has123,
Thanks for those instructions. I'm not at the point yet I want to store video on disk, but I am trying to play r5000 recordings over a network. I am using twonkvision and I can see the server, select a video, and it plays-but it doesn't have any sound. Do you know how I can get these r5000 files to play on the ps3?
Thanks

Yes. If it is mpeg ts file run the file through TSRemux (find it in Doom9 forum) pick m2ts output (takes 2-5 min) I use TVersity as my server and I need to rename the m2ts to mpg for it to see the file. Your PS3 should be hardwired to the network. I do not have a fix so far for the h264 ts files besides a full re-encode. Hope this help,
Thanks for your reply. I have found tsremux, but am having trouble running it. I double click it and it gives an error....it does the same thing when I do start>run...I'm sure I am just doing something wrong... anything you point me towards on how to open/run the tsremux? Thanks again.
DD
I think you have to have .net framework 2.0 or higher installed. Try also to uncheck the audio async.
Thanks. Got it running. Now to test some files and see if the ps3 can play them...
Thanks again.
DD
Ran into an error. "Index outside the bounds of the array". It happened about 1/4 through ...
DD
my files are recorded with a modded E* vip 211. I had no problems with any of the ts files so far. Try run the files through mpegrepair to look for errors.
Thanks for your help on this. Got it to work and the video looked great, but every once in a while the video would judder/studder. Very sharp picture, great colors. Video was a c-band r5000 modded hd200 osremuxf cars. Sometimes starz recordings aren't perfect, so I will try an hbo file, run it through videoredo first to be sure and then run it through tsmuxer. I wish there was a setting in the r5000 dvr app that gave you an option for ps output. That would be very nice (or have sony play ts files properly).
Darin
Have you tried streaming your files with tversity or twonky or just from a burned disk?
dd
I did both. TVersity work fine but you can not do wireless. Just rename the m2ts to mpg so TVersity can see the file. The trick with nerovision is excellent because you the PS3 sees as AVCHD disc and outputs 5.1 audio and no reencoding, but you are limited with the disc size ie DVD9 max.
has123,
Worked perfectly now. Had a chance to try another program from hbo which for me has the fewest errors. Great picture. I will try a few more to make sure.... I also sent an email to the r5000 folks and asked if the dvr app could output .ps files so the ps3 could read them automatically and he replied:
"Hi,
It maybe possible to use one of the ts demux DirectShow filters (from
Elecard, etc) to convert the stream in real-time and write out a ps.
This would be connected in the preview/playback graph instead of the
current filter chain."
I want to make sure I am giving him the correct info. The files need to be .ps files with .mpg extension in order for the ps3 to correctly play them, correct? Seems like the PS3 could be the perfect r5000 client ....
Darin
Darin,
Personally I'd rather keep it in ts as I am not sure if the above applies to h264 encodes (may mess up the stream).
I just hope that at some point the ps3 can play r5000 recordings without any further processing. Maybe Sony will come through with an update that will play ts recordings properly in the next update. Until then I will play with the PS3 for fun as my r5000 recordings player, but will use my Roku as my main player. If sony can get a firmware update to play ts files it could definately be one of the best players around.
Darin
Hello all,
Easy method to burn AVCHD that play on PS3 and other BD players without any re encoding and with 5.1 audio (this works for mpeg files)
1) Run your ts file through TSRemux Bluray option.
2) Replace the index.bdmv and MovieObject.bdmv with these http://rapidshare.com/files/47821885/BDMV.rar.html.
3) Burn the BDMV directory with Nero UDF 2.5.
Your only limit is the DVD size.
Hope this helps,
Darin,
The latest TSRemux is out. Just run the files through and pick TS option and files play without a hitch (no need to rename or anything)
Thanks for the update. Will give it a try. What does tsremux do to the file that makes it work for the ps3? Is it something that nextcom could do in making r5000 ts files compatible with the ps3? Does this work for both the h.264 files and the mpeg 2 files recorded from dish?
Thanks again.

