I really wish the signal meter was better on the Samsung 360. I can get about 45 for KCEN, but that's also what I get for KBTX. Sometimes it goes higher up to 77 and then down to 0. I'm guessing that if I can get it to lock in then I'll have better luck in the future.
Yeah, that signal meter sucks big time, not useable at all. Adding an individual channel is a pain, too.

dave99ag 06-23-04, 11:31 PM WHOOP!!!!!!!!!
I fiddled with my antenna a bit more thinking the weather would help out. Well, I figured out that my antenna was still positioned about 10-15 degrees off. Once I repositioned it, I was able to get 6 DT stations. I could pickup KXXV (ABC) and KWTX (CBS), but couldn't get KCEN (NBC). KXXV kind of came in, but not very well. KWTX came in great, but I don't need another CBS.
Well, I got pissed and turned this behemoth of an antenna at Houston (140 degrees). On my first scan I picked up 12, yes TWELVE, DT channels. They are all coming in great. Maybe it's the weather, but I'm one happy Aggie!
Channels:
KPRC-HD (NBC) 2-1
KPRC-SD (NBC) 2-2
KPRC-SD (NBC) 2-3
KBTX-DT (CBS) 3-1
KHOU-DT (CBS) 11-1
KTRK-HD (ABC) 13-1
KTRK-SD1 (ABC) 13-2
KTRK-SD2 (ABC) 13-3
KETH-D1 (TBN) 14-1
KAMU-DT (PBS) 15-1
KAMU-DT2 (PBS) 15-2
KTXH-DT (UPN) 19-1
KRIV-DT (FOX) 26-1
KNCT-DT () 46-1
KTMD-DT () 47-1
KAZH-DT () 57-1
KFTH-DT () 67-1
KFTH-DT2 () 67-2
A few others, but that's about it. Now I'm going to watch Leno in HD for the first time. Whoop!
jagouar 06-23-04, 11:48 PM yeah its the weather.... im getting all kinds of stations tonight.
dave99ag 06-23-04, 11:51 PM Well, hopefully I can at least get a few when the weather clears up. That or hope for stormy weather until D* adds HD locals. :)
labmansid 06-24-04, 12:24 AM Congrats on getting it working, Dave!! Leno is one of the best looking HD programs on. Like I said earlier the weather lately has been pretty conducive to the Houston stations. I think Summer is a good time of year for some help from tropo, also. Welcome to the Houston DT club!
Sid
mwesson 06-24-04, 11:19 AM Dave - If you actually pull this off and get these clearly in decent weather with that attic antenna - You're going to have a visitor to see exactly how you did it... :D (I'll bring a six pack as payment for the sharing of your expertise.)
dave99ag 06-24-04, 11:22 AM LOL
I checked this morning and FOX and ABC were having problems. NBC and CBS were still working pretty well. Once all this stuff clears up, I'll probably be back to KBTX and KAMU. :(
I did enjoy watching Leno though. I just have to pray for rain during important events.
mwesson 06-24-04, 11:26 AM I can picture it now. Headlines in the B/CS Eagle:
"Aggie does ritual pagan rain dance at approximately 10:20 every weeknight in his front yard so he can watch Leno in HD!"
dave99ag 06-24-04, 11:38 AM Hehe... Anything for HD!
Actually, I don't even watch Leno, but I had to see something in HD to justify the antenna to my wife. I just want to have all the networks in case there's something I want to watch.
labmansid 06-25-04, 04:58 PM So what's the latest on your new toy, Dave?
Sid
dave99ag 06-25-04, 05:35 PM I can still get NBC and CBS in really good. ABC and FOX are kind of sketchy. We'll see how things go when there's no rain in the area.
labmansid 06-25-04, 05:44 PM Yeah, those two seem to be the most troublesome of the Houston market. Wouldn't you know, the two networks we really need to pick up from out of "our" market, too!!

Sid
Yep ABC and FOX are always troublesome...... fox isnt that big of a deal because theres almost nothing on there I care about but abc has alot of sports and generally the best movies (for the big 4 networks atleast)
elspankdog 07-02-04, 12:12 AM Cox's new HD lineup made the front page of The Eagle (http://www.theeagle.com/businesstechnology/070104coxchanges.php) today, but of course, they didn't mention the flurry of local activity on www.avsforum.com.
dave99ag 07-02-04, 07:43 AM Is Cox really offering 8 HD channels for $9.95? I thought some of those were extra or premium channels.
In other news, the rain dance is still working. ;)
jagouar 07-02-04, 10:21 AM They cant offer HBO and other movie packages w/o paying for regular HBO.... part of the agreement.
dave99ag 07-02-04, 10:24 AM I figured as much. Must be sloppy Eagle writing.
jagouar 07-03-04, 08:09 PM Ok finally got a few pictures up of the redone theater.... go to my theater website and in the gallery to look.... Many more screen captures to come of games, hdtv and dvd sources.
I actually have some time to take pictures now that summer I is over and Im not taking anything summer II (need money to make up for all my "purchases")
labmansid 07-04-04, 06:11 PM Looks nice. Are those Ikea chairs? One of these days I need to get off my duff and take some pics.
Sid
jagouar 07-04-04, 07:54 PM yes they are ikea poang chairs and they need a washing but they dont look as bad as they came out in the pics....
dave99ag 07-07-04, 01:05 PM So, is anyone switching over to Cox and their HD offerings? Just wondering how the quality is.
Last night was good for me. I was able to pickup all the major networks. Watched a little bit of Method & Red on Fox. The quality was quite nice for 480p, but I didn't care for the show much. NBC appears to be the most solid channel out of Houston. The audio on CBS also seems better than KBTX.
Also, I've added a photo to the gallery of my setup. Aside from jagouar, anyone else have pics of their setups?
mwesson 07-07-04, 01:09 PM Hmmm... Still getting NBC even with no rain... I might have to go buy that six pack and come see the attic antenna...
Are you doing the rain dance? I actually got to play softball for the first time last night (6th scheduled week out of a 7 week summer season)
I will never return to Cox.
dave99ag 07-07-04, 01:14 PM Yeah, I'm kind of surprised myself. Granted I don't watch NBC much, but I do check the channels daily to see if they come in. CBS does have some dropouts when I watch CSI. ABC and Fox are still sketchy, but I guess the clouds were right last night.
The funny thing is that KAMU has been having trouble. I guess because it's the opposite direction of my antenna. I may add my little antenna to see if it comes in better.
If you ever want to come by, let me know. You'll get to see how I crammed the antenna into my attic.
mwesson 07-07-04, 01:14 PM Dave - just looked at your gallery. OakExpress? I have the exact same unit. HA! What are the odds...
Nice HD TIVO in there... You just need the SVS sitting off to one side and you are ready to go.
dave99ag 07-07-04, 01:21 PM It's actually a semi-custom unit from San Diego Furniture (http://www.sandiegofurniture.com). We bought it a few years ago when I ran out of room for DVDs and components. I'll have to go by Oak Express and compare.
No HD-Tivo yet. :( That's just the standard DirecTivo. I hoping Christmas will be good to me.
My Boston Acoustic sub is hiding inside the wall unit on the bottom-right. I have to keep the sub hidden, so my options are limited.
mwesson 07-07-04, 01:29 PM Now that I look at it a bit closer, yours is not exactly the same. But it is pretty dang close! I'd be willing to bet it's from the same manufacturer.
Same middle "expandable" shelf - same side cabinets - same lights (go on and off by touching hinge) - same top; who knows....
Looks good though - even if it isn't exactly the same, it shows good taste on your part. :D
dave99ag 07-07-04, 01:34 PM Yeah, they probably used similar designs. I opted for maple over oak. They'd never made one in maple, but now they sell quite a few of them. My wife likes the mission style furniture. That's what our bedroom has too.
I love this wall unit though. I have space for all of my components and there's still room for my DVDs. I figure I have about 2.5 rows before I'm full. My wife likes it because everything is hidden.
elspankdog 07-07-04, 02:06 PM Hey Dave, are those cat ears on the bottom right? I think I have the same cat or at least from the same litter. :p Hopefully I'll get some pics up this weekend. I'm pretty much done with the equipment/utility room. I was hoping to add a new AV receiver, but that doesn't look like it is going to happen any time soon. Maybe Santa will be good to me also.
dave99ag 07-07-04, 02:08 PM That's Graham. One of our corgis (http://www.davidriggs.com/family/landscaping/img_5730.htm).
mwesson 07-07-04, 02:14 PM oh, I think one of our B/CS members must be trying to be a smartass....
dave99ag 07-07-04, 02:15 PM LOL
I think I'm a little slow today.

