View Full Version : Momitsu 880N
Steven Drexler 09-22-04, 06:34 PM I got this response from one of the authorized vendors today about this unit:
There are currently prototype units shipping through Asian and Australian distribution. We do not accept the quality of the prototype units at this time. In addition, due to inadequate user manuals and user interface on the V880, we will likely be delaying shipment potentially even from other US distributors as we redesign user manuals for this unit.
We are hoping to be shipping these units within the next couple of weeks, but we can not guarantee anything at this time.

That is weird. Why would they be bent on killing the sales, by not having those features? I shall call them tomorrow and find out. I hope it is not true. Looks like a promising product to me.

I think the issue with the 880N is if it is a region 0 player, or multiregion. If it is multiregion, as the Hivizone response suggests, as I understand it, this means the player can be switched to the region of the disc and there are no RCE issues. If it is region 0, I understand this to mean the player can be set to Region 0, and RCE issues will result.
The other complication is does the 880N only allow 5 changes. Although I specifically asked about this, the hivizone response did not address this issue. So more information may be required from gallant testers, or Kwokyan from Hivizone.
Question is, what happens when you reach your 5-change limit? Does the V880N lose it's region-free capabilities? Does it lock to the last region setting? Is there a reset available?
I hope somebody could comment on it. Other than the RCE issue, the V880N looks very, very intriguing.
sddroog 09-24-04, 03:39 AM So what about this blue front? Is it only blue when turned on? In Standby? All the time?

It'll give me more time to figure out my input shortage.....
This weekend it is off to shop for a new bed....maybe it'll solve my ear ache ;)

imtigger 09-24-04, 07:50 PM I am thinking to purchase the Momitsu 880DX (maybe the 880N). Does anyone know anything about the reliability of HKFLIX.com as a supplier? They are out of Hawaii and say they have a warehouse in California and offer USA warranty work. Does anybody have any insight on them?
Thanks,

vorgusa 09-24-04, 08:08 PM Does anyone know how long it takes for Hivizone to ship once you get the email saying it has been sent. Usually companies will say overnight, 2nd day or one week. They just say SpeedPost
Just for confirmation, menus are not supported when you use the network connection due to the supported (or unsupported) file format(s). Can a firmware update fix this?
ewclam9 09-26-04, 10:31 PM Have anyone or dealer tried to change the region 6 or more times yet ? It is not a different task. Could someone tell us what will happen ?? Thanks.
Paul Bigelow 09-26-04, 10:37 PM You try first and let us know. ;)

The Blue front is part of the front case - no lights involved.
There is a VERY bright blue LED which lights near the display to show when the Network is available. So bright that I put a small circular adhesive dot in front of mine.
To answer an earlier question, DVD menus over network are not supported since the player will only read VOB files. You can play the VOB file which is the menu, but you can't navigate the menu because this is information is in the IFO files which the player does not read. Anything is possible with a firmware update, but with some suppliers only receiving stock now I think a major firmware update will be a little time away. The current firmware is very stable and works great.

vorgusa 09-27-04, 12:35 PM hey guys, I just got my v880n from hivizone. The Power cord that comes with it is not a US one. I was wondering what you guys did to fix this problem???
Paul Bigelow 09-27-04, 12:38 PM Radio Shack should have a detachable power cord that works. They sell two, one with a flat side and one with both sides rounded.
I would love a better sense of the user interface when accessing music (mp3's) over a network -- I understand it is supposed to synch wth itunes, but wonder how well that works...anyone tried it yet? Thanks very much!
vorgusa 09-27-04, 03:21 PM I was able to get it to work. I went to home depot and got a plug and cut off the Chinese one and hooked the new one up and it works fine. No I just have problems with the Region on Underworld. It says I need it on region 1 but it will not let me change to region 1.

I have a friend with a new v880N and he has the exact same problem. RCE disks that require "Region 1" will not play because the player comes set to Region 7. I don't know where Region 7 is. I didn't think it existed. Trying to set the v880N to Region 1 is unsuccessful... it seems like the player thinks he has used all five resetting tries, but he hasn't...

vorgusa 09-28-04, 09:16 AM It is a Enhanced Region problem and some movies will not play for now on the V880n but according to extremephono they are currently making a firmware to fix it. The movies that do not work are Underworld spiderman1(the superbit version works) MIB, and another I forgot. One great thing is that the momitsu can upgrade through the internet so you do not have to waste a CD

CoolinLA 09-29-04, 03:00 AM The RCE issue isn't that critical so long as you stay away from RCE DVD's. But the limit is something I'd like more info. on.
There seems to be a firmware update for the V880N on the Momitsu site, but it's dated April 5, 2004. The title of the update is to "Fix DVD loader boot up issues with CD in the tray". I have no idea if this would be related to the region preset issue.

Well, I don't really like silver equipment, but with this blue front it is really ugly. Is there a (relatively easy) way to detach the front (the whole front, not only the blue part) so I can make it black (using spray paint), together with the rest of the case?
I know, I will void the warranty but I don't really care.

I was originally under the impression that the unit was gray. That is the color on the Momitsu website but from the photos posted, it seems to be this ugly blue color. What were they thinking? The blue color makes it look like a cheap $20 player. I think I'll hold of purchasing one if this is indeed the color of all units produced.

vorgusa 09-29-04, 08:48 PM Another annoying thing about the player is that when you are connected to the network there is a bright blue light that lights up the room, but a small piece of ducktape fixed that problem
HeavyLifter 09-29-04, 11:33 PM Some questions:
1. When the 880n is connected to the network does it only play .vob files? Can it play .avi or .mpg files over the network?
2. How does the menu system work in general and more specifically with .avi files on a DVD-r? Could someone post a link to screen shots?
3. This may be wrong but I remember reading a while back that the 880n could be upgraded in the future? Does the 880-DX have this option and what would be upgraded (I don't remember what the upgrade was for...)?
seattlite 09-30-04, 04:06 PM Has anyone tried connecting an external USB hard drvie(NTFS formated) to the 880N's USB port? Does it work?
vorgusa 09-30-04, 04:12 PM heavy lifter all these questions have been answered in the thread already and on the momitsu website. http://www.momitsu.com/dvd_880nspec.html
has all the types of files it can play
the Menu system works good and it is pretty easy to use
In the Menu there is a firmware upgrade are that should be able to update over the internet if you have it connected the your network.
Has the video module been released yet? It would be nice to see if it can do a decent job of upconverting standard video signals....say for example...routing your SD satellite feed through it and watch it in 720p.
HeavyLifter 10-01-04, 12:07 AM Any word on what that module would cost or if it would be available on the 880-DX (I just need to find a couple hours to read this whole thread through)?
The Video Input Module is not released yet. The chipset used in the V880 Deluxe (Sigma Designs EM8500) does not support the video input function so I would guess (and this is a guess) that the VIM will only be available for the V880N. The V880N uses the EM8550 which does support analog video input.

edsuski 10-01-04, 02:59 AM Just a quick note on the V880N. I was able to get 1440 x 960p at 72 fps working on the V880N tonight. I had to change a few of the values from those predicted by the ever popular applet that one of the members so kindly developed, but the image is absolutely amazing! You have to love custom DVI resolutions. (Image on a Sony 9" CRT Projector). The V880N rocks! Get in line at extremephono.com. It is worth the wait.

Ed,
I'm glad your image looks so nice, but am curious why would you have a DVI input on a CRT projector. Being analog, most CRTs do not even have DVI in, and if your's does come with a DVI board, it is just converting it back to analog at the tubes. Have you tried RGBHV from the DVI-I out (with a DVI to 15-pin to 5 wire adapter)? I would think this would look best on a CRT. Just my 2 cents...
pasey25 10-01-04, 08:43 AM I am sure he means a DVI-I (i.e. analogue) I don't know any 9" Sony CRT FP's that have a DVI input.
In any event, even if that was what he was saying, the advantage of having a DVi-D in despite it being an analogue device is due to the fact that there may be advantages in keeping the signal digital until the last possible instant so as to be able to minimise any analogue signal degradation between the D/A coversion and the display.
maximusjongsma 10-01-04, 09:56 AM The 880N is amazing. My first player was an Samsung HD935 DVI with a Sanyo Z2, but this player is so much better concerning the image. The image is so f*cking sharp you cannot believe it. And no edge enhancement (the bug in the 935). Playing dvd's via a network connection works great. It's very fast and solid.
I hope the software will be better in future versions, because for example images are not shown in their source quality, but upscaled from 480 tot 720p.
We'll see about the software but the most important functionality for me is playing dvd via network and the picture/sound quality and they're all GREAT!!

ewclam9 10-01-04, 10:28 AM If it comes with an internal hard disk and a ftpd program, it would be perfect. Does anyone knows how to "customize" it ? They did that to the xbox. I do not want to turn on my PC everytime I want to watch a movie or a picture from it.

Good idea, but NAS is still expensive.
Can 880N support NAS ? It is not USB connected, but Ethernet connected.
edsuski 10-01-04, 10:49 AM mikemav,
This is one of the beauties of the V880X series of DVD player for CRT guys - It has a DVI-I output. So long after most other players abandon VGA/RGBHV and possibly all other analog outputs (could component go away for up-scaled outputs?) for the highest quality upscaling (in favor of HDCP and HDMI), we will be able to scale to our old analog devices. Devices that just happen to provide the best image possible - on the planet. O.K. - I am a little biased. (yes I know, lights have to be off, no computer games etc. etc., but the image guality is worth all of that)
So yes - custom DVI resolutions that are output over the analog portion of the DVI-I output to RGB-HV.
It looks amazing.

You may want to wait to see what the IO Data player turns out to be (November, 2004). It has a USB port so presumably you could hook up to external USB hard disks. It also will support WMV9 and XVids.

I found a NAS. It has both Ethernet and USB connection.
The LinkStation Network Storage Center - 250GB (under $300)
http://www.buffalotech.com/products/product-detail.php?productid=72&categoryid=16
We may be able to manage this NAS from a PC using its Ethernet port while it is connected to 880N via the USB port as a normal disk.
If it works, I could ftp all movies/pictures to this device.
Anyone has any comment on this set up ? Will it work ? Does the usb has enough speed to play DVD movie from the external disk ?
Cricricri 10-01-04, 11:26 AM Sorry to ask maybe a dumb question but...
Can I make a custom resolution (854x480) when sending a 480i signal over components ? (to my 4805 PJ which will then compensate with its Faroudja Fli2301 for the bad deinterlacing of the Momitsu)
Or can I just do it with DVI at 480p ?
Thanks !

