GUESS WHAT!
WWAY BEAT everyone!!!! They have just activated a weather station that is local! They are running temperature maps satelite, doppler HIghs, Lows, and Neighborhood WX and the Meterologists come in too! THE FIRST IN ENC for local WX is WWAY! They paly some ROCKIN music too
easternncnewswat 05-25-05, 05:55 PM Wow! Great news from jamielee and jspENC! I guess I'll have to go to my folk's house next week and get some screencaps of WWAY's channel! I wonder if they'll keep it once ABC News Now comes back or if they'll put that on a tertiary channel? Can't wait to see WITN's channel... jspENC, I agree 100%, you can never have too much choice and attitude!
Eastern, don't rush too fast to see WWAY's weather, they took it down during the 5pm hour. I guess they are notg ready to run it 24/7 just yet. It looked outstanding to me, I wish they had let her run because the folks in Wilmington viewing area think I am bonkers.
easternncnewswat 05-25-05, 10:22 PM I feel your pain jspENC! I been there myself; just go back throughout the Greenville, NC thread and you'll know what I mean... *LOL*
Easternncnewswat, WWAY WX was seen on during the 11 AM hour today by one of the members of the Wilmington website. When I came in around 5 the channel was just radar again. But at least I am not thought to be making things up now!
Did you guys see channel 9's new WX system? If not check it out at 11. I won't spoil it for you unless you want me to!
easternncnewswat 05-26-05, 07:48 PM What? They got a new system? Are they still using VIPIR or is that why WITN is using it now? Tell me more in a private if you want... I want to know... I guess I'll be capturing tonight!
Eastern, they call it VIPIR NET 9 and use the same graphic. All I saw different was the logo at the top right of the radar. Not a big deal to me, but check it out and see what you think of it. Maybe I am missing something.
easternncnewswat 05-26-05, 08:09 PM Awww... I thought all the WX graphics were different! You got me, jspENC. Scratch maybe one of the things I said in my private to you. You got a PM.
Eastern I just filled out the survey, OK wNCT send me the money!
easternncnewswat 05-26-05, 09:50 PM Nah, I want it! *LOL*
Eastern did you get the last PM?
easternncnewswat 05-27-05, 12:02 AM Yep, just haven't had time to respond. Sorry about that!
Yep, just haven't had time to respond. Sorry about that!
Did my last email make it through OK?
easternncnewswat 05-27-05, 08:10 AM Yep foxeng! Sorry about the delay in the response; I was busy last night making some room for it.
Griff Thomasson 05-27-05, 07:53 PM Guys - some food for thought ----I listened to Rush Limbaugh (sp) he was talking about HD TV and how great it was --- but he thinks that we will be taxed again like they did for REA programs and for the net--- good to have him talking good about HD!!!!!!
If you guys are old enough to remember the REA programs
easternncnewswat 05-27-05, 08:29 PM Ok, I'll fess up... I'm not! What were the REA programs if you don't mind my asking?
jamieh1 05-27-05, 11:21 PM NEW 7.2 Weather channel coming 7/1/05, similar to the WEATHER CHANNEL info from Mike Weeks GEN MGR, He also said they are training on VIPIR, will launch soon.
Griff Thomasson 05-28-05, 05:46 AM Eastern---- The feds ------ many moons ago set up a tax on your power bill to pay for electrical lines run to very rural areas --- most of eastern NC had power lines paid for by that program- It was Called the Rural Electrification Adminstration --- short REA---- the same tax has been applied to your phone service and to your internet service--- check your bill for the fed. taxes listed----
Taxes were applied to internet service and to phone service to get internet in poor and rural areas - as with every Gov. program they never shut down ---
Many believe that there will be a tax placed on cable service and on Sat. service to pay for the digital change over now slated for 2009 ----
I wonder if Fox 8- could get ahold of some of that money to upgrade thier stuff -- how did PBS come up with the funds to upgrade ??
Hope that explained it ---
Griff
Griff Thomasson 05-28-05, 05:56 AM Local weather---- please guys put up a radar loop---- a static radar image is useless------ a one hour loop will tell me where a storm is headed and how fast it is moving --- that is usefull information--- a static radar image is like my weather rock-- :)
how did PBS come up with the funds to upgrade ??
Through the Corp for Public Broadcasting, a federally tax funded agency of the US Government.
easternncnewswat 05-28-05, 04:44 PM Thanx for the info, Griff! I should have known that, but didn't know what it was actually called, etc...
jamielee, awesome info! Thanx for the head's up. If it's like the weather channel, I suspect we're going to see the Accu-Weather version or something similar to WRAZ or WFMY's channels. Still terrific to know we'll see it soon. I had a feeling once I saw VIPIR on WITN 7.2 that the channel was close to debut!
Griff Thomasson 05-29-05, 11:13 AM Antenna question-----
I was able to pick up Fox 50-1 out of Ral;iegh this morning-- it would break up some - I had two antennas mounted on the same mast - and I took the VHF antenna down--- leaving up the UHF-- trying to get WRAZ- that helped a little with signal coming and going ----
Signal meter- will jump from 10---- 45- 77 ---- 45- 77--- all over the place---- what causes that??
On channels closer by --- say witn--- still get the signal meter floating around - good strong picture-- but meter readings are in the 45-88-10-45-69------
This is a highly directional antenna - XG91 -----UHF long range
Eastern I read and agree totally with your PM. I did not know that one guy was leaving ENC. But he is excellent and will get a job anywhere I am sure.
Griff this is a guess, but the wind and trees could be causing your problem.
Good to know another wx station will be on my TV soon. WWAY is still just running radar today,
Griff Thomasson 05-30-05, 05:42 PM Guys - update on my quest for a FOX HD channel---- yesterday morning I was able to pick up WRAZ fox 50-1 out of Raliegh--- signal would break up some - so I took down the VHF antenna I had mounted on the mast--( thought I was getting some interference from that ) last night during the 600--- I tried to pick it up several time and it would never lock in ---- I was disappointed as I at least wanted a taste of NASCAR in HD---( wild race )
Well this morning - I was able to lock in and recieve channel - not sure that I understand why I can get it in the morning and not at night when ducting is the best-----from my limited understanding----
Weather channels that stations are putting up is a very good thing -- and I think that will encourage people to go ahead and buy a digital TV---- my 2 cents worth
easternncnewswat 05-30-05, 07:55 PM I think if station's implement offshoot stations and market/advertise them like WRAL does with's it's Newschannel and Weather Center channel, they can be very successful and encourage consumers to purchase digital sets. However, with the channels I get from RDU, WRAL is the only station that advertises it's offshoot stations. I've yet to see any mention of NBC Weather PLUS on NBC 17 or ABC News Now, when it was on the air, or WTVD's pseudo news channel, on WTVD. You'd think they'd be publicizing the hell out of them to get people's attention. It's almost like most stations have to go digital but don't want viewers to know about it. I'm confused by the whole thing. *LOL*
I am all for radars, but please explain what the deal is... I have no idea what the difference is between WNCT's LIVE VIPIR rAdar and LIVE VIPIR NET 9!!!! I think NOTHING. They are all the same NWS radar sweeps that everyone else is using now. I want a radar that is local and that closes in to the street level during severe storms to notify me when to take cover.

Until Nielsen starts to rate digital channels, stations are not willing to lose the ratings since that is what they sell off of.
Like Ken12 said, IT is the analog signal that makes the money. Right now digital is still second place.
easternncnewswat 05-30-05, 09:27 PM I was just thinking out loud; believe me, I know it's all about revenue. The question is, will Nielsen ever start tracking HD? I mean, I'm sure they will once analog get's cut off, but that keeps getting delayed, over and over and over again...
There is no difference with Live VIPIR 9 and Live VIPIR Net 9... I mean, really, it's insulting to me when somebody tries to blow smoke up my a**! Yet another reason, local news is dying; it insults viewer's intelligence. Well, some viewers....
LMAO Easternncnewswat! I am insulted too. Is this what Viewers asked for in their Voice to the station? I doubt it.
I want Current temps with the hand tracking unit- and street level detail on the radar, good satellite images, and A. C. delivering ENC the weather report. The only female in the market. I hate watching men all the time, and that is what ENC is known for unfortunatlly.
easternncnewswat 05-30-05, 09:44 PM I'm sorry but Live VIPIR net 9 is such a joke to me... I took one look at it and laughed out loud. All they did was take a VIPIR logo and insert it over every major Radar in every state. How is this a forecasting advantage to Eastern NC? Sorry, WNCT but you blew it big time in my opinion!
