I have the HDTV Wonder card, it DOES do HD.

It does play back and record over the air 1080I broadcasts.

So what is the differance between OTA HD and Cable HD?

And what is cox cable doing to block my HD Cable ready TV (without a Cable Card) and the ATI Card from viewing the Digital channels on the cable??

Rich

Premium channels are encrypted. In my area the local HD channels available over cable are unencrypted so that an HDTV with tuner can receive those channels and some other unencrypted content if you do a full scan of all digital channels with the tv without a cable card. Cable Card is required to authorize encrypted digital channels. The ATI tuner only scans for over the air HD broadcast channels. It does not have a QAM Digital tuner like the tv capable of scanning all channels on cable.

I have the HDTV Wonder card, it DOES do HD.

It does play back and record over the air 1080I broadcasts.

The ATI HDTV Wonder card does NOT play back or record anything. It receives a signal from your antenna, demultiplexes the transport stream out of the broadcast, and passes it on to software which can then write the raw, unprocessed transport stream to disk, transform it to another format (MPEG-2 program stream, DIVX, etc.) and write it to disk, and/or display it using software decoders and your PC's video card. For playback of previously recorded shows, the HDTV Wonder is not used - that's the distinction from the hardware decoder cards such as accessDTV and MyHD. If you look at my signature, you might be convinced that I actually know what I'm talking about here :). For reference, I own 7 accessDTV cards and 2 ATI HDTV Wonder cards and I volunteer software development time to enhance the accessDTV software and have been for the last several years.

So what is the differance between OTA HD and Cable HD?

Different broadcast formats - 8-VSB for OTA and QAM for cable.

And what is cox cable doing to block my HD Cable ready TV (without a Cable Card) and the ATI Card from viewing the Digital channels on the cable??

Well, there are 2 key things here. First off, even if the ATI HDTV Wonder hardware supports QAM reception (this is up for debate), the current drivers don't make this functionality available, AFAIK. Next, even if you don't have a cable card box, the signal can still be encrypted such that you need the cable box to decrypt it.

OK I when to a TV friendly Firewire DVR, the Toshiba 160HD4.

Two questions:

Any one know what to format a drive with so it will run in this box, and if so will it run a second drive for more space.

And two can I capture and record the output durning playback on the second firewire port on a PC?

My hope is either I can add and remove and thus store probrams and movies on a hard drive for the time being.

And that I might be able to copy onto my computer for frame capture and play back on my front projector and it seems this will only happen from the computer.

Other wise I am forced to watch these recordings only the Mitsubishi.

Ok... I'm having a slight problem. I'm using a DCT6412 III and it connects fine to my computer. I use capdvhs to capture video. It seems to work fine on channels that are below 100. Above 100 and nothing is populated under the "DATA" tab. The file that capdvhs builds grows in size the longer I record, but is unplayable on VLC and Media Player Classic. I've checked some of the channels above 100 for 5c and all return a value of "0" according to my cable box. Anyone have any ideas here? Oh yes, I'm on Comcast Cable in Montgomery County, Maryland.

THANKS!

Just wanted to post this in case it may help someone with the: "Cannot find SampleGrabber" error

I just started getting it after a system crash and windows Chkdsk.

This may or may not be your problem but mine was related to a directX problem,
So if you get this problem just go to start run and type dxdiag and then look under directx files to see if there are any problems.

most significantly look for qedit.dll but there may be others marked as a problem as well.

I just replaced that one file in my windows system32 folder and no more SampleGrabber problem! Somehow it got corrupted during a crash and windows Chkdsk and I needed a replacement.

So always check your directx to see if you have a dll problem.

I'm switching from Comcast to Fios and want do do the firewire connection to my HTPC. The Comcast STBis a Motorola 6412 and the Verizon STB is the 6416. I hooked up the 6412 and by following the instructions in this thread, have been able to capture both SD and HD programming so I know the firewire and CapDVHS work just fine. When connecting to the 6416, I get the "no capture device found" when I start CapDVHS. I don't have the yellow exclaimation point on the driver (I'm using the Morotola AV/C device (DCT-6412) driver) when connected to the 6416, but still get the error on CapDVHS. Any ideas?

I haven't disconnected the Comcast yet, I want to make sure the FIOS is working before disconnecting, so I have both and can do a stare and compare.

Problem solved. My 6416 developed the "automatic system saver" mode. you know the one where it turns itself off several times a day. Verizon came out in record time, scheduled on Monday, showed up on Sunday about noon, and replaced the STB. Went through setup again and this time it works perfectly. Samsung 61" DLP looks great with captured HiDef through firewire. Now if we can only figure out a way to capture 5c=1 programming, I'll be all set!

My thanks to the people who have documented so much on this forum.

Anyone else have a problem when upgrading from a 6412 to 6412 III box that you get "no capture device found" in CapDVHS? It work fine with the original 6412, but went I plugged in my new 6412 III, I get that error?

I haven't tried reinstalling the drivers yet, just wondering if there was a simple fix.

Hi all, my Comcast 6200 has simply refused to pass video over 1394 to either my PowerBook or XP systems. I am running firmware 8.14. I've actually started a new thread about this specific issue here:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=639349

I'd appreciate feedback from anyone who has a 6200 and 1394 recording (that either works or does not work) in that thread. Thanks!

Im having trouble getting my DCT-6412 working in MCE. I have installed the drivers and they seem to function correctly. I can change channels through the cmd prompt and CapDVHS is working fine. I made sure that the checkbox was enabled in the mytray.exe for enabling firewire/usb recording. When I open up Media Center and try to use the TV function it says that there is no tuner found. Any help would be appreciated...

Does it show up in the STB App.(under More Programs) in media center?

note-You do still have to have a video source feeding into the tuner in your computer

Yes.

The following is from the creators thread at:

http://www.thegreenbutton.com/community/shwmessage.aspx?ForumID=26&MessageID=104152

This package (firewire.zip) supports channel change and recording (SD/HD) via firewire, integrated into MCE. Channel change only works with the Motorola 6200/6208/6412 STBs and the SA3250HD/SA8000/SA8300HD STBs, recording works with other STBs.

It supports 1 or 2 STBs/tuners.

It supports extenders, though HD records will not play back on extenders

It doesn't remove the MCE requirement for the IR blaster and analogue tuners.

The readme.htm attached goes into more details of what is required to set it up and includes a FAQ

A reinstall of the drivers using the instructions provided here: http://replayguide.sourceforge.net/dct6412/

resolved my "no capture device problem. These seem to have updated drivers than the drivers I had installed originally.

I'm also having fast forward problems after captureing via firewire. FF acts a slow motion vs FF. Only solutions is to unplog box and wait, and wait, and wait for guide and even menu options to come back such "DVR" Any one else seen this before? This is on a new phase III, Firmware 12.20

This is an ongoing issue that I had first brought up, as far as I know nobody has found a solution. Well somebody posted that they could resolve the issue by switching tuners. It doesn't work for me but you can give it a try.

I have the hardware installed, but when I try to record I get an error about not being able to start samplegrabber (or something similar) and my other program of choice tells me that the video device is already in use, or that there is no tape in my DV device; please put a tape in the camera...

Any help on resolving this would be appreciated.

OK guys...major problems here.

I have a SA HD 8300 with PVR.

