View Full Version : Waco / Bryan, TX - HDTV
elspankdog 09-03-04, 12:26 PM Despite the loss, the game in HD was fun. I love showing people HD for the first time. They usually say something like, "Man, those plasmas have an awesome picture." I'll then explain to them that it is the source, and that their rear projection ws big screen can look just as good. I had some people that were in shock when I switched over to the Cowboys game at the half. That was the picture they were used to on their sets. We'll see if any of them buy a new set or get an HD box by the end of the month.
jagouar 09-03-04, 12:39 PM plasmas are for idiots who have those sweet money trees ;)
its all about fp. Its always fun to see the closeups look like at pretty much life sized.

dave99ag 09-03-04, 02:10 PM I don't know what's worse, losing in HD or in SD. At least with SD you don't see all the mistakes as clearly.
Tough loss last night.
Just FYI about DVR service in Bryan from Cox:
"Thank you for your inquiry regarding our new services. We apologize the
DVR service is not available in the Bryan, TX area.
We are just as excited as you are about our new product and services.
Unfortunately, we do not have an availability date to offer you at this
time. Please know that we are working as quickly as possible to bring
the new services to the local market."
Oh well ...
labmansid 09-03-04, 04:34 PM Sounds like they use the same "canning" company as D*. ;)

elspankdog 09-06-04, 06:32 PM According to this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=4304273#post4304273), KWKT, KYLE's parent station, will be granting distant network waivers to people in the North Austin area with a grade B signal for FOX-HD on D*. I think this is usually not bad enough for a waiver. Maybe, anybody that still lives in south CS with a grade B KYLE signal (http://directvdnseligibility.decisionmark.com/app/AddressEntry.asp) should give FOX waivers a try.
labmansid 09-06-04, 07:47 PM That would be sweet. Decisions, decisions....
Sid
dave99ag 09-06-04, 07:57 PM I think I'm going to stick with Houston. ABC is still one station in Waco that I couldn't get and D* will add them eventually. FOX-HD should be coming online soon too.
I've considered even "moving" to Dallas where all the stations are O&O, but I like having the Houston news.
mwesson 09-07-04, 11:04 AM Here's some questions....
1) Are we in the Dallas spotbeam?
2) If one currently has waivers for distants in College Station (NBC and ABC) - when they add the local channels, will we still be able to receive the distant (i.e. HD) feeds?
If not, staying in Houston is a no brainer.
If so, it really creates a dilemma - CBS OTA for sure - stay in CS and get NBC and ABC distants (hopefully soon HD) or stay in Houston and get ABC and FOX (hopefully soon HD).
dave99ag 09-07-04, 11:14 AM 1) It appears that we are: http://www.scottandmichelle.net/scott/dtv.html
2) Hmm, good question. I'd imagine so because you'd be grandfathered into it.
Other than switching to Dallas, Houston works best for me.
The two O&O's in Houston are the two stations I have a hard time picking up. CBS and NBC are easy for me to pickup out of Houston.
One bonus with Houston is that they'll be in the first wave of HD locals via D*. Don't expect the Waco/Temple/Bryan market anytime soon.
labmansid 09-07-04, 11:41 AM Yeah, I agree, the Houston stations work best for me, too. I could possibly "move" again to a relative's place in the middle of nowhere to get ALL the network feeds, but I do like some of the Houston stations. Come on FOX and ABC on D*!!

I would think you would still have the distant feeds. This is based on the fact that Sid and I still have ours in a market with locals. Right now, I don't think they look at those things too carefully. The question is, will the HD feeds cut on automatically for us waiver folk or will we have to call which could jeopardize the waivers?
If you already the HD feeds which should be live before CS gets locals, one could add the CS locals via the D* website when available. This way you wouldn't have to speak to a csr who might realize what is going on.

Yeah, but I think that is a fluke. When I moved to Houston the CSR took my distant feeds away saying that I didn't qualify for distants while in Houston.
Perhaps I should just call D* and see what they say... anonymously of course.

Well, you better disable Caller ID before you call, then!!;)
elspankdog 09-07-04, 12:42 PM So mwesson, do you have any waivers right now?
mwesson 09-07-04, 12:53 PM Depends on your point of view. As a current Houston resident, no I have no waivers. However, prior to moving to Houston, I had waivers for NBC and ABC.
I just spoke to a D* CSR (the brains that they are) and this woman told me that IF you had the NY/LA feeds and locals then came to your area, you would be eligible to keep the NY/LA feeds.
(When I moved to Houston, a pretty knowledgable CSR explained to me that if I moved back within 6 months I would not have to reapply for the waivers - they would automatically come back to me. However, if I was gone longer than six months... I would have to reapply all over again. I just don't know how KCEN will handle waivers once they are on D*'s local package. Feasibly, they didn't have to grant one to begin with - so I am hesitant to lose it now.)
Given that I don't have a giant-ass antenna and am not likely to get one - I think my preference would be to have CBS, NBC, and ABC in HD rather than CBS, ABC, and Fox. (Since I'm getting Sunday Ticket, the Fox game in HD is not that big of a deal to me and I don't really watch any other fox programming.)
Ah... the dilemmas of moving, and moving back, and moving, and moving back...
dave99ag 09-07-04, 02:26 PM Was anyone watching CBS KHOU 11-1 last night? I think they forgot to flip the "switch." Everybody Loves Raymond and Two & a Half Men weren't in HD.
I'm not sure if CSI was because I switched over to KBTX for that. I always try to watch 11-1 over 3-1 when I can because it sounds much better.
elspankdog 09-07-04, 02:54 PM OK m, now I remember your situation. If I were you, I would go ahead and activate those distant waivers before they add the CS locals (I wouldn't trust that 6 month thing once we have locals). Also, I seriously doubt KCEN will be as lenient with waivers as they have been in the past since they now have their HD feed on Cox and D* and E* will have their analog.
You should also get all the FOX HD games via ST in CS. So if you can live without MLB, Arrested Development, and the WB, it looks like you are all set.
ABC - via D* with waiver
CBS - OTA
FOX - OTA (lol), NFL via ST
NBC - via D* with waiver
PBS - OTA
WB - see FOX

