Bob Sorel 01-05-04, 03:23 PM Due to the fact that a couple of people have emailed me requesting that I reopen the old thread, I have decided to open a new thread for people to discuss the card.
Before posting any questions here, I ask that you read the first thread in its entirety so that the same questions are not posted again and again. Please understand that it is your responsibility to research your questions, and that people are willing to help you out as long as you do your homework first.
The first thread is located here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=264533
Also, just in case there are still people that do not understand, Cliff Watson is here in this forum of HIS OWN ACCORD, and does not represent ANY COMPANY, including MIT or Digital Connection, regardless of appearances and suppositions. I did not ask Cliff for his permission to open this thread, so he is in no way obligated to answer any questions, or for that matter, to even make an appearance. I have opened this thread so that people can further discuss among themselves issues and questions regarding the MDT-120. If Cliff chooses to participate, then so much the better for all of us, but please refrain from making expectations.
With that said, then go ahead and reopen the discussion, and most of all, have fun!
jb33 - from the other thread:
Cliff, the problems around nvapu.sys seem to be that the Nforce Audio system does not support hardware acceleration. dxdiag tells me it will only play sounds in the software buffer.
Any chance MyHD could be "fixed" to support playback on audio sub systems with no hardware acceleration?
jb
I have 2 MYHD systems, the ASUS P4G8X Deluxe and ASUS P4TE. They both have on-board audio (different chipsets though).
The P4TE is an older Mboard.
Both systems work fine with the MYHD card.
I don't have an Nforce Audio but your post prompted me to run DXdiag on BOTH systems.
The P4TE displays the same message you get about not supporting HW accel and use the SW buffer.
The P4G8X DOES have HW accel.
Unless this error you describe is maybe specific to the Nforce card, HW versus SW accel is not the issue.
Can't you just try a different Audio card to prove it?
Unless you are a very rare PC 'enthusiast' (hate the term geek) , you must have a box with plenty of spare PC parts like an audio card:)

Using the new beta software, my system unexpectedly began recording last night at 8PM. So, I checked the reservation capture settings, and the days for all my captures were changed. Did anyone else encounter this, or is it just something weird in my setup?
Last thread got closed before I got a chance to ask this one so I hope Cliff is reading.
I am using the Beta 1.62.3
Here's the scoop:
I had recorded Star Wars AOTC onto my hard disc when it was shown on HBOHD. It plays from disc just fine.
I have not used my MITS D-VHS for quite some time but decided I needed the disc space so I played AOTC from disc through MYHD and had it also record to D-VHS at the same time.
I did NOT use Dvhstool.
No problems during the playback/record session.
When watching the tape from MYHDlast night, I found that after about 10 minutes, the sound would start breaking up and get progressively worse.
Hitting Pause then Play cleared the sound up for another 10 or so minutes.
Anyone else (Cliff, hint hint) observe this same behaviour?
I do not have an HT machine or a 865 chipset machine.
FPM is set to the default install value of 0.
Thanks for any feedback,
Joe
Joe, have you tried setting FPM to 1? It seems like the beta may have an issue correctly setting the right mode. In previous versions FPM-0 worked fine for me. In the beta I got audio problems on some streams. If I pause or rewind the video, it would smooth out temporarily, then start 'stuttering' again.
TPeterson suggested setting it to FPM-1, and that solved my problem. (of course, that was with a file on a local hard drive, so it may not have the same effect on D-VHS, but it's worth a shot..)
Hey Joe,
Yeah, would have been nice If I could have pointed a finger at the lack of HW acceleration but alas...

It seems to have fixed my D-VHS tape audio problem but it made the audio on regular disc recordings cause dropouts every 30 seconds or so.
I know Cliff is reading this and has a D-VHS so I will wait to hear from him.
IN the meantime, I am going back to FPM =0 knowing that any D-VHS recordings I make are A Okay.
Very strange.

lonndoggie 01-05-04, 09:30 PM First: I hope that closing of the existing thread was more of an administrative thing, and not Cliff getting fed up with the our collective endless requests for help. But if it's the later, I can't say as I blame him.
Cliff, wherever you are out there: Thanks for the superhuman effort you put into this. I hope you take some time off...and then come back, 'cause we need you!
Now then: I've got a new problem that's got me bugged but good. MyHD won't give control back to the video card! I've got a Radeon 9200 hooked up via the passthru to the MyHD-120. I'm using the new beta (I miss that thread, too), and have been since the day it came out. Within the last couple of days, once I start MyHD, I can't get back to the desktop:
-- If I click the "HD" button on the remote (or the escape key on the keyboard) to go back to the desktop/overlay--nothing happens.
-- If I hit the power button on the remote, the screen goes black. The PC is humming away, but nothing appears.
-- If I hit the power button on the remote again, MyHD fires back up, and I get its picture.
It takes a reboot to get the desktop back.
When I get home, I'm going to see if, somehow, the "separate monitor" feature got turned on--maybe that's what's doing it. If so, can't imagine how that got set.
Any other ideas? Anyone else seeing this?
Thanks--
lonndoggie --
I'm seeing similar behavior on my system, but slightly different. I also have the MyHD 120 hooked up pass-through (from a Sapphire Radeon 9000) and am running the latest beta s/w from MIT. My MyHD beta s/w is locking up fairly regularly (but not after any particular interval -- sometimes it will run all day without locking up). When it locks up, it continues to receive and display video/audio from the MyHD card but will not respond to remote or keyboard commands -- exept for one.
I discovered this by accident when it locked up once while I was watching from the desktop with the overlay display. At the point of lock-up, it generated a Windows XP bug report dialog. I figured it might be doing that in the background during the other lock-ups while using the "HD" display, so I hit the return key to dismiss the dialog. This seems to work every time. After hitting return, the HD display goes black (the program has quit, but the VGA bypass switch on the card is still set to HD). Then the remote will work again and when I re-launch the program it switches back to the desktop with overlay.
This is probably more interesting than useful, but sounds similar to your problem.
I've been lurking in the forum for some time now, but figured I've got enough experience now that maybe I can start to contribute something to "the collective".
:)

That's brilliant! I've gotten the occasional random, stray "send an error report" dialog, but not recently (then again, hard to tell, given the way it's behaving). Assuming this comes back (yes, comes back...stay tuned), I'll try the "hit enter/restart MyHD" fix.
As for my own diagnostics, checking to see if "using separate monitor" was checked was impossible, because I had MyHD set to launch into HD mode, where that setting isn't availble, and from which there was no return. So, figured I'd look in the registry and find the conveniently named key for using a seperate monitor and change it from a 1 to a zero (or vice-versa)--but there was no such obvious key. There was such a key for starting in HD mode, and I changed that--but it STILL launced in HD mode. Sigh.
So...I uninstalled the app, driver, and card (via control panel, not physically), and reinstalled. Problem went away. Whew. Had to re-scan my channels, and have to go re-set my recording schedules, but it's BACK.
Thanks Dayvo for NOT lurking--

karsten112 01-06-04, 04:16 AM Hello ,
first i wish a happy new year here from Germany to all AVS forum members.
I received my HD 120 card over the Christmas holidays in NY , and i want to thank digital connections for the a+ service.
Now i have 2 questions:
1. is there any way to play BS. files with the card , because i get no picture with BS. Files.
2.are there plans to upgrade the card to PAL user like us in Europe or Australia ?
In the first my hd 120 thread there are postings that the new Beta software does not play pal DVD´s. I have absolutely no problems to play Pal DVD´s at all.
greats
Karsten
Sorry but I seemed to have missed the window on the previous thread. I just got my MyHD 120/DVI board installed.
Here are the problems so far:
1) DVI to the 503CMX 1280x768 does not fill the screen. It is about 10 pixels short on both the horizontal and the vertical. Horizontal is shifted to the right. I cannot compensate with the 503 settings to correct it.
Are there any setting to correct this?
2) While recording with the VOP window active, right-click on the control panel skin crashed the program. Restarting did not resume recording.
3) DVD - Cannot run Avia or Digital Video Essential, sub menus hang.
Thanks,
Rich
P.S. Are time table on the next version?

Kei Clark 01-07-04, 01:26 AM londoggie and davyo,
I am also seeing the same problem occasionally with the new software, but I previously had intermittent problems with Radeon card (and been way too lazy to change it out) which masked the problem. Not sure exactly what triggers it, I recall once it was scheduled record to DVHS.
RichB,
I also have a Pioneer plasma and 1080i or 720p as there seems to be some issues with 768, although I'm not certain what it is as this resolution seems to be accurate with my Sony LCD. I'll check again when I get back from CES.
The crashing problem as been reported to MIT by Cliff.
Not certain about the Digital Video Essentials as I have not tried it yet. I believe Cliff was able to use it without problems, but I will check it again after CES.
karsten112 01-08-04, 02:34 PM Hello ,
if somebody has any problems with Watching Pal DVD´s , try the
1360 X 768p resolution.
For me it is the best way.
Karsten
Here is another bug (in case we are being monitored):
Watching DVD connected via DVI does not disable the screen saver. The screen saver comes up and when I press a key it exits HD mode.

karsten112 01-08-04, 02:52 PM Hello ,
if i connect the MyHD with the cable-out to the CD in of my Sound card , i get no Sound from the Sound-cards spdif out.
I tried every possible setting the MyHD application.
Is there a special trick ?
KArsten
you can send the sound out the sound card directly. disconnect the spdif cable from the MyHD output. In audio settings, select wave (choices are cable, spdif, and wave). then in the dropdown menu to the right choose spdif. Wave tells MyHD you want to use the sound card for output. spdif specifies dolby 5.1 and DTS as the output type where applicable.

Joe - sorry to respond to a question with a question but I'm interested in how you get the HBOHD output stream for recording. I'd like to be able to time-shift the four high def cable channels I have.

marcelo3d 01-08-04, 03:53 PM Why is this thread UnOfficial? What made the previous one Official?
Just wondering.

karsten112 01-09-04, 02:06 AM Hello ,
i think this thread was called " Un " official because in the first Thread some people thought Cliff was a kind of Hotline for them.
But he is not.
I am very thankfully for his unofficial work and help.

