I would say to combine antennas, to just get a splitter and use it in reverse. Or if it has twin lead use a two way combiner with the screws and then run a line of coax into the receiver.
That is the only way I know how. :)
agregjones 04-13-05, 10:25 AM If you are aiming them in different directions, you would want to separate them vertically about 4 feet. This will help the two structures not build one large underperforming antenna.
Griff Thomasson 04-13-05, 07:07 PM Eastern- on the web site that fox eng posted a few pages back---- there are some very good links to using and building dual antennas- if you want to try- it - I have not done this so this is only from what I have read---- It is important to keep the wiring of the two anennas the same length- as JSP said I would think a splitter used backwards would work in an indoor sit.
You puppy chew up your antenna- grin---- last week end I used 4 cubic yards of dirt to fill in holes that my puppies have dug--- they loved the fresh dirt--- dug it back out as fast as I could put it in ---LOL---
Checking around on the web today and found that warren electronics has the Channel Master 4221 Bowtie ant. on sale for $20.00
Here is the link...http://www.warrenelectronics.com/antennas/4221.htm
Griff Thomasson 04-14-05, 03:34 PM Really good prices------!!
I think WFXI may be on the air!? Griff can you check it from your end. Here is a link to the info I found, click on it and then scroll to the bottom of the page...

easternncnewswat 04-15-05, 04:12 PM jspENC,
If it is, I'm not getting any signal in Greenville... I wouldn't expect to, but it'd be nice to at least see the signal light flashing.
Eh, what the heck am I saying... *LOL*
Here is the service area, and Swansboro is included...http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=DS1056236.html
Of course this is low power but it is a start anyway I guess...
easternncnewswat 04-15-05, 05:41 PM Are you receiving a signal, jspENC?
It's been a while since I looked at the FCC records... I can't remember if that special temporary authority is new or not.
easternncnewswat 04-15-05, 05:43 PM No, you're right... That is new... Previously, it was a construction permit.
Well, they did say they were trying to get on air by the end of April. Maybe it will pop up soon; even with that extension they recently got. Maybe that extension is for WYDO.
The temp authority is new, I've been watching for it. I am not getting a signal, but I need to turn my antenna and today is just too windy! Wheeew!
I am just glad to see they have taken a first step to dtv and hope it won't be the last! LMAO!!
easternncnewswat 04-15-05, 06:27 PM Awesome! Maybe they aren't trying to drag it out till the end of analog broadcasting. Maybe WFXI will be up by the end of April.
Let us know when you get a signal/picture... I want to update my web page, but I think I'll hold off until you guys start seeing something. *LOL*
Griff will have the best chance of seeing something, but I will try tomorrow and see if I get anything at all. It should be channel 24 from what the permit says.
I am going to use an indoor ant. now and see if something happens... lol
easternncnewswat 04-15-05, 06:36 PM Cool... I can't wait to hear what Griff has to say! He'll be one happy camper unless WFXI is just SD. Then again, he might be just as happy that they are FINALLY on the air- if that's the case...
easternncnewswat 04-15-05, 06:39 PM I beleive the NAB is having a big conference this week. WFXI may not come on until next week or after. That's if the engineers are at the NAB convention with other station personnel.
I know there is a big conference going on in the Bahamas this weekend too that a lot of the meterologists are going to.
Maybe the FCC just updated their records for WFXI's upcoming sign on... Let us know if you get anything though...
From the map, it looks like they may have put put up a low power station on their microwave tower at the studio. If so, I doubt it will make it to Greenville or much less New Bern. Looks like it is to cover city of license and that would be Morehead City. Looks like it is about 130 ft high (44 meters) and will be only 5 kWs. Not a power house at all. If you live in the right spot in Morehead City you might be able to see something and the cable headend should have a view to it as well and not much more.
Looks like it has been accepted at the FCC but they haven't acted on it yet so WFI doesn't have authority to use it yet.
easternncnewswat 04-15-05, 06:44 PM Thanx foxeng... You always come to the rescue when we have questions!
easternncnewswat 04-15-05, 06:53 PM hey jspENC,
Maybe you will have the good news when they sign on! Keep checking every day!!! *LOL*
I always do a rescan periodically just in case I can pick up something new which never happens anymore.
Ever since I rearranged my living room, my reception blows in the worst kind of way! I can't use my dish contraption antenna so I can barely even get WCTI anymore... I have use my RCA Amplified antenna and move it across the room. I really wish WCTI had a translator station or something like WNCT does down in Morehead City- only digital! *LOL*
I see where WCTI wants to use a VHF 12 signal for its final dtv station placement. This should make it a bit easier to get, probably a lot easier. Also 7,8 and 11 want VHF. I hope 8 doesn't get there way.
easternncnewswat 04-15-05, 07:06 PM Yeah, I'm hoping 12 will be easier to get... I need it to be!
So Foxeng says they are not live yet? I wounder how we will know when they do? Unless they are just testing!

8 will probably end up there...
easternncnewswat 04-15-05, 07:11 PM I think foxeng is saying that WFXI isn't allowed to use their permit yet. Maybe WFXI is shooting for the end of April and the FCC is updating their records to reflect that. They might be doing some in house testing. Doubt the general public would be able to see it yet... Then again, maybe Griff can clear it up for us! Or foxeng can take a stab at it and edumacate us...
easternncnewswat 04-15-05, 07:13 PM foxeng,
Do you have any idea when the RDU stations owned by Sinclair might bump up the juice a bit?

The FCC accepted it on April 4th and usually they only take a few days after to grant the STA. When you see the FCC has it listed as Tendered for Filing, then it has been approved. The STAs are usually not kept posted on the web on the same schedule that the big apps are so it is possible that they may now have the STA but the web page doesn't reflect it yet. They can't even start testing until the FCC issues the STA. Now if they were building the full power facility, they can turn that on any time since the FCC has already authorized it.

Not a clue but since the Greensboro stations are at full power and they are working on the Asheville stations now, I would suspect that the Raleigh stations should be shortly.
easternncnewswat 04-15-05, 08:51 PM Cool! Thanx foxeng... It would be nice to see WB22 and UPN 28 once in a while. Hopefully, I'll be able to get those signals reliably once they go full power!
Griff Thomasson 04-17-05, 07:26 AM I,ll go play with my antennas and see what I come up with---- thats good news--- let you guys know----
Griff Thomasson 04-17-05, 07:52 AM I set my antenna at 76 deg- and rescanned and picked up nothing---- I did see on the maps on the FCC site that the tower is down east-- close to Harkers Island-- not off hyway 70 at the station - don,t know what to make of that--
Sent an e-mail over to fox 8 eng. asking when they were going up with test----
I think it is a stupid idea to have that tower down by the water. They need to move inland so people in Duplin and western Onslow can pick up a signal. I can't even get a watchable analog signal right now. If Channel 8 in Greensboro is in the way of WFXI they should change channel to UHF

The channel 8 site and the full power DTV site are out by Atlantic I believe it is. The STA low power site is at the studio on US 70 north of Morehead City according to FCC records. The low power is required to cover city of license only and that would be Morehead City so they need the low power transmitter close to Morehead City.
Since the splicer is placed at the studio, with the low power there, there is no need for a digital microwave and they could have the low power transmit HD. Now I am not saying they will, but the cost to do it would not cost them anymore than the cost of the HD encoder for the local upconvert would cost them (about $20k more) plus the cost of the low power system. The local cable could then pick up and send it out on their system further than their low power transmitter could take it.