I think it's pretty obvious that they are starting to run scared. Now that WITN is getting into VIPIR territority and they have their own Radar in the back yard of the WITN studio in Washington, they are going to have a clear advantage over WNCT. So, WNCT comes up with Live VIPIR Net 9! WTH? Gimmick, gimmick, gimmick...
I'm truly disappointed.
Neilson has to start checking HD programs soon, How do they expect to know how the transition is really going? Most of the shows I watch now revolve around HD content, and that is over directv now too.
easternncnewswat 05-30-05, 09:50 PM Maybe foxeng has some insight as to when that will happen. I'd love to have a people meter in my house even though I know DMA #105 is probably at the bottom of the list for this type of technology. I was stoked to hold a diary in February 2004! The culmination of checking the ratings in the Wednesday edition of USA Today all throughout high school and going to Zap2it.com, and Mediaweek daily for the past 5-8 years! *LOL*
Up until this point, 9 has been the weather leader in the area, at least since they first introduced us to Neighborhood radar, the first in ENC. Now they come up with this Network of the same junk they had years ago. I remember not long ago they had something called Storm Teams 9 Doppler net. Then that didn't last long, now they are back to it with Vipir! Thats crazy.
easternncnewswat 05-30-05, 09:59 PM I, myself, have always preferred WCTI's weathercast, which I think I've said ad nauseum. I usually read the NWS forecast discussion out of Newport and between that and Skip, I've learned how to read it since it's not always in layman's terms. The nice thing about WCTI's weathercast is that they really explain nearly every item in the forecast discussion. That's why their weather segment usually runs longer than WITN and WNCT's. I really couldn't get into WITN's until they got the new graphics package back in January/February; can't remember which, I'll have to check my webpage archives! *LOL* WNCT's weathercast is pretty much the same as it's always been with some new graphics here and there and this reliance on VIPIR, which is bordering on overkill now. And now, WITN is going to beat them to the punch with a local weather channel! It's a trip to watch the rating's crown get passed around!
I think I'll be watching J. H. waving his arms around the weather map real soon, if things don't improve. LOL!
easternncnewswat 05-30-05, 10:08 PM *LMAO* He is a funny dude! Very animated!!!

Don't give up Griff... Maybe you'll be able to lock it in eventually! I'll never understand the tropo thing ever. I look at that forecast webpage, but I don't really understand it. Like right now, it's showing Tuesday's tropo activity at 1200z; is that tonight at Midnight, tomorrow at 12 noon, or tomorrow night at Midnight, which is really Wednesday? It confuses the heck out of me!
Like right now, it's showing Tuesday's tropo activity at 1200z; is that tonight at Midnight, tomorrow at 12 noon, or tomorrow night at Midnight, which is really Wednesday? It confuses the heck out of me!
1200Z means noon at the Prime Meridian which is located at Greenwich England. (the Z is your indicator, L denotes local time and our time zone is denoted by R) Time is in 24 hour military time.
When we are on EST, you subtract 5 hours from Zulu time (Z time) and for EDT you subtract 4 hours. So on EDT 1200Z is 8AM EDT. For EST it would be 7AM.
See?
jamieh1 05-31-05, 08:33 AM In Mondays Washington Daily News on the front page it had a story about COX COMMUNICATIONS get info together for possible buyers of its NC systems. They said they expect to have it ready by the fall and a sell generally takes a year.
Said every since the companywent private that they have had money problems and are dumping the small systems and are eeping major markets. Also said Time Warner has most of NC wrapped up.
Ive seen TIME WARNERS digital service and they are way ahead of COX. Alot more digital channels and HD and on demand. I think that the Morehead Havelock and RDU areas have it around here, hopefully they take over.
If Warner takes over that will mean a hike in the price for sure. In Jacksonville the Minimum for Digital service is $62.00 and it goes right up to $100. and more for the Premium channels. Then an extra $9.00 for a digital box thing... Just Robery plain and simple, no wonder there are so many dishes in front yards in the area!

cpanther1 05-31-05, 03:26 PM Can someone that has an HDTV answer this?
Does a Wide Screen DVD movie fill up an HDTV in 720p or 1080i?
Thanks
Eastern,
Get your foil out and antennas greased... LOL WWAY WX is officially on as of today! They have also re-arranged the channels as ordered by the owner of the station. HD, WX, then SD. The WX station is a great addition to the digital line-up in ENC IMO.
The best you can do with a DVD player is 480 p it will fill the screen if it is a 16x9 aspect ratio but the other wide screen aspect ratios will have a black bar at the top and bottom
Ken
easternncnewswat 05-31-05, 04:53 PM jspENC,
I will be trying to get that tonight! Tropo is supposed to be decent tonight and I've been getting 60% signal on UPN28 out of RDU and UNC2 out of Columbia all day. I never get these channels that strong during the day. I'm going to hold my breath and cross my fingers that I can get a signal from WWAY tonight! I've picked it up once before briefly before I had my capture card and desktop hooked up and I got WECT a couple of weeks ago, so maybe luck will be on my side tonight! I'd love to see what it looks like!!! I saw in the ilmhd thread that the engineer for WWAY posted a big smile on the thread you started!
I don't know if you'll get them tonight, I cannot get the normal stations I get when a good ducting night is upon us. Oh well...
cpanther1 06-01-05, 05:41 AM I just looked at the WWAY weather channel.
That has everyone I have seen so far, in the back seat.
easternncnewswat 06-01-05, 07:54 AM I just looked at the WWAY weather channel.

Gosh, I wish I could lock onto WWAY. Ducting is real good this morning! I'm getting Greensboro and Norfolk with my indoor antenna, but I can't get a lock on Wilmington! Next week when I head to folk's house in New Bern, I'm definitely takin my stb with me so I can take a look at WWAY!
Eastern if this works this is the area that is covered easily by the WWAY signal, but you still can get it outside of this area, but it will be difficult in the daytime probably.
http://www.fcc.gov/ftp/Bureaus/MB/Databases/fm_tv_service_areas/maps/DT693423.gif
easternncnewswat 06-01-05, 01:15 PM Thanx jspENC! I should definitely be able to get it in New Bern as my folks already get the Wilmington stations with their outdoor antenna. Here in Greenville, it's going to be a little luck and a lot of ducting to get WWAY. This morning I was getting my regular WFMY from Greensboro, WFXP from Fayettville, WUNC from Chapel Hill, WVEC from Norfolk, and had some blips from WTKR and WAVY, but couldn't lock them in. I also had a blip coming from a dt 46; isn't that WWAY's frequency? Or is that something from the Triad also? I can't remember.
Looking at the tropo forecast for tonight, we are in the fair to marginal area by tomorrow morning. Then it goes fair/marginal to moderate and good by sunday night to monday morning. Maybe I'll get lucky! *LOL*
46 is WWAY digital. I do not know where the closest 46 would be to this area beside channel 3's.
easternncnewswat 06-01-05, 04:28 PM I went to WWAY's home page so I've at least seen a pic of what 24/7 Weather looks like. Very nice looking! Hope to see it in action sometime soon!
Anybody, who hasn't seen it yet can click over to my page; there is a link to the full story about WWAY 24/7 on their website.
Trip in VA 06-02-05, 06:54 AM 46- WWAY-DT Wilmington or WPXV-DT Norfolk.
- Trip
Easternncnewswat,
I saw the triad stations on your site. I wish we had a Fox station like that. FOXeng, wont you open a station for us? LOL!
easternncnewswat 06-02-05, 06:47 PM I agree completely, jspENC! Fox 8 up in the Triad looks like the bomb- and I mean that in a good way!!! Very slick looking production and I love the weather graphics with that spinning low pressure and high pressure on the map. That's pretty awesome looking. I don't recall having seen that weather graphics package before. I wish Newscorp owned our local Fox stations.
It's been awesome since I got this new indoor antenna; I've been able to get WFMY reliably 2 or 3 times a week. I'm getting the chance to see everyone's version of local weather channels which to me is just awesome! So far I've seen WRAL Weather Center channel, WAVY Weather Station (Norfolk), WFMY 24/7, NBC17 Weather Plus, WXII 12 Weather Plus (via contribution), NBC Weather Plus on WECT, and WWAY 24/7 (via WWAY.com). I've also seen weather radars on WTKR & WVEC (Norfolk), WITN, WNCT, and WTVD.