Bill.
As of 02/11/04, it will be a moot point but I thought I would answer to spread the word in case other folks have not heard the news that DISH is screwing it’s model 5000 customers.
I use a DISH 5000 (actually, I have 2 of them) with the optional HD modulator.
The modulator has an RF connector on the back that outputs a signal that looks like a VHF ATSC compliant signal. The only thing output through the modulator are the High Defintion channels from DISH.
Any STB or HD PC card like the MYHD sees this as an OTA VHF station
I have had this rig for a number of years and before the advent of the HD PC cards like the Hipix, I used a Panasonic DST51 STB and Panny HD1000 D-VHS to record.
Now I use the MYHD for this. The Panny was replaced with a MITS D-VHS.
Have a library of at least 90 HD Movies.
I can record SHOHD,HBOHD and HDPPV.
Starting in August 2002, with the rollout of Discovery HD theater, DISH starting using 8PSK for all their new HD transmissions so the 5000 does not recognize these HD channels (Discovery HD,Hdnet,etc.).
FYI,During that rollout, DISH had a free 1 month preview period of Discovry HD and they kept transmitting it with the 4PSK format so the 5000 did recognize it. I have 15 hours of great eye candy on tape.
Here is why it is now a moot point.
In February, DISH is moving SHOHD and HBOHD from the 61.5 ( and 148 for you west folks) bird to the 110 bird and transmitting it in 8PSK so the 5000’s HD modulator will cease to function.
NO more recording HD programs from DISH with STB’s or cards like MYHD.
That mesage you see on the program guide for SHOHD,etc. is what this is all about.
We all knew this was coming and assumed (incorectly) that DISH would wait until the 921 was widely avaialble before dumping on it's loyal customers.
I am on about 6 waiting lists for the 921 and if I don't get one by the 'death' of the 5000 in February,
I will be droppping DISH altogether in February and using my now useless 61.5 dish to get VOOM.
Can’t record but I get a large selection of HD movies so I don’t have to deal with HBOHD/SHOHD showing movies I want at wierd hours like 2:00 AM like it is now on DISH.
Sorry for the rant but I guess you can tell that I (and MANY others) are really P***d about this.
I did answer your question:)

Thanks for your help , but i doesn not work.
The Sound card will give out Sound from the DVD Rom and other Programs.
I tried all possible Settings and Connections ( do i need the Cable or not ? ).
Is it possible that it don't work because the Beta Software ?

That you did, and then some! Thanks for the very informative post - I was not familiar with dish as I have the Sci Atl 3100HD STB from local cable company. I share the frustration of HBOHD and other HD programming times. I was hoping that another provider like voom might make the digital stream available, but from your post I'm assuming they don't. But if the new system from dish will support it, I'm wondering why you might change to something else rather than wait for the new hardware?
Thanks again for the info. I realize I strayed from the MyHD topic (except that I want to use the MDP-120 to record the content) and should do my own homework on this.
Bill
snordolio 01-09-04, 12:56 PM I use a MyHD 120 to record some SD cable shows and am currently using the latest divx codec to do so. Unfortunatly My PC is only a P4 1.9 (OC'd) and the highest resolution I can get to work correctly is 320x240, 640x480 is too much for the poor PC. A 30min show file is about 750meg when using divx.
The recorded SD material is watchable, but breakups do occure when too much action takes place on the screen.
What codecs are you folks using to record SD with?

You can stray from the topic. After all this is the UNofficial MYHD thread:)
See If your cable company offers the Sci Atl Explorer 8000HD then you can record for later watching as that is a DVR.
If I had that choice in my area, that is what I would do.
Voom will make the stream available sometime in the future - getting that info from folks reporting back from CES.
As far as your question about ditching DISH, it is the principle of the thing.
I have a model 6000 and 2 Model 5000's with almost the full programming package from DISH and have been a customer for 5 years.
Both of those 5000's are going to be useless for recording HD as that is all I use them for and DISH could care less. They are not making any upgrade offers except for a $149 upgrade to the model 821 which is nothing more than a newer version of the 6000 which I already have one of.
My 5000's will be as useful to me as a boat anchor.
Joe
The first beta for the new release has been very impressive.. I have played several DVD's and had no major playback issues.
The one minor annoyance that I noticed was an old problem: the FF/REW stopped working. I would see FF or REW on the OSD, but it would have no effect on playback. Anyone else run into this?

Have not run into that problem. FF and RW work okay.
Anyone try out Laura Croft:Cradle of Life?
It worked fine until the last fifteen minutes when I was getting a LOT of audio dropouts. Started happening around the scene where they enter the area where Pandora's box was.
VERY annoying. Pause/Play did NOT fix it.
Also, I could navigate on the OSD to the Special features but when selected, they would not play.
Even though Cliff has not said a word in this thread, you know he is reading it.
Any chance you could try out this DVD and see if you can replicate?
Thanks,
Joe

I use Divx 640x480 4Mbps sample rate and get solid video/audio with a P4 2.5GHz system with 512MB ram, and Maxtor 250GB ATA133 hard drive. File size about 4GB for 2 hours of capture. If you're having trouble at 320x240 you might want to look into your hard drive performance as well.
BTW after you get it working solid you will still probably have the audio sync problem for any captures more than 1/2 hour or so. I have to re-synchronize my audio using virtualdubmod - was tedious at first but pretty much routine now. Cliff posted earlier that he's requested MIT to provide a codec that works better, but no idea if they're actually working on it.

BenDover 01-10-04, 01:23 PM i haven't yet u/g'd to the holiday release of the sw/driver; i know this has been asked and answered but how do i retain my channel list(s) ?
wish there was a way to do the autoscan thing but have it add to the list instead of just recreating it, this way i can have multiple scans with different antenna alignments.
TPeterson 01-10-04, 02:14 PM "how do i retain my channel list(s) ?"
Ben, use Regedit to save the MyHD branch of the registry before you uninstall MyHD. Then, after installing the update, double-click on the .REG file you created to restore the MyHD branch. (You may also need to change FPM, for example, to make up for new behavior in the beta)
richierich 01-10-04, 02:20 PM Correction to what I originally wrote. It also won't FF/REW in the last chapter of a movie played on a DVD. Still suggests that the problem is not unique to the beta software and allows for the possibility that the file I was watching was a single file so the lack of FF/REW may have been because it was a last file rather than one with lots of errors in it.

I was on vacation during the short beta period so I have the older software. However, I noticed that when playing back recorded shows the FF/REW doesn't work on HD files with signal break-up (recordings made during a storm while I was on vacation). Thus I suspect that it may be a problem specific to the integrity of the file being played (some files will play fine, other's with something "nonstandard" will not FF/REW) and not necessarilly introduced with the beta software.
Oh how I envy those of you who were able to get the beta software!
BenDover 01-10-04, 02:32 PM i didn't realize that it wasn't available any longer...
Hey all,
I just picked up one of these cards and pretty much have everything figure out except that screen caps on 1080i feeds come out as 1440x1080? 720p feeds come out as 1280x720 which I assume is correct.
Also the OSD text and volume seems to stop showing up on the screen after a while. The remote works for the volume, it just doesn't display the text or the volume bar in full or window mode.
Using version 1.61.1u
Thanks for the help.
BenDover 01-11-04, 11:56 AM ok, just saw that you can "save" your channel listings to files and then load them...that is exactly what i wanted...an enhancement would be to be able to "merge" them, but maybe this way is best, point the antenna and load only those channels for that azimuth.

Understood - it's hard to keep supporting a company that doesn't take care of loyal customers. With the income they get from subscription fees you'd think they'd be willing to do free or heavily discounted upgrades to keep customers.
I thought about the 8000HD but didn't want to own yet another piece of home theater equipment when MyHD pretty much does everything I need... and it's nice having all my recorded material in one place, and portable if I need it.

Now you really lost me.
Our discussion started because you originally asked how I was recording HBO since you wanted to be able to and MYHD does not do cable.
You ditch the Sci Atl 3100HD STB that you have and get the 8000HD which is a DVR.
You will not be adding another piece of HT equipment.
How can MYHD do most of what you need when all it can do is record OTA and NOT cable?
After watching several DVD's using the Beta release, with no problems.. I ran into one that seemed to have the issue of a dropout on scene changes.
The DVD was "Cube 2: Hypercube" (the movie nowhere near as good as the first movie). It dropped out several times on scene changes. The video would stop for a second, the DD indicator on my stereo would go out, then it would recover.
Has anyone else seen this with the beta version?

Cube 1 was one of the worst movies of all times so the dopouts on Cube 2 were doing you a favor. It was dropping you a hint. Turn me off:)

Good point - I should have said that MyHD *could* do what I need if I could get the digital stream out of the cable box into MyHD similar to the way you described with dish. Obviously what I want and what I can get are two different things at the moment. Sorry for the confusing statement.
Your point that the 8000 would replace the existing 3100HD is also a good one. Maybe I should take another look.

nemodallas 01-11-04, 06:03 PM Does anyone have a copy of the MDP-120 Beta 1.62.3 software that can be posted for download? I have been trying to find it since the released version does not play DVD's from a file very well....no menu :)
The orginal software is not on the website anymore
From the posts I beleive it will allows playing back DVD's from a file.
Thanks
Chris
rgathright 01-11-04, 07:38 PM Probably not. It had so many bugs that it is being redone.

I have a copy and I'm sure many of us do. It's definitely better at DVD playback but is not without other problems - I am still using it as I still feel it's better than the alternatives. I have no idea why they chose to pull the beta from distribution - if it was my software I'd want as many people testing it as possible. With beta code I thought the understanding was that you get what you get, and they don't even have to listen to your complaints if they don't want to, so I don't see the down side to leaving it out there. I know I'd be pretty frustrated if I missed the window on this beta release.
I don't know if I have the right to pass the beta code on to you since it's not my software, so I'm reluctantly choosing not to do so. I don't know if you will get anywhere with whoever you bought the hardware from, but my recommendation would be to push that path first.

I just installed a new card last week. Use the one linked in Cliff's post above yours. It's newer than the one that comes with the card.
BTW, I'd suggest installing it using a separate monitor to display your computer desktop. The hardest part of the entire process is getting your computer desktop to display on your TV, and by using a separate monitor you can make sure everything is working besides the resolution to your TV.
I must say after reading all the posts in this forum I was very concerned I would have an installation headache. In fact, after installing the card, drivers and software I was able to view HDTV on my TV immediately. The difficult part was setting the resolution for the Windows desktop to display on the TV using the loop through cable.
As to computer resolution here's what I did. Right click on the desktop, select properties to bring up the Display Properties box. Select the Settings tab and then click "Advanced." Click the Adapter tab, then click "List All Modes." Select 640 x 480 at 60 Hertz. Hit Okay until XP changes your resolution to that setting.
To get a higher resolution that does not overscan, try then buy Powerstrip. Set 640 x 480 as your default resolution in Powerstrip, and that way by hitting Ctrl-Alt-S you can switch back to that setting if a new resolution you try doesn't work. For my TV one of the "HDTV Derived" settings gave the best resolution without overscan.

I've had MyHD for over 18 months (I'm not a newbie). Anyway, about 2 months ago I pulled my 120 card out of my HTPC in favor of accessDTV (I was watching many shows "live" and the pause feature let me start 10 minutes in and continue without commercials). Anyway, I decided today to put the Myhd card in my other networked computer (a Dell Precision 350) which has had a Myhd 100 card working in it in the past. I put the 120 in today and can't get overlay video or audio thru my PC speakers. I've got a digital channel showing 87 percent and if I play a recorded file, it seems to be playing fine (FF, REW, etc.) but still no audio or overlay video. I don't have a vga cable to try HD video. For the audio I've tried wave with and without cable, dolby and stereo. Overlay video is set to default VOP 30 fields/sec. Thanks in advance for any help.
p.s. I even tried removing software and driver and trying 1.60. Got same results so went back to 1.6x from 12/23/03
Right after that previous post, I went back to the app. Switching to ant2 gave me A02 analog station (showed no-signal) but I did get a burst of static noise thru my speakers for a second or so. Went back to Ant1 and then got a Blue Screen of Death - error MDP100_XP.sys address F7463D2E base at F7455000. Had to reboot. Thoughts?