Trying? According to my wife, I don't have to try very hard.
Dave, that is a nice website. Those Kauai pictures definitely made me wish I wasn't here right now.
mwesson 07-07-04, 02:25 PM Honestly, what is happening to our Astros? They seriously need to fire Jimy Williams. I don't know who they can get, but he's KILLING me. I was so excited (read: sucker) prior to the beginning of the year. After watching Miceli give up that run on Monday night in the 8th after Clemems was just brilliant... I don't think I can even turn on their games anymore.
elspankdog 07-07-04, 02:32 PM Yep, I think Jimy will be gone after the break. We're freakin' 9 games out! The bullpen has been a major letdown, but our run production has been atrocious. And to think, I was talking trash to Cub fans before the season in a WGN-HD thread. It's all my fault.
jagouar 07-07-04, 03:09 PM Originally posted by elspankdog

That wasnt smart.... I knew going in that the cubs were going to own the stros. I kinda figured this was going to happen because there were/are too many new faces and they havent gelled as a group yet.
mwesson 07-07-04, 03:14 PM Sad thing is... they are never going to get to gel. No way this team makes it through next year.
Hey, here's a bright spot to think about though... Hidalgo's hitting .471 over his last 9 games (8HR in 66 at bats for the Mets; 4 homers in 199 for the 'stros).
jagouar 07-07-04, 03:15 PM mwesson, wouldnt exactly call that a bright spot ;)
Kinda sad that the rangers are kicking ass this year and the stros suck when they were complete opposite in the preseason.
elspankdog 07-07-04, 05:13 PM As for the Cox HD quality, I saw where a local guy, ShagnWagon, was asking about the Cox HD box (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=413893). I asked him to provide us with some input.
elspankdog 07-07-04, 11:41 PM Ok, I added some pictures to my gallery. I figured I better get mine in before Labmansid blows us away with his dedicated media room.
dave99ag 07-08-04, 07:33 AM Nice setup, Brian. I see that you too have to hide your stuff.
I'm guessing that shot of Kyle Field was from that tailgating show?
labmansid 07-08-04, 09:44 AM Yeah, nice clean look in the viewing area. By the way, did you get that iron by the washer/dryer at Target? I think my wife has one just like that!! :p :p

Yeah, I used to have the sub in a closet, but I got permission to move it out once the vibrations became too much for the little lady. She would also like for me to get smaller fronts.

elspankdog 07-08-04, 12:28 PM Has anybody since the message board on the Cox sign on 29th St lately? It's kind of catchy:

elspankdog 07-08-04, 01:09 PM I really wish we had somebody here who had Cox HD. I'm interested to know if they have been passing the FSN HD broadcast of the home Astros games through on INHD. I know TWC does this in Houston, San Antonio, and Austin.
dave99ag 07-08-04, 01:10 PM Just wander on in to the Cox offices. I'm sure they have a display of Cox HD. Ask to change the channel to INHD when a game is on. :)
elspankdog 07-08-04, 02:00 PM Well, the only day game on the FSSW-HD schedule (http://msn.foxsports.com/content/view?contentId=1528343) for the month of July is the Rangers @ Indians today. I don't think I'll have a chance to wander into their office today. :(
dave99ag 07-08-04, 03:06 PM It appears that KRIV will be showing the All-Star game in HD. Guess I'll have to do my rain dance next week. :)

elspankdog 07-08-04, 03:47 PM I have some live chickens to donate to the cause. Or would a lamb be better?
dave99ag 07-08-04, 03:48 PM Heck, why not both. We shouldn't piss off the HD gods.

