Ain't that the truth. I had a dinner I had to be at and was kind of pissed I wasn't getting to watch it. But I TIVO'd it like any good Aggie, got home around 11 - had no idea who won - and after the first three minutes I fast forwarded through the whole thing. Thank God I didn't sit through that. Payback's a b*tch I guess. We just aren't good enough to handle the road games yet. At least we're pretty much holding our own at home though...

yeah it started out bad and got worse..... still split with the sips thats an improvement.

I've been lurking awhile and decided to introduce myself. This xmas I got a Toshiba 52" DLP RPTV. I'm on D* but don't have HD yet. I live in the C.S. suburb of Navasota. I found this thread while looking for info on my best choices to get HD. After reading over 100 pages of this thread, I know I don't know Sh*t.

I think, however, this is where I'm at:

With D* HD package ( I'm in Houston's DMA wothout "moving")

FOX HD D*
ABC HD D*

other Htown local HDs when they come on line this summer.... right.

Since I'm 15-25 miles closer to Htown than most of ya'll, my roof is approx 40-45 feet high and I have, if necessary, about a 3/4 ac. back yard for a tower, I can put up a monster antenna(s) if necessary to get OTA HD.

I just not sure, with the potential addition of H's local HD broadcast, if I want to put up a bunch of antennas.

Well they say the limit on UHF is around 65 miles, so if you are indeed 25 miles closer to the tower, I think you would get more reliable reception than us other DXers. We're about 90 miles out, and I was usually only able to get reliable reception in the evening (aside from VHF KCEN). The big question is whether you want to spend the money for something you might not need in a few months.

You might want to try buying an antenna and mast locally that you can return. For example, the Channel Master 3020 and Spartan preamp from Lowe's with a tripod/mast from Radio Shack could be mounted on your roof temporarily for testing. If things are pretty reliable, you could then maybe step up to a Channel Master 4248 and Titan 7775/7777 preamp (which will probably be cheaper than the first setup ~$125 and smaller). The tripod mount will also be easy to take down if it all sucks.

One other question is how long it will take D* to get those first wave of locals out. Can you go without HD that long?

I used the GPS/Azimuth page someone posted earlier to get distances to transmission towers from my home. If I did it right, all of the Houston towers are b/t 65-66 miles from the house. I'm only 12 miles from KBTX's tower. It's kinda ironic that KBTX tower is located in Houston's DMA.

Since you can get ABC and FOX via D*, you only need CBS and NBC.

I get both of those pretty well with a CM 3020 and Spartan preamp mounted in my attic. If you mount outside, you will probably have even better results. I don't watch UPN or WB, but those come in pretty decent as well.

Even though D* says mid-2005 for HD locals, I'd expect that to get pushed back until late-2005. Then there's an issue of the new HD recievers. You might as well enjoy network HD now.

Got a quick D* question.... My dad had it installed today (long story, but basically I get BEV 100% free :)) and they installed a single lnb dish and a second one pointed for the locals.... I was going to move my Mits HD box over to his house but I will also need to bring my 3lnb dish over there too dont I? He got one of those SD tivo's (not going to keep it) but does the software need to download before the box is any good? The tivo was slower than my old Dish 6000.

On another note, the AE700 has finally been ordered and should be here by mid week.... followed closely by my free BEV system/programming. :)

Well, my HK receiver just crapped out last night. It kept powering itself off after a minute of usage. I tried it again this morning, but it did the same thing. Just dropped it off at CC. They're sending it off for repair. I wish they would just give me a new one. The sorry thing is that I was using it as a component switcher. Guess I'll have to hook the old Sony back up, and to think, I had just set it up in the bedroom.

Ahh. so its a known problems that tivo is slow as molasses ;)

And its not that big of a deal about the receiver (I have a component switcher if you need one temp rat shack one) but its not like theres anything important (say a allstar game in HD) that needs proper sound. ;) (and on that note TNT has really done a sweet job on the pre-all star game events.... all cameras are HD (including the chopper cam roaming denver), and the dunk competition was crazy last night in HD.

Im not going to mess with the mits receiver until probably monday or tuesday evening but i want to make sure to being my 3 lnb dish if hes going to need it... so does d* hd programming run off the main d* dish or does it need the tri lnb one.

