Now I get it, I wasn't quite sure what you ment. There wouldn't be any point to use it because the update checks the version on the unit. If the firmware on the unit is current or newer than that of the disc, then the recovery portion of the disc run which basically resets the unit. If the update is newer than the player, then the update portion of the disc will run.

Sango: This is strange. So Panny does not document their updates? Why would they do so? Beats me. Do they ever release these firmware to public? If they, would they not have to tell them the reason they want them to upgrade?

Sango
11-18-04, 10:54 PM
mallu2u:

No idea why they don't document lol! We need a note taker!! They have not related any firmwares to the public.

The answer to the 3rd question, hard to say. I had to ask if they had one when I was at the Panasonic Factory Service Center and they answered to me, yes!! However I had to pay for the service to be done =( !! Since my unit was repaired by them, the updated during the repair..

That's before I made my discoveries later!

Hi andein:

The 045 is the original for the RP56. The site clearly indicates what format the it is. Using the correct image with the correct program it will work, otherwise no guarentee.

000 PBC PLAY
I don't know what you're doing but it's still wrong because it’s playing as a VCD. Other people have given up because they insist they did it right when they in fact did it wrong and several members including myself told them how to do it.

If done correctly, the unit should start reading the disc, reset the player then ask you for updating.

A way to test after the burn is to put this on your DVD-ROM and play it for yourself using a DVD player program and you'll get a message saying that it isn't applicable for the update. Another way is using Daemon tools to emulate the image on the HD and use the DVD player program.

Sango , I put the cd in my dvd writer and it does tell me that it isn't applicable for the update , but when i put it in the 56 with progressive scan on or off i get nothing. I looked at the winrar iso file and it says the header is corrupt ! i do have two file folders on the disk , one is TS Video , the other is MEI_DVDP and a windows file DVDpupdt.frm. It says the burn is good . Thx

11-20-04, 05:39 PM
andein,

What burning program are you using? I have a feeling something is corrupted due to the header can causing the PBC to come up.

I would say, burn it this way. Delete the ISO image and download the NRG image. Use Nero to burn it and it should work out for you.

Let me know what goes on from there.

Sango

andein
11-20-04, 10:13 PM
Sango , I am using Nero , i deleted the Iso version , then downloaded the NRG version and yes i am using nero 5.5 but it keeps telling me that the nrg.rar header is still bad. Could the download file be bad? Andein

Sango
11-20-04, 10:36 PM
andein:

I doubt that the file is bad because when the files were put up on the site(Kevins) I downloaded them and they worked.

The suspicion I have is what WinRAR version are you using? The version used to create the RAR file is version 3.30. If you are using an earlier version, that will probably explain why it's messing up. You can also use 3.40 as well which should be fine.

If things still are wrong, I'll see if I can send the NRG directly to you online using AIM/ICQ/MSN if you have any of them.

Sango
11-21-04, 12:04 AM
I'll have to speak with Kevin about that since it's his site. The RARed Nero image in my computer works with WinRar 3.40 since I checked. I just now recreated my RARs - this time with a recovery record of 2%.

Also download the Nero 6 as well since my image is made using that as well - didn't hear any problems but I say go with it.

Those two chats are fine. Just provide me the info in the private message and I'll get it up up.

Emailing won't work since the file is too big for that.

Sango: How can one find the firmware version for S97?

Sango
11-21-04, 02:16 AM
You gotta know the part number of the disc which the firmware is on. However, Panasonic will only give them out to techs.

For now, it's unknown at this point if the firmware exists yet because Panasonic US doesn't have all the information from Panasonic Japan.

Help!
Ok I'm new at this. I have a panasonic dvd-f65 70P325/71M266. I downloaded the firmware to upgrade it. As soon as the cd was put into the player it reads it and then resets itself and says update completed. THis is all done in 30 seconds and afterwards I have no visible signs that my player was updated. I recheck the firmware number and it is still the same as it was. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks.

Sango

If the unit is already up to date, the update porition will not run and it basically resets the unit.

The official documentation doesn't list the HT95 so there is no spport. To find one, you gotta ask Panasonic.

Hi, I have a xp30, and want to modify this player to play Pal dvd. Can anybody tell me how to do this? and where to do this? and if it will give a satisfactory result? I saw one of the member here (named Fleaman) had his xp30 modded for $60 (added a chip or something like that). I tried to contact him through email for information, but never recieve his replay. It would be great if I can have this player also play some of my dvd.

Hi

My RV36 player is a bit old with firmware 040 on that, it's a europe version PAL and NTSC enabled originally bought region free.

I've received a couple of DVD+R disks without menu on them. A friend told me that his unit can play similar discs without any problems although I forgot to ask him about his player brand and model number. I wonder if this old firmware doesn't support new disc types on my player.

I'd also like to know if my player will remain region free after upgrading it's firmware to a new version.

Regards.