Munky788 07-08-04, 05:00 PM Jagouar contacted me and said you guys were interested on information for Cox HD in College Station.....well here I am! I used to have two samsung SIR-TS160's with directv; one on a sony KV34HS510 and one on a KV30XBR910. I now have two motorola HD boxes with Cox (running DVI and YES it came enabled). Surprisingly I haggled my way out of paying contract penalties with Directv. Anyway, when I went in to the Cox office in Bryan, they had a direct view sony like one of mine with their HD feed. I played with the remote and stumbled across INHD. I must say I was impressed. When I went to the counter and told the CSR I was there for my HD boxed she knew exactly what I was talking about, got them immediately, asked me if I would like component video cables with them, and even talked to me about HD!!! I was a little excited given that the response I got from a Directv CSR when I first called to activate an HD box was (and I quote), "We do not offer high defintion service sir, please contact your local retailer." Now to the quality...... I must say that the PQ is incredible. Ive already watched INHD1/2 more than I ever watched HDNET during my entire time with directv. They seem to be passing the full feed with no compression. The HBOHD feed easily meets or exceeds that of directv. When I was getting ready this morning I turned on the tube and noticed that pinocchio was on HBOHD. Despite the choice of movie, I was extremely impressed with the PQ enough to sit down and check it out for a while. The PBS feed looks as bad as it did OTA, and CBS looks as good as it did OTA. To answer your question about the baseball game......yes I was able to get it. I turned the tv on while I was eating and saw the game in beautiful high defintion. Cox corporate added starzhd so hopefully I'll see it soon here in College Station. If any of you have additional questions, post em and I'll reply ASAP.
elspankdog 07-09-04, 10:05 AM Thanks for the info Munky. So are you paying a fee for each box? I see where Cox has announced a PVR for certain markets. I think the addition of KYLE-DT and a PVR would tempt me to add Cox services, but I have too much money (HD-TiVo) tied up right now with D* to drop them outright. Maybe if I can talk my wife into a new set for the bedroom with a built-in QAM tuner, I'll get the basic service and see what passes through unencrypted. Anyone want to buy an RCA F38310 with a built-in DTC100 stb?
Munky788 07-09-04, 09:34 PM Yah I have to pay 9.95 a month for each box, but its better than investing in two SIR-TS160's. The SIR-TS160's are cheaper now but were originally 600 a pop. On the f38310, sorry but I've been there and done that. I got rid of mine while I could. I never liked the idea of having the QAM tuner built in.
elspankdog 07-12-04, 05:15 PM You got your dancin' shoes ready Dave?

jagouar 07-12-04, 05:32 PM Shame it wasnt on last night.... I was getting every single station out of houston at 100% signal.....
elspankdog 07-12-04, 05:33 PM Last night was awesome. We just need a little shower around 4:00 again.
dave99ag 07-12-04, 06:02 PM Yeah, last night was good. For some reason I even got KWTX.
I've got a few live chickens for tomorrow night, so here's hoping.
labmansid 07-12-04, 09:46 PM I have a few hundred frogs we could sacrifice, if that helps!! :p I'm watching "The Casino" right now, so maybe there is some hope. Gosh, I don't think those girls are wearing bras!
Sid
labmansid 07-12-04, 10:10 PM Switched back to the Home Run Derby on ESPN-HD, and Holy Cow, Lance went on a terror!! Way to go Lance!! Hope he can win something for the Astros. :)
Sid
dave99ag 07-12-04, 11:01 PM Yeah, Fox came in really well tonight. I too noticed "The Casino" for a bit.
mwesson 07-13-04, 10:30 AM Perhaps I've missed something, but has anyone else had problems with KAMU lately?
dave99ag 07-13-04, 10:32 AM It's been acting up for me, but I thought it was because my antenna was pointed in the opposite direction.
mwesson 07-13-04, 10:43 AM Strange. I've just been having a LOT of major drop outs lately.
I have a 2.5 year old at home - a LONG time ago I taped an episode of the Jakers (6 a.m. KAMU - really a pretty good show in HD) which he loved. We haven't watched it in probably 4 months so I erased it off the HD-TIVO.
Mistake.
Two days ago he threw a fit because I couldn't show him "his" Jakers. I've been trying to tape the show for the last two days and it tapes for about 10 minutes before stopping due to blackout.
I guess I'll have to play with the antenna and pray to the same rain gods that the rest of you have.
dave99ag 07-13-04, 10:46 AM Is your antenna pointed toward Houston too?
I've contemplated adding my smaller antenna before my preamp to see if that helps. I'm also afraid to since I'm having good luck with Houston and don't want to mess it up.
mwesson 07-13-04, 10:50 AM Nope. I don't have a big antenna - just one of the cheap, crappy Terks that sits on top of the satellite dish. However, I haven't had any major problems up until recently.
If I were you, I don't think I'd take the chance of messing Houston up. One thing I have learned with antennas (although it was a long time ago) - once you've got it good, don't change it or you might not ever get it back again.
dave99ag 07-13-04, 11:09 AM Yeah, that's my thinking. I haven't been up in the attic since I setup my antenna.
I'm guessing KAMU is just working on their setup and maybe they don't know it's causing issues.
labmansid 07-13-04, 11:31 AM Actually, I have been noticing reduced reception on KAMU in recent weeks, also. The only thing is I have done some changes in my setup about that time also, so it is hard to pin it down to something with KAMU or something I have done. I think Spankdog may have noticed something also, I'm not certain. One thing I did was to install a separate VHF antenna in an attempt to pick-up KCEN. Sometime after that is when I first noticed the problem with KAMU breaking up. Seems I had better reception on KAMU when I was using a UHF only antenna. Go figure!! :(
Sid
elspankdog 07-13-04, 12:25 PM I don't recall any KAMU losses of late, just KBTX when I moved my Houston antenna about 10 degrees. I haven't been watching KAMU that often lately though. I did however watch Soundstage with Sheryl Crow the other day with no dropouts.
As for KRIV, it was coming in pretty good at about 10:00 this morning. It was in the 85-90% range on the HD-TiVo. Chickens and frogs on standby.
mwesson 07-13-04, 01:21 PM An answer from KAMU on reception issues that might answer some questions:
"We have been participating is a test/trial of receiving PBS HD content via Internet 2 instead of satellite. So far this has been somewhat problematic. The goal was to gather real world network perfromance metrics over a time period. This test will end next week. When things get real bad we switch back to satellite although this is not automatic. I trust the problems will go away that you are experincing. We have not had any transmitter problems other than an AC power outage in the last couple of weeks."
labmansid 07-13-04, 02:02 PM Maybe, just maybe....

