My TiVos can do manual recording. Why would it be a step back for a Moxi DVR to be able to do that?
And I wasn't blaming Moxi for the guide data issue. Sorry if it sounded that way. I was just looking for suggestions to overcome this annoyance.
abcward 10-08-04, 06:39 PM I dont understand what manual task that you guys cannot accomplish. For example, if I want to record a certain football game on Sunday, I find it thru the search function and chose to record once. Am I missing something?
belsokar 10-08-04, 07:11 PM some channels aren't always accurate with their guides...so I might just want to say, record channel 53 from 6pm-8:30pm.
Maybe there is breaking news on a channel, and I want to just record it for 3-4 hours...its not in the guide, but I still may want to just hit record, specify a determined stop time...and let it go.
Maybe I know a channel posts lottery numbers every evening between 6:55pm and 7:00pm, irregardless of what program is on, and I just want to record a 5 minute segment on that channel daily without recording entire programs...
the possibilities are endless,...95% of my recording is accomplished with the record series option...but from time to time, a strange scenario comes up where I just want to setup my own custom recording and not have to work with the existing scheduler...
Well, they said "manual recording" refering to "timer recording" the old way we setup the VCR's recording, but you are right with the Guide we programing the events not the timer. But in the case that the EPG have errors, they want a timer and channel setup like the VCRs but that feature is not very usual and maybe could gives more problems than a solution, specially with a double tuner device like Moxi.
The Moxi you can do MANUAL RECORDING when the program starts, push the record button or the info menu. But I really think that we are not missing nothing not having a TIMER RECORDING feature on the MOXI, so other DVRs can have too.
TRADE
jasonsirota 10-08-04, 07:17 PM I think a timer recording is VERY useful. Take for example the problem with the Daily Show on comedy central. Comedy central airs the daily show 3 times a day: the new one is at 11pm and then it plays 2 repeats, at 1 am and at 2pm the next day. Comedy central also doesn't update their repeat flag on the encore presentations so if you record the series (season pass on tivo) then you get 3 a day and you have to delete.
I set a manual recording on Tivo to get just the 11pm show every night at 11 on Comedy Central. I don't have a moxi box yet (I have a motorola 6208 which is such crap, waiting for adelphia to roll out HD in my new house). Maybe there's a different way of doing this on Moxi?

You're right -- Video On Demand is not currently working, and there are apparently issues with MusicChoice now too. Oh, and people who get the box as part of the pilot program get it free for the first month. Neat.
Very much looking forward to it!
In the Moxi you have the option of not record repeats, maybe if your record at 11:00 PM or whate ever hour on that day you will get only one episode by day.
How the Daily Show repeats are to the next day maybe you won't have problems, but I will try in my Moxi to see that happens.
TRADE
belsokar 10-08-04, 07:39 PM actually he is correct...with the moxi, (before the latest upgrade that is), if I selected First-Run series as a recording option, it still recorded everything on that channel with the same title...
according to moxi-guy's thread on the latest updates, this might be fixed by now looking at the title, and description....the easiest way to tell this is on MTV where shows like the real world play like 8 times a day, and more when there's a marathon! If its not fixed, a bit of advice to those of you recording shows that may play alot, or are often part of a marathon, place the priority of those shows as the lowest, or else they might preclude the recording of a more important show to you!
trade - jason's problem is in relation to ComedyCentral not updating their repeat flag so the box saw all three episodes as first run.
I think the ability to record breaking news is a bonifide reason to be able to just either set a timer or record and save on the fly. It would also be helpful if there was a way to save something the unit has recorded into its buffer - ie you come home to find something on tv that you didn't expect and since the box has been on it has recorded the first 30/40/50 etc minutes that you missed and you want to save it so you can watch it later. I think it would be a handy feature to have, though, I'll take more storage first. :-)
ricknroll 10-09-04, 12:06 AM Hey MoxiGuy:
I came across an interesting "issue" this evening, with the newest update (3.0.75LR-P74289). While watching a live program that I wasn't recording, I caught up to live and figured I'd let the program spool for a few minutes while I watched part of another show that I'd previously recorded. I paused the live show, pressed zoom, switched to the recorded programs menu and started another show. A few minutes later, I pressed the Live TV button. I expected to return to the program I was watching earlier. Instead, MOXI changed the channel to the channel of the previously recorded program I'd been watching, even though that show was recorded three days ago. Seems like a "bug" to me, but I didn't see it in the "known issues" so I thought I'd post. Let me know if it's just "user error".
- Rick
Rick - Same thing just happened to me this evening. The unit changed the channel to the recorded program from the one it was on live tv.
Also, the issue noted above with the recording of repeats when first-run is selected -is- still occurring. Even though it is set to first-run my deck is still recording every syndicated run of the Simpsons and the late night syndication of CSI. Thought it was fixed but no...
I'm not Moxiguy, but I don't believe that this is a bug. I suspect that the Moxi Box counts the DVR as another channel. If that is the case, then I suspect that the box would ignore your earlier pausing of the channel.
As I am sure that you know, if you are not actively recording a channel and you tune away from it, the Moxi box will stop recording it, regardless if you hit the pause button. As noted above, I suspect that the box considers your starting a pre-recorded show as changing the channel.
What you may try to do next time is to change the channel for a second, return to your show and hit record. As you tuned away from the channel, the Moxi Box will stop it's background recording, and start back again after you have changed the channel. As you are actively recording the show, you can then start your pre-recorded show and return (through the recorded shows menu) to the show that you were watching live.
Just an idea.
I agree that it would be nice if the Moxi Box would not stop the background recording when you pause a channel and then change it. Either that, or not count starting the DVR as a channel change.

Moxiguy - Another glitch, though minor, is that when you already have a series set to record and go in to edit the Recording Options the Moxi will reset the series priority to first on the list regardless on where it was. ie - I went in to change a series that was #15 on the priority list from unlimited episodes to 3 and when I saved it its priority jumped from #15 to #1 and I had to manually go back in a reset its priority. Changing recording options should not effect priority. Apologies if this has already been posted - I don't remember seeing it and didn't feel like going back through 14 pages again.
GlendaleHDTV 10-12-04, 03:56 PM I'm having occasional audio issues (probably three times in the two weeks I've had the box) with the moxi. I will be watching a program (it's happened on recorded as well as "live" programming), and all of a sudden I will totally lose the audio for 5 or 10 seconds. If I rewind and play the part over again, the audio will play with no problem. My current solution is to just hit pause whenever it happens, and then when I hit play the problem will have gone away, but this obviously isn't the ideal solution. Any ideas on what may be causing this? I'm a Charter-St. Louis subscriber, and am just running the audio through the TV, no surround sound setup.

I had the same problem, at a much greater frequency. However, it was resolved when the software update was released here in So. California (Adelphia).
I just got my second moxi box installed tonight and I must say I love these boxes. I've got 2 of the Motorola BMC9012 and I'm getting rid of my Tivo series 2. I love the interface and the quality of the digital SD + HDTV recordings is as good as the actual broadcast to me. As for the analog encoding, it's as good as my series 2 Tivo to me. I get 2 boxes from Charter for an extra $6.00 a month and I get to ditch the $12.95 Tivo subscription + the clutter on top of my tv has been replaced with one box. If Moxi is available in your area, I strongly recommend you guys give it a shot. If you've ever owned a Tivo, it's a smooth transition in my opinion and you get to record HD. The only thing that I really miss from the Tivo is the 15-20 second jump back after hitting play from fast fowarding through comercials. Moxi Guy, is this something that you guys could possibly add in a future update. Also, when you guys turn on the native pass thru on these units is there any way you could make that an option? I'm actually glad to see the MOXI box stretch the 4:3 material when upconverting to 1080i because my projector actually prevents me from stretching 4:3 while viewing 1080i. So, if you could make it an option that we can toggle on or off then you could please everyone.
Thanks for listening and keep the updates coming!!

In next update with passthrough, you can check off as few or as many resolutions as you like (provided your TV can "see" them). If you want to keep everything at 16:9, check 1080i (or 720p) only and leave 480i and 480p unchecked. The jumpback is on our list, but I'm not sure when we will get to it.
Dizzman 10-13-04, 02:59 PM in my case i think it might be an Adelphia issue. I have never had an SD channel record correctly. THey are very staticy... like poor reception. (or no reception with the higher channels) but i recorded an HD show no problems and then watched it with the SD output. Actually i prefer the networks like this as it looks FAR better.
Has anybody had the recording issue? Also from time to time i switch to an SD channel and there is no audio. I switch away then back and my audio is present.
Also, i would LOVE the ability to customize the various channel lists. I do not want to remove EVERYTHING from my regular list, but i may want to customize the other lists like favourites and movies (i do not want to watch spanish movies)
And the ability to ALWAYS output the composite and S no matter what the compoenent settings are (HD or SD) is going to be neccesary for most. This way the regular TV can be hooked up and you do not need to change settings when turning on the projector. To that end also... a second set of audio (RCA Jacks) outputs would be nice.
Creditmaster 10-13-04, 04:39 PM One thing I miss from my old cable box that Moxi doesn't do is when I am looking ahead to shows on in the next few hours and I find one I want to watch, there is is no 'reminder' feature. I used to use that feature on my old moto 5100 all the time. I could have Moxi record it of course, but I just want it to give me a reminder so I can tune to it.
MoxiGuy, you may recall from earlier discussion that my Samsung TV has two sets of component video inputs. One accepts 480i/480p and the other 480p/720p/1080i. When the video pass-through is available, I am going to check off 480p, 720p and 1080i. How is 480i content going to be handled? Is it going to get converted to 480p or some other format? Will it be stretched or OAR?

Yeah, that was very useful feature, also I wish to have a next presentation option in the record menu, this will be to movies or documentaries that not are series.
Let me explain, when I got a Discovery program or a movie started, I want record it, but the record menu only give the option to record this showing, instead many movies or programs are repeating on other channels or another days. You can say, go to the find and search but this is more complicated that if Moxi made the search to me. I think that the cable guide had this optiom also.
MoxiGuy do you know if my SAP audio will come back with the next upgrade?
Thanks

Creditmaster 10-14-04, 04:21 PM The software update has come out to Charter in Mankato!!! I've only just gotten it and haven't played with it much. The program guide was not showing current program info so i went in to trigger a programming update, but had to go back to work before seeing if it worked. But the HD filter is there, the speed of the menus was noticable and the 3 next shows on the flipbar were there.
MoxiGuy 10-14-04, 07:32 PM Originally posted by trade ...I wish to have a next presentation option in the record menu... do you know if my SAP audio will come back with the next upgrade...The ability to look at upcoming broadcasts of a movie or other program on the menu will be included in a future update planned for early in 2005.
As for Closed Captions, I've checked a number of boxes here, and Closed Captions are working both in live and recorded programs, on both analog and recorded shows. Are you sure you have enabled closed captions in the Settings menu? With alternate language tracks, analog and digital stations work differently.
SAP gets more complex: With analog stations (usually below 100) if a SAP program is available you must choose SAP before you record. We can only record one audio program on analog. One problem we've run into has nothing to do with Moxi or the BMC. It turns out that some stations will leave the SAP carrier on even if there is no program with a second audio program. The result is that when you try to listen to SAP, you get silence. (I've tried this with a direct feed from the cable into my TV tuner, bypassing the BMC. Many channels are just silent when you set the tuner to the SAP channel.). But if there is a SAP program present, you should be able to turn on SAP (before recording) and record it.
In the digital channels, there's more flexibility. Multiple audio tracks can be encoded in the broadcast. If they are present, they will all record. It's not necessary to choose a language before making the recording. you can switch tracks on the fly--either when you are watching live, or when playing backa recording. It works like changing audio tracks on a DVD. The digital language switching is planned for our next release.
cavenger 10-14-04, 07:45 PM No software update yet here in Birmingham, AL. Too bad....I really want the update to see the differences. There are some definate issues with this version as we have all discussed. This does indeed remind me of the early TIVO days.
Thanks..

Thanks Moxiguy for the imformation
Close Captions is working now and maybe was a glitch.
SAP, there's a way in the remote control that you can put a switcher in the next release, you are right the analog channels give silence in certain channels but that present other problem because if activate the SAP to record certain programs and left in that way the others only will record silence. Could be useful have a option to choose SAP on this recording setup, but maybe will be more hard to program in the code.
Could you explain more about the digital language switching, what will be that?
I talked with Adelphia today and the CS representative told me about the Moxi extension that I would buy from a third part, Motorola started to selling it?

MoxiGuy 10-15-04, 11:56 AM Possible, yes. We're tracking the demand for a PAP or PIP feature and may consider it in a future version.
abcward 10-15-04, 12:08 PM Count me as one vote for PIP...
I think that feature will be awesome, because I have connected my Moxi via Compenent Video and my TV only give PIP on the Video and S-Video inputs.
What is PAP?
TRADE
GlendaleHDTV 10-15-04, 01:10 PM PAP = Picture AND Picture (i.e. two pictures side by side, etc. instead of one picture with a little box containing the other picture, which is PIP)
abcward 10-15-04, 02:15 PM PAP is ideal for the 16:9 tv's that many of us have. I have never been able to use that function on my Toshiba because of how Charter's box has been set up.
Having that option would be a great bonus.
Adelphia is rolling out the Ticker on the Moxi boxes. Data is only available on a few of the categories now but it appears as a handy new way to obtain information on demand.