The throughput for USB 1.1 is 12Mb/s. This is fast enought for MP2 streaming.
The problem with most NAS' is that they contain a Linux or proprietary file system such that you can not directly connect them to a PC via USB which expects to see a Windows files system(NTFS, FAT32, etc.). I'm assuming that since you can directly connect external hard drives or flash drives to the 880N, it seems like the 880N will only support external drives using a Windows file system.
Got my V880N! Probably one of the first here on the europe continent.
Funny thing it is, will post my findings later, for the time being I am confronted with the
"Unable to start MMC" so serving in XP doesn't work. On Win98 it does.
Anyone any idea? Apache interferes with tomcat?
Funny to be able to surf on my beamer! Viewing pictures and all. PQ is great (VGA to H30) will test component tonight, so far no improvement on PAL support at 50Hz besides 576i/p, and no divx subtitles (they were there in the V880!) where have they gone?
maximusjongsma 10-05-04, 11:08 AM Yo Virjen do you have a version with the scart because I also have an 880N and live in holland but no scart connector.
The 880N is superb but there are a lot of the features that need to be improved. Live photo and web viewing in the native res like the xbox media center.

Could you clarify. Do you mean the resolution steps down from 1080i/720p to 480p when viewing photos or web content?
maximusjongsma 10-05-04, 05:20 PM Hi, I mean when viewing photo's they are not scaled to the native res of the projector.
I suppose the scale the photo to 480p and from 480p to the selected projecto res. Also webbrowsing is not like you browse the web on a normal 1280x768 screen, but on a 640x480p pixel screen. Now you cannot browse sites normal everything is just to big.
I think all these features are upgradeable so i hope they will...
I also ordered my player at momitsu holland without scart.
Well folks I installed the new version after removing all java and apache stuff, that did the trick.
So I have played some media yesterday, wired and wireless, mp3 is possible , evene some phote viewing without a wire, but even DVD had its moments when using the ordinairy wired cat 5 cable.
Maybe the router affects this as well.
At least picture quality is great! But I miss my subs on divx.
The remote, well, it works, has different codes than the V880 version, but i gotta adjust to the layout which is, somewhat, logic in an asian kind of view?
I was running 800x600 on the H30 and browsing is a awkward task, the 640 480 window is just too small, but nontheless very funny! I can check my mail, whatch the wheather news. even stocks..
I got mine from momitsu europe, I am a dealer, so plan on selling these.
Does anyone know what the native resolution is on a Sony KF42WE610 or how I could go about figuring this out?
I've been using the 1080i DVI output which looks good--but i'm wondering if the picture would be even better if the dvd sent its out put in numbers native to the tv.
Theoretically, native resolution is always best for fixed pixel displays (LCD, DLP, Plasma, etc.) Since DVI is a progressive based transmission stardard (isn't it?), does anyone know what actually gets sent over DVI when the source device is set to 1080i? Does it send 540p or some variant?
andersa 10-06-04, 10:22 PM I'm curious to know if the 880N is capable of playing back XVID encoded material @ 1280 x 720, 4-5 mbps? Either from the network or from a disk.
I haven't been able to determine the limitation (if any) of DIVX and XVID encoded files, i.e with mpeg2 the manual says it supports up to 9.5 mbps.
Has anyone tried this format (or higher e.g. 1920 x 1080)?

WynsWrld98 10-06-04, 10:54 PM I'd like to get clarification if the 880N only outputs jpegs at 480p. I sure hope it can upscale them to whatever resolution the 880N is set to output (including 720p, 1080i and custom resolution).
I was a little confused by the earlier comments regarding 480p and JPEG images. Certainly when viewing JPEG images the image fills the screen and is scaled to the resolution you are running.
I have used the V880N at 720p DVi, 1080iDVI, PAL Composite (576i) and custom RGBHV (DVI) resolutions. Always behaves as described.
Aaron
maximusjongsma 10-07-04, 03:23 AM Trust me the 880N does scale the JPG image to 720p, but the source of the image is not used. The software uses the source of 480p and scales this to 720p
WynsWrld98 10-07-04, 03:56 AM maximus: that's not good news. I've sent high megapixel JPEGs to my Sony HS10 projector at 1366x768 (native resolution of the HS10) via HTPC over DVI and they look amazing!
maximusjongsma 10-07-04, 05:54 AM Yep I hope Momitsu will change their software/firmware to solve this, because it's great to view high res pictures on the projector. On my xbox media cente ri great on a good scaling momitsu is must be even better!
CoolinLA 10-07-04, 01:16 PM I'm curious about the optional video input module listed on Momitsu's site. Looking at the rear panel diagram in the manual, where could the module be installed? Will future batches of the V880N include this module?
My apologies if this question has been answered before.
Can the V880N play the DVD files from Video_TS directory(*.ifo and *.VOB files) located somewhere on the LAN? I have some DVDs that are on a server and would like to play on the TV.
Will it be just like playing the DVD from it's internal DVD drive or am I going to loose any features i.e DVD menus etc.? Thank you.
Apologies for anything previously covered. Random order.
I don't see yet how to play without the server running on Windows. I haven't dug much yet, but it's fairly obvious to me that Momitsu should (more for their benefit than mine) open source their server side stuff.
Network setup (wired, 802.11 both/either) was dirt simple. My lucent 802.11b was not even close to good enough for playing a dvd. I tried a 3.5mbps video with 128kbps audio and that wasn't usable either, with 11mbps reported and > 40dB s/n. BTW when it fails, it fails by simply playing blocks as it completes them: jerky with stops - not a bad failure mode.
I have not yet figured out how to keep my storage happy such that: my HTPCs see virtual DVDs (zplayer "open directory" sees a DVD) and 880Ns see single, play-all-able movies, without tons of nonmovie extra stuff. My best answers to this are not inviting. As part of the solution, I'd like the 880N to be able to handle or simulate chapters. I'd be happy with usable playlists for VOBs but I can't seem to make that work. Hackery under unix with hard links would be doable; under windows I'm still thinking.
I've got a few TB of video and a few 100GB of audio and navigation fairly bites. I'll be scratching my head on this one a bit, I think. For audio, it's got to be playlists.
It looks like we may be able to build our own websites that ultimately issue the right HTTP response to force a GET on the correct voodoo to get streaming going. If I'm right, then building a better/custom UI will be possible without Momitsu's help.
The momitsu server is a user process (W2KS/XPP) and terminates on logout. This bites bigtime; windows versions should be a service. I shouldn't have to hack to make that so. The streaming server and web stuff should be separate.
In navigation windows, with "SEARCH" up in the upper right hand corner, the "SEARCH" button on the remote is "invalid" so you have to do the very clunky click navigation to get the cursor into the search field. Silly, it seems.
The remote click audio is not 1:1 with clicks. On some clicks the 880N says "click" on some clicks it says "click click." Very confusing when you're typing with the remote - but turning the click sound off is bad, too.
The LED on the 880N is ungodly bright. Or Godly bright, maybe.
If I sound grumpy, I'm not; I like the machine very much. It has room for improvement.

You can play any VOB or "play all" in which case you get all of them, not just the movie ones.
See my previous post; I'm trying to figure out The Answer here and don't have it yet.

Menus, etc, are gone AFAIK. Chapters are gone. You can rip to vob-per-chapter (then "next" and "prev" will work), but that's a different world than having the virtual dvd around.
WynsWrld98 10-07-04, 11:19 PM aglp2k: I read in here somewhere it will NOT play .ifo files so menus from DVDs are impossible on the 880N from your PC. .ifo files contain the menu and navigation info and since the 880N can't read them you lose all of those capabilities.
A/Vspec 10-09-04, 07:13 AM Tom, Thanks for the very informative post on the V880N.
I am still using my HTPC (which I just upgraded to play WMVHD) but I would very much like to have a stand alone machine that would let me playback my large (60+ and growing) DVD collection from my file server.
I take it the best way to use the V880N is to use a program (will leave out the name of it :-0) to re-author the DVD so that it is the movie only and contained in one large VOB file?
Also is it true that you can not use both the DVI (RGBHV) output and the composite video at the same time? It would be nice if you could at least use the composite video out for the media navigation (for video touch screens) while playing the movies thru the DVI/component outputs.
In your opinion do you feel the V880N is viable now or should I wait a little bit longer and see if there are improvements made or if one of the other manufactures units that are rumored to be coming out next month work better?
farscape66 10-09-04, 02:18 PM The remote still sucks!!! There are not all of the keys needed to properly use the internet. The * and - appear in a lot of what I do, but no way to enter them They need wireless keyboard compatibility. Maybe plug one into the USB ?
____
But otherwrse I like it.
farscape66 10-09-04, 02:18 PM Any idea how to adjust these? The manual is very poor.

But this fails for my kids. They like the special features. Also, we may be a weird house, but we find it (only occasionally) useful to have things like French, Spanish, or Mandarin soundtracks.
Um, "But the special features aren't useful on the 880N" you say? But the same data store feeds HTPCs. I absolutely do not want to duplicate the store, and I don't want 880N-isms to cripple my otherwise very happy environment.
The model is our house is: buy dvd, put on server, put disc on shelf, kids (and others) never touch disc. This born of many destroyed/lost discs. I don't want to have to muck with the disc contents, reshuffle, reencode, etc. In some cases, I'll edit VIDEO_TS.IFO but that's almost always it.
If anything-but-movie means "go dig out the disc itself" I'm not happy. Well, my household is not, which means I'm not.
Some good news: I have soft links working - sometimes . I'm trying to figure out when they do/don't work. If I can make them reliably work, I'll be creating subdirs with soft links ("shortcuts") to the correct vobs to make a "movie only" directory without duplicating storage. "sometimes" scares me.
Also is it true that you can not use both the DVI (RGBHV) output and the composite video at the same time?
As fas as I can tell, you can not.

