Been working pretty much non-stop (9am-9pm) days since Friday.

I can very seriously understand why some theaters have been under construction for weeks, months, and even years....

First off, I'd like to THANK everyone here in this forum. I have gotten so much information and ideas from this forum plus the people are extremely nice in answering any questions.

Curious, did you move those pipes or did you hire? If hire, what did you pay? I thought about moving one, but the guy said it would be pretty pricey, so i worked around it.

My father and myself moved the pipe. Didn't really want to mess with it, but really didn't want to lose all that ceiling height either.

I had a few plumbers out for estimates. :0

Where I moved it, they quoted around ~$800-$1000.

They all wanted to move it from a place further down so they didn't have to deal with much, just turn and go. They still wanted $400-$600.

The other option would have been to make a soffit for the pipes, and a matching dummy soffit on the other side. Not a criticizm; kudos for making the effort to move them.

Good idea moving the pipe. I got lucky, while at chemo I was talking to one of the nurses and her husband is a plumber. He quoted me $500 to take care of some work. My old plumber quoted $1000. When he was done with the job he charged me only $325. Asked him twice how much, I just couldn't believe it. The job was a bit easier than he thought at first and he just charged for his and his helpers time. Two people, four hours - $325 - on Long Island - BARGAIN!

I have a lot of plumbing to do - redo 1 bathroom, move washer/dryer(gas) and put in a bathroom in the basement for the theater. Guess who gets the work.

I noticed in your picture that you only put sand in the right front of the stage. I assume that's where your going to put your sub? Have you tested the stage with the sub to test vibrations?

I'd like to do the same. I was dreading lugging 1000lb(?) of sand to fill all the cavities in the stage.

Please keep posting, your ahead of me in construction. I'm just putting in the subfloor (Dricore) now.

I love learning from others rather than waste time and material.

Thanks for all the compliments, was busy working today. Planned on taking a break, but pulled electrical and speaker wire along with finishing up the equipment rack. More pictures added to original thread.

Here are some replies.....

Larry Fine: Yeah, the soffit was an idea. I am actually still going to have to make one to hide the rest of the pipe I didn't relocate (couldn't without major changes) and the HVAC run. Not sure if I'm going to make a dumby soffit for the other side or not to balance it all out, as that is where my seating riser will be under. Ceiling height is only 7'9" or so already.

MikeA: Yeah, sand on the right corner of the stage is where the sub will go. The entire rest of the stage has insulation stuffed in it. Stage was built with screws & liquid nails adhesive. Took about four 50lb bags to do just those little sections with sand.

DeaconDan: 24' L x 14'5" W x 7'9" H (rough dimensions) and yes I will have my equipment facing into the room on the one side wall without the windows. The room the back of equipment will be facing into is a planned unfinished storage area room where all the mechanicals (HVAC/water heater/etc) are.

I am amzed how much you accomplished in a long weekend (is that right??). I too started this weekend, and barely framed two walls, experince, experince, experince. I look your front wall, what do you plan to do with the two angle walls in the corners? place speakers there? curtains?

MikeA: so far I love the Sony HS20. Can't say I've ran it much, and in no where near ideal conditions... I've played a few DVDs, watched some Directv, and played a little PS2. No complaints as of yet.

Omudrick: yeah, got all that up there accomplished in about 4-5 days of continuous work. My father is really good with all trades (electrical, wood, etc) and we are making good progress. The front two walls that are angled will hold speakers and a subwoofer, which will be covered with acoustically transparent fabric.

wow, what a great room so far. i am just in the process of finishing mine and am about 1/2 way through framing the exterior walls. i have about 1,300 sq/ft to finish in all. i like the stage you have set up and it has given me a few ideas for my screen area. i have a pull down at the moment so i plan to recess it in behind a false wall that drops about 16" from the ceiling. i do like the idea of the stage and also the insulation/sand in the floor to minimize sound travelling upstairs.

thanks for the ideas and i plan to track your progress. i am new to the ht builder forum.....are there any good pics of other ht designs to get more ideas??

3/30/04 Update

Since I'm finishing my entire basement (well 75% of it) as I work on home-theater, I have to work on projects for both rooms.

Built my sofitt for the entire lenght of the rooms. The HVAC, propane pipe, copper water lines, sewer white PVC pipe and what not run under the joists down the entire length of the hometheater room and the living/rec/multi-purpose room.

Takes a lot of time to make them nice and straight and all aligned. Lots of checks and level use. Thank god for chaulk lines and laser levels. Spending time here will hopefully make the drywall go easy.

Well, not my actual theater room specific work going on still.....

