I couldn't agree more. I'm sure NBC (corporate) would love to hear their affiliate (WTWC) isn't running the Sunday Night games in HD after they paid so much for the NFL rights. Brilliant!
NeonDeion 12-20-06, 09:04 AM I talked to the NBC engineer on Monday.
They are aware of the problem, and are working on it. They are now working with their 5th different HD receiver in order to solve the problem. It is a priority to them, but they think the problem comes from corporate when NBC shifts their signals from NY to Burbank--somehow that causes havoc with their receiver. I believe they were back in HD last night (Tuesday). Hopefully they have solved their problem.
Now, what is the latest with WTXL? They are still in SD. I thought jrcstudios indicated the problem was fixed?

dsmith901 12-20-06, 10:47 AM WTXL's biggest problem is the rock-heads in Little Rock, which apparently are beyond fixing. We will probably have to wait until April or May at the earliest to see ABC in HD on Comcast.
OompaLoompa77 12-23-06, 08:34 AM From my converstations with a few of their engineers. This is what I got from them. That they do not want to spend the money to fix the problem until they have to. Meaning that we all will have to wait until the FCC gets involved (the year 2009) and makes all stations go HD. Until then. They will only operate at minimum (if they even do) power.
I think that the CBS station manager is the only station manager that has HDTV. He is probably getting his feed through cable and not OTA or through satellite.
The other station managers do not want to spend the money they have. They are still stuck in the 1950's. They need to understand that this is 2007 (in 8 days) and not the 50's. The world has changed. Inventions and technology has changed.
I guess we all will have to contact their primary affiliates and complain or even refuse to watch their signal until they get their act together.
JRCStudios and FOXHD. This is no blame or disrespect on your behalf. We understand that you are trying. However you only have minimal resources to use since your station managers do not want to cough up the money to get the problems correct. They think that they can take small steps and we will live with it.

Briefly searching the primary affiliates' websites, I don't see a clear way to contact anyone at the networks about such a problem. Does anybody have any contact information for the national networks?

Does anyone think that the advertisers might be able to help? If yes, who would we need to contact? Does anyone know how much a 10 or 20 second ad on TV might cost?
Does anyone else have any idea's?
CapeFish 12-24-06, 07:06 PM BALTIMORE (December 22, 2006) -- Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc.
(Nasdaq: SBGI) announced today that it has agreed to renew the affiliation
agreement with NBC Universal for WTWC-TV in Tallahassee, Florida. The
agreement has a ten-year term that runs through December 31, 2016.
Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc., one of the largest and most diversified
television broadcasting companies, owns and operates, programs or provides
sales services to 58 television stations in 36 markets. Sinclair's
television group is affiliated with all major networks and reaches
approximately 22% of all U.S. television households. For more information,
please visit Sinclair's website at www.sbgi.net.
I hope NBC is going to force WTWC to have a newscast at 6 & 11 pm and this may also mean NBC Weather Plus is on the horizon.
dabassmonkey 12-27-06, 11:27 AM Saw this on WTXL's web site. Maybe there is hope for HD on ABC.
"This year ABC 27 has started construction of a new digital television facility to be located in Midway, Florida. When this new station is completed, ABC 27 expects to be the first local television station in the Thomasville-Tallahassee market to originate local news in High Definition!"
OompaLoompa77 12-27-06, 04:11 PM I saw it to. However, they do not have any info on communicating back to them. The feedback section about the general manager will be kicked back to you as "Delivery Failure".
So I emailed ABC major network. Still no reply.

Does the FCC mandate HD broadcast? I know they are mandated to go digital in Feb'09 (unless FCC changes the date again), but digital does not necessarily mean HD.
CapeFish 12-27-06, 07:31 PM The news on WTXL's website and the industry trends for new broadcast facilities over the last few months lends hope to ABC 27 News HD as soon as they move into their new house.
Good thing they have the anchors that they do.
What will WCTV do to beat this? WCTV would have to run to get the news in HD to beat WTXL.
Also, seems like WSWG has begun airing Eyewitness News as well.

To the best of my knowledge there is no federal mandate to broadcast in hidef. The mandate is to broadcast in the digital spectrum so the feds can use/sell the analogue spectrum. Whether a particular station broadcasts in hidef will be largely driven by market forces.

I think the law only requires they turn off their analog transmitters - they can transmit any quality they want as long as it is one of the 17 ATSC digital formats. And nothing has to originate in digital form - they can digitize VHS tape all they want, and there is no minimum bitrate, which probably explains the incredible crud transmitted by the local CW channel on Comcast. I have literally seen third generation copies of low quality VHS tape at the slowest speed that looks better than what CW provides on their network feeds. It is an abomination.

I wish WTXL well with HD News but we chose to invest our resources into other facets of the news (for starters, the radar tower in the parking lot was not cheap......).

It was a couple of nice additions with the Megawatt Doppler and WSI TrueView. Both WCTV/WSWG and WTLH viewers get better coverage of the weather with it, but is there anything in the works over at 6 dealing with the newsroom? Is Halstead all-digital already? If so, then HD wouldn't be such a big leap at least in-studio for things like Live at Five or the Good Morning Show which have interviews.
WTXL is likely going to upgrade their Galileo to HD or switch to another HD system when they move and if they get the Live NEXRAD feed like what the NWS gets at the Love Building, then they will have detailed sweeps (from the area NEXRAD radars) on the screen.
Tally is a 2 horse town (WFSU is a 3rd horse I guess, but they really don't have newscasts) and the front WCTV and trailing WTXL are upgrading alot in very little time.
All we need now is for NBC to force WTWC to start airing newscasts again and you'd have a full-time horse race.
BTW, kudos to WCTV for doing the news at 10 on FOX49 and at 7 on WCTV-DT2.
cbrf1wr 12-29-06, 09:09 AM Thinking about trying to get that over the air HD signal in Tallahassee again. Anyone having any luck receiving it in the Cap Cicle East Appalache PKWY Area? If you can what equitment/antenna are you using? I tried last year with terrible results. 1 station(CBS) about half the time if I was lucky. That was with a indoor/outdoor midrange antenna(located Outdoors) and old Sony Direct TV Receiver, which I have heard since was basically a piece of crap for trying to get the ATSC signal. Tired of being raped by comcast just to get the HD feeds. Might go back to Direct TV if something works.

Have you tried antennaweb? I live out in Chaires, but don't get HD OTA.
You should be able to get WFSU-DT, WCTV-DT, WTWC-DT, WTLF-DT, and WTXL-DT. Only WTLH-DT to wait for.
Have you tried a simple pair of rabbit ears with a new STB? Might work for you. It does for me down south in Cape Coral.