D* uses all three sats for HD progarams. CBS-E/W, FOX-E, and NBC-E are on Sat-A (101); HDN, ESPN-HD, FOX-W, DSHD, NBC-W, SPICE-HD, and some special events channels are on Sat-B (119); ABC-E/W, HBO-HD, SHO-HD, UHD, HDNM, and PPV-HD are on Sat-C (110).

HaHa, how's the sound on the Daytona 500 there. DD 5.1 here. ;)

As for the component issue, I just hooked up the DVD player via SVid for now. Hopefully, I'll only have to put up with this for a week. Is your dad using the D* guide or the TiVo guide? The TiVo list guide is much better.

Well end of next week I will have BEV (and all locals in HD) plus all voom offers me.... I dont think D* will have TNT on by the end of the week. Im going to have the most HD channels of anybody then (already do but the best big name channels then :))

Its going to be close to 50 total HD channels once BEV gets here :)

I think its the regular guide (but im not keeping it so i dont care), Ive just heard pretty much everybody tell me that the SD tivo is gods gift to TV and I wasnt impressed. Even the old ass mits d* box is faster and the RCA38310 is faster changing channels than the SD tivo.

I've never watched a NASCAR event before. That finish was pretty exciting. It being in HD and 5.1 sure helped too. :)

I'm still bummed about not having TNT-HD for the All-Star game. There's at least HD highlights on Sportscenter.

They have playoff ball as well, right? That's when it will be important to have that channel, and that's really the only time I watch the NBA anymore.

Hey, you can trash the Tivo all you want but what it lacks in guide speed it makes up for in features, such as upgradeability, wishlists, season passes, etc. If there is nothing on "live" I just check "Now Playing" for something I've saved. Oh, and did I mention it RECORDS ! :p

replay has mostly the same features (and im comparing the SD tivo to SD replay) and tivo is alot slower.... I was dissapointed with the speed of it (not saying its a bad box) but everybody makes it out to be gods gift to recording and its certainly very slow for being so great (esp when Ive never used a slower box before... those with rca f38310 know what im talking about).

Anybody catch Battlestar Galactica on UHD tonight? This is one of those shows I've wanted to watch, but my HD snobbery has kept me away. Heck, I'm only on the second season of Smallville thanks to HDNet. Anyway, I guess I'll have to watch the SD episodes on SciFi now.

BTW it seems voOm is phasing in new encoders (mpeg4 ready ones, supposedly getting ready for the new channels) tonight (TNT and UHD have been off most of the night) and they just came back on and look better than they did (TNT Without a Trace looks just as good as it does on CBS OTA where before it was a little worse on the F38310, and Karen Sisko on UHD looks much better than it used to)... shame our new voomie wont get to see the old vs new.

I will be moving from Dallas to BCS this summer.

Given the recent SCHRIVA (sp?) issues, where is the best place for me to "live" if I were going to transfer my DirecTV (for HD reception)? I assume I would want to "live" somewhere that can't get any decent HD over the air signals so I could qualify for the East coast feeds, at least until they start rebroadcasting HD locals.

Currently looking in Pebble Creek neighborhoods, does anyone know if COX has high speed internet (what speeds?) and digital cable with HD and PVR available there? I might make the jump from D* if the HD PVR is dual tuner and available! It also didn't look like all the major networks were available thru Cox, what is the liklihood I could pick up the missing networks OTA from pebble creek?

Hey Bill, Cox offers NBC, PBS, CBS, but is missing Fox and ABC in HD. Supposedly, they are in negotiations with ABC, but Fox doesn't look as promising (who knows when are local Fox will do HD). They also offer high speed internet and a dual tuner HD PVR. Verizon DSL is also available in Pebble Creek if you want to keep your DirecTV service.

Now to the "moving" thing. I don't think they're is anyway to get East and West HD feeds if you move now thinks to SHVERA. Even if you move to an O&O market. So if possible, I would try to keep that Dallas address if you are already getting some O&O national HD feeds.

TxAg93 - In order for us to give you a better recommendation, you might start by telling us what you already have. If you literally move to a CS address - you will get CBS OTA and that is it through D*. They will not give you any national feeds. If you currently have national feeds or O&O feeds in Dallas and can maintain that address as far as D* is concerned - you will probably be better off. If you can't do that, then Cox is probably your best option (although not a great one).

I would "keep" your dallas address as well.... you wont get anything locals wise from D* for a long time with a CS address.

BTW where was this guy from? (wondering where "digicom" is)... sounds like they suck but atleast you got through teh hard part... the voom rep already informed me that they will mail you a dvr (no installers) when you upgrade your account to a dvr.