Actually, yes, I noticed that also. I thought about calling them, but I didn't want to pay for long distance. ;) It was like that all evening, although I didn't really watch anything on KHOU for long, I was watching women's tennis on Bravo-HD mostly. :D
elspankdog 09-07-04, 03:39 PM Well if it happened last week during Two & a Half Men, I definitely would have had to call. ;) That supposed 16 year old would land me in jail.
dave99ag 09-07-04, 04:33 PM lol
I told my wife that I thought she was a pornstar. She's not, but is 18. HD was nice that night.

neuendri 09-08-04, 11:42 PM I've noticed lately that KBTX-DT OTA has some dark bands that float from bottom to top on the screen while I'm watching the news, etc. I've experienced this with analog before, but didn't think digital was susceptible to interference. I suppose it could be from the source.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Richard
labmansid 09-09-04, 12:03 AM I've seen that, too. Probably something to do with their production before it gets sent on-air, whether analog or digital. Maybe you could call and at least let them know we notice it.
dave99ag 09-09-04, 09:26 AM http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=443890
"The first two of these satellites, Spaceway 1 and Spaceway 2, will launch in 2005 with programming being offered to consumers by the middle of the year. These satellites will have the capacity for more than 500 local HD channels. With these satellites, DIRECTV will have the ability to bring local HD programming to most of the U.S. population, as well as continuing to expand standard-definition local offerings and other enhancements."
I can handle that timeframe and it even makes more sense now to stick with Houston. Our local market probably won't see HD until 2007 via D*.
mwesson 09-09-04, 10:39 AM Yes, but you could always move back to Houston when the time comes. IF locals are really going to be here on 9/28, I am sorely tempted to come back to College Station (assuming I can hold on to the previous waivers).
I would much rather receive NBC and ABC in HD than ABC and Fox. Plus, it certainly sounds like NBC will be up and running way prior to ABC.

If you really want ABC-HD from D*, Houston may be your only option. When I moved from town a year ago, I had to reapply for waivers, and that time I was turned down, presumably by KRHD, our "local" ABC (ironic that they have HD in their call-sign, huh!!). The only distant "waiver" I still have is for NBC, and only because D* didn't catch it when I "moved" to Houston a few months ago. For that reason I am pretty anxious to see if I get NBC automatically when it goes on D* in HD, or if they catch their boo-boo and cut me off except for the KPRC-SD feed.
Sid
mwesson 09-09-04, 02:40 PM Hopefully I won't have to re-apply and they'll just give me the ones I had (NBC and ABC). When locals go online with D*, I'll be interested to see if NBC continues to grant them...
elspankdog 09-09-04, 07:49 PM Not looking good right now for the first "Monday" night game. Hopefully, it will improve before 8:00.
dave99ag 09-10-04, 07:40 AM I wasn't have much luck before 8pm either for Thursday-MNF, but it was coming in good after 8pm. I watched it off and on during CSI and then fully at 9pm. No breakups at all. I was very shocked.
elspankdog 09-10-04, 10:52 AM By the time the pregame show came on, it was coming in pretty well. I was able to watch the entire game virtually dropout-free. Did anybody catch when they mentioned the Mike Renfro "imcompletion" vs the Steelers and the lack of instant replay? That brought back some bad memories.
jagouar 09-10-04, 05:18 PM any of you guys watch the new reduced bw channels on D* yet?
Showtime HD at a whopping 6.5 mbit
and
HDnet movies at 7.8
and people give voom sh!t about its channel bw.... (voom runs anywhere from 12-16 mbit, depending on the program)
dave99ag 09-10-04, 05:20 PM I only get HDnet Movies, but I'll try and take a look when I get a chance.
elspankdog 09-10-04, 05:38 PM HD Leader hater! So when did they start the reduced bandwidth? The last flicks I watched were The Wall on HDNet Movies and Step into Liquid on Showtime HD, so it has been a couple of weeks. Both of those movies looked ok - well the usual D* HD picture I've grown accustomed to.
So is anybody going to watch the KBTX pregame show tomorrow? I'm sure it will be an HD production. Too bad KAMU doesn't do one.
jagouar 09-10-04, 06:07 PM just so you can compare, KAMU runs at 12 or 14 mbits (I dont remember from the last time i emailed them).... so you can imagine how bad d* might look.
That being said all the D* users better get used to 3 chans per transponder if the chan numbers d* has planned. I see no way they can get the # they have planned no matter how advanced the new sats are..... theyre gonna have to move most of their stuff to a 3 transponder system.

If they fail, they fail... Id still be with voom, no way in hell Ill ever go with directv if they keep this crap up. And theres really no way id ever get a HD tivo if i had to pay 1000 for the damned thing... atleast voom will have a rent plan on theirs when it comes out (and from whats being reported on satguys that going to be sooner rather than later)
mwesson 09-10-04, 06:54 PM Just ragging on you man. We are all a tad jealous at the moment. Hopefully (for us) the "HD-Leader" will catch up at some point.
Some of us didn't pay for our HD-Tivo's. :D :D :D :D
Cool.
jagouar 09-10-04, 07:04 PM I know... Ive learned some things in my years (and beleive it or not Ive been at this HD sattelite thing longer than most of you).... And the one thing Ive learned is NEVER buy equipment.... and that was the biggest reason I went with voom was for its rent thing. I switch way too much to buy equip. Hell Id much rather go crawling back to cox before Id go to direcTV and buy their equipment (if they rented id much rather go dbs but I will never buy equipment again)... atleast receivers. Stuff just changes too much to be stuck to a single service. I learned alot from my dish 6000.
And howd you manage not paying for that HDtivo? (hell illl buy one for free ;) )
mwesson 09-10-04, 07:10 PM I legally can't really say, but perhaps you can tell by my witty poem below...
Before I had a digital video recorder
Everyone seemed to have something I didn't.
They pissed me off.
And then I realized I actually had something special first!
(I realize starting the last sentence with a preposition is a little awkward, but I found it NECESSARY if you catch my drift.)
jagouar 09-10-04, 08:20 PM hey just to rub it in a bit more to the "HD leader" wannabes, nascar looks awesome in HD tonight on TNT-HD ;)