I see the machine as being very good. I see the software as prime for improvement. I don't predict an improvement that can't be applied via sw to older boxes, but what do I know? A counterexample to my view could be the simultaneous DVI/analog out. I don't know if this is a hw or sw (or pilot?) limitation.
FWIW I have also experienced VOBs coming over with random soundtracks played. Eg I have a 3-VOB movie, all with identical stream IDs, etc, and VOBs 1 and 3 come out in English (0xBD/0x80) but VOB2 plays in French (0xBD/0x82). (81 is the DTS English track in this case). I have no clue why this happens. Where it happens, it's repeatable. Yes, I can forcibly remove all but one track to fix. I'd prefer not to have to, as above.
Some more SW improvements needed:
Memory - my Momitsu server, which hasn't been talked to in over 12 hours, is over 100MB VM and Mem Usage each. Way too big. It gets this big pretty much on startup. Its internal db needs work.
Should be able to pick language track on network VOB - doesn't work for me.
Should not pause & display header between items in a playlist.
Player can clearly process IFOs (it plays discs). Improve the player<->server protocol and get the file mucking to happen on the player. Will allow virtualized DVDs to play correctly on player.
if server isn't to be open sourced or unixed, it'd be very good to publish the protocol.
several other things mentioned in previous post
I'm sure there are more

Sigh, I think I have this figured out and it looks like a bug. The 880N takes the 1st stream it sees as Stream 0 (which it calls Audio 1), regardless of the stream ID. So when VOB 1 comes over looking like this (from bbdmux):
File vts_01_1.vob is an MPEG-2 Program Stream
Found stream id 0xBF = Private Stream 2
Found stream id 0xE0 = Video Stream 0
Found stream id 0xBE = Padding Stream
Found stream id 0xBD = Private Stream 1, substream 0x80, AC3 Audio stream 0
Found stream id 0xBD = Private Stream 1, substream 0x89, DTS Audio stream 1
Found stream id 0xBD = Private Stream 1, substream 0x82, AC3 Audio stream 2
Found stream id 0xBD = Private Stream 1, substream 0x83, AC3 Audio stream 3
(remaining substreams omitted)
The V880N maps thusly:
Audio1 is substream 0x80, AC3 Audio stream 0
Audio2 is substream 0x89, DTS Audio stream 1
Audio3 is substream 0x82, AC3 Audio stream 2
Audio4 is substream 0x83, AC3 Audio stream 3
But when VOB 2 comes over looking like this
File vts_01_2.vob is an MPEG-2 Program Stream
Found stream id 0xBF = Private Stream 2
Found stream id 0xE0 = Video Stream 0
Found stream id 0xBD = Private Stream 1, substream 0x89, DTS Audio stream 1
Found stream id 0xBD = Private Stream 1, substream 0x82, AC3 Audio stream 2
Found stream id 0xBD = Private Stream 1, substream 0x80, AC3 Audio stream 0
Found stream id 0xBD = Private Stream 1, substream 0x83, AC3 Audio stream 3
Found stream id 0xBE = Padding Stream
(remaining substreams omitted)
The V880n now maps:
Audio1 is substream 0x89, DTS Audio stream 1
Audio2 is substream 0x82, AC3 Audio stream 2
Audio3 is substream 0x80, AC3 Audio stream 0
Audio4 is substream 0x83, AC3 Audio stream 3
Of course, it's playing Audio1, which in this case is silence (no dts?). For VOB3, the 1st muxed stream packets are in substream 82, French, so that gets labelled Audio1, and I hear French.
I think it's a bug to ignore stream ID.
Mike Karolitzky 10-11-04, 01:02 PM I cannot get the player to recognise any of the files I have on a portable USB drive. The palyer recognizes the drive, but shows no files when I browse to it from the MyHome page.
Also, I cannot play any iTunes files I have downloaded from the iTunes music store. Anything I've imported works, but not from the store.
Anyone else having these issues?
Thanks
Mike
Hi all,
I am having problems running the MMS. I install it, but when I try to run it, I get an error that the server can not run. My player does see my machine, but since I can not run the MMS I can not put my pics/music for my player to see.
I have version 11 of the executable on my disc that came with the player.
Mike Karolitzky 10-11-04, 03:48 PM You need to uninstall all versions of Java before you reinstall the MMS. I did a manual install of the Sun Java before the MMS, although Momitsu says you don't need to.
Wokred for me.
Good Luck.

This works fine for me, so far.
farscape66 10-11-04, 08:28 PM The software has a firmware update option. I assume it looks for new releases and downloads them? Anyone know when a new release is coming?
Tim Smith 10-11-04, 08:58 PM I just received this player today and I have to say I'm pretty disappointed. First, every button on the remote effects my toshiba tv. If I push play my tv changes inputs. I hit another button and my tv's setup screen comes up. It's just not usable. Does anyone have a solution to this?
Secondly, the software is really beta quality. Sometimes the mms software recognizes new files added to the directory, but most of the time I have to close the interface and restart to get it to see the new titles. In addition, the player sometimes sees the new ones but sometimes takes turning it on and off again.
I tried watching video streaming over a powerline ethernet connection (14mbps). This worked for mpeg1 but not well for mpeg2. VOB files stuttered non-stop. When I switched to a hardwire connection to the 100mbps router, video has played flawlessly.
I can run cat5 to my tv room but the remote control issue is too much to deal with. I think I'm going to have to get rid of this player.
That doesn't sound as though the problem is with the player. SOunds like a problem of speed!
Tim Smith 10-12-04, 08:01 AM msb212, did you read my post?
Speed is not an issue, the video performs, as I said, flawlessly over a 100mbps network. My problem is the remote and the mmc software that sometimes recognizes newly added movies and sometimes does not.
davey_fl 10-12-04, 09:05 AM Hey Tim just so you know, mine does the exact same thing with my Toshiba TV. It's not an issue though (for me) because I'll be using it in my theater room, and the Toshiba sits in the family room...
FlyOnTheWall 10-13-04, 05:52 PM Any news of THE MMS software working for a MAC. I know there are a few MAC fans on the board, just wondering if anyone has gotten any other Server Software to work with the 880N.
Thanks
james448 10-13-04, 08:38 PM Correct me if im wrong please, but I understood the final release of this player wasnt out yet and everything out now is somehow fixed at the factory.
If thats correct, when will the final product be available?
Also, what was wrong in the first place?
You are wrong product is good to go, just updates will be released in the future.
Hardware is final. Release is ok.
TheDreamer 10-14-04, 09:35 AM So, I guess there's no risk if I got one now, rather than wait for the RPC=1 update to appear?

sddroog 10-14-04, 01:25 PM Are any of the V880N users using a Philips Pronto remote? I have a hell of a time learning the codes from the original Momitsu remote. I have most of the codes working now, but they refuse to repeat. Probably because of a bug in the Pronto software. It recognised the codes a NEC1 codes (but they are at 40Khz modulation instead of the usual NEC1 frequency).
I am using the Pronto Next Generation (RU950/TSU3000). Perhaps anybody with another Pronto (TSU1000/2000?) who are able to learn the codes correctly can supply me with there CCF?
Thanks!
Regards, Stefan.
farscape66 10-14-04, 03:08 PM I have a Pronto 2000 and programmed in the codes from the new remote. I did have problems with the old remote for the 880 model. But I have noticed no problems with the 880N remote. Other than the slow response. The pronto does help that quite a bit.
Message me and I can send you the ccf for the 2000.

Thank You in advance.

When I 1st plugged my ancient lucent card in, it didn't come up. Rather than debug step by step, I took the slow but sure (?) route. I turned crypto off (in the AP and the 880N), made sure the card worked in a laptop (no mac filtering problems) made xtra sure the SSID was correctly entered in the 880N and then it worked 1st time. When the network was 1st discovered, I think the 880N told me I had to reboot. From then, no problems, except that 802.11b is way too slow for video. If you've done the equivalent, I don't know what to say.

All I can say is I've seen FAT work w/o problems. (I was surprised to note my little keychain USB thingy is FAT.) What's on your drive? I have other FSs here I could test to see if I can dup your issue.

Yea, I had the same issue with my USB drive. I reformatted it to FAT32 and went from dynamic to basic disk.

wrinkols 10-14-04, 11:09 PM I've adjusted some more settings on my router (I hard virtual DMZ settings set to my laptop) so i'm hoping that will fix my wireless issues. I read my manual on my harddrive and found that it's NTFS, so i'm guessing that's not supported by this player. What program should I use to format it too fat32? And also, is it possible to do half ntfs and fat32?
Thank You
wrinkols 10-15-04, 12:50 AM Here is another question I have about the wireless setup. Does anyone know if the machine only receives on a specific chanel? Also does anybody know if/where you can buy the optional input for the player.
sddroog 10-15-04, 03:51 AM Hi,
I am having a problem with this player. Sometimes (especially after accessing the network functions) it won't recognize the disc in the player. Then, when I try to open the tray it says 'Open' on screen and on the LCD, but nothing happens. The only thing I can do is power off from the remote. But after that, it won't power on again until I reset it with the power switch on the front panel.
It this a firmware fault or is there something wrong with my player? Do others have similar problems?
Regards, Stefan.
@farscape66: I sent you a PM with my email address. Can you please sent me the CCF? Thanks!

I have the same problem. It seems to happen mainly when there is a disc left in the drive and then it is powered on and off through the remote it seems. I read that there is a firmware upgrade but haven't been able to find it yet. I think it may have been a common problem in the other 880 models.

drajaytandon 10-16-04, 06:28 AM I use a netgear ma401 PCMCIA card and a netgear DG834G ADSL router. It works well most of the time, but I have had to reboot the router (which is easy) if the v880n WiFi signal strength is 0.
Has anyone had any experience playing xvid or divx encoded video. If so, how did it perform? Has anyone tried it with an external USB harddrive?
I usually download TV shows from usenet rather than watch live, and I"m eyeing this player as a way to play them on my big screen rather than my computer monitor (rather than setting up a HTPC).
Thanks!

Yes, divx.
If so, how did it perform?
I have mixed results. It looks like it matters which version of divx was used. Interestingly, it seems to be independent of bitrate. I will post some actual data later, perhaps today. If you want to encode up some 90 seconds of something and mail me a URL to download it from, I can tell you if it plays and how well.