Tried Aantennaweb they say I am 29 miles from closest tower. Last year they said I was 9 miles from one tower and 21 to others pointing in different directions than today. I don't put much faith in antennaweb. I think they are just triing to sell antenna's. Does anyone know the real location of the broadcast towers here in TLH, and what power they are at? The FCC should keep a current list of this and be updated immediatly on changes. Just don't know where to find it on the web.
kaneboats 12-29-06, 03:22 PM Hey everyone. I follow this forum regularly but usually don't add much. Thanks to those who do. I have been paying Comcast $143 a month for internet and cable and I need to cut back. I have to keep internet for work, but the $99 for hundreds of channels I don't watch is just too much. I have 2 HD monitor type tv's (no tuner) so I have 2 HD boxes but only 1 is a DVR. I'm addicted to DVR so I want to keep it. I recall reading way back in this thread that you can get a "basic" package and add HD. The Comcast CSR I talked to seems to think I have to have the full digital service to keep the HDTV channels. Does anyone know if there is a cheap package and what it's called that I can simply add HDTV network channels and DVR to? I know I'll have to sacrifice TNT and ESPN HD channels but once the bowl season is over it doesn't matter too much. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Same Boat as you. Here is the deal. You can get the basic HD package, but there are drawbacks, NO DVR, must have TV with HD Tuner and a comcast card or a box from comcast or bestbuy that gives you component cables only. Basically kiss the HD-DVR goodbuy. The only way you get DVR is with a digital package($69permonth and up) Looks like the only way to get what we want is the OTA(Over the Air) Signal on a DirectTV/DISH Net HD-DVR. Even then I don't know if the DVR will work on OTA Signals I think they do, but OTA signal is next to impossible unless you live right next to the towers. We are all screwed in TLH until those locals are broadcast in HD on the satilite's. They always tell you by next year we will have Local in HD and they say it every year, and they all LIE.

I live near Tom Brown Park Just off Apalachee PKWY and I have a WineGard GS2000 amplified antenna. I am able to get WTXL, WTWC, WCTV and WTLH all with a 90 + signal and WFSU most of the time with a 60 + signal. All of the big four have very good picture but FOX drops out a lot.
I have seen someplace if you have a QAM tuner in your TV you can hook the cable directly to your TV and scan for local digital signals and pick them up. If an antenna want work and the QAM does you should be able to get the locals for about $12 a month.

Where do you get your info on the stations digital broadcast strength? According to the FCC data I can see, the only stations broadcasting at full strength on their digital signal are WCTV and WFSU. Your list seems to indicate that WTWC is now at full power as well. Just curious.

Here you can actually get the strength. and a visual pin point of the towers from your location. You can also add other markets as well.

Thanks for the link. This confirms the FCC data I have. It shows WTWC's transmission power at 9.2kw, whereas WCTV's is at 1,000kw. Are they going to up the power any time before February 2009?

I think you are forgetting one thing; WTWC is broadcasting on the low VHF range, while WCTV is broadcasting on the UHF range. Their power requirements are different. The other factor is that WTWC already has told the FCC back in 2005 they have chosen to go back to channel 40 UHF for the post digital transition, that is why there will be no changes with their current channel allotment, since it will not be there in 2 years. WCTV, however has chosen to stay at 46 UHF for their post digital transition and is at full power already since that way, they don't have anything else they need to do.

9.2 kw is at rf channel 2 vhf. This is all you will get until the change over then they will convert the analog tx to digital
CW pic quality should improve by end of next week found some problems, now to get them fixed.

Are you getting the ATSC Digital signal or just the analog? If you are getting the digital what kind of receiver are you using or does your TV have a QAM? My TV does not have a QAM. I just tried again and the only digital I get is PBS with a brand new ATI 650 Digital PVR Card in my PC and a TERK TV 55 amplified antenna outside. Bought the PVR Card just to see if things had changed since last year before I try to sign back up with Direct TV, and they have NOT. I will be returning it promptly. Just about ready to give up on this until next year again. I am resigned to sign back up Direct TV and suffer the ridiculous network TV feeds they receive here in TLH. I remember Channel 49 was like watching TV on rabbit ears with a 1970's model TV. Comcast just charges TOO MUCH.

I am getting the ATSC digital signal over my antenna my TV does have QAM but it is only good for cable and I don’t have cable. I actually get 12 digital channels over the antenna. WCTV(2), WTXL(2), WTWC(2) WTLH(2) WFSU(4). I have my antenna connected to a Dish VIP 622 it will only pickup digital signals. I can also get the same channels plus the analogs if I connect the antenna directly to my Panasonic plasma TV. My antenna is outside mounted on the Dish mast. Unless you have something blocking your signal from the East you should be able to get the networks.
cbrf1wr 01-01-07, 10:51 AM Thanks for the Info. My Antenna was blocked to the east when I tested. I thought the towers were more located more north than east. That is what antennaweb said anyway. I hope the Direct TV HD-DVR Receiver works as good as the Dish version on the ATSC Signal. That is what I am going with. Sunday Ticket is a rip off, but it is the only way to get the good NFL games.

Well, it is North East.
We've had our fun by watching all the bowls in ESPN HD. Now the fun is over as the BCS bowls are all on Fox or ABC. The reason we are watching Penn State and Tennessee right now is the Outback Bowl is the only one we can watch in HD. All the other pictures look like crap with DirecTV. Can we get waivers or convince the DirecTV customer service reps to give us the East Coast locals?
Otherwise, do the HDTV indoor antennas work? I need to get a signal down to my basement.
Thanks!

It would be great if the engineers on this board would post updates to the FCC motions their stations are going through. Happy New Year!
I am pretty sure that WTLH is running licenced now on the 230 KW full tower now. I get the station at full strength, though i do live just 17 miles from the towers. Sometimes the FCC's database does not fully update itself for a while.

I wasn't sure so I included both just in case.
BTW, it appears 40.2 will be losing The Tube as Sinclair seems to be dumping it.

CW pic quality should improve by end of next week found some problems, now to get them fixed.
Since CW video quality can't get much worse.... I notice that some shows on CW Comcast (syndications) that run from 6-7 PM weekdays are of reasonable but not great quality, but at least they don't make my eyes hurt. Then the CW network shows come on at 8 PM, most of them originating in HD ("where available") and instead of improved PQ they actually look like crap - much worse than the syndicated shows. What is the problem with the CW network feed to local area? I see tons of artifacts and what looks like analog (RF?) noise, constant flucuations in brightness and resolution, noise bands that come and go, and overall low resolution, like I am watching a 3rd generation VHS tape recorded at the SP speed. And there is still that annyoing audio hum that is part of the audio signal. Tallahasse CW is by far the absolute worst digital station in the history of modern TV transmission, and that 480i designation looks more like 240i to me. Any and all efforts to improve it will be greatly appreciated.
Trek2000 01-02-07, 10:45 AM Is anyone out there using a Dish 622 for your OTA signal? I’m using a 622 and I get a clean signal digital signal from WTXL, WTWC and most of the time from WCTV but with WTLH I get constant dropout even though it has a strong signal.
If I hook my antenna up directly to my TV I have no problem with WTLH. I watched the Fiesta Bowl last night with no dropouts. Has anyone else noticed this with their 622?
rrmcdonald 01-02-07, 10:55 AM I have a 622 and have the same problem, with a constant signal of 95-98. I was hoping they just still needed to tweak the microwave transmission and was going to post something for WTLHFOX HD. Generally the other OTA signals work well for me with the 622 (I haven't tried a direct OTA into the tv as the tv with the 622 does not have its own HD tuner)
Trek2000 01-02-07, 12:24 PM One thing I have noticed when I switch between my 622 and my TV is the 4X3 content on WTLH HD is stretched to fill the screen on my TV. It shows as 4X3 when I run it through my 622. All the other stations local HD stations’ 4x3 content shows up as 4x3 on my 622 and my TV. I wonder if that might cause a problem for the 622 for some reason.
gatormark67 01-02-07, 02:03 PM I am getting the ATSC digital signal over my antenna my TV does have QAM but it is only good for cable and I don’t have cable.
I live in roughly the same area as you, as well as the same receiver and I am trying to get this figured out.
Do you need to run a separate line to the receiver. There isn't a way to tie into the line already run is there?
Thanks!!