elspankdog 07-13-04, 03:38 PM Ok, I'll change the subject. I finished up the entrance to the equipment room (http://gallery.avsforum.com/showphoto.php?photo=8613&sort=1&cat=500&page=1) (aka the garage) last night. Let me know what you guys think.
mwesson 07-13-04, 03:44 PM Say, is that a gray and white igloo? I think I have that exact same igloo... sorry, couldn't help it and I know it is getting old...
That garage is a little too neat for me (but very well done). Hope you don't ever want to sell the house to someone not from Texas...
dave99ag 07-13-04, 03:56 PM That's a pretty sweet HT setup you got there. ;)

Believe me, that picture was a one time thing. There's a big pile of "to be put in the attic" stuff to the right. I'm waiting for Dave to come over and store it. I'm also sure that whoever moves in can convert the flag to a Puerto Rican or US one. They're just lucky I did the star instead of an aTm.

dave99ag 07-13-04, 07:41 PM How many chickens do I need to kill because I'm not having much luck with the signal right now. :(
jagouar 07-13-04, 07:56 PM Same here... but I normally dont start getting signal till the sun goes down.
elspankdog 07-13-04, 07:57 PM Not looking good right now, but it looks like the signal has improved over the last thirty minutes (from around 20% to 40%). Maybe it will be viewable a little later. I have a call in to Sanderson Farms.
dave99ag 07-13-04, 07:57 PM That's what I'm figuring. Well, at least we might get the later innings in HD.
I'm finally at least getting something, but it can't lock on at all.
elspankdog 07-13-04, 08:33 PM Looks like that last chicken did the trick.;)
labmansid 07-13-04, 08:38 PM The frogs were getting nervous, but they are safe for now! :)
Sid
dave99ag 07-13-04, 08:38 PM I had Chick-fil-A for lunch. Maybe it's finally working.
labmansid 07-13-04, 09:32 PM I even had a spicy chicken sandwich from Wendy's for the effort.
dave99ag 07-13-04, 09:44 PM I haven't much luck the last 30 minutes. I may just call it a night and switch over to SD. :(
labmansid 07-13-04, 09:54 PM Yeah, I'm getting occasional breakups, but except for one blackout that lasted about a minute about 30 minutes ago nothing major.
jagouar 07-13-04, 11:00 PM Overall it was pretty spotty till about 30 mins ago.... Now is pretty much pegged at 90%
Looks really good PQ wise.... now we just need to get kyle to upgrade, I want my NFL in HD come fall.
dave99ag 07-13-04, 11:21 PM Just tuned back in a bit ago and things are working better again. I kept myself busy by playing some NCAA 2005. :)
elspankdog 07-14-04, 12:06 AM It got kind of spotty in the middle, but overall it was good for me as far as Fox from Houston goes. As for KYLE, I wouldn't hold my breath. I'm counting on the Sunday ticket, and I'm clueless as far as blackouts go.

How are the Ags this year?

Sunday Ticket brother! At least half the NFL games in HD. I used to never think I would pay that money, but once you've got it, it is tough to go back.

Not too bad. Courtney Lewis and Terence Murphy are badass. The only thing I'm bummed about is that the highest resolution is 480p.
elspankdog 07-14-04, 10:41 AM I was going to ask the same thing. Did you win the MNC Dave?
dave99ag 07-14-04, 10:44 AM I stopped after Clemson. I think I logged about 6 hours on it yesterday. This should hold me over until the season starts. Hopefully we'll get to see the opener in HD.

If espn gets the opener in HD, Ill have to accelerate my VOOM plans ;)
dave99ag 07-14-04, 10:58 AM You don't get ESPN-HD right now?
The most recent listing is August 27th, so we're getting closer to knowing.
http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tvlistings/espnhd/index
elspankdog 07-14-04, 10:59 AM You beat me to it Dave. So close I can smell the fresh cut grass.
mwesson 07-14-04, 11:10 AM Actually, they have now named the USC/VATech game on Sat. 28th as HD.
Keep in mind, they did their Sat. night games in HD last year, but none of their Thursday night games. I'm hoping that changes...

I thought they did at least one Thursday night game in HD. It was a Miami game. I know it was on the HD schedule last year.
dave99ag 07-14-04, 11:16 AM They must have just updated after I posted. That game should be fun to watch.
mwesson 07-14-04, 11:17 AM Maybe so, but I don't remember it. I just remember being frustrated that the Thursday night games were not HD. It didn't make sense to me that they couldn't do that.
On a side note - do any of you guys attend boards/forums on A&M athletics? (recruiting, general happenings) If so, which are the best ones?
Does anyone know why this track coach (phenomenally successful) from LSU would come here? Are we paying him ungodly amounts of money or what?
elspankdog 07-14-04, 11:20 AM www.texags.com
I haven't been following the track story other than the fact he is coming. I know Dollar Bill is into the competition for best overall athletic year for all sports (Sears trophy?).
dave99ag 07-14-04, 11:20 AM TexAgs is my main place. I subscribe to the M&W Report and like it quite a bit. Lots of good inside information.
We are probably paying him a decent amount. Byrne isn't messing around and he's bringing in some very good coaches. I sure hope things get better b/c ticket prices sure took a hit on me.
elspankdog 07-14-04, 12:16 PM Hey mwesson, it didn't take long. Move over Jimy, here comes Phil.
mwesson 07-14-04, 12:24 PM That is outstanding. I like Phil. I was in Detroit during part of his tenure as Tiger manager and like him a lot. (Of course, he was in an unwinnable situation in Detroit.) Hopefully, he'll be the type of fiery manager that can help turn some things around.
labmansid 07-14-04, 02:12 PM Hey, maybe this will light a fire under KYLE!! Yeah, right.

