Yeah, that's a great solution, unless you have a few hundred SVCD discs and you want to let your friend borrow some and they won't play, that'd be quite a bit of time/effort/discs, don't you think?

View Full Version : Very Fresh Firmware List for Panasonic! (RP91 and XP unit discoveries!!) glassvial 06-01-04, 12:07 PM Yeah, that's a great solution, unless you have a few hundred SVCD discs and you want to let your friend borrow some and they won't play, that'd be quite a bit of time/effort/discs, don't you think? DrJoe 06-01-04, 12:14 PM glassvial, I never said it was a solution for you. For someone burning home videos, one might want to consider it (I did - but decided it was too much work). For existing SVCD's it wouldn't work. I was just throwing that out for the "specs" list Mr Biggles made. Was your sarcasm really necessary? Joe glassvial 06-01-04, 07:47 PM Was just making a point :) DrJoe 06-02-04, 07:09 AM I'd suggest your friend buy an Apex for under $55 at Walmart for viewing SVCD's. Or he could get a cyberhome player for $40 at Samsclub. I did the same (bought a cheap second player) for watching region 2 PAL disks. Joe Kitty Burgers 06-02-04, 10:04 AM You would think that in this day and age we wouldn't have to resort to buying cheap players just to gain playback options for PAL or other format types. I don't understand why the big brand-name manufacturers don't just include these options on their decks to begin with... gosh, it shouldn't be such an issue these days. All thses bloody compatibility issues will start all over again when the HS units finally start to appear on the retail shelves. Oh well. what are y' gonna do ... RS glassvial 06-02-04, 02:29 PM Yeah that's what I suggested he do. It's really sad that a $30-40 DVD player can do more than a $99-$150 DVD player. And yes you can go on and on about PQ and etc. but that's all irrelevant if you can't play the disc in the first place, now isn't it?? :) DrJoe 06-02-04, 04:59 PM Originally posted by glassvial Yeah that's what I suggested he do. And yes you can go on and on about PQ and etc. but that's all irrelevant if you can't play the disc in the first place, now isn't it?? :) Well, "more" is in the eyes of the beholder, I guess. I was disappointed to find out that my cheap player, which also has a karaoke function (advertised in big letters on the box), doesn't play CD+G (this is the most common karaoke format). I purchased this player because it does what I want (region 2, PAL), and it could act as a karaoke machine for my stepdaghter. Oh well. There always seems to be a missing format. Make sure you throw in the various audio formats to the mix too(CD, MP3, SACD, DVD Audio). Oh yeah, then there are the players that do Kodak Picture discs or jpeg slideshows. Then there is progressive video scaling (my TV set "locks" in 16:9 for a 480p input signal -- making a player with the scaling ability of the RP91 necessary for viewing letterboxed DVD's in progressive format). The perfect player would do all of the above (with good PQ!): play CD's, MP3's (and Windows Media!), SACD's, DVD-A's, VCD's, SVCD's, CD+G's, DVD's, Kodak Picture Discs, Jpeg Slide Shows, convert Pal to Ntsc, play region free, have a microphone input for karaoke, have optical and coaxial digital audio outputs as well as a discrete 7.1 anlaog output, and have the ability to scale progressive video. Did I miss anything? There are so many functions that DVD players can perform, that I don't know if the perfect player exists anywhere. So instead, you have to pick the best player for your needs, and make allowances for its limitations. Joe Ricker 06-02-04, 05:47 PM DrJoe, You could also add others like OGG decoding, DTS decoding, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW support, and on, and on. ;-) afis 06-02-04, 06:02 PM Thanks to all the great contributions and work of the people on this thread I updated perfectly the firmware for a RP82. What is surprising is that prior to that I was suffering major audio dropouts, at times when audio got loud (tracking? alignment?) and some occasional pixelation. While looking for solutions, and possible replacement, VOILA the firmware change has left the unit perfect. Did the firmware upgrade change some of the tilt. alighnment etc settings, if such can be changed that is? All I know is there has been a dramatic correction. Sango 06-02-04, 08:07 PM Hi afis: Most likely is that the firmware must of optimized the optical pick up to read certain disc surface's subtrates better. This doesn't actaully change any alignment or tilts or anything. This would require you to get the DVD Test Disc and a 5/64 hex wrench to adjust the settings if you really want to perform a true calibration. Since I have these at home, I can easily calibrate my unit when ever I change a spindle or optical pick up to ensure my units are in top running condition. pixel8 06-03-04, 12:17 AM Hi Sango, Seeing you have a R3 RP82 player (region free), can you tell me how you upgraded it and retain its region free functionality? Did you have to contact the mod dealer? I too have the same player as yours. Didn't see any feedback from you about the improvements from the upgrades .... are there any? Sango 06-03-04, 12:41 AM Hi Pixel: I actaully did mention the improvments in this thread for sure. Basically it's similar to what other people have accounted for so you don't need to look for my exact post which is somewhere in here. Reguaring the R3 which I already mentioned it as well. This is when I upgraded originally to the lastest and lost the capabilities. The solution is to get the modified one from the mod dealer - I had to mail a copy of it because they didn't have the original of the latest. Once they obtained it, they immediately made the modified one for me which I automatically gained back all capabilities. Modified units in general are different because it's modified and they use modified firmware. Flashing it with originally will lose the capabilties because the firmware is written to stock and the unit can no longer talk or knows about the existance of mod chip. The modified one allows this to happen, which is why you can have the capabilities. Sango == I have 4 RP82s(one being the R3 modified, the rest stock) and 2 RP56s!! pixel8 06-03-04, 12:59 AM Originally posted by Sango I actaully did mention the improvments in this thread for sure. Yes, I have been reading some feedback about 'improvements' from others eg. picture quality improved, no more audio dropouts, better layer changes but then again, there was also mention that the improvements were only perceived or psychological. I'm more curious from your point of view considering you have 4 RP82s to compare side by side. If the above were really actual improvements, I don't see why we need to spend hard-earned money on newer hardwares when we could look towards newer software in the future. I thought firmwares are related to bug fixes or menu tweaks. Sango 06-03-04, 01:42 AM Hi Pixel: There improvements are actual - unfournately Panasonic doesn't document so this is how we have to find out. When comparing the players side by side with the previous firmware and current one, I did notice the same differences and they were consistant. The hardware is also important as well(but it can only do so much) and the same goes for the firmware to tell the hardware what to do. Were hoping that when the DVD-S97 which supposingly has the FLI2310 can overtake the RP82/Denon 1600/XP30 and 50s - Then most likely it will be worth purchasing. pixel8 06-03-04, 04:36 AM Originally posted by Sango There improvements are actual - unfournately Panasonic doesn't document so this is how we have to find out. When comparing the players side by side with the previous firmware and current one, I did notice the same differences and they were consistant. Could the differences be due to new default menu settings eg. sharpness, black levels, etc.? Bumped into this link that sells firmware cd for 12 pounds .... http://www.kelkoo.nl/b/a/ss_Rp-u200.html GreenMtnGringo 06-03-04, 05:40 PM Thanks to Sango et al., I upgraded my XP50 firmware from v266 to v302. While my current television is probably inadequate to reveal subtle visual differences between firmware versions, I have a somewhat high-end two-channel audio system and I immediately noticed an improvement in audio quality on DVD-V concert discs. (I use a dedicated CD/SACD player for CDs.) The bass sounds deeper, less muddy and more tuneful, and the highs are smoother and less “splashy.” I wonder if anyone else noticed an audio improvement after upgrading? On a related note, I am interested in making my Region 1 XP50 region-free. I recently acquired a Region 2 DVD special edition of a favorite movie and I’d love to play it on my XP50. I know this isn’t a region-hack thread, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Omen 06-03-04, 06:18 PM GreenMtnGringo, I don't think there is a region-free hack for the XP50. I checked over at www.videohelp.com, but they don't list any hacks for that player. The only things I've seen on the web are places that sell region-free XP50's. Sango 06-03-04, 07:34 PM Pixel8: It seems apparent you're asking questions without considering that this would of been brought up a long time ago. Since so many people updated it and notice if there was a