Works for me. Seems (see earlier posts) that some FSs aren't supported. I'll be checking this out too, but won't get to it for a bit.
drajaytandon 10-16-04, 12:18 PM My v880n has just died on me so I can not provide any additional comment, but it was impressive before it died.
drajaytandon 10-16-04, 12:33 PM Apologies, it is working again .. warning to everyone .. do not hold the power button on the dvd player down for too long or it switches to standby instead of being 'on'. I do not understand this.
wrinkols 10-16-04, 12:33 PM I'm pretty sure I need to exchange my player for a new one. I never have this many problems with electronics of any sort. Momitsu isn't very good with their customer service. Has anyone else had any problems contacting them? I've written them a couple emails but they don't answer any questions really.
drajaytandon 10-16-04, 12:40 PM I would have thought ask the dealer you bought the player from. Apart from the weird power button on the player I have had no problems with the v880n, I find the web browsing capabilities it has quite amazing.
Does anyone else find the graphics on the web pages produced the v880 poor? Why is this?
drajaytandon 10-16-04, 01:02 PM There are problems with the build quality it died on me again. I think it is a PSU problem.
wrinkols 10-16-04, 06:26 PM I contacted the dealer I bought from (HKFLIX.com) and they told me I had to email Momitsu for an RMA. This kind of makes me mad because I buy so much through them. I would've thought that they would be willing to exchange and/or fix the problems, but it doesn't seem that way. Hopefully I can get this taken care of soon. I know my PCMCIA slot can't be functioning correctly because my wireless card doesn't work at all. If I plug in my player through ethernet then it works flawelessly. My harddrive doesn't work properly, but I'm pretty sure that's because it's NTFS, although i haven't read anywhere that this isn't supported.

No, NTFS isn't supported. I had the same issue. Reformatted to FAT32 and it's working flawlessly.

Have you played VOB files off of your hard drive yet? I reformatted to FAT32, which fixed the problem, but I tried playing some VOB files and I'm guess the USB 1.1 wont transfer fast enough? Have you had this problem at all?
Are you guys just talking about external usb hard drives needing to be Fat32?
I am playing VOBs, MP3's, mpgs etc off 3 partitioned NTFS Drives, with no issues at all. 880N works well with media centre version 1.2 and my install of windows xp sp2 over wired ethernet.

Yeah, we're talking about external usb harddrives when plugged directly into the 880N through usb port on the rear. Is this the way you are running your harddrives? Or do you have you drives plugged into your computer and then your computer plugged into the player through ethernet?
I have the NTFS drives plugged into a computer, then connected to 880N with ethernet.

I could also use a copy of the Momitsu V880 code for my Pronto. I've been using basic command for the V880 on my Pronto but I recently aquired a new Amrpo 4600 which requires new setting on my V880. When I took my V880 remote out and added some new batteries, guess what, now it doesn't work at all. So I can't get into the setup menu on my V880. Please send to "Fraza4@Bellsouth.net"

You can find a few CCF files for a V880 on Remotecentral. I guess some of them also have the setup button in there.
Regards, Stefan.
I have several AVIs which I thought played fine, but don't. The issue is that they pause, skip, and stutter. But without exception, they make it more than 1 minute into the avi before problems arise. Thereafter the stuttering is constant and reproducible.
I checked encodings, scale, audio, and media. I believe I can exonerate audio and media. All MPEG1 and MPEG2 videos I've tried work fine. I've tried only a few MPEG1 videos. Every failure I've seen has been AVI.
My V880N has issues with maybe 2/3 of my AVIs with DIVX3, DIVX5, and Microsoft MP4v2. Some clips play fine but some do not. (I'm assuming these are the codecs which the 880N is reporting as "DIV3, DV50, and MP42" respectively- I don't keep track of long-ago-encoded video codecs.)
For any given failure, it fails served via MMS, USB device, and burned to DVD - if it fails via one medium it fails on all. Thus I believe the problem is not the MMS or network or USB support.
Anyway, trying to find the magic failure formula, I've failed: Here's what doesn't seem to matter as some work and some fail:
AC3, MP3, MP2, WAV, and no audio
Bitrates between 900 and 3mbps
Many original sizes from 640x3xx to 720x480
How is people's luck with avi on nonnetworked V880 machines? Does anyone have the story? I just don't think the network is part of the problem here.
wrinkols 10-18-04, 09:42 PM I've played some DIVX5 and some mpeg2 and also some other various forms of video, all of which have worked ok. The only trouble I have with is playing VOB over the usb.
Stefan,
Thanks for the info, I'll stop by RemoteCentral. I need the codes for V880. I'm still debating the V880N purchase against some type of scaler. I haven't heard how good the V880N can do 1080P and I have a new to me 9" Ampro 4600 CRT that I would like to shoot 1080P from.
Andre
farscape66 10-19-04, 07:15 AM I never heard anything about 1080P, am I confused?, Enlighten me?
melechmet 10-19-04, 11:19 AM I've also had problems with some AVIs- over ethernet and over USB. The 880N stalls and then recovers often, and then there are perfectly good AVIs that loose their sound.

Thanks Paquin! I've PM'd you with info for where to download a couple of sample Xvid videos.
Darkhound 10-20-04, 02:13 PM I figured this is the best place to ask...
Will the V880N upscale to 720P on Analog (Component) video?
I know that the D1/D2 can only upscale non-Macrovision DVDs over Analog. I was hoping that since Momitsu is an overseas all region DVD player, they would have "worked" around this.
My wife will string me up if I need to buy another cable after spending $150 for the 35 ft component I just bought 3 months ago.

FTR duck's xvids played 100% fine
SpeedyHTPC 10-21-04, 12:42 PM Has anyone had any smearing problems while playing Xvid based (1.02) avi's on your 880s? or any DivX/Xvids that wont play at all?
Tbone2000 10-24-04, 02:12 PM Ok, I read through all 600+ posts and nothing really talking about macrovision. I know on the old players you could go in to the "secret" menu to disable macrovision but the button press for secret does not seem to work on the 880N. My issue is that when I watch "Day After Tomorrow" it looks and plays great at 480p but when I try to upscale to 1080i, it does play but I had various strange fluctuations on screen. It's definitely not watchable and I'm assuming that this is macrovision but I don't really know. Maybe there is a new code? Maybe 1080i is just having problems? I run my cable box at 1080i and it looks great with no strange video problems.
Any ideas.

Yeah, I had noticed that as well but thing is, it appears to be upscaling to 1080i it's just that you get lots of undesirable crap on the screen.
Tbone2000 10-24-04, 10:59 PM FYI, I just read this over at dbaforums, posted today:
"I have just received new firmware for both the V880N and the V880-DX which apparently add support for 50Hz via component and DVI, as well as fix some other problems."
I have no idea where or if you can get it yet. This person was apparently working for Com-Tek.
Tbone2000 10-24-04, 11:17 PM Also, I just tried to update my V880N firmware via the setup menu but it says no new firmware available. I assume you simply have to connect to the Internet and it knows where to check. I verified that I was connected properly by opening Google on the url menu. This is the first I connected it to the Internet and I have to admit, pretty cool. Just hope that you don't have much typing to do. :D
wrinkols 10-25-04, 04:26 AM I remember a lot of people talking about trying to use a keyboard through the usb in the rear of the 880N. I was wondering if anyone has tried this yet.
On momitsu website they say subs in the srt format are supported on network playback of divx.
I have not bee nable to.
Has anyone actually seen this working?
I hope the new firmware will be available soon.

Fails for me; or, I don't know how to make this work.
sddroog 10-26-04, 08:43 AM Under 'options' you can adjust the 'video zoom'. Does anybody know how that works? It does not seem to matter what I choose, I don't see any difference between the options.

I have a question about Momitsu MMC Software.
How can I convert my DVD movies to a format that the MMC Software will recgonize? Does MMC have such capability?
Second question: Can I connect a network HDD to the Momitsu and stream movies that way?
Thanks.

The software recognizes many formats; please RTFM. We could hash and rehash this ad nauseum in this forum, but my advice to you is this: download the software, install it, and point a web broswer at it (http://hostname:8000 unless you change the port number). You will see what the unit would put on a TV. If you navigate to a folder with some media files in it, the server will manifest files (and links for them) it thinks it can play, and will not manifest those it cannot. The server's ability to stream a file does not guarantee the player has the right codec, however.
If you knew all that and just wanted to know how to create media files from DVDs, then I am simply not answering your question.
Second question: Can I connect a network HDD to the Momitsu and stream movies that way?
The network function of the Momitsu is managed through an http interface, speaking with its server, not through SMB or some such. Eg to ask for a particular video to be streamed over IP, you end up clicking on a link that looks like this: http://hostname:8000/perform?id=1234&counter=2&application=video&action=playvideo. What you get back appears to be nonstandard, but I have barely glanced at it. So you may need a PC running their server, with your net drive accessible to that PC, unless you can imitate their protocol & behavior. The navigation/selection stuff is very simple. The homework lies in figuring out what to do when a particular media file has been selected for play.
What does work, however, is to connect a drive to the USB port. The FS has to be MS' FAT or FAT32, it seems.
Tbone2000 10-27-04, 10:06 AM Just released, V880N Firmware! :D 1080i has apparently been fixed!! See the following copied from Mitsumi's web site:

Nicke Dee 10-27-04, 10:59 AM The V880DX is supposed to output component 720P and 1080i at both 50 & 60hz, but i cant seem to find this on my V800N, is that so ?
Or am i missing where i can change the HZ setting (except through custom DVI settings)

Yes. Actually, I meant to follow the directions but I forgot that the Ethernet cable was not plugging in to my computer. The firmware installed with no problem on the V880N.
A few other things:
After installing the new firmware I could not see my laptop (even after I plugged the Ethernet in again). Both the laptop and V880N could access the Internet but could not see each other. I rebooted both but still no success. I removed and then reinstalled MMC1.2 and rebooted both but still no luck. I then reinstalled the new firmware and still no luck. Finally I decided to manually add a connection to the V880N and manually enter the IP address and that worked perfectly. No idea why the MMC can not see the PC anymore since it did with the old firmware.
The firmware update page listed that the firmware the units were shipped with started with a 6 and now it's 7. Interestingly, my machine did have a 7 firmware previously but not the newest. Apparently some interim release.
There is a movie I have tried to run over Ethernet and the player comes up with Q-PIXEL not supported or something along those lines. It's an AVI file and when I tried to do something with it on Nero it says that it is predominantly PAL format. I assume that this is a codec that is not supported.
Yes, the message regarding region changing only 5 times has been removed so it seems it's not an issue anymore.
Macrovision appears to be "on" with my previous firmware and the latest firmware. This is frustrating. I bought this machine in large part because I could disable the Macrovision but it seems that as of now you can not. I'm not even certain that the Macrovision is the problem but when I tried to play a DVD "Day After Tomorrow" at 1080i I get wavery lines and color pulsating. I have to assume that is Macrovision. I have tried the "remove cd and press down, up, down, up, right, left" and nothing happens. Anyone who has additional info on this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Nicke Dee 10-28-04, 02:41 PM I updated the firmware with success, i had no problem accessing the mmc after either.
I have a problem though, i have the movie Monsters inc, and i get really strange picture with it, i have pulsating lines, and strange noise and unstable edges....could this be macrovision related ?
It´s a pal movie and im using DVI 720P, i also tryed 1080i, and 1024*768, and both 60 & 75 hz and also component 720p, problem remains.
disapears only with regular component interlaced.

