WNCT-FM doesn't seem to be as strong either. I wonder if they are required to cut back on power while the tower crew is working?

I believe so. But unless they are working round the clock, it looks like they could turn things back up during peak TV hours.

I can't. When the leaves came off the trees in mid autumn, I lost the signal of WRAL. Interestingly, I picked up WLFL a LOT stronger. WNCN and WRDC about the same as before. I need to get out there and try to peak the antenna again I guess. The Wilmington stations WWAY and WECT are my strongest.

Weastern,

My WNCT signal is back to normal. Do u know if anyone worked on the transmitter? If not, I guess I need to take a look at my amp outside...

There was nothing to work on. When they went out on Monday, everything was working fine. Signal output is normal, etc.

Are you guys also seeing this weak WNCT signal away from Jacksonville, or is this just my problem? I wonder if cable TV could be leaking into channel 10?

Also on the show Steve Wilkos on the CW, the audio is not in sync with the video.

WNCT still weak here. Out of sync audio is fairly common on the CW at my house.

The CW has had audio sync problems ever since they introduced it on 9.2. It was never a problem when it was handled by Suddenlink and WITN

OK, thanks. I don't know what else to do short of checking my antenna connections/pre-amp for corrosion. I don't know when I will get around to that... No time soon, that's for sure.:( As long as I can get a solid picture, I can live with it.

I also tried rabbit ears, and the signal was the same as my outdoor antenna. This isn't normal. Last time I used rabbit ears, the signal was a lot weaker than the outdoor, so that kind of leads me to believe I have a problem outside.

WNCT OTA has been normal for me for a week now. I must have had a problem with that piece of screen I put on the HD 8800 touching something it shouldn't due to all that wind and it was causing impedance mismatch. At least it fixed itself on its own.

It all depends on the source. Not all syndicated shows have made the switch to HD. Millionaire, for example, is still shot in SD. Rachel Ray is another.

I get that, what I meant was the station should run spots saying "WHeel & Jeopardy now available in Hi Definition on WITN". etc.

Maybe they are,,, I don't watch TV all day, but if Jamie hadn't of posted about it, I wouldn't have even known. A lot of people on cable keep watching the analog 7 because they don't like turning to 999 or whatever the HD access is on cable... and without an ad, won't even think to turn there. IMO:) Why cable can't auto tune to the HD channel from 7 is ridiculous.

I did a rescan this morning (in Rocky Mount), and I don't have one. Normally whatever Greenville gets, we are just before/after, so not sure where this fits in. Finding out real dates on new services is a maddening experience with Suddenlink, so it usually comes by surprise when something new rolls out.

To add to that, there is a user on dslreports.com stating he is now getting several new HD channels in Greenville, while others are not. He did however point us tvguide.com listings which also include the new channels, and my zip 27803 shows them as well. Here's hoping....

Finally figured out what was wrong with WNCT signal along with FM radio reception. It seems my pre-amp is short circuiting. I'm not sure if it's the inside pwr supply or the outdoor part, but disconnecting the power, and unplugging the cables for a while fixed it for now. I used the radio to tell when it was right. I was getting clear stereo FM with the coaxes disconnected from the pwer supply, so I knew something was way wrong. Oddly enough, the problems didn't affect WCTI or any UHF channels... ?

It's that time of year when the Tropospheric Ducting is happening again. Last night at one point I couldn't tune in WITN, WNCT, or WYDO. I was also getting Charleston and Myrtle Beach TV really strong.

I remember last year Skip did a lesson on TD during a weathercast one night. Maybe he should do it again. Last night the power seemed to be pushing north from the south.

Thought I'd update and say since Arrow or Bob or whatever they go by 93.3 got their antenna mess working I have had no more low signal on 9.

A few nights ago WCIV came in and canceled out WPXU. That was amazing. So far I can't pick anything up past Savannah. I'll keep trying. :D

93.3 seems to be back to normal in Wilson, but 107.9 is still weak around here. I wonder if 107.9 is replacing their antenna too. It's an old RCA panel antenna just like the one that 93.3 replaced.