change, wouldn't they have brought this up(this will also include myself since I updated first)? --- GreenMtnGringo: You have to get a mod kit to modify to region free. glassvial 06-03-04, 07:37 PM I don't know of any DVD players that play CD+G. I tried following some old CD+G links on getting it working on a DVD player (CDG2SVCD, perhaps?) but came up empty. And yes I don't think there is any such thing as a "perfect" play-all player that can do every single format. I guess my broad definition would be DVD-/+R, (S)VCD, MP3, audio cd, and progressive scan. Outside of that, not a lot of the other mentioned features are anything I get excited over. Not to point fingers at brand names, but I still read stories of new Toshiba's (avg street price $89 or so?) that can't do things like SVCD, whereas a cheapie $40 all-day-long player can do that and more. I guess that's what I meant :) Originally posted by DrJoe Well, "more" is in the eyes of the beholder, I guess. I know you have contributed greatly to this forum by flashing the firmware upgrades temporarily at your site before pulling it off. But trust me, I have been searching and trying to fact find anything to do with improvements from the upgrades in this forum as well as other forums eg. hometheaterspot.com ... but I have managed to find almost zilch in regards to RP82 specifics. In fact, I have even read about adverse effects from the upgrades from some threads... what about that? Recently, you seem to be frustrated over the so-called repeating queries (always mentioning that the info is available in past posts or threads). Perhaps it's high time for a proper FAQ? Perhaps there is no clear indication of certain information, that causes such reoccuring questions, you think? To be honest, I haven't seen productive or actual feedback from you, regarding improvements or problems from your side. Kindly provide the link, if not. CJayB 06-03-04, 09:16 PM Sango has been so helpful to me and everyone else in regards to these firmware upgrades, that maybe it is time to let him rest in peace and enjoy his home theater. This is a long thread, but there are people who have reported the benefits to upgrading, enough so that I don't think it should be expected of Sango to go over this ground again along with everything else he has done. pixel8 06-03-04, 09:59 PM Originally posted by CJayB Sango has been so helpful to me and everyone else in regards to these firmware upgrades, that maybe it is time to let him rest in peace and enjoy his home theater. FYI, my questions are for all to answer. I could have PM Sango and bugged him like everyone else asking for the upgrades, but I didn't. It's interesting how some topics in this forum can be discussed to death and subsequent deaths, but my simple questions can be that sensitive. gtaylor74 06-03-04, 10:56 PM To be honest, I haven't seen productive or actual feedback from you, regarding improvements or problems from your side. First, running this thread is not Sango's job, he doesn't get paid for any of this and he isn't obligated to provide you, me, or anyone else on this forum with anything. He has provided what insights he can and has spent a lot of time on this, for which I say thank you. He has provided the firmware and initial support from his own free time, but it's not his job to provide reports, feedback, links, etc that you may want. Perhaps it's high time for a proper FAQ? Perhaps there is no clear indication of certain information, that causes such reoccuring questions, you think? If you want a proper FAQ, get started working on one. Take it upon yourself to assist in it's creation. As for the firmware, these upgrades aren't supported by Panasonic so if it works, fine. If it doesn't, you're out of luck. The firmware obviously addresses some issues or makes modifications of some sort or they wouldn't exist. It would be nice to know exactly what they are, but as Panasonic doesn't document them we'll never know for sure. Sango 06-03-04, 11:00 PM Hi Pixel HTS and HTF are not the primary threads reguarding the firmware information - Only AVS. The advertised changes would be the things which people notice. It's also going to be difficult to create a FAQ unless we have Panasonic's official documentation to the firmware changes but we know that's not possible. Reguarding the firmware are available as long as you donate - BTW: It's KevinT's site, not mine. From my side of improvements which I mentioned at the beginning of the thread somewhere but Il'l recall my accounts here. The material I mainly watch is anime which are made in CGI which made it quite obvious for observing the before and after(both my RP82 and 56). When watching, it's a lot more dimentional and realistic as the rendering and graphics changed so it has more of the "in your face" type affect. Also the video is more film like as the animation is smoother than before. The other changes could be the layer, response etc.. which has already been mentioned which I also experienced. I did notice a fix on one of my anime's where it showed it displayed a graphic glitch which only displayed on my RP82(not the 56) a certain part of the disc which has now eliminated itself away after the update. Maybe you can try upgrading your own unit and you'll see what mean. Sango 06-03-04, 11:18 PM Just like to add about the support of the firmware update for Panasonic. They do support them as long as it's done by an authorized dealer. I do believe they support them even if you did it yourself, assuming you have the original disc. The picture of the disc is provided in this attatchment pixel8 06-03-04, 11:34 PM Originally posted by Sango Just like to add about the support of the firmware update for Panasonic. They do support them as long as it's done by an authorized dealer. I do believe they support them even if you did it yourself, assuming you have the original disc. And this is why I've been holding back on the DIY upgrade. My RP82 is still under warranty. Hmm.. that just gave me a sneaky idea... perhaps I will upgrade it and if any problems arise, I can send it back to them for repairs or reset (knowingly the techies don't have a clue about the original firmware given and if I've done an upgrade myself). Thank you, for the improvements feedback from your point of view. I'll probably give it a shot to upgrade and hopefully I may see the improvements as night and day, otherwise I'll just psycho myself it's for the better like everyone else here. Sango 06-04-04, 12:09 AM Hi Pixel8: Now I know where you're comming from. All of my units are already out of warrenty(except the R3 of RP82) so I'm not afraid to update it reguardless even if it was still in warrenty. It would be a rip off to go to a authorized dealer and to update it and they may even charge you labor, might as well buy the original disc and DYI! It is true the tech's cannot prove that you updated the unit or not because they seem clueless if you ask them "what is the latest version?!!". Most likely they have the previous disc anyways. Also during the RP82 releases, there were various versions of the firmware released, like 266, 272, 298 and some inbetween so there is no way to determine what the original firmware is. However, I do speculate that the original firmware maybe even lower than expected because when I look at the Panasonic parts site, the replacement EPROM chip is "RFKFRP65D160" and the "65D160" does give me a hint. I just wanted to make sure, is yours the stock unit? - Looking at post 762, it looks like you have an R3 unless you meant the R1 stock. Also what is your current firmware version you have onboard? Sango ps: I fixed my 2nd last paragraph on post 775 if it didn't make sence to you since I missed a word out. pixel8 06-04-04, 06:30 AM Originally posted by Sango I just wanted to make sure, is yours the stock unit? - Looking at post 762, it looks like you have an R3 unless you meant the R1 stock. GreenMtnGringo 06-04-04, 07:46 AM Thanks Omen and Sango for the feedback on my XP50 region-hack question. I recall reading on a different thread that there's a way to make Panasonic DVD players region-free via the use of Service Disc #2 and certain codes punched in on the remote control. Would such a scheme work on an XP50? If so, what's the best way to track down the Service Disc? Thanks again! GMG Sango 06-04-04, 10:22 AM GMG: Only certain units can use SVC Disc #2 but it only applies officially to these units below: DVD: DVD-RV31, DVD-RV41, DVD-RA61, DVD-RA71 SC-DV280 Systems: SC-DK10, SC-HT70, SC-DV250, SC-DM3, SC-DT100 Also the disc apparently works for RP56, RP91 and the Denon DVD-1600. Recently with the release of "The Medallion", it has a new protection scheme which can detect modified players. The protection can block the player from playing it by displaying on screen to use a "non-modified" player. This happend on my primary RP56 which I modified using the SVC Disc #2, however using the same disc on my RP82 which is using the JVB mod kit, the mod is able to get through it. Luckily I have a secondary RP56 which doesn't isn't modified yet =) The SVC Disc #2 is useful but the JVB mod kit is technically better. Sango DrJoe 06-04-04, 11:01 AM Gringo, To expound on Sango's answer: If you can bring up the password window, the disc will likely work. Read over the service disc threads to find out how to bring up