Nope not right now.... I have base level dish (top 60). Im not happy with either of dish' or direct's future hd offeringe and Ive already had both so Im done with the switching after 6 months when one service trumps the other in the HD dept.
It looks to me atleast that vooms primary selling point is HD and lots of it which is why I am moving to them, plus their dvr will own all other dvr's.... But since I just finished my theater redo (and didnt run a component cable to my pj, no dvi on the old piece of crap). But I will move pretty soon, shouldnt be too expensive to get a 40 ft cable and run it. All I have right now is OTA with my antenna and accessdtv.
labmansid 07-14-04, 04:15 PM Well, if the Ags do end up on ESPN-HD maybe one of us will take pity on the "poor college student" and let him watch on one of our setups! :)
Sid
elspankdog 07-14-04, 04:28 PM Oh, don't worry. He has friends with ESPN-HD - Munky being one of them. He just won't be able to watch it on that big screen of his.
jagouar 07-14-04, 04:42 PM Well as soon as they get scifi Im most likely going to switch...... If epsn ends up getting the game in hd and I dont have voom by then Im going to have dish and voom for a while. SCIFI is the most important channel for me to have because I dont miss a stargate episode. Well since it comes on friday nights I should say replay doesnt miss a stargate episode ;)
I usually watch it as soon as I get home friday night too... I know Im a stargate geek, so what.
elspankdog 07-15-04, 11:01 PM Anyone notice a lot of macroblocking (I think that is the word for it) on KAMU lately? I watched a little bit of Soundstage with Alanis Morrissette tonight, and it was especially apparent on the shots with a lot of motion. What gives?
jagouar 07-16-04, 12:19 AM No macroblocking on the 5 mins i watched.... but I lost kbtx for some reason tonight.
On a related note, I got a few hdtv/pc screen captures on my website gallery. I had some texags caps as well but they all came out blurry,
mwesson 07-16-04, 10:16 AM I posted this back on page 17 - who woulda thunk we'd be on page 19 by now? KAMU is having difficulties based on the way in which they are receiving their signal. Hopefully the problems will go away sometime next week. Below is an e-mail I got from them -
"We have been participating is a test/trial of receiving PBS HD content via Internet 2 instead of satellite. So far this has been somewhat problematic. The goal was to gather real world network perfromance metrics over a time period. This test will end next week. When things get real bad we switch back to satellite although this is not automatic. I trust the problems will go away that you are experincing. We have not had any transmitter problems other than an AC power outage in the last couple of weeks."
labmansid 07-16-04, 10:17 AM Yeah, I noticed KBTX going out during CSI. Had to turn to the Houston station. Didn't check this morning to see if it was back.
dave99ag 07-16-04, 10:19 AM I never checked KBTX last night during CSI. I think KHOU sounds better, so I try to watch CSI on that channel.
elspankdog 07-16-04, 10:20 AM I noticed it back on sometime after 11:00 last night.
labmansid 07-16-04, 11:03 AM Just found out this morning that the ranks of HD veiwers in B/CS increased by one (family, that is) this week. A co-worker told me her husband got the HD box from Cox on tuesday to go along with their new WS TV they got a few months ago. She hasn't watched it that much but said of course her husband and kids are pretty impressed by it.
Sid
dave99ag 07-16-04, 11:06 AM I noticed that Best Buy is using Cox HD for all of the HD screens. At least people will get to see HD and not just a DVD loop.
jagouar 07-16-04, 11:12 AM Well I ordered my 50 ft component cable so I will be ready for voom :)
I am getting ready to move my computer desk out anyways to go from my single 21 to dual 19's so this was the only time I would have to run the component cables.
On another note I think its interesting that pbs is using inet2 to send hd feeds... Maybe even one day we can bypass kamu altogether and get the signal straight off the interent. Doubt that would ever happen but its interesting nonetheless.
elspankdog 07-16-04, 11:18 AM So you're going to get Voom before Sept 2? What are going to use their antenna credit for? Or do they do that? ESPN-HD is up to Aug 30 on their schedule. Hopefully we'll know soon about "the game".
dave99ag 07-16-04, 11:20 AM You should tell Voom that you want a better antenna. The installers will probably crap their pants. lol

I should :)
Actually I may request them to just leave the antenna or put it up so I can have one for just kamu and kbtx where I wouldnt need to move mine... Since there is a grey area right where houston stations come in the best that kbtx doesnt come in at 100% and it will occationally drop so I have to move it about 5 degrees and its up to 100%. Or I could just sell it or give it away to somebody locally.
Either way I will be getting voom pretty soon but it will be as late as possible until they announce the tamu game in hd or not because they still dont have scifi and the new episdodes of stargate and stargate:atlantis are airing so I really dont want to lose it.
elspankdog 07-16-04, 11:34 AM That's the same problem I have with KBTX/Houston. My TiVo missed Everybody Loves Raymond on Monday because of some dropouts. I already had my antenna moved for maximum reception for the All Star game out of Houston.
elspankdog 07-16-04, 01:46 PM Hey jag, I noticed you had an F38310 in your first theater. The saga to get mine fixed/replaced continues. Tuesday, the guy from CC came out and replaced the capacitors with some higher rated ones (a known problem). All seemed well until this morning. That's when the same problems I had before reappeared. The unit won't power on unless you unplug it for a short time, and then once on, it freezes up in a fury of pixelation. I guess I'll be calling CC again. The rep I spoke to before said that I could get a credit if they have to fix it 3 times. They can't replace it since it is discontinued. Personally, I would like a credit. I could use it for a smaller bedroom set and toward a new receiver (HK or Onkyo). Did you have any problems with your set?
jagouar 07-16-04, 02:24 PM Nope, I sold mine to my dad and its been fine for him. I will say this no tv has matched the HDTV quality of that set to date.... Shame they discontinued it because when I graduate college I was planning on buying it back and putting it in as a main living room tv and have a proper dedicated theater. But if dvi and whatnot takes over I dont want it ;)
FYI, Munky788 had a 38310 from circuit city and his broke as well.... you might get some better info from him.
elspankdog 07-16-04, 02:29 PM Do you know if he was able to get his money back or a credit?
jagouar 07-16-04, 02:46 PM I beleive it was only a credit but Im not sure... I know he got another tv from there.