They can't move the channel 8 any further west due to interference rules. Since WFXI was last on, they have to protect the other stations already on. Those would be channel 7 and 9 since the rules do not allow analogs to be on 1st adjacent channels within certain mileages and then the co-channel interference numbers are even tighter. On Channel 8, they have to protect channel 8 in Richmond and my channel 8 in High Point. Believe me, if they tried to move channel 8 closer west, my station would put up a fight and win it (so would channel 7, 9 and Richmond) with the current rules in place. So the channel 8 transmitter is at the only place they can put it.
Ok Foxeng Thank you for the insight as always! I just think the channel 8 idea was a bad one to start with. There were many UHF slots open they could have gotten when they first signed on I'm sure. I have gotten the channel 8 in Richmond before which is an ABC station, your station which is FOX, so I know they are a lot higher up on a tower than WFXI! I am willing to bet that from time to time WFXI has been really cut into by the other 2 stations to the point half of the viewing area was lost at least.
I am watching the nascar race coverage right now on WSFX, it is the only one I can see and hear. It is still quite snowy though!
Foxeng, in my post above I did not mean your station should go to UHF, I meant WFXI... LOL I think the way I said it, sounded like I was mad at your channel!
Now with the final digital channel settings being discussed, I see that 8 in Morehead and 8 in High Point both want 8 for digital again... I think someone may need to rethink things or it is going to be more interference issues... ? But since the rules in place now would approve these it will probably happen again, and WFXI will stay over the water. LMAO!

I knew you meant WFXI. No problem there.

It is really interesting about that. I had talked to the engineer at WFXI about 2 weeks before the election and point blank asked him which channel they would be on post transition and he unequivocally told me that both 14 and 8 would stay on their DTV assignments. When it got filed, both elected to go back to the analogs.
It is MUCH cheaper to operate a VHF DTV transmitter than a UHF transmitter. If WFXI is having so much financial problems, a UHF DTV would more than likely drive them into bankruptcy.
The interference numbers may be better for WFXI on digital 8 since WITN has elected to go back to 7 but WNCT will stay on 10 removing 1st adjacency interference from 9. WRIC in Richmond will stay on their UHF DTV channel so that interference will go away, which believe it or not causes more interference to WFXI than my station. The interference numbers between my station and WFXI are reduced by both stations going digital on channel 8 because it takes less digital power to cover the same analog area.
I do know that the FCC is on record that if a station can prove they are financially unable to build the second channel, the FCC will give them special dispensation until the analog cut-off date. The criteria for that is pretty stringent, and it looks like that WFXI has met it. You have to be able to prove over a 5 year period, I believe it is, that the station has been in financial trouble, and with the DTV extension filings, WFXI has proved that point. My guess (I have no knowledge, but just guessing after looking at the filings with the FCC to come to this conclusion) is they will never build a full power UHF DTV site and will just keep the low power on until analog shutdown and then do a flash cut to digital on channel 8. I suspect they will do the same thing with channel 14 as well. Now here is a scary thought. After the transition, they could apply to have 14 change channels to the now vacant channel 9 and with less power and antenna height, they could move 14 to 9 since the FCC does allow 1st adjancy DTV channels and that may be what they are thinking. You would then have WITN on DT 7 at Grifton, WFXI on DT 8 at Atlantic WYDO on DT 9 on thier Greenville tower at much reduced coverage than WNCT was on 9 and WNCT on DT 10 at Grifton. Because of the distances locations and channel assignments of the transmitters, the FCC would more than likely allow that. That is just a guess. I may be COMPLETELY WRONG. YMMV.
Griff Thomasson 04-17-05, 04:55 PM Would fox 8 be able to beam up HD programming to the satellite system with the low power set up they are doing---????
I watched the Nascar coverage off Sat. ----- good race---- poor reseption even off Sat. as they are being sent a poor signal- from Fox 14----

If a service offered HD for that market, yes. But I suspect that it will a few years before that happens for that market. The service would either put in a fiber optic line or put a central receive site in the Morehead City area to pick it up since they would also be able to pick up the other digital stations needed for the market.
Griff Thomasson 04-17-05, 05:05 PM We Love fox programming and that is what we watch the most of- but lately we surf channels for HD shows that we can watch! I guess we are just Screwed of any chance pf getting Fox in HD any time soon---- I have been told by DTV that in a few months we should be able to get it but I will believe it when I see it---
This is the way I feel, if the owners of our FOX affiliate cant give us a dt signal on the channels the FCC gave them or can't get a loan, and can't cover the whole market, then FFS sell the damn channels to someone who can. This is the biggest bunch of BS I have ever heard. Why should they not have to meet the status that other channels have been forced to do. File Bankruptsy and get out of Eastern North Carolina. If PAX can do it, they can do it too. I hope all other market stations come together and complain to the FCC that they have gone digital and expect FOX to do the same, and that it is just not exceptable for them to keep holding out on the good people of ENC.
Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest...
easternncnewswat 04-17-05, 06:31 PM This is all kind of whack in my opinion... I mean, I have an understanding of how expensive it is for stations to move to digital. From other people and the engineers here who have been forthcoming about how costly the equipment, etc. is, it's obvious that a lot of capital is needed.
I guess what I don't understand is how Fox 8/14 or their parent company could be in this kind of dire straights. When you look at Fox as a network, the fact that they were supplying at least some equipment to the affiliates, advertising rates for national and local spots that are generated, etc., how can the company that owns Fox 8/14 not have the funds or have planned ahead for this inevitability? From my understanding, the company that owns Fox 8/14 owns other stations across the country; are they having this many problems with their other stations? Or is it the fact that they have 2 channels they have to build out?
It's really sad that viewers are getting the shaft here, but then again Nielsen isn't measuring HD viewers yet. So, right now, it's all guesswork I assume as to how many HD viewers there are in Eastern NC. I can't imagine it's a huge number. This area of the state is certainly more economically challenged than the triangle, triad, or whatever they're called the Charlotte metro area these days. It's just a shame that the early adopters are getting the short end of the stick.
This is one of those times that I wouldn't mind seeing a huge company swallow Fox 8/14 whole to get the whole mess resolved. By the time it is, analog will be no more. What a disappointment!
easternncnewswat 04-17-05, 06:38 PM Has anybody seen that WNCT is taking viewer comments on Eyewitness News 9? I caught the tail end of it during the Saturday Weekend Edition at 6 but didn't have time to capture it for my web page...
I was ready tonight at 6, but they didn't run it. I really want an opportunity to give my input. I just didn't get time to jot down the e-mail address Owen tossed out during the news. If anybody has it let me know...

That is what I would like to know. FOx is providing most of the equipment from what I hear. That is why I just cannot understand how 8/14 can pull this junk.
Maybe we should contact FOX coorperate?
I do not think many in ENC get HD over the air. People around here mostly have cable or a dish. Antenna reception is great for all channels but FOX. Even just 5 miles away from the 14 tower people say it is snowy. I am surprised I can even see a little bit of a picture from them down here. I am a good 45 miles away. Pax 38 on a shorter tower on the other hand is almost snow free, and at times is perfect, I just don't get it...
People around here have tried all kinds of antennas and can't get FOX good. I figured with digital coming on that surely they would have to be a clear and strong signal provider, and would be on air by now, but here I sit still in the white zone...

They said to e-mail the newsdesk with the title VIEWERS VOICE and tell what you like or don't like about the station, what you want to see or don't. Personally I would like to see Restaurant Reports like they do on WRAL with the sanitation.
e-mail i think was newsdesk@wnct.com
easternncnewswat 04-17-05, 06:50 PM Thanx jspENC! I really wanted to capture that for my webpage cause I've been telling everybody I can about it. I really would like to get the viewers in Eastern NC excited about their locals! *LOL*
The other thing is, I think this might be a good way for WNCT to get feedback for what viewers might want to see if they start up a 24/7 News/Weather channel on 9.2. I'm stoked to be given this chance to participate in giving feedback on our local's news operations!
I'd like to see the Restaurant thing to... I wouldn't mind being the reporter doing that segment cause I've worked in restaurant's before. I'd love to bust some restaurant's for uncleanliness! *LOL*
WNTC said they would read some of the requests on air during 6pm news, should be interesting!

The only thing FOX is supplying is the splicer equipment. The transmitter, antenna, feedline and digital path from the studio to transmitter and any upconverting equipment, the station has to supply. If the station doesn't have the basics in place, the splicer doesn't do any good.