the window, and if you can, then it MAY be worth proceeding. I say MAY because the efficacy of the hack is EXTREMELY limited. It will strip macrovision, which is useful for archiving or copying DVD's (and I know of only a few people who do so -- I don't), and for playing through VCR's (which is becoming less and less necessary as almost all TV's have video inputs). If you are a member of this forum, I highly doubt you have a TV which only has a coaxial input. As far as making the player region free -- well, I'm afraid I don't know ANYONE who has non-region 1 DVD's which are NTSC. Person after person in threads regarding the service disc says "I can't verify this hack because I don't have a non-region 1 NTSC DVD." All of my Region 2 disks are in the PAL format -- and the hack doesn't help with that. My player doesn't play PAL (or SEACAM, for that matter). Unless you have (or are likely to get) one or more NTSC non-region 1 DVD's, this is a useless hack. So, unless either of these features is of any real value to you, don't bother pursuing the disc. Later, Joe Sango 06-04-04, 11:40 AM Hi DrJoe: I do have Non-R1 NTSC discs, opps!!!. I happend to have two of them pictured here (http://home.comcast.net/~fu_family/NonR1.zip) which I use on my RP56 and 82 and A470-EN. For PAL discs, yes you must use the mod kit to do that. Sango DrJoe 06-04-04, 12:01 PM Hey Sango -- I figured you probably had some being into anime as you are. I've seen adverts online for a few Japanese DVD's in NTSC format. Thinking about it, I overspoke when I said I didn't know anyone who had one -- there was a guy I worked with in Austin, TX, who was into anime who had a couple of region 2 NTSC DVD's. I never actually saw them, though. My point, though, was that the region free hack has limited value (and no value unless you have non-region 1 NTSC DVD's). I considered going the Mod route for PAL -- but with Chinese DVD players (Apex and its clones) available for under $60, it doesn't make sense to do so. Joe Sango 06-04-04, 01:57 PM Ahh!! The black DVD isn't anime, it's Hiro (http://www.avexnet.or.jp/hiro/) !! Famous singer in Japan, like at the top. I guess so but if I wanted to use Faroudja then I would stick with the chip. Yes it is limited which will require you to get the full mod kit which would be recommended - Mandatory if you have a disc which blocks the SVC Disc #2 trick like Medaillion. Well my concern is with the Apex players and such because I've heard issues with them and I seen threads on animeondvd for example of them overheating, glitching etc... GreenMtnGringo 06-04-04, 03:44 PM Thanks Joe and Sango. I looked at it and I can't tell if my Region 2 DVD that I want to play on a Region 1 XP50 is NTSC or PAL. Gringo, I'm afraid you are going to have to find an inexpensive Chinese player which is region free and will convert PAL. Do some research -- many of the APex players at <$100 will do so. Joe CJayB 06-05-04, 02:44 AM For $70 to $80 you can get a much better player than Apex, the Toshiba SD-4900 that does great PAL to NTSC and is very easily made region free and has DVD-Audio as a bonus. GreenMtnGringo 06-06-04, 08:53 PM Thanks, Joe and Jay, for the Spinal Tap disc info. I gather from your comments that the XP50 won’t do a PAL > NTSC conversion no matter what region hack I apply to it (including the JVB kit Sango mentioned). That’s too bad, as I'm happy with the XP50 otherwise. I doubt I’ll invest in another DVD player just to play my one Region 2 disc. I’d consider the Toshiba DVD-4900, though, if it has better video and audio than the XP50 (which I assume is unlikely). Anyhow, thanks again for your help. GMG CJayB 06-07-04, 01:10 AM The SD-4900 does a good job for the money, but it can't touch the video quality of the XP50. The XP50 can output PAL if modded by JVB, but it doesn't convert PAL to NTSC. I've read conflicting reports of problems from those who've tried to upgrade the S35 - has anyone successfully upgraded an S35? Sango 06-07-04, 06:01 PM The S35 was never supported in the older distribution which was 50 megs. The current distribution which is about 100 megs is covered according to the official documentation. The story you most likely heard was when the older distribution was used to update the S35 and it ruined the player. Firmware V032 (If anyone heard about that one). Cannot update it with Sango`s disc.Shows me the same firmware before and after updating. If anyone has any idea what this DVD is,please help. (or should I just buy new one ........) Pinokio Sango 06-09-04, 01:03 AM Just curious, what's the file size on the disc you burned? Pinokio 06-10-04, 11:33 PM The name of the CD is "MEIAVCCODSDCPDDVDPDFD000001000". The size is 140MB. Three files "MEI_DVP" "VIDEO_TS" "Dvdupdt.frm". First time I have started it : Regular procedure "do you want to update it with new firmware?" It was updating it . Now,if I try to update it again ,does not give me any options.Just black screen and it looks like CD is stucked (only 00:00:00 on dthe lcd pannel). Same firmware "V032" before and after. I`m a bit confused because there is no "V032" on your list for CV-52 PAnasonic. If you have ANY idea what is going on please let me know.:) Pinokio Sango 06-10-04, 11:43 PM Hi Pinokio: Looking at Kevin and the official documentation I have - it's v082 for the latest version, not 032. I'm not sure why your unit isn't accepting it. You should try the reset sequence first and then attempt to reflash the unit again. If it still doesn't work I could file transfer you the previous disc which also happends to have the same firmware version as well if you want to give that a try. Just PM me for more info. Sango vmark 06-11-04, 07:15 AM That is the exact same thing that happened with my CP67. To the letter. I wish I knew what was going on too. vn2000 06-13-04, 12:31 PM Hi Sango and Canadian fellowmen! I tried to donate and download the file using the link in the first post but get this message in return: "This recipient does NOT accept payments from non-U.S. PayPal accounts" Can Sango or anyone be kind enough to email the file/ good downloadable link? I am looking for r82 new firmware. My email: duywang@yahoo.com. Very much appreciate your help. REgards. VN Sango 06-13-04, 04:15 PM Hi vn2000: I contacted the host and has fixed the issue now. You can proceed with the CDN donation. Sango vn2000 06-13-04, 08:25 PM Thanks Sango. It is working now. Cheers. VN bill790 06-15-04, 12:43 PM I have a Panasonic XP50 that I bought on eBay about a year ago. I haven't yet updated it with anything. My display is a Sammy 50" DLP. Should I get the firmware? Would it make a difference? The last movie I watched was "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"--and the rainbows were HORRIBLE. Would the latest firmware help this? Bill Omen 06-15-04, 12:56 PM Bill, I don't have an XP50, but rainbows are issues with some DLP sets. My brother-in-law has a Samsung HLM437W and he and I see the rainbows, but he's not sensitive to it, so it doesn't bother him much. I'm just the opposite - it drives me crazy. I doubt that updating the XP50 firmware will mitigate your rainbows, but I would wait until someone with both an XP50 and a DLP posts their experiences. bill790 06-15-04, 01:11 PM Omen--thanks for the response. The only time the rainbows became an issue for me was when I was watching "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"--otherwise, the rainbows were noticeable, but they weren't distracting. Aside from the rainbows--would a firmware upgrade make a difference in the overall PQ for a XP50? This machine is out of the box with no upgrades. Bill Sango 06-15-04, 03:19 PM Yes, there is PQ differences on all the units after the upgrade. What firmware version do you have currently? None of the units comes with an update disc anyways if that is what your last sentence is referring to. Sango KKKK 06-17-04, 06:44 PM Sango and all the other talents here, I have a region free rp82 firmware v287 and if I check the status of it by using the pause+open+6 trick, I get 1PN162. That means it is R1 but I brought it in Hong Kong which is R3. No modification work has been done for this machine so far. Just want to know if I upgrade the firmware to v302, would I lose the region free ability. In Hong Kong, all DVD players sold out are region free instead. Thanks all for advice. Sango 06-17-04, 10:47 PM Hi "KKKK" Region/Macrovision free is modified. All DVD units are "stock" out of the box. Most of the R3 units are modified before they were made available to purchase. I have the R3 DVD-RP82 and the A470EN - both of them are region free. My other 3 RP82s(R1) are stock. Also my RP56 (R1) was a stock until I modified it using the SVC Disc #2 but I can change it back to stock if I wanted. If you use the official firmware, you will lose the capabilities of the mod because the unit will be back to stock - In this case it will play its own region only(the region check also displays it own region). To upgrade to the latest firmware for mod units, you need to obtain the patched version. However in order to do that, you need to contact the manufacturer of the mod chip. Sango KKKK 06-18-04, 09:14 AM Sango How did you get your R3 RP82? From somewhere in the states? Does it show 3NNXXX in the pause+open+6 trick. Mine is different, it is 1PNXXX. Am I right to say that it's