Nice catch on the Random... looks like the "REPEAT" button on the lower left of the remote does cycle through ... repeat one, repeat all, Random, repeat Random and repeat off.

I've been running on the 1018 firmware since I got my v880n. I decided to upgrade to the current 1229 to get the new brightness controls &etc.

I updated OK. Disks play fine. But now if I try to play VOBs over the LAN, they "chatter" and pause every 1/4-1/2 second. The v880n is hooked to the MMC server over a 100mbit hardwired LAN connection, and it never had trouble playing VOBs before.

So I went back to the 1105 firmware. Same problem.

So I tried to go back to the 1018 firmeware. The update fails with an error:
Receiving new image... (it pauses while it downloads)
Invalid link, please try again
System error 0xdead6, <press any key to reboot>

Oh great. I had previously downloaded a copy of the 1018 firmware, "just in case." I've had no luck getting the v880N to look on the local LAN for updates, but I uploaded it to a website and downloaded it from there. Instead of the "updating firmware" you get when you click on the .bin file on the Momitsu update page, the mini-browser just downloaded it, and when it was done downloading it said "ERROR REBOOT" and (fortunately) rebooted without having messed anything up.

So now I can't watch VOBs over the LAN, and I can't go back to the release that used to work. Help??

I went through a similar drill, but mine was shipped with the 1105 software. Severe stuttering on LAN VOBs (and other video files) with that version. Tried the 1229 software and had the same stuttering problem.

Based on previous comments in this thread, I tried the 1018 software and the problem was solved. No stuttering at all. None. I didn't have any problems loading the 1018 software like you did though.

I didn't do anything different to load the 1018 software, so I can't help on that problem.

I just received my Momitsu V880N and it works great except for the one feature I wanted it for - playing HD AVIs. I couldn't find any info on what are the limits on the resolutions for avi files anywhere.

When I play a high definition xvid avi, either through the network or with a burned DVD I get severe artifacting and green squares. Is there any hope that this will be fixed through firmware or is this an inherent limitation of the V880N hardware?

I think everyone here has the same problem when upgrading the firmware..... the big question is has anyone informed Momitsu about it and did they answer?

Actually in the user manual (and i'm pretty sure on the momitsu website) there are pretty specific parameters for various media types of media. Personally, I was stumped for a while on burning dvds. I had about a 25% failure rate. Finally I realized that the momitus site says that the machine doesn't support anything over 4 gigs very well. Now I haven't had any dvd's that won't work.

Momitsu never claimed that HD AVIs could be played. The specs clearly state, MPEG4 resolutions up to 720 x something and up to 3 Mbit/s bitrate on DVD media.

For some reasons even the photos are not displayed in real HD, they are downscaled and upscaled again.

Momitsu calls this player "HD" because it can upscale to HD.

Are you talking about MPEG4 files stored on DVD or about DVD Video? I thought the limitation was for MPEG4 files only. But I had problems with DVD-R Video discs not being recognized and maybe that was due to the disc size...

Yeah I'm talking about DVD video. When I reread the FAQ's today I noticed that it says the 4gig limit is for MPEG4 files. I'm not sure if that's what I previously read or not, but I could've sworn that what I read said it applied to DVD video also. Regardles... since I have change my conversion settings to 3995meg I don't think I have had a single disc turn that won't play. Previously at least 1 of 4 tries was a fail. It seemed to be mainly dependent what it was I was trying to burn (example - it would take four tries of the same content to get one to be playable). So try that and let me know if you have the same problem.

It seems to be worth a try. Right now I have connected an old Pioneer DVD ROM to the Momitsu which doesn't give me that problem anymore, reads everything I throw at it. But it is not a nice solution as the Pioneer doesn't fit into the Momitsu and I had to extend the IDE cable into an external casing.

I actually created HD mpeg2 files out of some photos (one file per photo) which the Momitso played in full 720p resolution over the network. So there doesn't seem to be a limitation. I haven't checked on its ability to upscale network files though.

So hopefully it will be fixed before long. They also fixed the 1018 download so I've got VOBs over LAN working again.

I'm not super knowledgable when it comes to computers so here is my question;

- is it possible to remove the cd rom from the momitsu and plug a hard drive in it's place with the ide cable to achieve higher speeds?

Uh. There is no CD ROM in there, but I'll assume you mean the DVD drive.

Are you actually saying you want to plug a "hard drive" -- meaning a regular old disk -- in there in its place? Why??

Why do you want to increase the speed? Do you want to watch movies at 10x realtime, or what!? The current drive works just fine for playing movies.

Streaming over LAN works a lot better than it's likely to by replacing the DVD drive with a disk. No, I don't think it's possible to put a HD in there.

The IO Data Linkplayer2 actually upconverts everything whether it be commercial DVD's in the DVD drive or files streamed over the network.

- I've read this. I'm thinking about buying the IO Data when they come out with the next version which is supposed to have a lot more desirable features. One HUGE thing holding me back from purchasing this player now or in the future is the region locked dvd drive. Since the vast majority of the dvd's i own are region encoded (non US) I would have to convert all my dvd's or find something else to do. Actually on the IO thread I'm pretty sure that one of the guys has both the IO and momitsu. I haven't read enough in there to really get much out of it, but if you are really interested then it may be worth your time. The main feature i'm interested in is the USB 2.0 port that the IO has. I like to take my player places along with my harddrive but the momitsu's USB 1.1 port just doesn't keep up with videos; especially if they have subtitles (xvid with srt) must the time it's just unwatchable.

I thought that that person only had the older V880 and not the V880N
??? I could be wrong. Also I thougth he had a digital display and not a CRT projector? Us folks with CRT projectors need the RGBHV output.....

That's probably right. I don't know how many people would buy two players which are potential identical (they aren't, but close enough). Like I said, I haven't read too much of it.

you can just set the region code to zero. it will play everything. no other convert needed

I was under the assumption that the player was region locked. That's what other people made it sound like. It would be nice if it could be changed.

yes. it's a region free player. for law and policy, they could not actually make it public and obvious that it's region free. but you can defintely modifiy the region code any way you want.

That's pretty cool then. Actually I love my Momitsu. I'm don't want to get rid of it. I need to buy a computer though so i'm going to be listing her on ebay or something. Sucks especially because momitsu said they'll replace it with a brand new shiny one. But hopefull when i make up my mind and repurchase in a while they'll have everything worked out.

Has anyone had trouble with their v880N losing its TV Mode setting? My v880N was sometimes not responding well to the soft-poweron button, so I've gotten in the habit of powering it off when I'm done, and getting a fresh hard-boot the next time I want to use it. Occasionally it hangs on boot-up, and sometimes it forgets it's supposed to be on DVI 720p. Is this common?

And on bootup, long cables do not synch to well on high resolutions.
Would be nice to have an automatic boot to 480/576 then switch to 720/usersetting mode.

I can not explain why this is, bit I know a short cable is the fix.
and when in a boot safe mode like 480P you CAN go to a higher res.

Has anyone had problems with their V880 playing SVCDs? I have two V880s and one plays them with no problem, but the other will not output any audio. (It plays DVD-Rs just fine.)

vjren, I have only 5 meters of high-quality Belden 1505A RGBHV cables. No DVI, I'm just using the RGB output of the DVI-I output.

VPN Client and 880N Client Incompatibility (as best I can tell)

The 880N and PC (XP SP2) would not connect until I removed, deinstalled from the PC, the CheckPoint VPN client.
Closing the VPN client was not sufficient, it had to be removed. I tried two times, including reboots, w/o luck.
Maybe the VPN client is leaving something in memory/cache? I did not run the systems monitor to see if the VPN client really was shut down. I'll try looking for clues there. Any other thoughts and ideas will be appreciated.

I had asked late last year and received a similiar response.