I'm not moxiguy, but when I talked to the Charter-St. Louis Moxi expert (the infamous "Marty"), he made it sound like it was Charter's issue (I think he said something like "We haven't built that yet"). Maybe Moxiguy can confirm whose issue it is (moxi vs. charter).

My TV does PIP and PAP (actually, it lets you scale the size of the windows to the size you desire). I personally use a split from the cable (before the Moxi box) to feed the second window. I doubt that I would use the Moxi to split it.

MoxiGuy 10-15-04, 05:12 PM bgooch: That may have been a temporary anomaly. Sort of the Ticker clearing its throat. But it's coming real soon. With all the data. ClemGuy 10-15-04, 06:15 PM :D That's how I feel when I mess with my new Moxi.
I'd like a "SCIFI" category. Or maybe a "my" category. I had to dig around a bit to find some things in the premium channel menus. HBO and ShowTime series were a bit hard to find.
One bit of confusion I've had. After setting up multiple recordings, I went to watch something else. Well, I had two things set to record right then, so both tuners were busy. The box brought up an option to cancel one of the recordings, but there was nothing to let me just switch and watch one of them. I had to read the channel number and enter it manually to let the box switch to what was being recorded on the other tuner.
LOL. I haven't had it a week, and already I want a 4 tuner box.
I don't have HDTV yet, so I'm well impressed with the picture quality on my old Motorola. All channels look just great ;-)
I think I've been thinking about plugging a hard drive into my box to see what happens. Anyone done this? The usb ports are supposed to be on, as the picture download function requires them.
Hey, Moxiguy, is that big flat plate in front where the DVD drive is installed in that model? Maybe a little pry with a driver and I can put in my own? Just kidding. But I know that's why so many people want to buy their own box, so they can experiment. I don't feel like writing a big check to Charter to replace mine after a little brain salad surgery.
QUESTION: Does the ethernet outlet in the back give me internet access yet? I seem to remember seeing something about it being able to act as a modem interface so you didn't have to have a separate cable modem. That would be great! More for redundancy than anything else. It would be nice to connect my laptop there and not have to deal with a weak wireless signal when it rains.

Has anyone noticed a slight shift in color towards red/magenta on their Moxi picture compared to a direct signal? Also, some shadow areas become very dark and lose detail.
I have a Mitsubishi 52725 DLP with the Moxi box and a Cable Card also installed (I can record 2 shows and watch a 3rd, or get PIP). Although the Mits allows you to adjust your color settings for each input separately, I have set both the CC input and Moxi input to the same color settings using the settings I achieved from the Avia DVD.
The picture I attached, shows the CC picture on the left and the Moxi picture on the right, using the POP feature on the Mits to show them at the same time side by side (there is a fraction of a delay from one picture to the next). The Moxi box video output was set to 480i, otherwise the picture would be stretched. The movie was playing on HBO (the red shift shows up on all channels). I can't adjust the color settings side by side to make a comparison and anytime I try to bring the red/magenta settings down, it still doesn't look right.
I like using the features of the Moxi box (ie. pause, rewind) while I am watching a show, but find myself going back to the CC to get a better picture and only use the Moxi box to record something I can't watch live.
If anyone has experienced this or knows a possible fix, I thank you in advance for any help.
Phil

You can then move it around, change the food and then throw it at the screen and it "splats." Clear will clear the screen of your mess.
I can confirm it works. I think you have to be in the moxi menu when you start the "back, next, etc." routine. You then can use back and next to cycle through the food choices (pie, tomato, lemon, strawberry, egg, etc) and OK to throw. Not sure why they put this in there (moxiguy?) but it may come in handy if you're watching a particularly bad program:D .

Hey Clemguy,
Not that I would ever doubt Moxiguy, but for those of you who still wonder, I tried this a few days ago - every port and every possible way. Nothing!
I hope expansion is possible soon, 80 gigs goes really really fast when recording HD. And, let's face it, there are tons of great ways to record 480i. The only thing that really makes the Moxi special is that it can handle HD.
P.S. If there are any marketing types out there, I don't think I'm the only geeky guy who's been dreaming of a nice terabyte+ HD video server for years. Build a rack with lots of empty slots for proprietary expansion drives. Charge a reasonable premium over regular $/gig rates (remember, geeks know what a gig is worth) and you'll have an absolutely killer product.
QLguy
All the people that is waiting get USB 2.0 port available. I told before that Motorola have a product with hard disk and DVD drive to use with the Moxi box.
Now that Moxiguy said that if the ports could be availble the matter is the drivers requested, I think that other USB Hard disk will not work in that USB ports.
So, you will need buy or rent Moxi Plus from your provider or Motorola and forget download a copy to your computer or DVD recorder.
The other feature, cable modem and home networking coudl be interesting know what will be the plans that Motorolo will offer with Moxi. I have doubts that we can streams MP3 or AVis to our Moxi
TRADE
MoxiGuy has not been very clear as to if the usb ports will be available for direct hookup to a usb hdd that would then be formatted by the Moxi box to be used as additional storage or if it will only be through this MoxiPlus box. As QLguy says, most of us here know the value of a gig and to pay what may end up being 10x that amount for a box that may do more when all we want is storage will just be bad. Hell, if you did nothing else to the box from this point on except add storage I'd be reasonably content. If the MoxiPlus add on, particularly as yet another piece of rental equipment to add to my already inflated cable bill, is the only way storage can be added then it'll just end up being another box that almost got it.

As with others above, my ticker has full functionality (with all of the weather, sports, news, etc. )
The Easter Egg also works. 8^)
Once internet access becomes available on the box (and drivers for wireless mouse and keyboard), I will never be able to replace my couch as my butt will be permanently attached to it.
Woke up this morning, the Moxi Box was just sitting there "flickering" (both the screen and the front display. I had to unplug it as the power button was not working. Plugged it in (waited for the reboot) and the ticker was gone.
I am guessing that it was a trial run.
Adam Tyner 10-17-04, 11:32 AM I may have gotten an update this morning -- I just got my Moxi yesterday morning, and I'm seeing an "HDTV" icon now that I don't recall having seen yesterday. Dunno if it's related to this apparent update or not, but all of my programming data disappeared. Nothing's listed under any of the categories, I can't search for any titles or keywords, nothing's listed as airing on any of the channels...hmmm. Hopefully it'll pop back up again momentarily. Rebooting didn't seem to do anything.
Has anyone noticed a slight shift in color towards red/magenta on their Moxi picture compared to a direct signal? Also, some shadow areas become very dark and lose detail (look at the womans jacket).
Phil

abcward 10-18-04, 10:20 AM MoxiGuy,
I have been informed by other St. Louis customers that they are now receiving VOD thru the Moxi. I checked my box and I still cannot get VOD. Is this an upgrade that has just not been sent to my box yet?
Is there any way that I can trigger the software update?
Thanks
After playing with my box over the weekend, I'm pretty impressed. This is the first time I've used any kind of DVR so I can't make a comparison, but I can't say that I'm dissapointed.
A couple things that I think would be nice additions.
1. The ability to extend the recording time of scheduled program while it's recording. I ran into this issue while recording the Purdue - Wisconsin game this weekend. I had even set it to run 30 minutes past the scheduled end time, but the game started run pretty long and I wanted to extend the recording until the game was over, but wasn't able to do so. I just had to start recording the next scheduled program, then stop it on my own.
2. I think it would be nice to have frame by frame advance if that's possible.
Other than that I'm really happy. Keep up the good work.

There are a few different triggers you can activiate in the maintenance menu. If I remember correctly pushing, "OK and Menu" at the same time on the box itself will bring you to the menu. From there I don't remember exactly where the triggers are, but you should be able to tell pretty easily once you're in the menu. From what I remember there are quite a few triggers and a couple specifically for VOD.
Good luck.
Hi!
I now live in Anderson, SC, and Charter Cable is rolling out Moxi DVR's on October 20. I'm having mine delivered tonight on a pre-rollout beta. (Whee!) I'm a very long-time ReplayTV user and proponent, so I'll no doubt end up posting (in another thread) my impressions of Moxi vs. ReplayTV, but that's for another day...
That said, after reading through the many Moxi-related .pdf files available on the Digeo site, I am thoroughly intrigued not only by the basic feature set which will probably be included by Charter Cable, but features and add-ons that are (or may eventually be) available (depending on what the Cable Provider provisions.)
For example, there is the "Moxi Plus" offering extended HDD space, a Memory Card reader, and possible DVD-burning capabilities. I currently use a ReplayTV model 5040 to record, upload to PC and burn shows to DVD. It's kludgy, but it works.
Then there is also information on the "Moxi Mate" which I REALLY think is cool. Now THAT is something I would like to add on. Having a networked, interoperable DVR system in our living roon and our bedroom would certainly be very nice and worth the cost.
OK, while I may be jumping the gun here because (I haven't even had the box installed--it comes tonight!) but if I wanted to take advantage of some of these other features or add-ons, how would I go about getting my cable company to provide them? Unfortunatly, Anderson, SC is a small town, and I suspect that we probably don't have much "pull" with the big cable companies, but at the same time, maybe we would be a good market to test new features? All I can say is that three out of the eight people in the IT department where I work have already signed up for Charter's Moxi DVR service, and two others are awaiting our verdicts, so there is an obvious demand (at least among several tech-savvy people.) I know nothing about the politics of cable systems other than the typical consumer perspective, so maybe someone here could shed some light or give some insights on how we could push this technology forward and get more features and add-ons implemented.
Thanks for listening!
wilkemp 10-18-04, 04:11 PM Jbarr, my in-laws live in Mauldin and Greenville, as far as Charter and future offerings, many of us are thankful that we at least have the basic Moxi box which still isn't available in all of there service areas. With the state of Charter's financial situation and the fact that they still haven't added all the available local digital channels in most areas, I would tend to think no matter who tries to light a fire under them the Moxi mates are a long, long, way off
Just my opinion

Strange. During the first day I had my box on, I could get to VOD just fine. After the new software uploaded the next day (w/HD selections) it stopped.

Hi Jim
Welcome aboard!! Your experience with ReplayTV is a good asset to us....
I think that in this moment ReplayTV and Moxi are complementing, specially that Moxi doesn't offer any option to record outside the box and have certain glitchs with the audio and interface.
The Moxi Plus is not available yet, but I don't think that will have a DVD Burner instead a DVD Player, so the Hard drive capacity is a problem that we are having with Moxi.
The Moxi Mate has a price of $75 and I think that will be available from Motorola in short term. But sharing the small Moxi hard drive could be a trouble, but like a replacement of another Moxi box will be more cheaper.
My cable provider (Adelphia) charges $15 to each additional Moxi, using the ReplayTV I can record more hours and pay less.
Now I got a ReplayTV and I was wondering use it with my Moxi, my TV have 2 coax inputs and I was wondering if you will do the same. I want use the Moxi to record HDTV and digital channels, and let the ReplayTV to record the local channels series.
The Moxi have a cable modem inside but the ethernet port is not enable yet. I hope that you can share your experiences about using both PVRs.

IfixitBIG 10-18-04, 11:19 PM Jim, and all you Moxi folks, I hope your Charter PVR's work well. I've been trying to get in on the BETA testing with no luck... and I work for Charter! We have to wait a couple of weeks or months so the public can get their orders filled. I guess I can see that. Looking forward to hearing how you like the Moxi, and how it works!
johnmark 10-19-04, 08:56 AM I am not sure if this has been reported before. I just got a Charter Moxi and I have found that the SD picture is much better using 480i vs 480p. 480p is so bad that it is unwatchable.
Other then this I am very happy with the Moxi. One of the main reasons I got it was the support that Moxiguy gives on this board. This should be a lesson on how to use forums like AVS to promote products and stay in touch with the customers.
Just got the moxi in St. Louis. For some reason on some of my HD channels are showing up so Charter is sending out a new box. Other than that, I'm fairly happy with it. I guess I was expecting the worst with the SD channels, as I don't find them that bad.
What remotes does everyone use with it? This is my first DVR and am looking for a decent priced remote to control this, the tv, and the receiver?
Thanks,
Tim

Could you clarify?
When I got the Moxi this past weekend, I wasn't getting any of the premium HD channels. I could get my locals, but not ESPN-HD, HBO-HD, HDNet, or HDNet Movies -- I kept getting a screen saying that I wasn't a subscriber. I was tossed around on the phone to several different people, and I was talking to Person #5 before the problem was resolved. It turned out that the codes Charter sends to these boxes to indicate that I'm an HD subscriber is different for the Moxis than my previous Motorola box. They were sending out both codes to me, and that was causing a conflict. Once they dropped the old code, I was able to start getting those channels again. I'm not sure if your symptoms are the same as what I was experiencing, but if it is, maybe you could describe what I just rattled off to someone on the phone.
(I also informed Charter a few days ago that the program guide here in Greenville has two channels switched; it lists 770 as HDNet Movies and 771 as HDNet when it's the other way around. Less significant, but OMAX has a PPV icon instead of the usual logo. I'm not sure when this is going to be fixed or even who in the chain is responsible for that, but hopefully it'll be addressed soon.)