Thanks, I figured I might as well get some pics while it was cleaned up a little. I had a guy come down yesterday from Waco who was asking on the Home Theater Spot if anyone had a SVS PB2-Plus he could audition. I guess I was the nearest one around. elspankdog 07-19-04, 02:55 PM Well, I'm posting because I'm still excited about this morning's announcement. Hopefully, we can somehow squeak out a win, so I can keep the game on my HD-TiVo forever. The first Aggie game/win in HD. It's gonna be tough.

labmansid 07-19-04, 05:13 PM Then I might feel sorry for you!!
elspankdog 07-22-04, 12:17 AM Looks like KWKT-DT 44-1 is in the D* guide now, but its redhead stepchild station, KYLE-DT still isn't. At least if it was in the guide, I could try to tune it every once in a while. Right now, I can never get it to scan.
That's two Waco stations (Fox and PBS) that have been added or corrected since I've been emailing Tribune/www.zap2it.com, and our PBS is still screwed up for some people (12-1/2 and 15-1/2) and we have no KYLE-DT.
elspankdog 07-22-04, 06:29 PM Well, I got an email response from a KYLE engineer today (can you believe that?) in response to questions about the addition of the digital station to the D* program guide. He didn't understand what I meant (he thought I was thinking D* would be carrying KYLE-DT), but he did let me in on some information. He said that D* would not be carrying KYLE as a local for the Bryan/Waco market, and they would only be carrying KWKT. Not that KYLE has local news or anything. He said this was D*'s decision. Interesting to see if they carry other locals such as KAMU.
Woo-hoo! Just got an email response from www.zap2it.com concerning the KYLE-DT addition and the KAMU-DT problems. This is a first after several emails. They said it can take up to 48 hours for a change to go through their system. Maybe something will finally happen.
elspankdog 07-23-04, 11:06 AM Well I got a followup email from KYLE concerning the listing of their digital channel on the D* program guide, and I got more bad news than I wanted. Looks like KYLE-DT's signal won't get any stronger or be in HD until the final analog to digital switchover:
Due to restrictions by the FCC on interference to adjacent markets on our
KYLE-DT transmitter (Channel 29), we were unable to apply for maximization and at present we are simulcasting standard definition on our digital transmitter at 1000 watts.
We plan to move the station to channel 28 and broadcast in high definition
at the end of the digital transition when the analog stations are required
to shut down.
As a result, we do not provide separate listings to the listing services for
that station.
I went on to reply and ask if they would consider granting us waivers for the D* FoxHD feeds later this year. We'll see if they change their stance on waivers. :(
dave99ag 07-23-04, 11:09 AM Waiver? We don't need no stinkin' waivers. ;)
mwesson 07-23-04, 11:10 AM That is not good news. I can't say it's not expected, but nonetheless disappointing. Hopefully D* will give us the FOX HD feed out of O&O Houston.
dave99ag 07-23-04, 11:15 AM Anyone with Houston locals should be getting FOX-HD East (I think) when it goes live in September. That's the biggest reason why I won't switch to the local market when D* offers it. The #11 market is much, much better than the #93 market.
elspankdog 07-23-04, 11:16 AM Originally posted by dave99ag
Waiver? We don't need no stinkin' waivers. ;)
I know, but I was looking out for other less adventurous viewers in the area. Here's their response concerning waivers:
Waiver rules do not apply to high definition broadcasts. As far as I know
there is no procedure defined regarding cable or satellite broadcast of high
definition signal for either broadcasters or networks.
I'm not really sure how to interpret this response.
mwesson 07-23-04, 11:20 AM Interpret it as.... NO.
elspankdog 07-23-04, 11:24 AM Thanks professor. Much better interpretation than your one on their financial status. :D
mwesson 07-23-04, 11:30 AM on the other hand, he could mean that they haven't made a decision yet, so the possibility is still open.
How is that for changing my response to the Academic answer. :D
elspankdog 07-23-04, 11:44 AM I wonder what the adjacent markets that KYLE (ch 29) would interfere with are?
labmansid 07-23-04, 11:44 AM I don't think he really understands the question or our concerns.
dave99ag 07-23-04, 11:46 AM Maybe boosting the power would cause issues with the Waco FOX.

Aha... Now I see what the problem is!! They don't want to interfere with the other station on channel 29!! Silly me!! It all makes sense now!! See here (http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/tvq?state=TX&call=&arn=&city=&chan=29&cha2=29&serv=DT&type=0&facid=&list=1&dist=&dlat2=&mlat2=&slat2=&dlon2=&mlon2=&slon2=) why they can't broadcast at over 1kw. jagouar 07-23-04, 03:52 PM Well, Voom was ordered today..... should be getting it installed on 8/2 which will give me a month to figure out how to work it before my tamu/utah outdoor party ;) (privided the weather cooperates)
elspankdog 07-23-04, 04:08 PM I assume you're gonna need our addresses. You know for invitations and all. ;)
ps - Don't you dare turn this into a Voom thread. My fellow HD leaders, I mean D* subscribers, and I will have your a%#!
mwesson 07-23-04, 04:15 PM Abilene!!!! You've got to be kidding me. Surely that's not why...
labmansid 07-23-04, 04:28 PM Well, those are the only two DT stations on that channel in the state. Maybe there is something else interfering (I remember KCEN had trouble with the hospital in Huntsville at first), but he didn't elaborate, and I smell a cover-up. Where is Ken Starr?? :D

you do realize you have to be the HD leader first right ;)
I was kinda dissapointed with Audio/Video though... I went there to see if they had it (since they are listed as an authorized retailer) but they said they havent received the package yet.... You would think they would be ontop of this. Im actually looking forward to seeing the news in HD (they showed a clip on the voom demo channel at sears).... Sears had a box to show and get into the menu but only one channel was active (again a shame) because I wanted to see what the SD channels looked like compared to dish... dish is already pretty bad so Im I get a slight improvement.
the demo channel did look pretty good even when sears had the voom box on the crappiest tv there, had all kinds of picture problems... it looked horrible on the loop they ran and voom still looked pretty good so Im hopeful it will be good.
As for the invitations, Well your welcome to stop by (I have a feeling you will be using your tivo to instant replay thgouh) although Id rather have that tivo ;), well I take that back, Id rather have my projector over a hdtivo..... Hopefully the weather will cooperate because the plan right now is to put some kind of screen in the driveway screw it on to the front of the house and have people bring lawn chairs and sit in the driveway do a block party type of thing. Again this is all dependent on the weather......
labmansid 07-23-04, 05:17 PM Jag, which way does that wall face? If I climb up on my tower will I be able to watch the game on your projector?!?!
:D
Sid
elspankdog 07-23-04, 05:19 PM Wow, that's gonna be a unique experience. Good luck on the weather. Maybe Dave can hold off on his dancing for a week.
Of course, I have my own shindig in the works. I plan on picking up my kegerator tomorrow. My biggest dilemna will be what type of keg to buy for the game. Decisions, decisions.

