This is considered to be part of the overscan area that won't display on a TV. I've even heard that closed captioning is transmitted in the video stream by using part of this overscan area, but I don't know definitively that this is true. ylsf 12-11-05, 11:28 PM I posted a thread in the computer forum because I wasn't sure where to post it. I can't link that thread to here because I have less than 5 posts.... I have been able to capture okay, so, but on some programs when I record via firewire I can playback fine on my computer but I can't convert it to standard MPG or another format (i.e. I can't load it into VideoReDo or HDTV2MPGE) It pixelates right at the beginning of the firewire capture no mater at what point I capture the video... ANy help would be appreciated JimVR4 12-12-05, 11:38 PM I had trouble getting the original set of drivers to work under Windows MCE. Using these drivers http://replayguide.sourceforge.net/dct6412/index.html I was able to get captures working properly under MCE. The installation instructions are also updated so they more closely follow XPSP2 with or without MCE so it's easier to get it right the first time. ANy help would be appreciated What happens when you try to load it into H2? I had some trouble with some files where there were changes in format. This happened because I changed the 6412 from TV to DVR so I could playback a previously recorded movie. Some of the time these transitions would confuse H2. Someone posted a utility called PRM earlier in this thread. PRM fixes the Packet Identifiers (PIDs) during these transitions. After fixing the file H2 would have no problems processing it. Cucuy 12-13-05, 03:15 AM Hi, I just started reading about how to archive stuff from my Comcast Motorola 6412 on to my XP PC. Upon reading I found out about the 5c flag and while looking its value in the setup screen I noticed that the ieee1394 ports are not active in my box? Pic attached below Does 0 means IEEE 1394 is unactive? Is this controlled by Comcast or Motorola? Does this mean I can not record from the box to my XP PC? IndieRockSteve 12-13-05, 10:08 AM Do any XP users have issues changing channels over the firewire port? I'm a MythTV user and many of us are finding we get errors when changing channels. I'm tryng to figure out what the problem is so we can fix it, so I was wondering if any Windows users have the problem? if you could just PM me I'd appreciate the info! thanks mystere2 12-13-05, 10:56 AM Cucuy, Mine say the same thing. As long as it says they are installed you are fine. That value doesn't show a 1 unless they are currently being used. I'm tryng to figure out what the problem is so we can fix it, so I was wondering if any Windows users have the problem? Not all tuners support changing the channel over the firewire port, so it's probably important to be specific about which tuner you're asking about. The HD tuner in my Mitsubishi WS-65909 RPTV is one that doesn't support changing channels of the firewire port. I'm having the same issue. ylsf 12-13-05, 11:24 PM So, I used PRM based on a suggestion above on one of my files. I was able to load it up in Videoredoplus but after a few seconds I get the message "Video Thread: Video Dimensions Change" and then videoredoplus crashes! I think what happened was I started recording before selecting the file for playback (so, it recorded a bit of normal tv). That change point is what is causing a problem. I can't recapture it via firewire because I deleted it off my 6412 already. The other error code I am getting with another video file is that it is saying "unable to open <<then the file name>> No data found for requested program(s)" I tried converting it/fixing it with PRM and MPEG2REPAIR but it didn't help. I also tried converting using HDTV2MPEG but the problem was that the converted file was just a blank, empty mpeg... stealyourface 12-15-05, 02:27 AM Hi, I have been able to get this working with a Motorola DCT-6412. I've got Comcast with a Motorola 6412 PVR. I'm in Sunnyvale, CA. I have everything set up correctly as far as I can tell. I've selected Panasonic D-VHS in the device driver and CapDVHS sees the device correctly. When I try to record, it never updates the Data info tab in CapDVHS with stream properties. Also, I can't play back the files it generates. The files grow as if it's recording (it saves around 2MB/s), but the file is not playable with any players I tried. I've got a Motorola 6412 box with platform build version 12.13 (May 3 2005) Looking at the Diagnostic screen of the PVR (pwr - ok) and under Interface Status (menu d11), I see the 1384 I/O device shows: Active ports; 1 DataXmission: YES 5C Implementation: 0 Loop Status: No Root Status: YES Cycle Master Status: YES Is it true that if the "5C Implementation" is 0, then the stream is unencrypted? A friend of mine says what I'm seeing is a symptom of encrypted material. I've only attempted to record my local channels, but no dice. Why would my local channels be encrypted? Does this mean I'm SOL? Thanks for any advice. What is the best way of doing that. I have a 2 hours program and it comes out being 7 gigs of space. I want to be able to burning it to a regular DVD not a DL. Can you tell me what tools to use to do that? hjohns1 12-20-05, 08:46 PM HDTV2DVD is a new freeware tool to simply convert your HDTV material to DVD. HDTV captures are MPEG-2 Transport Streams at either 1280 x 720p or 1920 x 1080i resolution yet DVD is typically MPEG-2 Program Streams at 720 x 480 (for NTSC). This means that to play HD material on a "normal" DVD player you have to convert the source. This is what HDTV2DVD does in a simple, user friendly way. Load up