View Full Version : LG LST-3510A DVI/DVD/HDTV Impressions
mission313 04-20-05, 04:32 PM Along the same lines will the RGB output work with a standard non-hd vga device such as a monitor or an older projector that is native 1028x728? It says it puts out 720P 1280x720 in the RGB will my vga device read this or do I have to keep my Nextvision N6 and go from component to vga to transcode the data. I hope not I am not happy with the N6 at all.

Thanks, but can those units compare in video quality? Have you ever heard of anybody getting a LST-3510A to output upscaled DVD via the db15? Surely, someone must have been successful by now. LG said the unit could do it. May the video police sit in my house every night to watch a few movies with me. Heck, I'll buy the popcorn.
iggymama 04-27-05, 07:36 PM I find it hard to believe LG told you the 3510 would output HD thru the RGB output, when the manual says:
"RGB signal is NOT OUTPUT through the “RGB OUT” jack during playing back a DVD which copy protection signals are recorded. We recommend that you use component video connection and 480p or 480i resolution."
You can probably get a decent picture in 480i thru component (but apparently not RGB) from a DVD, because they don't want you to make copies of DVDs. Welcome to the copy-protection war! SUX!
Does the 3510 have the 4th generation HD tuner that the 4200 has? If so then why not pay a little bit more and have an upconverting DVD player via DVI and just use one DVI cable to the TV?
Bottom line for me though is whether the 3510 has the same innerds for OTA HD reception as the 4200 has.
Jim1348 05-01-05, 01:47 AM I just saw one of these this weekend. Is this still the only combination HDTV tuner and DVD player? I have seen this for about $399 at Circuit City and Best Buy, but the local Best Buy had open box at $329.99. Or I see that Ebay has some for about $250 (BUY NOW price).

I think it is the combo DVD player and HD tuner. I also think it has the ability to be a DVI switch of sorts as I think you can connect a DVI device to it and it will do a patch through for that device. I could be very wrong.
$250 sounds awesome but I don't know if those Ebay items are 100% safe.

This is the only HDTV STB/DVD Player tuner I am aware of. So they have not gone down in price. I paid waht CC is asking about 1 year ago. You can also try ebay

Yah I agree. This guide does not let you go to the channel by selecting it from the guide. It's just for info not for browsing unlike the guides on boxes from Satelite and Cable providers. It also has the no info too much in my opinion

Yeah the unit could output scaled DVD thru the dB15 but only in the first incarnations of the firmware. Based on reading this forum people that bought the unit before Dec 04 had that firmware. After that LG updated the firmware to close the loop to comply with what is mandated by the DVD forum rules. So your only solution is to find a way to revert the firmware or find out what the first firmware is buy one of those units (ebay maybe)
My LST-3510A is sitting around collecting dust because it will only upscale DVDs via the DVI. My projector doesn't have no stinking DVI. Anybody want to trade for an older, pre Dec. '04, unit if you're looking for the model like mine? Oh yeah, the LG SC rep said the unit CAN upscale DVD's via RGBHV but has been internally switched off. Maybe we can set up a swap meet for those who need DVI and those who want RGBHV?
xanaduguy 05-09-05, 11:36 PM Not to beat a Dead hose here but....
I have an X1 and I would like to get the LST-3510 since we decided to get rid of our cable provider and go with OTA HDTV broadcasts. I just want to be absolutely sure that I cant upconvert to 1080i my DVD's on the RGB or component Video out since my X1 only has DB15(RGB)/ component video inputs(adapter)
Any info would be cool!!

gonnapena 06-11-05, 06:16 PM Can someone post a link to a hack or firmware upgrade for this DVD player? I have an Infocus X1 and I want to be able to get 1080 over component or VGA. I can set the LG player using component video to the infocus component to vga adapter. It even says 1080i on the LG unit, but I'm not sure if I am really getting 1080. Can anyone help? How would I know?
Also, if you have the firmware or hack link please post it here.
If someone was to borrow my LG LST-3510A and they somehow broke the HDCP part that protects me from viewing my own personal store bought DVD's in 1080i or 720p via the RGBHV ports on my video projector, I don't know what I would ever do.
Maybe I could help the person, that borrowed it. from feeling bad by giving them a gift? Does anyone know of anybody that would want to borrow my LST-3510? WINK, WINK...NUDGE, NUDGE.
My Bro checked with the author of the crack that allowed his LG model DV-7832 DVD player to upscale 720p and 1080i through the component port.
We were hopeful that he could do the same for the LG-3510A. No dice.
Unless someone can get their hands on the source code for the file it is REALLY doubtfull that you will see component/RGB upscaling through this unit.
I truly wish someone would prove me wrong on this.
TigerAspect 06-13-05, 11:27 AM Regarding the OTA tuner section on the LST-3510A:
I just ordered the LST-4200A at a good price for OTA use.
Are the tuners the same/very similar, and should I expect the
great PQ in my 4200A that the 3510A provides? Thanks.

Robert_Lopez 06-13-05, 10:19 PM A few things I noticed about the LG LST-3510a:
1. Channel changing takes about 5 seconds and suffers flickering before locking onto a signal.
2. HD tuner not any better than the US Digital.
3. DVD player inferior to my Denon DVM-1815.
Very disappointing.
Agree with last post. I have the lst-3510a. It's BAD.
It was OK when I didn't have anything to compare to, but now I have have Samsung t451 and the Samsung DVD upconverter. The LST-3510a is very slow changing channels. And worse, it's supposed to upconvert but it's horrible on DVD's compared to Samsung. And finally, setting the output format is a royal pain and it doesn't rememder the DVD setting!
Since I have 2 TV's in different locations, I may also get the USDIGITAL and toss the LG!!!
kelliot 06-19-05, 07:47 PM Where is TO? Canada?
Do you get HD from the cable input (as opposed to the OTA antenna) on your 3510? What channels?
TO = Thousand Oaks, CA
I get HD on my LST-3410A. Its QAM.
So, has anyone ever heard of anybody(real or imagined) that has seen a LG LST-3510a put out a 1080i or 720P DVD signal into a analog(RGBHV) input? I'm just curious to know how them thar Pirates view a DVD, AAARRRRRR! I sure am glad that my LST-3510 protects me from viewing my store bought DVD's in that Satanic High Definition from it's VGA output. Thank goodness for macrovision!
I got a new LST-3510 a few days ago. The appeal was having an HD receiver and DVD player in one unit. I now notice some interference showing on my screen, little waves on the picture that move from the lower left corner to the upper right corner. I have it hooked up on component and resolution at 1081i. These little waves both show when displaying HD and playing a DVD.
I tried a different antenna with no improvement. I then hooked up a different HD receiver to the same antenna - rock solid with no interference. Could the LST-3510 have some sort of shielding problem? If not for this one issue, I'd like to keep it. Has anyone seen this with their units?

Can you explain the reason why a Samsung T451 a superior ATSC/QAM tuner compare to LG LST-3510a?
is the GUI better?
is the channel switching faster?
does it grabl/hold channel better?
is the output pix superior?
I like to hear a reason what make you think so! thx!

Yes, I see it on mine, only the waves come from right to left. I've not done any troubleshooting on it yet. My setup is:
DVI output/Variable 2 scan rate
absolutic 09-18-05, 09:40 PM I have the LG box (I run it over the DVI cable) and I think the quality of QAM reception is excellent. The only thing I wish I could delete sub-channels, and not the whole channels together.
I have one that will randomly, and I do mean randomly trip the "copy protected content" message on the RGB port. Any particular title will trip 20% of the time. If it does trip, a quick flip to the tuner mode and back will let the disc play. The only real problem with this is the play continues at the start of the primary title on the DVD.
This unit was manufactured March 2005, I'll live with the quirks since I got a _great_ deal on it.

Summit HDTV - Thanks for the response. I'm glad I'm not seeing things. If you ever get around to troubleshooting this, I'd be interested in any results. As it is, I've not found any setting that eliminate these "waves". It might be some sort of external interference that is causing it. I have it hooked up to a widescreen CRT display and wonder if CRTs are susceptible to this type of interference.

Poonkla 10-08-05, 01:25 AM Got mine today at Best Buy. It was open box, but I got it with remote (which I just found out is the WRONG one. It's an LG DVD player remote, so it controls the DVD part fine, but not the HD part). I paid $185 open box! It was marked $229 open box, but I was buying an antennae from them (Terk HDTVi which works AWESOME) and some $9.99 superbit DVDs :)
I watched the first Firefly disc, and it looks great over DVI with 1080i. I need a universal remote anyway. That logitech 880 looks sweet....
gonnapena 10-23-05, 01:02 AM I also got mine sub $250. Unit does not work that good. Slow in changing channels. Although, HDTV looks great on it. The DVD player functions correctly but I am having the same trouble everyone else is with copyrighted material. If someone had a hack or older version of the firmware, this thing would rock FOR THE PRICE. Pick one up at Best Buy and check it out. If you do have an older version of the firmware or a hack that works for this unit please post a link here. Thanks!!!
flyingvee 10-23-05, 01:44 PM just got my open box at bb yesterday. must be old firmware, no problem upconverting dvds over component. need to try rgb.
My problem is that the dang thing won't display HD channel 2-1 properly. It will do 2-2, and every other HD channel, but for me, 2-1 is CBS HD. Other features are nice (duh,) but would be nice to get all networks in HD also.
Thanks.

