I was just testing the speakers out connection on the PWD7UY
but couldn't get any sound out of the speakers.
Volume was at about 22 and no mute.
The manual seems to suggest it would only work with the designated optional speakers.
Anybody has the experience or suggestions.
Thanks

I connected a couple of cambridge soundworks cube speakers to the speaker outputs and they worked beautifully with my pwd7uy.

So no particular settings required?
Also, I was using 8 ohms speakers
I would try other speakers and see what happens.
thanks

Just be sure to use very efficient speakers.

Received mine today. Took about 2 months but it's here, excited to see how it turns out.
In case anyone is interested, the pq through s-video actually got worse with the new blade installed. There are still the same dancing lines, but now add a nice upward scrolling horizontal bar through any black screen. Very disappointing, i've had another issue with the panasonic that needs to be taken care of by them but they are impossible to deal with/contact. I'm regretting buying the panny monitor.
Hi:
Thanks guys.
Turns out that I didn't plug the wires deep enough to the connectors on the panel.
It's doing fine now.
BTW, I really enjoy the PQ of this unit.
A bargain.
IM so lost....sorry if this is redundant but the more I read the more confused I get. Heres what I want:
a)42" plasma
b)HDTV ready ( not built in I have Directv HD rec)
c) looked at the th-42phd-7uy but since im using it im my bedroom prefer builtin speakers
I looked at the 42-xvs30up & the 42px50up?? Such a wide spectrum in price I am obviously missing something.
Please advise, thanks :)

The Onyx Models (42XVS30up - 50XVS30up - 65XVS30up ) are the High-End Series from Panasonic and supposed to have better electronics. To my eyes, PQ was the same compared to the regular models. ;)
So Bruzzi, for my need of plasma TV which is best fit...sorry for the novice type questions..........it seems no need to go with thexvs....which means im left with either ohd or px......I dont want EDTV, since i have HD direct

I would get the XVS series only because of the Design. Otherwise the Commercial PH7UY or the HD 50/500U "should" have the same PQ.

If you looked at the TH-42PHD7UY and like it, but need speakers, you can always opt to add the speaker kit (Panny Part# TY-SP42P5W-K)
Thank you all . lot of help I think ill go with the 7uy & add the speakers as suggested,,,,,whats not to like :) Unless you guys tell me there a better bang for the buck on a 42" plasma I should consider ?:)
Thanks again

As much as I hate to do this...
Before buying the PHD7UY, you should read the following long thread that talk about some problems with the "7UY" series - which affect more the PHD than the others:

Bruzzi,
Thanks for the info.....I also am concerned with the 7uy any service needs would be handled as a carry in, where as the px50u would be in home.
Can you shed some light on why I am finding the px50u ( newest generation) cheaper than its predecessor px25u?? seems odd to me
thanks as always

Did you check the Service Center Locator already???

Maybe there's an Authorized Repair Center close to where you live.

It's been like that for the last couple years as the cost of production are decreasing.
So prices of Plasmas are falling down each year. Even with new features/technology.
And they'll keep going down.

All true, but it also seems fair to suggest that the PX500U is the real successor to the PX25U. The 50 series has a stripped down feature set compared to the 25's, part of the reason Panasonic could drop the MSRP so drastically.
Hi is the th-42PX50U out yet I think this is the one for me
thanks
david8613 05-06-05, 02:14 AM hi all, i was trying to get into the service menu of my pd25u with the instructions on bruzzi thread but could not, can some tell me step by how to do this, and would having a cable card in my unit make it harder to do?

david8613, there's another member using CableCARD that can't access the Service Menu. So try removing the cable card to see if It works. :)
Hi all:
I am considering using a VGA/component breakout cable connection to utilize the PC input on PWD7UY. Are there issues with it like color etc..
Thanks
Hi Guys,
Can I run a Panasonic 50inch 7th generation Plasma with DVI input using one to one pixel mapping and get it to work with PAL? I have been told that NTSC is 60hz and PAL is 50 hz and there may be a problem with this.
Thanks.

Assuming you are talking full screen at the panels native resolution 1366x768,
The short answer is no. Actually, the RGB/Component input would be a better choice for a PAL signal. The RGB/Component input accepts both PAL, and PAL60 in a variety of formats.
The DVI blade accepts only a limited number of input signals.
see attached spec from the Panasonic DVI blade manual:
Thanks for that, So what happens when I connect to the DVI input at 60Hz and then play a PAL DVD which outputs at 50Hz? Will the computer software sort it all out? Or will I get weird stuff?
This question is probably a little off topic but I have read through too many threads to keep trying to find the information I need to.
That being said....
I have heard that many of the panasonics will actually down convert 720P signals to 480P. Is this true? Does anyone know what models do not down convert? I have heard nothing but good things about the panny's except this.

Obviously, the ED sets do as that is their native resolution. ;)
Panasonic (and many other brands) convert 720p signals to 1080 prior to scaling to their native resolution (768 or 480 as the case may be).
It seems like the panasonic models that have built in HD tuner or Cable card slot woul dbe a waste for me since I have Direct TV HD which of course requires a HD reciever. WOuld you guys agree? & if so based on that info which model is best for me...thanks
GHirsch76 05-12-05, 12:42 AM I purchased and just received my TH42PWD7UY and TH42PHD7UY today. I have been working all day on trying to get a tv signal on my DVI board. My setup is as follows:
TV: TH42PHD7UY
Cable: Monster Cable DVI to HDMI
Cable Box: Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 - Uses HDMI
Ive tried two different DVI boards in slot 1 and 2. No luck. Ive gone through all the basic troubleshooting proceedures with my cable provider (Cablevision), resetting the box, triple checking connections, etc. I'm not really sure where to go from this point. Any pointers from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Are you getting anything on the DVI Input...IE white noise? Will the monitor switch to the slot that the board is installed in?
I normally leave my cable DVR on all the time.
I use the DVI board, but with a DVI-DVI connection to my DVR (CableOne, Motorola). The Motorola box, "loves" to reboot itself. (CableOne claims it is caused by a signal from them, but I'm not sure I buy their explanation).
Sometimes this happens when I'm watching TV. The screen initially freezes, and then goes blank (black). After the reboot, and I turn the Box back on, there is a short period (less than 1 second) of "white noise" while the Digital "handshake" re-occurs between the Monitor, and the Cable Box.
My box is in an enclosed cabinet, so I can't see it... but, If the box happens to be off when I first turn the monitor on, I know it is off because the monitor refuses to switch to Slot 1, (where my DVI board is).
The Monitor will not switch to an input that does not have an active signal, but it will remain on an input that the TV recognized a signal from, after it has been turned on.
This doesn't solve your problem, but it may help in troubleshooting the problem.
Also, there is a thread on this board (I can't find it right now) regarding the SA8300 and HDMI... I believe that you are not the only one who has had a similar problem.. I believe the solution was to upgrade to the SA8300HD. But a search of the forum may provide your solution.
Viper_Z 05-18-05, 12:22 AM All,
I live in an apartment and just recently bought the following items and I seriously need some advice how to set up my system:
- Panasonic TH-50PHD7UY (no speakers)
-JVC DVD Player/Receiver RX-DV31SL + Orb Audio speakers
- Time Warner basic cable package with only a coaxial socket F-type connection (with a needle in the middle).
First thing I notice is the Panny doesn't have the F-type connector, so what should I do? Can I get a cable with one end having F-type plug for the cable socket and the other end having an RCA plug for the Panny's composite video input?
But if I do the above, how do I get sounds out of my Panny? I read the Panny manual and it says do not use any other speakers except the Panny's optional package!
For my JVC player/receiver, the following input/output are available:
-4 Audio In, 2 Out
-2 Composite Video In/Out
-Component Video out
-2 S-video in/out
-2 Assignable Digtial Inputs (1 Optical, 1 Coaxial) that you can designate to any digital source
-1 Optical digital output
So, the question is, how do out get the video into the TV while at the same time send the audio to my receiver? I don't want to use the S-video because I heard it's worse than the component. Will buying a DVI or HDMI blade help (I have no idea what these are anyway, just happen to read about them!)
Thanks a million!
peg120785 05-20-05, 07:33 PM Viper:
I really think you may be better off to contact the store that sold you the Panny and get them to come over and help you set it up. If that doesn't work for you here are some ideas.
Let's talk about your receiver first. You should be able to run your coaxial cable from your Time Warner box into your receiver. This should bring your video into the receiver for viewing cable TV. Next issue is to get the video to run out of the receiver to the Panny. I would choose the video composite out option you list. On the Panny if you did not get a set of adapters that would convert the existing BNC input to an RCA connection go to Radio Shack or Best Buy and get three of them and put them on the existing BNC connectors on the Panny. You will then need a good quality RBG cable with male RCA ends to run from your receiver to the Panny. This should provide you with video for viewing TV and DVD from your receiver.
Now to audio. Doesn't your Time Warner box have a separate audio out connection? Assuming it does, choose the best one available. If it only offers a red and white RCA connection use that. If it offers digital use that. It doesn't look like HDMI is an option at the moment so don't worry about that unless you want to buy some new equipment. Just run whatever audio you intend to use (I can't tell how many speakers you have, ) into the receiver and from the receiver out to the speakers. Don't worry about the caution about not using speakers other than Panasonics, that really onlly applies if you are running your audio into the Panasonic monitor and in this case you are not, your are running audio through the receiver.
This should at least get you up and running, but if were me, I would spend some extra dough, upgrade my cable box, receiver and DVD player and make better use of the great Video you can get from the Panny. You might also want to hire someone or find a friend to come over and help you with the setup.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.