Sounds like the same thing I am seeing. I mentioned Macrovision since I figured that is what causes this but I could be mis-stating. It may by HDCP which I assumed is tied to Macrovision but maybe it's something completely different. I have been seeing different information on this so my assumption is that Momitsu had every intention of removing the copy protection issues but maybe got threaten with a law suit and ultimately decided to leave it enabled.
I'm sure that there is or will be an easy work around but the question is, what is it and how long will it take someone to figure it out.
sddroog 10-28-04, 03:44 PM I was just watching James Bond Goldfinger. Paused the movie twice for a few minutes, but both times I was unable to continue after the break. BTW The screen-saver did not kick-in yet.
Pressing play got it going for about 2 seconds, than the player paused. Had to switch it off completely to fix it.
Will try again soon with some other DVDs. I am afraid it is a new 'feature' from the new firmware...
Regards, Stefan.
garyfritz 10-28-04, 04:37 PM Guess I should have posted here instead of starting a new thread. This seems to be the hangout for V880N users. :)
I can't delete the original post, but here are the questions I asked there:
Just got my new V880N, and I'm trying to figure out a few things. The manual is a bit brief for my tastes. Could any V880N users out there answer a few questions?
* I see that the TV Set up menu lets me select 480p, 720p, 1080i, etc. But I don't see anyplace to specify the refresh rate for the different resolutions, or even see what refresh rate it's using. Am I missing something, or do I just have to accept whatever the default is?
* The custom DVI settings (under DVI Setup) seem to give you complete control of all parameters. But as far as I can tell, there is only one set of parameters. Isn't there some way to save one set for 480p, one set for 720p, etc?
* I have no clue what most of the parameters in DVI Setup should be. It's preloaded with defaults for 640x480. How can I load it up with default values for 720p or whatever so I can tweak from there? Selecting DVI 720P doesn't seem to effect the DVI Setup values at all.
* I think I want to run DVDs at 720p, 71.928 Hz refresh rate, 1.85:1 AR. (Sound reasonable for an XG852 CRT projector?) I assume I use the DVI Setup menu to specify the refresh rate, set the DVD to 16:9 playback, Video Zoom to "Fit to screen," etc. Anything else?
* I have the necessary cables &etc to pull RGBHV off the DVI output. My projector will also take component if that's a better answer, though it would cause a bit of difficulty at first. Is there any reason to prefer the component over the RGB DVI output? If I use the component, then I assume I choose the TV Mode that lists Component 720p &etc instead of DVI 720p &etc?
Thanks!
Gary
Nicke Dee 10-29-04, 08:54 AM Garyfritz:
1. i dont think there is a setting for refreshrate except in the custom DVI menu.
2. you can only have one setting in the custom DVI menu.
3. if you do a search on the forum, or check old momitsu threads you can find alot of custom resolutions settings for different resolutsions and refreshrates. and then youl have to try your way through.
You can also use powerstrip and a computer to find out your optimum value and then there is a tool in another momitsu thread that converts powerstrip values to momitsu values.

New firmware:
Ok PAL output on component, more testing to do.
NO SUBTITLES, still doesn't seem to work! (on divx that is)
Anyone got subtitles running?
garyfritz 10-30-04, 10:59 PM Do I have a weak battery, or is the V880N remote really, really, wimpy?
I have to point straight at it, from no more than a few feet away. Whereas the remote for my NEC projector is basically nondirectional. Point it any direction, anywhere in the room, and it works.
Mike Karolitzky 10-31-04, 11:14 AM I just did the update this morning. I can now stream XviD's more consistently, still having issues with DivX.
Maybe just me, but the remote seems more responsive.
Still have issues playing iTunes files that were downloaded from the store.

vorgusa 10-31-04, 09:09 PM has anyone had widescreen problems after installing the update.... every movie I have watched ended up being stretch instead of properly shown and they were all widescreen. I watched girl next door... eternal sunset of the ( forgot the name) and another movie all widescreen but stretched with bars at the bottom
New firmware: .srt subtitles are working all right with divx and xvid movies. And they look good to on white background cause of the light grey transparent box containing the subs. Great!
Whats left to be desired? Progressive PAL on component and DVI. And the search button doesn't work for me.
[vorgusa] Don't they have a bit too much setings huh, full screen, default, letterbox, 16:9, native.. but then again pressing the zoom button works wonders..

The only thing this zoom button does for me is zoom (1 to 4). It doesn't do anything for the aspact ratio.
Regards, Stefan.
In the settings I have selected full screen, first time I pressed the zoom button yesteday I got 4:3 lettebox which changed the ET faces to normal. I guess multiple combinations are possible...
This was using latest firmware and a divx movie.
I wanna go home and play with my V880N!
Did I notice strange ghosting (decode mess) on divx yesterday? Will compare with the V880 later..

I just changed my settings to full screen also (I still don't know what all these options do, I don't see any difference!) but zoom still only zooms. No aspect ratio options.

Ah. I am using a DVD. Haven't done any Divx testing yet.

vorgusa 11-01-04, 11:01 AM Zoom does not help at all everything is still stretched... I think all DVD Players need a verticle stretch so that you can fix the dvd players mistakes.
Creteil 11-01-04, 11:45 AM Hi all,
This is my 1st time on this forum, and after reading all the "Momitsu V880N" related thread i have finally decided to click on the order at "Cypress Ltd. Directshop".
However, during my digging into discussion and reviews, i have also downloaded the firmware of the other version without networking functions, i mean the well know "Momitsu V880".
With the old device, the firmware iso and then the romfs can be mounted under linux, and i think we can hack the firmware, for example, i would like to add the TTA Codec support like it was added to the "Neuston Maestro DVX-1201" ...
Guys at TTA Web site provide help to integrate the Codec support into the hardware :
Since i can't post directly links, search google with "tta hardware codec", then follow and read the 1st link.

chris^sm 11-01-04, 01:20 PM Hi Creteil. I had a look at the 880N firmware in a hex editor, and as you would expect there is very little human readable stuff in there (sometimes there's some ascii text in there). Unfortunately, I don't think the TTA guys could integrate their codec without extensive support from Momitsu. They would need detailed documentation on the file format of the firmware. For example here is the header of the firmware file in hexadecimal:
11 00 00 EA 11 00 00 EA 10 00 00 EA 0F 00 00 EA 0E 00 00 EA 0D 00 00 EA 0C 00 00 EA 0B 00 00 EA FA FF 7F 00 03 00 00 00 8D 24 00 03 61 60 00 00 22 00 00 00 40 03 00 00 FF 01 00 00 00 02 00 00 FF FF 00 00 00 80 00 01 00 80 00 01 00 00 00 EA FD FF FF EA 20 00 4F E2 1E 00 90 E8 88 30 9F E5 01 30 53 E2 FD FF FF 1A 06 06 A0 E3 02 09 80 E2 00 10 A0 E3 00 10 80 E5 06 06 A0 E3 07 0A 80 E2 10 00 80 E2 EA 10 A0 E3 03 1C 81 E2 00 10 80 E5 05 06 A0 E3 7C 10 1F E5 14 13 80 E5 05 06 A0 E3 84 20 1F E5 20 23 80 E5 88 30 1F E5 24 33 80 E5 8C 40 1F E5 00 43 80 E5 90 50 1F E5 28 53 80 E5 05 06 A0 E3 94 60 1F E5 24 60 80 E5 98 00 4F E2 1E 00 90 E8 04 00 91 E4 04 00 83 E4 02 00 51 E1 FB FF FF BA 00 00 A0 E3 04 F0 A0 E1 C8 91 05
Each pair of alphanumeric characters represents 1 byte, so that block above is about 240 bytes. You need to know things like whether you should read the data 1 byte at a time, 1 short at a time (2 bytes), 1 int at a time (4 bytes), etc -- and this number probably changes in different sections of the file. Suppose we determine for some particular section we are supposed to read 4 bytes at a time, we move on to actually figuring out what 11 00 00 EA hex = 285212906 decimal stands for. It's quite hard without docs!
Without knowing how this stuff is being processed on the DVD player side, you're pretty much shooting in the dark. But if someone could convince Momitsu to give out some documentation, who knows what could be done!

Creteil 11-01-04, 01:32 PM Hi chris^sm,
If i have understanded properly the hardware Momitsu use for their V880N device, it look like it was the "EM8500 Progressive DVD Player Development Kit" from Sigma Designs, Inc.
Search "EM8500 Progressive DVD Player Development Kit" on Google and look the 1st link returned ...
I'm pretty sure all Manufacturer use same platform and then add their specials features (for example Neuston Virtuoso use same flat .bin file for firmware upgrades) ...
Probably Momitsu have the devel kit to ease the development ...

Creteil 11-01-04, 03:53 PM Re chris^sm,
Effectivelly i have found this link since my search for a new DVD Player and that's why i have posted the initial message about the possibility to hack the original firmware ...
I have also contacted the guys at TTA Codec Web site and waiting for an answer ...
I'm gona probably ask also guys at Sigma Design, Inc. since i know the developer of the two modules for the arm processor was a French citizen like me ...
Hope i can manage a deal like obtaining some help about the firmware flat .bin file ...
Best deal was to manage with Momitsu something like they permit an open source enhancement of there firmware ...
I know there is an authorized retailer of Momitsu reading this thread, maybe if it read theses messages he can try to help us managing a sort of this ...