I had posted this in a separate thread but I'll ask here as well. I upgraded to the latest firmware for the V880N (08-41-0412229-01-MMS-108-000) that include the new settings for brightness, contrast, and saturation. However, after I adjust the brightness, contrast, or saturation, it only stays persistent until you stop the currently playing DVD or power off. After pressing stop or power cycling the unit, the video settings go back the default of 55 for brightness, contrast, and saturation. Is everyone else experiencing this same problem?

I can not upgrade to the latest firmware as the network playback does not function correctly.

Perhaps the next firmware update will fix all these problems?

Fireball -- I don't think that the settings reverting to 55 after each disk is a problem -- I think it's supposed to work that way. Brightness, contrast and saturation should be set, generally, on your monitor -- and only adjusted on a disk by disk basis on the player.

Since it doesn't appear to be documented anywhere, has anybody figured out the navigation & other remote options while playing VOBs over the network?

I've found this much:

* FFwd / FBwd work, though they do an incredibly lame 1/2/3/4x instead of the 8/16/32/48x you get on DVDs. (WHY!??)

* The Menu button puts you into a SLOW mode (!??).

* Next / Prev work to skip from one VOB to another, but only if you say "Play All" instead of selecting an individual VOB.

* The numeric buttons move you to a % through the VOB. E.g. hit "4" to move to 40% of the way through the VOB. If you hit the left/right arrows fairly soon after the number, you can increment/decrement e.g. to 41%, 42%, etc.

* Much to my surprise, I found that if I hit the SETUP button, I got a bright/contrast/saturation display -- and this is the 1018 firmware!! I thought this didn't get added until later? But I couldn't figure out any way to change the values.

Nothing else seems to work. Am I missing anything?

My Media Server Software hourglass just keeps going and going like the Energize bunny when I load it. I can connect to my network from the Momitsu and play files, but I can't change any of the options because I can't get the software to finish loading. I uninstalled and reinstalled--even cleaned the registry of all entries. I tried booting in safe mode and with the diagnostics mode from msconfig (I have WinXP). Any ideas?

- check your player IP (IP conflict maybe, try different IP)
- check network mask and gateway!

If this is all right, try to set default IP settings then reboot the player.
Make new settings again.

- if you have a player connected through firewall router, check access rights.

- deinstall ANY EXISTING Java!
- install MMC again.

Tried that already and it didn't work.

Few questions.

1. Is there anywhere a real user guide for this baby? I mean like what it can do in different modes? Like how to jump to certain points in the movie when you are watching Divx from the DVD drive or from the network. Or for all other combinations as the functions are changing depending on what we are trying to do.

2. Momitsu MMC on Linux. How to configure it.
How to set up you own specific folder for video files.
(Changing the values of VideoPath field in supplied XML file doesn't affect the behavior of MMC.)

Same thing. And I can run the software with no problem from my laptop, which is also connected to the same network, so there is something about the computer I'm trying to run it on that is the problem. And I would have thought running in Safe Mode or with Diagnostics in msconfig would have yielded a clue, but same thing there. I even took every PCM card out except video--same thing. It is very strange (and frustrating).

I think I'll try an XP re-installation first as that's a lot easier than a fresh install. I don't think its the motherboard bios because this worked at one time for awhile when I first installed it. I hadn't used it for a month or so, so something I did in that time is the problem, but I can't isolate it. Of course, it also could just be a corrupt Windows file as well.

BTW--does anyone know where I can get a hold of an extra remote for this machine? We could not get the remote codes to work in the RTI remote and RTI wants the remote so they can send me a file. This is the remote:

I don't want to send the remote I have because its the only one I have and you can't operate the DVD player without it. I e-mailed Momitsu figuring they'd want to do this to broaden their compatability with universal remotes but got no response. :mad:

I also just e-mailed extremephono (where I bought it) so maybe he'll help! :)

But if not, any other ideas? I guess I could overnight the thing and get it back pretty quick, but I'm worried about it getting lost or damaged then trying to get one from Momitsu to replace it.

I don't know--I e-mailed it to the audio-visual people and they said they needed to send the remote to RTI. I'm thinking I should e-mail that file to RTI instead as they probably know what to do with it. I'll try that as I had forgotten about that--thanks A/Vspec. I would think that is all they need. But one day, my machine went in the silent. There was no sound at all.
I must mention that I didn't make any changes in my system.

I tried the sound card on my second PC and it worked!

So, I made just silly thing:
I flashed the bios with the same bios I had already on my PC.

I agree it may work, but flashing the bios to me should be a last resort--it can be dangerous and cause problems of its own. I wouldn't recommend flashing bios unless someone knows (i.e., a known bios problem) or is highly confident that's the problem. I would try EVERYTHING else first. I would bet that it isn't the BIOS in this case so I shouldn't be flashing it, but it may come to that! ;)

My v880N has recently started stuttering/jumping when playing VOBs. This seems to happen only at scene changes. I assume that's because there's a big spike in data transfer rate when the whole screen changes, vs. incremental changes.

I have this thing on a 100mbps LAN. There are two LAN switches between the v880N and my PC, but both of them report 100mbit connections on all legs.

I never had a problem with this before. I think it may have started when I was changing firmware revisions, but I'm currently back on the 1018 firmware I originally had, so I don't know why it would do it now but it didn't do it then.

It doesn't do this all the time, nor on all movies. I first noticed it when watching Kundun, a nicely-photographed widescreen movie with 31.8MB per minute (530 kB/sec). I haven't seen it on animated stuff like Monsters Inc., which (surprisingly) has a HIGHER data rate -- 48.5 MB/min (809 kB/sec).

Any guesses?

quick question, anyone get avi's and same name srt's to play over network? do I need to burn these to disc or click some option to play subs? Momitsu lead me to believe they played automatically but they apparently don't....tks for any info

EDIT: new firmware seems to have fixed it....

I installed the new beta firmware - from some very quick testing, it looks like they finally fixed the stuttering network playback issue. This is the first firmware since 07-87-041018-01-MMS-108-000 that has had smooth playback of high bitrate files over the network on my unit.

I did not test the problem of long delay during shuffled playback, since I never knew how bad the delay was with the earlier version and have nothing to compare it to.

The problem I've had all along of digital 'pop' sounds on optical and coax out when changing chapters, starting playback, etc. has not been fixed. I haven't seen any other problems yet but only loaded it about 15 mins ago.

Have people also noticed that the region settings have been removed?
Has anyone tested the new BETA firmware with any extra region protected media?

I have Panasonic PT-50LC14 monitor connecting to momitsu v880 N with DVI cable.

Any help on what should I use for DVI settings for this combination to give me the best PQ?
Should I use one of those Momitsu preset modes such as DVI 720p or I should use custom DVI settings? If custom what those should be? I could not find anything other that 1280x720 is the native resolution.

Will I have to change the DVI setting depending on the source I am trying to play? Such as DVDs or DIvX etc.?

Your Panny has a 1280x720 native resolution. The default 720p ought to do just fine. I don't know how sensitive LCD displays are to refresh rate, though.

Can someone a little more knowledgeable tell me the differnce between theV880N and the Buffalo Techonlogies PC-P3LWG/DVD player? They look to have almost the same features, the screen captures look like the software is similar. The Linktheater has shipped with sigma's EM8620L chipset (Is that better or worse than the v880n?) and and it is also UPnP 1.0, seems to come with a DVI cable yet the buffalo technologies player seems to be at a lower street price?

I am kind of new to this, I mean I have had a govideo d2730 and oritron networked dvd player for a long time now, but these seem not onlyto offer a much wider variety of file formats, but the fact they can stram VOB files and also output HD is a hugeplus. Now the question for me what is the better value between the two player? Can someone shed some light on this for me?

I believe the EM8620L can decode hidef WMVs (720p) whereas the EM8550 in the V880N can't.