I ordered it online, the guy at sears encouraged me to get it online since he didnt know how the rental fee worked (sears just sold the system), he said there wasnt anything for me to buy so I ordered online... One interesting tidbit is in their guide they say Im supposed to be able to get KCEN outta waco... My big antenna being UHF only doenst tune it very well at all so it would be nice to get that channel when KPRC isnt coming in which happens more than Id like.
Theyre supposed to keep coming back with bigger antennas till I get it, well see how that goes ;)
dave99ag 07-23-04, 05:53 PM It must where you're located because I get KPRC in almost all the time with my attic antenna. Are you down in a valley or something?
elspankdog 07-23-04, 05:54 PM Same with me. KPRC is usually more reliable, but it is nice to have a backup.

Its generally good but ~30% of the nights I don get a stable signal.... I live in the lowest part of the city which is why Im guessing even with my antenna its still a bit low. Right off 2818 near bee creek park.
JoshuaT 07-24-04, 04:03 AM How are the D* people in College Station getting locals or HD in this market? Are you applying for waivers or setting up your account from a houston address, or what? Any tips for a D* noob?

Can't wait for Aggie Football '05, WHOOP!

I use an antenna for networks and have a Houston service address to get Houston locals. D* will be adding FOX-HD this fall and only owned & operated stations will get it. Houston has FOX and ABC as O&O's. They're also the #11 market and D* will probably offer local HD channels down the line. If you wait for D* to add our local market, Waco/Temple/Bryan, none of those stations are O&O.
labmansid 07-24-04, 09:57 AM Joshua, do you live in the B/CS area? Most of us have put up various antennas/towers in order to get OTA HD stations out of Houston, which still is not usually completely reliable. At present setting up service out of Houston has no real advantage as far as getting more HD on D*. That will change, as Dave mentioned, this Fall when D* adds FOX-HD feeds. About the only waivers you can get now in B/CS are for NBC, maybe ABC if you are lucky. That is a big reason several have "moved" to Houston, over a dozen local channels available to Tivo, plus KNWS 51 for sports.
Dave, you sure are up early today!! Or were you just up late??:D
Sid
dave99ag 07-24-04, 10:13 AM Just up early. I had to migrate a mail server to a new IP address and wanted to do it before people started complaining.
elspankdog 07-24-04, 10:40 AM Pretty much what Sid said.
KBTX (CBS) and KAMU (PBS) via antenna.
Houston HD locals via big antenna and weather permitting.
Houston SD locals via D*.
Soon to come FoxHD East and West via D*.
mwesson 07-24-04, 11:09 AM Joshua T, welcome. I think you'll find the answer to your question as you read through this thread. Are you in the B/CS area?
You can get KBTX (CBS) and KAMU (PBS) reliably over the air using a relatively cheap antenna. A number of people in this group (me not being one of them) have erected rather large antennas and can fairly reliably pick up some Houston or Waco HD over the air (mainly NBC and Fox).
Many in this thread have "local" Houston addresses as service addresses so that they can get Houston local stations via D*. In the future, it is likely (although not guaranteed) that D* will start broadcasting network feeds in HD to those who either qualify for distant networks or live in cities where the stations are owned and operated by the network. In Houston, this means ABC and Fox.
Supposedly, by the end of the summer, D* will start delivering local channels to the B/CS area. However, there is no chance any of these will be HD.
I think you can get most general questions answered by reading the thread from the beginning, but if you have any specific questions we would love to help you out as that is what this forum is all about.

And I thought I typed slowly!! Of course we have better things to do. Watch some HD, just not that early in the AM!! I didn't think anyone else was online when I got up, otherwise I would have answered earlier (well, maybe not as early as Dave :D ).

elspankdog 07-26-04, 10:47 AM Anyone else planning on getting the Sunday Ticket? This is the last week to catch the discount. I'm starting to get cold feet after reading all the stuff lately concerning blackouts (Cowboys).
dave99ag 07-26-04, 10:49 AM No Sunday Ticket for me. I'm not a huge NFL fan, so I'll just enjoy the HD games Fox and CBS bring. I keep busy enough with college football to keep me happy.
I also get NBA League Pass for Spurs games, so that's enough big D* expenses for me.
mwesson 07-26-04, 10:54 AM Started paying for it a month or two ago as a renewal. I NEED it. I HAVE to have it. I CANNOT live without it...
elspankdog 07-26-04, 11:00 AM I think I'm in the same boat as Dave. I love me some college football. My wife just can't fathom how I can watch football from 10:00 am to midnight on a "beautiful" Saturday. I was willing to do the Sunday Ticket this year in order to get all the Cowboy games in HD, but from what I've been reading concerning blackouts and O&Os, it doesn't look good.
dave99ag 07-26-04, 11:03 AM I'm pretty much just Aggie football, but I do enjoy watching any other good games. I will probably watch more NFL than I normally do due to HD. It depends on how much my wife will tollerate. ;)
elspankdog 07-26-04, 11:05 AM I probably won't watch as much NFL now that Ricky retired.[/sarcasm]
dave99ag 07-26-04, 11:07 AM The NFL died for me when Ricky shaved his dreds.[/sarcasm]
mwesson 07-26-04, 11:47 AM Ricky must be smoking some really good grass over there in Hawaii. Honestly, given how much of a leader he has supposedly been during the offseason - to do a 180 like that... He has definitely got some screws loose up there (not that we didn't already know that).
jagouar 07-26-04, 12:06 PM Well being a student I could honestly care less about NFL.... it just doesnt seem as real (when do you ever see those guys cry when they lose to a rival). So Sunday Ticket is no loss for me.
elspankdog 07-26-04, 12:29 PM The NFL has lost some of its luster with free agency and parity. Guys like Ronnie Lott, who had his finger cut off during a game and kept playing, are few and far between.

