screen have to electrically tied together for this to work.

Has anyone tried the Antennas Direct DB8? It boasts a 100 degree angle of reception as compared with the 11 degrees of the 4228. I'm struggling with getting all of my digital channels to come in. I can get 3, 12, 33, 24 but not 6.1. I'm debating switching from the lowly 4-bay.

Where in Bossier are you?

Try rotating the antenna a little to the right to pull in 6.1. I get it. Well, now that I check, 6.1 is gone!! LOL.

But I have consistently gotten it since installing the 4228 until today.

I would wait before replacing the antenna either way. KTAL is low power right now. Once they get their shiite together, they will be full power in digital which should happen any time now.

I'm guessing you Texarkana guys are having to use amplified external antennas on poles eh?

I'm over in Nash in a valley area, in a duplex. I don't think they'd like me throwing a big UHF antenna on the roof...

My grandfather used to be a radio operator and had a 100ft. antenna with a license. It's in pieces in a warehouse right now but if I move into a house at some point may get it to max legal height.

Any of you using Dish HD and what local HD (if any) can you pull from it? I have the Bronze package now, but don't subscribe to locals.

Greenacres Place. Antennaweb says 299 degrees for most channels, 321 for 6.1 That's virtually no difference, but I rotated it a little to the right to hit 320. I still get everything else but not 6.1. I see that you aren't getting it either right now and I really should wait for full power to spend $111 on the DB8.

Bruno,

I live in the Sugar Hill area of Texarkana, on the Arkansas side...at the bottom of a hill. Yes, I am using an amplified antenna on an external mast. My antenna is a Channel Master 4228, with a Channel Master 7775 pre-amp, on a 20' mast. I got Bradie Brackman at Audio Video Concepts to install it. I was thinking I'd probably need to put mine on a 30' mast...but Bradie and I decided to try it at 20' first, just to see what I could pick up. We installed the mast on the north side of my house, which is the back, and have it pointing at 173-degrees...and, at 20' it really doesn't even clear the center of my house. I would check with them and see what Bradie tells you, because he told me he put a CM4228 in someone's attic in my area, and they were pulling in the Shreveport stations through the attic.

I have a Dish ViP622 receiver, and I'm getting an 88-92 signal strength on all Shreveport stations (except KTAL of course) at night, but I'm only getting a 78-84 signal strength in the daytime. However, that has been plenty as I got to watch all the games this past weekend in HD...except the Sunday night game on NBC (KTAL). You said you didn't subscribe to locals...you don't need them if you put up an antenna to pull in the HD feeds from Shreveport. And, as soon as KTAL comes on line, I'll be stopping my subcription for the locals from Dish as well.

Ronald_Jeremy
01-02-07, 10:28 AM
Bad part is that if you cancel your locals, you won't have any guide data for your HD locals. That makes it kind of tough to schedule recordings.

Steve, you should be able to pick it up fine once it comes back. I am still getting no signal on KTAL. They acknowledged it is down and can't tell when it will be back up.

How high is your antenna? Mine is probably 20 feet up.

Mick61

Hey Ronald, good point about the guide data on the locals...I didn't think about that. So, what you're saying is, for example, 3.1 is showing the guide data for the SD Ch 3 local from the Dish local programming guide...and if I got rid of it, nothing would show in the 3.1 guide data. It would just show something similar to "local HD programming" or something like that, as it does for 3.2 and 3.3.

Yep...

There are other alternatives. If you have a Dish1000 with 129W locked in just "move" to Chicago or Atlanta and watch those HD locals too.

If you are in a local market that has local channels you cannot get atlanta or chicago etc. HD. You must subscribe to your local market with dish networl whether they are broadcasting in HD or SD. If I am wrong and I hope I am please show me the light and tell me how to get these network affiliates broadcasting in HD. I do have a HD 622 receiver looking at 110,119, and 129. Never say never... Take the New Orleans area for example. No NBC-HD is available even OTA or Cox Cable. It's called "moving". Simply move your service address to Chicago and you'll have the locals in HD from 129W from Chicago. Your billing address stays the same. All it takes it a quick 10 minute phone call, depending on hold times. Now to be fair I would watch the local HD's that are provided to you OTA, but the ones that are missing I would watch them from the satellite.