I hooked it up via firewire. clicked cancel for the unknown and installed the drivers for the other two. then disabled the unknown.

Here's where the problems come in.

If I click "mytray," absolutely nothing happens.

If I click the command prompts and whatknot, I get something similar to what is outlined in the "read" file but it says "no device selected" when i do the channel -v command.

If i try and record in HD through the program, it crashes.

The box also freezes every time I try and record or even have it plugged into my pc.

what firmware are you on? are you getting any particular errors with CapDVHS?
Do you know the value of 5c on channels?

can you post the output from

as time goes by it is becoming less and less likely that this will work do to new methods of protecting the content until windows DRM recognizes 5c and dtcp and such.

After you install the msi, all you should have to do is go into device manager and "update" the driver. Windows should find the new driver automatically.

Hello bdraw and everyone,

I'm tearing my hair out (figuratively, since my head is bald already).

I just got a brand new DCT 3412 from Comcast (it took 3 of them before finding a good one).
Anyway, I can't get XP to see it as anything beyond a 61883 Class Bus Device (that won't start).

I've tried everything I've read on this entire forum regarding FireWire, XP, and STB DVR's. I've done everything right,
but the box isn't showing XP anything A/V related for devices.

Can someone verify that Comcast has not shut off the functionality of the 1394 ports?
Or tell me what I can try to get the box to show XP the A/V devices so that I can
load the Panasonic drivers and get a move on over here?

I'm in meteo-west Massachusetts and have one of the first batch of 3412's to hit the area.

Thanks,

CouchPotato

Sounds to me like the ports are not active. For whatever reason some cable companies don't enable the ports on most of thire boxes. Here in Tampa BHN only enables the 1394 port on one box even though most of their HD boxes they give out now have the ports.

I think what you mean to say is that the devices on the port are disabled, not the port itself, because I can see the unit, just not as any A/V device. simply a 61883 Class Bus Device.

If that's what you mean, I'd tend to agree.

Also, I want to end the rumour that the 3412 doesn't support analog broadcast.

It sure the hell does! And displaying those channels on a Toshiba 56MX195 really shows their flaws.

Looking at the 77 pages in this thread that started a year and a half ago...how much of the info has changed over the months from when this thread started. I have started going through the replies, but it is a very slow process. Any help with getting my recorded programs off the DVR and onto my PC would be appreciated. I have a Comcast/Motorola 3412 in Atlanta. I can record all the HD over the air channels over firewire to windows XP, except the NBC affiliate (806 WXIA). Looking through the 3412's diagnostic screen (d6) I see that this channel has CCI=2, while all the others have CCI=0.

Reading through the DTCP spec, CCI=2 seems to mean copy once, while CCI=0 is copy freely.

Further reading of the spec shows that for "copy once" the destination device must do a restricted authentication key exchange with the sender . This is not necessary for copy freely.

My guess is that the XP driver is not capable of authenticating itself to the DVR and thus no transfer on this channel. I also presume that a real CE device like a TV monitor with a firewire input, or a real DVHS deck could authenticate itself and would be able to do the transfer.

Do I have this right?

One mystery is that until recently I had a Motorola 6412 (phase 2) that had no trouble with this channel. If failed and got swapped out for the 3412. It's not clear to me which box is getting it wrong, and if Comcast is purposely sending CCI=2.

Just as a hint, put whatever you're using for viewing or recording (VideoLAN, CAPDVHS, etc.) into real-time mode. I do this and it greatly improves the frame rate. I have a bad graphics card and have to do this. Others may not but it won't hurt. Just so you know, real-time mode will basically freeze your computer in many cases. If you don't want that, I'd suggest putting it High mode.

How-To Change Processor Priority:
1. Ctrl-Alt-Delete
2. Go to "Applications" and right click on the program.
3. Select "Go to Process"
4. Right click the Application's Process and highlight "Set Priority"
5. Select "AboveNormal", "High", or "Real-time" depending on how much of a boost you want

Sorry Ben, I didn't mean to knock your thorough guide, I just wanted to help out the 6412 owner. I also thought that including the link in your guide may be of some help to the many 6412 users on this thread, I just didn't phrase it right.

Wow timecop, I always wondered what happend to you, good to have you back.

Here in Tampa they encrypt everything except the OTA channels. The tuner subunit is definitly there and can be used to change the channels. If you haven't see it already check out the link to the new drivers on the main page. They work great no more need to force XP to use the drivers. The packages even includes the program to change the channels and integrate with MCE.

I tried it out but wasn't much use since I could already record all the channels OTA.

After experimenting with a number of variations and applications, I've found using HDTV2MPEG to do basic editing and converting to .mpg and then using Nero Vision to author my DVDs works very well in most instances and is simpler than the DGInex.exe, QuEnc.exe or CCE routine.

I end up with a DVD that has nice menus, and looks nice as well as having 5.1 surround.

HDTV2DVD is a very nice, if very stripped down, app for this as well. I've thought of getting a copy of his SVCD2DVD to compare it with Nero but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I had to spend a month or so working with my cable provider but I can access most programming they provide for this process.

For now anyway...

Huhu, yeah. I've looked at that package. Looks like the "original" drivers with a better catch-all inf for all the u.s. based fw devices and some new stuff.

Interesting how all the "channel changing" stuff is based on AV/C Panel, there aren't any devices with Panel here that I can play with :(

And too bad about encryption but I think thats where things are headed in general.

Capdvhs just didn't work for me however I discovered an alternative method using
Microsoft's GraphEdit. I am able to record the stream using the nvidia purevideo package.I find that I get artifacting on some of the ota local HD streams.I have an
ATI x300(bottom of the line)-Is it possible that this graphics card has a hard time processing the transport streams. If so which card should I get that will do an excellent job without breaking the bank.It sucks when you're watching a very sharp approx. 17.5 Mbps stream and all of a sudden you get some noisy artifacting-just destroys the whole experience.

Hello all,

This is my first post. I tried to include links, but the forums would not let me.

I have just started trying to get Firewire to work from my (Motorola DCT3412 I) and have had nothing but issues. I have Comcast as my cable company, and they directed me to this forum to be able to access this device. They also tole me that the 3412 and the 6412 use the same firmware.

I have followed the instructions (Green Button Community MSG 104152), followed by the multitude of instructions for fixing the SP2 issue with 1394. It does not make a difference if I use the SP1 files or install the MS patch (both from AVS Forums MSG 5315313)

All roads lead to windows reporting:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Does anyone have any clues?

I have a VIAŽ 6307 IEEE 1394 controller. All patches for XP are installed. All known driver are the latest and ?greatest?.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

We must working on this at the same time. I am having the exact same experience. I just called TWC here in Houston and the rep assured me that these ports should be active after consulting with others. The only advice he had was to return and swap the box but I am not convinced that is the real issue.

The only difference I see between your setup and mine is my SARA is 1.87.16.a104. That even seems we are very close.
Refer back to 1/14/06. My SARA firmware was 1.87.16.1. Now it's 1.87.27.1 and I've noticed that my PC recognizes the SA8300HD and installs the Tuner and Panel drivers. Still working to get everything working, but this is a step in the right direction. Has your situation improved? - Rod

I have a problem now recording from my 6412 with CAPDVHS, computer reboots after recording for a few seconds and the error says something like driver IRQ conflict when I checked it out.