For Eastern NC, I can see WITN going with something like WWAY 24/7 if they're not going with NBC Weather Plus. I can see WNCT going with something Accu-Weatherish like WRAL Weather Center channel unless they do a news channel instead. If compression tech ever gets there, I could see WCTI doing something like WFMY 24/7 which looks to me like it takes very little bandwith! I think it's pretty obvious that all stations are going to be doing at least a weather sub-channel with their bandwith the way they are sprouting up all over.
The only fly in the ointment is network startups like NBC Weather Plus and ABC News Now. I'm not sure what CBS and Fox could roll out digitally unless it was entertainment or financially oriented. I could CBS doing an infotainment digital network since they are owned by Viacom which has it's hands in everything. Same with Fox for that matter.
Ken12,
Did you change some PSIP setting over the last day or so? I now see in the banner of my Motorola STB that the labels for WCTI look squeezed like this... WCTIHD - UPN48
Before it was this... WCTI HD ------- upn 48
Also I have heard nice comments around the area from the Doppler 12 being shown at the top and bottom of some of the programs.
easternncnewswat 06-02-05, 07:28 PM I noticed that thing about the lableing on WCTI last night. I thought maybe I was imagining it; I guess I should have checked the screencaps on my webpage! *LOL*
Has anybody here been to dxfm.com? I've been looking at it for a few nights and these dudes are dxing signals from like a thousand miles away! I think that's just amazing.... I mean, I'm pretty stoked if I can pick up the Triad, Norfolk, or Wilmington. I can't imagine getting something from Florida or Chicago... Wow!
The American Idol caps are 16:9 since we transmit the FOX network through the splicer. That is why there is no grey bars and the image has more room on the sides than a 4:3. AI is the only network programming that carries the SD white FOX bug. All other network programming carries the local station bug in the same position as what you see the white FOX bug.
I need to get you guys some caps of our 4 hour morning news, 30 min noon news and our hour and a half 5pm news. We do 7 hours of news per day! It is interesting to note that all 3 widescreen monitors in the caps are all HD. The two in the walls are 65 in RPs and the 4:3 is acutally a 16:9 50 in LCD in 4:3 mode. We had a old 4:3 RP and it died a couple of weeks ago so we had to put something there so we juse put the LCD back there and put in 4:3 mode and it works! We also have a 42 in plasma HD that moves up and down like Leno's that sits behind the main desk, but I didn't get any caps of it when it was up. There are 30 some monitors of all sizes and types visable on that set. It is awesome to say the least.
Not everyone is happy with our digital signal. It is low power, 4.2 kw but the antenna is 900 ft above the ground. We get about 35 miles with it. It covers all of High Point, Greensboro and 80% of WInston-Salem. It doesn't quite make it to Burlington. We are in the process of building our full power facility, new tower, building, transmitters right now. That is taking all of my time.
You guys buy a station down there and I come build it! My wife would LOVE it! I am originally from Kinston so I know that area REAL well!
easternncnewswat 06-02-05, 07:47 PM Hmm... I wonder how much tv stations go for these days? *LOL*
As far as the weather system. we just put that in. It is brand new. Been in a month. It is by Weather Central and does the "point and draw" where the on screen talent pushes a button in one hand and they can take their finger and can either draw on the key wall like a telestrator or can cause preproduced graphics to appear or disappear and make Lows and Highs spin and such. Eye candy. It is the latest and greatest. WFMY has one like it by some other vendor.
Oh, we only have one 720p channel. We do not do any multicasting. (yet)
easternncnewswat 06-02-05, 07:56 PM Is that weather package exclusive to Fox O&O's? I don't remember seeing it on Fox NY or Fox LA on satellite. I lost those over a year ago, but don't remember it. I never watched much of Fox NY's 10:00 news, but would stick around for the Fox LA broadcast.
foxeng, get on the line with Rupert and tell him that there are two stations in Eastern NC begging for a takeover! *LOL*

No it isn't. There are a lot of things FOX does as a group, but weather packages are not one of them.
foxeng, get on the line with Rupert and tell him that there are two stations in Eastern NC begging for a takeover! *LOL*
FOX is at the ownership limit now! He would have to sell us to buy 8 and 14! Last time I checked our news department is about 75 people strong.
easternncnewswat 06-02-05, 08:08 PM *LOL* Didn't realize the ownership cap had been met!
What about ABC 45 and UPN in the Triad? Are they hard to pick up for residents? Do either do the Newscentral newscasts? I remember ABC 45 used to have a newscast but dropped it. Is that still the case? Both are owned by Sinclair, right?
I remember when Superbowl was coming around that Sinclair was negotiating with cable systems for cash compensation and/or multicasting space. A lot of people were under the impression that Sinclair would be rolling out a Newscentral digital network eventually. I could see them hoping to catch the wave that Fox is currently riding to great success! *LOL*
Foxeng,
As soon as I build a multi million dollar corp... I will call on you! LOL!!
Griff Thomasson 06-03-05, 05:21 AM Guys I checked out WWAY,s weather last night ---- we were impressed- a lot of weather info in just a few min . - even had a tropical segment -------very well done IMHO-----
*LOL* Didn't realize the ownership cap had been met!

Sinclair's WXLV-DT and WUPN-DT are not difficult to pick up. Both operate off of the same tower just north of my tower (WXLV-TV operates off of Sauratown Mt where WXII-TV/DT are located). WXLV-DT just went HD last fall and WUPN-DT went HD first of the year. WUPN-DT is full power and WXLV is operating with a STA, but it is for 750 kw and their CP is for 990 Kw.
WUPN does the 10pm News Central and WXLV does the 11pm 30 minute News Central. I don't know about other markets, but neither one does well in the ratings here. WUPN has always done about a 1 share and WXLV does about a 1.5 share. WUPN's only 10pm competion is our one hour 10pm news and we average about a 7 to 8 share every night, sometimes beating the ABC, CBS, NBC primetime shows. The CBS and NBC affiliate also do about 7 to 8 share for their 11pm newses. Neither the the 10pm nor 11pm News Centrals have put a dent in the news ratings here. It is interesting that the local News Central bug and ticker is not shown on the DT's, just on the analogs so what you see is just the direct local feeds and the Baltimore "national" feed minus the ticker and the bugs. You see the supers come and go but the finishing graphics you don't see. I don't know why.
I reinstalled my PSIP generator with a new version a couple of days ago and probably when I typed the name in this time I left out the space. I'll fix it the next time I take the system down. We are now using a data service with our PSIP so you should see more program descriptions now.
Ken
More descriptions is good. No big deal about the logo, it just made me look twice when I saw your logo and WWAY's squeezed together for the first time on the same day at the same time.
The guy at TV 3 changed his channels around and squeezed his calls and HD WX and DT together.
easternncnewswat 06-03-05, 04:29 PM It must be a quirk of my stb, but I can never see the descriptions for ABC12 until I first tune to UPN48 and look at the guide for it. Once I switch back to ABC12, I can usually see program descriptions. Weird thing, but I think from my discussions over the year on here, everybody knows my stb is a little wacky! *LOL*
easternncnewswat 06-03-05, 04:31 PM Ken12, Will you eventually provide the anchor names for WCTI 12 News broadcasts? The other morning I was watching WFMY's morning show out of Greensboro and that was the first time I had ever seen anchors names listed in the program description. On most channels, I always see local news, sports, and weather. I'm surprised more stations don't promote their talent even in this subtle way on on digital program guides. Maybe it could be (insert anchor's names) provide local news, sports, and weather or local news, sports and weather with (insert anchor's names).
WE could of done that when we were programing it manually but with the Data Service it will have to come from them. I'll talk to our Programing Director and see if it is possible for her to send that kind of info when she updates them.
Ken
easternncnewswat 06-03-05, 04:42 PM I know anchor teams can sometimes change based on illness, etc. but I really think people tune in for people they are familiar with. Like I said, might be a good way to promote your anchor teams. They've been in place for a while; it seems nowadays that is becoming a rarity more than the norm.
easternncnewswat 06-03-05, 04:46 PM Ken12, one last thing and I'll stop bugging you... *LOL* I think I discovered last night that PBS 19 is on WCTI's tower in Trenton. Is that true? Is their signal more directional to the South or is it their output that is so much lower? I've never received their signal here in Greenville, but the FCC maps show that their signal extends just North of Greenville.