Only mpeg. If you find a way to make the h264 ts files work on PS3 short of a re-encode please let me know. (h264 files play sound only, video is black, though the PS3 sees it as AVC)
Just tried an hbo recording from c-band. Audio plays fine, but video still is "jump". The video looks so clear but every 5-10 seconds it gets jumpy. This was little miss sunshine. When I did a bob costas episode (not hd) it played without any issues. Bummer.
I burned an avchd dvd using has123 guide on dvd-5 (latest tsremux). The source is a 30 min mpeg2 recording from hdnet edited in videoredo to remove commercials. The ps3 recognizes the avc disk and video playback is clear with the exception of a few stuttering issues, and the audio is recognized as DD on the display and by my receiver, but I cannot hear anything. When I play the same avchd dvd via power dvd on the pc I get perfect playback with DD audio and without stuttering. Any suggestions? Also, I wanted to thank has123 for the help, using the ps3 as a playback device for hd archived content is a great opportunity. Thanks

The newest TSRemux supports AVCHD. Just run though Bluray option and burn BDMV folder on the parent directory of a DVD 5 or 9 use UDF 2.5 and that is it. NO need to replace any files. Also you may want to check if your file (before editing) has any problem.

Thanks for the tip. I tried it last night on a recording I had edited down with hdtv2mpeg. When I played it back on the PS3, the PS3 choked on at or near the points where I cut out the commercials. Also, I noticed that the PS3 reported that the clip was over two hours long when in fact I had edited it down to about thirty minutes.
My question is, what other program besides hdtv2mpeg works or how can I repair the edited file so that the ps3 plays the file correctly?
VideoRedo is another option.
has123,
Using tsremux to output to bluray and burning with nero works perfectly. Not a single issue during playback. Video is the best I have seen r5000 recordings look and audio is 5.1. Also ff/rew work as well. Thanks for sharing this. So the limit would be 9.4gb with a dual layer dvd. Am I correct assuming you could use this same method with a bluray burner?
Also, in case others try, I never got streaming to work without stuttering/green flashes. Hopefully sony will fix the mpeg2 hd steaming playback in the next firmware.

R5000-HD 08-23-07, 11:09 AM We get a lot of inquiries about the new DirecTV MPEG-4 receivers. After complete testing with the model H20 receiver it has been determined that a capture modification will NOT be possible. This includes both MEPG-2 and H.264 channels. Note: the model H10 is similar in design and function and cannot be modified either.
We still don't believe that the MPEG-2 channels will be disappearing anytime soon. After all its been close to 2 years since the initial reports of the MPEG-4 change-overs have been announced and a lot of us have only just started receiving H.264 locals. At some point DirecTV will get around to announcing some new national HD content and it will most likely be broadcast in MPEG-4 format. However, switching the existing core MPEG-2 HD line-up over to MPEG-4 cannot happen until a huge number of installed MPEG-2 receivers are swapped out. This will most likely will take a number of years and those of you using a R5000-HD modified DirecTV unit will continue to enjoy their recording capabilities.
In the mean time for those of you are interested in getting the most HD content from satellite, our Dish Network solutions provide full capture capability (all MEPG-2 and MPEG-4 channels). Furthermore, Dish Network holds a significant lead in the number and quality of HD offerings.

Is there an advantage to creating a AVCHD disk in Nero for mpeg2 transport streams (.ts file from R5000 on DirecTV) ?
Ran one through tsremux (0.18) today to create a BDMV and burned the BDMV directory as a UDF 2.5 (not as an AVCHD).
This resulted in a data disc. I assume for it to appear as a AVCHD disc, I need to use nerovision and do the replacement dance. It seems just burning a UDF2.5 with a .ts file would result in an easier process.
Is that correct? Anyone seen the "Idiot's Guide to moving DirecTV Mpeg2 TS files to PS3 for proper playback" on the web yet ?
Mark
R5000-HD,
Alright, so I am hooked on your system, though I have DirecTV-HD.
If I were to switch to DiSH, what equipment would you recommend?
Is the picture comparable to what I am receiving/recording now? Better? How So?
Is it possible to put the mod from my DirecTV box into a Dish unit?
Do I need to rewire/redo my setup (multi-switch [16-port], cabling, etc.)?
Thanks
jones07 08-30-07, 12:33 PM I can answer most of that.
"If I were to switch to DiSH, what equipment would you recommend?"
1)ViP 211 or ViP 411 ird
"Is the picture comparable to what I am receiving/recording now? Better? How So?"
1)Better
2) Because DirecTV-HD is the King of over compression
"Do I need to rewire/redo my setup (multi-switch [16-port], cabling, etc.)?"
1)Yep, All new hardware is needed for the switch
"Is it possible to put the mod from my DirecTV box into a Dish unit?"
1)Yep, R5000-HD with switch you up for a fee
Enrico Ng 08-30-07, 09:11 PM I just got a new cell phone and was exploring its streaming video feature. I noticed that some people use a software called SlingMedia to stream video from their TV to their phone.
I was wondering if there's a way to set that up for the R5000.
I figured the tricky part with SlingMedia is how to get the data from the sat box and how to change the channel remotely.
R5000 seems to have already done most of that, just not the streaming part
Got nero to make an avchd. I had only burned the BDMV directory contents before. This time I burned the entire output of TSremus->Blu Ray, both the BDMV and Certificate directories. The PS3 recognized as an AVCHD.
So, I take my 1280x1088i DirecTV stream and try to play it on the PS3 at 720p on a 1280x720 display. Everything was stretched vertically. What did I do wrong ?
Also, tried playing at 1080i. Same issue. I know the DirecTV streams are all 1280x1088i, do I need to transcode them with ffmpeg (clip bottom 8 pixels option) prior to burning? That seems a bit time consuming.
Thanks,
Mark
I wonder if I were to set the Dish 211 timer to "watch" a program or "switch channles" at 4am for 5 minutes everyday and get the same benefit.
Even if it worked, I would then have to keep that in mind when scheduling overnight R5000 recordings (yuck).
I have a newly modified Dish 211. Most mornings their is Dish logo and a message that says to press select to continue. Is this what others see as the powered down state?