When you have no other choice you do what you gotta do....

Re-read his post smackman. He said "move" to Chicago. ;)

Mick, you are correct.

If you don't subscribe to digital locals, the OTA channels will read "Digital Programming".

Unlike regular HD receivers, Dish gets the guide data from the satellite. It is a way to force you to sub the local package.

Remember to be fair... if the station went to all the trouble and expense to provide you with an OTA HD signal then by all means watch it. It will probably be a little better quality anyways since it doesn't go through another "middle man". If you don't have an OTA HD signal from a network you need then by all means use other methods to obtain it.

For those of you that are interested, KTVE, the NBC affiliate in El Dorado/Monroe, went full power digital at 8PM tonight. It's currently in SD, but they will be in HD by the weekend. They had some issues with their microwave. The signal should be received well to Minden with a good antenna and preamp. We already concluded that you aren't in any of the HD LiL spotbeams on 110 so those are all a no go. But everything on 129W is free game since those are ALL CONUS beams, not spotbeams.

Don't be confused with spotbeams. Imagine you stand a few feet back from a globe and shine a big flashlight on the center of the US. It "lights" up the whole US. Now take a smaller very focused tight beam flashlight and shine it on the US. You'll see how it only "lights" up one or two states. This is exactly the difference between spotbeamed and conus beams. And no, they don't do this to stop people from getting the channels out of market, they "re-use" the same frequency a few states over and do this several times with each beam.

It's not too good to be true... how do you think several people are watching NBC-HD in New Orleans when WDSU doesn't have an HD signal on satellite, Cox Cable, or even an OTA signal. Zero WDSU HD in New Orleans...but I know of about 5 people that are enjoying NBC HD today in the N.O. DMA.

So, smackman, from your post, I assume you "moved" to Chicago??? Any problems? How long did it take them to do it? I sure would like to get the 'Boys in HD tomorrow night...and KTAL doesn't have clue now how long it will take them to get up and going.

haley,

Those are good screens of KTVE...that analog photo looks horrible! Is the reception bad because it was early in the morning? I must say that their signal looks a lot better now than it did when they were on a STA.... and it's actually in stereo sound....lol

Looks like it's gonna be no-telling-when before KTAL gets up and going fellows. I emailed Scott Thomas, KTAL Station Manager, today to ask for an update...and to let him know their web site still has his statement from the end of November telling us they're gonna miss their Dec 1st date, and that hopefully we'd have it up by Christmas or New Years. Here's what he said:

"Our HD testing over the last few weeks has identified the need for additional equipment. Which, of course is going to take a bit to come in. I have been unable to nail down a delivery date from our vendor. So, no on-air date as of yet. I will post something soon....

Thanks for your patience.

Maybe they could hire "Larry the Cable Guy" to GIT-ER-DONE!

The antenna is at 290 deg, which allows me to see the Little Rock locals (except KETS-DT) plus KTVE-DT. I used to aim the antenna at the best reception for (cough, cough) KWBF analog---that way i had max signal from the LR locals.

Here are my signal levels @ 290 deg (NW) RF channels are shown
_________________________________________________________
RS Accurian: (near p/a splitter) Dish 811: (100ft from splitter, preamp)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KETS-5 (LR) below 50%-No lock at that location on both boxes
KARK-32 (LR) 73% 69%
KATV-22 (LR) 91% 90%
KTVE-27(EL) 70% 67%
KTHV-12 (LR) 76% 73%
KLRT-30 (LR) 70% 67%
KASN-39(LR) 90% 89%

KTVE-DT is strong enough to come in on the side lobes of the 4228 antenna. My Little Rock locals are lower in strengh but as long as the signals stay in the 65%+ range, that is not a problem for me.