Sango,

Make sure you let Panasonic know they need to fix the "Incorrect Progressive Flag" issue in Auto2 mode on the S97. None of the other players that use the FL2310 have this problem, so this should be a simple firmware fix. View the Secrets test of the player if you are not sure what I am talking about. The 3-2 Cadence, Video Flag test doesn't actually fail in Auto1 or Auto2 mode as Secrets reported......I tested this on my player and compared with my XP30 to verify. I think Kris Deering is going to retest this in the near future.

Hey Guys, I own a DVD-1600 with firmware dateing back to 025.....I made my donation to firwareupdate and downloaded the update.

I emailed Kevin with no response........obviously I dont have the right firmware for my player........can anyone send me a link to get that correct firmware or tell me how I can get it from anyone willing to send it to me....

Thanks, I appreciate any help anyone can give.

Thanks Sango, it worked for me too. I noticed right off that the menus are switching faster. It's late, so I'll have to play with it some more tonight. I found a program called Gumby for Mac OS X that converted the Nero nrg file to an ISO one that I burned and used. It shows the new version 068 is loaded now.

Sango,

I have a CP-67 player and had simailar experience to what Vgamer4550 described.

After running the disc and accepting the prompt to upgrade, the process ran and the unit reset. It did not immediately go the the done screen; however after running the update disc again it went to the done screen.

The unit still displays the firmware version as 032. Is this correct? I was expecting 073.

Does anyone know if these newer firmwares fix some of the problems with the RP56u that were pointed out in the Secrets review way back? There weren't many differences between this and the RP82 as far as progressive performance. If they fixed some of the issues, then the RP56 would be as almost as good as the highly sought after RP82, except for the DVD-A. Am I right in thinking this?

I've done the Update on my Denon 1600 (european model). All worked perfectly. It takes app. 5 min to do the update.

Firmwarelevel
before: V100 50S027
after: V100 50S050

After ther update I had to reset the player to its default, because the region code was not set properly.
But configuring the settings to my needs was done very quickly.
BTW I've found no entry for PROGRESSIVE. Should the player have such feature?

Why I did the update?
I burned a DVD+R from RIDATA (4x) and a DVD+RW from Memorex (4x) and the Denon 1600 could not play them.
After the Update the 1600'er CAN read them.
I should test if mini-DVD also work now, ... but who needs them anymore if DVDs are getting cheaper an cheaper.

Very good player the 1600'er!

Seems very good! I thought you took a risk going in blind but just now recalled the US model has the differnet nubmering as 068 which which tricked me a bit! =)

I have a Panasonic SA-HT700 (North American) system. It is not listed in the upgrade list but it is close to some of them (HA-HT700 and another. Is there an upgrade for it?

Also, the hint to get the version number doesn't seem to work for me - or I'm just being lame and doing it wrong :-)

I tried hitting pause and open drawer at the same time while pushing 7 on the remote. The drawer just opened :-) Any more hints?

If there is an upgrade, does it allow the device to play MP3's off of DVD-R?

Cheers,
Steve

Sango
01-30-05, 03:47 PM
Just pause an hold, doesn't exactly have to be at teh same time.

I just hold pause first, open, followed by 7. Unless teh SA-HT700 doesn't have that option then that' a differnet story.

The only way to find out is to ask Panasonic about that.

No DVD MP3 support as I know of so far. Same goes for the S97.

Uhoh. I tried to update my Panasonic RV32 DVD player and I ended up with "F893" showing on the DVD. Nothing else. No image. No control. Nothing.

My starting firmware was B404. I downloaded the nero image firmware updater from firmwareupdate.us, burned the image to a CD at 4x speed, popped it into the DVD, Answered yes to the question, and got the "Please wait while updating". This went on for a few minutes after which the player restarted.
At this point, however, instead of getting a "completed screen" I got a black screen on the TV and "F893" on the DVD.
Now I have no control over the DVD. I can't even eject the CD out. I've tried the "initialize" and "reset" commands but though they briefly make an appearance, nothing changes.
After a while the DVD just shuts off. When I power it back on, it will briefly give me a Welcome but then it be overcome by the F893 message.

What happened? What do I do? Do I have any recourse here??

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

Error "F893"- is anybody going to comment?
As it stands, the upgrade from firmwareupdate.us killed my Panasonic RV32. I think Sango is the original distributor of the upgrade. Sango, can you advise anything?! At the very least, could you just let me know that I should throw the DVD player in the garbage? What happened? I followed the instructions to the letter. I know that there was a clear warning at the top but I haven't found any examples on the net of people complaining about the upgrade killing the DVD player. Am I the first?!

delenca:

Error F893 is "FROM Falsification" from the SVC Manual - Basically the unit dead. I'm not sure what happened and might of been several factors which could of caused it to have a bad upgrade (bad burn, disc, write method, etc...). Unforunately you are the first one who has gotten a bad upgrade.

Yes, the people who have updated their players (that includes RV32 owners) had success. There has been one complaint but that was an issue where the update was done on a European model where it changed the unit (which is PAL) to the NTSC model for the North America.