your HDTV file (.ts or .tp), start the processing and HDTV2DVD will produce a VIDEO_TS DVD folder ready for you to burn! http://www.svcd2dvd.com/HDTV2DVD/default.aspx Bigfish6 12-20-05, 10:40 PM I purchased a Motorola Dct 6412/2000 my cable provider says it is the wrong frequency and won't activate it... is this true or are they just lying to me cause they want to force me to purchase a new receiver through them at their outragous price? As he doesn't tell us what market he's in or who his provider is, it hard to tell - but odds are 99% that the frequency excuse is bunk. Cable Channels are standardized on frequency. Motorola uses the same encryption on their boxes. There is a chart on the Cisco website that has the cable frequencies for each channel (Analog/Digital/QAM) if you are interested. Now, obviously they would have to to authorize the box to work on their network - changing it from a different network - which is most likely the rub. Of course if they don't want you to use your own box (like most cable providers do to prevent unauthorized service theft), you are SOL. An STB talks to the Headend by way of an internal two-way cable modem. The Forward Data Channel (FDC) downloads the software build to the STB after your STB has successfully negotiated authentication from the Headend via the Reverse Data Channel (RDC). The so-called OOB (Out Of Band) channel frequencies can be assigned anywhere within the 8-26.5 MHz (FDC) and 70-130 MHz (RDC) bands. If you are picking up some channels, they are probably the unencrypted analog channels (below CH100) that any normal cable ready TV can receive. imf4 12-21-05, 04:38 PM I have two Comcast 6412s sitting one on top of the other. One is a Phase 2 (DVI) the other is a Phase 3 (HDMI). On the Phase 2, CAPDVHS can record all HD channels. On the Phase 3, it can record all the HD channels except an NBC affiliate I've power cycled both units and the behavior stays the same. D11 is the same on all the HD channels on both DVR's, 5C=0. This includes the one channel that won't record over firewire on the Phase 3. Looking at D6, there is a difference. On the Phase 3 the RC flag is 0 on all the channels that record, and RC is 1 on the one that won't. On the Phases 2, the RC flag is 2 on all channels. I don't know what the RC flag is. There are other differences in the D6 flags between the Phase 2 and Phase 3 DVR's. However, these differences don't vary at all with the HD channel. APS and CIT are 0 on the Phase3, while APS is 4 with CIT 2 on the Phase 2. Does anyone know what these D6 flags mean, particularly the RC flag which seems to predict the record problem on the Phase 3? What about diagnostics from the PC side? CAPDVHS just fails to show a resolution or frame rate for the "bad" channel on the Phase 3. Is there a way to get a real error message?I know I am a little late answering this question but, I was told by Motorola that this is set by the local stations and is not set by the cable company. It stands for Redistribution Control Flag. It is set to 1 on 3 of my 5 locals so I can't record them through the firewire. Everyone I have talked to thinks it is the broadcast flag. I have tried to email all my local channels engineering departments but they just ignore it. slim79 12-21-05, 06:25 PM If you read he said he purchased one directly from them, thus unless he lives in Houston, where it supports both SA and Motorola, but TWC doesn't sell their boxes (so obviously he's not there) that isn't the issue. Now, obviously they would have to to authorize the box to work on their network - changing it from a different network - which is most likely the rub. it is my understanding that 75.25MHz is a standard downstream OOB frequency for motorola I don't think all boxes have the ablility to range for different frequencies any SA box in my area that had SA's standard OOB frequency and did not range for other frequencies would not work. i don't doubt that they know little about this or are full of BS I just thought it was a possibility that this was the case but if they support both it seems obvious this is not the issue. frequencies to be used are standard where the channels lie and how many channels are in a particular QAM depends on your cable provider. with digital channels it is really just mapping a virtual number to the channel as EIA channel 85 might contain 12 digital channels in the 500s. it is up to the OOB to receive the map that tells it what digital channels are at what frequency. the analog tuner will tune without this. slim79 12-21-05, 06:56 PM I forgot to mention that I purchased the box from the u.s and am trying to activate it with my local Shaw cable provider here in Canada. RandyBee 12-24-05, 09:07 AM You have a stolen Cox Cable DVR that will never be able to be activated. It is possible it is a stolen box but i doubt Shaw cable would recognize a box stolen from a Cox cable system. Cox does sell these DVRs to customers as well as rent. My guess is it is a difference between the ways Cox & Shaw have their systems setup. RandyBee 12-24-05, 12:53 PM I find that every time I capture with CapDVHS the video and audio are assigned to different PIDs which causes a variety of issues with Mpeg2Repair, VideoReDo & TStoATSC. They can be anything from 0x11 & 0x14 to 0x101 & 0x102, 0x201 & 0x202 and I even have a couple 0xa1 & 0xa4. I tried capturing with VLC but I believe my settings are off because the video quality is bad compared to CapDVHS.My questions are as follows... What assigns the PIDs? Can they be changed after recording? Why can VLC always read these files but the other programs can't? UPDATE: I read further into TStoATSC and apparently this