So what is the latest software version? Is there a guide or do you have to always push the voOm button? So far, it kills me to say that it's a pretty cool little box.

you can hit the "fav" button to get to the fav guide listing.... but there is no "guide" button just the voom one. (I just use the fav button on mine.. and have it set to just the channels I receive)

BTW "King Solomons Mines" jsut started on GuyTV.... is in 2.35:1 and DD 5.1 and looks great. (All new HDcinema movies will air in OAR.. plus all movies are DD 5.1)

And latest SW is 7.37 (i think), and you see you sw version from the installer menu.... (voom then "green" plus "green" then "system status" and scroll down one page its under HAL Version)

Cool, I have the latest software version. Too bad I have no sound in the bedroom (had to move the Sony receiver into the HT to replace the HK for now). The Dave Matthews concert looks like it probably sounds good. I hope the American Idol marathon that is going on in the main room ends soon.

yep installs inc has alwyas been the weak link on voOm... they were supposed to be in the process of building their own installer network but I havent heard much about that lately... Hopefully we will get a self install option real soon sicne voOm may be looking to cut costs and lets face it paying installers isnt cheap when most of vooms sub base is more than capable of installing their own systems.... plus Im sure the numbers are in the thousands of people that have cancelled because of no-shows and crappy installs.

But your through the hard part and you can start enjoying the true HD leader :)

ok question about the tivo's for D*.....

I see places such as Circuit City and Best Buy offer tivos for $99.... Can you buy these units and add them to your account w/o problems? OR is there some rule against adding these since you can only activate one tivo under the new customer install?

I don't see why you couldn't add another TiVo from BB or CC. Unless maybe those are new install deals your speaking of as well. I know most of us have multiple TiVos.

I bought one of those $99 Tivos for my in-laws over Christmas. I had no problems activating it through D*. They already were D* customers though.

How is the COX HD PVR? Is it the 6412 dual tuner?

Is there a magic place I can "move" to and receive all of the major locals in HD from D*? I can certainly keep or move to many Dallas addresses.

You might call and double check on that. I'm not sure that if you don't already have them running, that you can get them anymore.

I know nothing about the Cox PVR.

No, there is nowhere you can move to do that with D*. If you ever move from your Dallas address, you for sure won't get any.

Hey Bill, I believe the Cox DVR is the 6412 dual tuner, but they upgraded the drives. I could be wrong though. Maybe one of our resident Cox stb experts, Munky or Ish, will respond with some more info. Actually, I think everyone should PM (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/private.php?s=&action=newmessage&userid=7433541) Ish so that maybe he'll come back to us. I don't think he has posted this year. :(

Jag, did you ever get a long DVI cable for the new projector? The long run I got from the place I recommended before seems to be working very well with the voOm stb. With the Zenith 520 it was hooked up to before, there seemed to be a delay when changing channels, but the voOm box has no delay. I'm not surprised though. The Zenith box was one of the first with a DVI connection.

nope.... decided to just keep my vga for now since the pj has hdmi (not dvi of any form) anyways...

I will evantually get a hdmi cable (when i upgrade my htr5760, which wont be for a long time, and get one that supports hdmi switching)... until then I will be a vga/component person.

BTW since you run both dvi/vga do you notice a difference between them? Ive heard many reports actually saying component output is better than dvi on the voom stb.....

On another note I might be trying to pull a esp on my projector.... seems come march 1 panasonic is going to have a $200 rebate avaliable, and since I dont technically have it maybe I can save a little cash.... projector arrives on monday. God if KBTX fubars CSI:Miami monday night I'm going to go kick in their door and bring all the HD equipment back to my house so things can be done right.

That reminds me, I was planning on adding some phone numbers to the first post for contacting the local stations in case of an "HD emergency". So far I have one number for KBTX I got from a post from Dave, 846-7777. Does anybody know if this is Cooper's number or master control or neither? If the Waco/Temple people speak up, I'll add their's too.

Back to the DVI, it's hard to compare since the DVI is hooked up to a smaller CRT, and the component is running to a larger plasma. The plasma doesn't have both connections while the CRT doesn't have a long component run going to it. And even if I rigged one up, I don't know if I could tell a difference on such a small display.