an R1 unit but modified to all code? and if I apply the firmware upgrade it will return to R1? At the back of the player it shows R3. I am confused. If after the upgrade, it becomes an R3, then I don't mind. But if it turns to an R1, it will be almost no use to me anymore. How's your view. Thanks. KKKK Sango 06-18-04, 10:51 AM Hi KKKK: My R3 RP82 I bought is from an online store in the US which is imported from Singapore. Your unit is not different, it's the same as mine. The only reason it's displaying 1PNXXX using the region check diagnostic(not a trick) is because of the patched firmware and the mod chip. The patched firmware is the same as the original with the addition to communicate with the mod chip onboard. Upgrading the unit using the official firmware will truely change the unit back to stock and it will play its original region only. My view is that you should get the patched firmware and use it so you don't lose the capabilities of the mod. It'll be a waste of money if the mod wasn't working since you already paid for it when you bought the unit. The unit is the same, however that doesn't mean the units use the same mod chip - you will have to find this out on your own and contact the manufacture who made it to obtain the patched version. Sango Sango 06-18-04, 11:59 AM I decided to put this picture of the mod which is on my R3 RP82. For the R1 owners, can you figure out there is a DSP chip missing on this version (hint: notice that spot for chip) ? KKKK 06-19-04, 03:36 AM Sango I show you this picture and you will see the difference between mine and yours. There is no modification to the machine!! KKKK Sango 06-19-04, 11:19 AM KKKK: Unless the chip is on the underside of the daughterboard that would probably explain the difference. If there is no mod chip on your unit, the unit is still modified because the firmware is altered to provide the region free capabilities. I put up some pictures for you to look at. Here (http://home.comcast.net/~fu_family/dvdstuff.zip). Sango Sango 06-22-04, 05:28 PM bump GRCRYSTYK 06-22-04, 06:52 PM Well,....I have to say,....Sango helped me get through the update with my RP82. I want to clarify, will it will work on my S35? thanks, Dan Sango 06-23-04, 01:12 AM Hi idagon: By looking at the official documentation I have at home, that is a yes - assuming you're using the one from the website. Sango idagon 06-23-04, 09:10 AM i downloaded the firmware fron the first postof this thread (the on i made a donation to get access to the download) thanks sudhs 07-11-04, 09:47 PM Hi Sango, I own a CP-72 and recently upgraded the firmware from 286 to 302 as mentioned on the firmware upgrade site. Thanks for all your effort and hard work put into this. Well even after upgrading the firmware, I'm still facing a problem with the VCDs (created by the downloaded MPEG files of Indian movies downloaded from MIRC) getting stuck/frozen in between while playing. The sound and image just freeze at one place and this continually goes on and on with a break of 2 secs or so which is quite annoying. I use NERO 6 to burn/create VCDs and have checked the encoding codec etc. for the same. All seem to be fine. And the surprising part is that some VCDs have this problem while others don't. Also please note that i'm using brand new out of the box Memorex CD-RW for VCD creation. Hope all this data helps. Please let me know if somebody has contacted you with a similar problem in CP-72 so that I can take reqd steps to do away with the problem. Regards, sudhs Sango 07-11-04, 10:02 PM Hi sudhs: Good question. There can be several variables which could affect it. I'll just list a few off my head. - Does the player like the encoding? The computer can play it without an issue but player may not. - The speed of the burn or the methods used to burn the disc. - Tilt calibration I personally don't burn VCDs so I never tried it but I have played burned and legit VCDs before without issues on my RP56/82. Hopefully other members who do burn VCDs maybe have a solution to this? geocab 07-11-04, 10:57 PM Sango, Isn't is nice that your effort is still helping guys out, so long after you started this thread?:) Geo Sango 07-11-04, 11:29 PM Oh yeah heheH!! I might have some more suprizes in the future. Will have to see when the time comes. ace5000 07-19-04, 10:07 PM Hello Sango, I have an RP62 which could use an update. All links to the firmware seem to be dead. How can I get it? Many thanks. ace5000 07-19-04, 11:50 PM I got it, thanks. Sango 07-20-04, 12:36 AM Hi Ace: Glad you found it. Regarding the DVD+-R/RW, it will still depend oh the methods on how you burn it. For questions reguarding that, contact AVS member FrankS because he knows how to do it. Sango em-dash 07-20-04, 03:18 AM Sango, I made my donation and downloaded the ISO. The image burned fine, and the CD managed to reset the settings of my player back to defaults. It never updated the firmware, though. It just went straight to a screen that told me it completed and to eject the disk. I don't understand what you mean by "DVD-1600 is on the older disk". I only saw three options for download, and all appeared to be the same disk in different formats. I see a lot of Panasonic talk in this thread, but has anyone successfully upgraded a DVD-1600? thanks, Greg Sango 07-20-04, 10:10 AM em-dash: It most likely resetted the unit because the unit is most likely up to date already. Did you happen to check the firmware list and compare with the unit before you did it to confirm? What I mean by the older disc is the one which is dated March, not June. Sango ace5000 07-20-04, 12:26 PM Thanks Sango for the referral. em-dash 07-20-04, 03:05 PM Sango, It has the firmware that came with the unit when it was new about 18 months ago. The last three digits are 043. How do I get the March disk? I didn't see any dates on the download page, but I can only assume I got the June disk. thanks, Greg smokeyjon 07-26-04, 01:56 AM First, thanks Sango, my XP30 updated flawlessly. Second, am I totally missing something, or does the XP30 not support disc jacket display? Thanks! patriotpa 07-27-04, 10:15 PM STILL won't play TDK -R Memorex -R NOT happy. KenLand 07-27-04, 11:03 PM Would someone please review or provide a pointer on how to check the current firmware version in a Panasonice DVD player? Thanks, Ken Sango 07-28-04, 12:37 AM patriopa: What burning methods are you doing to burn the disc? If you didn't burn it to the right method which the unit likes, it won't accept it reguardless of brand name at all. ===== Ken: To check firmware version, you need to hold PAUSE+OPEN on player, press 7 on remote. The full firmware display will be shown on the player's display. The last 3 numbers on the right is the firmware version - however depending on the unit you have, there maybe two versions for the same unit so you will need to look at the whole firmware version(ie. RP62 and RP62Z) and look. Sango loganxman72 07-29-04, 06:08 PM I have a panasonic rp62 zone 1 I'd like convert to Multi-zone Could you tell me where the Link to download the firmware is ?. KenLand 07-29-04, 08:25 PM Thanks Sango, Can you tell us if you'll be getting more Panny updates? I ask because I'm going to get an F87K for 5 discs and DVD-A. From reading posts it sounds like its going to need a firmware update just to get all the features listed on the Panny website. :) Ken Sango 07-29-04, 10:53 PM Hi Ken: I maybe looking into firmware updates but not at this time. I'm not going to look for updates until a lot later thou. ============ Loganxman: You need to get a mod kit for that. gtaylor74 07-29-04, 11:27 PM Sango, Please check your private messages. mday36 08-01-04, 07:42 PM Hi there, Complete newbie to all this. First, I have a Panasonic LV60 bought in South Africa in 2002 - plays Region 2 DVDs (PAL). I am now working in Belize (NTSC Region 1). Is there any benefit in upgrading the firmware for my current location? If so, can the upgrade be reversed in the event that I return to e.g. UK? Second, I cannot seem to find the Firmware version on my LV60 (I suspect it is because the Open button is merely a catch for the door. Is there another combination of buttons I need to press to find the firmware version? Grateful for advice. MDay 36 alan93 08-16-04, 12:44 PM I bought KT's firmware update. (always skeptical of those web donation things, and I'm cheap :) ) but it worked great on my panasonic home theater 5 disk dvd HT-67. Origineally, I was able to play vcd but not DVD +R. I was EXTREMELY depressed when I found this out. Was thinking of selling it (for a loss) and buying a new one. The display during update was strange looking and got a little nervous but got prompt at end and it worked. Also noticed VCDs seemed to play a little better. I was getting a loud "chirping noise" along with pixelation during playback. One note however, I couldn't get the current firmware version to display on screen by following KT's instructions. (press open and pause and #7 i believe). I guess that its probably something that is unique for each player? anyway, I'm happy :p frankx99 08-16-04, 01:04 PM What is a good price to sell this unit for. Kevin70 09-04-04, 01:17 AM Does anyone know what Firmware Version 068 does for the Denon DVD-1600. I just did the PAUSE-OPEN-7 thing on my DVD-1600 and the last 3 numbers displayed were 065. I assume