Ghirsh - I have the HD DVR model of that box for cablevision and the 50 phd7uy. The HDMI (not DVI board like you have but similiar) worked with no problems out of the box. Have you tried component (I'm guessing you have) to at least get a picture out to the TV? For what it's worth I have found the HDMI and component quality almost indistinguishable from my cable box.
Hi all,
Newb to HDTV world. I just got the 42PX50U. Read through a lot of DVD posts but in the end I am more confused than when I started. Would appreciate if you guys could recommend a DVD player that would work well with this PDP.
MY STB is connected via component inputs. TWC STB has only DVI out. Is it better for me to connect the STB with DVI/HDMI adapter or get a DVD and connect that to the HDMI port ? Would that choice become more difficult if I decide to get STB with PVR function?
When I connect my Sony DVD player via S video I have audio synch problems. But from Composite it is not an issue. Did anyone experience this with S Video ?

Viper:

To me it sounds like you are missing an NTSC tuner? I don't think Viper has a TW STB. I wouldn't think the DVD player/receiver is capable of this (although I haven't looked up this particular model). I would suggest that the easiest approach for you is to request a set top box (STB) from TW. This will perform the 'channel tuning' that you appear to be missing from your setup. I upgraded my basic Comcast package to the HD package for only $5 more a month. In order to do this the cable company needs to supply you with a STB (it's also cheaper than getting one of their digital packages, unless you want the digital channels, and you'll also get all the non premium HD channels). You can normally just go pickup a STB from their office once you have ordered it to save waiting for a tech.
Once you have the STB the hookup should be easy. The f-type coaxial connects into the STB. From the STB you have various options from best to worst (also depends on the STB):
1. DVI/HDMI output from the STB to the display, Fiber/Coaxial Digital output from STB to receiver.
2. Component output from STB to display, Analog R/L output from STB to receiver
3. S-Video output from STB to display, same audio as 2.
4. Composite output from STB to display, same audio as 2.
Hope this helps, once you get a TV tuner you should be set Viper.
Enjoy
Jstevens75 05-31-05, 05:47 PM Hi there everyone!
I am about to buy a Panasonic TH42PX50U. Here are the following things that I want to hook up to my Denon AV3300.
Panny TV
Sony PS2
Toshiba RS-TX20 Tivo DVD Burner
Philips DVDP642
Comcast Dual Tuner HDTV DVR
So I was thinking to run S-Video to one input on the TV from monitor out and Component on the other for now,
On the component I would put the Tivo and the Comcast HD DVR. (Only using comcast box alone when I want to watch HD.
On the S-Video I would put the PS2 and the Phillips DVD player.
I could buy the Denon Av3805 but all I would get would be one more component input and the ability to upconvert the input.
Any thougts or recommendations? Any thoughts about using component versus DVI/HDMI?
Thanks in advance!
J
On myPanasonic TH-50PHD7UY I have tried various combos. THe one that works best is run the Component wires from cable to TV direct. Use Fiber optic cord from cable box out to Reciever sound in. Regular video cables will not reproduce proper sound. Please tell if if i am missing something...works great.
joharrel 06-06-05, 02:06 PM A few questions...
1. Are the commercial models still supposed to be better than the consumer..especially comparing: TH-42PWD7UY and TH-42PHD7UY to the TH-42PD50U and TH-42PX50U.
2. For the models above, are the consumer ones "8th generation"?
3. Main improvements over 7th generation?
Thanks in advance!
Hi Bruzzi,
Any word on an update from Panasonic for a Th-42PHD7uy for the contrast fluctuations while watching letterboxed material using the component inputs?
I'm wondering if there's been any recent news/info on the 8UY series?
BTW, isn't it about time for someone to start the Panasonic Plasma FAQ (2005 Link)

Announcement on 8UK just came out. So far they have just announced 42" and 37" ED models.

Unfortunately Not. For that reason I simply gave up on the "7UY" Models. Going to buy either the 50PHD8UK or the Consumer TH-50PX500U.
It's been more than 4 months without a Plasma. :( :( :(
BTW, isn't it about time for someone to start the Panasonic Plasma FAQ (2004 Link)
Never mind the 2004, the link for the Panasonic FAQ is in the first post:

White Tiger 06-15-05, 07:36 AM All.
I have a Panasonic TH-42PX50U connected to a Comcast Motorola 6200 STB via a DVI to HDMI cable. I receive all standard definition material with no problem. However, when tuned to any High Definition channel, I get snow flashes on part of the screen that eventually turn into full blank screens and/or full snow constantly. If I reduce the STB resolution from 1080i or 720p to 480p for HDTV signals, the problem goes away. I have had Comcast check the signal and the box (no problems) and have changed the cable connector twice. This is only a problem with the HDMI input. All other inputs (except CableCard which I have not tried) work fine. Component high definition works fine in 720p or 1080i.
I have also been in contact with Panasonic service who now think that the problem may be the HDMI input in the display. Short of getting Panasonic to replace the HDMI input, does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be causing this problem and how I might go about fixing it?
discodave72 06-16-05, 01:37 AM I am looking at these two models and would prefer the 7UY but I have read a great deal about strobing issues on other forums. However, I searched this thread and found no matches. Can you guys let me know if this "strobing" issue has been resolved?
Thanks for reading.

BritOverseas 06-17-05, 05:58 PM I have a 37' panny ED in my bedroom and both me and the missus love it, so....
Because we are building a new house we have decided to sell our 61' DLP (any takers) and buy a 50" plasma for above the mantel (the DLP will just look wrong in front of the fireplace). To this end I have got the builder to install a power outlet and cable outlet (not that it is necessary for my proposed set up) above the mantel. I have also had a 2" conduit run from above the mantel to where my components are going to live, for the cables from the DVR and DVD player to go through.
The room is pre-wired for surround (again all wired to where the components are), which leads to my main question.
Do I go HD 50" or ED and which one, do I wait for the new ones (the PX500)? Need to order in the next week or so to make sure that it gets there in time for me to install it in the new house.
I do not need speakers on the TV so which is the best model without?
From what I have heard/read and from my experience with my other panny 37" I think the Panny is the one.
I have a full digital Panny reciever
Scientific Atlanta DVR
Sony 400 disk multi DVD player
JBL speakers
Which cables do I need to get the best signal to the TV.
If I buy the industrial panel, do I need any extra input cards to do this?
Thanks fellas, all and any advice would be appreciated.
Brit
renlopez 06-17-05, 06:09 PM If you are looking for a 50", HD is the only option. ED is only an option in 42" and 37".
50PHD7UY gets very good reviews and does not come with speakers or a pedestal stand which you wouldn't need anyway if you wall mount it.
For the best connection, you might want to look at HDMI. Some say that component looks just as good, but you'll have to decide for yourself.
For the commercial panny, you will have to get an HDMI blade. The commercial pannys come with component BNC, S-vid, composite, and VGA which can be used for a second component source with an adapter cable.
You can also run your video through a receiver with high bandwidth component video switching and component upconversion for simplicity and also to accomodate more sources.
Good luck.

Yep, the 50PHD7UY was the one I was hedging towards seeing as I don't need to have speakers etc.
Although I love the pic with my 37" through my cablecard that is not an option on this set (so I don't care if it comes with it or not) due to the fact that we wan't to use the DVR. All I want is to get the best pic possible through the DVR and it looks like HDMI is the way to go (I take it my DVR has a slot, haven't looked as yet).
S-Video triumphs over component for the DVD player I think so that is not a problem either.
Only other thing i suppose is the Nintendo/Playstation input, I supposed I would need another blade for that?

S-Video over component for DVD? This is the first I've heard of this.
If you get the HDMI blade, you won't be able to add another blade for your Nintendo unless you remove the component in slot 1.
If you want too add more s-vid imputs, most A/V receivers do S-Vid switching just fine.
BritOverseas 06-17-05, 06:42 PM Oops my bad, component triumphs in that arena.
So let me get this straight I can't have the DVD (component), DVR (HDMI) AND my game console all connected at once with this set?

Yes you can
DVR - HDMI blade installed in slot 1.
Game Console - S-Video in slot 2
DVD - Component in slot 3 with BNC/RCA adapters
You can optionally connect your DVR to the fixed VGA input using a VGA to Component cable. That way you won't have to get the HDMI blade if you didn't want to. Either that or connect a playstation the VGA with the same cable and play games in 480p resolution.
BritOverseas 06-17-05, 06:58 PM I don't mind paying for the blade as long as it will give me the best picture possible, will the VGA converted cable give me as good a picture with the DVR? I thought there was bad signal degredation when going through the DVR.
renlopez 06-17-05, 07:31 PM The VGA converted cable will give you the same quality as with component video. You can get the HDMI blade and do some comparison using your DVR on HDMI and also using VGA/Component. If the signal quality is similar to you, then use the Component/VGA and get an upconverting DVD player for the HDMI.
I can't comment on the signal degredation with the DVR.
BritOverseas 06-17-05, 08:54 PM renlopez.
Thanks for all your help, looks like the Panny wins.
Maybe I'll get a response in this thread....
Recently I've been having a bit of a problem with my panasonic 42PHD6UY plasma. I remember this use to happen once in a while but it seems to be getting worse.
Basically the problem is the Plasma & my Samsung TS-160 HD D* receiver take a while to get in sync after power up. Now, I'm talking about 10 - 30 seconds....give or take. They are connected via DVI out of the Samsung into the DVI blade on the Plasma. During this time when they are out of sync, the plasma shows a "no signal" message and all I see is internmitent white noise & a black screen.
Since I got my plasma a couple of years ago I've been mostly hanging around the HDTV part of the forum and unfortunately missed any info that might have been discussed with regards to this issue. I've done a couple of searches here and although there seems to be a lot of information on Panny plasmas I can't seem to find what I am looking for.
I would appreciate it if someone could direct me to the proper thread or if someone can offer any suggestions. Any idea what is going on and how to resolve the issue?
Other than this, my PDP works flawlessly.
Thanks a lot for any help!