One more Cox question: are any of you guys getting Universal or Starz! HD yet?

dunno if you watched any of the TNT ballgames on tonight but they were definately substandard PQ from voom... must be those new harmonic encoderd needing some tweaks still (or theyre gearing up for the new channels moving stuff around).... point is TNT usually looks much better than it did tonight.

The only thing I've watched on TNT so far has been a little of the X-Files which I'm sorry to say, wasn't all that impressive. I guess it's just an upconvert. I have however been kind of overwhelmed with the amount of HD channels I get know. I just keep surfing like some kind of junkie. :eek:

That number I have is the general number I pulled off of KBTX's website. I don't have a direct number to master control.

Well that's what I've been receiving, but it was never listed like that on my account before. It used to only have the two DNS and the Fox listing. BTW, Starz! HD is kicking some butt this weekend.

Academy Awards looks fantastic (well, depending on who's onscreen, of course ;) ), and they are making good use of surround sound. :)

Quick calibration with video essentials and then reconfig my HTPC for higher res and other updates it needs..... then Band of Brothers recording I have, a few DVD clips and then hopefully by 9 CSI:Miami the way it was intended to be viewed.....

There better not be any stuck pixels or DOA....


BTW Anybody here ever mess with Home Depot/Lowes/Walmart for drapes? I need something new for my Window now that I have a nicer projector. It seems most places have standard thin material that will let light in and Im looking for something that will look nice but allow me to completly darken the room if I want. I am going to mount the drapes inside the window inset (cant think of a better way to describe it)... using one of those rods that pull apart to fit multiple window widths..... I would go normal drapes and whatnot but my screen hangs over part of that window and i need something inside the inset.

jag, you might want to try Pier 1, World Market, or Bed Bath and Beyond for some velvet drapes. Those should be heavy enough to keep most light out.

Go to Hancocks and make your own. That's what we did on our two 4'x8' windows in the living room. We have the main fabric and then a thick, white fabric behind it. The room gets very dark when we have them down.

Man, just when I was about to call for my install!! ;) Really, though, I am kinda disappointed if it goes down the tubes. If nothing else, it made for some lively discussion. I did find it interesting that there was mention of Voom having 46,000 subscribers now, quite a jump from the previous 26k.

46k really wouldnt suprise me at all... the 26k didnt include any $1 installed people. Still if they go they go..... surely wont urge D* to increase HD offerings as fast.

If they do go Im going to be BEV only for a while. BTW as soon as we get news on the mpeg4 upgrade I need to get with one of you.... Here's how everything happened. This is coming from a good source that is near the events.

1) James Dolan issued the "VOOM is going to be dismantled" email after the board meeting was over. The email was sent to VOOM employees but not all Cablevision employees. Within minutes he puts a Press Release to put pressure on father to buy at his price.

2) Within minutes of the email, ****** (Remove name) Cablevision board member called the GM of HDNews to alert him that he, Chuck, and Tom were definitely NOT done trying to work out a deal. He added that the financing IS in place for both the purchase and operation of VOOM. The hang-up has something to do with removing Cablevision's legal and financial liability.

3) There was a meeting with the HDNews staff. NO timetables were given for layoffs. It was emphasized that layoffs were possible, if not probable... But they certainly weren't definite.

4) Chuck and Tom sent out an email to their employees to that end, saying that they are still trying to work a deal.

Theyre staying, theyre going, theyre staying, theyre going.... I hope one way or the other they decide.

Did you also read where somebody mention HDNet and voOm? Probably not very realistic, but we can dream, right?

no.... i wouldnt expect hdnet to come to voom (with the cuban/dolan feud) inHD always was more probably IMO than Hdnet.

I was hoping Cuban would buy voOm, but I don't think he has the resources.

I just glanced over the thread, but it looks like this guy (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=515808) got D* DNS HD feeds with HD waivers he got from his local affiliate. Just gotta get KYLE to give HD waivers here.

Well Figured it was time for my AE-700 initial review.....

Overall a very good projector and definately better than my old AE100. I am still experincing a few "issues" common to this PJ. Vertical Banding (which Ive been told diminishes over time) I really have to look to see it but its there on gray clouds still. My one other small issue is on whites (and this is only on my PC I get somehing like scan lines).... this is still all the optimizations from my AE100 so Im sur eI will be able to fix this with new tweaks desinged for the AE700 (havent researched much about it yet.. still in the enjoy it phase). Also the contrast is much better and supposedly can be even further improved with a filter for $50.

