The 880N is supposed to be released in January and it apparently supports network connections via an ethernet cable. Can anyone discuss the usefullness of these abilities. If I have a computer in a different room and connect it to the Momitsu via a network cable or via a wireless network, what can I do with it? Show pictures, play music ok....what about video? how much data can flow here and how quickly? I'm assuming games would be too demanding to transfer.

Can anyone discuss the usefullness of these abilities.

Looks like it plays VOBs over the network.

Very nice...

What this means is that you can keep part of your DVD
collection on a fileserver somewhere in the house and
access it from different parts of the house if you have an
ehternet network.

An immediate task I can put it to is to serve the multi-disk
movies like Lord Of The Rings and some of my flippers
like Amadeus and most my concert disks.

The task is being done by the HTPC at the moment and
I would like to collapse it into one unit and reduce
the clutter.

(It it works as advertised it will probably give my HTPC a
good run for its money and move it a step closer to retirement)

Hey guys,

I emailed them a couple of weeks ago about a specific release date. They replied back saying there was no specific date except that they were expecting it to be late January. Hopefully it doesn't get pushed back from there.

I have only seen the KiSS players that can do something similar
but they seem to have its fair share of problems.

The Momitsu is relatively stable and the V880 at least has
reasonable good feed back on this forum.

Does anyone know of other network capable DVD players out there ?

toxic candy

and it is supposed to do MPEG4
If the whole thing works good, it's gonna be one of the best solutions to replace HTPC with no fuss.... one crapy PC with big hard drives far away (for the noise... ) one 880N and voila..... can't wait to read some reviews of it :)

Does anyone know if the V880N will still have the ability to output a analog signal thru the DVI like the current V880?

Uther

I also saw in another thread that it will accept video signals from other sources and output via DVI, but this was listed as "optional". I would be curious to hear further information on this as that would be an excellent feature.

They change from Jan to Feb and now to March 2004 ! I think they want to sell more V880 before selling the V880N !! I am not going to buy V880 until it drops to $150. By Feb, the D2 will be out.

These HDTV stuff are not new technology. they just transfer the old PC vedio to the DVD player. I have 1280x1024 (or higher) on my PC monitor few years ago.

With HDMI going to replace DVI soon, all these DVI players are short lived. My next projector, TV and receiver will have a HDMI connection.

How come they do not sell these player at USA ??? I am sure they can sell many of them here easily.

ewclam9,
Lots of us have used a HTPC for years as well. The V-880, D1 and others like it are for those of us who want an alternative to having to use a PC. Not necessarily better, just different and IMHO simpler.

Yes there was another player introduced about 4 months ago that does do this.... and with some success. The downside was, despite the fact that it was a DVD player, playing DVDs is what it did not do well at all.
Go figure.

no point getting it then, can 880N stream VOB over the network?

Juno
01-23-04, 09:46 AM
That's a good question. The network DVD player that was reviewed was the Amoi NDP9200. The operation seemed to be very similar to a Momistu. It required that you install a program on your PC, connect your player, the software would catalog your files, then the player could find them via the network. For this particular player there was no mention of VOB files. But you could contact Manowa tech assist at Manowa.com for specification information. I'm very interested as well in this feature.

I have been looking all over for a new dvd player and when I stumbled upon this Momitsu 880N, I though all my wishes had been answered.

However it seems like none of the urls to the manowa web site are working.

Is this right? Does anyone know what happened?

BTW- I bought the Samsung HD391 last Friday and promptly returned it on Sunday. I saw no difference on the DVI output when compared to a $70 dvd player using component out. Infact, the DVI output was worse, I had to make adjustments to my plasma to get get the image to fit correctly.

Can anyone tell me how the Momitsu players perform? Is the picture quality noticably better?

(my plasma is the Viewsonic 450HD)

The IO Data player looks pretty good to me. Feature-wise, it's almost identical to the Momitsu V880N player except that it doesn't have the region-free capability (a major point for me). It even outputs 720p and 1080i from the component outputs.