program asks for the video and audio PIDs or what they are BEFORE you process the file but then converts the final product to standard 0x11 & 0x14. I will test this further... ylsf 12-24-05, 04:42 PM What assigns the PIDs? Can they be changed after recording? Why can VLC always read these files but the other programs can't? I wish I knew the same answer. I can capture stuff with CapDvhs and VLC can play everything, but, I can't repair with any of the programs you listed in order to convert to an mpeg2. RandyBee 12-24-05, 07:39 PM I wish I knew the same answer. I can capture stuff with CapDvhs and VLC can play everything, but, I can't repair with any of the programs you listed in order to convert to an mpeg2. Just a few questions to try and help. When you record with CapDVHS does it populate the transfer info (other than the timer in the bottom left corner?) such as 720x480i 12.7 Mbps transfer rate etc.? If not it is either a problem with the capture or a 5C/encryption issue. If it does populate properly when did you start your recording? I find that I have to bring up the DVR List, choose the file, select play and then pause it all BEFORE I start recording. After I hit record THEN I unpause the file. Don't ask me why but I find this creates less errors. I have had to start my recordings a couple minutes before start time to avoid cutting off the beginning of my files because I'm a perfectionist. It seems that QuickStream Fix can't fix files enough for VideoRedo to open them but Mpeg2Repair will most of the time. If not then I'll use TStoATSC but some still won't open in VideoRedo so I may drop the program. I'm still refining my process but this is what I've found out so far. ylsf 12-25-05, 12:30 AM RandyBee: Thanks for trying to help The only info populated is Size, Aspect Ratio, Frame Rate, Bit Rate. EDIT: Ok. I had some success last night with using Project X on one of the files I had problems with http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=ProjectX I used it on the one that I started recording before selecting the program on the list menu for playback. (i.e., ir was recording live tv via the firewire and then switched to transfering a pre-recorded capture via firewire). There was a ratio change (in the screen size) and whatever program I used (PRM, HDTVtoMPeg, Videoredo, mpeg2repair,etc) couldn't handle it. So, that solved one problem. I am converting the resulting file to divx now (after using videoredo to take out the commercials...). However, I still have issue with this other program that I can record on my HD ok and can view in VLC ok but I can't convert with any program! I will take a look at it again today in between family get togethers :) Happy holidays everyone! First: By VLN I'm assuming you're referring to VideoLan now called VLC. If not disregard... I personally haven't played much with watching live programming through VLC as I have had enough problems capturing SD content. Which brings me to my question. What settings are you using to capture/record to HD using VLC? I tried a couple settings (Mpeg2 ts and Mpeg4 I think) but the video quality was dim and pixelized compared to the quality of video/audio from CapDVHS. However, I have problems with inconsistent captures with CapDVHS so I'm curious about VLC. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll play with live video and see if I have the same issues too. benven 12-27-05, 10:24 AM First: By VLN I'm assuming you're referring to VideoLan now called VLC. If not disregard... Oops. My bad. It is VLC. There seems to be some variability in the functionality of VLC. I was capturing SD, with CapDVHS and VLC, on Sat. I saw very little difference in the quality between both and compared to the live program. I was capturing ts files in CapDVHS and mpeg2 ts in VLC. I am using VLC v8.4. Live TV may be important to me because I would like to unify my system. DVDs look very good through VLC. AC3 output, without additional decoders, is a bonus. The quality is better than my LG upconverting DVD player. So, I was thinking, why not use 1 box, a computer, for TV and DVD playback. Real time capturing, ie daily/weekly program recording, on the computer isn't that important to me because the 6412 is very user friendly and really easy to record with. Downloading the 6412 hardrive is more important to me. I would like to hear back from you and from others on their experiences with live TV and VLC. Dieselhum 12-27-05, 10:27 AM Hey guys. I hope that this will help those making the drivers in any way possible. Note below how the first 1394 id belongs to the Motorola box as well, not sure exactly what that is, but it might well be the hard drive inside the box or the other tuner. For that matter it could well be the device that controls the unit's ability to see the OnDemand programming or PVR information also it could be the analog tuner, which I doubt because I can view the analog programming already with this as well as navigate to those channels. I am not getting any type of dialogue box that has any "uncheck show compatible hardware" I have also done what jb33 suggested and cancelled on all 3 then tried to install the driver via device mgr, but I do not get this check box there either. Here is what I get from the point of the av/c tuner detection. 