A little more info will help.
Is 2-1 the DESIGNATION for that CBS HD channel? Is this through an OTA antenna connection, or through Cable(CLear QAM)?
The reason I ask is:
1. If it is through cable, they may be having problems with 2-1, and not the others. I would check either with your cable co, or others in your area in the LOCAL HDTV Thread to see if it is the cable co's. problem.
2. If it is OTA, then it may be your local CBS problem, OR you are 2-1 as the DTV channel, but it has a different designation OTA. In my local area(Pittsburgh), my local CBS channel is also 2-1, BUT OTA it is designated as channel 25(UHF), and the REMAPPED to 2-1 on the DTV channel lineup. Make sure you know what the VHF/UHF designation is for that channel. So in order to get CBS for me, I would input 25-1 on my LG LST-4200A on DTV, and it re-maps to 2-1.

Assuming it's OTA and it's KGAN CBS from Cedar Rapids, access it by the actual channel 51, then save it in the channel list and it should then be available. You may have to use 51 to access it directly. For some reason, accessing 2 directly is disabled on the 3510a.
flyingvee 10-24-05, 01:16 PM Sorry - ok. It is KGAN-DT, and unfortuneately, the problem manifests itself either OTA or via cable/QAM. I thought perhaps the station had a problem, but upon reconnecting my Sammy 165, 2-1 comes in fine.
cpcat - since it is also corrupt on channel 105-7 (where my cable company puts it), problem must be something in the local signal that somehow gives the LG a problem. Right?
STEELERS - guess I wasn't clear enough. I can access 2-1; it is automatically remaped by the LG from 51. but the picture I receive is not really watchable - the picture is there, but there is a mosaic of translucent green, purple, and pink blocks overlaying the top 2/3 of the image, then a strip of normal picture, then the lower balance of the picture has smaller corrupt blocks.
I have tried all output resolutions; problem exists when output is S-video, component, RGB, or DVI. No difference that I could tell. I have the newer firmware, with dvd output disabled over rgb, but upscaled over component. Dunno - LG service rep on the phone, asked if it was a mosaic, etc, then said "Never ran into that before." Kinda suspicious, but she told me to return it, and assured me that the next one would be fine. I'll see, let you know.
flyingvee 10-28-05, 12:04 PM FWIMC - update. had unit boxed up to return, and then read a post on HDTV local reception forum - it appears local CBS affiliate had done "some changes" a couple monthes ago. A fellow forum menu had the same scrambling, had been trying to get a solution from KGAN - then Wednesday nite, the member posted that KGAN had made some more changes, and fixed the problem.
Unpacked, reconnected mine, and it works!!! Still wish the unit was handier switching display formats, but it still looks good when its working. :)

flyingvee 10-28-05, 01:38 PM Still having a very hard time going between full screen 16x9 and pillarbox for SD sources. Especially with dvds. I'm running 16x9, and getting a dvd of a tv show to properly display in 4x3 pillarbox format is fairly difficult. There should be a simple way to do this - I am willing to assume there is, but I have not found it. Both the setup menu and the ratio button have a very circumscribed number of choices when dvds are played - letterbox, crop, and squeezed. That is not what the manual describes, which is fine, but since the manual shows other choices that don't exist, I am left with trial and error. Likewise, when I go back to true 16x9 hd, the display often is pillarboxed/letter box.
I am probably just spoiled by my Samsung 165 - I like having 2 choices at one button - pillarbox or full. The "ratio" button on the LG do that.
anakinmoonwalker 11-01-05, 10:44 PM I'm not sure if this is just a glitch with my partciular player or if it is a software error but i have found that after the unit has been unplugged it will upconvert the first dvd inserted regardless of copyright, even through the component cables. The player must be unplugged while it is on, this glitch does not work if the unit is unplugged from standby.
jmresch 11-02-05, 12:51 AM Yes, I see it on mine, only the waves come from right to left. I've not done any troubleshooting on it yet. My setup is:

I also have the LST-3510A and notice a very slight pink wave scanning from right to left across the screen about once every 2 seconds when the screen is black/dark. I use the DVI output at 1080i. I haven't figured out a way to get rid of it.
Also, does anyone know a way to delete sub-channels? This seems like a very basic feature that many people would want with stations broadcasting garbage/downconverts on their subchannels.
absolutic 11-02-05, 02:57 AM I guess we are out of luck with deleting subchannels. I am annoyed by this problem, especially since I am using my 3510a as a QAM tuner only and I have to go through tons of audio-only subchannels to find one or two video channels within the same subset.
I've heard but I have not confirmed that the 4200a model lets you do it. I am actually also curious if Samsung SIRT451 can delete the subchannels. You can pick up these SIRT451 under $150 I guess from refurbdepot.....

Thank you for pointing it out. What channels would we miss in 125 to 135 range? Or is it hard to say?
What channels would we miss in 125 to 135 range? Or is it hard to say?
That would vary by cable locality. There is no uniform assignment of stations to channels - plus the cable companies tend to move stations around. So even if there is nothing that you are interested in 126-135 today - it may change tomorrow.

I need to know if the DVD portion of the unit now has a "hack or Firmware upgrade"available
to enable 1080i component output on the 3510A. I have searched AVS and have not found any info. Please help!! Thanks in Advance.

There is no "hack or firmware upgrade" that I know of. To the best of my knowledge, LG has stopped production on this unit and will no be upgrading the firmware in the future. Sorry.
gonnapena 11-25-05, 08:22 AM Someone needs to find a hack for this unit. It used to allow HD signals over component. Now, the new firmware does not allow it. That sucks. I, too, do not have DVI or HDMI on my TV, so I am stuck not watching in best quality. Someone crack this. All of us 3510 owners are begging you. There's more and more owners now that this thing is being discounted.
but my Toshiba 61HX70 only has 1080i component inputs.
I don't believe that this is true. Those are analog component inputs that will accept 480i, 480p and 1080i.

I just purchased an open box LST-3510A from best buy but it didn't come with a remote. Ordering a replacement remote is no problem but I want to make sure the unit does what I need first. After reading and re-reading all the available info I am still confused by what the remote's ratio button would do.
I'm using an InFocus X1 projector with component (YPbYr) input but which I want to leave in 4:3 mode. That's the issue mainly, that I'm sending a 1080i signal to a 4:3 display.
So... I'm hoping that this tuner can letter box and crop appropriately, wasting no more screen space than necessary while still never distorting the image. If viewing a 1080i broadcast, it would need to add black bars to the top and bottom when being sent out to my 4:3 display. When viewing pillar-boxed 1080i broadcasts, I'd like the center of the 16:9 image to be blown up and cover all of the 4:3 display, cropping off only the broadcasted black bars on the left and right sides. That way, 4:3 content (broadcast pillarboxed in 16:9) like the nightly news, would use the entire display while shows shot in 16:9 HD would be properly letterboxed.
Whew, I hope that is clear. Is this how the 3510A works? If so, I'll go ahead and order the replacement remote.
(I'd check for myself but the ratio adjustments aren't possible without the remote)
Edit: I guess I should contribute to the thread too. ;)
My first impression is positive. The unit was $150 off the normal price because of the missing remote and scratches on the face. It is nice that the face is a hefty aluminum plate. I was able to buff off some of the smudges and scratches which would have been permanent if made of plastic.
Reception is improved over my previous tuner, the Zenith HDV420. There are fewer momentary signal losses. I'm using a silver sensor antenna on the first floor of a massive brick house in the middle of Pittsburgh. I can now pick up all of the local stations without repositioning the antenna to eliminate signal dropouts. The HDV420 signal meeter would oscillate between full reception and around 2/3 of the reception bar. The LST-3510A doesn't seem to do this. Instead, the signal level is reported as being almost constant. I'll probably spend the next few days pondering what the exact reason for that is... ;)
turbojoe 11-28-05, 04:11 PM Thanks, Mark521 and all for your support. I just wish someone could figure this out. Is this a federal law or just a guideline to block the 1080i component output?

It's neither. It's part of the DVD license that you have to agree to make and sell DVD player. It's one of the rules that need to be followed such as region codes.
If you think things are bad now, wait til you see all the copy protection they want to put on HD-DVD.

I don't have the answer for your question, but you have all the buttons you need in order to test this on the front of the machine. All of the functions of the ratio button can be accessed by using menus and the front panel controls.
Jim1348 12-03-05, 11:39 PM I saw these on clearance locally and I thought about buying a second one. Did LG quit making these or is it just an issue of BB not carrying these anymore?
flyingvee 12-03-05, 11:53 PM dfiler - it'll come pretty close. you'll have to go thru setup a few times, but it'll work. with mine, I have even had to switch outputs modes and res a couple times, but it finally does what you want. as Bkoesgter says, just try it. all the controls are on the front. the ratio button is just a quick way of doing what you can also do in the menu. most useful button for me is the switch between dvd and hdtv.
worst aspect - no decent way to scan forward during dvd playback - i can access the feature much of the time, but whenever I'm in the middle of a long chapter and try it, I almost always end up skipping to the next chapter instead. gaack.

Ah, so the ratio button is the same as what's in the menus.
That's unfortunate as it means the player can't do what I need it to. :(
I was hoping for horizontal cropping options since my 4:3 projector can't crop. Looks like I still have no way of filling my 4:3 screen when 4:3 programming is broadcast pillar-boxed in 1080i. All it would need to do is cut off the left and right sides of the image... and I could keep sending 1080i to my 4:3 projector.
flyingvee 12-05-05, 09:48 PM have you tried "cropped" or "squeezed" - seems to me that cropped does exactly what you want. I'd try for you, but I'm now connected to a 16x9 crt, and it really does take a while to get the dang thing to be in the mode you want. Now that I finally have it there, I hate to change it. But I know I had it functioning the way you want on the in-law's 4x3 tv over Thanksgiving - I took it to their house, connected it to their tv, and then cropped (or stretched - I do forget) but somehow, I did indeed remover the pillar bars, and get the picture into the correct format.