The 880N looks like it could really be the answer to what I am looking for. I have lurking about any DVI upscaling DVD players since last August and starting to get impatient (waiting on the Sammy 941 [hope no black or white crush], vs. Bravo D3) but the V880 and now the V880N seems to be a good option. Unfortunately I can not use the V880 thanks to their IR codes being similar to Pioneer's IR codes. My question is:

Does anyone know if the new V880N will have a good set of IR codes that will not conflict with out MAJOR name brand IR codes? It seems ridiculous to me that I even had to ask this on a $400 device. For me Manowa really dropped the ball on this one.

Hi BajaFishin

I wish I could answer your questions. I hope and expect that it has the
same features as the new V880 firmware. It is going to use the Sigma
chip. I wish that it would also support WMV9.
I still have a few other questions that you did not ask:

1. How can it be made region free?
2. Can Macrovision be turned off?
3. Can it upscale via DVI and component to 720p & 1080I
4. Can you do your own settings via a special menu?

I think (I'm guessing) but not sure, so don't take my words for it -

The only different between V880 and V880N is that V880N is network capable, that's it, other than that, it's the same identical unit.

Played with MMC a bit while I wait (im)patiently for the v880n's to be released.

Started up mmc on my lame PC. MMC1.jpg shows 4 possible screens.

Pointed my browser to my PC IP address, port 8000 (port configurable).
MMC2.jpg in upper left shows v880n home page. Selected movies; MMC2.jpg shows results. Bottom of image shows web server response to Play selection in browser

My system thrashed for quite a while as it searched for and indexed the various media files.

MMC appears to be written in java and is running apache tomcat 4.1.30. Mangled the url to force a 404 error to get it to cough up its web/app server type.

My bet is on an open source version of the mmc app or at least an official Linux release. I know mmc is written n java after doing some tests with. Depending what library's, if any, that they used, a simple jar rebuild may do the trick. Regardless, I have little doubt that a minor effort could yield an equivilent capability based on apache tomcat and some reverse engineering of the get/post v880n to mmc server.

Once again, if anyone desires the mmc-v11.exe (26Mb) please suggest a location for me to post it.

Momitsu is silent on whether or not they will publish a Mac or Linux variant of MMC. If the do publish these variants I would expect that event to be some time after their initial W$ launch May 24.

What has been exposed recently is the possibility that networked A/V appliances such as the V880N are implementing proprietary html get/posts structures. For example, my browser normally interprets the html post stream from a web server. When I query the MMC server, my browser just displays the raw html post from the server because it doesn't know what to do with it, as expected. Now, I am very interested in knowing whether there is an html/xml standard by which well behaved networked A/V appliances communicate with a web server. If there is a standard AND if Momitsu complied with it then there is a strong possibility the MMC server can be replaced with any A/V appliance web server without custom code. Otherwise, I'll but my bet on the Linux community coming through with an open source solution that will also compile/run on a Mac, should Momitsu drop this ball.

Also, I have downloaded the manual, and it shows USB connection on the back of it. Can this be hooked up to a USB hard drive, to store and watch movies in the VOB format?

This is really two questions: Regarding the usb port, I'm disapointed that is 1.1 vs 2.0. That said, usb storage devices are supposed to be treated as just another source of media, browsable and playable. No idea though what file systems will be supported.

Second part of your second question: Since MMC recognized vobs when I tested it, this leads me to believe vobs will be playable independent of where they are stored. But I have some reservations about how they will handle a ripped DVD: will the MMC/V880N deal with all the ripped vob and other files such that the user experience is that of a movie coming from a DVD in the loader?

Or will one have to add all the vobs into a play list in the correct order and then ???

I'm hoping this formula is true: V880N's usb media + vobs play = one sweet capability.