Sounds like the MDP-120 doesn't like that PCI slot for some reason--or isn't fully inserted? I suggest trying a different slot.
BTW, I don't understand your comment about VGA cable--do you mean that you don't have the passthrough cable with which to hook up your computer's display to the HD output or what?
I need help connecting my MyHD card to my tv (pioneer elite 530HD) and my pc monitor at the same time. I finally got the DVI cable I ordered and when I plug it in to the tv it shuts down my computer monitor. What settings do I need to set MyHD to to be able to use my pc and see the MyHD output on my tv at the same time? A couple of times I got it to work by just unplugging and plugging the cable back in, but not anymore.

I'll try another slot - I'm sure it's seated ok. About the cable, my 20" plasma uses DVI and I don't have a vga cable for passthrough or otherwise. I don't plan on using this computer for playback, so HD mode not neccessary.

Make sure that "Using Separate Monitor" is checked on the "VGA Setup" tab of the MyHD configuration Control Panel.
after using the myhd mdp-100 for about a year, i finally upgraded to the mdp-120, mainly for the dvi-passthrough and the better reception (and the better analog cable reception was a plus). luckily, i had a copy of my pre-mdp-100 system ghosted, so i was able to install the mdp-120 "from scratch".
i'm happy with the 120 so far. the dvi passthrough is great, the reception is better (not as much as i hoped--i was getting 30-50%, now it 40-60%), and the analog cable reception is much better. but i have noticed a couple of things. i did some searches in the old "official" thread but didn't find any answers.
my system:
asus p4b266 (845d motherboard)
1.8a ghz p4, 512mb ram
xp pro
ati radeon 9000
on-board c-media sound
sanyo plv-70
myhd driver v1.62.3.11
myhd app v1.62.2-us
i have a vga-cable from the radeon to a crt monitor, a dvi-cable from the radeon to the mdp-120 daughtercard, then a dvi-cable from the mdp-120 daughtercard to the projector.
1) i connected the ota antenna to antenna 1, and reception was fine. when i connected analog cable to antenna 2, reception on antenna 1 went to 0 (i didn't even switch inputs--just plugging the cable in made it go to 0). i switched the ota antenna to antenna 2 and the analog cable to antenna 1, and everything went back to normal.
2) in my previous set-up with the mdp-100, i had a vga-cable from radeon to crt monitor, dvi-cable from radeon to plv-70 projector, and vga-cable from mdp-100 to plv-70 projector, and i had "separate monitor" checked. i could switch the desktop from monitor to projector by hitting alt-f5, and i could switch the projector from desktop to fullscreen by changing the projector input.
now, with the mdp-120 and the dvi-daughtercard (connections described above), i can switch from desktop to fullscreen just by hitting the hd button on the remote. it's great, because it was always a pain to switch inputs on the projector (involved several steps, going through the projector menu). however, i can no longer switch to the crt monitor by hitting alt-f5, and when i look at the radeon settings under the "display" tab, everything is grayed out--i can't select two monitors like before.
that's a pain because sometimes i like to work on the htpc without having to fire up the projector. i made the mistake of trying to enable "separate monitor" to see if that would fix things and realized that i was stuck in fullscreen mode (had to plug the projector directly into the radeon to unselect that).
3) maybe related to #2, when i boot up the computer, the projector output is blank. i have to start myhd (hitting the power button on the remote) and then the dvi-passthrough works, even if i subsequently shut down myhd. so it looks like the passthrough doesn't work unless it's been enabled by the myhd app at least once...?
4) with the mdp-100, i used to be able to get spdif sound through my motherboard's spdif output by checking wave and selecting the spdif option in the pulldown menu. that doesn't seem to work with the mdp-120. spdif directly from the mdp-120 works fine, though. not a big deal, but it would be cool if i could fire up myhd without having to change any inputs (with the mdp-100 it was always an ordeal to fire up myhd, switch the video input on the projector, then switch the audio input on my receiver).
other than those things, i like the mdp-120 much better than the mdp-100. anyone have any experience with those issues? sorry if it was covered in the other thread, but i didn't see anything in my searches or in the manual.
thanks,
bob

Wanted to highlight this as I'm having the same problem. Others have described your sound problem (wave, spdif not working) though I don't have it. Think it may be soundcard specific and Cliff may have written up something on it in the beta thread.

I don't have the DVI daughterboard on my MDP-120, but what you describe doesn't sound like normally operating hw. Have you called DC (assuming you purchased from them) Tech Support 800# ? That's what I would try in your shoes.

StormCrow 01-13-04, 08:03 PM Regarding the 1.6.3 Beta....It was excellent to finally have 1080i DVD playback!!!
But...I'm back to 1.6.2.1.
The only reason I had to go back was that KABC 7 in Los Angeles would have no audio in playback. (This station is known for it's audio problems ;o) It is 5.1...possibly the only one to do so out here.....Also 720P. I was relieved that trusty 1.6.2.1 plays all the recordings fine.
Being a beta, I'm not complaining at all...In fact I want to thank CW and all the others that are working on getting us up res DVD playback :D
I look forward to the official release.

Try 1.6.3.mumble beta again, and change the file play mode (FPM) setting in the registry to 1 or 2 (I think--not at the HTPC right now). Not 0, and not 4, anyway. In the old official thread(s), I'd posted of similar problems with ABC (LA and San Diego), with no audio playback. Changing the file play mode did the trick.
BTW, there is plenty of 5.1 audio over the air in LA...try CSI, or Soundstage or "Jakers!", a CGI animation thing on KCET.

I'm kinda new to HD HTPC'ing. I'm running OTA with the myHD. What is the technical name for the format the signal is in for this? Is it ATSC encoded?
What about for something like HD over digital cable? Someone mentioned QAM encoding. Can anyone straighten this out?
The reason I ask is I may have to move to an area of the city where OTA reception is poor, so I'm wondering if I can switch to Comcast digital cable with HD and keep using my myHD for PVR'ing HD.
Thanks!

Both cable and OTA are "ATSC" (as opposed to NTSC, the ugly analog TV standard ;)). Comcast cable is typically 256QAM encoded, while the OTA method in the U.S. is "8VSB" (8-level virtual sideband). IIRC, QAM is used for OTA in Europe, where multipath is thought to be a greater problem than range. (Somebody must've thought the reverse was true here--but that sure isn't the case where I live, near San Francisco)

marcelo3d 01-16-04, 12:50 AM ianneub,
It uses the brodcaster's PSIP information. There is no requirement for brodcasters to send that, so most of us get nothing in the guide.
You can use TitanTV, but not from HD mode.

marcelo3d is correct but the OSD program guide DOES work to allow one to manually set up a scheduled recording.

God bless you! I have been languishing with the latest release version of MyHD. Tonight, I'm going to move up to the beta version so I can improve DVD playback! (I removed my DVD player from my HT set-up when I installed my HTPC, assuming that I would be getting great DVD playback from the HTPC. MyHD seems to be the best option for this since it doesn't require me to set multiple PowerStrip settings for desktop and DVD.)

Actually, I have both MyHD and a standalone tuner. The tuner displays the program guide from several local channels. The MyHD does not. MyHD does successfully re-map to each station's respective virtual channel, so it is seeing the PSIP data, but the guide does not work.
This is all OTA, no D* or anything like that... I'm using the latest drivers, latest Windows updates, latest everything. Seems it would have to be a flaw within MyHD.
I don't see PSIP either. And many of the local stations in LA are outputting PSIP. Does the MyHD have a PSIP parser, or is the guide just a blank placeholder for now?
BTW PSIP guide info is the way to go, not xmltv (nevermind that if MIT used XMLTV they might find themselves getting sued by Tribune Media Services or Gemstar).

I think I've seen this before. The front page of the PSIP EPG is missing guide data, however, if you press the Guide Button again and then select stations by call signs it will be updated.
Can't test at the moment because my one and only station that sends guide data is off air.
DirectorBoy 01-16-04, 11:51 AM Will try to remember to test this later. Thanks, Cliff.
MyHD DVI connected to a Pioneer 503CMX 1280x768 does not fill the screen.
There are about 8 pixels unused at the bottom, 6 at the top, 10 on the sides. Are there any adjustments including config file/registry that I can try to correct this?
I have attached an image of the bottom left corner. It is a little dark, but you can see the unused pixels.
Thanks,

marcelo3d 01-16-04, 12:58 PM You may want to try ScanSetup (attached) and set all parameters to zero.
Make sure MyHD is not running when you change the parameters, or they won't work.

Cliff Watson 01-16-04, 01:34 PM When using ScanSetup one important constraint is that the difference of (top+bottom) value between overscan and underscan should be less than 8 if the input and output resolution are both 1080i. If not, the color stripes (color ringing) will appear on the right side.
Can anyone help me with playback audio dropout problems? I have no problems playing back files recorded on every station except ABC-HD 7-1 here in NYC. I first realized it when I tried to watch Alias recorded from Sunday. There were audio dropouts thru out the program. I thought it was just a problem with the signal or something. But it happens on all shows I record on ABC. I have 100 signal strength. No problem when watching live tv. Also no problems from shows record on CBS, NBC or Fox.
I switched the FPM to 1 and it seems to have fixed the problem. I wish I tried that before watching Alias on VHS.
will scansetup have any effect on the desktop and/or the video output when using the dvi daughter card with video card passthrough?
thanks, jb
marcelo3d 01-16-04, 11:57 PM It affects the output when in HD mode, not the passthough (desktop).
I don't have the 120, so only can tell you that it does work in YPbPr mode. I don't know about DVI.
marcelo3d and cliff,
Thanks for scansetup and the advice.
I think I know what overscan is. I am not sure what underscan is though. There was 12 top overscan and 4 for underscan. Why would you have both of these values?
Checking out a few channels I found that 8' in all the overscans and 0's all the underscans works well.
Does changing these values affect the picture displayed or the 1-1 mapping of pixels? Just curious.
Also. I know the powerstip values for the screen. Is it possible to setup a custom resolution with these settings?
-- Rich
marcelo3d 01-17-04, 01:21 PM As far as I understood, if you set overscan and underscan to the same value, you get a black bar of that width, maintainig the 1:1 pixel ratio. Anything else scales the picture a little, I think.
If you have Avia, you can use the overscan (or the pixel cropping) test image and see what it is doing.
I set all parameters to 0, but I think my default was 8 over + 8 under all around.
As for cusom resolutions, no, you can not program them in MyHD. They need to come pre-programmed from MIT.
I'm glad your problem is fixed.
M.-
After using the beta version for a couple weeks now, I would say that the DVD playback is improved over previous versions. The audio/video dropout on scene change / fade to black was eliminated on several titles. However, I have still encountered it on several titles, such as: Cube 2, Nicholas Nickleby, Focus, Winged Migration, and The Hours.
In most of those movies, it only happens in the beginning / introduction, where the blacked transitions are more common. So, it's not a huge problem. But, on other movies where they use those transitions throughout the movie, like Cube 2, it can be distracting, and even cause you to miss dialog.
Has anyone else tried to watch subtitles on a DVD with the beta version? I tried to watch a Spanish movie, but when I selected any of the captions it had no effect.
I could swear I had used subtitles with this version before. But, maybe I'm confusing it with the last released version.