PS: someone have an idea of the max time for my "Momitsu V880N" reaching the French territory ?
Creteil 11-02-04, 01:43 AM Hey !!!
The guy at Sigma Designs, Inc. just answered to contact and deal with Momitsu.
And here is the answer of the TTA guy :
Hello Colin,
Thank you for interest in our project. Yes it's possible to play TTA
files on Momitsu V880N. It's interesting for me too.
I have contacted with Momitsu already and I have redirected your
message with my comments to support@momitsu.com now.
I think here is no problem to implement our code into Momitsu
firmware, but it's would be better if you can ask them directly about
the TTA support in a new firmware for Momitsu V880N. Also it's more
better if your friends can to ask them about it too ;-))
As for me - I'm ready to support this device and have a worked player
code for EM85XX based systems.
Best regards,
-- Alexander
So, please, can you all email Momitsu to ask for TTA Codec support !!! ???

Good question, mine is very weak as well. I have all my components in a Salomon cabinet with the perforated steel door and all my other devices work ok. When I say ok, it's not great with the others and sometimes I need to lean a bit off my chair but they will work. The V880N, no chance. I lean as far as I can and nothing. I need to get within about 6 feet or so and very direct angle. When I open the door it's ok. One could argue that it's the stereo cabinet but at the end of the day virtually everything else is ok. Interestingly, I had initially bought a Samsung 841 and had the exact same trouble and the Samsung also had the mirrored window on the front of it. True, the mirrored window does look cool but is it causing big problems with the remote control sensitivity or are these two machines just poor with their remotes.
At any rate, I just purchased this here (http://www.smarthome.com/8225.HTML). I haven't hooked it up yet but I'll be doing that tonight and will let everyone know how it works.

Tbone2000 11-03-04, 09:16 AM I couldn't be more please with the remote extender. It works awesome. I had two problems, one is that the remote sensitivity is not all that great to begin with and this device definitely improved that. Second is that my cabinet has wood around the outside 2 inches of the door and ultimately the sensor window on the V880N is all the way on the left side of the window so it was pretty much blocked by the wood. It was very easy to set up and now I don't even have to aim the remote, all I do it hold it vertical in front of me and press the button and it works great every time. It's also very fast. My initial concern was, will there be a delay for it to read the signal then re-transmit and their isn't. Also, it will repeat just as the remote is doing so if you hold the volume down it continues to increase or decrease. It's a great little device and at $69 (as shown above) it's still a little pricy but they again, it was $99 and most places have it for between $89 and $99. At the end of the day, I am very pleased and for me it was well worth the money. There is an extension cable for about $45 which as far as I can tell is a 25 foot RCA extension. Why in the world would that be $45. I passed on that and will eventually try a standard off the shelf cord unless I decide I don't need it.
TheDreamer 11-03-04, 11:16 PM Well, I've had my V880N for a couple of days now....yeah, the remote that comes with it is weird and wimpy.
Pretty much have to hold it out and aim just right at it....or it doesn't work.
So, I trained up my Pronto remote...and no problems controlling it from just about anywhere.
Only tried a couple of DVDs with it....was running it 720p component...first thing I noticed were color lines that would pop now and then across the picture....shift it to 1080i component...and it seems okay. Though, my DLP natively is 720p.
Not sure if I'll stay with component or switch to VGA.....but not ready to take the plunge and get a DVI switcher, yet.
Have mainly been using it tap into my iTunes collection....now if only it'll play the protected tracks....
The Dreamer.

Steve,
Glad to hear you enjoy it. Please tell me more about the ability to play VIDEO_TS folders off of you hard drive or USB device. I am looking to back up my collection, and have it read the TS folders. I am running a MAC as well. How do you like the media center software for the MAC? Does it stream MP3s nicely?

The media software seems good to me. This is the first media player I've used so I have no reference. Anyway, you can set the director of where it will look for video files. The default is mydocuments/my videos. You can add additional directors in the media server software. I will see any video files in that directory as well as sub directories which is nice. It seems you can set things up pretty much however you want and it will read them without a problem. I was serving Xvids that were about 700M per 45 minutes of video off my laptop and they worked without a problem. What's also nice is that you can put lots of Xvid, DivX, AVI, MPEG etc on a disc and it will show you what's on it and allow you to choose what you want to play. I like the idea of creating a media library on the hard drive but at a minimum of SVCD resolution your movies will be roughtly 1.5G. That being the case, if you were talking about hundreds of moves that would require at least several really big hard drives. Even if you go for that expense, how do you back something like that up? I like the ability but it seems that the cost would get quite high so for now I put things on regular CD's. Just curious what others are going.

Yes, I started to train the Pronto last night as well and that did seem to work well. Just a curious question, any idea if there are any discrete codes for the letters of the alphabet? I am invisioning a small keyboard layout which would make the internet stuff on the V880N infinitely more usable. My assumption is no but I figured I should ask. Or, maybe Momitsu could add such functionality in to a future firmware if enough people requested it. Probably just hopeful thinking but after it took me several minutes to key in the address for the fireware update I quickly decided that I can't see using the Internet functionality to surf. Or, a wireless USB keyboard would be great which I know was mentioned but never confirmed if something like that would be supported.

Could you go into more details about this mac software? does this let you use iTunes on a Mac and browse & play those music files on the 880N?
I just got my V880N as well. I almost took a month to get it into Canada. Currently, I got the setup to drive my NEC 6PG via the DVI custom setup using the RGB analog output in RGBs mode (the V880N does output composite sync)
My version of firmware is between the original shipping and newest downloadable one from Momitsu web site.
Dreamer, is it possible to share the V880N remote codes those you have captured. I have a Pronto NEO. So far there are no codes for V880N listed in RemoteCentral. Any CCF file would be useful
You can PM me.

Have mainly been using it tap into my iTunes collection....now if only it'll play the protected tracks....

mikemav 11-04-04, 03:30 PM So are you guys saying you are able to run the Neuston MC500 software on the Mac and interact with it on the 880N now? Or is this just a hope? I know the Neuston hardware is based on the same chip as the 880N, but I did not know the 880N would link up to the Neuston server without some hacks? if so, does that mean iTunes music & playlists from the Mac iTunes are available on the 880N?
TheDreamer 11-05-04, 07:51 AM Forgot to mention that I connected my V880N to a switch in the living room...which is bridged to the rest of my network using 802.11g. So far I haven't done much video....(except that it doesn't handle the collection of videos that I currently have it pointed to).
I've been meaning to update my upload on RemoteCentral....
discrete codes for the letters would be nice....didn't think to see if it would take my WebTV keyboard....which the ReplayTV takes. I picked up a WebTV keyboard cheap....plus there's a definition for the Pronto to do it.....

Doesn't seem to play VIDEO_TS files although seems to be a requested feature at the neuston forum so maybe sometime...

Tbone2000 11-05-04, 09:31 AM Just an FYI for those of you looking to use the V800N more with the Internet. I send over the following to Momitsu support:
I have two questions:
1.) Are there any discrete remote codes for individual letters of the alphabet? I was thinking of using my Pronto remote as a small keyboard which would make the Internet functionality of the V880N infinitely more usable.
2.) Alternatively, people have commented that maybe you could connect a wireless keyboard to the USB port but no one has been able to confirm this.
Are either of these two a possibility as the player stands and if not, is it at all possible that they could be added to a future version of firmware?
Thank you for your assistance.
And this was their response:
Currently we do not have the code.
However we will forward your mail to our firmware team.
It might be possible for support it in next firmware release.
It's not clear if this is a blow off answer or if they are really considering it but I thought I would pass it on.
I have also asked them twice about the macrovision and if we can turn it off for copy protected DVD's just like with the V880 maybe with a special code and there has been no response. I wondered if they just didn't answer Email very quickly but the above was sent yesterday and they were very quick to respond. So, looks like they won't comment on the macrovision stuff. Oh well.
grimani 11-05-04, 09:47 PM Just got my V880N - but DVI don't work.
Came with a DVI-D double-link (25pin) cable, hooked everything up, no go...
Anybody know what's up?
I read the JVC manual and it suggested that a DVI-D single-link (19pin) cable was required because it only accepts a single-link signal. (also, no PC hook-up was possible, which makes sense given it only accepts single-link signal).
But doesn't the DVI-D double-link cable also able to carry single-link signal? Do I need to buy a DVI-D single-link cable instead?
Want to figure out the issue before I go out and buy all fifteen thousand different DVI cables out there....Is it an issue with the cable, or something else?
On a related note - anybody know what the DVI settings are for the JVC monitor? If I can't connect a PC to it, I can't do powerstrip...
Thanks..

Hi All,
I wanna buy a new DVD player not only for video. YES! I like to listen music too.
I have found this forum by the words DVD+player+lossless+audio
What type of audio formats supports by Momitsu?
I have visited Momitsu.com, but I found only MP3 from all of audio formats in V880N specification. I have overslept something and MP3 is a standard for music recording now?
Regards
bdowns83 11-08-04, 12:25 PM Very happy with my 880N for video streaming so far. Very consistent, stutter-free playback.
But I'm having serious trouble getting music to stream. I have a hundred or so MP3s and WAV files that all play fine on the local machine. But when trying to stream them, the player displays the music wallpaper and the song banner along the bottom, but no sound- except for one MP3 (a title from SHREK). I don't know how that one file is any different than the rest, other than its file size is only 640k. But I can't see why filesize would matter in this case. A CD in the loader plays fine. Anyone else experience this?
farscape66 11-08-04, 01:06 PM I used the program on the PC and tried the check for new firmware option on sunday and it stated there was no new firmware. Where does this program look for the firmware anyway?

I tried the same at the time of the last firmware release and the PC software said that everything was up to date but it was not. Somewhere, I believe on Momitsu's site it says that you can only update the firmware directly from the V880N connected to the Internet. Can't explain it, can only mention it. At that point I tried the link directly on the V880N and the upgrade worked perfectly.

dschamis 11-09-04, 09:13 AM A couple of questions, with the latest firmware:
- can you do 1080i/720p over DVI from all sources, including "store-bought" DVDs? If so, does it require HDCP?
- can you do 1080i/720p over component with "store-bought" DVDs?