Sorry, I don't know anything about the "8UK" Models yet. :(
I friend of mine used to work in a Dealer here in New York. He was able to get lots of info from Distributors, Other Dealers and Panasonic Representatives. Unfortunately he doesn't work there anymore. :( :( :(
So now my only source is the internet and Forums. :( :( :(

Bruzzi, can you add a section to your very good FAQ regarding 1:1 pixel mapping to Panasonic Plasma's when using HTPC's? It's a very confusing subject and from what I can see is not covered in your FAQ.

smileyteeth 08-01-05, 11:39 AM HELP! I have a Pani TH-50PX50U. The aspect ratio doesn't work. When I press it nothing happens. Since my wife watches a lot of standard TV Channels coming through DVR Cable box, we want to use the whole screen to limit the chances of burn in. Please help and tell me how I can use aspect ratio with standard TV.
Thanks,
Smiley
jumbolaya 08-01-05, 11:57 AM I have the sa8300 in nyc with my panny 50phd7uy plasma. The native rez on the panny is 720p. My question is which setting should I have selected on my cable box. Do I need to have 720p and 1080i both selected since some of my hd channels broadcast in each or will I get just as good pq if I just select 1080i. The channels change much quicker when I just have 1080i selected.
One other question. Whenever I turn on the tv and it is on an hd 1080i channel like hbo, most times I have to change the channel to a 720p hd channel like fox in order for it to switch to the correct aspect. If its a show that is supposed to have black bars on the sides(non hd program viewed on the hd channel) it stretches it to fill in, I have to switch to a different format channel and switch back to get the black bars on the sides and the correct aspect. I hope this makes sense.
Any help on both issues would be appreciated.
Smiley,
I believe that if you're using component cables to your converter the aspect ratio stays fixed. If you have an S video blade hook that one up also and switch your input on the set and you should be able to change the ratio. At least that how it works on my 42PWD7. Good Luck
smileyteeth 08-01-05, 11:29 PM Thanks kenabb that was the trick, I only had an HDMI Cable hooked in! Now my wife can watch all the regular TV and I don't have to worry as much about burn in.
THANKS
docdino 08-02-05, 11:47 PM Bruzzi,
I've been reading all the forums but still cant get a clear answer. I just purchased the Th-50xvs30 ONYX and the pani s97s upconverting dvd player only to find out that the xvs30 doesnt accept 720p.
First, will I be compromising the stations that transmit in 720p, as well as sporting events.
Second, I cant see a perceivable difference btw the 480p and 1080i upconverted pq while watching dvd's, does the 8th gen pani give a better picture since it can accept the 720p signal for upconversion.???
any help?????
I'm new here, but have been a longtime reader.
I see that many of you have bought the commercial Panny plasmas from online sources. If I read correctly, Panasonic will not support their warranty unless it is bought from an authorized dealer od which there seems to be very few. Is this a risk everyone is taking too lightly? Or am I misinformed.

Nope. You simply set the HD Receiver to output 1080i. The Onyx will then accept that signal.

Can't really say about the "8UK" Models yet. Not sure if there's any improvement on the video processing. Many people can't see much of a difference with the "7UY" Models.

That's for Pioneer, Fujitsu and NEC Plasmas.
Panasonic makes no restriction. The Warranty will still be honored even if you buy the Plasma from non-authorized Online/Local Dealers. :)

cvoytek 08-13-05, 11:20 PM Just saw a review in Kiplingers personal finance magazine (probably September issue) that had a half page on flat panel TV's. It called the 50phd7uy the dream plasma and rated a Samsung model as a best budget option.

Jumbo - I have the 1080,720 and the 3rd I forget rez's outputting from my 8300. I had a ISF brother in law of a friend that tweaked it for me and corrected all my mistakes in the set up. He also did something that made all the 7xx chanels show in ful and all teh other channels show in strech mode 1 automatically.
Don't know if this helps but mine is working great now and since I saw you post I had to at least try to answer. Hope you are doing well bud.

ramonacv 08-15-05, 06:11 PM We are about to buy a 50" plasma and keep going back and forth between the Fujitsu and the Panasonic. The Panasonic, of course, is way less espensive, and we've seen reviews that favor Panasonic and reviews that favor Fujitsu. The home theater dealers and installers all say Fujitsu all the way, no question. Most others say Panasonic. Any input? We are prepared to pay the extra $$ for the Fujitsu, but don't want to be stupid in paying that much more for an equal or possibly even inferior product. This is our first delve into the plasma scene, replacing a 15-year old Mitsubishi regular ol' tv.

Sorry AdamE, I missed your reply.
Well, if you are planning to watch a lot of HD then the HD Model is definitively a better option. And regular TV won't look bad at 14 feet. For closer viewing distances (8-10') regular TV still looks better on a ED Model. IMO.
Or if you want to save some money, you can get the ED Model - at 14 feet HD programming will look stunning just like on a HD Model - keep it for couiple years and then buy a much improved HD Model for cheaper price.

Well, the 50" Fujitsu utilizes Panasonic glass. The key difference is that the internal scaler that the Fujitsu uses is far superior (AVM II). The better scaler will provide much smoother moving images without artifacts. IMHO this alone is worth the price difference. I own a 55" Fujitsu that I just bought and I love it. The blacks aren't as good as on the 50" (not Panasonic glass) but it's amazing nontheless.
Good luck.

The Fujitsu 50" has a better PQ than Panasonic. IMO
Best of two Worlds...
The Great Panasonic Glass + the Superior AVM Video Processing. ;) :)
I was going to get the Fujtsu P50XHA40US to replace my (sold) TH-37PWD6UY but the price I must pay for it is too high to my taste. Also I don't like to wallmount my plasmas so It's another $500 to get the tabletop stand, making the price even more expensive.

Thanks as always

AdamE, The ED Models have lower resolution so the pixels will be bigger than the HD Models. If you sit too close to a ED Plasma, the pixel structure (Many call it Screen Door Effect *) will be visible. But for most people, SDE start to disappear around 7 - 8 feet. At 10 the PQ will be just as great as the HD Models (lines will still be just a bit smoother on the HD for few people). At 14 feet there will be no difference.
If you want to stick with Panasonic... the Consumer TH-42PD50U or if you don't need speakers/tuners get the Commercial TH-42PWD8UK Display (stand is also optional).
* "Screen Door Effect" is when you sit too close to a Plasma Display and the pixel structure becomes visible.
It's like looking through a screendoor.

bRUZZI, THANKS AS ALWAYS....iM NOT MARRIED TO pANNY JUST SEEMS LIKE THAT WHAT THE RESEARCH & KNOWLEDGABLE PEOPLE HERE SEEM TOP SUGGEST, SEEMS LIKE PANNY & PIONEER....ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS??
Action391 08-23-05, 11:46 AM Whats up everyone,
I am thinking about getting the Panny TH-42PWD8UK for my studio apt, which will go in a nook about 16' x 11' (with a big window on the right side of the tv.) I will be using it mostly to watch standard Comcast digital cable, a lot of which I'll record on DVR (I don't watch many sports). I'll probably watch digital cable and DVR 50% of the time, watch DVDs 30% and play Xbox 20% of the time. I found the tv for about $1800, I just have a few questions before I buy it and break the bank.
1) Does this tv have good PQ for both the standard channels I'll be watching (NBC, TBS, HBO, etc) and for DVDs? I just got out of college and this will basically be the first tv I've ever owned, so I'm obviously not extremely picky.
2) Does the tv have a decent stretch mode or am I basically gonna have to watch tv with the grey bars (which means IMO that I'm basically gonna be watching a much smaller tv than 42")?
2) If I get the new Xbox 360 in November, am I gonna really regret not getting an HD that can support the 1080i? I'm not a very avid gamer either, I play Xbox occassionally so again I'm not extremely picky but would like to pay for whats worht it.
3) If the answer to the above is that HD is absolutely the way to go, how much more am I looking to spend for an HD tv similar to the TH-42PWD8UK (about $1000 or so more?)?
Thanks guys.
Action391 08-23-05, 11:48 AM Forgot to add that I'll usually be watching from about 10' or so away, and will be closer when I'm playing Xbox.
kyun7128 08-23-05, 02:20 PM Hi. I've had my 50PHD7UY for about 1 week and I want to access the service menu so I can see how much time I have logged on the display unit. I tried using the procedures outlined in Bruzzi's website for the US model but it does not seem to work on my unit. I would assume the US and Canadian models are pretty much the same. Any input would be appreciated and I apologized if this has already been addressed somewhere.

Action391 08-23-05, 04:10 PM I think I'm missing something...what exactly is the point of these wide plasmas if my digital cable channels wont fill the screen without stretching the picture and they still display black bars on the top and bottom when playing Anamorphic Widescreen DVD's. What can you watch on them that fills the entire screen (without distortion)?

When I first tried this, I made the mistake of pressing the -volume on the remote, not on the panel. It has to be the panel -vol button for this to work.

Actually Anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) DOES fill the screen, as does HDTV. Non-anamorphic widescreen DVDs (2.35:1) will have black bars on top and bottom. But you will get a much bigger picture on a widescreen than on a 4:3 set.

Thanks MikeS_inLA, I made exactly this mistake. It's easy to overlook this point and Bruzzi pointed this out too. I'll be doing it correctly tonight.

Most DVD players have a zoom feature that you can use to eliminate the black bars on 2.35:1 DVD's. There will not be any distortion in the picture, but zoom will degrade the PQ somewhat.
What can you watch that will fill the screen? 1.85:1 DVD's will fill the screen, so will HD brodcasts which are 1.78:1.