The short answer is yes according to the FCC filings.
easternncnewswat 04-17-05, 07:25 PM Well, that answers that question! *LOL*
Foxeng,
What is te cut-off date now for analog? I was hearing 2006, now I have heard it could be 2010!? If this is the case I just as well get a 26 db amp and go for FOX 30 dt Wilmington which is 60 miles away... I am a little worried I will not get them, since the transmitter field plot is so much toward the west rather than to the north.
Eastern I read your site update!
You know why WITN won for weekend news right? Because WNCT had the ball games during the month of FEB, and had almost no 6 or 11 news on-time, if at all!

There still isn't a date yet. It is still when 85% of a market can receive the digital stations. I suspect this summer Congress will come up with a date. Most are thinking Jan 1, 2009.
easternncnewswat 04-17-05, 07:43 PM Unfortunately, I'm taking the info directly from WITN's ads... At this time, I can't independently confirm those results. Besides, I just report the news... I can't give my opinion on why! *LOL*
Between me and you though, I don't consider it a win, when you have to buy the viewers with 7 feet of cash! Granted, WITN didn't go that route during the last book, but with WNCT winning at 6 and 11 during the week during February, I wonder if 7 feet of cash on WITN will make a comeback when May sweeps roll around?
I'm actually thinking of starting a blog with my opinions, etc here soon with my next Remember When update. We'll see how that pans out though...
But you're right, that's probably why... I wonder if WCTI won at 11 on Sunday nights though with Desperate Housewives leading into it? And I wonder if Dr. Phil has hurt them at 5? Unfortunately, I've heard next to nothing on WCTI's ratings for the last book...
I don't even have a clue how to find out anything except your web-site eastern, thank you for updating us!
I don't like the bragging WITN does, but we know who really cares in ENC about the public, and I have to say it is WCTI and WNCT all the way.

OK foxeng, hopefully prices of digital equipment will continue to fall.
easternncnewswat 04-17-05, 07:59 PM Trade secret on how I get my info... *LOL*
Well, WITN is definately trying to take the lead in Eastern NC. I mean, that's the whole reason that they've done 7 feet of Cash. They're trying to get viewers to turn to them for all their news by making them watch it so much. Unfortunately, it just comes off as sour to me when you pull those stunts.
Don't get me wrong, all news operations try to "hook" their audience, but WITN has taken it too far in my opinion. Unfortunately, I think WNCT might be falling into the trap that WITN is setting. This back and forth Doppler war is getting a little nauseating to me! And I think the rest of the public is going to get fed up with it eventually.
Then again, you never know...
easternncnewswat 04-17-05, 08:07 PM The only problem I've seen with WCTI is the same I've always seen. Someone mentioned once that WCTI almost feels like a different market all together. They are always so southern tier focused, which is their market also, but it leaves Greenville, Washington out of the loop.
Additionally, I think WCTI's production values are probably the worst in the market. Don't get me wrong, it's improved over the year's, but the newscast isn't as "crisp" looking as the other station's.
Right now, I think WNCT has the best on air look, but WITN is right up there with them. I think an overhaul of WITN's set is in order. Those picture inserts behind the anchors are hillarious and I'm not the only person whose ever mentioned that.
I like WCTI's new HD monitor but it is so out of place on the set. The other monitor they used to have fit in much better. I think some stainless steel or something is in order over at WCTI. It might be time for them to update their "look" to go with that new monitor. A friend of mine mentioned the big Eastern NC coast background of theirs and thought it was nearly as silly as WITN's cut out's. *LOL*
My opinion though is that the big coast background is better than nothing at all. At least it adds some color to that tan, etc.
Paying people to watch a station is rotten. It makes me sick to be honest, I have never heard of any other legit news channel doing this.
I hope WNCT does not fall into their trap. And like you I feel the doppler war is just childish, and other people in our area that live near Raleigh say they are sick of it and are tuning to the WRAL and WTVD news. I wish I could too at times but it is just too snowy here.
I say forget WITN's crap, because the viewers are speaking out, and they do not like it, at least that tends to be the way the ratings show it...
easternncnewswat 04-17-05, 09:11 PM Time will tell...
I sent in my e-mail to WNCT regarding feeback on their news. I had about 7 items that I thought were feasible. Now, I'll just have to wait and see if anything gets mentioned on air! *LOL*
Thanx for the info and the e-mail address, jspENC!
Griff Thomasson 04-18-05, 05:24 AM Guys I have just read posts about Fox8/14- I agree 100% with all that you have said and feel the same way!! I have complained to Fox corp---in writing , I have complained to Direct TV of how poor the signal is that they are receiving--, I have complained to the station and was blown off-!!! I have written my congressman - about this - as things stand now we have no options other than just live with it!!!! Thats the bummer!!!
The only place I can think of that I have not complained is with the advertisers that use fox8/14--- I do hope that some pressure has been brought on this grope to get it done-----
Griff Thomasson 04-18-05, 01:40 PM Question- If you were going to buy a tuner to recieve the OTA digital and HD programming what would you buy????
easternncnewswat 04-18-05, 01:42 PM I bought the Samsung T-351... I like it, but I would prefer something that's more flexible and maybe better multipath error correction. Anything with a stronger/better tuner is a-ok in my book! *LOL*
I have a motorola HDT-100 and it is a strong performer, but the Closed caption comes on without me turning it on, and if the power is disrupted you have to re-scan everything and it takes a good 5 minutes...
How long has Oprah been on UPN 48 at 7pm?
easternncnewswat 04-18-05, 06:56 PM That must be new; I've never seen that before...
easternncnewswat 04-18-05, 06:58 PM jspENC,
Did you see if Eyewitness News 9 read any viewer comments during the news tonight? I was at work so I couldn't see the broadcast...
Also, I guess Kontji Anthony's last day was Friday. I got up this morning to see if it was her last show, but Marti Skold was doing the news. Owen Conflenti mentioned last night that he is taking mornings for a while starting tomorrow.
Where did Kontji go? I didn't see the last newscast with her.
I missed the news tonight too eastern, so I was wondering what might have been discussed too.
easternncnewswat 04-18-05, 07:59 PM I'm not sure... I posted on my website that they were advertising for a new morning anchor. WNCT is also advertising for a new weekend anchor.
Owen mentioned last night that he takes over the morning newscast tomorrow. Marti anchored this morning.
So, I'm wondering if Kontji is already gone or headed out soon... Owen made it sound like it would be a while before he was back on weekends; longer than just to cover a 2 week vacation for Kontji or whatnot.
So, I'm very curious as to what is going on since I didn't see the morning or noon news on Friday. I'm thinking that it must have been her last day. I mean, WNCT doesn't have a 5 or 5:30 newscast for Kontji to move up to...
Hopefully, some info will come down the pipe soon...
jamieh1 04-19-05, 04:20 PM Last Thursday was her last day. they showed showed a slide that said Good luck Kontji, we'll miss you, I didnt hear where shes going.
easternncnewswat 04-19-05, 06:41 PM Thanx for the info, jamielee! Not sure how I missed that... I was home Thursday! *LOL*
ANalog signals are wild tonight, I can get 8 14 26 and 50 at an exceptable level. 26 is the best as far as clarity, but color on 26 and14 are bad. 8 is beautifully colored!
I think Ken12 may have worked on the audio. I can now get center channel audio and surround sound thru the digital fiber optic. I am not sure if he did anything or if I just now pressed the right button on my audio receiver! LOL
If you did work on things Ken, thanks!
Sorry no changes here
Ken
Ok Ken, thought maybe you had turned some knobs or something since I now had pro-logic working good last night.
I am still confused about why some shows give L R and center channel audio and others shows on the same channel just give center channel audio when I use pro-logic. I like the sound the best when I have just the voice coming from the center and the music and applause coming from the other speakers. 7& 35 do it a little on most shows and 19 does it well on all shows. The woofer seems to work at all times on all channels.
When I am in Dolby Digital I get voice and sound from both L and R only with no center channel audio unless the show is in HD. But when it is not in HD it would seem that the receiver should change over to Pro-logic, but it does not.
Confused yet?! LMAO!!:D
Eastern,
saw your tech. difficulty headline. I have had the same thing happen at 11:00 on WITN Sat. nights. I would get either a black screen with no news or the color bars. When Saturday Night Live comes on though everything is OK again. Someone is not working the controls right on certain nights!