I don't know, but I agree their signal isn't right. When I came from Fayetteville recently, 107/9 did not seem like it was as strong as it once was... I figured it may have been due to 933 work, but maybe not.

Same here, when they were on 53, (before AUX antenna) it seemed much easier.

I bet if we got on each of our roofs and probed again, we could probably find a sweet spot, but it just isn't worth all that trouble of moving everything and drilling more holes etc for a few channels when we already get the same networks... The leaves have blocked 27 & 28 for me now. I was getting them both really well over the winter.

I don't think it has anything to do with antenna placement. Others here who used to receive WRAL on 53 don't get them now on 48 and there are no co-channel or first adjacent issues, as it was when they were on 53. (WFMY on 51).

Question for the Suddenlink folks:

Have their boxes gotten any better in the last couple years? I hated the box I had back in 2005, (been D*) since). Don't really like my father-in-laws box either, not sure exactly what it is (scientific atlanta something) didn't even have HDMI connections. He says he has a newer box with DVR now, but haven't seen it.

I'm moving here in the next couple months and will actually be able to decide between D* and Suddenlink. Will probably want 1 HD-DVR and 1 HD receiver. (same as I currently have) but would like to pay less than $90/month. Am I better off with D*, or should I give Suddenlink a shot? I will probably be going with their high-speed internet.

Hey Foxeng,

Getting WRAL and WRAZ at 95% tonight. Every time it is rainy and cloudy like this, they come in good, also all the others except WTVD.

Interesting phenomenon too, I can pick up WSFX, WYDO, and WRAZ also, so I can check the feeds for sync, and WYDO is first for delivery of signal, followed by WSFX by 2 seconds and a second behind that is WRAZ. This is what they call a reflection I believe, where the signals that are arriving to the tuner a bit later are being reflected off of something and taking a longer path to the antenna.

Now WRAL is quite a ways behind WNCT, probably 15 seconds, but I believe WRAL runs on a delay anyway on purpose.

Hey Ken,

great work with the results running in the ABC crawl to not ruin HD reception.

Rescanning - PSIP problems:

Disconnect the antenna from the STB..Scan...the box will have zero channels. connect the antenna and rescan again, see if that works. Rescanning with no antenna input blows out the VCT if its corrupt and you can start fresh over.

Not unless that Phillips camera has a 16x9 HD chip block in it. We used to have those type cameras (1990's model) and they stopped making them around 2000 and I don't think there were ever any HD models made. My guess is that is either an LDK9 (4x3 model, the model we had or the 16x9 LDK10 model and both SD). The viewfinder will do 16x9 natively though the picture shown, it is in 4x3 mode, like the camera.

ABC (channel 012 on Dish) is not on HD. Right now is zoomed all the way and the top and bottom of the image in the screen is being cut. and by the way, the feed came back at 10:43 PM, an hour and 43 minutes after the Lost finale started.

WCTI (ABC) transmission over-the-air came back just after 7 PM. I think that is what Ken was saying, and said that DISH NETWORK has to come to repair their antennas / equipment to get your feed on there the way it should be. The lightning probably bounced around when it hit.

Anyone have any idea how many people use over the air for TV in this area? I know recently they ( nielsen ) said after the digital transition that antenna viewers dropped nation wide. I think this is misleading, because many times people will use antennas to pick up channels they can't get on cable or dish, especially across the market border line. They also don't seem to count people who use dish/cable and antennas as being over the air, even if they don't have dish/cable on all their TV's. Doesn't seem accurate to me for broadcasters. Sometimes I wonder why TV stations even have towers and transmitters anymore if they aren't going to be given credit where credit is due?? Often times some stations tend to underestimate their actual coverage ground, probably because people aren't being counted around the outer perimeter like they outta be.

I think there are more people watching OTA than are officially being reported. I have Directv, but I get my locals OTA. All of my Directv receivers have OTA tuners in them. I get all the locals, both the Raleigh and Greenville area channels instead of what some artificial market boundary says I should have.