labmansid 09-12-04, 09:17 AM FOX News Sunday looks pretty good in HD on KYLE-DT...NOT!! Actually it looks good on KRIV out of Houston. I just hope KRIV comes in this well later this afternoon, but I'm not holding my breath. :( Looks like FOX HD won't be on D* today, either. Oh, and KRIV is lighting up my "blue light" for DD5.1. :)
labmansid 09-12-04, 01:07 PM It looked for a second that KBTX was going to show the Steelers/Raiders (in HD) game, but switched to the Texans/Chargers (in SD) at the last second. Kind of ironic that the Chargers abbreviation is "SD". I hope the Texans do well this year, if nothing else so they get more games in HD!! ;)
elspankdog 09-12-04, 03:34 PM It's not looking good for the Cowboys in HD for week 1. I'm getting nothing from KRIV. Guess mwesson will have to tell me how it looked (I know he will be watching the Boys). Also, why didn't KRIV carry the early Fox game, but KYLE did?
labmansid 09-12-04, 03:41 PM Originally posted by elspankdog

Probably in case the early game ran long (which they usually do) they wouldn't be obligated to keep showing it, and that way they could start showing the Cowboys as soon as it starts. KYLE just doesn't give a $h!t.
Sid
labmansid 09-12-04, 03:55 PM I think the Love-Bugs must have attacked a transformer at Reliant Stadium!! The power went out for a couple minutes, and now they are talking about opening the roof.
labmansid 09-12-04, 07:35 PM KRIV has been coming in pretty well now for most of the 4th quarter, though by then it almost hurt to watch what was happening. :( Picture looked damn good to me, audio on commercials was waaaayyyy too loud compared to rest of game.

No luck picking it up here.:(
Randy Moss - 5 career games vs the Cowboys = 10 TDs. Ouch!!
jagouar 09-12-04, 07:47 PM I havent watched a single game today... watched some of the texans earlier but all in all not much good games on today after what happened yesterday... tamu/wyoming, ttu losing, sips shoulda lost. Although Im much more of a college football fan than pro.
Thats prob the reason im not a d* humper for sunday ticket ;)
mwesson 09-13-04, 10:37 AM Couldn't get the Cowboys in HD. Game was blacked out. (I'm assuming this is because I'm in Houston now.) If I was a Cowboys fan, I'm not sure I would have wanted to see that game in HD...
All the other HD games looked pretty damn sweet - What was it, 9 games in HD yesterday (counting ESPN)? Would have been another one if Miami/Tenn would have stayed on Sunday.
Arkansas should have won that damn sip game. That would have been some kind of sweet. Mack Brown is such a dumbass coach. The only really good thing is that the Longhorns will go an eternity getting all hyped up just to fall short to teams that have better coaching.

I watched a good part of that game, and came away feeling the same way, UA was definitely the better team.
mwesson 09-13-04, 10:55 AM It dumbfounds me that Matt Jones (QB) is the ONLY returning offensive starter from last year on that team. (Of course, he is a big starter to have back... but still...)
elspankdog 09-13-04, 11:15 AM Finally caught some Cowboys in HD via Sportscenter, and in HD, you can really see how ugly that field is in Minnesota. Good thing is that they are on KBTX in HD this week. I just hope the Browns return to their old ways.
As for the Ags, my outlook for the season was pretty dismal following the Utah loss, but after watching other Big XII teams struggle this week, I've regained some of my optimism. Hopefully, we can fill Kyle up this weekend.
elspankdog 09-13-04, 11:33 AM Woo-hoo! Looks like we'll also get the Texans @ KC (http://www.sportsline.com/cbssports/schedules/page/nfl) on Sept 26 in HD on KBTX.

elspankdog 09-13-04, 11:22 PM Any luck getting MNF tonight? Not much luck here; very sporadic.
Looks like we'll find out about the D* NBC waiver thing on Thursday. NBC E/W (ch 82 and 83) are listed in the online program guide starting in the am.
labmansid 09-14-04, 10:20 AM I was able to watch MNF on KTRK, with pretty frequent drop-outs though. Good thing I wasn't really into it, or I might have had to switch to the SD version. All of the Houston stations had drop-outs last night, I noticed. I was going to Tivo LAX, but decided not to due to the breakups.
labmansid 09-16-04, 07:59 AM WooHoo!! Getting the NBC-HD feeds on D* on 82 and 83!!:D :D :D

elspankdog 09-16-04, 08:37 AM Same here. Glad I didn't have to call. Just Fox and ABC to go.
dave99ag 09-16-04, 09:00 AM That's good to hear y'all are getting NBC. I'll just have to wait for FOX and ABC in Houston. Luckily NBC comes in really good for me, so I'm not too bummed.
Does anyone get guide data for KRIV 26-1? I get data for 26-2, but not the main channel. This is with a Samsung 360.

I get 26-2 only on both the HD-TiVo and my Zenith stb. I didn't know there was another channel.
dave99ag 09-16-04, 09:45 AM Hmm. I've always watched on 26-1. Maybe I should try 26-2 sometime.

There are a couple of great match ups in the SEC this week. LSU @ Auburn should be a good one too.
Monday should be entertaining also. Go Vikes!
dave99ag 09-17-04, 08:20 PM I'm flipping through the channels this evening and I've stopped on KAMU-DT. It appears that there's some local programming in HD. It's boring as hell, but the picture looks fantastic. The show is "TV Magazine with Suzan ???".
I wasn't aware that KAMU had HD cameras. I thought they only had 480p 16x9 cameras. Maybe we'll see more local HD events on KAMU.
labmansid 09-19-04, 04:15 PM I wish they would quit showing the tail end of all these games on CBS!! Let's get on with the 3:00 game! To make matters worse, KBTX couldn't seem to decide whether to show us the end of the Titans/Colts in SD or HD, very annoying.
labmansid 09-19-04, 06:20 PM Hmmm... I might have to update my Gallery with some screen-shots from the Cowboys game today. And I DON'T mean of Vinny!!! :D
jagouar 09-19-04, 07:33 PM Game looked pretty good but you can tell the stadium is really getting old and crappy.....