Yeah, WITN tends to have a black screen or color bars a lot when transitioning out of network programming whether during the week or weekends. Not sure what the problem is, but it's ongoing. Neither WCTI or WNCT has these problems. Not that I've ever seen anyway.
WHERE IS VIPIR RADAR?
The last several days all I have seen is Neigborhood radar on 9.2
easternncnewswat 04-22-05, 06:48 PM Maybe they are only going to use VIPIR for active weather. Or maybe they are experiencing some tech issues with it. Or maybe they are upgrading the system.
I read the other day that some upgrades are coming to stations with Live VIPIR. They were showed off at the NAB convention last week.
I think it's probably the first thing I mentioned. They'll use it for active weather; when there are storms headed this way.
Maybe the up-grades are coming in to WNCT. WWAY has already got them I think cause they are playng with their VIPIR right now.:)
They call it the SUPER DOPPLER NETWORK. Those radars are fast!
Griff Thomasson 04-23-05, 05:19 PM Remember guys when you are pointing we have a 9 deg correction off true north here- so If it,s 250 deg to get a certain station the true setting would be 241 degs - all this checks out with my antennas and antennaweb.org does not address this ----
I got a high gain amplifier today with RG-6 cable and what a difference! I get FOX 14 with a little snow and FOX 26 without any snow! Also I can get digital without the pixelation on Pax or PBS 39 from Wilmington. It was worth the money to see clear reception on FOX I guess... lol
Did anyone find out if WFXI was up on their low power transmitter in Morehead City?
Griff Thomasson 04-24-05, 07:51 AM I pointed antenna at them fox 8---last night and scanned for them - did not pick up digital- sig.
I watched the race last night on Fox 26----- better than Fox 8/14 off sat.
banshee740 04-24-05, 03:38 PM when is FOX 50 going full power?
easternncnewswat 04-24-05, 03:42 PM According to their engineer, they are supposed to go to 1 MW by July... There is someone on the Raleigh thread asking if they have increased power cause he is getting it at the same strength as WRAL now. We are still waiting to hear from the engineer. I haven't checked my signal strength on WRAZ yet today...
easternncnewswat 04-24-05, 03:44 PM Originally posted by Griff Thomasson

Bummer on not picking up anything, Griff! Keep checking this week; the GM of WFXI said earlier in the year that they would sign on by the end of April. We'll see though...
Actually, I guess you or jspENC will see before anybody else though! :D
banshee740 04-24-05, 03:48 PM somehow i can pick up Fox 50 at around 55% at this moment and usually i get 10% around this time of the day.
watching star wars on fox 50 right now...
easternncnewswat 04-24-05, 03:58 PM Hmmm... I'll have to check out WRAZ! Maybe they've upped the juice. It could be atmospheric but the tropo forecast didn't call for anything special today...
easternncnewswat 04-24-05, 04:02 PM I'm getting them at 90% like WRAL as well. I've positioned my antenna where I usually cannot get WRAZ and I'm pulling it. Not sure if it's higher output or atmospheric. Time will tell or the engineer will...
easternncnewswat 04-24-05, 04:17 PM I'm thinking it might be an atmospheric fluke... I'm getting WCTI a lot easier than I normally would. Hopefully we'll know for sure pretty soon...
I went to Fox 8 web-site to see if there was any info on there about digital and of course got nothing about it... I did notice that they have the engineers e-mail address wrong again and they took away the coverage map they once displayed. I guess they are ashamed of it! LOL
easternncnewswat 04-24-05, 07:22 PM jspENC,
Are you having any luck getting Fox 50 tonight?
easternncnewswat 04-24-05, 08:13 PM Looks like it's down for some reason. Don't know why yet; maybe for higher quality HD presentation of "Locusts"?
Nah, somebody was playing on the computer... I got to see a love letter being written, somebody searching job listings and all sorts of stuff... Wonder if I should classify that on my site as a blooper or technical difficulty? I definitely think it deserves to be displayed for everyone to see! *LOL*
I wonder what this will mean for PAX 35/38?
http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA526901.html?display=Breaking+News&referral=SUPP
easternncnewswat 04-25-05, 02:33 PM Well, NBC from what I read is fighting PAX tooth and nail about this. PAX will probably end up bankrupt from the ensuing legal battle cause NBC isn't going to let it go without a fight or someone is going to come in and purchase PAX outright. I've read that Byron Allen, maybe, wants to buy out PAX but has yet to raise enough money yet. He would then transform it into a "legit" network. We'll see what happens...
I would love for FOX to take over the Pax channels (run by someone else) and then Maybe the WB come in on 8/14 and clean that mess up! WNCT then could give us WB news at ten or something... Man I am dreaming up a lot of good stuff today!
easternncnewswat 04-25-05, 03:18 PM *LOL*
Easternnc,
I went out and turned my UHF toward Raleigh and still get nothing, I think I am just too far. On a good ducting night I probably will get it if I turn the antenna. I need a rotator for all this but I just hate to run another line into the TV...
easternncnewswat 04-25-05, 06:39 PM I figured you were pretty far out to receive Fox 50, jspENC, but I thought I'd ask you anyway. Maybe they haven't up the strength... Right now, it's a guessing game cause we haven't heard one way or the other yet.
I posted that we thought WRAZ had increased over at ilmhd, maybe some of those folks will let me know if they get it.
easternncnewswat 04-25-05, 09:11 PM jspENC,
In case you haven't read about it yet, you should see WECT launch a new sub-channel here soon. WECT is owned by Raycom Media and it is launching a new music video channel called the Tube Music Network. Raycom plans to launch it on all it's stations across the country and is negotiating with other station groups for carriage on their sub-channels.
You can read about it at my website; I posted a link to the story.
Let us know when you see it pop up and tell us what it looks like with WECT running HD on the main channel and Weather Plus on it's secondary channel.
Griff Thomasson 04-26-05, 05:22 AM I caled WFXI yesterday and receptionist did not know if they had turned on the digital signal - call the station eng. and got no answer did not return my call-----
I turned my antennas last night to see if I could pick up WRAZ- got analog snowy no digital signal - would not lock on
Eaternnc, beleive it or not I cannot receive WECT 44 dt. It is too low on the transmitter for me to pick it up. I have only been able to receive it one time and that was when I picked up Charleston SC stations.
But on the same tower a few hundred feet higher is WUNJ PBS 29 dt and I can get that with no trouble at all, and it is at a much lower power than WECT. I think WECT just went cheapo on its viewers!
easternncnewswat 04-26-05, 08:23 AM Ah, didn't realize that jspENC... I was reading over at ilmhd and saw you had mentioned that you had seen WeatherPlus running with WECT HD. I just assumed you could pick it up full time. Is WECT now at full power or are they still at a low power output? Maybe you will eventually be able to get them...
jamieh1 04-26-05, 10:25 AM witntv.com still has pin point weather available on its site, still around sorta.
easternncnewswat 04-26-05, 10:49 AM Thanx for the info, jamielee. Nice to see you're still here with us!
Griff Thomasson 04-26-05, 01:36 PM Just talked to WXFI eng. he said it would be a couple more weeks till they bring the digital channel up - channel 24-----

You mixed up those letters for WFXI Griff,:D I wish it was WXFI--maybe it would be better?!
I'll try and aim my antenna toward the Station in a couple of weeks and see what happens. I will believe the timeline when I see it though, since nothing has been on schedule yet.
Easternnc, I have been playing with my antenna and amp for over an hour and still cannot get WECT to hold. I get a bouncing signal from 100-0 or from 0-79. I don't know if its my junk receiver or my antenna or what but it is just poor enough not to work... In the process of all this I have lost 2 stations.
easternncnewswat 04-26-05, 03:18 PM Originally posted by jspENC

Ouch! I feel your pain, jspENC... Ever since I rearranged my living room, I had to ditch my home made dish antenna and I've lost WB22 and a couple of other low powered stations from the RDU market. Sux!
I may have to take my receiver and computer to New Bern and see if I can pick up WECT on my parent's antenna for some screen caps. I'd love to see what the Tube looks like when it comes online. With their antenna, they can pick up WWAY and WECT analog. Maybe they could pick up digital too... I'll have to test that theory sometime! *LOL*
Griff Thomasson 04-26-05, 03:45 PM Jsp sorry for the letter mix up ------LOL----- I can not pick up WECT either---
banshee740 04-26-05, 05:38 PM have you guys heard about that new sharpshooter indoor multidirectional antenna?
fox50 has been up and stable for over two days and the signal strength is same as WRAL so i guess it's safe to say that they've bumped up the power
can't wait to watch American Idol in HD tonight
so what are the other low power stations besides WB22? i can only watch WB22 late at night
easternncnewswat 04-26-05, 05:57 PM The only other low powered stations I've picked up are WRDC UPN 28 on 27.1, WRPX 47 on 15.1, 15.2, 15.3, and 15.4, and WRAY 30, Shop At Home, on 42.1 from Wilson. Not really concerned about Shop At Home on WRAY, but I'd really like to have WRDC. An engineer mentioned not long ago that Sinclair is currently working on the Asheville, NC market, so he thought that RDU might be coming up soon for a power increase. That would mean both WB22 and UPN28 might be able to be receivable in Greenville - maybe a little bit further!