Tim I use the Sony RM-AV3000 learning remote for all my equipment. I realize that $200 might be a bit high for some budgets but I got tired of getting inexpensive remotes that worked 'most' of my equipment, but never all of it. This learning remote learns ANY code from any remote I have tossed in front of it....even ceiling fans.
I also have a couple friends who swear by the Philips Pronto.
A fantastic resource for remote is http://www.remotecentral.com - it has reviews, specs, forums, etc for just about every good remote on the planet.
Adam,
I get FOXHD and NBCHD and nothing else. It's like they aren't even there. If I scroll down from FOXHD (782) it goes all the way down to channel 730. If I manually punch in 770 (HDNET) it doesn't do anything. I could possibly understand getting the locals and not premium channels, but I can't get CBSHD (784) either. You would think it would be all or nothing.

I tried this last night, as I am in St. Louis and don't have VOD either. The two VOD triggers in the maintenance menu are something like "trigger VOD configuration" and "Trigger VOD Metafile download". I tried both of them and nothing happend. I think Moxiguy stated earlier in this thread that the cable company has to send down updates, there is nothing you can do to trigger them earlier.:(

First off, thanks for the welcome. I am a long-time ReplayTV owner (I own three), and I operate a hobby Web site (http://JimsTips.com) where I have been providing Tips & Tricks for various hobbies that interest me (like ReplayTV, Gmail, Palm PDA's, etc.) Needless to say, my DVR perspective is very ReplayTV-centric, so comparisons are inevitable. Also, I realize that this is an HDTV forum, and I do NOT have an HDTV (yet) ;) so I won't be commenting on Moxi's HD aspects.
I also find it cool that there are as many Anderson/Greenville area people here. Maybe we should start a local user's group!
Anyway, the Cable installer came last night and installed a new Moxi box, and I have to say I'm quite impressed! Here are some "first impressions" of my new Moxi.
INSTALLATION
This was only the second box that the installer installed, but the install was a simple no-brainer: Connect the TV to the box, Connect the Cable to the box, Plug in box, and call Charter to provision the box. Moxi booted and we could watch Live TV almost immediatly. Unfortunatly, the Channel data wouldn't populate, and the technician on the phone told the installer that it typically takes 15 to 20 minutes, and up to an hour for everything to download. Having a similar experience when installing my Cable Mode, on faith I signed off, the installer left, and I waited. About two hours later, it was still in the same state, so I hit the Reset button (labeled "Power" on the front--go figure.) and when Moxi rebooted, all channel guide data was populated and everything ran smoothly! Wheee!
By the way, does anyone know if Charter (or Moxi/Degio) has any "Feedback" email address for "pilot" users? I have some installation and provisioning suggestions that might help in future installs...
GENERAL OPERATION
Generally, the Moxi seems to be a very full-featured DVR. The UI is slick and reminds me a bit of a cross between TiVo and Windows Media Center. The animation is pleasing but not distracting. I do find the sound effects to be annoying, but there is a Setting to control that. Remote response seems quick and responsive. Changing channels is almost instantaneous unlike my ReplayTV box which takes 3-5 seconds to change the channel.
I also LOVE the fact that Moxi has two tuners. This alone is a huge sell for me. Being able to hit Record and then tune to another channel is very nice--something ReplayTV cannot do. And the dual tuner feature is transparant. Initially, I though that ther would be some "cue" as to what tuner I was viewing, but it turns out that it simply doesn't matter. Recording becomes a background function instead of a foreground function. No doubt, I'll be wanting a third tuner soon... ;)
Finding shows is cool. I like the fact that the full list of shows is presented (some 14,000) and as you select the letters, the list "narrows down" displaying only those that match the letter sequence. As I understand it, this is similar to how TiVo does it. It's fast and doesn't always require typing the entire keyword. Very nice.
I have more observations, but I'll save those for later a posting.
SUGGESTIONS
Now for the inevitable suggestions. There are a few things that I find do annoying about the interface...
1. "Channel List" function in Settings
By default, Moxi includes ALL available channels, including those that are "unavailable" (ie: TBA) To remove these channels, it's a simple process of scrolling to the channel and pressing "OK" to "uncheck" the channel. Simple, but it takes a L-O-N-G time! Down arrow, ckick OK. Wait. Down Arrow, Click OK. Wait. etc. With literally hundreds of channels that must be unchecked, the current implementation is very tedious and time-consuming. Fortunatly, I'll only have to do it once. How about considering ReplayTV's method where you press "OK" and the channel gets "unchecked" and then it auto-scrolls to the next channel. This way, you only have to repeatedly press "OK". My experience with UI's has typically shown me that the fewer the button presses, the better.
2. Sort order in the Channel menu
In my opinion, the channels are incorrectly sorted in "reverse" order which seems very unusual to me. By this, I mean that lower numbered channels are "at the bottom" of the list and higher numbered channels are "at the top". Because of things like ReplayTV's Channel Guide, Charter's Digital Cable Guide, the paper TV Guide, and just about every other sorted list, I'm very used to the lowest-numbered channels at the top of the list. Even on computers, lists tend to be sorted in ascending order. It would be nice to either have it reversed by default or offer a Setting to let us select the sort order.
3. Channel Menu does not contain channel numbers
I found it interesting that the Channel Menu does not list channel numbers, but just the icons. Yes, the highlighted channel does display the number, but again, coming from the "grid-based" world, this seems strange that the numbers are missing from the other listed channels. Screen real estate is always at a HUGE premium, so it does make some since, and I guess I could see the logic in omiting them (for example, if there is a lineup change, you don't have to worry about new channel numbers--you just look at the icons.) But given that you can "direct-access" channels in many places by keying the numbers, the lack of visible numbers is strange.
4. What's up with the "Back" button?
I know that this may have been addressed in the latest build, but I find it annoying that the "Back" button doesn't do what I would intuitivly expect it to do: Take you back to the last performed operation. It seems that backing out of functions varies depending on the function. Sometimes I have to hit the Info button to dismiss a screen. Sometimes I have to hit the Moxi button. Sometimes, it's the Clear button. It would be nice if a button like "Back" would consistently take you back.
Note that all of my suggestions are basically "UI-related" suggestions. Overall, the UI is very functional and pleasing to use. Obviously, it's a mindset change from ReplayTV, but it's certainly something I'll get used to. It reminds me more of a hybrid of TiVo and Media Center. That said other available functionality and how that functionality works is pretty solid.
OK, I'm done for now. I'll post more "findings" later, especially after my wife takes some time with it...
bwilcox 10-20-04, 02:36 PM WOW. I'm pretty new to this forum and I hadn't realized this thread was here. Awfully good info, guys, and much appreciated. Thank all of you for the posts.
I'm a recent MOXI inductee as well and it is my first experience with a DVR of any sort. With the exception of most of the short comings noted here (especially the lack of external drive support, lack of DVI support, lack of network support, the "remind" function for future programs) I'm a believer!! The upcoming fix for transmitted resolution pass through will be helpful but because of, as noted elsewhere in this thread, the absolutely horrible PQ on analog SD and the marginal PQ on digital SD I'll probably continue to keep the old receiver (which I kept when I had the MOXI installed last month) hooked up to the Sony (KV-27HS420) to view those channels through one of the composite inputs. A PITA, fer sure, but there's just no other choice given how crappy everything but HD looks from the MOXI.
Speaking of MOXI and HD. I think this was touched on earlier in this thread but I, too, had a heck of a time getting all the HD channels to work. When they flipped the switch I began receiving some (HDNET, FOX, HBO) HD but not the others. The techs they sent kept coming out, calling the office, confirming the codes had been entered properly and leaving scratching thier heads. Finally, one of them said he'd have a new MOXI box provisioned at the shop and would then bring it out. Bingo. Just FYI.
Finally, I'd like to second the comment somebody made about how the MOXI folks "get it" concerning customer relations and support. Thanks, MOXIGUY. Your posts and patience are mucho appreciated.

I was wondering if you are using your ReplayTV with Moxi or you are using alone.
If you are using together let me know how you setup them.
I am new with ReplayTV, but I like the feautures like programming throug a MyReplayTV website and download the programs to record on my PC, such things that Moxi is not offering yet.

I welcome your suggestions, criticisms, and comments!
Have fun!
The installer left the original digital cable box, so I left the ReplayTV hooked up to it and connected it to "Input 1" on my TV and I hooked up Moxi on "Input 2". This way I can flip between them easily. They are not connected to each other. Oh, and it's a ReplayTV model 2020, because I could NOT get my model 5040 to reliably change the channels on my Digital cable box.
I do like MyReplayTV.com and would like to see Moxi implement some sort of web-based recording control. Not high on my priorities, but it would certainly be a cool feature if implemented well.
Also, it looks like Moxi incorporates some sort of DRM, so downloading and burning shows to DVD is not something I see will be implemented any time soon. As far as I know, there is no capability for ReplayTV to control the Moxi box, so automated recordings would be difficult. (And you would have to deal with the fact that the ReplayTV box doesn't know when Moxi is going to record.) However, you could setup the ReplayTV box to record the Moxi's output so....

I know I could get around it by just recording what's on HDNet Movies at that time, but I'd just as soon try to find another way, if I could.

Great job on the comparison between ReplayTV and Moxi. I appreciate the thoroughness and care.
A note on the channel sort order (since you mentioned it iearlier on this thread): we made the choice so that pressing the up arrow would get you the next higher number--the action is parallel to using the ch up button on full screen TV. Up makes the numbers go up. Down makes the numbers go down. (Naturally we debated and tested, and there's a good case for either sorting choice... but we opted for making the up arrow have the same effect as channel up.
I'll post some additional comments on the other thread. (probably won't get to it until the weekend.)

Also an issue for me. My zip is 29625 (Anderson, SC). I informed Charter of the guide data being reversed 2 weeks ago by e-mail and 1 week ago by phone call.
Thanks.
This may seem like a very silly question, but if I were to subscribe to HDTV (through Charter) could I simply view it at 480i resolution through either S-video or composite output connection on my SD (non-HD) TV? I know that I would be missing all the HDTV "benefits" such as resolution, etc. but as I believe that there is actually some show content that is not available anywhere else.
Further, IF this is doable, when Moxi records the HD, can I assume that it will still record the "full" HD recording? And further, if I were to later plug in a HDTV and play back the content, would it then play back at full HD resolution and clarity?

I only had it on 480i briefly, but I want to say from memory that the HD channels were vertically elongated at that setting. I could be wrong about that.

I would think that would be a safe assumption -- presumably it's only downsampled during output, not as the signal is coming in.

Email only feedback itvsupportcenter@digeo.com
Adelphia have 2 PDFs guides about how use Moxi and Tech Support 877-387-2329 (DVR-2DAY) you can visit www.adelphiasocal.com/dvr/viewersguide (http://www.adelphiasocal.com/dvr/viewersguide) to get them.
Maybe Charter or other cable providers have similar resources.
Jeff, the cable installer left your Moxi Manual? Additionaly, in the digeo website there is the GLP Source Code of Moxi interface, I guess that some Linux user can review to see what is inside.
Yesterday I upgraded my ReplayTV hard drive to 160GB with the ReplayTVPatch, very easy.
The Moxi less than 40 hours recording capacity is driving me crazy, so I will use the Replay TV to record the series and movies, and left the Moxi only to HD programing and sports.

Moxi will record at HD resolution and downsample to 480i. There's a Widescreen control under Settings that will offer you options on how to format 16:9 material for a 4:3 screen: you can crop the edges, letterbox it, or stretch the image vertically so you get a full-screen "El Greco" view. The recording can be saved to play back at HD resolution when you get an HD display.
abcward 10-21-04, 04:52 PM MoxiGuy,
I wanted to repeat my question to you-
Some St.Louis Charter subs are reporting that they have VOD added to their moxi menu now. I currently do not have this available via my VOD.
Is there any way to get this added to my Moxi? Some sort of trigger?
Thanks
Bruce
Bruce:
I think that not depend of the Moxi box that you get VOD like the other users. I had a problem getting only 2 HDTV channels, Adelphia said that I need have provisioned again the box to HDTV, I think that my provider did not input the appropiate cods to my Moxi.
So, you don't need a trigger you need a bullet.

GlendaleHDTV 10-21-04, 06:55 PM Bruce,
I just today had the "games" and "ticker" menu choices show up. I would have thought VOD would have been there too, but unfortunately, its not.