Scott, you'd be surprised to see which station stepped up to the Nielsen plate and won all but one of the newscasts...and is #1 sign-on to sign-off in the May book. Any guesses?

You guys could really step up to the plate if you could sync your audio and video. Local content is off by about a half second or so and network content is off by over a second. It's unwatchable on network. Thank God I can receive WRAL. BTW, the audio is leading the video. It's been like this for at least a month.

I know all I do is complain but this is the kind of stuff I'm talking about. There is no excuse for this. If you want to be professional then be professional. It doesn't matter how good, bad or outdated your equipment is. The devil is in the details. Get it right everytime.

I didn't realize how many TV "insiders" we have lurking here! How about sharing the numbers with us viewers that make it all possible to say you "won"?

I agree RMartin. I haven't been saying much about things I see going wrong because I don't want to be the one doing all the complaining. I have done my share here for sure. I hate to see a station going backwards like that, and I wish they would fix CW audio too.

to answer the question, yes, all the staff does watch the local content. we're obviously not seeing what you're seeing. that in no way means that there is not a problem somewhere in the distribution pipeline though.

like i said, i will be happy to pass along your comments. and for those of you that are seeing the problem... are you ota, on a cable system, satellite? is it just cbs 9 or cw9 or both? we had a power bump last week that affected the next day's morning show, but as far as i understand, the lip sync error was cleared up once we knew there was a problem. that was the same day the cbs receiver fed a different feed of y&r. all related to the power bump. i think jsp mentioned that.

i watched tonight's show at 6 while working and didn't see any lip sync problems via suddenlink cable.

let me know and i'll be happy to send along your comments.

If you are watching 9 HD on a smaller TV, the lip sinc is harder to see, but on an HD set, you can clearly see the maybe .5 second delay in lips compared to audio. George, maybe they need to turn off the Dolby Digital Encoder and see if that helps, then go from there? I'm no engineer, but I remember WWAY doing this before when they had problems.

I have seen a problem on CW9 and there was a problem this morning on the Morning Edition from the time I turned it on until about 6:25 but that was about a 5 minute time span. I watch on Suddenlink and watch it on both HD (37 inch tv) and non HD in Williamston and other than the incident that George mentioned and the one I saw this morning I have seen no problems on WNCT, and I watch them more than any other channel. Now on CW9, I saw obvious problems with the audio sync yesterday and a little this morning but then turned it on before I left for work and everything seemed normal.

I'm in the Asheville Market and WLOS and WSPA are HD (both for Studio). WYFF is Widescreen and FOX Carolina (WHNS) is the lone holdout for now. However, they're (WHNS) now airing HD promos for their local news and syndicated programming, so I suspect that it won't be long before they go 16:9 Widescreen or HD.

Well, being first in 16:9 doesn't really mean anything. It just means we WERE first. Once. :)

Going 16:9 was a no brainer for us. Our SD digital cameras did 16:9 or 4:3. Just flip the switch. Graphics were modified to be anamorphic and we could use the same SD equipment and it passed anamorphic material with very little PQ degradation. (sidebar - We were already using digital studio equipment anyway. If it had been analog as many stations have, we would have never done 16:9 SD. The degradation of PQ is too noticeable, that being because of the limitations of analog NTSC. Saw that in our analog microwave links. It was digital from the trucks to the receive sites, but from there back to the studio, it was analog and anamorphic video through it looked bad! I suspect that our competition is using analog paths because their SD 16:9 doesn't look as crisp as ours does. A sign that analog NTSC is being used somewhere.) I asked our head director a few weeks into 16:9 and I asked him what he thought. His response was, "I'll be damned how it works, but it sure looks great!" He was confused because he hadn't put all the pieces together how a "4:3" switcher could pass 16:9 by just changing the 4:3 monitors to 16:9 monitors and changing the graphics. It is a little more than that, but basically, that the jest of it. He understands now.