this means I have Firmware Version 065. Does anyone know what might have changed. Are there release notes for the Firmware Versions? I'm guessing there was a Version 066 and 067 as well (but maybe they were never released externally). Any help would be appreciated. I'm trying to decide whether to update the firmware on my player. Sango 09-04-04, 01:51 AM Unforunately the manufacturer never document changes was we have to look with our own owns so basically if you read through the threads, it's all by observations. Basically all I can say is that the color and details have improved, player response is a bit quicker and layer change time is less as well. I do believe the changes are exactly the same as the RP82 since these two are about equivalent in PQ. Sango bruce2003 09-04-04, 06:15 PM Is there a place where you can buy the disk, rather than download and burn? Thanks. Jantzen 09-07-04, 02:42 PM How exactly can I get the latest firmware for the Denon DVD-1600? It looks like at firmwareupdate.us only Panasonic units are listed and it states on that site: There is no information available about future updates or updates for other models. Yet Sango's first post in this massive thread states: The previous disc which has the Denon DVD-1600 is on the website however the link isn't shown to avoid confusion with the currerent disc. To obtain it, you must donate and email Kevin for it. Yet firmwareupdate.us states: Do not email me with questions - there will be no response - ask questions in the forum  cseyer 09-09-04, 10:46 PM Just a FYI I succesfully used this disc to upgrade the firmware on my Panasonic DVD-LV65 from 248 to 256. bladerunner 09-09-04, 10:46 PM I applied this firmware on my DVD-RP62, and it upgraded fine (now version 073).. just posting to let oters know that it worked for this model (i'm not sure if it was already posted here or not). datman 09-22-04, 11:48 PM Thanks Sango and everybody else. I finally updated my RP-91. At first I had a hard time understanding how to do the upgrade. The 1st disc I burned didn't work. I don't know why. I read the tread and downloaded all the files and burn options. I was just afraid. I might harm the unit and didn't continue trying. Today I returned to the tread and found newer simpler burn instructions and burned the iso file using nero. Interesting the 1st disc I played was a back up and I thought the picture looked grainy I was not sure at all if it improved perhaps made it worse. Then I stuck the original dvd to see if it looked grainy I discovered I had the region problem and needed to reset and I did, thanks Sango for the instructions!!! Now it works and doesn't appear to be grainy. I'm not sure how it has improved, it may be better . As I see differences I will post them Bill Sango 09-23-04, 12:00 PM Hi Bill: Great to hear your response. What firmware did you have orignally on there? I'm also a but curious about the grainyness, maybe you forgot to set back the user settings(includes progressive mode) after the reset? I do believe you're refering to the blue DVD screen because it is a test pattern, so you maybe seeing that as grainyness as there is a bit of raster. Sango ps. Can you give me a 5 over HTS too! datman 09-24-04, 04:52 PM I thought I posted a reply last night? you were right I didn't have the progresive scan on. Which is most likely why I saw more grain. The picture did improve after resetting the unit and with P/S turned on I'd say the piture is a little better. ps. Can you give me a 5 over HTS too! I don't understand updated from 250 Sango 09-24-04, 05:01 PM Hi Datman: You are also on the HTS forum since I see the same post over there. On the other forum can give people a rating, which is what my ps is refering to =) BTW: For your RP91, use "Auto 3". It works well with the latest firmware. Sango toy4two2 09-28-04, 01:36 AM Just upgraded my old DVD-RV31. Thought maybe it would play SVCD's now (just choked on them before) No luck. Broke all the rules burning it, used crappy GQ CD-R's, burned at 16X, and used Nero 6. No special software or settings, just clicked on the NRG file and burned it in 5 minutes. RV31 read it and updated fine. Oh well it makes me feel good inside my ancient DVD player has a new firmware :) Sango 09-28-04, 04:02 AM The Nero one is easier to use since the NRG is more straight forward. Blindwrite is the one where you need to pay attention to because it is an advanced copy program. In the end BW pays itself off when it comes to copying through copy protected discs. Also, burning at above 4x may not guarentee it would read on all units, which is why the lower speed is recommend because it burns deeper into the disc. If you try that on a music disc at a higher than 4x(1x if your unit can do it), it's going to have issue - I tried this myself on my RP82, it started jumping all over the place because it couldn't read. Divertissement 09-28-04, 12:48 PM Hello everyone, Thanks all of you for the amount of info about the firmware upgrade and the files. Its really great. BUT ! I downloaded the ISO file and burned the disk. Did the upgrade on my CV52 player (answered Yes, updated message on player front display, not on tv screen, removed the disk, turned off and on, reset it !) step by step like it is said in the threads and in the TXT files with the ISO file I downloaded. I'M STILL AT 032 ! I tried to put the disk back in the unit, it reads it, then simply stops. No messages. I spent a few hour searching this forum to an answer from someone who finally got from 032 to the 082. Everything I saw was people still at 032. I'm sorry if I missed something in the threads but I carefully checked and saw nothing about it. Is it upgraded or not ? Did someone ever saw "082" displayed ? Thanks again. Sango 09-28-04, 08:54 PM I never herad of that unforunately. Maybe you forgot to enable the progressive setting after the update? mrwilson 09-30-04, 02:20 PM On the XP30 and XP50 you have to enable 480p in two places. One is in the setup or 'action' menu. The other is under the 'U' settings. Hit 'display' to get to that after you turn on progressive under the action menu. Also try the different 'auto' settings. I think Auto3 is the one you want to get rid of the combing. PooperScooper 09-30-04, 04:37 PM Output 480i and see if the deinterlacer in your TV/display handles if any differently. larry Sango 10-01-04, 11:01 PM From what I heard is that the DRC is very horrible and it shouldn't even be used - I was told this from an ISF person. mrwilson 10-03-04, 03:47 PM There is still the occasional bad edit that produces very brief combing on my XP30. According to Secrets, this should not ever happen. I happens but it recovers a lot quicker than other players. FYI, I've combing with every deinterlacer. I've seen it with my XP50 DCDi doing the deinterlacing and even with the iScan Ultra and HD doing the deinterlacing. We're talking just a couple of frames though and most people wouldn't ever see it. It's a world better than the old RP91 combing. Divertissement 10-20-04, 08:42 PM Hello Sango, I'm sorry to bring this subject again, but I have a last question about my problem with firmware display still at 032 and not 082 on my Panny CV52 (see my previous post on page 43). The link you gave at the first post sends us to a page where it shows an example of a good burn, which is what I have on my upgrade disk from the beginning (I download the rar file that was available in the forum (I can't remember what thread) and burned the iso file on a cd). I found the following: The file Dvdupdt.frm in the main directory is, according to his example, 53,300 KB. Mine is 32,800 KB. Total size on CD is, according to his example, 140 MB. Mine is 94,3 MB. Do you know why there is a difference ? Maybe my question is stupid but was my disk OK when I ran the upgrade in my DVD player ? Thank you very much. Sango 10-21-04, 01:08 AM Divertissement: The reason for the two different sizes is because they are two different firmware versions - The 140MB being the latest. The one intially released is the 94.3 one before I gotten the newer one so there is no harm when you updated it. The CV52 is supposedly works for the latest disc and officially lists 082 on the documentation I have. However, for the Denon 1600, then 94.3 one needs to be used because it's only on that one and not on the latest one. Hope this helps Sango Divertissement 10-21-04, 07:42 AM Yes it does. Thanks Sango. I guess I can only repeat vmark words: "The player still seems to play all my media fine, but the firmware remains 032. Oh well, no loss, no gain, I guess." Sango 12-02-04, 02:55 PM That's why email isn't an option. MikeParent 12-02-04, 03:26 PM OK. I wasnt sure cause I dont actually use gmail much yet... Alternatives? PipeHitter 12-02-04, 07:42 PM Well, the image could be rar'ed down to less than 10mb. Then each file could be sent as an attachment. Isn't it around 50mb? It would only be 6 files or so...... Sango 12-02-04, 09:18 PM It can be done that way but it's a hassle compared to one transfer. I have two versions of the firmware, the 50 and 70. The one you need will depend on what unit is going to be updated. Sango MikeParent 12-03-04, 08:20 AM OK folks, until Sango gets his web host woes straightened out, I can host the panasonic firmware download: ftp: ftp.mikeparent.ca usr: mparenttemp pwd: firmware