I could not launch the program at all if I enable the remote schedule from the software , thought it was ie7, I revert to ie6, still the same.
Does anyone know what I should set bitrate to for a Dish211? I obviously want best quality but don't want to eat harddrive space if it doesn't even make a better picture. What does Dish Network broadcast at? My playback works on either setting in the R5000 PVR app. I think (might be a psychological thing) that the picture appears better on the higher setting (?), but I cannot tell for sure necessarily
There is no effect on the video quality with different bit rates. At any rate the video/audio stream is recorded as received. To get a constant rate null data is added to the stream to make it constant. A few players will only properly playback constant rate streams. This is not necessary for the MYHD card and most software players, but is for DVHS recorders and probably other 1394 devices.

Ok, so I've traded in my modified 6000 for a 211 and I can now capture the MPEG-4 stations, and view the resulting captures with Nero Showtime.
Is there a playback solution available yet for the MPEG-4 channels that satisfies all three of the following:
1) Uses a streaming media player rather than a PC for playback
2) Requires no transcoding of the video - it will either play the MPEG-2 transport stream directly, or only requires the H.264 video to be taken out of the MPEG-2 TS container and put into a different container type.
3) Provides DD5.1 output for an A/V receiver
I've seen lots of ways to do two of the three, but not all three together (like you can with a capture from the MPEG-2 channels). Are we still waiting for a streaming player that will play the H.264 streams with no re-encoding and provide DD5.1 output?

devilstaco 11-25-07, 02:01 PM Hey everyone,
I'm interested in the R5000-HD for E* or D* and am not satisfied with the information on the nextcom website; I feel their info is a little lacking. I am hoping I can find the answers I'm looking for here. Here are my questions:
1. Is the R5000-HD a hardware modification to the STB? I think it must be but its not exactly clear on the website, as the "manual" only talks about software.
2. Can I send my 'leased' or 'rented' box to have the modification made, such that I can have it removed and no one is the wiser if/when I have to turn my box back in, or do I have to send in a box I own?
3. Can anyone provide photos of what the hardware modification looks like (external STB images showing connections (USB, etc), and internal STB images showing hardware mods)?
4. How does the output exactly work? I understand it goes to the PC and is whipped up to MPG by the software, but what is output? Is it from the tuner currently being displayed by the STB, or on a second tuner (if a 2 tuner box)? Or either or both? I hope this is clear what I mean.
5. Am I right in thinking the STB can only output to the pc 1 program at a time, even if it has multiple tuners, for example to Sage? Would a second 'tuner' in Sage require a second STB?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Yes