My advise is to throw it away and look at another Panasonic model (technically it can be repaired but the price isn't worth it). If you're not willing to spend too much, you can look at the RP56 which is a nice step up because it's got Faroudja and the design of the unit looks similar to to the RV32.

I've seen them on Ebay a few days ago but for sure they'll be auctions there again.

Hi Sango,

Thanks for the reply. Sucks to hear that I killed my DVD player on an unnecessary fimrware upgrade - I wanted to be able to read Verbatim DVD+R burned at 8X. On videohelp.com several people reported that the firmware upgrade fixed the RV32's inability to read 8X Verbatim DVDs. Alas, nobody reported ending up with a fried DVD player... I guess I'm going to have to be the first one to report it... :-( Now, since I followed all the directions, I'm assuming the disaster is related to some random event - like the CD skipping or something during the firmware upgrade. Perhaps, I should have selected "check media/data" after burning? Would an upgrade through something like a connected computer be a more reliable way to do this procedure?

Right now I'm too depressed to consider "upgrading" the DVD player. I'll probably do the opposite - buy a bare-bones DVD player from walmart instead. Sucks.

Meanwhile, what do I do with the RV32? Is it worth selling it on Ebay "AS IS", "for parts"?

And, for closure:
Official RIP report - Specs of the firmware upgrade disaster:
Panasonic RV32, firmware B404
Firmware upgrade from firmwareupgrade.us.
File: Panasonic DVD Firmware Update 200405.nrg
Burned on CD media at 4x speed (lowest allowed) by Nero 6.6.0.5 on a Sony DVDRW DRU-530A burner. Did NOT select "check media after burning" or equivalent.
Followed instructions for firmware upgrade, player restarted with "F893", which means, "DVD player is dead, garbage".
As far as I know, this is the first reported example of a dead player due to this particular firmware upgrade. Be careful.

Yes, I made sure. It was NOT multi-session.

Out of curiosity - do you know what happens if one sends this out for repair? What would they do? Just replace the chip? (or do they have some way to remote control the player and reinstall the firmware?

I believe they could do one of two things. They could replace the EPROM, however Ibut 'm uncertain.

If they need to replace the whole board then it's over $100.

In both cases, the labor would exceed the cost of getting another player or model.

Sango,
Since you own, or have owned, several Panasonic DVD players, I would like your thoughts on something.......I currently have a RP91, and I am thinking about either purchasing a XP30 or a S97 to replace it. Would say that the XP30 or S97 delivers a better picture (progressive) than the RP91? And to what degree: about the same, slightly better, or much better?

Sango
02-15-05, 06:45 PM
Both the XP30 and S97 is going to deliver a much better picture in gerneral because it's using the Faroudja chip while the RP91 doesn't use it.

I would think that you will be happier with an XP30 since it doesn't have the MB errors which the S97 so it'll be a considerate move. You could go with the S97 if you wish if you can withstand MB and want to take advatanges of the scaling features which the FLI2310 provide.

Sango,

I have a RP62S with firmware 057. Can you tell me what improvements I will see by updating to the latest firmware 073. I presently have it connected to a Syntax LT32HV LCD with Component 480P. The picture looks great, but this is my first HDTV.

The only issue that I see is when the DVD playing has an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 I get the following message &"The software has a 4:3 aspect" Even thought the RP62S is set to a 16:1 aspect ratio.

The 2.35:1 aspect ratio is wider, thin black bars appear on top and bottom of the screen which is necessary to maintain the proper composition. The picture still looks great at 480P.

Looking to eventually upgrade to S97, can't wait to see what the PQ will be when I upgrade to S97.

Thanks

Hi vison:

The message reguaridng the 4:3 aspect is normal under the 16:9 mode because the at part of the video is in 4:3. This can also be confirmed by playing the DVD (same video scene) on the computer.

I don't have the RP62 so can't really comment what is updated. I do believe owners said that it improved the color rending, sharpness and media support thou.

Ok, I came across this thread and tried it on my Panny CP67 5 disc changer.

At first I thought the firmware didn't take, as even after reseting the unit, it displayed the 032 firmware code. Then I set all my settings back to what it was, and tried some discs. What I noticed first was...the tray was quieter when the disc was loading. The disc exchange feature was quicker and quieter( or sounds "smoother" as the only way to describe it). I rechecked the firmware and woohoo!! It did update to the new firmware. I especially noticed the "quick replay" button now responds much faster...before, when you pressed it, the player would sorta take almost 2 seconds to go back 10 secs...now it's nearly instant.

I noticed anything having with the player having to change tracks/chapters on CD's/DVD's are much quicker and...how shall I say...sounds quieter and smoother?

Picture quality does seem a lil better, but it always looked great...hard to tell because I'm half asleep:D. I'll play around more tomorrow. This update is like magic!! Thanks!!!!!!!!