When I got my receiver my installer ran a separate coaxial from my antenna and it’s connected to the receiver where it says Antenna/CATV. Because of the way mine is setup he had to use a multiplexer in there somewhere.
I just purchased a Phillips Indoor HDTV Antenna at Walmart. Model MANT510. I connected it to my DirecTV HD DVR and am only able to pickup WCTV and FSU channels. My goal is to get FOX so I can at least watch the rest of the BCS bowls in HD. What can I do to resolve this?
curious to see if anyone is seeing HD locals via ota

The best thing to do is get the original Silver Sensor. If sears does not sell it anymore, Amazon.com has it. It will pick up your channels except for WTWC NBC because it is on channel 2 digitally.

I live west of Valdosta (20-25 miles) and I get WTWC, WTXL, and WCTV. WTLH comes in strong (95-98) on my DISH 622 but it drops out too much to be watchable.
I have a 622 and have the same problem, with a constant signal of 95-98. I was hoping they just still needed to tweak the microwave transmission and was going to post something for WTLHFOX HD. Count me in as another 622 owner with the same problem. Maybe we're on to something here!
It seemed good for a day or two after WTLHFOXHD said they had fixed the microwave, but unwatchable since.
WTLHFOXHD, any ideas?
WTLHFOXHD 01-03-07, 03:23 PM Hello I have discovered a problem many of you already know of and have. The Dish 622 box will lockup/drop out when receiving WTLH Fox49's feed. You probably don't have a problem with your antenna if you receive the other stations without problems.
The problem is on our end and involves timing (pcr). The microwave should not be the problem can't blame it anymore have to find something else.
I am working on it with help from Dish. More as I can.
It won't help if you record but if you have a receiver in your television go it it and you should see the feed without problems.
I will get you digital tv (watchable) before Feb 09 (may in Jan 09 but will be before Feb)
rrmcdonald 01-03-07, 03:35 PM Thanks, WTLHFOX. The sooner the better, as I am finding I am watching other shows in HD when I would rather be watching FOX
Trek2000 01-03-07, 03:46 PM Thanks for working on the problem I do get a good picture over my TV receiver. It will be nice to be able to record FOX also.
sbturner 01-03-07, 09:36 PM Hey WTLHFOXHD, I also have the same problem with my 622 which is very frustrating with a 80-90 signal. I read on another board about the same problem with a FOX station out of Austin, Texas. Could it be something in the FOX stream. Maybe they figured it out in Austin. It could be some place to check. By the way did you mean by Feb 09 or 07?
houselog442 01-03-07, 11:58 PM That must be why alot of people are having problems with WTLH and I have not had any. I use my TV's built in digital tuner to pick up the channels.

I am not sure exactly what is going on since i have no problems getting WTLH with my tv's built in tuner, but i may have an idea. When I lived in central florida, WCJB ABC in Gainesville was just going up in digital and at the time I was using a Dish 811 HD reciever to tune the channels in. The first few days there were serious problems having dropouts and even problems just changing the channel. I discovered that the PSIP the digital channel sends out to identify the station was messed up on their end, it would send the information and then not send it and then send it again. Some receivers, this problem will screw up the reception of the channel, so that might be a possbile cause of the problem. But my digital tv tuner never had a problem with that station, and it has no problem picking up WTLH HD now.
Thanks WTLHFOXHD! Is there anything we can do from our end? (Like call and complain to Dish or to WTLH?
The new season of 24 and American Idol is almost upon us! :o
dsmith901 01-04-07, 09:06 AM WTLHFOXHD,
Did you do anything to the CW feed to Comcast? I checked a recorded program from Tuesday night (VM) and the picture was a lot cleaner than before, but still soft and looked very low-rez. But at least contrast was normal and not washed out like before. Not sure about the audio, though I still heard the hum on a 6 PM program last night (Wednesday).

sansabar 01-05-07, 07:18 AM I live between Valdosta and Quitman in a low-lying area surrounded by trees. I use the large Channel Master antenna (can't recall the #) and their best amplifier (again, can't recall the #) and run a separate SAT/TV signal line (no diplexing) and get all of the HD locals, including Fox49. I have recently lost NBC40 and I'm not sure why. I can say that my HD locals started coming in much better after the upgrade to the DirecTV HR20 from the H10. I used to have dropouts but this new box seems to do a much better job stabilizing things.
sansabar 01-05-07, 07:28 AM I've been trolling here for a while and finally decided to join. Lot's of good info here!
I have been receiving my HD locals via my OTA/DirecTV HR20 combination but have recently lost NBC 40.1 It is continually searching for the signal. No problems with the other local HD network broadcasts. I haven't seen any posts with others having this problem, it always seems to be Fox.
Anyone else experiencing this?

Okay, but you don't control the budget it appears.
FYI, last night I checked out Smallville on Tally Comcast and PQ was not good, though better than previous weeks. It is broadcast in WS so when PQ is good on WS programs I like to zoom the picture on my TV (42" Panasonic ED plasma) and the best shows still look good. But when I do that on CW shows it just blows up all the bad stuff. On CW last night the zoomed picture showed horizontal lines (bands?) of varying intensity that ruined PQ, as well as the usual RF artifacts I have been seeing. Contrast was closer to normal - in the past I had to adjust contrast to zero to get a decent picture, and reduce brightness as well. The audio hum is still there also. I hope this feedback helps in your fix.

I just spent a few minutes -1/5/07 5:20pm, raining- looking at both the 49.1 and 49.2. During the time I watched, no dropouts on either of them!
As I recall, previously they both dropped out fairly equally.
I'm getting a signal fluctuation between 70 and 74 currently. When getting dropouts it seemed more like 0 - 90.
Checked the other digitial channels also.

WCTV CBS - 6.1, 6.2 Signal 95-98
WTXL ABC - 27.1, 27.2 Signal 72-73 (apparently running some sort of dolby test on 6.1. Fixed graphic with a voice reading Right Channel, Left Channel Etc)

I am about to buy a new HDTV and have been trying to read up on the Tallahassee area situation. I am sorry to hear about all the troubles, but I confess, most of what this previous post says is not part of my vocabulary! I have a few questions ...
First of all, the set I am getting has a QAM tuner and I currently get basic analog Comcast. Are all the troubles everyone is having only related to the OTA signals? WIth a QAM tuner, do I need to subscribe to the Comcast HD package, or do any channels come in clear without that? If so which ones?
If I upgrade my Comcast service to include HD, do all the channels come in good? If I am paying extra for HD, I damn sure expect HD!
ALso, what does all this mean:
WTWC NBC 40.1, 40.2 Signal 97-99
What is "The Tube"
Thanks!