Could you have had their 4x3 connected via 480p? Using 1080i output, there isn't a cropped or squeezed option via the menus. Aspect ratios available through the menu are: set by program, normal, wide, horizon, zoom 1, zoom 2, cinema zoom. Are you saying that the ratio button on the remote provides "cropped" or "squeezed" for 1080i output?

The cinema zoom will crop. Cinema zoom has an adjustable zoom parameter. It's a really nice feature.

The cinema zoom will crop. Cinema zoom has an adjustable zoom parameter. It's a really nice feature.Thanks. Yet the cinema zoom isn't what's needed for my 4:3 projector. It still doesn't crop pillar boxed content for display at 4:3 over 1080i. All of the ratio modes seem to require a 16:9 display.
I'm pretty convinced now... I'm forever doomed to wasting most of my projector's projectable area. I guess 1080i is only good for 4:3 displays if the display itself can crop the sides off a pillar boxed broadcast. I wonder why hdtv tuners don't support this. Is my setup really that unusual?
I have a 3510a unit that is about a year old. Is there a way to determine if it will upconvert over the component outputs. Will my Toshiba tv set indicate the input resolution? Where is the firmware information?
flyingvee 12-06-05, 02:40 PM set it to output 1080i (or 720p) - play a dvd. if it won't upconvert, you will see a warning stating that that resolution is not available over the component outputs. and no movie.

I've never seen this warning! My connection is component with 1080i output setting. All store bought DVDs have played, but I've not been able to play many dvd copies.

I checked the front display when I got home from work today. I can set it to 1080i, 720p, or 480i and it stays where I set it. The sticker on the back says November 2004.

EdThe projector can add top and bottom bars so that 16:9 content is letter boxed on my 4:3 screen. What I'm looking for is a way to use the whole screen when watching things like the nightly news... which are broadcast in 16:9 but with 4:3 content only filling the middle portion. Since the tuner can't crop/stretch horizontally in 1080i, these broadcasts are doomed to be surrounded by black on all sides.
Are there any tuners that can do this?

I agree that the 3510A can't do exactly what you want it to do. But the Cinema zoom can fill side to side at the cost of cropping the top and bottom. I have an older Samsung SIR-T150 that may be able to do what you want. I'll check the manual (I've boxed up the unit after I got the 3510A).
Another thing that you can do, is tune in the SD channel instead of the HD channel. It won't be pillar boxed. And the original content isn't HD anyway if it's 4x3 pillar boxed.

EdCinema zoom results in a letter boxed image unless you settle for a vertically streched/distorted image which is ALSO missing the top and bottom.
Unfortunately, not all the stations in my area broadcast a digital SD (4:3) equivalent so that isn't an option either.
I'll be returning the tuner this evening... thanks for all the help though! If I ever get a 16:9 display or an 4:3 display with cropping options, I may re-buy this tuner at that point.

AFAIK, LG has discountinued this model (along with the 4200 (which has better firmware features like sub channel deletion) so getting one later might be tricky.
I have an older Samsung SIR-T150 that may be able to do what you want. I'll check the manual
OK I checked and I think it does exactly what you want. The primary reason that it does is because it acknowledges 16x9 and 4x3 TVs with different settings. From the manual:
"With a 4:3 Ratio TV or Monitor . . .
Letter Box ... Full ... Zoom :Choose this when receiving a 16:9 image and you want the wide movie format to fill the entire screen. Left and right portions of the picture are cropped, or cut."
where I removed text where the ... are. The bad news is that you must go into a setup menu to change modes - there is no A/R button on the remote like the LG.
This is strictly an ASTC tuner. Were you looking for OTA, cable, or both?

turbojoe 12-12-05, 04:58 PM Hey, Guys well I went ahead and bought the 3510A because I was getting desparate for a good HD tuner before they were all gone. The Sales Manager at BB was real nice to me and ordered a new one from another store and I received it. I works pretty good however I have a red vertical line on the left side of my screen top to bottom that is about two or three pixels wide. I have an older
Toshiba 61HX70. It appears on the ATSC tuned broadcasts and also the DVD play back. I thought you all who have more experience with this box could give me some suggestions or is this a bad box???
Also, to update you all on my request about a hack to cause the DVD part of the STB to output 1080i upconversion on component output to my Toshiba HDTV, I tried some thing I read here or somewhere. If you start the DVD player set to 1080i with the ATSC tuner in 1080i while on component out and then while it is playing quickly switch the Mode from DVD to ATSC and then back again, Presto Chango!!! The DVD is now being upconverted to 1080i and no longer stuck in 480P!!!!!! I can not believe it. My TV reacts by going doing Vertical compression on the screen which is why I wanted to upconvert anyway!!!
Praise the Lord!! Hope you all can help me with the Red Line problem. It is there almost all the time in either mode. Thanks in Advance!!!

I also have a little red line on one side of my LCD. Sometimes on some channels I have that red line and also a thin green line on the other side. Curiously, that phenomena is only when I am using the DVI input. When I am using component input with the same resolution, either 720p, or 1080i, the line disappears. And on different channels it is different. Now that is through Comcast Cable. I have not used that LG box with OTA antenna;
thats good to know, thanks

You should get a disc with overscan test patterns like AVIA and check the overscan and picture position through the 3510a. This will be academic if your set doesn't allow adjustment of position/size.

:p Of course I own AVIA disk.....unfortunately that particular LCD display I am using does not allow for overscan and picture position adjustment while through DVI input, but does allow it through all other inputs. That is no help, because DVI is the only input I have problem with (on some channels).
On the other hand it is a small 27 inch LCD that I use in the bedroom, so who cares! :)

to answer you question, yes, you should get all channels that your cousin illegally helping you to get.I really don't know the answer to this question, but if I had to guess, I'd say no you won't. It seems to me that the analog filtering of an analog signal at the curb is much different than the encryption of a digital signal. I would think that encryption is not done at the curb but at the cable company and your STB or TV will decrypt.
Ed
Kdballer29 12-17-05, 01:03 PM Yeah i know there are cable people on here. But, I don't even live here I'm just back for the holidays, I live in dorm in Raleigh and I'm almost 100% sure I will be using the OTA HDTV there since we have no choice of what kind of cable we get. I was just worndering what the capablities of the QAM were. But thanks for answering my question.
dutchfudge 12-18-05, 12:02 PM Just got my 3510a yesterday, love it so far. I am using it for qam(Comcast Basic Cable), and am getting quite a few channels.
I am not getting any guide info however. Is the PSIP info only available through OTA? Or is Comcast just not on the ball?
ALSO: Is there a way to automatically delete scrambled channels? THe only other option I see is to go into the surf list or the channel labeling to see what ch. are scrambled, then delete them(if possible).
THANKS!

You need a cable card to get guide info over QAM. You might have noticed that the 3510A does not have a cable card slot. ;) Also, BTW, Comcast isn't on the ball. :D

And also cannot delete subchannels, can only delete entire channels, which is so wrong. the 4200a I've read fixed that issue, but the 4200as are nowhere to be found
hardtime 12-19-05, 12:09 PM If any one is looking for a 3510a they have a few refurb units on flea bay with the new flash update on them I got mine ordered from Computer Geeks for 159.00 on flea bay
they are a little higher I think 169-179 I am new to this just got my Sanyo projector
last week and am hopeing the 3510a works well with it.
hardtime 12-22-05, 09:48 AM Received my lg LST_3510a from geekscom last night and it was great. I could not tell it was a rebuilt receiver. It looked new to me. Just cant beat the $159.00 price tag. Just dont like the copy protection when you play DVD,s. As long as I play a burned copy it works in the 1080 mode but a real disk it falls back to normal mode.
There shood be a way around that (flash) or something. :)
Feirstein 12-27-05, 04:03 PM I can get this unit for about $140.00. My mother in law lives out in the sticks and her fringe antenna barely gets in 5 NTSC analog channels. Is this digital tuner a good bet to hook up to her analog TV using either composite or S-video interconnects? Will it provide her decent reception in a fringe area where analog TV is barely adequate?
Richard.
hardtime 12-27-05, 07:46 PM There have been reports in other post that they are picking up and locking on to signals from 90 miles away. However they have a large antenna system. It just depends on how far and any building and hills between her and the towers. I am not a real good person to ask because i only live 7 miles from my towers. As far as the receiver i dont think you will be sorry. As far as i can tell it is the best on the market for the money.
Received my lg LST_3510a from geekscom last night and it was great.
Can you tell the build date and/or firmware version on the unit? I'm tempted to get one of these refurbs at compgeeks, but I'm wondering if these units can do the component upconversion trick or not. Still, considering that mere ATSC/QAM tuners still run in the $150 range, this player could be quite a good deal regardless.
hardtime 01-12-06, 08:33 PM they are new build date they work real good but will not play a micro dvd tru that port. You can copy the dvd and it will play great tru it. I bought the zenith dvb 318 and flashed the bios so it will play tru comp out. So far no one has com up with a fix for the 3510a. I am looking at the bin fild for the 318 to see if I can mod it with the 3510 they are the same chip set but I will have to get ahold of the 3510 bin file to edit it. Will keep you posted.
the 3510 is a great unit and it used to work tru comp out for micro encoded disk. But they change it because of the pressure from the film Co,s. Dont let anyone tell you that the chip set wont allow it. it is only in the flash.
I went ahead and order one as well from the geeks today.
While out I stopped by my local BB only to find a 3510a sitting
On a shelf in a far rear corner. It had a clearance tag on it, while talking to the clerk he
said it was a return or something, no box nor manual.
I figured I would grab it and try it out while my order ships.
The clerk was cool about this since it is not as if I am test-driving a new sealed unit.
This is a 2004 model and has NO problems up converting 1080i via component.