And this is what is frustrating me. Some Moxi users in St. Louis have VOD, some have Games and Ticker. I have none of these. MoxiGuy, why is it that some subs have some stuff and some dont, all in the same cable area?
Thanks as always for your insight MoxiGuy - it is greatly appreciated!
MoxiGuy 10-21-04, 08:18 PM I appreciate that everyone wants the latest and greatest instantly. Typical pattern, though, is to push a new build or open up a new feature to a limited group of subscribers and take a short time to be sure everything is stable and working as expected. Then the deployments go wider. Couple days patience in the STL area and I think you'll all be on the same build with the same features enabled.
As "Dyaus" mentioned earlier in this thread, there is an "Easter Egg" that displays various food items that you can "throw" at the screen. Well, after some playing around (Ok, I was bored), I found another "Classic" Easter Egg.... Press the Moxi button and scroll to the "Settings" card.
Next, scroll to the "Terms/Conditions" card.
Now, press back, next, back, next, back, nextThe screen clears and an animation plays displaying developer credits!
Pressing the Moxi menu again exits...
Have fun!

But according to the almight Marty (who is the main DVR guy in St.Louis), nobody has it and it won't be ready for probably 60 days.

abcward 10-22-04, 10:41 AM STL UPDATE-
I do now have the Ticker and Games this morning. Hopefully VOD shows up soon.
Rampage522 10-22-04, 11:02 AM I have had the Moxi for going on 2 weeks now. Great device! 2 minor issues I'd like checked into, though.
I'm in the 35216 ZIP code area, and channels 14 and 24 were recently swapped in the program listing (about 2 months ago). Moxi's channel guide does not reflect this change.
Also, sometimes when scrolling up through the list of channels on the "Channels" menu option, some of the channels don't display. The space is allocated for them, but there is a blank area where they should be shown. If I use the arrow the move to the listing, I see the programming information for that channel. If I Page Up or Page Down then return to the given screen, often the "missing" channels are there. It seems to happen most frequently in the digital programming tier range of channels, and it's not every time. I hope all that gibberish makes sense. :)
Thanks in advance for any info on this! This is more of a "report" than a "I must have this fixed or I will implode." :) FWIW, we do not have the recent firmware upgrade that included the HDTV category on the Moxi menu. I understand from a local rep this is coming in a few weeks.
ABC,
I got my games and ticker yesterday. Can you go into the diagnostics on your box and find the status of your last software update? Mine has shown error ever since I got my box.
Thanks,
Tim
kelliot 10-23-04, 12:39 AM I have no games, no ticker, no VOD. Is it the firmware or the provider? How do I know or find out?
One great thing about my ReplayTV is that I can always find the firmware version number and I can always force a connection for an uodate. if I want it.
The Moxi just keeps me guessing. Is there an FAQ somewhere for advanced users??
Adelphia WLA installed the MOXI for me this morning and I was very disappointed with no DVI O/P and the streched SD. I waited for a few months for the Toshiba 62HMX84 which has two HDMI Inputs. But I couldn't use it with the MOXI STB. I spent a hour talking to the supervisor at Aldephia's office but not getting any answer.
I felt much better after reading this forum because quite a few people have already identified a lot of problems. It is great to have MOXIguy to address user issues and his present has kept me not switching to DirecTV (I have been using SD TIVO).
The component HD input is great and I haven't experienced any recording problem.
Other than the video source feed through and DVI output. I have some other suggestions:
1) To do List
2) Previous channel button
3) In the channel list menu, allow to key in channel number
4) Allow manual selection of favorite channels
TO top all list, I really want to try out the effect of DVI and verfify the myth of HDMI is better than component input.

... Is it the firmware or the provider? It's a combination. (BTW: a Moxi software update entails much more than firmware. see below)
Moxi software is upgraded in a series of releases that provide enhancements, new features, bug fixes, etc. Within each release there are a number of optional applications. Applications can be entitled individually, just like various premium channels (HBO, Starz, etc.). Some of them may be entitled with the basic DVR package, others as premium options. It's up to each cable provider to determine which of these applications to enable--and when.
So, where do things stand now? Charter and Adelphia are currently in the process of upgrading subscribers from version 2 of Moxi software to version 3. (Easy ways to tell them apart: Version 2 has no HDTV filter in the Moxi menu; the Flip Bar shows only the current program. Version 3 has the HD filter; the Flip Bar shows the current show plus the next three shows.) Pretty soon, all new subscribers will start out on version 3.
More than firmware: In older set top boxes, there was no hard drive, so all software had to be downloaded directly into silicon components--this combination of HW and SW is known as firmware. The BMC9012 has a hard disk drive that not only stores recorded TV, but stores most of our software. In that way it's much more like a PC or Mac. Some cable DVRs have a model where firmware is provided by the HW manufacturer and other providers supply the application software. With Moxi, all of the software comes from Digeo, so we provide it as a unified offering. We don't announce firmware updates as separate from the rest of the software. Just think of it as a new software version.)

Others on the way.[list=1] Arrow right to Find & Record, then arrow up to Scheduled Recordings You'll find a list of all upcoming recordings. Or choose Canceled & Deleted and you'll find a log of programs that were requested but are no longer on the box or the schedule. You'll see a brief explanation why not.
Use the jump button on the remote

Any more news yet on additional storage? It's really the most frustrating aspect of the Moxi box as it makes setting recordings a real PIA as it keeps trying to delete stuff I want to save.
Question for MOXI....
Something strange has happened in the last few days. When I first got the box, when I watched a recorded program and hit the skip button on the remote, it jumped ahead 30 seconds. Now when I press it, it goes ahead 15 minutes. I would appreciate any help you can give.

Rampage522 10-24-04, 05:30 PM Here's something else that keeps coming up. Occasionally I'll go to watch an HD channel on my SD TV, and the Moxi has "forgotten" the display option. I have set this to Letterbox multiple times, but sometimes it reverts to Widescreen. I have not lost power to the box between setting the option and it going back to the default.
MoxiGuy 10-24-04, 05:42 PM Rampage522:
This is addressed in the upgrade that's currently being deployed. If you have the HDTV filter in the menu, and your box still forgets the setting, please IM me.

You're not alone. If this were 1999, 80 gigs might be acceptable. But not today. So, this weekend I used my mini vicegrips to remove the tamper-proof screws from my Moxi. I am going to try a bit-level copy from the current drive to a new 300 gig drive. I'll keep the forum posted on my effort to drag the Moxi into the year 2004.
QL
( If it all works out, I'll put the 80 gig in the the same closet where I keep my old 14" in CRTs, my 340 MB tape backup system, and a flip-top box of CP/M formatted 8" Verbatim floppies. )
abcward 10-25-04, 12:12 PM can anyone point me to where i can find the Moxi Remote Control documentation? I want to program the remote to control my audio setup.
Thanks!!
Bruce
You can find a BMC9012 User Guide here (http://broadband.motorola.com/noflash/customer_docs/user_guides/506820-001.pdf) on Motorola's site. Near the end, it lists TV and Audio Receiver codes.
I received a paper copy when they installed the box...
abcward 10-25-04, 01:45 PM thanks on the info - however the codes for Sony did not work for my Surround Sound Receiver. Not a huge deal since I already have a learning remote that i generally use. But I like the feel of the Moxi Remote, so I wanted to use that as well.

If ypu have chance of take some pictures of your steps will be great, I curious to see that is inside the box.
Also remeber that Moxi operating system is Linux or some flavor of them, so you will need an image copier that deal with that partitiion.
I did the update with my ReplayTV and was amazing the easy was, maybe one can do the same on Moxi.

Good luck! I can't wait to hear how this works out. I really am still just confused as to why they put a measly 80gig drive in there in the first place. 300 gigs would certainly fit the bill for me. I've got a strange feeling it will probably make the system's preformance even improve a little with the extra overhead.

I've got the same issue. Kind of a pain. Is this related to the software upgrade that added the ticker and games?
According to MOXI, the operator has the ability to set it up how they want it.
According to Charter, they have changed it. The rep I spoke to yesterday said he didn't know why but was going to find out. What are the chances I get a call back today?
Question for MOXIguy
I watched BADBOY 2 on HBOHD, there were lot of pixelation/noise in fast action (such as explosion). Same problem happened in both recorded or life mode. When I watched the same film on SD HBO channel, the problem went away. I then tried 480i to 1080i on HD channel, with HD monitor and CRT. The same problem existed. I concluded it is a DVR problem (or HBO soruce). Is it an known issue?
KC38
Hmmm...
I downloaded the latest "Moxi User Guide Update v1.0" .PDF file from Charter (Anderson,SC) I found it at charter.com by clicking on "Digital Cable Help" link and selecting "Digital Video Recorder User and Setup Guides." (here is the direct link: http://charter.com/pdf/DVR_MoxiUpdatev1.pdf)
The file is titled "Supplement to Charter DVR User Guide * Version: 1.0 * October 2004" and among other things, it states:
Remote:
...
• Skip button jumps ahead 15 minutes in buffered or recorded contentAt first, I thought this was a misprint, but if you say this is something implemented, this is very disturbing. Sounds like one of two things might be happening:
1. This is a bug in the software that needs to be corrected.
2. An "executive" decision was made by Digeo (possibly forced by the "industry") to eliminate the 30 second skip (ReplayTV faced litigation for this.)
MoxiGuy:
Can you please clarify this? Should this be 15 minutes or 15 seconds? If it is supposed to be 15 minuets, can you please relay to Digeo my request to either reverted it back to a 30 second skip or to add an entry in Settings so that we, the viewers can choose the functionality? I understand the possible reasons for being able to jump 15 minutes ahead, but there are much better ways to do this other than commandeering the 30-second Skip button. For example, ReplayTV lets you key in a number then press "Jump" and you jump that many minutes into the show. Keying a number and pressing "Replay" or "Skip" jumps you backward or forward that number of minutes. Seems like a much better way of handling this...
If the "industry" is dictating this, then I am very disappointed because one of the strengths of DVR's is giving the viewer choice and flexibility. If the standard commercial model isn't generating the desired revenue, then maybe it's time to develop e better model. Issues like this really make me want to revert back to my ReplayTV boxes...
Also, the document states:
• Guide button functions as a shortcut to the On Next and Information menusMoxiGuy:
What is this "Guide" button? Is this the "Moxi" button? I don't see a "Guide" button on my remote.
The document also states:
Charter OnDemand™*
• OnDemand programming appears in the OnDemand category of the Moxi menu, or in other categories such as Movies
• Pause, rewind, stop and fast-forward right from your remote
• Charter OnDemand™ programs start whenever you want them to and the rental period is 24-hours
• Premiums on demand are free with a subscription to HBO®, Showtime®, Starz!®, Cinemax® or the Movie Tier
• Charter OnDemand can not be recorded by your DVR. Due to increased Copy Protection methods imposed by the Motion Picture Association of America and evolving governmental regulations not all high-value content may by recorded. This may include OnDemand services and Pay-Per-View content.MoxiGuy:
There is no OnDemand category on my selections. I assume it simply hasn't been enabled yet? But then why is it in the documentation...?
Oh, and MoxiGuy, thanks for your continued and excellent help!!!
bwilcox 10-26-04, 10:41 AM jbarr - I read the same "DVR Update" blurb you did and wondered about the VOD in the Rosemount (Rochester) area here in MN. Evidently it's another provider thing - some areas get turned on faster than others.

Seriously, though, I'm just grateful that Moxi is available in little ol' Anderson, SC. My brother-in-law visited over the weekend and is really bummed that Comcast in the Chicago suburbs doesn't have any DVR offerings at all. He has a new Sharp AQUOS 30" LCD HDTV, and he would be a prime candidate for Moxi. ReplayTV works well on it, but being able to record and view HD content would be so cool.
Specific to VOD, given current Moxi functionality, VOD is really the only feature "missing" that would compelete things for us (Ok, and maybe "Ticker") but as you said, "patience..."

HW gets frozen in atoms and molecules, modeling and ink. SW is more fluid. Remote has long lead times to manufacture. We had some U-I changes regarding the use of that button after manufacture of the first batch of remotes. Labeling pictured in documentation reflects second batch of remotes.

I am assuming that you are in Southern California and have Adelphia. I saw the same thing on HBO yesterday and today. This problem is a loss of bandwidth and not signal. It seems that Adelphia is lowering the bandwidth for HBO. I don't see why though, they barely have any channels as it is. They just turned on VOD in Redondo Beach (not on the MOXI), so maybe that is where the extra bandwidth is needed. Another BIG disappointment from Adelphia.

I think the only reason Adelphia is offering any HD is to be able to say that they offer it in an attempt to keep current customers who are looking for HD. I wouldn't really plan on much from Adelphia in HD until the FCC steps in a mandates cable carriers to carry all local HD channels just like they are required to carry analog channels.
I've attempted to contact both local (SoCal) and corporate offices regarding Adelphia's HD plans and both offices refuse to discuss future HD plans. They also refuse to discuss any plans for migrating additional analog channels to digital. And that makes no sense. You would think they would want to migrate as many channels as possible to digital. Better picture quality for the customer and less bandwidth requirements for them.