I do not have Comcast but I have heard that if you have a QAM tuner and you hook your cable up directly to the TV you can pickup the local HD channels. I not sure what channels they will come in on. The ABC channel is not on Comcast yet as far as I know. To get any other HD channels you will have to get their HD package.
WTWC NBC 40.1, 40.2 Signal 97-99 - Over the air signal strength
The Tube was a music video on the second WTWC channel.
Pflanz1 01-06-07, 10:01 AM I upgraded my DirecTV DVR and now it seems not to have enough signal strength to pull in NBC OTA. It is continually saying "searching for Signal. It worked fine with the previous HD DVR. I swapped them out for future planning, and put the old on a non HD TV.
Has NBC lowered its signal strength recently. I know it is broadcasting because I can hook my OTA antenna directly to the TV and get it fine. However I lose the ability to use the dvr for OTA channels.
If I use a splitter on the antenna line and feed oneside directly to the TV and the other to the DVR, there is not enough signal strength on the DVR for NBC, FOX , and of course ABC, so all I get is the CBS channels. On the TV side I can get CBS, NBC, Fox, but not ABC ( but no DVR functionality).
Am I using the proper splitter? Is there a special one for HD channels..or is there such a thing as one that will amplify the signals? Do they even work.
Any word on NBC increasing signal strength or ABC coming up to anything close ot full power?
BTW, I am located north of I-10 between Mahan and Miccosukee

I have a Winegard GS2000 amplified antenna connected to a Dish 622 I usually get 95 + on all the networks. NBC has not changed as far as I know it’s usually always around a 100. I split my signal right at the amplifier(with just a regular splitter I have had for years) and run it to my TV so I can get FOX without dropout. My signal stays the same both on my 622 and my TV. I live just off the Apalachee Parkway near Tom Brown Park.

Well, I guess I spoke too soon. Just checked again.
Both 49.1 and 49.2 are dropping out. They seem to be somewhat equal. Small drop outs then a loss of signal, then signal recovery. Signal level bouncing between 72-76 then 0.

Altough at the end of the article it says....

WTLHFOXHD... Can you help me get 49 in HD for the BCS National Championship on Monday night? I live out Centerville Road near Bradley's. I can pick up WCTV with the antenna I bought to use with my DirecTV HR20 DVR.
Thanks!!
Pflanz1 01-07-07, 07:38 AM Yes, I found it very strange, that when I put my older Tivo style HD DVR reveiver from DTV on I get everything, but ABC...but if I put the new unit on, I lose NBC and still do not get ABC, but I get fox and CBS. I suspect I do not have an amplified antenna, even though I spent a good deal on it and the installation. I was hoping to find a contraption that I could use ot amplify the signal from the antenna inside the house either beofre splitting it or before the input to my receiver.
Pflanz1 01-07-07, 07:38 AM It becomes moot once Tallahassee gets hd Locals by DTV, but my guess is that is at least a year away.
UNC8185 01-07-07, 10:17 AM Hi,
I finally purchased a HDTV set. The previous owners of our house had a Winegard GS-1100 (non-amplified) hooked with a combiner to a Direct TV dish. The 4 lines from the Phase III dish are then sent to 4 separate outlets (6 currently presentin house). This situation has created some problems.
1. Antenna - I am able to get CBS, ABC, NBC regularly. Fox comes in some of the time. I can't get WFSU, which is my wife's only desired. I tried a small amplified Radioshack indoor/outdoor antenna, but it didn't work after a day. I am now trying a larger Radioshack outdoor/indoor antenna (model 15-2187). When I hooked it up outside, it worked fairly well. However, I will have to permanently mount it in the attic. The 15-2187 is fairly directional; I may have problems getting the networks at 60-66 degrees and PBS at 241 degrees. I have considered an upgrade of the current antenna to an amplified GS-2200.
There appears to be few long-distant options for HDTV. I was able to get analog signals from Columbus, Dothan, and Panama City. However, these were quite snowy. I do wish that I was able to put up a large roof mounted antenna with a powerful amplifier and rotor.
I check daily for the announcement that Tallahassee locals are scheduled to debut on DirecTV. I hope they hurry up.
2. Right now, we have SD DirecTV with a Micosoft Ulitimate DVR. We are about to upgrade to a HR20. The installer will have to run another cable to the DVR. We also want to add HD and an HR20 to the master bedroom. This will require another cable run. I am hopeful that a masterswitch is available that can feed 7 or so lines and supply OTA to each outlet.
Despite these problems, I am very glad to be aboard!

The forum would not allow me to instert the link to the PNJ, but you can Google it and see what it says.
WTLHFOXHD 01-07-07, 06:54 PM Don't hold you breath on HD Local into Local. Maybe this century but I doubt it will be this decade.
My guy at DirecTv told me to expect the call from them to do the site eval around the end of Jan. Feb. They will be installing there collection eqp. at our site again. I will post when they come to look.
sansabar 01-08-07, 06:33 AM I upgraded my DirecTV DVR and now it seems not to have enough signal strength to pull in NBC OTA.
I am having the same problem with 40-1. I believe it has something to do with the HR20 as many people across the country are having similar problems with this particular receiver and some local HD OTA broadcasts. I get all of the other HDs and even get the program guide for NBC 40 but no signal on the HR20 - BUT - I can get 40-1 on my older H10 using the same OTA antenna. So by process of elimination, it's the HR20. All you can do is wait for the next software upgrade and hope it fixes the problem.
rrmcdonald 01-08-07, 09:31 AM WTLHFOX HD, got home last night and, as with the other 622 users, my 49.2 also drops out. It was hard to tell if at the same time as 49.1 as as last night as they were both constantly pixelating and dropping the signal. It shows reception above 95.
Thanks for working on this!
dsmith901 01-09-07, 11:21 AM I have started a rewire that will help some. There is still old equipment that will have to stay. And I am afraid that they killing the signal.
more as I can.
This is in reference to the CW channel on Comcast. Will re-wiring help with those horizontal lines that make my plasma look like a interlaced CRT? The lines come and go, so I assume it has something to do with a stable signal. Also, can you do anything about the hum on the audio signal?

dabassmonkey 01-10-07, 07:06 PM Got a postcard from Comcast today basically saying that they may be forced into removing WTWC's HD signal from their service on February 5th. Greaaaat.
CapeFish 01-11-07, 05:49 PM WTWC may disappear altogether from Comcast soon as Sinclair is asking for money to carry the signal.
Comcast could add WJHG and/or WALB to their cable system...they are both significantly viewed stations in Leon, Wakulla, & Gadsden Counties according to the FCC which should prevent WTWC from forcing Comcast to blackout the NBC programs.
BTW, a note of kudos to all the stations as of late. WCTV's newscasts seem to be going better and their picture has improved on Comcast. WTXL's move was painful, but the promise of the new building and the resolution of the analog signal issues from Little Rock seem to be resolved. WTLH adding the 10pm newscast (benefiting from WCTV's News improvements) and the picture on Comcast is not bad at all. WTWC is providing a good picture but that may soon end. WFSU is delivering the goods by multicasting during the day and then going HD at night. 4FSU and the Digital Channels look good on Comcast.
BTW, I added the Comcast Digital Cable Starter Pack (only a $1.50 more than Basic cable and that includes the digital box) and now I have access to WCTV DT2, C-SPAN2 (got addicted to the Senate proceedings in a Government class...it is just fun to watch), and the WFSU Digital Channels. I think they may be offering a similar deal with the HDTV box and service for just $5 to the Digital Cable Starter Pack so you don't have to get the Digital Basic Service which is around $60.
BTW, free HBO for 3 months (January to April for most) from Comcast. Call them and ask! They offered it to me....but remember that you have to cancel it before the free preview ends or you will be billed the $13-some a month for it. Those with HD boxes would get HBO HD with this I believe.
Also, The CW on Comcast Channel 6 looks good enough to my eye on my analog sets.