1st dialogue box: New Hardware Wizard: Can windows connect to Windows update to look for the driver? Yes or No radio button. Anyone here that has succesfully completed this process with the same problems that I am having plz post here exactly how to get thru this. I get the exact same dialogue boxes if I try to install the driver manually thru the device mgr. slim79 01-04-06, 07:11 PM Hey there. I have been working on this for a couple of days now and I'm stuck. I saw a reference to the problem I am having in a post above by jb33. I am not getting any type of dialogue box that has any "uncheck show compatible hardware" I have also done what jb33 suggested and cancelled on all 3 then tried to install the driver via device mgr, but I do not get this check box there either. Here is what I get from the point the av/c tuner 1st dialogue box: New Hardware Wizard: Can windows connect to Windows update to look for the driver? Yes or No radio button. What I want to know is why the discussion is focused on HD streams. This is the only site that discusses anything about capturing from cable boxes. Is there an easier way to download non-HD streams? JT weldon 01-05-06, 12:06 PM Is there an easier way to download non-HD streams? I use a Mac to capture programs from a Motorola 6412 and the process is identical for SD and HD programs. Is there some particular aspect that you were interested in? I suppose you could make different choices when reencoding, but I'm pretty certain that capture is going to be exactly the same process. Naylia 01-05-06, 01:09 PM Hopefully 2006 will usher in a new wave of open source software that uses this information to allow for us to be able to use a cable box to view/record all our channels onto a PC in the future, without the need for multiple applications to do it. Well SageTV gets you a long ways there...seems that support for TS streams has gotten far enough along that PVRing both SD and HD doesn't seem to have any issues any more...have to try it myself again to believe it later this week. drglock 01-06-06, 12:32 AM Thanks for the helpful tips. No way you can dump all the channels over firewire, there is just too much bandwidth.... besides, the cablebox can only tune into one channel at a time, unless you have 2 tuners in it. weldon 01-06-06, 12:47 AM Is there a way to simply dump the data from the cablebox HD over the firewire? I think you are asking if you can access the programs recorded on the DVR as though the box were an external hard drive. The short answer is "no" you cannot access the recorded programs directly through the file system. The box can only stream the current video output over firewire, which you can capture on your PC. boozshey 01-06-06, 12:48 AM Nevermind... drglock 01-06-06, 12:59 AM I think you are asking if you can access the programs recorded on the DVR as though the box were an external hard drive. I want to just transfer all of the programs that are on the HD there to my PC HD and then edit/watch/burn them from there, rather than have to record each program indivudually. The MPEG2 files on the cablebox HD are not only encrypted but can only be decrypted by the box that made the original recording. So if your cablebox dies, you probably can't have the cable techs move the HD to a new cablebox. So you can't simply move the files (or even the entire HD) to a PC and play them back. This is EXACTLY what they intended with their encryption and Data Rights Management (DRM) philosphy. Today the only way to view the file is to actually play it back in real time on the cablebox. ======================================= In the future, as part of the HD-DVD, HD-BLU-RAY, IPTV, Mobile TV and other efforts; they are working on DRM protocols which will allow you to hold onto various files (from WHATEVER source...including CATV and DVB) and play them back later in different rooms and on mobile devices (e.g. your car or cellphone). Play back of these encrypted files on a PC, MAC or Palm/PocketPC is part of these efforts. Resolving some of these difficult DRM issues has been the major reason why these systems have been delayed over and over again.... drglock 01-07-06, 01:56 AM Thanks again for the info everyone. Of course, Now I have a new host of problems. Anyone experience this or have any suggestions on what to do? Last night, while watching cable on my PC with VLC, my Motorola 6214 just powered itself off. I turned it back on but no longer found a capture device when i ran VLC or DVHS. I went to the device manager to remove the hardware and reinstall it, but I couldnt find it anywhere. I tried to remove the IEEE adapters and reinstall them in hopes that would work, but no dice! Now everytime I open DVHC or VLC it says no tuner detected, and whenever I try to re-do the installation, Windows does not detect any new hardware! So im kinda screwed here. What I need to know is How to remove all info about the Moto box so that Windows can redetect it? Or does someone know more about this issue? Roveer 01-08-06, 12:40 AM I decided to try recording from my Motorola 6208 tonight using 1394. Installed the drivers per this post and using CAPDVHS it actually worked... When playing back on my PC using VLC Media Player I found that in scenes with action there were annoying horizontal "double lines", like interlace fields or something. Any idea what is going on? Otherwise it looked great, definetly the HD stream. Regards, Roveer HiTymz 01-08-06, 01:52 AM To get rid of those lines in VLC Click the video tab then go to deinterlace select discard and only select discard. I have found selecting other things doesn't really cure the lines and may restart your computer!!! Good Luck niceguy321 01-08-06, 05:35 PM This thread is very helpful -- thanks to everyone that put the time into figuring out how to do the capture. I've installed the software on my laptap and I can successfully capture HD streams using the Motorola DVR box from Comcast. I can play these back on my PC using VLC, although results are not optimal because CPU isn't powerful enough. This