Coincidence. I watched that DVD for the first time last night with the beta SW ( ie. I never saw it before).
Before I got into the movie,I had to check out some things.
Captions,Subtitles displayed fine as well as navigation.
I had no trouble watching it with the DTS track.
Thing about this disc was that this was the first one since I started using the beta regularly for watching DVD's that didn't have that WOW effect in the PQ department.

Do you really think it looks any better than 1080i from the computer graphics card?

Use of third party player will not be supported.
"Do you really think it looks any better than 1080i from the computer graphics card?"
Yes I do. At most the graphics card is using a 6-tap scaler and MyHD uses a 19-tap scaler. Plus the color space conversion is strictly for video instead of graphics.
I think the DVD playback looks fantastic with most DVD's. It is as good as my H3D-II/DVI connected with a well mastered DVD.
There are times, when MyHD/DVD combs. At least in the beta, it does not appear to be very good at film/video detection/recovery.
Have others noticed this?

You know, I told my friend that very thing... What is a "tap" anyway :)
So I went and purchased an Audigy2 ZS. The card works fine in WinXP. Decoding of MyHD streams is perfect and I can run six channel Windows Media movies as well play DVD audio and multi channel surround sound games.
I also use Windows ME. Most of my HD movies are on DAT tape. The archiving software I use makes the tape look like a disk so playback and storage is easy but the software is only available for Windows 9x series of operating systems. Unfortunately, the Audigy and MyHD under Windows ME periodically loses sound. The sound when doing spdif passthrough in the Audigy also cuts off. My Revo worked fine under ME in passthrough mode but I could never get it to decode AC3 using Ac3Filter or WinDVD audio filters.
With the Audigy and MyHD, AC3 stream from the MyHD will be working fine for a few minutes and then silence. The only way to get the sound back is to have the MyHD play a file, or DVD, change wave type, or to restart MyHD. Under Windows XP, the sound never cuts off.
Has anyone else had the same problem occur in their systems? If so, are there any solutions?
Thanks..

Yes it is official.
sedavis76 01-19-04, 03:28 PM Is there a reference (manual) for the keyboard shortcuts or remote control buttons for playing a DVD in the latest beta? Right now I'm just guessing at what button to press to get the desired behavior I want.

Thanks Cliff, I will try some other titles tonight. The DVD I was using yesterday was "The Crimes of Padre Amaro". When I pressed the "Caption" button, it displayed 4 or 5 options, but none actually displayed.
I tried a few more disks, and found that I cannot get captions with any of them.
I rebooted, but that didn't effect it. I then removed all DVD-effecting software (AnyDVD) and tried a stored VOB file, and it didn't change the behavior. I tried a software DVD player, and captions worked fine.
When the next version is released, I'll do a clean re-install & see if it still has problems.

Thanks for the info! To summarize then, the myHD 120 will tune 8VSB, while Comcast cable is typically 256QAM encoded. So for me OTA is the only HD option with this card.
Are there any available 256QAM to 8VSB convertors available for people in my situation?

It's still in the first beta so there is no manual.
What behavior are you looking for with the remote?
Most buttoms function as marked (Audio, Captions, REW, Play, FF, Prev (as in chapter), Stop, Next (as in chapter), Aspect, and left/right/up/down/OK to navigate and select menu items.
Oddball names for DVD are Guide=DVD Menu and REC=Eject. FAV seems to function the same as Guide.
The number buttoms function the same as file play mode.

To add to what Cliff said, since I have 2 networked MYHD's, I have to use Girder and an IRMAN to control the second card with my learning remote.
In building the Girder file, I ran into some keys that were not documented well on the DC website or whose behavour was not what I expected.
This was not just for DVD control but all posible input sources.
I was going for complete control of MYHD via remote control and the OSD.
2 Examples of OSD use:
1) Select Audio Track on a DVD from the OSD menu.
Hit CTRL+A and the TV screen displays the a list of available audio tracks when in DVD mode that you have to select with the remote's navigation button.
2) The normal Guide button on the GUI brings up TITAN TV website on the PC but CTRL+G will bring up an OSD Guide that is appropriate for the input.
Ie. PSIP info ifo in tuner mode, DVD root guide if in DVD mode.
Here is a list with maybe a little better clarification of the Keyboard keys from DC's website:
Chan UP = UP Arrow
Chan Down = Down Arow
Favorite (for OSD use only) = CTRL+M
Input (For OSD use only) = CTRL+I
Okay = CTRL+Return
Menu (For OSD use only) = CTRL+E
Previous Channel toggle = SHIFT+ESC
Guide (For OSD use only) = CTRL+G
Audio Track Selection (For OSD use only)= CTRL+A
UP/Down Navigation on OSD = same as Channell up/Dwn
Left/Right Navigation on OSD = Left Arrow/Right Arrow
ESC (For OSD use only) = SHIFT+ESC
My Girder file has more than these because the DC website list gave me the other ones. I now have complete control via Girder of MYHD from the comfort of my couch.
These are just the ones that took a little fiddling by me to understand really what they did. Some of these say "in a future release" on DC's website but are working in this 1.62.3 beta.
Hope this helps instead of confusing.

AllenDB 01-20-04, 12:53 PM I've had my MDP-120 for a month and love it. After watching HDTV for over 2 years I can finally record it. I have 2 slight problems. I run the sound out of the line-out of the sound card into the AA1158. When I bring up MYHD and the AA1158 switches over, the sound volume is quite reduced. I have turned the volume up on all the controls on the PC. Wave and everything. Still the volume is quite reduced. Is there just some impedance difference between the line-out on a PC and audio in on the TV? I found an equalizer that tweaks the sound on the mobo and ran all the sliders to the top. Now the sound is almost the same as output from the DTC-100. I have set Wave on and cable off in MYHD.
Second the HDTV picture displayed from the mdp-120 is slightly overblown and as such I lose a bit of the picture all around the edges. I'm not sure I'm explaining this right. It's like it zoomed in a bit. I know there is a Zoom option and it is turned off. My aspect ration 16:9 and Auto for the other one. As an example on a FOX (480p I know) from the DTC-100 the Fox logo in the lower left is several/many pixels from the left edge of the picture. The same image thru the mdp-120 the Fox logo is ON the edge of the image.
I do not run my monitor to the HDTV system. Too many problems. I use the remote to accomplish all I need. Works great. I have an Abit KD-7 running XP Pro. Had no problems with installation or running.
marcelo3d 01-20-04, 12:59 PM AllenDB,
Is the DTC-100 set to output 1080i or the native resolution of the program?
What is the resolution that MyHD is outputing?
Maybe the overscan in your TV is different for one scan rate than for the other. Try setting both devices to the same scan rate and compare again.
My .02

AllenDB 01-20-04, 01:46 PM I haven't touched the DTC-100 in a long long time after initial tweaking. I'll go home tonight and poke around with your suggestions in mind. Thanks.

Schlotkins,
Does the MyHD cards have the chroma bug during DVD playback?
I brought up Toy Story last night and it looked great no chroma problems.
I find the ATSC reception is not very good. Here in the Boston area I can get 50% signal on a couple of stations with my Zenith HDS-520. The same channels break up clocking in at about 20%.
Are there any options to change the sensitivity settings?

Cliff Watson 01-22-04, 09:35 PM "Are there any options to change the sensitivity settings?"
Of course there is with a better antenna and preamp.
Cliff,
Of course there is with a better antenna and preamp.
I am 20 miles from the site. I have a 12' channel master antenna on my roof amplified.
As I said, no problem with Zenith 520 with the same signal. It is reporting half of the error rate.
I guess there is no way to tune the multi-path/versus sensitivity. At my location, I need sensitivity more than multi-path reduction.
I have never seen this, but it would be an interesting feature to be able to set the sensitivity/multi-path per channel.
Too bad though, I can't record on WBZ for WB. I have to watch these live.

A shot in the dark.
Try taking the pre-amp off for a while. Sometimes too strong a signal can be a bad thing. True, too much is usually associated with drop-outs, but reducing amplification has improved PQ in some instances.
I say this because, at 20 miles, you wouldn't have thought you needed a pre-amp.
Just a thought

Definitely, get rid of the preamp, at 40 miles from boston, I get every channel on my MDP120, CM 4248 antenna (4228 also worked fine too), no preamp is needed.

Cliff Watson 01-22-04, 10:40 PM "I guess there is no way to tune the multi-path/versus sensitivity. At my location, I need sensitivity more than multi-path reduction."
The beta2 software has been retuned for better lock-on and faster channel changing.
If you really are overpowering the front end you can pad the RF input to reduce signal without a reduction to other tuners. Sounds like you need all you can get for the 520.
I really do not think it is too much signal, since the problem occurs on the weakest stations. Anyway, removing the preamp is not an option right now. It is at the antenna on a snowy roof.
Cliff,
Is the beta 2, the last offical beta of the new 1/20 stuff?
I am currently running the last official beta.

Cliff,

I am currently running the last official beta.
No it is not. The 1/20 was beta1 and was in no way official.
You can test a lower signal level without removing the amp. For about $3 you can buy a 6 dB attenuator at Radio Shack.
What is the power level of the weak stations? Both the ABC and Fox engineers live ~20 miles from the tranmitters and using 12" roof mounted antenna with 25dB amp can't even receive their own signal. ABC is transmitting at 14kW and Fox at 15.6kW. One uses a DTC-100 and the other a Samsung 161 receiver.
I live 14 miles from the transmitter farm (all towers within 1/4 mi of each other) and using a CM4226 with CM7777 preamp feeding a coax system split to feed 7 different receivers. The low power stations are at 93% and higher power stations (256kW) at 100%.
Oh and the antenna is mounted on a tripod on my ground floor recessed patio, aimed up ~10 degrees (over the top of a 4 story building).
No it is not. The 1/20 was beta1 and was in no way official.
I am not sure I am following you here. Here are the two releases that I am describing. Dates, Sizes, and Versions, all say the 1/20 version is a later release. Perhaps not official, but later.
12/24/2003 12:09PM 5,202,623 MyHD_Usa_v1.62.3.1.exe
01/20/2004 03:43PM 5,207,025 MyHD_Usa_v1.62.3.2.exe
You can test a lower signal level without removing the amp. For about $3 you can buy a 6 dB attenuator at Radio Shack.
I will try that soon. But I do not think that this is the problem. I have many stations that get over 80% and they never have a problem.
Can't really say what the power levels are. The last documentation I can find is 3 months old.
Anyway, I just tried 56-1 here.
The Zenith 520 and 1080 receivers get about a 40-50% signal. No dropouts.
The MyHD 120 gets about 15%-20% frozen most of the time.
7-1 520 getting between 50% to 75% with a drop-out every minute or so.
7-1 MyHD getting between 0%-20% sporadically. Then it got better with a small breakup every minute or so. The program is hung. The channel is being displayed, but it will not respond.
I think MyHD is having trouble handing and recovering from errors in the signal.
-- Rich
Cliff Watson 01-23-04, 01:03 AM Like I said the 1/20 is not beta2 and is in no way official. An official release has yet to be made and will not be released until it is stable. The MIT folder is marked "TEST", not released.
Looks like you would be better off keeping the STB and returning the PCI card. MyHD needs 26% to lock solid without dropouts.
But on the other hand it seems odd that Jim is twice the distance from the transmitters and is able to tune the same channels.
"I think MyHD is having trouble handing and recovering from errors in the signal."
MyHD handles signal errors very well. I think you have either a bad card or bad software install. Try moving the coax cable to the other "F" connector and rescan the digital channels.
BenDover 01-23-04, 10:46 AM can moving it to a different coax connector on the card actually affect performance? if so, i should give that a try; i strangely enough have a similar observation, my hipix card reports a higher signal strength than the myhd card off the same feed...
Cliff,

I think you misunderstand me. I really like this card. It allows me to record and runs native rate to my Plasma.
I just want it to work better. It should be possible to improve and tune the product. It is with that in mind that I have been posting here.
If a stream is having display problems and I record it, will that stream be saved to a file in its original form? If so, I could provid sample streams to help debug the issue.