If I remember correctly up until about 9 years ago Tallahassee Comcast actually had 2 NBC's one on Channel 28 which was WALB and Channel 12 WTWC. I think when WTWC started a news broadcast Comcast dropped WALB from the lineup. I don't care where I get my NBC as long as it has a reliable HD broadcast, I don't want to miss Heroes in HD.
From Wikipedia: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WALB) Until 1983, WALB doubled as the NBC affiliate for Tallahassee, Florida. Although WTWC-TV has been Tallahassee's NBC affiliate since then, WALB still provides city-grade coverage to much of the Georgia side of the Tallahassee market and grade B coverage to Tallahassee itself.
engineer760 01-12-07, 09:39 AM I've heard rumous that WTXL is in the process of upgrading its studio to enable it to produce its newscasts in HD... perhaps in time for Feb sweeps. Anyone know about this?

They are building a new digital facility, but its not expected to be operating until April at the earliest. So maybe we will get ABC in HD for the May sweeps.

Would WALB on Comcast be in HD? If so, tell WTWC to go suck an egg!
Texadillo 01-12-07, 12:44 PM Would WALB on Comcast be in HD? If so, tell WTWC to go suck an egg!
It looks like WALB has not gone digital yet.

Texadillo 01-12-07, 01:45 PM I live in Valdosta, GA and use mediacom.. it has WALB in HD
That is great. Hopefully Comcast will work out something with one of them.
CapeFish 01-12-07, 03:03 PM WALB's tower went down in the tragic Military Crash incident along with the FOX station up there. But what stops Comcast from fibering in WALB-HD and WALB 10 to replace WTWC-HD and NBC 40?
Comcast in Tallahassee could carry WJHG and WALB along with WTWC and have no problems doing so with the FCC.
This Tallahassee-Albany-Panama City-Dothan TV area has so many significantly viewed stations according to the FCC that everyone could get 2 CBS, 2 NBC, and possibly 2 ABC stations on cable if the cableco wanted to carry it.

shawnmos 01-12-07, 10:49 PM Hi everyone, I just got an HDTV Tuner card for my PC because I was hoping to beable to record shows in HD. However I haven't been able to pick up anything. I bought a Radioshack 15-2186 Amplified HD antenna and haven't been able to pick up anything other than PBS and FOX.
I have only been able to get ABC and CBS momentarily before it would cut out. I haven't been able to get NBC to pick up at all. I mainly watch NBC too. :( I live at the top of High Road. Any suggestions?
houselog442 01-13-07, 04:30 PM Well I bet lots of people got to agree with me on this one but I think WCTV has done everything they could today to totally piss me off! They decided not to show the HD game of Ohio State vs Tennessee that was a very exciting, close game and instead show a syndicated non-hd game of Florida vs South Carolina that was a boring 40 point blowout! (and everyone knew that was gonna happen) Then to top that they showed the end of the ohio state game in SD and the pregame show in SD.
houselog442 01-13-07, 04:31 PM Ok, they finally opened it up so the football game is up in HD.
salvatorep 01-13-07, 06:19 PM Im using a powered Terk silver sensor clone OTA antenna and the DirecTV HR20 receiver. The receiver shows a constant 85%-95% signal on 6-1 and 6-2 for both tuners.
Watching the Colts and Ravens game at the moment and while the picture quality is good (and constant), the audio drops out every few minutes. Not sure if its the receiver, the antenna, or the combination; anyone else experiencing audio issues on WCTV-DT?
Thanks.
Postscript: My signal percent is similar for Fox, but its picture and audio are near perfect.
shawnmos 01-13-07, 08:04 PM Ok it looks like ABC is broadcasting OTA in HD right now but for some reason the signal keeps cutting out. This really sucks.

I would suspect the HR20 receiver. Lots of people all over the country are having similar problems.
Have you tried resetting the HR20?

rabblerouser 01-14-07, 05:41 PM Right now I am getting every local HD channel, but have to use three different Directv boxes to tune them (off the same antenna feed).
THe new HR20 gets only 27.1.
The old Hughes box gets only Fox
A HR 10 gets 6.1, 40.1 and sometimes the others.
Any theories?

If the game comes down in HD we have to pass it. We have no control over this. Unlike 6 there is no button we have to push. As for no one to answer there is only one mco there and we won't let them answer the outside lines.
salvatorep 01-14-07, 10:57 PM Both NFL games (CBS and Fox) came through in HD OTA today. The Fox game was flawless, but the CBS game had constant dropouts. Similar posts at dbstalk.com saw the same issues as I posted above for CBS, and a resetting of the HR20 didnt have an effect. I'll upgrade to the newest software version this evening during the beta window, but Im skeptical.
24 had a few dropouts, but not as many as the CBS game this evening.

If you start having HD problems again, check the CBS and NBC HD channels plus like InHD or something on Comcast. If all three of those are in SD too, it's probably your cable box or something on your end.

Basically you rent a Digital STB to get WCTV2, C-SPAN2, the WFSU Digital channels, the Music Choice Channels, and OnDemand for $1.50 more a month over Regular Analog Cable.

Does it include local networks (WCTV, WTWC, WTXL, WTLH) in HD also (when they manage to transmit HD)?
dsmith901 01-19-07, 02:58 PM So I guess many of you saw WTXL go completely off air for about 30 minutes starting a little after 8 PM Thursday, just as the top rated ABC programs were starting. After about 15 minutes I called and they said an engineer was on the way. I assume someone in Little Rock screwed up again? Anyone know what happened?
Funny that WTXL never has problems staying on air except when top rated shows or FSU football games are being broadcast. If I didn't know better I would say someone at WTXL is sabotaging their service.
sbturner 01-19-07, 08:55 PM Hey WTLHFOXHD, I found this on AVS forums. It looks like it may be a fix for the Dish 622 problem.
The engineer at the Fox station in Memphis has allowed me to share their solution to the problem. Here is his post from the AVS forum:
"The exciter is an Axcera DT2B, and the bad firmware is version 4.25a. The one that we rolled back to is version 4.18c. The issue we have had with that version was that the exciter loses its output when there is a disruption of the SMPTE 310 transport stream input. This, however, happened pretty rarely, and is preferred over lots of people not being able to see American Idol from using version 4.25a!"
WTLHFOXHD
I researched and found the thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9513976&highlight=Axcera+DT2B#post9513976) that sbturner is referring to. VERY promising!
Please let us know what you find out. 24 and American Idol in SD sux!
CapeFish 01-21-07, 11:19 AM Does it include local networks (WCTV, WTWC, WTXL, WTLH) in HD also (when they manage to transmit HD)?
You need to rent the HD box which for the $5/month includes some other HD channels other than the locals.
So what you asked is,
Full Basic Cable ($48.95) + HDTV Pack ($5.00) = $53.95+tax
NeonDeion 01-22-07, 01:45 PM Sinclair's recent retransmission agreement with Time Warner Cable covers WTWC, so the Tall market will not lose the NBC signal in early February. This is good news.