I bought mine (new) in March 2004 and its MP 1.91. I do not believe that mine will upconvert copy protected disks via component. My display does not easily indicate what signal rez its receiving (Panny 50phd6uy), but via the service menu I believe that my unit does not up convert. It's still a great picture.
Please note that the front display will indicate that you are outputing 720p or 1080i, but it will only output 480p via component.
Does your display indicate what rez its getting? That's the best way to tell as the LST-3510A display will lie to you.
Hmmm.. I just bought this new at CC today. Comcrap's installer didn't want to deal with rain, a tree or my crawls space, and I was in need of finally seeing HD on my new plasma, so i picked this up. I'm amazed that this is such an old model.
On my plain OTA antenna, it only worked so-so (in Pomona CA). Ran up to BB and picked up an RCA ANT 706 indoor/outdoor, amplified antenna. OMFG! WOWZERS!
Well, I'd rather be late to the show than miss it entirely... :)
rangernine 01-16-06, 01:45 AM Hi - I've had my 3510A for about a month now and I've noticed what appear to be decoder errors when the signal contains a dark scene. In some dark scenes, the tint of the entire picture seems to go greenish and get much darker than it should. This happens with both OTA and QAM signals and in both HD and SD. I haven't noticed it on DVD playback yet but I haven't used the DVD player much yet. Otherwise, the picture is great. Not sure if I should call tech support about this. Anyone else notice this with their unit?
The LG 3510A is feeding a Samsung CRT HDTV over the component outputs. I have firmware rev 1.93. When I use the Samsung without the LG as a tuner (only SD), I have not had this issue so I'm pretty sure it's an LG problem.
Thanks.

I would think this is more of a TV problem than the STB. Note that the color standard is different for 480i over component than HD (and maybe 480p) over component. It seems most TV manuals don't tell you what they do - automatic conversion or just ignore. Maybe you have a setup feature to change the color standard.
Ed
Try "Variable 1" which will cause the LG to unconvert 480i to 480p.
This happened to me with my Panny plasma for some reason. 480i input produced a green cast picture. I know it was the TV as my NEC plasma doesn't have the problem.
hudsonmike 01-16-06, 02:50 PM I have LG LST-3510a (from geeks) connected to samsung TXP-2670WH w DVI cable.
I think the Sammy upconverts everthing to 1080i. So what should I set my LG output to? (i.e. where do I want the upconversion to take place? "in the STB" or "in the TV"?)
thanks
Hooked up to Mitsi DLP 62725 via components. HD PQ is excellent and similar to the built-in ATSC tuner on the Mitsi set.
Got both 720p and 1080i DVD upconversion over components with no DVI connection. Confirmed this on the Mitsi display itself as well as the front of the 3510. Guess this means that my unit has the earlier firmware, right?
Waiting to get my DVI-HDMI cable to test out DVI.
So far so good. :)
Thought I'd try and contribute to this discussion.
Just received mine from geeks, could tell it was used (little bit of paint/shine worn off front display) but really in excellent condition overall.
Firmware is 1.92 (thought they upgraded this when they refurbed?), and it DOES upconvert EVERYTHING through component out.
Now I have crap here for HD and serious geometry TV problems, but am pretty happy with the LG as I needed a new dvd player as well.
thewarm 01-17-06, 08:34 AM I've had mine for about 3 weeks. Picked it up NIB for $149 (fleabay). The back sticker says April 2005, the setup screen says MP 1.93, 12/24/2004.
It is hooked up to a Panasonic CT32HL44 CRT through a DVI-HDMI cable. Seems to play all retail DVD's with no problem at 1080i. I did have some "skipping" issues using Ritek 4X -R media for "backups". This is strange because it plays Ritek 8X -R OK! I found some Optodisc 2X DVD-RW discs online for $17/100 that work flawlessly in the player...just take a long time to burn...
I have tried the OTA with a Zenith Silver Sensor (in Seattle, but could not get FOX which is over 20 miles away). I went back to the QAM tuner (Comcast) to watch the Hawks game Saturday, and have not switched back!
Current dilemma:
OTA = Guide and clock with "easy to understand" channel numbers, but no FOX network.
QAM = More channels, but can't get ANY info (clock, guide, station ID), and the channel #'s take a bit of getting used to.
Overall, I am very pleased with this unit for the price I paid!
flyingvee 01-17-06, 09:59 AM QAM listings will be a problem of the LG working with the cable company's psip data. Obviously, cable co is setup to make the box they rent to 99.9% of their customers list the correct channels - have no desire or real responsibility to help us moochers. :) You won't get any guide info - that comes from OTA PBS stations.

I can confirm this. My FW version is MP 1.91, Date December 2003. And it does not up convert protected material over component.
But the multiple postings above make me believe Version 1.92 does upconvert.
Now, is there a way to upgrade Version 1.91 to Version 1.92?

1. Press the "Display Format" button.
2. The front panel display will show "YPbPr" (assuming you are currently using the component output).
3. Press the "Select" button.
4. The front panel display will now show the current output resolution. You can scroll through the options using the < or > buttons to the left of the front panel display.
5. Press the "Select" button.
The instruction manual has these instructions plus a list of the available output resolution options on page 19. There is also a note that states:
"The selected resolution and output resolution may be different during playing back a DVD which copy protection signals are recorded. e.g., The output resolution is changed to 480p automatically even though the selected resolution is 1080i."
Firmware is 1.92 (thought they upgraded this when they refurbed?), and it DOES upconvert EVERYTHING through component out.
Mine is also 1.92 but it does NOT upconvert DVDs to 1080i.

i just got my unit in and the unit canNOT receive regular cable channels (i.e. NON HD channels). just want to confirm, is this the same case for all 3510 owners?
Your statement doesn't make sense. You can't distinguish between HD and non-HD. Maybe you mean digital and analog? The 3510A has a QAM tuner so it will be able to get all digital (ie HD and non-HD) channels in the clear. It does not have an analog cable tuner and so nobody is getting those.

Well I haven't mucked around with it alot, guess I'm not sure how to even be sure it is indeed 1080i, but I do not get any of the copy protection messages, and the front panel display does keep saying 1080i. Also is this even that big of an advantage, 480p vs. 1080i when your source is a dvd anyway?
I'm pretty new at this.

The front panel of the 3510A does indeed continue to display 1080i. But the TV is actually receiving a 480p picture. I think most TVs can tell you in some way what resolution they are receiving.

ed,
sorry if i mispoke. yes, what i meant is that the 3510 is able to receive HD and SD signals, however, normal analog cable it does NOT pick up like my 4200. i just wanted to make sure that this is the case for all other owners and that i do NOT have a defective product.

When mine is set in 1080i mode, my TV always receives 1080i - From all DVD's and all OTA formats.

I just got one of these, last week. It is version 1.92. I have it connected to a Panasonic CT-34WX15.
Does everyone (anyone) have these issues ?
Note . . . All these happen when connected using Component Inputs as well as DVI (to HDMI).
1. When unit is set to Variable 2. It takes about 2 seconds to go from channel to channel. During this time, the TV seems to loose connection with the UNIT and puts HDMI on the screen, like there is no input.
2. When set to 1080i DVD player expands menu screens above and below viewable aspect of the TV. This can be fixed using Apect controls, but has to be set back for viewing a 1.78:1 movie.
3. When the unit is on standby, the power LED is red. When I turn on the unit, the LED blinks and then goes out.
Another note . . . My DVD player was locking up, and my dealer gave me the PROM codes to fix this, and it worked.

harpeth 01-19-06, 03:09 PM With component video, my 3510A would show 1080i in its display but DVDs would display on-screen at 480p, as indicated by the momentary display of connection type, source, and scan rate.
Earlier this week I added a Monoprice HDMI/DVI cable, and now all the DVDs I've played since that change have upconverted to 1080i, again as displayed momentarily on-screen. These include The Hunt for Red October, The Rookie, Judgment at Nuremberg, and some Fred Astaire DVDs. I think it was Red October that previously I had noticed would run at 480p even though the LG was set at 1080i. HDMI apparently made the difference.

No. There is no DVI cable in the LST-3510a box.

I did not get a DVI cable with my order.
I ordered my unit in just to play with it check it out, my geeks order just arrived today.
Give me a few more days of play and this one maybe available if you strike out at geeks.

flyingvee 01-19-06, 11:03 PM John (harpeth) and whoever cares - I've had a 3510 for 6 monthes, saw your posts, but figured I'd go home and try again, just to be sure. Mine has the 1.92 firmware, which I think is the one that supposedly disables upscaled component. Luckily, my 3510 doesn't read this forum :) - I just checked SW Ep3 - 1080i out on 3510, thru component to my skanky Insignia hd crt - display on Insignia states that it is in 1080i mode, so it is for sure getting upscaled dvd play thru component. I sure can't promise that the rest of you will, but it indeed works on mine.
And fwiw, 1080i dvds make my VERY inferior Insignia look amazing - if BB were to feed a dedicated upscaling dvd player to their Insignias, I reckon they would double or triple sales. While the upscaled dvds only look nice on my fp crt, blown up to 11' wide, on a 30" HD set it is like looking thru a window.
I've been trying to score another off the bay for over a month now - sorry if I've been bidding against anyone, but they all go for more money than I want to spend. That said, it is a great unit. Bud - as far as your menu problem, pretty sure it is an aspect problem - the menus and settings are a bit cryptic, and do not work the way I expect them to - keep changing format and aspect, both while dvds are in, and for HD, and you should eventually get it to work the way you want. Sounds like you are in a zoom mode when you lose the menus.
Based on flyingvee's and bsandy's posts, I wonder if the eeprom change noted earlier is the one that is also helping accomplish upconversion over component under firmware version 1.92...
I have firmware 1.92, I have a Zenith TV that on its HD component input ONLY accepts 1080i, and the screen flakes out on protected DVDs. I assumed this happened because the 3510A sends out 480p/i on those DVDs. So I certainly believe those that say 1.92 does not upconvert over component.
I would like to believe there is something about version 1.92 that allows upconversion with some mods...