Would I hope we are first in HD? ABSOLUTELY!! (Who wouldn't?) But sadly, I have no say on that subject. Ken12 knows that feeling as well as I do, just like every other engineer. We just do what we are told and really don't worry about stuff like that. That kind of stuff is WAY above my pay grade.

Now if it were MY money........ :D

WCTI-TV AND WFXI/WYDO-TV ARE FIRST WITH
HD LOCAL NEWS BROADCASTS IN
GREENVILLE/NEW BERN/JACKSONVILLE MARKET

Bonten Media Group’s WCTI-TV (ABC) and Esteem Broadcasting’s WFXI/WYDO-TV (FOX) became the first television stations in the Greenville/New Bern/Jacksonville market to broadcast local news in high definition (HD) at 6PM and 10PM Sunday, June 27, 2010, respectively.

Greenville, New Bern Jacksonville is the second Bonten Media market to be “first” in local High Definition newscasts. Bonten became the first television broadcaster to go HD with local news last week in Tri Cities TN/VA, DMA 93, with WCYB-TV and WEMT-TV.

“This new technology is a big step forward in the digital television evolution and means that we will now be airing a minimum of 97 hours of HD programming per week, including 24 hours of local news on WCTI-TV. The 6 hours of FOX Eastern Carolina News at 10PM in HD coupled with FOX Prime and FOX Sports form the backbone of that station’s HD offerings. For the approximately 1.1 million people in our total viewing area, having local news broadcast in high definition will be a welcome enhancement to their viewing experience. Our stations have long led the way with innovation in Eastern North Carolina and we are pleased to be first once again,” says Vice President and General Manager Jim McKernan. WCTI was the first station in the market to broadcast a digital signal, beginning in December 1999; and the first in the market to broadcast in HD with the 2003 Super Bowl, Super Bowl XXXVII, on ABC on Jan. 26, 2003.

“Our substantial investment in being the first to bring local HD news to the Greenville/New Bern/Jacksonville market is yet another example of Bonten’s ongoing commitment to leadership and to meeting the needs of Eastern Carolina viewers,” says Bonten Media Group President and CEO Randy Bongarten.

For the upgrade to HD local news, the stations chose Panasonic P2 HD cameras and the Bitcentral news editing system, which is widely used by television companies, such as NBC, FOX and CNN. Grass Valley provided the production switcher and studio cameras. Notably, Grass Valley’s HD equipment was used extensively in the recent Winter Olympics.

“The equipment vendors we chose met the stringent requirements we established for the HD build out and committed their entire resources in achieving the process and result,” according to WCTI/WFXI/WYDO Chief Engineer Ken Hughes.

###

Bonten Media Group currently operates sixteen* full power, low power and digital television stations in eight markets, including: WCYB (NBC), WEMT* (FOX) and CW-4 (CW-DT), Tri-Cities, TN/VA; WCTI (ABC),WFXI/WYDO* (FOX) and ENC-TV (IND-DT), Greenville-New Bern, NC; KRCR (ABC), Chico-Redding, CA; KTXS (ABC), KTES-LP (Telemundo) and CW Abilene (CW-DT), Abilene, TX; KECI/KCFW (NBC), Missoula, MT; KTVM (NBC), Butte-Bozeman, MT; KTXE-LP (ABC), San Angelo, TX; and KAEF (ABC), Eureka, CA.

Nothing definate planed right now but we are talking about it. If we don't get it done this year I'm sure it will happen next. We have done a lot this year and we have to learn the equipment that we have just installed. I'm sure over the next several months we will be tweaking things and discovering new things that we can do with what we have. Things like the side bars for 4x3 content we have talked alot about them and for now have decided to leave them black but that could change tomorow. I think the best looking part of the WCTI/WFXI/WYDO HD News is the weather graphics.
I think it would look a little better if the camera was zoomed out a little when on the anchors. It is a little to close on the anchors. Zoom it out a little give it a more widescreen look. When it is zoomed in close I feel like Im watching the old broadcast.
When the weather is shown it is more zoomed out and feels like HD.