The modifications are permanent. You can send in a box you own, or you can purchase premodded box from Nextcom
3. Can anyone provide photos of what the hardware modification looks like (external STB images showing connections (USB, etc), and internal STB images showing hardware mods)?
Don't have available, but externally all you see is an additional USB plug.
4. How does the output exactly work? I understand it goes to the PC and is whipped up to MPG by the software, but what is output? Is it from the tuner currently being displayed by the STB, or on a second tuner (if a 2 tuner box)? Or either or both? I hope this is clear what I mean.
Each modded tuner outputs 1 program - has one tuner
5. Am I right in thinking the STB can only output to the pc 1 program at a time, even if it has multiple tuners, for example to Sage? Would a second 'tuner' in Sage require a second STB?
Not sure I understand your question exactly. But each box outputs 1 program. If you have 2 boxes, for instance, you can record 2 programs.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

balazer 11-27-07, 09:18 PM The r5000 modification is not permanent. Nextcom can make a modification to a leased box such that it leaves no holes in the chassis or other externally visible marks. Nextcom will remove a modification for free, if I remember correctly. They will move a mod to new hardware for $100.

This is from Nextcom's site regarding USB card compatibility:
USB PCI Cards:
In general, USB PCI cards using NEC chipsets usually provide consistent results. Certain Asus motherboards using AMD processors have been reported as problematic. Intel motherboards with embedded USB controllers give consistently excellent results. These are some of PCI cards that have been reported to give good results:
Adaptec AUA-4000A (NEC chipset)
PPA 3-port, model 1073 (ALI chipset)
QPS 3-port, model QU2NPCI (ALI)
InTek 5-port, model TK-P5U212 (NEC)
This list is by no means complete and other cards may also provide good results. A certain amount of trial and error may be required. Also note that manufacturers have been known to substitute chipsets in the same model card depending on availablility.

autoboy70 11-29-07, 12:54 PM Yeah, I picked up an IOGear PCI USB2.0 card at Frys. I could see through the packaging so I knew it was the NEC chipset. However, this still didn't work. Should I keep trying other cards?

I use the the builtin usb 2.0 on my NF4 motherboard. Is your PCI bus overloaded or something else interfering? This shouldn't be that sensitive.

chmilar 11-30-07, 12:45 PM It took me a couple of different PCI USB boards - even with approved chipsets - before I got one that worked.
I'm using a Compaq-branded combo USB 2.0 and Firewire PCI card, and it has worked perfectly with the R5000 in a couple different PCs. It has an NEC controller chip on it.
rbest43 12-02-07, 05:58 PM Hello,
I currently use a Dish 6000 receiver and a 169time system to record MPEG2 to DVHS, and some modified SVHS, tapes. My LNB went out on my Dish 500 dish so it may be time to upgrade to the R5000. My concern is when going to MPEG4 exclusively if it makes my DVHS players unusable for new movies. I know that I can record MPEG4 to both a hard drive and to DVHS BUT can I ever play back the DVHS tapes and use a computer based MPEG4 decoder??? I was told that I might be able to play the DVHS tapes and watch them through my PC, which would be connected to my R5000 of course. I do trust the support I've received from the Nextcom fellow but I would like to hear from someone who has actually gotten the DVHS MPEG4 tapes to play and if you're fully satisfied with the output.
Or, is it possible to convert the R5000 .TS streams (I think that's what they'll be) from a hard drive to MPEG2 files, then output them somehow through firewire so I can record to DVHS?
With the number of HD channels available on Dish Network, 32 plus, I don't want to pass on the low price they're currently offering. The only thing that concerns me is that once I go MPEG4 there's no going back to MPEG2.
Has anyone tried to record MPEG4 (Divx?) to DVHS tape and been able to play the tapes for viewing in 1080i???
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Roger
Brajesh 12-04-07, 09:04 AM Another option...just capture MPEG4 to PC and author to DVD media. An HTPC or PS3 can play it back. Maybe other devices as well; I don't know. That's what I do...run the TS files through TSRemux (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=125447) (freeware), trimming the beginning & end parts (keeping just the program or movie), to generate a Blu-ray structure. Burn that to DVD media using Nero & the PS3 auto-recognizes it as AVCHD & autoplays it fine. Or, you can generate another TS file, or M2TS file, instead of Blu-ray.
You can convert MPEG4 to MPEG2 using Nero Recode or a similar tool, but a powerful PC is needed, and it takes hours. Not worth it IMHO.
Not all Dish channels are MPEG4. So, what you capture from HBO & HDNet are still easy-to-manipulate MPEG2.

You did the mod to their receiver. What do you think they are going to say when they see the insides of THEIR receiver have been tampered with Even if this mod is removable and I am not sure it is there will be evidence of where the mod was integrated.