labmansid 09-21-04, 11:33 PM It was breaking up too much for me, too. Looked good when it was coming in though. Good God, the Astros game looks horribly fuzzy tonight!! I'm getting spoiled on HD programs this season. :)
elspankdog 09-22-04, 10:53 AM Ch 51 on D* can make Cox look good at times.
mwesson 09-22-04, 10:59 AM FYI... I'm back as a citizen of B/CS and am contentedly watching NBC in HD over D*.
elspankdog 09-22-04, 11:45 AM Glad to have you back...I mean sorry to see you go. Have you noticed any audio sync problems on NBC West yet? The other night during Las Vegas it was irritating (and that show's dialog is the best  ).
labmansid 09-22-04, 12:02 PM I have noticed the video on the NBC-East feed drops out for a second periodically. Anyone else have that?
mwesson 09-22-04, 12:22 PM I have not watched the west feed on a regular basis.
Last night, the one second dropouts on the EAST feed were significant in my opinion (L&O SVU) and came in every 30 seconds or so. I'm really hoping this was just a flukey night.
labmansid 09-22-04, 12:41 PM Yeah, that's the show we were watching with the dropouts.
labmansid 09-22-04, 12:48 PM Apparently D* has some bugs to work out.

elspankdog 09-22-04, 11:14 PM Anybody else catch Lost? Got most of it off of KTRK on the HD-TiVo. Only an occasional drop out. The sound was pretty d@mn good. Because of the story, the show might only be good for one season, but at least I'm looking forward to next Wednesday.
labmansid 09-22-04, 11:38 PM I Tivo-ed it also while catching up on some shows from earlier in the week, hope I didn't get too many drop-outs. I turned to it a couple times to see how the reception was, but didn't actually watch it. Looks like my Tivo will be busy this season!!
mwesson 09-23-04, 10:57 AM Did any of you watch Law and Order last night? Did you get that purpleish band (filter, for lack of a better word) across the top of the screen? Due to my TV I have 0% overscan so I was always worried about getting weird stuff on the top or bottom of the picture and last night was the first time it has really happened to me.
Nope, but I caught CSI:NY last night. Came through almost perfect, with just a few pops here and there. Looked beautiful and the DD5.1 was flawless.
CSI:LV on tonight, hope it's the same.
Marc
jagouar 09-23-04, 01:24 PM Any of you guys catch lost last night? I downloaded the HDTV rip this morning and was pretty impressed as it was pretty good, I heard the video and sound were really nice, the rip is nice but nowhere near real HD and there was no way I was going to watch this in SD.... its really sad when a HDTV (compressed) rip is better than live SD.

Yep, ABC definitely does DD 5.1 the best. ;)

Why the F*vck would espn want this bludgening of a game?
elspankdog 09-23-04, 05:19 PM Mizzou and Troy State would have been a better match up. Who would have thunk it?
elspankdog 09-24-04, 06:17 PM Posted this on another site, thought I'd share it here. According to KBTX's sister station in Waco, there is a chance KBTX could be added to D* the 27th this month. However, they aren't for certain, and of course, it was supposed to be added earlier this summer.
mwesson 09-24-04, 06:25 PM Strong rumor has it that all our locals will be up on 9/28.
http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=32047
Plus a CSR told one of my friends who just got D* that locals would be up by the end of the month.
That specifically is one of the reasons I've moved back to B/CS - to hopefully guarantee that my distant feeds grandfather in.
elspankdog 09-24-04, 06:28 PM lol, nice new sig.
elspankdog 09-26-04, 05:05 PM Well, according to this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=4372058#post4372058), KWKT-DT, KYLE's parent station, is available on TWC in Temple/Killeen. A later post also indicates that they're possibly doing the NFL in HD today. I wonder if KYLE-DT is anywhere close to being added to the local Cox HD lineup.

If that happens, will you become a Cox salesman?? ;)
mwesson 09-27-04, 12:36 PM Looks like locals on D* will not be coming tomorrow (on indefinite hold). Then again, these were never officially announced either. I guess this is why D* doesn't announce stuff until it actually happens...

elspankdog 09-27-04, 06:40 PM Got some news concerning KYLE-DT today. This is the most optimistic response I've ever received.
KYLE's splicer
KWKT/KYLE is in negotiations with FOX in regards to whether they'll supply a splicer for KYLE. Without it, no HD, and they cannot purchase one without FOX's authorization.
KYLE and Cox
KWKT is exploring getting the KWKT-DT signal to Bryan so that Cox could carry it. Since there is no requirement that Cox carry KWKT (KYLE is the Bryan FOX station), they strongly suggested viewer requests for FOX-HD to Cox.
They also mentioned that they would do whatever they could to serve viewer interest within the limits of their FCC authorization.
dave99ag 09-27-04, 09:02 PM MNF is coming in good tonight!
jagouar 09-27-04, 09:23 PM Correct me if Im wrong but wasnt fox "giving" out the splicers? I may need to shoot off a PM to foxeng on the HDTV board and see if he knows more. I would love to get fox here locally, then we could just work on ABC and NBC ;)
We still should take up an "increase the power" fund for KYLE ;)

Yup, so far so good here, too, only a couple of minor breakups. I hope reception is this good Wed. night for "Lost".

Won't do us much good if they still aren't passing HD. :(

Translation: We're screwed. For one thing, if they are just in negotiations, it will probably be a long time to get one from FOX after everyone else is taken care of, and I bet KYLE/KWKT doesn't have the resources to just buy one "off the shelf". Besides, I was told some time back that KYLE would probably get HD before KWKT, and what happened to that?

And who among us will that help? What we need is to pester them to do what is inevitable and bring their station up to speed and quit jerking us around with their light-bulb powered station.