I can confirm Internet Radio is not working and get identical problem as A/Vec. I'm running MMC 1.3 on Windows XP SP2 with all MS updates as of 2/26/05. Tested with and without firewalls turned on at the workstation and at the router edge. Also, tested with MMC running under an Admin acount and a standard account with no deltas. This feature used to work.

But the problem appears to be a MMC problem vs a 880N firmware problem. I think this because when I point a browser on my workstation on which I'm running MMC to itself (e.g. http:// 192.168.1.104:8000) and then browse to the Internet->Radio or Internet->Web I get the message "Cannot connect to the Internet". If I have time, I'll uninstall MMC v1.3 and reinstall 1.2 to test.

Hopefully this is a workstation configuration issue and not a MMC or 880N firmware issue. Anybody have any suggestions?

I also get the "Cannot connect to the Internet" message. This is on 1018 firmware and 1.2 MMC. I never used the Net Radio &etc features so I never noticed it. I have no problem connecting to the firmware update page.

I think it might be the 1.2 MMC and will try and install the earlier version and see if that fixes it...

Tried the latest firmware as well. Momitsu did fix the network playback problem. The firmware is all region but the player still have problem playing back RCE disk such as Final Fantasy. I did not find a problem with network radio. It worked as before. My MMC version is 1.2 on WinXP.

Does this refer at all to the formats for avi? What I mean is that I can not view QPIXEL or GMC (at least I believe it was GMC but I might have a letter wrong). It basically tells me that the format is not supported. I figured that at some point they would add support but maybe it's more complicated than that.

No at all, GMC & QPEL are not related to firmware upgrades, even it cant be decoded by software on a PC, the Momitsu device can't because the processor was to slow to decode theses extensions of xvid encoder, then please leave theses flags unchecked in you preferred DVD Ripper software ...

Ok, I understand. My friend gave me some files by groups named FICO and I think the other was MMCA which I guess just won't work. I wonder what they were created for? Oh well, no big deal, I was just wondering.

Does someone experiencing the "stop and go" effect when playing DivX files over the network.
Both video & audio just pause for a second then goes on playing just fine. Until it does it again. Sometimes the pause is a little longer may be 2-3 seconds.


I don't think it's network related, I tried playing the same files from ISO DVD and had the same problem.
The same files from the same server over the same network set up playing fine with I-O Data Link Player.


I also have problem with V880 N not recognizing some of my DVDs, but I think it's loader related.

Should I bother Momitsu(Atacom) or just replace loader with Lite ON which with delivery is only $25?

is just great, I mount an iso file share it and I can play the complete dvd without worrying about the VOB files. Even maintains the subtitle selected.

The "LinkPlayer2 open source server" does work with the V880N and guess what.... the Internet radio works with it. I have not figured out all the bells and whistles of the software but so far I like what I see. There is cover art showing up when I playback my MP3s and I think there might be a way to show DVD cover art? Not sure yet but once I get it all figured out... or if someone else has already...

Finally, Momitsu have released the MS-R5 RAID media storage. Will hold up to 1.6TB and will pair up to the V880N.

Anyone seen one in the flesh. Price???

momitsu.nl have price for the MS-R5 1.6TB as being around 2884 euro's with shipping and VAT to UK, with the 1TB version being 1813 Euros appx

Not cheap considering cost of 5 x 250GB SATA drives is only £500 quid or so.

I'm fooling with using my projector for slide shows. I'd also like to display GIFs with test patterns on them for projector alignment &etc. But my photo quality is lousy, and test patterns are unusable, because the v880N scales the images.

I'm running the v880N in 16:9 mode, 720p 60Hz. I have my CRT projector set to display 720p. 16:9 movies display fine, filling up my 16:9 screen.

I unchecked the "Enable photo scaling" box under MMC Edit -> Preferences -> Photo. I put a set of pictures in the Photo Library directory. The MMC finds them, and I can display them from the v880N. I generated 1280x720 GIFs, which should fill the screen just like a 16:9 movie. But the v880N scales them, squeezing them about 15% more vertically than horizontally. The 1280x720 image doesn't fill anywhere near the whole screen.

How can I get the v880N to display a 720-line GIF in 720p mode without scaling?

Also, is there any way to flip from one picture to the next without the obnoxious "SLIDE XXX OF YYY" message?

Gary, the video memory in the V880 is 720x576, then hardware scales it to the right resolution.

No way a native anything can be unscaled portrayed at a res. of 720.

I got full screen display pictures running though, Quite nice in the 720x576 resolution, I used the open source link server wizzd.

Hm. vjren, where do you learn things like this? Is it documented anywhere? Any idea how to get rid of the "SLIDE XXX OF YYY" message?

So I need to scale my pics to 720x576 for them to look right. That kinda stinks. That says there is no way to display accurate-to-the-pixel images the way you can with a "real" HTPC.

I tried creating a 720x576 GIF with lines and circles. It filled the screen OK vertically, but it was still not scaled right. It was 16.2% wider whan it was high. 720x576 is a 1.25:1 AR. Are you sure you have that right? There are a bunch of possible ARs that it might be looking for: 1.33, 1.5, 1.78. And if 720x576 isn't right, who knows what is. I don't have time to experiment with all the possibilities to try to stumble onto something that might work right. Help??

This 576-line thing doesn't affect DVD playback, does it?? 576 lines would be a very odd size to choose, and it would impact the scaling quality no matter what final resolution you used. E.g. it wouldn't be possible to display 480p or 960p (or anything else) without scaling artifacts if it had to go from 480 through 576 first.

But you are right as well, the momitsu is not designed to play them, it seems to be limited in the number of source pixels, even if the video file has a low bitrate. The normal effect with 720p video files is that you might see parts of the first frame(s), the rest of the screen gets filled with some colors and the system seems to hang.

So, I played around with shorter video files (made from 16:9 photos), mpeg2, up to 5 or 6 frames of length, reduced the bitrate to something like 4000kbps and finally got a complete, full 720p resolution picture which was perfectly played via MMC for about one second. If someone is really interested in this and has some experience in mpeg encoding feel free to PM me for more details. As I am currently relocating from Asia to Europe and my momitsu is being shipped in a container I can't do more testing ATM.

Gary, why not just use the DVE or AVIA DVD disc for your test patterns?

For one thing, the DVD is just 480 lines. The upscaling results in fuzzy lines on the screen and I'd rather have sharp full-resolution lines for converging.

For another, I've discovered the Avia patterns have caused me to set up my Momo and CRT projector *wrong*. CRTs are very flexible in their setup. I had mine set up with a 4:3 raster, then I set the Momo to "4:3 letterbox" display mode. That's what it took to get the Avia patterns to fill the screen. Unfortunately that also meant 4:3 movies didn't fit on my screen, VOB playback was never the right size, etc. I recently switched my CRT to a 16:9 raster size, and set the Momo to 16:9 mode -- essentially telling the Momo it was now talking to a 16:9 display, which it basically was. This works much better for almost everything. But because Avia is a 4:3 title, it now gets letterboxed, and the test patterns no longer fill the screen! Urgh...

So there's no way to display full-res photos, short of creating MPG files out of each one!? Yeesh...

Sorry. Your best bet would be to get one of the new players (I/O Data Linkplayer/ Buffalo) that playback the photos in there native rez? Or so they say? I would be interested to see what would happen if you threw those pics at them.

PC with software with IP 192.168.1.10

Otherside of the house

Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge (linksys) WET54G
with the 880N connected (192.168.1.10:8000)
IP 192.168.1.15
SUBN 255.255.255.0
GW 192.168.1.1

I can see the IP of the bridge but not the one of the 880N

What have I tried:

-880N in manual or automatic mode ( I get a 169. address instead of 192.)

bretak - i'm having the exact same issues with my 880N.

I've got a Linksys WAG54G (wireless modem/router) upstairs with 3 PC's hardwired to. Downstairs i have a Linksys (spotting a common theme here :) ) WAP54G wireless Gateway.