Went out and bought myself a Channel Plus MDS-6 Whole-House Audio system. It is a six-source six-zone system. Takes a lot of time to wire for this, especially when your house (upstairs) is finished. Installed speakers (in-walls) in the 1.)kitchen/breakfast 2.)master bed 3.)master bath 4.)garage 5.)basement rec room and (in-ceilings) 6.)front porch patio

Tons of drywall cutting with the Craftsman rotozip saw. No mistakes, and no holes drilled into any floors or areas where the drill wasn't supposed to go.

Also, while doing this, I installed some RG6(QS) and CAT5e runs to different rooms and terminated them in LEVITON quickplates with snap in terminals and dropped all runs at the back of the equipment rack. Also ran the RG6 up to the attic and mounted the Channel Plus (http://www.channelmaster.com/images/4248.jpg) antenna. Also had to run a set of wires to the doorbell to the equipment rack for the MDS-6, as it can ring the doorbell over the speakers.

All said and done with wire I think:
~500-750' of 14/2 (basement wiring)

~750-1000' of 12ga Carol In-Wall Speaker Wiring (theater room and whole house audio system)

~75' of doorbell wire

~500' of CAT5e 350mhz Enhanced Cable

~500' of Carol RG6 Quad-Shield

along with some 12/2 and 14/3 wire also in the basement....

We added it up, something like 3000 feet of wire/cable pulled these last few weeks.

Most importantly I would like to THANK my father for all his help on this project!

DaveInBerlin: apologize for the late reply, but the shelving is MDF board from Lowes. Will need painted after all is said and done. Actually the entire equipment rack is white MDF. The sides already had 3 sets of holes drilled up the entire height too. Made it nice.

Some more updates (after a lot of downtime) coming soon. Insulation going in walls, and drywall is going up in a few days.

adaseng: the 12ga CAROL is from Parts Express (http://www.partsexpress.com/) which just happens to be 15min from my house, which makes it nice. As far as linacoustic, at first I was going to go thru the whole-nine yards with the furring strips and linacoustic (bottom half wall) and batting (top half wall), but I've decided to just go with GOM, fabric, carpet, or whatever I choose directly over the drywall. All the interior walls and ceilings are heavily insulated though.

I think taping/mudding has started to overcome my life. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably hire this out. First time my father and I have ever really messed with finishing, and we're both pretty picky. Should be done here soon and on to the next step.

Just thought I would caution you on 1 problem I see happening to you in this Great room you are making.
Your system return & the start of your supply should be redone.
It should be internaly insulated and have about 4 90's to stop sound travel or when you turn your theater on the sound IS going to travel though you entire house via the duct work.

Just wanted to say, I'm happy with how my theater came out. It isn't up the to the quality of some of the gorgeous theaters here, but for my first go around, I'm happy!

A HUGE thanks goes out to my father, who helped in every aspect of building this room. His general knowledge in all aspects of construction helped out tremendously!!

My father and myself did every part of the build, minus the textured ceiling. We did plumbing (moving line), framing, electrical, drywall, drywall finishing, carpet, paint, wire running, screen building, GOM work, molding, curtains, etc, etc! Basically EVERYTHING.

All that's really left to do is purchase some updated equipment including a new a/v receiver and DVD player. Also, I have the HUGE task of organizing my wiring closet nicely. Tons of wires in there with the whole-house audio, network, etc. Should be fun.

I've been thinking of a 3 seater too.

3 seater front row. I really wanted to jam four Berkline 090s in that front row, but it would have made it just a bit too snug to the side walls/columns.
Hard to make out from the pictures, back there are 4 seats in the back too. So, it is actually a 7 seater. :)


Any thoughts about the rack?

Anything specific? I like the rack. Was cool to build it into the wall. The back faces a huge unfinished room in the basement and is easily accessible. Plus if you open the closet door on the back, there is a ton of space for the heat to go into that room. Shelves and side pieces with shelf holes were pre-made white MDF pieces from LOWES. Save a lot of time.


How's the sound?

Sounds great to me!! The Ascend Acoustic speakers are really a super "bang for the buck" setup. You get a lot for what you pay. I'm using a majorly outdated 5.1 receiver right now, can't even take advantage of my 7.1 setup as of now.

In the picture below, I can't tell if you left the speaker accessible or not. Did you make a removable cover for the speaker, or did you just cover the entire upper column with GOM?

The entire upper column was covered in black GOM.

The column in that picture has the upper portion of the MDF painted black, so the brown didn't show through the black GOM.

Great looking room was wondering what type clue did you use for the black GOM.

Where's the wet bar and popcorn machine?? :)

Everything looks great and should be tons of good times for your family. Do you have pictures of the finished rec room?

Great job! Very classy looking. couple of questions: 1. did you put insulation only in the walls covered by 1/2" sheetrock? 2. What is the fabric used on the walls?, 3. where did you get the fabric? Thanks.