I tried uninstalling the drivers and used the newest drivers for the 6412 (not the old Panasonic one) and it will now record but the picture stutters and pixelates every few seconds. All this started happening after the power went out and the 6412 rebooted.

I can record from my 6200 just fine with the old drivers or the new ones. I also tried on my laptop and it does the same thing stutters and pixelates recording form the 6412 with the new drivers and dumps with Panasonic ones, but the laptop also works with my 6200 with either drivers.

This is strange since I have been recording from the 6412 for almost a year, and just recorded a few weeks ago.

If anyone has had the stuttering and pixelation problem and solved it let me know, I thought it might be a driver or direct x problem since I just did a system restore, but the laptop does the same thing with the 6412.

The "newest" drivers are the same old panasonic drivers with new infs adjusted to directly install with DCT + etc STBs. So they are in fact the same drivers. The reboot/bluescreen is caused by ****** coding in the streaming portion of the driver, and *only* happens under certain bad circumstances (such as using the driver directly from graphedit in certain order of things).

The pixelation should have nothing to do with the driver or pc, if you "didn't change anything" then your 6412 downloaded some new firmware that screwed up the output.

I've had a Mot 6412 for over a year now but when I finally got around to trying to archive a show I failed to get past what would seem to be the first step.

The main symptom: When I connect my 6412 to my PC using a firewire cable I do NOT get any "Found new hardware wizard." It's almost as if the 6412 is not sending out any signal over Firewire. I tried this both before and after downloading and installing the various software and drivers listed in the guide. I've not yet seen the "Found new hardware wizard" show up when I connect to the 6412.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Thanks in advance for any help.

Comcast has been forcably updating their boxes lately and have caused my computer to hard crash when they did them, and in the process screwed up the use of my firewire ports, the only way I've been able to get them to work again was to hard reset the stupid box, but I ended up losing all the PVR's I had recorded in the process. You'll have to also remove the firewire connection first from the computer and STB. If you haven't already backed up all your PVR's and can't access the box to save them prior to a hard reset, then plan on losing them, to get your firewire working again. Otherwise, if your not worried about the PVR's then just call them up and request a "hard complete reset" of your box and they will walk you through it. It requires unplugging the box and the cable connection to do it, but I can't remember all the steps, maybe someone else can inform of them.

Thanks Trucker! While I'd like to try to archive the shows I currently have recorded, it won't be the end of the world to lose them. I'll try calling up and getting a "hard complete reset". I'll report back on my success or failure in the next few days.

Edit: So far no luck performing reset. Comcast tech seemed oblivious to what a reset was. He did an "init" which didn't delete my saved programs. I tried a reset manually which I read about online, the so-called HDD reset. Still no luck so far. I'll update if/when my luck changes.

Unfortunately, everything on Verizon FIOS is 5C except locals! :(Your sig listed a TV that has a QAM tuner. Have you tried hooking it directly to the FIOS cable, bypassing the Motorola STB? On traditional cable you can usually get the digital locals and sometimes other things, depending on what the cable company scrambles. I'd be interested to know what you get on FIOS.

Hmmm so they are exactly the same? just cosmetic changes on how they are installed. That makes it even more strange that new drivers work but the picture stutters, and the old drivers just flat out reboot any computer I use, so I'm getting different results with both drivers, thats odd.

I agree it's most likely my 6412 :( especially since it happened right after the power outages during that snow storm, either the ports got messed up when the power went out, or maybe the software got messed up when the power kept going off and on, especially since my 6200 still works just fine.

Sadly I have a boatload of old stuff I never got around to saving, The saving grace is most of it is SD so I can save it trhough S-Video and then do the hard reboot to see if that makes a difference.

Just really strange that the drivers have different behavior.

So your 6200 works fine using either set of drivers?
I briefly looked at the "new" package, the only thing changed vs the original setup was the inf file which included hardware IDs for all the common STBs to avoid "forcing" teh driver install.

You can try to manually add the MPEG2TS source filter in graphedit, right click on output pin, and "render", that MIGHT work, also dont try to show proppage for the filter, that will cause reboot/bluescreen. Anyway, If it works with another box I'd say whatever changed in 6412 is to blame.

BTW, the repair told me their were 2 audio track etcetera, which gave me hope. Do any of these video toold give you a track "scope view" so you could tell if there are video/audio levels that just aren't playing right.

Now my DVR won't respond... the channel changer works but the DVR functions show playing but the live channel just keeps showing.

Also, after a while the sound sometimes goes out on the DVR, I thought this was part of the recording problems, but maybe its just some funky ieee stuff. HELP.

It seems like alot of forums are talking about the MCE of windows.

channel.exe is a command for controlling the panel. this can be used without mce. instructions are in the readme of the firewire.zip or firewirebeta.zip

you can create windows shortcuts to channel.exe with the parameters for a particular channel and put them in a toolbar or folder. I have also used windows task scheduler to run channel changes between scheduled recordings in CapDVHS to automate the process.

Very new to this stuff. I was able to get my PC to recongnize my STB (Sony from Cablevision) and even got it to record after fiddling around with it. My concern is playback. Very jerky. However, my goal was not to use the PC for playback, but as sort of a video "holding tank", where I would be able to offload movies from DVHS tape to the PC and then record them back to tape when needed.

I was able to capture Sin City on my PC from playing back a tape on my Mitsubishi 2000U, my question is whether there is a way to playback the PC file of Sin City and record it back to tape via the Mitusbishi at a later time? Will any playback software automatically output the stream via firewire? Is there a trick to make the Mitsubishi see the PC as an iLink device? Will it only see it when there is a video stream going?

Ok I am having problems getting the recording in MCE to work. I have a Motorola DCT 6200, connected to my Media Center PC via firewire as well as into my Hauppauge PC150 Tuner card. Recording via CapDVHS works perfectly fine for all channels. I have set the "Firewire/USB Tray" program that sits in the system tray to "Enable Firewire/USB Recording" and it detected my STB fine. I also have the program appear in "More Programs" in Media Center and everything appears to be setup fine. I have it set to "Do nothing with MCE" so there should be the 2 files recorded (one through the tuner card and one through firewire), but still whenever I go to record something it only records the much lower quality signal through the tuner card.

On a side note, I also have the Live TV option checked in the More Programs settings, is there any way to get this to work either?

Thanks for any help!

You didn't provide enough information about your setup, could be anything from poor MPEG2 decoder filters or bad quality component/VGA out on your video card. Checking around HTPC forum on this site might not be a bad idea since your problem is with playback, not with recording.

There may be some processing you want to do on the file before archiving back to tape (e.g. mpeg2repair and TStoATSC or TStoATSC3). You can also try VideoReDo's Quick Stream Fix but VRD is $49 the other programs are free. I have found some captures are so glitched nothing will fix them so you need to recapture a few times before you get something that is viewable, particularily anything from Showtime which is a glitch fest.

Hello all,

I'm having the same problem with the device showing up in the device manager as being unable to start. I'm also concerned about a firewall message I got around the time I installed the driver.

I'm using a Dell XPS M140 with Windows XP Media Center Edition. Has anyone managed to get this working with a Comcast/Motorola DCT3412 I?

got the vid capture working using the capdvhs, displayed very easily and PERFECTLY on the VLC...really cool.