I have Panasonic RV32, the american version. Everytime i play dvd-r disks-, the playback is jerky and has slight delay, it sort of freezes every second throughout the movie. The discs play fine on my computer. Will this sovle my problems, has anyone applied this fmw update on rv32, what did it change, any compatiblity issues solved? i read that one users rv32 got messed up and he threw it out the garbage after the fmw was applied. Is this widespread?

My RV32 upgrade fortunately went without a hitch. The only thing I noticed was the unit was a tad more responsive. Can't comment on compatibility.

I am willing to upgrade my parent's RV32. I was just worried due to failing of another member.
Even if it breaks I practically stole mine NEW at $25.
I would just get them a new universal player.

Does your player make a loud whirring noise upon startup? It is really loud compared to Sony's from the same generation which had their own optical assembly issues. I am assuming it's ready to go anyway.

True you do know the risk since this is firmware.

A member did PM me reguarding an image which was obtained from the net and said it wasn't working (didn't ruin the unit). However upon the description of how the image is, it indicated that it wasnt my distribution.

I've spoken with Kevin(of the FW soite) saids the server is fine with the donations helping out. Even a dollar is good enough for him.

Okay, donated some cash and updated my firmware on my DVD-CV51. Can't really notice any changes, but it updated just fine.

The only difference between my update and what's posted on the website is that I never received a "Completed" message.

Sango

It depends on what you're watching. I think some CV51 did post noticable differneces but it's probably in the post somehwere.

If the update was done on the Faroudja based units, it's significant.

Sango, whenever I play dvd-r discs in my rv32 us version, there is so much pixelation, the movie doesnt play smoothly, it sort of plays with a tiny delay, maybe 1/10th of a second throughout the whole movie. will this fw update help?

Sango
03-13-05, 01:34 PM
The update should help out.

The playability is still dependent on the the kind of disc, how good is the burn(settings too) and the burner as well.

03-13-05, 08:26 PM
I updated my RV32 the other day to the newer firmware and it did nothing to improve the decidedly awful DVD-R/DVD+R compatibility. My player plays Fuji DVD+R discs fine until the end of the movie (roughly the 1hr 40 minute mark) before it starts skipping and pixellating. It will not play any DVD-R disc that i've burned at all, without pixellation every few seconds. All the same discs play fine in other models of DVD player that i've tried. Yet the Panny RV32 plays commercial DVD movies and mp3's admirably.

Interesting that the box touts it's DVD-R 4.7 "compatibility".

Anyway, this firmware is legit and the update disk works, it just didn't help with media compatibility for my RV32.

Need help on updating firmware on RP82.

I downloaded the upgrade file in the first post after donating some $. First tried the Nero file which downloads as Panasonic DVD Firmware Update 200405. Nero as a zip file. I have Nero 6, and tried to unzip this file and otherwise open it, but it would not unzip nor open

Next. I tried downloading the other file which downloads as Panasonic DVD Firmware Update 200405. ISO. This file unzipped OK as Panasonic DVD Firmware Update 200405.ISO size: 148,039,680. Burned this file to a CD-R. Appears to be a good burn, as it shows on the CD as Panasonic DVD Firmware Update 200405.ISO.

After inserting this disk in the RP82, I get a "no play" error saying this type of disk does not work. I repeated the process using a different burner, got the same file which again appeared to be good, but got the same error message in the RP82.

By the way, my firmware version is now 272. Any ideas what might be happening here and why I am not successful.

Thanks much!

Sounds like you did exactly like I did my first try. You copied the iso file as a data file instead of an IMAGE. Choose "Burn Image to Disk" option on Nero 6. It will then have multiple files on the CD which will work. Sango discovered my same mistake.

thomasgs, also on the update link page you visited (shown below), on that page it shows the correct three files which should be on your CD after an IMAGE burn. It is the second computer screen image shown. Hope this helps.

:( Apparently I have Nero 6 OEM that came with a Memorex DVD drive, and while it has almost every module, it lacks the Nero Burning Rom program. That's why I was only able to create a data disk and couldn't figure out how to properly burn this image. (see recent post)

Any ideas on how I can get the three files that the ISO file breaks into and if then I could use them to create a data disk? Or, is anyone able to provide me a burned disk with the ISO image file (costs paid, of course)?

Thanks much

thomasgs, Nero OEM should still include Nero Express 6 (I have OEM Suite which includes Nero Express 6). "Disk Image or Saved Project" will be one of the selections in Nero Express.

Or, if you have "Nero StartSmart", Burn Image will be under "Copy and Backup".

If you don't, PM me and I will help you.

Sango,

Quick question. I finally replaced the spindle motor in my Denon 1600 tonight and got it going (yay!). The firmware in it is "V100 502054". Isn't this the latest? I thought I saw in here where someone recently updated their 1600 with the firmware update disc and they were updated from 502027 to 502050. Do I have some mysterious newer firmware? I got this player off of EBay for next to nothing and repaired it.