Hmm, we are using Comcast so it might not apply here. I'd rather Comcast tells them to take a flying leap and carry WJHG or WALB digital. Keep 40 on 12 analog, but use another for the DT (who knows how to do HD).

Last word I hear is that they are moving the news to the new building end of Feb./beginning of March. They will use a news truck and still use Little Rock for master control (read that to mean still no proper switching of the HD)
Anyone in the area got this problem of mine ?
Lately, CBS signal kept on dropping down from 80+ to zero for a second and then back to 80+.
This happens at any time of day. Sometimes it goes hour without problem. Does not seem to be weather related.
I have a CM 3106 (I think) installed in the attic.
Is this problem Multipath ? What would you suggest that I try ?
BTW, It only does this to CBS. It happens on two different receivers (1 D* HDTivo, and 1 Hughes HD Receiver).
TIA.
PBSengineer 01-22-07, 04:02 PM Several people have mentioned it. Seems like WCTV may be having transmitter problems.
Engineer, anyway for us to let them know ?
I hope to get it squared away by Superbowl. It was unbearable watching AFC Champ Game with the problem.

If Comcast wants to dump 40 off 12 analog as well go right ahead....as long as you get WJHG or WALB in there to fill in.
DO IT COMCAST!
Sinclair needs to improve 40. Improve the HD, get a news department, and get a new owner!
Trek2000 01-22-07, 08:06 PM I have had problems with WCTV for a while. Sometimes I get intermitted dropouts and sometimes I don’t but happens with them a lot more than it does with any other station.
Hey WTLHFOXHD
In this thread (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=73419&page=3) over on dbstalk, there is more discussion of the 622 problem.
It looks like Birmingham, and Austin are still having the problem and are also using different equipment than Memphis. Perhaps the three (or more) of you can put your heads together.
If it is an E* problem, there are a bunch of people who can/will put some pressure on for cooperation. If it a national Fox feed problem... Likewise.
We'll probably need to get you all to give us some technical details to help us make our case.

I noticed 24 looked like it had been zoomed last night. The FOX logo in the corner was barely visible. Wasn't sure if I was the only one seeing it.

It's that way most of the time on my TV or at least part of it is cut off.

I think this is how it is supposed to be, when I watch the Simpsons or Family Guy the FOX logo is in the same location and cut off.

Same here on WFXL-DT. I was told that it had to do with an "overscan" issue of the TV.
I have an old picture of the issue (picture (http://members.aol.com/dreamworker23/100_0239.jpg)) taken a couple of years ago. Notice that the "1" in "31" is off the screen, as is "L" in "WFXL".
What's really annoying is that sometimes, WFXL-DT's logo will appear twice on the screen (once in the corner, and once in the middle part of the screen down at the bottom). Unlike the above issue, this actually is WFXL-DT's problem.

The FOX logo appears that way on every display I have seen, so it is not an overscan issue with any particular set. I assumed it was deliberate as FOX's way of showing the log without imposint itself too much on the screen, which if true they are to be applauded (softly). Network logos are a major gripe with me, especially since they seem to get bigger and more intrusive all the time. But my biggest wish that someone would burn in hell is for whoever thought it was a good idea to use those incredibly annoying moving promos with loud irritating noises that pop up whenever a show comes out of commercial break. I think it is time for the FCC to step in and put some limitations on these things, at least for OTA networks which use public airways.
jrcstudios 01-24-07, 05:40 PM Engineer, anyway for us to let them know ?
I hope to get it squared away by Superbowl. It was unbearable watching AFC Champ Game with the problem.

jrcstudios 01-24-07, 05:51 PM So I guess many of you saw WTXL go completely off air for about 30 minutes starting a little after 8 PM Thursday, just as the top rated ABC programs were starting.
You'd think! Me too, as I was out sick with a terrible virus when I got the call and barely had enough energy to crawl to the TV and see "NO SIGNAL" That's my luck, on a day I called in sick.
I had to get my wife to drive me to the transmitter, where I found a bad APC UPS that was no longer working. That power feeds the sat dish that we get the signal from Equity with. It actually wasn't fault with Equity this time. I'll be glad when I can rip out all this "temporary" crap and run our signal ourselves.

First of all a big thank you for the heroic effort to keep us TV junkies getting our fix. I hope you are feeling better - live long and prosper, as they say.
So can you give us any good news regarding the new station, and mainly as to when they expect to get back to HD on Comcast?
Thanks again.
hunter0008 01-25-07, 06:32 PM Does anyone know when Tallahassee will be getting The Golf Channel in HD (or at least certain Golf Channel events)?
(There is a thread on this but I'm not allowed to post an actual link until I have 5 posts;-)
Comcast seems to be carrying it in other cities throughout the U.S.
Additionally, are we going to have to wait until the new ABC studios is built nearby to get HD for that channel? Was the 1-day of HD back in November just a tease? Too bad :(

I presume you are a golf fanatic. As for me I would much prefer that any new HD channels be CW, FX, SciFi, and any of the better free movie channels on Comcast. My guess is Tally Comcast ain't gonna do its customers any such favors until pushed by competition from Verizon fiber service (if and when).

No offense to anyone else's viewing habits, but I can't believe Comcast would think more viewers want to see golf, HGTV and National Geo in HD rather than CW, FX, and SciFi!!!

I agree. I would much rather have FX and SciFi over the announced stations. I will probably watch NG, but not the others. They could throw in FoodTV. :)
talkingtiki 01-26-07, 01:56 PM dsmith, why would you want CW in HD?
For me it would for Smallville. The feed we currently get from comcast sucks with audio and signal drops during the show. I don't think SCIFi has any HD programming right now, but I could be wrong.
Texadillo 01-26-07, 01:59 PM I don't think SCIFi has any HD programming right now, but I could be wrong.
SciFi has announced that they will begin broadcasting in HD sometime this year.
dsmith901 01-26-07, 03:35 PM I watch Smallville and Veronica Mars on CW. I used to watch Supernatural but lost interest in it, but I would probably start watching again if it was HD. Some of the best and may favorite TV shows were on the old WB channel: Buffy, La Femme Nikita, Roswell, Angel, Firefly, Dark Angel (I think it was WB) to name a few. Only Smallville and VM meet that level now, but one can always hope for more. WTLHFOXPRO has apparently done something to slightly improve CW quality, but it still sucks compared to other network channels. Right now it is bottom of the barrel of any channel on Comcat in Tallahasse, and that is saying it is pretty damn sorry.
dsmith901 01-26-07, 03:37 PM SciFi has announced that they will begin broadcasting in HD sometime this year.
USA and FX networks are also supposed to go HD nationally very soon. So why isn't Comcast adding any of them in HD instead of the HGTV or golf channel? My guess it is the money.