Okay....thought...incorrectly that the firewire would make the MOTOROLA 6412 Hare drive appear as another source, so I could grab an already saved item and bring it over to the laptop, and bun a dvd of my last 24, or CSI, etc...

Can someone help a dumb guy here? Please?

Does the tuner subunit on motorola boxes not support DSIT (0xC8) AV/C command, why is the panel subunit being used to change channels? Can someone in the know tell me about this?

What is it that you need help with? You say that you have video capture working properly and that you have already realized that the firewire is just the pipe to stream the video out of the 6412, not an interface to the box as external storage. All you can do, which you have already done, is to capture the streaming video coming out of the firewire port onto your computer as the 6412 plays back the show. Were you just looking for confirmation that you have done all you can?

If he plays back the previously recorded content, will it then be "streaming" the video out the pipe, and then be capturable for him? Essentially a dub procedure?

Yes. There are two tuners to record two shows at once, but the box can only playback/decode one show at once. The 6412 can output that video stream through the various analog ports and/or the firewire port. While it is streaming the show over the firewire port, you can capture the output on your computer much as you would capture the composite video output with your VCR.

I found this in the readme of firewire.zip but I really don't know the details

"The AV/C Panel device seems to be an emulation of the front panel of the STB and so accepts the channel change commands. The firewire tuner device does not support change channel commands and using the –f parameter with channel.exe to force the firewire tuner device to be used will blue screen the machine."

who is the author of the hacks in this firewire.zip and where can they be found?

Has anyone implemented these firewire connections on Cox systems (DVR or nonDVR) in Tulsa, Oklahoma? I currently get my HD from E* but am considering returning to cable. If I could connect my HP MCE to the STB, that would sway me to return. Thanks...

I've been able to record using graphedit however there has always been artifacting and dropouts on abc and pbs and UHD.Capdvhs always "encountered an error" when I ran it for more than a minute.INHD and ESPNHD were encrypted so even though I could record, the stream was not watchable with all that interference.I've been experimenting with MAC OS X for Intel and lo and behold with Apple's firewire development kit not only can I finally record the ota HD channels with absolutely no drop outs or artifacting(perfect stream) but I thank God for my 150 I.Q. - I am now able to record INHD and ESPNHD perfectly(5c encryption just disappeared when interfacing with the cable box through Mac OS X.I would just like to thank Steve Jobs,Mom, and none of you at this forum.

As much as I'd like to believe that, its just not technically possible.

what do you want as proof-I can uplaod a sample clip recorded through windows that has interference and another clip recorded through mac that is a perfect stream.Give me an ftp link and I'll show you.

5C is not interference. 5C is black screen.
If you can record them now, it simply means your local cable co hasn't figured out how to turn the flag on all the premium channels. But it will happen sooner or later.

castellana

Actually 5C can either be a black screen or digital garbage.I called my provider and they said 5C was turned on for everything other than the local ota channels.

Cablevision hasn't been very good on their 5c encryption for years. Though they will tell you its not on, they seem to constantly keep turning it off.

Enjoy it while you can. It has nothing to do with a Mac.

This is conflicting with Nero 7/ Vision 4. Whenever I start vision 4, the BSODs.
If I go to device manage and disable Motorola 6412 Firewire AVC Device, Nero vision works fine. So, when Nero Vision starts, it tries to list and enumerate all capture devices and that somehow is conflicting with this Motorola cable tuner. The moment I enable it and start Nero Vision 4, the PC crashes again (BSOD).
Here is my crash dump analysis...any ideas?

Yes, its a known bug in the panasonic AVC drivers. It's a bug in the KS/Directshow portion of the driver, and since there is no source code, it can't be fixed.

Workaround 1: don't use nero vision
Workaround 2: tell nerovision to not enumerate this particular capture device (if possible)

Preferred workaround: #1

Any idea how to use Workaround 1 as I would really like to use Vision?

Well I just tried this newer method (new to me) and it works quite well. Thumbs up! Now my Tuner AVC Device is listed as a Moto DCT 6412 instead of the universal "Panasonic..." One note, playback in VLC didn't work for me right away, so I installed drivers for both "Tuner AVC Device" as well as "Tuner AVC Panel" and it everything worked fine then. All drivers were installed automatically without problems (there is a reboot in there, and a few XP alerts as far as WHQL goes). Recording with CapDVHS is a breeze and it lists the device as "Motorola AVC Tuner Device."

This is truly a great thread! Thanks!

What is listed in your device manager under "imaging devices?" There should be two devices listed, try right clicking on each one and "update driver." After clicking no to seach online for drivers, let the driver install automatically for each device. Hope that helps.

Also, when I first plugged the firewire in, I only cancelled the first "found new hardware."

I can caputure fine with the 6416, same as the 6412 I used to have. After a capture, the FW/RW buttons may not work. A reboot on the Motorola box fixes that. I had that problem since the 12.27 firmware upgrade in Jan 06, and on both the 6412, and the 6416, so it's not specific to the 6416.

when i plug my 3250HD into my TV via Firewire, guide and info are not supported, along with all the HD channels

however i know the firewire on the TV supports HD, because it works great with my brothers mac plugged into it

i was guessing the 3250hd did not have 1080i output through firewire, i guess i was wrong?

Ill try this out though

I think it is something digeo has done to protect the content.

You can capture the video (either live or a recording being played back) in real-time by recording the digital stream over firewire. You cannot access the DCT6412's storage system as though it was an external hard drive hooked up to your PC.

Hello
Sorry for the long post. I searched this thread but haven’t been able to find any solutions to my problem and I am getting furious. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have been recording from my Motorola 6412 for about a month now, problem-free.

Just recently, I have lost the ability to view and record from my cable box, and I don’t know why. This change did not coincide with any other computer issues.

When I open CapDVHS, everything is as normal except that when I press record, no file information comes up in the boxes. I know it is recording something, because the timer moves and it creates a file of normal size (~1.5 GB for a half hour show), but none of my programs will open it (VLC, Womble)

Similarly, when I open VLC to view live cable, I select the source as normal, but nothing comes up. The play button switches to a pause, but I get no audio/video.

After the problems started, I went to my dad’s house (same Motorola 6412). When I plugged into his box, I was prompted to install the drivers again, same as it did the very first time I installed them. I went through the process and successfully viewed and recorded as normal. When I went home and tried it on my box, it worked, but only temporarily and I eventually lost the functionality again.

The computer recognizes the cable box when I plug it in and the device manager still shows the drivers under imaging devices when I have the box plugged into the computer. When I plug the cable box into the computer while the cable box is off, the cable box will power up, so I assume the cable box recognizes the output connection.

Also, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, and both capdvhs and vclan, but nothing has worked. I even downgraded to service pack 1, just to try something. Nothing has worked

Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

You got 5C'd it sounds like...:(

5C is a flag that can be set on content that will not allow recording of the material if the recording box does not respond that it is acknowledging the 5C flag.

Suma4
03-16-06, 03:19 PM
when I go to the diagnostic screen, 5C shows a 0
Even if it was 5C'd, couldn't I still watch, just not record?

UPdate: Turns out they turned on 5C and de-activated all of my firewire ports. Thanks comcast.