EDIT: Sango, thanks. I have discovered that 068 is the latest firmware. The only problem is that I cannot get my 1600 to read CD's now. It reads DVD's just fine. It can't even read pressed music CD's. Anyone else had this problem with a RP82/62/Denon 1600?

flyingvee
03-29-05, 04:19 PM
BrettV, LiteUP!, or anyone else. where did you get the 1600 firmware? I went to the site listed in the first post, and saw nothing at all for the Denon. figured firmware is specific enough, I don't want to try flashing with the wrong one. I'm having problems with the progressive out on my 1600 now, hoping and assuming the firmware will fix that.

Sango
03-29-05, 10:36 PM
The Denon 1600 firmware isn't listed because the units listed is for the current disc. The previous disc is the one with the Denon 1600.

The previous disc list information was also on the forums when I first created the thread and was removed with the release of the current disc.

Hello all, I stumbled on this yesterday and didn't know an update was possible on my Panasonic DVD-CV36. I went to the firware site and downloaded the update, burned it to cd-r and updated the firmware on my player. The firmware now matches that on the site. My question: what does this do for me? My motivation was to enable the player to play a DVD-RW I created (A personal slide show). Alas, it still won't play. I'm not very fond of the CV36, and I suspect I will never be able to play the Imation RW, but am I wrong?. The RW plays well on a Samsung Progressive scan model. Thanks in advance.

Rodion,

Nobody knows what issues are addressed and features added to the firmware. Some people notice great things, others notice nothing.

Sango
04-01-05, 01:56 AM
Sort of true since Panasonic has a thing of not documenting of what the changes are.

For some of the common units, a lot of people have comments because the changes were noticable. For the other units, the comment varies and even none because we don't have those units.

The DVD player automatically selects the right version for you so the unit will be updating to 45C399 in this case.

What am I doing wrong?

Joe_M
04-07-05, 08:53 AM
If it's in an ISO file you don't just copy the file over to the CD as is. In NERO select File > Open (or burn image file depending on version). Change the file type drop down to *.ISO or All Supported Image Files (something like that). Browse to your ISO file and open it. That should take you right to the burn dialog. Burn the image. That should do it.

I have Nero burning rom.

Just double click on the iso from my computer. This will automatically launch Nero. Then burn according to the website.

Nero Express is a cut down version of Nero Burning Rom.

I also notice your version is behind so you might consider downloading the latest.

sorry for the double post!

Just downloaded the Nero version of the firmware update for Panasonic DVD players - mine is listed: DVD-CV37. Burned the disc no problem, loaded it to the #1 position, was rewarded with "This player needs the update" and selected "yes". Update proceeded with no apparent problems, unit reset itself, but I did not get the "completed" message - just the black screen with the blue DVD logo. However, when I check the firmware version, it sill shows as "032". Did the re-initialization, but could not get "reset" to appear. The manual shows that reset is accomplished by powering off and unplugging - did this, with the same results. The unit plays fine (still doesn't play DVD-R discs, however - my reason for upgrading), so no damage done - but is there some other trick for getting the unit to see the new firmware?

I did load the CD-R with the firmware image on it again to see if I could get it to "take" on a second try, and this time did NOT get the "this unit needs the update" message - just the reset that implies it already has the newest version firmware...

Help? And thanks for all the effort!

I need your help. I followed the instructions and downloaded the ISO file and burned the contents to a CD-R with the proper disc name, but when I inserted the CD-R in the Panasonic RV32 the following error message appeared. "This type of disc cannot be played. Please insert a different disc." Any thoughts? I used an iBook to burn the disc.

****************** After originally posting this message I continued searching the thread and found something that was obscure, but important. The CD-R should not be burned on a Mac. I don't know why, but when I burned in on a PC it worked. BTW, the RV32 still would not play DVD-R burned with the iBook's built in burning software, but it did play one burned with Dragon Burn for Mac. Go figure...

I just had my rp82 H02 problem fixed - $68 and lens and mechanism cleaned. Luckily. :o)

Just took back the Pioneer 578AS ($136 incl tax at CircuitCity.com) that I was going to replace it with - picture looked kind of flat and 2D compared to the Panny so sticking with that.

I just read most of the thread here, and have a couple of questions that I don't see answers to yet:

1) How do I find out the firmware version of the RP82, together with number of hours? I tried the latter a while ago but saw a 4 digit number like 3400 or something, which seemed nuts.

2) What exactly is a layer change and how do you spot it? Example scenes in specific movies? The only problem I have withthe rp82 is menu reposne time being abit sluggish - the Pioneer was much better.

You can notice a layer change because the movie will visibly stutter. If it doesn't you have a player that is better than mine :)

The good movies have changes in between scenes where it's less noticeable, but some just kind of throw them in there wherever.

DrJoe
04-21-05, 08:35 PM
In order for a full movie to fit on a dvd, it is required to save the audio/video data in two layers -- think of it like to stacked phonograph albums. When the movie gets to the end of the first layer it needs to switch focus from the layer it is on and change to the second layer. This is usually in the middle of the movie. You will noticed a stutter in the video when this happens. It can be a fraction of a second to almost two seconds.