I think you are right eastern, I think that 19 is on WCTi tower. I am getting them a lot better now than I used to, I think a bird straitened a reflector element on my antenna or something LOL...
WUNM field plot is strange...
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/imgsetup/40237.gif
easternncnewswat 06-03-05, 08:27 PM *LOL* I wouldn't doubt it if a bird did do that! Weirder things have happened!
I am getting WUNM at 18 db , whatever that means... Can someone explain it for me? I get WCTI WPXU WNCT AND WITN at 25 db that is the highest I have seen on this box.
easternncnewswat 06-03-05, 08:42 PM At least your stb tells you something. As you've seen from my screencaps, I just get bars of strength and I interpret that as 10%, 20%, and so on.
jspENC, have you read the article about CBS planning to multicast a promo channel to their affiliates? The link to the article is on my website along with RDU ratings if you're interested. I'm not sure what I think of a promo channel. I was just saying last night that I thought they would come up with some kind of an info-tainment channel but I'm not sure I want to be subjected to endless commercials for CBS/Viacom shows. If they are documentaries, making of's, behind the scenes, deleted scenes, etc. that might be at least interesting. Key words there are might be. Anyway, interesting news today. It's stirred up a hornet's nest on the programming thread.
I wouldn't mind checking out the Tube but we would need some independent stations or a WB affiliate on the air to see that probably. I don't think there's enough bandwith on our 3 stations for that. I say 3 cause, well you know how Fox is... *LOL*
I'll check it out eastern and tell what I thinkk
The channel is a start I guess, but I expected a CBS news channel. I think they should go with that before they do re-runs of shows.
easternncnewswat 06-03-05, 09:44 PM It's an odd concept and I think there must be more to it than what was discussed or released today. I'm not sure they can build a whole network, even a digital one, with leftovers.
easternncnewswat 06-04-05, 06:35 PM I, myself, have always preferred WCTI's weathercast, which I think I've said ad nauseum.
Ok, I know I'm quoting myself here, but during Saturday night's 12 News at 6, a segment about e-mail addiction wrapped and Eric Mittenthal (sp?) went to commercial with, "And for all you weather addicts out there, we'll be right back," or something to that effect... How'd he know I was going to be watching? Has he been reading this board? It was like he looked right through my tv at me; I was *rotflmao*!
I am not getting PSIP on WNCT and WITN just says DTV program...
Do you all think WITN will use Vipir starting this week?
In the daily newspaper here in Jacksonville today there was some good bio's on the chief meteorologists at 7,9, and 12
No picture on WCTI HD at 8:35 pm Sunday
easternncnewswat 06-05-05, 09:36 PM I am not getting PSIP on WNCT and WITN just says DTV program...
Me either; with WITN I was hoping the new channel would be coming online, but then I remembered jamielee saying not until July 1st. Unless they're planning a sneak attack! *LOL*
Then I saw that WNCT didn't have any PSIP and I thought, hmm... maybe they're planning a sneak attack. But I doubt it; I don't think anyone is in much of a hurry.
I think it's just technical difficulties with the equipment being used. Across the board, PSIP seems to be a problem. WRAZ just got theirs back up and running in the past few days, so it's not just isolated to Eastern NC.
I hope VIPIR starts this week; I'm crossing my fingers, but I'm thinking not until a channel launch takes place. We shall see...
PBS is on my tower it is a little higher than my 48 ant. In all my testing they usually came in stronger than my 48 although I don't think I looked at them up in Greenville.
I think I have my PSIP generator working pretty good right now. In my case the PSIP generator is just a software program that runs on a standard computer. I was able to install it on 2 different computers so if I have a failure it will be pretty easy to enable the second computer. So I should be down a few minutes once I know about it.
Ken
Ken,
If you missed it earlier I can get the SNR rate and db reading on my Motorola STB, and your 48 comes in at 25 db which is as strong as anything I get, while PBS 18 comes in at 18 and 19 db. Almost undecodable isn't it? When I get WECT 44 at 15db it starts to break-up.
I think it is because I am using a YAGI and not a Bowtie with a screen.
I have been doing some antenna homework, lol and I found a site that says if your channels are mainly above 40 a YAGI is a good choice, but if they fall below 40 you should get a bowtie type with a screen, and that checks out with the type of reception I get.
easternncnewswat 06-08-05, 09:21 PM I'm trying to limit my time on this board... I think I dreamt of WITN's new VIPIR radar last night! Seriously, I'm way to anxious to see it in action...
So, I sent in a couple of weatherpics to tv12 today to see if I could win an umbrella. I must be a lousy photographer; mine didn't get picked to go on air... :(
I'm still crossing my fingers for 10 or 11 o'clock. Maybe I'll get lucky! :)
I am no photographer either... :(
I saw WRAL Vipir last night in HD... Lately they have been coming in at night.
easternncnewswat 06-08-05, 10:12 PM I got a Fox 35 last night from Richmond, I think. I also got another PBS on dt 39 and remapped to 34, I believe. The other night I picked up Pax 49 from Norfolk and WHRO PBS on 16 remapped to 15. I've been getting really good ducting the past few days. It looks like it's supposed to get better too as the week goes along.
jamieh1 06-09-05, 09:09 AM I pulled in Channels WUPN48, WFMY2, WXLV45 GREENSBORO, Ch 58 UNC from CONCORD, UNC4 CHAPEL HILL, PAX62 (DO NOT KNOW WHERE FROM), WTVR RICHMOND VA, PAX 47 Roanoke Rapids, The usual 5, 11, 17, 22, 42 from Raliegh.
The longest range I ever got was
WTOC from SAVANNAH GA, WIS10 from Columbia SC, WPDE Mrytle Beach SC, WWAY, WECT from Willmington NC these were all digital.
easternncnewswat 06-09-05, 09:35 AM Pax 62 is Fayettville if I remember correctly.
Is anybody having any trouble with my channel 48 remapping to 12
Ken
easternncnewswat 06-09-05, 11:45 AM It's mapping fine on my screwy stb, Ken12... No problems here!
No problem in Jacksonville either Ken, I watched Street Smarts this morning on UPN, one of my favorite shows on that channel,
Ken do you take programming request? LOL!
What I would like to see on WCTI 12 or 48 is the Ellen DeGenerous show, I cannot get her in this market or Wilmington... She can really dance! It is the only talk show that isn't boring I think...
Thanks
I'm not having any problems with my boxes either But I had a viewer that I was talking to That has a set top box from Dish and he says it is on 48 on his box. I'm not familiar with any of the dish equipment but I do know some of the boxes from Sat companys do not use PSIP for mapping.
Ken
I'll mention to our program director about that show
Ken
Just spoke to our program director She said that Ellen DeGenerous show will be on WCTI in the fall. Not sure of the exact date yet when I find out I'll let you know
Ken
easternncnewswat 06-09-05, 01:08 PM Alright! That's awesome about Ellen coming to WCTI! Her show is hillarious!
Thanks a bunch Ken! WCTI is the one to watch! And the FIRST ONE 2 WARN YOU! :D
Feel free to use those... LOL!
Ken,
There is a guy in Wilmington using one of those DISH boxes and he says it is a piece of junk, he has the same issues as the guy you were talking with. But at least they can receive dtv is a positve side I guess. My Motorola only gives the names of the shows, and no program descriptions. It is a 2003 model I think.
I have 2 Directv boxes at home one is the HD tivo and the other is a Samsung neither use my guide data they get that from Directv but the HD Tivo uses my channel mappings but the Samsung does some remapping even when I don't send it out. The RCA DTC 100 does use my guide data and channel mapping. It would be nice if they all worked the same.
Ken
How has the ducting been lately for you viewers out there? I have gotten nothing but my usual locals. The forcast has been strong and I do not know if something is wrong with my amp or what.
easternncnewswat 06-14-05, 08:16 PM Same here for me jspENC. I've been thinking my antenna had lost it's magic touch since the forecast(s) have been so strong. I've gotten nothing out of the ordinary for days and days. All I've gotten are locals too.
Tonight I'm getting some blips on UNC 4 out of Chapel Hill but haven't locked it in yet. Nothing from Greensboro, Fayettville, or Norfolk for a good week now.
Makes for boring HD when you cant pull in something a couple hundred miles away;;)
I have not seen WECT 6.1 in a couple of weeks now...
easternncnewswat 06-14-05, 09:40 PM You got that right!
If it's like this now, what're we going to talk about once the dtv transition is complete? *LOL* Luckily, we probably have another 10 or 20 years till that happens... j/k!