Action391 08-23-05, 07:08 PM Soo many questions
What are the differences between the Panasonic TH-42PWD7UY and the TH-42PWD8UK? The only difference I've found so far is that the new one offers PIP (I think?) Is there a potential for new problems with the 8UK?
Also, is getting the TH-37PWD8UK basically a trade-off of better picture for smaller size?
Thanks again

2.35:1 AR DVD's are in fact anamorphic enhanced for 16x9 televisions. They are letterboxed to make them 2.35. Hence the black bars. If you find a non-anamorphic 2.35:1 Movie. What you will actually see is a 4:3 picture with some pretty big black bars on the top and bottom.
Non anamorphic widescreen DVD's are actually letterboxed 4:3. These are pretty much becoming a thing of the past now that most DVD players can format anamorphic DVD's to play on 4:3 televisions in OAR.
Right now, you can either get anamorphic widescreen DVD's or Full screen DVD's with no letterboxing, even some movies in fullscreen format have particular scenes that are letterboxed because it is just not possible to chop off the sides for the duration of the movie. Some scenes will switch to letterboxing and and then back again.

Action391 08-24-05, 10:01 AM I've heard that you get more with the 50U in terms of inputs for about the same price, and will just end up paying more for input cards on the 8UK in the end. Any thoughts?
kyun7128 08-24-05, 10:42 AM Thank Bruzzi...you're the best. As a newbie, it's impossible to figure out what all those abreviations mean.
kyun7128 08-24-05, 10:49 AM I guess this is more of a general newbie question...what is the preferred aspect ratio (or what are most people using) when you are watching standard 4:3 programming? I had my 50PHD7UY set to JUST when I was breaking it in but now I am over my first 100 hours. What aspect ratio (standard, zoom, full, just or auto) are you using when watching regular TV broadcasts?
Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you.

Right now you can get the 50U for almost the same price as the 8UK. For the same price, you do get HDMI, and more component and s-vid connections, plus tuner and stand. To add HDMI and stand to 8UK is an extra $300. 8UK has some features that are desirable to some like PIP and calibration features. Plus, some can't get past the silver on the 50U. To them that might be worth paying the extra in itself.

Thanks, renlopez. Another newbie question: what exactly does HDMI do? It will give me crisper audio and video (and reduce the number of cables I'll use) when I'm watching Comcast SD? HD? DVDs? Playing Xbox? (In other words this is something I'll most likely want?) Thanks again.
renlopez 08-24-05, 12:12 PM HDMI is the an all digital connection that also transferers audio as well as video signals. So if you use the speakers built into the TV, then you will reduce the number cables you have. Arguable HDMI has the best quality picuture. I would make sure I have HDMI. I believe it is going to be the standard for a while.
Greetings Everyone,
I have been following this forum and thread closely for about 6 months now. I thought I would finally jump in with just a couple of questions now. Most have already been answered in my research here. A very sincere thanks to all that have contributed.
The long awaited PDP purchase is now imminent. I have settled on a the Panasonic TH-42PWD8UK (or 37). Almost went for the 7UY, but glad that the 8UK has been released.
1) Can someone recommend a Canadian online source to purchase from? It seems TigerDirect.ca no longer carries the Panasonic Plasma Displays. I read here that someone ordered through Dell... I am curious if Dell resells or rebrands Panasonic? or is the Dell W4200ED manufactured by someone else?
2) Is there a very noticeable difference in viewable area or PQ between the 37 and 42? I am curious if the 37 has a smaller pixel size than the 42 and thus a slightly better PQ?
3) What is the exact measurement of width for the 42? (from someone with a tape measure) The specs say 40.2 ", I know from past experiences not to trust spec sheets implicitly.....The unit will be flush mounted in an existing enclosure - currently 39 inches wide. The 37 will fit nicely with ample room on each side. The 42 will need some 'shoehorning'.... a bit of drywall removal around the perimeter or I might have to set back the 2 x 4 studs on each side (or trim as required). My gut tells me that 42 is so much more viewable area, that I would regret anything smaller. A 37 would be an easier install, but I want to maximize the viewing area.
4) Does anyone use the wireless blade? Feedback?
I think that covers it....
Thanks in advance!
1) I'll let the Canadian Members answer about the dealers. :)
It's a Panasonic Plasma... NOT a rebadged Dell.
Dell USA used to sell Panasonic Plasmas few years ago.
2) For closer viewing distance... YES.
Much less Screen Door Effect due to smaller pixels.
If you sit 8 feet or more there will be a liitle/no difference.
3) 40 1/8"
For most people the pixels start to disappear around 8 feet on the 42" ED.
So If your viewing distance is 8 feet or more get the 42" ED.

bRUZZI, THANKS AS ALWAYS....iM NOT MARRIED TO pANNY JUST SEEMS LIKE THAT WHAT THE RESEARCH & KNOWLEDGABLE PEOPLE HERE SEEM TOP SUGGEST, SEEMS LIKE PANNY & PIONEER....ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS??
While other Brands are improving, I would stick with Panasonic, Pioneer or Fujitsu. My opinion only. ;)
Thank Bruzzi...you're the best. As a newbie, it's impossible to figure out what all those abreviations mean.
You're Very Welcome. :)
I guess this is more of a general newbie question...what is the preferred aspect ratio (or what are most people using) when you are watching standard 4:3 programming? I had my 50PHD7UY set to JUST when I was breaking it in but now I am over my first 100 hours. What aspect ratio (standard, zoom, full, just or auto) are you using when watching regular TV broadcasts?
Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you.
I used to HATE The "JUST" Mode. But after using it for years, It doesn't bother me anymore. So I use "JUST" Mode for 4:3 Sources.

If I am at a 10ft viewing distance, should I stick with 42" HD Panny or will going up to 50" also be ok at that distance? Thanks!
goku4658 08-25-05, 09:55 AM Bruzzi, thanks for setting up that FAQ. Its answering alot of my questions and I'd be lost finding a stand on ebay w/o it, hehe.

If you can afford it, the 50" would be excellent. Common rule of thumb for viewing distance is 1.5 to 3.0X the diagonal screen size.
For a more sophisticated chart try this. (http://www.myhometheater.homestead.com/viewingdistancecalculator.html)

Thanks for the site link. I am still confused as to what all of the results mean. If I calcualted your common rule of thumb correctly, 75" to 150" would be ok to view this TV. That would come out to 6ft 3" and 12ft 3". Am I right in figuring it out this way? Thanks again very much for your help! :)

Apparently it can fit. But I still have to confirm. The poles used on those stands are about 1.5" taller than the ones used for the Commercial Plasmas. So the plasma won't sit flush with the stand. Also they're made of flexible plastic (the feet are reinforced with metal) so unless you can get them for a cheap price, the TY-ST42PA20U is a much better option IMO.

Yes, your calculations are correct. (Actually, 12ft 6", but I suspect that was just a typo.) This chart (http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-7608_7-1016109-2.html?tag=tnav) does the math for you, if you'd prefer.
Action391 08-26-05, 12:21 PM I just looked through some of the DVD Player forum and am completely lost. I just got a TH-42PD50U, my question is:
1) how do you know if a DVD player has a "good" de-interlacer that's better than the one in the TV?
2) I looked at the Panny DVD-S77S player (~$200) and the Denon 2910(~$700), both progressive scans and both HDMI I think, but don't understand the huge difference in price. Anybody know if the S77 is a decent player for a newbie like myself?
3) Anybody know of an even cheaper progressive scan player w/ HDMI that doesn't have the unnecessary upconversion?
Thanks again

lysinger 08-27-05, 12:59 AM I have questions regarding the use of a HTPC with a Panasonic TH-42PHD8UK Plasma TV.
What is the best video resolution to feed the VGA input on the set in order to fill the screen and get the best picture?
Would this differ with a 50" version noting that the horizontal pixels available on the 50" are 1366 vs 1024 on the 42"?
Thanks,

Hi,
I bought a 42px500u about a month ago. In checking for how long the unit it's being on, I went into the service menu. I fear that in the process I might have changed something by mistake. I'm not sure. I swear the picture doesn't look the same as before, but it could be my mind playing tricks on me. I even bought the service manual for it, but it doesn't really go into what the default settings are supposed to be. Can anyone please help me where to find what the default settings are for a 42px500u. I posted this on the 500u specific forum but no one bother to reply. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank,
Jules.