The quality is less on the HDTV compared to other analog channels, but on my old 30"CRT it is actually one of the better channels as far as picture quality.

It boggles the mind that Comcast is wasting precious bandwidth on this (mostly) crap instead of giving us what we want in HD: SciFi, FX, and CW!
FSN is FOX Sports Network, not Florida Sports Network. Anyone know what Universal HD and Versus HD will show (garbage is my guess). The new MHD (Music HD) would be great except they show mainly the worst music groups on the planet, at least none to my taste.

Versus is the old OLN. Tallahassee Comcast actually carried UHD while the Olympics were on. It seemed like a TNT clone. Movies, reruns of old series.

I am not familiar with "OLN." Who, what, the hell are they?
Alan Gordon 01-29-07, 03:35 PM Universal HD is mostly movies.
Actually, it's about 50% movies.
Universal HD has reruns of "Sons And Daughters", "Equalizer", "Northern Exposure", "Law & Order: SVU", "Surface", "Battlestar Galactica" (current series), "Conviction", "Complete Savages", "Monk", "Quantum Leap", "Knight Rider", "Firefly", and "Stargate Atlantis".
While a lot of people make fun of the channel, it's actually very decent if you like movies and some of the above series.
The movies are also uncut, and commercial free.

One difference being that the majority of TNT-HD's programming is stretched upconverted SD, while UHD is 100% HD (with the exception of some of the commercials).

Either way, I would guess that we shall see an event in HD almost every night during teh summer and many nights in the winter.

Sci-Fi and FX will be launching HD channels later this year, and DirecTV has already agreed to carry them... as well as A&E, Bravo, Cartoon Network, CNN, Food Network, FX, HGTV, MTV, National Geographic, NFL Network, Speed, TBS, The History Channel, The Weather Channel, and USA Network as HD channels.
Comcast looks like they intend to add a BUNCH of HD channels later this Summer/Fall according to this article (http://www.tvpredictions.com/comcastkiller012507.htm)... of course, this is bad news for those who get their HD from Comcast via CableCard or a TiVo Series 3.

How come this is bad for CableCard or TiVo Series 3 owners? Is the article saying you need to switch to the channel on the Comcast cable guide to get the specified HD channel? How would this work with Comcast's DVR then? Hmmm...I know nothing of this technology. I do like hearing more HD channels might be available though. Thanks for the info Alan!

Switched Broadcasting requires Two-Way communication from your TV to the Cable company... something that the current type of CableCard does not do.
Since TiVo Series 3 uses CableCards to receive encrypted digital channels, it means that the unit cannot receive the Switched Digital channels.
Comcast's own DVR is fine however as it uses two way communications...

Versus (the former OLN) is wholly owned by Comcast, which may explain why I have seen the Philadelphia Flyers (also owned by Comcast!) on that channel quite a few times.

cdc3101 02-04-07, 11:20 PM I am new to HDTV, however I have purchased a phillips indoor antenna and am able to receive WCTV (HDTV) in perfect clarity and WTLH (HDTV) also is very clear. I even receive some other digital channels that are secondary channels (WFSU, DTV, etc). However, I cannot receive any signal from WTWC and was wondering if it is me or them? I read that ABC is still moving so I understand not receiving that channel, but I could not find any information regarding NBC. Any assistance would be helpful as I don't know if I need another/different antenna or whether this is something related to the local channel.

A discussion on Satellite Guys may be helpful - http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/archive/index.php/t-290249.html . This discussion mentions joiners and gives a link to an online merchant with a good selection.
I was in a similar situation with 2 antennas (due to Channel 40). I was going to combine them, but putting the UHF-predominant antenna (RS 15-2187) outside seemed to work well.

cdc3101 02-04-07, 11:37 PM The antenna that I purchased is supposed to pull in both UHF and VHF signal. Do I just need to do more tweeking with the "rabbit ears" that are attached or do I need another antenna and use the joiner to receive both signals?
Email had sent.
I am not sure if they did anything but very few drop out (pixelation) during the game.
I am attempting to try this item (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103094&cp=&sr=1&origkw=15-2507&kw=15-2507&parentPage=search) (just for the FM trap) but none of the Rat-Shack in town has it.
Anyone knows if that would really help ? Just try to be sure before plunging down money for web order.
Signal level drops from 80+ down to zero constantly and only happens to WCTV. I had the antenna for 6 mos and the first four months it was flawless. Just past month + the issue came around.
PBSengineer 02-05-07, 02:26 PM Might make matters worse. You can have too much signal and that in itself will cause problems.
WCTV may be having problems -- others have mentioned drop outs like you describe. Comcast 233 seems to be stable, but I think they get that via fiber directly from WCTV.
Do wish they had DD5.1 - would have liked to have seen the super bowl with that. It was impressive in HD.

I know. I was suggested to use: a Variable RF atennuator and an FM trap.
Well, those items are nowhere to be found with local stores.
That's the only closest thing that I can find (but they don't have it in stock either).

Have you tried Fouraker Electronics on Appleyard? If not it might be worth a call to see if they have what you need.

I would try the RF attenuator but would not worry much about the FM trap unless you live close to an FM station as you are not picking up 6 but 46. Also check all of your antenna connections especially the ones out side. Also what type of cable are you using. Some brands don't hold up to weather/water too well.

I am using RG-6 or something like that. It was a line that DirecTV guy installed for the carppy D* antenna. I went and replaced it with CM 3016. The antenna is in the attic so weather or water should not be a factor. I have checked connections on all and all tighten.
BTW. The Electronic store does not have either item. :-(

Comcast pulls in our signals over the air, we do not currently have a direct fiber link to them.

dsmith901 02-05-07, 03:41 PM WTLHFOXHD,
Are you the one who was working on the CW channel? FYI, I recorded Farscape on my Replay DVR last week and PQ was excellent - by far the best I have seen on Comcast Ch. 6 (CW). But I believe Farscape is a syndicated show sourced locally (?). I have reached the conclusion that the problem is not with the CW to Comcast connection - it is with the CW network feeds to the local station. It looks to me that either CW is sending the local station a low quality analog signal (strange if true) or the equipment receiving it is so crappy it is messing things up. CW network shows like Smallville and Veronica Mars do look better than a month or so back, but still not to the quality of that recent Farscape episode. Can you explain why the Farscape program look so much better than the CW network shows? And is there anything you guys can do about it? BTW, even with Farscape, while the picture was very good that low level hum in the audio was still there. THAT may be in the Comcast connection (?).
hunter0008 02-05-07, 04:08 PM Any new word on when Comcast will have ABC in HD? Do we really have to wait a few months until the building is done? It sounds like it works OTA, so why can't Comcast run that version? It's gonna get very frustrating with Lost coming back on ABC real soon.
wdmoody 02-05-07, 05:51 PM They might but I did not see it in schedule yet.
I play it safe (though have not checked them yet) have both tivo (HR10-250 recording NY Fox) and computer (Media Cender) recording them.
If you are really need to, I could burn the computer one to DVD for you.
Sorry if I saw this too late. You can watch the episodes online at fox.com/24
cdc3101 02-05-07, 08:50 PM I am still wondering how to get NBC (40.1) OTA. I have a UHF/VHF antenna that picks up all the channels listed by antennaweb as being available that are both UHF and VHF except 40.1. It was suggested that I use a combiner, but was wondering if this was necessary since this antenna was to pick up both UHF and VHF signals.
Can anyone provide an idea as to what I need to do to pick up NBC in HD? I live on the east side of Tallahassee if that helps in providing some help.
Thanks in advance.