leads me to my question: My Samsung DLP HD TV has a firewire / 1394 input jack. Can anyone point me to a thread or software that would enable me to send the captured mpeg2 data stream out my PC's firewire port to the TV set? I am guessing this would use minimal CPU resources on the PC and the TV would be doing all the "heavy lifting". My laptop is running Windows XP. Thanks! Marc Wow, you must bee my twin brother, because I'm in the exact same situation(same exact setup). I think I saw something mentioned about a program called dtvrecorder that would playback files onto a hdtv, but I don't remember where I saw it or if it was even out. Edit: I'm trying to use the latest ver. of hdtvtompeg2, the 2 gig .ts file, and after it completes converting, the result is a 3 kb .mpg file that is unplayable. what is up? arklebk 01-08-06, 10:22 PM Just wondering if anyone has any information on pulling video from the Scientific Atlanta 8300 to PC? Then retry it, using the instructions at the beginning of this thread, and download the fileset from the link below, which includes DMA's revised drivers for the Motorolla boxes, timmoore's channel changer, and graphedit with a sample for watching from the Motorolla 6412, as well as a copy of CapDVHS, which works better than the graphedit, or you can go hunt everywhere for all these files. It would also be benificial if you have NVDVD from NVidia to view the files with as it has a built in ts info parser which is something you need to view them with. I would also reccomend at least another 512MB DDR, PC3200 or better, memory. link is dead can i get it somewhere else? Do a forum search for "capture component" to find more details. Basic answer: The reason for using firewire is that it's the only way to get the original COMPRESSED digital video stream - which is exactly what goes INTO your cable box in the first place. It's easily captured & managed by almost any PC. What comes OUT of your cable box - uncompressed digital (DVI) or analog (component) HD video - requires like 50-70 times more bandwidth, disk space & compute power. You'll need something like $5-$10K worth of broadcast-studio type gear to do the latter. jtatfsu 01-11-06, 10:16 PM Common question - been answered many times. It is very noticeable in things like football games and movies. What is causing it? RandyBee 01-14-06, 12:13 PM I find that every time I capture with CapDVHS the video and audio are assigned to different PIDs which causes a variety of issues with Mpeg2Repair, VideoReDo & TStoATSC. Ok I have had some success since I last posted. Below is the process I follow in case it helps others. My first suggestion is to go buy a five pack or less of DVD+RW discs to burn to until you get your process down otherwise you'll probably waste ALOT of DVDs working out the many bugs it seems most of us face in this venture. Despite the occasional lucky poster I think the rest of us had to experiment quite a bit as there is alot that can go wrong from point A to point B. I Capture using CapDVHS I open the .ts file with DGIndex to determine what Video and Audio PIDs the file has (ie: Video/Audio 0x11 0x14 or 0x101 0x102 or 0x201 0x202 etc) If it is any combination other than standard Video 11 & Audio 14 I process the file with TStoATSC which asks what the PIDs are BEFORE processing. Make sure you use the -c flag to correct the file if possible and the -q to minimize garbage across the screen while the file is processing. If the file isn't too buggy it will tear right through and produce a file with standard PIDs 11 & 14. I then can load the file in VideoRedo edit out the commercials, join files together and save as a .mpg or leave in .ts (for my method I convert to .mpg I then load the file into nero Vision Express where I can make a menu from any graphic off the Internet and create new chapters if I wish (VideoRedo can add chapters in regular intervals also) . I save the project for future use and preview the menu and chapters verifying no audio/video sync issues and then write it to the hard drive. Since my files usually exceed 4.7g and I refuse to pay for DL DVDs I load the Video folder and files created by Nero into DVDShrink. I verify that the preview still shows no signs of sync imbalance throughout the movie then I run a Deep Analysis and then select Backup which compresses the file to fit on a standard 4.7 DVD. I still haven't figured out how to deal with a few files with odd PIDs such as Video 0xa1 Audio 0xa2 TStoATSC doesn't know how to deal with these and neither do I. Occasionally I run a file through Mpeg2Repair if TStoATSC won't read it initially. Then I process it with TStoATSC. In the past I had some luck with HDTV2Mpeg2 but sometimes the preview screen doesn't populate so editing is impossible and I had a file or two with audio sync issues after combining files but it may work for some. If you don't have/want Nero or menus with chapters you can combine you files into one .ts file and load it into HDTV2DVD (just make sure you told VideoRedo to add chapters automatically every 10 to 20 minutes as some DVD players will mess up without them). VLC Media Player is a good program to watch .ts files with some people even capture with it but I get lower quality for some reason than what I capture from CapDVHS. Elecard and Womble Video are big in the video world but they can be confusing or tedious to a newbie like myself. I didn't go into specific detail about each program to condense my post but if you need links to any of these files or have setup/operation questions just post. I recorded Motley Crue's Carnival of Sins from INHD and wanted to have a copy on DVD. I'm pretty sure it was 5C