hockeynut 08-27-05, 08:00 PM I noticed on the spec sheet for the new commercial models that they state:
Up to 2,048 shades of gradation (4,096 shades via HDMI or DVI connection)
Is the more shades what decreases the false contouring and color banding problems like when you look at a blue sky or fog on a dark screen.
I have the new consumer 42 ED model and notice this every now and then and have come to accept it. I am currently using component connection. If the statement above is true for the consumer model as well, if I switch to an HDMI connection and this doubles the number of shades, do you think I will notice less color banding issues?
Macfan424 08-28-05, 01:11 PM ... if I switch to an HDMI connection and this doubles the number of shades, do you think I will notice less color banding issues?
In theory, yes.
However, in the real world things don't always work as planned, so you won't know for sure until you try. Some people seem to be more sensitive to this problem than others, so it's possible that it will be better, but not enough to completely satisfy you.
I'm not especially sensitive to false contouring, but when I do notice it, it seems to be related to the quality of the source material. I see it most often on poor grade signals. After I started to process external sources through an iScan Ultra, I thought I saw it less often. I'm not sure everyone would have the same reaction, though.
I am planning on getting a Panny 42" Plasma, probably the TH-43pd50U. My original plan was to mount this on the wall since I have a small viewing room. However both walls in my condo are neighboring walls with the adjacent condo.
I'm concerned with the builtin in speakers that the sound would be transmitted through the wall. Anyone have any comments or thoughts about that?
Also is there a way to disconnect (not remove) these speakers and use external speakers? Or should I just opt for maybe a commercial model with speakers?
Any comments?
Macfan424 08-28-05, 01:31 PM No problem. You can either turn the speakers "Off" in the audio menu, or turn them all the way down. I do the latter so I can use them if I want to (which is rare). It also lets me activate the closed caption easily, by just hitting the "mute" button.
Of course, the commercial option would work, too.
frizille 08-28-05, 05:26 PM I've been on and off the forums for several months just reading posts and keeping tabs on the PDP sets as a whole. Thanks to everyone for the tips/tricks/etc.
I'm finally ready to plop down some cash and get a new Panny (my first PDP, upgrading from a Benq6100 w/ 100" DIY Screen) as I think they have the best PQ from what I've seen in stores (granted thats an imperfect world but I went to 7-8 different stores and compared notes from each display at each one). I'm looking for feedback from the group on what they think between the TH50PHD7UY, TH-50PX50U, and the TH-50PX500U. I've pretty much settled on the TH50PHD7UY for the following:
- can change out the interface modules (HDMI, VGA onboard, Component, etc)
- Don't need the tuner on the TH-50PX50U or TH-42PX500U for cable
- Don't need the speakers
- It's all black vs having some silver in there
- All TV and DVD will come from the HTPC so only need 1 HDMI interface
- Xbox/Gamecube can come in via SVid or Component so no contention there
- Seating distance is around 9-10 feet so the 50" should be fine (although I'll miss the size of the 100" screen (wont miss only being able to watch TV at night though... the room is very bright during the day).
I'm wondering what you get besides Picture in Picture + cable card on the 500U? Does it really improve anything in the electronics? The glass is all 8th gen on all 3 units based on the Panny website so I can't think there would be much difference between the 50U and the 500U (saw them together at 1 HiFi store and didnt notice any diff on SD or HD content).
Next question is do I go with the series "8" industrial models or just get the "7" series. My budget cap is about $4000 (although if I went slightly over that would be ok ... already trying to rationalize it... sigh) and right now all 3 sets are in the $3600 range at a few places.
Quick edit: Just found a great price, few hundred $$$ cheaper than the "7" models, for the TH-50PHD8UK. Any reason not go with that one?
Any and all feedback is appreciated ...

hockeynut 08-28-05, 05:41 PM Thanks for your reply Macfan. I agree that the problem gets worse on poor source material. As long as I try not to look for it, it is not a problem for me. I still love the TV. Eye popping HD on an ED!
I don't have a receiver with HDMI connection yet, but I am sure I will when Directv releases their new MPEG-4 receivers. I will have to wait until then to see.
The other thing I still was not sure about was if the 4096 shades were just for the commercial models or was this for the consumer models as well. I never remember seeing that listed on the consumer models.

I think 4096 shades are for the "8UK" Models Only (Using HDMI / DVI)

Nope. (until I'm proven wrong, ;) )

I assume you are aware of it, but just in case you aren't, this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=569538&page=1&pp=30) discusses (at great length! ;) ) how you can get a D* HD TiVo for $200 or so, in case you are interested. No one knows for sure that it's true, but D*s CSRs are telling people that they will upgrade to the MPEG-4 units for free when the time comes. I think it will be a while before you need MPEG-4 in St. Louis, and if you already are a D* subscriber and get HD OTA, it's a great deal.
I just hooked one up to my TH-42PD25/U, and I'm delighted with it. The SD picture via HDMI is almost as good as it is through my iScan Ultra, and the HD is as good as through the Panasonic's built-in tuner. Plus it's a TiVo you can use for OTA as well as D* recording. :)
galenkelch 08-28-05, 08:12 PM I read too much - just got my new px50u and wanted to get it set to the "norm". What is the link to the normal settings people start out with (not factory) - I can't find em now...

frizille 08-28-05, 08:44 PM Thanks Bruzzi, looks like the "8UK" is the way to go - cheaper, best features/price... I just can't figure out why its cheaper then the 7UY models??? I've been following the following thread regarding stretch modes on the Panny consumer units, and I'm trying to find out a definitive answer regarding the 37" 8Uks. the answers in this thread are all over the place...
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=538357&page=1&pp=30
Short version: If I'm connected to the 8UK from my Comcast HD cable box via component connection ONLY, will I be able to set aspect ratio (specifically sidebars or Just mode) from the monitor, or am I going to have to deal with some sort of hack where I have both component and s-video connected from the cable box, and have to switch inputs every time I change stations?
I ask because I specifically cannot do this on my current Samsung tube. Input via component is frozen at whatever ratio is provided by the source, and the stretch modes provided by the Comcast box are unacceptable.
"Should be able to" isn't a good enough answer before I buy.
Thanks!
To clarify a bit more, does the panny freeze display at the source's aspect ratio based on the input (component/DVI) or based on some information in the signal itself (SD station or HD station).
My Samsung tube disables aspect adjustment when viewing from the component input and I just need to figure out if this is a failing of the Samsung design, or a fact of life that I'll have to work around with macros on my universal remote.
tks
Macfan424 08-29-05, 02:54 PM To clarify a bit more, does the panny freeze display at the source's aspect ratio based on the input (component/DVI) or based on some information in the signal itself (SD station or HD station)...
It's based on the incoming signal. Panasonic will not allow changes to aspect ratios with HD signals (720p or 1080i). If you set a STB to deliver SD pictures to the TV upconverted to 720p or 1080i, you cannot change the TV's aspect ratio either (although it might be possible on the STB itself).
So let me get this straight...
If I want to be able to switch between Comcast channel 720 (HBO HD) and Comedy Central (SD, justified stretch mode), I have to have a specific macro set up on my remote for each channel that...
1) Changes the output mode from the set-top-box from 1080i to SD, then
2) change the channel.
or
1) Changes the monitor input from the component input to the s-video or composite input
2) changes the channel
For EVERY channel change!?!
Since the Comcast HD box doesn't switch modes via remote (requires a off/menu bounce), this is totally INSANE.
Please tell me I'm misunderstanding. This kind of procedure would make the purchase a no-go. I simply can't believe that the monitor is not able to look at the signal coming in through the component or dvi input and allow stretching if its SD and not if its HD.
My apologies if I'm being dense, but I'm just going off the the behavior of my current monitor, on which I don't care about sidebar burn in.
1) I'll let the Canadian Members answer about the dealers. :)

Thanks!
and thanks for the PM's on Cdn vendors, ChrisM
Apparently Dell still sells Panny Plasma, as does a local vendor - EvisionPlasma
Most viewing will be done from 10' for DVD's and up to 20' if I am in the kichen with the hockey game in the background.
I saw the consumer 42 at a local Big Box store and had no issue with the PQ at those distances. I imagine both units will have noticable SDE at just 5' (wife's preferred chair)
Is the larger viewing area of the 42 over the 37 that noticable? I can't seem to find a dealer with that size on display.
And.... is it worth the effort of using the sawzall to make the 42 fit... :o ?
Macfan424 08-29-05, 05:07 PM GQB: I have satellite, so I don't know much about cable boxes, but I understand some of them have a "pass though" mode which automatically sends the TV a 1080i, 720p, or 480i signal as broadcast by the originating channel. If you have that, your problem is solved.
Otherwise you may have to settle for "full" mode from the box which doesn't look radically different to me from the "just" mode, at least from my D* receiver (which lacks a pass through mode). Or go through the convolutions you describe, as I must if I want to zoom a letter-boxed SD program to fill the screen.
Thanks Macfan...
I'm finally piecing the story together, (found an online manual for the Comcast DCT box) and you are correct. Looking forward to ordering my panny!
BTW... as a personal 'first', I've decided to intentionally go 'smaller' on an AV component. :)
Even tho' I figure out a way to make the 42" fit in our antique armoir, I had to decide that teh 37" just fit better aesthetically. The 42 would have either been sidetrimmed by the armoir's front moldings, or would have stood out in front of the beautiful antique on its articularing arm like wierd genetic engineering experiment.
Sometimes the overall design look is more important than the 'wow' factor.
I have the 37". I could have probably used the 42", especially if it were HD... but I love the size I have. It doesn't overpower the room which is also a library... and it fits right into a bookshelf on an articulating arm. I'm very happy with it. I hope you enjoy yours too.
msboc...
Know what you mean. If the room is a dedicated 'home theatre', then it makes sense to have the screen overwhelm the room. But this is a living room where, believe it or not, we want the young 'uns to occasionally do other things (like maybe converse.) Even when off, a huge screen screams "WATCH ME !!". We want to be able to hide the screen back in the armoir with out filing a flight plan.
The 42 would also have put me back into the ED vs HD debate. Looking forward to getting my 37".
I just can't figure out why its cheaper then the 7UY models??? I mean wow. $600 difference seems like a big deal - the "8UK" is $2000 cheaper (online) than the PX50U version in some stores.
That's because prices of Plasmas are falling down each year. And not just for Panasonic but all other Brands as well.

tebadong 08-29-05, 10:44 PM I am a new Panasonic Plasma owner. My set came with the standard 1 yr warranty. Should I extend the warranty for 2 additional yrs at $350? I have 30 days to take the extended warranty. Any thoughts?
Need advice guys between the 500U and the 50U. I like the extra features of the 500U, but I have to order online and now I find that it really isnt a true PIP from the same source. The speakers would be a downgrade, but I would get a new surround system in the next moth after the shock of this wore off. I like the CPU connectivity, but it is not a neccessity since I have a nice LCD flat panel for that. My biggest fear is the amount of connections. Is that enough if I want to connect a game system, a DVD player and my HD satellite box? I can also go pick up the 50U from CC, so that is a plus. Any help on what I should do would be great! Thanks!!!