Attached to this i have my Xbox which works perfectly fine, but if I connect the 880N, then nothing.

I've found that if you connect a hub or switch to the wireless AP/Gateway and plug the V880N/Xbox into the switch, then the V880N works fine.

It just doesn't work when directly connected to the Linksys device. 880n work fines directly wired to the WAG54G also.

I emailed Momitsu tech support and they were going to go an purchase one of the WAP45G in order to test it. I've not heard anything back from them yet (30 March) but i've not chased them either.

will email and ask for update etc.

I use DVDshrink to rip VOBs from my DVDs and play them on my v880N. I've noticed that the v880N often chooses a different audio stream from the VOB than it does from the DVD. For example if I pop the DVD in the drive, I get the movie in English. If I rip the VOB and play it on the v880N, I get Chinese (Hero), director commentary (Winged Migration), etc.

I can get the normal audio stream using the AUDIO MODE button. But that's a bit of a pain. Am I ripping the VOBs wrong or something?

Gary just select the one audio track you want when ripping the dvd, get rid of all the other audio crap and the Momitsu can't select another track if there is only one :D

FWIW, I have my 880N connected to the Linksys Wireless Gaming Adapter WGA54g, and it works pretty well. I don't know what I've done that you haven't, so I'm not going to be much help getting your equipment to work. I have a D-Link 646 wireless router, and before I got that, it was working well with a Linksys 54g access point. My point is, it does work.

I had to connect the gaming adapter to my notebook to get it to connect wirelessly and to configure WEP. It was a real pain -- it didn't work, it didn't work -- and then, suddenly and inexplicably, it did work. When I switched to the D-Link I had to go through the setup again, and had the same experience. I can't believe this technology, which has been around for relatively a long time now, is still so hard to configure. How are people who aren't geeks ever supposed to use it?

I occasionally find that I have to power cycle the gaming adapter or the V880N, or both, to get them to connect, but not too often (just, usually, when I have people over and want to show it off).

I have the WET54GS5 and it works fine with my V880N and the antenna is actually broken..... grrr damn roomates

Hi guys

First apologies for my newbie questions. I have a pioneer 435xde plasma and took delivery of the momitsu 880n DVD player this weekend. Whilst I can successfully connect the player to the plasma via composite or scart.. i've had absoutely no luck in getting any picture (even the DVD player's menu screen) through component. I have enabled the input on my plasma to accept component and cycled through all the output video modes on the DVD player but no picture or sound etc just a blank screen?

I have also repeatedly checked that I have the cables plugged incorrectly. Can anyone shed any ideas as this is driving me crazy.

I guess I should get a DVI-HDMI cable and plug it through that way, but im now getting paranoid about whether the component plugs on my plasma receiver are actually working or not.

Question on playing VOBs over a LAN:

I rip my DVDs using DVDshrink. That produces a directory full of ~1GB VOBs. I just concatenate them together and everything works fine.

But every once in a while I get a "hiccup" in the picture. There is a slight jump and it appears a few seconds get missed.

At first I thought this was due to bandwidth problems on the LAN, which surprised me since it's a 100mbit connection. It happens at certain scene changes, and I assumed that was because there was a big jump in information content with a whole new scene. But then why wouldn't it do it at EVERY scene change? So that didn't make sense.

I also thought it might be at the 1GB VOB boundary, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It happens too frequently for that.

Today I noticed that it only happens at specific spots. I tried turning on the Info display, and sure enough the time counter resets to zero precisely at the "hiccup" point. There is something happening there (chapter mark, I dunno) that resets the timer and causes the problem.

Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong when I rip the DVD? Has anybody else encountered this and figured out a solution?

To make the player Region Free (aka Multizone) in any dvd screen without disc in the unit press:
"pause"
"1"
"2"
"3"
"4"

In regard of Macrovision - V880N will output 720p and 1080i with any DVD via component and DVI.
However users can not disable the macrovision for DVD recording using V880N.

V880/ V880-DX can output 720p and 1080i for recording - means you can turn Macrovision OFF.

FWIW: I thought I had found the solution to the "playing the wrong audio stream" problem I mentioned earlier. DVDshrink has a feature to specify the stream you're supposed to play -- right-click the title in the "DVD Structure" window, and select "Set Default Streams..."

Unfortunately it doesn't work. :( I just tried re-ripping Spiderman 2 and specifying AC3 5.1 English as the default. No good. The v880N still plays the Director's Commentary as the default. Other players play the English soundtrack by default, but the v880N is contrary. Grr.

So I guess I'll have to stick with Gary M's recommendation and pitch everything but the 5.1 English. But I WANT to keep the director comments in there... sure would be nice if the v880N would WORK right!!

C'mon folks, throw me a bone here. Yes or no, does anybody else see skips at (I think) chapter marks? It's enough that I occasionally miss a word or two of dialog, and the music/sound skips for a second. I'd really like to figure out if there's something I'm doing wrong that I could change to avoid this.

Yes. The only problem I've noticed on the February release is the "skip at chapter mark" problem. No stuttering.

Come to think of it, if this new firmware doesn't solve it, maybe I'll try the October bits...

Yes. When you are in the DVI setup screen. press "9 7 1 3"
it will open up a screen where you can customize the DVI resolution anyway you like

Well, I upgraded to the new 050426 firmware (from the 041018) and played an AVI over my network and no problems with that. So, at least that is good.

Then I wondered if the RCE problem has been fixed and whether I could switch the region back to 0. Except, that when I went to DVD Setup there was no Region button. I guess that means it is fixed, right?

I guess I'll find out...or not... when I come across a disc with RCE from NetFlix. Pretty much right now all I use the player is to play DVDs from NetFlix and these AVI files that materialize in Video Watch Folder ;)

Though I'm contemplating order DVDs from the UK for my collection....

Gary, I played a DVD using the "27 April 2005" firmware and did not notice any skip-at-chapter problem. This was in region 4.

Could your problem be hardware? Could be worth contacting your retailer.

Mantorok, it's not a DVD problem. DVDs play just fine. It happens when I play VOBs over a LAN. I didn't realize that chapter marks would be present in a VOB (especially since you can't jump to them, at least with the Momitsu), but it appears to happen at chapter marks.

The new firmware seems to play music files better. Pause between next song is faster when using shuffle play or just hitting next track button. Have not tried movie playback yet but will test out today an post results.

Well I have been trying VIDEO playback and thus far everything has been very jerky. It just locks and play, locks and plays... does this anywhere from 4 to 9 times and then plays ok for awhile and then does it again. I tried down grading to earlier firmware versions but I have the same problem?

Going to have to check all my network and server settings and make sure everything is going ok.

Yes, I would. I have 100mbit LAN connections on mine, and I have no pause/stutter problems with any of the recent firmware releases. Other than the chapter-mark skip I keep carping about and nobody else seems to see....

But haven't een able to successfully complete a loader update. I power on de player, insert the cd and nothing happens (loading, tray never opens as it should according to the PDF). I tried several CD's, burnt on 4 speed with the latest Nero on different computers.

My Q's:
- Are there any known issues with the update?
- How can I see update progress (I see nothing)
- How long should it take?
- How can I check the loader version?
- Will this loader version solve incompatibility issues with home made DVD copies? They all play fine on other dvdrom players, but some just "hang" the 880N after I press play (the only thing left to do is switch the player on/off by the power button)? The least I expect to see is some erorr messgae if the player has problems with a disc!

I had the same problem. I was able to perform the update by pointing the DVD player's browser (accessed by pressing the URL button on the remote) to www.momitsu.com/v880nupdate.html and pointing the cursor to the file I want to update to.

No, I am talking about the loader update, not the regular Firmware update (which works fine over the network).

I tried the same update following the procedure you did (as documented on the Momitsu website).

I got the same results as you - no indication that the update was taking place at all. After I insert the update CD, the drive spins for some time but no activity occurs. I also noticed in the PDF instructions that there is a reference to the V880DX and the screens shown for checking the loader version do not match the V880N at all. I've checked all screens, there is no way to tell the current loader version on my V880N either.