Is that why, even though they are passing HD in Waco/Temple, KWKT is still broadcasting at the same power as KYLE, so nobody can get it unless they have cable?
[Rant mode off]
elspankdog 09-28-04, 12:53 AM Man, you guys are brutal. I just said that the latest news is better than the past. The last time they responded to me, they said HD would not happen until the digital transition end. At least (or at least they're telling me), they are trying to get a splicer for KYLE and trying to provide FOX-HD to the area (albeit via Cox). The power issue is a non-issue until they're at least doing HD. Hopefully, they will be leniant with waivers for CSers such as mwesson.
BTW, I only experienced three breakups during the game tonight, and I think Roy Williams was responsible for two of them.
elspankdog 09-28-04, 12:55 AM Forgot to mention, that was one impresive triple quote breakdown Sid!
mwesson 09-28-04, 10:54 AM I sent an e-mail yesterday to KWKT begging (yes, literally, begging) for them to give me a waiver with the promise that I'd drop it once they started broadcasting KYLE-DT at a power level that I could receive.
Not that I expected anything different, but their reply was:
"I sincerely wish that I could give you a waiver for FOX HD feeds on direct TV, but since the FCC rules regarding Satellite waivers do not differentiate between Analog and Digital television, a waiver would also apply to the KYLE-TV analog broadcast signal and subject us to fairness litigation from other Direct TV viewers.
By policy since we have been notified by Direct TV that they are beginning local-into-local service in the Waco-Bryan market for KWKT FOX44 within 30 days, we must decline all waiver requests within our area of dominant influence from this point in time on to be fair to all Direct TV viewers. "
I thought it was pretty interesting that D* has told them they are going up in lil within 30 days. I don't know when they received that notification, but hopefully the postponement of locals here isn't moving past that 30 days.
elspankdog 09-28-04, 11:15 AM ...subject us to fairness litigation from other Direct TV viewers...
I find this hard to believe since the other D* HD users in the area will be getting FOX-HD via the Houston O&O route.
In regards to the splicer, is it possible that FOX only provided one splicer per DMA? And since we live in this jacked up tri-city 90 mile DMA, we're now sol. I'm interested in hearing what foxeng has to say jag.
jagouar 09-28-04, 11:53 AM Yeah I was going to ask him sometime today.... Because we really are in a grey area.
I honestly wouldnt be suprised if KYLE doesnt even know they can possibly get the splicer free.
jagouar 09-28-04, 03:16 PM If any of you care heres the response from foxeng.... whoever has the inside contact with KYLE should send this to him.....
First off FOX isn't selling the splicers. They are sending them to stations free of charge. The equipment remains property of FOX though. The splicer is a properity based device. The only way you can get one is through FOX.
The only requirement for a station to receive a splicer is to be providing a 720p stream to plug into the splicer, nothing else. The 720p stream doesn't even have to have true HD on it, it can be 480 upconverted to 720 24/7. I do know that FOX is trying to get as many on line as quickly as possible and it will more than likely take until first of the year to make that happen for all of the affiliates who are eligible.
FOX owns several low power stations (mine being one of them) and we received our splicer so power level has nothing to do with it. If the station doesn't have a 720p stream up and running FOX will not ship one. It is that simple.
labmansid 09-28-04, 05:40 PM What I have a hard time understanding is if FOX supplies the splicers, which we already knew they do, why didn't KYLE get one the same time KWKT did, since the installers were already in the area? Unless there is a limit per DMA of some sort for now? I wonder just what is involved with supplying the 720p stream they are talking about.
elspankdog 09-28-04, 05:52 PM I got some clarification:
Network FOX considers KYLE to be a satellite/translator station of KWKT that just simulcasts. However, the FCC considers KYLE to be a full power FOX affiliate. Until they get the designation changed with FOX, KYLE is not eligible for a splicer.
I guess this is just another wonderful nuance of the translator/low power DMA we reside in.
labmansid 09-28-04, 05:53 PM Anybody got some Vasoline, 'cause I feel it coming!! :(

dave99ag 09-28-04, 06:29 PM I love living in Aggieland, but damn, the TV market sucks here.
labmansid 09-28-04, 10:35 PM Yeah, but I guess it could be worse. And it is gradually getting better.
mwesson 09-29-04, 10:57 AM Well, good news and bad news.
Good news: Locals for B/CS on D* should be up on Oct. 12.
Bad news: It looks like we are going to have to have another satellite dish to receive the signal. (i.e. the triple LNB’s we already have plus one more 18 inch dish). I’m sure DirecTV will install this for free, but what a pain in the ass given that we won't get HD off of it…
http://www.solidsignal.com/satellite/localmarket_01.asp
elspankdog 09-29-04, 12:33 PM What a freakin' pain in the @ss! I already have two HD dishes and the tower. If I move back, it's gonna look like I'm running my own TV station.
mwesson 09-29-04, 12:44 PM I will say, having NBC in HD over the satellite has been pretty sweet. This really has turned into a no win (without a large pain in the ass) situation though with the locals/waivers/extra dish.
Pardon the change of subject....
Another true story from our wonderful friends at Cox.
I placed a call to 846-2229 to inquire about the HD-DVR coverter boxes.
"This is Lauren, how may I help you?"
"I'm checking to see if you have the HD-DVR available in Bryan, TX yet?"
"Yes sir we do."
"Can you verify this for me please?"
"One moment sir"
"Yes, they received the units last week. All you will need to do is to take your current HD converter in and swap it for the HD-DVR converter."
"Excellent, that's what I'll do."
So, I go home for lunch and unhook the converter box (no easy task) and take it into the Cox location here in Bryan.
"We don't have DVR service available yet, it won't be here until October 11st at the earliest"
"Well, Lauren on the phone told me it was available, so I went home and unhooked everything to bring up here."
"The people who answer the phones are new, they don't always know what they're talking about."
"Well, that's a given. Thanks."
Another true story from Cox Communications, "Your Farce in the Digital Age!"
mwesson 09-29-04, 01:16 PM HAHAHAHAHA! All these memories are flooding back to me...
It's just a damn shame so many people have to deal with them and have no other choice. I do wonder what things would be like if we had two cable providers in town both competing against one another. Too bad that will never happen.
dave99ag 09-29-04, 01:22 PM Cox freakin' rules!