Jon -flyingvee- sounds like I was wrong about HDMI being the difference for upconverting. Component didn't work for me, and the $6.44 Monoprice charges for an HDMI/DVI cable was worth checking out. As I say, the different video connection seemed to enable 1080i on DVDs in my setup (Philips 30PW).

John:
If I understand you correctly, upconversion did not work for you over component, but worked fine over DVI. This is the NORMAL behavior for the 3510A. Upconversion should always work over DVI; if not your player/cable is broken in some way. Much of the discussion here is about upconversion over component. They disabled this feature at some point. Some folks are interested in getting the feature back because their HDTVs only have component inputs...
aup
flyingvee 01-20-06, 10:12 AM Yes, upconversion definitely works over DVI out on my 3510 - but it also works over component. I have not done any mods - but unit was purchased open box from local BB - can't say what previous owner did or did not do. I was disappointed, because it will NOT upconvert over RGB (nor is it supposed to.) But I hooked dvi to the Ophit convertor, connected that to my CRT fp, and picture was fine. Now the 3510 is relegated to bedroom and Insignia 30" widescreen - cheap, component in only, but for some reason, dvds do upconvert for me. No idea why the 3510 is so flaky, with such variable results for everyone. You'd THINK that a mass-produced object would have predictably consistent results. But since it works for me, I'm really not complaining.

aup,
That's correct; component connection didn't produce upconverting. I noticed in the LG manual something that someone else posted earlier here, i.e., protected DVDs will run at 480p despite what's selected on the 3510, when "copy protection signals are recorded." The DVI-to-HDMI cable made the difference in my case.

rangernine 01-21-06, 11:59 AM Try "Variable 1" which will cause the LG to unconvert 480i to 480p.
This happened to me with my Panny plasma for some reason. 480i input produced a green cast picture. I know it was the TV as my NEC plasma doesn't have the problem.
Thanks for the advice - but I can't seem to find where I can set the LG3510 output to "Variable 1". Can you please elaborate? In addition, I'm also seeing this greenish tint with some HD content as well (using 1080i output).
I still think the problem is in the 3510 - either a defective unit or the decoder is somehow not handling a mode correctly. This morning I was watching the movie "Saved!" over QAM (Showtime Too - SD but I think it comes as 480p) and there was a scene in the movie (when Pastor Skip takes Mary's mom into the closet) that caused the picture to freak out a bit and sometimes the whole picture flickered between dark and all black just during this scene. The rest of the movie was fine.
Any other suggestions?

You set the output resolution via the front panel buttons:
1. Press the "Display Format" button.
2. The front panel display will show either "YPbPr" (component), "DVI" or "RGB". You can scroll through the options via using the < or > buttons to the left of the front panel display.
3. Press the "Select" button.
4. The front panel display will now show the current output resolution. Your options are: 1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i, native, variable 1, variable 2, or variable 3. You can scroll through the options using the < or > buttons to the left of the front panel display.
5. Press the "Select" button.
The instruction manual has these instructions plus a list of the available output resolution options on page 19.
Mark521 01-21-06, 12:46 PM How can you tell what version your 3510a has? Is it in the menu? I don't remember seeing it.
You can get to the service menu via this method:
Press and hold both the "Stop" button and the "Volume +" button on the Front Panel (not the remote) for a few seconds. You may have to try it a few times, but it does work.
Your TV/monitor should then display the Service menu, mine looks like this:
Model LST3510A
S/W Version MP 1.91
Make Info. Tue Dec 30 16:09:56 2003 LG Electronics
You'll see below this a half a dozen menu items, when you are done you scroll down to "EXIT" via the down arrow button on eith the remote or the front panel and then "Select" via the remote or the front panel.

I have this problem with my 3510A and so I thought I'd give this a shot - but I couldn't because the instructions are incomplete/inaccurate. I get into the edit screen and it's ready to edit the 1st line - ie the PROM Edit line with 1 55. I can't get past this point. How do I advance to the next line? Arrows and select do not work. There is no "enter" button on the remote.
Ed
kevinbuckeye 01-22-06, 09:18 AM I reread some post in this thread. I guess even though the front of the player says 1080i that may be not what the player is sending to the tv. I have no way of seeing what resolution my tv is receiving.
Mark521 01-22-06, 03:18 PM I just completed a test using my LST-3510A (s/w version MP 1.91, Dec 30 2003) regarding "upconverting via component":
My unit will up convert unprotected DVDs, but not "copy protected" DVDs. These protected DVDs will output at 480p (or 480i if you force it). And yes the front panel display will lie to you if you are playing a protected DVD. Also note that if you play a protected DVD then switch to an unprotected DVD the player will continue to output 480p. I was able to change this by selecting 720p versus the 1080i that was previously selected. I'm sure a power off or a switch to DTV then back would probably "clear" the 480p limitation
I also checked the EEPROM codes from the Bsandy post above and my codes match the "corrected" line.
harpeth 01-22-06, 03:34 PM Ed,
I think the remote's "enter" button is the one labeled "select," at the center of the four direction keys.
harpeth 01-22-06, 03:39 PM kevinbuckeye,
My Philips TV's remote has a button labeled "status," which brings up the broadcast audio format, the connection type, and the display line rate. Status is a secondary function for this button, which is actually labeled on the button itself "exit." Maybe you have a similar button on your remote. Post the brand and model of your TV and maybe someone can tell you more.
Ed,
I think the remote's "enter" button is the one labeled "select," at the center of the four direction keys.
I did try that since I realize that is the closest thing to "enter" - but it did not do anything.

dvdguyjt 01-22-06, 10:49 PM Got mine from Comp Geeks last week.
Has 1.91 firmware.
Does NOT upconvert copy-protected DVD's over component.
How do I know?
Put in a Disney DVD.
One of my TV's is a 4x3 with a flaw. In 480p mode it will not anamorphically compress the picture. It only corrects this in 720p and 1080i.
On this TV, the DVD picture was stretched, telling me that it was 480p. If it had been 1080i, it would have been in the proper aspect ratio because the anamorphic compression would have been triggered.
Bummer........

No not try to navigate to the bottom row. The top row is the one you change. Keep pressing the up arrow, until the top row shows you the memory location you need to change.

Go the the 4th location, then just press the numbers to change. (Hold down the 1 for 'A').
I guess, it wasn't meant to be a user interface. So, it's not that elegant.

Has anyone ever tried to take the output from a 3510a to a S-Vhs tape ?
Quality ?

There are decent S-VHS decks on e Bay for < $100. I wonder how these work for a poor mans substitute for a D-Vhs. (Or at least a single Dad's D-Vhs)

NICKDAVIES 01-23-06, 12:22 PM Hi Guys,
first post, so thought I'd give some feedback on the LG LST-3510a :)
Overall, very pleased with the unit - also picked it up from Geeks. It is the 1.93 firmware - looks like all the refurbed models from there have the latest. I am connecting to an Advent 27" 4:3 HDTV bought from BestBuy about a year ago through component cables. Also to an Epson TW-10H 16:9 projector.
Plusses - pretty good reception (I get 25 channels from about 20 miles away from DC), generally intuitive system, nice (if slightly large...) multi-function control, outstanding HD picture.
Negs - remote is sometimes slightly slow to respond (have to point pretty much directly at the unit). Also have trouble with the screen ratios mentioned previously (Flyingvee, Dfiler) on the Advent. The Advent only has 2 screen ratios - 4:3 or 16:9, not a crop option. As it is a 4:3 set, using the right screen proportions for a 4:3 picture (and setting the Advent to 4:3), the 1080i and 720p pictures from the LG can only fill the screen vertically, not horizontally. This is using the widescreen ratio - normal is even narrower (which I don't quite understand!). All of the zoom functions can expand the screen in both dimensions, but as the screen is already fully filled vertically, it only needs to expand horizontally. There needs to be a 'crop' option - this option is only available when using a 480p or 480i picture. With a 16:9 picture, the Advent can be switched to 16:9 and using the widescreen option on the LG, everything is perfect and the HD picture is crystal clear.
I also can't show upconverted DVD images through component - however, I am not too phased about this as we generally watch DVDs through the projector which is only 480 lines anyway. Will be interested to see if a firmware hack surfaces, but no great hurry for me. Picture quality is sharp, colours are good and am generally happy with the DVD playback.
Finally, the DVD player can be made multi-region - I was successful using the following method.
1) Go to lgregionfree_tripod_com (AVS won't allow me to post urls at the moment - replace the underscores with dots)
2) Download 5000.zip
3) Unzip the files in a directory
4) Read the readme file - gives the broad basics of what to do. I burnt the RMTM0000 directory to a CDR using Nero (not forgetting to close the session and finalise the disc).
5) Insert the disc in the LG LST-3510a. Wait until the screen prompts you to enter a region number and choose 0.
6) The display now shows the new region number.
7) Remove the disc and choose whichever disc you wish to view!
The player now works with other regions (I have tried regions 2 and 3 as well as 1 - these regions did not work before but are now fine). I do not know if it works for 100% of discs (e.g. RCE), but have not come across a problem so far. I also wonder if the disc can be put in as many times as you like, to select different regions. I have not tried it - if it ain't broke...!
Hope that helps.