Naylia
03-16-06, 03:31 PM
well then maybe it's not 5C....5C does prevent you from watching (watching/recording are virtually the same to the pc)

you could try taking the box into one of the cable co's offices and tell them it's acting weird and ask them to swap it for you...dont' try that over the phone because they'll send a guy out, he'll just test your picture and they'll probably charge you for a service call. But you should be able to walk in with it and swap the box pretty easy if they have any on hand.

Suma4

thanks for the replies

I'll try swapping out the box.

If they did actually flag me, and its all over, at least I got about 25 "free" hours of simpsons and aqua teen on dvd now.

Hi:
If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. I spent all night trying to hook up my ieee included laptop to my comcast dual tuner dvr with firewire output. I followed the instructions, but when the panel and tuner software was installed it failed. I uninstalled and reinstalled several times. My DVR is Motorola's latest dual tuner hd DVR. The latest has hdmi out to connect to my flat panel's hdmi in. The firmware on my stb is in the 12's, 12.22 I believe. Am I just ahead of the software (drivers) so that my stb is too new for that listed in this post?
New to trying to capture digital to pc. They make it sound easy, just connect the firewire, run the movie maker and go. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case in using an stb to pc connection.
Video capture device not found in xp movie maker or the software listed here, downloaded and run.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Need a bit of help from the experts. I have succesfully captured video from my Motorola 6412 using CapDVHS. After capture, I play the .ts file in media player classic. All is fine. Both video and audio are perfect. I then open DGIndex, set audio and video PID's. When I play the file in DGIndex, I do not have any sound. DGIndex information box shows nothing in the audio format box and time stamp doesn't move when playing. Next step using HDTV to MPEG2 converter, I believe I'm doing all the steps right. I convert the .ts file to .mpg and then play the .mpg file in a number of media players and still no sound. Am I doing something wrong when setting the audio and video PID's? My PID's are usually 0x900 for video and 0x901 for audio. Thanks!

Also there will never be sound in dgindex. If you tell it to, it will demux audio to a separate ac3/mpg file.

One more thing. I usually use Vegas 6 to edit video. So far it's always been .avi files from my camcorder. When I dropped in the .mpg file, no sound just video. Any experience with this? I just want to edit out commercials. Thanks!

Ok, I just had DGIndex output a separate wave file. Dropped both the wave and mpg in vegas and edited both to remove commercials. Tried to edit using hdtv to mpeg2 earlier and I can''t get the cuts precise enough. Anyway. Additional editing thoughts appreciated.

Sorry if this was discussed before and I missed it, but I didn't find it with a search.

I've noticed a problem with hi-def captures (SD is ok) where the time seems to get out of sync after about 5 minutes. So when I try to play back a ts stream, I can't pause or fast forward at any point after the sync is lost when I play it using Elecard's media player or WMP (VideoLan works a little better).

Any recommendations?

If price is not an issue, Womble MPEG Video Wizard is a great tool which can cut TS directly, as well as demux into video/audio streams, if needed. I'm not aware of any free alternative to this program, because (unlike free/opensource software) it actually works very good. (http://www.womble.com/)

Advise you to dump Womble. It looses sync badly and outputs .ts streams that are technically "spec" but incompatiable with many players.

The author has ignored all requests to fix it for the last 18 months.

VideoRedo is the proven alternative right now.

Coulda fooled me.
womble stuff produces perfect video cuts with all sorts of mpeg material that I throw at it, both SD and HD, I've never had problems with sync, and I've used it numerous times for trimming ts caps from my HC1 camera, again without any sync issues. As far as "incompatible with many players", well, you must be using AMD.

Never had an AMD processor in my life.

Glad you have no sync issues with your HC1 camera.

Now, try and open your editted womble output in HDTVtoMpeg2 or any other numerous items and see how far your get.

Also run it through MPEG2Repair with all the verbose errors.

And when you get to real world of movies with AC3 Audio, you'll find out the hard way.

Again, lots of luck but for anyone that wants a frame accurate editor that gives you a proper output, womble isn't it.

See, you keep bringing up all these extra tools you have to use like hdtvtompeg2 (why do i need it at all?) and mpeg2repair (what? repair what?) but with womble you dont even need any of them. And I've used womble with ac3 (2ch), not on pirated but on my own created content, and I had zero problems, again.

I did download videoredo, just so that you don't think I'm a complete as.hole and gave it a try. Here's my quick review: timeline seeking is about 5x slower than in womble, the interface is horrendous, there are NO tools to demux TS or mux ES to PS/TS, it doesn't show which parts of the video will be reencoded due to cuts, the preview window is slow, each time I open some menu it flickers the screen... Oh, its half the price of womble, but has 1/10th of its features and 5x the slowness. no thanks!

Oh, and I just tried to exit it and it asked me "You have unsaved edits. Click 'Yes' to proceeed and lose your edits", with the "Yes" button selected by default, and no "cancel" choice. So not only does it have a nonsensical message, it selects the action which would create the most damage. If you notice, the proper way to do that dialog would be "You have unsaved edits. Do you want to save the changes? Yes/No/Cancel".

Has anyone else had this problem? :(

I posted a whlie back that I was unable to archive from my Mot 6412 and that the problem seemed to be that no signal was coming out of my firewire ports. I tried a few suggestions including power-cycling the machine, resetting the machine and trying both ports (though I think I read somewhere that the outer one is recommended over the inner). Still no luck --- when I connect to my PC (running XP Home SP2) the PC doesn't respond as if anything happened at all (no hardware wizard appears yet everyone else I've read on this thread indicates that a wizard appears for them at this point).

Any other ideas what I might try? Has anyone else had similar experiences? Thanks.

You know what, there you go making assumptions - "pirated content" that statement shows you know nothing about the law as I don't have pirated content under the laws of the United States.

If I want to cut the commercials out of Twister on TNT-HD for archieving and Womble screws up the capture, sync and otherwise.

Forget it - go buy Womble to your hearts content. When you find a player in a year or 2 that will not work with Womble - when you find out that things are out of sync - when you find out that Womble didn't save a 2 hour file like you thought, just remember, someone tried to help you out.

And its very simple the reason i bring up a bunch of FREE TOOLS. YOU COULD CHECK THE WOMBLE OUTPUT and see if it had errors or not.

But, you only read what you want - and do what you want.

Have a wonderful evening in fantasy land where everything is perfect.

I've processed hours and hours of MPEG2 content in it, both SD and HD. With zero issues with sync or errors or what have you. And I have yet to find a player which doesn't play .ts properly, I mean, I probably could, but I would have to go out of my way to do it, and as long as it plays in media player classic / vlc / graphedit(?) then why would I care?

Yesterday around 4pm EST after the stock market had closed, my CNBC screen froze. It remained that way until nearly 545pm as software was loaded onto my 3250HD cable box. After which Passport 3.3 Build 029 was in effect.

For home HD recorders out there, this latest build provides the following results.

BAD
1. Your DVI is no longer operational. You'll see a white line on the top right of your HDTV and the video image goes in and out.

GOOD
1. Your JVC HM-DH40000U D-VHS recorder is now back from the dead as this build allows for HD (whatever format) recording once again!