I tried burning the loader CD at 1X on both Nero on the PC and Toast on a Mac (it can read and burn Nero images) - no difference - the loader update seems to fail in either case.

I am creating some DVD's for further testing as well.

I just did the loader firmware upgrade and I think it worked for me. Perhaps I can answer some of your questions:

You can't. I guess it is a complete internal loader thing, not under control of the V880N hardware or firmware.

- How long should it take?

After inserting the disc it read the disc for about 5 seconds. Then the disc was ejected, I removed the disc and after about 10 seconds the disc tray was inserted again. I removed the power and that was it.

- How can I check the loader version?

I haven't found a way to check the previous of current version of the loader firmware, so that's why I can't be a 100% sure it worked....

- Will this loader version solve incompatibility issues with home made DVD

I have the same problem. I will do some more testing and hopefully I can give you an answer to this question in a couple of days.

On the V880N the loader update seems not to load, the disc is shown as media and not automatically ejected. It does work on my old V880 though.

Well, this is interesting....I tried the loader update on my V880N. And, everything happened as the document said would (the automatic eject after it read the disc, and later the automatic close....)

Only I don't know how to confirm the loader version on the V880N.

But, what I found interesting...I happened to be scrolling through the different setup options...and happened to select "Update ROM" and check for new version.

And, there's a new version....May 17th, 5:00pm. Which doesn't show up on the http://www.momitsu.com/v880nupdate.html page (nor the http://www.momitsu.com/dvd_880nfirmware.html). I wonder if I should update to it?

I'm a v880 owner, who thought about upgrading to the "N" version (but didn't). With the new "network ready" PS3 announced, I'm now very curious...

what part of networking your DVD player did you find most useful?

are you able to surf the net with your DVD player?

You probably could (though you'd probably want a way to hook up a keyboard/mouse if you were going to do that) but I don't. The only time I ever hit the internet with my v880N is to update the firmware.

I use the network capability to play movies across my local LAN. I copy disks onto my PC and watch them from the v880N. This works great to "TIVO" rented disks. When I'm at the rental store, I rent disks that look good. I copy them onto the PC and return the disk. When I have some free time I watch them, then delete the file. That way I've always got a selection of movies to watch, without having to run to the rental store or watch them right away when I rent them. Very convenient.

It wouldn't be ethical to copy rental disks and keep the copy, but I don't see any moral difference between "renting today and watching tonight" and "renting today and watching next week."

I don't know if there is a keyboard/mouse option for the V880N....there is a browser on it...and it is possible to use the number pad of the remote to type short urls (the main one that I typed was to get updates.) Now I just use bookmarks when I do browse.

Too bad it doesn't do realvideo or other forms of streaming content from websites.

I originally got it because of the iTunes feature that was advertised....but I only played a couple of tracks to see what it could do, and haven't done that since. I also wanted to try playing archived shows from my ReplayTVs....but for that I prefer my ReplayTV for playback.

What finally happened..was that when I returned from Xmas holidays...I missed the premier of Alias (from OTA HD, though I'm only recording the SD output from the box), because I had forgotten to check if my antenna needed adjusting....after a winter snow storm that had hit while I was away. So, I was pointed to a DivX file of it....

Now I use it as backup for shows that I missed...the most recent because American Idol ran long last night....so I missed the ending to "Stacked" ;)

I'm a v880N owner. My Player arrives a few days ago. The Function of the Player is brilliant. But the loudness of the Drive-Motor is incredible! Always when i Play a DVD or CD a squealing sound is to ear. I think the Drive-Motor of the Player is defect! In quiet scene of a DVD Movie, the squealing sound is to hear all over the room!

Have someone the same or other experiences with the noise from the v880N Player.

I think you are right about the Drive-Motor being defective. I sit about 3 feet from my v880N when i watch DVDs and I have never noticed the mechanical sounds from it while it is playing a movie.

Well just fir ships&giggles I decided to go ahead and try the new firmware update.

It seems to work just fine for both Music and DVD playback via the DVD drive and network drive.

I have not found anything new in the firmware but still have trouble with the Momitsu server software (and Buffalo) connecting to the internet were the MMC1.3 works just fine for internet access.

I use my V880N in a dedicated home theater environment. To make the experience as "movie theater-like" as possible, I stream movie trailers befor the "feature presentation" the overall effect is just what I wanted to achieve with one large exception. At the start of every trailer, the file name is displayed in large letters on the screen, along with text stating this is file 2 of 4 being played (for example). really ruins the effect.

I contacted momitsu and the silence from them was deafening. Does anybody here know how I can turn off this incredibly annoying feature?

That seems to be the same firmware that now shows up about after doing the Loader Update....from the "Update ROM" screen in Setup.

Sounds like all the EZ Update feature is that now the "Update ROM" screen works (where before it would never find anything)....probably for the people where the Loader Update CD method doesn't work???

Doesn't seem to be a compelling reason to make me upgrade....prefer updates that I know address some issue I'm having, and know won't break anything that used to work.

Which at the moment, I don't know of any issues bothering me.....well, except that the subtitle option doesn't work, because even though I set english, it always defaults to none.

New version still has some issues with next track during music playback. Click next track and it pauses like it is going to play it then it keeps playing the same track for awhile before then going on to the next track.

That, and the fact that it seems impossible to display jpg's without rescaling that totally destroys the picture clarity, makes the v880N useless as a "slide projector." Like you, I pestered support@momitsu.com 4 times over the course of a month about this, and was totally ignored.

At least there is a workaround for your trailer problem. You can just concatenate the trailers onto the front of the VOB file. E.g. go into a DOS window and run "copy /b trailer1.vob+trailer2.vob+movie.vob MovieAndTrailer.vob".

For dvd streaming I recommend the open source link server, it plays even DVD chapters, it might even improve your photo scaling, because it can set the resolution.

vjren, I take it you are talking about wizd? What version is that up too? I have it installed on my server but I can not get to much to work on it. I do know the internent connection works on that when it fails on MMC and the Buffalo server one.

Does wizd do internet radio? Can it do slide shows with music playback?

I just installed wizd. It works better for photo display because it can scale the pictures to un-do the ~18% horizontal stretch that seems to be endemic in the v880N. Photo quality is still not great but that may be unavoidable due to all the scaling going on.

For DVDs you can select titles in the VIDEO_TS directory, but you can't use the DVD menu navigation nor can you select a chapter directly. There doesn't seem to be any way to play a title without seeing the "CHAPTER XXX" message at every chapter mark. Not what I want in the middle of a tense scene.

I haven't tried internet radio. Yes, it can do slide shows with music.

I may leave both MMC and wizd running on separate ports. The v880N sees both of them. I'll use MMC for movie display (no advantages in wizd that I can see) and use wizd for slide shows.

vjren, what wizd settings did you use for JPG display? (resolution, widening, etc) 720x576, right?

I set the resolution to my 1024x576 projector. using wizzd server yes.

I am running 1280x720 on my CRT FP so I would like pics scaled to that.

I would like to have slide show run when playing MP3's from my server and also when playing internet music.

And I would like to have DVD folders show up or let me group them all a certian way like by genre?

In any case, there's no way to fit it to an existing unit, short of hacksaws, hammers, etc.

In fact, I've just checked the ".com" website and all reference to the input module have been removed, though it's still on the Dutch site (at the moment).

Mantorok, it's not a DVD problem. DVDs play just fine. It happens when I play VOBs over a LAN. I didn't realize that chapter marks would be present in a VOB (especially since you can't jump to them, at least with the Momitsu), but it appears to happen at chapter marks.

I'm having this problem as well.

Is there a way to remove the chapter markers out of a VOB? I thinking that would fix it but I just can't find a tool that does it.