You also have a #3.. which is what you should use.
With Component output:
Comcast uses the Motorola cable box.
in the set-up of this box, you set the output as YrPb (Component)
Then you set the Output as 720P or 1080i (your choice)
Then you set the SD Override to 480i or 480p (again your choice) don't use "Stretch" or "Off", as you will have not have aspect control of the monitor if you do.
Here's what will happen:
On HD channels, you will have no aspect controls (monitor will lock at "Full".)
On SD channels, the "Override" function of the cablebox takes over, and sends the signal you selected (480i or 480p). The Panny Panel will allow you full control of the aspect of the monitor (Full, Zoom, Just, and 4:3 w/ sidebars).
I have a 7UY, and this same senario works also with the DVI input, although, I can not select 480i on the override... no signal. DVI requires a progressive signal, I also assume this would be the case via HDMI with the new Moto 6412 that has forgone the DVI for HDMI.
Not sure this is the right thread... but
I'm about to buy a 42PWD8UK, and I need either a DVI or HDMI blade. I'd prefer the HMDI, but I'm having trouble finding one. I was told they are on "national back order". Does anyone have a clue where and when I could get one?
Or should I just settle for a DVI? I'm using it for my OPPO, and I'm considering getting a Gefen switch to add TWC digital cable.
Has anyone who owns a Panasonic noticed an audible buzzing or humming? I'm at high altitude (Denver which is a mile hi). Their website doesn't say it's tested for high altitude, but does say it's manufactured for elevations around 7,000 feet. Please advise asap.
xandypx... Thanks! That confirms what I thought I found by digging around in the menu. I think my concern was based on the fact that my Samsung is pretty stupid... it just totally disables internal stretch/zoom and a lot of other things for anything physically coming in on the component ins.
I'm sure the panny is smarter.
When using pass-through from the moto to the panny, should I use interlaced or progressive?

Before my DVI blade showed up, I was connected to the 7UY through component. IMHO, I found 480P to look far superior to 480i on the digital non-HD channels. With non-Digital channels, if I recall correctly, neither setting made those channels look any good... kind of like how they still look over DVI...

I'm at 5600 ft. in Arizona, and my 7UY makes no noise whatsoever.
BruZZi,
Would you do the Avia calabration after the 100 hours of during the 100 hours of break in? What is your opinion on letting a DVD loop to speed up the 100 hour break in. I don't watch much TV except at night and worry that it will take forever to break in. Thanks!

You can calibrate now but do it again after 100 hours or so.

That's a good Idea. You can use whatever source that fills the whole screen.

BruZZi,
One more quick question please if I can. Is it also ok to run a VCR during the break in period. I assume it's safe like running a DVD correct? My wife still has VHS workout tapes so she needs her VCR. Thanks for the help again, You have helped me alot. :D
Hello everyone,
I've tried searching and posting a couple of times for the default service menu settings on a 42px500u to no avail. I think I might have changed something on mine by accident. I'm posting what my settings are currently in the hopes of finding someone kind enough with a 42px500u to verify my settings. If anybody needs help on navigating the service menu, Please let me know. I have the service manual. Here are the settings that I can see on my set's service menu. If anybody has different values or extra settings please let me know. Thanks in advance.

i am hoping to buy my first plasma, and the panny hd is my first choice but i am unsure which to go for.can someone explain to me what is the benefit of having the 50 inch over the 42inch .
honeboy 09-04-05, 08:24 PM i believe it might be a bit bigger
bdeshong 09-04-05, 11:05 PM So, I'm considering ordering my 42" HD 8UK soon, but I wonder...once I take it out of the box...then what?
What should I tweak? Here's what I understand so far...
1) Picture Menu: set to "Standard" (doesn't it come factory set to "Dynamic"?)
2) Brightness: set to level 0 or lower during first 100 hours
Below are things I'd think would be good to set...can someone confirm or comment on these items? These are based on what I've read in the Panasonic manual.
1) Setup screensaver -- white bar scroll?
2) Set "Wobbling" to "On"
Thanks! I'm just prepping for this purchase in the next week or two, and want to have a laundry list of things I should set once it's out of the box and running.
Maybe this would be something good to add to the FAQ? A set of guidelines to follow during the first 100 hours? It'd be nice to refer to something like that once my panel is sitting here running.
i believe it might be a bit bigger
Yup. Especially if you sit 10 feet or more. :)

Well, then what additional steps should I take in trying to prevent burn-in when watching, say, 2.35 content? Are the black bars something I should be concerned about?

Simply watch whatever programming that fills the whole screen (1.85:1 Movies / HDTV / 4:3 sources using the "JUST" mode) as much as you can.

kumakazi 09-05-05, 02:36 AM I bought a commercial panasonic plasma tv. I found out LATER that it is commercial not standard which has all the stuff one needs to watch TV. I had the TV for 3 months and alas, still not been able to connect it to make it work. I recently realized that TV is just a monitor and I need some type of a receiver so I went to Costo and bought me a Samsung DVD/Video combo stuff. I thought I made all the connection o.k. but I have only sound and no TV picture. I have Comcast but no cable box so I connected cable to DVD/Video, then everything is hazy..... Please help

NOt sure if this is right thread...am looking for advice on long term service agreements. Bought a 50" Panny over Labor Day weekend at CC. Should I go for the LTSA? Generally, I avoid these agreements for other electronics because they are "Cash cows" for the seller. For the Panny, they want $599 for 3 years full coverage. Panny's warranty is one year "in home" at least that is what the owner manual says. Do I need to spend an extra $600 or is that overkill? Anyone have a bad experience with Panny warranty? Or has your LTSA "saved your bacon"?
Another question for the group. I just installed my 50" Panny over the fireplace in my Family Room. Replaced a 45" Mitsubishi projection TV box that, of course, sat on the floor (screen about 2 feet off ground). My viewing distance about 14 feet.
The bottow of the plasma screen is about 6 feet off the floor. Seems really high! Is this because it is new, or will I be disappointed over the long term with this location?

DJB64, there are some threads talking about extended Warranties. Do a search. I have no expereience with any of them so I can't help you with that.
And Yes, All the Panasonic Consumer Models have In-Home Warranty (One Year Parts/Labor).

kumakazi 09-06-05, 08:56 PM Bruzzi, I have 3 connection going on from Plasma to DVD/Video combo.
1) S video
2) RCA (only using red and white and no black)
3) One that looks like RCA but has green, blue & red (??) color combo.
1) S video is plugged into where it belongs on Plasma & DVD/Video combo.
3) is plugged into TV and also DVD/Video combo because it's color coded and each component has only 1 with that strange color.
2) RCA is plugged into audio of Plasma TV?? If I unplug this, I have no sound coming out of TV.

SharadM 09-07-05, 06:54 PM Hi. I'm new to these forums, so please excuse any gaffes in advance.
I want to buy a 37" flat panel & DVD player. My two primary uses of the system are watching DVD movies and doing slideshows of my digital pictures. I don't really watch broadcast TV. I already have a receiver/speakers, and a multi-system VCR which has a regular TV tuner.
My current top contender is the upcoming TH-37PHD8UK commercial plasma from Panasonic, connected to the OPPO 971 dvd player using the optional HDMI board & a DVI-HDMI cable, running at 720P. From all that I have read on these forums this should be more than adequate for watching DVD's. My question is related to my secondary use of displaying photos, and in particular I want to understand how in this setup I could make sure that if I have a native jpg that is 16:9 aspect ratio (assume 1280x720) it displays on my plasma filling up the entire screen without any perceptual distortion.
The 37PHD8UK specs say it's native resolution is 1024x720. Given that the aspect ratio of the screen is 16:9, this means that the pixels are not square. I'm struggling with understanding just how my pictures will get scaled to show on this tv under the following setups:
a) If I burn a CD with jpgs that are 1280x720 pixels in size, the DVD player should (and OPPO technical support agrees) send them like that through the 720p HDMI interface. Will the plasma scale this down to 1024x720 (this squishing the picture) and then display it on the full screen (stretching out the prior squish)?
b) If I attach a PC to the VGA input, and configure it to feed 1024x720, I'm guessing that there will be no scaling. Will the PC picture then look stretched (since the PC assumes square pixels but the display has rectangular pixels)?
c) If I attach a PC to the VGA input and configure the PC to feed in 1280x720, will it then get scaled down such that the whole picture shows up on my plasma with the correct aspect ratio when stretched out?
Thanks in advance for any help on this - hopefully someone who has a panasonic plasma with rectangular pixels and has used the VGA input will be able to give me the answers. I was initially looking at getting a 37" LCD instead (since those have full 1366x768 native resolution) but the pictures on the panasonic plasma just look a lot better ...
- Sharad
DoubleEntry 09-07-05, 07:41 PM I have had the set since June (April MFG Date). I am now getting a thin light 'band' down the left side of the screen. There is a black line where it starts. I can see the picture in the stripe area, but it's lighter. I'm using a HDMI to DVI connection from the Comcast Moto 6412. \
The HD picture is fine.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
Jeff
Just saw that Panasonic has new model numbers for the 8th gen plasmas....
e.g. TH-42PHD8GK/S.... new name for TH-42PHD8UK?
8GK is charcoal black, 8GS has silver bezel.