Come on guys - these are easy questions for anyone who has one of these. I'm about to pull the trigger on this, but just want to make sure that this is right.
Also, any talk of doing WM9 HD?
Can I stream captured TS to the V880N for playback ?
David - DVI - haven't used it, so can't comment. Component - yes 720p and 1080i works for your store bought DVD's. WM9 no support and doesn't look likely.
dozens - TS not supported natively as the files are not recognised by the Media Centre I would try converting TS to mpeg.

I have never convert a TS to mpeg before, do I lose resolution ? If I do, then the V880N will upconvert again to 720p right ?
dozens - I use hdtv2mpeg v107 and given how quick the conversion is I doubt it is re-encoding at a lower resolution, but I think you are right the 880N will upconvert to 720p whatever you feed it.
dschamis 11-10-04, 04:31 PM I just pulled the trigger on the V800N - I'm looking forward to getting it.

And, it was great. Except......for when I hit pause (long enough for the screensaver to come on)
After it resumed it was rendering the output into the top left corner of the screen. IE: it forgot that it needed to upconvert to 1080i.

garyfritz 11-14-04, 06:15 PM Does anybody know all the video settings that the TV MODE button cycles through?
It appears that only one or the other but NOT both of the composite-video and DVI outputs are active. I want to be able to switch between NTSC composite video and 720p DVI while I set up my projector. I've got it set to wake up in 720p mode, but I can't see any way to switch to another mode other than cycling through all the modes using TV MODE. That's clumsy and error-prone and probably hard on a multi-sync projector's circuitry. Isn't there some way to directly select a new video mode?
Gary
TheDreamer 11-14-04, 08:48 PM Well, I was getting the horizontal artifacts that I got when my V880N before update on 720p...on 1080i now. So, I tried reverting back to the previous version.
But, that didn't help. So, I guess it is content dependent.....not sure what the fix is.
Anybody?
Here's what I'm talking about.

Also, it would be nice if the time setup would default to a pair of valid NTP servers. time.nist.gov isn't working for the V880N, and time.windows.com is unreliable. Actually I don't use either for my NTP server....though it is kind of a pain entering an IP into the field. Unless there's a secret shortcut to enter a period when in NUM mode....otherwise I switch to NUM to enter the digits and then switch back to ALPHA mode to enter the '.'.

edsuski 11-14-04, 11:23 PM Does anyone know if the latest firmware fixes the RCE issue?
i.e. can you play any of the following DVD's:
Bad Boys II
Final Fantasy The Spirits Within (Disk one only - Disk two plays)
Finding Forrester
Men In Black
Patriot
Spider-Man
S.W.A.T.
Underworld
Also - can you still scale even macrovision encoded DVD's over the analog portion of the DVI-I connection?
Lastly, can you update the firmware without installing the media edition software on a connected PC by simply connecting a DHCP LAN directly to the V880N and requesting a firmware update on the V880N internal set-up menu?
Thanks in advance.

so is anyone found a way to disable macrovision on this player yet??

Even though my situation is an 802.11g WiFi Bridge between my livingroom and my 'computer' room.....with the previous firmware I could stream mpg files, but hadn't tried vob's at that time.
Tried it yesterday with the new firmware....and it was horrible. Revert back and mpg/vob streaming was fine again.

Connect using whatever mode it is currently in, go into the setup menu and change the connection type to the mode you want. And, then change your connections if needed.

If I try the 1080i 50Hz I can not get it in the viewing area of my Themescene H30 projector. I can adjust horizontal and vertical size, normally doe the trick but does the 1080i signal comply to the spec for 1080i or is my H30 not complying to spec.
Anyone else using/tried 1080i and got it displayed right at 50Hz?
By the way, for all you upgraders, visit the http://www.momitsu.com/v880nupdate.html page and bookmark it.
Next on your connected V880n press internet, your bookmarks will be shown, you can easily jump to the V880N upgrade page and try the upgrade! Saves you the typework!

dschamis 11-18-04, 01:55 PM Nick - any idea on timing?
garyfritz 11-18-04, 02:56 PM TheDreamer, do you mean go to the Setup screen (first set of option screens) and change the Video Setting? E.g. change it from 720p DVI to Composite NTSC? I tried that and it didn't seem to change anything. That screen only seems to affect the wake-up defaults. I didn't want to have to restart the player to do this, but I suppose if it's the only way...
(BTW how can I continue the movie after hitting SETUP to get to this screen? PLAY starts the movie over again and none of the other buttons I've tried work.)
Or did you mean to go to the DVI Setup screen and custom-build a signal? That screen is preset for 640x480 and I don't know how to set the various parameters for other resolutions -- any suggestions? Also I think that screen only controls DVI output so you couldn't get NTSC composite out of it, could you?

If I understand you correctly, pillarboxing (4:3 content in correct aspect ratio and with black bar left and right) works by default, no zoom needed..
There is a zoom button and has quite some modes.. like full screen/pillarbox/letterbox

If you're talking about using a 16x9 screen with a 4x3 projector, what you do is create a custom resolution where the vertical height corresponds to a 16x9 display (ex. on my 1024x768 projector I set the vertical height to 576 instead of 768). Then in the V880 setup, the display device should be set to 16x9.
What this does is force all content to display within a virtual 16x9 window of a 4x3 device. 4x3 content will be pillarboxed within the virtual 16x9 window.
garyfritz 11-19-04, 01:10 PM vjren, the zoom on my V880N only zooms in -- the displayed projection area doesn't change, you just see a larger version of the image in the same screen area. That doesn't help to switch aspect ratios. Does YOUR V880N switch between full/pillarbox/letterbox when you hit ZOOM !??
My player doesn't do pillarboxing, at least not properly. With the initial settings 4:3 images play at full width on my CRT & screen, but full 4:3 height too. Which doesn't work since my screen isn't that tall.
So e.g. if I'm displaying a 4:3 DVD, I see a big 4:3 image extending above & below my screen. If I hit ZOOM I get a subset of the DVD image displayed larger, but on the same 4:3 image space.
Does yours do something different?? Maybe I need to change something in the options screens. I experimented with the "Video Zoom" settings on the Options screen and that doesn't seem to affect anything. I changed the"TV Type" on the DVD Setup screen to 16:9, which is supposed to pillarbox 4:3 material. It narrowed the picture, with black boxes on the sides, but it didn't shorten it at all. Images are now squished into a tall/skinny appearance.
Any guesses? How do you have yours set up?
RayH, yes I'm using a 16:9 (actually 1.85:1 but close enough) screen with a CRT projector. The CRT is natively 4:3. Displaying widescreen DVDs, I only display a 1.85:1 piece out of the middle of the CRT face, which maps onto my 1.85:1 screen. The V880N displays 4:3 DVDs on the whole tube face, resulting in picture above & below my 1.85:1 screen. I can create a custom memory setting on the projector to squish the image into the right space, but I thought the DVD player was supposed to do that -- the table on p. 32 of the V880N manual sure implies that it should.

Are you using component or dvi? If dvi what resolution? I normally use dvi with a vga adapter but if I remember correctly, I once tried component and it appeared to be ignoring the TV display type setting and automatically assuming the TV type was 16x9. If your CRT takes computer resolutions, I would try using the dvi output with a custom resolution like I mentioned and it should solve your problem. If you can, you should also be able to create a custom CRT setting which only squashes the image vertically and change the TV type on the V880 to 16x9 which should also work.
The problem is that dvd players are used to having to pillarbox 4x3 content into a 16x9 display device or squeezing 16x9 content into a 4x3 display device but not pillarboxing 4x3 content into a 16x9 window on a 4x3 display device. Setting up a custom resolution or an anamorphic lens is the only way I know of doing this.
garyfritz 11-19-04, 03:02 PM I'm using the DVI-I output with a VGA adapter & 5BNC breakout cable.
Creating a custom CRT setting to squash vertically would work, but I was trying to avoid that. I was hoping the DVD player could squash the image so I wouldn't have to have two separate memories.
I see your point about 4:3 content in a 16:9 window on a 4:3 device. Hm. But I can't be the only CRT user that's run into this. Maybe custom settings to squash vertically are the only answer...
I'm still curious about vrjen's claim that the ZOOM button displays different aspect ratios. vrjen, was that on the V880N or the original V880?

I didn't want to have to restart the player to do this, but I suppose if it's the only way...
Yes...you are hitting save after making the Video Setting change? I've used it to change between Composite NTSC, Component 720p, Component 1080i and DVI 720p...
The change is applied once you hit save...and then I need to switch inputs on my TV to see the results.
(BTW how can I continue the movie after hitting SETUP to get to this screen? PLAY starts the movie over again and none of the other buttons I've tried work.)
Its possible that the movie doesn't allow you to resume from where you stopped. Normally when you press stop it shows the message about having saved a bookmark and says press stop to clear it. After that it will resume from where you left off. Unless you stopped in a place where the DVD won't allow you to resume from. Like some DVDs force you to watch the previews (previews which for some reason they have as letterboxed 4:3 content....while the movie itself is widescreen....so first couple of times I was stopping and starting trying to figure out why the start of the movie [namely the intro sequence...with the horse one...] was coming up letterboxed 4:3 instead of seeing my TV as 16:9....)

I'm also curious...because I can't seem to get this work either. Or I wonder if the DVD can override.
But, I'm not really clear on what the Video Zoom modes are. The "Actual Size" or "Fit to Screen" choices, etc. seem confusing to me. All I want to know is which one should I use.
Oh and, how to recover if the screen saver comes on.

garyfritz 11-20-04, 04:03 PM TheDreamer -- I must have been doing something wrong. Now, when I change the resolution and save the change, the Momo immediately switches to the new resolution. Didn't think it was doing that before, but it is now.
Also, before when I hit SETUP, it went straight to the setup screen. When I hit PLAY it would start the DVD over again. Now, when I hit SETUP, it first says "STOP" and "press STOP to clear bookmark," then when I hit PLAY it says "resuming from bookmark." As you say, maybe the disk I was using before didn't let me resume? But it works now, thanks.
Yes, the screen saver is a real PITA. I've pretty much disabled it for now until I finish setting up my projector.

wrinkols 11-20-04, 05:54 PM The reason some people are saying to hit 'zoom' button to change between display modes is this-
When playing a DVD, hitting zoom zooms in on the content. It leaves the same aspect ratio and just enlarges the content. This is on the assumption that in the settings/dvd options menu you have already specified the aspect ratio which you will be using.
When playing divx, xvid, anyother files as such, if you hit the zoom button it changes aspect ratio or display type. I'm assuming this is because of all the different types and shapes of content that this is the best way. I don't think that there is a way to 'zoom' in on this type of media.