Luckily, we probably have another 10 or 20 years till that happens... j/k!
How much money are you willing to lose on a bet? ;)
easternncnewswat 06-15-05, 08:32 AM How much money are you willing to lose on a bet? ;)
Very little! *LOL*
KEN12 or FOXeng,
Can you break this down for me--- LOL!! I do not completely understand...

I can, but I would rather Ken do it since it is his station.
OK Foxeng, I will wait on Ken. I also have another question for Ken12, Do you plan to raise your transmitter to the top of the tower once analog is taken down? A lot of people up to the north will lose WCTI I beleive if you leave it the way it is. Channel 12 analog goes a long ways into the Raleigh Market too, which is neat for those viewers. I have family out that way that thinks Skip is the greatest!
Man it's HOT today!! 95*
easternncnewswat 06-17-05, 06:40 PM Did anyone see WITN show off it's Advanced VIPIR tonight on the 6:00 broadcast? Apparently, they're calling the system, duh, Advanced VIPIR touting it's advantage with Live Doppler 7 built in. It also zooms down to stree level, which Jami Arnold showed off. It also has a VIPIRcast built in (smiliar to WRAL WeatherScope or WCTI's Precisioncast). Neat system! Can't wait to see more of it!
7.2 is still Live Doppler 7 as of right now.
easternncnewswat 06-17-05, 08:44 PM Pics of WITN's Advanced VIPIR system are on my webpage if you missed it!
I missed it!
The Radar Wars are officially on again! Now what are the other guys going to do about it?! LMAO!!!! WITN is in the lead for now.
This slogan by WITN sounds just like WWAY-3's. At 3 they also say, "FORGET EVRYTHING YOU HAVE HEARD ABOUT DOPPLER, NOW THERE IS A LIVE DOPPLER NETWORK IN SE NORTH CAROLINA" Live digital dopplers including live super doppler 3 all working together. But WITN's has a lot more features to sport than any other stations in Eastern NC with all the forecast models. But when WNCT first brought VIPIR in during Floyd I think it was, they had forcast models on that unit, but the one they have now does not, they still use the futurecast model though from time to time.
easternncnewswat 06-18-05, 05:18 PM I have a feeling WNCT still has a few tricks up it's collective sleeve. Time will tell...
I really liked the Advanced VIPIR, but not really sure that the forecast model is my cup of tea. It's not as bold as I expected. The colors are very muted. This is something that may change over time though. I'm very excited about seeing WITN's 24/7 weather channel when it comes online. I wonder if that will incorporate Advanced VIPIR? I'd be surprised if it didn't though...
I bet Skip and WCTI will be hitting hard real soon. They are going to have to do something to keep up with all these radars. I bet when they do, what they use will be better than anything we have seen to this point.
I know there is something in use beside VIPIR, (i forget the name) and I have a feeling that will blow the others away.
easternncnewswat 06-18-05, 06:49 PM There is another product that competes directly with VIPIR. I forget it's name also... I want to say it's Titan or Trident or something, but I know that's not right. I read about it a few months ago on weather message board. I don't think WNCT will dump VIPIR for it. I can see WCTI picking it up possibly. I foresee WNCT maybe doing an overhaul on their graphics to something more impressive though. I guess we'll see eventually...
Griff Thomasson 06-19-05, 09:24 AM Hi guys --- I,ve been working long hours the last several weeks - whew - I have been wondering the same thing about ducting- high pressure setting in over us --- I was able to pick up WRAZ-- out of Raliegh for a few min last Sunday---
I see a bill has been intruduced in congress to cut off analog Dec31 2008--- and a requirement for all TVs to have digital tuners---
Griff Thomasson 06-19-05, 11:23 AM NEWS______ I just picked up WFXI- Fox out of Morehead digital!~!!!!!!!!!! they must have it up and running ----
NOw if they will get thier HD up and running - LOL
JSP I have my antenna pointed at 67 degs to get it ---- yoo hoo---
Hello and Welcome back to the board Griff! I am going out first thing tomorrow and try for WFXI. I have been trying off and on with no luck since the first time I had a glimmer of a signal. I am still concerned about 3 big trees being right in my way of the area. I might just get a compass to help me with the exact location. If it works then I am going to have to re-arrange antennas or get a rotator...
What that is saying is there is some interference from another station that is effecting chan 12 if I go back to it for my digital. It is a station in Virginia. We will have to make a decision to either live with the interference minimize it or we could stay on 48 If we stay on 48 that would mean that WRAL would have to find another channel.
What ever channel we pick it will be mounted at the top of our 2000' tower
I appreciate the reply Ken, either way noone down south will be effected, but the northern viewers will be struggling probably. I say let WRAL use another channel, LOL! They do not need to use 48. I think anything over 50 is a good choice anyway, since most antennas are Yagi now.
I would not think the interference would be acceptable, because many mornings when I turn to WCTI analog I see that the Roanoke channel 12 is causing some instability in the picture. Also on my digital box I get dt 54 which reverts back to 12-1HD, 12-2 SD, and 12-3 a radar from roanoke. Seems the use of 12 by both stations would really be a mess, IMHO
WFXI analog is run off the air practically too from channel 8 up there.
easternncnewswat 06-20-05, 11:05 AM jspENC, I see Griff was able to pick up WFXI... Have you had any luck yet?
I tried WFXI earlier and could not lock it. I am not sure how Griff can get it at 67 degrees, cause the tower on the FCC map looks more like 95 degrees or so... LOL! Griff, are you sure it's 67? I will try again tonight.
Griff where do you live?
Ken
easternncnewswat 06-20-05, 11:21 AM I even took a shot last week at getting WFXI from New Bern when I was at my folk's house. I didn't expect to pick it up and didn't. My folks live on the Craven/Jones county line almost so I didn't expect to pick up WFXI. I didn't have luck picking up anything down there except for WCTI, WNCT, WITN, and UNC.
I'm actually going down there again sometime soon to help my Dad remount their outdoor antenna and rerun a new coax. The one they have now has the same coax, cables, etc since we first moved there in 1983. Needless to say, it's seen many hurricanes, etc. I think once we remount it, they will probably get better signals than they do now.
Once my folks saw the digital picture, they were very excited and my Mom wanted to buy my stb the same day! *LOL*
OK from Griffs location near Swansboro he needs to aim at about 67. I need to aim more like I said before, 95 degrees or so,. and I have 3 BIG trees right in the way in my yard and the neighbors yard in back... That is how I aimed the first time I got a flash a month or so ago.
Eastern,
Do your folks get WYDO or WFXI analog? Curious, because I spoke with a lady a few weeks ago that lives south of Beulaville in Duplin County and she tells me that she gets WYDO almost perfectly. She said also she gets 8 off and on depending on conditions. She also gets 3,5,6,7,9,11,12,19,WB 22, 26,28,35,38,39,40,and 50! All analog of course, but with all those I think I would be happy!
easternncnewswat 06-20-05, 11:52 AM They get 14 better than 8 but both are snowy. 8 is so snowy there is no audio. Of course the antenna is pointed the opposite way toward the West so they can pick up RDU and Wilmington as well as locals.
My 8/14 is not watchable from here, 14 is black and white it is so bad! 8 is nothing. I bet once you run a new line that will make a big difference. I would get the thickest line you can, like RG-6 or even RG-11
easternncnewswat 06-20-05, 12:42 PM That's exactly what I plan to do. When the antenna was first installed, it picked up RDU and Wilmington as well as the locals great. As time has gone by, it's gotten much worse. I really think the line needs to be rerun and the whole thing needs to be remounted as the straps are loose due to growing ivy, etc.
Mr. Bertie,
If you are reading out there can you fix your audio? I can only hear Dr Phil out of the Left Front Speaker. Normally it is Left and Right Front only. I would love to hear the Surround sound if you have it. :D
Griff Thomasson 06-20-05, 06:51 PM Ken I live in the Bear Creek area - in Hubert-- 2.5 miles from the back gate - or across from Marker 55 on the ICW 3 blocks up--one block over from Tara boat works .
JSP you may have a problem picking them up as they are at low power ---- finally the big yagi is paying off for me -
Griff Thomasson 06-20-05, 09:21 PM If you are using a magnetic compass don,t forget to subtract 9 deg from true heading --- that is the standard deviation for this area---- example if antenna web gives you a heading of say 76 degrees - subtract the 9 deg and you get 67 deg mag.---- that checks out with my signal meter --- get the strongest signal when I do that with this Yagi------
easternncnewswat 06-20-05, 09:39 PM griff, i know you are stoked to have fox on the air even if not hd!