If this Momitsu is like the V880 (without N) it is based on a Sigma Designs processor and prototype --- there are several open source projects that work with all of the current Sigma based network players to various extents including the Kiss 500 series which has the same processor expected in the Momitsu V880N so I imagine you will be able to host the server stuff on any platform that can run apache.

the only concern i see w/ the networking capabilities is that the wireless option is only 802.11b ... you won't be able to stream dvds w/ a wireless connection using 802.11b (w/ the new 802.11g, you'd have no problems)... if you go wired... you won't have any problems in that department either

Beaker1024

Go wired! Should almost be a must for the HT crowd.

I second what whiskaz said... plus another consideration.

Let's see here.... start streaming wirelessly from Local PC server to V880N player in nice HT room. Get up and make popcorn in a microwave unfotunately located between WiFi tranmistter/receiver and V880N. Friends and family in HT room start yelling about the movie/show braking up into a nice digitized image and stuttering sound. :) Umm Wireless + interference....

I'm going good old CAT-5e.

Now if they'd only shipping these puppies and let a first round of AVS members buying it to put out good reviews.

Unfortunate to make this announcement that the 5/24 release for V880N is being delayed. We did not want to accept pre-order or prepayment as we anticipated the difficulties of launching a new product on time.

I think a firmware update would allow the super-G cards to be used.. I mean it's got a pcmcia slot so why not? 108mbps card so approx~ 50mbps throughput would be enough to stream dvds or mpeg off the the pc.

Can someone tell me if a receiver is required for dts. It says dts out in the specs so does it decode dts for you?

The V880N is quite likely still built on top of uClinux. This means that the cards that are most likely to work are those which already work under Linux. 802.11g drivers for Linux are just starting to come out, so it might be a while before embedded vendors integrate any support.

I think if this feature was incorporated quickly, this dvd player would be "the best dvd player" winner considering the price.

Not necessarily. If it's still built on the Sigma Design EM8500 one-chip digital media processor (and I don't have any reason to suspect that it won't be), the deinterlacer won't be great. I've not seen the output of a EM8500-based player - I'm just going on information from the DVD shootout.

I still want to get my hands on this player, but it's the networked media features that I find interesting, not the overall PQ. I think that it's possible that the Samsung DVD-HD941 could fix the black level and MPEG artifacts that are in the HD931 to be a better overall DVD player for a cheaper price.

Now, if we could get this thing to play WM9 HD files ... (me dreaming)

Beaker1024

It would be nice if someone offered a DVD player that had all the features: WM9 HD discs, Networked, DivX playback, All formats of burned DVD and CDs, both Hi-Rez audio, DVI and HDMI connectors (or guarantee of no HDMI to DVI issues, this scares me on the Sammy 941), discrete IR codes, upscale custom resolutions, region and macro-vision options, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some of them.

Unfortunately this fictitious player would not be in the $300-$500 price range so it's either Hi-Res audio (Sammy 941) OR WM9 (Bravo D3) OR Networked (Momitsu V880N). Those are what I consider the BIG features and the ones that seem to be unfortunately mutually exclusive.

Here is some information. I asked Cypress to cancel the pre-order and apply funds to a new V880. They've gone silent and haven't responded.

I was hoping to provoke a response that either they would have it by X date or yeah, delay justifies refund.

Hmm, this doesn't smell good. While they were taking preorders they were returning emails very quickly. Now, my emails have also gone unanswered.

If they are taking the money and running we may have a problem. I don't believe that credit card companies will do chargebacks against paypal.

Has anybody heard anything from Cypress? They are listed on Momitsu's site as an authorized dealer and I searched the formum and there seemed to be many possitive experiences ordering 880's from them.

I hope that I am just being paranoid.

The way I understand it, the 880N (as opposed to the 880 now available) can play files served up by a PC server app (and PC version of iTunes for music.) This will allow you to play ripped DVD files, view photos, play MP3s, etc... that are stored on a PC on your LAN. I am currently doing this with an HTPC, hi-def card, and front end software, and it works pretty well, but it is not the most WAF friendly or 100% reliable at this time. A STB version would be sweet, especially with the HD scaling as well.