You are not the only one. I have the problem too but only if I am using the DVI out from the Momi -> Ae700. Component out works well and is what I am currently using.
When I use DVI, every now and then it Blanks (the projector actually gets a no signal for a second then it comes back) It always happens in the same spots (its not random). If I record the DVD to the PC and play it through the momi from the network it also does it at the same point.

I managed to get a reply from Momitsu saying that I should use the default DVI settings (ie select the inbuilt 720P DVI) rather than Custom ones, but it makes no diff. It has nothing to do with scan rates or frequencies etc.

I have given up on DVI out for now.. and I am waiting for a better network player to come along that has DVI out and supports at least 720P.
Anyone know of any?

BillyDee, interesting that you don't see this on component! I'm also using DVI out (inbuilt 720p DVI setting), although I'm pulling the RGBHV lines out of the DVI-I connector to feed a CRT projector. Mine doesn't actually blank out -- it just skips ahead a second or three. Enough to miss a word or two of dialog, and there's a jarring jump in the background music.

Hummm....I may have seen this problem as well? I was watching "The Terminal" and it seemed to skip and I thought it was just a network problem? Does it do it on movies at random or specific ones?

Now I am thinking about watching the entire movie again to see if it still does it… I can not remember the other movie I also saw it on but would like to try it again too if I can remember…..

Mark, two places I can think of offhand that do it to me:

* Star Wars II, during the intro scene where Padme's ship is coming in to Corouscant. I don't remember the exact moment but it's before the ship lands. There's a noticeable jump.

* Tomb Raider, when Lara is showing the clock to the old guy at the auction house. I don't recall the exact line he's saying, but it's just at the end of the scene in his office, just before she goes down the stairs. A word or two of his gets cut off.

This was with a VOB over the LAN, not with a DVD. (I rented the DVD and ripped it to LAN until I got a chance to watch it, then deleted it. So I don't have the DVD or the VOB to test it now.)

I have Tomb-2 but not the first one. I do have SW-II on DVD and will rip it to HD and test.

You using just one BIG vob or split up?

I use one big VOB. I ripped those a while ago before I figured out how to get DVDshrink to write large VOB files (Edit, Preferences, Output Files, uncheck "Split VOBs into 1GB files"), so I was concatenating 1GB files together. I doubt the jumps happened at 1GB boundaries, though. The SW-II example happens right after the introductory crawl, no more than 3-4mins into the movie.

If I remember right, the jump in SW-II happens soon after the ship comes into the atmosphere -- like when it switches from showing the ships from above, to seeing them come at the camera. Somewhere right in there. Check to see if there's a chapter mark there.

If you can't duplicate it, I'll have to rent it again (or buy it, what the heck, it's a helluva lot better than SW-I!) and see if I can characterize it better. Not that it'll do us any good, since Momitsu R&D doesn't seem to have any interest in it. :(

You can always use the old themes form Momitsu. Just rename the old theme from momitsu to momitsu13 and copy it into the theme folder and then two theme choices will come up when selected.

In the features list for the new 1.4 media server, what does "Support Media Service Plugin" mean? Does this mean it will support a 3rd party media server?

Yes, same problem here. It is right at 2:12 into it, like you said when the ship is going to land. The last shot shows it going into the clouds and then at 2:12 a pause and then you see the ship coming through the clouds at you. The strange think is that with the actual DVD it is a 2:39 that the exact scene happens????

It is not at a chapter stop so I am going to have to research this more. I dont think it is a V880N problem but rather a copy protection problem. I have some other goodies to rip to HD with so let me try those and get back to you.

I bought my V880N to use with my new Toshiba 52HM84, but the remotes seem to be sending the same signals, as using either causes both machines to react, the erroneous one in unpredictable ways.

I'm sorry to be such a newbie, but is there anything I can do? The Toshiba's remote is reprogrammable, if I can find the right code, but there are 1000 of them and Momitsu doesn't appear in the Toshiba manual's list of codes. There are, of course, keys such as Zoom and Repeat that don't appear on the Toshiba remote even if I do find the code.

I know that you can go in an change the pictures that are displayed when you playback music. Just rename the photos you want displayed to the same name that Momitsu used: slide1.jpg slide2.jpg etc... up to 8. I wish there was a way to get it to display more then 8 so if anyone figures that out let us know!

Not sure what you mean but you can go back in install earlier firmwares using the URL to the firmware page on Momitsu's site and then you just arrow down to the one you want to flash and it will install.

As for the stutter, it is not the latest firmware. I had that problem one time and I think it had to do with not uninstalling Java before installing the new server software and had nothing to do with the player at all. I would try that first. Uninstall MMC and JAVA and then install MMC which will install JAVA again for you and then give it a try. Also make sure you have at least a 900MHZ server and a 100MB connection and that something else is not using up lots of processor power or bandwidth on you network. Check for spyware, viruses.. you know the usual stuff....

Never heard of that happening so what you should do is get an IR repeater/router and cover up the IR window of both of the peices of gear so that the IR command only go to one or the other depending on what you have the remote set to control at that time.

Thanks. I'll try other codes on the Toshiba remote to control the TV, to see whether I can get to an IR spectrum away from the Momitsu. I mostly hadn't heard of any trouble with the Momitsu and IR crossover (since the old Pioneer problem got solved), so I wondered whether this told me I had a defective unit or something.

As for an IR repeater, I'd never even heard of that before, so I'll look into that, too. I hope I can find something to cover the IR receivers that won't make my components look too bad.

In a nut shell and IR router is a IR reciever that you place up front near you display device and that picks up the IR code and then it sends it (the IR) over wire to a router that you set up so that any Toshiba codes only go to IR output-1 which had a IR flasher that you put on top of the IR window on the Toshiba TV and then you hook up an IR flasher to IR output-2 and place that flasher on the front of the V880N over the IR pickup.

Yes you do have to cover up the window then and if black electrical tape looks to much like crud (which it of course it does if your gear is out for display and not hidden in a closet) then they do make nice covers that fit over top of the IR flasher.

Not sure on the cost as I just install and service the stuff but I am sure if you Google enough you will find some.

Check Universal Remote, Zantech, Niles, etc.. websites and you should be able to get some part numbers and names and then check Ebay.

If only one set of codes is interfering with both devices then you could just get away with a simple IR repeating system and just cover that one window... if you get my meaning....

Thanks A/Vspec for the good advice. I bought the Momitsu as it has DVI to replace a Buffalo LinkTheater. I knew that the BLT worked (with component) on my ethernet 100 mhz connection, so couldn't figure out way the Momitsu didn't perform under the otherwise same setup parameters. The MMC software is on a server with a 1.8gHz processor attached to the Momitsu with Cat6, so I didn't think either of these hardware issues caused the problem. I had already removed the Java and reloaded MMC a number of times before posting, but no go. I reloaded the firmware to the earlier version 07-87-041018-01-MMS-108-000 bin and now no stutter, or what ever its called? I noted that the blue light was very intermittant with the latest firmware, but now it pulses at even intervals. I checked it with my host monitor, and the former connection was running at about 90 ms ping response to the Momitsu, but now its at 20 ms. Now I'm a happy camper.

No problem, glad to see it is working ok now, but a little confused why the latest firmware is causing studder problems on your setup but works fine on mine.

I only have a 900MHz server and I am currently just using Cat5e with a 10/100 switch and the latest version plays back smooth as silk and I have internet music back which I had lost with earlier versions of the MMC.

From your post I take it you are direct connected to the server from the V880N using a X-over cat6 cable?

Oh and my ping is 19ms (average) from server to V880N.

This chapter 'stutter' with VOBs is driving me insane. Everything in my system is perfect other than this. Support told me they would look in to it.

Does anybody know of any software that will strip out the chapter breaks? I've tried several tools and can't find one to do it.