I haven't heard about the new antenna, but wouldn't mind knowing more now that you've mentioned it! *LOL*
Yeah, I'm think WRAZ must've bumped up the power too. I'm getting a better signal than ever before.
Did anybody see the plasma utilized in the first segment of Eyewitness News 9 tonight? That was hot looking! :D
banshee740 04-26-05, 07:40 PM WRAL is not working...
easternncnewswat 04-26-05, 07:43 PM Yeah, I posted in the Raleigh thread... I am also not receiving NBC 17 for some reason. I'm still getting Fox 50 and ABC 11 which are right there with WRAL and WNCN in signal strength for me. Not sure what is going on...
I sent an e-mail to WRAL last night about their PSIP problem. It hasn't been adjusted for the time change a few weeks ago. I find it odd that they would work on it during Prime Time though...
Maybe it's something else...
How're you likeing American Idol in HD, banshee?
banshee740 04-26-05, 07:48 PM compare with SD, HD has sharper picture and better sound quality (can't figure out how to do 5.1 surround on my ati hdtv wonder) and of course, 16:9
banshee740 04-26-05, 07:49 PM i have no problem with NBC 17
easternncnewswat 04-26-05, 07:59 PM At least one Raleigh OTA viewer can't receive WRAL either.
easternncnewswat 04-26-05, 08:46 PM banshee,
I did a rescan of my channels and now receive WRAL. The PSIP grid information has not been corrected, but maybe they were trying to work on it and that's why WRAL wasn't receivable for a while.
Easternc, I have seen WNCT use the plasma on several occasions. They wheel it in and out very quickly. They have had it probably a year and a half. They only use it for the Jacksonville Newsroom reports and then push it away from the desk quickly!
Also I have a quest... When will WNCT start reading some of the comments that viewers sent in?
jamieh1 04-27-05, 05:15 PM easternncnewswat, heres some bloopers for you, go to WCTI web site click on webcast of news, it shows skip for about 10 seconds getting ready to come on air before news starts, camera moving around, etc, check it out.
Click NEWS link to left then youll see 12 news at 6 with daily links, several with blunders.

I like the set with the plasma; I think it looks VERY upscale. Works well with their set The should use it for all live shots in my opinion.
I wonder about the comments too; I've yet to see any. They are probably waiting till the start of May Sweeps tomorrow. After all, WITN starts 7 feet of Cash tomorrow... *LOL* Everybody has an angle... :D

Yeah, I'm going profile the news station's websites and their advertising for them on my website eventually. I've been doing some capturing the past week trying to get as much as possible for that.
WCTI had a major blowout last night on the rebroadcast at 10 on UPN 48. Skip finally got to the desk about 3-5 minutes in and covered till they got the tape up and running. It was a riot!
I missed the WCTI fluke easternncnewswat! I wish i had seen it. LOL!!
easternncnewswat 04-27-05, 11:26 PM It happened again tonight, jspENC! Skip even said when he got the desk that for the second night in a row that they were having technical difficulties with the prerecorded news! It was funny the way he said it too.
I'm thinking they just need to go ahead and do a full newscast at 10 with all the problems they're having with the prerecorded version! *LOL*
I'm still waiting for something to pop up on 12.2 someday... One can dream anyway! *LOL*
If only ota HD was like a 29.3 stream...
jamieh1 04-28-05, 10:26 AM Why is 9.2 so pixelated. It looks terrible?
9.2 looks very dim for me. And that map is neighborhood 9 and not Live doopler Vipir 9

Stay tuned.
Mike Weeks
Looks like something may be happening on this front here soon... WITN is currently looking to add a fourth meterologist to it's staff.
My understanding of station's running Weather Plus, at least, is that they have brought in an additional met to supplement their existing staff. I would imagine with any type of 24/7 channel, additional staff would be required. We'll see if WITN picks up Weather Plus, an Accu Weather version announced about a month ago, or something that we haven't quite seen before.
I wouldn't imagine anything would happen until after the sweeps when all that revenue is generated! :D

Yeah, that was pretty awesome; I saw it as well! :D
I'm Jealous. I think I will move inland! It steams me the way other stations around us have worked so hard to give us digital and Fox is screwing us royally.
easternncnewswat 05-02-05, 10:50 AM Remember what Griff said about a week ago, WFXI 24 should be up in about a week or so. Keep an eye out for it, jspENC! And let us know if it's SD or HD and whether or not you can receive it.
I'll look out for WFXi but I am not holding my breath yet!
Griff Thomasson 05-02-05, 04:03 PM Don,t hold your breath- how many times haveWFXI they said something and then nothing----- even if they do go up with a digital sig. it will only be very low power----500 watts--- from what I understand- and antenna mounted low- only going up to meet license requirements for Morehead City-- so none of us will be able to get it----
What station told me was to get Cox cable------ what a blow off----
easternncnewswat 05-02-05, 04:25 PM Well, it's probably just as has been suggested - the bare minimum till analog runs out, then they don't have to spend as much money to build out for digital.
Griff Thomasson 05-03-05, 05:15 AM Guys I may not be able to get Fox programming in HD- but I have to say this - we sure are enjoying watching some of the old movies in HD--- it,s like we have never seen them before---- watched Movie 2 of the star wars group last night and picture was better than what we saw in the theater--The Lord of the Rings - blew us away---- special effects in HD were unbeliveable---
Our older VHS tapes do not look that good but anything we have on CD wow---
Read a news release yesterday here on this site that says that Sony and Toshiba are working together to resolve the DVD format issues that exist - so that we don,t have the old Beta- VHS- thing all over again--
I spent some time last night looking over old records for channel 8. The original plans called for the tower to reach over 1,600 ft. Then they were brought back down to the 800 ft level we have now. If those original plans had gone through, I would have no problem picking up channel 8 as I do now.
Another note, last night I once again received WSCS dt CBS from Charleston and another SC station on 49 dt. Yet I could not receive WECT dt 44 which is only 55 miles away!
cpanther1 05-03-05, 02:39 PM As the Crow Flies I am only 35 miles fron WECT Digital and can not receive it.
Over at ilmhd I have seen postings there from I believe the Monkey Juncton area that have sporadic reception of 44dt.
cpanther,
Are you able to get FOX via channel 49 dt now?
As far as Wect I think they need to re-think there current location. They have that 2000' tower over at White Lake that would have been the ideal location. I wonder what they will do with it when analog is shut off?
cpanther1 05-04-05, 05:46 AM Nope I will get a directional antenna later this year.