MoxiGuy 10-27-04, 10:12 AM Charter has, indeed, ordered 70,000 units. Bear in mind, however, they are built to order and delivered over a period of time. The Moxi PowerKEY units are in trial now and we plan to begin commercial deployment with Charter later this year.

It would be helpful for Southern California Adelphia subscribers experiencing blocking problems on HBO HD to report it. Unless engineers receive feedback from those of us disappointed with the deterioration of the subscription service it might not get fixed.
I asked the customer service rep @ the 800 # to file a complaint report. I then asked for the phone # of someone in mgt whom I could followup with. I was given a contact in "communications" located in Colorado. I spoke with that person today who said she would pass the information along here in Los Angeles and took my #.

Hit {back} {next} {back} {next} {back} {next} and it should pop up. Clear at the bottom of the remote clears the screen of your food items, but leaves an item of food to be thrown.
I have to say that my 5 and 8 y/o boys love this feature. I have to take the remote from them as I fear that they will break it.

I think that you are going to have to wait to see shat happens between Time Warner and Comcast before we see any major movement with the HD channels. [news] (http://money.iwon.com/jsp/nw/nwdt_ge.jsp?news_id=dji-00063520041025&feed=dji&date=20041025)

daftpunkxl 10-27-04, 08:35 PM Yeah, I'm in West LA and I think Adelphia's HD offerings are just fine. Not perfect, mind you, but all local networks (minus WB and UPN, but who really cares), and ESPN are all I really need. I'd love HDNet, though, and the option to get NBA League Pass in HD.
Not sure if this has been reported before, (this is, after all, a HUGE thread) but I had an interesting issue last night...
I'm subscribed to Charter in Anderson, SC. The Moxi box had been tuned to the FOX News channel (66) all day. Before I got home from work, "The Simpsons" was scheduled to record at 5:00 PM. on channel 12, and "That 70's Show" was scheduled to record at 6:00 PM on channel 12. I arrived home at about 5:45, "between" recordings. When we turned on the TV, it was tuned to FOX News, channel 66. At 6:00 PM, "That 70's Show" began recording in the background, and FOX news continued to play "live". So far, so good. Everything is as expected.
At about 6:10 PM, we hit the Moxi button, brought up the "Recorded TV" category, and began playing the currently recording "That 70's Show" from the beginning. After skipping some commerc...I mean unwanted content, we eventually "caught up to live" but instead of staying on channel 12, displaying the "That 70's Show" live, Moxi displayed FOX News live. Pressing "Replay" or "Rewind" would revert back into the currently recording "That 70's Show" program, and pressing "Skip" or "Fast Forward" would move through "That 70's Show" up to the point where it was "live", and then it would display FOX News live. "The Simpsons" and "That 70's Show" did record in their entirety, but this seemed like strange behavior. I would have expected Moxi to "stay" on the channel recording "That 70's Show" while watching it even after reaching "live".
Has anyone else encountered anything like this?
Moxi passes "The Wife Test" with flying colors!
Since having our Moxi box installed, it turns out that *I* have been the one who has been consistently "controlling" the remote. Effectivly, my wife has not been "using" the Moxi box, just watching me use it. But, for the past two days, she has had the opportunity to come home from work early, so she finally picked up the Moxi remote and played around with Moxi without my typical tech-oriented pestering. The verdict? "I like this!" she said. She "discovered" the "Movies" Category, and loves that. She likes the "status bar" on the bottom as you are pausing, fast-forwarding, and rewinding. She likes the fact that the "Dual-axis Navigation Interface" is basically just "circular" rings through which you can go round and around. (In other words, there's no need to remember "where you are" you just keep scrolling and you will eventually get to where you want to be.) And the dual tuners has eliminated recording conflicts.
Anyway, I just thought you would like to know that in our house, Moxi passes "The Wife Test"!
wilkemp 10-29-04, 10:30 AM My wife is also finally coming around, she definitely likes the recording and playback features, however she is really not crazy about the remote, she is not all that crazy about tech stuff so I does take her a little while to get use to things.
GlendaleHDTV 10-29-04, 10:41 AM I had a similar wife approval experience. She calls me at work and I hear arguing in the background:
ME: "What's that?"
WIFE: "Oh, the kids are arguing about what to watch on TV"
ME: "I recorded some kid's shows if you want to start that up"
WIFE: "OK, you're going to have to walk me through how to do it"
ME: "Hit the MOXI button"
WIFE: "OK.. Recorded TV.. Wow, this is really easy. Even I can figure this out.
WIFE (to kids): "How about Cat and the Hat?"
KIDS: "YEA!!!!!!!"
Moxi saves the day..
It's funny how different people have different perspectives. Coming from the ReplayTV world, the Moxi remote is very nice. With a couple minor exceptions, (and they really are probably "Moxi Box programming" issues, not remote issues) I REALLY like Moxi's remote. Especially, the cool "rubbery" covering on the back.
holdshort 10-30-04, 01:16 PM For people in the Fort Worth area with charter, I talked to CSR Friday and was told the moxi box will be available in Dec. I don't know if its true, but it is a date to dream for.
bruce73 10-30-04, 05:00 PM Just got Moxi installed today and have a couple of questions, which I haven't seen addressed, but this is a long thread, so apologies upfront if they have been:
Setup:
Samsung HLP-5063W
Yamaha HTR-5450 receiver
Adelphia Cable (LA)
1) With the component connection, I am unable to get 720p input, so I've opted for 1080i. The same happened with the Motorola 6200 I had, but I was able to switch to DVI which did give me 720p, which I prefer. Is this a limitation of Moxi, Adelphia, the nature of component connection or some combination? Would it be reasonable to assume that once Moxi enables its DVI port, 720p will be available?
2) In trying to configure the remote to work the Yamaha, the only code I've found to work will control mute/volume, but not on/off. Don't know if there is any kind of workaround for this or if I'm just SOL on this one.
Thanks, guys.

1) Don't know why you're not getting 720p. I'll ask around. The fact that the BMC9012 and the DCT6200 both have this issue makes me wonder if there's something in the Samsung set up.
2) If you program the Moxi remote to control your audio receiver, you only get volume and mute controls, not power on and off. We're working on changing that. It will, however, require a new remote, not simply a software update. I don't know when the new remotes will be available.
BTW, in the next major software update, we'll have native-mode passthrough, which means that the output resolution will automatically switch to match the input. That way we'll by-pass any scaling in the BMC9012, and let your TV handle it according to your preferences.

This is great news MoxiGuy! Do you know around when this next update will be ready to go?
Also, since I gotta ask, what's the word on more storage??

I've got a Samsung as well as it will not handle 720p. It upconverts to the 1080i.

The 720p output is available (unless your display doesn't allow it.) If you tell the Moxi Box to convert everything to 720p, it will, even the SD broadcasts. Soon the box will have the capability of passing through all of the broadcasts at the same level as it icomes in.

Can't help you with this one, sorry.
bruce73 10-30-04, 07:15 PM MoxiGuy:
RE: 720p -- if it is something with Samsung's setup, it must be hardwired with the inputs, because I can't see any way to enable it via component. Something to do with component being analog, maybe? Any time frame on availability of DVI output, or is that something Adelphia controls?
And thanks for confirming the deal with the remote, at least I won't obsess about that.

I'm assuming your not getting 720p on your Samsung is via component as well? Did it work with DVI?

I know that the way it's supposed to work, but it just doesn't. The TV will keep trying to synch up, but never makes it (the exact same thing happened with the DCT-6200 over component). And since the Samsung's native resolution is 720p, it shouldn't have any problem with that, but it does.
Hopefully when the pass-through feature becomes a reality, this will beome a moot point. :)
GlendaleHDTV 10-30-04, 11:42 PM I've got a Samsung 46 inch DLP (HLN model) hooked up via component and I've had no problem with the 720p on Moxi. It works perfectly. Maybe its something with the newer Samsungs (the HLP models)?
beaker77 10-31-04, 04:56 AM I just accidentally found an Easter Egg (literally) on my Motorola BMC9012 from Charter.
On your remote press "Next”/"Back" fast and repeatedly. You should see a pie that you can throw at the screen. You can now cycle through with the "Next" and "Back" buttons for other items to through at the screen (Tomato, Strawberry, Egg, etc) you can aim the item with the arrow keys and throw with the ok button.
Dizzman 11-01-04, 01:15 PM I have a few points after much watching and using of my system.
First of all, the remote...
Buttons need to be a little bigger for the smaller ones. (next, info, etc) my wife is driven nuts by the fact that she cannot read them.
Interface.
It needs an "esc" key. i know that if i am in MOXI and want to go back to TV, then i hit live TV. Unfortunately, if i am watching prerecorded stuff, and i follow and hit the same thing... then i lose my movie and have to go through a few steps to get it back. As far as i see it, an escape key would be used more than a key to bring me to live TV.
Channel lists.
We really need to have the ability to program these ourselves. I got rid of all the stuff i do not have and rarely watch... including the PPV stuff. However the other night i wanted to see what was on the PPV listings... i then had to key in every one of the 30 channels. This pissed my wife off and ended up up taking quite a while. As well, if i ever want to listen to the audio channels, then i am in for alot of keying just to find the ones i want.
Dish has (to my liking) this one down the best. YOu setup lists (up to 4 i think) and you call them what you like. If moxi just had the ability to add in the menu 3 more channel lists that i could set what shows up in them... then we are talking. let the movies list have the PPV channels, let the audio have all the various MTV, VH1 and coulntry stuff as well as the audio only channels. All of this INDEPENDANT from the main channel list. Then we are talking.
Recorded programs.
I need a status bar of some sort telling me how much stuff is recorded. As well a %age indication on each show showing how much it takes up. And i want to add a big vote for more storage. I barely use this and only record one program in HD (desperate housewives) and that one gets deleted once we watch it. And i am always running out of space. i cannot imagine if i started trying to record lots of stuff... or even if i wanted to record lots of HD...
Thanks for listening moxiguy.

What's happened to me is I have to keep changing recording options and reordering program priorities every time I want to set a new HD show to record. I have about 6 or 7 hours of HD shows that I like to record every week and I usually end up deleting them right after I watch them. It gets to be a real pain if I am away for a couple of days as I am afraid the Moxi will delete something before I watch it or something I have set to save - I currently have about 3.5 hours of an HD Nova special that I have not gotten completely through. I dread what will happen when something like "24" comes back on and I'll want to save a few episodes to go back to.
I know I must sound like a broken record on this issue but it has not been addressed.
Dizzman - I like your idea of a user configurable channel list and escape key - I keep trying to figure out what gets my screen back from any one of the menus.

The Moxi button is designed so that if you just keep pressing it, you'll get back to whatever you were watching. It won't switch you to live TV. If you are in the menu, but not on Channels, the first press of Moxi will bring you back to Channels. The next press will take whatever is in the corner window and bring it up full-screen.
Zoom has the effect of zooming a fullscreen picture back into the corner and revealing the menu. Or, if you are in the menu, it will zoom the corner image up to full screen. It zooms the image up from the corner and then back down.
Neither of these will switch you to live TV. As for your other suggestions, thanks for the list. We're planning some version of most of the them all for future releases. Your explanations of why they are important to you will help guide our designers.
belsokar 11-01-04, 02:43 PM I am in So. Cal adelphia, and have a moxi hooked up to a hdtv, using 1080i output...I complained before that I my moxi box seems to sometimes have a hardtime handling non-hd material on high def stations...
For example, when watching ABCHD, I always get alot of picture jitter and flickering when watching shows that are not HD material...I've also seen this on HBOHD on shows like Bill Maher which is not a high def show. I'm not sure what causes the problem, but if I switch my output to 480p output, then the picture is completely fine. Also, if its an HD picture, then there are no problems whatsoever either. I also see this problem when watching an HD show only when it goes to commercial...everything starts jumping, and it can get quite maddening,...I have to turn my head during these moments so my eyes don't go crazy...I'm not sure if anyone has seen anything like this, and if I need to just have adelphia replace my box...
anyone else see this behavior?
Dizzman 11-01-04, 02:52 PM To add to my last, since MOXI is essentially a PC, i want to configure these different channel lists (or even jsut all the different options) through either a web page that is accessed via the ethernet connection through my home network, or even better, through my providers website (i can login after all) and then it just updates me.
I have found the adding an removing channels to be PAINFULLY slow (and i am very patient)
Thanks
I have been following the forum for a couple a weeks now and finally this past Saturday I got the pleasure of getting one from Charter. I thought I would share my thoughts on it, and pass on my suggestions that have already been mentioned for the most part.
The interface is great, its easy to use, and hella fast. It is so worth every penny to just get rid of the slower box charter had me using before this one. The key things I am noting and like I said have been mentioned before but I think its worth repeating so that Moxiguy can see more than a few people agree on the same issues.
1) More storage a must, I hope that I can take advantage of nice hard drive/rebate deals and plug any ol' USB2 drive into it to add more storeage. My budget won't allow much if I am forced to go through Motorola, or Charter for the additional storage.
2)more tuners, can't wait for 4, didn't take long to come up with programming conflicts, although I think a lot of those conflcts are caused by the Repeat flag not being set right on shows, or how more shows like to run a minute late or early.
3)going along the idea of the repeat flag problem I see on quite a lot of shows I would love the option to program it to say Record Cops, Every Saturday 7-730. That way I manually set what time to record the show at, but at the same time if the show being played happens to not be cops it would then ignore that time slot. Although if it can not be that advanced then just manually having a time slot selected would be a major plus since it would not be dificult for me to figure out the day time new shows come on and I would just have to figure out when the new season ends.
4)Some sort of Hard Drive status would be great so I know when I am on the verge of filling up. I have only had the device a couple days now, but have already recorded several shows, although right now I immediatly delete em' so I don't have to worry about space. Would be nice to see a numerical or graphical display of space available vs total space under a menu like the recorded tv.
Thats the main points I have right now. I must say I fell in love with it pretty quick and am glad I had the patience to wait for Charter to release a DVR than buying a Tivo or replay tv. Have way too many wires around the tv as it is, having an all in one device just makes since.