I am still working on the SWII chapter studder problem so if I crack that one I will let everyone know the cure....

kechambe, if you got Momitsu support to promise they'd look at it, you're doing better than me. I nagged them about it 3 times in a 3 week period and never even got a response. Let us know if they actually come up with something.

Well after several tests using different rippers, I have found a few things about SWII and this pause problem.

The first thing is: when I create one large VOB file, which is what I do with all my DVD's, not only will the V880N play it back with a pause, but also my computer will pause at the same exact place. This place is NOT a chapter stop.

The second thing is: When I create serveral small VOB files, the computer plays it back just fine but the V880N still pauses at that spot but it shows a different time display then the one large VOB.

So... I am just not sure what is causing this problem?

I am going to have someone else try some testing and see if they have the same results on the PC end.

Mark, can you tell me how you create one large VOB file from lots of little ones?

Sure Jimmy... there is a check box under edit/preferences/output files tab called "Split VOB files into 1GB size chucks (recommended)" Just uncheck this and it will just create one large VOB.

If you've already got a bunch of little ones, you can just concatenate them together. Open a DOS window, cd to the directory where the VOBs are, and (assuming all the VOBs in that directory are for one movie) run a command like "copy /b *.vob ..\WholeMovie.vob". That does a binary concatenation of all the .vob files in that directory into a new vob in the parent directory.

Mark, what player did you use when you saw the jump on your computer? I'm 100% certain I did NOT see the jumps when I played the VOBs on my computer with PowerDVD.

I used WinDVD5 I think I still have a version of PowerDVD around I could install and try. Also, as I stated I did not see the jump with VOB's with WinDVD5, only when I tryed one LARGE VOB did I see the jump with WinDVD5.

Has anyone been able to stream an MP4 with subtitles yet?

ie having an MP4, filename.mp4 with the .SRT file, filename.srt and had the mom display the subtitles?

If so, how? There seems to be no documentation on how... just simply a statement saying it can do this!!!

Well I sent the SWII disc to a buddy to do some testing also and he concluded what we all have, that it is a player issue. here is his response to the problem:

"No pause, more like a 9 frame jitter. The ship kind of jerks out of the cloud. Now the “Who Cares” department says the effect can be eliminated by pausing the vid for a second (to collect it’s thoughts) right before the problem.

Big VOB plays great on PowerDVD over wireless(11MB) link.

No doubt it is a player issue. If I had to guess I’d say that there’s something about the amount of rendering required to reproduce the cloud detail and the ship. It’s pretty obvious that that whole sequence is a special effects Money Shot. The software players all average out the common elements from frame to frame, don’t they? If that’s true maybe this set of pixels freaks it out…

BUT THEN it would happen all the time regardless of file size…

So he is also stumped as the cause but it does look to be a player problem, whether it be software DVD players or our Momitsu.

Has anyone tried this exact same test on one of the other network-able DVD players to see of they exhibit the same behavior?

I guess we are going to just have to pull out the old round disc on some of the movies we would rather have on the server.

I don't buy the "special effects money shot" theory. Doesn't matter how hard it was to render the image, it's not THAT hard an image to display. And that theory doesn't explain why Tomb Raider jumps during the scene of the old guy holding the clock and saying "This clock... is a mystery."

And if it was something about the difficulty of the scene, then it should happen if the difficult scene is played from a DVD too. Which it doesn't.

I don't get a *pause* on SWII. It's a sudden jump, as if some number of frames (maybe 9, I'd guess more) were missing. Same with Tomb Raider.

Mark, have you tried pausing the player right before the jump to see if it still happens? I'm gonna have to rent the disk again so I can rip another copy and try this myself...

I watch a lot of foreign films that I download and stream from my computer. Most of the time I use subtitle files format .SRT to understand them. Anyways, recently I updated my firmware to the latest version on the update page and the subtitles are no longer showing up. I tried going back to older firmwares but they're still not showing up on screen. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it?

This machine makes me real nervous! Just got it today..setup to work with my JVC HX2 in my Home theater..running, of course, DVI connection set to 1080I. Played couple movies...look wonderful...never better...I was sooooo excited. Then I operated the remote to open the door..removed dvd hit close button..then it froze....says "load" in the window. I unplug, restarted..over and over...I waited 1 hour..repeated...same "load" in display window...Finally it woke up and was able to turn it off. This machine makes me real nervous! Just got it today..setup to work with my JVC HX2 in my Home theater..running, of course, DVI connection set to 1080I. Played couple movies...look wonderful...never better...I was sooooo excited. Then I operated the remote to open the door..removed dvd hit close button..then it froze....says "load" in the window. I unplug, restarted..over and over...I waited 1 hour..repeated...same "load" in display window...Finally it woke up and was able to turn it off. 1. I believe yes but I'm sure someone else can confirm.
2. Yes and 1080i as well over component video but, with anything over 480p the macrovision scrambles the video content of copy protected media. To my knowledge, this have never been a user option even though when Momitsu released these they said that they would offer a menu item to turn off macrovision. It's possible that they have and I never saw it mentioned or maybe it's a hidden code but so far I never saw anything mentioned on any forums.
3. Not sure on this one. If memory serves, there is a setting for TV aspect ratio and once that is selected there is another setting of which one of the drop down items is fit to screen. I believe there was native size or something along those lines.

no, output buffer is 720x576 only.

Only server solution would be a real time recompression to that size.

Recompressed HDS files to 720x576 look great though. Off course not HD but very good!

vjren, could you elaborate a bit more on the output buffer? I am running my V880N at 1280x720P with a 72Hz refresh rate using the DVI (VGA) output.

Are you saying that the V880N server software is streaming the video across to the V880N at 720x576 and that is all the V880N will except as an input to it?

Anyone have problems with this disc played back from the server? It plays fine from the disc in the drive of the V880N but it is choppier then shredded lettuce and frogs in the blender combined when played back from the server. :p

The momitsu only has that size of output buffer, next it has a scaler, (multiply and divide) to scale to your output resolution.

So no hd playback, but good DVD playback and scaling to your display.

Thanks for that info vjren. You don't suppose that the output buffer is causing problems with such disc's as "Hostage" (which plays very choppy on my V880N which has the latest firmware) and also the SW2 problem that is being seen here?

Ok.. so from what I read, the Momitsu DVD-V880-DX can up'convert through component, right?

Also what is the chipset on this unit? Is it DCDI?
-Minus the buggies maybe I will lean to this unit since the oppo gives me nothing to offer using component hookups. :(

Choppy? SW2? Elaborate please?

If it is choppy it might be a loader problem, but then it has to be for more than 20% of your dvd's.

No DCDi, 880DX can upconvert , and also CSS discs. On DVI the oppo has the edge, but on component the V880DX holds its own.

With SW2 and Hostage I mean playback from the file server. From the disc drive they both play fine but from the server over the network SW2 has a few studder problems at the begining of the movie when the ship is coming down through the clouds.

Hostage is choppy right after the begining credits end and the movie begins, also Saw, which is DTS ES Discrete starts having playback problems at the end of the movie.

Perhaps it is a problem with the latest firmware?

No, .ts files are not supported even though they are MPEG2. The player cannot take or pass-through any high-def signals either and has a max input of standard resolutions only.

Has anybody had trouble with the v880N freezing up? I'm not talking about the brief "jump" you see on some movies (e.g. SWepII, as discussed before), nor is this a stutter caused by insufficient LAN bandwidth. This is a total freeze-up that can last anywhere from 1-2 sec to as much as 10-15 seconds!! It's happening at least once on almost every movie I watch, but it is NOT repeatable. It only started happening in the last few months, and I have not changed the player firmware or anything like that. Help??

No, not originals -- VOBs over 100mbit LAN. Unless the server freezes up for 10-15sec (not likely), it seems like it must be the v880N. Except the server has had some changes lately (but not when I noticed the freezes starting) and the v880N hasn't, but...