I think the problem with that tower (the analog one, correct?) is that it's too far from Wilmington to provide City Grade coverage over the entire city of Wilmington. On Channel 6 this wasn't a problem, since VHF signals travel farther than UHF, but on channel 44 this is likely a bigger problem. Now my measurements show their old tower to be 37 miles from downtown Wilmington. This is usually right at the very very edge of city grade coverage for a UHF.
I think the FCC would let a station get by with it (see WDAZ-8/22 in Devil's Lake, ND) but in this case, WECT's primary target is Wilmington, so they probably wanted to ensure that Wilmington would have an easy time with the signal.
- Trip
I never thought of that Trip. I guess mainly because I live 61 miles from the WWAY channel 46 tower and get them at 100% without an amp! But I have heard that WECT studios itself had to get an amplified antenna to receive their own digital signal. So it is not that easy for Wilmington either.
Can someone tell me what is on channel 15? I have picked it up while scanning and get a solid signa, but my receiver is rejecting it. They must have some sort of PSIP problem?.
jamieh1 05-04-05, 11:24 AM Its ch 47.1 47.2 47.3 47.4 PAX from RDU area if I can remember correctly from the times I got it.

Griff Thomasson 05-04-05, 03:07 PM I talked to Terry today eng. from Fox/8 asked about progress on getting up digital signal- said they were working as we spoke---- they will not be putting up any HD content soon only SD ---- they are testing - equipment- no modulation yet- said all we would see was black-------?
Thanks Jamielee and Easternc.
I will not waist anymore time trying to get that channel since its PAX>
Griff can you get the FOX signal now? If so you will lock it and it will be a blank screen I guess!

Griff Thomasson 05-05-05, 05:27 AM JSP I did not even try to pick up Fox /8 last night---
MY antennas are being blown around like twigs yet again... Surprisingly though I have not lost one station! :)
Well I lost the antenna s to the storm. They are on the ground, so not many channels left to watch. I will try to repair them by tomorrow night... I am so sick of this wind.
Griff Thomasson 05-06-05, 04:36 PM Jsp- sorry you lost your antennas----- we had some very high winds here today- I thought my antennas were gone but they held up---- did rip shade cloth off arborum- tore down a section of vinyl fence- and broke a lace leaf Japanese maple in half----- I,m sick over the tree - nursed that tree for 12 years now----
JSP what size mast are you using-?? May want to go up to a larger pipe----
Well the pipe is ok, but the bracket pulled out! Antennas are OK too. All I need to do is re attach the bracket, and erect everything again. I lost a small Dogwood tree and branches, leaves and trees down everywhere. I would guess the wind was about 85 MPH in gusts. Rain measured 6.5 inches and the yards are saturated!
Ken12,
Starting at 9pm I was getting no dialogue on 12.1
easternncnewswat 05-06-05, 08:11 PM I've got dialogue on 12.1 and 12.3 at 9:12.
Thats strange Eastern, I only get dialogue during comercials. It started when Hope & Faith came on. Are you using Dolby digital? I get dialogue fine on WWAY 3.2 right now by the way.
A lot of analog viewers are a little upset tonight that WCTI is off line. I told them they should get digital! :)
easternncnewswat 05-08-05, 09:55 PM Yikes! What happened to cause WCTI analog to go down on one of ABC's biggest nights of the week- and during Sweeps no less? I imagine there are some ticked off people! I'm glad I was able to watch Desperate Househookahs on WCTI-DT!!!
easternncnewswat 05-08-05, 09:59 PM When WFXI does sign on, I want a night of EXTREME!!! ducting so I can get some screencaps! *LOL*
banshee740 05-08-05, 11:56 PM http://moka.smugmug.com/photos/5806783-L.jpg
I am going to erect my antennas once again today, and will check for WFXI at that time to see what is up.
OK everyone I just finished the antenna and now have both pointed more inland than before. I get stronger signals than ever! I checked WFXI and there is definetly a signal on, but it is just a bit too weak for me to grab, and I have two big trees in the direction of Morehead, so that could be my problem.
easternncnewswat 05-09-05, 06:16 PM Wow! Congrats jspENC and thanx for the good news that WFXI is actually on the air! I think that must qualify for a miracle in Eastern NC broadcasting!!! *LOL*
easternncnewswat 05-09-05, 06:17 PM Um, does anybody know what's up with Skip Waters in that pic above? Banshee, you care to chime in on that one?
Griff Thomasson 05-09-05, 06:28 PM JSP I,ll have to point my stuff that way and see what I can pick up----glad you got your antennas back up---
I got to see the race from Darlington in High definition- I was there----!!!!!
OH MY GOD I am getting WECT digital WRAL digital and WTVD digital!!!!!!! ANd WPDE DIGITAL FROM FLORENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
easternncnewswat 05-09-05, 06:59 PM WOOHOO, jspENC! Is that from your re-aiming your antenna?
I have them both aimed a little different now and that has made all the difference in the world!
easternncnewswat 05-09-05, 07:03 PM Cool! Good for you! Maybe once the sun goes down you'll be able to pick up WRAZ...
I am getting an ABC on analog 25 I have no idea where it is located!
easternncnewswat 05-09-05, 07:22 PM No clue! Maybe Columbia, SC or Myrtle Beach?
Nah, not Myrtle Beach, they're on 13... Maybe further down South?
I am also gertting fox 24 and 43
easternncnewswat 05-09-05, 07:36 PM What's fox 24; 43 is Norfolk I believe...
FOX 24 is Myrtle Beach or Charleston I think.
easternncnewswat 05-09-05, 07:47 PM Are you getting all this stuff digital or analog? Some of the distance one's tonight are analog right? I know you've gotten some pretty far digital stations from what you've mentioned...
The FOX 24 is digital and the FOX 43 is analog. I also am getting channel 49 digital, but it is coming from Charleston as CBS, is't that WRAZ's digital channel as well?
easternncnewswat 05-09-05, 07:57 PM Yeah, 49 is WRAZ's digital channel also.
I guess the way I am aiming WRAZ is not likely. Too much interference. And right now I have lost some channels, so I guess the weather is interfering too.
Both PBS HD channels I get are now in DD 5.1 surround!
Trip in VA 05-10-05, 05:50 AM ABC on 25 - WOLO-25 Columbia, SC
13 in Florence - WBTW-13 CBS
Fox on 24 - WTAT Charleston, SC (analog)
Fox on 43 - WVBT Virginia Beach, VA OR WFXB Myrtle Beach, SC
- Trip
easternncnewswat 05-10-05, 10:55 AM Griff,
Did you ever get a chance to see if you could pick up and decode WFXI DT 24?
jspENC,
When you picked up WECT last night, did you see if they were airing Weather Plus and the Tube music video channel?
Easternncnewswat,
WECT had a blank screen on 6.2 with weather plus audio only. Now the first and only other time I got WECT they had weather plus working good.
No music channel was on yet, not even a 6.3 up and running
Griff Thomasson 05-10-05, 06:42 PM eastern I will try Wxfi---- Dt - tonight see what I get------
I forgot to mention that PAX 35 is running smoothly now woth all subs working. The problem was with the PSIP equipment. The picture quality is excellent even with all the channels on. And Dolby surround is great.
Griff Thomasson 05-11-05, 05:05 AM I tried picking up WXFI - dt last night - picked up nothing ----????
I guess WFXI is still testing maybe? Because I am certain that I was detecting some kind of activity on their channel day before yesterday around 5 or 6 pm
THis is wild, I am having to watch Idol on WTAT Charleston. No FOX clear in our own market and 24 is clearer than 26!
easternncnewswat 05-11-05, 08:22 PM *LOL* Glad tropo is working out alright for you tonight, jspENC!
FOX 14 keeps breaking up as usual, they still have STL issues...
WCSC HD dt47 is wide open tonite! CBS 5.1
easternncnewswat 05-11-05, 09:03 PM I've been having pretty good luck myself tonight... I'm using an attenuator with my RCA amplified antenna and have regained a few of the channels I'd lost in my living room rearranging. Now, I just hope tonight isn't a fluke and I can keep them! *LOL*
I hope your luck continues too Eastern, but I think you could really pick up a whole lot more if you put an antenna outside. While my antenna was down I could not get anything but WITN and WCTI, and they kept breaking up all the time.
banshee740 05-11-05, 09:23 PM yeah what's with fox8 tonight? i was at my girlfirend's house watching american idol on her mom's wega 42 inch plasma (sdtv cuz they don't have hd package but cox doesn't get wraz anyway) and got no signal.
but we were able to watch anthony get booted off...
easternncnewswat 05-11-05, 09:34 PM Well, I'd like to do an antenna and know I can cause of that FCC ruling, but I live in a duplex community and really don't want to go to the trouble. Lazy I guess... *LOL*
I have thought about getting an old UHF antenna at my folks house and putting in my attic with a preamp and see what that does. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.
As long as I can get the locals around here and RDU I'm pretty satisfied. The one that I've been struggling with is WB22 which always gives me a hassle. If they ever go full power, I'd be real happy! Same goes for UPN28; just to have it. I'm not concerned with PAX since it seems they are destined for failure- paid programming! Give me a break!
Sorry, banshee, I missed the problem with Fox 8/14 tonight as I was watching WRAZ. BTW, what was up with the Skip Waters pic you posted?
banshee740 05-11-05, 11:15 PM ^ oh about that skip waters pic... since so many ppl were pissed off at wcti for messing things up during desperate housewives i thought it could be skip waters "goofing" up... anyway it was just a joke. my gf and i thought skip waters is just goofy
yeah my gf's parents has the cox digital cable. i'm still trying to convince them to get the HD package
easternncnewswat 05-12-05, 01:25 AM Cool night for tropo... I picked up WECT and UNC 39.1-5 from Wilmington; had a blip for WWAY but never could lock it in. I also picked up WFXP, I think, from Fayettville on 62.1-4. I had blips on dt 34, 47, 51, and 59, which is WUNC in RDU; the others I have no clue where they were coming from since I couldn't lock them in.
jamieh1 05-12-05, 10:56 AM I had foxdt 24 trying to come in, but would not lock.
Eastern, 34 dt is PAX 35 Jacksonville, and dt 47 is CBS from Charleston SC. I had them really good last night, it is a JP station.
jamieh1 05-13-05, 01:37 PM WCTI is showing up on 48.1 48.2 as of 1pm, PSIP is working but station ID is not.
jamieh1 05-13-05, 02:06 PM Ken,
Do you think Directv will ever fix the UPN signal problem?
Its still bad and its been going on since Nov 2004.
They are trying they have even gotten their equipment manufacture out there but have not found a solution yet. As far as my PSIP data it should be back with proper mappings. I did a update today and subscribed to a data service and when I did it wiped out my tables and would not let me reenter them so I had to go back to the old version until they get me a fix
Ken
jamieh1 05-13-05, 02:37 PM thanks Ken
easternncnewswat 05-13-05, 07:58 PM Ken12,
Thanx for the data service... I read your comments earlier but didn't realize what you said. I'm watching Enterprise and all of a sudden hit the info button and find out what the episode is about! Awesome! Just awesome! Thanx to you and WCTI for giving us program information!
Looks great Ken! Keep up the good work! :)
Griff Thomasson 05-16-05, 04:11 AM Drudge web site is reporting a huge magnetic storm - , one of the strongest ever seen- how will that effect us ?
Maybe thats why the power was erratic at my house yesterday.
easternncnewswat 05-16-05, 08:06 AM I was able to watch the end of Survivor and the reunion show on WFMY 2 in Greensboro last night. Maybe the magnetic storm was why I was able to get a signal from that far away. I was also getting WUNC from Chapel Hill, WFXP from Fayetteville, and WRDC from RDU with a new indoor antenna that I've bought.
I hope it's the antenna- not the storm! *LOL*
jamieh1 05-16-05, 11:03 AM Yea, here in Washington I pulled in WXLV 45.1 45.2(ABC) from Winston Salem, CBS2 from Greensboro, and UNC from Chapel Hill, Pax From RRapids.
Liked CBS2 sub channel WX and news. love for 9 or 7 to go with a ch like that.
Easternncnewswat did you get any screen caps?
jamieh1 05-16-05, 11:04 AM NEVER MIND SHOULD OF CHECKED YOUR SITE FIRST!
Eastern, What type of antenna are you using now? Sounds like a good one for inside what ever it is!
Griff, have you had any luck at all with WFXl?
Griff Thomasson 05-16-05, 04:23 PM No luck with WXFI-I,ll try again tonight----- see what happens
{Is it me or does 9-2 look clearer?
easternncnewswat 05-16-05, 07:31 PM Originally posted by jamielee