Sango has uploaded a nero rar file here called "Panasonic DVD Firmware Update Nero.rar" It is 78.8 MB in size Sango can you let me know when I can remove this as I dont think I can host it indefinitely... Enjoy! EDIT: Jan 20- Do to a temporary change in my hosting plan, I no longer have the space to host this until May - I will post an update then... my apologies. pezdoctor 12-06-04, 11:03 AM Apologies, as I didn't have time to read through the 45 pages. Do I need this firmware update if I currently have 282-version on my RP82? [I only watch mainstream DVD-movies from the major studios.] I'll save the bandwidth if it won't benefit me directly. Thanks, Keith Sango 12-06-04, 12:11 PM MikeParent: The link is back on since the host responded and reported no problems. -------------- pezdoctor: There are improvements in the PQ with the new firmware. The performance of the unit responds better too. The only thing I caution people is, it's gotta be stock unit. Sango pezdoctor 12-06-04, 12:49 PM Sango, Thank you for responding. I have your Nero.rar file---I have uncompressed the contents (141MB '.nrg' file) with winrar. I also have Nero Burn 6. What are the next steps for burning the correct file to CD-R? Or a link to that info? [I do have a stock RP82, and will burn at 4X] Regards, Keith karos 12-06-04, 01:30 PM i have an sdi modded rp56. As i have been largely ignorant of the update issues, could someone direct me to the site? Thanks, this thread has no refs to that player. Sango 12-06-04, 04:34 PM pezdoctor: There are reference pics on the firmware website if you're unfamiliar with how to use it. For the users who already know, just double click the image and go on from there. Depending which Nero you're using (Nero / Nero Express, use DAO/96) if possible. Sango karos 12-06-04, 07:08 PM Originally posted by MikeParent OK folks, until Sango gets his web host woes straightened out, I can host the panasonic firmware download: thank you. will it update only the 91 or other pannys too? Sango MikeParent 12-07-04, 09:17 AM OK thanks Sango - I will leave my copy up for a bit anyways... I will edit my post above when I take it down... pezdoctor 12-07-04, 09:21 AM Thanks to MikeParent & Sango. My RP82 update worked fine. Keith Divertissement 12-09-04, 08:04 AM Hello everyone ! Hey Sango ! Guess what ! A few days ago, I decided to download the nrg file from the mikeparent ftp server, which is the 140mb file (remember that I only tried the first one under 100mb). I burned the CD and placed it in my CV52 unit. It only read the disk to display a black screen then return back to default screen. No questions asked. Yesterday, I was looking at a movie and saw that my unit settings were back to default (looks like a reset was performed by the disk). I decide to check the firmware displayed on the unit and... I saw 62D082 instead of the good old v032. Looks like that I really needed the full 140mb file. Thanks to you and mikeparent. Now I'll have to see if something has changed. I hope vmark will see this and try. Maybe his problem is the same. Regards. MikeParent 12-09-04, 10:44 AM Your welcome sir - you also bring up a very good point - this will reset the settings on the player - I had to go back in and re-enable progressive scan and DTS among other things... Atomic Flip 12-12-04, 01:31 AM Firmware for Denon DVD-1600? I have been looking everywhere and cannot find it. Does anyone here have the 94 meg image file (the one originally posted) that would be willing to share it with me? I would be extremely grateful. I have unfortunately spent the entire evening burning CDs from the 140 meg image.. not knowing that it did not include the Denon firmware. :( Thanks, A.F. Rafael2K 12-12-04, 02:06 AM Sorry, another guy late to the party. Does this firmware update help with the RP56 as well? Thanks in advance for your answer. BIG THANKS to SANGO!!! :D I have successfully upgraded my Denon from 054 to 068 and I must say the image improvement is very noticeable. Colors seem more saturated. Deeper blacks aswell. I am not sure how they managed to do it but it is indeed improved. I do have the 94 meg file now. If someone is in need of it still lets see if we can find a place to host it for a while. Mike Parent, How about your FTP? Thanks again Sango! A.F. Russell Johns 12-13-04, 10:51 PM Atomic Flip: I've been trying to make sure I've got the correct file for updating my Denon 1600 from 054 to 068. I even went so far as to buy the firmware update disk from JVB Digital - and it didn't work - still at 054. So...it seems like you've been successful. Have you had any luck getting a host for the file? The largest file on the DVD burned by Blindwrite 4.5.7.92 from a compressed RAR file (rp82v302) is ~59 meg. In your post you mentioned the "full 94 meg file"; is this the size of one of the files on the burned DVD? If you could post the list of files on the final DVD I would certainly appreciate it - I really don't want to trash my SDI-modded 1600 by trying to update with the wrong firmware. Thanks. Russ Sango 12-14-04, 01:20 AM Thef files are on a CD, not DVD. The image I provided flip is the Nero image of it. The BW image doesn't need to be used anymore since it has extra information(which is useful for copy protected disc) which isn't necessary for this disc. The Nero image is smaller in otherwards. ------------------ Atomic: Reguarding the notice about colors, the MPEG decoder had to be re-written in other to notice the changes you've noticed. Sango Russell Johns 12-14-04, 02:28 AM I mis-spoke - it's a CD, not a DVD. So the bottom line is: does anyone have the file? Thanks, Russ Sango 12-14-04, 05:48 AM It's mentioned right in my thread so I'm not sure what the problem is. A friend actually suggested that I used a different brand of DVD rom and a different burning Software. I was using CompUSA dvd and burning with Roxio. I switched to TDK Dvd and used Nero and it worked. So I am not sure if the combination of the burning software and the DVD make the difference. stevoruni ellisr63 12-15-04, 01:31 AM I sure would like a copy of the file for my Denon 1600 also. Shady 12-18-04, 02:56 AM I've tried upgrading my rp-91's firmware using the latest file (80 MB rar, 144 MB nrg), but when I put the disk in the player I get a message that "The player is not applicable to the up-date. Please eject the disk." I burned the CD using Nero 5, and it looks like a good burn according to the images on the firmware site. My current firmware version is 208 - this is what was installed at the factory. Any idea why the upgrade isn't working for me? Is my current version too old? Sango 12-18-04, 12:45 PM Hi Shady: You're not the first one who's had this issue - this happened to several others out of the majority of owners. The solution is to upgrade to older newer versions before upgrading to the latest. I know that 259 to 262 works fine. You can get the other versions here (http://home.cogeco.ca/~hdtvguy/firmcheck.htm). Sango bannani 12-18-04, 04:00 PM Hello Sango, I ve a panasonic european version of the RP91 which is RA71; I am looking for making it region free and upgrade it to a new firmware. Can you help me? Thanks Bruno rwestley 12-18-04, 04:10 PM Sango, Any news on the 97S firmware updates. I hope something will be coming soon to fix the Macroblocking problem. Sango 12-18-04, 04:12 PM Well I can tell you that the firmware list does have the RA71. However, the thing is I'm not quite so sure if it's the same unit because the firmware reports are different. I'm also unsure if it can be made region free with the SCV Disc #2 trick unless you have confirmed it. ------------------------ rwestley: No, I'll let let news out when I get the information. Sango bannani 12-18-04, 04:16 PM thanks sango, What is the way to obtain this disc to try it on my RA71? thanks Bruno Sango 12-18-04, 04:20 PM bannani, Yeah but unless you have a contact in Australia then you would be out of luck because the disc was distributed from Panasonic Australia. You can test without the disc by getting the hidden password window to come out which I described in the forums. Sango FlySaab 12-18-04, 06:53 PM I have an unmodded Denon DVD-1600 that I would also like to update. I am currently at 054. I'm using a Mac OS X system, so I need an ISO image version of the update. But somehow I had to reset my RP82 due to some disc problem. I didn't realise it until much later that my player is no longer multi-region. By pressing pause, eject and 7, it shows 3PN (used to be 1PN). I'm surprised that the multiregion is gone, isn't it hardware related and un-erasable? If it's software related, is there any way of getting it back (similar to firmware update)? Jeff D 12-19-04, 02:10 PM Originally posted by pixel8 Hi Sango, I'm in a fix now. As far as I know the only way to set/reset it would be with the service discs. BTW all firmware upgrades reset the region settings just like the other setting to the default values. Sango 12-19-04, 03:55 PM If the firmware upgrade was performed that tne ERPOM would of been re-written losing the mod capabilities instnatly. I do believe the unit is still regino free except the unit is setup to report as R3 for RCE purposes. If you have the JVB mod then try this.... Using the remote - Power on unit, turn off, press 1, then power again. Perform the reset sequence, then set all