Now for the excellent..... color reproduction. Good lord IMO the color reproduction blows away almost every other projetor Ive seen (a few 25-50k runcos at CES were better) but they didnt cost 2k. Also this projector excells at a very smooth image (from its smooth screen technology). you cant see the pixel structure unless your within 2 ft of the screen.... just as good as any DLP as far as Ive seen. I rate the smoothness right up there with the Benq 720p DLP's.

DVD's look very good (~25% better) which is pretty good considering my AE100 could natively plan DVD. But the AE700 blows away the AE100 in HD viewing... this is where the 720p helps out and really makes a difference (this was the main reason I upgraded was for HD viewing/HD-DVD. You can really start to tell the difference between my "copied" DVD's vs the real thing with this projectror where it was very hard to on the AE100.

Overall Im happy with it..... still a few issues that need fixing but I should be able to tweak things to make a really awesome picture. Now we just need those HD-DVD's. Ill get some new pictures taken and uploaded in a week or so.... Want to get BEV installed so I can take the most up to date pictures.

First the bad: I got a message from today saying that my HK AVR630 needed parts to be repaired, and I could call the service center with any questions. Having the inquiring mind I do, I called to see what parts were needed. The receptionist looked up my claim and started rambling off parts such as front window display, back access panel, etc.

The Ugly: This all sounded way to complex for a unit that was powering itself off. They transfered me to the tech working on the unit, and he said it arrived damaged, and that he need all those parts in order to start to address the initial problem. After telling him that the unit is only two months old, he recommended asking the store for a replacement instead. Well after an hour and a half at my "favorite local retailer", I got my replacement unit.

The Good: CC doesn't carry the 630 anymore, so I got the newer 635 instead. I'm not sure of all the feature differences, but I know it does the auto EQ thing for the sub where my 630 only did the other 7 channels. I also kept my old remote so if you still need an SPL meter Dave, I have 3 now. :D

Glad to hear CC gave you a new one.

I have my own SPL meter, so you can keep your 3.

When I upgrade my receiver, I do like the feature of auto-calibration.

I guess I was paying the by month rate. It said I needed to make an annual commitment to get the $29.95 rate/month or it would go up from $34.95 to $37.95. No mention of FIOS, but I did notice when I went online to make my commitment, that there were two options:

$29.95 for the 1.5 Mbit
$39.95 for the 3 Mbit

I don't recall making a commitment when they dropped me down to $29.95 from $34.95. I won't be switching back to Cox, so the commitment doesn't worry me.

I don't think I'll upgrade to 3 Mbit though. 1.5 Mbit is fine for me at home until FIOS comes around.

i need to get that damn 1.5 here.... still on 768 because im supposedly too far from the switch or whatever it is. But whats funny is I can always download at more than 80k and it always starts ~200k and goes down to 80 and levels off.

ESPN-U is only available with the Sports Pack, which I do not have. If 51 shows it, then I don't have to worry about adding/removing the Sports Pack.

Hopefully, KBTX will multicast, and it won't seem as necessary. Two KBTX games multicasted will probably look as good as the D* feed.

btw from the D* press release... does it look like they are going to be requiring you to buy this package to no be blacked out from the CBS national feeds you guys already have? if so thats pretty lame.

well this show was with a college student (or just out of college)... interviewing people on the study abroad program. Its probably part of that TV magazine show with yellow teeth.... because it was on the same set. Probably this chick was doing one of the interviews.

And lets just say she was well endowed up top (had some wierdass thing hanging from her neck though, part of her wardrobe). She was interviewing 2 sisters (pretty hot as well) talking about their study abroad trip to Italy.

One of the workers just came to my door and said they were laying fiber for Cox. :( The kicker is that they found the Verizon line on my side and not the one they were looking for. They dug a hole in my backyard for no reason. Cox still sucks!

My guess is that Walker would agree with you. We will never win consistently in the Big 12 with a 6-4 power forward, it just won't happen and K-State is the exact kind of team that can take advantage of that fact.

I was wondering if anyone here happened to watch/Tivo "Numbers" from CBS this past Friday on KBTX. We just watched it a few minutes ago on the Tivo and it had all sorts of breakups, almost made it un-watchable. Maybe it looked better in Canada. ;)

It was fine on voom (good ole HD-tivo strikes again).... I watched most of it live.