Glad you took the time to repeat some requests. One of the ways we know something is of high priority to the subscribers is if lots of folks ask for a feature. By my count, "more storage" and "plug-in USB drives" are far and away the most requested features.

I've read on the "General Samsung HLP Issues & Questions" thread that this is, in fact, an issue with the HLPs. They will not receive 720p via component, as the HLNs did. A fix was mentioned, but it involves a hardware change, something I'm not all that keen on at this point, especially with moxi enabling DVI hopefully soon.
Anyway, just wanted to get back with this info for those interested.
systemtech 11-03-04, 12:57 AM so i get my moxi box to beta test, after about 7-8 hours all of a sudden i get a blue screen and "we are sorry, there is a problem with your account status, please call customer support." anyone else seen this?
GlendaleHDTV 11-03-04, 09:04 AM There's an issue with the ticker that I think relates to wherever Moxi is getting it's data from. Specifically, my wife and I like to use the ticker to check the weather. The problem is, when I pull up the ticker in the evening, the "weather" category gives you "current", "today", and "tonight", while the "forecast" category gives you the forecast for the day after tomorrow and two days past that. So when I pulled up the forecast on Tuesday evening, it gave me the forecast for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I can't see anywhere where it tells me what the weather will be tomorrow!
Again, I'm assuming this is some issue with the data source, but this can't be what's intended.

My zip is 63122. Please note that I typically only check the weather at night, so I can't say what the forecast would look like if I brought it up now (I'm at work so I can't check). Not sure if it would be different based on the time of day.
abcward 11-03-04, 10:04 AM Moxiguy,
Is there any plans to have a method to check how many hours have been recorded, or better yet how many hours of space are available before the HD fills up? This seems like something everyone would benefit from.
Any further word on VOD coming to Moxi? That is the highest on my wish list.
Also, suggestion: When pulling up the Moxi menu listing of Movies, Kids, or Sports, it would be nice to get the 'whats on next' like you do with the normal Channel List. I find that my family is checking for a kids show at 2 minutes before the hour, but the "kids menu" will only show the current show, which obviously is ending in 2 minutes.
Thanks for all the help Moxi guy - keep up the fantastic work
motoman 11-03-04, 10:07 AM Still no ticker here in 93030. We had it for a few days then away it went and hasn't returned.

Hard Drive space meter is one of the most-frequently requested enhancements. It's high on our list, but will not be in the next two updates. (The feature set for those are locked in except for the testing and the tweaking.) I'll let you know when we have an ETA on a space meter.
VOD is live in a few areas now. It's being rolled out throughout all the markets. It's high on our priority lists (and our cable partners as well). I don't have a market-by-market schedule to announce.
"On Next" in all of the filters is planned for early next year. (Not the next update, but the one after that).

Very often, I am browsing the "Movies" Category, see a movie, realize that it will be ending soon, and want to know what's airing next. Currently, I have to move back to the Channels Category, find the movie, and then navigate to "On Next" just to see what's on next. It would be VERY nice if you could extend the "On Next" function throughout all categories.
bruce73 11-03-04, 11:24 AM Also, no ticker in 90027 (Adelphia).

Just got my new Moxi box today BMC9012 (Charter)....my first impressions are not good. Keep in mind, I have only been watching it for 30minutes....and my old HDTV box was Moto5100 over DVI to my Sony HS-20 projector.
Moxi setup: 720p and wide-screen over Component cables to HS-20.
First, image quality of all channels has gone down (no surprise), but I didn't expect HD channels to also drop dramatically. All HDTV channels are softer and the colors look weaker....the rest of the digital channels are fuzzy....and the analog channels are almost unwatchable. I'm going to record some HDTV shows and see how they look, but if I had to choose right now....I would ask for the Moto5100_DVI back.
I assume there is nothing I can do to improve the picture, other than project a smaller image.
Any ideas...comments?
Thanks,
Phil
motoman 11-03-04, 05:32 PM Phil,
In my system I kept my Motorola 6200 box and use it for SD and some HD via the DVI output. I use the Moxi to record all my HD stuff.
Doing a A & B comparison I could not see a difference between the two on HD material.
YMMV

Adam Tyner 11-03-04, 10:24 PM Has anyone seen their Moxi just...stop updating? My last program guide update was on October 28th. Manually triggering an EPG update doesn't seem to work anymore. (It acts like it's trying to fetch the update -- I'm not getting an error message or anything -- but nothing seems to come.) Of those "Last ______ Update" fields, the most recently updated is the log update, also updated on 10/28, a few hours after the EPG update. As far as I can tell, the program data currently downloaded seems to stop at 11/8. I've tried rebooting and then triggering the program update...power cycling and then triggering the update...but it seems to be stuck. Any suggestions for other things I can try?

I am in Mauldin, SC and had the same issue tonight while recording "LOST" on ABC from 8:00 to 9:00 , and started watching 20 min. into it. same thing happened again while recording "West Wing" on NBC form 9:00 to 10:00. One additional symptom I noticed, was that several times if I was skipping ahead and pressed skip again after catching up to Live TV (pressed the button one too many times) it would jump back about 5 min. Very strange behavior indeed. I only noticed this after getting an update a couple days ago.

Diego is working on a software update that will allow the Moxi box to pass through SD channels at their native resolution; this should fix the fuzzy issue some (I think). As the the decreased qality on the HD channels, I cannot help you. I use 1080i and don't notice any decrease in HD video quality compared to my old box.
2thumbsup 11-04-04, 06:34 AM Yes I know how you feel I’ve had my widescreen about two weeks now and when it was delivered I coulden’t have been much happier, I did not have a digital box just a straight feed from the wall to TV I have charter. My picture was outstanding on SD, so I decided while waiting for my moxi to come, I got the digital box to see how the others would look such as HBO Show etc, same quality as a straight feed outstanding picture I had nothing to complain about. So along comes moxi tech installs yesterday, same as you HD great picture but everything else crappy picture. While thinking what I can do to live with this or return the box and go back to the digital box I realized the tech ran component from the moxi to the TV and also a straight feed with the cable to the TV since he noticed it had PIP, so after thinking about it hear is what I do to get my outstanding picture back with SD, buy the way I have a panny 47x54, when watching a HD channel I select on my TV componet1, when I want to watch SD, I select on my TV TV which is the straight feed from cable. Only problem when watching SD I loose my moxi remote which I can not look at menus to see what’s on, happy with picture quality but not happy with using two remotes which means a lot of switching when I want to see the menus. Hope this helps you.
johnmark 11-04-04, 08:14 AM For peopel who have terrible SD picture quality. Are you using 480i or 480p. On my Moxi 480p is terrible for SD while 480i is just as good the Moto 6200. YMMV

Ok, I had to manually set the Moxi to 480i to make the SD picture quality at least watchable....but now as you all know....I have to manually switch it back to watch HDTV channels....arggg....hope this fix is coming soon.
The overall quality is still no-way as good as my old Moto5100_DVI quality, I believe that it is because of the DVI port and my Sony HS-20 projector. In the past, all my connections to this projector has been through the DVI port (computer/DVD/Moto5100), the only time I used the component port was for XBOX...and it always looked great. So, I believe the HDTV quality will not get any better until MOXI get the DVI port enabled. (would be a nice Christmas present...hint...hint...Moxi)
Keep in mind, that my screen size is 106", so any flaw or changes in the image quality is very noticeable. And before the Moxi, all my images looked really good...including SD channels (well good enough).....the DVD looked great / the HDTV Moto5100 looked great / XBox looked great / Computer looked great....I guess I got used to it...and now I have to lower my standards. Oh well.
Still the ability to record shows is a really nice feature....and I have already used it to my advantage...recorded "MythBusters" and time shifted to just the parts I liked....very cool!
Now all I ask is for cable companies and satellite companies to stop overly compressing HDTV channels, it has gotten to the point that my DVD player and XBox are better looking than the HDTV channels. I know wishful thinking....but we all must have dreams.

These are the same dates that my Moxi shows. Keep in mind that Oct 28th was just last week. There are not updates every day, only when warranted. It sounds to me that your system is working just as it should be.

I only ask because the programming data seems stale -- for example, it says virtually everything showing on HDNet from now till some point on November 8th is "This Month On HDNet" or something like that. Also, I've been having a problem with two channels being transposed on my program guide. Someone else in my area reported yesterday that this problem has been fixed, but since I can't get a more recent guide (which he apparently can?), I'm still seeing those two channels listed incorrectly.
Edit -- someone in the local HD thread in my area mentioned having problems getting program data when he was using a splitter. I'm not using a splitter, but I wonder if it could be a connection problem causing this. I disconnected/reconnected everything on the 29th, and even though all my channels seem to be coming in fine, maybe just making sure everything's nice and tight could fix whatever problems I'm experiencing. I'll give that a shot when I get home...
MoxiGuy 11-04-04, 11:16 AM Program listings (EPG data) should update every day. If your guide data is getting stale, you may have a connectivity problem. Call your cable company customer support line. (In contrast to the guide data, which comes down daily, the software updates, as noted by abcward, are sent out on their own schedule when ready.)

I wonder if once we get native rate pass through in the next update the SD picture quality will improve since it will no longer need to be scaled.
MoxiGuy - Any input on this?
Thx.
MoxiGuy 11-04-04, 01:32 PM I don't want to make promises to people who have much finer home equipment and bigger screens than I have, but I like what I'm seeing at home on my Sony Wega XBR "glass bottle" CRT. The end result of changing the resolution to 480i automatically is going to be no different from changing it manually. It's just a lot easier. It will help with scaling artifacts. It won't eliminate MPEG artifacts from real-time encoding analog channels

New questions:
1.) If the Moxi unit can NOT be powered off, then in what state is everyone leaving the machine in?
2.) Does the Moxibox always record what channel is being displayed even when you have not touched the "pause" key? (If so, then the unit will continue to record even when I'm not watching....essentially writing to the hard drive 24x7.)
3.) Does the Moxibox display the image after encoding MPEG2 for writing to the harddrive? To put it another way, is what I'm seeing on the screen a de-encoded / re-encoded MPEG2 image. (I know that Charter is compressing the image before sending to the Moxibox, but for some reason the old Moto5100 images was much cleaner and much sharper)
4.) How is everyone seeing if there is a software update waiting to download? (I can't seem to find out where this is on the moxi screens)
5.) Is anyone (else) seeing lip-sync issues with the moxi box over TOSLINK cable?
Thanks again...
1.) If the Moxi unit can NOT be powered off, then in what state is everyone leaving the machine in?I typically leave the Moxi screen at "Live TV" and just shut off the TV.
2.) Does the Moxibox always record what channel is being displayed even when you have not touched the "pause" key? (If so, then the unit will continue to record even when I'm not watching....essentially writing to the hard drive 24x7.)My guess is yes, it is always recording and buffering. Originally, I thought Moxi only buffered 30 minutes in a "rolling" buffer, but it appears that it buffers longer if there is available disk space. My assumption (based on other DVR's) is that it is a continuous, rolling buffer.
3.) Does the Moxibox display the image after encoding MPEG2 for writing to the harddrive? To put it another way, is what I'm seeing on the screen a de-encoded / re-encoded MPEG2 image. (I know that Charter is compressing the image before sending to the Moxibox, but for some reason the old Moto5100 images was much cleaner and much sharper)Interesting question. On the ReplayTV, EVERYTHING you watch is data being read back from the hard drive, regardless of if it is a recorded show, a buffered show, or a live show. Of course, on ReplayTV boxes, the signal is an analog signal IN to the ReplayTV box, and must be converted to digital, written to disk, read from disk, and converted back to analog for output to the TV. My guess is that Moxi is writing the data stream as it receives it and you are always viewing data being read off of the hard disk. Just a guess only.
4.) How is everyone seeing if there is a software update waiting to download? (I can't seem to find out where this is on the moxi screens)You cannot see if there is an update waiting, only if one has been installed. Press the "Menu" and "OK" buttons at the same time ON THE BOX and a diagnostics menu will appear. One of the screens shows the currently installed software version.
5.) Is anyone (else) seeing lip-sync issues with the moxi box over TOSLINK cableI haven't noticed this, but I am only viewing SD channels, not HD channels.
Speaking of TOSLINK, I have a TOSLINK cable running from my Moxi to a Sony home theater system. The Moxi is set for "digital audio" in one of the setup screens (I forget which one) and there is a (never-before-displayed) "Digital" light now displaying on my Sony HT. OK, so fat so good. Sound comes through and plays through the Sony HT. But how do I know if I'm getting 5.1? Are there any channels that consistently broadcast 5.1 signals? I have been watching a number of movies, and when I listen to the back channels, all I hear is silence. (They DO work because DVD's rock all speakers.)
(One side note: I ALSO have RCA audio connections going from the Moxi to my TV for those times when I don't need/want the HT sound. It's very nice that BOTH are enabled.)