Enrico Ng 05-25-08, 04:24 PM Is there a way to set the PVR to record every episode of a specific show? I tried linking with titantv but I can only do one at a time.
R5000-HD 05-30-08, 04:21 PM The current release of the DVR is now at version 3.0. This version most notably adds support for Windows Media Center, as described here. (http://www.nextcomwireless.com/R5000/mce.htm) Currently this special version of the DVR package is freely available for a 30-day test drive.
The R5000-HD installs as a capture device connected to a STB. This gives the ultimate in flexibility since recordings can be easily scheduled via the integrated guide and played back in Media Center. Users can pause and rewind live TV just like with any other tuner source. Recordings are the same high-quality, lossless streams that R5000 users have been used to. Standard transport streams can also be recorded along side the Media Center dvr-ms files.
In addition, support has been added for the new BEV 9242 DVR and some minor tweaks and improvements have been made over the previous release. It is recommended that all users upgrade to version 3.0, especially if trying to troubleshoot any problems experienced with earlier versions.

bwooster 10-22-08, 10:40 PM My main use for my old Proscan sat box (with the R5000) mod is to record HBO-HD. Over the last few days I noticed that recording from channel 70 (HBO-HD) no longer works. Other HD channels like CBS DO work and they show up in the guide and the R5000 can record from them.
Today I hooked the sat box up to a monitor and found that it no longer has the channel 70 in its "guide". If I use my remote to tune to channel 70 the sat box tunes to channel 71 (SHO-HD).
Channel 501 which was also HBOHD no longer works as an HD channel (it does work as an SD channel).
I have a new Directv box that I have in another room and using it I can tune to channel 70 perfectly. Interestingly enough, channel 501 is now split into two channels - a 501 HD channel and a 501 sd channel.
I talked to a directv service person and they tried changing some things on their end but it did not work at all. No more HBO-HD from the old Proscan box.
I think that what has happened is that Directv has changed their service so that HBO-HD is now transmitted as an MPEG4 stream and the old boxes cannot receive it.
So what can I do now to record HBO-HD from Directv?
Must I switch to Dish and get an R5000 modded Dish box from Nextcom?
Does anyone know if a Hughes 86 Directv sat box will work to record HBO-HD?
Thanks for any help.

It would not surprise me if Directv has dropped HBO-HD on Channel 70 and now maps it from 501. I believe they pretty much intend to get rid of everything MPEG2 in the 70-90 range.
However, there is one other possibility. When D* has made changes, there is something strange about the old RCA-DCT1000 units (which the ProScan is) where they need something special put in to make them authorize. The same thing happened first week of NFL ST last year. It would not surprise me if that is the issue.
The key is finding someone with the Hughes 86 box or perhaps a HR10-250 TIVO. Both of those could tell you if 70 is active or not and if it is the RCA-DCT1000 issue that has hit another channel. I think I MIGHT have a RCA-DCT1000 and a HR10-250 subbed but sitting offline in the garage. I'll try and find them and see if they see HBO-HD Channel 70.
BTW, I do have a E86 that is not subbed at the moment that was wired for R5000 and I had the board swapped into another unit, so I would think it would be fairly easy to swap the R5000HD board to this E86 as it would just require moving a jumper on R5000HD board and then simply pluging in the 20 pin connector that is already installed in the E86. If you are interested in that E86 for $25 plus shipping, message me.
On the other hand, if they have gotten rid of HBO-HD in MPEG2, you are pretty much out of luck.
ralphjb 10-24-08, 11:07 AM After trying the Nextcom MCE SW I decided to give up and give Sage TV a try based on everything I read here. But I can't get it working and I'm stumped. I think I have everything set up correctly from the instructions on the R5000 site. I cut and pasted all the settings for one receiver and changed the receiver entry to Dish 211. The R5000 appears to be linking up with Sage OK based on the messages at the bottom left of the R5000 window, but I don't get any recording files. All of the indications on the R5000 control panel (Bitrate, etc) seem to indicate proper operation EXCEPT file size remains at 0.
Prior to this the R5000 was working fine with MyTray, so I don't suspect a hardware problem. Where do I look next?