And canada doesnt go live ath the HD leader house until wed :)

It looked like a signal reception problem rather than a hardware problem, other recordings seem to be OK. Maybe KYLE-DT's signal briefly overpowered KBTX that night. ;) Since we were out of town Thu.-Sat. at least we were able to watch it in HD after we got back.

Well, since both of my units are in the list for later, I will assume it will be "later". :p I still have the "e" update, although I see in system info I got a system download this morning with a call scheduled for Tues. morning. We'll see.

Who knows maybe they were testing.... but it had to have been a hardware problem on your end though.... because the source was fine (again atleast on voom). One other thing to look at was it was very windy that night but your antenna is better than mine but it was really gusting and your tower is much higher... maybe it was blowing around enough to temporarily lose signal. I dont have any speeds but the gusts were well into the 30-40 mph range.

Well, I moved the plasma this weekend. Disregard the "center channel stand". I gotta get some sort of credenza to hold/house the cc. Moving all the speakers (the 4 rears were a b*&tch) has really improved the overall sound, and the lower display is a totally different feel.

I bet.... It was high before. I know it annoyed me when my screen was higher than viewing position and I had to tilt my head up to watch the projector. I moved it about a ft down on my redo and its much more pleasing to watch long movies.

Hey guys it wasn't that high before. It was perfect for lounging in the loveseat and for a lot of people during sporting events (barstools, standing around, etc.). Lower is definitely better though. And you know, it wasn't really a Jimmy situation. I actually had help from the little lady.

Hopefully, she'll be as helpful and willing in the credenza purchase. Need to get something soon (thank you IRS). It will be the perfect place to house an HTPC (no long DVI run). A Mac Mini would look a lot cooler on a credenza than that figurine on the mantle. Are those things doable as HTPCs?

BTW I got my filter in today.... wow what a difference. Blacks are pretty much perfect now (which is very hard to accomplish on a projector). Colors have always been awesome on the AE700 (supposedly it can do nearly perfect coloring for most of the spectrum.... from the pj forum with the B/W filter).

Its scary good now..... watching Tears of the Sun right now on starz (which is a very dark movie) and you can see a ton of shadow detail now.

And I thought it looked good when I got it... ;)

Beleive me, if D* offered equip at a halfway normal price Id sub to them too. But theres no way in hell Im going to buy equipment again. Ive gone from provider to provider (whoever gives me the best deal). If I could get a HD D* box for <10/month (and voom goes away) Id sub but not until then.

Im going to have to wait until right before D* upgrades everybody..... My mits is dead (doenst output anything on the HD side of things.... it was at my gradnparents so they could see the HD difference OTA, and came back dead). so its useless right now so as soon as we find some good switchout plans Im going to get it added to one of your systems and hopefully they dont check it too closely... :)

EDIT: Just to rub it in a bit more it looks like I will be getting 3 canadian feeds... was just browsing on the tv listings and CBS E/W is going to have it but so is TSN (the sports network) canadas equivalent to ESPN. so between those I should be able to watch every game avaliable (im betting most of the channels will mirror but between those 4 i should be able to see every Hd game :))

EDIT: Just to rub it in a bit more it looks like I will be getting 3 canadian feeds... was just browsing on the tv listings and CBS E/W is going to have it but so is TSN (the sports network) canadas equivalent to ESPN. so between those I should be able to watch every game avaliable (im betting most of the channels will mirror but between those 4 i should be able to see every Hd game :))

So I guess they're not really multicasting. Just one game on the HD feed and one on the analog feed. Hopefully, KHOU will show the games I want to see on the analog feed so I can use the TiVo (no analog KBTX feeds for TiVo :( ). Otherwise, I'll have to put the Zenith stb back in the main room for analog KBTX. Sure will be nice to record HD action that I'll miss while being at work.

Good thing I have that harmony.... BTW sid. I was wondering if you evaluated any other subs before going with your SVS? I know you got the high end one but I was looking and was looking at possibly upgrading mine to a PB-10 (smaller woofer but supposedly its better). Just curious to see if you got to listed to it or any competators before going with the SVS? Since I got my SVS a few years ago I havent looked much at subs.

I saw the 429 price for the PB-10 and was interested. Esp since I should be able to sell mine for ~350. (I have a few possible interested people but you dont know of anybody that is looking for a 25-31 SC? [retuned to 22])

No but in order for "hd-tivo" to see teh sips you would need KBTX to show the SD feed like pbs and reduce the quality of KBTX's digital feed.... which is a VERY big no no for me.