Thanks Griff,
I am going to get a compass, lol! Now I know to aim more to the left!
I heard yesterday on a local radio show that PAX is going to change names in the next few months, anyone know anything specific? The people from 35/38 were on the show and I was still half asleep and did not hear a definite name.
easternncnewswat 06-21-05, 12:15 PM Probably some kind of weird joke. I haven't read anything about this in any trade publications. They were yanking listener's chains probably.
I may be totally off base here, but I have been thinking about this...
I searched the internet and found nothing about PAX as a whole ending. But on that radio station they had an actress that is going to be playing in a new series on 35/38 starting August 21 that is filmed in Charleston SC
I am just guessing, but I think they are going to change over to WB! This actress played on a former show on WB and they were discussing that as well. The show was One Tree Hill I think... But I never heard the Pax employees, the radio Hosts or the actress say what the network was going to be called, that is why I believe they are going to change over. That would be awesome if I am right.
easternncnewswat 06-21-05, 08:04 PM That would be cool if we had an ota WB in Eastern NC! I guess time will tell...
We will know by the fall season what exactly this change will be, just have to wait it out... LOL
Griff Thomasson 06-21-05, 08:59 PM Guys I was wrong about the headings from antennaweb.org- the standard deviation are built into the computer program that gives out the headings - had an e-mail chat to check today------ SO I STAND CORRECTED----
My mounting of true north with the rotor must be off a few deg,s , thats why my thinking checked out here with the signal meter--- sorry--
Griff
easternncnewswat 06-21-05, 09:01 PM jspENC, WNCT said twice during the 6:00 news where to get hurricane tracking charts. Did you see?
I saw that Eastern, I wonder..... LOL!!!!
Griff, I could not get a signal in either position I aimed at, My WEAK SIGNAL light kept flashing, so I know the signal is close. If no signal is on it will burn constantly.
jamieh1 06-22-05, 10:16 AM off subject, but did anyone with a directv D10 box get the new software update. It activated the ACTIVE application and overhauled the reciever and changed the loks of it alot.
Now you can get weather and weather maps, lottery, horoscopes, best bets. Its pretty neat. Not bad for a $49 box.
I use a Phillips box, so I guess I don't get that stuff. The D10 sounds good though. Where did you get your box Jamielee?
jamieh1 06-22-05, 03:14 PM best buy, circuit city has them as well.
I saw tonight where ITN won every newscast they paid people to watch. They had an ad during Wheel thanking ENC for making them the most watched news in the area from almost every on-air individual. We shall see who wins the next go around... LOL
easternncnewswat 06-22-05, 10:20 PM If they run 7 Feet of Cash, it will be them... I wouldn't expect it again until maybe the November sweeps. It's highly unlikely that they'll do it for the sweeps during the summer, July I think. That's the one sweeps period that is pretty much universally ignored by everyone.
That's the one sweeps period that is pretty much universally ignored by everyone.
Well.............. summer book isn't exactly ignored (close to it though), but the results are so unreliable because viewing habits are all messed up because people are doing things away from the TV in summer.
Has WNCT ended `Viewer Voice'? I do not recall then bringing it up lately....
jamieh1 06-23-05, 01:03 PM Ducting is forcasted to be Strong Friday and very strong Saturday.
easternncnewswat 06-23-05, 06:26 PM Viewer's Voice is still going on; I saw Marti mention it the other night on the news. I think they only do it on Friday nights though. Not sure.
jamieh1 06-24-05, 09:06 AM KEN- major interference from 48.1 48.2 WUPN Greensboro
picking up distant channels last night, 2 from Greensboro, 12.1 12.2 12.3 from Virginia, 13.1 13.2 from Virginia (Richmond) also 48.1 48.2 UPN Greensboro 48 completely knocked WCTI off my box could not get it for nothing. Had to wait till this morning.
Had to watch NBA on 11.
Ken major interference from 48 Greensboro
Griff Thomasson 06-24-05, 09:14 AM Talked with eng. at WFXI this morning--- they are still tweaking on thier equipment--- I could not get them Wensday night - they had a problem with electrical feed -- that night ----- have WFXI nice and clear this morning ---- sound levels were down about 20 DB and they are adjusting that----
With ducting JSP you should be able to get them -----
Good news is they are up and running with a digital signal---- bad news is it,s going to be a year or more for the HD signal------ and I do understand why----
Unfortunately that is what happens when ducting is high. Depending on the direction your antenna is pointing you will pick up new stations but could lose or receive interference to the local channels. It was even affecting my microwave hop fro New Bern to Trenton.
Ken

FYI, WUPN DT, Greensboro is on channel 33 and their analog is on 48.
Also, WFMY-DT (2-1, 2-2) channel 51 went to full power (1 million watts) yesterday.
jamieh1 06-24-05, 09:26 AM Im now recieving WSOC 9.1 9.2 from Charolotte, also WCCB Fox 18.1 18.2 18.3 from Charolotte, these 2 have knock WNCT and UNC 19 off my box.
Wait till tonight and tommorow night supposed to be real strong ducting!
I was doing some checking also and I don't think there is another 48 digital in NC so if you were picking up another 48 digital it was from out of state
Ken
jamieh1 06-24-05, 09:54 AM It was WUPN 48 thats what was on my display. also the programming showed Greensboro.
I dont think it was the digital, when I went to 48 the analog 48(WUPN)l was there, wouldnt lock on the WCTI channel. My HD box recieves analog and digital.
Another thing at night WNCT 9.1 , when I go to that channel it shuts off my reciever, after about 2 times of that it works, Im thinking its a overload from another channel.
I was recieving 48.1 48.2 (WUPN48) digital however, but it must of been 48 analog.
jamieh1 06-24-05, 10:25 AM Now Im getting WWWB 55.1 and 55.2 from Rock hill (charolotte WB) and WXII NBC from Winston salem its on 12.2 (NBC WEATHER PLUS) thats the only channel Im getting digitally from WXII
WCTI is off again.
easternncnewswat 06-24-05, 10:51 AM Talked with eng. at WFXI this morning--- they are still tweaking on thier equipment--- I could not get them Wensday night - they had a problem with electrical feed -- that night ----- have WFXI nice and clear this morning ---- sound levels were down about 20 DB and they are adjusting that----
With ducting JSP you should be able to get them -----
Good news is they are up and running with a digital signal---- bad news is it,s going to be a year or more for the HD signal------ and I do understand why----
Griff,
Can you enlighten the rest of us? Did they say anything about whether or not WYDO will come on? What's going on?
Now Im getting WWWB 55.1 and 55.2 from Rock hill (charolotte WB) and WXII NBC from Winston salem its on 12.2 (NBC WEATHER PLUS) thats the only channel Im getting digitally from WXII

WWWB-DT is channel 39 and WXII-DT is 31. WSOC-DT is channel 34 and WCCB-DT is channel 27.
Griff Thomasson 06-24-05, 12:17 PM Eastern------ I did not ask but next time I talk to them I will ask- what thier plans are-----
easternncnewswat 06-24-05, 03:34 PM Eastern------ I did not ask but next time I talk to them I will ask- what thier plans are-----
Cool, why no HD for WFXI though? Did they say?
StockInv 06-24-05, 05:41 PM I called Charter for a new HD Cable Box. The service rep told me there was a 4 to 6 week wait. I also asked him about the Moxi box and whether a new model was coming out in the near future. He said "no". I guess he had no clue.
Griff Thomasson 06-24-05, 06:27 PM WFXI going HD - what was explained to me was that they wanted to wait till they go full power---- within a year was what I was told - it was explained to me that it would cost them double to go HD now then again at full power---- so they are planning on going full power within a year or less - then it,s HD----
I was told that there were a bunch of legal issues that they had to deal with and that was being worked on ---????
I will say that the ENG that I talked to was as nice as he could be and had had a lot of heat to get digital signal up - he was so happy to finally have it up - with all the problems he had to deal with ----
I bet its the Grapvine company that owns WFXI and not the local folks that have been the problem. I have never heard anything negative about 8/14 staff themselves. I Think it is Grapevine that owns 8/14 isn't it? Or is it Piedmont? LOL I can't remember now...