At this time, the only ways I know of to play ripped DVDs, photos, and music from a PC hard drive over LAN, AND play discs on the machine locally are:HTPC, hacked XBox, and myth-TV linux box. The HTPC can give you everything (HD scaling via good video card, playback of everything file wise, etc..) but is complex to set up, remote control and keep running. The Xbox looks promising if you can hack to have someone hack it, but I do not think the video quality will match these other options or scale to HD resolution. The myth solution UI looks very cool but you need to know linux to get it running, and I am not sure how well IR remote control works either.

Ideally we could have a box just like the Momistu (even better if it had DVDA/SACD) and it would play these network files without running a server app on a PC. Even if I get ahold of an 880N, I still need to have a PC up and running all the time with their software to enable network playback. If it would play the files from a NAS and not have to run server software on a PC, it would be ideal. Anyone know of any solutions on the horizon like that?

"play these network files without running a server app on a PC"

You could do that using an external hdd via the usb connection on the Momitsu. It's not a NAS device technically but close enough for what you want.

Interesting. But isn't the USB going to be 1.1, not 2.0? If that is the case, how would it have the speed to play VOB files from a ripped DVD? I understand for pics for MP3, but I can't see how movies could be done unless it is 2.0 (I hope I'm wrong and it is.) I wonder if a USB hub w/ multiple HDs would work? I have a four drive cage that holds four 250GB drives. It connects via one firewire or two USB 2.0 cables to the PC now. If the Momitsu could see both bridgeboard cards in the cage (and all four drives therfore), I could lose a server on my network.

Does anyone know if the Momitsu will support DVD menus (IFO files) from the network or USB connections? I like to rip exact copies w/ all menus, not just VOBs. This is the only downside to an Xbox w/ XMC now...it cannot support DVD menus from files.

It's listed as a USB 1.1 port which would allow for a theoretical 12mbps. Hopefully this should be able to stream a 90 min file that's about 1GB in size. I have a feeling that this size may not stream smoothly. Full dvd rips are out.. but compressed divx files should work... maybe files limited to around 700mb... and also I don't see .ifo files as a supported format.

This is what's on the site: supported extentions via ethernet.
• Video-on-demand supporting

- MPEG 4 (OpenDivX, XviD, RMP4) (.m4v, .avi, .divx, .xvid, .rmp4, .mov, .mp4)
- AVI audio codec : MP3, AC3, PCM, WMA, Ogg
- MOV : 3ivX + MP3, 3ivX + PCM, 3ivX + AAC (3ivX converted from supported MPEG 4 video codec using Dr. DivX II for MAC OS)

Thus one may not have the convenience of menu driven dvd playback over the net using the v880n. I've been playing around with the MMC application that DrCee provided me. I've come across some very interesting things.

First, the software is developed by a company named Syabas (http://syabas.com/). The client side (what runs on the V880N) is called myiBox. The server is myiHome. It looks like these devices also use Syabas' software:

TRANSGEAR DVX-500
http://www.transtechnology.co.jp/products/hard/det/dvx-500.html

AVeL LinkPlayer
http://www.iodata.jp/prod/multimedia/video/2003/avlp1dvd/index.htm

MediaWiz

http://www.vertexlink.co.jp/product/vertexlink/mediawizplus

EyeHome
http://www.elgato.com/index.php?file=products_eyehome

Probably the most interesting device:

Neuston Virtuoso MC-500
http://neuston.com/en/mc500.asp

(note that the Neustron MC-500 and the MediaWiz look identical)

The MC-500 already has Media Center downloads for OSX and Linux! This is a good sign that Syabas provides software to its licensees for non-Windows platforms, so Momitsu should be able to provide it without much work. In the worst case, you should be able to use pretty much any vendor's server, as long as there isn't too much customization going on.