user settings again. When checking the region, it should report back R1 again. If you want to change the unit to report a differnt region then you can press other numbers form 2-6 if you like. Sango Shady 12-19-04, 06:11 PM Sango, thanks for the link to older firmware versions. I did successfully upgrade to 236, then to 259, but I still get the same error when trying to go to 262. It's something of a moot point, however, since the only reason I was trying a firmware upgrade was because my player suddenly stopped playing my dvd's (still plays audio cd's fine). It reads the first few seconds, sometimes displays the first frame or two of the first track, and then slows down and eventually locks up (no error codes). I took it to a repair shop I trust (not an authorized Panasonic shop unfortunately) and the technician said it did play older dvd's but had trouble with newer ones. He talked to a panasonic rep who suggested a firmware upgrade, but I still have the same problem now. Since it plays older dvd's, it doesn't sound like the laser is the problem. I'm guessing a hardware problem with the mainboard. Doh! Any other suggestions before I look on the bright side and pick up a 59avi? Sango 12-19-04, 08:01 PM Maybe your spindle motor is beginning to fail if it actually stops spinning. Most likely there is a way to get to the 262 indirectly. Since the 236 has the version override, you can go back to that version then try 262 or 250. I do have a patch overide 227 version as well. Sango Jeff D 12-20-04, 12:00 AM Originally posted by Sango If the firmware upgrade was performed that tne ERPOM would of been re-written losing the mod capabilities instnatly. Sango, you know what part (part number?) contains the configuration settings? Generally firmware code is kept in a flash part and configuration settings on another part. I've never looked at the parts inside these players, I'd like to hope I could read a part and modify it. =) If anyone knows... what part contains the settings? And maybe have the skills to figure out what location is affected by changing the region setting? just occured to me that these settings could also be all the other internal values displayed in diagnostic mode... Shady 12-20-04, 01:22 AM Originally posted by Sango Maybe your spindle motor is beginning to fail if it actually stops spinning. I tried running a dvd with the cover off to clean it, and it is spinning just fine, as far as I can tell. It doesn't slow down in that sense - what does happen is that the time counter goes normally up to about 4 seconds, then takes more than a second to get to 5, then several seconds to get to 6, and so on until I turn it off. If it was having trouble reading the disk because of a bad laser or motor or tracking error, then I would expect an error code, and problems with all disks, not just some. It looks like the data is being read but not processed properly. In any event, if upgrading the firmware to 236 and 259 didn't fix it, I don't think 262 will help any. It's served me well since Sept 2001, but I think it may be time to say good-bye, and hello to a 59avi. It was actually in a Manhattan warehouse on 9/11, so I suppose it's done well to last this long. pixel8 12-20-04, 01:40 AM Hi Sango, Will try the sequence mentioned. Didn't know the multi-region has to be manually activated according to region. In the past, my region shows as 1 (pause,eject,6) but able to watch region 3 and 2. Originally posted by Sango If the firmware upgrade was performed that tne ERPOM would of been re-written losing the mod capabilities instnatly. Sango Sango 12-20-04, 01:51 AM For the JVB mod, the multi-region doesn't really need to be set according to region. However, it will need to be set if you are using RCE discs. Since the unit is reporting 3, using a RCE 1 disc will fail because it's not reporting 1. Changing the unit to report 1 will be able to run RCE 1 discs. The other regions are still playable as long as it's not a RCE regione discs other than 1. pixel8 12-20-04, 08:03 AM Hi Sango, a little off-topic but have you ever considered a DVI player eg. Momitsu whether it has better pq than RP82? Due to this little hiccup of my player, I'm toying with the idea of getting one. I believe I need to send in my rp82 ... the steps didn't change the region after all. Sango 12-20-04, 01:37 PM Hi pixel8: I haven't considered looking at other units so far. I'm not sure how your region jumped, but it will need to be remodded by the place you gotten the unit from (not a place to fix it). BTW: what's region unit do you have? Also does your unit actually have a mod chip? Sango pixel8 12-20-04, 07:20 PM I probably have a region 3 unit and not sure about the mod chip as I don't dare open it up to see. Will take it the service center and hopefully they will not charge me for a simple pop-in-the-disc installation of region free mod. Sango 12-20-04, 08:51 PM The region listed on teh back of the unit is your unit's original region. The Panasonic Service Center only look at stock units and their own country region only. Most likey you will have to talk to the place where you gotten it from for the solution. bknight286 12-20-04, 10:36 PM Is there still an active download link? Then that reply spurns two more questions :) 1.) can I perform this update with a modded unit? and 2.) Any suggestions on where to look for modding the unit? Thanks. Sango 12-27-04, 09:12 PM As mentioned in the thread, the firmware is for stock units only (except for SDI mod). Using it on a modified unit other than SDI, will be lost since the unit will be back to factory state.. If you want to look for mods, go to JVB. bundee1 12-27-04, 09:22 PM After a strange week with the DVD player. I got it to work. I followed all the instructions to download the firmware and burn it to a disc (easier than it looks). I ran downstairs to pop it into my DVD RA60 and the player says the firmware is not applicable to my player! So after trying a couple of times I did the hard reset and voila I can play my Region 1 discs again. I havent tried Region 2 discs again because Im scared of screwing it up again. I wonder if it did make it region free or just reset the settings? The link at the beginning of the thread is good but you can only get access to the download if you make a donation to the site via Paypal. Thanks for the help and if anyone needs the files I can try to help as well by emailing it to you. Happy New Year! bundee1 12-27-04, 09:28 PM P.S. I think I made the disc correctly because the player seemed to recognise that it was a firmware update disc and it tried to read it. I couldnt reset it with the remote so I tried it on the player itself and it worked. It said "initializing" and then restarted. Any answers guys? Sango 12-28-04, 03:35 AM When the disc is loaded, the disc is set to make the unit reset the settings before continuing with going through the update screen. From what I know, you have to reset the player using the unit itself, not remote. The S97 does have a option to do it but it isn't the advanced one which I mentioned on the site. It would be "Initializing" or "Int" then by performing the other sequence will be "Reset". Sango Mike C 12-29-04, 01:18 PM After sending the hdmi sd5960 to toshiba for replacement I decided to connect the RP-91 back up and update the firmware. I updated the unit with the four that are available, including the latest one (262) thank you Sango! I did notice an improvement in pq but I also noticed a better sound field, it seems to have more depth and clarity? Is this possible that the firmware could alter audio processing? My receiver is a Denon 5800 running through Def. Tech. Mike Sango 12-29-04, 02:24 PM Hi Mike: If you mean the analog output for the audio, then yes. For digital, hard to say. I believe Omikron who tested something simlar in the past with the update for an XP30, couldn't hear differences. Sango Mike C 12-29-04, 02:38 PM It is the digital output, unless I am used to the other sd-5960 with digital output. It sounded like a marked improvement, tonight I will try it with a DTS 6.1 dvd. I downloaded the file from the ftp site and burned it onto the CD-R. I put it into the CV52, the screen went black and then back to the default screen (exactly like below) with no questions asked. It looks like the CV52 was reset, but my firmware still shows V032. If I try again, I get the exact thing. So I tried this. 1) power off 2) Put CD-R into disc 1 slot 1 3) Screen went black, then back to default screen. 4) Eject CD-R from disc 1. 