jamielee,
Yes, I like the News 2 24/7 channel also... The only thing I would improve on is maybe adding a news update on the 2's at the top and/or bottom of the hour. Otherwise, I really liked it.
The new antenna is one I got from Wal Mart the other day. It's a Phillips indoor 50db amplified antenna. Instead of a loop for UHF, it's got a square shaped element. It's got regular VHF dipoles. The amplification is combined for V/UHF which kinda bugs me a bit. I'm experiencing a little bit of difficulty with WITN and WNCT- probably because of how close they are relative to signals from RDU, etc...
Anyways, so far so good... We'll see how it plays out over the next week or so and then I'll decide whether I want to keep it. It only cost me thirty bucks so I may just suck it up and keep it! *LOL*
You are right down the road from the beast in the east tower, LOL so I guess it is easy to overload on that 35kw powerhouse!
easternncnewswat 05-16-05, 07:40 PM 9.2 does look a little clearer, but it's quality seems to change daily to me...
I keep missing Viewer Vioce over at WNCT, have they been reading any?
Have you guys seen this site? I found it a long time ago and forgot to mention it when I joined in here... http://www.fybush.com/site-030724.html

I saw something about it last week when Allan Hoffman read the results of a poll from WNCT.com!?! How the heck did that tie in to Viewer's Voice? Your guess is as good as mine.
He did mention that their regular Viewer's Voice segment is on Friday's 6 p.m. newscast.
I'm usually at work until 7 so I'll probably never see it...