I agree whole heartingly with you.
Just for a goof, I'm going to e-mail support and see what response I get. I bet it will be something different.
elspankdog 09-29-04, 08:14 PM FYI, I updated the first page (not that any of the veterans read it). Looks like KTRK is doing ok tonight - so hopefully another episode of Lost in HD will record. Now back to the 'Stros.
labmansid 09-29-04, 09:01 PM No dropouts during "Lost" tonight for me! :) What a suspenseful show!!
Now I can watch the Astros full time tonight. Oh, wait maybe check on the Giants once in a while later.
labmansid 09-29-04, 10:12 PM Ishman, I think you should post that in it's own thread on the HD Hardware Forum!! :) Too funny, except for all the trouble it cost you. Cox must get the reject CSRs from D*. ;)
labmansid 09-29-04, 10:43 PM All right Astros!! Come on Padres!! :D
elspankdog 09-29-04, 11:01 PM I guess the silence is broken. Looks like we have nothing but nail-biters the rest of the way.
elspankdog 09-30-04, 12:02 AM Ok, Lost won me over for another week. How could it lose with the underwear shot? The picture is simply awesome. I wish all of you could get ABC.
labmansid 09-30-04, 12:18 AM Yeah, Kate is hiding something intriguing in more ways than one!! :D
mwesson 09-30-04, 10:56 AM That chick is brutally good looking.

elspankdog 10-03-04, 08:46 PM Whew! What a weekend. Looks like the 'Stros got stuck with the crappy start times again (at least for us that work). Maybe ESPN will make a miraculous change in plans and do the first two games in HD.
labmansid 10-03-04, 09:44 PM Hey, at least they got into the playoffs!! :D :D Or are we not supposed to talk about it? I never doubted they could do it!
mwesson 10-04-04, 08:16 AM I doubted, but man am I happy they are there!
jagouar 10-04-04, 09:41 AM Screw the stros, how about that A&M game? looks like we may actually have a team this year.
dave99ag 10-04-04, 09:42 AM There's still a lot of football to be played, but it is looking much better.
We're also putting together a very nice recruiting class.
elspankdog 10-04-04, 12:00 PM Things are definitely looking better, but that game got way too close at the end. The game in Stillwater will show us a lot. BTW jag, will Voom have Saturday's PPV game?
mwesson 10-04-04, 12:12 PM Oooh. That is a good question. Will D*? I don't think I've ever ordered pay per view from them before.
dave99ag 10-04-04, 12:13 PM I'm pretty sure D* will have the game. People on TexAgs have said they've ordered PPV games from D* before.
labmansid 10-04-04, 12:19 PM The defense does seem to have gelled quite a bit since that first game. :)
elspankdog 10-04-04, 12:49 PM D* should have it. I bought games last year.
dave99ag 10-04-04, 09:36 PM Anyone having problems with KBTX? I can't get a signal at all.
labmansid 10-04-04, 09:40 PM I was just about to post that, too. Maybe some lightning got 'em. How is KTRK coming in? Getting fairly frequent dropouts here.
dave99ag 10-04-04, 09:42 PM I'm watching KHOU and getting a fair amount of breakups.
labmansid 10-04-04, 09:46 PM SD is like Cox!!
labmansid 10-04-04, 09:58 PM OMG, Miss Pasternak is so ........ Sorry, I just had to throw a glass of ice water on myself!:)
dave99ag 10-04-04, 10:02 PM Cold shower needed? ;)
I called KBTX but got no answer. Maybe KHOU will come in ok for CSI: Miami.

dave99ag 10-04-04, 10:08 PM I just tried engineering, I didn't try to get Daryl Bruffet or Bob French. :)
elspankdog 10-04-04, 10:54 PM MNF is coming in pretty good now. Just for kicks, I tried KXXV out of Waco at the half, and it was coming in ok. No KYLE-DT though.
labmansid 10-05-04, 10:59 PM Anyone else getting FOX out of Houston?? I've been watching the ball game on KRIV since I got home from bowling, no dropouts so far. :) Looks pretty good, especially the score right now.;)
labmansid 10-05-04, 11:07 PM I was thinking the PQ on the game wasn't quite up to snuff for HD, and checked the thread about the games on FOX. Sure enough, tonight's game isn't in HD. I hope they can get the HD feeds going as long as the reception holds up!
elspankdog 10-06-04, 12:07 AM I tried KRIV early in the game with no success. Looks like the 'Stros will have to make the NLCS for us to get some HD (that's if D* adds FOX-HD by then).
elspankdog 10-06-04, 10:42 PM So Lost came in one more time. I wonder how much longer my luck will continue. Dave, have you been able to catch this show in HD?
labmansid 10-06-04, 10:50 PM KTRK wasn't coming in for me; I turned to KXXV before it started, and had some dropouts then, and no DD 5.1 :( Well, did you finally get to watch the Astros game? I wish the Twins would go ahead and put away the Yankers tonight!
elspankdog 10-06-04, 11:00 PM Got to see the game. Woo-hoo!! There were some dropouts though. The D* screen came up once and mentioned sunspots and possible interference. Thanks for letting me enjoy this one. Tomorrow I'll probably do the gamecast thing.
dave99ag 10-07-04, 07:32 AM I tried watching it, but had no luck. I was even having issues with KHOU last during the CSIs. Man I can't wait for HD LILs.
dave99ag 10-07-04, 06:32 PM I just noticed that KHOU and KBTX both list Survivor as HD tonight. I've never watched the show, but I thought it wasn't HD. Maybe just a glitch I guess.
elspankdog 10-08-04, 12:12 PM Definitely a glitch. Honestly, I don't know how this show still gets good ratings. Aside from the All-Star season, it has gone downhill. The people they select now are horrible.
labmansid 10-08-04, 12:27 PM Maybe the "HD" stood for Horribly Degenerated!!:p
elspankdog 10-08-04, 12:53 PM Here's the HD Football for this weekend:
Sat Oct 9
Tennessee @ Georgia 2:30 - KBTX-DT
LSU @ Florida 6:45 - ESPN-HD
Sun Oct 10
Giants @ Dallas 12:00 - ST, D* FOX-HD East (fingers crossed)
Vikings @ Texans 12:00 - ST, KRIV-DT
Lions @ Falcons 12:00 - ST
Raiders @ Colts 12:00 - ST
Dolphins @ Patriots 12:00 - ST
Panthers @ Broncos 3:00 - ST
Cardinals @ 49ers 3:00 - ST
Rams @ Seahawks 3:00 - ST, KRIV-DT
Bills @ Jets 3:00 - ST, KBTX-DT
Ravens @ Deadskins 7:30 - ESPN-HD
Mon Oct 11
Titans @ Packers 8:00 - KTRK-DT
Interesting weekend; there is no way to get the Boys in HD unless D* adds FOX-HD this weekend (KRIV is showing the Texans at the same time). Also, it's too bad ABC doesn't do any college football in HD. They have some great matchups this weekend.
elspankdog 10-08-04, 01:03 PM BTW, who all is going to shell out $29.95 Saturday?
dave99ag 10-08-04, 01:04 PM I'm providing the game. My friends are providing the food and beer. :)
elspankdog 10-08-04, 01:18 PM Same here except I provide the beer also. Damn kegerator!
dave99ag 10-08-04, 01:19 PM Sometimes I wonder if my friends like me for me or my TV. ;)
labmansid 10-08-04, 01:40 PM Uuuhhhh.... You may not want to know the answer to that question, Dave!! ;)
dave99ag 10-08-04, 01:50 PM I'm taking all my toys and going home!
labmansid 10-11-04, 12:17 AM Don't know if anyone here has heard this yet but looks like FOX-HD is going to be on D* starting the 12th, or this Tuesday!!:D :D
Look at channels 86 and 87 (http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/BasicSearchAction.do?search_criteria=&zip_code=&start_date=20041012&start_time=0600&time_zone=est&channel_type=all&category=00%2C01%2C02%2C03%2C04%2C05&year=2004&sort=viewer_channel&date_display=Tue+Oct+12&time_display=6%3A00+-+8%3A00&m_display=AM&timezone_display=Eastern&time_frame=&timeframe_display=)
WooHoo!!!
dave99ag 10-11-04, 07:54 AM Hopefully the 'stros will win so we can see them in HD. :)
elspankdog 10-11-04, 10:36 AM Watching them lose in SD was bad enough. I don't know if I can take any more losses like the last two in any resolution. :(
labmansid 10-11-04, 01:53 PM Well, the 'Stros better win tonight so I can watch them in Ultra-HD Saturday!! ;)
In continuance of my previous Cox story....
I called again today (It's Oct. 11th.. the promised date of the DVR) and this is what they told me:
"I'm sorry sir, it currently isn't available. I also show that it won't be available until the end of November."
I just hung up... bunch of Cox...
elspankdog 10-11-04, 04:59 PM I guess I'll have to update the first page. Maybe I'll just list TBD as the DVR arrival date. Those dang Cox suckers!!!