Schlotkins 01-23-04, 11:49 AM I live a little north of Worcester and am 30 miles from the towers (hills, more distance) and with a Fusion I (worse tuner) and an indoor antenna, I can get 7.1 with about 60% stength (minus very windy days, but that's because I'm surrounded by trees).

Ben,
I realize this question I am gonna ask is totally OT but this is an UNOFFICIAL thread.:)
I know you own all three of the HD cards(Hpix,MYHD,ADTV).
Now that you have had a month or 2 to play with each, which one do you like the best?
I have owned each of these cards at various times (even made the mistake in December of buying an ADTV card a second time because of the hoopla about the avsforum SW effort) but never all three at once.
Don't feel obligated to answer - I am just curious of what you think.
I believe there are only a handful of folks that have owned all three of these cards like you and me have.
Oh yeah - for me it's MYHD by a country mile.
Thanks,
Joe
BenDover 01-23-04, 07:03 PM Joe,
I'll give a quick answer now but I must say I haven't really taken them for a test drive since i've been too busy to really give them a workout fully.
when i had the adtv and the myhd before getting the hipix, i really liked the myhd better than the adtv but only because of the software. that may change radically when the new adtv s/w is released (any day now).
then i got my hipix and i must say i really like the hipix software and for some reason it was able to tune in a number of additional channels that the myhd just refused, and still refuses, to lock-in.
i promise that when i really start exercising these cards i will post a more thorough "my impressions" post but for now i have to cop out like eiffel has and say that each is different and has its strenght and weaknesses.
but for now, if i had to answer and give advice to someone who was about to buy based on present day state-of-affairs, i would say definitely go with the myhd.
your experience with the adtv: i saw your reaction coming from a mile (i should say many miles :) ) away. if you had the spare resources/time/cash to tinker around, you could have waited for the new software. but since you had two myhd cards and since you were already "entrenched" it was a foregone conclusion that you were going to have a bad experience; i don't mean that in a bad way either. if i get accustomed to something (software, hardware, etc.) it becomes very difficult to use/try something else since my familiarity/comfort level with the old is so high. you had remotes programmed, scripts created, an established "routine" for recording/saving/playing hd content.
anyway, like i said, right now, i would recommend the myhd to a new buyer. again, that may change in a few days; the adtv has "time-shifting" going for it and they are implementing it in a slick fashion...
Chancho 01-26-04, 03:43 PM Just received my MyHD-120 card, and I am using the DVI output from the radeon 7500 video card. Is there any benefit to getting the DVI daughter card for this board or is the DVI from my video card doing the same thing. I am using an AMD 1.4mhz HTPC to feed a front projector only. It's working fine, but I haven't tweaked anything or tried all the buttons yet. BTW - that little IR remote unit is great. I fed it through the ceiling from my second floor office, and attached it to the wall behind the projector. Can't even hear the PC now.

If you want to do HDTV over DVI, you need the daughter card. Without it, you can only do analog RGB, VGA, Component.
If you are viewing it through your Radeon's DVI, you are viewing the overlay, which is not HD quality. It's a downsampled version of the real HD.
If your projector supports RGB/VGA, try that output from your MyHD card. It should be a big improvement over the overlay. If your projector supports DVI, it's probably worth buying the daughter card to get the best quality image.
Chancho 01-26-04, 07:48 PM TJI,
Thanks for the reply. No VGA input on the projector...everything but! I did hook up my flat screen monitor thru the MyHD card and the picture looked a lot better than the overlay picture. Enough that I'll buy the daughter card. Thanks again.
Would you have any advice on which capture settings to use for the DTV recordings. Video compression, video capture size, audio compression? Most of the combinations that I've tried cause audio drop outs and video skipping. There are a lot listed. Any idea where I could go to learn more about recording these shows?
richierich 01-26-04, 09:35 PM I've been using the latest beta available from MIT's ftp site and have found that it navigates DVD's well (which is an excellent addition) but I have momentary audio drop-outs at random times. I have read a lot about audio drop-outs on scene changes, but mine are not at scene changes. I can rewind and play over the drop-out point and it does not recur. Is this a known phenomenon (and if so, is there a known fix?)? If not, well, beta software IS beta afterall.
My computer has an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe Rev. 2.00 motherboard with the latest (C1007) firmware. I'm using WinXP Pro for my OS. I have tried FPM 1 and 3 (1 should be correct, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to give 3 a try) with no change in behavior.
Oh, and I did find a repeatable crashing situation. I was watching the Indiana Jones trilogy today (Snow Day!) and decided to go through the THX set-up. As soon as I told it to begin the audio test, MyHD locked up tight. When in full-screen mode (without a second monitor) I was forced to reboot the machine. When not in full-screen mode I could see that it crashed and gave me an error-reporting window. I was able to get out of MyHD in that case without a reboot.
WOW. I've read alot of what you all have to say and alot of it scares the hell out of me. I have no problem tinkering with the computer to make things work correctly but I'm gonna need this thing working in my comp without any hiccups or the WIFE is gonna have my hide. Easy recording. Easy to view DVD's with the upscaling. No sound issues. I've told her the new setup would work. O boy.
Seems like it's always I love the card but have a couple issues with it.
Somebody tell me that everything works fine after a while of messing with it. :)
My needs will mainly be recording OTA HD and watching movies. I have DirecTV and have no desire to get their HD package yet to record.
I'm probably gonna be buying it no matter what with the daughter card for the DVI out to the Sony HS20 that I'm getting.
Gads, hate being the noob. I'll keep reading
TIA

First, You can not record HD from Directv with this card even if you wanted to.
Secondly, I don't have to mess with this card to get it to work right.
I have 2 machines networked together each with their own MYHD card and they simply just work.
Remember, there are a LOT of cards out there and of course people don't make post's in forums like this when they work properly. You only hear from people that are having trouble.
That File Play Mode thing was introduced for HT machines so maybe that is what you are squeamish about?
AllenDB 01-27-04, 10:01 AM Boy did I screw up. The MDP-120 was doing fine recording and playing until I upgraded to version 1.62.2u. Now it hangs XP when I try to play a recording. I have FPM (?) set to one which is suppose to mean run as before. My system is a hand built AMD 2.4, mb Abit KD7 Via KT400-8235 chipset and 1 gb of memory.
I'll scan this thread again for the umteenth time to see if this problem happened to anybody else but in the mean time maybe someone has some input. I'll probably set FPM to zero, auto I think. If that doesn't work I plan on uninstalling everything and reinstall the code from the CD that came with the card.
Oh yeah, it destroyed, lost the play list from the recordings but the tp files are still there. So how do I reincorporate those files into the/a playlist?
Allen D. Bates
Does anyone know if there is a way to load the myHD playlist automatically from a Windows folder? I use a Fusion card to do background recording and I would like the recorded files to show up in the myHD playlist without having to manually add them in.
TPeterson 01-27-04, 10:26 AM Allen--If you had saved a playlist from the file play tab of the configuration menu, you could reload that playlist on the same tab. But I imagine you didn't, so now you'll have to reconstruct your play list by adding the files one-by-one on that tab.
Gregg--No. A "watch folder" feature would be an interesting addition, though, huh? I'd vote for it. :D
I think I have a bad MyHD card. I have tried 2 soundcards with it and both have the same problem whenever I try to play saved HD quality and 5.1 files. I know the files are ok, this was confirmed with the person who made them.
The problem: MyHD will not even play the 5.1 track at times! I have it set to DIGITAL SPIDF and WAVE OUT.
It plays for maybe half a second when I first start the file and will then be mute. If I skip chapters, it will play the start of the next chapter for the half second and then NOTHING.
Im lost on what to try next. I thought it was a REVO problem but the Audigy 2 did the same thing! I have 640 megs RAM, REVO, MyHD 120, 2.5Ghz P4...plenty of HD space.
Should I try a different PCI slot?
ashman5 01-27-04, 09:19 PM This is kinda OT, but does anyone have an overscan test file in the transport steam format to use with MyHD. I don't currently have a DVD drive installed. Or, any pointer on how to make one.

ashman5 01-27-04, 09:30 PM Thanks for the quick response Cliff. I was actually looking for a file that has the overscan marks (5%, 10%, etc) so that I can set the overscan on my Mitsu while using the card. You wouldn't happen to have one like that floating around, would ya?

I've used this crosshatch pattern for almost 3 years to set overscan. Its not rocket science.

AllenDB 01-28-04, 12:39 PM To continue with XP hanging during play back. I had selected two 30 recordings back to back and it froze when I tried to play back the first recording.
Spending more time last night I found out the the names I assigned to the selections had been reversed. The name for the second recording was placed on the files of the first and vice versa. And I could play the first file recorded but not the second. I had been trying to play the first recording but was unknowingly trying to play the second because the names had been reversed.
So last night I recorded a 30 minute program and it played back OK. Then I selected two one hour programs (NCIS & 24) back to back and left. I came back much later and saw a BSOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Christ!
I'll look at what happened more tonight but maybe there is a problem recording 2 back to back programs. I'm going to eventually try the latest beta release before going back to the release on the CD.

disable hyperthreading. then set your fpm=1. you can d/l the fpm reg setting from digital connection. just execute the file after you d/l it.

I have a question related to Chancho's. I'm wondering what minimum CPU specs people have found are needed to record and compress analogue video, for varying codecs.
I tried Divx 5 1-pass at about 500 kbps but it maxxed my Athlon XP 1600+ and the resultant file had drop outs.
Thanks!