Cool site! Thanx for posting that jspENC!
Fridays I am never home, so I guess I wont see VV either... I completly forgot about that tower site until tonight. It has transmitters from all over the place!
jamieh1 05-18-05, 03:48 PM Does anyone no why UNC is not passing on PSIP info, its beens this way for about a week or 2
easternncnewswat 05-18-05, 04:48 PM I've noticed this also jamielee... It's like that across the platform also; WUNC and the other stations in the system. That's probably a given, but anyways...
I know they were talking about it over in the Raleigh thread about a week ago. I didn't really pay the conversation that much attention. Sorry...
The dopplet 7 beam is now working again. IT was broken over the last 2 days.
WNCT is not passing DD 5.1 during the majority of its HD broadcasts. I wonder why, because the speakers on my receiver stay active, but only sound is coming from the left and right front
jamieh1 05-20-05, 02:42 PM Just got a email from Wayne Estabrooks - Chief Engineer-Transmission for UNC TV and he's on vacation and was not aware of the problem but would talk to the folks at the station, funny thing he's in Washington on his sail boat and will be downtown tonight at Music in the streets and invited me to stop by his boat. Im working so will not be able to go but I remembered he told me he had property here in Washington.
I have a hard time picking up the UNC in Trenton. I have to watch their programs from the Delco site in Columbus County. I think channel 18 from South Carolina may be the problem.[B]
easternncnewswat 05-22-05, 10:04 PM It may be atmospheric jspENC. The past couple of nights I have almost locked in UNC from down that way. Almost, but not quite. I have managed to lock in UNC from Columbia the past few nights.
I always wondered what would happen with my receiver if I had two digitals that remapped to the same "channel." The other night I found out. I now have two sets of 2's; 2.1 WFMY, 2.2 WFMY WX and now 2.1-2.5 UNC from Columbia. Neato! *lol*
Griff Thomasson 05-23-05, 04:13 AM Guys I am glad this site is back up----- DH coverage of the Preakness - sound was way out of sink---- did you guys see the same -----???
DTV put thier second satilitte up over the weekend - now Spaceway one and Direct 8 sat. are up ----- couple weeks of testing and see what they come up with with hd programming------
Eastern I have two channel 12's. One is from Richmond and of course WCTI. I wish I had an antenna that was not so Directional, because it will only get what I aim it at, and I am not fond of turning the antenna all the time, also my Neighbors think I am nuts!
Ken12,
I like the new temperature icon you installed during GMA. Did you get a new box or are you painting it in manually? Either way it is easy to read with those bold digits! :)
OOOHHH MY GOD
WITN is using VIPIR radar!!!!!!!!! I thought they claimed it was no good!
easternncnewswat 05-24-05, 09:34 AM I'm pretty stunned myself! I thought WNCT had got an upgrade when I passed by it, then I realize there are 6 sweeps and it's WITN that I'm on! Wow! I totally was not expecting this today!!!
I have to say it, I like it better than WNCT's version. I don't know if it's the bandwith WITN is pumping to it or the map texture, but it blows WNCT away at the moment. Not to mention that WNCT is in Neighborhood Doppler 9 mode right now.
This is a leg up for WITN. With their Live Doppler 7 embedded into the Vipir system, they still have THE ONLY LIVE radar in Eastern NC. WNCT's, even though it used LIVE in it's marketing, etc, it was still 6 minutes behind Doppler 7.
The war is still on! *LOL*
easternncnewswat 05-24-05, 10:07 AM So, WITN just pulled Vipir Doppler Radar off 7.2 and we're back to Live Doppler 7... What's going on here? Are they testing out Vipir Doppler Radar before airing it? I have to say that the more I looked at it, the more it looked like the same map contours, etc as WRAL uses up in RDU. I wonder if maybe WITN is building out a full fledged weather channel and Vipir Doppler Radar will be a part of it? Questions, questions, questions and no answers forthcoming... I hate the waiting game! *LOL*
I can hear the wheels turning over at WNCT! I Have to say I like WITN's ViPir better too. I did not expect them to go with a ViPir after the way they bashed WNCT's
easternncnewswat 05-24-05, 11:26 AM They must have the upgraded version that I mentioned a few weeks ago. It does (did) look good to me too! I want to see more though!!! *LOL*
BTW, for anybody who didn't see WITN's VIPIR Doppler Radar, I've got a screencap on the front page of my website so you can check it out.
I've heard of a new system recently too that is supposed to directly compete with VIPIR... I wonder if any of the stations around here will go with that system. I forget it's name right at the moment.
The only thing that I'm disappointed about is WCTI getting left out of the competitive loop. At least where the weather sub-channel thing is concerned. With them not being able to do another channel due to ABC and UPN, they are getting left out of having dedicated weather available to viewers. That may be a good thing though. I've noticed lately that they are displaying Doppler 12000 at the top and bottom of the hours on ABC 12 and Skip or one of the other mets kick off the newscasts more often than not. That's a good thing since most viewers tune to locals for weather.
Then again, there is that old saying, how many weather channels do you need? It's true too, but I'm a weather junkie so I say the more the merrier! JMO.
GRIFF,
Tune to channel 250 on diretv and check out Fox Reality network. At least it is digital!
WITN must still be experimenting and learning ViPiR They did not use it tonight for the heavy weather. WWAY did the same thing when they first got their radar.
easternncnewswat 05-24-05, 07:48 PM I thought the same thing, jspENC. Or maybe they are waiting till the last night of the sweeps or the day/week after to debut it to keep the viewer hooked! Tonight would have been the perfect time to showcase it with the bad weather. After seeing it this morning, it got me to watch every one of their newscasts to see if they would use it. I'm just glad I was able to get a screencap of it for my website so that everyone here wouldn't think we were nuts since it's not there anymore. That's exactly what happened when I saw the new weather graphics package and thought WITN had debuted a dedicated weather channel on 7.2. Even the GM of WITN replied back to jamielee that he had no idea what we/I was talking about! *LOL*
I still want somebody in Eastern NC to give me a dedicated Wx channel. And then another can give me a dedicated News channel with weather as a bonus. *LOL*
Eastern,
Do you mean that the GM of WITN is denying that they have VIPIR or is denying that they were going to put together a WX station?
Griff Thomasson 05-24-05, 08:28 PM JSP - thanks i,ll check that out - I have an omidirectional antenna that I was able to pick up all the major local channels with - that you can have if you want - it,s in my garage collection dust--- let me know JSP---
I might take you up on that Griff, Does it work well with the digital signals? I am in a very difficult location it seems to keep a steady signal on PBS and the Wilmington channels. I don't think those type antennas work well for 60 mile ranges. Maybe an engineer can fill us in on that for sure?
What I might do since I just got things back up and perfect again after that Nor Easter is wait until I have to dis assemble it for a Hurricane (I HOPE NOT), and grab it from you then.
Did you ever pick up WXFI digital? I have not bothered to try again, but when they get things really going if ever I will need to make some adjustments I'm sure
easternncnewswat 05-24-05, 08:59 PM jspENC,
What I meant was right before WITN debuted their new weather graphics, I caught them testing them out on 7.2. When I saw them, I posted on here that they had a Wx channel up and running. By that afternoon it was gone. Jamielee then e-mailed WITN to ask what I had seen, but the GM said he didn't know what we/I was talking about. About a week later, the new graphics appeared.
About the antenna conversation you guys are having, I read an article about a new antenna that is supposed to be coming out that is supposed to be really kicking. I think it's an indoor that can be mounted outside as well. I read about it yesterday;
http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?chanID=sa006&articleID=000DB646-4C3D-1289-837D83414B7FFE9F
The 2nd page details the next generation receiver and this new antenna. I did some looking by typing in the company name and saw the specs on the antenna. It looks like something I'll eventually check out since I'm the indoor antenna enthusiast. Interesting reading though.
Interesting Easternncnewswat. I will keep that one in mind too. I think that multipath was my problem when I was using an indoor antenna. I could only get 2 channels and they were in and out.
On to WITN.... I guess they are going to be tight lipped about this radar until the time comes also? Well at least I will not be shocked when they air it on the news, and I do not want to miss what they have to say about it. Probably something along the lines of we are faster since we have 5 beams instead of 4... But I can honestly say that 9's Vipir is right on the money with accuracy when it is storming overhead. I don't know how WITN could do it faster, but we will see.
easternncnewswat 05-24-05, 09:24 PM I actually counted 6 sweeps today; Richmond & Wakefield, Va., Raleigh, Wilmington, Newport, and Live Doppler 7 in Washington. They are going to emphasize that their VIPIR can't be beat bundled with their own Doppler. Trust me, that's the advertising/marketing route they're going to take.
I'm surprised that Media General hasn't invested the money in building a superduperpooperscooperdoppler radar for WNCT. I think they're probably stunned that WITN has come out so aggressively with this weather "war."
WITN is making a lot of money right now even with the money they're giving away with 7 feet of cash. They'll handily win this book at sunrise, 6, and 11 against WNCT. Have you seen the new WNCT advertisement talking about watching news with substance or some such? WNCT is trying to take the high road with it, but WITN is making a serious play to become the #1 news station in Eastern NC. That was the reason WITN didn't do 7 feet of cash during the February book; they wanted to see if they could stand on their own merit. Didn't happen, so they brought it back. They are trying to hammer it into people's minds to watch WITN for all their news. And they'll do it after a while too especially if WNCT reacts, which is what they're counting on. They want WNCT to go to pieces right in front of Eastern NC's eyes.
jamieh1 05-25-05, 10:30 AM I saw Mike Weeks Sunday and Im asked him about a weather channel and he said they will soon have a 24/7 weather and news channel similar to the weather channel, he then said no one is supposed to know but Ill tell you.
No time frame given.
Thank you for giving us a glimmer of something to look forward to Jamielee. I just hope WNCT and WCTI do not sit idol and let WITN rule ENC with the digital spectrum. It is always good to have a choice of channels and attitude. But if WITN is the only one stepping up, then they will be the one I tune to.
Easternncnewswat, one important thing to remember about Doppler Radar is the NWS radars are the most powerful beams available. It can detect things the other live radar cannot. We the taxpayers keep those radars going, and I would rather see that image than a weaker radar that is leaving me in a whiteout so to speak. I am surprised that WNCT and WCTI have not pushed that more. It is really the truth too. What used to take 6 minutes with Neighborhood radar and Doppler 12 now only takes about a minute with systems such as VIPIR radars.