Suppose I could. I had it installed several months ago, but the "recent changes" in the server involved a fried hard drive and a from-scratch reinstall on a new disk. So I'll have to dig it up and try installing it again.

I have started noticing something really strange lately. When playing DVDs every once in a while I see a transparent white rectangle appear across the screen. It appears for 1-2 seconds quite randomly (once or twice for the duration of the movie). Has anybody seen anything similar?

Has anybody noticed a brighter-than-black border around their picture area? The border has wide-ish bars on the sides, and thin lines on top & bottom.

This may be a CRT/raster issue, but I don't *think* so. I've set my CRT's raster/G2/etc to produce nice black blacks, and that works fine. But around the picture area there is a border that is significantly brighter, maybe IRE10-15 or so. I'm wondering if maybe the v880N could be producing it?

It does NOT fill the full raster area, which makes me think it can't be a CRT adjustment problem; furthermore, if I hook up a PC input at 800x600, I don't see anything like this.

So I think it must be the v880N. It's not affected by the v880N's BRIGHTNESS or CONTRAST settings. If I lower CONTRAST with a full-black picture, then the picture's "black" level becomes bright enough to match the border at about CONTRAST = 43. But the border itself doesn't change at all.

Does anybody else see this, and do you have any ideas how I can get rid of it?

Nobody, huh? I think it must be the v880N's front/back porches. I was just experimenting with using the v880N's component outputs instead of RGBHV drawn off the DVI-I jack. The front porch was larger, so the picture was farther to the right than it is with RGBHV input. I assume this is because the v880N's 702p component signal has a different porch setting than the 720p DVI signal.

But why is the porch brighter than black?

Not a chance... syabas makes the firmware. Momitsu has to pay for it.. Bet they are not gona, haven't seen another syabas player having this..

V880Dx is very nice in this regard, I consider it one of the advanced players in this regard.

That's too bad as I would love to see that implemented.

I've got a bunch of AVI video files with MP3 audio. The audio and video is perfect quality, but it is not completely sunchronized. I can tell its is not the fault of the 880N, because it behaves the same on my iMac.

Does anybody know if it is possible to manualy correct "lip sync" during playback on the 880N, as is possible in XBMC on the xBox?

I need some major help please. I have bought an HP MD 6580N DLP TV. I also have a Momitsu 880N DVD player. Right now I have bought a DVI to VGA adapter and pluged the VGA cable from the adapter in to my TV's VGA input. I have set the Video settings to DVi 720p @60Mhz. This gives me a resolution of 1280 x720 @60
hz. tha is what is being showen on the info screen on the TV. What I need help with is there is a higher resolution that can be set. On another thread they said this TV can do 1280 x 1024 @60 Mhz. Well I have tried the 1280 x 1024 which is an already made selection in the video settings. But when I do that my whole screen goes scrambeled. so I need to know what are the property settings I can make inthe Custom DVi configuration so I can achieve this high resolution. Can someone please hlp me. i just need to know from top to bottom what do I need to set for each of the settings in the Custom DVI connection settings.

From the AVS search. I found an old thread that had some ones configuration of the Custom DVI. I placed that in to my Momitsu. And the picture did get sharper but also the TV reads the resolution as 1360 x 768 @ 60Mhz

I'm playing PAL DVD's on my momitu (880DX) outputting to NTSC plasma (upconverting to 720p/1080i) I notice that the picture "jerks" (especially noticable when credits scroll along the screen). I have read that this is attributed to "4:2:3 pull-down" effect (or basically mapping 50Hz to 60Hz) but is there any way around this? No doubt changing the momitsu to putput PAL and changing my plasma to allow PAL input would work, but doing this on a per DVD basis seems non-optimal.

Any way around this?

A 'very' off-the-wall question for the Momitsu-gurus here...
Since most player-loader's have standardized outputs (and output for processing at a common-480i), would it not be 'possible' to use a jukebox (like a Sony 400-disk-875/995) as a 'front-end' server, it's loader cabled into a Mobitsu (or similar) for the superior-processing there? Or would such a mod be 'cumbersome' re: this 'foreign-signal' to be read/processed by the circuitry/DAC's in the 880? [I'm 'notioning' using the 880 as a cheap/stand-alone scaler, if you will, for one-or-more juke's to act as 'file-servers' for...]
IDE-cables come with multi-connectors...seems like the most one would need to make the above 'work' would be proximity (for sure under 3'), and maybe both physically-playing a dvd...to 'fool' the Momitsu regards the 480i input-origin?

Just got myself a One For All URC 9910 universal remote for Christmas. One reason I picked this one was because it was supposed to have learning capabilities, so I figured it could handle an "off-brand" like the Momo. But it turns out it only has 4 learning buttons per mode. So much for that idea.

Does anybody have codes that work for the v880N? remotecentral.com has codes for Prontos and MX700/etc, but none for the 9910.

Well, browsing over at hifi-remotes.com, shows they have codes for the URC line....though not one specific for the 9910 (though apparently they have one for the V880)....

I never did figure out JP1 stuff, but perhaps now that I have time on my hands...I should try. I have a URC-8910 laying about somewhere and the other bits and pieces. Maybe I'll find that I like using the a more substantial remote to work my V880N....

I called OFA. They have downloadable codes for the v880 but not the v880N. And, since the v880 conflicted with Pioneer codes and Momitsu remapped the codes for the v880N, the v880 download doesn't work for the v880N. *sigh*

It appears it's possible to learn more than 4 keys (L1-L4) in each mode -- you can in fact learn a code to overwrite any key. If your keys are all dead (since you don't have a v880N config), you can learn the whole v880N remote. But the 9910 is limited to a total of 25 learned keys in the whole remote, and I want about 30 keys off my v880N remote. :(

Using the 9910 or 8810 would be SOOO much nicer than the Momitsu remote. As you say it's more substantial, it has a backlight, the keys are laid out much more logically, and it has a LOT more power than the anemic Momitsu remote. But time on my hands is something I do NOT have. If you figure out the JP1 stuff, please let me know!!

The Great Indoors near Flatirons mall in Broomfield had MX500 for $50 (IIRC). That was in the Christmas/New Years time frame. That's the best price I've ever seen for them. They don't have all the power of an MX700 but close. PM if you want more details about the differences. I will not be subscribing to this thread. I just check it out when it pops to the top of this forum. ;)

Wow, that *is* an amazing price. But I already got the 9910 for Christmas from the in-laws. They probably bought it from a store in Phoenix which makes it tough to return. My wife would probably not be amused if I pitched it and bought a different one. :) So I need to at least try to make this one work. I'd be in good shape if it would take 30-35 learned codes instead of just 25. I'll have to decide what buttons I can live without, until OFA gets a full setup code for the v880N. Once they do that, this remote will work fine.

If you get into JP1'ing, there is already an upgrade for the momitsu V880. with the OEM remote, you can easily build an upgrade for the V880N. It's pretty easy to run out of eprom space using learned signals. The experts an hifi-remote.com, in the forum, can probably help if you need help getting started.

[quick edit] I looked and there are 2 V880N upgrades based on the latest JP1 tool, RemoteMaster. No learning required to use these. all you need is a pc and a jp1 cable.

My story is about 1year ago, I wanted a universal remote. I was pretty set on the MX-500 (which by the way is discontinued, hence the blow-out pricing) and a OFA 8810 for learning and teaching signals to the MX-500. Long story short, I bought the 8810 and a JP1 cable, and never go the MX-500. I can control all my gear, have pretty complicated macros, and have it all working just the way I want and with computer programmability.

I don't think the MX-500 is discontinued. HTM (Home Theater Master) just keeps making the old stuff. It just get harder to find. I remember this question coming up at remotecentral.com. This was the answer from one of their dealers. Plus it's still on their website - http://www.universalremote.com/products/

I stand corrected. I think I was thinking about that gizmo that allowed you to program the mx-500 with ir, irclone was the name, I think.

by the way that's a real blow-out price!