Where does one obtain service disk #2. I called Panasonic CS and they emailed me: "that unit only plays zone 1 discs." Duh.

Okay, update: Panasonic Support left a voice message saying they had two "service discs" for the RP-56

1 - Test Disc, part no. DVDT-S15A @ $108
2 - Recovery Disc, part no. RFKZD03R005 @ $13.12

Neither sounds like SV#2, but does anyone know?

Firmware updates contain bug fixes and such in the original code, it does not make your player regions free. It helps by fixing errors in the original code, sort of like a service pack or a hotfix does for a windows PC. It does not give you the ability to play other region dvd's.

Just upgraded my RP-56 firmware. So far, so good. One question, has anyone noticed more vibration from the player since the firmware upgrade? I wasn't paying much attention to it before, so I honestly don't know if there is a difference, but it does seem to vibrate quite a bit now (somewhat like a Lite-On CD-ROM drive). Anyone else notice this?

I've updated the firmware in my RV32 player without any problems.

I am planning on getting a Panasonic DMR-ES10 DVD recorder later this year. The intention is to use the DVD recorder to record some racing shown in the offseason, remove the commercials, and then burn the shows onto a DVD-R.

In order to do that, I need a DVD player that is able to play DVD-RAM discs, but don't want to buy another DVD player when I already have two that are working fine.

Does anyone know if the ability to read DVD-RAM discs was added with this firmware update?

I am also looking for a firmware update for my old panny rv31. Where can I get it? I even donated $1 to FirmwareUpdate.us to help offset the hosting costs :)
The firmware update hosted at FirmwareUpdate.us will update the RV-31.

I've updated 2 RV-31 DVD players with it, as well as an RV-32 unit.

Wow! Panasonic is so great about the firmware updates you think they would be open to producing a player that is far superior to the rp82 and xp30.
Something like the S97 but with a HQV chip and and a Mediatek mpeg decoder!
wouldn't that be a hot seller!

Daemon tools to mount iso burned with nero.

One thing I noticed is that the actual tray that loads the disk is faster in and out.
Also the color is more saturated

Is there any way to get my RP82 to play DVD+R DL disks? I just bought 30 of them only to find that the first movie I burned wouldn't play! D'oh!

I'm using Nero 6.x with a NEC drive. The burn was fine and it plays fine in my Media Center PC just not on my RP82 (I did a dumb thing and assumed it would play since it plays DVD-RAM I figured it would play anything!)

Thanks,

I have just boguht a region free SDI modded RP82, it has firmware 65D298 and I was wondering if the firmware update will improve PQ when using SDI or if its only for the "original" outputs.

@Sango:
Did you do the JVL mod or you had it done by them? if it was you, is it easy to do?

Sango
10-26-05, 03:54 PM
The will improve over SDI as well.

I have a JVB of theirs for region/macrovision free which I put on myself. It's a bit difficult to do because the solder points are small and needs precision.

I assume your SDI/region free is a JVB mod - if so then I assume the region mod chip is there too. In that case, then the original firmware update will not work(you'll lose regions) and will need to put the modified one on there in place.

I agree. I've done a lot of soldering over the years, but soldering the JVB chip into the RP-82 is a challenge. I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself unless you've done some small circuit board work in the past.

Thanks to both for your answers.
I got this player 2nd hand and it is certainly region free as it was originally R3 and I can play R2 discs without a problem, but I have no idea how it was made region free, unless you have a picture of the chip installed in this player I wouldn't know where and what to look for. I will consider having it chipped if the improvements were really worth the expense of sending it to JVB because the cost is quite high at nearly 280€ (330$), even doing it myself will cost 106€ (125$).
My RP82 was SDI (PMS Kit) modded in the UK by crtprojectors.co.uk, this one is the only I know for sure.

Sango
10-27-05, 01:35 PM
Yup, I do have a picture of the chip for the JVB mod. Notice the chip with wires on top of the daughter board. The JVB mod chip for the RP82 is $64 for DYI while having them do it is $114.

Sango it'll be that price if I was in the US but I'm in EU and then I'm not in NL. where JVL is located over here, so my price with shipping and dearest VAT (19%) is the one I posted.
From the picture it doesn't seem too difficult to do, I have a friend who is quite good at soldering who could help me with this.
I have only tried one brand of DVD+R DL (crappy Philips 2.4x) and it seems the RP82 is not too keen on them.
Thx again.

PS - the 262 update disc(s) i have are from the firmwareupdate.us site you linked to..i don't think there's anything wrong with the multiple discs i burned (tried different burning options, now i have several discs that are recognized as 262 updates but the player won't let it "take").

Update:

I managed to look up some old email which had the list of firmware on the old disc, it does have RP62 so you don't have to worry about which disc you have.