cause most stuff from INHD is. So when I go to record using CAPVHS sometimes it would record and sometimes not. I would just look at the resolution screen to see if it was recording or not and if it wasn't, I would just start it over. Everything seem to install fine, cancelled the first device...the next device was the correct one I installed it and updated the driver to the "Panasonic D-VHS AV/C Device" version. Still things seemed smooth yet Capdvhs would still report "no capture device found". So I decided to remove all the drivers and try installing the "Microsoft Firewire 400 fix" which installed firewire drivers made prior to SP2. Now I my system only reports "Unknown Hardware Found" when I plug the firewire cable in, I cancel that...and I get no further prompts for any devices. Is it possible the firewire 400 'update' screwd things worse? does anyone have a suggestion on either removing those drivers or a potential fix? When connecting 6208 to PC, I get usual sound chirps and New Hardware Found Wizard..... I always state that I will find drivers etc.... When it comes to installing the device - it always states "Unknown Device" - NOT Tuner AV/C device... So I go into Device Manager and can see in the ?Other Devices profile, there is Tuner AV/C, AV/C Panel, and 3 Unknown Devices.... I pick Tuner, click to update driver, New Hardware Wizard pops up. It has Tuner AV/C in it I update driver to MEIDVHS folder, BUT it doesn't expand so I don't directly pick Meitape.inf.... After installation, in the Device Manager I now see Tuner AV/C in the Network Adapter. For some reason I decide to disable the Unknown Device and after I do that, the Tuner AV/C in the Network Adapter disappears. I haven't been able to get it to reappear. I installed the new XP 1394 fix - no help. Don't know where to go since I don't know where the driver was installed. PLEASE HELP. ishloss 01-15-06, 12:20 AM Got the thing going now. Pretty cool. The whole point of this is so that I can record some of the kids shows so they can watch them on their TV. The shows are from Nick, and I tried doing one and, when playing it back, it played for about a second and then locked. I then tried recording a different episode, and it didn't pick up the aspect ratio or any of that stuff. Is there a way I can manually put that stuff in? I've been able to record other shows as a test off of the box for both live TV and DVR stuff. Thanks in advance! RandyBee 01-15-06, 01:41 AM So I've read the main post....followed the instructions completely.... I am running a RCN Cableworks/Motorola 6412 with firmware 12.xx plugged into my Dell 1.6ghz 512mb Ram 128mb ATI Radeon on WinXP SP2. Please help! Sounds like the drivers aren't fully loaded... Just curious what set of drivers are you using? I have the same box and it seems like I selected Motorola DCT 6412 off of the list and then you have to tell CapDVHS what capture device to use and it listed the Motorola as well. Once the Moto 6412 was properly installed, I used CapDVHS to capture and I used SVCD2DVD to convert .ts to a playable MPEG-2. Here's my question: I captured a 1 hour Carlin show off of HBO. The .ts file was a around 1.5GB and after I did the converting with SVCD2DVD the mpeg came out to be 3.3GB. It converted fine and the movie plays fine. Is 1 hour of video/audio supposed to be 3GB? It seems like it is a little high. Thanks for any help and thanks for all the help I've received so far. holl_ands 01-16-06, 08:12 PM I'm sure this sounds pretty noob but how exactly do you calculate Bitrate for streams. How does the 384 Kbps audio affect the total bitrate? Where does 16.190 Mbps video come from? What elementary calculation am I missing? Thanks in advance for the help.... You also need to multiply by 24bits/pixel (8 bits per each of three colors), which will give the RAW digital video bitrate.... Which is a huge number.....But that isn't what is transmitted. Using complicated video processing, an MPEG2 Encoder compresses the bitrate down to something much lower, to which is added the 384 kbps Dolby Digital data stream....and of course a little bit of housekeeping overhead. The compression rate on the MPEG2 Encoder can be adjusted to "fit" a wide variety of maximum bitrate constraints, including using a STATMUX to share the ATSC data stream with other SD channels and data services. FYI: Here are some typical ON-AIR and DIRECTV bitrates: http://www.widemovies.com/dfwbitrate.html and a paper on STATMUX techniques showing improvement in MPEG2/4 bitrate efficiencies: https://secure.connect.pbs.org/conferences/technology/2005/Presentations/Next.Gen.Video.Stat.Muxing.pdf and some gory details re MPEG for the ubbergeek: http://bmrc.berkeley.edu/frame/research/mpeg/mpeg2faq.html http://www.swcp.com/pcaskey/mpeg2.html http://www.mpeg.org/MPEG/index.html http://viswiz.gmd.de/DVP/Public/deliv/deliv.211/mpeg/mpeghome.htm Steve Jones 01-16-06, 08:26 PM I just installed the whole process and it works with a Moto 6412/2000 from Adelphia in Longview, WA. It can be a hassle as you cant' do that during a recording (on the dvr). Everybody else encountrering the fast forward / rewind glitch, is there a firewire port on your PC that's being used by another device? I have a external DVD & it sometimes has trouble & I'm thinking maybe it is related. It's a longshot. I'm not using firewire for anything else. I have to wonder if this isn't a problem for everyone, and many don't realize it. Has anyone used a capture device and definitely not had a slowdown in rewind speed and what is your setup (verify by rebooting your DVR and testing it)? I wonder if the meituner program isn't the culprit. It seems to be the last