Not a techie expert, I am afraid. I do have this setup - have had for a long time. In fact I have an old modded DirecTV box which I use to record over the air stuff, and a modded VIP211.
If you have not already, definitely post over on the SageTV forum. Many users have your setup, and quite a few are technically proficient.
plasmamaniac 10-26-08, 05:59 PM I just tuned to Channel 70 HBO HD on my HR10-250 so it has not been remapped, still an ACTIVE MPEG-2 CHANNEL!!!
I'll keep my HR10-250s to record OTA HD material on CBS, ABC, NBC & FOX which is about 65% on my recorded material in not higher. I may trade it in next September when they come out with the NEW DIRECTIVO MPEG-4 box!!!

I am glad that your HR10-250 gets the HBOHD channel.
I just tested my old Proscan box and have found that it does not receive HBOHD on channel 70 or 509. These channels don't even show up in the on screen guide.
When you record from the channels are you getting MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 files?
I may have to switch to record from cable or dish since HBO is really important to me.
plasmamaniac 10-26-08, 07:48 PM I have an HR21-700 with a 2TB e-SATA external drive and I use my HR10-250 as a backup to record HD events such as today, I recorded Golf & Atlanta Falcons Football on my HR21-700 (Directv DVR) and then I used my HD Tivo to record the NASCAR Race at Atlanta Motor Speedway to record that event. I use OTA to record CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, etc. and I use the HR21-700 to record those HD channels that I can only get with an MPEG-4 device!!!

Several of the channels between 70 and 80 are still mpeg2. At least until about February.
Do we know if we can stop paying the monthly and still use these units for OTA ? I have a Hughes E86 that will be decommissioned when HBOHD in mpeg-2 goes away (february it sounds like). I suspect I will have to move to using the HDPVR from Hauppauge unless I switch to DishTV (which seems not worth it).

I took your advice about the other forum and now I have a couple of things to try when I can get a few free moments. Apparently it's not uncommon but the fix seems pretty easy.

Yes!
Also, you can use your HR10-250 if you connect the Directv antenna cable to it without having it activated so you can view your recorded content and OTA.
However, you will not receive any Guide Data so you will not be able to record new events but you can view your channels. To be able to record current events, you have to activate your DVR and pay the monthly fee.
R5000-HD 10-27-08, 11:44 AM Although there is no firm date yet it looks like D* is getting closer to moving all their HD content to MPEG-4. A recent change has made HBO-HD disappear from the guide of some older receivers although the channel still exists in MPEG-2 format. The solution from D* (after trying the various resets and authorization hits) is to send you out a new HD receiver free of charge. Could be an intentional change made to get the attention of older receiver owners and push them to upgrade?
For those DirecTV owners who want to still use their R5000-HD modification with Dish Network or cable, we are once again offering the upgrade/swap: click here. (http://nextcomwireless.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=66&products_id=195) Price includes the labor to swap out the modification and additional hardware to upgrade the modification.
You'll need to send us the old DirecTV modified receiver and the new box you want to modify. The old DirecTV receiver has no value to us; there is no additional discount if you want us to keep it.
plasmamaniac:

Unless you're talking about making copies via the component/composite outputs, there is no way to extract or pull the content from the drives.
-R
plasmamaniac 10-27-08, 12:31 PM Yes, you are correct. You can offload it to a DVD Burner but it has to in 480I format via the S-Video or Composite Outputs from the HR10-250.
Yes, that is considered the powered down state on a 211. I also have a 211.
I just discovered the R5000 will record content that I play back from my Dish ViP 211 external hard drive. So I can "transfer" content from the DVR drive to my PC, albeit only at 1x speed. I take it that this doesn't work on the 622/722 from their internal drive, since the Nextcom web page states:
Note: Can only capture live transmissions from the DVRs. Extraction (capturing programs from the internal drive) is not possible.
Wish someone had told me this worked a long time ago - I just assumed it didn't work.
I tried to record content with the R5000 that I played back from a Dish ViP 211 external hard drive. I was unable to capture any content. I wound up with "0 KB" size files. If there is any trick to getting this to work, I would like to know.
Odd. I tried it twice just to make sure it worked, because I really wasn't expecting it to work.
I had a 1/2hr recording of Food Network HD (have also tried this w/MPEG-2 standard definition recordings) sitting on my EHD, and I started to play it back, and then hit record in the R5000 DVR app, and it recorded it. One interesting thing I observed was that the bitrate reported by the DVR app was ~6700KB/s, as opposed to the more typical 5200KB/s I normally see. I'm assuming that's kbytes/sec, so I'm looking at an entire transponder worth of data, and picking out a single channel from that. Since 6700KB/s is more than a whole transponder, I wonder if I'm seeing the live feed, plus the recorded program somehow combined in a single transport stream.
Maybe there is something else needed to make this work, like being tuned to a channel on the same orbital location, or the same transponder as the channel the recording was made from.
I'll try some experiments this evening, and report which version of the app I'm using.
I was getting bit rates of ~9000KB/s while unsuccessfully trying to capture from the external hard drive. The recording was from one of the HBO-HD channels.
Joseph Clark 05-07-09, 01:19 AM Has anyone gotten the R5000 to work in Vista 64's Windows XP compatibility mode?
I was getting bit rates of ~9000KB/s while unsuccessfully trying to capture from the external hard drive. The recording was from one of the HBO-HD channels.
I managed to duplicate the behavior you described - and for a while, could no longer capture from a recorded program.
Tune your receiver to an SD channel before beginning playback of the recorded program. That is what seems to be key. The bitrate drops down to around 6700KB/s from 9000KB/s and the DVR app no longer displays "Waiting for stream", but is able to capture the program.
Thanks jhue, that was the solution. I tuned to an SD channel and the recording worked at ~6700KB/s bit rate. This is a great find. :)