I am scannin my box now to see what I can get. How high is your anntenna Jamielee? Maybe I need to raise mine some. I have it at about 25 to 30'
easternncnewswat 06-24-05, 10:28 PM Well, we said all along it was the corporate folks at Fox 8/14 that sucked; not the ordinary folks who worked there everyday! Hopefully, we'll get something on the air in Gville eventually. It probably won't be for another year though...
What happened to the ducting tonight? I was getting stations from all over the map last night and this morning, but absolutely nothing tonight! That sucks... I was hoping for some new screencaps to go with my Triad ABC, Wilmington ABC, Norfolk PBS, etc. Maybe I should be using this free time to edit them, put 'em on my page and upload them! *LOL*
I did not check for signals this morning, but last night I got nothing out of the ordinary. I think my amp is fouled up. I used to get Charleston and Richmond stations all the time. I have not seen WECT in weeks now.
I Think it is Grapevine that owns 8/14 isn't it? Or is it Piedmont? LOL I can't remember now...
Piedmont
Griff,
Do you still have your VHF disconneted or did you re-install it? If it is down how do you get WNCT dt? I am trying to figure out how to recieve WFXI dt. Tomorrow I plan to try a complete overhaul of my set-up LOL!!! I need some pointers from some of the experts. I am about 8-10 nautical miles outside the service contour
HERE is the map for WFXI service... New Bern actually has a better chance to get them than I do.
http://www.fcc.gov/ftp/Bureaus/MB/Databases/fm_tv_service_areas/maps/DS1056236.gif
easternncnewswat, check the out of market link on your webpage. It is pointing to the "remembered" link.
easternncnewswat 06-26-05, 08:12 PM Thanx foxeng! I have no idea how that happened... Must be some kind of weird fluke with Earthlink. Should be corrected now! Thanx again for the head's up!
Picked up WECT tonight but just lost them again... Signal is bouncing all over the place for that station only. I am going to try to raise my mast a little tomorrow and see if I can lock that or WFXI.
jamieh1 06-27-05, 09:45 AM Got a email from WRAL they asked me if Id grade there news. They sent me a survey about local news and then sent me a CD with a 6am WRAL newscast from 6/20. I had to watch it and it had a bar below the video that you slid left to right for interesting to boring, I had to watch it then submit it, they then said we will mail you $5 . It came from www.tvnewspoll.com
easternncnewswat 06-27-05, 02:44 PM Cool!
Griff Thomasson 06-27-05, 08:01 PM Jsp------- I have not reinstalled the vhf antenna --- just have not climbed back on the roof to put it back up--- WNCT does not have anything that we watch --- LOL and If it was someting I can get it off sat. if something comes up in HD that I want to see there - I,ll run up and put it back up------ LOL But I do think I will upgrade to a channel master antenna for the Vhf ---
I,m getting WFXI using the xg91 yagie ----
jamieh1 06-27-05, 08:11 PM Did anyone see the Billy Graham story on WITN 7 news at 11 Sunday night. The national reporter for NBC was Chris Justice formerly of WCTI 12. Good to see local guys moved up.
Keep your eye on WITNtv.com streaming video link and it may replay the sunday 11p news.
When I had FOX East on Directv the New York morning fox weather man Mike Woods use to be the WITN 7 part time weather guy, man go from DMA 105 to #1
Surprising Griff! All I look at is WNCT, WWAY and WCTI the majority of the time... LOL! I did not get a chance to work the antennas today, I had rain here again for one and car trouble to deal with. Also it was so Humid I could not take getting up to the height of the antennas.
Seems as though I remember Mike Wood, Was he on in the early and mid 80's? I was only a small child then!
jamieh1 06-28-05, 08:56 AM No in the mid to late 90s.
heres a link to his profile
www.fox5ny.com/_ezpost/data/11542.shtml
Oh Yea, Now I remember him. I guess I was confusing Wood with Woods... LOL!!
jamieh1 06-28-05, 10:41 AM What ever happened with Jim Woods? Has he passed away?
I believe John Spence has passed away, what about Slim Short?
easternncnewswat 06-28-05, 10:42 AM Jim Woods passed away last year. Last I heard Slim Short was still kicking, I believe. Not sure about John Spence.
easternncnewswat 06-28-05, 10:44 AM Ken12,
What's going on with PSIP on ABC 12 and UPN 48? I haven't seen anything for a few days. My stb is saying no data.
I meant to metion PSIP also and forgot. It was working one time yesterday. WWAY's has been off also... I dont know if it is ABC or what.
easternncnewswat 06-28-05, 11:23 AM It's probably localized. I noticed 9.2 has no data also. 9.1 is fine though.
Just checked here on a DTC 100 and have guide data dont know what the problem could be.
Ken
easternncnewswat 06-28-05, 02:05 PM It's working fine now.
banshee740 06-29-05, 11:19 PM are we still gonna have that sometime in july?
easternncnewswat 06-30-05, 01:15 AM are we still gonna have that sometime in july?
We'll see... Last I read, this was the case.
jspENC, did you see the news about Pax changing over to "I"? Apparently, they are rebranding themselves. They will still have Pax programming and the religion programming on the multicast channels. I would assume that means no more East/West programming. Maybe that's what you heard on the radio that day...
I did not read it yet eastern, I knew they were doing some kind of change... Hoping it was WB, oh welll LOL
What kind of name is "I"?
9.2 is boasting a WNCT dt Greenville LOGO under Neighborhood Doppler. I guess this is so they do not confuse images while working on the forecast? Thus not airing things they don't want us to see maybe,
easternncnewswat 06-30-05, 08:24 PM I did not read it yet eastern, I knew they were doing some kind of change... Hoping it was WB, oh welll LOL
What kind of name is "I"?
I would assume the "I" is going to stand for independent since they will be partnering with independent producers, studios, etc. I think they're just trying to find a niche to fill and stay afloat. Likewise, by running PAX on one of the multicast channels, I think they're trying to get the must carry stuff passed with the fed.
Interesting about WNCT 9.2... I wonder if this is a sign of things to come on that channel. They are real interested in starting a news/weather channel if I'm reading my e-mails with them correctly. Also, I think FCC guidelines state that sub-channels are supposed to be "labeled" so that viewers know what they are tuning to. Maybe this is just a case of that.
I'm crossing my fingers that WITN gives us what we've been waiting for tomorrow! And, I'm hoping WTVD and ABC give me back ABC News Now, which I still think has some potential to be something unique for an all news network. But I guess we shall see...
banshee740 06-30-05, 08:39 PM wow for some strange reason i can receive WNCT (both 9.1 and 9.2) and WLFL without problems (around 64-70% signal strength)
still no luck with WITN
How far are you from the Grifton Tower Banshee? I am 42 miles and have no trouble.
banshee740 06-30-05, 10:50 PM i have no idea where grifton tower is... i live in pirates cove, 10th street, gville
banshee740 06-30-05, 10:52 PM funny... now i'm having tourble picking up WNCT after my gf's gone... i had perfect reception while she's lying on my bed studying but now she's gone and 10% signal strength
inteference?
Sounds like you are overloading. Grifton tower is maybe 5-8 miles or so from you to the south. Can you reduce your gain on the antenna?
SO far no 7.2 weather station.
easternncnewswat 07-01-05, 02:01 PM I just got home for my lunch break and me is mucho disappointed all the way around!
banshee740 07-01-05, 11:10 PM i went to radio shack next to walmart and bought the adjustable attenutor and now WNCT works anywhere in my room
easternncnewswat,
Saw your comment on the WNCT subchannel ID on your website. The FCC started new ID requirements for digital stations July 1st and one of them is a way to ID subchannels that are not analog simulcast. The NBC Wx Plus started out with the new ID standard when they launched since it was in the 2nd DTV Review last September.
easternncnewswat 07-05-05, 11:52 AM Thanx for the head's up, foxeng. I thought that was probably the case for the "labeling" of 9.2 WNCT.
Ken12, there is no PSIP on WCTI 12.1 or 12.3. There hasn't been all weekend.
I guess with the holiday most stations were running on limited staffing. WRAL and WRAZ had no PSIP until this morning when WRAL was corrected. WRAZ still has no PSIP. I guess that's to be expected with finicky technology. *LOL*
Just came in from a long weekend, and I do not see a new WX station...:( Any news? I know I missed my digital reception while I was away!
easternncnewswat 07-05-05, 01:07 PM No new news here... I'll hazard a few guesses though:
1. GM gave jamilee the wrong date for the weather station launch.
2. Equipment is not installed and ready.
3. Decided there would be no viewership over a holiday weekend.
4. WITN hasn't gotten carriage for the channel on local cable systems.
5. It was all a big hoax to begin with.
Take your pick of the above, maybe there a few I haven't come up with. Actually, I'd rule out 1 and 5. I lean toward 2, then 4, and then 3. But who knows, these things seem to happen when we least expect them.