Forgive me if this was already reported, but I'm happy to say that the new beta (xx.3.15, xx.3.2) fixed a PBS problem that's been bugging me. I had just posted a message about not being able to play back recorded PBS HD subchannels in the Boston area when I decided to give the new beta a shot - and I was pleasantly surprised to find that they fixed it! :D I thought it was a PBS problem so I wasn't holding out much hope... so tonight I'm a happy guy.

My MDP120 has held up perfectly through the NFL playoffs - my home theater setup has a high def projector and Stewart 110" screen, and all our friends have been coming out of the woodwork to watch the Pats (when did we make so many friends??) - with this relatively new setup I was worried about a glitch at a critical time (Murphy's Law), but it's been great. I am psyched about being able to record the game in high def - if only I had this 2 years ago when I had to watch the Pats win the Superbowl from a hotel in Japan

This version should not be used with the beta2 application.
AllenDB 01-29-04, 10:12 AM Installed the version that Cliff pointed out and so far it seems to have solved the recording problems. Thanks for the help and patience. I can't imagine not recording in HD anymore.

I switched to file play mode 1.
I actually get audio now and for the most part it works fine. However, it still drops out at random time for 15 seconds or and then comes back in full 5.1. Any ideas? It is random, that much I know. Faulty cable maybe, guess I can check that.
Or is it the Revo acting up on me? Set to digital out....
I am watching LOTR: TTT HD.
Also, which setting shoud be used? VOP 60 field/sec?
Thanks!

Cliff Watson 01-30-04, 10:11 PM Gruson,
I've had lost audio several times when the video breaks up. Next time you loose the audio press the audio button on the remote and reselect audio 1 to see it it returns without having to wait.
For VOP you should use the default 30 fields/sec.
Cliff,
I just found my remote again...long story but I do not see the option anywhere in MyHD to turn on the IR sensor, etc....where is it?
Cliff Watson 01-30-04, 11:20 PM Is MyIRC in the startup folder? It has to be running to use the remote.
Yes, it is in the startup folder but when I click on it and open it up, it says disabled....for the life of me I cannot figure out how to turn it "on."
lol
Cliff Watson 01-31-04, 08:41 AM Right click on the MyIRC icon in the system tray and select Config MyIRC.
sedavis76 01-31-04, 05:12 PM Not sure if this was reported yet (I tried to search for it), but every time after playing a DVD, if I stop the DVD, switch to another input, or try to exit the app, the program locks up and I have to terminate the program and restart. Everything else so far seems to working correctly.

Cliff,
I was skeptical that it would look any better, but I've done some comparisons and have to agree that the MyHD output does look better than the output from the HTPC video card (using a software DVD player). I mostly noticed more detail in the upconversion. The output from the video card looked less sharp and detail was harder to pick out. The MyHD card output sometimes looked as good as some HD material, except it was just scaled DVD. I'll certainly be using the MyHD card for all my future DVD viewing.

That has been the drum I have been beating for MONTHS:)
We can all thank Cliff for bugging MIT to fix the navigation issues as that was preventing this from going mainstream.
TT has been retired and my standalone RP91 is now only used for DVD-AUDIO.

Tune to channel 44 and then select the sub channel with the SUB-CH button on the remote or the left/right buttons on the GUI CP.
You could also make sure that sub channels are in the FAV so you can select them direct.
sedavis76 01-31-04, 09:08 PM I'm trying to calibrate the output the MyHD card using the DVI daughter card to my Toshiba 65H83. I've tried using the reference color bars that Cliff provided (MyHD_1080i_Color_Bars.jpg), but they do not appear to show all of the black level gradients that the DVE color bars show (MyHD_480i_Color_Bars.jpg). Just curious if it's supposed to be this way or if something is wrong.
I also noticed that when using the DVE PLUGE pattern, I can not see the faint side bars when using MyHD (not matter how much I turn up the contrast/brightness). I can see them using my Toshiba stand alone player (which uses component outputs). If I can't see the side bars, I'm not sure how to adjust the black level.
Sean
sedavis76 01-31-04, 09:14 PM I've also been adjusting my over/underscan settings using ScanSetup.exe and now have values of:
Overscan=0,32,32,0
Underscan=0,32,32,0
This pretty much centers my picture, although I'm still loosing a lot of picture all around (about 7-8% overscan), but I can live with that for now. The problem is that now all of the overlay text in the DVD menus is off. See the attached .zip file for a couple pictures showing what I mean. It seems to happen on all DVD menus that I've looked at so far.
Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?
Sean
Cliff Watson 01-31-04, 10:26 PM Sean,
I can clearly see why you can't see the PLUGE properly. You have the Brightness setting very low on MyHD or the display.
This is the grayscale part of the RefBars showing the peak white and 25% gray step bars until reaching the black level. Notice that peak white is at 100% (100IRE) and steps at 25% until black patch.
http://www.nabs.net/cwatson53/RGB.jpg
Look closely at your screen shot and you can see that the 25% above black gray bar is almost black, meaning you are driving much of the low light image below black (crushed black).
Notice that the black patch, right of the gray bars, is totally black. In fact inside the black patch is an ATSC PLUGE with 1 above black gray bar and 1 below black bar.
http://www.nabs.net/cwatson53/MyHD_1080i_Color_Bars.jpg
The way to adjust is to set your display brightness to about 50% and increase brightness on MyHD until the PLUGE is visible including the below black bar. From there you can reduce the brightness on MyHD or the display until the whole black patch blends with the below black bar and the gray bar is still visiable.
Here is a MyHD screen shot.

Cliff,
as i don't use the remote (i.e., not even installed), i am left with the left/right buttons on the gui cp or the "sub channel" button...
neither of those options works...it seems as though it is ignoring the other subchannel...i know it is there since i can tune it on my other cards.

sunster 02-01-04, 08:06 AM I have just received the MDP-120 with the DVI daughter card. My system has : P4 2.26 CPU, 1GB Memory, Gigabyte PE1000Pro Motherboard, MSI GeForece FX5600 Video, Windows XP Pro.
The MYHD card conflicts with the AGP FX5600 video card in every PCI slot causing the FX5600 video drives not to start. (exclamation mark in device manager) I removed everything from the system & disabled the onboard devices. I then re-booted & wrote down the resources the FX5600 was trying to use. I installed the MDP-120 & I then changed IRQ's manually & got the same results. I then reloaded the operating system but ended up in the same place. I've even disabled the ACPI under Windows XP since I heard this was a problem, but it didn’t help. I'm using the latest version of the MYHD driver & I have all of the newest updates & drivers - including the latest chipset drives for the MOBO. With the MDP-120 card out, I have no problems with the system. Any assitance is greatly appreciated as I would love to watch the game tonight in HD!
Regards,
Sonny

You do a channel scan and all the channels will show up in the list on the left (eg. 44-1,44-2,44-3)
Then you highlight the ones you want and click the ----> button to put it in the favorities list.
Without this feature, it would drive me nuts. My PBS station has 22-1 thru 22-6 and only 22-4 is in HD.
So, only 22-4 goes in the favorites list.
BTW, use the remote control unless you are using Girder for something else and have tied the Com port up.
If you are using Girder, I have a Girder file that I use to control my second MYHD. It does all the functions that the MYHD remote control does.
Can't figure out why you are not using some kind of remote control. Is that how you get your exercise - getting up and down from the couch to change channels:)

Hey Joe, glad to see someone else is up early :)
My problem seems to be that myHD isn't picking up sub 2 on chan 44 so the scan isn't helping me; that is why i was looking for a way to manually specify the chan/sub to see if I can't force it to tune in...
I'm not presently using girder or the myHD remotes simply b/c I am still in the "shakeout" phase with all these cards and therefore i am still only viewing through my 21" sony computer monitor...my basement remodel, aka building a "home cinema", hasn't yet begun...when i finish that, you can be certain i will use a remote to control the whole setup (hopefully just one :); either that or you can be certain that I'll have the wife get up to change the channel ;)
lemme try rescanning and see what happens but i've already rescanned the channels a number of times and it only picks up that one sub on that channel...i have a couple of other chans that have 2 subs and it picks those up just fine...
BenDover 02-01-04, 09:47 AM rescanning does nothing...why is there no way to just enter the channel/sub via keypad?
jsb_hburg 02-01-04, 09:52 AM Cliff,
Can the MyHD card record a demodulated MPEG2 TS stream from any device over Firewire? Can the MyHD card emulate a DVHS deck? If it doesn't currently, would it be a huge undertaking to effectuate emulation? Right now, I am using my Mac to record HD cable over Firewire and playing it back on my MyHD card in my Dell.
mikemav 02-01-04, 10:56 AM On the advice of several members of this forum, I built my new HTPC using the ASUS P4G8X Deluxe motherboard, which has been very stable with myHD. Thanks for the advice! I am trying to reconfigure the audio so that instead of the myHD coax SPDIF out, I use WAVE and use the mobo digital out. I have that working fine, but unless it is a software setting problem or cable problem (both of which have happened to me before!) I cannot get the analog out from the mobo codec to play along with digital. I have the Avance AC'97 codec settings of the mobo built-in audio set for L/R speaker out from the analog jack I have connected. Before I go through and check all my cables and switcher, can someone verify if this is possible. Is the analog out from the mobo somehow disabled if the mobo digital out is connected? I know several myHD owners are using this mobo, so please let me know if you have had any success with analog and digital out this way, or any other tips I might try. Thanks!
EDIT- okay I did some more experiments and found that the cable is connected fine. When I turn off (close) myHD, the audio from the PC plays fine via analog. It was definitely a myHD configuration issue. So, I found when I change the digital audio output mode in the myHD config to Dolby surround or stereo, both analog and digital from the mobo worked. So I guess the only question know is: is there a way to enable full Dolby Digital out from the myHD and get it to work with the mobo analog and digital at the same time. For HD I am not that converned and Dolby Surround may be fine, but if I start to use myHD for DVD playback, I would really like to pass the bitstream SPDIF out to my main receiver while getting a stereo or Dolby surround out from the analog out for my second room. I guess my audio codec cannot handle SPDIF digital and downconvert it to analog? Any ideas here?
Also, does anyone know where to get the 1080i color bar test pattern referenced in the earlier post? I tried searching this thread and the whole forum but could not find a link.
Enjoy the HD Super Bowl!

Ben,
Tune to channel 44 and then with the keyboard use hot keys "Ctrl+S" to change sub-channels. If the transport stream has more than one sub-channel and/or the TS tables are not broken you should be able to tune them.

Joe,
MyHD does not emulate a DVHS recorder. It can record to HDD from a tape deck or record to tape from HDD, but can't act as DVHS recorder for real time recording.
This sound like a major feature request to be submitted at a later date (after the current bugs get fixed).