common link left from those who've posted problems so far, and I believe is the only software that's directly communicating with the DVR (I think the capture programs run through this). I looked at the setup information files and it was copyrighted in 2001, so possibly not fully XP-compatible. teague 01-23-06, 10:53 PM I'm not using firewire for anything else. At first I thought it was my upgrade from DCT6412 I to DCT6416 III that was the problem, but now I suspect the recent firmware upgrade to 12.27 in our cable market that is the culprit. It seems like people with DCT6412 III firmware 12.27 are also experiencing firewire capture problems so I don't think it's a 6416 vs 6412 issue anymore. blzinrasin 01-24-06, 07:02 PM Are there any drivers to make the pc a 5c compliant device docanime 01-25-06, 03:08 AM Are there any drivers to make the pc a 5c compliant device No. And the way the firmware on most of the STBs for digital cable are setup, it wouldn't make a difference. I was unsuccessful at capping the first two "24" episodes as they were each an hour shown back to back. Sometime during the recording I my PC re-booted (i'm assuming due to a BSOD). The next night I broke it up into two recordings and it worked fine. The same happened during the football game last weekend. Computer restarted sometime mid-game. My only thought is that it's having issues once the file size starts getting huge. I'd really like to record the Super Bowl in one single file but I somehow dont think its going to work. I haven't gone back and checked the status since I actually physically plugged it into my computer. Looking at the back of your 6412, is your firewire plugged into the left firwire port (as viewed from behind)? Mine works through the left port, I have not tried the right port. Also, when you plugged the firewire cable into your computer, after the New Hardware Found dialog pops up, it first shows "Unknown Device". I followed the original post's directions and pressed cancel, at which point something like "AV/C Device" shows up, from which point I followed the rest of the directions. First you need to download and install the HDTV Pump filter here: CAN'T PUT A URL, SORRY. Its the one at the DVB Portal's website. Then go into windows media player and "add" both dll files from the DVB Portal folder into wmp's plugin options (they will not show up in the list). After you do this, check and make sure you can play .ts files correctly and be able to use the transport stream search bar in the "enhancements" box and be able to click "properties." 2. NOW, download and install the ac3 filter here (I think this is the right one): CAN'T PUT A URL, SORRY. Its the one at Source Forge. 3. When you open Windows Media Encoder, setup all of your file options. Click on properties then click the plugins tab. Click the "Audio" radio button then the register button. Check the ac3 decoder and say ok. Now add it to the right box. You should be able to change the properties like PCM 16, 24, ... bit, and be able to increase the audio gain. If it gives you an "audio codec not installed" error, make sure you have PCM 16bit selected (I havn't tried the others). You should be able to make .wmv hd files with 5.1 audio with this setup. Let me know if it doesn't work. I tried a whole bunch of codecs before I tried these, so you might need a different one, but I doubt it. I can encode all my files to play on my PDA. HAVE FUN! teague 01-30-06, 10:11 PM I tried to play two .ts files that I have. The SD one worked fine. The HD 1080i one played the audio fine. The video was a very slow frame rate, so very jerky, but the individual frames looked fine. This was with Windows Media Player 10.0 on XP SP2. Both files play fine with VLC on the same system. It's a 2.8Ghz P4 with 512Mb. Task manager showed only 40% CPU usage, so I don't think is a speed problem. I'll try some other files shortly. Neat that someone found a way to play .ts files with media player. Chris naps1saps 01-31-06, 01:56 PM HD works fine on my laptop. It has a (desktop) AMD 64 2ghz 2ghz FSB, 512 ddr333, and an ati 200m 128mb video card. My hdd is also an 80gb partitioned with hd playing off of the non windows partition. ALSO, I only have 1.7gb of space left on the win partition, 6gb on the other. SO, it might be that your computer has a slow processor, slow FSB, or slow hdd, or it needs another codec that I tried, or Microsoft doesn't like you! Try a defrag maybe? OR, It could be a miricle that mine works!? I can't remember if wmp played the (ts).mpg version okay? I can't remember the last time I tried that. I think I'll buy a Firewire card for my laptop and try it. Normally I wouldn't think of a laptop being good for that kind of stuff but my laptop can play back HD MPEG-2 flawlessly and my two desktops which should be much powerful don't. Also then I wouldn't have to keep moving my cable box. I'll update if it works or not. chavel 02-06-06, 09:51 PM I went ahead and installed the firewire drivers for the avc tuner as described on the first page of this thread. Although there is an exclamation point in the device driver for the tuner avc device under imaging device, the driver details reports: "AVC\SHARP&TU-GD10U-T&TYP_5&ID_0\C2674900011F0008." So it looks like the computer is seeing the tuner in the Sharp's video box. When I go to run CAPDVHS I get the dreaded No Capture Device. After searching through this thread am I running into copy protection problems of some kind or some other incompatibility issues? I'm wondering if it is possible to record from a cable card with the CAPDVHS software. racprops 02-06-06, 11:29 PM Is there any way to convert component Video to feed