BTW, I used a WinTV (NTSC) card, DScaler 4.1.15 and my RS Accurian box for digital to do the screen caps. I'm still stuck with the E* 811 box in the living room. Speaking of which, the channel guide info if it does not show up, do a hard reboot (unplug the rx) and it will add KTVE info to the Dish channel guide.

What to take from this: HD viewers in Monticello, Dumas, McGehee, and Warren, AR will have access to NBC-HD even when antenna is pointed towards stations in the LR DMA.

I may move to Chicago for a day so I can watch both games and hopefully the Cowboys get stampeded!! :D

I live maybe 15 miles from the KTVE transmitter. I can pull in a 100+ signal with ease here 5 miles south of Marion. The digital pictures are not as quality as KETZ digital transmissions from the same tower. Its 100% better than it was and a 1000% better than dish local picture but its definitely not totally clear. I have a 55" mistubishi rear projection TV that gets great HD pictures off my 622 receiver and channel 8 out of monroe and KLTM out of monroe;comparing digital transmission not HD KTVE is not as clear. Just being honest.

My 622 HD receiver refuses to lock in on a PBS station out of Monroe, Louisiana. The signal is above 65 but it will not lock it in. My TV tuner locks it in with no problems locking in and this station never pixalates. Actually, This PBS channel on 19.5 has the best HD picture quality of all my OTA channels broadcasting in HD.
What goes here? Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. :)

Don't get the spotbeam numbers and the transponder numbers confused. They are not the same. One spotbeam number can have multiple transponders.

Atlanta HD's
6365 - WSB - EchoStar5 129W TP 04 ConUS beam
6366 - WGCL - EchoStar5 129W TP 04 ConUS beam
6367 - WXIA - EchoStar5 129W TP 04 ConUS beam
6368 - WAGA - EchoStar5 129W TP 04 ConUS beam

Atlanta SD's
8300 - WSB - EchoStar10 110W TP 20 Spotbeam 06 from Mount Jackson
8301 - WGCL - EchoStar10 110W TP 20 Spotbeam 06 from Mount Jackson
8302 - WXIA - EchoStar10 110W TP 20 Spotbeam 06 from Mount Jackson
8303 - WAGA - EchoStar10 110W TP 20 Spotbeam 06 from Mount Jackson
8304 - WATL - EchoStar10 110W TP 20 Spotbeam 06 from Mount Jackson
....and so on.

Transponder 20 on Spotbeam 06
Now find Spotbeam 06 on this map. See how it is over Georgia?
http://ekb.dbstalk.com/E10spots/e10spots.pdf

Or you can narrow it down and say "only show me the spotbeams with transponder 20". http://ekb.dbstalk.com/E10spots/e10t20.pdf

According to the spotbeam map. You are probably in spotbeam 15. You already said you can get spotbeam 16(Houston, TX) and spotbeam 21 (Dallas,TX). So based on those estimates I bet you can't see spotbeam 12 or spotbeam 11. Now lets look at what Spotbeam 15 contains:

7015 - KTBS - EchoStar10 110W TP 27 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
7016 - KSLA - EchoStar10 110W TP 27 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
7017 - KTAL - EchoStar10 110W TP 27 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
7018 - KMSS - EchoStar10 110W TP 27 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
7019 - KSHV - EchoStar10 110W TP 27 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
7021 - KLTS - EchoStar10 110W TP 27 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
7809 - KAQY - EchoStar10 110W TP 27 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
7810 - KNOE - EchoStar10 110W TP 27 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
7811 - KTVE - EchoStar10 110W TP 27 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
7812 - KARD - EchoStar10 110W TP 27 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
7813 - KEJB - EchoStar10 110W TP 27 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
7814 - KLTM - EchoStar10 110W TP 27 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
7815 - KMCT - EchoStar10 110W TP 27 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels

9350 - KATV - EchoStar10 110W TP 18 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
9351 - KTHV - EchoStar10 110W TP 18 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
9352 - KARK - EchoStar10 110W TP 18 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
9353 - KLRT - EchoStar10 110W TP 18 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
9354 - KWBF - EchoStar10 110W TP 18 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
9355 - KASN - EchoStar10 110W TP 18 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
9356 - KETS - EchoStar10 110W TP 18 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
9357 - KVTN - EchoStar10 110W TP 18 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels
9358 - KKYK - EchoStar10 110W TP 18 Spotbeam 15 from New Braunfels

See how Spotbeam contains transponder 18 and transponder 27.

Just for kicks if you want to see if you can see Spotbeam 11 or 12 here's what they contain:

Spotbeam 11 - TP 26, TP 31, TP 29
Spotbeam 12 - TP 23, TP 25

I'm around Lafayette with E* & and looking to "move" for HD broadcast channels. I don't think the Houston spot beam will work for me. Any suggestions?

No NASCAR on NBC this year. FOX has the early season races (all Daytona 500's, not the alternating like in previous years), TNT mid-season, and ESPN/ABC the last third. The chase races (starting in Sept) will be aired on local ABC stations under the ESPN on ABC brand.

Hi, my name is Casey and I have a major problem. I have a Samsung LCD and have tried 3 antennas and still cannot get 12.1. I think that it is the tv. On 12.1 I get a large green box on the right side of the screen and the picture crammed into the left side of the screen. The Superbowl is coming and I am clueless. Can anyone help? I would plug it into my satellite receiver, but the DirecTV HD DVR I have does not receive HD signals from an over the air antenna. BTW, what antenna are y'all using to pick up other markets HD broadcasts? Is it a satellite?

Steve_Smith
01-08-07, 06:32 AM
It seems more than one person are having trouble with 12.1. My reception is okay with 4 different tuners. Is it possible that your antenna is not up to the task? Try a decent UHF antenna placed as high as you can put it. Go to antennaweb.org for aiming info. Do a search for antennas.

Your DirecTV receiver should get OTA, is it an HR20? D* released an update just before Christmas and enabled the OTA tuners, mine picks up everything perfectly from South Bossier. Try 17-1 to see if that helps with your TV tuner also, 12-1 is actually on that frequency and with my old D* tuner i had to tune that in to see the signal.

NBC/KTAL is low power right now so you might want to wait till the time "if" they go full power and HD before dropping the money on a new antenna.

On a side note. KPXJ 21-01 is now in HD. I never watch it but I was surfing and it is HD. 21-02 used to be the same feed except with black bars instead of gray bars. 21-02 is still SD.

yes D* released the HR20 without OTA but the External SATA link is active and works fine for storage and D* is not going to slap a fee on external storage like E* is. They both have warts, but D* doesnt seem to make up a fee for everything like E* does. Charlie's slogan should be, "E*, we have a fee for that."

Oh, I know what you mean. Dick is prolly tracking how many times you access your guide so he can figure out if he wants to charge a "guide access fee".

Hope FIOS comes to LA to shake them up. Not only in charges but also for HD quality. Dick, Dave, and "Suddenly I need to reboot my cable modem" :p

But I am still dumbfounded by the shipping of the HR20 without OTA tuner. You guys had to buy that right? Was't it like $500 or something?

BTW,, FWIW. The fee for external storage fee is going to be a one-time enabling fee instead and not recurring!!!! LOL. It better be like $5 or I am sending my 622 back. And it will prolly get damaged on the way back!! LOL ;)

Yeah i never understood not having the tuners on by default either, but they are on now and work great. Box is $299 and if you know what to say you can get it for less. The SATA does disable the internal HD and use the external in its place so with the software the way it is now you can add storage but you can't use both at the same time, but you can buy a cpl 500 gig drives and an enclosure for less than $500 and have a terabyte to play with. DBSTalk has a lot of people doing things like that now.