Thanks for the help, Cliff. I had just left the MyHD settings at their default (50,50,50) and thought I could just adjust the settings on my TV to compensate. Adjusting the MyHD brightness setting just a little (now set to 56) helped out everything and I can clearly see what you're talking about.
Is there a similar method for adjusting the contrast? I changed the setting in MyHD, but it didn't seem to do very much. On the other hand, changing the brightness control a little drastically made a difference.
Sean
Cliff Watson 02-01-04, 12:00 PM "Is there a similar method for adjusting the contrast?"
Sean,
For contrast setting use the Reverse Gray Ramps (Title12, Chapter 13) in DVE.
The reverse gray ramps will have a black line indicating the safe adjust zones for black and white. I don't recommend using the DVE test pattern for adjusting black level (use the HDTV Ref Bars instead).
The way to set contrast with DVE is to increase contrast (MYHD or Display) until the image under the black line is pure white (100 IRE). If you keep increasing contrast you will notice that pure white will move down the gray scale and if you decrease contrast the gray bars will move outside the black line.
In my opinion the Brightness range between numbered settings on MyHD is excessive and I've requested that MIT reduce the range by at least 50% to allow for finer adjustments.

I certainly agree with that. For now I've adjusted the MyHD brightness control slightly higher than I normally would and used the brightness control on my TV to tweak it down a little since that setting is much finer.
Thanks again for the calibration advice.
Love this forum! I'm addicted. Sorry my first post has to be a question...
I've been running the MDP120 with the beta drivers and software for a little over a week. I'm seeing a stutter that I can't seem to isolate. The audio stays constant, but the video ever so slightly jumps (as if to catch up?).
It's so subtle yet noticible that I begin to look too closely for it. I wonder at times if it's the signal. Right now I'm watching the pregame on CBS and seeing the stutter frequently, but it seems to be absent at other times. The myHD signal is at 100% for this station.
I haven't seen anyone mention this in the forums with respect to the myHD, so I appeal to your wisdom. I've moved to other PCI slots to see if it was IRQ related. I've turned off all unnecessary background services.
I'm running XP Pro on a P4 1.7Ghz, 768MB RAM, Intel 850GB board, Radeon 7000 (Powerstrip timed to Cliff's recommendation from earlier posts), Maxtor drive off a 133 PCI controller, and the MDP120 w/ DVI daughter card to my Samsung HLN437 DLP.
Any advice is much appreciated.

amigodemd 02-01-04, 02:33 PM Hello All...
I have been using the MyHD MCP-120 and DVI daughterboard for about 4 months now. I recently put together an ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe based system with Athlon 2500+ Barton Core and 512Mb Kingston ValueRam 3200+. With the ATI Radeon AIW 9000 Pro connected through DVI to my Hitachi 57F500, I can clock the FSB to 200MHz and lock the AGP frequency to 66Mhz and get a good display of my desktop in all resolutions (i.e., 888x500 (1080i timings), 1192x670 (720p timings), and 1776x1000i (1080i timings)). However, when I connect through the DVI daughterboard the display is corrupted with scan lines at the loading Windows XP logo and I get a full virtual desktop (scrolling) when windows and PS load completely.
I have all the latest drivers including the test drivers, which incidently caused the MyHD pass through to exhibit the same symptoms even with factory default settings in MB bios.
Hoping you can help me out with this and one other question which I will post seperately.
Thanks,
AmigodeMD

Ben,
One easy way to get a specific sub channel into your channel guide is to use TitanTV to schedule a recording. Just pick any program on that sub channel, and when you click on the icon to set the recording, MyIRC will tell you that the channel is not in your list, and you just click OK and it adds the channel.
sedavis76 02-02-04, 08:28 AM Anyone know what the control panel check box "Multi-mode on Antenna" does?

i was wondering the same thing just yesterday when i was trying to figure out another problem i've suddenly started experiencing.
i have made no changes to my setup or to my computer (other than unplugging an external usb hard drive to u/g it from a 40 to a 200, only to find out that the onboard ata controller must not be able to address anything more than a 130gb drive :( ... damn maxtor!! ... but i digress).
anyhow, my newest problem is that i have lost audio on one of my pbs stations...the sd subchannel is fine but the hd sub has lost audio; video is still fine...this may be right after i tried pressing ctrl-s to change sub channels on another channel as suggested by cliff...any ideas cliff? ( i hope to cure my untunable subchan by using titantv as suggested by another clever/observant user...nice feature of myHD as well :) )
BenD, did you check if there's a bios update for your mobo to support drives>137GB?

didn't mean to get off topic but: my issue isn't related to my mobo, or its bios, but instead with the ata->usb controller within the external drive enclosure. there must be some firmware/bios limitation within the external drive enclosure's controller. it is the maxtor 3000le model which initially only came in 40 or 120gb versions. short of being able to somehow u/g the firmware/bios of the drive enclosure i would have to get a new controller for the enclosure, if it is even available (the newer 5000 series maxtor external drives should have the appropriate controller; i have an email into maxtor's tech support). only other option would be to swap out a 120gb drive i have in one of my computers with the 200gb drive i was hoping to house within the enclosure and live with 80gb less external storage space than i had been hoping for...*sigh*
had a feeling you would have covered the obvious ;)
BenDover 02-03-04, 10:42 AM ok, using the guide i am able to tune to the appropriate channel/subchannel (quirky implementation; seems like 2 or 3 windows open up, no content in the windows, to change the channel on the myHD); also, if i select record for a channel/sub that is not in my channel list it notes that and gives me the option of adding it to the list.
observation: if clicking on something in titantv's guide executes a script/command to enter the appropriate channel/sub and this apparently works, there must be some way for me to input the correct chan/sub? (similarly for the adding the missing chan/sub)
problem: using the guide to schedule a recording, thereby adding any missing chans/subs, only appears to work for one chan/sub, even though it "appears" to recognize that the chan/sub are not yet in the list; i.e., if 44.1 is already in the list and i use the guide to schedule a recording of something on 44.2, the app recognizes that 44.2 is not in my chan list and offers to add it, however, after clicking ok to the dialog offering to add the chan/sub, it doesn't actually add the new chan/sub, only the old 44.1 remains. i can delete 44.1 and repeat the process and then 44.2 is indeed added, but then i can't add 44.1 back...
cliff, i can neither enter the chan/sub directly, use the left/right arrows on the gui nor use the kb ctrl-s combo to change subs, does anyone else have this behavior?
p.s. my audio is back on my pbs channel, they must have had broadcast problems...
TPeterson 02-03-04, 06:24 PM Ben--
Where the heck are you and what station is that "44.1"? AFAIK, now that KQED is back in the pink, other folks aren't seeing the stuff you describe. (But I don't receive D45 KBHK well enough to tune "44.1", which would be its first virtual channel)
miimura 02-03-04, 07:22 PM KBHK (like KCSM) doesn't use the 44 virtual since they're probably going to abandon the 44 transmitter when the analog gets shut off. They show up in MyHD as 45.1. Since they started broadcasting Enterprise HD, they're also upconverting to 1080i 24/7 instead of trying to change resolution on the fly. They used to broadcast 480i only.
Ben is clearly not in the Bay Area.

problem: using the guide to schedule a recording, thereby adding any missing chans/subs, only appears to work for one chan/sub, even though it "appears" to recognize that the chan/sub are not yet in the list; i.e., if 44.1 is already in the list and i use the guide to schedule a recording of something on 44.2, the app recognizes that 44.2 is not in my chan list and offers to add it, however, after clicking ok to the dialog offering to add the chan/sub, it doesn't actually add the new chan/sub, only the old 44.1 remains. i can delete 44.1 and repeat the process and then 44.2 is indeed added, but then i can't add 44.1 back...
cliff, i can neither enter the chan/sub directly, use the left/right arrows on the gui nor use the kb ctrl-s combo to change subs, does anyone else have this behavior?
p.s. my audio is back on my pbs channel, they must have had broadcast problems...

yes, i do have virtual chan mode enabled; will have to disable tonight when i get home to see if that affects myhd's behavior...thanks
Before you do that, try an Auto Scan when Virtual Channel Mode is enabled. Subchannels should show up in your channel list now.
If an Auto Scan is done when Virtual Channel Mode is disabled, the subchannels don't show up. If it is subsequently enabled without a rescan, the subchannels still don't show up and control-S and the sub-ch button on the remote are inactive (for live broadcasts).
At least that's the way it works for me.

AllenDB 02-04-04, 10:30 AM Last night CBS had everything all screwed up. Shortly after 9 I accidently saw that NCIS had been shifted from 8 to 9. I ran into the office and tried to simply schedule a recording from now for 1 hour. It kept saying the start time had already passed. No matter what I did the start time had already passed.
How can one tell MYHD to simply record from the present for x amount of time on the schedule screen?

Allen,
Tune to the channel you want, and press the record button (on the remote (or in the MyHD window) a couple of times. After the 2nd press, you will see a time come up (15 mins. maybe? don't recall exact) and each time you press the time will increase (15 mins., 30 mins., 60 mins.).

Nick
AllenDB 02-04-04, 12:55 PM Cool!!!! Can't wait to get home and try it.
Thank you. I read the manual front to back but I guess it all didn't stick the first time.
Allen
Cliff Watson 02-04-04, 01:45 PM When pressing the record button (remote or control panel) the record time duration is as follows.
1st Press = Infinity
2nd Press = 10 minutes
3rd Press = 30 minutes
4th Press = 60 minutes
5th Press = 90 minutes
6th Press = 120 minutes
7th Press = 180 minutes
8th Press = Return to Infinity
Cliff, I had a problem today with my install, When launching the MyHD app, it would go into HD mode (I have it looped back via VGA right now) and would not allow me to exit HD mode. I ended up uninstalling/reinstalling the latest beta APP and now it works. No clue why it hung up and put itself into HD mode on startup without me checking the box to do so. All is fine now though...
Jim
Cliff Watson 02-04-04, 10:01 PM Jim,
I had the same problem just the other day.
I was testing dual monitor RGB mode and after going back to loopback DVI mode I unchecked dual monitor and forgot to also uncheck start in HD mode. When dual monitor mode is selected the start in HD mode gets checked and grayed out.

I did not, I will check and get back to you. Incidently, I am back to the stable drivers from digital connection.
OK. Maybe the FOX/UPN (WNTW/WWOR?) station is doing something, shall we say, creative.
While in virtual channel mode, do "D 05-1" and "D 09-1" show up in your channel list (assuming WNYW and WWOR are the broadcasters in question)?
Please forgive me for narrowing down the possibilities, even if they are obvious.

Update on virtual desktop problem when overclocking 2500+ on ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe MB to 200 MHZ FSB with AGP locked to 66MHz.
I enabled Digital Flat Panel Output on the MyHD application, but I still have the same results-I get a virtual desktop. However, I discovered something interesting...If I open the MyHD application once the computer is completed booting and the virtual desktop is displayed on screen, then a good desktop appears. This is a workaround but why does the virtual desktop happen in the first place. Like I said in my original post, the PC is stable with these timings...it works great with my Hitachi RPTV hooked directly up to the Radeon DVI without going through the MyHD Card, but when passing through the MyHd I get this virtual desktop when overclocking.
Thanks,

amigodemd 02-05-04, 08:53 AM I noticed that AccessTV now has the ability to work as a true Tivo like DVR for HDTV. Does the MyHD card have this potential? I am talking about the functions of Pause and rewind live tv..which is what most people refer to as time shifting. Right now it only can do VCR like functions.
Thanks,
I just put in my dvi daughterboard last night and was looking forward to seeing a beautiful picture. Well after plugging it in the picture was great... what I could see of it. I have read the posts about overscan and tried using the utility to adjust. So you know how bad it is think of a 4:3 show on a 16:9 screen, then move it all the way to the right until the picture is at the edge of the screen.
The display looks find in 1368 by 768 only when using MYHD. Could this be a problem with the beta drivers or do I need to put in a very high number on the scansetup utility?