I downloaded the Linux server from Neuston and fired it up. It required a JRE and a bit of manual configuration, and it was a bit buggy. But that might not matter in the long run.

There are several Japanese projects that are building media servers for these devices. It looks trivial to do, since there is a built in web browser that actually implements what's shown on the device. So far I've found:

http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Cupertino/2647/
http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-SanJose/3271/
http://www3u.kagoya.net/~kkuroda/pc_mw.htm

Also of note - there is a web site designed to be a portal page for the myiBox based devices. You can browse it here: http://myboleh.com/myihome/index.jsp

So - on the question of support for .IFO files -- I've not seen anything that indicates that it's supported. I've been unable to find anything but Kaleidescape (http://www.kaleidescape.com/) that is really geared toward full DVD on demand (including menus). And that's waaay out of my price range.

Here are some screenshots of the media center running on Linux. First, the main menu (as would be seen on the device:)

WOW.. great Info mswilson. I did research on this unit back when I found it online, and compared it to the 880N. I now dont see many differences? I know the Neustron doesnt have a DVD player in it, but what else is it missing. This has a USB and ethernet connections, so will this play entire "ripped" movies from a USB device or the ethernet connection? I dont see that it says it plays VOBs?

mswilson... What are your plans. Are you hoping to buy the 880N, and then use another media center for it to run on a mac or linux?

Well, I was pretty excited about the V880N when I first saw it. But I don't want to sacrifice DVD playback quality for the novelty of a built-in networked media player. Since there are plenty of devices built on the Sigma Designs boards and Syabas software, I'm thinking I might want to look at a higher quality player for my DVD playback and get a standalone networked media client later. A solution that would let me stream the entire contents of DVDs (including menus) is really what I'm after.

The DVD benchmark on the Bravo D1 (here (http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=all&type=DVD+Player&manufacturer=43&maxprice=0&deInt=0&mpeg=0)) has me concerned about depending on the deinterlacer that's built in the Sigma Designs based devices. I'm trying to decide if I want to go for a standalone video processor driven by a high quality signal or wait for some new players with quality deinterlacers like the Samsung HD-941 or the Panasonic DVD-S97S to get released and reviewed.

Has anyone heard from Momitsu, and know a definate date of when this 880N will hit the stores?

That benchmark was good info, has the Mom 880 ever been benchmarked like that?

Finally, have we all come to the conclusion that through USB 1.1, or even the network connection, are we not able to stream VOBs flawlessly.. in full resolution?

I guess we really wont know for sure until this damn player comes out...

It has been announced that it is delayed.

The chances of getting an email to announce availability from Momitsu is low. It is better to keep checking this thread or check in with the US distributors for Momitsu.

This evening I spoke to my account rep at Momitsu and can pass the following information on for your interest.

The V880N is currently in Mass Production and will ship on or before the 28th June.

The software is still undergoing very minor menu changes, however the functionality is complete and the firmware has stabilised. The delays to date have been due to Momitsu wanting to ensure that the firmware is as close to perfect as possible.

The V880N will be able to update it's own firmware via the internet - no need to burn a CD.

The Video In module option will not be available on the V880N. The hardware to support this function will be different and this feature will exist in a future model. (This is new news)

There have been numerous delays to the delivery schedule for the V880N, but this is the first time that Momitsu have commited the player to Mass Production. The fact that they are now taking orders and payment from distributors for the V880N is another positive sign that the product will become a reality in a couple of weeks.

But probably the Momitsu is still in competition for a place in my rack, If I can connect a Dreambox (that's a Digital-Sat-Receiver) as a streaming Server.....

The Dreambox has an Ethernet Port and the Linux software makes it possible.....

If this will run, I don't need a Video-In.