in on a firewire connection? (As this component is a analog and fire wire is digital I am guessing a A to D convertor is needed, and one that can handle 1080p?) Or is there some way to get component video into a computer, like say a vga input card? Both with their audio as well. And if so software to incode it as say Mpeg2/4 as it does so?? (I understand there are commurcal vga streamers but they are very costly and raw HD video would eat a lot of Hard drive space if unincoded/uncompressed.) I currenly have a Mitsubishi DLP that will receive Firewire input and will output but the output is only from the inboard TV tuners and the software to run it is a nightmare as well...TVGuild by GemStar is crap..so recording in near impossable other than "live". Deep ideas... please help. Rich racprops 02-06-06, 11:33 PM Also is there any other software like "FireBus DTV Recorder by Vividlogic"?? I have not been impressed with their software not their service. Rich indirect 02-07-06, 02:30 AM Is there any way to convert component Video to feed in on a firewire connection? I think a company called Black Magic makes boards that will capture hi-def component signals but they are really expensive. Direct firewire is the only cheap way we know of. racprops 02-07-06, 08:12 AM But component video is the only way to record ANY thing, they are blocking all digital outputs. (Some will allow "record once") Plus if I can record thus I can then let my Cox box do the recording and then copy it to my computer when I have time. At this point, movies on my Cox box should not really mater, after all everyone has these movies as they are on cable, plus I have paid for the DVR and am allowed to record them. The problem is IF the box fails I lose all recordings, even moving the Hard Drive to a new box wipes all data when rebooted in the new box. Rich scoombs 02-07-06, 08:54 AM Also is there any other software like "FireBus DTV Recorder by Vividlogic"?? I have not been impressed with their software not their service. Rich I am with you...I wish there was a working version of this application, as it would accomplish exactly what I am looking to do. Heck, I would be willing to pay $499 rather than the asking $99 if it would give me a stable, functional application. This app has such promise, it is just not reliable. I have tried the method outlined in the first post of this thread, and had no luck, but I assume it is because I have a Mitsubishi with integrated QAM tuner as discussed by bdraw... Not sure what the problem is but I can tell you that QAM recording from the integrated tuner does not work. Can't remember why but I do remember that it is not supported by Mitsu. Recording OTA from the integrated tuner on a Mits is what I used to write the original post. jimre 02-07-06, 11:48 AM But component video is the only way to record ANY thing, they are blocking all digital outputs. Recording HD component video is very expensive, and until about a year ago was possible only with $20K broadcast studio equipment. Even today, you can get a Blackmagic Designs DeckLink capture care for around $1K as the previous poster said, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. See this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6706217&&#post6706217) for details on what this will REALLY cost. racprops 02-07-06, 07:02 PM How about a way to crack the incoding on the cable HD channels?? I have the ATI HD Wonder Card that will decode and record Off the Air HD. So IF it could "see" the cable channels it could record them. So IF it could "see" the cable channels it could record them. Rich That card does NOT decode anything. It simply receives the already compressed over the air digital signal and passes it on so you can record it or send it to an MPEG-2 demultiplexor and audio/video decoders to watch - and this has absolutely nothing to do with encryption. But there is no hardware decoding on the card - you would need something like an accessDTV or MyHD card to decode the HD broadcast on the card (and again, there's no encryption or decryption involved). racprops 02-07-06, 09:26 PM I have the HDTV Wonder card, it DOES do HD. It does play back and record over the air 1080I broadcasts. So what is the differance between OTA HD and Cable HD? And what is cox cable doing to block my HD Cable ready TV (without a Cable Card) and the ATI Card from viewing the Digital channels on the cable?? Rich chicagogeek 02-07-06, 09:44 PM ***Nevermind...cable box is toast, today it was resetting itself when I was on HD channels. Called Comcast and they reset it remotely, now it won't even come back on at all. They said it was pretty common that these boxes are dying and they are replacing a lot of them. I'm having problems getting a computer to recognize my 6200. It has the 8.14 Firmware now, when I had used it before succesfully, it was on 7. something. I have tried three different computers now and two different Firewire cables. All three computers will recognize a firewire hard drive, but absolutely nothing happens when I connect to the 6200. Status shows: 1394 I/O Device: INST Active Ports: 1 Data Xmission: YES 5C Implementation: 0 Loop Status: NO Root Status: NO Cycle Master Status: NO This box has locked up on me three times in the past week so I have been planning to call comcast about a replacement. ANy suggestions before I go down that route? It was so easy the first time. I wanted to record Conan in HD tonight, guess I shouldn't have waited to the last minute. bdraw 02-07-06, 10:38 PM After you install the msi, all you should have to do is go into device manager and "update" the driver. Windows should find the new driver automatically. |