I have a DVD CV51 and I think I misunderstood the chart at firmwareupdate.us. Since I bought my unit in Dec 01 and the latest update image was from 04 I assumed the chart showed an original firmware known to be compatible with the update disc. My player says "CO15 45K113" when I ask it for the current version. The chart shows 45K103 for the CV51. The alternative is that the chart shows the version included in the update and I somehow have a newer version, one that nobody else has reported having in four years?

Not exact but close so I tossed a couple bux and downloaded it. Burned with "cdrecord speed=4 -dao 'Panasonic DVD Firmware Update 200405.iso'" to a fairly medium grade Maxell blank. Mounting the burned cd on my workstation looks like the good one shown. When I put it in the player the progress dots go across the display, then the screen briefly flashes and it returns to stop mode. No message about wanting to update or about already having a newer firmware.

Sango
12-03-05, 02:37 AM
Looks like yours is current. From what it sounded like, your DVD player just reset itself because the unit is already up to date.

jmorris42
12-03-05, 11:29 AM
Looks like yours is current.

Ok, I figured some sort of message would inform that it the installed firmware was newer. Too bad there isn't any way I can save out my firmware and share it though, since it appears to be newer.

I was really hoping there was a newer version available for my unit though. While I generally like my player, it has one really annoying bug. Most of the time sending a discrete OFF works, but sometimes it says "Bye" and locks up hard until the cord is pulled.

And to contribute something I haven't seen online yet, I have been poking around and have found out some things about this unit. I walked the remote codes and found two that aren't documented anywhere else.

OFA EFC Real CODE RESULT
145 241 Reset to defaults "All Set" on screen for a second.
143 242 Enter Service mode

Without a service manual I didn't linger long but here is what found. The display says "FT 0?", chapter forward and back change the number represented by ?. All normal displays like "reading" "play" etc are moved way down the screen, perhaps to make room for service mode status displays? Pressing cancel on the remote exits.

For those who don't know, any universal remote that uses the One For All product codes can send any IR code, Google for details. Would be really interesting if the same code knocked the secret "Service Mode" knock on all Panasonic DVD players.

Saw many references on Google searching to a Panasonic "Service Remote" but it seems nobody bothered to go looking for the way around that. Wondering if there is anything I can do with service mode that would be worth finding a service manual?

Sango
12-03-05, 03:00 PM
From what I've read, the "All Set" is the "Reset" on some of the Panasonic models, different words. The FT is the factory modes which can be changed from 1 to 3. The service manual does not document this.

If there is a factory remote, it's most likely kept in internal hands.

Will a panasonic s35 play DVD +R DL after this firmware upgrade -- any experiences?

@msim,
I have an RP82 which is even older than your S35 and it is also very picky with DL, so far I found that using Verbatim media with ImgTools Classic + Imgburn or DVDDec I have no problems whatsoever. Avoid nero for DL's, it makes non compliant discs.
Also an update will probably improve media reading but you'll loose MR if your player has this capability.
Cheers.

I'm having trouble updating the firmware on my XP30. I keep getting the "This type of disc cannot be played" message.

The current firmware version of my XP30 player is "V005 65H280" and I'm trying to update it to 65H302 with the ISO on the
"Firmware update for North American Panasonic DVD players" web site. (Can't put URL because of SPAM rules that required at least 5 posts.)

I downloaded the "Panasonic DVD Firmware Update 200405 ISO.zip" and unzipped it to: "Panasonic DVD Firmware Update 200405.iso". Then I burnt the iso a couple of ways, DAO and RAW96R using cdrecord on Linux. I can read the CD fine with the computer after the burn. Hello.
I will explain for you to understand well: I have a Panasonic DVD-ra61 I bought in europe 2 years ago. Now i live in Canada. My DVD was zonefree but its output in only in PAL, or I can read NTSC dvd on ntsc TV but I cannot read PAL dvd on my NTSC TV. I read in the forum that applying the firware, change the player to NTSC, so I thought it's good for me!! I upgraded the firware but not with the one on the firmwareupdate.us , I downloaded one on the donkey, the name was: MEIAVCCODSDCPDDVDPDFD000001000 .
Now my player speak French(originally) AND Japonese!!! It doesn't play any DVD, if I insert a region 1 it says this is not the good region and if I insert a region 2 it says it cannot play this type of DVD. The analog audio output does'nt work now, even with a CD, just the digital...
So I donate and downloaded the firmware 200405, but when I insert it, the DVD answer me with a Japonese message I cannot read (i don't speak jap...) and nothing happen... When I try to reset with pause-back-open then Stop, the player says "initialising ans Reset", but after, everything is still the same...
Any idea? Or will have to throw it to the trash...

(The fact is that I need a multizone DVD player that can play Pal dvd on ntsc tv and with good audio quality...)
Thanks!

Hi I just stumbled on to this thread and registered here so I can ask a few questions about this. I have a Panny XP50 that I would like to update the firmware to if possible. What is the latest build of it? The reason that I'm looking at doing this is that I burned some MP3s to a DVD-R to play on it (and listen through my AV receiver) and it said it could not read the disc, eventho it is supposed to read DVD-R disc. Hopefully there is a firmware revision to correct this.