What the NFL did was pull a NBA/MLB and have the primary driving factor be $ and not the game.....
mwesson 07-26-04, 12:47 PM You guys are crazy. The NFL is the fastest growing hot commodity in all of sports. MLB, NBA, NHL are all going down in revenue, fanbase, etc. while the NFL continues to grow rapidly.
I agree wholeheartedly with you in that I strongly prefer college football to professional football, but I can't live without the NFL (as opposed to easily being able to live without MLB or the NBA - not that I do, of course :) )
I think in the end, we will all owe a debt of gratitude to the NFL as they seem (or at least their coverage) to be pushing the HD boundaries for us. Once they are done broadcasting football, all those cameras and HD trucks have to be used for something...
elspankdog 07-26-04, 04:31 PM What's up with www.texags.com? Did I miss something?
dave99ag 07-26-04, 04:40 PM They're having DNS issues.

So, do you remember if the Cowboys games were blacked out on ST if shown on our local? That is pretty much our only hope of seeing Da' Boys in HD this year, but if they are blacked out I don't know if it's worth it. How would you like to add a receiver or two to your account for a few months?? :D :D

I wish I could tell you. I just don't remember. I have grown up hating the Cowboys my entire life (born and raised in Houston) so rarely do I go out of my way to watch them and I never choose any of them for my fantasy teams because I don't want to pull for them. Their having Dat Nguyen and Bill Parcells has absolutely been killing me because there are now small parts of me that want to root for them.
That being said, I don't even remember any of the SD games ever being blacked out last year (including the Texans when they were on KBTX), but I simply might not remember - HD was never an issue and I always could have just flipped channels. However, keep in mind that we didn't have locals via D* last year. IF we have local channels by the Fall I would suspect it would become easier for D* to tell if our local channel is covering a particular game.

Hopefully there is more good news coming soon for HD'ers from D*. The suspense is killing me!!
dave99ag 07-27-04, 08:28 PM That's some pretty good news. I get NBC pretty good, but it'll be nice to have a fallback for the Olympics. I'll be really happy if they add ABC. That's the one station I have the worst time with.
labmansid 07-27-04, 08:43 PM Yup, me too. Think MNF, among others.
elspankdog 07-27-04, 11:09 PM Might be time to take the tower down (yeah right!).
Fox O&O = FoxHD East & West
ABC O&O = ABCHD East & West
NBC "grandfathered" waiver = NBCHD East & West (we'll see)
CBS = KBTX
PBS = KAMU
The Big 4 in HD reliably - never thought I'd see it happen. Not even in 2006.
dave99ag 07-27-04, 11:10 PM How can you get a waiver for NBC if you have Houston locals?
Dallas is the ideal market, but I don't think we can pickup their spotbeam from here.
elspankdog 07-27-04, 11:21 PM I had an NBC waiver before I "moved" to Houston. After the move, my NBC East and West distant feeds stayed on. I've kept them as part of my programming for this possible waiver scenario. I don't know if I'll get the NBCHD feeds. I'm afraid if they don't just come on, they might get deactivated if I have to call and explain I have a waiver.
labmansid 07-27-04, 11:40 PM Same here. After I moved, I still get NBC E/W. Hope when the HD feeds come they get turned on automatically.
elspankdog 07-28-04, 12:04 AM Anybody notice anything screwy about KAMU? Just looked on my Zenith stb, and I had 12-1, 12-2, and 12-3. 12-1 had no picture, 12-2 was the HD feed, and 12-3 was the SD feed.

Haha, knowing direcTV they will drop your local before they add any new hd chans, they usually check to make sure only qualified people get it (part of the agreement usually). You can hope but I wouldnt expect too much.
elspankdog 07-28-04, 12:12 AM KYLE-DT is in the guide too. Who can get the first screen shot?

Does the SD station info screen with the KYLE 28 and KYLE-DT 29 count? ;)
God I dont know how Im going to make a whole week until VOOM installer shows up..... Ive pretty much already read all the forums dealing with VOOM (the leader in HDTV, elspankdog ;) )
mwesson 07-28-04, 10:19 AM Figures that we can now get guide information for stations we can't receive (KYLE) and can't get guide data for stations we generally can (KAMU).
I'll believe NBC-HD when I see it. They took my NBC feed away when I added Houston Locals. That would freakin' figure. I could switch back to national NBC/ABC feeds through waivers I guess - but the reality is that those will go away once they give us B/CS locals and leave me without FOX. Sticking with Houston would give me ABC and Fox, but leave me in the lurch with NBC...
Ah, the trials and tribulations of not having a freakin' giant huge-ass antenna in my backyard...
labmansid 07-28-04, 11:00 AM You could try your attic.

If I had the HD-Tivo a couple of months or so ago when it was coming in that night, I could have saved some!!
Sid
mwesson 07-28-04, 11:02 AM I tried my attic with one of those giant antennas from Radio Shack. However, I'm not sure I did it right with the amplifier and everything.
I might have to give it another shot here in the future...
labmansid 07-28-04, 11:07 AM Does your roof have that foil-looking heat-shield layer in the attic?
Sid
mwesson 07-28-04, 11:09 AM I don't think so, certainly not that I remember, but the reality is that I need to check again.
elspankdog 07-28-04, 11:13 AM I think they are doing something with KAMU, I just don't know what. It now shows up as 12-2 and 12-3 on my Zenith stb, but on the the HD-TiVo, it remained as 12-1 and 12-2. Of course, they've been running that "regular schedule" marathon for quite a while. :(

mwesson 07-28-04, 05:23 PM I still don't understand all of this and all 3 threads I have seen really have no clue...
NBC O&O HD feed of the Olympics
Bravo HD feed of the Olymics
Special NBC HD feed of the Olypics
Nobody know what is really up yet.
All I know is that I lost the "waiver-national" feed when I moved to Houston, and I have no idea what's going on. I guess things will firm up over the next several days, but certainly we will watch SOME of the olympics in HD - although ALL of it will be delayed by up to 24 hours.
dave99ag 07-28-04, 05:47 PM From what I gather, NBC is going to have 8hrs of HD Olympics per day. This will be offered to O&O stations. The have also struck a deal with D*. I'm guessing this will allow D* HD subscribers to also view this coverage on 84. After the Olympics, NBC-HD will be adding the way CBS and FOX are done.
For us D* Houston viewers, we'll get to see the Olympics in HD, but won't get the national feed unless we have an antenna.
I am happy that Bravo-HD will be added. There appears to be some decent programming on there.
elspankdog 07-28-04, 06:02 PM So the HD leader finally has some news. Do we have any chickens left for INHD?