Thanks Jim, now I can see that I have 3.0.80LR-P.75011 Software version.
I did notice that the software update field reported an error "LAST SOFTWARE UPDATE: ERROR", is this normal?
I also found Harddisk space was ~70GB, and that I had used only 4GB so far...nice to see this at least in the service menu.

Jim,
The next update is in the final testing and validation process. When you get it depends on what turns up during those testing rounds. Best case Santa will bring it. Worst case, it's a Valentine. I don't have a definitive word on DVI.
MoxiGuy 11-04-04, 07:58 PM Is Moxi always recording? jbarr's guess is correct. Bonus benefit. If you turn on the TV in the middle of a show--and it's a show you want to see--you can rewind to the beginning, even if you hadn't planned to record it. The timing of the buffer depends on whether the program is HD or SD. We have a fixed amount of HDD space dedicated to the buffer. In HD you'll fill it much faster than SD. Can't give you exact times because programs come down the pipe with differnt amounts of compression.
On what you're seeing, jbarr has another correct guess. If the show is digital (whether HD or SD) we record it as we get it. It's decoded when you view it. The recorded signal is identical to the live signal. With analog shows, we have to encoded in real-time on the fly and then decode it. That's why analog channels will show more artifacts than digital channels. Encoding MPEG in real time with processors that are affordable in consumer-level devices will never be as clean as the encoding that's done at the network level or in mastering a DVD.
MoxiGuy 11-04-04, 08:53 PM jbarr and cbranson asked about a case where fast-forwarding to the end of a program while it is currently recording suddenly switches to another channel.
This is a known bug. What's happening is that you are swapping over to the other tuner.
It happens rarely. (I've never actually seen it). The quickest way out is just tap the pause button briefly and tap it again. This will take you off the other tuner and get you back to the show you were watching.
systemtech 11-04-04, 10:32 PM is there any chance that we could get a reminder function like the old moto boxes had, ( it was really a function of TVguide software on the DCT) that would remind you when a show you wanted to watch was coming on? also does VOD work in any of the charter systems with Moxi?

is there any chance that we could get a reminder function....We're looking into this for a future software release. ...does VOD work in any of the charter systems with Moxi?Yes. VOD on Moxi is now in the process of being rolled out. Some Charter systems have it now. Others are planned for the coming weeks. We're also very close to activating On Demand in Adelphia markets.
systemtech 11-05-04, 10:02 AM VOD is not working here in Kennewick =)
I am new to this thread but it seems there is a great deal of info being shared here. I need some advice. I just last night got my Moxi box and gave up my Adelphia furnished HD converter. I am extremely disappointed with the picture so far. All channels have lost their sharpness. Analog channels are barely watchable. The tech will be back in an hour or so because he couldn't wait around for the "hit" last night and he felt obligated to come back and make sure everything was okay. I am very tempted to ask him for my old receiver back.
I am using component cables thru my A/V receiver the same as I was before so I don't think changing the cabling around is gonna' solve anything.
What should I do?
Can this problem be fixed with software updates?
Thanks for any input.

Have you gone in to the settings menu and made sure it was set to 1080i? I dont think they shipped with that by default. Also make sure you go into the audio and change to Dolby.
Hope this helps,

Yes. I have tried all the different settings for non-HD and still get a crap picture. Audio is fine. Dolby Digital is working as it should. It's just a really fuzzy picture.

2thumbsup 11-05-04, 07:40 PM I know how you feel, this is the solution I have found that works for me but I really don't know how long I can handle it, but my SD looks great as it did before moxi came. One other draw back with this solution is only channels 2 thru 99 above 99 I have to switch back to moxi my work aroung is below

Only problem when watching SD I loose my moxi remote which I can not look at menus to see whats on, happy with picture quality but not happy with using two remotes which means a lot of switching when I want to see the menus. Hope this helps you.
Dan - You may have already done this but double check all of your coax connections. Until last night all of my analog stations were picking up some sort of noise that was making them unwatchable while everything 100-> was fine. I though it was my Nile remote extender but ended up jiggling the spltter and coax's into the Moxi. I tightened a few connections and the interference cleared right up.

bruce73 11-06-04, 09:06 AM MoxiGuy: A couple of requests for future upgrades:
1) When selecting channels manually by punching in the numbers, can the receive window be made a little larger for input? As it is, the nos. have to be entered fairly rapidly, and half of the time it switches before I can finish.
2) "On Next" is great. Can it be expanded so that, at least for movies, there is an "Other Times" choice that would allow recording of a future airing (without having to go to "Find and Record")? The moto 6200 had something like this (i.e. for listings) which was very convenient.
Thanks.
MoxiGuy 11-06-04, 09:37 AM Originally posted by bruce73 1) When selecting channels manually by punching in the numbers, can the receive window be made a little larger for input? We have been tweaking this to find the right balance between making you wait to long for the channel to change and giving you enbough time to enter the full channel number. What's your town and cable operator (so we can see which build you are on)?
2) "On Next" is great. Can it be expanded so that, at least for movies, there is an "Other Times" choice... This is planned for a future build. Works in all filters. Also lets you flip the entire guide forward in time so you can see all movies on tomorrow at 8:00 (for example) This won't be in the next major update, but it will be in the one after that.

Rumbler 11-06-04, 12:55 PM MoxiGuy,
I just got my Moxi Unit today. So far I can't believe the features and flexability with this Unit, very well done! I'm curious about the MoxiMate. Is this available yet and will it work with my current box (BMC9012)?
Thanks
MoxiGuy 11-06-04, 03:31 PM Rumbler,
Moxi Mate is planned for release early next year. When your cable company begins to offer it, they will also have to swap out your BMC9012 for a BMC9022. BTW, 9022 has double the hard drive capacity of 9012.
abcward 11-06-04, 04:13 PM Will we have to purchase the Moxi Mate when it is released? If so, any guess on the pricing?
Thanks
Bruce

Rumbler 11-06-04, 04:40 PM MoxiMate datasheet. It sounds like the consumer will be able to buy it for $79.
http://www.digeo.com/assets/datasheets/moxiMate.pdf
MoxiGuy 11-06-04, 05:04 PM The price listed on our data sheet for Moxi Mate is a price quoted to cable operators. What will you pay? Bear in mind that in order to install a Moxi Mate they also have to purchase the BMC9022 from Motorola. The 9022 will cost them more than the 9012*. It will be up to the cable operators to set consumer pricing for a two-room solution. My guess: you'll pay more for a two-room setup than a one-room setup but less than twice as much. That's just me guessing. Stay tuned.
*BMC9022 includes double the hard drive capacity of 9012, a built-in optical drive for DVD and CD, and additional components to run two simultaneous versions of the U-I, etc.

It's still possible, but it's not currently planned. If we do it, it won't be soon. What I said was we're tracking demand, and may consider it. Still tracking and considering.
I appreciate the thanks. Let me return it on behalf of the whole Moxi team. Your posts are extremely valuable to us.

Yesterday I had a few hours to fool with my entire HT system. When Adelphia came out to install the Moxi the tech said the signal must go directly into the Moxi box and removed all splitters. Well once I reconnected my cable input, ran it through my Monster power center, then 1 split to Moxi box, another to TV then another split to DVR (Lite-on LVW-5005 DVD recorder). All systems are "Go"! I am thrilled. The digital channels as well as all HD channels appear to be as good as they were with the previous box. I will admit the signal on the analog channels is definitely not as good but that is why I have a split to tv. It is easy enough to use the tv tuner for these if I can't stand the look thru the Moxi. I am able to use my A/V reciever in conjunction with the Lite-on to view (and record if so desired) VHS. Now if only there were a way to record to DVR from Moxi life would be complete.:D
motoman 11-07-04, 02:58 PM Have any cable company's ordered the new Moxi Unit (BMC9022) yet? I'm on Adelphia here and would love more space. I went to record a movie last night on HBO-HD and had to dump some stuff so I could record it. I need more space or a way to dump it off to my D-VHS machine via firewire.
Later,
Jim

There's some light to the end of tunnel, but I am reading between lines, your cable provider will offering the MoxiMate rent instead have another Moxi box, but you will have pay the same value or more than first Moxi box, but you provider will have a cheap box than Moxi original box.
Motorola expands the double capacity to use the the same box with Remote extension, but what if I want the BC9022 only if will available I don't think so.
I will prefer have two BC9012 instead the 2 room solution, also have a big Hard disk than share with other room.
Actually Adelphia charges more for additional boxes and the MoxiMate is not the best alternative to most of consumers hungry of space on their Moxies.
TRADE
I, for one, am VERY eager to get my hands on the BMC9022. According to a CSR at Charter, the BMC9022 will surface in mid-2005 which is consistent with MoxiGuy's info. She said that she has had several requests for it. My suggestion is that if you have any desire to try it out, voice your opinion now with your cable provider.
trade said,I will prefer have two BC9012 instead the 2 room solution, also have a big Hard disk than share with other room. You see, that's the beauty of offering both models: choice. For me, having a second "thin client" is more desirable. Coming from the "networked ReplayTV world", this seems like the next logical step in Moxi's evolution. Of course, it won't have the capability to "offload" the content to a PC, but that's a small price to pay in my opinion. But sometimes, having "separate" boxes may be more appropriate.
Oh, and as a side note, I have to mention that since we had Moxi installed, we haven't used ReplayTV once. It's a bittersweet feeling because I have been such a long-time ReplayTV devotee, but Moxi certainly shines. My wife has taken to it very easily, and has zero complaints. She especially likes the dual-tuner aspect because now she can pretty much watch whatever she wants while something else is recording--something ReplayTV and most TiVo boxes could never manage.
Is there a way to use the second tuner on the BMC9012 for your pip? Or do you still have to split the cable? Some friends on the other side of town have the Scientific Atlanta boxes and the pip is built in that model.
PIP is not currently a Moxi function, but "MoxiGuy" says it is not planned, but could be later release. Your best bet with a moxi box would be to split the cable before it goes into the Moxi box and use the split line as a second input on your PIP-capable TV. Of course you lose all Moxi control and channels > 99 on the second input, but it's a start...
belsokar 11-08-04, 02:17 PM Is it just me, or are there still issues with the 'Record Series' option when you select the option to record only new shows?
My issue is as follows, and I'll just use a real world issue...I just got FoxHD in my area (Thousand Oaks, CA), which I'm very happy about...I proceeded to setting up The Simpsons and Malcolm in the Middle off this channel...I only want new episodes, but the problem is, my moxi box thinks that the 8-10 airings per day of these two shows combined, are all scheduled to record....and since its off the HD channel, it'll take up more space, forcing other shows I haven't watched yet off my hard drive...I spent 30 minutes last night going through the "Scheduled to Record" option and deleted all the repeats, but there has to be a BETTER way! I realize that neither of these shows is in High Def, but even recorded off the digital feed is so much better than watching the analog feed...
I know there have already been improvements in the code that look at descriptions as well...and maybe its a fault of namebased recording when there is no real "NEW EPISODE" tag to go off of from the cable providers...but a few work arounds include allowing scheduled recording (only record Sundays from 8:00-8:30 for example), or perhaps being able to only recognize certain time slots...
again, I don't know that there is an easy solution to this...but right now, certain shows that run heavy in syndication keep getting scheduled and filling up my hard drive,...and when i'm away for a couple days,...it wreaks havoc on my already recorded shows...

ClemGuy 11-08-04, 05:18 PM I've been having problems with my moxi box loosing track of channels. Here in 29630 (zip for Central, SC) land, channel 4 is the nbc affiliate. And for some reason, it's just not accessible anymore. It was there, but now when I touch 4 and wait, it just displays the channel it's on at the bottom and doesn't change. If I go to channel 5 and down channel, it skips over it like I had removed it from the channel settings. But I didn't. It's in the channel settings.
I'm trying to coordinate a visit from the local service, but I suspect they will just want to swap out my box, and there go my recordings...
I've reset the box and it came back once. Then, when it disappeared the next day, I did it again. This time, it's not back. There are a few other channels that it's do it to as well, but 4 is the main one for news, etc. and the only one I'm concerned about at the moment.
MoxiGuy Questions: I also occasionally get the blue screen (if you don't subscribe to this, tuft toutty. If you do, call and bitch.) I'm seriously concerned I'm not getting enough bandwidth.
The setup menu showed some figures for bandwidth. I think it was set to max 384 kb. I know I'm not getting the full 3 meg service I'm supposed to for my cable modem when I test it. Would this limit be what's causing me problems with my moxi as well??
My installers didn't up update the old rg-6 cable coming from the distribution in my basement. When they installed my first digital box, they told me the old rg-6 cable wasn't up to the frequency of the digital signal. The stuff in my bedroom where the moxie is installed is very old and has splices in it.