Ed
I just purchased an LG LST 3510A. It seems to have two problems:
First, it will not “hold” a station when I am hooked up to digital cable movies; that is, it switches to another station by itself after about 10-20 minutes of operation, and then continues switching to a different station every 5 minutes or so from then on. I had the unit connected to digital cable movie channels provided by my cable company, but the unit kept changing stations every 5 minutes or so, even after I removed the batteries from the remote control. So, I don’t think that the remote control is causing the problem. When the unit suddenly changes stations, it usually still indicates the old station on the front panel of the 3510A even though it suddenly displays a different station through the monitor. After that, the actual station is that projected is different than the one that is indicated on the front of the 3510A. Has anyone else had this problem or know what may cause it?
The second problem is that the V-chip does seem to not work properly. Although it will let me block an individual digital movie channel, it will not let me block a movie or a program based on content. For instance, it will not block X-rated or NC-17 content material. For me, this is the most serious problem, and by itself, makes the unit unacceptable. Has anyone else had this problem or know what may cause it?
Thanks for any suggestions.
thewarm 01-24-06, 09:58 AM I can reply to your first query. I also "occasionally" receive movie channels from Comcast thru the QAM tuner. If you are watching a flic and it drops out, try CH down/CH up to get the channel back. These broadcasts are sometimes VOD requests from another cable subscriber on your "cable node". (You may even see a movie being fast-forwarded) Hey, when you sneak into the MultiPlex movie theater you never know what movie you're going to see, so enjoy...
To get a movie channel that is encoded, a cable-card QAM tuner is required. The LST-3510A does NOT have this feature!
Hope this was of some help.
NICKDAVIES,
Where in the DC area are you? I'm expecting my 3510A soon. What type of antenna do you have setup for OTA? Thanks!
Has anyone tried returning one of these to RefurbKing ?
They're calling tomorrow night to try and solve my new issues.

the only question I have for this tuner is the fact that all I have is antenna standard def signal-- I do not have cable at all-- will this tuner rbing in the local stations an possibly pick up the hi def stations and convert it to say 720. AGAIN NO CABLE-- does this work in my situation or do I need a different tuner???
rangernine 01-24-06, 06:58 PM You set the output resolution via the front panel buttons:
Thanks Mark521. I was looking in on screen menus - forgot about the front panel.
My TV appears to only handle 480p or 1080i signals. Upconverting 480p to 1080i with the 3510, in general, looks way better than native 480p, but dark scenes don't have the green hue issue when left as 480p. The green hue issue also definitely happens with a native 720p signal (720p-1080i). I'm not sure if the problem occurs with native 1080i signals yet. Does anyone else see this problem? It seems like this is a 3510 output conversion issue except I'm not sure if it's a design flaw or if mine's busted? During bright scenes, the output looks great.

Yes the LST-3510A will tune OTA digital signals and you should be able to use your old antenna. This unit will then convert those signals to 720p if you want (or 1080i, etc).
You should also check your "Local Reception" thread for your area to see what stations are actually broadcasting DTV signals.
Good Luck...Mark

the LG DOES pick up OTA - and does an excellent job, even with crap rabbit ears. Probably better than QAM/cable hd.

I am curious how things go with refurbking as I ordered mine from the same place [computer geeks were showing item was out of stock at that time] I am expecting the unit Friday so got my fingers crossed that it shows up in one piece. Also can anyone tell me if their is any truth to the DVD up conversion trick posted earlier. Supposedly you can load the disk and after it begins to play then quick switch to the tuner and then switch back and it tricks the unit into 1080i.

This does not work for me. My firmware version is 1.91 (Dec. 2003).

It's not a design problem I don't believe, as my 3510 doesn't do it. I'd suspect it's a component sync compatibility problem. I have an external scaler, and this exact issue is mentioned in the manual as a problem due to inconsistency in some TV component inputs. Do you have the option of using DVI? Have you used other component 1080i sources with your TV without a problem?

RefurbKing Issue . . .
They're calling, tonight. I don't have high hopes. I've spent too much time with this unit, already. I want to return it and get something else. (I'm also tired of my local OTA broacasts being off 10-15% of the time.)
DVD 1080i Issue . . .
My unit has always done 1080i for DVDs. There is a difference when going out DVI, though. If you use the DVI cable your DVD menu screens will be properly aspected. If you use component, the machine zooms and crops them. So, use DVI if you can.
Also . . .
Check my previous patch note. It's time to "rip" RefurbKing for selling crap that needs to be patched (twice in my case).
In Defense of RefurbKing . . .
They have answered most of the eMail I have sent them; They have called me a few times; They always answer their phone; They try !
In Closing . . .
The upconvert that this unit gives is not worth the pain in the butt. The zoom does not properly fit a 2.35:1 screen into a 1.78:1 screen (Like Panasonics Do).

Question . . .
What color if your 3510a power light when the unit is on ?
Mine is Red, when on standby. When I turn the unit on, it blinks red and then goes off.

Where in the DC area are you? I'm expecting my 3510A soon. What type of antenna do you have setup for OTA? Thanks!
Hi Derek,
I'm down near Springfield, just near the I495. That probably makes you twice as far from the transmitter in DC - doing a search on antennaweb should show which channels you should be able to receive.
For the OTA, I'm using a Philips MANT510 indoor antenna from Walmart - it's not necessarily the best antenna, but meant I could get Fox for the playoff matches! There is an online review here:
epinions-com/content_215097118340 (you'll have to replace - with .)
Alternatively, you could try one of these reviewed here:
tv-about-com/od/accesspries/tp/topHDantenna-htm
The Silver Sensor seems to have a good reputation, but I have no experience.

Others have said the same before I believe - mine does the same, so assume that's standard!
MR.Lemley 01-25-06, 06:19 PM Thanks for the Quick response... I really don't have very high expectations either but as Long as the unit plays DVD's fine and will tune OTA I am not going to complain. I will post what I find in future post's.
spongyfungy 01-27-06, 04:48 PM I bought the LG 3510a from compgeeks and I find that it fits most of my needs. I think this unit would have been perfect if it included an analog tuner. (as well as the copy copyprotected DVI out). I have it plugged into a comcast cable and the QAM tuner gets a ton of unscrambled channels. most of them local, some ondemand stuff HBO's, and NBA league pass.
My roomate has a television, TX-R2765 DynaFlat 27" (doesn't have a DVI/HDMI input) and component looks good enough for it.
My parents have a Panasonic 42PD50U (Costco version without tuner) EDTV which has an HDMI input and I concluded that is where the 3510a should stay. Should I bother getting a DVI/HDMI cable and plugging that in to the plasma or is component good enough?
If I pay the extra $10 a month for the extra HD channels, will I be able to get discoveryHD, INHD, ESPNHD and TNTHD through this 3510a?

1. While opinions vary, component usually looks very good so I won't go through the trouble with DVI in this case.
2. No you will not be able to use your LST-3510A to get "premium HDTV" channels as you need Comcast's box to unscramble them.
spongyfungy 01-27-06, 07:33 PM I have another question. Right now I am getting NBA league pass through the 3510a.
The NBA is doing a free preview week for the package but I also subcribe to it. Am I getting it because of the free preview or because I paid for the package? I assume it's because I paid because I'm also getting HBO and I pay for that as well.
cephraim 01-27-06, 08:36 PM I was having a lot of trouble with DVD-R playback on my 1.92 system.
So, I just bought the remaining display model at my local Circuit City, in the hopes that it had 1.91.
Sure enough, it has 1.91 and ALL of my DVD-Rs, *plus* my DVD- R DLs play perfectly all the way through via component outputs.
Very pleased with the image quality also, as upscaling seems to work fine.

PhillyGuy 01-27-06, 11:56 PM Should I bother getting a DVI/HDMI cable and plugging that in to the plasma or is component good enough?
I've tried to connect to my TV with both DVI and component cables. It seems that the picture/color is slightly more vibrant, but grainy through component. I guess DVI gives you a more realistic color.
Mark521 01-28-06, 10:07 AM I have another question. Right now I am getting NBA league pass through the 3510a.

The LG LST-3510A will not "unscramble" QAM signals, and I believe (which means I could very well be wrong) that Comcast scrambles their premium content. I get the "24 hour sales pitch for NBA League Pass" (along with the On-Demand sales pitch, etc) on clear QAM also, but I delete them after I scan. I'll have to check the NBA channel to see if I'm getting the free demo.
I also subscribe to HBO and I got the HBO channel #1 (but not 2 & 3) via my LST-3510A but it disappeared back in early September (right after Deadwood finished).
You might consider checking your local area HDTV reception thread to see what others are getting as it varies significantly from area to area.

yeah I would check to see if you get the League pass channels during the demo period. There are two days left of this.
ok, i did another scan and now I'm getting indemand ppv movies. Right now I'm watching 40 year old virgin and other ondemand content. is something screwy on the cable company's part?
Thank you for your suggestion about local HDTV reception.

At least in my area Comcast doesn't seem to scramble some of their On-Demand" signals. Sometimes the signal "jumps" from sub-channel to sub-channel and you can see the user fastforward/reverse. Be forewarned, On-Demand does offer adult content so you never know what you are going to see.
Rammitinski 01-29-06, 01:32 AM A lot of times OnDemand is being picked up from your neighbors - that's probably why you see it jumping all over the place.
hudsonmike 01-31-06, 02:15 PM does anyone have any problems upconverting DVD through DVI? My TV, Samsung txp2670wh, has DVI (supposedly HDCP compliant), yet sometimes I do get the weird error message (about HDCP compliance). Sometimes it goes away, sometimes not
I got my LG from geeks a month or so ago. Havn't checked the firmware version yet. It's set to output everything at 1080i (since this is what my TV will convert to anyways)
thanks
sterno3 01-31-06, 04:53 PM Sorry if this is OT, but I have been lurking for a while now. I am looking for someting in the same class of player as this.
Does anybody know of a similar player that also has a 5.1 decoder built in (with an optical in). The HD tuner is not required, so basically I am looking for an upconverting DVD player with a built in decoder for around $150. Am I dreaming?