Did you enable digital flat panel after installing the DVI card?
Yes, I enabled it. First I forgot and had no picture. And I had no overlay window when I tried to open MYHD. So I had to reconnect the vga and enable it.
Cliff Watson 02-05-04, 11:07 AM "The display looks find in 1368 by 768 only when using MYHD."
What does that mean? Are you saying that MyHD video output is good but your other problem is with the desktop or the problem is with DVI output and analog RGB from MyHD is OK?
Oh I see I missed typed. Need more caffienne.
The HS10 has a good picture in 1368 by 768 using either the vga or dvi connection. Also the MYHD had no problems with overscan or shifting when using component or RGB.
When using the DVI connection from the MYHD to the projector the image is shifted to the right about 25 to 30%. (If you have a 4:3 image with black on left and right, you don't see the black bar on the right because it is shifted that far.) I did try different scenarios with the aspect and zoom and full settings. But no luck.
Cliff Watson 02-05-04, 11:30 AM What does the HS10 look like over DVI if you send it 1080i or 720p from MyHD?
The picture looks fine except for being shifted to the righ about 25%. Last night while watching The Tonight Show the NBC bug was barely visible in the lower right hand corner.

Just to be sure, you are talking about 1080i and 720p output from MyHD, right?
Does your projector have a center adjustment for the DVI input.
Yes Cliff, I am talking about 1080I and 720P. I have the Sony HS10 and I looked for a center adjustment but didn't see one. The pc desktop is centered.
thanks for any help you can give
Well when I got home tonight I tried uninstalling the application and driver. no good. Instead of using the scansetup to adjust underscan I tried using the overscan on the lef the non beta driverstt. I got it a little better but not much. It appears that 32 is about the highest I could put in on the left to pull the right side.
I think I might try the non beta drivers and see if the beta has something to do with this.

Are you using PC Mode or Video Mode on you projector for the 1080i and 720p output from MyHD.
I believe video mode properly supports HDTV resolutions on the Sony HS10.
I am using the video rgb mode.

In PC mode it is squished to about half a screen in what is probably the 1024 by 768 settings.
I just installed the drivers and app from the cd. Same problem. I tried 3 different resolutions.
on the 480P setting it was the opposite of the 1080I. It was on the far left.
Switched to 720P and more to the right but not quite as much as the 1080I.
I just reran scansetup and it had the 40 values in it still that I put. I switched back to an 8 for left overscan and right underscan. didn't make any difference.
Any chance this could be the dvi card? It does pass through correctly from my ati 9600xt.
mikemav 02-07-04, 01:10 PM I am trying to get DVD Lobby/ Main Lobby Server to control myHD as my DVD player of choice. The great folks at Cinemar and their contributors have written several MLServer "plug-ins" for popular HTPC and automation software to directly control it. These include Theatertek and Zoom Player for DVD playback. I prefer the performance of myHD for playing my ripped DVDs over these softeware DVD players. The question is, how to I get them the necessary info to control the myHD software?(especially the beta version w/ DVD navigation, and the upcoming new official release when available).....I see from the 1.61 manual there are some command line options available, but I am new to command line and wanted to make sure there are not more options available I can tell them about. For instance, with Theatertek, there is a plug-in for MLserver that allows for the on-screen DVD lobby software "remote" to control the Theatertek transport controls. What would be the best approach to do this with myHD? I do not want to have to use girder to send out IR to the myIRC when all I really need is one software program to control another. Another option may be to see if DVD Lobby/ Main Lobby can send keystrokes. This may work well since there seems to be almost full control over the myHD app with the keyboard. I believe the Lobby suite can do that; I will look into it. In the meantime, a list of full command line options (if the manual does not cover them all) or any other hints about myHD control would be most appreciated. Thanks

Ok. After relinstalling the drivers and software and even moving to a different pci slot I think it is the dvi cable that is keeping me from having a good picture. I bought a 15 ft dvi-d cable from Microcenter. (I also tried a a 6 foot dvi-d from Microcenter that a friend had. )
When watching a High def source and having the output from the dvi set at 720 by 480P the picture is fine. Nice and centered. When I switch to 720P it moves to the right. Switching to 1080I it moves to the right even more. So even though the cable is supposed to hand 1080I it doesn't seem to want to do it right.
So if there is anyone in the Dallas area who has a Sony HS-10 that would let me verify this I would be grateful. Outside of that, any good sources to get a 15 to 20 ft dvi-d cable that won't cost me an arm and a leg?
I am using the video gbr on the hs-10. trying the computer selection is even worse. I do think it is odd that I CAN display 1386 by 768 in pc mode without any problems from my 9600Xt. I even switched the resolution to 720P using Power Strip and had no problems displaying on the video gbr.
So while typing this I am wondering if maybe it is not the cable and could be the daughter board. Since it is passing through fine but when actually in use for HD viewing it is messed up.
Now I think I am more confused.
Anyone with answers would be great?
Thanks,
Johnny

Oh, you want an answer? :D
It allows both cable and OTA frequencies to be scanned. This allows you to merge the relatively low frequency OTA signals with the relatively high-frequency cable signals and use just one input.
Note that this doesn't give MyHD the ability to deal with cable HD modulation (64QAM or 265QAM). It only allows you to get 8-VSB over cable frequencies (rare in the US).

Does that mean it should be unchecked if I'm only tuning 8VSB OTA channels? Does it do anything bad if I leave it checked and I'm not using 8VSB over cable?
kdmorse 02-08-04, 06:29 PM Quick Question:
Here I am twiddling with my antenna setup, little to the left, little to the right, up, down. But every time I walk away from the PC (on which I watch the output), to the antenna, MyHD turns off the onscreen signal meter! I walk back, press Ctrl-Enter, walk to the antenna, move it a few times, and have to walk back to the PC to turn the OSD back on.
Is there any way to turn it on and *leave* it on for times like this??
(Running latest beta from the FTP site, but had the same problem with the code on the CD)
Thanks,
-Ken
Watch it on the Windows desktop, with the control panel displayed. There's a part on the upper left of the control panel that shows strength (although you might have to click it to get it to show a number--I'm not sure).
Well after much diliberation I think my problem is the dvi daughterboard. Last night I was unable to get back into windows after a reboot or from standby. I wasn't sure if it was my 9600xt or the dvi daughterboard. After reinstalling XP and MYHD I was able to tell it is the daughterboard. I would not be able to get my screen back without turning on MYHD first. I had a similar problem with the passthrough for the vga connection. It would have odd lines that would go across the screen and would dissappear once MYHD was started.
Bypassing the pass through for both the vga and dvi has solved my boot problems. I was also able to get 1080i to display with MYHD correctly through the dvi but any other resolution is messed up. So I reckon I will be returning the dvi daughterboard:(

Hi Cliff:
an idea for MyIRC:
How about a "bypass scheduled recording" checkbox in the screen when you double-click on the MyIRC system tray icon? Useful for when upcoming scheduled recording are pre-empted. Currently, I either (1) disable MyIRC in the system tray, which turns off remote control, or (2) futz with the schedules in the config screen, which opens the possibility of forgetting to redo it at a later date (been there done that!).
I'd like to see a checkbox along the lines of:
<_>Bypass _____ scheduled recording(s)
with a dropdown box with selections like:
__next
__next 2
__next 3
Useful when you have back to back events that are pre-empted, example: tonights Alias & The Practice, both bumped by a movie.
Just my 2 cents! TIA

It can still cause a problem if you forget to fix it after it records, but you have a week to make the change back to "repeating" and a week after that to re-create the reservation, so it's not too bad.

I have a similar albeit different problem with mine. I use the DVI Daughterboard and pass through DVI from my Radeon 9000 Pro to my RPTV. When the computer first boots, I have to open MyHD to stop the virtual desktop. I can then Close the app and desktop looks fine. If I hook the Radeon directly to the RPTV, I don't have this problem, but I only have one DVI port on my RPTV so I have to use pass-through. I wonder what could be causing this to occur. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,

Your problem sounds similar to something a few folks have experienced. When you say you have to stop the virtual desktop, is that because the screen is shifted, or some how out of sync? In my case, my TV refuses to display the signal its getting.
Does everything look fine through the bios boot and then get funky when the booting windows screen comes up? Does your mobo have the Nforce2 chipset?
If yes, would you mind disabling or uninstalling the MDP100 driver and reboot. I suspect you will not have the problem.
jb
I reinstalled over weekend and was on the vga port from video card. Installed fine. (yes I have the a7n8x-deluxe mobo. When I installed the video drivers from the cd .. after reboot lost my display once it got to splash screen. switched over to dvi which was going through the pass through and my display was fine. This continued to be ok until I installed the myhd drivers. Then I lost my dvi on boot ( get out of frequency) start the my hd app and get desktop back. I can't remember if this was from the original drivers that came with the myhd or the beta.
Last night It started a record just fine (currently not using pass through)
switched to dvi to watch full resolution of CSI:Miami and no dvi.
Had to reboot and was then able to get signal.
I am getting a replacement dvi daughterboard this week so will know for sure what might be the culprit. ( As I had extreme overscan on right side that was difficult to adjust.)

AllenDB 02-10-04, 01:34 PM When you solve the overscan problem using scansetup please let me/us know. I've asked before on how to use scansetup to control overscan but I guess there is no direct answer. I don't play DVDs or display the PC on my monitor, I just record and playback a lot of OTA HDTV. But as I said before I also get overscan and don't see the complete picture.

For me, it works to start Sage as a service for some reason. Once sage launches, the screen comes up fine. For a while I just had MyHD in the startup folder, but then, as of beta2, I had to quit MyHD to get any picture - then I discovered Sage worked.
My TV blocks the bad sync. For you, I'd want to verify that the bad sync wasn't damaging my display. I've seen warnings about display damage from using the wrong refresh rate but I don't know if thats a myth and I don't know why the signal is out of sync in our case.
Now maybe jgibo1 will demonstrate the problem is the daughterboard in which case we'll want replacement boards. Otherwise the solution must come from the driver developers in my opinion.
For some reason Cliff wont pass on our problem reports to the developers and will encourage you to contact your mobo manufacturer and ask them why the chipset doesn't support the MyHD card. This, despite the fact that at one point this problem did not exist on our chipset and was introduced in a particular driver version that is documented in this forum. But call Asus. I suspect they will just refer you to Nvidia - then hang up and laugh at you.
If display damage from bad sync poses a realistic problem and no other solution pans out, then you'll have to retire your AMD system in favor of a pentium system on an Intel chipset.
pretty f'ing ridiculous, I guess will have to hope the daughter card is to blame.