Thanks,

jmorris42,

I updated my CV51 a while back and it worked ok. I cannot remember which firmware update I used, so I will check if mine is current. I will also check my firmware version too.

. . .

Does anybody know if it is possible to make either of a DVD F87 and/or F85 "region free" or "multi-region" "all region" or whatever you want to call it? I believe if I was able to acquire a service disc #2 I could region free my CV51 (essentially similar to the RV31). ..anyhow, if anybody knows how to make an F87 or F85 region free, that would be great.

I just realized that all of the above dvd players are NTSC only be nature, and unless found in international versions, or otherwise modified, they only play NTSC no matter the region. :(

thanx

2bigdogs,

I believe the latest firmware for the X50 is 302. I use a 10ft screen so I did noticed an improvement on the video and the layer change speed improved after updating it also. If you have a smaller screen/TV, then you really won't notice the difference. I'm on dial-up so don't ask for a copy from me. Hope that helps you out on your decision making.

Way back in 2004 I updated the firmware on my CV51 to CO15 45K103.

My F85 is 70P250 so I suppose I can upgrade it.

My F87 is 81H552. (The F87 may have been made region free so I won't bother. I am selling the F87 anyhow. Useless region-free though since it won't recognize PAL discs, if this one even is region free that is).

I am getting into a bad habit of collecting 5 disc dvd changers. I may grab a CV 52 for a friend if I can find one in good shape.

So the most up-to-date firmware files are these files when un-zipped? These are the ones I grabbed in 2004. Are they still the most recent?

MEIAVCCODSDCPDDVDPDFD000001000 - 108 MB
MEIAVCCODSDCPDDVDPDFD000001000.BWS - 4.43 MB
MEIAVCCODSDCPDDVDPDFD000001000.BWT - 1KB

Are these still the most recent?

thanx,

:)

P.S. These firmware updates are useful. The interlaced output of these players is really pretty good, so coupled with a DVDO iScan you are good to go and not need to worry about macroblocking etc.

Has anybody updated an F85? If so, did you notice any improvements?

I am curious how to get my hands on the firmware. There doesn't seem to be a link on firmwareupdate.us, and the torrent I found doesn't seem to work either.

thanks

If you go to the proper website you will see that you have to donate a little bit via PayPal and then the files will be available for you to download.

Okay..

I have an OLD pc.... I only have HP MY CD burner software, or the standard adaptec and I don't see how I can burn an "image". It only allows for data files. Of course, I burned one and it didn't come out as a good burn. After searching in this thread, I know I need to burn it as an image, but my software doesn't allow this..

So.. that being the case. Which FREE burner software can I use??

Thanks.

EDIT... picked DEEPBURNER Free version. Will try tonight. Thanks again for the firmware update.

Just did my panny F85. The update is fast and it tells you to eject the disc. No need to reset or power off or anything. Guess I will re-check the settings though.

I am not sure that the firmware upgrade is applicable to the region free models.

Has anybody updated their Panasonic CV51 or F85 and tried DVD+DL or DVD-DL recordable dvd discs?

Hello, I have a Panasonic DVD-CV51 for a number of years now and it has served me well. I frequently rent DVDs and encounter playback issues where the DVD seems to pixelate and freeze and skips...

I bought a DVD cleaner but am not sure it is even doing anything.

You guys seem to be pros at the stuff so I would like some advice here. I am a computer guy but not an electronics tech but m interested in the field.

Does the player need maintenance? Something I can do?

Also I read about the firmware update and noticed somewhere in my google searching that a user mentioned it helped him with his DVD-R playback...

Are there formats I can and cannot play? DVD+R? DVD-R?

I tried pressing PAUSE and OPEN and 7 on the remote but I get no display to view my firmware update.

Hi there, I tried this on my remote

PAUSE+OPEN simultaneously and then 7.

Nothing happens, where should the firmware display? How long do I hold these? Right order pressed?

It's probably dying. I had a CV51 for many years and it finally gave out on me in January. I didn't have the same issues as you - just a terrible grinding noise. Movies played, but the sound was distracting. I doubt a firmware update will fix pixellation on pressed DVDs - sounds like you are getting errors with reading the discs.

I attempted an update to a Panasonic DVD-S35 player. I started the upgrade process and went to a black screen with "Close" on the DVD screen. It stayed in this state for 30+ minutes. At this point I powered the unit off. It will power on and the settings are back to factory default. It will play DVDs as well. If I check the firmware version, it says: F114771B273 . This doesn't seem to be the correct firmware for this player by the list above. If I stick the firmware CD in again, it goes immedaitely (after loading the disk) to the black screen with "Close" on the DVD player. I have left it in that state a very long time (> 1 hour) and it stays there. I have tried the ISO and the NRG images both burned with Nero 6 on two different CD media. Same behavior of both. Any suggestions what might be going on? I'm glad I didn't create a brick out of it though!

Look at the "good burn, bad burn" pix again.