To me the V880N still has enough features to warrant the cost. Considering it will be a full video / audio streaming media center which are almost the cost (or half the cost depending on features) of the V880N plus you get the DVI upscaling DVD player.

Which the cheapest one goes for roughly half the cost of the V880N. So for me the price point is still decent even without the possibility of the Video Input module. Here's to hoping for fast, complete and favorable reviews on it ASAP.

BTW if you have a Pio Elite reciever and get this player post that the IR conflict is either still there OR gone from the V880N.

This really is a significant item for many people. In case this statement was due to a misunderstanding during our conversation I have asked Momitsu to clarify the availability and suitable hardware for the Video Input Module.

The User Manual shows the rear panel of the V880N and there is no space shown for the Video Input Module.

Will advise when I hear back.

And from what I can tell from this thread, this unit will not play DVDs ripped to a hard drive (providing an experience that mirrors what happens when you insert a DVD - DVD menus, etc.), correct? That's what I'm in search of - play my DVDs from my HD upscaled to 720p/1080i. At this point should I hold out hope this unit will be able to do this?

The video input module will allow you to connect an S-Video device and scale it to 720p or 1080i. So for example, you can connect an LV player to the video input and scale it to 720p to improve the picture.

Maybe you should have said it's the best commercial receiver. THE best
DVB Receiver is "VDR" and much more universal und fully configurable.
Its a Linux project and its freeware :D :D

Yes you're right, there is no definition of "best".

In my point of view a Dreambox is a Linux Project and Freeware ;) only with a much cheaper Hardware than a VDR-Box :p

We're here in the DVD-Forum.... why? because people won't hassle around with a HTPC (or a VDR-Box) the want something nearly "Plug&Play" (with a once flashed Dreambox you can run a new Firmware on a USB-Memory-Stick) that's Plug&Play :D :D

Hi,
I was referred to this thread, I have read it all , ( I think ) , but would be grateful of any help with my questions. Thankyou . Please read below,

Hi ,
Has anyone heard if the new 880N, which is soon to arrive has any improvements , " component wise " in comparison to the V880?.
Has Momitsu taken on board or ever commented about the improvements , or mods performed by buyers of this product?.
For example mods to the video cable , power supply, or the dvd loader etc.
I was going to buy a Momitsu V880 , but have reluctantly held off for the arrival of the V880N. Now that I hear that it has no input module, will the V880N be a better choice any way?.
I would be very interested to here anyones thoughts on this topic?.
Thankyou,

Juz,

Both the Momitsu V880 and soon V880N are availabile in Australia in modified versions, with a full 12 month Australian Warranty.

The Power Supply is modiied for lower noise and either the Component or RGBHV outputs are brought to true 75 ohm BNC sockets on the rear panel, with the internal video switch bypassed.

The latest DVD loaders are extremely reliable and do not need changing.

I have the V880N on backorder and expect delivery in the first week of July. Until then nobody is certain of the performance upgrades that have been incorporated in the design.

I'm still waiting to hear from Momitsu on the Video input Module, but expect to have an answer today. Stay tuned.

I called Momitsu and spoke to my account rep again to clarify some of the points about the V880N and the Video Input Module. In the process I now have a contact with one of the Engineers and have some solid answers.

The V880N is on track for shipping by the 28th June. Initial production priority will be given to backorders.

The Video Input Module WILL fit into the V880N, my previous comments were a misunderstanding about models and options. The hardware design is complete and they are currently working on the software. The module is expected to be available in August.

There is currently space inside the V880N to fit the Video Input Module - it fits internally and the connectors come through pre-punched holes in the back panel. These holes are covered of course.

Also, IMO since this is the 2nd gen DVI player, I hope they fixed the loader, they better, because there's no excuse if they didn't, plus, this thing is going to cost $400 plus shipping. And (I think) if anyone should buy a $400 DVD player, they shouldn't have to open up the case (even though it's fun to do the mods). - that just me.