I get the feeling that Cox must have left a bad taste in your mouth!! :p :p
elspankdog 10-11-04, 05:08 PM Ptew, ptew!!
mwesson 10-11-04, 05:13 PM We have hit a new low.
However, that must be exactly what it feels like when dealing with that company. Not that I would know though or that there is anything wrong with that.
elspankdog 10-11-04, 05:17 PM lol. That same line crossed my mind.
elspankdog 10-11-04, 05:38 PM Does anybody know if KBTX ever cut the HD feed on during the Bills/Jets game yesterday afternoon? I know it wasn't on at first, and I figured one you guys would call them so I went ahead with my nap.
mwesson 10-11-04, 05:44 PM I called them during the 3rd quarter and the guy in master control said "We're not showing that in HD." I said, "I know you aren't showing it in HD however the fact that you are broadcasting it is keeping me from watching it in HD on DirecTV. Why don't you go check, I bet you are receiving it in HD from CBS and all you have to do is flip a switch." He said, "OK" and 10-15 minutes later it was in HD. Amazing.
In the future, you can call KBTX on the weekend - just keep hitting the buttons that take you to "master control" - it's like 3-4 menus in, but you can get there.
elspankdog 10-11-04, 05:51 PM I always just go to the sports dept, and they always take care of it (wake the guy up in the control room) no problem.

Just getting down to Cox's level. ;) When I first heard about them testing cable modem's in the area, I got all excited and put my name on a list of theirs to signup as soon as it was available. Well, of course I didn't find out it was here until everyone else who reads the paper or watches TV found out, and of course got in the long line. Then the guy who finally came out to hook it up pulls up in an old beat-up Chevy Nova ( no pretty Cox Truck), reaking of cigarette smoke, and has to make a few trips to his car for "tools" (cigarette break). Once it got going, every time it went down they blamed my computer, until they finally saw a problem on their end (oh, sorry). So, that's just one reason I feel free to bash Cox.
mwesson 10-11-04, 06:22 PM FYI... D* locals have been pushed to 11/2. Sucks, but at least they are coming I guess. It's about time.

Cox office in Bryan reports the DVR *might* be available by the end of this month.
I plan on writing the district manager of Cox a formal written complaint regarding this issue. I feel that the mis-information I've received over the past month has been used in an attempt to keep me as a customer, ESPECIALLY when other options are present (Tivo, ReplayTV, DTV, etc.)
We'll see how he/she responds, if I get a response at all.
labmansid 10-11-04, 07:16 PM Well, I hope you will be getting one soon, even if it is not a Tivo. A DVR is one of those gadgets I don't know how I did without after I got one. I LOVE it!!:)
I already have a ReplayTV and love it. However, it's a pain in the ass to setup with the digital converter, so it is only used for analog stations.
Since most of my TV viewing involves the digital and HD channels, I am kind of out of luck. Plus, 4.95/mo is a lot cheaper than 12.95/mo.
So, I guess we'll see...
dave99ag 10-11-04, 10:17 PM Ishman, did you get you're cable modem with Cox or TCA? I never had any issues with TCA, but it all went to crap when Cox took over.
labmansid 10-11-04, 11:13 PM Must... Hold.... Back!!
dave99ag 10-11-04, 11:19 PM KRIV and KHOU are both coming in very well tonight. I'm really enjoying the 'stros game in semi-HD. My wife asked if it was in HD. Damn that Fox Widescreen.
Guess we'll see what FOX-HD looks like tomorrow night. I haven't seen any since the All-Star game.

Actually, our apartment complex is hosted by Agnitek with a 10.5mbs pipe. I've been quite pleased with it. It was blazing fast until all the students came back from summer break. I still get about 1.5 - 3.2mbps up/down.