The HD looks good and I enjoy watching the news on WCTI. Great job to all involved at WCTI for the HD upgrade.

I was noticing how close in it seemed too Jamie. I'm sure it takes some getting used to, and also don't forget that even still the majority of WCTI's audience is probably still watching on an analog cable. So they have to take into consideration not to chop off things on the side of their picture.

The weather maps look outstanding. I really like the new HD Doppler background graphic, and the Tropical Satellite images.

Historically within 12 months, most if not all stations will follow the first station to go either widescreen or HD. Of course that is based on Top 50 markets. You get 50 and greater with smaller owners, that doesn't always hold true. In my market's case (Market 46), we went widescreen in September, then in January the CBS went widescreen and then in February the NBC went widescreen (the ABC here doesn't do news). Another interesting fact from my market, after we went widescreen, we saw a spike in the ratings in November, while the CBS and NBC took a drip (NBC the most and due to the 10pm Jay Leno Show) and the fact of us going widescreen is cited as the reason and why the other two followed so quickly. Of course the owners in my market are multi station owners in mid size markets. Bonton is unusual in the fact that they are a small owner in small markets, but it is happening. In places. Roanoke, VA (Market 67) is a greater than 50 Market where a small owner went HD (WDBJ)and the main competitor (WSLS) followed shortly thereafter. The 3rd and 4th news stations in that market are still 4:3 SD (ABC and FOX) 2 years later.

Another interesting tidbit of the Top 50 Markets, 47 markets have at least one widescreen/HD newscast with 40 markets having at least one HD newscast with only 3 markets of the Top 50 only doing 4:3 SD by all stations. You get below 50 and that trend starts to fall a part quickly.

Another interesting tidbit is of Top 50 market stations that have gone HD, only a handful (less than 20 stations I can personally confirm, Top 10 included) do more than studio HD, meaning they shoot HD, edit HD, feed HD from the feed in stories and Live Shots, not just HD only in the studio. In North Carolina, only WRAL does full HD. None of the other HD stations in North Carolina do HD outside of the studio, except for maybe a stray helicopter that I can find. (Anybody know of anymore? Always trying to update the info.)

We trade stories with WTVD, WLOS and WSOC and while those three are doing HD news, they shoot widescreen SD in the field, not HD. That fact surprised the heck out of me. I was talking to a photog out of WAGA, the FOX O & O in Atlanta a few months back and they were still shooting field shots with Panasonic SD P2 field cameras even though they have been doing HD studio for a while. Same with FOX O & O WTTG, Washington DC.

It is very interesting on how stations and owners have elected to do HD in these trying times. It ain't quick, and it ain't cheap no matter how you do it. The fact that Ken could do it with a small owner in a small market is truly remarkable and hats off to Ken and his staff for quite an achievement.

Last night I watched a little of WNCT news at 11, and I could tell a difference in the audio. During one story clip, I had good surround sound. Not sure if that means anything or not. Also it looked like the weatherman was shrunk down when at the board. That could be from watching WCTI HD though...

We are shooting and editing everything in 720p our limitation is live shots our live system is still SD and my transmitter to studio link is still analog. I hope we take care of that next year. When I get a chance I'll list some of the major items that we have purchased. One of the best comments I heard was that someone said they thought they were going to have to tell Les to get out of there living room.

Very nice job Ken. I'm glad you were able to get 'er dun.

I don't know if the next station will be WITN unless they've abandoned their plans for the new studio on Arlington Blvd in Greenville. I don't know how much work it is to move all of the equipment associated with HD but it doesn't make sense to me to install it at the old studios and then move everything to the new studios.

WSOC does HD in the studio. The helicopter is HD both live and taped. Taped stories and Live shots are 480, 16x9. Most stations in the country will continue to go this way as HD editing is expensive and a storage nightmare. Live HD from the field involves very expensive encoders. WSOC has 8 live trucks. It would cost $250,000 just to install encoders in the trucks.