I only actually listened to the usual subs in some of the A/V stores here and in Houston, mostly. I had heard about SVS quite some time before, some on AVS but mostly on the Spot, and when we moved where we are now figured it was time to get a real sub. The ones in the stores sounded pretty good, but for the same money I figured I could do better. I did the obligatory e-mail to SVS to get their recommendation on my room, and of course ordered the model higher than what they said should do ;) . It was kind of scary ordering something that expensive without actually hearing it first, but the return policy helped on that. I have actually auditioned mine since getting it to a guy in Waco who came down, and I think he eventually ordered one.

I assume you didnt audition the PB-10 then? I know their return policy is good but for me 400 bucks is alot of $ (insert stupid joke here about be dropping almost 2k on a AE700)

Nope, didn't audition anything from SVS or HSU first, went by testimonials. The shipping wasn't that much, even both ways.

Well downrezzed was a bad choice of words... its cut down bitrate/re-encoded (much like HD-lite from D*)... plus BW doesnt hurt DVD as much as HD.... so I rarely notice a diffference even on my new hella-setup.

But, but, but...are you telling me the Superbit stuff is all hype? I love me some Superbit and Blose. Hell, throw in some Monster Cables as well. :rolleyes:

hah... well there is a slight difference in my movies (most of of it is taking a 9 gig image down to 4.7), most of the time extras and un-needed soundtracks take care of most of it. Still costs me $1 per disc to produce and I get them weeks and months before official street date.

Aren't you afraid of the MPAA? How much bw does it take for an analog feed? It wouldn't take much to match the D* analog locals. What are KAMU's bw numbers for analog?

KAMU is giving the analog feed 5 mb (or around that) and 14 for the HD stream. Its much much worse than when it first started.

So KBTX would have to do something similar.

And Im not too afraid of the MPAA.... security on the "sites" is more than good.... its not filesharing at all.

KBTX was announcing what games they are showing on the 10:00 Sportscast. Pretty much mimics what's on the website, without all the other games to get in the way. I assume KBTX-TV is analog on 3, KBTX-DT is the HD counterpart on 3-1.

Utah vs UTEP 2:05PM on KBTX-TV, in HD on KBTX-DT & Cox HD Channel 710

So it looks like all three channels will be showing the same games, with the exception of the 6:10/6:25 games. The program guide for KHOU does show the sips game on there, for the SD-Tivo :p .

i dont even know why people here care about the sips... theyre going down to nevada anyways. they better hope they go down to nevada or illinois will be downright embarassing.

I added some antenna recommendations on the first page for the few OTA channels we get. Of course, people could just post here and ask. Then we could give them all of our other awesome ideas: HDTiVo, "moving" to Houston, canceling Cox, voOm, "moving to Canada", buying figurines, etc.

Anyways, I just got a new bulb for my X1. After over 3000hrs on the old one, I hadn't realized what I have been missing. It's like a new projector all over again.

Yes, CBS seems to know how to do HD sports. :) I think jag has been too busy preparing for his move up North! ;)

The games looked great. All that b-ball gave the HD-TiVo a workout today. Did anyone else notice the camera go out of focus occasionally? I think it was the Arizona games. Maybe when the graphics would change.

BTW, I think KBTX did a great job today. I recorded the whole day's lineup, and they did a great job "flipping the switch". It's just hard to stand SD after watching so much HD. The tsip picture on D* KHOU was pretty bad.

I was noticing that too....It seems as if they are throttling the bandwidth dynamically, or maybe when they switch between games, their setting are getting screwed up.

BTW...Are those screenshots of your plasma or do you have a projector too?

They're from the plasma. A projector probably won't happen until we get a new house and the wifey finishes school.

that was a nice little hail storm we had wasnt it? I havent gone outside yet but the voom box is still showing signal (the little green light is on) so hopefully it didnt screw anything up.

did KBTX go dark for anybody else? I rerouted my voom input to the RCA F38310 because theres no way the AE700 is going on in this weather since I dont have a battery backup yet. So its possible the RCa is screwing up but Im getting KAMU fine.

EDIT... NM, KBTX is still up on voom.... wonder why KAMU would go through on the voom line but KBTX wouldnt.

KBTX went black on me too. Stupid dish 6000 receiver...If I tune to a channel that it cant pickup it deletes it from my program guide and local channel setup. I had to manually readd it once it came back. If I scanned, I would lose all the other low signal ones I have saved for the good topo nights.