The KiSS 508 looks to be for sale now here (http://www.mtsbs.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=11). I emailed KiSS about the 600, since the 508 does not do WM9 (or HD?.) I know this is an 880N thread, but the addition of WM9 on a (hopefully short-term) future product raised my eyebrows. Could be an interesting year. I hope they offer the KiSS without the hard drive. W/ a 1TB server, hard drives I got!

I couldn't have put it better myself! I think Baja has captured the essence of our (atleast mine) anticipation and hopes for the V880N.

Why is it after waiting 10 months to find a DVI upscaler (using old '98 Sony 480i still) doesn't seem to make waiting another 11-15 days for the first reviews of the V880N any easier?? I just hope that with good reviews that I go to purchase one and they are not already backordered. I'd hate another month or two wait on top of things!

Here is a response I got from KiSS (sent about 2 hours after I emailed them the question.) Note I had also asked if they planned to support iTunes or other media from a Mac as well as the PC.

Hi Mike,

First of all, thank you very much for your mail.

We are still in the process of developing the DP-600, and currently we
are expecting that it will be launched at some point during Q3.

It will have a DVI Output, and it will be able to scale to
HD-resolutions as well as standard resolutions.

At this point of time, I do not have an answer to your question
regarding media playback from a Mac OS, as this is not something we have
today, but certainly something we have considered.

Best regards,

A previous email has said that this video input module will be good for the both the 880 and the 880N. This will make the 880 owners happy Im sure.

I think this Information is wrong :( :( :( :( :(

For any kind of a Video-Input the machine has to have a Sigma-Designs
EM8550/EM8551 or the newest EM8620L Chip.

The 880(less N!) has a EM8500 Chip.

So there is no chance that there will be a Video Input ever! (besides you fit the new Mainboard of a 880N)

It should take about 5 minutes to install it.
My question to you all, for $120, will this be worth it?

Well I hope it isnt't hard to install like no soldering or anything, I am all thumbs, that is a bit expencive but if it does everthing I expect it to, it will be well worth it IMO

You can get a DVD-Player like the 880 for the money, you can't get a highclass Deinterlacer/Scaler for that money.........

If you want to connect an other Video-source (besides the DVD-Player) to your Projector it's definitly worth the money!

Well I hope it isnt't hard to install like no soldering or anything,

I bet it isn't.

I guess it's open the hood, pull out (break out) the opening for the module, put in the module, and connect one ribbon cable with a connector.

Refit the hood, BINGO

Well IMO, this is a letdown from the company as well. First for $400 they said the module would be there..now they want more the module. Cost of ownership goes to $520. That ain't cheap anymore..is it? Lets see the build quality of the first few players. I shall make my decision then.

Compare to what?

A standart V880? Not really
a DVDO iScan HD ? app. 3 times less expensive
a HTPC ? half the Price and Housewife proof!
We're talking about a way to get our DVDs and other Video-sources like NON-HDTV Satreceivers to a resolution of 1080i.

1080i is my favourite because i own a Sony 1272;)

If somebody needs DVI/HDMI or 1080p fine, I don't.
If somebody needs a gold plated remotecontrol, or Silver-Powercords or other High-End Stuff with the Hollywood-crippling like Regional-Code, or 480p maximum resolution....... I don't

Yeah my TV suports 1080i also so having 3 inputs in 1080i (I currently have zero) will be fantastic, even tho it is more expencive overall I am still happy with the price

Does anyone know if the input module will work with the component or VGA (from DVI-I adapter) outputs? I will not be running a DVI cable to the projector, but like that this model can upscale to HD on the analog VGA or component out. I assume custom resolutions are also supported on the analog HD outs? Also, has anyone compared the analog scaling of the 880 to any other upscaling DVD players? How about the 480p component out? Does the quality match some of the more mainstream progressive or scaling DVD players? I may end up using 480p, 720p, or a custom XGA res on my NEC HT1100 projector. The reason to even consider 480p is that the NEC "Sweetvision II" circuit, which a lot of people seem to love, is only available on inputs up to 480p. The nice thing about a player as flexible as the 880 (or 880N) is that I can experiment.