I live on the east side of Tallahassee (next to Park Avenue and Capital Circle East) and while I can get WTXL, WCTV, WTLH, and WFSU, I get no signal from WTWC either. Maybe it's something about where we are.
cdc3101 02-05-07, 09:27 PM You get WTXL in HD? I only get the non-digital version of that station. I currently can receive the following: WCTV-DT, WTLH-DT, WTLH-CW, ECTV, WFSU - D1, WTXL (non-digital), WTWC (non-digital), WTLH (non-digital), WCTV (non-digital).
However I can not pick up WTXL or WTWC in HD.

If you are reciving the digital versions of WTXL, would you mind to share your setup?
houselog442 02-05-07, 10:11 PM Hey, I noticed WTXL must have dropped some signal strength because it is much harder to get it. I can still get it but i had to adjust my silver sensor. I use the silver sensor with a small amp and use a signal combiner to hook that and a radio shack rabbit ears totally horizontal for WTWC.

I live near Tom Brown Park Just off Apalachee PKWY and I have a WineGard GS2000 amplified antenna. I am able to get WTXL, WTWC, WCTV and WTLH all with a strong signal. WTWC (40.1) always comes in good usually with a 95 + signal.

Are you trying to receive the station via your tv tuner or are you using the HR20-700? I live near valdosta and can receive 40-1 via my tv's tuner and via my H10 but have never had any luck getting it through my HR20-700. I have asked the same question on DBS Talk with no definitive answer. Other people are having the same problems with OTA HD channels via the HR20-700. Some get them all, some get none and some get all but one or two. I think it is a software issue with the HR20-700 and multipathing or mpeg conversions.

I called Mike Plummer today and he said it will likely be the end of May before master control can be working locally and HD will be back on Comcast. Bummer!

BadMojo11 02-06-07, 04:24 PM Last night I was watching HD Hockey on the "VS" channel which appeared on Channel 405.
FSN HD was on 401 but there was no programming on it.....
The Music channels were moved into the 800 range...

Did you purchase this antenna here in Tallahassee or from an online dealer? I am trying to stay local if at all possible since nothing seems to be working yet.
Also, is this an indoor or outdoor antenna?

I got it here from Westview Satellite when they installed my Dish HD. It's outside mounted on the mast of my Dish.

I live in the northeast section of Tallahassee (near Bradfordville Road).
First, move the antenna around the house with various placements of the rabbit ears. (I think that I read that this is an indoor antenna). This may make a difference with the weaker signals. Before I moved my antenna (RS 15-2187) outdoors, I moved it to many spots around the room. I finally found a temporary spot that worked fairly well and that was somewhat acceptible to my wife. The weakest channel was channel 40 secondary to the VHF HD signal.
When I moved the antenna outside, it picked up Tallahassee HD signals (Channels 6-1, 6-2, 11-1 to 11-4, 27-1, 27-2, 40,-1, 40-2, 49-1, 49-2) without difficulty. I also got analog channels 14 and 45. The anntenna is very directional. After studying antennaweb.com and other sources (HDTV magazine), I pointed the antenna towards the Metcalf towers near the GA-FL border. This worked as well for WFSU, which is 180-degrees away from most of the other channels. If the antenna is pointed in other directions, many of the channels are not received.
It was also important for us that the antenna was amplified. The prior antenna was a non-amplified Winegard GS-1100. It couldn't pick up the WFSU signals. This amplified antenna (RS 15-2187) was able to pick up WFSU and the other HD channels.
The problem with this setup is that there is only one cable from the satellite antenna to the receiver inside. The prior installation had combined the OTA signal with the satellite signal from a Phase III dish. The outside splitter/combiner did not pass dc signal to the OTA antenna. When I used another combiner that did pass dc signal, I got interference with the local channels on the satellite. It is clear that we will have to have a separate cable run for the OTA (outside or attic). We are going to upgrade to a new dish and HR20 in the near future. Additional satellite (2 needed) and OTA lines will have to be fished through the living room wall from the attic. (I may try to fish these lines myself.)
In my effort to get a system that could pick up HD signals, I attempted to pick up more distant stations. I found out that I really couldn't get any more HD or analog channels. Some of the Dothan, AL and Panama City analog stations were barely received (with snow) when the antenna was pointed in those directions. I sometimes could pick up the Waycross, GA PBS station (analog) and a Columbus, GA channel. Tallahassee is unfortunately not very close to other cities! I would be interested in knowing if anyone is able to pick up other watchable distant signals (including Jacksonville, Gainesville, Albany, or Macon/Perry).
Good luck in your efforts to pick up all of the Tallahassee HD signals.
salvatorep 02-07-07, 07:11 AM Sorry, what is a HR20-700? I am using an OTA uhf/vhf antenna made by phillips. The HR20 is the DirecTV HD DVR.
sbturner 02-07-07, 08:03 PM WTLHFOX, any update on the OTA-622 issues? Thanks.
I have found a work around for the problem. I am using three 10dB attenuators stacked between the antenna and receiver. That would make 30dB. I got those from Dish with various recievers over the years, 721, 522, and 622. I usually get WTLH at about 85-90, with the 30dB attenuator it takes the signal down to 58-64. That's enough to fix the problem. If you can get the signal into the mid 70's it might do the trick. It will also reduce all your signals but luckily I didn't lose any with this solution. This is a temporary fix until WFXL in Albany goes online this summer. I can't understand why we are having this problem but it does not look like it will be resolved with WTLH. It will probably depend on how close to the towers you are as regards to how strong your attenuator should be. If you are too close it may not work.
Trek2000 02-07-07, 08:53 PM I watched Bones for a few minuets over my Dish 622 I got a couple minor breakups and one short dropout in about 15 minutes. Before I was getting two to three major breakups per minute. Maybe it's not perfect yet but it's a lot better than it was, at least for now.
I periodically check WTLH on my 622. It is rare any more that I can even get a signal for a few seconds. Maybe I'll look into the attenuators though when I do get a signal it is in the mid 70s already. All of the others are rock solid for me.
C'mon WTLHFOXHD, what's up?
cdc3101 02-08-07, 10:18 AM Thanks UNC8185 for the great information. I currently have dish network so I might be able to get something connected to my dish when I upgrade to the HD package. Do the satellite installers help out with any of this installation of the outside antennas or is this strictly DIY?
rrmcdonald 02-08-07, 01:10 PM I'll try the attenuator, as well, I guess, for my 622. I currently get Fox in the 90s from Summerbrooke in north Tally with a CM 3016 mounted in my attic (get ABC, NBC and CBS in the 90s, as well).

CapeFish 02-10-07, 05:01 PM I don't know if this might have an answer yet, but Lincoln Financial/Raycom Sports is going to offer the ACC Tournament to its stations in HD: http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/sports/colleges/16664153.htm
Is WTLH, the ACC rightsholder here in Tally, equipped (or going to be equipped) to show us these games in HD?