BAD
2. Yes to the HD recording but at the price of macro blocking with pixelization in the recorded HD video from time to time. The audio is also jumbled during the blocking so I suspect it't the 1394 data packet. I hope this will be fixed! John, Paul, ideas?

GOOD
2. The HD recording is now for EVERY HD channel!

BAD
3. Without the DVI, good luck on gettting 1920x1080 set on your 1920x1080 LCD or projector.

GOOD
3. There is a work around for the above, write me.

So far, this is what I have observed for this latest 029 build of passport 3.3

It's not a canned work around for all. I need to know what DVI devices you may have and then find ways to "pin" your DVI based panel to the 1920x1080 or 1280x720 setting.

The problems you are experiencing may not be the Motorola cable box but rather your Firewire controller card. There appears to be an issue with firewire cards that have the VIA chipset running on WinXP. Take a look at the following link and poke around the forum and you'll see what I mean.

the actual format is mpeg2ts it is not a standard mpeg and requires an mpeg2 demuxer as well as mpeg2 video decoder and digital audio decoder to play. I use HDTVtoMPEG2 to convert to mpeg I can then edit and burn. If one player is working and the other not they must be using different decoders or it is not demuxing.

Well I've tried HDTVtoMPEG2 and initially it doesn't recognize the files as TS, so I have to say all files for them to populate. It seems to convert fine but when I check the file it's just a 2k .mpg that won't open. Do you think the root of the problem might with how I capture it?

change the file extension to .ts and it should open in HDTVtoMPEG or just drag and drop files with .mpg in there and it should work. I'm not sure this is your real problem though. if the files play fine in their original format I wouldn't think it is a problem with the capture. what version of HDTVtoMPEG2 are you using I know I couldn't get it to work in a prior version.

Well I think I got it working now. I did have an old version of HDTVtoMPEG2, so I got the newest version but that was saying each file had an invalid extension and wouldn't open them, even the ones I renamed with a .ts extension. So I got a little older version and that DID work! Converted a 1 minute HD clip in 2 minutes and I was able to open it in VirtualDub with MPEG-2 support :) So all is well now, thank you for the support!

The problem is I cannot record any SD channels or digital channels such as TBS, FX, and standard definition movie channels like HBO2, and HBOWEST.
Do these now digitally broadcasted analog stations carry the same protection as the HI-DEF affiliates.
Also why am I able to record INHD2 but not INHD??? strange!

just a matter of the cable company having 5c implemented on some and not on others...major bummer if they turned it on for the digital simultrans channels...in my area local over the air HD channels provided over cable are unencrypted and have no 5c implemented.

I'm about to give the firewire recording a shot. My cable company seems to believe that the Motorola DCT6200 has no firewire ports (even though they are plain as day on the back of the box) and if it does, they are disabled. This doesn't sound right to me, so I'm going to try it anyway. The reason I called them was to find out what kind of cable to use (4 pin, 6 pin, etc.). This is my first foray into this, or even using firewire. Can someone tell me what cable I need?

Also, are there any issues with this box or any info that would be helpful? Is there a certain firmware revision necessary, and if so, how do I determine which version my box has?

Thanks,
Bob

Slim, do not know why I did not check before, but I tuned to ESPN's standard definiton channel and then went to the diagnosis page on my box by powering it down and then pushing select. Believe it or not in my area (west chicago) 5c implementation has been enabled for the A-DS channels. Unbelievable, this sucks.

It would be nice for a software package to work with 5c afterall the channels are not blocked from what I understand they are just encrypted. (0=record always) (1=record once) (2=never record). Such software that works with 5c would be legal, but where is it at?

I've got a SA3250 with SARA software feeding my HTPC with MCE via FW. The problem I have (and I once before saw it listed in here but didn't find an answer) is that sometimes I don't get a recording of a clear HD channel. (Heck more often than not I do't get the FW HD version) I think this is due to the cable box having previously been on a 5C channel and somehow that information does not get changed when MCE changes to an unprotected channel. I think this is why I get unreliable FW recordings. What advice can the group offer? Can I make some changes or should I get a different set top box from Cox?

If they're not 5C, by playing them back and dubbing to PC over firewire in real-time.
No, there's no way to do it by just "copying a file".

I have the same problem. Before any recording, I unplug the SA3250 box to reboot it. I then turn the channel directly to the station I want to record. This solves the problem.

Are you using windows or Mac? What software?
Cox or TWC?
Cable box software version?

I recorded CSI: NY this evening to my laptop using CapDVHS and had the program call the file "CSI: NY". However, I have come to realize that Windows does not like file names with unauthorized characters (such as the colon in my file name). Now, I've got a file that shows a size of 0 KB in Explorer but I know it's really about 7.7 GB because my hard drive space has been reduced by about this amount.

Does anyone have any idea what I can do to recover this file? I tried renaming but this hasn't seemed to work. I know the data is there....just can't get any app to recognize it.

Thanks,
Mark V.

check in %TEMP% or search *.* on the drive you think its on, and sort by filesize.
but i doubt the file (or data) is actually there.

I mean if CreateFile fails, and the coder is dumb enough to keep reusing that failed open handle, the data doesnt get written anywhere.

vasilemj
03-30-06, 01:18 AM
That's what I was afraid of. I know there is nearly 8 GB of data there because my available space on the drive went down by that amount, I just can't access it. Looks like I'm just SOL unfortunately for tonight's episode.

as a last resort, you could try a chkdsk from a command prompt and see if it finds the file an would save it, but odds are it will not be 100% usable anyway.

Thanks for the advice but I have deleted the 0KB file and, just as I suspected, my hard drive space magically increased by 8GB.

Please direct me to a forum that can answer this question if this forum is not meant for it.
Playback of video is supperb on my laptop it is a vaio model number vgn-fs630/w
however after I transfer the file to my desktop pc via 6' firewire cable, I noticed the video is choppy. Both pc's have similar hardware with respect to CPU and memory as well as hard drive space, although I doubt that is the problem. I actually opened the task manager and clicked on the performance tab while the video was playing on each machine. To my surprise on the laptop the CPU usage history rarely went above 50%, but on the desktop it was topped out at 100%. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am desperate beacuse I would rather save the files on the desktop rather tha the laptop. Please help!
Again the laptop is a sony vaio model numer vgn-fs630/w
The desktop has asus motherboard model number p4pe with 1.7ghz p4 and 512mb of ram. The video card is 128mb radeon 9000
Anyone with suggestions or similar problems please respond. Thankyou

I would check "HTPC" forum, and sections related to PLAYING content.
This one, as you would guess, is for "RECORDING".

From the information you've given though, I'd say ATI is to blame, how can you possibly expect quality HD decoding on a radeon 9000? Isn't that like 3-4 years old tech?
Please upgrade to NVidia 6600 or higher for proper HD playback. Also, you can rule out the "transfer of video over 6' fw cable" as the cause, as it would have very little to do with anything.

I have a weird story :

I have the 6412 connected via Firewire and composite (to view) to my PC. I spilled some chicken soup on the STB and I hear the computer make that noise when you pull out a USB device so I start to get worried. The motorola tuner AV/C device is gone from the device manager but the video from the composite is showing a picture. The picture has black static like streaks but I don't know if it was the movie or the soup.

The movie, as I later found out was Stir of Echoes. So anyways, I restart the computer and the tuner shows up in the device manager. I open up VLC and select the tuner. and it starts to play in HD the movie.