Looks much better than KYLE-Ovision!!:D
labmansid 10-11-04, 11:33 PM WooooooHoooooooo!!!! Finally!!! Astros put 'em away!!
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D
labmansid 10-11-04, 11:35 PM I have a date next Saturday, and her name is Minute Maid!! :)
labmansid 10-11-04, 11:58 PM Hmmm.... I have been having trouble getting KTRK (ABC) to come in tonight. I get plenty of signal, but shows searching for signal on screen. Weather Radar was coming in, but not the game. So I did a rescan in hopes of fixing it, now nothing from them. But I did notice something else. Now it looks like KHOU is multicasting, with analog on 11-2 and another radar on 11-3. Interesting....
Correction, looks like 11-2 is a news type subchannel, not an analog version of regular programs, at least for now.
labmansid 10-12-04, 12:50 AM Here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=452612) is a thread that may be of interest to us.
elspankdog 10-12-04, 01:14 AM Cool thread. Finally, a non-TWC Houston thread.
labmansid 10-12-04, 01:30 AM So, did you watch the entire game from Tivo? Can you get KTRK?
elspankdog 10-12-04, 01:39 AM I listened to it on the radio, and then relived the glory via TiVo when I got home. I didn't get to see the KRIV picture.
KTRK isn't coming in for me. It says the signal is good, but no picture. I haven't tried a channel rescan.
elspankdog 10-12-04, 09:07 AM I was hoping to wake up to FOX-HD this morning. But what do I get, no FOX, and KTRK still has no picture for me.
dave99ag 10-12-04, 09:10 AM I was getting KTRK pretty well last night after CSI was over. I never checked before then.
Hopefully FOX-HD will be fixed by tonight's game. We'll need KRIV to come in good on Wednesday as we should get Yanks/Sox on FOX-HD.
labmansid 10-12-04, 09:12 AM Yeah, I checked for FOX this morning, too, but nada. I did notice my receiver has a phone call scheduled for later this morning, though, maybe it will be there then.
dave99ag 10-12-04, 09:30 AM I logged onto my DirecTV account and I see this in my Programming Service:
Network: FOX HD_*
I was worried that I might need to call, but I guess I won't have to.
elspankdog 10-12-04, 10:01 AM It's listed under my programming also. That's a little good news.
elspankdog 10-12-04, 09:00 PM E* sucks!

labmansid 10-12-04, 11:19 PM OK, just checked the FOX thread, now I understand.
elspankdog 10-12-04, 11:24 PM KRIV is trying to come in. Love that DD 5.1.
labmansid 10-12-04, 11:31 PM Yeah, I had to fiddle with aiming the antenna some, but it's coming in now! :) Also, I just checked KTRK and it looks like a go!!:D
elspankdog 10-13-04, 02:42 PM Well, it's official! Cox now lists KCEN-DT as part of its digital lineup (http://www.cox.com/texas/includes/systems/sys-brya.asp). I should be getting an email shortly saying it is now available.
dave99ag 10-13-04, 02:44 PM No ABC or FOX?
elspankdog 10-13-04, 02:53 PM You know, the way things are looking now, they'll probably end up with FOX before us HD Leaders. :(
dave99ag 10-13-04, 02:55 PM :( Hopefully it'll come in tonight for the Astros game. I had no luck last night.
Is the Waco FOX even broadcasting in HD? I'm guessing the ABC station is.
elspankdog 10-13-04, 03:01 PM The Waco Fox, KWKT, is doing HD at a whopping 1 kW. It is available via TWC in the area, and they are supposedly trying to get it added to Cox down here. ABC in Waco, KXXV, is also doing HD but has no plans at the moment with Cox.
labmansid 10-13-04, 03:56 PM You sure seem to know a lot about Cox! :)
dave99ag 10-13-04, 03:58 PM They don't call him elspankdog for nothing. ;)

What Dave said. Geez, you would have thought I posted a picture of a figurine or something.
dave99ag 10-13-04, 06:44 PM KRIV is coming in really well tonight even at 5:30pm. Looks like there's a very good chance to see the game in HD.
elspankdog 10-13-04, 06:53 PM Hope it holds up. Right now it is coming in better than it usually does at any time of the day. Dave, are you getting channel 88 also?
dave99ag 10-13-04, 07:01 PM At ~5:15pm I had 88 and 89, but now it's just 88. I guess they didn't need both channels and this will just be like the old 84.
I'm anxious to compare D* and OTA even if they're different games.
The storms down in Houston may be why we're getting good OTA signals.
labmansid 10-13-04, 07:25 PM Keeping fingers crossed!!:) KRIV, KTRK, and 88 for me right now.
dave99ag 10-13-04, 08:01 PM Pre-game is up and running.
labmansid 10-13-04, 08:20 PM Now THIS is what baseball should look like!!:D :D
labmansid 10-13-04, 08:24 PM GREAT START!! Thank you Beltran!!:D
dave99ag 10-13-04, 08:26 PM Both games look great!
It didn't even look like Beltran swung hard.
I wish they'd come in close with camera that handles the pitching, but that would put it out of the 4x3 framing.
jagouar 10-13-04, 08:32 PM topics must be insane tonight, im getting all the houston channels on my voom provided antenna :)
dave99ag 10-13-04, 08:41 PM Where's your antenna located, your tower?
I'm getting the occasional breakup, but nothing too bad.
Freakin' Pujols! :(
labmansid 10-13-04, 08:52 PM Yeah, a few breakups for me, too, better not happen at critical times! Should have walked Pooh-holes.

Glad to hear that.
dave99ag 10-13-04, 08:58 PM Hopefully KRIV will come in well tomorrow so we can compare it to D*.

its a crappy winegard on the voom dish (its a system they have, little antenna hookup on top of the dish).... its maybe 15 ft off the ground but it seems to work ok.
labmansid 10-13-04, 09:25 PM  KRIV is starting to break up pretty frequently now!
labmansid 10-13-04, 09:34 PM One thing I have been wondering about lately, when D* rolls out the Spaceway sats and starts providing HD locals in the Houston market, will that require a professional install? If so, we may have to get pretty creative! ;)
labmansid 10-13-04, 10:19 PM Man, that umpire has a low strike zone!!
elspankdog 10-13-04, 10:21 PM For Woody, he does!!!