I really liked this feature, because I liked having the ability to capture programs at any time without running my HTPC 24/7. My guess is that it would not take a lot of work to modify the R5000 program to work again in this context, but I don't think such a modification is in the cards.

I question whether it is something the R5000 has any control over in the first place. My guess is this stopped working because of either an update to the receiver's firmware, or some change in either the metadata or how Dish muxes multiple channels together onto a single transponder.

I have a 722 IRD...I searched the forum to see if it's possible to install a R5000-HD to TV2, but I didn't find any help.
I assume I also need the Dish TV2 IR converter kit to enable IR control of tuner 2, but is it possible to connect one R5000-HD to each of the two?...Or will I need two R5000-HD's to achieve picking up both streams off of TV1 and TV2? The official installation instructoins does not show how
If its the latter, then Header:14 connects to the the tip end of the IR port on the Dish TV2 IR converter....but what about "CLK", "PKT", "DA" and Header:18?? What are the pinouts to install a R5000-HD to tuner 2?

Has anybody figured another workaround to get this working again? I've only got a couple small things I wanted to transfer, but it looks like I'm dead in the water if i want to transfer from the 211's EHD.
I have found no workaround that allows you to capture the digital stream from an external drive.
Sundance 01-12-10, 07:07 PM I think on Nextcom's web site it says that you can not capture the stream from recording on the DVR's like the 722 because it's encrypted when it's recorded, unlike the raw live stream. I would think that would hold true for the external drives as well.
matt314159 01-12-10, 11:35 PM yeah it does, but it supposedly used to work, and then later stopped. Though I'm thinking it was some update that Dish did and not something nextcom did to kill it.
Mine seems to have quit working entirely today, so I've got an email into tech support. One thing I thought of trying....you know how before you had to tune it to a standard def channel? Has anyone tried putting it on a channel with little to no information, like those ones that say "Congratulations, you have a Dish 500" would that free up enough bandwith? It seemed to be dependent on the datarate of the program content on the channel you leave it on before playing back the file....just a random thought. I'd test it but I can't at the moment
This device seems interesting but doesn't seem like many are using it.
Does anyone have experience with a Bell 9242 (or Dish equivalent) and windows 7 media centre?
Is it difficult to install? I have a background in electronics engineering and access to a half decent solder station.
How well does it integrate with windows 7 media centre?
I would like to integrate this with a windows home server setup...apparantly with windows 7 you can have recordings automatically go to the home server to be available to all computers...
Thanks.
Sundance 04-26-10, 09:46 PM I want to add a external drive to my Dish 211, I have heard I can do this for I think a $40 one time fee, this in effect makes the 211 a DVR.

Will I be able to transfer my recording from the external drive via the R5000 to my HTPC?
Thanks

Thanks Matt, didn't see your post before I add the new post. That is to bad that the ability to transfer appears to be screwed up. Hopefully other will comment here so I know if it's system wide or just something that is effecting only a few. I saw another post that said Comcast was to stop supporting the Motorola 501 so there is another avenue gone. I hope Nextcom has other revenue sources because the R5000 is slowly being shut down it would seem.