TNT-HD for me has 5c implementation. And it worked for a few minutes before it stopped showing it.

Hypothetically, let's say bogus info was sent to the 6412 that had 5c=0 to all the channels. would that be possible?

chuckvb

Ah you've discovered the secret Chicken Soup hack.

Actual I think it's normal that you get a few bits of the restricted channel if you just came from an unencripted one. It takes a few seconds to update the channel status. I think that's why I sometimes don't get my unencripted recordings, as the last channel was encripted.

The Pentium M in your laptop is quite a bit faster than the P4 in your desktop, even though they run at the same clock speed. I have the same desktop motherboard (P4PE) with a 2.4GHz P4 (533MHz bus) and I have a hard time with HDTV at times. I suspect that your desktop is doing software decoding of the MPEG stream which is taxing your CPU. The RADEON 9000 is capable of hardware MPEG decoding so perhaps you need to update your drivers, or use a different player that will use the right codec to enable the hardware acceleration. I'm not clear on the details for that card, so you'll have to look elsewhere for specific instructions.

Alternatively, you could update your graphics card to something like a 6600GT which features WMV-HD h/w acceleration in addition to MPEG.

INFORMATION RELATING TO PASSPORT 3.3 BUILD 029 FOR TWC NYC CUSTOMERS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EQUIPMENT
**********

SA 3250HD box
JVC HM-DH40000U D-VHS Recorder
HDTV with DVI
HDTV with Component Video Inputs
Digital DVI Switch Box

BUILD 029
**********

1. Latest Passport allows for firewire connection to D-VHS recorder and the HD recording of all HD and non HD channels in full resolution. Currently, the recording is full of video and audio artifacts; sometimes within seconds and other times minutes. I have yet to record a distortion free hour of HD material from any of the HD TWC channels.

2. The firewire output from the TWC 3250HD cable box under build 029 does not transmit data to a Windows XP SP2 based computer. CAPDVHS will run but record bothing under build 029.

3. DVI no longer works under build 029. Running diagnostics within the 3250HD box shows that DVI/HDMI is disabled and blocked under build 029. This can be a big problem since the booming (whites get too bright; ice hockey rinks, basketball courts, etc) under component video inputs can be tough with the 3250HD over the wider dynamic range output of the DVI/HDMI inputs.

4. The audio "popping" channel hooping between HD and analog channels is gone with build 029.

HD Recording
************

1. Build 029 does not allow Windows XP based firwire recording

2. Recording made with D-VHS recorder can be uplinked into Windows PC using CAPDVHS and stored onto hard drive. Then you can DIVx or use other forms of compression to get 2 hours of HD onto a standard sized 4.7GB DVD.

3. I have tried firewire 1 from 3250HD to D-VHS and D-VHS firewire out to Windows PC which does not work

4. Firewire 1 of 3250HD box to D-VHS works while firewire 2 of 3250HD to Windows PC does not. The same results if I were to switch firewire connects.

These are my findings and I have asked TWC in NYC to fix the DVI operations malfunction.
No solution have been posted.

Thanks for that heads up.

Going from SP2 back to SP1 may be a difficult undertaking. I wonder if there is some patch that fixes the firewire end under SP2 if that is the culprit.

I have a Motorola 6412 Phase 3 recently upgraded from a Phase 1 (because it died). I'm running into this problem that when I capture the stream (.ts) to my PC via firewire, the PVR would lock up afterwards. It would no longer allow me to fast forward/rewind at the normal rate, which makes it more diffcult to stream other shows. I use the methods on this board to do the streaming (CapDVHS, drivers, etc). The only way I could fix this thus far is to reboot the PVR.

I read a few other people experiencing this problem but has there been a fix? I never had this problem before with the old PVR and firmware.

for some reason I could also see the TVGOS stuff through VLC. Bah. I may have selected my capture card instead of motorola tuner. who knows, it was 3 in the morning but I could have sworn I selected the tuner because the ratio was 16:9 and not the one with letterbox.

Anyways, what I want to know is since it's realtime recording, will fast forward just mess up the stream? I'm getting terrible sync errors trying to archive some HD content.

In my obvervation, something is not quite right about the "handshake" between the driver and the cable box once the cable box acknowleges that the driver is there and the driver has finished consuming data from the cable box. Who would be more likely to correct the problem, the developer of the cable box firmware or the developer of the driver? It's probably no fault of either one, given the "on-off-on-again" nature of how we are using CapVHS. Personaly, given the success I'm having, I don't want anyone messing with the firmware in my cable box :-)

If I'm copying a bunch of stuff down I usually change the name of what I'm copying to "Junk" while I'm jockeying around with the FF and RW. Enableing capture with CapVHS frees-up the FW and RW. When I'm where I want to be I change the name and do the capture. When all is complete I delete Junk.ts. You can also use VLC to free up FF and RW.

This is a great thread with great info, but i'm running into a problem I havn't been able to find a solution for and havn't seen anyone else (at least post) this problem.

Whenever I try to record or even view HD from my Motorola 6200 (firmware 7.15) to my SYBA PCI to Firewire 1394a 3+1 in my Athlon XP 2000 it only lets me record for about a minute or 2 before the CPU usage shoots through the roof. I can go back and view the short recordings, so I know the 2 are communicating.
I've used VLC media player, capdvhs, and graphedit. I used graphedit and inserted filters to try recording HD, but still am only able to for a few minutes. After a few minutes I have to reboot to try viewing/recording HD again.

I've tried swapping out my PCI firewire card into my Athlon 3700 to see if my athlon 2000 didn't have the horsepower, but the 3700 CPU shot through the roof too.

I'm wondering if anyone else had a similar problem like this.

The 3 long shot ideas I can think of are:
1) reformat another drive to 64k clusters
2) I'm running xp SP2 and i've read that sp2 messed up the firewire drivers so I can try using the SP1 drivers.
3) maybe Syba makes a bad firewire card?

Thanks for any thoughts

What are the Advanced Properties for the folder you are capturing to?

Thanks for the response...Whatever process i'm running is the one that eventually reaches 90-100% cpu. If i'm running VLC, then that reaches 100 or if I'm using graphedit to record then it reaches 100%. I eventually have to kill the process and reboot the system and try again.

Word of caution for you SA3250HD users: Cox Phoenix just pushed out new firmware on Tuesday morning (SARA 1.58.7.1 dated 6/8/05). This firmware has completely disabled PC firewire recording, on both the original meidvhs and timmmoore's driver sets. There is no difference between copy-freely and copy-once channels: nothing shows up in any recording app or VLC for any channel. I suppose the rest of providers in the country will be pushing out this new firmware at some point, too.

This is a great thread, and was really helpful the first time I tried doing this.

However, I've run into a huge problem.

The first time I went through all the steps of setting this up, it worked great. I was able to capture a few minutes of video/audio but had to put everything away because we were expecting family for the next few days.

Anyways, about 4 days pass and I go to use the device again and nothing works. My PC no longer recognizes ANY connection from my DVR to my PC.

I have a Motorola DCT6412 III with Firmware 12. My PC is a Sony Vaio running Windows XP SP2 Home Edition.