5) Put CD-R back into disc 1 and screen says "completed, remove disk" 6) Reset unit as per instructions 7) I'm still at V032. I tried for 2 hours and I'm still at V032. Suggestions? Originally posted by Divertissement Hello everyone ! Regards. mallu2u 12-30-04, 01:12 AM Did anyone upgrade their CV-51 DVD Player? Sango 12-30-04, 01:21 AM That one is strange because the official documentation I have does list the CV-52 as a unit as updatable. It'll just say completed if the the unit is current or newer than that of the disc. That maybe true and it could be a typo with the actual documentation itself. albertacv52 12-30-04, 01:35 AM Hi Sango, Thanks for reading and replying. What is really odd is that Divertissement had the same issue and he is running 62D082 from V032? Is there another firmware file I can try? I tried the one from mikeparent and it downloaded okay with no errors and winrar tested the archive as good. I burned the file exacted as the instructions stated. Just wierd. I have done a lot of firmware upgrades in other technology areas and I wish the Panasonic was a bit more user friendly. Sango 12-30-04, 02:39 AM The older firmware disc I have you can try but I don't think anynoe has given it a shot on a CV52. I know that one has updates for fewer players. Yesterday, I showed a friend how to verify his firmware version on his CV52. By doing this it displayed mine. It is showing V032 again. I know I had 62D082 last time I checked and at that time I checked it a few times to be sure I was doing the right thing. Putting any disc won't change a thing. I don't know what to think anymore. Sorry albertacv52 01-03-05, 05:25 PM I have given updating this until there is a newer version of these files. This is the from the 140Mb file ... I still haven't received a response from that guy (after donating and emailing), do you have an "in" with him? If so, can you get us the link to get the DVD-1600 firmware update? thanks in advance FlySaab 01-05-05, 10:16 PM He sent it to me a couple of days ago, I can return the favor. Send me a PM. Sango 01-05-05, 10:23 PM Too many people look at two different firmware threads of mine. Better to keep it on this one besides the other. Plus some questions which have been repeated over and over have already been answered here. Sango FlySaab 01-05-05, 10:35 PM KevinT's firmware page links to the other thread, maybe he should change it to this one and the other thread locked with a link to come here. Sango 01-06-05, 12:00 AM Oh that I didn't realize. I'll have to let him know, if he reads it in time. Thanks joey c. 01-06-05, 10:06 PM Will any of this firmware work on the denon dvm 1815? I believe its the 5 disc version of the 1600, but not sure. thetooth 01-07-05, 10:38 AM I updated my 1600 last night.... seemed pretty easy. The biggest change I notice is that when a still picture comes on the screen (like a menu) it does not shift anymore. That used to really bug me! I think I also notice a slight speed increase. Thanks for the help flysaab!!! MythTrip 01-07-05, 01:58 PM Greetings, Unfortunately I found this thread a few days after my CD burner decided to quit working. Instead of just adding another burner, I'm going to be purchasing a new PC but it probably won't be for another month or two. Sorry if this is against the rules, but I have the Panasonic RP56 DVD player which looks like it's covered under this upgrade. I have never updated the firmware so I believe I would need an earlier firmware version? Anyway, could someone with the RP56 that was successful in updating it's firmware please burn and send me a CD-R? I will pay you in advance for your trouble and shipping costs. If you are interested, please PM me. Thanks, Jim Sango 01-07-05, 07:01 PM Hi Jim: The upgrade doesn't require a older newer version for this to be done. The original version for the RP56 is 045. The next revision was 056 and the latest being the 062 Rafael2K 01-07-05, 07:13 PM Originally posted by MythTrip Anyway, could someone with the RP56 that was successful in updating it's firmware please burn and send me a CD-R? I'll be happy to mail you a CD. Please send me a PM with your contact info. PipeHitter 01-08-05, 02:50 AM Just upgraded my Denon DVD-1600 and it went without a hitch. I'd like to thank Sango for providing the firmware, and also Divertissement for uploading it to me. Its members like him who speak so well for AVS, as he spent several days working with me to get the file completed. Thanks buddy. I'd like to pass on the favor, so for at least for a week or two I will host the rp82v302.iso on my server. In order to make the download a little easier I compressed the iso into 5 winrar files 9mb or smaller. Which just happens to be under the gmail file attachment limit (and most decent email providers) if some of you guys want to email the files to each other. I also included a .sfv checker for those of you who know how to use that and want to confirm the download. I did use recovery with the winrars in case you need to repair, and as a second redundancy I also created some .par files that you can repair the rars with if they show up corrupt. I placed quickpar in that folder incase you need it. This server also performs other duties so your speeds will vary. There is a limited number of users allowed so if its busy try again later. Do not hammer as your ip will be banned. I personally downloaded the files from the server, uncompressed to the .iso and then burned with Nero 6.0.0.3 and updated with no problems. So it is tested. ftp addy: pipehitter.isa-geek.com user: avsforum password: firmware port: 23580 Be sure and turn on passive mode on your ftp client. I used FlashFXP without a problem. Enjoy and thanks for all the help this thread provided me! garryld 01-09-05, 10:02 AM When you first power this player up what does it say on the display of the player. I just purchased mine on ebay and upon powering up it reads "Welcome to DVD World", I'm just curious about that. Is this player stock? The firmware in my machine now is 65 and will not upgrade to the 68 firmware I purchased at JvB, I'm getting, "Fail to read disc. Please eject the disc" this is after loading the disc and telling me download is in progress when attempting the upgrade. Any answers would be appreciated. One more thing, when playing 2.35 movies theres more black bar at the bottom of the screen then at the top on a Pioneer Elite 730 HDi. This is just the Denon my other DVD players do not exhibit this. Thanks, Garry. MythTrip 01-09-05, 12:17 PM Originally posted by Rafael2K Jim, I recently upgraded my RP56 using this procedure. It was a breeze. I'll be happy to mail you a CD. Most likely JVB didn't make it properly. Sango garryld 01-09-05, 02:06 PM Would you know where I would be able to purchase a Denon 1600 upgrade disc. Thanks, Garry. Sango 01-09-05, 02:18 PM garryld I just noticed a few posts about you PipeHitter is hosting it so you can try him first. Sango dangtong 01-11-05, 01:44 PM Anyone be able to get in PipeHitter's FTP? Not sure if the problem is the FTP site or my network here because I'm behind the firewall and may have port 23580 blocked from both directions. Can't wait to upgrade my 1600 firmware. Thanks. PipeHitter 01-11-05, 02:07 PM People have been in and out with succesful transfers almost constantly since I opened it up. Be sure you have passive mode turned ON in your ftp client. Sometimes playing with the settings can help, turn on/off site uses IPMASQ, site behind proxy, etc etc. Read the log from your client and it will usually tell you where the connection issue is. Like I stated, I used FlashFXP with default settings with no probs. You can d/l a trial ver of FlashFXP from http://www.flashfxp.com/ Or, you may be correct and your firewall is blocking incoming/outgoing ports that your client requires. Hope that helps. UMD_Terp 01-11-05, 02:32 PM I used FireFTP built into Firefox to download all the files... My dad owns a Denon 1600 that I plan on updating for him. The download went smoothly and I was able to burn a disk fairly easily from the .iso file. I have yet to update the player itself... Once I confirm that everything works, I can email the portions to people in need of the update provided you have an email account that can accept a 10MB attachment... Many thanks to PipeHitter for providing the hosting space and resources for the files. dangtong 01-11-05, 09:32 PM Originally posted by PipeHitter People have been in and out with succesful transfers almost constantly since I opened it up. UMD_Terp 01-14-05, 07:46 PM Well, I updated my dad's 1600 from 065 to 068... all went well... no glitches at all. If anyone wants the pieces of the .ISO disk image, just mail me and I'll try to send them out.... alanhe 01-20-05, 09:48 AM Is this compatible with the European version of the Panasonic LV60?? Very nervous to apply the upgrade in case I end up with a doorstop. Thanks PipeHitter 01-31-05, 01:54 AM Alrighty people, please grap the files if you are going to as I will be shutting this down soon. Prob in the next week or so..... Probly not... well could anybody supply me with a link for the latest firmware of the rp62? Haven't been able to find it anywhere.. Or.. you could upload it to my ftp email me at masta_skillz@hotmail.com Thanks, Lietuvis Sango 02-03-05, 01:37 PM lietuvis2005, The link that is hosted is the older disc which may not have had the RP62. I just upgraded my rp 91 to version 262 from www.firmwareupdate.us/. I looked on this thread and could not find a link. Is it still here? Sango 02-03-05, 10:55 PM It's there but I took it off since I'm finding a better host and some new things if I can. PipeHitter 02-12-05, 11:15 AM Alrighty guys. I've shut it down. From pretty much when I launched the server to when I shut it down someone d/l the files at least once a day. So there should be more than enough emailable files floating around the avs-members. Thanks again to Divertissement for upping it to me and to Sango for providing it in the first place. Hoped I helped some. /lurk mode on motoman 02-12-05, 02:42 PM I'd like to get ahold of the file for my RP-91. Is there still a place to download it? Jim |