Check out the Panasonic S77 and S97 units. Thei both upconvert, and you can get them for around $150 on eBay.
The best thing about the Panasonic DVD players is the Auto Zoom. It will automatically zoom a 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 picture to 1.78:1 (16:9). (Same thing for a 1.33:1 (4:3) but not as desirable for a 2.35:1.) . . . This feature is of course optional.

I bought an open box from BestBuy without a remote. It was a good deal but I have been unable to find a cheap universal remote that can control it. I've looked at RCA, Philips, and OFA but with no success.
Better yet would be a cheap source for a replacement LG remote.
Thanks in advance.

I got mine Friday so far OK. I had a problem all weekend but it turned out to be a issue with my PJ and all I had to do was perform a Hard reset from the service menu. I found it was a 1.92 firmware built in 2004 and it definitely does not upconvert over component video. I also checked and found mine was set to the patch referbking told you about. I was wondering how to change it back. I relize you have explained this to other posters before but I am not quite understanding. I can change the top line to 1 55 but then I can not access the second row with the arrow keys surrounding the select button on my remote. Meaning I cannot access the 55 53 00 4A 12 00 7A FF to change it to your original 55 53 00 47 14 55 FE FF. Any help would be great. By the way I also noticed someone posting about abnormal DVD playback with a copy protected DVD. I had two disks that just started skipping through chapters. I cant be sure what caused this but I am sure I will get to the bottom of it or looking for a return. This is what I have experienced over the last couple days as I have not had a whole lot of time to play yet. And to respond about Refurbking I cant say too much but I did email them about the problem I had over the weekend and some dude did call and leave a message with some tips and said to call back if I was still having problems. Not to get too far off the topic but that is way better service than what I have been receiving from Samsung. 1 month before a service call. That is all....

The top line is not independent info. It is duplicating a field in the second (or third) line. In other words, the 1 in the first line means you are addressing the first "55" in the second line. You make all changes on that 1st line and they will appear changed on the second line. Hope this is clear to you.

I say "amen" to Refurbking's customer service. I got my 3510 from RK nearly a month ago, and found out quickly that access to the DVD player would disappear after a few minutes on the tuner side. I emailed RK's customer service about the problem. They gave me a return authorization and instructions on returning the unit for exchange. They said they'd send out a replacement upon receipt of the faulty unit.
I sent the unit back with the prepaid UPS service, and emailed RK with the tracking number. I guess they must have packed up a replacement the day after I sent the tracking number, because three days after returning the first unit, the replacement was back. It's worked perfectly. It has SW version 1.92, and requires HDMI to upconvert. I got one of those bargain Monoprice HDMI/DVI cables, which works fine, upconverting to a beautiful 1080i image.
I found RefurbKing to be extremely helpful and conscientious. Their customer service may be the best I've ever found.

I'm also using it with a CRT projector, but only tried a couple of DVDs. As you said, it does not upscale copy-protected DVDs via RGB or Component outs. I'm currently using the DVI connector with a DVI to RGB transcoder and it works for me so I did not try very long to get the RGB outs to work directly into my projector.
I tried only a few DVD's in the unit. One (Polar Express) would not even load. Others did. Since I purchased it for the HDTV tuner, I did not try very long or hard to make it work on DVDs. I use a HTPC for DVDs.
If you do figure out how to enable RGB upscaling on the LST-3510A , I too would like a PM. (I have software version 1.91)

The 3510A can only tune in unencryped channels. So I don't think there is anything you can do. But don't you have a Comcast STB that works for you?

I have it connected to a Philips LCD HDTV with components & DVI. Beautiful picture. Upconversion on DVDs are great.
Noticed something when I watch CSI. That show has a lot of these little "mini-montages" with still pictures and special effects (hope you guys know what I'm talking about.) These scenes are appearantly shot at different resolutions or formats from the rest of the show.
Whenever one of these scenes come on (and some last literally just a few seconds or so), the LG either gives me a black screen for a second or so before it can catch up with the rest of that scene, or sometimes, I would see a message come up "video format not supported." It is usually very brief, and then the regular show resumes.
I've noticed this on 1080i, 720p, native and variable display formats.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Mac The Knife 02-07-06, 04:58 PM Not really certain which montages you're talking about, but I've certainly never seen "video format not supported" while watching CSI (BTW, I always use 720p mode).

This box only gets unscrambled cable channels - not on-Demand nor premium channels. For this you'll need your Comcast box.

Upconverting DVD to 720p or 1080i over DVI with HDCP

Bad HDTVTuner ?
I have just rec'd a unit from Geeks -- it has firmaware MP 1.92, dated July 29 , 2004.
The HDTV picture is very grainy and "moving" (terrible) ..at 720p or 1080i. At 480i or 480 p , the picture is not HD, but smooth.
I have great signal strength (I even tried attentuating it -- no luck) and I am using the component output. I have another HDTV OTA tuner and the HDTV picture is awesome through component output, 720 p and 1081. I have a higher end 1280 x 720p Hd+2 DLP dark chip display and good quality cabling.
Has anyone run into this ? I called LG they said it sounded like the HDTV tuner was going bad. I am very knowledgable on OTA HDTV and just do not know what else it could be. I have not tried the DVI output, but the component out should work. Note: the DVD player 480i/p output is fine.
Thank You for any and all ideas. I may just need to return to Geeks --- their units are not covered under warranty by LG.
S Dakota 02-08-06, 07:42 PM Got an answer back from LG concerning 720P and 1080I with the RGB connection.
Heres their answer:
Thank you for inquiring of LG Electronics
In order for the DVD portion of this unit to playback the discs in 720p and
1080i, the display device has to be capable of communicating with the
receiver/player, using the HDCP protocol. It is related to the copyright
protection encoded into the disc. This protocol can only operate using a fully
digital connection, such as DVI or HDMI. The RGB connection does not have this
capability, nor does a BNC connection. By placing the resolution to 480p for
the DVDs, viewing should be possible again.
For further information or troubleshooting, you may contact us at 800-243-0000
for LG Customer Service assistance. An agent will be glad to assist you. Thank
you again for contacting LG Electronics.
Looks like I will have to use a transcoder or a Moome box.
milom98 02-08-06, 08:37 PM I just got my LG LST-3510A today from comp geeks and can't get it to play any type of DVD's at all. After putting a disc in it displays "disc reading" for a few seconds then opens the disc tray and gives a "disc error" message. I've tried several disc and it's always the same result with the only difference being the amount of time the "disc reading" prompt is displayed before it kicks it out. I did put in a audio CD and it played fine.
The unit is a
Soft Ware version MP 1.91
Make date Tue Dec 30 2003
I think I may have gotten a defective unit but any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
plumeria 02-08-06, 08:41 PM It seems that this "geeks" store is selling a bunch of defective units - that is 2 posts today.

speedracer57 02-08-06, 09:43 PM I am so glade that I did not purchase my LG from compgeeks. I went with Circuit City with a 3 year service plan -- no charge. Purchased last one on shelf.
PhillyGuy 02-08-06, 11:31 PM I also purchased mine from geeks.com. It's connected to my TV through DVI. The picture looks great at 720p, but when I changed it to 1080i, there's visible interlacing on texts, even menu texts. It's very distracting. Is that normal? Is it an issue with the tuner or my TV? Thanks.
Is that normal? Is it an issue with the tuner or my TV? Thanks. What type of TV is it? If it's pixel based then it's the scaler in you TV.

flyingvee 02-09-06, 09:47 AM Or even if it's not - my 3510a looks horrid thru my crt 30" HD set at 720p - so soft, it looks like the old white diamond commercial with Liz Taylor. My set just has a pp onboard scaler - does a terrible job of upscaling (downscaling?) 720p to it's native 1080i. For me, tv's fault, not the LG.

Probably is the TV in your case, Jon. My Philips 30" CRT won't display 720p, so I have the LG set to convert everything to 1080i. I'm continually amazed at the quality of the image no matter what's on. But, wow, when WS HD broadcasts, like the Super Bowl, and some prime time shows, are on, it's so-o-o real looking. It's truly like looking thru a window.
Now if Philips would just tell me they have a fix for the occasional pin-cushioning when bright images are displayed, I'd be totally pleased with this TV. As for the LG tuner, I have no complaints. It does a great job, especially at the refurb price.

How would I know if it's pixel based? I have a 32'' LCD.
How would I know if it's pixel based? I have a 32'' LCD.LCD is pixel based. That is, there is only ONE native resolution - the array of pixels that make up your TV. Therefore, whatever resolution you are feeding the TV (1080i or 720p), the TV internally scales it to it's own native resolution.

Did you get this warranty info from LG? My unit won't play any DVD's and thought it would have the factory warranty since it's was listed on the geeks site with a 90 day warranty. I should return it the geeks but the units are out of stock now and I think they only give instore credit back from what I read and I don't want to have to deal with them again. I really bought the unit for the tuner but the up converting DVD player would be nice if it worked so I might look into getting it fixed sometime even if I have to pay for it myself.
Oh yeah one last thing for anyone looking at this unit the measurements in the downloadable manual are wrong. They list the unit as being 14.2Wx2.4Hx10.4D but the unit actually measures 17Wx2.75hx13D so if your limited on space don't go by the manual specs.
Thanks

Maybe that's one good reason to buy from refurbking_inc on ebay. Shortly after I got mine, I found that there was a problem with shifting from tuner to DVD and back. I returned it to RefurbKing, and they immediately sent me a fully functioning replacement unit. Shortly thereafter I got an email from SquareTrade on behalf of RefurbKing offering me a three-year warranty on the 3510A for $15.99, which I bought.
According to RefurbKing's website, they are the direct reseller for the LG/Zenith refurb operation in Chicago.