Any advice on using Avia. I tried the advance setting with instructions from a site and it seemed confusing. Will the basic setting part help me set up a good enough picture? Thanks much! :)
Panasonic Plasma 09-08-05, 02:43 PM Those are specific models for the hospitality industry (hotels, etc.). No standard input boards included... and a SmartPlug/PPV board is an optional accessory.
Mike MCGowan 09-08-05, 10:49 PM What's the differences between the PX50U & PX500U Models ?
I am mainly concerned with number of inputs. 1 HDMI or 2?
The price on the px50u is REALLY attractive, but I need inputs for all my video games, and I'd like them to be both hdmi, or maybe vga
they both have 1 HDMI input...
differences between the 2 (in favor of the 500) are
photo/SD/PC viewer
better audio
extra set of front connectors
PC input

lmarkoff 09-09-05, 04:56 PM I am contemplating the purchase of a 50-inch "8UK", 8th gen Panny (the industrial version, in other words). I already own an NAD integrated amplifier which I would like to use to drive outboard speakers. Will I be able to rig the set-up so that I can control the volume using the Panny remote control? (I think this is tantamount to asking whether the Panny has a variable Audio output provision.)
Will there be any problems with synchrony between the video and audio, and can I still use the the HDMI input (provided of course that I purchase the HDMI blade)?
Thx in advance to anyone who can answer these questions.
vikings222 09-10-05, 02:12 PM We are considering purchasing a Panny TH-50PHD8UK along with TY ST07K pedestal stand, and TY-SP50P5WK speakers. We have Comcast cable running through the TIVO box and a DVD player hooked up to the current TV. Other then wanting to get a great picture we aren't too concerned with a bunch of gadgets or features.
Will the TV work without buying anything else? I read kumakazi's threads and am concerned this will happen to me. Also, how important is calibration? Thanks for any feedback. :)

What is your source and what input are you using? Is your DVD player or cable box set to 16:9 or Widescreen output? Which dimension is squashed - vertical or horizontal? We need much more info!
:)
MikeS_inLA 09-10-05, 04:32 PM Will I be able to rig the set-up so that I can control the volume using the Panny remote control? (I think this is tantamount to asking whether the Panny has a variable Audio output provision.)
If the 8UK is like the 6UY, it only has speaker outputs, no audio outputs. So you can only use the Panny volume control if you go through the Panny onboard amplifier. Unless the HDMI board has audio outputs, but I am not familiar with that board.
Barrybud 09-11-05, 12:17 PM since the 7th generation has a more advanced display with less image retention.
Panny has image retention?
Thanks for the honesty because when ever the topic has come up (NEC) Panny owners swore up and down that they never get it on their panels. ;)

rod_video 09-11-05, 02:07 PM Hi all there,
just a quick question (and rather than opening a whole new thread for it, I thought I'd briefly hijack this one). The Pannys PX500U (both 42" and 50") seem to be sold out. Now, my question. The dealers don't seem to have any good clue on when will the new batch of these tv sets will arrive at the US. Just wondering... does anybody around here has some good better_or_insider info on when will these sets may arrive?
thanks in advance!

bdeshong 09-11-05, 06:57 PM Question. I just got an SA8300HD DVR, and my TH-42PHD8UK is arriving this week. The panel is 1024x768, and the STB wil output 720p and 1080i. Right now, I've got it set to output 1080i.
My question is this. My panel is 768 lines, so if I set the STB to 1080i, the panel will scale down to fit 768 lines on the panel. But, if I set the STB to 720p, will it have to scale up to fit 768 lines? Basically, will get I ultimately get more detail from the 1080i feed rather than the 720p one sheerly because the panel will just have to remove some lines of detail? What will it do if I feed it 720p -- will it have to add those lines, and if so, what criteria does it use to add lines to fit the panel's native image?
So basically..what's better to feed my panel? 1080i or 720p? How important is the interlaced vs. progressive battle here? Hope that's clear...
snowjay 09-11-05, 08:07 PM You should set the STB to pass all resolutions (1080/720/480) to the PDP and let it do the up/down converstions to it's native resolution.
lmarkoff 09-11-05, 09:23 PM If the 8UK is like the 6UY, it only has speaker outputs, no audio outputs. So you can only use the Panny volume control if you go through the Panny onboard amplifier. Unless the HDMI board has audio outputs, but I am not familiar with that board.
Thanks, Mike. All other information I can find would seem to indicate that you are correct; even the latest 8UK version of the industrial plasma does not have ANY audio output except via the built-in 10W per channel amplifiers, which are only fit to drive their mediocre accessory speakers or the like. I simply cannot understand this. It would seem to me that a business user of a plasma display would also want the option to amplify the audio portion of a program with external higher power and better quality amplifiers. Assuming that I am not overlooking something obvious, then how can one use this set in a true home theater set-up, especially in conjunction with the HDMI input(s)? The lack of an audio output is almost a deal-killer for me; I don't want to be limited to using their built in amplifiers. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has addressed this question with any of the "industrial type" Panny plasmas.
Jack Day 09-11-05, 09:42 PM Hi- New to all this, but here's our issue:
Our brand new "CableCARD Ready" Panasonic TH42PX50U is set for installation tomorrow, 9/12/05. We have conventional cable service thru Brighthouse (Tampa Bay area), so just called them about scheduling installation of cableCARD, and was told our model is not on their list. Very skeptical about this, but even if they're wrong, how to persuade them and get the card?

Although I am a veteran audiophile, I am a home theater newbie, and therefore I did not realize that there is a commonly used solution to my problem (Or so I was told by a local dealer yesterday). Apparently, front end gear like STBs and DVD players have coaxial or optical audio outputs in addition to HDMI or DVI, so the audio signal can be directly routed from either of these components to an AVR, which then drives the external speakers. The audio signal simply never has to go through the plasma panel itself, so there is no need for an audio output on the panel. Sorry to make a fuss over nothing.
you beat me to the punch, lmarkoff!! Even though I use hdmi to my plasma, which includes audio, I use the optical out of my cable box and dvd player to go to my a/v receiver.
not sure about the pannys, but lots of tvs that take hdmi in do not send a 5.1 signal out anyway.

FWIW--the owner's manual for my Panny 50PX50U states (claims?) that it (plasma) can send a digital audio signal via its' built-in optical out to an external component (e.g., HT receiver) that has a built-in DD decoder; however, it doesn't explicitly state if the digital source that the Panny is passing to an external component could be from the audio portion of the HDMI (assuming of course that something is connected to the HDMI port of the Panny), the digital audio of a program source derived from the built-in ATSC tuner, or both.
rod_video 09-13-05, 07:30 PM Hi all there,
just a quick question (and rather than opening a whole new thread for it, I thought I'd briefly hijack this one). The Pannys PX500U (both 42" and 50") seem to be sold out. Now, my question. The dealers don't seem to have any good clue on when will the new batch of these tv sets will arrive at the US. Just wondering... does anybody around here has some good better_or_insider info on when will these sets may arrive?
thanks in advance!

any info on the above? more and more stores keep saying that they won't have units for [anywhere from 2 days from now to the end of the month]. Not that I don't believe them, but I wonder if...
the new units will have firmware fixes for some of the 'bugs' that people are reporting (banding, buzzing/humming, 'black fluctuation')...
Also, in other thread somebody mentioned something along the lines of "Pannys made in Mexico". I thought all the plasmas were made in Japan so far...
technodynamic 09-14-05, 08:29 AM nevermind.

FWIW--the PX50 I bought this past weekend has a July 2005 build date, built in Mexico...maybe later builds are now assembled in Mexico? Seems like a lot of A/V stuff is being assembled there these days--my HR10-250 HD Tivo box was also assembled there...
rod_video 09-14-05, 02:47 PM thanks.
hmm... well, as long as they are pair to the ones made/assembled in Japan.

Bruzzi or anyone...I got a copy of Avia from VA, but my DVD player is an older Sony DVP-C660...about 5 years old, only outputting 480i. Is it even worth calibrating my set with such an old DVD player? Should I just wait to get one that's got 720p/1080i upconverting?
Here are my pics, though....

Hi,
I have just had my TH-42PD50U for less than a week, but the aspect control on the remote is not working: it stays frozen at 'Full'. (I can use Recall to read the current status) I was viewing dvd connected through s-video, from what I read the aspect control should work. For the sake of testing, I have tried viewing 4:3 content from VCR through RF jack, and still no luck with the aspect ratio control. Has this happened to anyone?
Any inputs appreciated.

Thanks, ice1874193.
Actually, my wife accidentally discovered fix (that I have been scratching my head for hours and no avail :-), there is a "reset" in the menu that resets everything to factory default. Apparently that got the tv out of whatever status it was stuck in and aspect control is working again.

Yes, it's worth calibrating your set "with such an old DVD player."
Mine is an old Sony DVP-S550, and calibrating gave me a much better picture. (Against advice, I did most of my calibration on the player, not the TV, as that was the only way to get it to pass "below black" signals.)
You will probably have to recalibrate if/when you get a new player, but that's not a big deal. (There's a bit of a learning curve, but It doesn't take as long the second time.)
For what it's worth, as an alternative you can get an iScan Ultra video processor these days for ~ $350, less than many mid-priced DVD players. It doesn't do 720p/1080i upconverting (your TV is good at that, though), but it does give you top of the line deinterlacing, which is the critical factor, as well as outstanding picture and color control in addition to numerous other benefits. They work great with good quality 480i DVD players, and improve VCR, LD, and SD satellite box PQ, too, if you use any of those.
vancouver 09-18-05, 01:45 PM I have been trying to get 1:1 on my plasma for the last year! I am using an Iscan HD external processor and am sending 1024x768p via the vga input. I know I have the scaling right but am not sure about the line rate and frame rate.
right now I have this.
Frame Rate: 59.94 Hz (locked)
LIna rate: 48.252 KHz
is this right?
2) For closer viewing distance... YES.
Much less Screen Door Effect due to smaller pixels.
If you sit 8 feet or more there will be a liitle/no difference.
For most people the pixels start to disappear around 8 feet on the 42" ED.
So If your viewing distance is 8 feet or more get the 42" ED.
Thanks Again...
The TH-37PWD8UK has been ordered. I decided the close viewing area / better PQ and easier install made the 37 the better choice. I ended up purchasing from a local specialist B&M... their price was the same as any online vendor and their office is 1 block from my own.... Great Customer Service.
... and now the waiting begins... 5 - 10 days.
Thanks Again...