LMAO eastern!! I am going with 1 then 2 then 4 then 5 and lastly 3... lol
If Bertie is reading,
I would appreciate it a bunch if you could move the black identification banner off of Jacksonville. I cannot see the storms over my house. Maybe you could put it on the extreme bottom, or just move it to the top? Or maybe Phillip could adjust the doppler view? I always enjoy tuning in to see the VIpir, but now I have to go to a different source...
easternncnewswat 07-05-05, 04:31 PM jspENC,
Since we don't know for sure that Bertie is reading this forum, I would e-mail him directly about your request. I agree that I don't care for the black banner across the bottom. I don't know why they don't put up the Storm Team 9 logo with the call letters, time, city, etc. out over the ocean or up in the upper left corner. JMO.
jamieh1 07-05-05, 05:06 PM Ive emailed Mike at WITN, he's out till 7/6, I pass along the response once I get it.
easternncnewswat 07-05-05, 05:19 PM Cool, thanx jamielee! I bet it'll turn out to be an equipment issue... I doubt it's the cable carriage thing because you need to have something up and running before you can offer it as a service.
Hey, easternnc,
Thought I would let you know that the Media General station in Roanoke, VA, WSLS is doing the aural ID on their SuperVIPER radar channel. That is the first time I have ever seen VIPIR radar. Looks like lots of eye candy but with several radars on it. Beyond that, it isn't very useful. It is too general IMO.
easternncnewswat 07-05-05, 09:48 PM foxeng,
I'm not really sure about the aural ID, but I agree that VIPIR seems like a lot of eye candy. Of the 3 I've seen, I like WRAL's use of it the best. They seem to have a good handle on how to use it. WNCT does a pretty good job, but their version of VIPIR doesn't seem to be as "slick" as WRAL's. Maybe it's the corresponding graphics that WNCT is using with or maybe it's because it's not in HD. I dunno... WITN's new Advanced VIPIR, I've really yet to see how it stands out from WNCT's or WRAL's, for that matter. I know it's new to WITN, so maybe that's why we haven't seen much out of it yet. I've rarely seen it in 3D mode if at all on WITN. And it doesn't seem like they have really used the lightning, hail, etc features that go along with it.
I'd like to see the product that is supposed to be competitve to VIPIR. I'd like to see what it's all about. I just can't remember what the name of it is.
Here is WSLS's VIPIR channel http://www.w4cl.net/fox/WSLS10-2.jpg
I am seeing UNC analog channel 31 through WXII's DT on 31 tonight. Other than that, nothing from east. Most everything tonight is north south. WSOC on 34 wants to come in, but not enough to lock. Huricanes in the Gulf and the Altantic do strange things to the propagation.
easternncnewswat 07-05-05, 10:36 PM Cool, thanx foxeng! I've been getting WFMY and WUNC tonight. I had the Richmond Fox about locked in and then lost it. I locked it in once before but the screencaps were so crappy I didn't bother uploading them to my site. I want a clean image if I'm going to post it! *LOL* Been getting some hits from Norfolk also tonight. First out of market stuff I've had for about a week.
That Vipir is just like WNCT's And the logo is exactly like theres too. I don't know why they don't stamp it on the radar!?
jamieh1 07-06-05, 11:30 AM Heres my response from Mike at WITN on New Weather channel.
"The new system is being installed in lated July...Hopefully for a early august launch.
Channel postion is still to be decided."
sounds like we may have a 3rd ch on WITN DT.
Im going to email Mike back and ask if we can get ADVANCED VIPIR put on 7.2
jamieh1 07-06-05, 02:35 PM Just got response on possibally put advanced vipir up on 7.2,
working on these possibillites now...
easternncnewswat 07-06-05, 03:24 PM Wow, that's totally unexpected news, jamielee! I hope they do something very low bandwith if they're going to do a third channel on WITN. Since NBC is 1081i, I don't want to see them go the way of WNCN. With the HD channel, WeatherPlus, and a SD mirror of the HD channel, their HD channel is the pits and so is the SD for that matter. Of their 3 channels, WeatherPlus looks the best even over their HD channel! I hope WITN doesn't go that route. I'd rather have a low quality news/weather channel and radar on 2 channels and still have high quality HD on WITN.
Still, this is awesome news! I just hope we see something soon on WITN!
I guess they will do it as fast as they know how. Today 9.2 is focused in on Cindy around the Birmingham AL area. Does not look like it is headed our way!
jamieh1 07-06-05, 04:28 PM looks like WNCT could get better picture quality on 9.2
I raised my ant mast finally! I am now getting WECT dt at 15 db The minimal for reception. I guess I will get it in the evening and mornings only... It pixelates often
Eastern, when you picked them up before did you get a picture on WX plus? I get just a blank screen... Like when WNCT first turned on 9.2
easternncnewswat 07-06-05, 08:15 PM The one time I got WECT, yes I decoded WxPlus on 6.2. It looked like it was national though with no local breaks.
I can get audio on 6.2 but no video! I change resolutions and just get little color bits. I do not know how to fix this problem. I posted on it before on ILMHD but got no response.
Foxeng any insight?
jamieh1 07-06-05, 08:29 PM My 9.1 and 9.2 has been giving me problems for last month or so. When I go to the channel, my box powers off, then back on, then it works, put a attenuator on it and still shuts off.
easternncnewswat 07-06-05, 08:33 PM jamielee, this happened to me once and I think I was on channel 9 when it happened. I tend to do a lot of rescanning of channels as you might imagine and I haven't experienced it recently. Maybe that would help?
9 causes my box to reset from time to time also... I get four 0's like this--- 0000---- in my channel display then I have to re-scan everything. Also the clock on Wnct is about 4 minutes slow, but on the 9.2 ID strip it is correct... Crazy
WNCT answers back about WITN's Vipir radar in an ad clip just before Regis Aired this AM. THey say that they are not mad... LOL and are flattered that they were imitated!
easternncnewswat 07-07-05, 09:09 AM *LOL* I haven't seen that yet! Sounds amusing.
jamieh1 07-07-05, 03:43 PM WNCT has moved the black ID bar on 9.2, they now have ID in lower right corner
I just tuned in,
Thank you Bertie, Phillip and all the guys at WNCT! You guys act fast. :)
jamieh1 07-07-05, 05:31 PM Now if they could just clear up the picture.
easternncnewswat 07-07-05, 07:21 PM I did a piece on my webpage about the black bar id. I hope that helped get the word out to them in case they're not checking in on the forum. E-mail to the station is the most direct route though!
jamieh1 07-10-05, 05:15 PM Its good to finally have NASCAR in HD. Wished FOX would hurry up!
I saw the last 3 races in HD! VEry different when the picture is good! I hate FOX in this area. I wish something would change...
easternncnewswat 07-10-05, 09:04 PM At this point, I just wish they'd get WYDO up and running- even if it's only SD!
Griff Thomasson 07-11-05, 10:44 AM It,s great to have NASCAR in HD----I agree with all of you on FOX----
Still no word on when WSFX will be up to full pwr... :(
easternncnewswat 07-11-05, 04:46 PM Not much word on anything... :(
Still no word on when WSFX will be up to full pwr... :(
Wilmington isn't Top 100 is it? If not, then all stations are not required to be at full power until July 1, 2006, next year.
Last I heard, they were going to be up this summer. They are building out the facility now. Supposed to be at Full pwr by the end of fall is the rumor, but with them HD on cable right now I doubt it... I bet Foxeng is on track. I guess since we are 105 fxi/ydo will not do anything fast.
easternncnewswat 07-13-05, 09:20 AM I just received an update from Don Fisher at WFXI/WYDO on Fox 14...
We are currently working on plans to start with our digital project in Greenville. We have just completed a study on our Ayden tower and are on GO! to start our digital addition there. There is still considerable work to do and this project is still several months from completion. As we did with FOX 8, we will begin with a low power standard digital signal and proceed from there.
From this, it sounds like they are at least headed in the right direction. It also sounds like they may be up and running in Greenville by Fall or Winter at the latest. Although it's not going to be HD and only low power, at least they are working on getting a signal going. Glad to know something instead of nothing.