Well, I guess the answer is yes.
I rented "In The Cut" and it wouldn't play. Because my V880N was still on the original default region of '0'. Had to change the region to '1' to get it to play.

Creating a custom CRT setting to squash vertically would work, but I was trying to avoid that. I was hoping the DVD player could squash the image so I wouldn't have to have two separate memories.

Hi, zoom does change aspect ratio, but only on divx.
If your screen is 4:3 and you select letterbox 4:3 screen type your 16:9 dvd is scaled right? And when you play a 4:3 dvd then its still pillarboxed squashed fullheigth in you crt?
I'd say letterbox 4:3 should work in you cfg.
Fiddeld around a bit more this weekend, great to see the ability to have the MMC server running and being able to add a link to my pc-dvd or any other folder on any disc that is mapped to a letter.
Just one thing missing is ability to play a network drive without a MMC server.
I have found that the ability to play ifo's is not implemented because of very strict and expensive licensing.
Will try if selecting a language in a vob is retained when it reaches the next vob.

Thanks for that bit of info. I have wondered why none of the new network media players or networked DVD solutions can support .IFOs. This still leads to the question- didn't they have to get that license anyway since the obviously support .IFO/DVD menus when playing DVD discs? Why is networked DVD file play different? And why can PowerDVD, Zoom Player, and TheaterTek on a PC play back .IFO from network drives? I personally feel the .IFO issue is the only thing holding me back from dumping the HTPC. I wish someone making a set top box player could solve this.

It would be great if it could be implemented! I am in contact with momitsu so will see what is possible. The thing seems that certain parts of the whole ifo decoding is either in hardware thus licenced from sigma or in software from another company, and it is just that dvd-copying on a network drive is dangerous to the (they think..) hollywood industry, because any encryption should be copied to the network drive too.. So Hollywood wants you to have a mechanism so that a dvd copied on network drive is encrypted/protected as is on dvd.
If you try copying one as is, it fails because of cce protection (I think). So a network player would require a cce transparent copying mechanism to a network drive, they don't want to release something like that. It does exist, but only on a well protected network media server with this protection built in.(http://www.kaleidescape.com/) Quite the thing, but expensive..
No way they will alow ordinairy NAS drives to function as a dvd source. (Though it would be cool as a secret feature :) as momitsu sometimes implements these.. )
If I messed up somewhere in my story, or am uncorrect please elaborate..
Hi, I'm new.
I'm giving the V880N some serious consideration. I have a Pioneer 5040HD with HDMI inputs. I also have a DVI to HDMI cable.
Does anyone here have that combination? Also, I have a Linksys CF 802.11B card. Anyone here using that? What about 802.11g?
I have read most of this thread, but I still have quite a bit more to read. If this question has already been asked and answered I apologize. I'm just happy to have found this thread.
Any advice will be appreciated.
sddroog 11-25-04, 08:09 AM Hi,
Finally got my player back. Great service from Momitsu Europe, I just received a brand new player with the scart connector (the previous didn't have the scart connector yet). I had problems with the DVD loader, so I guess they could also just swap the loader. But instead I received a new player.
More great news: it does not have the ugly blue front anymore! And the latest firmware was already factory installed.
Unfortunately there are still no discrete power codes in the latest firmware (as far as I can find). And I have never received any answer to my emails to Momitsu (support@momitsu.com) about this request. Does anybody ever receive an answer on this subject?
Also, I still have problems with the aspect ratio. First of all, the 'Zoom' functions in the setup menu do not seem to do anything. Can anybody explain how this works?
Secondly, I don't want the pillar bars on 4:3 movies, but I like the plasma to take care of the aspect ratio (i.e. so I can use "Stadium" function). There is no way I can make that work except when settings the DVD settings to 4:3. But then my 16:9 movies are being displayed in letterboxed or pan-and-scan mode.
And last but not least, I have some problems with the DVI settings. I have a 1024x768 screen, and if I use the pre-defined 1024x768 settings (50 or 60Hz) or a custom resolution with 1024x768 values, I seem to have a perfect 1:1 pixel mapping. However, depending on the movie there are usually a few lines at the top and bottom of the screen which do not appear very clear. Sometimes it is only happening of the top or bottom line, sometimes it is more. And with a few movies I seem to be missing a few lines on the right and left as well. (I find it difficult to explain, as you have guessed by now English is not my native language).
Am I using the wrong settings? Is there a problem with DVD movie? Is there something I just don't understand? Please help me...
Regards, Stefan.

Zoom function: well, seems to affect divx playing. If is select full screen, that is what i initially get, if I select native, I have to zoom in. On dvd I have to test.

Is it ever right? On denon they complain that the screen is stretched on 4:3 content and now you complain about the right way to display 4:3. This is a feature your tv could have. But the V880N works as it should. Even like this feature better than the stretching players. I don't like stretched 4:3: all females look fat :)
Funny lines: take a picture.. lines missing left or right? you mean pixels or what?
If you have bad lines at the top or bottom of the dvd movie it is source related, just as with the television signal full scale on the tv.

I guess it only works with divx then. I haven't done a lot of divx testing but I will see how this works soon.

No, I don't like the fat females either ;-) I just "assumed" this would be configurable, perhaps with the zoom function. That way the TV could display it like real 4:3, streched or perhaps stadium (or whatever that function is called on your TV).
Funny lines: take a picture.. lines missing left or right? you mean pixels or what?
I will take some pictures later today.

I think it is source related (I see the same bad lines when I play the DVD on the computer). But it looks like 50% of my DVDs have this problem :-(
Isn't there a way to overscan a few lines without dropping the 1 to 1 pixel mapping (thus let the Momitsu do the overscanning instead of correcting it on the plasma?)

garyfritz 11-27-04, 05:52 PM Has anyone had trouble getting the v880N software running? I installed it on my PC (windows 2000) and rebooted. When I try to run it, I get the Momitsu Media Center splash screen, then a dialog box saying "System error [1001]: MMC services could not startup!"
I told it to run the server application automatically at startup, but I don't see anything in the Services list that looks like a MMC.
Any guesses??
Gary
rhsauer 11-27-04, 06:53 PM Gary:
Go to momitsu's site (www.momitsu.com) and download the update to the media center software (version 1.2 I think).
garyfritz 11-27-04, 11:28 PM Aha! Much better. Thanks for the pointer.
I don't have any video files loaded up yet, but I tried displaying a slide show of JPG files. I don't suppose there's any way to get rid of the big obnoxious "SLIDE XXX OF YYY" message that comes up every time you advance to the next photo?
RAVEN56706 11-28-04, 11:11 PM I got my v880n from extremephono and i must say....this player sucks.
I mean if someone can tell me if there are any fixes to my issues then be my guest...
I love the dvd player side to it....
the network side is what sucks...... None of my video files work..... none...... all my avis have unknown video codec and some just dont even show up on the software.
I mean can someone tell me if they have a fix for this or is this just a major mess up
What kind of avis do you have then? I have numerous files on my disc, and I can't remember one file to not work. Other advice would be burn on dvd, try to play?
Instead of saying "this player sucks" it might be appropriate that it doesn't work for you (at the moment?)
What is the source of the avis? (no qpel support so if you converted yourselves in advanced profile then the specs haven't been consulted before you ordered this toy?)
To me it works great, I mean, get some divx, add subtitle file and play on my beamer, works great!
RAVEN56706 11-29-04, 08:16 AM Ok this player is not good for me.
The network side isnt working to par. I have put all of my video files in there AVI's and other, and it isnt picking them up........
I am going to return this toy....
There is nothing wrong with the normal V880N and networking, it all works fine, plug in an ethernet cable to your router with pc connected to it and V880 finds the MMC server when it is installed.
Add a couple of watch folders and I can browse all content on it. I even managed to mount .iso images with a deamon add them to the watchlist and I can play dvd's (vob's that is) before I burn the iso image to disc!
Just don't be hesitant to ask extremephone for support when you can't get it to work.
RAVEN56706 11-29-04, 10:34 AM Extremephono...... there is a guy here that helps from extremephono...
if you hear me or reading this.... i need help.....most of my video files dont play... what can i do
EUuuhm remember, something old fashioned called a phone? Call the guy.. catch the number from your invoice or from the website..
Tbone2000 11-29-04, 11:15 AM Actually, most of my video files play well. I have the most experience with Xvid. True, QPixel format is not support. Perhaps that might be added in a later version of firmware. I do occationally stumble across video files that play fine on the PC and on the V880N the video works perfectly but there is no sound. I haven't figured that out yet but assume it is just a format that is not supported. This is only with some Xvid files but all the SVCD files work perfectly. Anyone have any thoughts on the sound thing? I seem to recall seeing a thread where there was something wrong with the way the player was trying to choose it's audio track although I believe that was a different player. I'm honestly not sure of the format of the Xvid file but if you tell me what to look for and how to look for it then I can do so next time I run in to one of these.
RAVEN56706 11-29-04, 11:38 AM if you can find a phone number on that website... be my guest with providing it because i cant find one.
RAVEN56706: C'mon you must have an invoice with a phonenumber? I don't know it.. Send him a mail?
Tbone2000: Sometimes I had the same as you report. I found that sometimes digital output over spdif is not supported and only analog sound is output, disregarding any setting you made in the settings.
Seems that it can decode it but has no means or possibilities to encode it again to DD/PCM.
So mine is connected analog and spdif, if I get no sound I toggle to analog.

Oh, interesting info. Ok, I will try that. Presently I have a connection only via single coaxial for 5.1 surround but I will also make an analog connection to see if that solves my issue. Thanks.
There's been several mentions of macrovision problems outputting upconverted signals through component video (even a photo of the effect posted).
Has there been a resolution to this? Is it taken care of in the lates firmware?
This seems a major killer for anyone considering this player, as its hard to decide to buy a player with the intention of hooking it up via component video knowing that it will not be able to play some discs (indeterminately).
I'd really like to at least understand the problem better, if not be assured of an immediate solution.
Comments?
Can you give alink to the picture?
As you all know hollywood doesn't want upscaling outputs hence the models all having limitations now.
It is still unclear how that works out for a V880N. Will try later.