For what its worth, I've had my 37PWD8UK for about 2 weeks, and I'm thrilled. With a viewing distance of over 8', even HD content looks as good or better than it did on my 30" tube. The sharpness and size make it feel like I'm seeing HD for the first time. I have to nearly put my nose on the screen to see SDE.
I don't regret not getting the 42" for a moment... Its important to have the right screen for the room. Even got a 'wow' from my mate.
And to think that 6 months ago, I would have turned up my nose at ED at its mere mention.
One question: When I see ED broadcasts on Fox, they're of noticably lower quality than HD broadcasts. But I'm viewing on an ED monitor, so how is this possible?
"Just read a discussion on the movie data base boards about plasma tv and several people said the same things...1.* Plasma tv doesn't last...after a couple of years the picture gets grainy** 2.* Plasma tv has not been agreed upon as the high def tech of the future, they are working on tech that will give a longer life and other advantages..
Several people strongly advised against buying plasmas now."
I was lead to beleive brightness fades in say 60k hrs. But grainy?
What is the exp of plasma owners? Is this true?

I feel exactly the same way you do. 37' was the right size for my room. I get compliments; and my room isn't all TV. I love it!
bdeshong 09-21-05, 10:07 PM So after a week of my 42PHD8UK, I've noticed something. This may be the "black level shifting" you all speak of, but I'm not sure.
When I'm watching HD or SD content, and the picture gets more white in it (i.e. when the logo on the Law and Order intro zooms in), I notice that the entire picture gets a notch brighter.
The Avia DVD mentioned that this is normal on plasma and LCD displays as it's based on the average brightness of what's being displayed. What do you all think?
PersianImmortal 09-23-05, 12:17 PM I think you should turn off any 'color management' or other image processing options in the display menu. These usually dynamically alter contrast to suit the brightness on screen.
For example I have the TH-42PV500A (Australian version of the 500U), and if set to 'Auto' mode, and/or if 'color management' is enabled, the contrast and saturation of colors will constantly change. This is very annoying, so I set the TV to Standard mode and disabled color management on all inputs = perfect constant contrast.

Try searching before you post. Panasonic plasma's are at 8th generation now.. you honestly think if they were crap that people would be buying them? Do you believe everything you read on 'movie data base boards'?
frizille 09-26-05, 12:41 PM Well, I got my 50" 8UK hooked up. I put some DVD content through it and also some HD/SD cable. When watching cable I notice the screen flickers into static once in a while and lasts for maybe 1 second. Its a grey, with some red and green static scattered throughout. I've got to disassemble the box and move it to component to see if its the DVI blade or not (never used the DVI off the cable box before, was using component) but don't think its the Panny since DVD's are fine. Anyone see anything like this before?
technoreid 09-27-05, 01:36 AM Just wondering if they are made in Japan?

frizille 09-27-05, 11:22 AM Mine came from Japan.
TimJebsen 09-28-05, 01:29 AM I have been reading this forum for several weeks, and I am about to move forward on a purchase of a TH-42PHD8UK. I prefer the commercial version since I want to spend the money on a nice monitor with a decent size and excellent picture and quality, but don't want to spend too much on speakers and other items.
However, I want to make sure I'm on the right page with my connections. I currently have digital cable, and plan to upgrade to HD through my local provider. I already have the digital cable box, and know that I will need to upgrade the box. How will this box connect to the monitor?
I would also like to connect the DVD player to the monitor. Currently, this is a model with only S video or RGB connectors. I seem to think this might be an area where I needed an added terminal board, right?
Finally, I would like to continue to input the regular cable into my TiVo box and then input this into the monitor - could I use the S video for this since it will NOT be HD stations (it's not a HD DVR). This would allow me three "inputs":
1) HD through cable box
2) DVD player
3) TiVo with SD
Can I use the three existing inputs for this unit, or should I order an additional terminal input?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated - many thanks!

barrsurf 09-29-05, 12:44 PM Does anyone know how the commercial model stretches sd signal to 16:9. I like the consumer stretch and just wanted to make sure the commercial unit did the same. I couldn't find info on the panny site.
barrsurf 09-30-05, 10:55 AM Never mind. I found the info on aspect ratio on the Panasonic site. Drew a blank on the term aspect ratio in my last posting.
mintymintyfresh 09-30-05, 04:06 PM I got my Panny TH-42PX50U at CC about 2 months ago and I've been experience a sporadic clicking noise when watching TV (especially HD). It would click a few times every couple minutes or so. It's not a loud sound but definitely noticeable.
I've search the forums but comes up with nothing. Anybody knows if this is an isolated problem or should I contact CC about replacing it?
Also, how do you get rid of the horizontal white line at the top while watching HD source - particularly Showtime HD, and some network. I have DirecTV with the HD Tivo box.
snowjay 09-30-05, 04:41 PM Minty... are you sure the clicking isn't your Tivo box. My SA8300HD clicks... it's the hard drive writing info to the disk. I only really hear it if the TV is off (or muted) and the box is on.
mintymintyfresh 09-30-05, 07:37 PM I think you're right, the sound is not coming from the TV. It must be the darn Tivo box..... Thanks!
Slikkster 10-02-05, 10:11 AM Going to get a TH-37PX50U. Has lots of great features, but does NOT have a dedicated "PC" input VGA or DVI jack. It does have an HDMI input.
I will be connecting:
Time-Warner Sci Atlanta 8300 series HD DVR STB (has component and HDMI out)
Dell Laptop via a docking port. Port has S-Video, VGA, and DVI out.
Component output DVD player
VHS VCR
Ok, most interested in how best to get the laptop to the Panny. The Panny manual says explicitly that the HDMI input is NOT intended for PC Input use.
If I were to get a HDMI-DVI adapter, would this not be a good idea to input to the Panny? I would use Powerstrip software to match my Dell's output to the Panny input's native resolution, if necessary.
Are there issues with connecting PC's to these Panny's that don't have dedicated PC input ports? If so, is S-Video the best (and only other) choice?
Other than issues of pc's having static images, is there anything else I should be concerned about by outputting a pc to the Panny? Gaming ok?
If I went the PC -to Hdmi/DVI adapter -to HDMI in on the Panny, I would go component from the DVR box to the Panny.
Thanks for any help. Looking for answers from people who actually have this type of Panny (no pc input) vs. just the hypotheticals. Thanks for the help.
kyun7128 10-02-05, 06:16 PM I have the 50PHD7UY. It came with a blade in Input 2 that has (1) composite video, (1) S-video, (1) video out and (1) set of audio in. I have my cable box connected to the S-video and my VCR connected to the composite video in. It seems that when I have cables connected to these 2 inputs at the same time, only the S-video input works. Even when the cable box is turned off, I cannot watch from my VCR. If I disconnect the S-video cable, I can watch the VCR. I assume this means you can have only type of input for each blade and that S-video over-rides the composite video. Is this correct? If so, is there some way around it as I don't want to keep plugging and un-plugging the connectors? Thanks for any advice.
Ken
Slikkster 10-02-05, 06:25 PM The manual for the 37" I referenced above says that when S-Video cables are installed, the composite inputs are overridden. It's normal.

That's the way all Panasonics work. As far as I know, there is no way around it.
kyun7128 10-02-05, 07:37 PM That's interesting...I guess I will have to do things a bit differently. Thanks for confirming this information for me.

The 42PX500 I saw @ Future Shop said Made In Mexico... I guess that helps bring the price down considerably from manufacturing and shipping from Japan.
The Panasonic Japan website shows NEW PX50 Viera models with an SD slot and the PX500 series stand. Does anyone know what's else is new in the 'new' PX50s and how it stacks up to the PX500s?
renlopez 10-03-05, 11:41 AM Ok, most interested in how best to get the laptop to the Panny. The Panny manual says explicitly that the HDMI input is NOT intended for PC Input use.
I think that "not intended for PC input use" means that you need an HDCP compliant source for it to work. I'm not sure if your PC would qualify. Just an educated guess. You'll have to try it out for yourself.

If you wan to play back 5.1 Audio transmitted by the Over the Air HDTV content, you will need Audio out (because the ATSC tuner is in the TV)

I've decided to get a Progressive DVD/VCR combo unit, run the component outs into my Audio amplifier/switcher (along with HD cable), and run s-video directly to my Panny.
Not only does this give me the ability to run VHS through s-video, but also gives me the ability to stretch letterboxed or 4:3 DVDS (which you can't do when running through component.)

Not being able to "stretch" 4:3 DVDS is a limitation of your DVD player... not of the panny plasma. Most DVD players have the ability to stretch the video signal in their set-up. Also, the Pani should be able to perform aspect control on any 480i DVD video signal input through the component connection.
If you input everything through S video, you will not get the benefit of your HD cable.

I was thinking the same thing, myself. Some DVD players will not do progressive scan out of anything but their digital outs, too. For example, I've been thinking of the upconverting Oppo 971 box, but believe it will only do progressive scan out via digital.
I'm awaiting the 37" Panny Plasma, but I think I read about it's scaling that it can enhance already progressively-scanned dvd input. But if you output it at non-progressive 480i, I don't think you'd get the benefit from the display itself.
USCTrojan 10-06-05, 01:06 AM I bought a new Pany TH37PX50U and I tried to check the number of hours currently on the TV by going into the service menu. Well it did not work out like I thought it would and after going into the service menu and pushing "1" and "1" again, some whacky numbers started changing very fast. I have no idea what it was for (I seem to recall numbers like 3E7Y or something weird like that and possibly Y axis something). The TV looks good right now but I am worried that I may have accidently adjusted some of the factory defaults.
My question is: Does Panasonic adjust each Plasma individually at the Factory?
And could someone who knows what they are doing with the service menu provide me default or your adjusted settings for the TH37PX50U or even the 42" version (should be the same??).
Is there a way to go back to the factory defaults and should I even bother?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