It's not just you - I'm still getting late-night syndicated airings of CSI. It did improve with the last update - but still isn't perfect.

My cable installer (Adelphia) used what he called a one-way splitter (not sure if that's the right name - I'll check for any identifying marks tonight). Most of the signal is passed directly through to the moxi and just a portion goes to the TV - used the same thing on the cable modem in another room. He laughed at my "digital splitter" from Home Depot and said any Adelphia guy would give you a one-way if you asked (of course, I see you're in MO, so don't know if Charter is as generous).
-Will the signal be degraded by the split?
Yep - I don't think there's any way around that - but again the one-way splitter is supposed to cause less degradation and doesn't seem to cause much visual degradation.
-I'm guessing that the 2nd line will only have 'regular' cable channels and no digital/hd channels. Right?
Yep - unless you were to run it through another digital box or into a compatible Cable Card.

bruce73 11-08-04, 06:12 PM abcward:
I've gone the splitter route as well and, if there is any degradation, I'm not seeing it. I had gotten a splitter from RadioShack, with a direct line to the TV and the other to the moxi. Channels 0-99 are much clearer and colors more saturated on the direct input and I'm seeing no problems with the HD and channels >100 on the other (SD channels are a little less sharp than they used to be with the moto 6200, but I understand that's from the moxi).
In fact, the Adelphia cable guy replaced my $6 RS splitter for free with one he had which seems a more solid construction and, he said, would do a better job.
As stated, you lose the moxi functions with the analog stations this way, but, as I'm pretty much only interested in basketball games and an occasional old b/w movie on AMC, it works for me.

SonomaSearcher 11-08-04, 10:19 PM An entire forum devoted to one brand of HD STB/DVR would be a little too specific at this point. Some day, who knows, but for now this thread is doing quite nicely.
At some point, interested parties may want to start separate threads for different cable companies' implementations of Moxi, such as the Comcast Moxi thread, the Charter Moxi thread, the Adelphia Moxi thread. Yet it seems that there aren't many, if any, issues that are specific to one cable company versus another.
Also, once the 9022 is available, someone may want to start a thread about it.
I agree. I would LOVE a separate forum, but this single thread seems to keep the noise down a bit(except for off-topic posts like this one!) ;) I actually like the idea of keeping it simple. But that shouldn't stop you from posting other threads. One great thing is that this group seems VERY focused--something you don't see too often...
Back on topic: FYI, I'm in Anderson, SC, 29621 and we don't yet have the "Ticker" or "VOD" yet.
Oh, and MoxiGuy: I REALY second the request to be able to OPTIONALLY assign time slots to recordings instead of just every recording (kind of like ReplayTV does.) Although, the "Scheduled To Record" list is SO USEFUL that this may just be unnecessary. They key is to get the interface to "react" as fast as you can. Modifying shows in the "Scheduled to Record" list is tedious...
Also, I would like to see "recording by keyword", kinda like ReplayTV's Keyword Themes. THAT would be very useful!
MoxiGuy 11-09-04, 09:18 AM To whomever controls the name of this thread: Motorola doesn't use any space in the product name. It should be "BMC90xx"
AppState 11-09-04, 10:10 AM I would like the ability to save keyword searches.
Craiger01 11-09-04, 11:22 AM Hi Moxi Guy. I have had the BMC 9012 for awhile. Will they add a web browser to the BMC 9012 and BMC 9022D and let you surf the web using the built in cable modem and then you wouldn't need a PC and just be able to surf the web on the TV? Or could share the web connection with another PC in addition to surfing the web with broadband on your PC? Also when will Charter in St. Louis make the BMC 9022D available and when will VOD be available on the Moxi boxes in St. Louis? Thanks, Craig.
Craiger01 11-09-04, 11:26 AM I hope that wasn't to many questions. I forgot to mention that I like the BMC 9012. They only thing that's bad is some of the analog channels are fuzzy but I heard that's a problem because its converting the HDTV signal to analog. Hopefully this will get fixed when Charter in St. Louis goes all digital sometime next year. Thanks, Craig.
MoxiGuy 11-09-04, 12:40 PM Craiger01,
Browser: it's possible, and gets more interesting at HD resolution. We have a browser running in the lab. Not sure it's the highest priority for most viewers.
Sharing Internet Connetion w/ PC: We're heading that way. No specifics or timing to share yet.
9022 availability: Sometime next year. Will get more specific as that time gets closer
VOD on Moxi in St. Louis: Need to stay vague because there are are a lot of dependencies and I don't want to mislead, but I can say it's one of the highest priority projects for Charter and us.
Analog: The reason is not exactly the way you put it. What's going on is that DVRs have to convert analog signals to digital in order to record them or buffer them for pause & replay. We have to do it in real time and we have to use processors that are affordable for a mass market device. By contrast, other digital sources are either shot digital, or converted with much more expensive processors, or even--in the case of preparing films for DVD--with a lot of hand-tweaking to ensure that encoding is optimized scene by scene. You'll find that analog quality is an issue for all DVRs. Especially noticeable on HD displays--and especially jarring when contrasted with HD picture quality. You're right about the remedy. If cable had only digital channels, the analog problem would disappear--by definition.
Craiger01 11-09-04, 01:00 PM Cool, Thanks for the info Moxi Guy. Will you still be able to rent the BMC 9022D through Charter or will you buy that one? Would the BMC 9022D still be about $10 a month? I think Moxi should use that button thats reserved for future use for the Internet. Push that button and the web browser pops up. Then you could use the search for shows keyboard to enter in the web address and the save it in a favorites category. Or maybe hook up a keyboard to one of the usb ports. Do you use that web browser with the built in cable modem and you the web browser have Java, Shockwave and Flashplayer installed. What type of web browser are you using? Thanks, Craig.
Craiger01 11-09-04, 01:07 PM I fogot to ask, if you got a standalone Tivo analog channels would still be fuzzy? Also why didn't Moxi let you turn off the BMC 9012? Just curious.
Craiger01 11-09-04, 01:16 PM Last question, are you thinking of adding that web browser say sometime next year and would you be able to get it through a software update? I guess Charter would have to decide if they wanted you to use their broadband service on the Moxi box instead of a PC. Thanks Craig.
I would like to clarify my whole "keyword" issue for those who are not familiar with the concept. Currently, Moxi lets us search for shows by entering keywords into a search screen. It displays all "hits" and from that list, we have the ability to schedule any of the shows in the list just like any other show list. I like the implementation, and it works very, very well.
That said, I would like to see the keyword search functionality extended a bit. For example, my ReplayTV DVR has a feature that lets you search for shows based on keywords just like Moxi, but ReplayTV gives you the option of going one step further. It lets you create a "Theme" recording from the results of a keyword search. A Theme is simply a scheduled recording that records all shows that match specific keyword search criteria, but the difference is that it is not locked into the current channel guide data. If there are no matches in the current channel guide data, it doesn't record anything, but over time, as new guide data comes in, if it finds a hit, then it will auto-schedule the recording. Think of it as a kind of "watch list."
Here is a real-world example: My brother-in-law saw a comedy special on HBO with the irreverent comedian "Lewis Black", but he forgot to tell us about it. When he finally did, I went to our ReplayTV box and did a search, but unfortunatly, there were no "hits" in the existing Guide data after doing a keyword search on "Lewis Black." But ReplayTV let me create a "Theme" that will record any matches, so I set up a "Lewis Black" Theme and after several weeks, voila! there was the recording. Apparantly HBO re-aired the show at a later time. In addition, it also recorded a couple Comedy Central shows and even some obscure show on either the WE or Bravo channels--it found his name in the description. So, not only did we get to see the show my brother-in-law recommended, but we got to see Lewis Black in some other comedy bits. The benefit is that the "Theme" "watches" for shows to record even if they do not yet exist in the Guide data. Curerntly with Moxi's implementation, I would have had to do a daily search until I found a hit--tedious at best.
"AppState" mentioned that he would like to be able to save keyword searches. AppState, can you clarify this? Would you still need this if a "theme-like" function was added to Moxi?
MoxiGuy 11-09-04, 01:26 PM DVR needs to be available to record shows whether or not you're watching. It needs to be available for downloading new program guide data whether or not you are watching. So, they never really go off.
Some DVRs give the impression that they are "off" by going into a standby mode which shuts down some functions. There are posts elsewhere on the forum about situations where a DVR that thinks it's supposed to be "off" will wake up to record a scheduled show. The user comes by and turns on the TV, sees the show and thinks that the set top box must be on. (Well it is, but it's planning to go back to sleep as soon as the recording is completed). The user then rewinds the currently recording show to watch it from the beginning. But as soon as the recording is completed, the DVR goes back to sleep, leaving the viewer in the middle of the show very confused about what just happened.
Web browser is not scheduled for any planned update. We're still investigating whether it's an appealing enough idea. There are plenty of enhancements ahead of it in line.
Won't comment on PQ of competitors.
J.R.1234 11-09-04, 01:30 PM I'm new, and the problem I seem to have had is the audio. When I turn to a channel, there is no audio. But, when I turn the channel and then turn it back, it will come in. Last week, the audio went out on the E! channel, and stayed out. This was after it went out and came back in on ESPN last Sunday, and CBS last Monday night. This is the third Moxi box I've had, and have gotten really tired of Chater CS and their techs telling me that after the FIFTH time they came out that it is either my tv, the signal (which they said the boosted), or the box. The sugnal is up enough right now, and I still have a digital box, and the sound does not cut out on that.
They should have never had released this service until it had the bugs worked out. When it works, I think it is awesomw, light years ahead of the digital service. I got used to the menu (my only complaint was the movie listings). Once I got used to finding when the nights movies were coming on, I was fine with it. I have went through so much w/Charter, from nasty CSRs who don't know what they're talking about to field techs who want to pass the buck and are too lazy to do what is necessary to fix the problems. Thank God for MoxiGuy, and all the posting he has done, and thanks to you all. I just thought I was the only one going through this.
If Moxiguy can give a post about the audio, it would be really appreciated. Thanks. J.R.
GlendaleHDTV 11-09-04, 01:44 PM jbarr: You may want to check out this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=4309754#post4309754) where there was some discussion about wishlists (the Tivo equivalent of theme recordings) and Moxi.
When I turn to a channel, there is no audio. But, when I turn the channel and then turn it back, it will come in.
I have this problem on occassion as well. I hit the pause button, and then the pause button again and it always comes right back on.
I fogot to ask, if you got a standalone Tivo analog channels would still be fuzzy?
I had a standalone Tivo before the Moxi and the PQ for analog channels was similar
Craiger01 11-09-04, 02:00 PM Thanks again Moxi Guy for the info. I think that Internet on the Moxi would be cool I hope Moxi does that. Care to talk about those future enhancements or are they top secret? :) Or are they somewhere in this thread. Sorry couldn't resist. :)
Craiger01 11-09-04, 02:03 PM Thanks for that info GlendaleHDTV. Do you think Charter in St. Louis will go all digital at the begining of 2005 or sometime in 2005?

I had the same problem on CBS last night (while skipping through the first set of commercials on Two and a Half Men). Pausing didn't seem to fix it either - nor did resetting the amp (thought it may be a dolby digital problem in the amp). Like you, I had to change the channel and then return to the show.

AppState 11-09-04, 05:45 PM jbarr: I was in fact referring to needing something similar to the TiVo Wishlist feature, which from your description seems to be like Replays Theme feature.
Ok got my BMC9012 last Saturday and I have mixed emotions. The features are great. Easy to use. A Charter employee that moniters a Charter tech website even sent me a upgrade that added the Games and Ticker. Really nice except for the fact my picture quality has suffered greatly from my old Motorola HD box. The Analog channels look horrible. And the HD channels have suffered too. Every time I use to switch to Discovery HD I use to fall into a trance. It looked great. Now I'm like uhhh it looks ok. This is really disappointing.  As much as I like the DVR features I'm not sure I can look at the picture it produces knowing what it use to look like. I have tryed all the different resolutions. Currently at 1080i. What to do?
BTY using component after finding out the DVI was not working yet.

Craiger01 11-09-04, 10:39 PM Does the Moxi box really need VOD? I just rented my first PPV movie - 13 Going On 30. I liked it. I could pause it with the pause live TV when I needed to. Does PPV have all the movies VOD does? How long does it PPV and VOD to get new movies that arrive at Blockbuster and Hollywood Video. I wonder if I ever need to go to the rental store again. Man, I sound like Charter's commerical. :)