If you are within the 30 day return period Geeks should refund your money if they can't furnish a working unit. An instore credit for a DOA is BS. I would dispute the credit card charge if they try to pull that.
If you are outside of 30 days but within 90 days you will probably have to deal with LG, the refurb warranty is through them. LG should either fix or replace the unit.
I just got one of these from Geeks too :( Haven't tested it yet but will definitely do so before 30 days is up.
littlechou 02-09-06, 04:46 PM I got one from the geeks with firmware 1.91.
From the thread, it seems like a lot of people like 1.91 for its dvd playback. But is there a way for me to fix the DVI Auto detect issue? Is there a way for me to upgrade to 1.92 by myself? Thanks.
Bought from geeks with firmware 1.92. Mine came with the ability to watch region zero movies. Absolutely problem free except the DVI auto detect issue.
Yes -- I called LG and gave them the "serial number" off the back -- these units are not covered by LG in anyway. It is not LG's SN#

I purchased my LST-3510A at a B.B. As far as RGBHV DVD playback, I'd say that LG is giving mixed signals. My unit(1.91) will not play any protected disc at any resolution into my Barco BG801's RGBHV inputs. I called LG service and they told me that, yes, the unit was capable of playing back upscaled DVD's via it's RGBHV output, but that function was now disabled and they were not allowed to tell me how to switch it back on, as I posted a long time ago. Some help, here, please?????

littlechou 02-14-06, 10:24 AM Two issues that I have on the unit with firmware 1.91
1. When I set the HD tuner output to 1080i or 720P on DVI, 4:3 programe on the HD channel keep changing the aspect from wide screen to 4:3 then changing back to wide screen...
2. When I apply icons to one of the channel, all the subchannel will get the same icon. Like if I apply the PBS icon on 103.2, 103.1 which is CBS will also get the PBS icon. And also, I can only surf to the first channel of the main channel.
Does anyone with firmeware 1.92 has the same problem?

I have no success of getting above connections to work.
3510a set to dvi 1080i=image shows for a mere 2secs (at power on only) and I get white/black static backdrop and then no signal plus it flickers in between
3510a set to dvi 720p= It worked once for a while(2hours watching qam channels) then turned to the same conditon as the above .
I have tried 3 different dvi calbles and replaced the dvi blade but same results. Thus, I hooked 3510a to my 20"lcd monitor with dvi(720p)=works without a glitch
The components and the vga connections work fine as well, however I think the dvi connection gives me the best pictures(2hr exprience when it worked)
The dvi blade on my panny hooked up to my pc works beatifully, too.
Has anyone has a similar (or same) set up as mine? Any helps would be appretiated.

Hi speedracer57. I've Goggled, Yahooed, Jeved, and visited every other techinical search engine I could come across, for well over a year, all with no answers. I find it hard to believe that NOBODY out there knows how to make this machine simply work like it was originally designed.

Bigsmith 02-15-06, 10:09 AM My unit received from Geeks a couple of weeks ago works perfectly (so far) for both DVD's and QAM. It doesn't upconvert DVD's via component, but I have an HDMI input on my PJ so I don't care. I haven't been able to get the service menu access trick to work yet so I don't know what software version it has.

So how do you know that it's the 1080i that makes it WS vs any of the above combinations? Do you have the 3510 DVD playback set up for 4:3 or 16:9?

I have 1.92 and the icon behavior is like you describe. Whatever the main channel gets for an icon is also displayed on the sub-channels. I'm pretty sure that entering a channel number takes me to the main channel.

I have a Panny PHD6UY with the DVI blade and I have the type of problem (It won't sync). If you toggle back and forth between 720p and 1080i a couple of times (sometimes dozens of times) it will finally lock and work great. You can also try switching inputs on the panny via the remote and sometimes that helps it sync. I gave up trying to get it to work and now just use component.

Thanks for sharing. One thing that I noticed, when it works, it will only work until you power it off and then a whole new saga begins

I have exactly the same setup as you, and have the same issue. Stupid handshake!
Here is the solution: Put your display on the DVI input, turn on the unit, it should come up fine, then black out. Toggle your display input to component or whatever, then toggle it back to the DVI blade. It should work fine then.
(edit) Update: this method works two ways, either quickly switch inputs before the picture drops out the first time, or wait until the picture drops out then becomes white fuzz. If you wait until the fuzz becomes a blinking screen, you've waited too long to toggle the inputs. Hope that makes sense.(edit)
My cable box with HDCP does the handshake perfectly, the truth is that with our PHD6UYs we are lucky to even have HDCP on a working DVI blade....
BTW: I have 1.92 firmware, July 2004 and I have not checked for upconversion over component yet.(edit) does not upscale DVD over component (edit)
My only negative with the ATSC tuner is that there is not a simple stretch method to make 4:3 stuff (an upconverted TV show with black bars for example) fill up the 16:9 space. I also don't think the PQ is as good as my Samsung S-IRT351 which seems to have more vibrant colors. One plus is that the LG has stronger tuning power, and now I can pull in all the channels without antenna adjustment.

I leave my 3510A on the same picture setting all the time, and make picture adjustments exclusively on our Philips 30PW8420. I found that if I adjusted the 3510A picture controls, it created problems with the TV's aspect ratios, producing some odd proportions. One setting on the 3510A works best with the TV for varying picture sizes.
The 8420 has lots of aspect settings, so if WS is chosen, a 4:3 image will fill the screen, but it produces very wide people. I prefer to use 14:9 Zoom, which reasonably stretches the image L-R, but also stretches vertically a little less. The "nudge" control then can be used to push the image down so that people's heads aren't cut off. Don't know what the Panasonic offers in that area.

I'm at work, so I'm doing this from memory. I think the 3510A is set on "set by program." If I get home and find otherwise, I'll edit this post. :D

The "toggle through the inputs" trick usually worked for me, but not always and there was no way my wife could remember what to do, so I've decided to "settle" for component. But thanks for the info (I just tried it for old times sake and your first method worked).
pingman27410 02-18-06, 12:20 PM I have a 3510A from geeks.com. Unit came in early Jan in great condition. Really happy with the OTA HD side. However, when I use DVI to upconvert DVD's to my Sony 34", the color / picture exhibits an "instability." When examining faces closely, you can see a shifting color with what appears an oscillating gray / green shift. Almost like the color saturation is not stable. I do not see this on OTA HD, only on 1080i DVD. When playing DVD over component (480) all seems OK.
Anyone else have this issue?

My Philips 30" TV has HDMI but not DVI, whereas the 3510A has DVI and no HDMI, so I use a Monoprice DVI/HDMI cable to connect. I've had no problem with this arrangement, and I keep the 3510A set on 1080i output. Maybe the DVI/DVI connection is trouble, though I can't see why it would be. Don't know anything about Sonys, but there is an abundance of users here who do.
Mac The Knife 02-21-06, 03:01 PM No color problems for me with DVI to DVI on my Sony HS20 front projector.
Could be you just have a bad DVI cable that's not making a good connection on the green pin.

Do a search on "HDMI Color Space". The DVI to HDMI connection does not handle the HDMI green color space correctly. This causes a green cast to dark areas and a yellow cast to green areas. The first problem can be fixed by going into the Service Menu and turning down the CUT G two or three.
Newer Equipment, like my Panny S77S DVD player, have an adjustment for this.
pingman27410 02-21-06, 11:24 PM Thanks for the replies, I am using a DVI to DVI connection with a monoprice cable. My Sony is 3 year old 34HS510 model with no HDMI, only DVI. Color stability problem is only with DVD's on DVI at 1080i resolution. Not with OTA HD. Have tried LOTR, Spiderman2 and Fantastic Four. All show a sort of color "pulsing" effect, especially telling on closeups / faces.

Do you have another upconverting DVD player you could use to compare image quality?
littlechou 02-23-06, 11:13 AM Got a 1.91 unit from Geeks. The DVD player keep skipping the disk. Called the LG for warranty swap and was told the the serial number do not match the LG serial number, and I will have to deal with Geeks.
Eagles Dare 02-23-06, 12:27 PM Geeks makes you pay return shipping. Not a great policy for defective equipment. I thought about sending mine back as I bought it mainly for the tuner(s) and ended up getting a 50" Zenith plasma with QAM & ATSC built-in. I have similar problems as you on some discs - most play fine however. And then there's some won't even load at all(Pirates of the Carribean and Gladiator to name a couple).
I finally decided the 3510 may come in handy some day and I didn't want to lose around $30 shipping for a $160 refund. It may be my imagination but the DVD side seems to be giving me fewer and fewer probs. - The tuner side has always worked great, with a few annoyances (the treatment of sub-channels being the biggest to me).

bsandy,
Please elaborate on this. Thank you very much.
haganah 02-24-06, 11:24 AM My TV only has component, RGB, and S-Video.
I ordered the 3510A from Geeks today and I'm really hoping I don't get a defective unit. With my luck I probably will. We'll see.
Anyway, from what I've read RGB won't work with DVDs on this machine so component may be my best option. In that case should I purchase any special types of wires? I am very new to this so if anyone could help me find out if I need to spend money on those Monster cables I would appreciate it.
The item from Geeks comes with A/V cables but I don't know anything more than that.
Thanks again guys.

IMO:
1. Unless you need cables that run greater than 15 - 20 feet, then most cables you can buy at Walmart, etc will be fine.
2. Monster make a fine cable, but they are usually very overpriced.
3. Chances are if Geeks sends you component cables and they are long enough, you'll be set.
Good Luck...Mark

By the way if anyone is interested, there is a user on ebay selling a unit that upconverts through component. He is located in NYC.