I've tried various fixes, such are rolling back the drivers to those of SP1. I even tried uninstalling the Firewire Controller from the Device Manager, rebooting and reinstalling. None of that is helping.

I know the cable works, I know the port on my PC works, and I'm 95% sure the firewire port on the back of the Motorola still works. I can't be certain, however in the Status page, it says that the port is still active on the back of the DVR.

In my Registry, there are two version of the Motorola box. I tried deleting those entries in hopes that maybe windows would try to regrab the box as 'New Hardware" but no luck.

The only thing I can think of is since the first time I used it, I purchased the MLB Extra Innings package, and Comcast (my provider) may have put out a new firmware that disabled the port. That said, the setup still says it is active though.

Any help would be appreciated on this one. If there is any more info you need, let me know.

EDIT: Nevermind. I turned the box off and pulled the power from the wall for a minute. This fixed the problem.

It's quite possible that Comcast enacted 5c protection to block video output to any non 5c enabled device. Do you have any 5c enabled device such as a DVHS deck or firewire enabled TV to test it out on and see if the STB's firewire port is in fact active? If so i would advise trying that and seeing if you get an A/V feed.

If you want different drivers, you can go to "Update Drivers", then "No, not this time" then "I will choose the driver to select" and then point it to the correct drivers. Ignore any warnings it gives you and go ahead and update.

With the motorola, you can find the drivers. I'd post the url, but my post count doesn't allow it.

I have a question for those 'in the know'. CapDVHS says that it is capturing the stream at 2.87 MBpS. When I generally do a wall-cable-PC capture using TV tuner card, it's at anywhere from 4 MBps to 8MBps, and I never burn a sports dvd with anything less than 6 MBpS stream.

So, is the 2.87 MBpS normal, and does it burn good DVDs or should I bump up the settings and if so, how?

I just spent the last three days reading all 2000+ messages on this thread. I have done my homework as best as I can and I have only seen a couple other mentions of the problem I am having (and no solutions).

I've got BrightHouse cable in Orlando, FL. Just picked up an SA3250HD. Passport, btw. No issues installing drivers. No issues getting the box itself recognized in XP.

I get three different types of results when capturing:

1) Perfect captures. Only two channels give me this. ESPN-HD and UPN-HD. These (at least the ESPN that I just double-checked) report a bit rate of 38Mbps when capturing in CapDVHS. Sounded high to me, but whatever. It works.

2) Unplayable captures with no info reported by CapDVHS. This makes sense. These are all on the channels that are 5c=1 (HBO-HD, SHO-HD, INHD, etc.).

3) Captures that look like they are working but turn out to be garbled crap. This is on channels that are 5c=0 (locals, etc.). The only thing I can distinguish here is that on these channels, CapDVHS reports a bit rate of 80Mbps while it is capturing. When I play the resulting files, I see video that is 90% trash -- garbled, blocky, a lot of it is totally black or green with some moving blocks of video, occasional frames with partial picture, etc. The audio has similar problems -- it is mostly noise with occasional pops of real sound.

What is going on here? Anything I can do about it?

By the way, I see the exact same results consistently on the same channels regardless of which capture app I use (ie. same thing in DCTRecord). Also, I've tried the different generations of drivers (original meidvhs.inf, current firewire.zip, etc.) with consistently the same results.

I can add that I have tried both firewire ports on the 3250. Same results either way. I have also done this whole procedure in both regular XP Pro and in MCE on the same PC (dual-boot). Same results either way.

Also, when I just use VLC to view my HD channels on the PC, I still get the exact same results. Those 80Mbps channels view just as garbled with VLC as they capture. And likewise, the two channels I can capture ok also view perfectly in VLC.

The only thing I haven't tried yet that I might be able to without too much pain is to use another PC and see if the results are the same. But I'm betting they will be. Is there any thought that a more powerful system might be able to handle 80Mbps coming in through fw and capture it w/o garbling??? The PC I am using now is a P4 3.0GHz with HyperThreading / 1GB Dual-Channel DDR RAM.

Help! Thanks so much!

brownmaxxx, I ran in to similar issues with my 3250 here in Phoenix on Cox (SARA). The 3250 seems to be very picky about when it will work right when connecting to a PC, and it always took me some magic combination of box reboots, PC reboots, unplugging and reconnecting the firewire cable, and virgin sacrifices to get a reliable recording. What generally worked best was the following procedure:
Unplug firewire cable
Unplug box power cable, count to 30, and plug it back in
Reboot PC while box is syncing
Plug in firewire cable once the box is ready to go
Install drivers
Unplug firewire cable
Reboot PC
Plug in firewire cable

Generally, this also involved a lot of swearing, and occasionally a beer or 2 to pass the time while waiting for the PC to reboot *again*. These issues persisted across multiple boxes and multiple Windows installs (and both SP1 and SP2), and I've heard similar tales of woe from other people with the 3250. It's a moot point now, however, as Cox pushed out new firmware this week that killed PC recording.

coyoteaz, when you had your issues with the 3250 did you see any behavior like I do (some HD channels recording ok but others garbled)? Or were you having an inability to record all the channels when it wasn't working? I am wondering whether the problem you had is the same as mine or if it had a completely different cause.

Is there any actual reason to think the 80Mbps bit rate I am seeing on the channels I can't record is bogus and it is due to something flakey in the setup (as opposed to that just *being* the bit rate)?

My initial line of thinking was that since I can get perfect captures on a couple channels, this more or less "proves" I have everything installed right. If so, I don't get why reinstalling drivers would change the behavior.

Anyway, another question: in your "procedure" above, were you also removing the hardware devices from Device Manager before you reboot the PC the first time? Otherwise, it would just detect the 3250 when you reconnect the firewire and it wouldn't be looking to reinstall the drivers. Thanks.

this 80Mbps can not be correct as a single 256QAM channel has a bandwidth of 43Mbps. however if the stream is reporting that it could create some issues I imagine but I had not problems. I noted at one point PBS-HD was reporting 80Mbps but I did not experience any problems capturing and the rate the video was playing at was more like 12Mbps. It now says PBS is about 11Mbps and based on the rate the video plays at I assume this to be correct. I beleive the change was made by the broadcaster but it could have something to do with the cable company also.

Unfortunately you can't do this. You can't just connect your DVR hard drive to your computer and have the computer access it. The DVR is actually its own computer and has a completely different file system which is encrypted so that you can not gain access to it from any external source (perhaps besides units built by the service provider to do just this). You will have to transfer via firewire, as long as the cable company has not enforced 5c which will prohibit you from doing this. Other than that, the only way to get your recordings off the DVR would be to manually hook up a recording source to the A/V outputs of the box and actively capture it as you play back on the STB.

Does anyone know if why when I play a recorded file, record it and then play it it will not show anything??

Also since i've been attempting to redo this whole process from the start, i no longer have to reboot the dvr to fix the fast forward and rewind issue.

Can you explain what you did?
Did you test thoroughly that the problem indeed got fixed with new drivers, etc? I would like it very much if I can get rid of this annoying problem as well.

Probably you are recording a "5c" protected channel. What channel are you recording? In my area almost all digital channels except the broadcast channels are "5c" protected.

It is DHDTV from Comcast..I didn't really try any other station just the one. I hate having to record to DVD then rip it to computer..Such a waste a time.

PS How do I know if the programs are protected???