I did not watch the whole show, just looking for clues and such.;) I am too excited with 12 and the new look. I tune in every time I can. I don't think it will get boring anytime soon. Just an outstanding job is all I can say and looking forward to watching for a long time to come.

I spoke with my dad in Kinston a few moments ago and he gives "2 Thumbs Up" to tonight's HD Local News Debut. I'm going down there for the Holiday Weekend and will be able to see it then. Congratulations, Ken12 and WCTI!

@Ken12: Caught the news Friday and over the weekend during my visit to ENC and was very impressed. I had to educate my dad on the "Zoom" function on his HDTV, though. He had stretched the screen to remove the black sidebars when watching 12, but I very quietly switched it back for them. A "Pet Peeve" of mine that's now resolved. LOL

At least he was watching the HD. Quite a few people when hooked up to cable are watching the SD from cable and don't even realize it

You wouldn't believe how many times I have helped (or tried to help;)) people watch the HD channel of a local on cable and not the analog. Most seem to just punch in 12 and not 12-1 and are satisfied with the watered down version. Why spend the money for an HD set if you aren't going to watch it in HD? I've even tried to delete the analogs from some friends TV's, but they still come up. And even worse is when you have an HD cable box and they put the HD's way up in the 1000's!

It can be worse. For some reason Suddenlink in Greenville wont map the channels down correctly on some televisions. The HD channels are there but they are positioned with numbers I can't even begin to remember. I think one is actually 5 digits long.

On the Fayetteville Time Warner, they keep changing the channels all the time, not so much the locals, but the cable ones they have unencrypted. Some are 7 digits long.

I find here in Jacksonville on TW, a lot of blank channels get added and you have to keep either scanning over, or deleting. It is a headache, and I think those people are doing it on purpose.

Good question. My wife pushed me into buying this 50" Samsung DLP that we have. Last week I walked in the house and she was watching the news on 9. I aked why she wasn't watching the hi-def on 12 and she got a little snooty and said she couldn't care less about the hi-def. Whatever, you're the one that had to have it.

More proof that razzle and dazzle will not sway many news viewers. Most people watch people they like and know...and because they always have watched that channel.

Not saying HD won't turn some heads, but if you are a hockey fan and the game is in SD, versus a basketball game in HD on another channel..what would you watch? You're not going to switch your favorite sport because of it.

I agree about the watch the people you like. I don't care if WITN came in the family room and sat down beside me I won't watch their news because I don't like their personalities. Even though I love watching things in HD I mainly watch the news on WNCT, however I usually catch Fox News at 10. CTI has all their good personalities on that newscast. I just can't get in to watching their AM meteorologist or anchors and I don't particularly like Wes Goforth. Don't really know why just don't. Plus the most important part of the news to me is the weather and Gannon, David, and Kweilyn do the best job of the weather in this market.

They are. A headend person confirmed it for me. It isn't so much to tick people off, but when they add new stuff, they routinely shuffle things around to fit the encoders they are using at the time.

It is interesting to note that the Raleigh TWC headend feeds everything east, except Wilmington, and the Greensboro headend feeds west and south through Charlotte and along the NC/SC border to Wilmington. The Raleigh headend feeds the premium channels like HBO and Showtime to everyone in NC.

I can't really say I dislike anyone on 9 or 12. I think Gannon and David are really good, and Kweilyn is fun to watch when I have watched her, but I have not watched WNCT for anymore than a minute or two since WCTI went Hi Density. Many, Many years went by that I did not watch Skip, but after WWAY, and WECT changed and I didn't like their weather, WNCT cut their chief, I started watching 12, and I believe they do better than 9 most times during storms now.

I'm watching on DirecTV at home and not hearing any audio problems. And not hearing them at the station off air. Give me some more info and we will look into this. The only difference in wx and anything else in the news is the microphone they are using. I'll monitor closely today and see if I can detect anything but usually if we have a widespread problem like this my phone is going crazy.