I think so!

That's why i'm waiting for that Player!

They are on the V880, so it's prettty shure that the V880N also support this!

I would use 1080i with a DVI (Full-Digital) connection, If I had a HT1100.

No comment, I can't see a reason why a digital-analog-digital conversion makes a better picture than a pure digital connection.......
But things happend;)

If you want something to play with, marry or build a HTPC.

Only issue is that I would have to use a 12 meter DVI cable, and I think that is pushing it. I know there are those out there that have this working, and I may try it, but at that length I think the benefits may be negligible. For instance, I have an HD Tivo, and many people in the TiVo community say the component out looks better than the DVI. This could be due to the HDMI to DVI conversion though, or the fact that the TiVo is video standard DVI and not computer standard 0-255. Another problem w/ DVI in my case is sending the signal to multiple displays. Doesn't activating the DVI disable the analog outs on the 880? I hope using component out does not do the same. I need to send a video or s-video out to the other TV I use for my kid. How about RGB via a DVI adapter? Is that technically activating "DVI" out, or is it a separate menu setting? What I would really like is to be able to use RGB (Via DVI-I/VGA adapter), component, and s-video all at the same time. At the very least component OR RGB plus Y/C. I know, I know, use the search feature of this board..... I will do that as well- don't mean to be lazy. I am just time pressed right now. I will check more into it later. Thanks

Does anybody know if the V880 does and the V880N will support Dual Link DVI?

An other Player like the Momi (the Yamakawa 365) has some problem with cable length like that, probably it's a problem because nobody ever thought about a DVI connection of that length.... But there is a solution for this problem....

Use a shorter cable for the DVI/HDMI connection and use a long cable for the Digital-Sound.

This could be due to the HDMI to DVI conversion though
Sorry there is no conversion HDMI and DVI is absolute the same, besides that HDMI is encrypted.
If the Moni finds a HDMI on the display side it produces HDMI, if it finds a DVI it sends DVI without encryption.

I need to send a video or s-video out to the other TV I use for my kid.
Why don't you give him your existing DVD Player, or do you need two of them in the livingroom;)

Hehe... took me awhile to figure "bumped" out. I believe bumped is how you could keep a thread active-as in most recent replies. Bumping a thread helps keep the thread at the top of the list in hopes of more replies. I have bumped a thread because I am enthusiastic for a reply.

PJ is a projector
fp is a front projector
pq is picture quality
rptv is rear projection tele-vision

ataadmc is all these acronyms are driving me crazy :)

there are about 10 thousand more and some of those have double meanings depending on what forum they are used ;)

Anyone truly believe that the new estimated shipping (or arrival to Extremephono) date of July 15th (on extremephono's site) for the V880N will hold this time?? Any thoughts?

I do not know about the rest of you but I just want to order mine ASAP.

If extremephono reads this: Will you accept returns on the V880N if the IR remote issue remains with the Pioneer Equipment, since Momitsu has claimed it should not still be an issue unlike for the V880 it is a known issue (buyer be ware)?

Well I guess what the manual says goes. I asked a question earlier in this thread on support for superG wireless pcmcia cards and the answer I got could probably be applied here also. The 880N platform is built on uClinux and if FLAC was incorporated by uClinux it would have been easy for Momitsu to include it. Firmware upgrades to incorporate this support might take a while since the feature has to move from the linux community to uClinux then to vendors who modify it for their platform to delivery to the end user via firmware upgrade. I could be off target here, correct me if I'm wrong.

question.... can I use the DVI to VGA adapter and still use the customized resolutioin? I recently bought an X1 and would love to hook it up this way? Also, which resolution would I set the Momitsu 880n at to achieve the best picture on this 800x600 projector?

Thanks for the help...