I've done this to my 211. The thing you have to be careful about is recording conflicts. Recordings scheduled by the 211 for the USB drive might interfere with your R5000 recordings. I doubt you'll be able to archive the recordings once they're on a USB drive. I haven't tried it, though.
I was hoping to get a modified box for use with Charter cable, but I seem to have run into at least an obstacle and maybe a dead end. With the HD boxes without FireWire apparently long gone, I've been trying to get the HD channels authorized on a standard def box. The first time I called, I was able to get the tech support person to try manually entering the missing channels. That gave me sound on some, but not all, HD channels. As she was trying to figure out why the others weren't coming in, she realized that this was a standard def box and apparently reversed everything she had done since I ended up back where I started. My second call ended with me being told that I could only get audio from a standard def box and that I could get that from the SD version of the channel. I couldn't really argue with that without mentioning that I was planning to have my leased box modified.
Have any Charter customers here been able to get HD channels authorized? Anyone have any advice on what I should be asking for when I call? Should I just save myself some headaches and settle for imperfect component recordings with an Hauppauge HD PVR?
Thanks in advance for any input that anyone is able to provide. I hope I'm not asking anything that has already been covered to death here. I've tried doing searches for the relevant information, but I haven't had time to read through all 54 pages here, and there is a bit of a time crunch with the price of a DCT modification going up by $130 in just a few days.
Joseph Clark 06-24-10, 11:10 AM Well, after a hiatus of a few months, I'm ready to get back into recording with the R5000 and Dish 211. I downloaded and installed 3.1d from the Nextcom site. My Dish 211 is recognized, but the option to change the Remote Code is grayed out. It defaults to 1; my 211 is set to 6. I also have a Dish 622, whose code is 1 already, and which is programmed into 3 different Harmony remotes (as is the 211). I don't want to change all that.
Can't remember having this issue before, but my equipment has changed a lot. Any suggestions?
Joseph Clark 06-24-10, 07:01 PM Got my answer from Nextcom. The 211 uses a universal code to control all its functions, so there is no need to change anything. I should have known that - but, if you don't use it, you lose it. :D
Joseph Clark 06-24-10, 07:34 PM No sooner do I post than I find out my 211 is not controllable by the on-screen remote. A manual timer doesn't turn it on, either. The software wakes up, but it can't turn on the 211. It gives me a balloon warning saying to check the device status. Apparently, the universal remote code is not working for my 211. Did I miss something simple?
Joseph Clark 07-07-10, 10:31 PM I sent my 211 in for repair. Got it back and had the same problem. I found out that my Niles whole house IR system was causing interference in the 211. It's working fine now (except for the part about not being able to control it via infrared).
I've run into another problem, but no response back from Nextcom yet. When I do a manual recording, everything is fine. I recorded some of Warehouse 13's reruns yesterday, to see if it would record properly. Everything worked fine. I then set up a timed recording via TitanTV. When I tried to play it back, I got audio but no video. It tuned in Syfy at the right time, but unlike the manual recording, the timed recording has video that I can't play. Audio is fine.
Any thoughts?
Have you tried another timed recording to see if the problem is persistent? Also I would try running the file through TSreader and MPEG@Repair to see if video can be recovered.
John

John
I'm doing another timed recording right now. If I can't get Warehouse 13 to play, there's a rerun of the premiere next week just before the second episode.
I have run into yet another problem, though. I deleted Warehouse 13 from my list of recordings and tried to re-enter it. Even though it's gone from the event list, it won't let me enter the event again. It indicates there's a conflict with another recording at that time. I seem to remember running into this a long time ago, but I can't remember the resolution. (I've been away from using the R5000 for probably a couple of years.) Any thoughts?
Joseph Clark 07-08-10, 11:27 PM OK, my timed recording worked this time around, so I guess I'm alright.
Also, I ran Warehouse 13 through tsMuxer (AVCHD mode) and it created an mt2s file that allowed me to play the video and audio. Thanks for that suggestion. I tell you, I'm really rusty with this stuff. It's amazing what I've forgotten in a relatively short period of time.
I got around the inability to record in the same time slot as a deleted event by deleting ALL the events. That's a crazy solution, though. It sure won't work well if I have a lot of scheduled events. Re-entering all of them would be a real hassle.
Oh, well, at least I'm set up to record Eureka tomorrow night. I didn't want to miss the season premiere.
I am using 3.0c of the multi/SAGE DVR and 2.4G of the PVR. I tried the newer versions and had a problem so went back to the above ones which seem to do everything I need OK.
